LOCAL FAVOR Our annual ’Best of Healdsburg’ showcase
H
ealdsburg has the peculiar distinction of being a place people travel thousands of miles to visit while some of us simply count ourselves lucky enough to already be here. Somewhere between those two experiences is a town. And a pretty good one, as it happens. Welcome to The Healdsburg Tribune’s annual “Best of Healdsburg” edition, wherein we celebrate the people and places that make living here worth the occasional challenge of explaining to a tourist that, yes, we actually live here. Wine Country comes with a certain amount of mythology, not least of which is the suggestion that everyone spends their afternoons contemplating how light plays upon the hillside while sipping a pricey liquid from a stemmed glass. And though this is true, there’s so much more to the Healdsburg experience—so much, in fact, that it takes the readership of a 161-year-old paper to enumerate it. Naturally,
we do this with an annual readers’ poll, and what follows in these pages are the results. You, our readers, voted for your favorites, bringing the authority of people who have actually eaten the sandwich, gotten the haircut and trusted someone with the dog. Those who live in the ’Burg are on an endless reconnaissance mission, finding the best of the best of what defines the local experience, and generously sharing that intel in these pages. The resulting winners reflect the tastes, loyalties and occasional enthusiasms of a town that pays attention. Behind every listing is someone whose work made enough of an impression that a customer took a moment to say so. For anyone who has ever unlocked a business before sunrise or balanced its books after dark, that matters, and we cheer them on. There’s also the pleasure of recognizing someone you know among the winners. Suddenly, the person who’s been patiently
BRIDGES The Russian River is crossed by two bridges near Memorial Beach, and soon a SMART rail.
answering your questions about pruning or pastries is a local celebrity. You knew them when. You may even have an outstanding invoice from them—please pay it, fame only goes so far. Consider these pages an invitation to revisit an old favorite or introduce yourself to a future one. Buy something. Book something. Finally investigate that place your neighbor keeps recommending with the intensity of someone recruiting for a cult. And tell them they’re doing a good job. Sure we’ve tallied the votes, but they might still appreciate hearing it. —Daedalus Howell, Editor

ENTERTAINMENT again the Best Artist in Healdsburg according to your votes. He’s no stranger to local recognition, though he made his reputation elsewhere. He grew up on Chemise Road, a rural offshoot of West Dry Creek, then went off to college at the prestigious Parsons School of Design. He leveraged that training, and connections, into a successful career in corporate advertising in New York City. Taking time off to explore New Zealand and Europe, he finally bounced back to Healdsburg a few years ago. “I kind of felt like I always knew I was going to come back here at some point,” he said.

MODERN MINSTRELS The upstairs space at Little Saint is now wholly dedicated to live performances from visiting artists, among them Phoebe Bridgers, Rufus Wainwright and Beck. The mural at Russian Riverkeeper adds mural art to his portfolio, with the river spilling out of Pomo baskets and the osprey clutching a seagoing salmon to the coastal surf crashing in the redwoods. The ongoing mural project at Abel de Luna reinforces the hub’s role as the city’s multicultural center, as a woman—is that a goddess?—releases monarch butterflies and poppies into the breeze. His next project is a mural for the Community Pavilion, a cornucopia of local harvests defining the location of the weekly Healdsburg Farmers Market, which runs from April to December. Perhaps this artistic streak runs in the family. Jake Messing’s father, Russ Messing, was named the city’s poet laureate in 2017. It may have been the last of the line: This year’s Arts & Entertainment list does not include a category for Best Poet, or Best Writer—though we have some bylines in mind, if anyone asks. — Christian Kallen

100 years ago, which put hearty European bread on the tables of Healdsburg’s farmers. Modern Healdsburg’s baked goods story began quietly on the east side of the Plaza, with the Downtown Bakery & Creamery. Two graduates of Alice Waters’ kitchen, including Chez Panisse’s pastry chef Lindsey Shere, over time elevated the concept of a community bakery into something much more, “an entire food ecosystem, a rough map for the culinary landscape we now take for granted,” as Liza Gershman wrote in Farm + Market Healdsburg (Best Book if there were such a category). Photo by Christian Kallen
BEST CATERERS It’s difficult to find chef Krisztian Karkus away from the stove, or the grill, or the kitchen. Which means Alena Rebik won’t be far behind, supporting Tisza Bistro’s steady program of restaurant meals, private lunches and catered events, plus a regular food stand at the Healdsburg Farmers Market.
A TABLE FOR EVERY TASTE Where meals are seen as community events
P
erhaps it’s not unexpected that a former agricultural hub—Buckle of the Prune Belt!—built its modern reputation on the fruits of that industry: Food and Drink. There are many categories in this lengthy list of Best of, and to no one’s surprise almost half of them are for wine, from Best Chardonnay to Best Zinfandel, Best Sommelier and Best Winery Dog. (It’s a theme: There are four “best
dog” winners in Food & Drink alone!) Judging by the number of votes received, many locals find wine fascinating in numerous ways. The food side of the equation delivers its own supply of categories, from ingredients (Best Healthy East) to menus (both Best Lunch and Best Brunch, notably). Looked at as a whole, these establishments are motivated by a need for company as much as a need for
sustenance (Best Coffee Hangout, Best Bar or Pub) or for social lubrication (Best Romantic Restaurant or even Best Place to Dine Solo). Restaurants are distinguished by their servers or chefs, and meals seen as community events. The list begins with Best Bakery, which makes sense given the evolution of Healdsburg’s food scene. In Healdsburg it dates back to the founding of Costeaux French Bakery over
Now the Best Bakery winner is of another generation, or the one beyond that. The Quail & Condor tops the list, and Melissa Yanc, Best Pastry Chef. From her first bakery in Denver—at 23!—to starred restaurants in New York and L.A., she finally found her way to Healdsburg and SingleThread then, without missing a step, to Troubadour and The Quail & Condor. Now her croissants and scones, brûlée and biscuits are a crucial part of the Healdsburg breakfast, starting the day for local laborers and visiting tourists alike. Even now though, the sticky buns from the Downtown Bakery and Creamery still rank as Best Locally Made Food Product, and Costeaux French Bakery charts as Best Place to Work. New stories come to town, but as long as the old stories continue to provide, we’ll never go hungry in Healdsburg. — Weeklys Staff

MAKING HEALDSBURG LOOK EVEN BETTER
FUNKY PRETTY Amber Isaacs of Doram Goods checks for peppercorns in the handmade pepper mill at her busy shop at 437 Healdsburg Ave. The business is the winner in the Best Furniture and Decor category in Best of Healdsburg 2026.
A house is an investment, a home is a lifestyle
D
epending on who is counting, there are between 200 and 2,000 practicing realtors in Healdsburg. It’s a volatile business, with sales even of 2-bedroom family homes cresting the million-dollar mark with regularity. There’s more to home ownership than just the investment— there’s also maintenance, and improvement or upgrades. Then, once the basics are taken care of: financing and legal, architecture and construction, structural and HVAC. Add plumbing and all the rest, from basement to roof, and there’s still a lot of room for
personalizing the property. The challenge is turning a house into one’s home, center stage for the family. But what makes a house a home? Not just a piece of paper—there are dozens if not hundreds of houses in Healdsburg which serve as a “second home” to their owners, yet even these are graced by their owners with personal touches. It may be furnishing the place with antiques, building a deck or a garden, or installing solar power; all are improvements that turn a property into a place to live in and enjoy. One more thing, not to be
overlooked: design. Several local establishments are in the business of making things look good. For instance, Allie Janes Design for interiors, and Doram Goods for furniture and other design elements. Their storefronts share a common hall at 437 Healdsburg Ave., so they organically share inspiration as well as customers. They are among the new businesses that help make Healdsburg the sort of town that has its own Design Healdsburg festival, four days in early October. Dawn Zidonis, CEO and co-founder of Design Bay Area, added Healdsburg to the list of cities that have their own “style,”
like Milan or San Francisco. “I mean this in the broadest sense, but design can be a couple of different things,” Zidonis said. “It’s either communicating something, or it’s helping make our lives better. A tool that you can utilize, or an appliance. I mean, if you think about it, everything around you is designed, everything. Even nature has design elements.” So add design to food, wine and hospitality as among Healdsburg’s signature attractions. And keep your eyes open: Good design is everywhere. — Weeklys Staff

THE HOTEL AT THE HEART OF HEALDSBURG 2001 marked the dawn of a New Millennium in Healdsburg
M
uch has changed in the City of Healdsburg since 2001. There are more tourists and more beds for their heads; there are more (and better) restaurants, more places for a craft cocktail, more spas and more venues for those special evenings or events. It’s almost as if Healdsburg has grown into maturity, and some would say it all comes down to the hotel and its ancillary businesses on the 300 block of Healdsburg Avenue. When Merritt Sher and his family visited
town in the 1990s, a vacant lot sat on that block, and calling it a “dog park” was giving it the benefit of the doubt. But the shopping center developer knew an opportunity when he saw one, and by 2001 all the pieces were in place for Hotel Healdsburg to anchor what became the block we know today. The Dry Creek Kitchen, the first West Coast venture by Charlie Palmer, wasn’t far behind. The Cafe Newsstand on the corner of Matheson Street added an urban touch. A flower store bloomed, a ladies fashion shop debuted and the hotel itself added a spa,
massages and eventually improved linen and Europeanclass service. Suddenly, it was the 21st century in Healdsburg. But with success comes evolution, noted daughter and current manager Circe Sher. “Cafe Newsstand went away and Pizzando took its place. The retail changed hands; we opened with a flower store and a fabulous women’s clothing store that changed hands a few times to now feature Christy Lynn.” The current Fan Museum space was once Myra Hoefer’s design shop, and then Wade’s studio. Now it’s the Hand Fan Museum, a passion project of Circe’s mother, Pam Sher. Piazza Hospitality, the entity that originated the hotel, has since
PROGRESS Here the Union Hotel once stood, on what was then called West Street and is now Healdsburg Avenue. Since 2001 the Hotel Healdsburg and a clutch of related businesses have claimed center stage.
opened two additional hotels— H2H and the Harmon House, on the 200 block of Healdsburg Avenue—with a fourth hotel on the drawing board for the 400 block. When considering what “services” a city offers, the range is wide: Best Place to Worship, Best Health Club, Best Family Physician and many others of the practical, day-today mode. Yet consider that many of those “bests” are based on services that would not be possible, or expected, without a world-class hotel like Hotel Healdsburg. That’s why many of the passion projects that characterize Healdsburg find their origin story there. — Christian Kallen

SHOPPING THE HEALDSBURG WAY Inspired by Fiji, at home in Healdsburg
K
im Neal, founder and owner of Sonoma County Trading Company, vowed to keep it simple after three years in Fiji: She saw plastic everywhere, even far from land out into the Pacific. She’s doing her part and encouraging her customers to do theirs, to reduce impact even when they’re looking for gifts and luxury items. It’s the best New Business in town, and a worthy addition to Healdsburg’s shopping options. SoCo Trading Company is a lowwaste refill store, a retail product line that has only developed in the past 10 years. Sonoma County is a hotspot for such shops; there are seven in
Sonoma and only one (!) in San Francisco. “We all have the same goal, basically to try and reduce waste and plastic,” Neal said. One key feature of such a store: a line of large bottles filled with scented, enzyme-based soaps to refill a customer’s own dispenser. “We’re just trying to get people to reduce their waste so you can bring in your bottle and refill it instead of buying a new plastic one each time you run out,” she said. It’s probably not the do-good impulse that brings people in the store, however, but the smell. “Oh, it smells so good in here,” Neal says. “That’s one of the things that people say when they first walk in.” It’s the soaps
and the candles, of course, but all the scents come from essential oils, not chemicals. “So the smell’s not overpowering,” Neal says, but it’s certainly attractive if not seductive. A look at the product lines finds Lavender, Rosemary, Sandalwood, Cedarwood, Lemongrass, Bergamot, White Tea Pomegranate Toner, Rosewater and Witchhazel—not all in one lotion or soap, but outside of Dragonfly Floral it’s the best flower garden in town. Sonoma County Trading Company won in the Best New Business category, but in fact it’s the fourth iteration of SoCo Trading, which started in a co-op storefront in Windsor, then
’REFILL NOT LANDFILL’ Kim Neal proudly takes seriously the motto of her low-waste refill store SoCo Trading Company, our Best New Business choice.
progressed to a Cloverdale store on First Street in 2022. The Healdsburg store, smaller in size but outpacing Cloverdale in refill statistics, opened in mid2024. “I guess more people found out about it this past year,” said Neal. Which is by no means to sell short the other, more established shops in town, that purvey everything from auto parks to tires, jewelry to pets, men’s clothing to women’s. Over the past five years Healdsburg has firmly evolved from a winecentric village to a shopper’s destination. Why? For the usual reason: There’s something for everyone in Healdsburg. — Weeklys Staff
