WEATHERING THE STORM Most restaurants throughout South Valley and

San Benito County are open for take-out or delivery.

T

he closure of dine-in restaurants during the shelter-in-place order in Santa Clara and San Benito counties has hurt those local establishments that rely heavily on foot traffic to stay in business.

Many restaurants, cafes, coffee shops and others are now counting on the public to support them through take-out or delivery orders.

The following is a list of South Valley and San Benito County establishments that offer take-out or delivery options.

This list was compiled by information from the Gilroy Downtown Business Association, the “Gilroy Take-Out and Delivery Options Amid COVID-19” Facebook page, Morgan Hill Restaurants Open for Take-Out Orders website and the San Benito County Chamber of Commerce.

influx of unemployment claims.

How to file for unemployment Claims skyrocket in California

Requirements to file a claim When filing for UI benefits, you must have earned enough wages during the base period to establish a claim, which is at least $1,300 over the last four calendar quarters.

You must also be: • Totally or partially unemployed.

• Unemployed through no fault of your own.

• Physically able to work.

• Available for work.

• Ready and willing to accept work immediately.

• Actively looking for work.

Needed information The online unemployment filing system can be found at edd.ca.gov/ Unemployment/UI_Online.htm.

After registering for an account with an email, name and other information, the EDD will ask for the following information to file a claim: • Last employer information including company name, supervisor’s name, address (mailing and physical location) and phone number • Last date worked and the reason you are no longer working • Gross earnings in the last week you worked, beginning with Sunday and ending with your last day of work • Information on all employers you worked for during the past 18 months, including name, address (mailing and physical

How long will it take for my claim to make it through the process?

When an unemployed worker files a claim, the process typically takes about three weeks from filing to the EDD making benefit payments to eligible workers. he demand for Unemployment Insurance (UI) benefits has skyrocketed as COVID-19 tightens its grip on the nation.

In California, the Employment Development Department processed 186,809 UI claims for the week ending March 21, about a 363 percent increase over the previous year.

During the prior week, the EDD processed 57,606 UI claims.

Stats on claims filed in Santa Clara and San Benito counties for March is unavailable, as the EDD said such data is typically a month behind.

COVID-19 has forced many Californians to learn how the unemployment process works. Here is some information for those affected provided by the EDD, whether they have lost their entire job or have experienced reduced hours.
