S

omewhere down the line, anyone who aspires to have a creative life faces a “go for it” moment.

Like a kid on a high-dive platform looking down at the pool below, there comes a point in every would-be artist’s life when the dreaming, planning and brooding about doing something bold has to give way to actually doing something bold.

Ignacio “Nacho” Moya’s highdive moment came in 2016. At the time, he was just reaching his mid 30s, engaged in a line of work that had provided for him and his family for 15 years. But it was pretty far afield from what he yearned to do.

For about as long as he could remember, Moya wanted to be a

visual artist. He had both the talent and the passion for drawing and painting. But the rip currents of life carried him in a different direction.

In 2016, he decided it was time for a reset.

One day, he went in to his retail management job at the Gilroy Premium Outlets, and he quit. “I just thought, ‘If I stay here today, I’m

Fast-forward to the late winter of 2019, and Nacho Moya sits in his spacious art studio on Eigleberry Street in downtown Gilroy. It’s a day off for him, having hosted eight separate art events in the course of the previous week.

The walls of his studio serve as the best advertisement for his versatility as an artist. There are commissioned

works, personal pieces and paintings of famous icons from Bob Marley to Steph Curry. The styles and approaches are just as diverse as the subject matter. But most of the images are dominated by bold, lapel-grabbing colors. Images of Marilyn Monroe and Frida Kahlo appear several times along the wall. On one easel is a painting that Moya has just started.

All that’s on it now, in big graffiti-esque lettering, is a Tom Petty song title: “I Won’t Back Down.”

“I like to do bright colors,” he said. “I like colors that are going to give you energy, and I feel when you walk in here, you feel the energy.”

going to end up here for another five years,” he remembered.

It was an enormous risk. He, his wife and two children had just found a nice apartment in Morgan Hill, and leaving his steady job could jeopardize their situation.

Still, he kept telling his friends, family and, most of all, himself, “I believe I can do great things.”

THE ART LIFE Moya’s work touches on everything from social justice issues and pop art to superhero parodies like El Chapulín Colorado.

come true for Moya. He makes his living largely through group events that exist somewhere between formal art lessons and birthday or bachelorette parties at which someone decides to break out the paints. These “painting parties,” during which Moya guides clients in creating their own original artwork, follow a number of themes: “Paint Your Pet,” “Art on Denim,” “Black Light Paint Party,” “Paint Your Favorite Frida.”

“The minimum I do is 10 people,” he said of his paint parties. He markets mainly through social media and his efforts at branding, plus word of mouth, have brought people to his studio from Fresno, Sacramento and even Southern California. He augments his income with commissions from private clients, and also works with local businesses and non-profits. Most recently, Moya designed and created the new poster for the 2019 Poppy Jasper International Film Festival.

“He’s got such talent and energy,” said the film festival’s director L. Mattock “Mattie” Scariot. Moya developed a relationship with the film festival when Scariot asked him to paint something as a gift to visiting film-industry professionals Randy Spendlove and Kevin Rubio

(both of whom grew up in the Gilroy/Morgan Hill area). Moya agreed to do a live painting event for Spendlove and his family.

Scariot remembers that Moya painted a portrait of three generations of Spendlove’s family sideways in black and white. “He was painting a horizontal picture (vertically),” she said, “and when he (finished it) and turned it so everyone could see, the family was almost in tears.”

Moya was born and raised in the Mexican state of Guanajuato.

When he was about 10 years old, he won a drawing contest and received as a prize schoolbooks and art supplies, delivered in a new backpack.

“The backpack was what made me so happy,” he said, adding that where he grew up, “if you had a backpack, you had money. Well, we didn’t have the money to buy a backpack. I used to carry my stuff in a little bag.”

The contest win sparked an ambition. “That’s when I figured out that I could do things with art.”

Moya came to the U.S. when he was still a teenager about 20 years ago. He has spent almost all of that time in the Gilroy/Morgan Hill area. His art has allowed him to explore the contours of his identity as a Mexican-American. ➝ 15

Limelight Theater explores family bonds in ‘The Velocity of Autumn’

B

y turns comic, poignant and sad, Eric Coble’s The Velocity of Autumn at Limelight Actors Theater is a thought-provoking exploration of family bonds and the perils of aging.

Alexandra is a vibrant, 80-yearold artist living in the family brownstone in Brooklyn one fall. Her children, concerned about her failing memory and fading physical strength, want to move her to a safer situation. She’s having none of it and has gone so far as to surround herself with Molotov cocktails and barricade the front door with crimescene tape and a pile of furniture.

But youngest son Chris, long estranged from the family, climbs up a tree and into her second-story living room to initiate a long negotiation with his mother in which revelations are shared on both sides.

Alexandra considers herself a “cornered animal” and threatens to take dramatic action if her kids try to intervene. She’s suspicious of Chris’s motives, since he’s chosen to stay away for two decades, even skipping his father’s funeral. But it’s clear that he is the most like his mother, and maybe even her favorite, despite her description of him as the “cockamamie” one of the children and her revelation that he

was the slowest of her offspring to toilet-train.

Rosalind Farotte makes the most of Alexandra’s frustration and sorrow at the insults of her aging body, thumping about the stage with a cane and railing against the physical limitations of eight decades on the planet. “Another part peels off, another body part falls to the floor,” she laments. Her frustration is real as she gropes for words she can no longer pull up from her memory, or loses her train of thought in mid-sentence.

As Chris, Kevin Heath, who co-directed the play with JoAnna Evans, has an easy camaraderie with Farotte that somewhat belies Chris’s long absence from his mother’s life. He’s terrifically convincing as the play goes along and layers of guilt, resentment and misunderstanding are peeled away.

It turns out that mother and son are on parallel journeys into the unknown, and eventually are able to reach a solution that will enhance their remaining time together.

The play effectively captures the changing dynamics of a family whose matriarch is making the long, slow journey to the end of her life.

Absent family members step up reinsert themselves into an established order with unpredictable results.

It doesn’t make Alexandra’s aging any less onerous to her, but she regains a relationship with Chris that she had missed. And still she rages against the dying of the light.

The theater’s simple set design for Alexandra’s living room is perhaps not as evocative of an artist’s life as it might be. She has stripped all her paintings from the walls, but her furnishings seem more like those of an old lady than a creative mind.

With the ferocious optimism of someone who feels he’s getting a late start, Moya admits that he has big dreams. “One day, I’d love to hire other artists to do the paint parties and teach classes, so I can focus on what I want to do in my work. I’d like my work to be in Los Angeles, in San Francisco, all around the world. That’s my goal.”

Now, though, he has to concentrate on marketing and branding as much as art. He feels that he’s building a reputation as a distinctive artist, planting seeds in the community and the region. But he’s not willing to stop there.

“What I would like to see is a billboard in Hollywood that says ‘Nacho Moya Art Exhibition,’” he said, “I gotta think big and dream big. I know bigger things are coming. I have to keep going. If I ever stop, it’s just going to take longer to get there.”

“There is a stereotype that because I’m Latino, I’m going to be drawing la Virgen de Guadalupe or Dia de los Muertos. Yes, I’m going to paint from my culture. But I’m more than that. I have a lot of work that has nothing to do with my culture.”

If you look carefully at the gallery walls at the Moya Studio, among the Fridas and Marilyns, you’ll find a handful of paintings that show Moya’s true passions, the themes that he explores for his own artistic purposes. They touch on everything from social justice issues—one features a series of arms reaching through what appears to be some kind of border wall—to metaphorical dreamscapes. One prominent painting features a family superimposed onto a tree dividing night and day.

Tips to keep mom and dad in a good groove

ere at Live Oak Adult Day Services, caregivers often ask staff for ideas about activities to do with their elders when our center is closed on weekends. Especially if the seniors have dementia or physical limitations, it can be a struggle to keep them occupied. I think that some of our suggestions may be of help to other families in the same situation.

Looking through photo albums is a wonderful activity for the

senior and caregiver, or just the senior. If there are no photo albums in the house, gather old photos and ask Mom or Dad to put them in albums. Can they identify the people in the photos? For another walk down memory lane, you might use a device that has headphones (more comfortable for seniors than earbuds) and download a good number of songs from their high school years. Those are the songs that stick in one’s memory the longest.

If you have an old cassette recorder

around, ask them to tell some of the family stories. You may have heard them many times, but they will enjoy the process of recording and playing them back.

If the senior is able to ambulate a short distance or use a wheelchair, go to the mall and get a free makeover, or visit a salon and get an inexpensive manicure.

Touch is soothing, and the outing can tire the senior just enough to ensure a good night’s sleep. Taking a Sunday drive was once a regular family activity, so try a drive to a park or lake and just enjoy the sights. Check out the Gilroy Demonstration Garden or take a garden tour.

Show some YouTube videos of babies and kids doing silly things, and cute baby animals. Also find old shows your relative might remember, like Milton Berle, Jack Benny, or Ed Sullivan. TV shows with complicated plots might not hold their attention anymore, but old movie musicals can do the trick, such as The Wizard of Oz or Oklahoma. Before they sit down to watch, make a pan of brownies together with a simple box mix; they even come in sugar-free versions now.

If the senior is especially anxious or wanders, try gathering all your old clothes and towels and ask them to fold them. Folding clothes is a familiar task. When they finish, “put them away” and bring them right back, unfolded, as a “new” load that needs attention. Also try pulling out your junk drawer and ask them to organize it by putting all the rubber bands in a bag, sorting buttons, checking if the pens still have ink. If they like the activity, undo their work and ask them to do it again a week later.

Hopefully these ideas will be of help to caregivers and seniors alike.

3. On ride day, arrive early at the venue to allow time for parking, check-in, etc. Many events offer breakfast items; check online.

4. Have a wonderful ride! Event organizers will feature rest stops along the way, where you can refuel and refill. Reputable rides

5. After returning, enjoy the post-ride meal and reflect on your praiseworthy accomplishment.
