he new year got off to a golden start for Solis Winery in Gilroy, as they came home from the 2019 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition with two gold medals and four silvers for their wines. This continues what has been an impressive streak of award-winning vintages for the winery, which became part of the Vanni family in 1989.

These results are no fluke. Solis Winery has entered the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition for a number of years, consistently faring quite well. As the largest competition of American wines in the world, this year’s Chronicle competition attracted over 6,800 wines, and 64 wine judges.

In the 2019 SF Chronicle Competition, Solis was awarded gold medals for their 2014 Reserve Estate Baciami and 2016 Estate Grenache, and silver medals for their 2014 Reserve Estate Cara Mia, 2014 Estate Seducente, 2014 Estate Syrah, and 2015 Estate Zinfandel. All the wines are grown and produced in the Santa Clara Valley, one of the oldest commercial wine regions in the state of California.

Vic Vanni, co-owner of Solis Winery, who handles business and

marketing says receiving this number of awards in America’s biggest wine competition is truly an honor.

“Quality always comes first at our family-owned business, and we take great pride in producing some of our region’s most outstanding wines and unique varietals,” says Vanni. “We encourage people to come visit our tasting room and try our award-winning wines for themselves!”

Vanni says that he and his brother, Mike, the Solis winemaker, assumed the mantle of leadership from their father in 2007.

Since 2000, though, Mike has handled all the vineyard operations and wine making.

Both brothers have been working tirelessly to raise the quality and the visibility of their wines, their winery and of the region overall. Naturally, Vic wasn’t surprised by the ➝ 4

results, as they come on the heels of previous acclaim.

In 2017, at the San Francisco Chronicle Competition, the winery scored a Double Gold for the 2013 Cara Mia, a Gold for the 2013 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, and Silver for the 2013 Estate Zinfandel. In 2016, the winery garnered Gold for the 2012 Baciami Reserve, Gold for the 2012 Estate Syrah and Silvers for the 2012 Seducente and 2012 Estate Zinfandel.

There’s definitely a consistent pattern here. They enter half a dozen competitions each year, performing very well in each overall.

In fact, at the 2015 California State Fair, their 2011 Solis Estate Merlot was awarded a Double Gold and Best Merlot in California, their highest winemaking honor to date.

Asked how their focus on varietals and winemaking style has changed over the years, Vanni replies, “We used to make a second tier of wines, but when my brother and I took over, we stuck with only the premium level. We haven’t changed much from a varietal standpoint, but added the Baciami blend in 2010 to incorporate a heavier wine in our offering and to utilize our estate petite sirah.”

Vanni feels their blends have always been well received and are a testament to their winemaker and his style.

“The Cara Mia is our Bordeaux blend and means ‘My Dear’ in Italian, but was really named after my dad’s favorite red rose,” says Vanni. “Our family had been in the cut flower business for almost 60 years.”

They began making Baciami in 2010, while the Cara Mia dates back to the mid 1990s.

The Grenache, though, is quite new to the Solis lineup.

“In 2014 we planted a new vineyard and decided to try some grenache—2016 was our first vintage and it is very nice,” Vanni says.

“Not sure how soon it will be until we release it though, as it is a very small production.”

We had to ask if these wines are some of the best they’ve made to date, to which the ever humble Vanni replies, “I think we continue to learn how to improve quality, but there are always the uncontrollable factors in this business that can affect quality, so it is hard to say if these are the best we’ve done.

I think it is up to the customer to ➝6 make that decision.”

BIG FINISH The Vannis moved to a small vineyard in 1980 before expanding to Rancho de Solis Winery and Due Ponti Ranch.

Come visit, taste the wines and decide for yourself. While you’re here, admire the sparkling house immediately visible as you come down the driveway. Its distinctive crushed abalone shell exterior made it shiny and unique, as there were only two such houses in Santa Clara County. It was built in 1922 by the original proprietor of the estate, Alfonse Bertero, who also planted the first vineyard there, establishing what became Bertero winery. It remained in business even during Prohibition, when Alfonse became a bootlegger to survive. The winery operated until about 1980, when it was sold to a group of investors who changed the name to Summerhill Vineyards.

Vic and Mike’s parents, Dave and Valerie Vanni, originally came to Santa Clara Valley in 1980, moving their three sons from Los Altos to a small 5-acre vineyard next door to the old Bertero Winery. The Vanni family was in the cut flower business in Watsonville, and Dave was taking over the operation. Although he had no experience in vineyard management or winemaking, Vanni

had a green thumb and was soon on his way to turning a hobby into a new obsession.

Over the next five years, Dave and his family replanted the old vineyard with chardonnay and merlot, supported by a new trellis system and irrigation. Vanni then acquired the adjacent property, again replanting the vineyard.

Finally, in 1989, Vanni purchased the defunct Summerhill Vineyard and renamed it Rancho de Solis Winery, after the Mexican land grant dating back to 1830.

Today, the Vanni family holdings include the 16-acre estate vineyard at Solis, which was planted to red grapes in the early to mid1980, along with a newly acquired 20 acres of land known as the Due Ponti Ranch, just west of Gilroy Gardens. They’ve been busily planting vines, positioning Solis to thrive well into what looks like a golden future.

Early morning in Coyote Creek

I

recently moved to a place at the very northeast corner of Morgan Hill. Outside my front door is a vineyard. When I pass through the gate at the far end of the vineyard, I am standing on Coyote Parkway, the paved path that follows Coyote Creek to San Jose. I have walked and biked this path and the land around it many times, but having it at my doorstep, available at my whim, has awakened me to charms there I never would have imagined.

My first clue came early one morning. I woke to the sound of a robust chorus of coyote calls. I raced to my front door, looked out on the landscape, and listened.

There were three, maybe four of them. They were so close. They had to be just beyond the vineyard, in the field between the Anderson Lake Visitor Center and the bridge across Coyote Creek.

I know from the research that Tanya Diamond and Ahiga Snyder

have done at Pathways for Wildlife that Coyote Valley hums with wildlife. Many coyotes and bobcats call the valley home, and for the occasional mountain lion, it is a pathway between the Diablo Range and the Santa Cruz Mountains.

The experts say they are there.

I have heard them. Now, I want to see them.

I rise early, and I know that is when critters are active. So I have begun a regimen of early morning runs. Before sunrise, but when dawn is warming the eastern sky, I strap on my shoes, grab the gate key and head out.

The magic of predawn mornings in the fields between Coyote Ridge and Coyote Creek almost made me forget why I came. Few things equal the beauty of daybreak. My first morning out, a thin cotton candy layer of tule fog lay low and soft over the open field without hiding the color of warmly lit clouds above. No wildlife that morning, but what a show.

Since that first morning, I have seen wildlife as frequently as Steph Curry hits threes. I am surprised when I don't see at least one coyote.

I regularly see two or three pass by, more prancing than walking; wary, but indifferent to my presence.

The greatest show came last week.

I had turned toward home. Just ahead, but out of sight, several coyotes began to whoop and wail. The sound was so close. I emerged from the shaded creekside into the open field just north of the footbridge.

One coyote scampered across my path and disappeared in the brush, but two others remained. For the next 10 minutes I watched and listened as they held forth, snouts turned toward the heavens, singing with an impressive primal canine enthusiasm.

I have been doing this for only a short time. I have seen too many coyotes to count and several bobcats. So far, no mountain lions, but I have my fingers crossed.

Limelight Actors Theater brings Broadway show

evin Heath, co-founder of Limelight Actors Theater, will join forces onstage with frequent Limelight star Rosalind Farotte for Eric Coble’s comedy, The Velocity of Autumn, which opens Feb. 22 at the Gilroy Center for the Arts.

The show, which played on Broadway in 2014 with Estelle Parsons in the starring role, opens with an alarming scene: An elderly woman is surrounded by dozens of Molotov cocktails in her brownstone, where she has dug in her

heels regarding her children’s plans to move her to a retirement home.

Soon, Alexandra’s long-estranged son Christopher climbs in through the window in an attempt to talk sense into her before she does the unthinkable.

It’s a script that Heath was initially attracted to because of its lyrical title. But when he began to read it, he picked up the phone immediately and invited Farotte to play the role of Alexandra.

“I said, ‘I have a play for you,’” said Heath, who will direct himself and Farotte with some help from

JoAnna Evans. “‘Read this and get back to me with what you think.’”

Farotte was quick in her acceptance.

“I read it and I said I want to do this. She is a wonderful role; it is a beautiful script,” said Farotte. “I love the changes she goes through. I like something that has some depth to the story and depth to the character.”

Heath, who played opposite Farotte in “The Outgoing Tide” in the 2017 season, said, “I really like shows that have women of a certain age and women with a strong character.”

“The Velocity of Autumn” has “a similar theme in some ways, completely different in others,” he said.

“Once I got through the script, I realized that when Chris comes in, his character is pretty messed up. By all means, he is not qualified to save the day. He cannot save himself.”

Heath’s first impression of Alexandra was, “Wow, she’s a horrible mother. But she’s not at all a horrible mother. Emotionally, there’s a lot of good stuff to play there.”

While Farotte is more than a decade shy of Alexandra’s age, she’s experienced the age-related losses in her mother and mother-in-law’s lives.

Alexandra starts off as very strong, opinionated woman and by the end laments that she has lost herself.

“She could not accept that things are changing and life’s not going to be the same,” said Farotte.

Farotte has been a regular on the Limelight stage from its very first show, “The Outrageous Adventures of Sheldon and Mrs. Levine” in 2011. She enjoys working with Heath because he’s both relaxed and exacting.

“I feel very comfortable with Kevin,” she said. “I have worked with him enough that if one of us gets in trouble, the other will take care of it.”

“David Adammo has been incredibly kind and is excited about us using his premises as a stage and to incorporate San Benito Stage Company,” adds Proctor. “It’s good for his business and its good for our business.”

Shows run Fridays through Sundays; evening shows begin at 8pm and matinee shows begin at 2pm.

Pre-purchased tickets are available at sanbenitostage.org for $20; tickets at the door are $25. Dinner and drinks can be purchased separately. The show is recommended for mature audiences.

udiences are going to the dogs with San Benito Stage Company’s latest production about a man and his best (canine) friend.

A.R. Gurney’s stage play, Sylvia, explores the love-triangle that can occur among empty-nesters and a newly adopted dog. Middle-aged Greg finds beautiful lab/ poodle mix, Sylvia, astray in Central Park—and it’s love at first sight.

But his wife, Kate, is less than thrilled with him bringing the stray home; even more so after the clever and coquettish canine takes Greg’s attention away from his marriage.

Directed by Duane Holt, and co-produced by Suzanne Proctor and Anne Hall, the show features local actors Jason Harris, Robin Harris, Maremma Torrenueva, and Matt Morrison.

“The actors are very enthusiastic about their roles,” says Proctor, who says the cast has been in rehearsal since December.
