s there a more fundamentally American ritual than the barn-raising?

People banding together to help a neighbor in need is part of the American story that we never get tired of hearing.

But in contemporary times, there aren’t a lot of barns to be built or neighbors who heed the call to pitch in.

But there is Rebuilding Together, a national organization with a particularly active local chapter that operates from the same impulse.

Twice a year—once in the spring and again in the fall—Rebuilding Together Silicon Valley fans out across Santa Clara County with a battalion of volunteers, not to build barns but to do crucial home repairs for local neighbors in need.

The organization is active year-round in providing free home repair for its clients, but its two Rebuilding Days every year are showcase events when volunteers

in tool belts and local businesses with community spirit come together for an allday repair-apalooza, servicing anywhere from 30 to 40 homes in a single day.

Rebuilding Together aims its resources at people in need, mostly low-income homeowners. According to Bev Jackson, the local chapter’s executive director, about 90 percent of the people they serve are elderly or disabled, many of those living alone. All together, Jackson said, the company helps with repairs to about 360 homes every year in the South Bay, including Morgan Hill and Gilroy. The organization only serves owner-occupied homes—no rental units—and it has a residency requirement for people to live in their newly repaired homes for at least a year after the work is done, to discourage house flippers from exploiting the program. Still, the demand for the free home repairs is intense.

“It really depends on how many people are in the queue and how fast we can get to people,” said Jackson. “We really want to focus on health and safety repairs. So it’s ➝ 6

not really a case of ‘Oh, I don’t like my brown carpet anymore. I want a new carpet.’ But instead we think, ‘Is it a tripping hazard? Is there an active leak in the roof?’—repairs to stairs or other aging-in-place things we can do to adapt the environment to someone who is aging.”

One such client is Leonarda Guzman, an 84-year-old mother of six daughters and a son, who has lived in her in northern Gilroy home for close to 50 years. She was widowed three years ago, and had trouble maintaining thehome that she and her husband had managed for decades together.

Last spring, a team of volunteers descended on the Guzman home and installed handrails and lighting inside and outside the house, replaced the stove, installed new plumbing fixtures and painted the exterior. The grateful homeowner, with the help of two daughters, hosted the entire team for a meal of chile colorado and handmade tortillas. The whole endeavor was underwritten and sponsored by the Morgan Hill-based architectural company Mission Bell.

“There are not enough words to say thank you,” said Guzman, struggling with her composure in her shady front yard.

“We had trouble getting her to accept, because she’s a very proud lady,” said Art Soza, the organization’s construction manager for South County.

“She wanted us to leave money on the table to help other people.”

Soza’s job is to case out applicants’ homes to assess their needs. “We’re looking for a lot of things,” he said.

“Safety issues are primary, access in and out. We look at functionality, windows, doors, water heaters, furnaces. We’ll do minor plumbing ourselves, but for big jobs, we have a number of subcontractors.”

In addition to homes, Rebuilding Together will also do repairs and maintenance work for some nonprofits to enable these organizations to spend their funds on things other than facilities.

Executive director Jackson said it’s not a hard sell to recruit volunteers to help those in that kind of situation. “A lot of people have aging parents or in-laws in other parts of the country and realize that if they don’t have support, there really is no other place for people to go. They want to keep up that house that they’ve lived in for years, but they don’t have the resources. On average, most of our homeowners have been in their homes for more than 25 years.”

One such volunteer who is eager to pitch in is Gilroy’s Loren Cantrell, who is spending his retirement working as a sexton for his church and a docent for Gilroy Gardens. “I sometimes threaten my wife that I’m going back to work so I can relax,” he joked.

Cantrell first got involved with Rebuilding Together Silicon Valley almost 20 years ago, when the aerospace company where he worked helped sponsor the program. ➝ 15

he costumes alone are a challenge—think of all those Edwardian hats for the Ascot horse race, and evening gowns for Eliza Doolittle’s debut—and then there are the voices required to effectively sing the show, from Henry Higgins’s “I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face” to Eliza’s “I Could Have Danced All Night” and her father’s “Get Me to the Church on Time” to Freddy’s “On the Street Where You Live.”

“It’s a beast of a show,” acknowledges Derek Barnes, director of San Benito Stage Company’s summer musical at the Granada Theatre in Hollister. “The scope of it,

the magnitude, for some community theaters, is probably challenging.”

The 1956 Tony Award-winning musical, with book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe, tells the story of a phonetics professor who takes on the project of passing off a Cockney flower girl as a lady.

The show opens July 13 and stars Robert Christopher as Henry Higgins, Isabelle Menez as Eliza, Johnny Moreno as Freddy and Ron Firstbrook as Alfred P. Doolittle.

Christopher has extensive community theater experience in the South County, including George Banks in “Mary Poppins” a couple of years ago.

“This was one of his bucket list

roles,” said Barnes. “He’s really kind of immersed himself into the character, trying to portray him as accurately as possible.”

Menez, a Monte Vista Christian School graduate with musical and voice training, “sounds wonderful in all of the songs,” said Barnes. “She’s really taken on that role with great ease. She can switch from the Cockney to the very prim and proper Eliza very quickly. Her singing voice is just what we needed for that role.”

Barnes recently saw an exhibit of the Ascot costumes on display at the Warner Bros. studio.

“I was just marveling at how impressive they looked,” he said. He’s counting on costume designers Lois Kincaid and Toni Smith to tap into the theater company’s extensive collection of costumes to fill the stage appropriately, not to mention building some show-stopping millinery.

Kayla Murphy is vocal director and Stephanie Hicks is choreographer for the show.

“We wanted to figure out a way to hook the audience into a storyline that has a variety of different story arcs” and emotions, said Barnes, from “happiness to sadness to anger.”

He recognizes the show has “some chauvinistic tones to it; a 1913 play about an egotistical male who thinks he can turn a woman into a proper lady.”

The show will San Benito’s last major production at the Granada Theatre, where its long-term lease is up as the owner takes on some remodeling.

“We’re in a decent situation here,” Barnes said. “We’ve been very comfortable at the Granada. Now we’re going to be out of our comfort zone.”

Next year’s productions will be at several community sites. “We’re going to be a mobile theater,” said Barnes. “That’s how San Benito Stage Co. originally operated.”

Sarah’s Vineyard celebrates 40 years

im Slater has been making wine at Sarah’s Vineyard for long enough now, he feels he’s figured it out.

An engineer by trade and an artist at heart, he’s a rocket-science level brain, with the capacity to simultaneously carry on multiple conversations on various topics, which serves him well at harvest time.

When Slater bought the place on Hecker Pass in 2001, there were seven acres of chardonnay, made in an elegant, rich style. Ronald Reagan liked it enough to serve at a White House dinner in 1982.

Slater, though, had a thing for pinot noir, sourcing it from some great vineyards while his estate vineyard came online. Then, in 2004, he heeded the call of the Rhone, planting counoise,

grenache, mourvèdre, viognier, roussanne, grenache blanc and picpoul blanc, which he says totally takes over his white blend, Jours de Joie. “A little goes a very long way!”

Recently, he planted some charbono. He jokes he’d like to make fun new wines under an entirely different label. “I’m tired of people asking me, ‘Who is Sarah?!’”

That, actually, would be Marilyn “Sarah” Otterman, who found the brand 40 years ago now. She’d be amazed to see Slater’s plans for his new tasting room, a modified Norman castle.

Even after he left that job, he continued to be part of the organization’s twice-yearly Rebuilding Days.

With some experience in carpentry and plumbing, Cantrell has volunteered his time and talent replacing water heaters, installing toilets, building stairs, painting and doing electrical work.

“Sometimes we’ll go in to replace a garbage disposal,” he said, “and then it’s ‘Oh, hey, I got this new faucet that was extra, I might as well put that in, too.’ Then, we’ll see that the flooring is terrible, so we’ll put down a new subfloor or slap some paint on the wall.

They’ll just stand there with their mouths hanging open, just watching these people swarm all over their house, on the inside and out.”

Rebuilding Together has been active in Silicon Valley for years, but the organization has only recently made big moves to be active in the South Valley area. The next Rebuilding Day will take place on Oct. 27, and by then the organization hopes to sign up several new South Valley-based businesses, churches or other organizations as sponsors.

At her home, Leonarda Guzman hosts a church group every month.

ver since last fall's devastating wildfires in the wine country and beyond, the region’s tourism professionals have been reminding us why we love the area and enticing us to return. This past spring, I attended the Outdoor Writers Association of California's conference in Santa Rosa hosted by Sonoma County Tourism.

Choosing from the array of activities offered to us was a frustrating proposition. How do you select two from a list that includes balloon rides, deep sea fishing, kayaking the Russian River, a winery

tour, a visit to Safari West, golf, and on and on?

I finally decided to put my day in the hands of a guide from Getaway Adventures, a company that can customize a tour by mixing and matching several modes of travel to a variety of destinations. Take a hike; visit wineries or breweries on a regular bike or an electric bike; kayak the Russian River or paddle among the harbor seals on the ocean near Jenner. While they will configure a day of adventures to meet your preference, our schedule was set: a morning hike at Armstrong Woods State Park and an

afternoon kayak cruise down the Russian River.

The valley cut by Fife Creek and its tributaries in Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Preserve outside Guerneville is one of the few creases in northern California’s coast range where old growth redwoods continue to thrive. As you walk among these ancient giants, the soft duff underfoot and the dense forest canopy absorb every sound leaving only utter silence. This peaceful setting among immense trees melts cares away and dissolves any illusions of self-importance.

Our guide led us out of the valley and up the East Ridge Trail to a drier and brighter forest of madrone and tanoaks, many of which had succumbed to sudden oak death. Star lilies, Douglas irises, and redwood sorrel persisted into late spring to brighten our way. The trail rolled along the ridgetop before we returned to Fife Creek curling through those ancient redwoods, a great 3-mile loop.

River trips often bring to mind roiling water igniting passengers’ high-pitched squeals. Not on the Russian River in spring. No rapids, just the occasional riffle. Hunting osprey and wary great blue herons showed the way as we slid slowly toward Jenner and the Pacific Ocean. Piloting the kayak required only the lightest attention, an oar stroke now and then to stay on course. Pure peace.

That evening, as the low evening light warmed the vineyards at Jack London State Park, I sat with other conference attendees under a sprawling valley oak while the folks from Stellar Catering brought us local wines and an amazing meal. Everyone I spoke to buzzed at the recounting of their day. Whether deep sea fishing, a hot air balloon ride, visiting Safari West or just drifting down the Russian River, everyone had a great time. The folks in Sonoma County are great hosts, and they are waiting to show you a good time.
