etirement brings to mind relaxation and time to live the good life. For longtime Morgan Hill resident Sandra McNeal, retirement provided her with a gift. The gift of time. McNeal uses that gift to give back to the community she loves—in particular, helping local teens prepare for the next chapter in their lives.

After 33 years in the corporate world of human resources, including 16 years with IBM and 17 with Abbot Laboratories, McNeal retired in 2014. Although she said good-bye to the corporate side of HR, she still owns and operates her own company, Ivey
League Consulting, which specializes in strategic planning, problem solving, business transformation and heightening individual self-awareness. “When I retired I wanted to get involved with the community. The Chamber of Commerce was the first organization I joined,” McNeal says. McNeal found a perfect fit for her skills in the Chamber’s Education Committee program, Rock the Mock, founded in 2012 by Brenda Glimpse and John and Ann Horner, who McNeal considers to be the “trailblazers” of the program. “Brenda had a host of notes and information for me to take on the program,” she says. “I just took her information and transformed it into a project plan that I could execute.” Rock the Mock is a two-and-a-halfhour program that provides high school students with hands-on interviewing skills. Students are instructed on how to
dress, the proper handshake and how to prepare for an interview. Each student participating in the program takes part in a 20-minute mock interview with volunteer community professionals. The program is presented to all three Morgan Hill high schools, Live Oak, Central and Ann Sobrato, December through February. Approximately 600 students have taken part in the program. Brenda Glimpse, a former chair of the Rock the Mock program, feels McNeal was a great benefit to the committee and led the program in a direction it needed to go. “She really captivates her audience and I thought that would be really good for the students,” says Glimpse. “Also, I just thought she would bring the program to another level. She’s very detail oriented, she comes with a lot of passion and ideas, and she’s very creative, so the program needed that for its next step.” ➝ 15

Opening of new trail in La Honda Creek Open Space Preserve offers visual treats in a moderate hike By RON ERKSINE
T
he southern portion of Skyline Boulevard twists and rolls along the crest of the peninsula hills alternating stunning views of the Pacific with full length Bay views that sweep from Mt. Tamalpais to Mt. Hamilton. I think of this road as a thread generously strung with outdoor pearls—Midpen preserves, county parks, and state parks—inviting us to get out and look closer. La Honda Creek Open Space Preserve is among the most lustrous of those pearls. Until recently, only a small portion of the 6,100acre preserve was open to the
public. Last November, the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District opened the lower portion of the preserve, a larger and more open property with sweeping distant views. Or so I heard. Time to verify the rumors. California State Route 84 climbs the peninsula hills as Woodside Road, then at Skyline Boulevard it changes to La Honda Road and begins its descent to the coast. Six miles down La Honda Road, a friend and I reached the sleepy berg for which the road is named. Directly across the street from the storied roadhouse, Apple Jack's Inn, we turned onto Sears Ranch
Road, which rose a half mile to the La Honda Creek OSP parking area. Much of the ride down from Skyline was through a dark forest of Douglas firs and redwoods, but we stepped from the car into wide open landscape of spring-green grassy slopes where most shade trees had retreated into the mountain's moist folds. Fences, cattle ponds, barns and other out buildings, and of course grazing cattle at La Honda OSP tell this land's ranching history that continues today. Over the first mile, we walked up a gentle ranch road to a low divide. From there, we looked across a vast two-mile wide bowl, virtually the entire landscape our route would traverse. At the far end, we could trace our path as it rose to the top of a huge round hill that we hoped would reveal special views. The first half of our walk across the bowl dropped steadily to Harrington Creek, where we began the climb to our target hill. Clumps of coyote brush dotted the grassy slopes. Tucked into the hill's wet creases, madrone, coast live oak, buckeye, and an occasional Douglas fir found comfortable homes. The hilltop view was all we hoped for and more. Wide ocean views reached from the San Gregorio Beach breakers beneath us to the horizon. Toward every compass point, the Santa Cruz Mountains showed crisp, clear, and beautiful. I can think of no finer spot for a well-earned peanut butter and jelly sandwich. While ongoing ranching activities serve an important purpose on these hills, they have left their mark. Widespread milk thistle, close cropped and trampled slopes, and an almost complete lack of wildflowers give the land a worn and tattered look. When you go, don't look down, look up. It's the amazing views that make this moderate 6.5-mile hike well worth the drive.

“Sandra McNeil epitomizes how volunteers bring their unique skills, experiences and passion to enhance a chamber program in an area of their personal interest,” according to a Chamber statement. “Sandra’s particular efforts have been focused around chamber youth initiatives, most significantly through her multi-year leadership of the Rock the Mock Program which specializes in interview skills training at MHUSD High Schools.”

It’s a step by step of what to do and how to do it.” Although she’s stepped away from the committee, McNeal is still very involved with the community. In 2015, she participated in the Leadership Morgan Hill program. The following year she joined the group’s board, and in 2017 she became a member of the Leadership Executive Board. “The last two years I’ve been running the project for State Government Day. So, I take the class up to Sacramento for two days,” McNeal says. “So, I put another project plan together and I’m executing it and hopefully I can pass that on.” Looking back on her work with Rock the Mock, McNeal is confident that the program will continue for years to come, benefiting hundreds more students. “It’s great to see after I pass it on that it’s continuing to thrive. We’re doing such a great job for the community and for the students,” McNeal says. “It’s a lifelong remembrance. They’ll come back after years and say, ‘hey, I remember when I took this class, and because of this workshop it helped me.”

McNeal is confident she made the right choice in joining the program when she did. “I’m really a servant. I’m really one to help and lead the way,” McNeal says. “As long as I stay on that path it feels good to me.” McNeal’s countless hours of volunteer work were recognized on Saturday, March 3, at the 60th “Celebrate Morgan Hill” event, where she was honored for being selected as the Volunteer of the Year for 2018.
McNeal was actually presented with the award late last year, which came as quite a surprise to her. “They staged it so well,” McNeal says explaining that she was called in to the chamber’s office by Diana Wood, who took over as chair of the program when McNeal stepped down in 2017. A few minutes later the office door opened and a large swarm of people, including Mayor Steve Tate, filled the room. “They kept coming and Marty (Cheek) is taking pictures and Mayor Tate he sat down next to me and then John (Horner), says, ‘You’ve been nominated as Volunteer of the Year.’ I was just blown away,” McNeal says. “I couldn’t believe it. And he did say it was because of Rock the Mock, where it is, and said I brought it to the next level.” Glimpse feels McNeal deserves to be singled out for her success with the program. “I’ve been working with Sandra for a lot of years and I know that she put in 100 percent genuine effort in everything that I’ve seen her do. I thought it was very fitting,” Glimpse says. Through McNeal’s efforts the program now has a viable project plan for all future members of the program, so the can pick up where she left off. “It’s going very well, they have
