ALLOW ME TO BE DIRECT? Six-time mayor Mike Rotkin says Santa Cruz residents shouldn’t elect their top official.

Does Santa Cruz Need a Full-Time Mayor?

Some are calling for a system that gives the mayor more power and responsibility BY JACOB PIERCE

T

here’s a good chance Hilary Bryant got home from work last night around 10 or 11pm, started writing emails before going to sleep, and woke up this morning at 5am to write more emails before the onslaught of daily messages poured in. All this for a mayoral post that is officially described as “part-time.”

But anyone who thinks Bryant works less than full-time as mayor of Santa Cruz is wrong. The meetings, events, commissions, staff reports and dozens of daily emails—each of which Bryant tries to respond to—add up.

“That alone makes it almost

impossible to think it of the job as parttime,” says Bryant, who works 40 to 60 hour weeks for the city. “Then you lay on any type of crisis. After [SCPD officers] Butch and Elizabeth died, I had to call my mom to ask her to move in with the kids to watch them because I was at work 11 or 12 hours a day.”

Bryant’s term comes in the midst of community chatter that the mayor’s job should be restructured—though it’s not a charge Bryant is leading.

Richelle Noroyan, for one, suggested switching the mayor to a full-time, better-paying post last year during her city council bid. Instead of rotating

through one-year terms, mayors could serve full-time terms for two or four years to look deeper into city issues.

County Treasurer Fred Keeley supports that kind of restructuring too, and a few former mayors are intrigued by the idea.

Ryan Coonerty, who announced his run for the county board of supervisors last week, is fully on board.

“Having a single voice for four years that can set a vision, communicate with consultants and companies and institutions is increasingly important,” former mayor Coonerty says. “The city is a $200-million-a-year organization, and it needs someone speaking for it full-

time. You can only set goals in one year.

And most meaningful goals take many years to move forward.”

The idea isn’t selling itself to everyone, though. Former mayor Mike Rotkin says it would just lead to divisiveness between the mayor and the staff or the mayor and the council.

“A separately elected mayor is a guarantee for a massive amount of energy thrown into a fight between the mayor and the council,” Rotkin says.

“It happens in every city that has [that system].”

Rotkin, a now-retired UCSC professor, says the council should attract people who are committed to a high level of service, but acknowledges the job comes with a heavy workload.

“The mayor’s job is 40 hours a week, and I had another full-time job, so I was working 80 hours a week, and that’s doable,” says Rotkin. Then again, Rotkin is an admitted workaholic, who served six terms as mayor and set the bar high for everyone else—every town’s got one.

Bryant, a mother of two whose husband owns Cruzn Pedicabs, says if she had another full-time job this year, she would have had to walk away from one of them.

Nowhere does city code specify how many hours the mayor is supposed to work. But the mayorship, notes city councilmember Don Lane, is “not compensated very well if you consider it a full-time job.”

Lane, whose most recent term as mayor ended last December, prefers the current council set-up, but does see the benefits of a full-time, directly elected mayor. He says that it’s confusing how the mayor doesn’t have a different specified role on the council, other than acting as the chair and performing a few ceremonial acts.

“And yet we have all this informal expectation,” Lane says, “about what we’re supposed to do as mayor, which I think is what people are trying to get at. Shouldn’t we recognize that this is a bigger job than chairing the city council meeting? On paper, that’s the

only difference. The city charter doesn’t describe a whole lot of extra duties for the mayor, other than running the city council meeting. But in fact there’s a tremendous expectation about being the spokesperson for the city.

Obviously, this year that’s been huge.”

Currently, the city has a city manager form of government. One thing Lane doesn’t want to do is take the day-to-day duties from the city manager, currently Martín Bernal, and give too much to a mayor, who may not have all the expertise needed to run a city.

“You really need a professional administrator to manage 10 department directors working under them and to manage a city budget,” Lane says. “You don’t just want an experienced amateur like me. I have some knowledge of management, but it’s not a substitute for professional training in budgeting, fiscal management and personnel administration.”

Coonerty, who supports mayoral restructuring, doesn’t want an independent “strong mayor” system that takes power away from Bernal, either. He says there are advantages, though, to a directly elected mayor.

It would be easier to keep long-term projects going because people wouldn’t have to re-establish contacts with each new mayor. Santa Cruz would have a figurehead, who could take the time to sell its accomplishments to an international audience. Plus the city can continue setting the bar high for its mayors and expect a lot during times of crisis.

And if the city does amend its city charter amendment by a vote of the people to make for a directly elected mayor, the city would likely need to increase the mayor’s compensation, as well. Otherwise, former mayors say, it would be hard to find qualified people willing to put their lives on hold for more than one year at a time for a small salary.

Whether a change ever happens or not, Coonerty and Lane both say a lot of people don’t fully grasp how the oneyear terms and city manager system work at the moment.

“When I was mayor, I was always surprised at how many people were surprised our mayor wasn’t elected directly,” Coonerty says. “Many people assume this is how it is, and would be surprised to hear how different it is.” 0

Briefs Social Distortion?

What makes for a fair discussion about public safety? That’s what some locals have been asking since last week, when a member of the city’s public safety task force left a Facebook comment on Take Back Santa Cruz’s page that elicited some, er, strong reactions.

“I’d be fine with junkies dying somewhere else,” Steve Schlitt wrote in a discussion about drug addiction, after a body was found in the San Lorenzo River. “Outside the county is fine by me.”

'I'd be fine with junkies dying somewhere else' — Steve Schlitt Whether Schlitt was being serious, sarcastic or insouciant, he struck a nerve, and someone took his comment from the TBSC page, which is open to members only, and emailed it to the city council, suggesting that Schlitt might not be fit for the task force.

Schlitt, who’s generally seen as one of Take Back Santa Cruz’s prevailing coolest heads, isn’t thrilled someone shared the information.

“This person went into a private Facebook group and sent it in a letter to city council,” says Schlitt, adding that he doesn’t have anything to apologize for. “The comment was taken out of context.”

Activist Brent Adams, who’s criticized TBSC in the past, says the comment “lacks a realistic approach to drug addiction,” and shows larger problems too.

“The task force is tasked with getting to the root of the problems,” Adams says, “but what we’ve seen to this point is they’re not interested in the roots of problems, just the same old story.”

Schlitt says that it was a closed discussion and that people are making noise about nothing.

“What transpired in the conversation was between the people in the conversation,” Schlitt says. “It was reprehensible someone would take me out of context.” 0

Method in the Madness At Young Actors’ Theatre Camp in Boulder Creek, they don’t just train budding thespians. Even more importantly, they encourage kids to discover their true selves by letting their freak flags fly BY GEORGIA PERRY

W

ith blue eyes, curly blond locks and a round babyface, 35-year-old Shawn Ryan was teased a lot growing up.

He says as late as the eighth grade adults would ask him if he was a little boy or a little girl. “That probably made me an introvert,” he admits.

In his career as an actor and jazz/cabaret singer who is perhaps best known for reaching the semifinals on the first season of America’s Got Talent, his look has helped him score some offbeat roles. He once appeared on the 2007 ABC series

Women’s Murder Club as “transgender narcoleptic drag king Karen Adams.” But it was a long journey, and Ryan claims theater saved his life.

“In high school I got a lot of, ‘hey fag’ as I was walking down the hall. Kids can be so mean to one another. I didn’t even know I was gay. I just knew people called me fag. I remember asking my sister like, ‘What is a fag?’”

But after a trip to New York to look at the American Academy for Dramatic Arts, where he eventually went to college, everything changed. “I remember coming back and being like, ‘There’s a whole world out there!’ So when my senior year started I walked

across those boys that called me fag every morning and I finally stopped and I went, ‘Are any of you gay?’ And they were like, ‘No.’ And I’m like, ‘OK, I just wanted to know if you’re calling me this name because one of you is interested in me, or are you just doing it to be mean?’ I am not kidding, it stopped that day.”

Ryan is co-director of the Young Actors’ Theatre Camp in Boulder Creek, which he founded with his partner John Ainsworth. In addition to the professional instruction, a big part of the camp’s purpose is to give kids that same sense of empowerment that theater gave Ryan when he was in high 13

DREAM WORKERS Shawn Ryan and John Ainsworth founded the Young Actors’ Theatre Camp together 12 years ago.

Escape From L.A. Ainsworth is just back from Los Angeles, where he auditioned for a Paranormal Activity-type movie.

Now he dangles his legs over the arm of a couch outside their cabin,

underneath the “Born This Way” flag.

Ryan sits in a plastic chair that until a few moments ago had a pink boa and a strand of fake pearls occupying it.

(Jokes Ryan: “These are actually real pearls. We just have so many we’re like, ‘Throw them wherever.’”)

“I’ve been called into this one casting office that does all the Lifetime, Hallmark Channel movieof-the-week-type things. They’ve called me eight times in the last seven months for eight different films,” says Ainsworth, who wears jeans and a faded baseball cap. “So it’s like, they really like me and really want me to be in one of the films, but they’re trying to find that perfect fit.

“Shawn, did you tell the reporter about the Macy’s thing?” he asks.

Ryan flew back to Los Angeles last week to audition for a national Macy’s spot, and is currently “on avail,” meaning he is one of two people they are considering for the job and is expected to keep the shoot dates available, kind of like a wedding “save the date.”

“Yeah, the phone call’s coming in today,” Ryan says with a wink in my direction. “We’ve already decided.”

“He said that on Saturday,” Ainsworth explains, “and I said, ‘Babe it’s Saturday.’ And he said, ‘It’s comin’ through on Monday.’”

Today is, by the way, Tuesday.

“OK, Tuesday,” Ryan shrugs. But then, he looks at the phone, and some textbook actor insecurity shines through. “It’s so hard!” he says playfully, throwing his arms in the air. “Please call!”

There are 100-120 kids at each session of the camp, and around 50 full time teachers and counselors.

The staff is encouraged to fly back to Los Angeles for any and all auditions that may come up during camp.

“We understand that the industry is what calls first,” says Ryan. “If you get a job in Los Angeles go, go, go, go.

Come back and show the kids that you just did an episode of you know, Big Time Rush.” (Big Time Rush is a Nickelodeon series about four former hockey players from Minnesota who move to Hollywood and form a boy band.)

Excited for the chance to see their camp director on the big screen, the

many professional adult actors may never learn.

Focusing on all aspects of “The Industry”—from acting, singing and dancing to filmmaking, choreography and casting—the camp is definitely geared toward the budding professional actor. In fact, there already are some young pros in their ranks.

“One of the kids in this session— Charlie—he auditions all the time,” gushes Ryan. “He’s the voice of the Leap Frog video games. So when it turns on and you hear, ‘Wanna play?’ that’s Charlie.”

The Young Actors’ Theatre Camp is the only “top five” kids’ acting camp that doesn’t require auditions to get in, says Ryan. Because of that fact— along with its price tag of $1,750 for a session, quite reasonable compared to over $3,000 at the other camps like it—“We open for registration and we sell out within like an hour. It’s like a concert ticket,” Ryan says. YATC also offers several scholarships to homeless and at-risk kids.

For the campers who don’t have the added confidence that no doubt accompanies amphibian-themed voice-over success, the whole “be whoever you want” thing has to be encouraged a bit.

“I’ll have parents call and say, ‘She’s interested in singing, but she’s not a great singer,’” admits Ryan, adding a quick caveat that, “I mean, obviously the kids who come to this camp have great parents who send them to this camp, so they’re great parents.”

But when that kid gets to camp and goes into her first voice lesson with her head down, saying she’s not a great singer, that’s when the camp initiation really begins.

“I’m like, ‘OK, let’s tack three words onto this: Up until now,’” says Ryan. “So anything you put out into the universe that’s negative about yourself you can always tack on ‘up until now.’ And you can say that as many times as you need to, because we have to reprogram ourselves.”

kids eagerly ask Ainsworth how his most recent audition went. He jumps on the opportunity for a teaching moment.

“Honestly, in this industry you have to go and do the audition and then walk away from it and forget about it,” he tells them, “because you likely will never hear if you don’t get it. You only hear if you do get it. And there’s like 40 other actors that were going in for the same role.”

Princess Power It’s day nine of the camp’s second two-week session, and Ryan is making morning announcements.

He brings up the hidden-talent show that is happening later today at

lunch, and a little girl wearing a pink t-shirt, a rhinestone tiara and pink sweatpants that look like they’ve seen a few days’ worth of outdoor playtime raises her hand.

“This is Natalie Tanner, everyone,” says Ryan, who wears teal shorts and a newsboy cap over his blond curls.

He invites her to come stand with him at the front of the cafeteria and everyone applauds, because they applaud at almost everything here.

He continues, with more than a touch of “hey girl” punchiness in his voice: “We all have our inner child, and this is exactly what I picture my inner child to look like—always wearing a tiara, sparkly and excited for the day.”

regarding the talent show: “My thing is, my dad forgot to bring my violin, and I do play it.”

Ryan feigns panic. “Can anyone whittle a violin before the talent show?” But luckily that won’t be necessary—a big kid offers to let Tanner borrow hers. Whew.

“Look at that, Natalie, we magically got you a violin!” says Ryan. As Tanner takes her seat, everyone applauds again. Why not, right?

Dream Boarders During the day, the campers have the opportunity to take a range of classes from working professionals.

There’s a film class, scene study, dance and even a “Dream Board”

class taught by Ryan’s mother, who is a professional motivational speaker.

(Dream Boards are collages with pictures of your goals—think The Secret.) Master classes from big names such as Sutton Foster, who starred in Thoroughly Modern Millie on Broadway, as well as Jonathan Groff and Darren Criss from the hit FOX series Glee, are one of the camp’s biggest draws. Campers are even invited to sign up for coveted one-onone sessions with the celebrities.

Today there is a class called “Power Breathing” taught by Chris Dilley, a professional singer and teacher who currently tours with an a capella theater show called Voca People.

Dilley has a bright white grin and a muscular chest. He plays piano and leads the kids in a singing warmup where they belt vowel sounds in different octaves. However, there is a catch. The kids each have a plastic straw and have been instructed

by Dilley to try to sing the exercise while sticking their tongues out and using them to hold the straws just underneath their lower lips.

“Our tongue has a habit of tightening up when we sing,” he explains, which can cause it to go back and block the hole leading to the air supply and limiting the power of a singer’s voice.

“This exercise is about teaching the tongue where it should be.”

While most of the kids stumble through the exercise, catching their straws as they drop—the tongue is a muscle that needs to develop strength just like any other—Dilley holds his straw easily with his tongue and plays the piano with both hands. Afterwards he has them stretch by sticking out their tongues, then wag their heads from side to side like dogs.

“Whose tongue is sore?” he prompts. Everyone nods and moans.

That’s good, though. “Did you think you were just gonna sit in a chair for an hour and ‘la la la?’”

The Show As the lunchtime talent show takes place near the picnic tables outside the main cafeteria, everyone is remarkably attentive. Unlike adult open mic nights, where the performers go into self-absorbed trances a couple slots before and after their individual sets, these kids give their full attention to whomever is onstage and, of course, treat them to raucous applause when they finish.

The talents are not quite what you would expect, either. While there are some spot-on drama camp moments—one girl belts out a perfect soprano opera while wearing pink gym shorts—a lot of it resembles the kind of stuff you might see at any summer camp’s

When it is time for Natalie Tanner’s much-anticipated violin solo, the instrument is too big for her to support on her own. She is one of the littlest kids at camp. But again, it is no problem. The owner of the violin, a teenage girl wearing knee-high laceup Converse sneakers and a monkey hat, holds up the other end of the violin for Tanner. Another kid holds up her music book. Tanner performs a song very slowly, with pauses between each note for her to get her fingering and bow placement right. The campers and staff hang on every note.

When she’s done, the crowd erupts into the biggest applause of the day.

Drama With No Drama After the talent show, a few teenage

campers sit down for an interview.

They’re quick to explain why they feel so comfortable here.

“Meanness is, like, not an option here. You get kicked out of camp if you’re mean,” says 13-year-old Natalie Cheyette of Burlingame.

Cheyette got stage-mommed into the industry, landing a job as a department store model when she was just four years old. She says she likes performing because of the attention, and being at camp because of the friendly atmosphere and how everyone has similar interests. “I am not much into sports, and many of the people here are also not that much into sports, so you don’t have to make small talk about sports,” she says.

“It would be really hard to make a movie out of this, ’cause there’s no drama. Everyone’s so nice and there aren’t mean girls,” adds 15-year-old Sara Narragon, who is from Santa Cruz. “You learn more than just performing here, you learn how to treat people. I’m probably gonna leave here and somebody’s gonna say something mean to me and I’ll be like, ‘OK, that’s cool!’”

Sally Shields has long, straight hair and a laid-back ingénue look that casting agents could probably describe as a “Mischa Barton type.”

Shields is still glowing from a recent master class with LA casting director Ty Harman.

“He was sitting over there and I went up and introduced myself and after a [brief] conversation he was like, ‘Definitely get Shawn to tell me if you come down to L.A. anytime, I’ll give you my information.’”

Like her campmates, she is quick to assert that, yes, she wants to make it.

Yes, these kids want to be famous.

“Everyone wants to perform,” says Shields. “No matter what aspect— acting, singing, dancing—everyone is here because that’s what they want to do.”

Ryan and Ainsworth just want to do their best to help them achieve those goals.

“People ask us all the time, ‘You guys will make such great parents, are you gonna have kids?’” says Ryan.

“And we're like, ‘We have 500 kids.’

I may not have had any kids of my own, but I definitely feel like I've had a hand in raising a couple. And I'm so proud of them all.” 0

erek Bermel’s trans-cultural composition Dust Dances will open this season's Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music. That is not news. But what is news is that the composer himself will conduct this piece inspired by West African percussion idioms, specifically the 14-key gyil, after maestra Marin Alsop injured her wrist July 1.

“There's some sadness about stepping in for Marin,” Bermel admits. “I would have been thrilled to hear her conduct my music. But she thought it would be interesting for the audience and the musicians to have me direct. It's a chance to communicate directly with the performers.”

Even though this is composer Bermel's first Cabrillo Festival appearance, he will be among many musician friends and colleagues.

“Kevin Puts and I were in Rome together,” he says of the 2012 Pulitzer Prize winner whose work will also be performed at the opening concert. “I have a lot of musical friends who will be performing—it’s a thrill to be here because the Cabrillo orchestra is great, and has so many great players. It’s fun to work with colleagues from all over the country.”

And for opening night audiences, Bermel will provide a rare opportunity to hear the composer conducting his own work.

“I'm not technically an ethnomusicologist,” Bermel notes,

“but let's say I’m interested in music in context. I like to be in the place where the music originated, and hear it in context. Rather than on YouTube,” he jokes.

It was on a visit to Ghana and the Ivory Coast that Bermel encountered the gyil players and drummers who inspired his composition. “I wrote the piece 20 years ago, so it’s sort of an anniversary performance for me.”

Recalling the origins of Dust Dances Bermel admits that it was perhaps his “first mature statement. I was trying to synthesize aspects of the solo African instrument—it was challenging. I was taking a non-Western, non-tempered scale, and translating that form into an orchestral instrumentation. I was taking the harmonic landscape of the xylophone and drum and transforming that for orchestra.”

Back in Brooklyn now after four years as Artist-in-Residence at Princeton’s Institute for Advanced Study, Bermel is finishing up a musical called Golden Motors that he'll be workshopping at Reed College in September. But for the next two weeks, the Dust Dances composer will be in Santa Cruz—and promises to show up for “everything the Festival wants me to be at.—Christina Waters”

Conspiracy of Dunces Sexist fools go wild to hilarious effect in SSC’s ‘Shrew’

T

heatre companies always seem to approach Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew as a problem to be solved. Which is understandable, since the play is on one level pretty much a celebration of domestic abuse. Even more bizarrely— and unlike that other politically incorrect terror from the First Folio, The Merchant of Venice—it’s a wacky comedy.

Over the course of many productions, I’ve seen directors try everything to make the most sexist parts of this play go down smoother. Sarcasm is the most common weapon of choice—as in “let’s all act like we know this is terrible stuff”—but the least effective. If you’re going to present this play, there’s really no point in being embarrassed about it. Paul Whitworth handled it most brilliantly in 2004, when he staged both Shrew and the tables-turning sequel

by John Fletcher, The Woman’s Prize (better known as The Tamer Tamed).

But for this production, director Edward Morgan has more or less thrown caution to the wind, if anything playing up the battle of the sexes that causes other producers so much hand wringing. In the process, he’s made Shrew laugh-out-loud funny again; in fact, this may be the most purely entertaining take on Taming of the Shrew you ever see.

I’m sorry, but actors trying to come off as cool, sophisticated and, worst of all, “above the material” is just not

funny. Morgan’s male cast members, on the other hand, are willing to play their characters as raging idiots, at times reaching Monty Python levels of absurd arrogance, but always with complete conviction in what they’re saying and doing. Fred Arsenault plays Petruchio, the famed shrew tamer, like some kind of cross between Captain Kirk and Phil Hartman, full of incredible and inexplicable straight-faced bluster. At one point, he and his servant Grumio (played by Conan McCarty) are practically doing Abbott and Costello.

William Elsman’s Hortensio, one of the trio of suitors plotting for the love of the shrew’s sister Bianca, maintains a similarly side-splitting air of emptyheadedness, mistakenly convinced he is always the smartest guy in the room.

Even Lucentio, normally portrayed as the brave and clever hero, gets a dose of charming dumbassedness from Elvin McRae. The women go for broke, as well, though Kate (Gretchen Hall) and Bianca (Victoria Nassif) are mostly raging straight women for the men’s comic antics.

Cabrillo Stage’s ‘Oklahoma!’ masterfully turns movement into narrative

abrillo Stage’s production of Oklahoma! is a testament to the theatre company’s ability to reach the heights of a fullyintegrated musical masterpiece.

Set in the Oklahoma frontier on the cusp of statehood, the plot revolves around an animated cast of local farmers and cowhands navigating love’s complicated waters in their idyllic community. Naysayers who claim that Rogers and Hammerstein are not for them, prepare to leave the theatre with a light heart and a sappy grin on your face. This show is outstanding.

First off, the performances are all top notch. Matthew J. Taylor commands the stage from the opening “Oh What A Beautiful Morning” with macho bravado as a cowhand in love with the beautiful and stubborn Laurey, played sweetly and expertly by Emily M. Marsilla. The chemistry between these two characters makes the traditional love story convincing.

Vanessa Vazquez is unendingly charming as the flirtatious Ado Annie opposite Jordan Sidfield’s idiot-with-a-heart-of-gold Will Parker. Sassy no-nonsense Aunt Ellen (Alice Hughes) is a peach, and roguish peddler Ali Hakim’s (Andrew Ceglio) affectations are hilarious. Kevin Johnston’s nuanced performance of the vulnerable

and vindictive farmhand Jud Fry is captivating, and at times downright scary.

The skill of the supporting cast really takes this production to another level. The bar is set pretty high in this masterpiece, and the audience is not left wanting.

Director and choreographer Kikau Alvaro must be commended for translating movement into storytelling, most obviously in the ensemble’s performance of the classic Dream Sequence ballet.

Other numbers worth humming for days post-performance are “Kansas City”, “I Cain’t Say No!” and, of course, the title song.

The set design is beautiful, with the off-kilter angles and rich colors adding an element of fantasy. And it’s a treat for the ears to hear Roger and Hammerstein’s immortal songs rendered by such a skillful orchestra, under the masterful conducting of Jon Nordgren.

When it comes to standing out from the crowd, no one did it quite like Sun Ra. The keyboard-playing philosopher, poet, composer and bandleader with a penchant for all things cosmic left a trail of musical stardust behind him when he passed that still resonates through the jazzo-sphere. His longtime, ever-morphing band, the Arkestra, now led by Marshall Allen, keeps the spirit of the legendary artist alive with performances that honor the far-out, not-of-this-world, spiralingthrough-time-and-space aesthetic that Sun Ra embodied. It's hard to hear “down by the river” and not think of Chris Farley's motivational speaker character on SNL. But these words are also a popular song of the reggae band Morgan Heritage. Though they are far from Farley's wacky antics, the Royal Family of Reggae still knows how to bring joy to an audience.

For almost 20 years, they’ve been performing, making albums and touring around the world, building up their confidence, skills and fan base. They began as a teen quintet and are now one of contemporary reggae's most powerful forces, some calling them the Rolling Stones of Reggae. Moe's Alley; $25 adv/$30 door; 9pm. (Melanie Ware)

Zimbabwean artist Oliver Mtukudzi’s commitment to confronting socio-economic and political issues throughout his 35-year career of music and film has made him an international icon and humanitarian ambassador. His unique style and voice, nicknamed “Tuku music” by his fans, combines traditional African instruments like mbira and marimba with soulful and energetic acoustic guitar. Mtukudzi’s lyrics, which are characterized by their innuendo, extol his philosophy that one must communicate figuratively if one is to be understood universally.

Part entertainment and part education, Mtukudzi is a powerful musician with a message. Kuumbwa; $22 adv/$25 door; 7pm & 9pm. (Lily Stoicheff)

I’m quite sure at this point that Ty Segall is franchising out his name—there’s no way this guy put out three records with three different lineups last year, right? The San Francisco rocker has been releasing albums for five years or so, and he’s got somewhere between seven and 392. With such a steady supply of material, I’m actually thinking of opening a branch location of Ty Segall myself. I certainly like his upcoming release Sleepers, and I hope it convinces everyone to put the “garage rock” tag to rest for a while. Not that he doesn’t play garage rock, but he’s proven he can do so much more, and on this moody, reverb-drenched album he completes his transformation into the second coming of Syd Barrett. Let me just float a visual by you: There’s a barefoot Australian guy playing a veritable wall of instruments including three didgeridoos, bells and an assortment of drums.

On his lap is a guitar and within arm’s reach is a stompbox, bass guitar, banjo and whatever else this one-man band might need. He starts playing music that sounds like one part Jack Johnson, one part outback and one part lo-fi blues, singing songs of whales, indigenous rights and the environment. That, my friends, is Xavier Rudd; a singer-songwriter-activist with skills to boot and something to say.

DONNA THE BUFFALO The Grateful Dead have deadheads, Jimmy Buffett has parrotheads and Donna the Buffalo has the herd, a loyal following of appreciators who’ve been with the band throughout its 20-plus year history. But this New York-based roots outfit works on a much smaller, quieter scale than the Dead and Buffett, playing catchy-yet-humble folk-rock music that lends itself well to evening dance-alongs, outdoor festivals and easy fun.

THE CONJURING (R; 112 min.) Two ghost hunters investigate a house in Rhode Island and get very freaked out by what they find in this based-on-a-true-story tale from 1971.

DESPICABLE ME 2 (PG; 98 min.) How often is the most anticipated film of the summer an animated movie? That isn’t made by Pixar? Right, and yet the first movie was the movie that was more than just a big moneymaker. It also bubbled up from nowhere on the cultural radar, with fans watching it over and over with the same kind of passion normally reserved for a Nolan Batman flick.

The main characters—Steve Carell as former supervillain Gru, Miranda Cosgrove as Margo, Russell Brand as Dr. Nefario, etc.—are all back in this story of what happens when world leaders call upon Gru’s expertise to defeat a new villain.

FRUITVALE STATION (PG-13; 126 min) Hmm, wonder if anyone in the Bay Area’s heard about this Oscar Grant guy? Wait, something’s coming back now, like how his shooting

by BART police in Oakland was one of the most shocking stories of 2008, sparked massive protests and set police-community relations in NorCal back 20 years. Yeah, that Oscar Grant.

This drama follows his story on the last day of his life.

GROWN UPS 2 (PG-13; 102 min.) Apparently, this is Adam Sandler’s first sequel. I guess we can be thankful it’s not Jack and Jill 2, but c’mon, a Wedding Singer sequel was out of the question? Even Happy Gilmore 2 seems like a better bet, but whatever.

Kevin James, Chris Rock and David Spade return as the other grown ups, who have moved back to their hometown.

MONSTERS UNIVERSITY (G; 110 min) When people talk about the greatest Pixar movies, Monsters Inc. never seems to get mentioned. And yet, it is awesome. Why Cars got a sequel before Sulley and Mike is anyone’s guess, but at least it’s here now.

Technically, it’s a prequel,

with John Goodman and Billy Crystal returning to tell the story of how the pair got into the scare business.

PACIFIC RIM (PG-13; 131 min) Guillermo Del Toro, best known for flipping easily between dark, personal films like Pan’s Labryinth and offbeat crowd-pleasers like Hellboy, goes for broke with his biggest film ever, a battling-robot movie with more soul than Transformers. Actually, it combines the Japanese Kaiju genre (monster attack movies of which the Godzilla series is the most famous) and mecha (robot-centric) genres: this time, when the sea monsters (appropriately called “kaiju” here) come, humans beat them back with giant robots.

RED 2 (PG-13; 116 min.)

Frank (Bruce Willis) hasn’t killed anyone in months, and Marvin (John Malkovich) convinces him to come out of retirement and chase down a nuclear device in this star-studded sequel with Catherine Zeta Jones, Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren.

R.I.P.D. (PG-13; 96 min.)

Ryan Reynolds dies, gets hired by the Rest In Peace Department and starts chasing around and scaring monsters as Jeff Bridges’ sidekick. Think Men In Black with Ryan Reynolds as Will Smith.

THE SMURFS 2 (PG; 109 min) The official plot summary for this movie is 600 words long. It contains the phrases “time-traveling Smurfs,” “using the Eiffel Tower as a conduit” and “the evil wizard puts them into his Smurfalator.” Who directed this, David Lynch?

TURBO (PG) It’s hard to imagine some executive at Dreamworks didn’t say “I want Ratatouille meets Cars!” when they came up with this story of a snail who dreams of competing in the Indy 500. Guess if he does!

THE WOLVERINE (PG13; 126 min.) No, not that Wolverine movie from 2009, this is the new Wolverine movie from 2013, which is of course a sequel to the X-Men movie from 2006.

This time, Hugh Jackson goes to Japan and has to fight samurai while not being immortal. I hate when that happens.

Yes, the name does say it all: Finished without oak, aged instead in stainless steel. Lovely varietal flavors and a long mineral finish. Hurry!... And Germaine Akin of the Red emails me to admit that things have moved, ahem, slowly with her new Wharf project. But movement is occurring. Maybe early fall? Stay tuned.

THE EVOLUTION OF GABRIELLA: Always charming, Gabriella Cafe

reconsider and then fine-tune some more as far as its kitchen philosophy goes. A national pioneer in searching out local seasonal ingredients, Paul Cocking’s popular and stylishly laid back establishment has hit a vibrant summertime stride. Dishes stress well-prepared signature ingredients— sensuous pastas, textbook seafoods, inventive salads and now the hippest focaccia in town, made from locally grown organic low-gluten wheat (no kidding!) from the maverick hand of entrepreneur Ryan Roseman.

We started with a shared plate of rich and crunchy roasted Brussels sprouts tossed with hazelnuts and then moved on to splendid salads of beautiful pink and green butter lettuces, splashed lightly with honey-lemon vinaigrette and dotted with walnuts, chèvre and Fog Skin melon. Salad the way a locavore god intended. A pasta interlude of nettle

tagliatelle arrived perfumed with flavors at once delicate and full-throated.

Strewn with delicacies from the sea— tender calamari, sea bass, mussels in their shells—the not-exactly-al-dente noodles were laced with deep green ribbons of poblano pepper and tiny orange cherry tomatoes, all bathed in the juices of the ingredients. An entree of tasty seared duck breast arrived so rare that only a few pieces were retrievable (the extreme slices we took home to heat up to the perfect point of doneness for lunch the next day). An accompanying succotash of sour cherries, crisp veggies and farro made a textural statement.

Dessert was gorgeous—pale green basil panna cotta, with sliced strawberries, toasted pistachios and nectarine sauce.

The flavor in the panna cotta remained sotto voce. The noise level had hit five bells halfway through the meal—one of the only drawbacks to dining here on a Friday night. Our wines—a glass of lively Verdelho 2010 Quinta Cruz and cherryred Grenache 2011 from Birichino— worked beautifully with the dinner, and the warm summer night.

enji Mo moved to Santa Cruz from China 10 years ago. Now a graduate of UC Davis, 25-year-old Mo opened Betty’s Noodle House last year. He operates the restaurant, located at the Metro bus station on Pacific Avenue, with his girlfriend Betty and her mom Lina.

SCW: Why not Benji’s Noodle House? Benji’s a guy’s name—not very

attractive. And also she’s my girlfriend, and I want to marry her.

Did you put the pho in fun? Yeah, it’s really fun. It’s more like a salad

and soup, because you get a side of green sprouts. And we do the soup separately, and we do the noodles separately. It’s a very American way to make noodle soup.

Do you like spicy food? [Nodding] Mmmh-hmm. And when I eat

spicy food, I always drink root beer. It makes the meal more tasty. It makes you feel like you’re flying in the sky.

What’s your favorite vegetable? Eggplant. It’s really tasty. And Betty’s mom Lina can make a very good eggplant dish. Also it’s really healthy.

What are your favorite dishes? I like a noodle bowl, a stir fry. I like the ginger noodle bowl or chili tofu appetizer—it’s crispy outside and really soft inside. It gives you a surprise when you bite it. And I’m also a big eggplant fan, so I eat C4, eggplant noodle bowl, a lot.

What’s most popular? People in this town like ginger a lot. The ginger

noodle bowl and ginger noodle soup are really popular.

What’s the hardest to make? Betty’s noodle Soup, B9. That’s the most

difficult because we first stir-fry the onion, the vegetables. We mix the sauce. We put the sauce into the broth. And then at the end you add the egg.

Do you get any ingredients from China? No, that would be really expensive. Mostly we get them from San Francisco, and sometimes we have to go to San Jose to pick it up ourselves.

What’s your favorite part of this job? Creating the menu because my

major was graphic design. And I always think I should use what I learned from school to put into what I’m doing. I’m really proud of myself. Even though it isn’t very professional or good-looking, I did a good job.
