Thankfully, that’s exactly what the organizers of the San Benito County Saddle Horse Show & Rodeo are doing.

Writer Jenny Arbizu takes an in-depth look at the 86th annual event in this week’s cover story, highlighting the new food, activities and

other entertainment. The event kicks off with the breakfast and parade in downtown Hollister on June 22, and gets underway in full June 28.

With more than 2,500 people attending the event every day, most are from San Benito County, said show board president Ross Rianda. It’s a great way to get together with neighbors and enjoy the summer season.

“This is a local event, just San Benito County residents; it’s kind of a unique deal,” he said. “I think it’s more of a social event than an actual horse show and rodeo. If people expect to see a professional rodeo that they see on television, that’s not what they’re going to see out here. But they’re going to see a good competition.”

And they’ll experience some great pre-rodeo events as well.

Saturday, June 22 will kick off these events in Hollister with a breakfast served in front of Hollister Veterans’ Memorial Building at 649 San Benito St. The cost per breakfast is $15.

At 11am, the Saddle Horse Show Parade will get underway on San

Benito Street, starting at the intersection of Haydon Street and finishing on Fifth Street.

More than 50 community entries are expected to be in the parade, including marching bands, floats, horsemen and horsewomen, the 2019 Miss San Benito County Rodeo, as well as many community groups.

Hollister Concerts at Pepper Tree Ranch, 500 John Smith Road, will finish the day’s kick-off with a concert by The Long Run and Neon Circus. Miss San Benito County Rodeo, who will be announced on June 15, will also be introduced during the concert.

The county’s unofficial kick-off to summer has taken locals back to the early days of San Benito since 1929 (ceasing operation from 1942-45 during World War II), and locals still find the same old-time competition continues today.

Ross Rianda, president of the SBC Saddle Horse Association Board, said locals can expect the same kind of entertainment and small-town comradery this year.

make that community connection,” said Al Guerra, owner of Hollister Concerts.

The SBC Saddle Horse Show & Rodeo begins on Friday, June 28 at Bolado Park & Event Center at 9000 Airline Highway in Tres Pinos.

Charlie Tobias, a director on the Saddle Horse Association Board, encourages families to come out and see such events as the cattle sorting (three-man teams), the family team roping or the kids’ events such as the ribbon race.

“Bolado Park is such a nice location to come and enjoy the show and see many of our community members participating,” Tobias said.

While every weekend morning begins with roping and sorting events (free to the public), the vendors of the Western Art & Tack Show will begin selling at 3pm, leading into an evening of food and entertainment.

Rebecca Wolf, also a director on the board, said this year’s food

choices have been changed up from past events.

“We’re doing something different, and I think it will be exciting because people have become real foodies,” Wolf said. “So we’re trying to have different people out there.”

Before the show begins at 7pm that evening, wine and beer tasting will be offered to the public, starting at 4:30pm.

“We will have Martin Pulido playing that night. And we have beef and pork sliders, and sweet potato fries from our caterer, Jimmy’s Watering Hole,” added Wolf, noting its the first time the SBC Saddle Horse Show will feature the Paso Robles caterer. “The Hollister Rotary will be serving beer, wine, soft drinks and water during the show, and then we have food trucks this year.”

Wolf said Louie’s Smokey Trails, Ohana’s Shave Ice and We’ll Cook For You (which features typical fair food, from hamburgers to funnel cakes) are a part of the food line-up.

“For $25, you get five tastings and two sliders for the event,” she said.

The show begins at 1:30pm on Saturday, June 29, and Wolf suggested guests arrive earlier to partake in food and socializing.

“We’d love people to come early, come around noon,” she said. “A lot of people are milling around, you can get breakfast from Jimmy’s Watering Hole, or you can get your lunch and can eat it out front, then go into the show.”

After the show, guests are invited to attend a steak barbecue, as well as a silent and live auction fundraiser. The cost is $25 per person and $8 per child.

“The Aromas Quarry Boys are providing entertainment,” Wolf said. “They’re terrific. They play fiddles, banjos and guitars, and sing old Western music to bluegrass to everything. So it will be fun this year.”

The weekend will culminate on Sunday, June 30, with Stock Horse Class Eliminations at 8am, the

Western Art & Tack Show at 11am and a show at 1:30pm.

Wolf said visitors can expect to see more than just entertaining shows this year.

A newly remodeled Saddle Horse Show museum for guests to peruse will be located at the south end of the grandstands. The extended museum is “wonderful to come out and see,” Wolf said.

A real stagecoach will be on the premises, provided by Mark Page of Sonora.

“We’re going to try to have rides on the stagecoach,” Wolf said. “And he also has a chuckwagon that was used in the movies and on [the television show] ‘Big Valley.’ That will be staged out front as well.”

he first-ever Coyote Creek Concours d’Elegance is set for June 23, 10am-4pm at the Coyote Creek Golf Club in Morgan Hill.

Concours Development Director John Ficarra said most people think of Concours as “old American steel,” featuring vehicles built in the 1930s and ‘40s. But at Coyote Creek Concours, anything that is considered rare and a collector’s item are fair game.

The group even invented its own class of cars known as “Gen-Excellent,” featuring vehicles from the ‘80s and ‘90s.

“We have pony cars and race

cars, imports, a little bit of everything,” he said.

Featured marques, or make of vehicle, at the event are Corvette and Ferrari. A slew of other classes will join these cars, including American sports cars, Japanese cars, cars of Morgan Hill/Gilroy and many others.

Cars will be judged by class, and judges will be scrutinizing every detail from tires to roof and everything in between. Awards will be handed out at the conclusion of the event.

Ficarra said the event moved to Coyote Creek after two successful years at the Alameda Naval Air Station.

Concours d’Elegance, a third event in the same location was planned in 2018, but issues with the water main that irrigated the grass resulted in the field being ripped out for repairs.

That is a major issue for Concours, as such events traditionally take place on a lawn, Ficarra said.

Organizers began searching for a new location in the Bay Area, with three candidates making the list. But Coyote Creek rose above the rest with its easily accessible and picturesque location, he said.

“Coyote Creek was by far the best,” he said. “It’s a gorgeous facility.”

The Coyote Creek Concours will be donating a portion of the proceeds to Operation Freedom Paws, a San Martin-based nonprofit that pairs shelter dogs with veterans and other people experiencing physical or psychological disabilities.

Individuals are taught how to train their own dog, and are certified as a service dog team following the 48-week program.

Brenda Shiplett, director of marketing for Operation Freedom Paws, said the organization is thrilled to be chosen as the beneficiary of the Concours.

Each team costs roughly $16,000, which includes vet bills, dog food, support and other services, according to Shiplett. The organization relies on private donations, as well as revenue from its kennel and training services that are open to the public.

“This is huge for us,” she said.

While registration has also ended for owners to enter their cars to be judged in the June 23 event, they can still showcase their vehicles in the “Corral” section of the Concours.

Registration ends June 17.

The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District (Midpen) bought the 1,432acre property in 1999, ending the battle with the developer who planned to build luxury homes and a 200-acre golf course. iving in the San Francisco Bay Area is a mixed bag. The comings and goings of eight million residents lead to crowding and congestion that can test the limits of patience.

But we are blessed to be surrounded by more open space than any metro area in the nation. Time in the natural world, the tonic for our restoration, is never far away.

As a part of my work with Committee for Green Foothills, I was treated to a sneak peak at the newest chunk of open space to be set

Midpen finally had the funds to do the work necessary to open Bear Creek Redwoods OSP to the public. My visit was a week prior to the June 10 opening of the preserve.

Upper Lake, a mill pond adjacent to the preserve’s staging area, is encircled by a quarter-mile ADA-accessible nature trail that highlights some of the natural and human history of the area. Our Midpen guide showed us two large acorn grinding mortars left behind by the Ohlone people. Farther along the path, St. Joseph’s Shrine recalled the period from 1934 to 1989 when the Jesuit school, Alma College, was here.

Tiptoeing past workers busy with final construction tasks, we crossed Bear Creek Road to the foot of the Alma Trail. The trail begins as a series of switchbacks built by Midpen staff that zigzag up to a logging road. Up, up, and more up through a dense forest of Douglas fir, redwoods, big leaf maple, bay and more. The thick canopy lets little light reach the forest floor and blocks all but the narrowest views, but with warm days just around the corner, the Alma Trail looked to be a rare and handy refuge from the heat.

A mile and a half up the trail, we came upon two old-growth redwoods that somehow escaped the clear-cutting that stripped this slope long ago. My goodness, a person would need to pack a lunch just to walk around either one of these monarchs. Thirty feet up, the larger of the two trees split and supported two separate trunks impressive in their own right.

The huge tracts of open space we enjoy in the Bay Area and new preserves like Bear Creek Redwoods OSP do not happen by accident.

It happens when dedicated people do hard and persistent work.

f you pass by me on the street and think I look familiar, you are right. I was indeed a child star. I was on camera for three seconds when I was 5 years old, attending a taping of “Bozo the Clown” on a local Boston television station.

Feel free to ask for my autograph.

I am still amazed that no one from “Dancing With the Stars” has called to check on my availability.

All joking aside, it has been fun to discover that a number of the seniors here at Live Oak Adult

Day Services have actually interacted with some true celebrities, and they love to share their stories.

Lenny grew up in the area picking strawberries alongside a young man named Ricardo Valenzuela.

Ricardo sang all day as he worked, much to Lenny’s delight. Lenny was overjoyed when he first heard “La Bamba” on the radio, realizing that his friend Ricardo was now known as Richie Valenz. He still laments his early passing.

Rosa was a concert pianist who traveled all over the world. She got

to know more musicians and performers than we can keep track of. She maintains the discretion of one in show business, declining to share any gossip. She will admit, however, that Frank Sinatra was “nice,” and Elvis Presley was “beautiful,” fondly recalling that when she ran into him at a party, he kissed her cheek. Her current favorite is Josh Groban, a performer she feels is unmatched in his talents. She still likes to sit at our piano to entertain us by playing everything from classical music to show tunes. As one who struggled to read music and play piano without frequent stops and starts, I find her to be an inspiration.

One of our favorite celebrity stories was told by Paul, who attended here a while back. Charles Lindbergh came to his small town in Iowa on a barnstorming tour, offering flying lessons to interested residents. Paul was a teenager at the time, fascinated by flight, and he jumped at the chance to fly with the world’s most famous aviator. He continued to take lessons, eventually becoming a pilot with a major airline. The most amazing part of the story, in my opinion, is that his pilot’s license was signed by his instructor, Charles Lindbergh, and

by Wilbur Wright of the Wright Brothers. Such amazing history.

And right here at Live Oak we had a visit from a beloved member of the San Francisco 49ers, when one of his family members attended our program. I recall that he was much taller and thinner than I expected, but so kind and patient with his relative here. It made me realize that regardless of fame and wealth, so many families must cope with chronic illness and caregiving responsibilities. We are united in our journeys through all the challenges that life throws our way.

If robbing nearby garden plants of sunlight and nutrients wasn’t bad enough, common groundsel is also a carrier of several fungal diseases. It can host Cineraria leaf rust (Coleosporium tussilagini). It can also carry the fungus that causes black rot, another fungal disease that can affect citrus, chickpeas, cucurbits, such as cucumber and melon, tomatoes and peas.

A toxic weed While hailed as a medicinal plant by some, common groundsel contains chemicals called pyrrolizidine alkaloids that can cause irreparable liver damage. You’d have to eat an awful lot of it, but you may want to avoid feeding it to your chickens, just to be on the safe side.

ew weeds come up as quickly and resiliently as common groundsel.

Also known as oldman-in-the-spring, this European annual weed prefers San Benito’s cool, wet winter weather, dying off each summer, but it never fails to return each year.

Common groundsel description Like other members of the sunflower family, common groundsel (Senecio vulgaris) features a sunny yellow flower. Akin to dandelion, mature seed heads transform into

puffballs that fly on every breeze.

The flowers of common groundsel are smaller than dandelions, and the green bracts have black tips.

The plant has an upright growth, normally growing 16 inches tall.

Common groundsel features pinnately lobed leaves (with matching loops and curves on either side) that may be toothed along the edges. Leaves are smaller near the top of the plant and may be covered with fine hairs. The leaves are sessile, which means they attach directly to the plant. The stems are hollow and the root system is a shallow taproot.

Common groundsel is self-pollinating. Each plant can produce 1,700 seeds, and there can be three generations per year. That ends up being a lot of weeds! The best way to control common groundsel is to prevent it from spreading in the first place. This means snatching seed heads any time they are seen and tossing them in the trash. Seedlings are far easier to pull than mature plants, so learn to recognize them and pull them out every time they are seen. Heavy common groundsel infestations can be slowed or halted with sheet mulching.

As with all weeds, this is an ongoing battle. Because these plants carry disease, it is better to be vigilant.
