FRUITS OF HER LABOR MARCH 8, 2019

Hollister’s Youth Alliance director Diane Ortiz dedicates her life to the community BY JENNY ARBIZU

4

D

iane Ortiz is not one to rest on her laurels. In fact, the executive director of Hollister’s Youth Alliance has been working since she was 13 years old. And even after she received her master’s degree in social work from San Jose State University, got married and had two children, the Hollister native sought more.

“I was a stay-at-home mom, so of course being the crazy type-A personality that I am, I thought, ‘Well, I could go back to graduate school now,’” she laughs. Ortiz not only thrives when busy, but when she knows her busyness is making a difference: Her strong work ethic and expertise have been immeasurable assets to the youth in San Benito and southern Santa Clara counties.

The Youth Alliance (YA)—a nonprofit organization, now located in Hollister, Gilroy and Morgan Hill— was co-founded by Ortiz, her father Joe Ortiz, and the late Jo Wahden, a former San Benito County librarian. It began in Hollister in 1995 as an all-volunteer grassroots organization that “strives to create thriving and equitable communities through comprehensive,

innovative and culturally relevant services that equip youth and families to become change agents in their own lives and in their community,” according to its website. It has since evolved into an agency that benefits over 13,000 children, youth and their families each year. The daughter of Joe Ortiz and Margie Diener, Ortiz attended

realized I wasn’t going to be [one],” she says. “I loved [my time there]. It was just an amazing opportunity.” And it became a life-changing one, too. While in Micronesia, Ortiz met a four-year-old girl named Cyndi and her family, and was soon asked by her family if Ortiz could adopt her. “I was still in college, so I said

I had to talk to my parents about this,” recalls Ortiz. “I called my mom and dad and they said, ‘We’re going to pray about it.’” Her parents soon after adopted Cyndi, who has now officially been part of the family for nearly 30 years. Asked if her experiences in Micronesia led her in changing her career path, and Ortiz says no. “I was just trying to find my ➝ 6

Hollister elementary schools along with siblings Madeline and Rob. She then attended boarding school at Monterey Bay Academy in Watsonville, where she was introduced to a strong work ethic, sometimes working up to 20 hours per week. “I had to work all the time in order to go to the school because we couldn’t afford it,” she says. “I did everything from milking cows to feeding the calves at the dairy

place, and [wanted to] make a difference and contribute in some way,” she says. “I knew I wasn’t going to be a social worker for a government entity...but I certainly knew there had to be ways to support my community that would allow me to be able to help build solutions to things. I was very blessed to have found this degree of social work.” After finishing undergraduate work at Pacific Union College to be closer to Cyndi, Ortiz got married, had children and sought that master’s degree—all while raising her daughters, who were less than five years old at the time. It was around this time that she also co-founded YA. In its humble beginnings, Ortiz’s driving force behind the organization was the lack of resources she found for youth of color in the community. “I was looking at young people who could have been my cousin, could have been somebody I grew up with,” she recalls. “These were all kids that I could recognize and I said, ‘Why don’t they have the same opportunities for enrichment,

for tutoring, for clubs, for sports, for activities? Why don’t they have the same access to them?’” Her father Joe says since the organization began almost 25 years ago, his daughter has sought the answers to these questions and— more importantly—sought solutions. “She’s done an excellent job,” he says. “And it’s not because I’m biased; it’s because of how it’s worked out. She made it more than what it started out to be.” According to its website, the Youth Alliance has now been the lead trainer and technical assistance provider to San Benito County schools since 2010. With plans to be the lead in providing technical assistance for restorative justice practices in south Santa Clara County schools, the YA has programs at 16 schools and neighborhoods in San Benito and South Santa Clara counties. Its services include after-school, summer, and late night prevention programs, early intervention bilingual counseling and case management, ➝ 15 among many others.

Limelight Theater explores family bonds in ‘The Velocity of Autumn’ By SUSAN L. RIFE

B

y turns comic, poignant and sad, Eric Coble’s The Velocity of Autumn at Limelight Actors Theater is a thought-provoking exploration of family bonds and the perils of aging. Alexandra is a vibrant, 80-yearold artist living in the family brownstone in Brooklyn one fall. Her children, concerned about her failing memory and fading physical strength, want to move her to a safer situation. She’s having none of it and has gone so far as to surround herself with Molotov cocktails and barricade the front door with crimescene tape and a pile of furniture.

But youngest son Chris, long estranged from the family, climbs up a tree and into her second-story living room to initiate a long negotiation with his mother in which revelations are shared on both sides. Alexandra considers herself a “cornered animal” and threatens to take dramatic action if her kids try to intervene. She’s suspicious of Chris’s motives, since he’s chosen to stay away for two decades, even skipping his father’s funeral. But it’s clear that he is the most like his mother, and maybe even her favorite, despite her description of him as the “cockamamie” one of the children and her revelation that he

was the slowest of her offspring to toilet-train. Rosalind Farotte makes the most of Alexandra’s frustration and sorrow at the insults of her aging body, thumping about the stage with a cane and railing against the physical limitations of eight decades on the planet. “Another part peels off, another body part falls to the floor,” she laments. Her frustration is real as she gropes for words she can no longer pull up from her memory, or loses her train of thought in mid-sentence. As Chris, Kevin Heath, who co-directed the play with JoAnna Evans, has an easy camaraderie with Farotte that somewhat belies Chris’s long absence from his mother’s life. He’s terrifically convincing as the play goes along and layers of guilt, resentment and misunderstanding are peeled away. It turns out that mother and son are on parallel journeys into the unknown, and eventually are able to reach a solution that will enhance their remaining time together. The play effectively captures the changing dynamics of a family whose matriarch is making the long, slow journey to the end of her life. Absent family members step up reinsert themselves into an established order with unpredictable results. It doesn’t make Alexandra’s aging any less onerous to her, but she regains a relationship with Chris that she had missed. And still she rages against the dying of the light. The theater’s simple set design for Alexandra’s living room is perhaps not as evocative of an artist’s life as it might be. She has stripped all her paintings from the walls, but her furnishings seem more like those of an old lady than a creative mind. ‘The Velocity of Autumn’ continues through Mar. 23 at Limelight Actors Theater, Gilroy Center for the Arts, 7341 Monterey St, Gilroy. California Passport Tours Partners with Valley of the Heart’s Delight By LAURA NESS

O

ne of the best ways to experience The Santa Clara Valley Wine Trail is with Ana Lelescu’s California Passport Tours, a concierge-style agri-tourism company serving Gilroy and Morgan Hill. The company specializes in custom food and wine tasting, farm and outdoor tours. Everything you need as a full-service event planner is available, from transportation to itinerary planning and restaurant reservations. Ana is offering a special discount to Passport holders on her popular tour, Taste of Italy on The Santa Clara Wine Trail, which

is offered Monday through Friday, through the month of March. Taste of Italy includes visits to four wineries offering Italian style wine, complete with an authentic Sicilian picnic lunch. Delight in Italian-inspired wines of the Santa Clara Valley on this 5-hour wine tasting tour, including transportation. Price is $149/person, and for Spring Passport month, a $50 discount is being offered for Passport holders. A minimum of four people is required to book the tour. Included in the price: picnic lunch, wine tasting fees, bottled water and all taxes and parking fees.

Reservations are required at least 3 days in advance of the tour date. Departure/return locations include: Downtown Morgan Hill, Downtown Gilroy, Eagle Ridge Golf Club and Hotel pickup and drop-off (Morgan Hill and Gilroy only). Lelescu also offers Passport holders a 15 percent discount on custom tours booked and conducted for March, 2019. Take her up on the motto inscribed on her vans: “Drive Less, Discover More.” In related news, Lelescu has teamed up with Mike Monroe, local history buff and writer of "Take a hike...with Mike Monroe," for MH Life newspaper, to focus on guided tours of South County’s amazing agriculture scene. Monroe often handles the smaller groups Lelescu books, when taking her large 14-person van is not practical. Monroe provides a supporting role, along with the value-add of deep historical knowledge of the region. With a mix of wine tasting, museum visits, antiquing, hiking and other fun activities, like visiting seasonal u-pick farms (Andy’s Orchard is a favorite), the tours offer an in-depth, behind-thescenes look into the history and beauty of the Santa Clara Valley. Gilroy residents since 1986, Monroe and his wife, Erin, formed The Valley of Heart's Delight, Inc. in 2009. They operated a natural food store in Morgan Hill called People and Planet, which they sold in 2018. Monroe had the pleasure of living in Concord, MA, as a youngster. “It put the buzz on my brain for history!” he says. He later fell in love with South County, and lives in Gilroy, which explains his focus. “My emphasis is to offer our clients a more robust introduction to South County both in terms of history and our farming and winemaking heritage. One of the sites I enjoy sharing with people is the Native American site on Watsonville Road. I like giving people the back stories.” He offers custom tours daily.

It’s a testament to Ortiz’s hard work all these years, and to what the YA strives to do for the children it reaches. “Our whole goal really is about helping young people not only discover their brilliance and their power, but also to challenge the stereotypes we have about young people and especially kids of color,” says Ortiz. Contact Youth Alliance at 310 Fourth St, Suite 101 in Hollister or at 7500 Monterey Rd in Gilroy. Visit www.youthall.org or call 831.636.2853/408.840.3685 for more information.

YA board chairman Jonathan Gonzalez says Ortiz’s “passion, ambition and vision for youth is unquestionable.” And though she strives to create solutions for at-risk youth, Gonzalez says Ortiz also has a knack for finding employees and volunteers. “Her talent in seeking out the right people for the job is key. Youth Alliance is what it is because of the staff and team.” He says some former youth beneficiaries of the program have even grown up to become employees of the Youth Alliance. “They tell us about the line they were treading and where they are now. It’s full circle,” Gonzalez says.

Tips to keep mom and dad in a good groove By CHERYL HUGUENOR

H

ere at Live Oak Adult Day Services, caregivers often ask staff for ideas about activities to do with their elders when our center is closed on weekends. Especially if the seniors have dementia or physical limitations, it can be a struggle to keep them occupied. I think that some of our suggestions may be of help to other families in the same situation. Looking through photo albums is a wonderful activity for the

senior and caregiver, or just the senior. If there are no photo albums in the house, gather old photos and ask Mom or Dad to put them in albums. Can they identify the people in the photos? For another walk down memory lane, you might use a device that has headphones (more comfortable for seniors than earbuds) and download a good number of songs from their high school years. Those are the songs that stick in one’s memory the longest. If you have an old cassette recorder

around, ask them to tell some of the family stories. You may have heard them many times, but they will enjoy the process of recording and playing them back. If the senior is able to ambulate a short distance or use a wheelchair, go to the mall and get a free makeover, or visit a salon and get an inexpensive manicure. Touch is soothing, and the outing can tire the senior just enough to ensure a good night’s sleep. Taking a Sunday drive was once a regular family activity, so try a drive to a park or lake and just enjoy the sights. Check out the Gilroy Demonstration Garden or take a garden tour. Show some YouTube videos of babies and kids doing silly things, and cute baby animals. Also find old shows your relative might remember, like Milton Berle, Jack Benny, or Ed Sullivan. TV shows with complicated plots might not hold their attention anymore, but old movie musicals can do the trick, such as The Wizard of Oz or Oklahoma. Before they sit down to watch, make a pan of brownies together with a simple box mix; they even come in sugar-free versions now. If the senior is especially anxious or wanders, try gathering all your old clothes and towels and ask them to fold them. Folding clothes is a familiar task. When they finish, “put them away” and bring them right back, unfolded, as a “new” load that needs attention. Also try pulling out your junk drawer and ask them to organize it by putting all the rubber bands in a bag, sorting buttons, checking if the pens still have ink. If they like the activity, undo their work and ask them to do it again a week later. Hopefully these ideas will be of help to caregivers and seniors alike. Cheryl Huguenor is the program director of Live Oak Adult Day Services in Gilroy. For more information, visit liveoakadultdaycare.org.
