he students at Enterprise Academy of Martial Arts have just finished learning a valuable lesson.

But it’s not something that can be learned from a martial arts handbook.

“We just did a really massive school supply drive,” says Enterprise Academy owner and instructor Mark Preader.

“Our members donated a huge amount.

We had two tables full here, and I offered a pizza party for the class who brought the most.”

Preader’s academy often gives back to the Hollister community, a task he says ➝6 his students love to rise up to.

“The students really love doing community service and giving back any way they can,” he says.

It’s important, Preader adds, in order to understand martial arts is not just about punching and kicking. “It’s about giving value and being the best person you can be.”

Enterprise Academy of Martial Arts, founded by Preader, has been a fixture in Hollister since 2006.

Initially affiliated with West Coast World Martial Arts, Preader made the decision to break away from the West Coast franchise in 2014.

“We change; we evolve,” he says of his decision to open his own studio.

Preader’s 2,800-square-foot facility accommodates 125 students, ages 3-58. His academy teaches mixed martial arts such as tae kwon do, kickboxing, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, eskrima, arnis and kali.

Students 3-12 years old are given age-specific training, focusing on their physical, emotional, intellectual and social growth.

Students can take its black belt training programs, and can also take advantage of its adaptive and special-needs martial arts. The academy is the only studio on the central coast authorized to teach Bruce Lee’s Jeet Kune Do. Preader, a Morgan Hill native (now residing in Hollister with wife Mellie and children Claire and Jack), began his training in Morgan Hill in 1992, and began managing a martial arts school in Cupertino in 2001, where he stayed for three years. “Those three years gave me a chance to really hone my managerial skills and all facets of running the school,” he says.

Now owner of the academy in Hollister, Preader often leads by example by often giving back to the community.

For instance, Preader does charity work with Heroes 4 Hope. Suiting up as Batman, he visits children in hospitals, and shares a message of strength and hope.

W

hen I am planning activities for the seniors here at Live Oak Adult Day Services, I get a kick out of going “outside the box.” The obvious celebrations like Halloween, Valentine’s Day and Thanksgiving definitely get plenty of time and attention, but there are so many other special days that are less obvious.

Did you know, for example, that June is Bathroom Reading Month? When we were little, my brother used to take a dictionary into the bathroom with him

and yell out definitions of words that he thought were disgusting.

Attempting a bit more gentility at Live Oak, we commemorate such a so-called special month by posting trivia questions or daily affirmations to while away the time in the restroom. We had a great time last fall on National Moustache Day, when our exercise teacher, Karen, brought in fake moustaches for everyone to wear. I must say that some of the ladies looked especially dashing.

Oct. 3 was All Hail to Kale Day, which I would be more inclined to celebrate if kale tasted more

like chocolate. But Oct. 17 is Wear Something Gaudy Day, which sounds much more appetizing.

The senior who showed up here one day wearing a red velvet evening gown over her pajamas was apparently a bit early. I also love the fact that Nov. 1-2, Day of the Dead, coincides with Men Make Dinner Day. It almost makes you want to find an excuse to avoid eating dinner that day.

Nov. 18 is Mickey Mouse’s birthday, and November 24 is Brunette Pride Day, so I assume we’ll be wearing brunette wigs under our mouse ears. What is the point of all this silliness? Actually, silliness is the point. Times are hard for many families. I see the tiredness on the faces of the caregivers who bring their older parents here. I see the anxious faces of seniors who are confused or shy. A warm, welcoming start to the day relieves each person. The tension melts as the day proceeds. In between exercise and meals, music and pet visits, it is such a relief sometimes to be just plain silly.

Caregivers can do this at home, too. When you are the most exhausted is when you need to laugh. Read the comics page together each day. Watch a YouTube video of babies laughing, and I guarantee that the cuteness factor is just as enjoyable as the infectious giggles. Ask your parent about their funniest experiences: Did they get into trouble in school for playing a prank, or blurt out something embarrassing in front of the minister? And look for the absurd in everyday life. The funny bumper sticker, the clever saying on a teenager’s T-shirt, all can bring smiles and laughs that relax the muscles, erase a stressful frown, and embrace the lighter side of life.

the community and developing a sense of belonging.

It’s an honor Preader doesn’t take full credit for.

“I believe without students, an instructor is just a person in an empty room,” he says. “Whatever I get awards for, it’s because the students make it possible for me to do that.”

But Enterprise parent and student Paolo Benedetti holds Preader in high regard.

“He isn’t just a strict business owner who is in it for the profit,” Benedetti says. “He’s in it for the long haul and really cares about the kids, the sense of community, and the sense of belonging.”

Camille Woida, whose daughter has been a student for five years, agrees.

“Mark makes everyone feel welcome,” Woida says. “He has a passion for what he does, continually learning himself, and it shows every day.”

And an advocate for anti-bullying, Preader has spent the past four years visiting local schools during the month of October—National Bully Awareness Month—to educate students on what bullying is and what to do when confronted with it.

It’s something he also teaches to his students.Kathleen Diekmann’s son is also an academy student, and she has taken its self-defense classes.

Diekmann says her son has learned to defend himself if necessary, “but more importantly, he has found his voice.”

“He has gained self-confidence and is no longer dealing with bullies,” Diekmann says. “Mark is very clear that the best approach is to walk away, but if a situation becomes physical, he teaches the kids how to protect themselves.
