S

ome people have a knack for making the best of a tough situation. Steve and Mary Chase have proven that twice.

“And so we became the Tourist Hat Gang.”

Their newfound hats, as well as new family nickname, would later prove useful.

Around the time of that vacation, Steve left a computer programming job at Pacific Metrics, a Monterey education technology company he co-founded in 2000 and then sold in 2014. He then decided to start a brand new company, and fell back on his hobby of roasting his own coffee.

“I started giving that coffee away to friends and family, and that’s how it started,” Steve explains.

“People kept coming back for more coffee, and I thought, ➝ 6

While vacationing with their children two years ago in South Dakota, they found themselves in a heated situation.

“We drove out to Mount Rushmore and when we got there, none of us had hats, and it was really sunny,” Steve says.

So they decided to spare the heat and save their skin, and found the nearest gift shop.

“We all bought, basically, tourist hats,” Steve laughs.

“Every time we took selfies to put on Facebook for our family to follow, we were the tourist hat gang,” he says, recalling how their friends would check in to see where the gang visited next.

RETURN CLIENTS Originally a hobbyist coffee roaster, Steve Chase began giving coffee away to friends and family.

‘Hey, I’ve got something here.’ I went out and bought a 2-pound drum roaster, and then started roasting more coffee.”

And in July of this year, the Chases celebrated one year of producing and selling their own coffee under the became Tourist Hat Coffee brand.

But the Chases were wearing different hats before starting their coffee company.

After meeting at CSU Chico, the couple married soon after graduation and started a family in Hollister in 1990. Their five children are all now young adults.

Mary donned the stay-at-homemom hat for 20 years before becoming an instructional assistant for Hollister School District—a job she still has.

And Steve donned the computer programming hat from the time he was out of college.

The couple became parent volunteers for such youth activities as Boy And Girl Scouts, band boosters, PTOs and school and community theater.

They also saw the monetary needs of some of these youth organizations, as well as global non-profit

organizations, and the Chases once again decided they could make the best out of tough situations.

“The company was created to give back,” Steve says about Tourist Hat Coffee Company.

“It’s not just for us to make a ton of money and retire and stuff like that. It was really important for us to be able to give back to the community and so forth.”

To that end, a dollar from every 14-ounce bag of Tourist Hat Coffee sold goes to Seeds of Hope in Costa Rica, a nonprofit organization that helps prevent the exploitation of women involved in human trafficking, drug addiction, alcoholism, violence and/or at risk of dropping out of school.

It was an organization that touched the Chases’ hearts after the family went to Costa Rica on a mission trip to help build a clubhouse.

“They teach them how to read and write English,” Mary explains.

“They offer classes to learn a trade…. so they didn’t have to sell drugs or sell themselves.”

Steve says they hope to expand their charity to non-profits here in Hollister this year.

Exception views of nature at Mount Harkness

O

ne in eight Americans call California home, making it more and more difficult to find solitude in one of our national parks. In 2017, over four million people visited Yosemite; Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks eclipsed two million visitors for the first time. But a bit farther north, at the southern end of the Cascade Range, Lassen Volcanic National Park is an outdoor playground that attracts a small fraction of the visitors that pour into Yosemite.

As the park’s name suggests, volcanic activity is the headline attraction. Lassen Peak began a series of eruptions in May 1914 that culminated in a major eruption on May 22, 1915, sending a column of ash 30,000 feet into the air. Though it has been more than a hundred years since that activity, steaming fumaroles, bubbling mud pots, and roiling hot springs confirm that things are still simmering just below the surface.

Most visitors to Lassen travel through on State Route 89, the

30-mile paved road that bisects the park. Off the main drag, a bit of solitude and a unique experience wait atop a peak tucked in a quiet corner of the park.

The day before our recent challenge hike up Brokeoff Mountain in Lassen, a small group of us went on a bucket-list day hike up Mount Harkness. The trailhead is at Juniper Lake in the southeast corner of the park, a location that not accessible from the main road through the park. Miles from the park entrance, on the north shore of Lake Almanor, is the town of Chester. At the east end of town, we turned north on Feather River Drive, making sure, a half mile ahead, to go right at the fork onto Chester Juniper Lake Road. It is another 11 miles to the trailhead.

While the road is passable for any vehicle, it steadily deteriorates from paved to dirt to bumpy dirt.

If you are going to a mountaintop, the nature of the job ahead is clear. There is a lot of “up” ahead.

But a “wow” moment invariably follows the “up” effort, and Mount Harkness is no exception. Most of the 2-mile climb from the trailhead (6,800 feet) to the summit (8,048 feet) is through an open red fir forest, but near the top the trail pops above treeline and traverses a vast open slope washed blue with a breathtaking carpet of silver leaf lupine. If you can manage to look up from the flowers, you will see miles of countryside rolling north to Lassen Peak and beyond.

Dave, who staffs the fire lookout at the summit, greeted us like old friends. Inside the lookout, he shared some of the challenges of life on a mountaintop: looking for fires, receiving supplies, dealing with thunder and lightning. Dave has all he needs at the top of Mount Harkness: a stunning setting, regular visitors, his guitar, and a radio to follow the Oakland A's. See for yourself. Dave has it pretty good.

Mary says when people sample their product, she encourages them to take it black.

“And then they’ll try it and say, ‘Oh, that’s pretty good; that may not even need any cream or sugar in it,’” she adds.

Tourist Hat customer Ron Firstbrook has had the opportunity to try various beans from different origins, Honduras being his favorite.

“The coffee has consistently been great,” he says.

He also appreciates that his money is going toward worthy causes, as well as the company’s fair trade suppliers.

“When Steve and Mary purchase coffee from suppliers who are seeking to advance socially and economically, we see dual entrepreneurship happening.”

The Chases hope by the end of the year, they can purchase that commercial kitchen they want.

“I want to make sure I can keep up with the demand once we get, hopefully, into the Safeways and stuff like that,” Steve says.

“The essence of what we’re trying to do is to give back; it’s to help.”

the youth,” he says. “We know how hard it is for a lot of these nonprofits to make money and to get money. If there was some way there could do a constant fundraiser in supporting youth somehow, then we could start putting those proceeds over to that non-profit. That’s the goal—as we get bigger and bigger—to help those non-profits out.”

For the time being, the company, which is currently a cottage food organization (meaning they work out of their home), is searching for a commercial kitchen to house their 2-pound roaster.

“To have the roaster, I have to be in a commercial kitchen,” Steve explains. “Once we get that roaster in place, in a commercial kitchen, I really do think our growth is really going to go fast.”

And the faster productivity won’t go unnoticed.

Steve and Mary work hard at roasting and bagging the coffee on their own, says the Chases’s son, Nathan, “sometimes putting in a full day’s work many days a week.”

Nathan says the quality of care his parents put into their product is rare.

“My dad enjoys finding the balance between the different beans and their time in the roaster, giving the beans their different level of roasts (light, medium, dark).”

It’s this kind of quality that customers can taste—and appreciate.

ot only do many people mistakenly believe that Medicare covers all nursing home care, but they also tend to view nursing homes as the only option available when the care of an older family member has become too difficult to manage at home. There are actually many other levels of care to consider for the older individual.

If the senior is living at home or with relatives and is experiencing health and memory issues that require supervision while the family is at work or needing respite, adult day care or adult day health care centers can be a valuable

service. Meals, activities, assistance with medications, and safe supervision are often just what the family needs to maintain a manageable daily routine. Your nearest senior center can direct you to an adult day care center in your area.

If the older relative is unable to attend such a center for a variety of reasons, in-home care may be helpful. There are literally dozens of home care agencies in the area, all of which provide companion services, meal preparation, assistance with bathing and grooming, laundry and more. If the senior is low-income or a veteran, he or she may qualify for free or lowcost services. Again, check with the

senior center, or call Sourcewise at 408.350.3200 for free assistance linking to such services.

Remaining at home, with either adult day care or in-home care, is sometimes no longer possible.

The senior relative may wander too extensively, or have behavioral/ health issues that require a living situation outside of the home. In this situation the family can investigate residential care homes and assisted living centers. Residential care homes are houses in the neighborhood that are staffed to care for several seniors. Because it is an actual home, there is no sense of being in a hospital or nursing home environment.

Assisted living centers are usually large facilities with individual apartments for residents, a main dining room, activity areas, and transportation for doctor appointments and social outings. Some have either a nursing facility on the premises or a nurse available for residents’ health needs. Fees are based on the level of care needed, ranging from simply housing and meals to assistance with dressing, bathing and medication reminders. There are many assisted living centers throughout the area, all of which welcome visitors and provide tours.

Nursing homes, usually referred to as skilled nursing facilities, are needed by individuals with complex medical needs, such as daily physical therapy and dialysis, and for those who are at a stage of needing assistance with daily tasks of living and will not improve or regain independence.
