Hollister’s Becky Herbert has one simple mission: to get fresh, wholesome food to as many people in the Bay Area as possible

he has always aspired to be a writer. And since irony is an essential part of the writer’s toolbox, there’s no way that Becky Herbert would not savor the central ironies of her own life.

The entrepreneur who stands at the center of Hollister’s farmto-table organic agriculture movement grew up on the farm, but once ran away to Boston to pursue her literary ambitions.

The woman who is as deeply rooted in Hollister as a person could be, going back five generations, maintains an ardent love and strong emotional ties to San Francisco, where she lived for years.

Becky Herbert, the chef who

runs the kitchen at Hollister’s Farmhouse Café and specializes in tasty but health-enhancing soups, once was a terror in the kitchen.

“I was notorious for burning things,” remembered Herbert of her teen years growing up with her farmer parents and three sisters. “I was the one in the house who could not cook. I was made fun of.”

These days, no one is making fun of her, at least in the realm of food. She has built a mini-agricultural empire with her company Eat With the Seasons, known as a “Community Supported Agriculture” program, or CSA, which now serves a giant chunk of the greater Bay Area, including Oakland, San Jose and San Francisco from its home base in San Benito County. The Farmhouse Café, which opened on San Benito

Street in Hollister in 2016, is an offshoot of Eat With the Seasons, a kind of public interface with the fresh organic food that Herbert sells through her CSA. And if all that weren’t enough, one conversation with the affable Herbert might have you thinking that she somehow has more hours in the day than the rest of us. On top of distributing raw vegetables from local and regional farmers to her customers throughout the Bay Area (the company claims to be the first customizable CSA in the country), she’s also delivering prepared foods—salads, soups and salsas—and is nursing ambitions to get into the meal-kit delivery business, going up against prominent startups like Sun Basket and Blue Apron, taking advantage of her local orientation to deliver fresher food. ➝ 15

Opening of new trail in La Honda Creek Open Space Preserve offers visual treats in a moderate hike

T

he southern portion of Skyline Boulevard twists and rolls along the crest of the peninsula hills alternating stunning views of the Pacific with full length Bay views that sweep from Mt. Tamalpais to Mt. Hamilton. I think of this road as a thread generously strung with outdoor pearls—Midpen preserves, county parks, and state parks—inviting us to get out and look closer.

La Honda Creek Open Space Preserve is among the most lustrous of those pearls. Until recently, only a small portion of the 6,100acre preserve was open to the

public. Last November, the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District opened the lower portion of the preserve, a larger and more open property with sweeping distant views. Or so I heard. Time to verify the rumors.

California State Route 84 climbs the peninsula hills as Woodside Road, then at Skyline Boulevard it changes to La Honda Road and begins its descent to the coast.

Six miles down La Honda Road, a friend and I reached the sleepy berg for which the road is named.

Directly across the street from the storied roadhouse, Apple Jack's Inn, we turned onto Sears Ranch

Road, which rose a half mile to the La Honda Creek OSP parking area.

Much of the ride down from Skyline was through a dark forest of Douglas firs and redwoods, but we stepped from the car into wide open landscape of spring-green grassy slopes where most shade trees had retreated into the mountain's moist folds.

Fences, cattle ponds, barns and other out buildings, and of course grazing cattle at La Honda OSP tell this land's ranching history that continues today. Over the first mile, we walked up a gentle ranch road to a low divide. From there, we looked across a vast two-mile wide bowl, virtually the entire landscape our route would traverse. At the far end, we could trace our path as it rose to the top of a huge round hill that we hoped would reveal special views.

The first half of our walk across the bowl dropped steadily to Harrington Creek, where we began the climb to our target hill. Clumps of coyote brush dotted the grassy slopes. Tucked into the hill's wet creases, madrone, coast live oak, buckeye, and an occasional Douglas fir found comfortable homes.

The hilltop view was all we hoped for and more. Wide ocean views reached from the San Gregorio Beach breakers beneath us to the horizon. Toward every compass point, the Santa Cruz Mountains showed crisp, clear, and beautiful. I can think of no finer spot for a well-earned peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

While ongoing ranching activities serve an important purpose on these hills, they have left their mark. Widespread milk thistle, close cropped and trampled slopes, and an almost complete lack of wildflowers give the land a worn and tattered look. When you go, don't look down, look up. It's the amazing views that make this moderate 6.5-mile hike well worth the drive.

FRESH AND HEALTHY Fresh greens and soups are great starters.

By its name, Eat With the Seasons communicates a distinct food philosophy, an idea so fundamental that until a couple of generations ago it was too obvious to even articulate: It’s best to eat food that’s currently in season and is grown close by. That means that in one of Herbert’s deliveries you’re not going to find tomatoes in February or mangos, well, ever.

“Seasonal eating is the easiest way to have a healthy life,” said Herbert, who is also a vegetarian—although her CSA sells a variety of grain-fed beef, pastured chicken and pork and sustainably caught seafood.

The Herbert family line goes back almost 150 years in Hollister when Irish-born farmer James Hudner— that’s Becky Herbert’s grandfather’s grandfather—bought a tract of farmland from real-estate entrepreneur Col. William W. Hollister, the man after whom the city is named. That same piece of land has been farmed by the Herbert family ever since, most recently by her father Pat Herbert, who inherited the farm with his brother Phil in the late 1960s, and a couple of decades later made the transition from a conventional farm to an organic farm. Then, in 2000, Pat and his wife Patti initiated the CSA program, delivering boxes of fresh produce to subscribers.

“It did surprise us,” said Pat Herbert, who is still farming at 72. “She came back to us to help us sell our vegetables and pretty soon took over the CSA and built it into what it is today.”

Eat With the Seasons was built on those first delivery routes in downtown San Francisco. Becky admits, even though she moved to Hollister full-time four years ago, a part of her never really left San Francisco. Her signature dish at the Café, in fact, was born in San Francisco. “In the summer, it was always so foggy and cold, so I made a lot of soups, and that’s what my customers buy a lot of today.”

The stakes got even higher when Pat Herbert was struck with severe heart disease that almost killed him.

After a lifetime of eating meat, he immediately went vegetarian and has largely reversed his coronary disease.

“When you’re lying on the table and the doctor asks if you had a near-death experience, that kind of wakes you up,” he said. “It gives you an incentive to think about something different.”

Not long after that, Becky herself had a sobering health scare when she was diagnosed with cancer. She had, in fact, sold the business at that point and when her cancer went into remission, she bought back the company. With her experience and her dad’s, selling fresh organic food to as many people as possible has transformed an occupation into a mission.

“I feel like I’m more determined now,” she said. “I find it more

“I remember one day, my dad came home for lunch and I begged him to let me go to work,” she said. “I made a dollar an hour. What kind of 9-yearold does that?”

The infatuation with farming didn’t last, however. Before long, Herbert was looking to become a writer, and in fact landed a newspaper column with the Hollister Free Lance while still in high school.

After graduation, it was off to Emerson College in Boston. It was there, she said, that she did some of her best writing. But “I didn’t fit in, definitely a fish out of water.” So, homesick for California, she enrolled in San Francisco State.

Eventually, Herbert got a job at Chronicle Books in San Francisco, and it was while there that she started a side business delivering food from her family’s CSA to her co-workers and other young professionals working at places like the Museum of Modern Art and the Sierra Club. That was the pivot point in her life, the moment when the career in publishing gave way to the opportunity to re-engage with the family business.

“I never thought I would end up doing this,” she said one afternoon shortly before closing at the Farmhouse Café. “When I first started working for my dad, it was supposed to be a three-month temporary thing, help him promote the CSA. But I ended up having so much fun with him.”

As Hollister has changed demographically, and as more and more people commute to Silicon Valley and San Francisco, Eat With the Seasons has looked to cater to a growing professional class of people aware of the need to eat more healthy food, but who don’t always have the time to shop for or prepare it. She’s now working, she said, seven days a week, but still planning on expanding her prepared-food line. And then there’s always that meal-kit market that she is convinced could use a shot of localism.

“It’s the right thing to do,” she said of her seasonal, organic philosophy.

“It’s the healthy thing to do. It’s the freshest food you can get. If you don’t buy stuff that’s local, you don’t know when it was harvested. Once plants are cut, they start dying. You take something right out of the field and make a salad with it, you’re going to get the highest nutritional value from it that you can.”

And when she’s not running a big company and managing a new restaurant, well, there’s always writing to turn back to. “I still want to do it,” she said. “I have some characters in my head that I have to put down on paper one of these days.”
