A season for sharing Local family makes good for animal shelter

F

ew kids think of anything but toys during the holiday season—most are creating lists, dog-earing the pages of toy catalogs, or drawing circles around their favorite toys in catalogs and store ads.

They covet the latest gadgets, the newest gaming consoles, and the limited edition dolls.

In the midst of these desires, though, the spirit of the holiday season may become lost from what it’s truly meant to be: the season for giving.

So when a young girl says she wants to give some of her Christmas money to a local charity—it’s the kind of gesture that doesn’t go unnoticed. It inspires one to take action.

And that’s exactly what Hollister resident Dan Brughelli did when his daughter, Mia, wanted to give a portion of her Christmas money to charity three years ago. It has since become an annual tradition for the now 10-year old who chose to donate to breast cancer research last year. ➝ 6

CHARITABLE MATCHING Each year Dan and Kristen Brughelli’s daughter Mia donates a portion of her Christmas money to a good cause.

When Mia decided to donate to the Hollister Animal Shelter this year, Dan and his wife, Kristen, felt it was a great choice and investigated the shelter’s to learn its greatest need.

Dan brought the idea to his friend, Hollister Police Chief David Westrick.

“Chief said, ‘Well, they always need food but they also take donations for low cost spay/neuter procedure for people who can’t afford it as well as money to buy microchips,” Brughelli recalls.

And then Westrick challenged Brughelli to do even more: he suggested that Brughelli’s business, Brughelli Electric, also make a donation and challenge all the businesses in San Benito County to match or exceed it.

“I suggested that they do what I try to do, and that’s to motivate folks to help the community become a better place,” Westrick says.

A sentiment close to the Brughellis’ heart.

Westrick assisted in getting Brughelli in touch with the shelter’s supervisor, Kara Newman, and in setting up the Donation Challenge.

After contacting Newman, Brughelli learned the shelter mainly feeds its animals with food from Rancher’s Feed, located in Hollister. After a trip to Rancher’s Feed, and a supplemental one to Target, the Brughellis arrived at the Hollister Animal Shelter with 494 lbs of dry food and 180 cans of wet food.

And their donation didn’t stop there.

They learned that low cost spay/ neuter procedures run between $60 and $100, and a box of 15 microchips cost $250.

“We decided $1000 was a good round number for these procedures,” Brughelli says.

And now, with Westrick’s help, Brughelli is challenging other businesses to match or exceed his donations to the Hollister Animal Shelter.

“This is a winning situation for the animals,” he says.

“They benefit from our competitive nature. It’s making progress with many people accepting the challenge as private citizens and donating what they can. Every little bit helps.”

Brughelli Electric and the Brughelli family plan on continuing this donation challenge as a yearly tradition.

“We have been blessed in having a successful business and enjoy giving back to our community,” Brughelli says.

“We launched a Facebook campaign/challenge and pushed it through as many local pages we could think of,” Brughelli says.

“We also tagged friends of ours who own local businesses. Everyone loves a good challenge and the opportunity to ‘one-up’ their friends.”

Brughelli says that Christi Turner, owner of Cold Storage CrossFit in Hollister, was the first local business to accept the challenge.

“Challenge accepted,” Turner commented on the Brughelli Electric Facebook page.

“We are collecting donation items for the animal shelter at the gym this holiday season,” she added.

The GardenMart also proposed a collaboration with Brughelli Electric - a “Stuff the Dog House” event. Brughelli explains this event, which is still in the works, as one where people can stuff a large

San Benito Dance Academy presents 10th annual ‘The Nutcracker’

A

black-tie affair on Christmas Eve, booming with presents, children, a magician—a young girl enamored with a wooden nutcracker.

The famous ballet based on the century-old story The Nutcracker, has become an annual tradition for San Benito Dance Academy (SBDA).

Yet it is a bittersweet celebration.

“This is our 10th annual year, and this is my last year,” says SBDA founder and owner, Kim Lavagnino, who has been directing the theatrical ballet since the beginning.

“It’s a good thing,” Lavagnino adds. “But it’s very emotional for me.”

Lara Lichten, who is currently the assistant director for SBDA, will become the new owner and

director of the Dance Academy in January.

“I am extremely excited in anticipation of becoming owner/director,” says Lichten, who has instructed with the Dance Academy since 2013.

Lichten is also excited about the upcoming Nutcracker performances.

“It’s a big anniversary celebration and opportunity to honor Kim, and give her a big send-off into the next chapter of her life,” Lichten says.

Those behind the scenes and on stage have been working hard to send Lavagnino off with their best performance yet.

The cast of roughly 175, features Xochitl Azcona and Katelyn Vass (sharing the role of Clara) and Cam Burchard as the Nutcracker.

It is directed by Lavagnino and

choreographed by Lavagnino, Lichten, and instructors Stephanie Hicks and Emma Tomasini.

Paula Azcona is the costumer and bookkeeper, Alissa Vass assists with the production.

“I would say 99 percent of this cast are students,” says Lavagnino.

Out of the large cast, about 70 of them are what Lavagnino lovingly refers to as “little people”—children age 6 and younger. But many cast in the show are parents of students and boys who have previously danced in past performances.

Lavagnino assures that there is something for everyone. For instance, the physical humor she places in the show is a hit with the younger male audience.

“For the little boys, that keeps them hooked in—and for everyone really,” she says.

Aside from the comic relief, the caliber of talent in the older dancers will thrill those who enjoy professional ballets.

“We have several pre-professional ballerinas who have been trained at our studio, and they bring a lot of expertise and technical know-how to the traditional ballet,” Lichten says.

Lavagnino says that she raised the age requirement for some of the dance numbers, too. Therefore, audience-goers who have seen SBDA’s previous performances may notice a difference in the dances.

“We’ve been able to make the choreography more difficult, which just makes for a better dance,” she says.

Lavagnino has enjoyed watching every one of these dances.

“I said to myself when I knew it was going to be my last show, ‘I’m going to enjoy every moment of this and just soak it all up, because it’s just so fulfilling and so gratifying,’” says Lavagnino.

The Nutcracker will be performed at Sherwood Hall, 940 N. Main Street in Salinas, at 1pm and 6pm on Friday, Dec. 22 and Saturday, Dec. 23.

elcome once again to my annual Memories of a Nursery Child.

One never thinks of their parents as being on the cutting edge, at least until a little maturity emerges. But as I think back to the Carman’s Nursery of my childhood, there was an interesting mix of old fashioned and forward-looking.

In my memory, the nursery facilities and techniques were all fairly basic and low-tech. The greenhouse vent was operated by hand, pulled by a chain connected to the gear near the roof. The cash register was purchased second-hand from the Campbell Lumber Company in the 1950s.

Each sale had to be hand-written on

a roll of paper that was advanced by the pull of a lever. Watering was done by hand until the nursery moved to Mozart Avenue in the 1970s and we finally got overhead misters and sprinklers, which simplified watering in several areas. As unsophisticated as some of the methods may have been, they were practical and worked. For instance, soil was mixed in a cement mixer. Several shovels each, in turn, of redwood sawdust, sand and topsoil were added to the rotating cement mixer. This method was used for over forty years, and worked perfectly fine for a small nursery.

Tried and true methods may have been good enough for nursery operations, but when it came to plants, only something new and

exciting was able to feed my dad, Ed Carman’s passion for plants.

In 1969, a group of New Zealand nursery owners traveled to California and toured the state.

Dad belonged to the California Nurserymen’s Association, the group that organized and hosted the tour.

I believe this was when Dad started reaching out to plantspeople around the world, looking for wonderful new plants to bring and introduce to California. The connections to New Zealand were particularly rewarding as far as suitable plant material, since the climate areas there are very similar to those in California. While kiwi vines (Actinicia deliciosa) had been in California since the 1940s, my dad imported some named varieties from New Zealand in the 1960s, nurtured them through the quarantine period and propagated them. The plants he offered for sale were the first available to the home gardener in the Santa Clara Valley. Rhodohypoxis, a bulb originally from South Africa, came to us in the 1980s via New Zealand as well. Now you can see these plants for sale in grocery stores. Dymondia margaretae, a hard-working, drought tolerant and beautiful ground cover from South Africa was introduced to California by my dad.

But Dad wasn’t the only Carman who loved new and unusual plants. Jean Carman, my mom, was interested in succulents long before their current popularity. She grew many varieties of sempervivums (hen & chicks), crassulas ( jade plants) and others like Christmas cactus and crown of thorns in the 1970s, over thirty years before the current rage began. Mom and Dad both inspired my love for unusual plants. Helping others learn about and grow plants successfully is how I honor my heritage.
