That’s the character of a veteran.

So it shouldn’t be surprising to see this kind of character displayed by members of the Hollister Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 9242.

HELP WANTED Hollister VFW Post 9242 is always looking for donation items and volunteers to help prepare care packages.

For the last two years, Post 9242 has been sending monthly care packages to soldiers. They are called “I Care Packages,” and it’s a program that started with Post 9242 member, Bernie Ramirez.

Ramirez began making the care packages when he served as commander of the post from 2013 to 2017. Many of these packages are sent to the active soldiers who have banners still hung in downtown Hollister (which was another idea that Ramirez brought to the city).

What began as a passion project in his home has grown into something bigger. Ramirez began by sending packages to the 82nd Airborne—a unit that includes his nephew, Elijah Cabrera.

“We started out here at my house with 10 packages,” he said. “We got some names of some soldiers who are deployed in Afghanistan and Iraq, and some even in the states.”

As months went by, Ramirez received more names and began sending care packages out every

two months. Once the number of packages reached 26, he realized he needed a bigger facility.

“My wife and I said, ‘Well, we can’t do it here anymore, so let’s go to the post,’ and so we did it there,” Ramirez said, referring to the Veteran’s Memorial Building.

And the number of care packages he and his wife have sent out has grown steadily. Ramirez said that two weeks ago they sent out 40 packages, their largest number so far.

On the Hollister VFW Post 9242 Facebook page, the types of items needed for the the care packages have been made known to the public, and Ramirez said the support that the community has given has been overwhelming.

“I have people dropping off stuff all the time,” he said. “They bring me stuff and they donate money to send. We always have enough to send them out. If we don’t have enough, we can always go buy it.”

The list varies from basic to “comfort” items.

“Jerky, sunflower seeds, Slim Jims. We send them Cup-a-Noodle Soups, any instant flavored drinks, gum, shaving creams, deodorant, especially the guys in Afghanistan.

If they’re in the field, sometimes they can take stuff with them,” he said.

Ramirez’s list also consists of snacks such as granola bars, Pop Tarts, instant oatmeal, oatmeal or sugar cookies, soup mixes, and trail mix (but nothing with chocolate, because it easily melts).

Toiletry items such as baby wipes, baby powder, feminine products and throat lozenges are appreciated, and items such as batteries, prepaid phone cards, DVD movies, video games, portable CD players/headphones and magazines provide comfort for those stationed away from home.

Ramirez said that although the list is endless, there are other ways that people can show they care.

Families of VFW Post 9242 have often filled the packages, and now those in the community who have

heard about this program are lending their support.

“We’re getting volunteers from schools and just people that want to come and help us,” Ramirez said.

He also said that there is always a volunteer who will sit down and write individual notes, just thanking these soldiers for their service and asking them to stay safe.

Because the cost of shipping the packages can be expensive—postage for each package is around $19—money donations are always needed. Ramirez said one post office worker always chips in a $100 donation.

He is appreciative of the support that the community has given, but he cautions the public to be aware of scams.

“We don’t go door to door,” he said.

“I’m the only contact person—I don’t send out anyone to collect money.”

The men and women who receive these packages are grateful and thank the VFW and the community. The 82nd Airborne has even sent Ramirez a picture of soldiers opening the packages.

“Most of them are kids that I don’t even know, but that doesn’t make any difference. They’re soldiers. For us veterans, it makes us feel good because we’re doing something,” he said.

He is planning another day in early December, possibly Dec. 1, to make more care packages, and welcomes people to drop off donations or items to him.

“If anybody wants to donate, they can get a hold of me and bring me items. We’ll keep doing it as often as we get a name,” he said.

Doing the banner program and the care packages, Ramirez says, fall into his personal mission: to treat today’s soldiers with the respect and appreciation that many Vietnam War veterans did not receive.

“We’re doing everything we can to make sure that never happens again,” he stressed. “Soldiers are never forgotten.”

9,500 feet. Emigrant Meadow Lake. Emigrant Wilderness.

It is late afternoon.

I lay tucked in my sleeping bag staring at the ceiling of my small one-person tent. Every two or three minutes, I slap the rainfly to remove snow collecting there. Six inches are on the ground, and it is still falling like crazy. When I think of the 10,000-foot pass and the 14 miles between me and my car, the longing is nearly unbearable. I don't want to be here.

I have backpacked for nearly 60 years. Throughout those years, I

have always bounded to my mountain destination, then dropped my pack, looked for a nearby peak, and said, “Let’s go up there!” Now, here I lay, listless and defeated; not just by the weather, but by the effort and the altitude as well. I wonder, am I just too old for this?

While my backpacking days may be winding down, I will always promote it with enthusiasm. Few activities in our modern world strip you so bare and leave you with nothing but your resourcefulness.

In our daily lives, when confronted with any emergency, no matter how difficult, expert and professional help is a cell phone

call away. Now, imagine an emergency—equipment failure, injury, foul weather—deep in the wilderness 20 miles from your car. Your safety valves are gone. It’s just you, the contents of your backpack, and your ingenuity to figure something out.

And you will. And when you return safe and sound, you will be a little surer and stand a little taller in everything you do.

The other incomparable gifts of wilderness travel are the jaw-dropping majesty and utter solitude awaiting there. No national park lookout can ever hope to match it.

The silence is complete, the solitude unnerving. Sitting alone in one of those high and wild places, you would understand. Only the most barren soul could miss the wonder in it.

Downcast and brooding in my snowbound tent, I was not thinking these high-minded thoughts.

The snowfall continued, but I could lie there no longer. I had to get out. Sliding, scooting, shuffling, I bumbled out, stood and looked at the transformed landscape for the first time.

Oh, my. Everything was soft and weightless like the inside of a cloud. No features, no detail.

The softening cloud cover acted like a thin veil casting the warm pinks and purples of sunset evenly across an otherwise cool misty scene. A prairie falcon sliced powerfully but nonchalantly through the falling snow, pulled up, and landed on a granite ledge. The distant honking of a flock of Canada geese grew steadily louder until the birds landed beside Emigrant Meadow Lake, knocked out of the sky by the storm.

How can a moment be so difficult and so magical?

The next morning, ill-equipped and feeling bad, I packed up and hiked alone the 14 snow-covered miles out, seeing no one else along the way.

Cherishing the commitments of America’s servicemen and women

he parades that run through downtown Hollister are like no other. They celebrate homecomings.

They celebrate rodeos and holiday seasons.

And they celebrate heroes.

On Saturday, Nov. 11, Hollister will host its 16th annual San Benito County Veterans Day Parade and Ceremonies to celebrate the men and women who served our country.

The parade is sponsored by the Hollister Veterans of Foreign War (VFW) Post 9242 and is co-chaired

by VFW commander George Nava and Frankie Gallagher.

Starting at 1:30pm, the parade will be the finale for Veterans Day activities.

This year, Hollister residents Lt. Colonel Richard Castro, a Korean War and Vietnam War Veteran, and longtime VFW Post 9242 Auxiliary President, Dolly DeVasier, will be honored as the grand marshals.

Spectators will enjoy watching patriotic floats, classic cars, equestrian units, school groups, scouting groups, emergency agencies, marching bands and much more.

The day’s events will begin with a breakfast hosted by the local chapter of the League of United

Latin American Citizens at 7am at the Hollister Community Center. The following events will take place at the Veterans Memorial Building. The Veterans Benefit Fair will be at 10am.

The banner presentations, hosted by Congressman Jimmy Panetta at 10:30am, will feature the installation of banners on the light post in the Veterans Memorial Building Plaza and along San Benito Street that honor individual local active duty military personnel. The banners will remain in place until the service member is discharged.

State Assemblymember Anna Caballero will be a speaker for the memorial ceremony and a participant in the parade.

At noon before the parade, the public is invited to a barbecue lunch at the Veterans Memorial Building. Lunch will include a tritip sandwich, beans, chips and a drink for $10. Veterans eat for free.

Gallagher, who has co-chaired the parade since 2007, is excited about this year’s parade and its new floats.

“We have an incredibly strong group from the VFW and the volunteers that come out here year after year,” said Gallagher.

The VFW Post 9242 invited any and all veterans to ride on its float in the parade.

Spectators will see an additional float made by the veterans post, which will commemorate the national Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

Gallagher said the evolution of the Veterans Day Parade and ceremony over the past 10 years has been phenomenal.

“I’m just honored to be co-chair of it and to be able to honor our veterans.”

e recently popped into The Grapevine, a new restaurant specializing in small plates, cheeses and wines. Valerie Evans, a former two-time Golden Gloves Champ for Northern California who sports a tattooed grapevine on her arm, previously owned The Grapevine in San Jose and has now opened a similar restaurant in Morgan Hill. With its hip urban décor reminiscent of a cannery, the restaurant has an open-beamed ceiling, stainless-steel metal chairs and modular leather-couch seating that extends outside to the patio.

The wine list includes everything from bubbly white to rosé and red— ordered in flights, by the glass or by the bottle. Local wines and international wines range from $9–$19 a glass or wine flights start at $12.

We ordered the Elizabeth Spencer

Sauvignon Blanc ($11), which was crisp and citrusy. We also enjoyed The Grapevine’s signature wine, “Valerie’s Cuvee” ($14) made by Comartin Cellars—a lovely Rhone blend of grenache, syrah and mourvedre.

Both wines paired well with the 3-Cheese Flight ($6) accompanied by grapes, guava paste and a sliced baguette. Other items include salads, hot-grilled sandwiches and dessert. And, the kid-friendly restaurant allows customers to bring in beer from its next door neighbor, Running Shoes and Hops.

Kathy and Scott Long, Morgan Hill residents for 25 years, said it best: “We are so excited because we have been waiting a long time for a good wineand-cheese shop like this to open.”

How did you find yourself in a real estate career?

I’ve always been a DIYer who grew up around investment properties, so it was something I thought about for number of years.I was working in tech and was burnt out on the Valley.

With young kids and busy careers, my wife and I decided one of us needed to make a change. Real estate allowed me to do that. It gave me a tremendous amount of flexibility and brought me into something I should have done 10 years earlier.

What is the best thing about this job?

This is about having a positive impact on people’s lives. Buying a home is a milestone—from a starter home for a young family to a move up home and then finally a retirement home—when people can stop and enjoy the fruits of their labor. It’s pretty rewarding.

What can your clients count on?

If you’re not providing a high level of service, you’re not going to

Buy and hold. If you can afford to do that, that’s the way to do it. That’s a great way to have secondary income. And being in the Bay Area where our appreciation rates are high, you can make it at both ends.

First you need to have a downpayment for the next house. They key is to make sure you’re in a cash flow neutral or cash flow positive situation. You don’t want to find yourself in a situation where you can’t continue to make that second payment if it becomes necessary.

What do you do in your spare time?

Whether it’s the downtown communities, the beach or the redwoods—there’s so much to do in South Valley, for me it’ts been great for the lifestyle.

I love the outdoors. I love to travel.

Number one on our bucket list was a trip to Machu Picchu and we’re trying to find something to top it. We’re thinking the Galapagos are next!
