A CORNY CLASSIC Swank Farms continues its Halloween treat at new farm

ix months ago, Bonnie Swank sat on her stool in the middle of a cornfield on 4751 Pacheco Pass Highway, wondering if the large piece of land around her could serve as the next home for the Swank Farms corn maze. Bonnie’s husband, Dick, kept insisting it was a good location. The Swanks had been looking for a new site for their corn maze after the previous land that they were renting for the corn maze was sold last December.

After a 17-year run at the former location adjacent to the Hollister Airport, the Swanks needed to find a new home.

Even though the new location has turned out to be a prime spot, Bonnie initially couldn’t see it working. ➝6

“I tried to imagine how this was going to work,” says Bonnie, a former window-cover business owner.

“I sat in that field for about an hour, and I could finally see it.”

Even though Swank Farms is far from a finished product—a variety of regulations delayed construction until 15 days before this year’s opening on Sept. 29—Bonnie and Dick’s intuition proved prescient.

The new location sits on 20 acres adjoining their home ranch, and Bonnie says it’s been business as usual, as customers from the Central Coast and Bay Area descend upon Hollister to experience Swank Farms.

Some of the featured attractions include the corn maze—which consists of two different courses along with a haunted version at night— to go along with a pumpkin patch, pedal karts, pumpkin slingshot, corn cannon and a pair of giant jumping pillows—one for children and one for adults.

“It has been a great addition because the older people can be on

one pillow and the more rambunctious group on the other,” says Bonnie.

Bonnie is a jack of all trades— literally. Last Thursday, she was hard at work hammering in some nails to put the finishing touches on a pen that houses the chickens. Never afraid to get her hands dirty, Bonnie—affable as always— still wonders at times how everything came together in such a short amount of time.

For a while, it had looked as if the Swank Farms experience would be a no-show for the 2017 season.

“We didn’t get a use permit until 15 days before we opened,” says Bonnie. “That meant we literally couldn’t put in any electrical, plumbing or the parking lot until we got that permit. So this all happened within a couple of weeks. We had people drop what they were doing and come help us. There were plenty of people who didn’t think we’d get open. We’re very proud of everything—it might not be perfect, but at least we have a good team and we’re up and running.”

Through all the uncertainty of finding a new location, Bonnie says she can’t wait for what the future holds.

When the Swanks could no longer rent the property that housed the farm for the l17 years, they could have packed it in and called it quits.

“We could’ve said goodbye to the corn maze,” says Bonnie. “But people enjoy coming here, and we enjoy putting it on.”

Bonnie says she can hardly wait to see how the facility will look a year from now. A new two-story snack shack will feature a sit-down lunch counter, fudge shop and store. Eventually, the Swanks plan on renting out the upstairs portion of the shack to hold weddings and various social events, including farm to table dinners.

“Hopefully people follow us in our vision and what’s to come,” says Bonnie. “Some of them can’t see what we’re trying to do.”

For the Swanks, running the farm and corn maze has been a labor of love. In 2000, Dick realized that in order to turn a profit— farming is tough business, especially for the smaller family-owned operation—he knew Swank Farms would have to do something different.

In the same year Dick met Bonnie, in 2000, he planted a field to create a corn maze.

Talk about perfect timing. Bonnie, who has a background in apparel design and interior design, became the maze designer. The

he fun factor in downtown Gilroy just got kicked up a notch with the opening of Bartenders Union, the newest business venture of Dustin Evanger (formerly the owner of The Hill Bar & Grill in Morgan Hill) and his three business partners. A ribbon-cutting was held Oct. 23.

“As former bartenders, we wanted to create a place where we would want to go hang out,” explained Evanger. So they built Bartenders Union, an urban chic, industrial décor bar with metal stools, aluminum corrugated ceiling, pendant light fixtures made out of whiskey bottles and walls paneled with reclaimed wood.

“It is a comfortable hangout, for everybody—old, young and everything in between.”

Along with a full bar, there are 20 beers on tap and four in the bottle. When a keg is finished, it is replaced with something entirely new. Two red wines and two white wines are also available.

Be prepared to bring in your own nibbles or food as no food is served at this establishment. But there is plenty to do with two pool tables, two pinball machines, a jukebox and two big-screen TVs. A mural entitled, Union Rules, takes up an entire wall and is meant to be as instructive as it is humorous with tongue-in-cheek rules such as “If you yell, whistle or waive money, you will only wait longer” and “The muddler is broken today.”

ach Freitas is no stranger to music.

He’s no stranger to Hollister, either. In fact, the Hollister native has been sharing his talents with the town for the past decade.

Many local residents may recognize his name by catching him at such nearby haunts as The Hollister House Bar & Grill or San Juan Bautista’s 18th Barrell Tasting Room. He’s also been asked to play his original tunes for neighboring cities.

Now, at the young age of 25,

Freitas is releasing his latest CD: “Desolation Animals.”

But Freitas says this isn’t his first rodeo.

His first solo album, “Blow off the Steam,” was released in October 2016, and in 2014 he released a four-song EP/CD entitled “Bitter Vanilla.” Also, this past May, Freitas, along with his old band, Kizmet, released an album called "Friend of the Animals.”

The 2010 San Benito High School graduate says that his music is a combination of alternative rock and acoustic singer-songwriter music.

“This CD has a good mix of those two sounds, but there's a couple electronic songs which is a big jump from what I usually do,” he says of his current CD. With help from friends, Ryan Loomis and Maxim Crist, Freitas recorded and produced the CD at a home studio.

“This album is the best work I've made so far,” says Freitas.

Though he says the best way to purchase a CD is to attend one of his shows, Diaz Liquors and Johnny’s Girl also will be carrying his CDs. His music is also available on

streaming services such as Spotify, YouTube and Apple Music.

“Desolation Animals”—which title was inspired by Jack Kerouac’s novel, ”Desolation Angels”—will be released on Oct. 28, and will then be available through streaming or downloading.

Freitas says he’s thankful that the community has been so supportive.

“It means the world to me and keeps me inspired to write music,” says Freitas.

Never fill the tires to the maximum pressure listed on the sidewall of the tire. Proper tread depth allows the tire to shed water and can help prevent your vehicle from hydroplaning. Goodyearautoservice.com recommends the penny test to check the tread depth of a vehicle’s tires by inserting the penny into the groove with Lincoln’s head upside down. If all of Lincoln’s head is visible, it’s time to replace your tires. Tires can wear unevenly so always check the tread at both the inside and outside edges as well as the center of the tire on all four tires.

ith summer in the rearview mirror and winter on the horizon, it’s time to get your vehicle ready for the cold and wet weather. Regular maintenance of the battery, wipers, tires and headlights can help keep you and your vehicle safe when road conditions take a turn for the worse.

Battery Everything starts with the battery, literally. The battery powers the starter motor and all the various relays and control modules that make the vehicle function properly. Extreme

weather can have an effect on the performance of the battery. A weak battery may not show any signs of trouble, so it is best to have it tested by a reputable repair facility or an automotive parts store to be certain.

Wipers Windshield wipers clear the windshield of rainwater and other debris that would otherwise obstruct the front glass. Wiper blades are considered to be a “wearable” item, and after baking in the hot sun all summer, they may need to be replaced.

The rubber can become hard and no longer flex to the curves of the glass. If your wipers streak or skip,

However, decreasing vehicle speed and increasing the distance between you and others when the weather gets rough may be the best way to prevent you and your vehicle from having to use those life-saving features.
