f walls could talk, El Teatro Campesino’s would speak of the stories and the characters that existed within them.

They may even speak of the lives and struggles of the performers who acted within them.

Such stories are reflected in the the pictures that hang upon the walls and in the costumes and props from the past productions nestled between them.

With its most recent production, ¡Viva la Causa! (Long Live the Cause), El Teatro Campesino (ETC) is literally taking audiences behind these walls and revisiting the stories they held. It also tells of the history and the current issues of the Chicano people. ➝ 6

SOCIAL JUSTICE ‘¡Viva La Causa!’ preserves Chicano history in a meaningful way that still has very contemporary implications.

Initially developed by ETC artists, “¡Viva La Causa!" premiered at the theater in the spring of 2016 as a retrospective piece to celebrate the 50 year history of the theater.

Recently, these artists felt a responsibility to bring the show back while making the necessary changes to it in order to respond to the current political climate.

Christy Sandoval and Emily Morales co-produce and co-direct this current production, as well as perform in it. Along with Andres Ortiz and Cristal Gonzalez (fellow performers in the show), Sandoval and Morales reworked last year’s script for a newer, more timely version.

This newest adaptation of ¡Viva La Causa! is much like last year’s: being a first of it’s kind.

Audience members begin their experience with a guided tour of the playhouse, and are walked around to the back room. It is there where the main character, Honest Sanchita (played by Cristal Gonzalez), describes the memorabilia from the theater’s past and encourages audience members to bid on them.

Shortly into the performance,

it is realized that this play is more than just the fun of a live auction.

“When we first developed this piece, the dystopian world we thought was hyper fictionalized has in a lot of ways become a reality.

We felt it even more timely to bring back this show now,” Sandoval said.

The show takes place in the not so distant future, where the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has raided San Juan Bautista. Sanchita has barricaded herself inside the teatro after losing all her friends, despite them having been American citizens.

The first people Sanchita encounters, since then, are the audience members. So she and her sidekick Rudy (played by Carlos “Quiensave” Cortez) take them from room to room to share historical memorabilia with them, hoping to preserve their memories and history.

As the audience begins to move through the playhouse, Sanchita presents them with the classic teatro tale of “La Carpa de los Rasquachi” and a special tribute to the creation of “Zoot Suit.”

Much like Sanchita, Sandoval said that El Teatro Campesino has always had a mandate for social justice, and that the artists there feel a responsibility to keep Chicano history from being forgotten.

“The current youth is at risk of not knowing this history and these stories.

Preserving this history in a meaningful way that hopefully reaches the mind through the heart, is really what the Teatro has always been about and continues to be,” she said.

Performances for ‘¡Viva La Causa!’ continue through September 24: Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays at 8pm and Saturday & Sunday matinee shows at 2pm. Tickets range from $15-$20 (Special discount codes and promotions to be released via El Teatro Campesino’s Facebook page on select performances).

A poignant puppet show taken from the teatro vault, “Juanito y los ABC’s,” is also performed. It is a tale of a young Chicano boy growing up in the American educational system and it has found resonance to many of its viewers.

Morales recalled how she’d seen this puppet show affect the many students who have come to watch school shows.

“You see the kids reacting, and even feeling sad for the character, and you can see kind of how it’s even reflected in their lives too.

They can see themselves and find themselves within the production.

That is the best part for me and the most rewarding, for sure.”

It is the ending of the play, however, that will leave audience members pondering over the issues affecting the Chicano people today.

It blends the tale of “Corridos” with a tale of social justice. Though it was depicted as a fictional world of the future, it rings truth to what is presently occurring in our country.

ecently, I spent a night in Italy without ever leaving Morgan Hill. As the Italians would say, I had the buono fortuna (good luck) to get a seat at a sold-out pasta cooking class at the beautiful Guglielmo Winery. The class was presented

by Roberta and Gioacchino Barile, a husband/wife team from PiemontExperience [sic], an Italian culinary school that offers cooking classes and customized travel tours. There was a special connection with these chefs since Emilio and Emilia Guglielmo, the founders of the winery, were also from the Piemonte region of Italy.

As the class sipped on Emile’s Grand Cuvee California Champagne ($15.95), Roberta demonstrated the making of four different pasta shapes—all using the same two ingredients: high quality semolina flour and water. She deftly kneaded, rolled, cut and curled the dough into piles. Said Roberta, “I don’t use recipes. The amount of water I use depends on the humidity of the room. The trick is to feel the texture of the dough, making sure it has the right moisture content.” Amazingly, the shapes produced different flavors and textures in the resulting cooked pasta dishes.

The four pasta dishes were brilliantly paired with four Guglielmo wines. The first pasta dish, guitar troccoli, was paired with the fresh, lemony flavors of a 2016 Pinot Grigio, ($15). The 2015 Grignolino, 92 points and a gold medal winner, complemented the spiciness of the next course: the orecchiette pugliesi, a pasta served with broccoli pesto and crispy croutons, A pasta e fagioli, the third course, was served with the 2016 Dolcetto ($22). The white beans and smoky bacon in the dish were accented by the wood smoke aromas of the wine with pomegranate flavors shining through. The last pasta course was

the cheese gnocchi in a rich gorgonzola, cream sauce and sprinkled with chopped walnuts. The 2014 Barbera, a bold Italian varietal with a well-balanced acidity, was a flavorful pairing, which helped cut through the richness of the cheese sauce.

At the end of the evening, with visions of gondolas and hugs all around, we said “buona notte” (good night) and “grazie mille” (thank you very much) for such a special evening.

S

ometime in your life, be sure you see a total solar eclipse.” I received this advice years ago from a couple who regularly traveled to exotic corners of the globe—places like Turkey and Mongolia—to witness solar eclipses. It was earnest advice, and I never forgot it.

You have probably heard the expression, “It’s not the middle of nowhere, but you can see it from there.” Portions of eastern Oregon are in the middle of nowhere; dead center. If you suspect I am

dabbling in hyperbole, visit Frenchglen, Prairie City, and the town of Andrews by the Alvord Desert. Standing in this silent and immense landscape, you will tremble with a troubling sense of vulnerability and meek insignificance.

My friend, Dan Merrick, and I came to eastern Oregon to feel a bit of that, but also to see the eclipse.

A right turn at Redding onto Highway 299 took us up the Pit River to Alturas where we turned north onto Highway 395 and the entrance to the middle of nowhere.

Many miles of sagebrush and

juniper trees later, we reached the town of John Day where we realized we were not the only people who had come to see the eclipse.

The roads were busy, restaurants bustled, and every merchant in town had t-shirts or some article of eclipse memorabilia. The townspeople had subdivided every football field, park, and vacant lot into tiny camping and eclipse viewing parcels available for rent.

All we wanted in John Day was a meal and a coffee pot. Those things accomplished, we continued north on Highway 395 to a forest road just south of Long Creek, Oregon.

By now, we knew that solitude was out of the question, but seven miles up a dirt road, we found a 6,000foot high perch with the expansive setting we hoped for.

Eclipse morning, just after 8am, I saw the moon first touch the disk of the sun through my camera viewfinder. While the entire eclipse would take two and a half hours, the total eclipse would last a scant two minutes. We set up our tripods and cameras mindful of the advice of every expert I consulted about photographing a solar eclipse: don't let picture taking distract you from the main event.

As the remaining slice of sun thinned toward totality, the air chilled. Sunsets have edges—shafts of light here, shadows there—but this was an eerie uniform dusk that evenly dimmed the hundreds of square miles we could see. Going, going, gone. People nearby gasped and called out, and I felt a stirring I checked with a deep swallow and several rapid blinks. High above, an astounding jewel radiated needles of pure white light alone in the near total darkness.

Two hours later, Dan and I sat with no regrets in a seven-mile long string of stop-and-go traffic waiting to pass the one crossroad in the lonely outpost of Long Creek.

My world-traveling eclipse-chasing friends had given me good advice.

t’s September, and for most Americans, the eating frenzy of the holidays is still safely out of mind, tucked far off into the future somewhere behind Halloween and Thanksgiving.

For many American Hindus, however, holiday season—and the eating that it brings—begins in fall with multi-day festivals like Navarathri and Diwali.

Across the Bay Area, these festivals bring Hindus together in celebratory gatherings. While people flock to the growing number of Hindu temples, the most anticipated events are the parties at friends’ houses.

In houses from Santa Clara to Marin counties, metallic designer sandals are kicked off at travertine tiled entryways. Inside, the party is a riot of richly colored textiles

and glittering jewelry as guests use the party as an excuse to don their otherwise neglected Indian party clothes. Guests greet friends who they haven’t seen since the last holiday season, speaking in dialects they rarely use anywhere else.

As with all celebrations, the centerpiece is the food, and it’s secret ingredient is generosity. If Indian food is already known for it’s richness, the special foods that accompany Indian festivals even more so. Cultural norms further dictate that a generous host will encourage guests to eat to excess, and that a gracious guest will oblige. So, trays of steaming appetizers are circulated, sweet drinks are imbibed, all before a buffet meal that rarely includes fewer than five items.

An unfortunate byproduct of this generosity, of course, is the calories. For most Americans, the season between Thanksgiving and Christmas alone causes an estimated increase in caloric intake by a staggering 2000 calories a day, with the feast days themselves producing a whopping 7000 calories.

For American Hindus, who celebrate both old and new cultures, this period of caloric increase is two to three times larger.

Unfortunately, with double the joy comes more than double the trouble. The South Asian community, to which most Hindus belong, has four times a greater risk of heart disease than the rest of the American population. They also have a greater risk for diabetes and are more likely to be “thin-fat”, meaning that though their weight is low on the Body Mass Index scale, they are more likely to have higher body fat percentages.

In short, with this time of year begins the possibility for consuming an inordinately large number of calories. The question then is— just how to navigate this drawn out holiday season? Stay tuned as over the coming weeks and months, we highlight some of the ways in which we can curb holiday eating.

Unrequited love in Sondheim’s ‘Follies’

rom the opening languorous procession of Broadway showgirls in stupendous headdresses and a boatload of sequins and rhinestones, through the finale and final bows of the cast, be prepared to be dazzled by South Valley Civic Theatre’s production of Stephen Sondheim’s Follies.

Director Megan Griffin has assembled a cast of triple-threat actors, singers and dancers who deliver on all levels in this musical story of a group of Ziegfeld Follies-like dancers who gather for a reunion as the Weismann Theater on Broadway is about to be demolished to make way for precious New York City parking in 1971. Chief

among them are Follies dancers Sally and Phyllis and the men who wooed and married them: Ben and Buddy.

Each couple’s 30-year marriage has faced its challenges. First off, Sally was in love with Ben but married the philandering Buddy Plummer.

She’s been carrying a torch ever since.

The other couple, Ben and Phyllis, were mismatched from the start on intellectual, economic and social levels. The Stones are unhappy and bitter.

As the reunion begins and the Follies alumnae in elegant gowns greet each other as long-lost friends.

The show pairs younger versions of the characters with their more seasoned and disillusioned selves. “Waiting for the Girls Upstairs” showcases Callie Camacho-Light as Phyllis

Rogers Stone, Brianna Pember as Young Phyllis, Suzanne Guzzetta as Sally Durant Plummer, Emily Hansen as Young Sally, Bob Brown as Benjamin Stone, Edie Garcia-Flores as Young Ben, Michael Kaelin as Buddy Plummer and Andy Gonzalez as Young Buddy.

Virtually every character gets a chance to shine, either solo or in an ensemble song.

And although the show truly belongs to the four central characters, its heart is in Sally, with her deep emotional longing for what she could not—and cannot ever— have. Suzanne Guzzetta, with a lovely voice, lays her emotions totally bare in the aching “In Buddy’s Eyes” and “Losing My Mind.”

Michael Kaelin’s Buddy is a true song and dance man, neatly marrying comedy and pathos into a singular package of energy with top-notch vocals and Chaplinesque physical comedy. “The Right Girl,” at the top of the second act, is a tour de force.

Our other unhappy couple, the Stones, are equally ill-suited to one another. As Ben, Bob Brown is appropriately ill at ease, and grabs our sympathy in “The Road You Didn’t Take.”

He’s partnered with the sensational Callie Camacho-Light, who sashays her way through “Could I Leave You?” leaving no question as to the answer.

Sondheim’s scores leave little room for error, and the cast is up to the challenge, ably assisted by vocal director Carol Harris, music director Alan Chipman and a 13-piece band (which sometimes overpowers some sung vocals). Choreographers Christine Carrillo and Jessica Damron keep the dance action lively.

Michelle Griffin and Adrianne Wilkinson’s costume designs and headdresses are truly spectacular, awash in sparkles, satin and chiffon. Bravo all around!
