n this year’s Explore Santa Cruz, we’re headed north. Erin Malsbury catches a wave up to West Cliff Drive to celebrate not only the famous surfer statue—which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year—but also the history of the surfing culture that is such an essential part of Santa Cruz. Then Johanna Miller heads up Highway 1 to be among the first to walk the trails of the new, 5800-acre Cotoni-Coast Dairies National Monument that will be opening soon to the public. After those breathtaking views, Adam Joseph takes us a little further up to Davenport, which has more reasons than ever to entice both locals and tourists into a day trip. On the way back, he drops by the revitalized UCSC Quarry, which has teamed up with San Francisco’s Noise Pop for some summer shows. If you want to unwind after all that, Steve Kettmann explains in this issue why it’s okay to just relax and talk about the game at your favorite Santa Cruz bar. All that plus dozens of listings to help you find the best food, drink, entertainment, shops and so much more—it’s all in here!

Bars, Grills and TVs

In defense of going out to eat, drink and watch sports BY STEVE KETTMANN

I

t was about the last thing I was expecting, spontaneously dropping into the Chili’s sports bar at the east entrance of Capitola Mall. I tend to avoid shopping malls, or when I have to make a stop, I plot a timely escape route, but this visit was different. It felt out of time, one of those odd moments of sudden connection that make you glad to be part of humanity, an unlikely little gem of a memory. All it took was a little sports talk with strangers and I felt a bond, a connection that pulled me back to contours of pre-Covid life that I’d both forgotten and stopped believing could exist. Justin was tending bar, and when he

14

FOOD & DRINK

SCVG2022.indd 14

found out I was there in the hopes of seeing the Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom, who at the time was in the middle of one of the more remarkable runs in sports of my lifetime, he laid the bad news on me: “No, man, we don’t have it.” I sipped off the top of my big Uncle Dave’s and explained to Justin, almost under my breath, that I just wanted to watch deGrom. Justin shook his head in deep commiseration, and mentioned he was a former college pitcher. We were instantly deep in conversation, like old friends, talking about deGrom’s astonishing run, and on from there. Justin is a particular kind of sports fan, a fan of the game more than just a honk for one team. He grew up a Giants fans and is loyal enough that he could never cheer for the Dodgers—but other than that, he loves good stories and good human drama. I’d moved on to a burger by the time I learned deGrom had pitched three stunning innings – striking out eight of nine – and then left the game with an undisclosed shoulder ailment. “Always better the shoulder than the elbow,” Justin said encouragingly, as he measured out a shot for a group in a booth behind me. I get why some people react to dudes talking sports the way I react to overabundant cologne in a crowded elevator going nowhere. When it hits you the wrong way, you want no part

of it. But you know what? I love sports, and I love talking sports. I’ll say it. I’ll mean it. I’ll stand by the words. I love watching sports for the human stories I see there, and I love talking sports with others who also see them. I constantly look constantly to sports as a lens for how to think about life’s challenges, from the little ones to the great, wobble-your-knees trials. I think of a famous moment where Wilmer Flores, now with the Giants, thought he had been traded from the Mets, and when he came out on infield at Citi Field, the fans could all see him crying. He cared that much. I know Wilmer, and he’s a wonderful guy—down to earth, not in any way stuck on himself. In that moment, his human qualities came through to the fans. He had the courage to let his emotions flow honestly, and the grace to get through the day memorably. My go-to spot for sports in Santa Cruz used to be Seabright Brewery (now Seabright Social). I loved sitting there with friends—including “I Wish I Was Billy Collins” poet Pete McLaughlin— and watching a World Series game. My wife and I used to go to a sports bar on Pacific to watch World Cup—a full-fledged sports-watching spot in Santa Cruz at last, but it didn’t last much longer than Juergen Klinsmann as U.S. national coach. My favorite beer joints, Beer 30 and Discretion, don’t

FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME Sports fans toast while watching an NBA finals game at Carmona's BBQ Deli in Watsonville. PHOTO: TARMO HANNULA really work for sports, although Beer 30 has a couple of pretty-good-quality screens up inside where you order. I stopped in at Sir Froggy’s Pub across from the Soquel Post Office as I was working on this article. It was a slow night, but it did have a good local-bar feel. The big-screen TVs were in good spots, the bartender had an engaging air, and down at the far end, the only two other people in the place were having a lively, not-shy-on-opinion talk. “No harm no foul!” a ringing female voice cried out, and I felt almost like I was back in the pressbox. I remember watching baseball’s All-Star Game with San Francisco Chronicle sports columnist Bruce Jenkins, which was about as joyous a game-watch as

I’ve ever had. I think watching with passionate, knowledgeable friends is always going to be better than a sports-bar experience, but for some games, it just feels right to be out—and in the period of reopening, I think it’s good to challenge yourself to get out there and soak up something new and different. There are lots of great bars in Santa Cruz, and you can watch sports at a lot of them, but Santa Cruz still needs its ultimate sports bar. I have to think that the more good sports bars we have, where people are brought together, the more we might find at least a little bit of a bridge back to exploring our common humanity. You know what I’d love to see? Sean Venus of Venus Spirits, a dude who

clearly knows how to put together a quality venue, trying his hand at it— finding a location and hooking us up with kick-ass cocktails and a selection of good beer on tap. Have promotions and contests and pools, and of course make sure it’s wired with all the networks, so that when something crazy is happening—deGrom throwing another gem, for instance—we can all see it.

Steve Kettmann’s most recent book is “Remember Who You Are: What Pedro Gomez Showed Us About Baseball and Life,” now available at Bookshop Santa Cruz. To find the restaurant or bar that might become your next favorite place to watch sports, see our listings.

Cotoni-Coast Dairies National Monument is set to be Santa Cruz County’s next outdoor marvel BY JOHANNA MILLER

G

rowing up, my family and I would often drive the stretch of Highway 1 between Santa Cruz and San Francisco.

We loved taking this scenic route instead of risky Highway 17 or the speedy 101 corridor. My sister and I would watch the world fly by from the back seat of our two-door Honda Civic, the turbulent Pacific Ocean on one side and sprawling prairies and dense forests on the other. I always wondered: Where do all those dirt side roads lead? What habitats lay beyond? What views could be seen from the tops of those rolling green hills? Last month, I had the opportunity to find out. For the past year, I had been corresponding with Katy Poniatowski from Santa Cruz Mountains Trail Stewardship (SCMTS), a nonprofit involved in opening sections of the Cotoni-Coast Dairies National Monument in Davenport for public access. She told me that crews had

begun work on building trails, and wondered if I wanted to come out and see their progress. Of course, I leapt at the opportunity. Cotoni-Coast Dairies extends from the steep slopes of the Santa Cruz Mountains to the marine terraces overlooking the Pacific. Streams cut through the land towards the sea, creating waterways that act as important habitats for native plants, animals and fish and provide fresh water for surrounding communities. For decades, local organizations worked to save the property from private development. At one point, it was slated to be the site of a nuclear power plant; at another, a housing development of 150 mansions along the coast. In 1998, the Trust for Public Land purchased the property from Coast Dairies and Land Company, with help from the Sempervirens Fund and other local groups. Hundreds of acres were donated to California State Parks, and by 2014, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) was granted 6,000. In January 2015, a week before he left office, President Barack Obama officially designated Cotoni-Coast Dairies as a national monument. On May 3 I, along with photographer Erin Malsbury, arrived at Swanton Berry Farm, where we met Poniatowski and Garret Hammack, trail and park construction manager for SCMTS. We piled into Hammack’s truck and took off up a steep, bumpy farm trail. “It’s incredible that we finally are able to show people this property,” Hammack said. “There’s just nothing else like it.” We finally came upon a SCMTS crew busy clearing a newly built trail. Crews and scores of volunteers have been working on building what will eventually

be 19 miles of trail loops through coastal prairies and redwood forests. Hikers, mountain bikers and horseback riders will be able to explore a brand-new trail system, with the earliest trails opening by the end of 2022. “I started working here less than three years ago,” Poniatowski said as we began our first hike. “Then, we were barely doing advocacy for this network. It’s wild to see, even through the pandemic and the wildfires that this project is still able to move forward.” SCMTS is currently 2.9 miles into construction and hopes to fundraise $2.7 million through its ongoing fundraising campaign, Timeless Trails, to complete the rest of the project. By early June, they had reached $2.2 million. Poniatowski said it was thanks to the community’s support that they had been able to make it this far. “Everyone who spoke up years ago is now realizing the effects of their contributions to public land,” she said. “It’s really cool to see the community’s voice turn into real, tangible trails.” The prairies of Cotoni-Coast Dairies, dipping gradually down toward the coastline’s jagged cliffs and out to sea, are a sight to behold. I found myself gaping in awe at the expansive view. It almost didn’t look real. Soon we changed course. For now dubbed “Loop 3,” this trail quickly dipped into a dense redwood forest, with sharp drop-offs on one side. Poniatowski said it will be the most technical trail on the network, skinnier and steeper, less refined. Plans to connect the upper part of Loop 3 to San Vicente Redwoods are also in the works. “This trail shows just how quickly the terrain changes because of the watersheds,” Poniatowski said. “We

were just in a coastal prairie, and now we’re in redwoods. In 30 seconds, you can go from one to the other. It’s pretty amazing. I won’t be surprised if it becomes one of the more popular areas.” Added Hammack: “I love this section here, it looks like a fairy tale. It’s a really hard section to dig, though … right on a cliff edge with a rock wall below it. We had to truck all of it in by hand, too.” Hammack said that Loop 3 was handconstructed by volunteers. He guessed that in the past year, SCMTS had more volunteers than ever, with nearly 2,000 hours of volunteer impact logged in the last quarter. Poniatowski confirmed this. “I did the math last week,” she said. “Our volunteers have done more hours of trail work this year than there have been hours in the year. That’s pretty amazing.” As we hiked back to the truck, I wondered whose footsteps I might be walking in. The Cotoni-Coast land was originally inhabited by the Cotoni (pronounced “Cho-toe-knee”), who were part of the greater Ohlone tribes of the Monterey Bayand San Francisco Bay regions before European colonization. After settlers forced native communities off the land, it was divided among settlers through the Spanish land grant system, and was eventually acquired by a Swiss farming family in the 1860s. They developed it into a dairy and farmed there for more than a century. Prior to my trip to Cotoni-Coast Dairies I spoke to Ben Blom, field manager for the Central Coast Field Office of the BLM. He told me more about the property’s history and how they are trying to balance recreation and preservation. Half of the land—which is currently

set to open to the public in early fall of this year—will have no trails, with very limited access, Blom said. Sections will be set aside for scientific and educational purposes, habitat restoration and cattle grazing, and for local indigenous tribes to carry out cultural practices. BLM and its partners are also working with communities in Bonny Doon and Davenport, who have expressed concerns about increased traffic. “We’ve worked hard to balance a lot with the property,” Blom said. “For protection of its resources, for demands for public access, demands of locals, trying to accommodate people with

different abilities. I think we’ve landed in a good place.” The fact that so many volunteers have been involved is meaningful, he added. “What better way to have the community take ownership and care for the trail than to have the actual community help build them?” he said. Blom had told me that when I visited Cotoni-Coast Dairies, I would understand the importance of public access. “It’s a source of pride for Santa Cruz County that we have this resource,” he said. “When you get out there, you’ll see. The views from the property are otherworldly, unmatched and 46

Attractions It’s really « 45 inspirational. Elkhorn Slough Safari special that we have this right in our backyard.” He was right. I had driven by the property countless times in my life, imagining what it might be like to traverse the landscape, to look out to sea at the curve of the earth. Now that I had finally seen it, I knew more people should too.

of towering redwoods, and the space’s limestone provides natural acoustics far superior to most indoor concert halls. Royston used the elements of nature, carving the venue out of the former lime quarry. The layout is unique and asymmetrical, but there isn’t a bad seat in the joint. Since its construction, the Quarry has hosted experimental theater and Shakespeare. Students have held Bollywood tributes and political rallies; renowned cultural figures, including Angela Davis, Dolores Huerta and Cesar Chavez, have spoken, and notable musicians, from Ravi Shankar to Joan Baez, have performed. The Quarry also made an ideal spot for topless sunbathing in the ’70s. Following an $8 million renovation that includes upgrades to the stage, electrical infrastructure and capacity expansion—the amphitheater now seats 2,700, making it Santa Cruz’s largest outdoor venue—the Quarry reopened in 2017 after lying dormant for more than a decade. Fast forward another five years: Last April, Quarry general manager Jose Reyes-Olivias announced a collaboration between the venue and Noise Pop. “Noise Pop’s connection to independent music and culture felt like a perfect fit to find some great artists to play here,” he said. Noise Pop Industries founder Kevin Arnold delivered an initial statement that resonated with the same excitement: “We’re fortunate to have forged a partnership built on a shared vision and passion for the potential of the Quarry with the UCSC community.” In addition to founding the Noise Pop Festival and co-founding Treasure Island Musical Festival and Another Planet, the San Francisco-based Noise Pop Industries has produced hundreds of shows throughout the Bay Area and beyond. As champions of up-andcoming indie artists, the organization’s impressive resume features the Flaming Lips, Modest Mouse and early White Stripes shows. Mexican singer-songwriter Carla Morrison kicked off the Quarry-

52

ARTS & ENTERTAINAMENT

SCVG2022.indd 52

Noise Pop alliance on June 24—she’s touring for the first time in six years. Morrison’s international following is impressive—multiple platinum records, 3.2 billion streams, stadium sellouts— but her courage in writing about her mental health struggles has proven more captivating. Especially since her music breaks through language barriers—most of Morrison’s songs are sung in Spanish—and touches listeners deeply. Morrison’s acclaimed 2022 release El Renacimiento (The Rebirth) is just that—a return, a “rebirth,” after an extended hiatus. “I just felt like people were more enamored with my work than I was,”

“We’re fortunate to have forged a partnership built on a shared vision and passion for the potential of the Quarry with the UCSC community.” — KEVIN ARNOLD Morrison told Billboard. “Now that I think back on it, I was really depressed. But at that time, I didn’t know I was.” El Renacimiento is a deep emotional dive. The 12 carefully crafted tracks exude love, forgiveness, mourning, anxiety, healing and hope through acoustic compositions, electronica, indie rock and straightforward pop. “Te Perdi” (“I Lost You”) is a stripped-down, heart-on-her-sleeve ballad with a gentle percussive backbeat. Morrison’s delicate alto vocals build up to a poignant eruption about letting herself let go. Meanwhile, the Quarry-Noise Pop 2022 Summer Concert Series continues Aug. 12-13 with two nights of very different music. For 20 years, STS9 (Sound Tribe Sector 9) has branded

itself as being undefinable. Eventually, the jam band community embraced the five-piece instrumental outfit for their live improvisational musical expanses that can go on—and on. STS9’s fully immersive live shows also include mindbending light shows in sync with the music. A STS9 show might be what Ken Kesey envisioned acid tests could look like in the future.

STS9 plays Friday, Aug. 12 and Saturday, Aug. 13, 7pm. $47.50/$54.50; $77.50/premium; $37.50/students plus fees. Two nights $95; $155/premium; $77.50/students plus fees. Quarry Amphitheater at UC Santa Cruz, 1156 High St., Santa Cruz. quarry.ucsc.edu.

Davenport Delights

in around 3am each morning, works pastry magic, and usually disappears into Davenport’s early morning coastal fog long before any staff arrives. She’s behind one of the most delicious bear claws in Santa Cruz County, and quite possibly in all of California. When we stopped in, a table of folks from Key Largo, Florida, who were visiting Monterey made a special trip to Davenport solely for the bear claws. Before sitting down for breakfast or an early lunch at Whale City, it’s a good idea to check out the inventory—meaning the baked goods next to the cash register, illuminated on display behind a thick glass window as if they are the most valuable items at a fine jewelry shop. Usually, the bear claws sit on the second shelf down, an effervescent glow surrounding the icing that smothers these flakey mounds of goodness piled with stacks of almond slivers. On the inside, they only get better, with brownsugar magic spread throughout. Additionally, Whale City offers muffins, scones, cookies, bread, turnovers and a rotating assortment of cake, pie and anything else Esmeralda is inspired to bake under the Davenport moon. Whale City is open daily from 8am-6pm, but the bear claws are usually long gone by noon—earlier on weekends. Just a couple of blocks away down Highway 1 is the Davenport Roadhouse (1 Davenport Ave.), a true North Coast landmark It’s a great spot for breakfast or lunch, and a 12-room inn, as well. The area is known for its artisans, especially its art glass. Two places to see some of the best work are Lundberg Studios Contemporary Art Glass (121 Old Coast Road) and the nearby Chris Johnson Glass (131 Old Coast Road). Another of Davenport’s not-that-wellkept secrets is American Abalone Farms (245 Davenport Landing Road). The network of what looks like greenhouses is a farm housing roughly 500,000 abalones—sometimes two or three times that amount. Each of the buildings operates a network of 100% sustainable California red abalone (AAF is included in the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch Guide) that are grown on the farm from birth until they’re ready for consumption at 4 or 5 years old. All the

CLAWING THEIR WAY TO THE TOP The bear claws at Whale City Bakery (foreground) have put them on the foodie map. PHOTO: TARMO HANNULA water used is from the Monterey Bay, and the abalone feeds only local kelp. AAF also sells a variety of imported live seafood, including oysters, crabs and lobster—import location varies depending on the time of year. The picnic area, which owner Ocean Xie plans to upgrade and expand sometime soon, offers customers a place to chow down on fresh abalone with a view of the Pacific in the distance. Since AAF doesn’t have a restaurant permit yet, Xie cooks up an improvised abalone boil with corn and shrimp drenched in Coors Light. AAF is only open 10am-4pm on Saturday and Sunday, so plan accordingly. One of Davenport’s newest attractions is the Slow Coast Winebar (450 Highway

1), one of Beauregard Vineyards' tasting rooms. The comfortable living room setting boasts large windows with ocean views, which is a perfect way to close out a “Best of Davenport” experience. Just a few miles up the mountain in Bonny Doon, Lost Weekend Tasting Room serves many of the same offerings on Slow Coast’s menu, which rotates whatever is ready for consumption. The focus is usually on Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Cab and Zin, all of which are growm on the Beauregard Ranch Estate Vineyards in Bonny Doon. “Come for the wine and stay for the views,” reads the top of the tasting menu—a definitive sentiment wherever you are in Davenport.

BRONZE AGE The surfer statue was installed in May of 1992 with a plaque that reads, “This monument is dedicated to all surfers—past, present, and future.”

O

ne sunny morning in May, a crowd gathered around the surfer statue on West Cliff Drive. As birds glided past and surfers rode waves in the distance at Steamer Lane, people filed into rows of chairs and stood chatting.

Classic woodie wagons and vintage surfboards lined the scene, and a live band played surf-inspired tunes. The surf statue has become a beloved Santa Cruz landmark. To celebrate its 30th anniversary, the Santa Cruz Surfing Club Preservation Society and the City of Santa Cruz Parks and Recreation Department hosted a ceremony. Renowned surfboard shaper and president of the Santa Cruz Surfing Club Preservation Society Bob Pearson said a few words about the statue and explained the significance of the historic surfboards on display before introducing an assortment of speakers. MAN OF HIS TIME The many looks of the surf statute over the years. He has been dressed up to honor firefighters and mark the pandemic, and to celebrate holidays like Halloween and Christmas. Rittenhouse Sr. and Harry Mayo—97 and 98 years old respectively—attended, and Santa Cruz Mayor Sonja Brunner proclaimed May 23 as Santa Cruz Surfing Statue Day. “It is so symbolic and has become so iconic for Santa Cruz,” said Mayor Brunner. “And I just love watching it throughout the year with the different iterations—pumpkin head, t-shirts…” The figure donned a Hawaiian lei for the celebration. The 18-foot tall bronze figure was inspired by the members of the 1936 Santa Cruz Surfing Club. Members Bob Rittenhouse and Doug Thorne formed a committee in 1987 to create a statue after the death of club member Bill Lidderdale Jr. To get the sculpture approved, artists had to engineer it to withstand an 8.0 earthquake and 100 mph winds. Thomas Marsh designed the figure, Bill Curtis designed the base and Bill Grace and

David Steward shaped a replica 11-foot redwood surfboard used for casting. It was installed in May of 1992 with a plaque that reads, “This monument is dedicated to all surfers—past, present, and future.” Surfing and Santa Cruz have become almost synonymous. Watching one of the dozen spots in town during a swell gives a clear picture of why. But the roots go deeper than that. During the ceremony, historian Kim Stoner walked the crowd through Santa Cruz’s surf history. In July of 1885, three teenage Hawaiian princes—David Kawānanakoa, Jonah Kūhiō Kalaniana'ole and Edward Keli'iahonui—visited Santa Cruz while on a break from military school in San Mateo. One afternoon, they rode solid redwood Olo boards at the mouth of the San Lorenzo River.

Olo boards were reserved for Hawaiian royalty, and a replica board, displayed in front of the surf statue during the celebration, gave onlookers an idea of just how massive they were. At 17 feet long and six inches thick, “it’s good to be a king so you got some help bringing it to the beach,” joked Pearson. That afternoon in 1885 became the first recorded instance of surfing in North America. Surfing eventually took off in Santa Cruz in the 1930s, with local kids like Harry Mayo shaping boards in shop class. Wetsuits—which became another iconic part of this city’s surf history when they were popularized by local surfer and entrepreneur Jack O’Neill, who started his now world-famous O’Neill brand in a Santa Cruz garage in 1952—hadn’t hit the scene, 74 so surfers in those early years
