People used to visit Santa Cruz to see the freaks, the ones keeping California’s second-smallest county weird, like the T-shirt says.

Of course, they also liked the Beach Boardwalk, which attracts some 2 million guests each year. And there’s the Mystery Spot, which brings in crowds to see things upside down, and is a blast for kids.

But we are here to share the lesser-known places, the ones the locals savor that don’t always make the conventional guidebooks.

There’s Midtown Santa Cruz, a combination of places to shop, eat and be entertained that doesn’t get as much publicity, from the affordable, healthy Asian-style Charlie Hong Kong to two

elegant, authentic Italian restaurants within walking distance, Lillian’s and Sugo. Not to mention a few great entertainment spots, the Crepe Place, the Rio Theatre, and the weekly free Midtown Fridays Block Party.

Then, there’s Capitola, which is as close to visiting a Mediterranean village as you can get on the West Coast, with its colorful buildings, waterfront dining, and bodegas and bars filled nightly with live music.

Capitola is so colorful, it’s like a trip abroad

Nestled between Santa Cruz and Aptos lies the charming seaside village of Capitola, one of California’s oldest beach resort towns. Tucked along Monterey Bay, Capitola is beloved for its unique blend of family-friendly beaches, colorful architecture, and laidback coastal vibe mixed with just a twist nostalgia.

Originally developed in the late 1800s as a seaside retreat called Camp Capitola, the town evolved from a rustic vacation destination into a close-knit coastal community with deep artistic and surf

culture roots. At first glance, the iconic Venetian Court cottages perched along the shoreline instantly evoke a playful Mediterranean feel that perfectly matches Capitola’s relaxed charm.

Built in 1924 and inspired by the colorful waterfront buildings of Venice, Italy, the cottages were among California’s earliest seaside resort hotels. Today, they house a mix of inns, vacation rentals and small businesses, drawing visitors who come for the ocean views, walkability and vintageCalifornia atmosphere. At sunset, when the pastel buildings glow against the water and seagulls float above the bay, it’s easy to understand why Capitola has remained such a treasured escape for generations.

Capitola Beach is cradled by cliffs lined with architecturally unique homes and delightfully diverse gardens. The waterway known as Soquel Creek flows alongside the Village, while the Esplanade

stretches along the sand with benches perfect for people watching. Families, surfers and sunbathers gather year-round, giving the beach an easygoing, welcoming feel. Public restrooms and outdoor rinse stations make lingering by the water all the more convenient.

Another sweet Capitola tradition is the collection of colorful ceramic sea stars mounted next to front doors and homes throughout town, particularly around Depot Hill and the Village. Created by local artist Jerry Clarke, the handmade pieces have become an unofficial symbol of Capitola’s artistic spirit and community charm. Spotting them throughout the neighborhoods feels almost like participating in a town-wide scavenger hunt.

of Monterey Bay. Around nearly every walkable corner, you’ll find restaurants, wine bars and independent boutiques that encourage visitors to slow down and linger awhile. From beachfront dining at Zelda’s and Margaritaville to fancier favorites like Trestles and the iconic Shadowbrook Restaurant, with its historic tram that leads to the lobby, Capitola offers something for nearly every taste and budget, including pizza by the slice when you can’t bear to leave the beach.

For overnight guests, breakfast is big. And here’s where the village can feel small. Mr. Toots is a must for coffee and light bites, but for something more substantial, Gayle’s bakery and café offers an exceptional range of breakfast, lunch and dinner) options. It will be crowded, but worth the wait.

Beyond food and drink, the dozens of independent boutique-style stores lining the streets are well worth a visit. Sure, there are the requisite tourist stops for tee-shirts, postcards and taffy, but you’ll be surprised to find so many great shopping spots too. Visit Clementine & Co. and Lumen Gallery for home goods, Kickback and Jules Street for women’s apparel, Captiola Beach Co. for hoodies, or Craft Gallery for jewelry, just to name just a few. You’ll want to leave plenty of time for browsing.

Finally, if your travel plans include pampering (and I hope they do) you’re in luck here too. A luxury treatment Glow Prescription Skincare is walking distance from the village and award-winning Tracy’s Nails is just five miles away.

For an extended stay, rent a Venetian beachfront bungalow, splurge on the Inn at Depot Hill or opt for the Capitola Hotel, both quaint and perfectly situated. If you’re vacationing with family, there are plentiful short-term rental options too.

If you’re in the mood for more exploring, Capitola extends beyond the Village and offers some sweet spots worth a visit. There are some notable eateries off 41st Avenue, including Busy Bee Café for breakfast and lunch, Café Cruz for dinner, and several great breweries for casual food and drink.

Whether you spend the day browsing boutiques, sipping wine beside the creek, watching surfers from the Esplanade or simply soaking in the ocean air, Capitola has a way of encouraging people to slow down. It’s the kind of place where beauty, community and coastal simplicity come together naturally, leaving visitors feeling as though they’ve stumbled upon a small Mediterranean gem hidden along California’s Central Coast.

Spend even a little time in Santa Cruz, and you’ll quickly hear more than your fair share of opinions about which is best…the West Side or the East Side. Rather than getting into that debate, we decided to meet in the middle – literally – to focus on a neighborhood gem everyone can agree on: Midtown.

Broadly speaking, “Midtown” describes the stretch of Soquel Ave. around Seabright Ave., between Ocean Street. and Morrissey Boulevard. Here you will find at least one – perhaps even two – full days and nights of food, fashion, shopping, family activities, fitness, music and fun.

Try to arrange your visit for a Friday so you can take advantage of the Midtown Summer Block Party (1111 Soquel Ave., 5:00-8:30pm), which is pretty much exactly what its name says – a weekly block party showcasing 14 Santa Cruz bands alongside rotating food trucks, artists, makers, and vendors. Expect live music, specialty drinks and familyfriendly activities, all wrapped in an unmistakably local vibe. What started as a small gathering has grown into one of the season’s defining traditions, drawing thousands each week to celebrate creativity, connection, and long summer evenings. Bonus: Admission is free.

The area is home to some of the best restaurants in Santa Cruz:

Lillian’s opened on July 4, 2007, and has been a local institution. It’s built around a simple idea: a neighborhood eatery that feels like an extension of the family table. Owned and operated by the Moreno

family, the restaurant draws inspiration from Grandma Lillian’s home cooking – a blend of traditional Sicilian recipes and Italian-American influences rooted in her upbringing in Yonkers, New York. In the kitchen, Executive Chef Chris Moreno honors those family traditions with fresh, seasonal touches, while brother Matt Moreno leads the front-of-house as Beverage Director and Sommelier. The restaurant feels warm, welcoming, and deeply personal. The energy is reminiscent of bustling brasseries like Balthazar in New York’s SoHo neighborhood. For something quieter, calmer, and more intimate, The Midway brings a fresh- ingredient-driven menu, led by acclaimed Santa Cruz chef Katherine Stern. What began as a farmers market pop-up in 2020 has mouthwatering food shaped by what’s fresh, homegrown, and in season. Stern’s close relationships with area growers. It’s a place where “farm-to-

table” isn’t just a tagline, it’s the entire, delicious experience.

If you want more options for Italian, try Sugo (1116 Soquel), a relaxed Europeanstyle pasta bar, serving authentic Italian dishes built around fresh pasta, organic ingredients, and customizable sauces and toppings. Run by Italian-born restaurateurs Andrea Loporcaro and Marco Paoletti, Sugo is the kind of place equally suited for a bowl of cacio e pepe or a lingering dinner with wine on the patio. Looking for something quicker and more casual, but just as tasty? Then head to Charlie Hong Kong (1141 Soquel), which has been a staple since 1998, serving fast, affordable meals inspired by Southeast Asian street food and built around organic produce. Each day, the kitchen preps roughly 500 pounds of fresh vegetables inside a repurposed 1950s ice cream stand. The prices have brought in a steady stream of Yogis, surfers, students and professors and

the casual restaurant was recommended as a must-see by the New York Times.

You could also build your visit around a “Sunday Fun-day,” with plans to end up at The Crepe Place (1134 Soquel), a Santa Cruz institution that hosts Grateful Sundays (6-9pm) every week in their beautiful garden, leaning deep into the Grateful Dead songbook and its extended universe.

The series, led by guitarist Matt Hartle, has become a longtime tradition, drawing top-tier players from across the Bay Area. It’s part concert, part community hang, and a quintessential Santa Cruz way to spend a Sunday evening. There is great live music there on other nights, including national names such as Robyn Hitchcock, and plenty of funk, blues and jazz.

Another classic Santa Cruz experience is to take in a show at the Rio Theatre. Its summer lineup features a diverse range of shows with everyone from Lucinda Williams (June 18) and Shawn Colvin (Aug 8) to Snail (Aug 15), the Kirtan Love Experience with Jai Uttal (Aug. 22) and Public Image Ltd. (Sept. 5), among many others.

The Rio isn’t just an iconic Midtown venue – it’s a defining architectural landmark of Santa Cruz. With its striking Art Deco design – specifically the sleek, ocean liner-inspired Streamline Moderne style – the Rio has anchored the neighborhood since opening in 1949. For stocking up the Airbnb, you’ll find

a number of grocery stores in Midtown, including corporate giants like Safeway, Grocery Outlet and Whole Foods. But act like a local and skip all those.

The far better option is to try an independent or family-owned places, Shopper’s Corner (622 Soquel) or Staff of Life (1266 Soquel). You’ll get a more authentic, native taste of Santa Cruz, especially if you prefer organic options. Operating since 1938, the familyowned Shopper’s Corner is known for its outstanding wine selection, meat offerings and its friendly, helpful service. The meat department buys whole cows, so you know what you are getting and the liquor section is unmatched.

Although they don’t offer rentals, you can still ogle the latest in bikes, surfboards and skateboards at Bicycle Trip (1001 Soquel), Cal Surf Outlet (1129 Soquel) and Bill’s Wheels Skateshop (1240 Soquel), which has been serving Santa Cruz since 1977.

If all that shopping gets you hungry and thirsty, you’ve got great choices, especially if “goes with a beer” is your love language. Brand new to Midtown is Gilman Brewing (817 Soquel), featuring a lush patio with comfy sofas, fire pits, tasty brews and a full menu including apps, salads and sandos. At the opposite end of Midtown, you’ll find Sante Adairius Rustic Ales (1315 Water), which boasts a charming, dog-friendly patio, awardwinning brews and shares its space with longtime staple Bookie’s Pizza. And right in between those two, at Akira Sushi (1222 Soquel), you can satisfy your sushi, sake and beer cravings all at once.

If you’re looking for levity and you’ve heard that comedy shows might be the place to provide that light-hearted feeling–well, my friends–you are in the right place. Santa Cruz is very funny, I mean, look around.

Stand-up comedy and comedians, although more widely popular than ever in modern times, are severely misunderstood. At most free comedy shows (Santa Cruz has numerous), nobody is getting paid. The comics routinely

drive several hours to perform for five minutes and even if they earn some money, it won’t offset the $50 they paid for gas. So remember to tip.

On ticketed shows the profits are split, but in general, being a standup comic is not about making money. It’s about making strangers laugh in breweries, outdoor spaces and anywhere there’s a microphone. It’s a noble pursuit.

Stand-up comedians come in all genders, shapes and sizes, and all of the comedy shows in Santa Cruz are no-hate zones. So heckling is discouraged. Operating under a banner of respect, the Santa Cruz comedy scene features comics who

Tuesdays are for the diehard comedy fans, and the morbidly curious, The Blue Lagoon,(923 Pacific Avenue, Santa Cruz), is the longest-running free comedy show in California. Hosted by Escobedo, the event features a procession of comedians working hard to make you laugh. The show is free and for ages 21 and over only. Say hello to the colorful barkeeps and the bass player in the corner.

Every other Wednesday, on the west side of town at Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing, (402 Ingalls St #27, Santa Cruz). Starting at 8pm is a fun collegiate show. UCSC graduate Rich Isaac hosts a line-up from around the Bay Area. Free and for those over 21 only.

A monthly comedy show, always on a Thursday, takes place at Woodhouse Brewing & Blending, (119 Madrone St, Santa Cruz). Hosted by the hard-working comic Michael Booth, this event features the best comics from Santa Cruz and the greater Bay Area. It’s another free show and starts at 7:30pm.

Monthly shows occur on Saturdays in Santa Cruz, Scotts Valley and the mountain town of Felton. On the first Saturday of the month, head to Bruno’s at 230 Mount Hermon Rd, Ste G, in Scotts Valley. Hosted by Booth this ticketed show always features a hot headliner from the region. 8pm.

Also on the first Saturday of each month is a ticketed comedy show put on at 11th Hour Coffee, (1001 Center Street, Santa Cruz). Hosted by UCSC graduate and perpetual good guy, Tyler Hinz. This show leans toward alternative humor, featuring some of the biggest names in the state. All ages, starting at 9pm.

And, if you feel like driving up into the mountains on a monthly Saturday is a ticketed showcase at The Felton Music Hall, (6275 Hwy 9, Felton). Hosted by local Nic Trevino, there’s music and regional headliners. It’s a mountain vibe, so wear flannel and a trucker hat.

Also in the mountains at Henflings, 9450 Highway 9, Ben Lomond, every 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month at 9pm is a rowdy open mic. Sign up, go up with host Nic Trevino.

5 Best Hikes for Visitors

From easy to challenging, there are all levels of hikes here

One of the best things for tourists visiting Santa Cruz is that we have amazing, accessible hikes that will make you feel like you are far, far away from a city. There’s wildlife, amazing trees, giant waves…nothing like what you find inland. Take the kids, or go solo, and check out some of our favorite walks.

A Santa Cruz thing: Santa Cruz Wharf to Natural Bridges hike

A sacred part of the California Coastal Trail, the path along West Cliff Drive lets you see, hear and feel the sea meet

the land - the surfers at Steamer Lane, the Santa Cruz Surfing Museum in the lighthouse, and stunning sunset views.

From the wharf to Natural Bridges is about 2 ½ miles, or 5,000 steps for most. The sidewalk takes you past marine cliff fauna, where you can watch the ever-present surfers, where Jack O’Neill developed the modern surfing wetsuit (the water is cold). The path takes a sharp turn to the Santa Cruz Surfing Museum. Check out the photographs and exhibits that chronicle over 100 years of surfing history. Just past the Santa Cruz Surfing Museum to the left of the path is Lighthouse Field State Beach. Inland is Lighthouse Field, the site of the Herculean effort to rescue this 37-acre parcel from developers. You can walk paths through the field; dogs are allowed on-leash only. If you want more beach, you can drop down into Mitchell Cove Beach, more

protected than Santa Cruz Beach. The path continues along the rugged, rocky West Cliff to your left and the mansion beach houses inland and culminates in a parking lot. You can walk down ramps into yet another stunning stretch of sand, Natural Bridges State Beach. There is an electric bike rental station at the corner of Swanton Boulevard and West Cliff Drive.

Redwood Grove Loop in Henry Cowell State Park

About 150 feet from the parking lot you will saunter into the 0.8-mile loop of the Redwood Grove of Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, home of the old-growth “virgin” Coast Redwood trees that can live more than 2,000 years. The trail passes within a few feet of some of the tallest trees in the world. The largest tree in the grove has a diameter of more than 17 feet and a height of 280 feet.

There is a nature center with stuffed local animals, including a coyote and a mountain lion, and native plants. The loop can be completed in under an hour, and on summer weekends there are free docent-led walks.

How to get there: Redwood Grove Loop Trail is just south of Felton. Access begins off the Meadow Trail. The trailhead is located in the day use parking lot near the nature center.

What’s Shakin’ on the Loma Prieta Trail in Nisene Marks State Park

The Loma Prieta earthquake of 1989, with a magnitude of 6.9, occurred due to forces along the San Andreas Fault. This fault is a transform boundary where the Pacific Plate and the North American Plate slide past each other horizontally. On Oct. 17, 1989, at 5:04pm, the Loma Prieta earthquake shook the ground from Monterey Bay to the north of San Francisco. It knocked down part of the Bay Bridge, collapsed a section of freeway in Oakland, destroyed much of Santa Cruz’s Pacific Garden Mall and stopped the 1989 World Series. It caused 62 deaths, 3,757 injuries and more than $6 billion in damages.

How to get there: Take the Aptos Creek Trail in the Forest of Nisene Marks State Park. The hike is about 6 miles out and back. It is mostly a gently graded road, the sign marking the epicenter is about 0.6 miles east of the fire road intersection. Dogs are allowed on the trail on leash. Please check the parks.ca.gov website to see if all trails are open. There are trails that lead to ghost towns and picturesque places to picnic along the rivers. If you go in through the main gate, there’s a $10 fee for cars without state parks season

passes. It’s worth it for the variety of hikes, either along rivers or up on top of the hills. It’s one park that never gets old because of all the possibilities.

Cross-Tie walking to the Garden of Eden

This is an amazing place to swim, refresh and restore in the San Lorenzo River. It’s got clear, blue-green water flowing over rocks, into swimming pools, by sandy beaches, all between steep, redwood-covered banks. Some people choose the clothing optional option, no fig leaf required.

If you go on the weekend in warm weather, it will be packed. Any other time, you may find yourself there alone. If it is crowded, you can walk upstream to find your own Eden-esque pool.There are rocks beneath the surface. Please check out where the rocks are before launching your body over the water.

Directions:

The Ox Trail Method: From Santa Cruz, drive three miles up Highway 9, past the South Entrance to Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, until you see the sign for the North Entrance to the park and a large dirt lot to your right with two green metal gates. A sign will say Ox Trail. If you reach Toll House Resort, you’ve gone too far. Enter through the southernmost gate and follow a wide trail down the hill. At the fork, follow the path to the right and continue another quarter mile or so until you reach the railroad tracks. Turn right at the tracks and follow them for about a mile until you see a “No Campfire” and “No Alcoholic Beverages” sign on your left. Follow the steep trail down to the Garden of Eden swimming hole.

The Rincon Way: Stop at the Rincon parking lot, navigate down to the railroad tracks and turn left. This way is about half of a mile of crosstie walking. You will walk over a short trestle with No Trespassing signs, but the train that uses this track crawls along. You can’t see the Garden of Eden from the railroad tracks but look for the famous warning signs at the head of the path down to the pool.

Point Lobos State Natural Reserve

If you want to drive about 45 minutes south, it’s worth it to see Point Lobos State Natural Reserve, which is called the crown jewel of the California State Parks system. Some 600,000 people a year attend, so all the strict rules about staying on the trail make sense. There are paths aplenty and you can walk to almost anywhere in the reserve: the loop around the park is 6.4 miles.
