Open Mic AshBritt responds to ‘Pacific Sun’ fire-cleanup coverage

ast week, the Pacific Sun failed to include important facts when reporting about AshBritt Environmental’s involvement in last year’s wildfire debris cleanup in Sonoma and Napa counties (“Dirty Business,” March 6). Thank you for the opportunity to set the record straight.

AshBritt started as a small, family operated landscaping firm that assisted as a subcontractor in debris recovery efforts in 1992 after Hurricane Andrew. Since then, we have successfully served more than 500 clients and been directly involved in the recovery efforts of more than 60 federally declared disasters in 19 states as a prime contractor. Our work has led to collaboration with many federal and state agencies, including FEMA, CalOES, CalEPA and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). The greatest assurance we can provide is that during our 25 years in the emergency-response industry, we have never failed to complete a project.

Recently, the Pacifc Sun reported that AshBritt and Tetra Tech were listed as defendants in a lawsuit over excavation of properties that were subject to cleanup under the USACE contracts after the 2017 wildfires in Sonoma County. What the paper failed to tell readers is that the same law firm had launched a parallel lawsuit against AshBritt and Tetra Tech, as well as ECC Contractors, for their role in cleanup work in Napa County, and those claims have already been dismissed, specifically against AshBritt.

In the lawsuit reported on last week, AshBritt’s role is limited to work performed on a single property, for which we strenuously deny the claim. In fact, ECC Contractors performed work on the majority of properties in that suit.

ECC is currently one of the prime contractors for CalRecycle’s Camp fire and Woolsey fire in Paradise and Ventura, respectively.

AshBritt maintains the highest levels of safety, quality and integrity in conducting all of our services and operations. In this instance, our work was closely supervised by the USACE and was in strict compliance with its specifications. Furthermore, our excavation is consistent with the work of other prime contractors, and with previous state-managed and supervised CalRecycle debrisremoval projects.

Another misleading item in the Pacific Sun’s reporting is the implication about the company’s relationship with state lobbyist Darius Anderson. The emergencyresponse work mentioned in the article is a federal project for which he had no involvement or role.

Other state contracts mentioned are competitively awarded or were not won by AshBritt. Simply put, he has had no role procuring or representing AshBritt in any of the work cited in the of the Pacific Sun’s story.

AshBritt is proud to have been a USACE contractor, and we stand by our work on the project and that of our over 30 local and California contractors that performed debrisremoval on properties.

Look, in every other human endeavor, in every other important part of your life, results matter! Let me explain it to you, simply. Let’s say that your parents, your grandparents, all of your aunts, uncles and cousins and neighbors and friends all drove, let’s say, Fords.

You bought a Ford. It was a nightmare. It kept breaking down, and breaking down and breaking down. It was so bad that, through the “Lemon Law,” they replaced your car with another Ford, same model. Same thing happened. Would you go out and buy another Ford?

I checked and adjusted my son, Abraham, from when he was 5 minutes old, on! When he was in school with kids his age, and everyone was coughing, sneezing, running a fever, he didn’t get sick. He dropped out of the sixth grade. Abraham started College of Marin at the age of 11, graduated at 14 with four associate’s degrees. Graduated Cal Tech in Pasadena at 17.

Let’s say you went to a restaurant that had 147 five-star Yelp reviews, and was recommended by several friends. You got terrible service, AND got food poisoning. Would you go back?

But you go back to The Doctor, who follows the regular, accepted medical script…goes from recommending over-the-counter drugs, to some useless tests, to prescribing one of the popular prescription drugs, to the next one, to the next one, to sending you to the specialist, for more of the same. All you get is one or more diagnoses, and drugs that only manage your pain or other symptoms, and never get you well. The same script!

I went through it, too. For years, for a seriously unstable low back condition, spondylolisthesis, I existed on Darvon 65 Compound, which was the Oxycontin of that day. It all “hit the fan” when I was just 23 years old. I was bent over in horrible pain, shooting down both legs, beginning to lose control of my bladder. I was facing a surgical fusion, not of the usual two levels, but of my entire lumbar spine. You could see three of my lumbar vertebrae, in the X-ray, kind of hanging out into space.

A friend tried to convince me to go off-script.

It was hard. I was a young med student who “knew everything.” I certainly knew that the kind of doctor he wanted me to go to, a chiropractor, was a witch doctor, a quack. Finally, I was convinced to go. (I was desperate!).

He gave me THE most thorough examination I ever had, X-rayed me, and gently adjusted me. I stood up straight and pain-free for the first time in months! I quit med school and enrolled in chiropractic college.

BIGOTRY and CONFUSION In the end, it doesn’t matter how much you BELIEVE in Medicine. What matters is what is truly scientific, and, even more important, what truly helps you. I was bigoted, back when I was a med student. But then, I learned, and I changed. You can, too. Then… you can get well!

It doesn’t matter if you’ve been to one or more chiropractors who never did a scientific analysis, who never adjusted you, specifically, by hand, and maybe did all kinds of physical therapy nonsense, from hot packs and electrical stimulation to cold laser and disk decompression tables. If a chiropractor attempts to treat your pain (real chiropractors don’t treat anything), and does not adjust to correct nerve interference, you never had actual Chiropractic.

A resident of unincorporated Novato called the Marin County Sheriff to report that he chased a man and woman carrying backpacks from his neighbor’s house.

A deputy located the hooligans and discovered the man had warrants for his arrest. So he was arrested, and his gal pal got thrown in the pokey, too.

The man’s backpack contained an Apple iPad and four laptops, all bearing Novato Unified School District property stickers. Only the most dishonorable zeroes steal from students.

We heard reports of seismic activity emanating from the Marin City Library, but it wasn’t an earthquake; the preeminent Library Journal had recognized branch manager and senior librarian Diana Lopez as an industry mover and shaker.

Lopez plays an important leadership role in Marin City, the county’s most racially diverse and economically challenged community. “I love our community,” she told the Library Journal. “But there are a lot of equity gaps. My branch works hard to close those gaps—especially when it comes to serving our youth.”

The Marin City branch had kept fewer operational hours than others until 2015, when Lopez successfully led the drive to make it the first location to stay open seven days a week.

She champions science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics (known by the acronym STEAM).

“I’m really into promoting STEAM programs, especially for girls and minorities,” she said. “It’s really important to me that kids in this community know they can be engineers, architects and designers.”

The Library Journal credits Lopez with “enhancing basic services, providing opportunities for local teens to develop their technology skills, and offering specialized support for grade schoolers.”

That makes Diana Lopez a hero in our book. We congratulate her on the prestigious award.

San Quentin State Prison has crushed many a soul.

Time and Punishment How California’s broken prison system exacts its toll on families of the incarcerated By Jonah Raskin

R

ussian novelist Fyodor Dostoevsky—who poured his blood, sweat and tears into the pages of Crime and Punishment—would feel at home in John Beck’s splendid, searing new documentary, Invisible Bars, which runs 56 minutes and packs a wallop every step of the way.

“The degree of civilization in a society can be judged by entering its prisons,” Dostoevsky exclaimed.

Jailed by Czar Nicolas I for reading “dangerous” literature, he was lined up before a firing squad and

pardoned at the proverbial last minute. Dostoevsky only served six years in a Siberian prison, a grim yet redemptive experience that fueled Crime and Punishment.

Beck’s Invisible Bars, which he worked on intermittently for five years, suggests that a society ought to be judged not only by what goes on inside prisons, but also by what happens on the outside to kids who suffer the loss of an incarcerated parent.

As Invisible Bars makes abundantly clear, those kids grow

up with the stigma of a mom or a dad locked up in places like San Quentin, on the site where a prison was built in 1850.

Invisible Bars spits out facts as hard and as cold as the walls of San Quentin. California has only 5 percent of the world’s population, but 25 percent of the world’s inmates. In California every year, half a million kids grow up with a parent in prison. In the United States, 5 million kids have parents behind bars.

ilmmaker Beck walked away from his job at Santa Rosa’s Press Democrat in 2009, after

12 years as a staff writer. Since then, he’s made documentaries, including one about ugly-dog contests and another about a Trappist monastery near Chico. Filming Invisible Bars took him to places he had never been before.

Surprisingly, San Quentin wasn’t the prison where Beck heard what he calls the most “honest heartfelt stories.” That was Solano State Prison in Vacaville where he witnessed the workings of the Long Term Offender Program, which aims to rehabilitate and not punish, a rare thing these days.

“When I went to Solano, I never felt unsafe,” Beck says.

“Rather, I knew I was getting a rare opportunity to go behind the curtain and hear real dialogue.”

Last year, Beck joined Fred Stillman’s seven children when they traveled by van from Santa Rosa to Solano—a 90-minute drive—to meet and greet their father, who was released after serving 23 years in prison. Stillman, now 60, and his daughter, Jessica, 32, saw Invisible Bars behind bars at Solano, where Beck arranged for the film to have its world premiere.

“That was heavy, watching the film on the inside with my dad and other prisoners,” Jessica says.

For much of her childhood, Jessica rarely saw her father. When she did, it was through a glass partition. Stillman’s mother raised her. Now, she has a BA from the University of San Diego and an MA from the University of San Francisco.

n a rainy Saturday morning, Stillman—who lives in San Francisco in “transitional housing”— visited Jessica in Santa Rosa, where she works at the Rape, Crisis Trauma and Healing Center.

She’s trying to persuade Sonoma County to adopt a Children of Incarcerated Parents Bill of Rights, similar to Marin’s.

Stillman explains that, over the course of more than two decades, prison authorities moved him from Pelican Bay, where he was in solitary, to Susanville and then to New Folsom, followed by a string of penal institutions in Salinas Valley, Jamestown and Soledad, which was, he says, “a picnic compared to the other places.”

near the start of Beck’s movie, along with the trenchant comment that America is the most “incarcerated country in the world.” More men and women are in prison here than in Putin’s Russia or in any dictatorship in Africa, Asia and South America.

Invisible Bars doesn’t analyze why this country has the world’s most highly developed “prisonindustrial complex”—as critics of the penal system call it. That’s the responsibility of students of crime and punishment, not filmmakers like Beck who want to raise awareness about the epidemic of mass incarceration.

What Beck does exceeding well is put inmates and their children in front of the camera and provide a space for them to talk about their pain, their suffering, their sense of shame and their enduring love that isn’t snuffed out by prisons bars. Beck also showcases two San Francisco public defenders, Jeff Adachi, who died in February, and Chesa Boudin.

At the start of Invisible Bars, Adachi explains, “When it comes to children, the California criminal justice system is cold-hearted.”

Boudin takes over from there. The child of parents who belonged to the Weather Underground, he was raised by Bernardine Dohrn and Bill Ayers after his biological mother and father, Kathy Boudin and David Gilbert, were arrested and jailed following a botched robbery of a Brinks vehicle in 1981. Three men died; two of them police officers.

Gilbert is still in prison. Kathy Boudin was released after 22 years behind bars. Looking back at his traumatic childhood, Chesa says that he blamed himself for the incarceration of his parents. Now he’s running for San Francisco District Attorney to inject justice into the criminal justice system.

Invisible Bars shows how punishing prisons can be on kids like Chesa, but it doesn’t punish viewers. Rather, it uplifts and inspires by showing families as they break down barriers, tell stories and focus their hurt and anger.

Because of kid protesters, Marin County now boasts a Children of Incarcerated Parents Bill of Rights.

hole and my mother thought I was dead,” he adds. It wasn’t until he was housed at Soledad that he was allowed to touch his children and they were allowed to touch him.

“For a long time, I was a monster in prison,” Stillman says. “Then I learned to accept responsibility for my own actions.” He figures it cost the state of California $1,150,000 to “warehouse” him for 23 years. As he points out, the prison-industrialcomplex is big business.

“I almost gave up on myself,” Stillman says. “But my kids never abandoned me, and once I joined the Long Term Offenders Program at Solano, I knew I had a chance to get out.”

One of Stillman’s biggest challenges was juggling gang membership. To survive, he had to join a gang while, at the same time, denying gang affiliation when authorities accused him of membership in one. To guards, who insisted he belonged to a white gang, he replied, “That’s not possible. My mother was Mexican and no white gang would want a Mexican.”

On Aug. 6, 2018, the day Stillman was released from prison, he walked

around Fisherman’s Wharf, admired the Golden Gate Bridge and enjoyed the view of the bay from Sausalito.

When he looks back at the prisons where he was incarcerated, he calls them “evil places.”

D

espite its heavy topic, Invisible Bars has an upbeat soundtrack that includes music by the rap group E-Dub and the Grateful Dead, who performed at San Quentin in 1968, shortly before Johnny Cash sang there.

“Invisible Bars was about as DIY as you can get,” Beck says. “The only way I could make the film was to wear a lot of different hats as cinematographer, editor and sound recorder, as well as writer, producer and director. They all add up to storyteller.”

In the last scene, Stillman faces the camera and says he would still be in prison “if it wasn’t for my kids.”

“It took decades,” Beck says, “but the Stillmans got past the stigma, the shame and the guilt, and rebuilt their family.”

Habeas Birthday Buddhist author and San Quentin death row inmate Jarvis Jay Masters turns 57 in March, and his supporters are marking the occasion with a call for donations to help set up a website for Masters, who has a habeas corpus hearing coming up—possibly as early as this spring, according to the Free Jarvis folks. Masters claims he is innocent of the charge that landed him in San Quentin’s East Tier, where most of the state’s condemned are housed.

In a 2016 interview with the Pacific Sun, the author-inmate spoke of the intense psychological trauma of being held in solitary confinement for decades, awaiting death. “Spiritual grounding is a real, real enduring force if you ever find yourself in a situation like this,” he said through the bars.

During recent years there have been defections by many exceedingly high-ranking Synanon officials, including former president Jack Hurst, attorney and philosopher Howard Garfield, regent Bill Crawford, and Jim O'Donnell, former head of the Santa Monica facility.

“We began to play hardball rather than tiddlywinks,” answered [Synanon spokesman John] Kaufman. “We began to not brownnose the press; we began to fight back. Those individuals you mention came to Synanon when Synanon wasn’t doing that.”

This explanation is precisely the one offered by the high-ranking defectors—with one critically important difference. The defectors say Synanon turned to violence.

Who says you can’t beat city hall? The outraged bellows of Marin conservationists scared the State from leasing the Marin portion of San Pablo Bay for oil and gas wells. And now the State has backed WEEK down on its plan to turn Angel Island into Disneyland North.

Dropped from the revised plans are a huge marina, auditorium, covered swimming pools, shops and hotel facilities. The State is even willing to leave out Tiburon as an embarkation point for the island. That’s a nice hot issue for Tiburon residents and merchants to fight over.

‘High Fidelity’ First up, one of the most recognizable faces in movies for the last 30 years, John Cusack comes to Santa Rosa to screen and discuss his hit comedy High Fidelity on March 15 at the Luther Burbank Center for the Arts.

The story of record shop owner Rob Gordon (Cusack) recounting his top five failed relationships is set against a backdrop of over 70 pop songs spanning multiple decades and genres of music; the film has become one of the most beloved romantic comedies for music and film lovers alike. Cusack not only starred in the movie, he co-wrote and co-produced it, bringing the novel by Nick Hornby to life.

“I had made a bunch of films with Joe Roth, who ran Disney,” says Cusack. “And I had just made the first film I wrote and produced called Grosse Pointe Blank. We had a really good experience, and we had a big soundtrack on that movie.

Kathy Nelson, who was the music supervisor, was a real wizard.”

After the success of Grosse Pointe Blank, Cusack turned to High Fidelity and brought Nelson along for another music-centric film. But this time, the music took on a physical role, with Cusack and his friends

( Jack Black and Todd Louiso) hanging out in a record shop and debating various top five lists like “Top five recording artists” and “Top five musical crimes perpetrated by Stevie Wonder in the ’80s and ’90s.”

High Fidelity also told a compelling story about love and relationships, as Rob attempts to figure out where he went wrong in the past and fix his current romantic situation, while also reorganizing his record collection autobiographically.

“I’m not as much of a collector in person, but I certainly value music the same way,” says Cusack of his character. “A lot of people live autobiographically through art, and they have albums and songs and movies that mean something to them in their life, when they first heard the song, or the era of the song. Those themes run close with me.”

High Fidelity was also the breakout role for Jack Black, whom Cusack recruited for the part. “I knew we had an ending to the film because I knew Jack and had seen his act Tenacious D in Los Angeles,” says Cusack. “I knew the part was perfect for him and that he would be able to knock ’em dead with the music at the end. We had a ball.”

Beyond being one of the most

entertaining movies about music ever, High Fidelity captured an audience through the relatable characters and emotional narrative.

“It tells a lot of secrets about men, our inner monologue and thought processes,” says Cusack.

On hand for the screening and conversation, Cusack looks forward to the chance to talk with fans of the film.

“What we usually like to do is take questions directly from the audience,” says Cusack, who has toured with other films. “They’re into the movies and know them well. I like to take questions and let them ask whatever they want.”

Tiburon International Film Festival There is a good reason why the Tiburon International Film Festival, running April 12–18, is known as the United Nations of cinema. The event is dedicated to understanding cultures and people throughout the world through the medium

of film. Since 2001, the festival has showcased independent film selections from across the globe, and this year’s 18th annual lineup includes films of every genre from nearly 30 countries.

Several special programs highlights this year’s TIFF, starting with a tribute to comedian, singer, actress and television star Kaye Ballard, whose career has spanned eight decades. The tribute includes a screening of the documentary, Kaye Ballard: the Show Goes On!, directed by Dan Wingate, who will be present at the screening on April 13. Another legend receiving the tribute treatment is classic Hollywood director William Wellman, who is saluted with a screening of his original 1937 film A Star Is Born and a discussion with his son, William Wellman Jr., who will share his memories of his legendary father on April 14.

TIFF also hosts a Marin filmmakers program on April 15 and a Bay Area filmmakers showcase on April 17, each screening a collection of shorts from local filmmakers who will be on hand for Q&A session.

International selections include Hungarian film Eternal Winter, the first feature film about the 700,000 Hungarian victims of the WWII Soviet labor camps, and Iranian film Amir, from promising first-time writer and director Nima Eghlima.

DocLands Documentary Film Festival Formed in 2017 and hosted by the California Film Institute, DocLands Documentary Film Festival is a relative newcomer to the film festival scene in Marin, though it has already made an impact with its compelling, thoughtful film program and its non-competitive, non-juried and inclusive atmosphere. Beyond the festival, happening May 2–5 throughout Marin, Doclands is a great tool for filmmakers, as two signature programs from 2018 return for the 2019 festival. DocPitch is designed to connect filmmakers and their works-in-progress to distributors, funders, nonprofit organizations, philanthropists, fellow filmmakers, and future audiences. DocTalk will again provide a platform for local

and visiting filmmakers to share with fellow filmmakers their tips and techniques for working in an ever-changing industry.

While film selections for this year’s event are yet to be announced and individual tickets go on sale in early April, the festival’s past selections have included films addressing climate change and sustainability as well as films about overcoming obstacles and celebrating the human spirit. Both come to light in one film Doclands has announced for this year, The Weight of Water, directed

by Michael Brown and starring renowned mountain climber and kayaker Erik Weihenmayer, the first blind person to reach the summit of Mt. Everest. The film follows Weihenmayer’s navigation of the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon in a kayak. Both Brown and Weihenmayer will be on hand for a special reception benefiting Environmental Traveling

Companions before the film screens on May 4.

‘Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan’ Finally, San Rafael takes to the stars in a big way when it welcomes iconic actor, writer and director William Shatner to town for a conversation to accompany a screening of the best Star Trek movie ever, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, on May 16 at the Marin Center.

In revisiting his beloved character of James T. Kirk, captain of the starship Enterprise in both the original 1966 Star Trek television series and then in seven feature films, the first thing that Shatner points out is that the character almost didn’t exist.

another actor,” says Shatner. “And they couldn’t sell it, but the idea was intriguing enough. A very unusual and maybe unique event took place; NBC said make another pilot with a different script and recast everybody except the guy playing the Vulcan [Leonard Nimoy].”

So it was, and the role of Captain Pike was changed to Captain Kirk.

Shatner was called in to read the new part. “I thought they took themselves a little too seriously and I suggested that we have more fun with it,” he says. “I had, the year before, done a film on Alexander the Great and I was riding horses, wearing a breechcloth and doing weight training. So I had an idea of what a hero might act like, and I kept thinking of a phrase I had heard somewhere, ‘the look of eagles.’”

Taking all that, Shatner created an archetype in science fiction, the brash but brave Captain Kirk, who fights for his crew and for the good of all. Though the original series lasted only three short years, the crew of the starship Enterprise would return in 1979 for the first of several feature films. Those films also famously spawned many other television series that continue to this day, not to mention books, video games and other media.

In revisiting the character of Captain Kirk in the movies, the actor approached Kirk as an older, wiser captain. “I began to look more closely on how an aging hero, who is one step slower, might act and feel,” says Shatner. “And on the loneliness of having an inanimate ship as the love of his life. There were many strains of things that I didn’t comprehend or look at when I was playing him on television.”

While 1979’s Star Trek: The Motion Picture garnered mixed reviews, the

sequel became a smash hit with critics and audiences. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan is in fact a sequel to an episode from the original series, “Space Seed,” in which the superhuman Khan is revived from suspended animation and attempts to capture the Enterprise. That episode ends with Khan and his crew being exiled to a planet, where we find them at the beginning of the 1982 film.

“Somebody knowledgeable said, ‘Let’s get back to the series,’” says Shatner of Wrath of Khan. “The stories were the important part.

So when they said let’s do a story instead of running-and-jumping, I thought that was the right way to go. And it turned out to be a success because we did that.”

As the title points out, Khan makes his wrath known in the movie, and as portrayed by the late Ricardo Montalbán, Khan is considered one of Star Trek’s greatest villains. The film concludes with not only one of the most memorable yells in cinema history (“Khhaaaan!”) it features Shatner, Montalbán and Nimoy all giving world-class performances.

“Leonard was a wonderful actor, everything done so internally, and a great gentleman and wonderful friend,” says Shatner. “The best of acting is a tennis game between the actors, and there’s this playful thing that should happen. If it’s there, it becomes alive; even if the dialogue isn’t necessarily sparkling, actors can bring it to life if they bring themselves to life, and these guys were able to that.”

Pilgrimage, this year’s theme at the Geography of Hope, is a tool for breaking down barriers.

Sacred Land The Geography of Hope Conference converges in West Marin By Aiyana Moya

I

n 1998, big-city community organizer Steve Costa and his wife, Kate Levinson, moved to Point Reyes Station, and in 2002 bought the town’s only bookstore. Though neither had retail experience, they knew bookstores could serve as a catalyst to bring community members together, and Point Reyes Books became entrenched in the community by holding lectures and public discussions in addition to author signings.

In 2008, with the help of a few local Marin County residents, Costa and Levinson organized the first Geography of Hope Literary Conference, a weekend-long event with authors and educators from around the world. Since then, Geography of Hope has been producing annual events with different themes, though always with an emphasis on human interactions with the environment.

For Claire Peele, longtime attendee to the events, it’s the

combination of accredited speakers and the emphasis on nature that hooked her the first year, and which has brought her back every year since. The conference brings “people from all over the country, influential thought leaders, including some indigenous leaders,” she says. “We are given pathways to think about and discuss our relationships to each other and nature.”

This year, Geography of Hope reexamines the importance of

pilgrimage as a way to deepen our relationship to nature, putting on events running throughout 2019. On March 16, the group hosts Pilgrimage Redefined, a conference featuring authors, activists, educators and others who have incorporated pilgrimage into their interaction with nature.

One speaker presenting is John Francis, famously nicknamed the Planetwalker for his trek across America.

“I wasn’t really an environmentalist until after the second oil spill in San Francisco in 1971,” Francis says. That year, he decided to give up using any motorized transportation. On his birthday, he took it a step further and decided to not speak for a day.

“This continued every day for the next 17 years,” says Francis. “Being silent for me was learning how to listen. It was about how we treat each other.”

During Francis’ duration of silence, he undertook a pilgrimage across America, sailed to South America, got his PhD in environmental sciences, and learned how to play the banjo.

He began seeing environmental problems as the consequence of social inequalities. “I believe now that environmental problems are based in human rights, gender equality and all the other ways we relate to each other,” he says.

“As long as we are exploiting each other for resources, it is not going to get better.”

Speaker Kate Bunny will discuss how a pilgrimage can be used as a tool for social change. Bunny led a pilgrimage from Israel to the West Bank, bringing Israelis into areas they typically would not be allowed. “Pilgrimage is a very simple practice,” she says, “and in that time you are breaking down a lot of barriers between each other that can build particularly during conflicts.

“You get a sense of equitability, because you are all the same, you are all sweating, and you can find ways to relate.”

Habit Forming Hand Habits open latest tour in Bolinas By Charlie Swanson

T

here was a time when Hand Habits was reserved for the bedroom. That’s where guitarist and songwriter Meg Duffy would craft melodic homespun folk songs when not working as a touring musician.

“It started with me just writing songs, and it went through a lot of different outfits,” says Duffy. With a rotating cast of collaborators and a slew of attempts at different sounds, Duffy and Hand Habits first debuted in a self-recorded album, Wildly Idle (Humble Before the Void), in 2017.

Now, Hand Habits has solidified from a solo project into a full band with the release of Placeholder, the excellent new record that the group plays from when performing on March 22 at the Bolinas Community Center with Alex Bleeker and friends.

For the new record, Duffy went into the studio and emerged with 12

songs of guitar-driven melodic indierock that continues to establish the bandleader as a premiere guitarist and confident narrative songwriter.

“I always write the songs for a full band,” says Duffy. “I like playing solo now that I can with more confidence, but I much prefer playing with a band.”

Opening with the strong title track, Placeholder is largely an album about relationships. Yet within songs about breakups and heartache, Duffy explores deeper realms of internal struggles with anxiety or confusion, as well as identity and self-discovery, giving the record a welcome gravitas throughout.

“There’s a lot of gray area in human nature,” says Duffy. “When someone doesn’t understand something, I think they can be afraid of it rather than embrace it or hold it against something that they do understand.

“And for music, everybody is so quick to define anything as a genre or in relation to another artist so they can understand it, and that’s a beautiful thing, but it can also be really limiting.”

In terms of songwriting, Duffy excels as a storyteller crafting both the ambiguous and the embellished. “That interests me, living in the in-between areas,” the performer says.

Duffy was also interested in opening the band’s upcoming tour in West Marin, where they’ve played before.

“I really think it’s a beautiful place,” says Duffy. “I thought it was a good way to start the tour, rather than having a big L.A. show. It will more low-key and familial.”

After a skirmish, Vers is captured by the MARINJCC.ORG/ARTS pointed-eared Skrulls. Her dormant

memories are stirred up during an interrogation by their diabolical leader, the Australian-accented Taros (an amusing Ben Mendelsohn).

Vers falls to earth like a comet into 1990s North Hollywood. The ruckus summons America’s top secret agent Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson, digitized to a younger form and still possessing both eyes). The corpse of a dead Skrull convinces Fury of Vers’ story. As they try to round up the aliens, the jagged bits of Vers’ past keep flashing back: she recalls her former life as an air force fighter pilot and her lifelong friendship with her fellow pilot Marie Rambeau (Lashana Lynch).

It’s a little dismaying to see the great flamboyance of Jackson dimmed down—he’s a younger man, a just-the-facts military officer who hasn’t yet seen the aliens at our door, a soldier from WWII coming back from the dead and the race of Homo superior yet. But he takes to Vers.

Larson and Jackson have a smooth rapport. If Larson brings in a great deal of feeling to the role, she also brings

some playfulness. Our heroine can be slightly bratty, pestering Fury at a bar about why he thinks everyone should call him by his last name—an echo of all the raffish word-bandying that went on in Pulp Fiction. “And what will your kids call you?” “Fury.”

Despite some starchy Louisiana heartland sequences, this is an effective fantasy of power used with grace and without arrogance. Captain Marvel isn’t as supermacha as GI Jane or Starship Troopers, however; the movie is not about Vers becoming a good, disciplined soldier. She finds her independence at last.

When Captain Marvel is over, one notes that a conventional romantic lead isn’t here, and also wasn’t missed.

Directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, and the five credited writers give this heroine’s journey the same attractive solitude that male heroes— super and otherwise—have enjoyed in the movies forever.

Dramatic Mouthful College of Marin pulls off the unconventional ‘Skin of Our Teeth’ By Harry Duke

I

n late 1942, when our country was a year into World War II, Thornton Wilder’s The Skin of Our Teeth opened on Broadway. Wilder, whose Our Town dramatized the lives of one small community over a period of 12 years, expanded his sight a bit with a play that covers all of human existence as experienced by a single, suburban New Jersey family.

The show opens in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Antrobus (Steven Price and Christine Macomber), who reside there with their two children and their maid, Sabina (Nina Point Dujour).

The family is desperate to keep their home fire burning because, you see, a glacier is overtaking New Jersey. Soon, the family is breaking up anything in the house than can be burned to save their lives, the lives of their pet dinosaur and wooly mammoth, and a bunch of refugees they’ve let into the house, including Homer and Moses.

Confused yet? Well, that’s just the first act.

The second act takes us to Atlantic City, where Mr. Antrobus has just been elected president of the Ancient and Honorable Order of Mammals, Subdivision Human. He wishes to run away with bingo parlor hostess/newly elected Miss Atlantic City Lily Sabina Fairweather (also Dujour) and end his 5,000-year-old marriage. A great flood intervenes, but thankfully there’s a big boat nearby with room for the Antrobus family—and two of every creature.

Got it now? Well, the third act takes us back to what remains of the Antrobus home after the conclusion of a seven-year war. Mr. Antrobus has lost the will to start over, having done so for millennia. Will humanity survive?

Of course it will, as we circle back to the beginning of the show because, as Sabina tells the audience, “the end of this play has not been written.”

Director Molly Noble has her hands full with Skin of Our Teeth, as unconventional a piece of theater as one could imagine, and she pulls it off.

Characters addressing the audience, Biblical references, anachronisms strewn freely throughout, stopping mid-play for additional rehearsal— Wilder seems to have thrown everything in but the kitchen sink.

Ah, but there was a method to his madness and Nobles’ large cast of local theater veterans and College of Marin students honor the playwright’s not-as-absurd-or-as-longas-it-sounds vision. Might a message of optimism in the face of repeated disaster and the indomitable human spirit resonate with audiences today?

‘The Skin of Our Teeth’ runs through March 16 at the College of Marin James Dunn Theatre, 835 College Ave., Kentfield.

Q:

I’m a 32-year-old gay man, and my boyfriend of three years sometimes vents to his friends about our relationship. I feel a little betrayed by this—like my privacy’s being violated. Why can’t he figure things out on his own—without bringing in a jury?—Disturbed

A:

A few years back, a woman with a grudge against my assistant called me to try to get me to fire her: “She talks trash about you!” Me: “Everybody talks trash about their boss!”

The truth is, we all do a lot of grousing to others about people in our lives—our romantic partner, our business partner, our criminal conspirator. That’s actually a healthy thing, though it runs contrary to what emotion researcher Bernard Rime calls the “Lone Ranger individualist perspective of adult emotional regulation.” This, Rime explains, is the mythic view (held even by many psychologists) that healthy adult processing of emotions involves a sort of “rugged individualism”—meaning being “self-contained, independent and self-reliant.”

In fact, Rime notes, emotion seems to have evolved to be not just an internal, solo process but a “fundamentally interdependent process.” Rime explains that our emotions—especially painful ones—can be overwhelming to us. Experiencing emotion “is a dense and diffuse experience in need of cognitive articulation”; that is, it needs to be hashed out and understood. “By using language and by addressing others, individuals ‘unfold’ the emotional material” so they can understand and manage it and maybe gain objectivity and insight.

Understanding how driven we are to share our experiences might help you stop feeling like your boyfriend’s betraying secrets and instead see it as his seeking a sounding board. There’s a good chance that this serves to improve your relationship—sometimes by confirming that he has a legit issue to discuss with you and try to resolve.

Of course, we’re all prone to latch on to crazy and ride it like a pony. We need someone to talk sense into us—like to convince us that the jail time isn’t worth it, despite our partner’s disgusting, depraved indifference to all that’s good and right. Yes, I’m talking about atrocities like opening food packages from the middle (“Hello, are you a rodent?!”) and vacuuming in weird, random lines (like a serial killer!).

Q:

I’m a 66-year-old man. I got married in my mid-20s. I was totally faithful, but my wife left me after 10 years (I think for another woman). I was with the next woman for 20 years. Again, I was faithful, but she left me, too. Is being faithful overrated? I thought it was the way to secure a relationship.—Failed Relationships

A:

It isn’t a surprise that you’d go, “Wait, faithful to the first one, faithful to the next one—must’ve been why these relationships tanked!” This leap you’re making probably comes out of how uncomfortable our minds are with uncertainty (stemming from ambiguous situations, unanswered questions and other mental untidiness). According to research by cognitive neuroscientist Michael Gazzaniga, a mechanism in our brain’s left hemisphere that he calls “the interpreter” steps in to fill in the blanks, to save us from the cognitive chaos by coming up with an explanation.

Unfortunately, it’s like the world’s sloppiest detective. It quickly scans for any patterns or vaguely plausible meanings and then just goes with them—creating a narrative that seems to make sense of our experience.

A more productive take would be accepting that relationships end and considering whether there’s anything you might have done better, both in picking partners and in being one.

You might also reconsider the notion that you had “failed relationships.” The reality is, partners change and grow apart. They come to want conflicting things (like a wife perhaps wanting a wife of her own). Or they just get bored with each other. As I see it, a 10- or 20-year relationship is a feat to celebrate—not only making a relationship work for a whole lot of years but refraining from bludgeoning your mate for the horrible, psyche-scraping sounds they make when they chew.

I suspect that in a somewhat similar way, you may be perceived as being too much something for a role you would actually perform quite well. But in my astrological opinion, you’re not at all too much. In fact, you’re just right. Is there anything you can do—with full integrity—to adjust how people see you and understand you without diluting your brightness and strength?

VIRGO (August 23–September 22) In 1993, an English gardener named Eric Lawes used his metal detector to look for a hammer that his farmer friend had lost in a field. Instead of the hammer, he found the unexpected: a buried box containing 15,234 old Roman silver and gold worth more than $4 million today. I bring this to your attention, Virgo, because I suspect that you, too, will soon discover something different from what you’re searching for. Like the treasure Lawes located, it might even be more valuable than what you thought you wanted.

LIBRA (September 23–October 22) “The role of the artist is exactly the same as the role of the

thousands of generations, our early ancestors were able to get some of the food they needed through a practice known as persistence hunting. They usually couldn’t run as fast as the animals they chased. But they had a distinct advantage: they could keep moving relentlessly until their prey grew exhausted. In part that’s because they had far less hair than the animals, and thus could cool off better. I propose that we adopt this theme as a metaphor for your life in the coming weeks and months. You won’t need to be extra fast or super ferocious or impossibly clever to get what you want. All you have to do is be persistent and dogged and disciplined.

CAPRICORN (December 22–January

AQUARIUS (January 20–February 18) Essayist Nassim Nicholas Taleb says humans come in three types: fragile, robust or antifragile. Those who are fragile work hard to shield themselves from life’s messiness.

The downside? They are deprived of experiences that might spur them to grow smarter. As for robust people, Taleb believes they are firm in the face of messiness. They remain who they are even when they’re disrupted. The potential problem? They may be too strong to surrender to necessary transformations. If you’re the third type, antifragile, you engage with the messiness and use it as motivation to become more creative and resilient. The downside? None. In accordance with the astrological omens, Aquarius, I urge you to adopt the antifragile approach in the coming weeks.

PISCES (February 19–March 20) In 2014,

NASA managed to place its MAVEN spacecraft into orbit around Mars. The cost of the mission was $671 million. Soon thereafter, the Indian government put its own vehicle, the Mangalyaan, into orbit around the Red Planet. It spent $74 million. As you plan your own big project, Pisces, I recommend you emulate the Mangalyaan rather than the MAVEN. I suspect you can do great things—maybe even your personal equivalent of sending a spacecraft to Mars—on a relatively modest budget.

Fall Prevention: A Matter of Balance

n 83-year old man who had to give up skiing because he was afraid he couldn’t get back up again if he fell.

A woman, uprooted from the Midwest to live with her daughter, whose class participation gained her not only valuable information but some new friends.

A couple who took the class together so as to help and motivate each other.

An 80-plus woman so enthusiastic with what she learned she decided to go on as a volunteer coach to others.

These are just a few of hundreds of Marin County seniors, ranging in age from 65 to 90, even 100, who have taken positive action toward improving their health and quality of life as they age by participating in an award winning falls prevention class called A Matter of Balance, available at multiple locations around Marin County.

Falls affect more than one out of four older adults in the U.S. every year and sends three million of them to the ER for treatment. In addition to broken bones and other injuries, falls are the leading cause of traumatic brain injuries and hip fractures among this population.

At Marin General Hospital, injuries from falls are the number one reason people come to the ER. An injury from a fall, even if not as major as a brain injury or hip fracture, can make it hard for an older adult to resume everyday activities. Many never return to their own homes again,

but go to assisted living communities or nursing homes.

Falls can happen to anyone. Hazards exist in our homes and in our environment.

Many falls happen during routine activities. Aging may bring challenges such as diminished vision and decreased strength in legs and arms. Some medications can cause dizziness or affect balance.

Even taking into consideration these multiple risk factors, all which can increase one’s chance of falling, one of the most significant is in our heads — the fear of falling, especially if one has fallen before.

Recent studies show that up to half of older adults living in the community have a fear of falling and respond by curtailing their activities.

This then becomes the fear of falling cycle.

The more we fear that we will fall, the less active we become, leading to a loss of muscle strength and balance, two of the main reasons we fall in the first place. A life limited by fear of falling decreases our confidence in our ability to prevent falls in the first place.

their concerns about falling and learn coping strategies to reduce them. They also set goals for increasing their activities while staying as safe as possible, do problem solving about what changes to make at home to reduce fall risk and learn simple strength and balance exercises to practice with the group. One practical takeaway from the class, enthusiastically mentioned by many participants, is being shown how to land more safely should a fall happen and how to get up from a fall, or even just the floor.

Data from the classes so far shows 60% of participants showing improved balance, 66% improved strength (sit to stand test), 29% increasing their walking and exercise and 39% saying they no longer have the same concerns about falling. Many attendees report feeling less alone in their fears and encouraged and motivated by the group. Many say their world has gotten wider because they can now feel safer outside their homes; a typical goal among many is to resume activities they love such as walking outdoors and hiking.
