Why Do They Keep Coming to This Doctor?… (who admits to curing no one) Dear Friend, I wanted to let everyone know what happened while I was in college. It was a moment that changed my life forever. But before I tell you about my experience, I wanted to tell you my story from the start.

Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter, I’m the guy in the middle, Dr. Taatjes.

Now for my kids, Hayden and Henry.

Shocked What a shock it is that District Attorney Jill Ravitch took a pass (“Legal Lockdown,” Oct. 14). I'm sure ever since she faked her investigation of Eric Gelhaus, she will double down from now on. Those local defense attorneys must have been pretty sure these allegations had meat on ’em to get attorney Izaak Schwaiger involved. I bet if the attorneys with huevos in the area did a little digging, they'd find a can of worms at that jail.

Waves Not Wine Our coastal hills need stronger protections from the permitting of industrial enterprises such as wineries on roads too small, water too scarce and the environment too fragile to accommodate more development.

Emergency services cannot deal with the tourism as it is on the coast so rezoning and allowing more wineries on our scenic coastal hills is a big mistake.

Supervisor Efren Carrillo wrote recently in defense of the Local Coastal Program, that there are only 3 acres planted in grapes on the coast and no wineries, yet the advertising at the Sonoma County Airport claims there are 500 acres on the coast already and wineries from where you can see the ocean. Whom is he trying to fool (or whom is he working for?) with this mumbo-jumbo? I say expand the protections for our precious Sonoma County Coast and don't allow any more wineries to take root on hillsides where they don't belong. It's time we separate alcohol producing viticulture from food producing agriculture. We need a Neil Young song about this stuff.

Senate Bill 350 Where do we go from here?

I

t was supposed to be three big 50s: 50 percent doubling of energy efficiency in buildings, 50 percent of our electricity power mix coming from renewable energy sources and a whopping 50 percent reduction in petroleum use in transportation—all by the year 2030. That was the ambition of Senate Bill (SB) 350, authored by Senators Kevin de León and the Bay Area’s Marc Leno.

Near the end of the legislative session, under heavy lobbying and statewide negative ad campaigning from the fossil fuel industry, the 50 percent petroleum reduction component was removed.

It might be argued that two out of three ain’t bad. The process of achieving the two remaining provisions will undoubtedly spur innovation and investment in a sustainable California economy, improve public health and reduce greenhouse gases. And Gov. Brown and other proponents have indicated there is still plenty of enthusiasm in Sacramento for achieving the petroleum reductions through executive, regulatory and other means.

But here’s the deal. The 50 percent reduction in petroleum use by 2030 is coming. Battery-powered electric vehicles and the charging stations for them are already available, affordable and practical; fuel cell electric vehicles and the fueling system for them are also emerging rapidly. The fall of the fossil empire will come about from a combination of new laws and regulations that tilt the playing field toward renewables and the rise of superior technologies that help us end our fossil dependency. The gasoline-powered internal combustion engine has had a good 100-year run, and the time for it to go is upon us, legislation or no.

There are already over 2,000 petroleum-free electric vehicles on the road in Sonoma County and about four new EVs are purchased here each day. For buyers of EV vehicles, it’s already 2030 and a visit to the gas station is a thing of the past. Who will be next? Inn Decisions Plans for Sebastopol hotels in flux

P

lans for a chic hotel at The Barlow appear to have hit an obstacle while plans for another tony hotel nearby are moving forward as Sebastopol tries to ramp its tourist-tempting profile as the so-called “Gateway to Bodega.”

ahead with plans for a hotel on the site of the Sebastopol Tractor Co., designed by San Francisco architect David Baker.

The Bohemian reported earlier this year on the plans, then in their pre-infancy. At the time, The Barlow hotel proposal had already started to gain steam. The Piazza planners had a public meeting to take input from residents in September and plan to have another next month.

the lot and it’s for sale at $3 million, according to the building’s current tenant. Basso told the Bohemian back in January that he wanted to redevelop the site, but couldn’t then say whether a hotel was the preferred option. Ten months later, a hotel appears to be the preferred option.

Piazza group sales and marketing executive Circe Sher says her company is working quickly to secure support for the hotel from

Sebastopol residents and officials.

The plan is not locked in, she says, but her company is “very interested in this location.”

Time is of the essence, Sher says. “We need to go hard on the project by next March. That’s when we have to make a firm deposit on the property. By then we’d want to know if we are moving forward on the project.”

The proposal has yet to be put before the Sebastopol City Council or planning commission, and a councilman gives the Piazza people credit for taking the temperature of Sebastopol residents and incorporating their suggestions into the proposed design before coming before the city.

That effort will go a long way when the proposal comes before the Sebastopol City Council for review. “It increases the likelihood that the public is going to support the project,” says councilman and former Sebastopol Mayor Robert Jacob, “and with public support, that’s a great advantage.”

Meanwhile, over at The Barlow, plans for a hotel were nixed over concerns that it would be constructed on a floodplain, a zoning no-no. The plan called for tearing down the warehouse-like Guayaki yerba mate building and replacing it with a hotel. In that scenario, the Guayaki business would be relocated.

A Press Democrat story from early August asserted that the plan was moving ahead despite the zoning snafu, and notes that Barlow owner Barney Aldridge, who did not respond to requests for comment on this story, was working to find a new home for Guayaki. Aldridge told the PD back then that he’d be submitting a new plan to the city within two weeks.

Two months later: no plan. “There’s no item before the city council, and the planning commission hasn’t even discussed it,” says Jacob.

For that reason, Jacob’s uncertain about whether the revised Barlow plan will happen at all on that site.

“I believe the hotel at The Barlow is not happening,” Jacob says.

The councilman is certain that downtown is ready and in need of a hotel, maybe more than one.

Blowing It The city of Sonoma’s hot-button topic right now doesn’t seem to be the drought or a local housing crisis that ďŹ nds more vacation rentals than long-term ones—it’s leaf blowers.

A group of community members is ďŹ ghting to outlaw the blowers, a move undertaken by a handful of wealthy California towns already— including Mill Valley. Sonoma Neighbors Against Leaf Blowers (SNALB) says there are dangers beyond the annoying noise, including the release of pollution spewed by gas-powered blowers. “You would be very surprised by how many people all over Sonoma are negatively impacted by leaf blowers,â€? says SNALB’s Sarah Ford. “A lot of people who work from home are prevented from getting their work done.

The noise and dust and emissions are huge quality of life issues.�

Two councilmembers recently voted in support of the ban; two opposed it. Councilwoman Rachel Hundley was the deciding factor. She couldn’t deliver a vote, and her indecisiveness pushed the drama to its next phase: The council will vote to put a measure on the 2016 ballot and let voters decide.

Blower proponents have raised the specter of racism: Would a workforce of primarily Latino landscaping workers lose their income if these infernal machines were banned? Oh please says opponent Dan Ponicson. “Successive councils have been bullied into believing the economic issues. Ultimately, the problem persists because of people who believe the appearance of their driveway, in concert with cheap labor, is more vital than the health and well-being of their neighbors.�

Waldron Landscape, the largest landscaper in Sonoma, wrote a letter to clients this summer to inform them of a ban’s catastrophic impact. “If you want your landscape maintained with brooms to the same standard as it was by the blower, your costs will go up.‌ If you keep your monthly

rate exactly where it is now, your landscape will simply be a little less tidy. We will put in our usual time and even work a little harder because a push broom takes more elbow grease to use.� —Sarah Stierch

General Hospital News Windsor resident and veteran intensive care nurse Steve Elkins popped by the Bohemian ofďŹ ce on a recent afternoon with a petition making the rounds. The issue: property taxes collected in Windsor that go to Healdsburg Hospital—a community facility that Elkins says sees scant use from Windsor residents.

The petitioners say that upwards of $150 a year is collected from Windsor residents to support a hospital that, Elkins says, “nobody uses in Windsor.� More than $1 million is directed by Windsor to the Healdsburg Hospital a year, but residents there in need of hospital or emergency medical care are far more likely to go to Sutter or Kaiser in Santa Rosa. Those hospitals are closer to Windsor residents, says Elkins, 95 percent of whom “do not seek any hospital or emergency services from Healdsburg Hospital,� according to the petition. The petition seeks to cleave Windsor from the North Sonoma County Healthcare District.

The Windsor petition makes the rounds as another community hospital in our midst struggles to re-open—and is reportedly hemorrhaging $1 million a month as it sorts out its pharmaceutical software snafu. The latest news from the still-waiting-to-reopen Sonoma West Medical Center, the former Palm Drive Hospital in Sebastopol, is that nobody’s sure when it will open. Having previously jumped the gun on a hopeful note of hospital-open optimism, this paper has adopted a “we’ll believe it when we see it,� editorial posture.

Sebastopol, he says, is a hospitable place that lacks for sufficient hospitality services. There are just two motels in town, the Sebastopol Inn and the FairďŹ eld Inn and Suites. “For us to have the opportunity for a non-chain, non-formula hotel with a proven track record, to be proposing opening a hotel in our downtown corridor, is a blessing for us,â€? Jacob says, referring to the Piazza Group, which operates the h2 and Hotel Healdsburg in Healdsburg.

Chris Mann is chairman of the board at Guayaki and says Aldridge is proceeding with his plan to build a hotel at the business’s current site. His operation is looking for a new home, hopefully in Sebastopol.

Mann says he’s surprised that Aldridge hasn’t yet approached the city with his revised plan, but notes that “it’s a complicated and expensive process, and there’s lots of new development already going on at The Barlow.�

Of the two hotels currently in the offing, he adds that downtown needs all the rooms it can get, and that a green-light on one hotel doesn’t necessarily rule out the other. Both plans ought to be supported as they move forward, he adds, given that “neither is a slam dunk.�

The backdrop here is the changing economic landscape of Sebastopol. In short, the apples are gone and tourism is the new core economy, along with cannabis and parking tickets. Sher says that the idea is to build a hotel that reects the town’s agricultural history. That translates into lots of open green space and other natural stuff.

Sher was also curious about the goings-on at The Barlow. As well she should be, given that the prospect of two boutique hotels in near-proximity to one another may jump the swank shark, even in a town that’s supportive of increased hospitality services.

Indeed, Sher notes that the Piazza plan originated in part from a recent Sebastopol civic push to “bring visitors to town and have a connection between The Barlow and downtown—that’s what we are going off of.�

Owner Sue Grixti, a charming woman with a bold tattoo of a lotus and a Buddhist mantra, is an Oxford, England, native who moved to Sonoma County five years ago.

Her calm and collected demeanor make sense when she says her

profession is a midwife. She still works the occasional night shift at Sonoma Valley Hospital.

“I got a bit disillusioned with the healthcare system,” she says casually, “so my sister, who owns a few tea shops in the U.K., suggested we open one here.”

Grixti’s sister wanted to open a classic “hoity-toity” tea shop, but it wasn’t Grixti’s style. The compromise is part tea shop, part coffee shop, part British grocery store. Union Jack flags, Beatles records, London Tube

memorabilia and a Sex Pistols flag serve as decorations—and landmarks of cultural pride. A humble refrigerator holds housemade sausage rolls and pre-made sandwiches, which can be also ordered fresh. Among the British lunchtime classics (marked with a flag sticker) are albacore tuna and chicken on multigrain.

Condiments include Sarson malt vinegar and Branston pickles, a chutney-like pickle mix available in the grocery section.

A couple of shelves are dedicated to imports from the U.K.: clotted cream fudge, Digestives cookies, jams

by Wilkin & Sons and Mrs. Darlington’s, the love-them-orhate-them spreads Bovril and Marmite, lemon curd, pickled onions and mint cucumber pickles, steak and kidney in a tin and other curious items.

“We mold the variety [based on] requests from customers,” Grixti says. Customers are “older British people who come here to meet other British people,” as well as “people who have been to the U.K. or suddenly discovered some British roots.”

A special spot on the counter is saved for British desserts, relying heavily on the iconic and nostalgic: jam tarts, scones, Bakewell tartlets and syrup cakes share space with the layered trifles in the fridge. These go well with fresh ginger lemonade or a pot of “London Fog” tea.

“I couldn’t bake to save my life before it all began,” jokes Grixti.

Now she makes the sausage rolls, scones and jam tarts in house. The rest of the desserts come fresh from Britain, made by bakedgoods brand Mr. Kipling.

In the near future, she plans to offer British newspapers and magazines and host lectures, bringing the local Brits and their fans even closer.

“I do miss Britain,” she admits.

“There’s something about the people.”

And the food. That “something” is very present at 2 London Foodies.

ndiscriminate and cunning at once, artful wine makes the witless more so, even as it loosens the most rigorously trained mind. Seduced by its siren song away from the service of Asclepius, see how they fall, grinning widely, into the bawdy lair of Dionysus.

Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a fanciful synopsis of winemaker Marc Krafftâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s circuitous path to founding Orpheus Wines in 2011, anyway. Krafft (pictured) joined the Navy at age 17, and later signed on with the Army National Guard Reserve while completing university work in microbiologyâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;with a minor in dance. While taking some time off to travel and think about the future, he got to talking to an apprentice winemaker on the train from Amsterdam to Paris. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d had no idea that winemaking was a career one could just choose. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I thought you had to be born into it!â&#x20AC;? he says.

Later, while working in the dimly lit underworld of the hospital lab, he began his winemaking career by moonlighting in, of all places, Illinois wine country. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It has its own challenges,â&#x20AC;? Krafft says.

Today, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll find him in his Kenwood tasting room, when heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not working in the two vineyards he leases, experimenting in limiting water use and environmental impact with cover crops and by spraying vines with ozone instead of the usual fungicides. Krafft and his wife, the wineryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s chief â&#x20AC;&#x153;visioneer,â&#x20AC;? Rachel Friedman, take their triple principles of community, artistry and sustainability seriously: they live in community co-housing, and switched vendors for printing organic inks on their wine bottles when they found one that could do the job with a smaller carbon footprint.

The spacious, cleanly styled tasting room functions dually as an art gallery, with wire sculptures (the originals of each wine label design) by artist Steve Lohman on permanent display.

I like the nutty intrigue of the 2013 Viognier ($20), which plays up the varietalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sweet orange notes more than stone fruit. Also an individual, the rich 2013 Sonoma County Sauvignon Blanc ($18) charms with tarragon and lemongrass notes. Filled with boysenberry goodness, the 2013 Bacigalupi Vineyard Zinfandel ($42) is a solid Russian River Valley Zin, showing depth without heat. From a grape thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s unrelated to â&#x20AC;&#x153;moscato,â&#x20AC;? the 2013 Orange Muscat ($26) wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t ready to be put to bed when it was bottled, waking up with bubbles in the bottle: the flavorful, frizzante wine makes an irresistible music of its own.

Forest for the Trees Coastal redwoods battle heats up along Gualala River BY WILL PARRISH

T

he fight to save majestic coastal redwood groves in California has been waged for more than a century, starting with the campaign that created Big Basin State Park in 1902.

In 1978, the Sierra Club dubbed its successful campaign to expand Redwood State and National Park the “last battle” of “the redwood war,” but the battles to protect this

globally recognized icon of nature would only intensify.

In 1985, a junk-bond dealer named Charles Hurwitz engineered a hostile takeover of Humboldt County’s most respected logging company, Pacific Lumber, and folded it into Houston-based investment company Maxxam. Meanwhile, Louisiana-Pacific, a GeorgiaPacific spin-off, was cutting its more than 300,000 acres in Mendocino and Sonoma counties

at roughly three times the forest’s rate of growth.

“We need everything that’s out there,” Louisiana-Pacific CEO Harry Merlot told the Press Democrat in 1989 “We log to infinity. Because it’s out there and we need it all, now.”

This unruly phase of the story involves the birth of radical environmentalism on the North Coast, complete with tree sits and road blockades, and culminates in the campaign to

save the largest remaining area of unprotected old-growth redwoods in California, and thus the world: the Headwaters forest, located between Fortuna and Eureka.

President Bill Clinton made saving Headwaters an election pitch in 1996, and in 1999 the state and federal governments purchased 7,500 acres to establish the Headwaters Forest Reserve.

This year, a new redwood battle has emerged, this time in northwestern Sonoma County.

s founder of a statefunded watershed history database known as the Klamath Resource Information System, which covers most of northwestern California, Arcatabased fisheries biologist Patrick Higgins is a leading expert on the historical impacts of logging along the Gualala River. While growing up in the 1960s, he made frequent fishing trips to the river, describing it as “a veritable Shangri-La for fishermen.”

“Nothing in the last 10,000 years, probably a million years, has ever duplicated the degree of disturbance in the Gualala River watershed as has occurred since World War II,” Higgins says.

To understand what he means, it’s necessary to go back to the arrival of European Americans on the West Coast, and also to become acquainted with the unit of measurement that represents a forest’s potential financial value in

that the agency that reviews timber harvest plans (THPs), the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire for short), to order that Dogwood and Apple be resubmitted due to reported administrative errors.

Meanwhile, Sonoma County’s regional parks district has eyed the area as a possible river park site for more than 50 years, while a consortium of conservation groups is seeking to buy the land and create a “working community forest” characterized by a lightertouch approach to logging.

There are other elements of this story that recall past redwood battles. Earlier this year, the property was purchased by the Burch family of San Jose, whose West Coast timber franchise spans three states and variously goes under the names Redwood Empire and Pacific States Industries. To tell this tale fully, you also have to mention a man named Henry Alden, who, as GRT’s forestlands manager, designed the Apple and Dogwood plans.

Certainly no stranger to sagas of upheaval and controversy in redwood country, Alden was Maxxam’s lead forester in the late nineteen-nineties as it sought to fell the Headwaters forest.

Gualala Redwoods Timber (GRT), owner of 29,500 acres in northwestern Sonoma and southwestern Mendocino counties, plans to log hundreds of large second-growth redwoods in the Gualala River’s sensitive floodplain. The “Dogwood” plan encompasses 320 acres, making it the largest Gualala River floodplain logging plans in the modern regulatory era, while the “Apple” plan features 121 acres of adjacent logging and 89 acres of clear-cuts.

Project critic Peter Baye, a coastal ecologist affiliated with Friends of the Gualala River and a former California Department of Fish & Wildlife regulator, says the style of logging GRT has planned is liable to batter the watershed’s badly impaired “off-channel” salmon and steelhead habitat.

He also fears it will jeopardize endangered species such as the marbled murrelet and northern spotted owl, and set a dangerous precedent that erodes the intent of modern environmental statutes that are supposed to protect floodplains.

“This is basically the last mature riparian forest refuge in the watershed,” Baye says. “All of the 80- to 100-year-old trees in the watershed are gone, except these.

And it’s in the critical part, next to the river and in the floodplain.

Nothing else impacts salmon like this does.”

Defenders of the plan include the state regulator who signed off on the logging proposal.

“It may be a larger floodplainlogging plan than most others, but the Gualala River also has a uniquely wide floodplain,” says Jim Burke, a North Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board hydrologist who OKed the plans in an agency review process earlier this year. “After looking at it, we determined that the plan meets our requirements.”

The outcry from environmental organizations, including Friends of the Gualala River and Forests Unlimited, as well as more than 80 public comment letters by local residents, has led to an intervention by State Sen. Mike McGuire and U.S. Rep. Jared Huffman. The lawmakers asked

lumber, known as “board feet.”

At the time of Euro-American settlement on the West Coast, the board foot volume of coastal redwood forests averaged 100,000 to 150,000 per acre, according to estimates by biologists. Exceptional stands, such as those that grow in rich alluvial soil deposits in areas like floodplains, contained more than one million per acre (enough to build about 50 houses with five rooms each).

But the settlers quickly sought to capitalize on the enormous forests stretching around them.

The government seized lands from native peoples without compensation and converted them to private property through giveaways and auctions. From the Gold Rush through the early 1920s, settlers hacked half of the

original redwood population, with a big chunk of that wood going to rebuild San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake. At the turn of the 19th century, 100 percent of redwood forestland was privately owned.

By the 1990s, the board-foot volume of Louisiana-Pacific’s heavily cut-over Mendocino and Sonoma county properties averaged a paltry 10,000 per acre—less than 10 percent of their original volume. Environmental activists and some foresters have embraced the term “liquidation forestry” to describe LouisianaPacific’s practices, which remained prevalent in most areas of redwood country well into the 1990s, and continues to be practiced in some areas.

been clear-cutting, which involves razing every tree in a large swath, an ecological trauma that perhaps only a tsunami or volcano can match. These methods, critics say, allow big timber companies to get their money out of the forest as quickly as possible while rapidly degrading the forest and yielding less revenue and fewer wood products over the long-term.

The Gualala River watershed includes the redwood-studded mountains above Fort Ross, Stewarts Point, the Sea Ranch and the town of Gualala. LouisianaPacific owned 7,000 acres of the watershed, which have been purchased by Mendocino Redwood Co., a firm owned by the billionaire Fischer family, owners of The Gap. Willits lumberman Rich Padula, owner of a 79,000-acre tract spanning the Gualala and Garcia river watersheds, took liquidation forestry the furthest in the watershed, diminishing his lands to less than 4,000 board-feet per acre before attempting to convert a large portion of his holdings to wine grapes.

Before the Burches purchased their land in March it was known as Gualala Redwoods Inc. (GRI).

GRI’s owner has degraded its lands but not to the same extent as Padula. But the company has drawn criticism from environmentalists for its rapid cutting rates and reliance on clear-cutting.

According to a 2010 Cal Fire report on sustainable forest management, the average annual California timberland harvest covers 1.64 percent of private timberland acres.

By contrast, GRI’s total logging since 2004 has covered about 30 percent of its land, which translates to a harvest rate of nearly 3 percent per year—almost twice the state average.

Company representatives contend that their logging practices are not environmentally harmful and deny that they have had a detrimental impact on the watershed. They point to road upgrades that reduce soil erosion into streams, as well as stream restoration work they have conducted in collaboration with

a group called the Gualala River Watershed Council.

“Harvest of coastal redwood and Douglas fir actively occurs today, but with substantially improved practices,” the Dogwood timber harvest plan states. “While some areas of the watershed experienced more improvement than others, an overall trend toward improvement. . . was observed.” ot long after I met Friends of the Gualala River president Chris Poehlmann outside of Gualala Point Regional Park in August, he pulled glass display cases of live termites gnawing on chunks of wood out of the trunk of his 1982 Mercedes Benz—which he converted to run on vegetable oil.

Poehlmann, who lives in Annapolis and builds museum displays for a living, constructed his first live display a few years ago for the California Academy of Sciences.

He soon discovered that the much-maligned wood-consuming

insect makes an effective prop for promoting his sense of wonder about the natural world.

“When people hear about termites, they don’t initially have them in a category of something they are interested in,” says Poehlmann, a soft-spoken but articulate man in his 60s, “But when they find out how interesting termites are, and that they play a vital role in ecosystems by recycling waste material, it helps awaken them to the importance of preserving biodiversity in a completely new way.”

Poehlmann got his start as a forest advocate when GRI sprayed jellied gasoline (aka, napalm) on land they had clear-cut just beyond the eastern edge of the Sea Ranch in 1989, prompting a surrounding section of forest to catch fire. The idea was to clear brush to give sunlight to the new redwood seedlings that would be planted. Alarmed by these practices, Poehlmann started his work monitoring and critiquing

timber havests in the area and joined with Friends of the Gualala River soon after.

A timber harvest plan (THP) serves as a scaled-down version of an environmental impact report.

Members of the public can file comments on THPs, but only certain agencies, not individuals, can appeal them under state law.

Poehlmann and others began working to oppose GRI’s logging plans based on what they saw as cumulative impact on the Gualala River ecosystem.

There is no escaping the inexorable judgment of weather and time. Every year, the rain renders its verdict on historic logging activities in watersheds like the Gualala. By removing vegetation that anchors hillsides, and constructing spider-web road patterns, logging causes erosion that contributes to the degradation of rivers and fish habitat. Sediment smothers fish eggs and disrupts the reproductive cycle. Fish, especially salmon and steelhead, require

these organizationsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; â&#x20AC;&#x153;working community forestsâ&#x20AC;? approach and the idea of a riverside park.

County parks Acquisition Director Steve Ehret would not reveal the terms of the bid they offered but called it a â&#x20AC;&#x153;very competitive offer.â&#x20AC;? In the end, the Burch familyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bid won out. ecause the Burch familyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s company is privately held, information about them is difficult to come by. The Burches rarely grant interviews, and Sean Burch, the companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s general manager, did not respond to several requests for comment on this story. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been in this area for a while, but we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know a lot about them,â&#x20AC;? Ehret says.

A review of background materials, including county assessor records, provides a thumbnail sketch. Company patriarch Roger Burch, who lives in Morgan Hill, worked as a police officer in San Mateo County in the 1960s before making it big in timber. He wound up the owner of timberland spanning ďŹ ve California counties, and three mills. Among them is the conspicuous Cloverdale redwood mill at the intersection of highways 101 and 128. PaciďŹ c States Industry is the parent company and Redwood Empire is its California division.

Apart from its new Gualala holdings, the company owns redwood and Douglas ďŹ r timberland throughout northwestern Sonoma County.

According to data from the Sonoma County Permit and Resources Management Department, 63,178 acres in the county are currently zoned for timber production. Now that they own GRT, the Burches own more than a quarter of that.

But the companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s battles with environmentalists have almost exclusively occurred in Santa Cruz County. In an area above Watsonville, called Gamecock Canyon, they logged some of that countyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s only remaining unprotected old-growth and, as a California Superior Court would later rule, illegally used a residentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s easement road ) 20

pools where they can rest and feed.

Erosion ďŹ lls in those crucial pools.

In 1998, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency listed the Gualala River watershed as â&#x20AC;&#x153;impairedâ&#x20AC;? due to excessive sediment under the Federal Clean Water Act. The EPA stated that â&#x20AC;&#x153;signiďŹ cant reductions in humaninduced erosion are needed to protect aquatic habitat and cold water ďŹ sh.â&#x20AC;?

The EPA later listed the watershed as impaired due to elevated temperatures.

In the 2000s, the Conservation Fund, a land trust based in Virginia, purchased Padulaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s former Gualala and Garcia river lands, tens of thousands of acres of young-growth redwood and ďŹ r in the coastal mountains. This free market, nonproďŹ t experimentâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;â&#x20AC;&#x153;working community forestsâ&#x20AC;?â&#x20AC;&#x201D;calls for limited, sustainable logging as the land slowly recovers.

The Fund now owns more than 57,000 acres of contiguous forest in the Gualala and Garcia river watershed, and their land abuts Gualala Redwoodsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; propertyâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; in a suggestive manner, say environmentalists. Partly as a result of these purchases, the Garcia River, which is directly north of the Gualala and roughly the same size, â&#x20AC;&#x153;has been slowly recovering from its years of damage from logging,â&#x20AC;? says Alan Levine of Coast Action Group, an environmental organization in Point Arena.

Through their involvement in these efforts, North Coast environmentalists have quietly built a legacy of successful conservation campaigns that equal or exceed any other part of redwood country. When GRTâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s former owner, New Orleans-based physician Ollie Edmunds, put the land up for sale earlier this year, many were hopeful that the Conservation Fund would once again emerge with the land.

The Sonoma Land Trust joined the Conservation Fundâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s consortium, as did Sonoma County Regional Parks and other entities. While the environmental groups are not affiliated with the organizations trying to buy the land, they are supportive of of

to haul logs in the process. A more harrowing incident occurred in 2002, when a tree sitter named Brian Connolly, 31, plunged to his death while occupying a tree Redwood Empire later logged in an area called Ramsey Gulch.

“When they first got here they were just awful,” says Jodi Frediani, long-time forestry consultant for the Central Coast chapter of the Sierra Club.

One flare-up came down in environmentalists’ favor. For eight years, a small grassroots campaign delayed the company’s plans to log 425 acres in the headwaters of a creek near Big Basin State Park north of Santa Cruz. The Sempervirens Fund eventually purchased that land for $5.6 million and set it aside in a conservation easement. In an interview, the local resident who led that campaign, Kevin Collins, said that “Redwood Empire never seemed especially concerned about negative publicity, unlike a lot of other logging companies.”

Redwood Empire’s largest landholding is actually in Mendocino County, where it bought 45,000 acres of cut-over former LouisianaPacific land above the remote town of Covelo for $300 an acre in the late-1990s. Their immediate neighbor happens to be former Cal Fire director Richard Wilson, 81, a prominent environmentalist who is also a forester.

“Roger’s been a good neighbor up here,” Wilson says. “He is basically sitting and waiting for the timber to come back.” erhaps nobody knows more about the politics of liquidation logging than Wilson. A Republican appointed by then-governor Pete Wilson, he was the director of Cal Fire from 1991 to 1999, the decade when the Humboldt timber wars burned the hottest. He also helped craft the 1973 California Forest Practice Rules, designed to strengthen protections against streamside logging and compel timber companies to harvest selectively, with something called “maximum sustained

production” of timber in mind.

As the Headwaters forest became a flashpoint of protest, the subject of sustainable logging became a household topic. In response, Cal Fire started requiring that timber companies file 100-year management plans for sustaining merchantable timber stands in their forests, called “sustained yield plans.”

In 1999, federal and state monies were used to purchase the 5,600-acre Headwaters tract for a whopping $532.27 million in cash and assets—more than half of the roughly $850 million in inflation-adjusted dollars Hurwitz had paid for his acreage as a whole.

As a condition of the sale, Maxxam was required to receive Wilson’s approval of its sustained yield plan. The cut rate that Hurwitz and the federal politicians eventually agreed on was 179 million board-feet per year for the first decade after the signing. The number was based on a computer model created by a private Redding-based company named Vestra Resources.

Wilson could not get his hands on the report, although he directed the most important timberregulating body involved in the deal. Pacific Lumber later claimed the report was proprietary.

A decade later, Wilson and a Cal Fire forester named Chris Maranto brought a whistleblower suit against Hurwitz and Maxxam, alleging that Hurwitz had falsified the sustained yield plan to facilitate the Headwaters sale and to enable the ongoing liquidation logging of its land.

The lawsuit against Hurwitz, which included the state and federal governments as plaintiffs, was finally heard in 2009 in Oakland. On the stand, Maranto described how he had discovered the deception several years after the fact. The annual cut rate that Hurwitz consented to in the government negotiations—179 million board-feet—was based on a particular number of trees.

But on the acreage he surveyed, Maranto didn’t find anything close to the number of redwoods the company had

The plan, located

in the exact same area where the Dogwood THP is proposed, was on track for approval until the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) sent a lette2 2001 to Cal Fire in 2001 opposing the plan.

NMFS biologist Charlotte Ambrose wrote that the ďŹ&#x201A;oodplain logging plan would â&#x20AC;&#x153;not provide adequate protection for federally listed salmonids which feed, rear, shelter and migrate in the complex ďŹ&#x201A;oodplain ecosystem.â&#x20AC;?

She added, â&#x20AC;&#x153;There is continuous sediment input from road use and maintenance and a demonstrated rate and type of harvest in the watershed since 1988 that is a concern to the NMFS.â&#x20AC;?

The Board of Forestry and Fire Protection, a nine-member board appointed by the governor that composes the policymaking branch of state forestry, rejected the plan. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rare for an agency to appeal a THP and rarer still for the board to uphold it. Timber industry representatives make up three members of the board, a livestock representative ďŹ lls one seat and a California Forestersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Association typically ďŹ lls another.

Until Huffman and McGuire intervened, GRTâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s much larger current ďŹ&#x201A;oodplain logging plan passed through the regulatory process without opposition from regulators. â&#x20AC;&#x153;These two proposed projects could have signiďŹ cant impacts on Gualala Point Regional Park and the Gualala River watershed,â&#x20AC;?

McGuire wrote in an email. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is whyâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;after requests came in from Sonoma County Regional Parks and organizations out on the coastâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;we brought county and community leaders together to discuss concerns with the state agencies. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re grateful for the conversation and for Cal Fire, who will be recirculating the timber harvest plans.â&#x20AC;?

Dan Wilson, acting North Coast branch supervisor for NMFS, says there are two differences regarding his agencyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s position on GRIâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s previous plans and GRTâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s current one. One is that Cal Fire has strengthened its watershedprotection guidelines, called the Anadromous Salmonid Protection Rules, which ostensibly strengthen protections ) 22

told the government it had. He soon learned that PaciďŹ c Lumber had included a second tree in its computer modeling for all of its holdings: tan oaks, which are almost never used to show marketable inventory because theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re more like weeds in the eyes of the timber industry.

Plaintiff witness Paul Harper, of the ecosystem consulting ďŹ rm Baldwin, Blomstrom, Wilkinson & Associates, said this on day six of the trial: â&#x20AC;&#x153;The level of growth thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s achieved at the end is what dictates what you can cut right now in the ďŹ rst decade of the planning, so the result was that it allowed a much higher cut in the beginning because it was projecting that much higher growth near the end.â&#x20AC;?

Hurwitzâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s legal team never denied that the company had used tan oaks in the stocking reports; they simply argued that doing so was legal, and that Hurwitz had no personal knowledge of the situation.

After six days, the plaintiffs decided the Bush administrationâ&#x20AC;&#x201C; appointed judge had put too many limits on what they could enter into evidence, so the odds werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t good that they would convince nine jurors the tan-oak situation was a scamâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;and that it came from the top. Wilson and Maranto settled for $4 million from PaciďŹ c Lumber, which was distributed among the plaintiffsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; law ďŹ rm and the state and federal government.

Exhibits from the trial reveal that the PaciďŹ c Lumber employee who worked most directly with Vestra Resources to prepare the suspect sustained yield plan was Henry Alden, the forester in charge of the current THPs along the Gualala River.

Alden has declined multiple requests to comment for this story.

Trees ( 21 of endangered ďŹ sh. The other is that GRT is doing more to mitigate its potential damage to streams, â&#x20AC;&#x153;especially by placing wood in streams to help create spawning pools and shelter for ďŹ sh,â&#x20AC;? he says.

This time, his agency has declined to comment on the plan.

A 200-foot buffer between the river and logging area is also required, but the ďŹ&#x201A;oodplain is much wider than that in many places. According to Baye and other critics of the THP, recent science on salmon survival and recovery emphasizes the critical importance of ďŹ&#x201A;oodplains and assigns a reduced role to woody debris.

The proposed THP areas have not been logged since the adoption of modern environmental legislation in the early-1970s. Scouring winter ďŹ&#x201A;oods have periodically rushed through the river canyons, naturally thinning the lush forests and giving the groves an expansive, cathedrallike appearance reminiscent of other redwood parks such as Prairie Creek Redwoods, or even parts of Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve.

RT and PaciďŹ c States Industries declined to comment for this story, so the best available representations of their perspective are in the Dogwood and Apple plans themselves. In the Dogwood plan, overseen by Alden, argues that scuttling the logging plans would only defer the felling of ďŹ&#x201A;oodplain trees to a later time, while forcing the company to harvest an equivalent volume of timber somewhere else. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The only way to avoid the impacts would be to never harvest any of the alluvial ďŹ&#x201A;ats [i.e., the ďŹ&#x201A;oodplains] on the land, which the landowner is not willing to do,â&#x20AC;? the plan states. â&#x20AC;&#x153;By harvesting elsewhere, any potential impacts would not be altogether avoided, but would be shifted to another location.â&#x20AC;?

For his part, Sonoma County Parks planning director Ehret is enthusiastic about an expanded Gualala River Redwood parkâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; even if the logging will continue

on land adjacent to the park. â&#x20AC;&#x153;People donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t always realize that, as time marches, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s some opportunities you never get back,â&#x20AC;? he says.

Amy Chesnut, acquisitions director of Sonoma Land Trust, says her organization took part in negotiations with the previous owners, as part of the conservation consortium that attempted to buy the property, and that she would â&#x20AC;&#x153;jump at the opportunityâ&#x20AC;? to negotiate with the Burches. The idea is that the Conservation Fund and other conservation groups would complete the largest contiguous area of nonproďŹ t working forestland in the history of the redwood region.

When the Burches purchased the property, the harvest plans were already queued up, but Alden waited until after the purchase went through to submit them.

The Dogwood THP addresses the possibility of selling the landâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;a move some observers see as a negotiating ploy. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The landowner is optimistic about the future value of this timberland and would be unwilling to consider selling it at current fair market value,â&#x20AC;? the plan states. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It would be unlikely for a public agency to be able to offer more than fair market value.â&#x20AC;?

Yet GRTâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s previous owners showed interest in selling the property to the public agency. A draft of the 1999 Sonoma County general plan noted that the â&#x20AC;&#x153;owners of Gualala Redwoods proposed to make available to County Parks the opportunity to construct and operate a loop trail that could be moved by logging operations as required.â&#x20AC;?

Poehlmann is more pointed in his remarks than McGuire and other parties with concerns about the logging plans. â&#x20AC;&#x153;GRT is looking to clean the last meat off the bones of this watershed,â&#x20AC;? he says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But if this community is smart, theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll realize this is their big chance. With some help we can set this land aside and economically uplift this entire region by creating a truly remarkable park.â&#x20AC;?

T

he internet can be regarded as a giant general store, ready to cater to our wildest desires.

But should you look for a handmade, designer rag doll for a girl who deplores anything pink, frilly or girly, Google will raise an eyebrow, and then give you Jess Brown, a Petaluma designer who pretty much dominates this niche category.

Brown’s daughter Stella, now 17,

was such a girl, drawn to gray and black and admiring Coco Chanel when she was all of three years old. To accommodate her daughter’s taste, Brown, then a preschool teacher, took to designing and creating rag dolls, with a twist: she made them lanky and elegant, and equipped each with a stylish outfit.

Fast forward to 2015, and the dolls are an international sensation. Brown ships to Dubai and London, and even collaborates with couture fashion labels.

“I wanted my daughter to have everything handmade, and there was nothing sophisticated for kids,” says Brown in her Petaluma Mill studio. “I wanted a doll she could play with, but made out of beautiful materials. She would come antiquing with me, and we’d find vintage fabrics and design the doll’s clothes.”

Ten years ago, Brown helped open Mod, a children’s clothing store in Petaluma, where the dolls made their debut. The pattern came together after a challenging

process. Manufacturers told Brown the skinny, fragile hands and legs will be difficult to stuff and sew. The face was even tougher.

“I wanted the eyes to twinkle, and the mouth took forever,” Brown recalls. “A smile didn’t work, the color [of the lips] couldn’t be red or pink.”

The result is a sophisticated, almost enigmatic look on the doll’s face that appears friendly from one angle and nonchalant from another.

In her studio, dolls in feathers, printed dresses and dainty headpieces share space with an all-female staff of five. “We’ve established a pretty good fan base,” says Brown. “Our clients are anyone from a brand-new baby to 80-year-old women, and pretty sophisticated shoppers who appreciates craftsmanship and are interested in design.”

About half of the dolls are sold for children’s playthings and the rest become stylish home accessories, she says. The prices range from $100 to $234.

The fashion element is strongly present in Brown’s work. Like a designer, she issues four collections a year: spring and fall for smaller dolls; holiday and summer for larger ones. Each collection has a clothing theme, a hairpiece style and a color scheme.

During New York’s Fashion Week in 2012, Brown collaborated with the Italian fashion powerhouse Bottega Venetta to create life-sized dolls that appeared in the windows of the brand’s flagship stores in Milan and Paris. This month, she’ll collaborate with the San Francisco children’s boutique Peek Kids on a series of limited-edition dolls dressed in outfits matching pieces from the kids’ collection.

clothes if they could, so three years ago, with no formal education in fashion design, Brown started making womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s clothes. With nothing more than a good eye and the help of a pattern maker, she was motivated to recreate some of the pieces in her antique clothes collection. Unlike some of the more elaborate dolls, the dresses and blouses are reserved and muted, created from gray and beige linens and wools, with rare explosions of fuchsia. Often, Brown uses scraps from the womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s garments to make the dollsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; tiny jackets and skirts.

While her clothes are sold in a small number of boutiques across the country, the dolls have sold worldwide: Australia, China, Japan and numerous European countries.

But Brown is perfectly content with basing herself in Petaluma.

Cinnabar delivers an uneven retelling of ‘Frankenstein’

n Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, as everyone knows, a creature is assembled from dead body parts and granted the spark of life. In Trevor Allen’s The Creature—a daring, artful, but ultimately problematic adaptation—the playwright puts Victor Frankenstein’s creation process in reverse, taking the original story apart and reassembling it into something similar, but entirely different.

Like Victor Frankenstein’s infamous original science project, it’s a bold idea that almost works, but ultimately goes more than a little bit wrong.

As directed by Jon Tracy—mixing up a meta-theatrical cocktail of misty atmosphere and sheer

guts—Allen’s poetically minimalist take on the 1818 novel uses little more than three chairs, a snowy slab of white, a journal and a trio of actors. Eschewing special effects, action scenes and monster makeup, the three barefooted narrators of Shelley’s 1818 novel—Victor Frankenstein (Tim Kniffin), Captain Walton (Richard Pallaziol), and the Creature (Robert Parsons)—all take turns telling their side of the story, rarely moving or even interacting, as they spin together a long string of beautiful but oft-tangled words.

Unlike the novel—a tale within a tale within a tale—Allen places the narratives side by side, with the narrative bouncing back and forth like a ping-pong ball, every sentence or two. Confusion and exhaustion are just some of the by-products of the playwright’s fiendish experiment. Even worse, by breaking each man’s tale into such tiny fragments, the power of Shelley’s original story is almost entirely diminished, literally smashed to pieces.

As Walton, the ship’s captain who discovers Frankenstein near the North Pole and takes his deathbed confession, Pallaziol is quite good, and Kniffin, as the dying mad scientist, nicely captures the lastgasp desperation of the character, but his delivery becomes one note, flat and cold.

The Creature, played by Parsons, brings an impressive sense of wounded dignity to the role of an abandoned child, but Allen goes too far in trying to make the character sympathetic, even altering the details of the Creature’s various murders.

In a deliberate deviation from Shelley’s text, Allen turns each murder—including the calculated act of framing an innocent woman for one of the deaths— into a regrettable but mostly unintentional accident.

Despite the best intentions, the play turns out to be less than the sum of its parts.

with keyboardist and vocalist Burrows co-writing original songs with guitarist Dilbeck. Over time, the groupâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sound expanded, and about ďŹ ve years ago, Burrows says the band honed its focus. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We asked ourselves, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;What could we add to the band?â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;? says Burrows. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We grew up listening to Sons of Champlin, stuff like that, so we said, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s add some horns.â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;?

In fact, Frobeck added three horns, courtesy of Alex Scammon, Alex Garcia and Cayce Carnahan, as well as the powerful pipes of vocalist Callie Watts. All was looking up until the band lost founding drummer Jonathan Lazarus to suicide in 2013. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was a huge loss,â&#x20AC;? says Burrows. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We were all so taken aback by it.â&#x20AC;?

Frobeckâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Sea of Truth, their ďŹ rst album since the drummerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s death, is dedicated to the memory of Lazarus, who the band calls their fallen brother. The title of the record sums up Burrowsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; reďŹ&#x201A;ections in the aftermath of that loss. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;sea of truthâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; is this idea that the truth is a vast, huge thing, much bigger than us, and it can either be a beautiful thing or it can be tragic,â&#x20AC;? says Burrows. Despite its heavy undertones, the album is anything but somber, as Frobeck bursts out of their past for a robust, upbeat and vivacious collection of songs.

Now eight members strong, Burrows says the band is moving forward and stronger than ever, musically and emotionally.

Frobeckâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s newest members, bassist Ben Burleigh and drummer Paul Spina, are both monster musicians, says Burrows. And last year, the band celebrated as Watts and Dilbeck tied the knot. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It always feels special when we play together,â&#x20AC;? says Burrows. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This band is the best thing Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve ever done, and I know Kris would say the same.â&#x20AC;?

Edgy, dark, funny and more than a little unsettling, Lucky Penny’s deliriously twisted production of Rajiv Joseph’s Gruesome Playground Injuries is not the kind of thing most theatergoers expect when they sit down for an onstage love story.

Propelled by the bold notion that psychologically unhealthy people sometimes fall in love, too, this demented contemporary comedy—directed with a sense of wit and compassion by Barry Martin—will not be everyone’s cup of tea; but those eager for strong, new theatrical voices and an un-fuzzy outlook on love will find that this one delivers, and then some.

The two-actor show features married performers Ben Stowe (excellent) and Katie Kelley (giving one of her strongest-ever performances) as screwed up, sufferingaddicted friends who meet as eight-yearolds in the school nurse’s office (she has a chronic stomachache; he just rode his bike off the roof and tore open his face).

Skipping back and forth in time, we meet them at various points in their lives, each scene anchored by an injury, each scene’s interval—during which we watch them change costumes and apply vivid wound make-up—underscored by a clever playlist about how much love and life hurt, and how we (sometimes) survive it with our bodies and hearts more or less (but not always) intact.

TAURUS (April 20–May 20)

One of the largest machines in the world is a “bucket wheel excavator” in Kazakhstan. It’s a saw that weighs 45,000 tons and has a blade the size of a four-story building. If you want to slice through a mountain, it’s perfect for the job. Indeed, that’s what it’s used for over in Kazakhstan. Right now, Taurus, I picture you as having a metaphorical version of this equipment. That’s because I think you have the power to rip open a clearing through a massive obstruction that has been in your way.

GEMINI (May 21–June 20) Filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock did a daily ritual to remind him of life’s impermanence. After drinking his tea each morning, he flung both cup and saucer over his shoulder, allowing them to smash on the floor. I don’t recommend that you adopt a comparable custom for long-term use, but it might be healthy and interesting to do so for now. Are you willing to outgrow and escape your old containers?

Would you consider diverging from formulas that have always worked for you? Are there any unnecessary taboos that need to be broken? Experiment with the possible blessings that might come by not clinging to the illusion of “permanence.”

CANCER (June 21–July 22) Terence was a comic playwright in ancient Rome. He spoke of love in ways that sound modern. It can be capricious and weird, he said. It may provoke indignities and rouse difficult emotions. Are you skilled at debate? Love requires you to engage in strenuous discussions. Peace may break out in the midst of war, and vice versa. Terence’s conclusion: If you seek counsel regarding the arts of love, you may as well be asking for advice on how to go mad. I won’t argue with him. He makes good points.

But I suspect that in the coming weeks you will be excused from most of those crazy-making aspects.

The sweet and smooth sides of love will predominate.

Uplift and inspiration are more likely than angst and bewilderment. Take advantage of the grace period!

Put chaos control measures in place for the next time Terence’s version of love returns.

LEO (July 23–August 22) In the coming weeks, you will have a special relationship with the night. When the sun goes down, your intelligence will intensify, as will your knack for knowing what’s really important and what’s not. In the darkness, you will have an enhanced capacity to make sense of murky matters lurking in the shadows. You will be able to penetrate deeper than usual, and get to the bottom of secrets and mysteries that have kept you off-balance. Even your grimy fears may be transformable if you approach them with a passion for redemption.

VIRGO (August 23–September 22)

New friends and unexpected teachers are in your vicinity, with more candidates on the way. There may even be potential comrades who could eventually become flexible collaborators and catalytic guides. Will you be available for the openings they offer? Will you receive them with fire in your heart and mirth in your eyes? I worry that you may not be ready if you are too preoccupied with old friends and familiar teachers. So please make room for surprises.

LIBRA (September 23–October 22) More than any other sign, you have an ability to detach yourself from life’s flow and analyze its complexities with cool objectivity. This is mostly a good thing. It enhances your power to make rational decisions. On the other hand, it sometimes devolves into a liability. You may become so invested in your role as observer that you refrain from

diving into life’s flow. You hold yourself apart from it, avoiding both its messiness and vitality. But I don’t foresee this being a problem in the coming weeks. In fact, I bet you will be a savvy watcher even as you’re almost fully immersed in the dynamic flux.

SCORPIO (October 23–November 21)

Are you an inventor? Is it your specialty to create novel gadgets and machines? Probably not. But in the coming weeks you may have metaphorical resemblances to an inventor. I suspect you will have an enhanced ability to dream up original approaches and find alternatives to conventional wisdom. You may surprise yourself with your knack for finding ingenious solutions to long-standing dilemmas. To prime your instincts, I’ll provide three thoughts from inventor Thomas Edison. 1. “To invent, you need a good imagination and a pile of junk.” 2. “Just because something doesn’t do what you planned it to do doesn’t mean it’s useless.” 3. “Everything comes to those who hustle while they wait.”

SAGITTARIUS (November 22–December 21) Some unraveling is inevitable. What has been woven together must now be partially unwoven. But please refrain from thinking of this mysterious development as a setback. Instead, consider it an opportunity to reexamine and redo any work that was a bit hasty or sloppy. Be glad you will get a second chance to fix and refine what wasn’t done quite right the first time. In fact, I suggest you preside over the unraveling yourself.

Don’t wait for random fate to accomplish it. And for best results, formulate an intention to regard everything that transpires as a blessing.

CAPRICORN (December 22–January 19) “A waterfall would be more impressive if it flowed the other way,” said Irish author Oscar Wilde. I appreciate the wit, but don’t agree with him. A plain old ordinary waterfall, with foamy surges continually plummeting over a precipice and crashing below, is sufficiently impressive for me. What about you, Capricorn? In the coming days, will you be impatient and frustrated with plain old ordinary marvels and wonders? Or will you be able to enjoy them just as they are?

AQUARIUS (January 20–February 18) Years ago, I moved into a rental house with my new girlfriend, whom I had known for six weeks. As we fell asleep the first night, a song played in my head: “Nature’s Way,” by the band Spirit. I barely knew it and had rarely thought of it before. And yet there it was, repeating its first line over and over: “It’s nature’s way of telling you something’s wrong.” Being a magical thinker, I wondered if my unconscious mind was telling me a secret about my love. But I rejected that possibility; it was too painful to contemplate. When we broke up a few months later, however, I wished I had paid attention to that early alert. I mention this, Aquarius, because I suspect your unconscious mind will soon provide you with a wealth of useful information, not just through song lyrics but other subtle signals, as well. Listen up! At least some of it will be good news, not cautionary like mine.

PISCES (February 19–March 20)

When I advise you to GET NAKED, I don’t mean it in a literal sense.

Yes, I will applaud if you’re willing to experiment with brave acts of self-revelation. I will approve of you taking risks for the sake of the raw truth. But getting arrested for indecent exposure might compromise your ability to carry out those noble acts. So, no, don’t actually take off all your clothes and wander through the streets. Instead, surprise everyone with brilliant acts of surrender and vulnerability. Gently and sweetly and poetically tell the Purveyors of Unholy Repression to take their boredom machine and shove it up their humdrum.
