Rhapsodies After the Verdict Truth, justice and my brother, Mark

n Nov. 21, 2011, Mark Herczog was killed by my nephew Houston during a psychotic break. At the time, we were aware of Houston’s disabling depression, isolation and uncharacteristic behaviors.

We didn’t know he’d been experiencing the classic onset of schizophrenia. We had no knowledge of severe mental illness, the penal or legal system. That morning, our very average family woke up in hell.

If we’d believed that Houston took his father’s life under the influence or with premeditation, we’d have been quiet while justice was served. In our case, justice had an agenda. For 18 months, we were honest and forthcoming with District Attorney Jill Ravitch and Deputy District Attorney Bob Waner about our knowledge, including how desperately Mark and Houston’s mom, Marilyn, wanted help for their son.

We had it on good authority that when the third expert found Houston insane, Jill Ravitch would finally hospitalize him. She changed her mind, and the district attorney’s office requested its own fourth doctor. Livid, I called Waner about him. He replied, “He’s not a prosecution whore, if that’s what you think.” Politics.

Unbelievable. Bless you, jury, for finding the truth.

Mr. Waner assured us the state would act in Mark’s interest, but he became a footnote in the district attorney’s $250,000 mission to win the case. We learned how Mark died in the Press Democrat. We had no warning that the local media would print the gruesome details of my brother’s death. I started every interview with, “Please, don’t let my brother Mark get lost in all this.” He was the victim. This district attorney’s office “champions” victim’s rights. Shame on them.

Mark Herczog was the finest, funniest and most kindhearted man I’ve ever known. He was an extraordinary guitar player, vocalist and songwriter whose music evoked joy and inspiration. Mark helped thousands find experience, strength and hope in the 36 years he was a member of AA. He was genuinely loved by anyone who had the good fortune of knowing him. How blessed I am that he was my brother. Rest in peace now, Marky. Your family is healing. May you always be remembered not for how you died, but for how you lived.

Deputy Shooting

Thank you for this detailed, unbiased article (“Gun Crazy,” Oct. 30) about the sickening, unnecessary death of 13-year-old Andy Lopez.

Two thoughts occur to me as I consider the shooting of Andy Lopez by a law enforcement officer. First, some people think that because Andy’s toy gun looked like the real thing, the officer was justified in shooting him. However, considering that the officer in question is a so-called firearms expert, he should have been able to tell the difference between a real AK-47 and a toy. For example, Andy was effortlessly carrying the rifle with one hand by the grip, which is difficult to do with a real AK-47.

(Firing an AK-47 with one hand is very difficult and requires advanced training to be able to do so accurately.)

Secondly, some people say they would have done the same thing if they were the officer. Well, if I saw someone carrying what looked like an AK-47, I would not be so quick to confront such a person, even if I were a police officer.

A more prudent approach might have been to observe the subject from a safe distance, and perhaps try to get their attention using the patrol car’s PA system while waiting for backup. The officer really didn’t need to put himself in a position of potential danger.

Yes, hindsight is 20/20, and I am Monday-morning quarterbacking, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try to figure out what went wrong and fix it so it doesn’t happen again. If we don’t change law enforcement’s engagement policies and we don’t change officers’ training and we don’t hold officers accountable for their mistakes, then we are all in very real danger of being killed anytime, anywhere, just because we’re holding a toy gun or a cell phone that an officer thinks is a gun, or a wallet

that an officer thinks is a gun, or a broom that an officer thinks it might hurt to be hit with (all of which have actually resulted in people being killed by police officers, none of whom were charged with a crime).

There are situations where a police officer should be warranted to engage in open fire: (1) to retaliate when fired upon; (2) to save the life or well-being of a hostage held by someone with a weapon, after repeated verbal attempts to reason had failed; (3) to stop an armed suspect from fleeing the scene of the crime after committing a confirmed serious felony—after yelling a warning; and (4) in response to imminent risk during a dangerous event such as a drug bust, bank heist or prison revolt where a serious crime has already been committed.

However, is it appropriate that an officer opens fire in a routine drive-by when encountering a person of interest, where none of the above factors pertain? If personal safety becomes a concern, aren’t there other initial options available, including calling for backup, communicating via loudspeaker and using the patrol car as the shield it is? If official police training/protocol dictates otherwise, is it time for a re-evaluation by the community served?

How come we’re encouraged by some to own/hold/use guns proudly, while simple possession (toy or not) can get us killed? Is it appropriate that the existence of a removable colored tip on a toy be the deciding factor on whether a child’s life is in danger?

Finally, why would we try to equate the sadness a deputy surely feels following his shooting of an innocent toy-guntoting child with the horrible grief of the dead child’s family? Doesn’t one involve a bad memory which in time will fade, while the other involves an everlasting agony like no other we could imagine?

Beach Burn A few days ago, without a public forum or announcement, the state parks department burned down all the driftwood structures that have stood on the beach in Jenner for some 50 years. A part of Sonoma County history, these whimsical lean-tos, buildings and sculptures represented a cultural moment in California history.

It took four fire trucks and two helicopters to clean up the mess after the “controlled burn” went out of control.

Besides the structures, the fire burned up the entire hillside and threatened the 101 bridge. As one witness reported, “They told me they were gonna burn up the wood on the beach so no one would burn the wood on the beach.” Yeah— that about sums it up.

Dreams on Hold

SAY’s Dream Center, which would house homeless youth, faces continuing criticism from neighbors BY LEILANI CLARK

A

neighborhood battle over a center for homeless youth in Santa Rosa continues to raise accusations of both NIMBY-ism on one side and distorted facts on the other.

The Dream Center, a proposed development in Bennett Valley by the nonprofit Social Advocates for Youth (SAY), would provide short-

and long-term affordable housing units for youth between the ages of 18 and 24, a contingent that’s grown steadily. SAY’s annual homeless youth count in 2009 found 268 people between the ages of 12 and 24 living on the streets; in 2013, that number is 1,128.

After discovering that the 38,000-square-foot former Warrack Hospital had sat empty since 2008, SAY’s executive director Matt Martin approached

Sutter about taking over the building. Sutter agreed, and SAY proposed the Dream Center, a fullservice facility with administrative offices, job training and employment counseling, healthcare services and on-site housing.

SAY cites the success of Tamayo Village, an existing 25-unit development down the road, as a model for the future center. But Community Unite, a coalition of Bennett Valley residents, began

raising opposition at planning meetings in the spring, citing safety concerns and accusing SAY of misrepresenting the facts.

“There are issues with Tamayo Village, which is the benchmark for this facility,” says Brenda Chatelain, a homeowner who lives within 300 yards of the Warrack Hospital site. “We can confirm that Tamayo has had sex offenders, gang members and violent felons.”

Chatelain charges that SAY has not been forthcoming about the criminal element at Tamayo Village. She cites a September 2013 letter, “written on behalf of 12 Sonoma County deputy probation officers,” which asserts that gang members, sex offenders and violent felons have all been either supervised, seen at or housed in Tamayo Village.

Out of 25 Tamayo Village residents, one is currently on probation, says SAY communications manager Caitlin Childs. SAY works in partnership with the probation department to “ensure our youths’ joint success,” she adds via email, but clarifies that youth are not “sent” to live at Tamayo Village and that it isn’t a halfway house, as some have portrayed.

Likewise, residents of the Dream Center would not be sent by the courts, but would voluntarily apply in an open-application process.

But Chatelain and others from Community Unite say they’re concerned about whether staff will be adequately trained, as well as the scope of the proposed Dream Center, which could contain as many as 63 units for homeless youth.

“It’s pretty well known that the optimum environment for people transitioning out of probation, foster care or homelessness, where they really thrive, is six to 10 people,” Chatelain says.

After soliciting the neighborhood for feedback on the project in November 2012 and looking at models of already successful affordable housing in the county, such as Burbank Housing, the ambition to build a 100-unit facility was scaled down.

“We got a lot of feedback from neighbors that said it felt to big,” says SAY director of development Cat Cvengros. The current plan proposes 40 units of affordable

Courtney Lavelle, 22, has been an onsite facility manager at Tamayo Village for the past year.

“Have you sat down and had a conversation with them?” Lavelle says. “They’re regular kids that go to high school, go to the JC. They’re regular kids who’ve had hardships in their lives. They’re beautiful creatures, in my opinion.”

Concerns raised by Bennett Valley neighbors have helped logistically, Cvengros says. “Out of it has come a lot of positive feedback to make this a place that will meet the youth’s needs and the needs of the neighborhood.

The more people involved, the better the Dream Center will be.”

Meanwhile, Community Unite, according to Chatelain, demands a neutral, third-party socioeconomic impact report before any further decisions are made.

“It’s easy to be reflexive and say they’re about helping kids,” says Chatelain. “When you drill down, things are seldom black-and-white.

It’s incumbent upon Bennett Valley residents to do due diligence. A neutral, third-party study is the only way to do it, because I believe there is an agenda in place that doesn’t necessarily serve anyone well.”

The application for the Dream Center is scheduled to go before the planning commission in early 2014, and then to the Santa Rosa City Council, where it will again be open to public comment.

Loud Noises The name “Andy Lopez” has inspired large marches for justice, several memorials and a makeshift park at the southwest Santa Rosa site where he was shot to death by sheriff’s deputy Erick Gelhaus on Oct. 22. Now the power of Andy Lopez is affecting political campaigns.

The Andy Lopez Organizing Group plans a loud protest on Dec. 3 outside Sonoma County district attorney Jill Ravitch’s pasta feed fundraiser at the Santa Rosa Veterans Memorial Building.

“We’re going to bring the demand that Gelhaus be indicted for murder right to her front door at the pasta feed,” says Jonathan Melrod, a member of the group.

But even if the Santa Rosa Police Department were to conclude in its official investigation that Gelhaus was out of line for shooting the 13-year-old, it’s unlikely that Ravitch would try a member of the sheriff’s department for murder due to the strong mutual political support between the district attorney and Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Steve Freitas gave a fiery speech at Ravitch’s re-election kickoff event earlier this year (pictured above); Ravitch, likewise, has warmly endorsed Freitas, even introducing him at his campaign kickoff event in September.

Unless Ravitch recuses herself from the review of the SRPD’s investigation, pressure will surely continue to mount while Ravitch and Freitas campaign for re-election. “We feel that in the court of public opinion [Ravitch] is guilty of a conflict of interest with the sheriff’s department,” says Melrod.

Potential residents would be subject to a criminal background check, a sex-offender check and a lease agreement. The facility will also offer 10 free, short-term housing slots of up to three months for residents that have been pre-drugand alcohol-screened.

Los Angeles, is now shaking up the food publishing scene with a new memoir-cookbook, L.A. Son: My Life, My City, My Food, the first release from Anthony Bourdain’s new publishing imprint. Choi appears in St. Helena as part of Flavor! Napa Valley on Nov. 23.

For L.A. Son, Choi kept three goals in mind: make it affordable, truly tell the story of L.A. immigrant life and keep it rated R. He succeeds at all three.

In addition, his own personal narrative details struggles with adversity, addiction and finding

his calling in life.

Choi moved from South Korea to Koreatown in Los Angeles as an infant. His parents failed at liquor store and restaurant businesses before striking gold with a jewelry business. As their wealth grew (they eventually moved into Nolan Ryan’s former Orange County house), Choi struggled with his identity in SoCal’s bleach-blonde suburbs.

He turned to the streets, disappearing alone for days and bumming around Hollywood, becoming the only Asian member of a Latino lowrider club and

running with a crew called the Grove Street Mob. He flirted with alcoholism and crack before falling to the soft touch of green felt on Indian casino card tables.

Amid Choi’s troubles, there was food, recipes of which are peppered throughout the pages of L.A. Son: carne asada with the lowriders, pho and pork fried rice from casinos and some of the healing dishes from his mother’s kitchen after his parents finally staged an intervention for his gambling addiction.

Choi says he wrote most of L.A. Son’s personal stories between midnight and 6am, “because I had to tap into a place that was blocked off. I couldn’t write about those things when other people were awake, because I would consciously think people were looking at it or concerned about it,” he says. “Even if you haven’t read in a while, you can read this book because it’s alive. It just feels like me talking to you, right here.”

Napa Valley, a three-day festival featuring local chefs Cindy Pawlcyn, Dario Di Conti, Tyler Rodde, Michael Chiarello and Christopher Kostow alongside high-profile visitors like Todd English, Scott Conant, Mario Carbone and Masaharu Morimoto.

And while he won’t be prepping for Thanksgiving dinner (“I don’t believe in the lies that holiday represents,” he says), he’s all but guaranteed to inspire attendees with his own unique recipes—and his life story.

“I think the great part of it now, in that arc, is that it’s moving further and further away from having to define it as a Korean guy doing this, and it’s just becoming a story that inspires others,” Choi says. “It doesn’t matter where you come from or what color you are—it’s just an American story.”

Wine pairing for the vital wheat gluten gobbler BY JAMES KNIGHT

T

here are those vegetarians among us who are perfectly happy to give thanks at the minimum rate of once a year, but prefer not to mark the holiday by chomping down on dead bird. What wine, then, pairs best with the most popular turkey alternatives available on the market today?

In the interest of addressing this vexing question, I recently cooked one Tofurky and one Field Roast brand Celebration Roast, accompanied by mashed potatoes (with real butter—hey, I’m no savage), mashed yams, green beans, Brussels sprouts and, to cover all bases, cranberry sauce, and tricked a few friends into offering opinions on the result, matched with a few representative wines. Our findings: Martin Ray 2012 Russian River Valley Pinot Gris ($16) Perfectly innocuous, with aromas of white flowers and dry perry.

Tofurky enhances its apply zest, but it’s too bright for the fare.

Francis Coppola 2012 ‘Director’s Cut’ Alexander Valley Sauvignon Blanc ($21) Sour apple, honeydew melon-rind aromas; zesty, grassy lime flavors. Choice quaff, but it’s sour-down with cranberry sauce and only OK paired with the alarmingly high-sodium Tofurky.

Chateau St. Jean 2012 Alexander Valley Riesling ($20) I assumed that this would be sweeter. Aiming for a dry style, ol’ Jeanie made an interesting floral and pineapple-scented wine, with vitamin C tablet sourness. Riesling is my recommendation for T-Day generally, but this wine just left me wishing I liked it more—and you’re not fooling anyone at the table if you think they won’t notice.

Benziger 2011 Sonoma County Chardonnay ($16) Lemon meringue, custard tart and fresh white grape with a caramel gloss make the Tofurky sing! Not rich enough to complement the mashed potatoes; still, the Benziger was acclaimed as a nice, Plain Jane Chardonnay that won’t offend anyone, not even the green beans.

La Crema 2012 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir ($25) Dependably flavorful combination of sweet and spicy coriander, rhubarb pie, dried cherry and cranberry—like drinking Christmas. Better with the earthy Celebration Roast than with Tofurky, while the mash accentuates sweet strawberry notes.

Cline 2010 Sonoma County Syrah ($12) Wild, sweaty Syrah aromas give way to sweet plum, licorice, blueberry and vanilla.

Douses the Tofurky and Roast with sweet blueberry sauce, leaving a lingering, sinuous center. Surprise hit.

Frank Family 2011 Napa Valley Zinfandel ($36.75) Toasted vanilla bean, raspberry wine, bright berry jam aromas—it’s fun, good with yams, cozy with cranberries, but kinda brash with the veggie products.

Rodney Strong 2010 Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon ($20) With gentle aromas of mixed berries and a soft, fruity palate, this nice-guy Cab gets along with everyone. Except for cranberry sauce: fight! Cab loses.

or those of us who remember, it’s hard to believe it’s been 50 years since that black Friday in November when John F. Kennedy was shot.

I was a 17-year-old freshman at Brooklyn College, a political science major who could feel the world opening up to new ideas after the stodgy Eisenhower years. When I heard the news, my entire world was turned upside down, and bright hopes shattered into a million pieces. That night, I saw my father crying. I had only

seen him cry once before, when his sister passed away.

My best friend and I spent the next two days walking, walking, walking, trying to make some kind of sense of the act and trying to imagine a future. We walked across the Brooklyn Bridge to Manhattan and back. I missed the broadcast of Oswald being shot

by Jack Ruby, because I was still out there, trying to walk off the massive hurt.

America hasn’t ever really recovered from that day.

In 1958, when the Pew Foundation began doing its polling on the topic, 73 percent of Americans polled trusted

their government. At the time Kennedy was in office, that figure had spiked to nearly 80 percent.

Today? The 2013 Pew poll reports that just 19 percent say they trust the government. Is that an amazing coincidence? Or did what so many Americans perceive as a betrayal at the highest levels turn us inexorably down a road of despair, denial, apathy and cynicism?

In the 50 years since the assassination, there have been some 2,000 books written on the subject. The books tend to fall into several categories: one, that there was no conspiracy and the official story stands (not many,

but some books proclaim this); two, that there was a plot, which points to the Soviet Union or Castro’s Cuba; three, that the Mafia did it; and four, that the CIA and the Mafia did it.

I certainly haven’t read all of those books, but I did at least come to the conversation early. As a freshman teacher in Washington, D.C., in 1967 as part of the Urban Teaching Corps, I was given the material to ) 16

teach a unit on alternative views of the Kennedy assassination. As I delved into a mystery I’d never examined before, two red flags jumped out at me. One was the Zapruder film showing the back of Kennedy’s head as he was shot and how it indicated that a bullet came from the front and not from the Texas School Book Depository building, where Oswald supposedly carried out his deed. The other red flag was the surprising number of witnesses to the assassination who met unfortunate and untimely ends.

Seeds of doubt were planted in me, and the one thing that I knew to be true about the Kennedy assassination is that the official story was not true.

Apparently, I’m not alone.

According to a recent AP poll, just 24 percent of Americans believe in the official “Oswald acted alone” story, and some 59 percent are convinced there was indeed a conspiracy. But you will never see these alternative stories aired on mainstream media, and if mentioned, they are quickly dismissed as “conspiracy theories.” So if you’ve read extensively on the subject and believe the official story is a pack of lies, you are never to say so publicly lest you lose credibility and find yourself classified as one of those “conspiracy nuts.”

You are being asked to deny, and then deny you are denying. Perhaps this central disconnection from authenticity and integrity is why there is such seething and misdirected anger in this country, and political discourse has devolved into “detestimonials and insinuendos.”

It might also explain why we are a country at war with itself, and our government is watching us— instead of the other way around.

he body politic is most certainly in need of healing, and of all those 2,000 books that have been written about the Kennedy assassination, there is one book that stands out as a potential pathway to metabolizing our huge political toxin.

JFK and the Unspeakable: Why He Died & Why It Matters is

authored by James W. Douglass, a progressive Catholic deeply influenced by the American Trappist monk Thomas Merton (1915–1968). Though Merton lived a monastic life and rarely traveled, he was influential as a religious philosopher whose correspondents included wellknown Catholics of all political persuasions, from Clare Boothe Luce to Ethel Kennedy.

Because of his fierce inner convictions and willingness to stand for these convictions, Merton was able to gaze unflinchingly into the heart of darkness. He used the word “unspeakable” to describe “a suicidal moral evil and total lack of ethics and rationality with which international politics tend to be conducted.”

It’s hard to imagine a book about the death of a beloved president at the hands of “the unspeakable” as inspiring, but Douglass’ book courageously acknowledges the likeliest scenario, and by facing the dark implications, shows us a way toward redemption. In many ways, JFK and the Unspeakable is a spiritual book. It seems so old-fashioned to speak about “evil,” and yet it may be that our unwillingness to use this term and face the darkness head-on is why evil seems to have snuggled up with us and moved in next door.

Douglass introduces three main “characters” in this book: John F. Kennedy, the Unspeakable and you, the reader.

Kennedy’s story in this book is a tale of transformation, from cold warrior to peacemaker.

His moment of epiphany came during the Cuban Missile Crisis, as the world stood on the brink of nuclear war. The transcripts of Kennedy’s interactions with the Joint Chiefs of Staff (the book is over 500 pages, 100 of which are footnotes and references) show how he resisted war and how angry the generals were—even after he dodged the bullet and the missiles were removed from Cuba.

Nikita Khrushchev during the crisis. A message sent by the president’s brother Robert F. Kennedy to Soviet ambassador Anatoly Dobrynin put it bluntly: “If the situation continues much longer, the President is not sure that the military will not overthrow him and seize power.”

Premier Khrushchev, having similar misgivings about plunging the world into nuclear holocaust, agreed to pull the missiles out of Cuba, and the crisis evaporated. In exchange, President Kennedy made a verbal promise to remove our missiles from Turkey within six months, which came to pass.

In a significant sense, both Kennedy and Khrushchev had what we might term today neardeath experiences. In returning from the brink of massive destruction, both of them dedicated themselves to doing whatever they could to end the Cold War. For Kennedy, it was the thought of all those children who would never grow up to live a full life had he pushed the button. His generals, on the other hand, were perfectly willing to gamble the lives of millions of Americans and millions more Russians on a first strike that they believed would immobilize the Soviet Union.

Kennedy and Khrushchev communicated often during the last year of Kennedy’s life. They often spoke about having more in common with one another than

with their generals. Kennedy initiated three policy changes that put him at odds with his generals, with most of his party leaders and most definitely with the military industrial complex. He sought a nuclear test ban treaty as a way to slow, if not stop, the Cold War escalation; he opened secret lines of communication to Fidel Castro, with an eye toward rapprochement with the Cuban communist regime; and he made firm plans to end the Vietnam War before it started.

All of this—and the resistance Kennedy got from nearly all quarters—is well-documented in Douglass’ book. It may well be that had Kennedy lived, the Vietnam War Memorial we are all so familiar with wouldn’t exist today, and those who died would have lived full and fulfilling lives. Those who still suffer from PTSD would likewise have been able to focus on healthier pursuits. And the culture wars that have divided America might never have happened. Take, for example, when Kennedy appeared in Salt Lake City—even then a conservative bastion—and proposed a nuclear test ban. The audience, largely Mormon, gave him a standing ovation that lasted for minutes.

elements in our own government were responsible for the assassination—you will have to read the book to make your own conclusions—John F. Kennedy’s transformation from war maker to peacemaker was stopped dead in its tracks. In regards to Vietnam, according to Stanley Karnow’s 1983 book Vietnam: A History, Lyndon Johnson reassured the Joint Chiefs in December 1963, a month after succeeding to the office, “Just let me get elected, then you can have your war.”

And so it was. And here we are today, armed to the teeth, as dangerous as any rogue state, gazillions in debt and mired in despair, decay and dysfunction.

So who or what is this Unspeakable?

When he first used the term, Thomas Merton was referring to the secret and silent power that gave itself dominion some 15 years before Kennedy was killed. The National Security Act of 1947 established the National Security Council and the Central Intelligence Agency, and officially renamed the Department of War the Department of Defense. Not content to leave Orwell-enough alone, in 1948 President Harry Truman’s National Security Council approved the top secret direction NSC 10/2 that would empower the CIA to carry out covert acts under the veil of secrecy. Truman’s original understanding of the CIA was as an intelligence-gathering (i.e., spying) organization, but under this new mandate, the CIA became another arm of warfare-waging propaganda campaigns, sabotage, and “executive action” (their own benign term for assassination).

It was another seemingly innocent phrase, “plausible deniability,” that gave this secret government carte blanche.

Because NSC 10/2 blatantly violated international law, it required some form of “lie-ability” insurance. The directive stated that all such activities were to be “so planned and executed that any U.S. government responsibility is not evident to unauthorized persons, and if uncovered the U.S. government can plausibly deny

any responsibility for them.”

So did elements from our secret government have anything to do with a plot to kill John F. Kennedy?

Douglass presents no definitive proof of any particular higher-up calling the shots, although the circumstantial evidence—if one is willing to see the patterns—is overwhelming. Again, you will have to read the book and make your own conclusions.

And this is where the third character in the story enters: the American people.

Several years ago, I read an article by journalist Doug Thompson published by OpEdNews.com.

In it, Thompson recalls a 1981 encounter with the late John Connally, the former governor of Texas who was wounded in the Kennedy assassination. In an unguarded moment, Thompson asked Connally, “Do you think Lee Harvey Oswald fired the gun that killed Kennedy?” “Absolutely not,” Connally said. “I do not, for one second, believe the conclusions of the Warren Commission.” “So why not speak out?” Thompson asked. “I will never speak out publicly about what I believe,” Connally replied, “because I love this country and we needed closure at the time.” Now, half a century after that devastating perpetration, a dozen years since 9-11 and months after revelations that, via the NSA, the government is indeed “listening to the people,” we might want to ask, how well did “closure” serve us?

As I read the story of how Kennedy and Khrushchev and Pope John XXIII were secretly plotting for peace during that year following the Cuban Missile Crisis (“Nothing is impossible,” wrote the pope shortly before he died), I see a dream interrupted.

And only by immersing ourselves in this dark history and shining the light of awareness, love and understanding can we pick up the pieces and renew this journey, with greater unity, wisdom and resolve. Read this book. Speak about the unspeakable. It may well be America’s pathway to redemption.

Dreamed a Dream Chris Hohmann reflects his own life in ‘Les Misérables’

In the soaring, heart-rending

1980 musical adaptation by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg—as in the 1862 novel

by Victor Hugo—the longsuffering ex-convict Jean Valjean endures a lifetime of hardship, loss, isolation and misunderstanding. Somehow, he prevails, discovering a sense of purpose in spite of the crushing obstacles of his life.

Hohmann identifies with that.

A lot.

Valjean’s perseverance is just one of the characteristics that attracted the 20-year-old actor to

the role, which he tackles in Santa Rosa Junior College’s winter production of Les Misérables, running Nov. 22–Dec. 8. Hohmann first encountered the show while a sophomore at El Molino High School, playing the part of the bishop who gives Jean Valjean a second chance. Ironically, Hohmann now takes on the part of Valjean, having had his own fair share of second chances.

“I grew up with an alcoholic mother,” he explains, matter-offactly. “She’s bipolar and partially

blind, has been in and out of jail, and all of my life I was in and out of different foster homes, starting at the age of seven. If my life were a movie or something, people would describe it as, you know, being ‘forced into a life of abuse and violence.’ Which I guess was pretty much true. I’ve been homeless. I’ve lived in public shelters. I’ve been in jail. I’ve lived on the streets.

“But through all of that,” he adds, “I stayed in school, even when I was homeless. I kept up pretty good grades. Took singing lessons. I just tried to keep moving forward, because I didn’t know what else to do. So yeah, I definitely connect with the character of Jean Valjean.”

Hohmann learned early to watch out for danger. When he was five, he suffered a concussion when another boy in a local homeless shelter threw him to the ground. When he and his half-sisters were taken from their mother not long after that incident, he spent some time at the Valley of the Moon Children’s Home. Eventually, he entered the foster system, only occasionally reuniting with his mother.

“That was the beginning of my induction into the lifestyle of a foster kid,” he says. “You learn quickly what it’s like to be on your own.

The kids in the system have all been abused and neglected, one way or another, and they tend to take it out on each other. You learn in a hurry that you have to be strong.”

Through the early part of Hohmann’s life, his father was mostly out of the picture. But after a few years in foster homes, Hohmann and his dad were suddenly reunited. A longtime keyboard musician who’d performed with the likes of Carlos Santana and others, Hohmann’s father was then operating a barbershop in Guerneville.

know my dad,â€? Hohmann says, “which was really cool. He was a respectable kind of guy, a working professional. He taught me how to ďŹ sh, how to shake hands with people to get their respect. He was a drinker, though. He had a lot of problems.â€?

Over the next few years, Hohmann bounced back and forth between his father, foster homes, his mother and the streets, where his mom still lives most of the time. A few years ago, his dad died of lung cancer. In spite of it all, Hohmann graduated from high school and was accepted into Sonoma State University.

There, facing an accusation from a fellow student of unwanted sexual contact, he was arrested and spent time in county jail.

Determined to turn his life around with both sobriety and counseling, he’s now working hard on his dream of being an actor and singer, with the help of Les MisĂŠrables director Laura Downing-Lee and a massive student and community cast. “Laura has put together a great team,â€? Hohmann says. “There are some incredible makeup artists, prop designers, set builders, everything. It’s amazing to be onstage with these huge pieces of scenery ying into place. There will be a lot of interesting pyrotechnics and some pretty cool elements of realism in the ďŹ ght scenes.â€?

And then there’s Valjean, a role coming fully equipped with some of the most gorgeous and recognizable songs in modern Broadway history, and one that mirrors Hohmann’s own troubled life. “I did see my mom the other day,� he says. “She came to a rehearsal and watched for a while.�

Unfortunately, he adds, she won’t be able to see the actual show, as she’s about to begin serving a jail sentence. But she did get to see him sing. “That was nice,� Hohmann admits. “I think she’s kind of proud of me.�

The gentle little comedy by American playwright Mary Chase debuted in 1944, and ended up running on Broadway for five years. The story of an amiable alcoholic who claims to have a six-foot invisible rabbit as a best friend, Harvey won the Pulitzer for drama in 1945, and five years later was made into an Oscar-winning film starring Jimmy Stewart. It is that version most people have stumbled across, with Stewart’s indelible portrayal of Elwood Dowd that’s become a pop-culture icon of nonconformist optimism and genial human kindness.

But it all started with the play, which the Ross Valley Players are currently staging in a production that shows why audiences were so taken with Harvey seven

decades ago. Steve Price gives an uncannily spot-on imitation of James Stewart’s vocal timbre and steady-soft acting style, while still bringing a bit of his own interpretation to the role of Elwood. He’s the kind of guy who likes everybody, casually inviting cab drivers and telephone marketers over for dinner, the sort who loves nothing more than hanging out in bars with his invisible friend, enjoying the company of his fellow human beings.

So of course his family wants him committed to an asylum. His status-seeking sister, Veta (Pamela Chiochetti), is still angry that her father left his house and fortune to Elwood, whose rabbit fixation has made her family a bit of a joke in social circles. Only by having him committed—and out of the way of her attempts to marry off her daughter, Myrtle Mae (Robyn Grahn)—can she gain control of the fortune and her freedom from Harvey, whom she admits she occasionally sees herself.

A series of misunderstandings at the local asylum, where the doctors claim to be able to cure anyone of delusions with a single shot of a mystery drug, leads to Veta being accidentally admitted herself, while Elwood loses track of Harvey, who, invisible or not, delusion or not, clearly has some sort of agenda of his own.

Under Robert Wilson’s unfussy but pace-challenged direction, the charming, old-fashioned story is brought to (mostly) satisfying life by a cast of community theater favorites and a few RVP newcomers. Though I wish the tone were a little more grounded and a bit less cartoonish and high-pitched, the story still works, bringing Harvey to life in all his invisible, amiably subversive glory.

‘Hunger Games: Catching Fire’ an oddly solemn half-sequel BY RICHARD VON BUSACK

T

he rushed, jostling sequel Hunger Games: Catching Fire has a severe case of middle-child syndrome; it’s only there as a conduit to the invention of the two-part sequel.

In the film, the military-industrial-entertainment complex of futuristic Panem celebrates the 75th anniversary of the Hunger Games by staging a pit-match with more than a dozen badly introduced previous winners. The traumatized Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence, still solid and enigmatic, an action heroine to reckon with) must fight alongside the boy whose life she saved in the last film. He’s Peeta, played by the inert Josh Hutcherson. The government is propagandizing a trumped-up romance between Katniss and Peeta, while the Girl on Fire’s old flame, Gale (Liam Hemsworth), languishes in coal country. But “Bow” comes before “boyfriend” in Katniss’ dictionary.

The most dangerous game commences in a tropical thunderdome, beset by mustard gas, annoying birds and purple-assed baboons.

As in the Harry Potter films, it’s the character actors that wake this movie up. Stanley Tucci corners the market on humor here as the smarmy TV host Caesar, with his cotton-candy purple mullet. Playing the new torture-master, Philip Seymour Hoffman has a tunnelvisioned viciousness, as does Johanna (Jena Malone), the Faith to Katniss’ Buffy.

We don’t get a better idea of how Panem exists here, except as twittery partygoers and proles standing around giving the Boy Scout salute. Donald Sutherland, as the aging President Rose, glowers, sneers and personally delivers information that a smarter dictator would keep to himself. We know Rose is declining, but it’s strange how Panem doesn’t have the interesting power struggles that commence when an elderly totalitarian leader has no clear successor.

Director Francis Lawrence, of I Am Legend, softens the distressing kid-killing violence, but he composes as if for the cellphone screen, a matter visible even in IMAX. The Zardozian outfits suggest that the costumers and the makeup people get to have the most fun in this, a solemn sci-fi parody of our own gargantuan American excesses.

Soundscape Project combines nature, dance and music

S

o a troupe of dancers, engineering students and musicians walk into a nature preserve with Bernie Krause and—no joke—compose a conceptual art piece about the origin of music.

“The idea is that animals taught us to dance and sing,� says Krause, a renowned nature recordist, author and consultant on the Soundscape Project at Sonoma State University. “There’s almost nothing in Western music in the 20th century that relates directly to the natural world,� he says. “This is an important project.�

Claudia Luke, director of SSU’s three nature preserves, ďŹ rst met Krause years ago working on a project in the Mojave Desert, where he recorded, for the ďŹ rst time, the

high-pitched calls ďŹ re ants make when they’re rallying for an attack.

She’s excited about the crossdiscipline collaboration of this project, which includes choreographed dance, video, recorded and composed sound, and the environment of the natural world. “It’s turning sound into art,� she says.

Dance students used the preserves as a rehearsal studio, engulďŹ ng themselves in nature before even hearing the ďŹ nished soundtrack. “Composers often use these types of sounds in contemporary dance,â€? says the project’s Sebastopol-based composer Jesse Olsen Bay, “but I haven’t seen anything speciďŹ cally about these types of sounds. Everyone working on this project was responding to these soundscapes.â€?

There are subtle differences in the ďŹ eld recordings. Dawn at the FairďŹ eld Osborne Preserve is a sparse mix of owls and other large birds, each occupying a different sonic space. At the Galbreath Valley site, it’s more of a blanket of small sounds with large birds, like crows, taking the lead melody. One challenge, says Olsen Bay, was to translate the “hugenessâ€? of nature into “a form that wants to be neatly packaged.â€? Olsen Bay took the ďŹ eld recordings and worked them into his own studio compositions.

Luke says she hopes the performances help spark the idea that sound can tie into sense of place as much as, if not more than, any other form of stimulation— especially with the free performance at the acoustically sonorous Green Music Center. “What SSU is doing now,� says Krause, “they’re coming full circle to the origins of music.

They’re rediscovering that natural soundscapes really have a certain resonance to them that musicians can draw from.�

The Soundscape Project holds performances on Thursday–Sunday, Nov. 21–24, at the Evert B. Person Theatre at Sonoma State University (Thursday–Saturday at 7:30pm; Sunday at 2pm), and a free noon performance on Friday, Dec. 6, at SSU’s Green Music Center (tickets required). 1801 E. Royal Doyle Prodigal guitarist Doyle Bramhall II celebrates KRSH It seems like just yesterday that Doyle Bramhall II was our own favorite left-handed son, playing weeknights with his dad at the Studio KAFE in the late 1980s, causing more than one fan to proclaim, “That kid’s going places.”

And go places, he certainly has, from touring around the world as the guitarist for Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters to being the only fret-mangler that Eric Clapton trusts by his side while on the road. Last he was seen around these parts, he played to an adoring hometown crowd accompanying Sheryl Crow. (Actually, scratch that. Last he was seen around these parts, he was getting coffee in downtown Santa Rosa with Hollywood girlfriend Renée Zellweger.)

So it’s great to have him back this week, especially in a lineup that includes Charlie Musselwhite and Ray Wylie Hubbard. The $10 tickets are sold-out, but because the whole shebang is a 20th anniversary party for KRSH-FM, the station has more to give away.

Tune in at 95.9-FM and take your chances at calling in—or else hang around the rear of the venue to hear Bramhall’s licks coming through the back door on Friday, Nov. 22, at the Sebastopol Community Center.
