While I answered a seemingly endless string of questions from the dispatcher, you went over to help the man.

You calmly persuaded him not to try to sit up and professionally assessed him for broken bones or other injuries until the ambulance arrived. If I ever get hit by a car, I hope someone like you is close by. People like me without first-aid training can only ignorantly direct traffic and hope help comes fast, but that’s not what’s needed in such a situation.

Since the loss of the Camera Cinemas and the temporary reduction of screens at the Cinearts theatre in Santana Row, I - an inveterate cinéaste - have been deprived of a local (i.e., San Jose) brick-and-mortar venue for foreign films and "arthouse" fare. The offerings of blockbustersuperhero-Sci-Fi schlock by major chains and smaller cinemas (e.g., Los Gatos theatre) just doesn't cut it for me.

The Women’s March returns to San Jose

F

OR CHANDRA BROOKS, a mother of four and outspoken equal rights advocate, the upcoming Women’s March is a chance to recommit to the activism that defines her daily life.

Brooks, a Latina-African American author and entrepreneur who wears many hats in addition to the pink knit variety sure to feature in the mass demonstration this weekend, is no stranger to community organizing. But taking part in the inaugural Women’s March last year—a spontaneous protest to a reality TV star and accused sexual predator becoming president of the United States—inspired her to redouble her efforts.

In the time since, Brooks has reached

out to more women of color in the South Bay to get involved in local advocacy and run for office. She says the message this time around, however, has taken on greater urgency.

For one thing, the #MeToo movement that exposed serial harassers has culminated in #TimesUp, a leaderless initiative that aims to ensure that the LGBTQ community and people of color are represented equally in the push to combat sexual misconduct. The national reckoning will be an important part of the message at Saturday’s march, which is expected to draw tens of thousands of people to downtown San Jose.

“I think that women feel empowered by [the cause],” says Brooks, who serves as vice chair on the Santa Clara County Commission

on the Status of Women, where she fights against human trafficking, for pay parity and to improve conditions for female inmates. “It had to get to this point for that to happen, but I think we're going to continue to see this movement. We’re so used to harassment that we don't really remember a whole lot until we sit down and really think back on how many times it’s happened to us because it becomes so natural for us to deal with, but now we can step up and say something about it and feel comfortable doing it.”

That has certainly been the case in Silicon Valley. Uber engineer Susan Fowler kicked off 2017 by giving the world a glimpse into the tech industry’s sexual harassment problem and bringing unprecedented accountability to the high profile startup. Beyond the workplace, women also became more politically active. By the year’s end, Lisa Middleton won a seat on the Palm Springs City Council, making her the first transgender person elected to a nonjudicial office in California.

Meanwhile, Cathy Murillo was elected the first Latina mayor of Santa Barbara.

If 2017 was about coming forward,

“A big part of what we're doing is emphasizing preregistration for voting, which you can do at age 16,” she says. “That’s the first step.”

In an effort to keep participants involved, the march organizers are calling on people to use the hashtag #HearOurVote and #womensmarchbayarea to help keep track of voters and remind people about upcoming events and opportunities for involvement.

“Last year,” she adds, “it was powerful to see people take action and start showing up at meetings all over town, like City Council meetings or the Board of Supervisors meeting. You’d start to see the same people, and it felt we’d created an active a community.”

Brooks says it’s crucial for this year’s march to include ways for women and their allies to become active immediately and find volunteer opportunities for causes that matter to them. That’s why they’ve worked with representatives from 40 nonprofit community organizations to run booths providing actionable information about their services.

When it comes to where women have been—harassed, discriminated against, barred from positions of power—Brooks says she believes that the only place for women, especially women of color, is up.

“I don't really see anything other than opportunity,” she says. “I think that since last year women have felt empowered to take our seats at decision-making tables and not be scared to boldly jump into leadership whether other people like it or not.”

Mattson agrees. Mobilizing as soon as possible is the key to overcoming the discrimination and social injustice facing women today, she says. If women’s issues are to remain at the forefront, then it’s up to them and their allies to keep them there, march organizers say.

“The measure of success of the Women's March is not how many bodies are in the street on a certain day,” Mattson says. “It’s what all of those bodies do the next day and the day after that.”

The group putting on the Silicon Valley Women’s March say the event is time to organize, stand together and lean in. In addition to expressing outrage about sexual assault and harassment, they say the march is a chance to channel that energy into a dynamic political movement.

“I think there are a lot of women who wanted to get engaged and wanted to do something locally but weren't quite sure how to do it,” says Vicky Mattson, one of the lead organizers of the local march.

Indeed, after last year’s march and following the #MeToo Movement, women sought not only to keep up the momentum, but to look for ways to use their new visibility to affect real, tangible change in their communities, politics and workplaces. As anyone who’s tried to transform the face of their community or industry knows, Mattson says, real change does not happen overnight, and certainly not without wide support.

And this weekend, women and their allies will come together again to march at the Bay Area Women’s March. Sister marches will be taking place in San Jose and San Francisco, with the mission of “honoring the champions of human rights, dignity and justice” and “recognizing that defending the most marginalized among us is defending all of us.”

Saturday’s Women's March will take place in downtown San Jose, kicking off at City Hall and heading west down Santa Clara Street to Arena Green East for a rally with speeches, music and food. This year’s speakers include Maria “Mia Amor” Sanchez, co-host of Q 102.1 FM’s “Joey V & Mia Amor in the Morning”; Kanyon Sayers-Roods, Mutsun Ohlone artist and educator; Sarahi Espinoza Salamanca, Dreamers Roadmap founder and CEO; Aejaie Sellers, transgender activist; and many more women of color, from artists and activists to CEOs and educators.

Organizers have christened the rally space “Call to Action Alley,” calling it a place where the real work begins.

This year’s theme is “Hear Our Vote,” and every participant is encouraged to register to vote. With 2018 being the year of the midterm elections, it’s more important than ever to make

Stonelight Tile, located at 609 S. First St., has operated out of this space for two decades. Here, an octogenarian Australian transplant and his wife scramble to beat a recent eviction notice and move a trove of historical artifacts 12 miles north to Alviso.

Packed up in boxes are the original molds for tiles set in the Hearst Castle kitchen, San Francisco’s historic Steinhart Aquarium and Castro Theatre, the Oakland and Berkeley war memorials, and in numerous Silicon Valley landmarks— such as the California Theatre and the Sainte Claire Hotel.

Prior to rebranding in 1953,

Stonelight was known as the Larkin Tile Co. Before that it was Solon & Larkin.

The company’s original name was Solon & Schemmel. Founded in 1920, S&S was a major player among other recognized pre-war Bay Area craft tile producers, such as the California Art Tile Co. in Richmond; Handcraft Tile in Milpitas; and Kraftile Co. in Niles. In its heyday, S&S would produce some of the most sought-after squares of ceramic in the tile world. Today, collectors will pay $150 for a single plate.

Two years from now, S&S and its various iterations will mark 100 years in business. It’s the last local survivor of a once formidable industry. In 2014, longtime San Jose tile maker Fireclay Tile moved its kilns to Aromas and its showroom to San Francisco’s design district.

GRAND DESIGNS At 82, it’s clear that Anson is feeling the weight of his years. Nevertheless, Anson continues to fight for Stonelight’s survival. “I want to see this business go forward,” he says—his gravelly Australian accent stretching the vowels like rubber. “I want to see it get to its 100 years, and hopefully back to its former glory.”

For her part, Sarah Adeel shares Anson’s hope. Adeel, who works for the Kiva.org online microlender, is Anson’s neighbor. She lives in The Pierce, the stylish new apartment complex across the street from Stonelight’s building. After moving into the just-completed building

in 2017, Anson was one of the first people Adeel met. In an ironic paradox, the neighborhood’s gentrification brought Anson some of his most ardent champions.

“I was blown away by the intricacy of the tile,” she says, explaining her initial interest in Stonelight.

Adeel, who studied design and architecture at the Rhode Island School of Design, says she was immediately taken with Anson’s craftsmanship. “Anything beautiful and creative always catches my eye.”

Then she started to dig deeper into the company’s history and learned more about Anson’s plight.

In December 2016, Anson had been served his first eviction notice.

Oakland’s deadly Ghost Ship disaster weeks earlier had drawn attention to fire safety issues in aging buildings that could be used as live-work spaces, and the humble building was looking more like a potential development site with new apartments springing up on opposing corners. Anson was in New Zealand when he got word that a letter had arrived telling him he had 30 days to quit. He appealed for an extension, which was granted.

A year later, he’s almost out, though the physical act of moving and the mental stress of it all has taken its toll on him. Anson says he’s been rising at 4am lately to get a jump on the scant winter daylight. He straps on a back brace and carries the heavy boxes to a pickup truck or leaves the tiles stacked near La Peñita’s dumpster with a “FREE” sign.

He’s fallen a few times as well. “These past 12 months have been horrendous,”

he says, ticking off the hip and back problems that have resulted from his various spills and increased manual labor. When he moves about the almost-vacant showroom he frequently winces in pain.

On his most recent appeal to his landlord, Anson says he was given until the end of January pack up. However, the rent check for this month has been returned. “I expect to be booted out of here any moment,” he says.

When Adeel began to understand the gravity of Anson’s situation, she knew she needed to do something. “It just didn’t make sense to me,” she says of the idea that Stonelight should go under for good. “This is a part of the city’s history. It seemed like everything was going to go to waste, and I didn’t want that to happen.

She began by sending emails to some of her more connected friends, including people at San Jose’s Economic Development Department.

That got the ball rolling, as these contacts spread the word.

Eventually she pulled together a crew of young creatives to help her produce a short documentary film about Anson and Stonelight. She held a wine and cheese reception in The Pierce’s pool deck community room to spread the word. The eight-minute clip is part of a GoFundMe page, which has so far raised almost $4,000. The goal is $25,000, which is the estimated expense of what it will cost to get Anson set up in a new location, which has already been identified in Alviso.

ART UNDERFOOT Tile is nothing new, of course.

Historians have documented the use of fired clay blocks back to ancient Egypt, 6,000 years ago. Tourists are drawn to the fantastic tile mosaics that adorn Moscow’s subway stations. But of late, tile has been having a moment.

The Apartment Therapy and Houzz websites have run predictive tile trend listicles for the past couple of years, while Sunset Magazine has advised its readers to “let the tile do the talking” when considering contemporary kitchen decor. The trend can be seen in the herringbone arrangement at the newly opened Mendocino Farms at the PruneYard Shopping Center in Campbell, or in the hexagonal ceramic bits lining the bathroom floor at Olla Cocina at San Pedro Square in San Jose. A similar pattern is hard to miss in

the uniform constellation of circles set underfoot at Academic Coffee at the edge of San Jose’s SoFA District.

Oakland-based tile-setter and historian Riley Dota says the interest in ceramic surfaces—particularly handcrafted ones—is part of a general current in contemporary interior design that seeks to reverse post-World War II trends in standardization and industrialization.

At the height of World War II, the Bay Area contributed to the war effort by producing thousands of ships in its many shipyards. To meet the demands of the Navy, the shipbuilders had to be extremely efficient.

That philosophy, Dota says, led to new ideas about standardization after the war—giving rise to the tract home and products like vinyl flooring, which were easy to reproduce at acceptable quality for first-time homebuyers.

“It was a new era after the war,” Dota says. “It was very much influenced by highly streamlined industrial production.”

By the time the counterculture began blooming in the Bay Area during the ’60s, the time was ripe for a rebellion against this kind of standardization. And by the time the children of baby boomers came of

BAD NEIGHBORS David Anson never intended to be a purveyor of handcrafted tiles or the heir to a 100-year-old historical legacy.

He wasn’t even a tile guy to begin with.

Born in Australia in 1935, Anson went into the plumbing trade as a young man. His passions for camping and rugby led him to seek a career where he could use his hands and stay out of office buildings. After gaining his license as a plumber, he went on to become a general contractor. “I didn’t want to work in an office,” he says.

“I’m an outside person, not an inside person.” His rugby playing sometimes took precedence over his contracting business. He first came to the States in the ’70s while coaching a touring club.

Anson ultimately landed at the helm of Stonelight Tile after a friend convinced him to take a 50 percent stake in the company. Back then, Anson says he had no idea of

Stonelight’s history. When he first got involved, all he knew about it was that it had most recently been a holding of Australian Consolidated Industries—one of his home country’s largest firms.

The company, which dealt mostly in glass, had invested in a number of tile and ceramic manufacturing companies when it expanded into the United States. When ACI sought to divest itself of many of these small tile companies, Anson’s friend got together a group of investors and persuaded Anson to get on board.

The trouble started almost immediately after Anson took over at Stonelight, which was located on Pomona Avenue at the time. The facility, while old, was capable of cranking out massive orders of tile, which is what Anson and his partners started to do in earnest. The kilns ran 24 hours a day to meet the demand of customers like hospitals and shopping malls and the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

Then, a new neighbor moved in and opened what Anson contends was an illegal recycling business. The operation, San Jose Recycling II Co., spit out clouds of fine debris—ground up roofing, trees and other organic material, which drifted over into Stonelight’s yard and threw a wrench into the works, Anson says.

The glaze-spraying machines gummed up, which in turn disrupted the assembly line. “What was coming out the end of it was rubbish,” Anson says. “Our sales went right down.”

The other investors pulled out, but Anson stuck with the company, convinced it would be an easy fix.

He sued and eventually prevailed in court against the recycling operation.

He intended to use the settlement money to open a new plant up in Greenville, in Plumas County. That plan went south after insurance companies failed to pay up and another antagonistic neighbor tied Anson up in court yet again—this time for almost 12 years.

In the midst of all this, with his old factory impossibly disrupted by environmental pollution and what he intended to be his new factory tied up in court, Anson made a savvy decision.

He didn’t know it at the time, though.

age, it was time for a full-on revolt.

The late-’90s and early-’00s saw a spike in the production of and interest in handcrafted tile—the kind that S&S once produced, according to Dota. It’s a trend that continues today, and which can be seen in contemporary architectural features, such as exposed brick, upcycling of old industrial materials and in the use of reclaimed wood in posh new pubs and housing developments.

It makes sense to Dota that there would be a return to interest in craftsmanship—especially when it comes to tile. “The material itself—the ceramic—it’s almost eternal, just like gemstones,” he says. “The tile locks in unfading color. It’s the same color that came out of the kiln 125 years ago.”

For Adeel, her love of more natural materials arises from a desire to disconnect from the constant buzz of modern tech and to reconnect with a more balanced mental state.

“We’re so wrapped up in this virtual world that the physical world has taken a backseat,” she says, expounding on the value of making things by hand. As for living in an environment constructed of more natural materials, that also has a key benefit, to her mind. “I think it’s all about energy, right? It’s about the purity that’s naturally grown. I think it’s the energy that emits through clay.”

STAY GOLD Without industrial-grade kilns or glazing equipment, fulfilling orders for malls and hospitals was no longer a viable option. Anson had to come up with a new business model and fast.

Anson is a determined man, and isn’t one to give up when the going gets tough. “I refuse to back down when right is not being done,” he says.

“I stand up for myself. If somebody whacks me, mate, I whack ’em back.”

While he knew he wouldn’t be able to produce for large-scale construction projects, Anson did have a secret weapon—the S&S molds. And he was starting to catch on that people would be willing to pay good money for tiles with a human touch and vintage look.

Before the recycling business debacle, Anson had taken special notice of one peculiar customer. “We had a guy who would come in and he’d buy one tile; they were $15 each,” he recalls. The man would come in regularly, and every time, without fail, he would only want one tile made. “I would say, ‘Why don’t you order them all at once, mate?’”

The answer was that the man

was not interested in flooring a bathroom or kitchen. He merely appreciated the aesthetic beauty of a single tile and thought that his friends would as well. The tiles, he told Anson, were birthday presents.

This vital clue came to Anson in the mid-’90s—at the same time as a national resurgence of interest in handcrafted tiles from the so called Golden Era. Historians prize tiles made during this era, from about 1910-1940. It spans a number or major architectural currents—from the arts and crafts movement through the pueblo revival and on to the art deco movement. Solon & Schemmel were in business together from 1920-1936, before Schemmel left and was replaced by Larkin.

Though Anson says it was “more of a happy coincidence” than an accurate reading of tea leaves, Stonelight Tile’s reinvention could hardly have come at a better time.

“I reactivated all the old molds and we started to concentrate on decorative tiles,” Anson says.

It paid off. As word spread that Anson not only had the ability to reissue the iconic S&S tiles, but

“The doctor told me, ‘Just take it easy and don’t have any more falls,’” Anson says. Still, he says he has little choice but to keep moving. Money is tight and on one recent trip to the new site in Alviso, he helps his hired hand, Tito, with numerous heavy and unwieldy items.

All the same, when he stoops to pick up boxes filled with heavy ceramic tiles, it’s not difficult to see the young rugby player of yesteryear. His handshake also betrays the strength he once used to hammer nails and

that he also had the original glaze recipes, commercial and private clients began seeking him out.

He was contracted by the California Theatre and the Sainte Claire to replace tiles that had been damaged in construction projects.

“We had a guy who had intended to restore his bathroom for 20 years,” Anson recalls. Stonelight made it possible when they were able to give the man the original S&S pattern he was looking for.

It’s Jan. 12 and Anson is moving as fast as his old bones will carry him.

He is preparing for yet another trip to Stonelight Tile’s new home, at Hoppe and Liberty streets in Alviso.

It’s worth noting that the efforts of Adeel and Espinoza came together independently of each other. In the end, if Stonelight makes it to its centennial, it will be due to a community effort—a collective refusal to allow history to be extinguished.

Espinoza first encountered Anson’s work after eating lunch at the neighboring La Peñita sometime around 2003. At the time, the community health care organization was planning to do some work on its Gilroy center, and Espinoza believed Anson’s handiwork would fit in nicely with the building’s aesthetic.

“To me, it’s art,” Espinoza says of the tiles he ended up picking out for the back courtyard of the Gardner South County Health Center. “It’s really beautiful stuff.”

The two men kept in contact over the years, and Stonelight also helped Espinoza out with a personal project—his home patio. So, when Espinoza learned that Anson was struggling to find a new home, he came up with what he describes as a mutually beneficial solution. Anson can move in on the cheap, so long as he helps retrofit the buildings; this is good for Gardner, which had been faced the prospect of making the retrofits or knocking down the buildings; and it’s good for locals, many of whom had complained that the buildings were an eyesore.

But it’s more than that, Espinoza says. Gardner Health Services is also marking its own bit of history this year.

The organization was founded 50 years ago, in 1967, with the aim of helping migrant farmworkers access health care.

From its humble beginnings in Alviso, Gardner has grown and now has facilities all over the South Bay. “I think it’s something that we can relate to,” Espinoza says of Stonelight’s existential crisis. “It would be a tragedy to lose an artist and that kind of company that’s been around for so long. There is a value in keeping that body of knowledge and technique alive.”

Santa Clara, San Jose Call Off ‘Border War’ Lawsuits

BY JENNIFER WADSWORTH San Jose and Santa Clara called a truce in a legal fight over two massive developments along their shared border.

The neighboring cities hammered out their settlements at the end of last week, allowing City Place and Santana West to commence construction, pump billions of dollars into the local economy and create thousands of new jobs.

San Jose fired the opening salvo a few years ago by suing the neighboring jurisdiction to halt the $6.5 billion City Place development—called the biggest project in the Mission City’s history—by claiming that it failed to include enough housing. The project

by Related Cos. is expected to bring about 25,000 jobs and 1,360 dwelling units, and San Jose had worried that it would bear the burden of housing the influx of new workers.

Santa Clara later shot back with litigation to block San Jose’s Santana West development at Winchester

and Stevens Creek boulevards, alleging that their larger neighbor failed to adequately study the adverse environmental effects of the project.

The recent settlements come a couple of months after a San Mateo Superior Court judge ruled in favor of Santa Clara in the lawsuit filed by San Jose. Officials announced the news on the same day a Santa Clara Superior Court judge was set to hear Santa Clara’s suit against San Jose.

Under the terms, San Jose will receive up to $15 million from City Place developer Related Cos. for traffic upgrades. The settlement does not require Santa Clara to build more housing and creates no financial obligation to San Jose.

Santa Clara, for its part, agreed to dismiss its challenge to San Jose’s environmental impact report for Santana West. The deal requires San Jose to spend about $2.5 million on

traffic improvements within its borders and $1.2 million for similar upgrades in Santa Clara before leasing the initial 300,000 square feet of space. It also requires San Jose to shell out $5 million to Santa Clara for transportation or affordable housing and another $145,000 to cover some of the latter’s legal fees. The two cities also agreed to work together to curb traffic problems along the Stevens Creek corridor.

San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo released a joint statement with Santa Clara Mayor Lisa Gillmor on Tuesday saying the compromise will benefit both cities. “In addition to allowing these important projects to move forward,” they stated, “this settlement will help our two cities better address the significant affordable housing and traffic congestion problems gripping our region and provides assurances to continue to provide high quality of life for our residents, employees and visitors.”

‘Menopause: The Musical’ features absurdist pop parodies, accomplished cast

I

T’S CRIMINAL HOW wellserved the male menopausal audience is. There is not, nor does there need to be, Male Menopause: The Musical; there is no market for nightshirts reading “Keep Calm and Think About Your Hedge Fund.” And such an audience would need no $1 souvenir fans to ward off hot flashes. Men over 50 never ever feel that hot, anyway.

The Jeanie Linders-written musical debuted in Orlando, Florida, in 2001— about the same time the Backstreet Boys were running amok—and it’s survived, complete with merch in the

form of CDs, nightshirts riffing on hot flashes and lots of chocolate. It’s currently in a perpetual Vegas run, but wherever it plays, moms and daughters meet: the former come to celebrate the power of life apres-estrogen, the latter to find out what’s in store for them.

Its production design is like a cabaret piece that got very big. It’s one set, representing the doors of New York City’s Bloomingdale’s (the London version stages at the doors of Marks and Spencer). The characters have a chance meeting and tour the store, floor by floor.

First is a no-nonsense businesswoman (Wydetta Carter, an original member of the Chicago M:TM company) who

is billed as Professional Woman. The vintage hippie “Earth Mother” (Kittra Coomer) has a platinum peaked haircut and a clashing Indian print outfit.

Next is the eager-to-please Iowa Housewife (South Coast Rep vet Karen Gedissman, also billed as the show’s dance captain) in a conservative suit on the gray side of yellow-green.

This entertainment has always been successful in tourist towns, so it’s canny that one of the characters is an out-oftowner. Fourth among them is the Soap Star, an aging actress from One Life to Lose. She’s played by Cherie Price, who has been with various M:TM companies for more than a decade.

Linders’ book chronicles the effects of menopause: hot flashes, emotional outbursts, sleeplessness, the consumption of meds, strife with mothers and weight gain. (“I used to be a size 2!” “Yeah, so is my right leg!”) As the off-stage toilet flushes suggest—ever a crowd-pleaser, that sound effect— rebellious bladders are also a prob. A barrage of Mad Magazine-style song parodies propel the action: “Chain of Fools” becomes “Change of Life,” for instance. The Bee Gees’ “Stayin’ Alive”

mutates into an ode to insomnia, “Staying Awake.” (“Whether you’re a sister, or whether you’re a mother, you’re staying awake.”) Here, by Price, are two different versions of “I’m Having a Hot Flash” set to Irving Berlin’s “We’re Having a Heat Wave,” first at rhumba and then at Marilyn Monroe-tempo.

It’s mutual bonding all around by the time vibrators come out. Before that, Carter’s flawless Tina Turner impersonation stopped everything in its tracks. Carter is a lady of size with a grand voice, and there are many times when the show tilts so far in her direction that you don’t think the other three can match her. But they all do something impressive. In Gedissman’s case, it’s a bit of Lucille Ball-worthy pantomime as she tries to squeeze herself into a piece of complicated black lingerie apparently sized for a Barbie doll.

Coomer, who toured with this show in the Pacific Northwest, does the Berkeley-style aging woman in comfortable shoes pretty much perfectly; her character can stop any conversation with the phrase “Back in the ’60s…” And Price, finishing up, togged in satin-print tiger jammies, does a sharp performance of a challenging song, Bacharach-David’s “Don’t Make Me Over,” sung as a plea for plastic surgery (“Please Make Me Over”).

You don’t dissect froth as if it were a frog, but M:TM is a little bemusing. It’s a tribal musical, heavily franchised, playing from here to Kuala Lumpur. It calls out those who weathered menopause for some honor and applause. It makes donations to women’s causes, while at the same time plugging retail therapy at a big-name department store. Still, it’s strange to see the international branding of something that’s unfun and unavoidable, something that often ends with so many women being declared redundant by the cruelty of the market.

It’s the lighter side of a seriously painful process. Maybe, if this property is renovated later on for newer songs, it could get slightly angrier—perhaps less Brenda Lee and a little more Patti Smith?

LIKE SO MANY Americans in the ’60s, Paul J. Smith yearned to see a world outside of his own.

Luckily for him, traveling was a part of his trade. When he became the director of New York’s Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) in 1963, Smith embarked on a series of journeys around the globe, amassing a range of ethnographic textiles from Asia, Africa and Central and South America. It’s all been tucked away in in storage for years—until now.

For the first time in his career, Smith will be sharing a portion of his personal collection at the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles (SJMQT).

The exhibit—titled “A Geographical Journey”—offers a panorama of the various places that Smith visited during his travels abroad. Whether it be a tie-dyed kimono from Japan or a brightly beaded bag from Mexico, each of the works stands as a vivid document of the culture from which it originated.

The collection covers a wide swath of centuries-old traditions in fiber arts, like weaving and appliqué, “A Geographical which continue to inspire artists and artisans today.

“What is interesting is how contemporary culture sometimes enters into the context,” he says.

Other notable pieces in the collection include two phulkari shawls from India. Phulkari, which literally translates to “flower work,” is a labor-intensive embroidery technique from the Punjab region that consists of vibrant silk patterns on plain-woven cotton cloth. These are often worn by women on special occasions. There will also be a stunning pair of sequin-embellished Vodou flags on display.

“These beautiful cloth pieces give us insight into how other cultures live, think and create,” says Amy DiPlacido, curator of exhibitions at the SJMQT. Located in the Turner and Gilliland galleries, “A Geographical Journey: The Paul J. Smith Textile Collection” opens Jan. 19 and runs through April 15.

Smith, who is currently the director emeritus of the MAD, has organized more than 200 exhibitions within the past 50 years and is best known for his innovative curatorial works in the American studio craft movement. On Jan. 28, he will give a lecture on the last 100 years of fiber art history in America at the SJMQT. Tickets are available on the museum’s website. —Camille Miller

P.T. Anderson delivers one of his best films with help from Daniel Day-Lewis

F THE JOB of a film is to immerse you into another world, its customs, its music, its glitter and its rottenness, Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Phantom Thread fulfills its mission beautifully. It’s worth the journey to San Francisco or elsewhere to see it in 70mm, to admire the texture of Anderson’s version of the past, using location work rather than digital images.

There hasn’t been a film in a long time—1989’s Scandal might be the

last—that conjures up the underside of post-war English luxury. Here it’s a nation balanced between a pair of shocks—first, the trauma of World War II, and second, the youth rebellion of the early 1960s. Soon will come the Beatles and their kind, all refusing to take these stiff courtiers as seriously as they took themselves.

The antagonist, Reynolds Woodcock (Daniel Day-Lewis), is a real stick insect, the kind of arrogant, solitary man they used to call “a confirmed bachelor.”

He’s a celebrated designer who lives with his formidable sister Cyril (Lesley Manville); her main attribute is a pair of half-glasses that she stares through at her social inferiors. In

Shakespeare’s phrase, the springe [trap] to catch this Woodcock is a waitress of mysterious Germanic heritage, whom he encounters one morning at a seaside café. Charmingly clumsy and with an uncontrollable blush, Alma (the Luxembourger actress Vicky Krieps) notes down Reynolds’ immense breakfast order. Then she gives up her requested phone number, dedicating the note “to my hungry boy.”

At the beginning flash-forward, Alma shows off a satisfied, plushlipped smile, as she tells a friend about how she pleasured this exacting man by giving him every part of her. In truth, the sex is all in the glance. The scopophiliac tease in the trailer of this film is the shot of an eye peering into a spy hole. This turns out to be the eye of a boss surveying the work of a squad of elderly seamstresses.

What Anderson sums up is neither voyeurism nor (Inherent) English Vice—seeing how tightly wound Woodcock is, you expect him to bring out the paddle or the riding crop. Reynolds is a workaholic, and his obsession with his designs and his

fabrics tunes Alma out. Her loneliness is much to the satisfaction of Cyril, the dragon sister with her man’s name.

Anderson claims that The Phantom Thread is a gothic tale—like Jane Eyre’s Rochester, Woodcock is made to falter, rising to love a woman loyal enough to survive his scorn. And it’s like the dynamics in Rebecca (1940) with Manville as the Mrs. Danvers character.

The perverse difference is that Alma finds a way to bring Woodcock low, and it’s not through her sterling character—it’s via her desire to be the nursemaid of the immobile man. We have signs of Woodcock’s tenderness— he’s haunted by the stock-still ghost of his mother, and the hollow voice sounds like he’s in the grave already.

Anderson violates Day-Lewis’s interesting terseness by allowing him to improvise away when he rages, to repeat himself and to swear; as in the final bludgeoning scene of There Will Be Blood, we’re watching Day-Lewis spin his wheels.

Jonny Greenwood’s superb score of lush jazz—reminiscent of John Dankworth and John Barry—suffuses the movie. The settings are fascinating, slightly alien: the Wedgwood-like plaster ornaments in the halls and the embarrassing wedding between Woodcock’s large, drunken aunt and a younger fortune-hunter modeled on Porfirio Rubirosa. The film caps with a phantasmagorical New Year’s Eve celebration—like Baz Luhrmann, only in good taste.

Despite Anderson’s distractingly clumsy tale-telling, the film is one of his best. This kind of romance gives him less plot to trip over. Day-Lewis has aged strikingly, with his aquiline profile and widow’s peak—if he were a hack, he could easily play either Dracula or Sherlock Holmes. But we know very little about Alma, less about her than any gothic heroine who could be named. We’re not even sure about Alma’s accent or where she came from. Day-Lewis represents some glowering male principle of obsession and possession—yet Krieps’ Alma seems to win this struggle because she represents only herself.

HE GENRE OF country rock has its origins in West Coast bands of the late 1960s, including late-period Byrds, the Flying Burrito Brothers, Buffalo Springfield and Poco. And while perhaps the biggest claim to fame enjoyed by Poco is its reputation as a kind of “farm team” for big-league, higher-profile acts, the band co-founded in 1968 by pedal steel guitarist Rusty Young has amassed an impressive body of work.

Though he describes himself as semi-retired, Young recently released a solo album, Waitin’ for the Sun. And he still leads a lineup of Poco today.

The earliest lineup of Poco, as showcased on the group’s debut album, Pickin’ up the Pieces, featured Young along with Richie Furay and Jim Messina (both from Buffalo Springfield), as well as Randy Meisner and George Grantham. By the early ’70s, Messina had left, replaced by guitarist Paul Cotton; bassist Meisner had also left, and his place was taken

by Timothy B. Schmit.

Messina went on to form a successful duo with Kenny Loggins, enjoying several hit albums and

singles including “Your Mama Don’t Dance.” Meisner and Schmit both eventually landed in the Eagles, perhaps the most successful of all country-leaning rock bands. “I do wish the [original] band could have stayed together,” Young says, noting that the first lineup didn’t even last through the making of that first album.

But Young isn’t bitter about the way things went. “I’m proud of how the guys went on,” he says. “I always believed in those guys a lot, and so when they went onto that kind of success, it made me feel great.”

Meanwhile, Young kept the Poco fires burning. He guided the band through many lineup changes and is the only musician to appear on every one of the group’s more than two dozen albums. By 1978, he was the sole remaining original member, leading the band as it enjoyed some of the biggest hits of its career.

“Crazy Love” and “Heart of the Night” (both from 1979’s Legend) rose high on the singles charts in both the U.S. and Canada.

Young announced his retirement

from performance in 2015. “That was the plan,” he says with a chuckle, but apparently he couldn’t stay away.

“I wasn’t gonna completely retire,” he says today. “I just wanted to do things that were fun, like going out and playing with my friends like Jimmy [Messina] and Richie [Furay], and maybe a Poco show here and there.” And he’s been doing that ever since; Poco’s Jan. 20 show in Saratoga kicks off a string of more than 15 performances for Young— either with the band, solo, or with some of those friends.

Young recalls a fan who approached him backstage after a show not long ago. “He said, ‘Have you ever thought about doing a solo record? I’ve got a label, and we’d love to sign you.’” In all his years as a professional musician, Young had never made a solo record, so he agreed. Waitin’ for the Sun displays both his skills on pedal steel guitar and his songwriting.

And it features a familiar cast backing Young on its 10 tracks.

The current members of Poco all play on the album. “They’re the best musicians I know,” Young says. “And we’ve played together so much, whatever I’m thinking of, they know how to play it.” And several of Young’s former bandmates guest on the record as well, including all members of the band that made 1969’s Pickin’ Up the Pieces.

Poco’s live shows feature several of Young’s solo songs, but for the most part his concerts focus on the hits.

“We’re doing the songs that people who come to the show are expecting to hear,” Young says.

Over the years, Young's role within his band has changed. He says that early on, his job was “to provide all those background instruments.”

These days, he focuses on writing songs, and singing. “But yet, I still play dobro, mandolin, lap steel and guitar in the band,” he notes. “I’m a better musician than I was back then. And these guys that I’m playing with in Poco are as good as, or better than, anyone I’ve ever played with.”

East Side Story Exploring the cultural geography of San Jose’s East Side

ROM THE KING Road side of Mexican Heritage Plaza, I look west down a side street and see the top of the Fairmont Hotel in the distance. I can also see the Marriott. This is how close East San Jose is to downtown. Geographically challenged people often think of the East Side as “out there” when it really isn’t.

Even worse, those who live throughout the rest of San Jose, many of whom haven’t ventured east of 10th Street, mistake East San Jo for

some guerrilla warfare barrio riddled with undesirables.

“This is not the set of Colors, the movie,” says Tamara Alvarado, executive director of the School of Arts and Culture at Mexican Heritage Plaza, as we walk south down King Road toward San Antonio Street. “If you go up into the hills, it’s like, ‘Wow.’ That’s what gets people. There’s a lot of economic and ethnic diversity.”

The East Side features affluent neighborhoods and not-so-affluent neighborhoods, with Mayfair being a gloriously incongruous hodgepodge of both. I’m here to explore, Alvarado being the best tour guide. All of

Mayfair—the historical markers, the social activities, community meetings, and the School of Arts and Culture— forms a nexus of self-reflection for inhabitants of the area. Stories of Cesar Chavez emerge in the churches and side streets. The School of Arts and Culture continues to play a serious role in not only activating the thrice-failed Mexican Heritage Plaza, but in steering young kids away from street gangs and into the arts.

Within moments we’re heading east on San Antonio toward the fog-drenched hills, somewhat green thanks to a recent spout of rain. On the street, we spot gang graffiti but also spend time raving over the efforts of Somos Mayfair, a community group fighting for social justice, arts education and the empowerment of youth.

Of course, any visit to this area requires a pit stop at El Perrin, a lively orange-colored Mexican restaurant.

We pop in just as old ’70s Los Bukis tunes emanate from the system and plenty of neighborhood people are packing the place.

Our bellies filled with nopales and fiery salsa, we then arrive at McDonnell Hall, in the parking lot behind Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, where Cesar Chavez first cut his chops in community organizing. A slick historical plaque, installed a few years ago, fills in the details.

Chavez used to live nearby, so we continue east down San Antonio past a few stagnant RVs and an old Mexican dude selling corn. Moving up Scharff Avenue toward Chavez’s boyhood home, I can’t help but appreciate the landscape.

Faded tract houses dominate, but thankfully without identical manicured lawns. Each parcel seems different.

Each has character. Various eras are represented, from old Victorians to new duplexes. A sense of historical continuity manifests itself—exactly what doesn’t happen in many other parts of San Jose.

Across the street, a red-and-white banner from Chivas, Guadalajara’s legendary soccer club, hangs on a garage door.

One front yard features a ramshackle Buddhist shrine bordering on avantgarde thrift store sculpture, while other lots are landscaped with gloriously downmarket assemblages from a variety of natural and man-made materials.

“It’s not decoration,” Alvarado notes. “It’s not for people in other neighborhoods to come see. It’s for us. We do this for ourselves. To show ourselves to ourselves.”

And another thing. Cacti seem omnipresent.

“We grow it, we eat it, we celebrate it, we paint it,” Alvarado says. “If I don’t see cactus everywhere in this neighborhood, then I’ll know it’s all over.”

The old house where Cesar Chavez once lived is designated with another historical marker. The neighbors are accustomed to weirdos rambling by to take pictures, so Alvarado and I are clear to lurk on the sidewalk. No one seems to mind. Only then do we circle back along Alum Rock to the Mexican Heritage Plaza. Alvarado says now that Mayfair has planted roots, the next step is to move beyond survival mode and into a position of hope.

“It’s not necessarily because we want the west side of San Jose to come here,” she says. “It’s really more for internal community purposes. The more we know ourselves, the better we value ourselves, the better we value our assets, our cultural assets, our spiritual aspects, the beauty, the aesthetics of the things, and the social services agencies that are here.”

EGGZACTLY Pot Belly Ramen satiates a ramen-starved East Side.

ESPITE BEING THE unofficial national dish of Japan— sorry, sushi lovers—it turns out that ramen originally hailed from China.

Regardless of its worldwide popularity, there are probably only around a dozen legit ramen shops in the entire South Bay—but the newest entrant, Pot Belly Ramen, is making heads turn on San Jose’s East Side.

Located in a cramped strip mall in the shadow of the forthcoming BART station, Pot Belly Ramen is drawing huge crowds that fill the sidewalk only a half-hour after opening. They are currently only open for dinner (MondaySaturday 5:30-9pm) and this limited availability might be adding to the phenomenon. The interior is modest, well-lit and arranged as well as can be expected to maximize seating without being too uncomfortable. Fortunately, we arrived early and didn’t have to wait before we were seated.

They have an interesting ordering system. Each patron is handed a clipboard, paper menu and pencil to place check marks next to the items they want.

There’s a choice of five different ramens, including add-ons, as well as a changing list of appetizers on the back; with sake and beer still to come. We decided to order their tuna onigiri ($3.50), and it wouldn’t be a ramen escapade without getting some karaage ($7). Now for the soup: the eponymous Pot Belly ($14) and Truffle ($14) seemed like the right call.

First out was the onigiri, and imagine our surprise when the crunchy fried brown rice was topped with what appeared to be canned tuna. After one taste—and suspicions confirmed—I’ll be kind and just say to skip this item. Next up was the karaage, which was executed properly; the chicken was moist, and the light, crunchy batter made for one of the better karaages I’ve had in recent memory.

Finally, the ramens showed up, and both had that signature white, milky broth that comes with a properly made tonkotsu. All of Pot Belly’s ramens—except their veggie, of course—are made using their 12-hour, slowsimmered bone broth. The truffle ramen had a strong smell of truffle oil, which made us apprehensive, but after one taste it was actually seasoned just right. The broth itself was tasty and nuanced.

The noodles they use have a whitish color and not the yellow you’ll find in the typical soba (wheat) noodle; this gave them a spaghetti-like taste and consistency. The pork cheek found in the Pot Belly and the pork belly chashu in the Truffle are both cooked using the sous vide method, which makes for tender but slightly under-seasoned meats. Overall, it was an acceptable bowl that satisfied our craving. —John Dyke

PSCALE WITH A bit of eccentricity seems to be the District San Jose way. The new tapas restaurant has a sleek peninsula-shaped bar that stands in contrast to austere exposed brick walls. On a recent holiday evening, a Sharks game played on one screen while It’s a Wonderful Life played on another. A color-coded mat for Twister even found a home in the comfy, dimly lit confines, suggesting things could get fun, or weird, or both, at any moment.

The newest addition to San Pedro Square—ownership also runs restaurants that go by the same name in San Francisco and Oakland, as well as an eatery (Martins West) in Redwood City—District has an ambiance best suited for groups, so I brought a motley crew.

We began with the Warm Barrata ($16), which comes as one would hope—a thick mound of gooey cheese that tears apart with deft crostini scoops. It had a bit of a chocolate pudding taste, for reasons I’ll admit I’m too dim to understand; get off my lawn. Meanwhile, the figs ($9) needed no culinary expertise, as they were delicious.

Chicken wings ($11), surprisingly enough, were the biggest stars of the meal.

As a consumer who requires bibs (multiple), I generally refrain from finger foods. Too much sauce on the face or surrounding walls is usually poor form in public. But these wings were crispy and seasoned to specification, making for a manageable affair when pairing the bird with the excellent peanut sauce.

The hangar steak ($16) and its rich dipping sauce finished a close second.

The Tempura Avocado ($8) reminded me of a panko-crusted variation of the dish found at Zona Rosa, one of my favorite restaurants over the last few years.

The deep-fried delights melt in one’s mouth and the chipotle aioli was excellent.

While it might not have matched Zona Rosa’s high bar, it didn’t disappoint.

Lamb meatballs ($11.50) provided another small plate worthy of admiration, as greedy forks flashed for meat and swipes of the delicious tomato sauce.

The Steak Tartare ($17) came with a citrus-sweet jam that worked surprisingly well with gruyere-covered bread, while the Pistachio Pesto Pizza ($17) could have used a spicy kick or more sausage. The pie still played well with the CrossFitter at the table, perhaps because he hadn’t had a carb since Harvey Weinstein was still a hell of a guy.

District, like all new restaurants, is still finding its way, but the latest addition to San Pedro Square suggests the nightlife district is moving in the right direction. —Josh Koehn
