Lease Contortions When VERONICA CRUZ opened her yoga studio in San Jose’s SoFA District eight years ago, the neighborhood wasn’t the hotspot it is today. South First was a quieter place and Downtown Yoga Shala, along with a handful of others, weathered the economic downturn.

Cruz says gym owners DJ DOWNS and DANIELLE VALLEY approached her about setting up shop on the second floor. Cruz worked out a verbal agreement, she says, and then informed her landlord, RICHARD BERG, that she would move out in November. Berg promptly put up a “for lease” sign and found a new tenant in Heroes Martial Arts owner ALAN “GUMBY” MARQUES, whose historic building is being displaced by The Core Companies’ high-rise plans.

But as the date was nearing for Cruz’s move, she took off for Europe and Third Space found another tenant, leaving one of the South Bay’s oldest yoga studios in jeopardy of going homeless. Downs and Valley didn’t immediately respond to Fly’s requests for comment. Cruz blames her own naiveté for the botched deal, and she says the Downtown Association has been trying to find her a temporary spot across the street in a row of lowslung buildings slated for demolition to make way for Core’s development.

Meanwhile, Cruz will hold a “twilight party” to mark the departure from the studio that she and many of her clients have come to consider not a “third space,” but a second home.

Recent wildfires remind we’re living in new climate with new dangers

S I WALKED among the embers of what was the Coffey Park neighborhood, my eyes burned from the smoke as I watched weeping residents gaze at where their homes once stood. I was shocked not only by the devastation, but by the fact that a wildfire could reach so far into a city.

Wildfires are supposed to stay in wildlands, not move into subdivisions with busy intersections, schools and restaurants. Of course, fires don’t follow any such rules. But if a working-class neighborhood in Santa Rosa could fall victim to a wildfire raging down the hills like a

flash flood, what neighborhood can truly claim to be safe?

Indeed, Coffey Park was outside of the city’s “very severe” hazard zone.

As the Los Angeles Times reported, that meant these homes were exempt from regulations to make them more fire-resistant. It’s not clear how such precautions would have protected the neighborhood from the earlymorning firestorm on Oct. 9. More than 1,200 homes were incinerated in a matter of minutes.

This wasn’t city or state negligence, but rather a chilling testament that we live in a different era of fire danger. The climate has changed and so have the risks. This is the terrifying new normal.

PG&E power lines, whipping and sparking due to heavy winds, most likely triggered this month’s catastrophic Wine Country fires, but evidence shows that climate change built the weapon and aimed it right at the North Bay. And as

last week’s wildfires in Santa Cruz and Monterey counties show, we remain under the gun here in the South Bay. From the most destructive hurricane season on record to the devastating fires still burning across the Bay Area, the reality is devastatingly clear: the climate has changed and the conditions for fires will only intensify. It was just two years ago that that the Valley fire exploded in the parched hills of Lake, Napa and northern Sonoma counties, burning 76,000 acres and 1,350 homes and killing three. Since the latest conflagration began on Oct. 9 and grew to a peak of 21 concurrent blazes, fire scorched more than 245,000 acres, chased more than 100,000 people from their homes and destroyed about 8,400 structures — almost exclusively in the North Bay. At least 42 civilians have died in the fires, making them the deadliest and most destructive wildfires in California history.

“That’s the way it is with a warming climate, dry weather and reduced moisture,” Gov. Jerry Brown said in a news conference. “These kinds of catastrophes have happened, and they are going to continue to happen.”

wildfires can be indirect, he says, research shows that increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere leads to rapid but less viable plant growth, resulting in more fuel for fire. “It’s almost like we’re growing junk food with more CO2 in the atmosphere,” Heinberg says. On a larger scale, data show that California is moving into a hotter and drier climate.

“The 20th century was a wet spell for California,” Heinberg adds.

City officials say Santa Rosa will rebuild and will be “better than before.”

But better in what way?

While Gov. Brown admirably sounds the climate change alarm, human adaptations are not keeping pace with the explosive conditions on the ground.

In an essay called the “The Devil in Wine Country,” set to be published in the London Review of Books, Mike Davis, author of Ecology of Fear: Los Angeles and the Imaginations of Disaster, expects “[w]e’ll continue to send sprawl into our fire-dependent ecosystems with the expectation that firefighters will risk their lives to defend each new McMansion, and an insurance system that spreads costs across all homeowners will promptly replace whatever is lost.”

Ann Hancock, executive director of Santa Rosa’s Center for Climate Protection, says that when the time is right, she hopes the conversation centers on reducing the impacts of climate change. “It’s not too early to start thinking about that, so long as the people who are suffering are taken care of,” she says. Local measures such as better forest management and more defensible space are important, but her organization focuses on bringing down the greenhouse gas emissions that got us into this crisis. “It’s is a wholesale systemic change,” she says, “and that’s overwhelming for most people to think about—and yet we have to.”

When the North Bay rebuilds, Heinberg calls for building great resiliency into local infrastructure that can better withstand future disasters: redundant electric and water systems, and larger inventories of food and supplies. With climate change exacerbating the risks, he says, the region should deepen its investment in mass transit, zero-energy buildings and clean energy. “Ultimately, though, what all this suggests is we need to build differently, change our patterns of living and build a lot more resilience into our whole society, because we unquestionably have more disasters on the way of different kinds, not just wildfires.”

been a fact of life. Fire plays an important ecological role in the chaparral and conifer forest ecosystems. Problems arise when people choose to live in those fire-prone environments. The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection and local fire departments mandate property owners carve out a ring of “defensible space” to help defend against wildfires. But there’s little chance of fending off wind-whipped fires of such intensity and speed.

“We know that Northern California’s climate has changed,” says Noah Diffenbaugh, a climate scientist at Stanford University, “and we’re in a climate that’s different than when a lot of what we have on the landscape was designed and built.” Climate plays an important role in wildfire risk, but it’s not the only influence, Diffenbaugh says.

Human elements such as ignition, forest management and where and how we build also play a role. But climate change is the biggest human element of all.

“Climate sets the stage, and we have strong evidence that the global warming that’s already happened has increased wildfire risk in the Western United States through the effects of temperature drying the landscape,” Diffenbaugh says. “For this particular event, we can really see the impacts of heat. We had record hot conditions during the drought. We had record high temperatures that coincided with record low precipitation that created the most severe drought on record that killed tens of millions of trees.

Those record drought conditions were followed by extremely wet conditions this winter, that were again followed by record hot conditions.”

Rising temperatures also lead to less snowfall in the Sierra and earlier melting of that snow, meaning there is less runoff available during the hot, dry days of fall.

In California, Diffenbaugh notes, low precipitation levels are twice as likely to produce drought if they coincide with warm conditions. “Overall, we’ve seen a doubling in frequency of drought in California in recent decades.” The eastto-west Diablo winds that fanned the flames, reaching hurricane strength at higher elevations, may also be pegged to climate change, Diffenbaugh says.

Richard Heinberg, a fellow at the Post Carbon Institute, a nonprofit think tank focused on climate change and sustainability issues, lives in Santa Rosa and evacuated his home the first night of the fire. His house was spared. While the links between climate change and

IELDING A SKULL-topped scepter and decked out in demented makeup, Brian Miller looks very much the part. The ringleader of a gang of killer clowns, he has schooled his motley crew in the art of lurking. They hide behind bushes and around blind corners—waiting for an opportunity to set upon a young victim.

Welcome to Jester Town—one of three new “Scare Zones” at Great America’s 10th annual Halloween Haunt. Wedged between the Flight Deck and Patriot roller coasters, the town is populated by a multitude of sinister harlequins, all hell-bent on coaxing a cry from park patrons.

Mentoring young jump-scare artists is just part of what Miller oversees in his role as entertainment production coordinator at Great America. He is also active in the local performing arts community. A theater major with a background in sound design, Miller

helped put together creepy audio clips for this year’s Haunt; he has also worked for the San Jose Stage Company, serving as a production manager during the theater organization’s 201516 season and as company manager during the 2016-17 season.

His background is typical for many who work on this spooky seasonal event, which park representatives estimate employs upwards of 700 additional workers during late September and all of October. Sean Lee, entertainment manager for Great America, says the park brings on about 400-500 monster actors and 250 behind-the-scenes contractors for the Haunt. This includes local artists, carpenters, sound designers, makeup professionals and, of course, legions of young men and women just itching to jump out at visitors from dark corners and yell “boo.”

Witchy Warning I t’s approaching 7pm on Friday evening, Sept. 22—the Haunt’s opening night—and a hoard of teenagers gathers around the large reflecting pool at Great America. With a couple monkeys in tow, Wizard of Oz style, she explains what the park’s got in store for visitors this year. Her shrill, prerecorded voice plays over the PA system as the actor in the costume pantomimes along.

The witch hypes new visual effects that have been added to The Demon roller coaster and the overhauled Scare Zones—which include Underworld Alley and Feary Tales, in addition to Jester Town. In a surreal moment, the witch makes a veiled reference to Donald Trump: “Confused by the current political climate?” She promises it’s nothing compared with the new, disorienting maze called Chaos House.

Then the demon makes his entrance. Lumbering down a catwalk extending into the pool, he stops and begins his speech. He conjures flames from the water before him—a pretty cool trick—and fire spouts up in hot columns around the edge of the pool. He issues a guttural, ghoulish laugh and the kids are set loose.

The Backwoods It’s midafternoon, a little more than a week before the witch and her demon open the Haunt. Instead of the whoosh of roller coasters, the air above Great

America is filled with the clattering of hammers, the buzzing of saws and the various squeals and ominous, eerie tones emanating from the park’s newest, and as-yet-unfinished haunted maze.

The entrance is located behind the Gold Striker roller coaster, and the maze’s façade resembles an Appalachian front porch. It’s the kind of setting that would make for a nice, relaxing evening of sipping bourbon in Adirondack chairs, surveying the sweep of the Great Smoky Mountains.

Or, it could portend something far more sinister—a la Deliverance.

Dubbed the Backwoods, the maze is billed as a “bayou hunting resort and spa” where “people have been disappearing and creatures are lurking in the shadows.”

Upon entering, guests are greeted by a jump-scare concierge and a litany of increasingly creepy clues that something is not right on the bayou. Progressing through a warren of interconnected, swampy cabins, it becomes clearer that werewolves are mixed up in this mess. In each room, different soundtracks help tell the story.

And, of course, the cast of actors keep visitors on their toes. On opening night, guests are preoccupied with sniffing out the next boogeyman—as they should be, distracted from the fact that

HANGING TOUGH Lacey Bryant uses the experience—and money—she earns from Halloween Haunt to support her work as a full-time artist.

every single element in Backwoods had to be designed and built.

From the front porch, to the individualized soundtracks of each space, down to the strands of yarn and newspaper clippings that crisscross the wall of the conspiracy theory cabin, entertainment manager Lee estimates that nearly two months of full-time work went into creating Backwoods.

The haunted maze has been constructed inside what used to be an IMAX movie theater. Plastic basins have been installed beneath the boardwalks connecting the cabins, so water can be pumped in Pirates of the Caribbean-style. Catherine Lucas, operations supervisor of productions and props for the Halloween Haunt, ticks off the list of things most guests don’t consider, like the time it takes to fabricate all the props, build walls or paint rooms. “The small details of everything,” she says. “Where things go. How it’s secured down. How many people it actually takes to put it together.”

On opening night, the line for Backwoods is quite long and it’s not immediately clear if guests are listening intently to what the DJ is saying in between the contemporary country hits that play over the loudspeakers.

Those who tune their ears to the DJ will hear him dropping hints here and there that he was bitten by something earlier in the day and that he is starting to feel strangely drawn to the moon. All of this comes courtesy of Evan Fitch and his team—which includes Miller, the part-time jester, who provided the vocal performance for the prerecorded faux radio spots.

Fitch, supervisor of entertainment and tech services for the Halloween Haunt, explains that Miller’s on-air character helps drive the story of Backwoods. “Once you get into the first cabin, you progress to the next part of the story where he transforms, he goes and he eats the intern and he runs free,” he says.

While the build team works to construct the physical spaces guests will move through, and the lighting and sound teams get the atmosphere right, visual artist and longtime Great America contractor Lacey Bryant works to make the mazes feel as though they have been lived in.

Bryant uses stencils to create wallpaper patterns, paints the floors to look like tile or old wooden planks and produces unsettling family portraits.

Those plugged in to the local art scene know Bryant well. Late last year Empire Seven Studios in San Jose’s Japantown hosted her solo show “Homeward.” She’s also exhibited in spaces in San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Working the Haunt is an ideal job for Bryant, who has helped out with special Halloween events and the park’s annual holiday fair for more than a decade. While many working artists tend bar or wait tables in order to make rent, Bryant counts herself fortunate for the Great America gig.

“This is what I do to pay the bills,” she says. But it’s more than that. In the time she’s spent working the Haunt, Bryant has honed her skills as an artist. “Everything I learn here, I can put into my work.”

That includes time management.

Bryant has many of her duties down to a science. She can produce a large creepy painting in about 20 minutes, which is essential with the park’s demanding deadlines.

Perhaps no one on the Halloween Haunt team is as acutely aware of deadline pressures as Jenn Majdi, operations supervisor for makeup.

Majdi, who works year-round at the park, says that the demand for makeup is most intense during the fall festival, when she and her team of 32 apply face paint, affix wigs and glue prosthetic latex masks to around 300 actors every night of the event. (Shows run Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights through the end of October.)

The makeup team moves through the entire queue of monsters, freaks, deranged clowns and other ghastly creatures in about three and a half hours. They are able to achieve this level of efficiency each night through practice and a well-defined game plan.

“The artists know and they practice

to get their looks down to 20 minutes each,” Majdi says. “And all the artists are given specific assigned characters. And they do those exact same characters at the exact same time every night, so that they can perfect that time frame.”

Jesse Anderson plays one of the monsters on this year’s zombie roster.

Speaking with him, it becomes clear that dressing up as a reanimated corpse is more than just a quirky seasonal gig.

The way Anderson tells it, when he was around 8 years old he had a magical Halloween experience. “One year, I don’t know what happened, but everyone just decided to pull out all the stops and just do insane costumes with an amazing amount of detail,” he says.

“Just being able to be in the middle of all that—tromping around like a group of monsters who looked like we just crawled out of the TV—was just … there’s nothing like it.”

Anderson imagines that most people on the Haunt cast of performers have a similar story. “Pretty much everyone who does a monster here has a special connection to Halloween, in general,” he says. “So coming in and being able to do that professionally is really a dream—it’s amazing.”

Psycho Swirl Back in Jester Town on opening night, it’s easy enough to escape the packs of jeering jokers—if one is willing to step into one of Bryant’s new mazes, Chaos House.

Upon entering the room, a thick cloud of stage smoke and strobe lights add to the confusion of the myriad angled mirrors lining the walls. Black and white patterns on the floor add to the confusion and prevent those navigating the maze from easily picking out a clear path. In a few of the rooms within the maze, concentric circles and wavy lines on the ground work in concert with the strobes to make it seem as if the floor is shifting underfoot.

The optical illusion is indeed disorienting. So much so, that the wicked witch’s seemingly over-the-top Trump allusion comes rushing back to mind—along with something Bryant had said just a week prior: “I think Chaos House is just going to blow people out of the water.”

It seems that both she and her friend in the pointy cap were right.

The revolution also paved the way for some of the most interesting art of the period. In this collection, “The Crown Under the Hammer: Russia, Romanovs, Revolution,” will feature illuminating documents and art produced during the tumultuous period of transition, including posters promoting the unification of the world’s working class. Their last single, “Blood Bunny” is a heavy fog of melancholic guitar interludes.

The orchestra, along with special guest vocalist Carly Honfi, plan to deliver parodies like the “Shagadelic Suite”—from the late-’90s spy-flick spoof Austin Powers—and their famous “Concerto to End All Concertos,” a ridiculously epic number. Growing up in the Cypress Village projects in West Oakland is tough.

Especially when you go from hustling candy bars to pushing work. Unlike the stripped-down beats and absurdist view of street life trotted out by his hyphy predecessors, Stalin takes a bleaker, more serious tone over gooey beats that borrow from the G-funk-infused instrumentals of the mid-’90s Bay Area scene.

When Stalin released his album Gas Nation in 2008 at the height of the hyphy movement’s popularity, E-40 and Too $hort hailed him as Oakland’s next breakout rapper. Stalin hosts a record release party at BackBar for his upcoming Gas Nation 2. (AJ)

New book ‘Veeptopus’ has deep sea fun with the vice presidency

A

FEW YEARS ago, after getting laid off from Yahoo, I decided to reinvent my life in the most rational way possible: I drew portraits of America’s vice presidents with octopuses on their heads.

The pictures seemed to have struck a chord with people because they gave me a pile of money on Kickstarter last year to turn the pictures into a book called Veeptopus: Vice Presidents with Octopuses on Their Heads. Life is funny sometimes.

My fascination with the vice presidency started when I was 5, flipping

through a copy of Newsweek. Walter Mondale was on the cover, standing sheepishly behind Jimmy Carter. “What does a vice president do?” I asked my mom. “Go to funerals, mostly,” she said.

This seemed impossible. How could the No. 2 guy in America just go to funerals?

The answer, as it turns out, is that Founding Fathers just didn’t spend much time thinking about the office. The responsibilities of the vice presidency are described in one vaguely worded sentence in the Constitution (Article 2, Section 1, Clause 6 to be exact). It declares that the veep shall take over upon the president’s “Death, Resignation, or Inability to discharge the Powers and Duties…” That’s it.

In practice, the duties of the veep are maddeningly few. Vice President Charles Dawes, a man of great

ability—he won a Nobel Peace Prize and wrote a No. 1 pop hit—summed up the job like this: “I can do only two things here [in the Senate]. One of them is to sit up here on this rostrum and listen to you birds talk without the ability to reply. The other is to look at the newspapers every morning to see how the president’s health is.”

The job proved time and again to be purgatory for ambitious men. They were tantalizingly close to the apex of political power yet largely powerless and often ignored. America’s first VP, John Adams, complained, ”My country has in its wisdom contrived for me the most insignificant office that ever the invention of man contrived or his imagination conceived."

The vice presidency was considered so insignificant that President James Madison waited nearly a year to replace George Clinton—America’s fourth vice president, not the cosmic funk god— after he died. The office was regularly left veepless as, for whatever reason, vice presidents tended to expire on the job

more regularly than presidents during the 19th century. Madison had two die during his tenure.

Even alive, veeps got no respect.

Woodrow Wilson’s wife and close advisers kept Vice President Thomas Marshall in the dark for 18 months about the president’s incapacitating stroke, thus denying him the presidency.

A clearly ailing FDR only met with Truman once before he died in the middle of World War II. And LBJ so relentlessly teased Hubert Humphrey during Cabinet meetings that the veep reportedly broke down and cried. No wonder then that John Nance Garner, FDR’s first VP, said that the job wasn’t worth a “warm bucket of piss.”

In the past few decades, though, the profile of the office has risen. One reason is the close relationships that recent veeps since Walter Mondale managed to forge with their respective bosses, allowing them to command power within the White House.

Another reason is the 1967 passage of the 25th amendment, which sought to clarify the Constitutional vagueness that dogged two centuries of VPs. The amendment clearly spells out the line of succession and, so as to avoid another Woodrow Wilson farce, provides the mechanism to remove an enfeebled POTUS. That seemingly prosaic amendment developed a sensational cast since the 2016 election. As the rumors of Trump’s fragile mental health circulate, the internet has fantasized that Pence might use the 25th Amendment to oust the president. Even bloated white supremacist Steve Bannon thinks it’s a possibility. All of a sudden, the VP seems less a joke than an unlikely savior, assuming you feel that a vacuous religious zealot is marginally better than a trigger-happy, unhinged narcissist.

The office of the vice presidency might finally just get some respect.

And if that happens, I’ll have to think of some other animal instead of octopuses to bedeck vice presidents.

Cuttlefish, perhaps.

‘Meyerowitz Stories’ finds laughter amid tears, mirth in mayhem

ITNESS THE circumstances leading to a three-way public meltdown of the offspring of an elderly artist. The 80-ish artist couldn’t make it because he’s laid up in the hospital with a case of sepsis. The middle-age kids come to say a few words about the creation of a tabletop-size bronze, exhibited as part of a faculty retrospective at Bard College.

The piece represents a ball cracking in the jaws of a vice. Is it 1970s industrial minimalism, or an illustration of how

the superbly exasperating artist, one Harold Meyerowitz, unmanned his male children?

Perhaps the latter, suggests The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected).

In front of the crowd, Matthew Meyerowitz (Ben Stiller), suit-clad and bloody-nosed, tearfully recalls the awful childhood. Also upset are Matthew’s half-brother, Danny (Adam Sandler), and sister, Jean (Elizabeth Marvel). All three have the same question: if Harold Meyerowitz was not a great artist, was he, then, just a prick?

As Harold, Dustin Hoffman is at his very best. This honors the work Hoffman did when he was young— the prickliness, the haranguing.

The young Jewish prince has been promoted to Jewish emperor. He’s still able to cow his “adult children.”

up these guilt-racked disappointers.

Upon being reminded he was married four times, the old man corrects: “Three times—the first marriage was annulled.” Wife No. 4 is his caretaker, Maureen (Emma Thompson), always on the wet side of tipsy and the cook of inedible family meals The merit of Meyerowitz’s outof-fashion artwork ought to be immaterial. It’s all a matter of how at peace he is, and whether he can handle the success of old friends without coming unglued. He cannot.

Not the serenity of old age for him, but deathless stubbornness; nose in the air, head cocked, compassion for anyone else long vanished.

As in Chekhov, there is the matter of the old man’s estate: a New York apartment bought for $60 grand back in the day and now being sold for a huge profit. In the middle of negotiations, the old man collapses into an illness that his half-interested doctors say might be fatal. The Meyerowitz children are given pamphlets by the hospital, coaching

them to say to Harold “I love you, I forgive you, forgive me, goodbye.”

Writer and director Noah Baumbach (The Squid and the Whale) seems most on the side of the talented but unmotivated pianist son Danny. Danny is literally walking wounded, given that he’s got a mysterious limp. Stiller, always the best at knotted-up nebbishes, excels as a wealth-handling L.A. lawyer, loathed a little by all for his financial success. Sister Jean is shy and gray as a sparrow, with her long hair curtaining her face. She’s just as traumatized as her siblings, and she’s ready to punch back if she gets a chance.

The funny thing is Danny’s child Eliza (Grace Van Patten) is the lotus flower who grew up out of the Meyerowitz family swamp. As an incoming freshman at Bard, she’s creating alarming short films about sexual identity. Yet there’s no youthful resentment in her: hard to credit with this aggravated family.

She gets on the piano bench with her father and duets on a song he wrote for her when she was 9—a tough task for an 18-year-old. One suspects she’s here just to trick us into optimism with her youth, beauty and hope.

Such trickery aside, this is a spry, witty, comedy. Old Meyerowitz is such a familiar type in the worlds of art and academia that it’s surprising how little he’s depicted in American movies…outside of Woody Allen’s more moralizing dramas. One admires that coolness and dryness with which Baumbach shows how a fractious childhood leads to middleage panic, and how useless it is to try to think your way out of the craziness you were raised in.

The soundtrack is worthy, too: Randy Newman on solo piano. The closing credits roll over Newman’s 1972 “Old Man”—a lot more bitter and comfort-free than Neil Young’s take on the same subject that same year. It’s happy news that Newman is composing for a film that has his own acerbic tendencies as a songwriter.

It’s all work and even more play for post-hardcore vets Thrice

O

NCE IN THE O.C., always in the O.C. That’s how it goes for singer-guitarist Dustin Kensrue, currently kicking back at home in Irvine, California. In fact, three-fourths of posthardcore heroes Thrice call Orange County home.

Guitarist Teppei Teranishi is the only member to escape north to Palo Alto.

But thanks to technology, recording and writing music remotely isn’t an issue these days.

“Because we’re not living in the same spot we had to figure out a way to share ideas more effectively,” says Kensrue. “We’re still jamming a lot of these ideas and building them together but we were using this business program, Asana. It just helps keep all our conversations about songs all organized because it was a mess with emails.”

Whatever Thrice’s intentions might be, they’re working. The band’s latest album, 2016’s To Be Everywhere Is To Be Nowhere, sees

the four-piece go from a heavy, screamy band to a well-rounded rock machine. “I think To Be Everywhere sounds like it does because we were coming back fresh and not just reacting to what we had just made,” Kensrue says, referring to the five-year gap between this record and 2011’s Major/Minor. “We tend to react off of what we’ve just done. We didn’t have that this time because we hadn’t done anything recently, so it comes across a bit more balanced.”

The move away from a narrow aggro sound to something broader has been underway at least since 2009’s Beggars. The difference with To Be Everywhere is the number of moods woven into the whole: it can be poignant (“The Long Defeat”), ecstatic (“Wake Up”), grungy (“Blood on the Sand”) or evoke a lullabye,

like the six-plus-minute album closer (“Salt and Shadow”). “Black Honey,” a withering critique of U.S. foreign policy, is an earworm in a slew of catchy tracks. “It can apply to any narcissistic way of living, whether personal or political. I like how it works on micro and macro levels,” Kensrue says. On the other hand “Whistleblower” and “Death From Above” about Edward Snowden and military drones, respectively, are searing in their specificity.

The To Be Everywhere sessions also yielded the single “Sea Change.” The band released it back in April for Record Store Day, which, appropriately enough, coincided with Earth Day. Proceeds from the sale of the track benefit Climate Central, an organization that educates the media on environmental issues. Thrice is currently in the early stages of writing the next album. “We have a bunch of ideas that we’re working on, but they’re totally not developed at all. We’re in deepest part of the woods.” Though they had a long run with Vagrant Records, it’s uncertain as of press time who will put out the new album.

With a discography laced with literary references, it’s no surprise Kensrue is a serious reader. An updated edition of Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the Unites States, Wendell Berry’s Jayber Crow, and J.D. Salinger’s Franny and Zoë are a few he’s knocked out lately. Also not surprising for a crafter of memorable lyrics, he cites screenwriter bible Invisible Ink: A Practical Guide to Building Stories That Resonate by Brian McDonald. “That’s supposed to be required reading for people at Pixar,” he says. “I just feel like I have to nourish my brain and my soul before I can produce.”

The current run is a co-headlining tour with Circa Survive. “We’ve known them for a long time.

“We’re always looking to tour with bands that are good people and good musicians. You usually only get one or the other.”

Lorrie Lives the Songs SINGER-SONGWRITER Lorrie Morgan likes to say that her whole life is a country song. Her accumulated life experiences have enhanced her finely tuned ability to get inside of the songs she sings. “To reach people, you have to be true to the song,” she says. “You've got to be able to live it.” The four-times married Morgan says, “My life has proven that I have lived all those songs.”

In addition to writing her own songs, Morgan has developed a reputation as an effective interpreter of songs written by others. Her reggae-flavored reading of Bob Dylan's “Lay Lady Lay”—from her most recent album, 2016's Let Go… Slow—is a recent example. She says that when a songwriter presents their work, they like it done in a style fairly close to the original. “A little tweaking is acceptable,” she says, “but I try to do it the way they wrote it.”

Commercial considerations aren't what they once were, Morgan says. “Back then, we were real chartheavy,” she says. “It was very competitive for me.”

The focus in those days, she says, was “to get the best songs in Nashville, and get ’em out there quick. It was always a pressurized situation.”

These days she’s signed to a smaller, independent label.

“Now, my approach to recording is more relaxed,” she says. “I do songs that I feel I need to record for me and for my fans.” Morgan considers herself fortunate that her albums sell, largely without the benefit of radio exposure. “We're still selling out crowds and having a good time on the road,” she says.

Morgan faces an enviable challenge when working to put together a concert set list. With a dozen solo albums, plus several collaborative efforts, she has a wealth of material from which to draw. “I could go on and on and on and on,” she says with a laugh. “But we have to pick the songs that the people are coming out to hear.” On dates in intimate venues, she often takes requests from the audience.

Over the course of her now 45-plus years in the spotlight, Morgan says that she has aimed to follow the advice her father—Country Music Hall of Famer George Morgan—gave her years ago during one of her first studio sessions. “Don't ever say you can’t until you try.”

Mosaic of the South Bay comes to life at Sangam Arts events

ILAS NAYAK STANDS on an outdoor stage and paints a colorful image of the Hindu god Ganesha on a black canvas.

Palm trees tower above him, jutting up into the nighttime sky. The stage is one component of a sprawling multilevel backyard landscape at a private Saratoga residence—a yard that looks more like a resort on the Riviera Maya.

Nayak wears leather pants while he works the canvas, exaggerating movements and painting strokes to the rhythms of a Bollywood tune

blasting from the PA system. Nayak is here in town to paint for a large backyard crowd of 110 attending a fundraiser for Sangam Arts, a South Bay multicultural arts organization.

Flamenco artists take the stage after Nayak does his thing, and they provide a rousing performance. Timo Nunez and Fanny Ara sizzle on the dance floor together while Felix De Lola sings and David McLean plays acoustic guitar.

Between the Hindu painting and Spanish Flamenco, Sangam Arts President Usha Srinivasan takes the stage to explain Sangam’s philosophy.

Silicon Valley is not a melting pot, she says. Instead it’s a salad bowl with numerous arts demographics and waves of immigration all enhancing one another rather than wilting in their cultural silos.

Sangam aims to function as a

crossover mechanism, Srinivasan says, a machine of connectionism, staging various performances that navigate routes between the silos.

The food at the fundraiser, like the performance, is half Indian and half Spanish—exactly the type of unapologetically impure mix I prefer.

Surrounded by Saratoga millionaires, I scarf on mung bean salad, Spanish rice and Indian raita, while Bollywood and Flamenco continue to take turns on stage. The whole evening feels like a cross-stitch of various ethnicities embroidering themselves together, all without losing their original identities.

Art is life and life is embroidery.

This is not my first experience with Sangam Arts. Some of their previous productions weaved many disparate threads into the same evening of creativity. In September, Sangam threw a fantastic production, Whirl Quantum Dance, at the Mexican Heritage Plaza.

I could verge on Tolstoy-style verbosity in describing the show. But to keep things simple, Persian and Indian artists used contemporary Western

and Sufi dance along with ancient Indian martial arts and digital video to embroider the similarities between how Western physicists and Eastern mystics understand reality. Hindu cosmology, astrophysics, quantum mechanics, the observer effect, Heisenberg's uncertainty principle, Jungian alchemy and Buddhist veils of illusion all contributed to a sparkling and original production.

Director and choreographer Sahar Dehghan worked with a scientist at CERN in Geneva and experts in cosmology to create the whole shebang.

And just last week, the San Jose Museum of Art played host to the second installment of Mosaic Silicon Valley, a Sangam Arts initiative intended to activate the museum on specific Thursdays. This time the gig was called “Lost and Found: Forging a Future from Fragments,” and it featured two performances.

Giulio Cesare Perrone, artistic director of Berkeley’s Inferno Theatre, presented a dance performance called “Fragments from Quantum Love,” which moved throughout the galleries and played off the thematic material in the art exhibitions. Vietnamese spoken word artist Fong Tran then gave a poetic and emotional performance about the problems of trying to break free from Vietnamese stereotypes. So far, the Mosaic Silicon Valley events have successfully attracted people who had never visited the museum or even downtown San Jose. This is probably what happens when you live in Saratoga, of course.

And speaking of Saratoga, after plowing through a few plates, I couldn’t help but wander around the backyard.

The deep blue infinity pool overlooked a fire pit. A cabana-style clubhouse included a kitchen to prepare food for the 110 people attending the fundraiser, all of whom gathered at circular tables and portable gas heaters, the kind seen at restaurant patios. Over at the other side of the property, a multilevel trellised garden area tumbled down a hillside, accompanied by a few stairways. The entire setting was a mosaic of sorts, a Spanish-style colonial hacienda with South Asian statuary everywhere— perfect for the evening’s performances.

AN JOSE’S JAPANTOWN is home to some of the finest sushi, hot pot and noodle houses in the valley, as well as fabulous cultural events such as the Obon festival.

The last thing one might expect to find flourishing in the neighborhood is one of the best new Caribbean and soul food joints in the Bay Area.

“My cousin and I decided to open up Carisoul as a gift for my Aunty Wendy,” says owner Omar Boyd. “This has been her dream for quite some time.

Her love for cooking is clear to see once you taste any of her homemade meals.”

Despite being open less than three months, Carisoul has already assembled a devoted following with its amalgamated fusion of Caribbean, soul food and Southern barbecue. The menu is simple and features a small, curated selection of meats and sides that are easily shared. Boyd asked my cohort and me which items we wanted to try, and my reply was easy: “All of the them.”

Realizing I was serious, he proceeded to load up our plates with their jerk chicken, barbecue ribs and oxtails ($17.99/two meat plate and $14.99/one meat plate). Carisoul does have other meats (i.e., jerk pulled pork and beef tanga), but the selection varies on a daily basis. Each plate comes with two sides, so we opted for the Calypso Mac & Cheese, coconut rice, Trini green beans and garlic potatoes.

All of the sides were tasty, but the fluffy, sweet coconut rice and the macaroni and cheese especially stood out, the latter providing a bakedon crust that I adored.

As for the meats—where to begin?

From the spicy, tender jerk chicken to the smoky, fall-off-the-bone ribs, we couldn’t stop humming in delight. However, the real showstopper here is the enormous yet fork-tender oxtails, which were cooked in a heavenly beef gravy. It was a Caribbean Thanksgiving!

A caveat on the oxtails: there’s no avoiding getting a bit messy while eating them, but I make no apologies for grabbing and gnawing them cavemanstyle; it’s the best way to get every last delicious morsel off of the bones. I also recommend adding the gravy to the coconut rice; be prepared for nirvana.
