There’s nothing quite like a BBQ to enjoy the summer swelter, so I thought I’d invite some folks over to enjoy the day. Enter my good friend's husband, who, since having two kids back-to-back, has not seen the outside of his house except to go to work. Not a minute went by without one of his baby-free hands clasping a frothy beer or one of my famous oldfashioneds. “Pace yourself,” I told him. “It’s only 4.” But this guy putting out a grease fire in his throat. By the middle of the party he was rocking back and forth like a boat in a storm. I thought I needed Dramamine because the guy was making me seasick. Beer splattered with his every step, bits of food flew with every word he slurred, corn on the cob turned into corn on the coffee table. Plates were knocked over. Glasses toppled. Even on his way out, he accidentally crushed the antique shoe rack I bought at an estate sale. “I’m so sorry about my husband,” his longsuffering spouse offered on her way out, a baby on each hip. “I didn't think I'd have a third kid to babysit today.”

Clock Ticking Milpitas is expected to fire embattled City Manager TOM WILLIAMS, according to sources, and the decision will likely come down at the Aug. 15 City Council meeting. Williams, the veteran bureaucrat who has been on paid leave since May, has seen his record tarnished in recent years due to costly legal battles with subordinates and allegations that he misused taxpayer money. The council spent a portion of this week’s closed session evaluating Williams’ performance.

He managed to escape the ax, but that doesn’t necessarily equal job security.

A source close to the situation says the city manager is not expected to continue on the job beyond the Aug. 15 meeting.

Police Chief STEVE PANGELINAN, who has been serving as interim city manager in his absence, will likely continue in that role until the council selects a permanent replacement. Williams, whose attorney didn’t respond to a request for comment, stepped into the city manager role in 2006 They as an “at will” employee.

In a review of records, Fly learned that Williams charged another questionable legal expense two years earlier. The mayor declined Tuesday to comment on the situation. Since returning from Guam on deployment for the National Guard in May, Tran has recused himself from meetings about Williams’ pending litigation. “I don’t know what the rest of the council is discussing behind those doors,” he said, “but I do know that myself and the residents are waiting to find out.”

Long-shuttered downtown San Jose venue gets lifeline with ‘barcade’

NCE ONE OF the busiest and loudest street corners in San Jose, two neighboring properties at the intersection of Second and Santa Clara streets, for more than six years, have sat empty, dark and silent.

Previously home to nightlife venues Voodoo Lounge and Toons, the combined 12,000 square feet of space provided a crash course in sound throughout the aughts.

Voodoo hosted punk and rock shows as well as notable touring acts

in hip-hop and R&B, while the latter blended genres as a piano bar and Top 40 dance club.

Since 2011, however, when both businesses shuttered, the corner has been an entertainment abyss. That should change soon.

Renovations are underway to transform the old Toons lounge, a 5,528 square-foot property at 52 E. Santa Clara St., into a bar and arcade come spring 2018. Last month, business partners George Lahlouh, Dan Phan and Johnny Wang officially closed on a lease of the property with Lift Partners. The proprietors of the high-end yet unstuffy cocktail lounge Paper Plane on South First Street— Phan and Wang own the neighboring gourmet hot dog and craft beer shop, Original Gravity Public House— nabbed the venue to capitalize on an

industry trend they’ve seen in other major markets, such as Barcade in New York City, Ground Kontrol in Portland, Brewcade in San Francisco and Button Mash in Los Angeles.

“We are creating a cocktail-beer bar that will encompass the best of both worlds,” Lahlouh says. “The best that Paper Plane and Original Gravity have to offer.”

Gensler, the international architecture, design and planning firm, which has a San Jose office just down the street on West Santa Clara, will help oversee the design of the yet-to-be named “barcade,” which will have two bars, a separate kitchen, and arcade and pinball games in nearly every direction.

“It’ll all be coin operated, kind of like when you were a kid at Golfland,” Phan says.

Many of the machines were purchased at Captain’s Auction Warehouse, which is based in Anaheim.

The barcade’s ownership group is clearly stoked about the selection of titles they’re acquiring, which include pristine condition games such

Freise says that Lift Partners, which have a go-getter reputation for retail projects after coming out of Seattle and working with Amazon, knew the space needed to add something vibrant to the well-trafficked downtown corridor.

“We are looking for authentic retail,” he says. “You know it when you see it. …

7-Eleven came knocking on our door— we did not accept. It doesn’t add to the overall story of downtown.”

Freise, now a resident of the area, has an idea of what community members are craving.“We want to see these places activated,” he says.

Echeverria notes that people have told the city they want to see a mix business in the old Voodoo space, perhaps even a collection of restaurants that offers an open space and food options throughout the day.

The barcade team intends to bring on executive chef Winson Duong to craft a diverse food menu with lunch hours available for all ages. In the late afternoon, the venue will go to 21 and over.

“There’s no reason why Silicon Valley won’t embrace it,” Lahlouh says. “The timing is right, the folks that grew up with these games are in their late 20s and 30s.”

Every member of the team hails from San Jose, and that hometown connection seems to have also resonated with local crowds. The intersection of Second and Santa Clara streets can be a haven for the homeless and corner boys in the evenings, Phan and Lahlouh acknowledge, but the same could have been said about the block of South First Street they helped reinvigorate with Original Gravity and Paper Plane.

Bars such as 55 South and Nomikai also assisted in the SoFA District’s renaissance as one heads further down to the downtown arts district.

“Right now, if everything goes smooth—which rarely happens— we’re looking at February, March of next year,” Phan says.

Once that happens, a once-cracking venue will be reintroduced to the community through an equally familiar concept.

“We’re kind of reintroducing an old idea that’s been forgotten,” Lahlou says, “which is that arcades are social.”

The pinball selection, however, could be the crown jewel of the barcade’s offerings. They’ll feature titles such as Medieval Madness and Monster Bash, which can retail online for as much as $17,000.

“We like to think we have the six best pinball games ever made,” Phan says.

For now, the space previously home to Voodoo Lounge, located at 14 S. Second St., remains vacant. The music venue was a popular attraction in downtown San Jose’s nightlife scene for 11 years, before closing in February 2011. In its last month, Grammy Award-winning artist Miguel appeared at a surprise show, and a month before that rapper Talib Kweli performed.

Voodoo Lounge was pivotal in San Jose’s small live-music clique along with the Cactus Club and Blank Club, bringing live music downtown.

Performers may not have been big enough to fill SAP Center, but they gave locals an opportunity to witness up-and-comers and the occasional prime-time act. Both the Voodoo and upcoming barcade properties are under the ownership of San Franciscobased Lift Partners, which purchased the adjoining venues from Saratoga Capital in August 2016 as part of a $33.5 million package, according to the Silicon Valley Business Journal.

Many have wondered why the properties languished for so long, and it appears the new owners had a vision that didn’t entail waiting for a residential project to fill the space.

“Previously it was a challenging retail market, but there is a lot of good news in the last three years,” says Chris Freise says, manager and co-founder of Lift Partners.

Nate Echeverria, director of policy and operations for the San Jose Downtown Association, suggests the long wait might have had something do with the interior. “The spaces that tend to stay vacant longer are a raw shell,” he says. “Whoever goes in there will have to install a new [heating and air conditioning system] and come up to all the green building standards.”

For small businesses, that’s a costly upfront challenge.

The city has been working with small businesses to give them a head start in this process, through the San Jose Storefronts Initiative, which offsets some city permit fees and taxes. This initiative was funded with

The tower could be seen from San Francisco and was a source of great pride to San Jose, a municipality of just 12,567 residents and the first electrified city west of the Rockies. 12

“It is a great achievement for a town to light itself,” a gushing Vanity Fair wrote, calling it “a wonderful tower” that emitted “beautiful noonday, moon-like rays.”

San Jose has endured a long, difficult century since a brutal gust of wind deprived the community of its proudest civic icon. Without a tall skyline, distinctive mountain backdrop or water feature, and with no recognizable structure like St. Louis’ arch or Seattle’s Space Needle, San Jose has been a city without a marketable visual identity. It has been reduced to bragging about the number of days of sunshine or population rank, its disputed status as Silicon Valley’s capital or its proximity to sexier Northern California amenities.

Many people think the city’s located somewhere in Southern California.

Now, three men aim to try to change that. They want to create a brandable structure that draws on the region’s history and looks to the future. They want to rebuild the light tower.

As envisioned, it will be in Plaza de Cesar Chavez, two-and-a-half blocks south of the original location and . And this time it will be brighter, more colorful and properly structurally engineered. With computer controlled LED lighting effects and possibly an observation deck at the top, it would be a stunning symbol.

In 2017, the city is once again ascendant, with a strong economy, a building boom and a creative urban culture coming into its own. San Jose’s transportation infrastructure and reserves of developable land have drawn the attention of technology giants like Apple and Google, as well as many startups.

The technological innovation and economic activity we see today are reminiscent of the decades that followed the California’s Gold Rush and statehood, which paralleled a global explosion of innovation as electrification took hold during the Second Industrial Revolution of the late 19th century.

One of electric power’s first deployments was to light public spaces. Arc technology, which relied on glowing carbon rods like the ones that spark a welder’s gun, proved a more economical way to illuminate

streets than gas lamps. A year before the tower’s celebrated debut in 1881, however, Thomas Edison established the first incandescent lamp factory in Menlo Park, New Jersey. Inexpensive filament bulbs could be pole-mounted alongside roads and walkways, pretty much ending central lighting initiatives.

Nonetheless, the light tower stood proudly at the intersection of Market and Santa Clara streets for 34 years, surviving the 1906 earthquake that reduced many commercial buildings to rubble. It would have remained longer had not harsh weather and rusting supports conspired to take it down. Decorated at holiday times and featured on postcards, the light tower was a tall, swinging stick on electrical engineering’s frontier, the region’s tallest structure and, some believe, the tallest free-standing iron structure in the world at the time it was built.

San Jose, the valley’s commercial and intellectual hub, was Silicon Valley’s forerunner, home to three higher education institutions back when Stanford was stables and trotting tracks.

The early 1880s, in particular, were years of tremendous breakthroughs in harnessing electricity’s potential.

In 1880, Alexander Graham Bell made the first wireless telephone call—solar powered, no less— using a beam of light. In 1881, Werner von Siemens rolled out the first electric streetcar and the International Electrotechnical Commission established the volt measurement. The same year, Nicolai Tesla signed on as chief electrician at the Budapest Telephone Exchange, which led to the development of alternating current. George Westinghouse began commercializing Tesla’s patents in 1888 to establish the AC system that’s still in use today.

In San Jose, civic booster and newspaper publisher J.J. Owens began editorializing about the need to erect a light structure in May 1881, and he managed to squeeze the city’s commercial leaders for $5, $10 and $20 donations, as well as a big check from the newly established California Electric Light Co., to fund the 237-foot structure, roughly the same height as the blue 23-story

that’s fully accessible to youngsters with physical limitations, opened in 2015. Part of the Guadalupe River Park, the Playgarden features custom-designed play equipment and art pieces. The initiative was seeded with private donations from members of the Rotary Club of San Jose and augmented with support from foundations, public agencies and corporations. It’s a one-of-akind public amenity that’s in a class by itself.

The Rotary Playgarden, Ball says, “is as rewarding a project personally as anything I've ever done, and I’ve done much larger and more sophisticated projects. None really gave me more satisfaction.”

Ball says he came up with the idea of rebuilding the light tower as he was leaving Hensel Phelps and completing the Rotary project.

“Nobody approached me. It was an internal thought that I had. Looking at the smaller-scale version [of the light tower] at History Park, hearing my wife comment over the years that San Jose has no real definable architectural structures or features that would tell me this is San Jose,” he says, adding that the city has “somewhat of a nondescript skyline.”

“Then our Rotary Club donated money to pay for that little 30-foot light tower that was in Christmas in the Park last year.

And I thought, ‘why don't we just rebuild some version of the old light tower and create a source of pride for gatherings and light it up like a tremendous light show. It's part of the vision, with LED lights that turn teal when the Sharks do something cool and win. Red, white and blue on the Fourth of July. The possibilities are endless.”

Solar panels and wind turbines could be placed on the tower, Ball adds, and lasers could be aimed at it from other parts of the park.

Ball met Wohlmut through the Rotary Club of San Jose. (This writer is also one of the club’s 464 members.) The builder and the historian recruited another Rotarian, well connected restaurateur Steve Borkenhagen, who’s been part of downtown’s many fits and starts over the past 40 years as the operator of Eulipia restaurant, Cafe Stritch and the San Pedro Square Market during

its startup. The three established the San Jose Light Tower Corporation in March as a 501c3 charitable entity.

On Tuesday, Aug. 8, the corporation will hold its first fundraiser at Cafe Stritch to raise money for Wohlmut’s film, “The Light Between Two Towers,’’ which documents the connections between the San Jose and Paris structures. Borkenhagen calls the tower rebuilding a “legacy initiative” that will be a gift to future generations.

Wohlmut hopes the project will break new ground, and possibly include robotic movement. “Imagine a tower that changed shape every 10 minutes. That’s why it’s important to open this up to a worldwide competition, which we know we want to do,” he says.

Ball adds that the new tower would be capped at “250 to 260” feet, about the height of the Fairmont Hotel and the Adobe headquarters, unless San Jose can convince airport regulators to raise the height limits for structures in the flight path, an effort currently underway.

“We’d love to have an observation platform” and possibly a restaurant at the top, Ball says, though he admits it would “triple or quadruple the cost of the project” to add an elevator and staircase.

He won’t quote any figures until a design is developed, but he acknowledges it will likely be in the low tens of millions. Money could be recouped through admission fees to the observation deck.

Ball says the team has met with city officials and business association leaders who are cautiously enthusiastic. “We’re still in the mode that we’re trying to get everyone as excited about this as we are,” he admits.

Nonetheless, as someone who oversaw the construction, renovation and demolition of terminals at San Jose International Airport, a $675 million project that included a consolidated car rental facility, flyover bridges and a parking deck clad with the “Hands” public art project, Ball is confident that a tower will rise. He projects 2020 as its target completion date.

“We can get this thing done,” he says.

DRAWN OUT A viral video shows a Campbell police officer drew his gun on a man for 10 minutes, and some commenters believe he obscured his body camera.

Campbell PD Defends Cop Who Drew Gun on Motorist

BY JENNIFER WADSWORTH Video of a Campbell cop holding a driver and passenger at gunpoint for nearly 10 minutes last week has gone viral, generating nearly a million views and more than 10,000 comments on Facebook.

The clip, recorded by the female driver, shows the officer aiming his weapon at a male passenger, who keeps his hands in view of the camera.

But the footage doesn’t show what preceded the traffic stop on Highway 101 or how it ended, Campbell Police Department spokesman Capt. Gary Berg told San Jose Inside.

“There is more to the story,” he said.

In a statement posted online Monday, Berg detailed the agency’s version of events based on a review of the officer’s body camera.

On July 28, a Campbell motorcycle cop driving north through Hollister reportedly saw a car zip by in the far-right lane at 85 mph. The officer stopped the vehicle “out of safety concerns,” Berg said.

In the five minutes before the start of the Facebook video, Berg said, there was “a cordial conversation” between the cop and the two people in the car. According to the statement, the officer explained why he stopped them and asked to see some documentation.

Both the driver and passenger spent several minutes rifling through the car for the requested paperwork, Berg wrote in his narrative. The officer then told them to wait in the vehicle as he wrote up a citation. That’s when the passenger allegedly reached under his seat.

“Unfortunately, the passenger’s unexpected movement towards the bottom of the seat caused the officer to perceive a threat and draw his handgun,” Berg stated.

The video picks it up from there.

Ultimately, the driver was cited for speeding and the passenger for wearing his seatbelt improperly.

The video drew mixed reactions,

prompting comparisons to other traffic stops caught on camera that— unlike this one—ended with police killing unarmed civilians. Berg told San Jose Inside that this is the first time Campbell’s police department has had to deal with a viral video involving one of its officers.

Top brass is considering whether to release the body camera footage, which Berg said captured the entire incident—despite the officer’s gun and hands appearing to obscure the camera. But Campbell police won’t release the name or other identifying information about the officer, other than that he’s a veteran on the force, because the video prompted death threats. Nothing in the body camera footage or Facebook video indicates that the officer violated policy, Berg said.

The encounter is, however, being investigated. The driver and passenger have yet to respond to requests for comment.

San Jose is taking heat over its crackdown on illegal fireworks. According to a handful of Blossom Hill residents, the city slapped them with $500 citations with no proof that they did anything wrong. The fines stem from the city’s online reporting system, which allows anyone to complain and apparently requires little in the way of evidence. By mid-July, the system, run by the San Jose Fire Department, had generated 1,076 complaints that resulted in 161 warning letters and 45 citations. City officials declined to state how many were based on hearsay, but residents who want to contest their citation will have to pay up before they can appeal. “There is a due process issue here,” City attorney Rick Doyle admitted. The City Council will revisit its fireworks enforcement policy when it meets next week.

Water District Sticks with CEO The Santa Clara Valley Water District’s national search for a new chief netted an empty catch, so the agency in charge of South Bay flood control and drinking water stuck with a familiar face.

Norma Camacho, the interim CEO since March 2016, will assume the role on a permanent basis after a split vote last week by the district’s board of directors. The decision, still to be finalized, was made after the board conducted two rounds of interviews with final candidates.

In a statement, John Varela, board chair, lauded Camacho’s “ability to lead this complex organization through major challenges in reducing flood risks, providing a reliable water supply and protecting our watersheds.”

The news release made no mention of the February flood in San Jose that caused more than $100 million in property damage, displaced hundreds of residents and might have been preventable had the district looked at installing low-tech pumps at Anderson Dam. —Josh Koehn

The longest-running touring music festival in North America, the Vans Warped Tour, is returning to Shoreline with its annual dose of punk, metal, hardcore, screamo and a sprinkling of electronic and hip-hop. American Authors, a four piece New York band best known for their hit singles "Believer" and "Best Day of My Life" will be there, along with post-hardcore band Silverstein and Christian metal band blessthefall. But that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Stage Fight BACK FOR ‘CHRISTMAS’ After many setbacks, the flood-damaged Northside Theatre says it will be back for its annual staging of ‘A Christmas Carol.’

f you think you’ve had a bad year, San Jose’s Northside Theatre Company has you beat.

When the Anderson Reservoir spilled over this past winter, many San Jose neighborhoods found themselves at the mercy of the elements.

After two weeks of heavy rain in late February, waters in Coyote Creek reached a critical level, and entire San Jose neighborhoods were flooded. All told, more than 14,000 residents were forced to evacuate their homes in a disaster that cost nearly $100 million in damage.

One of the victims was the Olinder Community Center, home to the Northside Theatre Company since

1980. Like most theater companies, Northside started its year planning a season’s worth of performances, capped by its annual holiday production of “A Christmas Carol”— something it has put on annually since opening.

But with flood damage to the community center, Northside Theatre Company had to move some shows, and cancel the rest of its season. Its only hope was to get back into business in time for “A Christmas Carol.”

San Jose’s Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services was in charge of cleanup and recovery. On April 17, Northside was told the theater could reopen on June 30, which would have even given it time for a fall season opener.

“The first estimation was several weeks. But as [Parks and Rec] looked into it further, it looked like it was going to take longer and longer periods

of time”, says the theater’s artistic director, Meredith King. Although the theater passed an abatement test in late May, the damage from the flood was greater than previously expected— calling into question the date set by Parks & Rec in April.

Another obstacle was the involvement of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), which has criteria for local governments to comply with in order to recoup monetary losses in event of disaster and subsequent cleanup.

“The first I heard that FEMA was involved was at a meeting that happened on June 13,” says King about the next delay. King was informed that the original date was a mistake, and realistically it would take 18-24 weeks for full repairs, meaning Northside wouldn’t be back in time to stage its longest-running show.

“We were told June 30. We made plans based on those dates, and then that turned out not to be true”, King says, chuckling ruefully. “It was, as you can imagine, startling to find that out.”

Two weeks later, when all hope seemed to be lost, the city changed its

tune again, telling King that, in fact, the theatre company would be able to open on Sept. 30. That would leave enough time to put on “A Christmas Carol.”

In order to make sure that deadline was met, the city’s Public Works Department joined Parks and Rec in the effort. It should also be noted during that period, fans of the company took to social media to voice their complaints.

Either way, this was the most confident King felt during the whole process. So, for now, “A Christmas Carol”—and thus, Northside’s key source of revenue—is back on the calendar.

As a private business, the Northside Theatre Company has been entangled in red tape.

Coordinating between private, local and federal agencies can be a topsy-turvy mess, especially during recovery from the largest flood for San Jose in more than a century.

Moreover, the process for responding to a disaster of this magnitude requires complex maneuvers from the city that often take time.

“To rebuild the Northside Theatre, we have to make sure we follow the proper process in order to be reimbursed by the federal government,” says Matt Cano, assistant director of parks, neighborhood and recreational services. The flood marked the first time the city has worked with FEMA on a such a massive scale. And It wasn’t until last weekend that the city got final advice on how to move forward.

“The Northside Theatre has been at the top of our list for some time,” Cano continues, adding, “There is just a lot of work to recover from the flood. Dealing with a lot of projects, as well as FEMA, takes time, and it’s complicated.”

Call it a bit of good timing, but it looks like the latest announcement will be final. The Northside Theatre Company will re-open Sept. 30.

“I’m cautiously optimistic,” says King about the newest and firmest date. “I think it’s going to work out.

I really won’t be relaxed until I walk into the building again. But at least I know the city is working on it.”

The Beasts Within TEN YOUNG MEN—angry, lost and scared—shed their polished upbringing and descend into tribalist violence in the Pear Theatre’s production of Lord of the Flies. Based on the novel by Nobel Prizewinning author William Golding and adapted for the stage by Nigel Williams, the play faithfully translates the tale about the tenuous line separating civilization from chaos.

Featuring a cast of aspiring young actors from a variety of Bay Area junior high and high schools, the play is presented by the Palo Alto-based youth theater company, A Theatre Near U, in Lord of the Flies cooperation with the Pear in Mountain View.

Just as in the novel, the play follows the plight of a small group of schoolboys marooned on an unpopulated island somewhere in the Pacific. Though the group attempts to work together at first, factions soon form and the children fight among themselves as they struggle to survive and find rescue.

An allegorical tale first published in the U.K. in 1954, Lord of the Flies was Golding’s response to the rise of Hitler, and feels particularly relevant in today’s fractious political climate. “It is easier than we think to fall into meanness,” says Tanna Herr, co-founder of A Theatre Near U. As the group cleaves in two, opposing leaders emerge. Ralph—played by Jackson Wylder, an incoming Columbia University freshman from Palo Alto—is the first to take charge and attempts to organize the boys around a few focused objectives: surviving, keeping a signal fire lit and having fun.

Jack, the play’s antagonist, is played by Saratoga native Raymónd McCarthy, a rising freshman at the Stella Adler Studio of Acting.

The set is minimal yet efficient. Platforms constructed from wood beams stand in for the island’s craggy peak, while the gray-chalked floorboards and ever-changing backdrop set the tones for a beach atmosphere. This was aided by the cast’s ability to believably gaze into the ocean or crawl through mountainous vegetation.

The boys carried the show without missing a beat. The dialogue exchange flowed naturally even though there were often 10 boys on stage at once. —Payje Redmond & Nick Veronin

OTH COMMEMORATIVE and zeitgeist-filled, Detroit is the angriest movie Kathryn Bigelow has ever made. Although she deserves the praise she got for The Hurt Locker, in Detroit, she reverses Zero Dark Thirty’s coziness with “enhanced interrogation.”

An animated sequence describes the black diaspora to the north that made Detroit what it was by 1967—a company town with strictly delineated African-American ghettos, patrolled by a 90 percent white police force.

By the opening, before the rebellion begins, we’re completely on the side

of the rebels. The cops raid an illegal after-hours club, but they can’t get in through the chained-up back door, and have to roust the suspects out on the street. There are a lot more celebrants inside than they expected, and the cops lose control. The tempo increases, in incidents caught by camerawork meant to recall Arriflex camera work: we see a face in the crowd, smoking a cigarette and sizing the cops up fearlessly, a joker yelling at a friend he sees being hauled out in handcuffs: “Hey, you alcoholic…” And then the Molotov cocktails start to fly.

After this carnival, we meet a main character, Melvin Dismukes (John Boyega) who is about to start his 17th hour of work, moonlighting as a security guard. Boyega is big, intensely restrained, and looks like a peacemaker—we can follow his

presence through the chaos to come.

Bigelow’s trick on us is that no matter what Dismukes looks like, he’s unable to stop the trouble he witnesses.

Meanwhile Larry (Algee Smith) and Fred (Jacob Lattimore) of the real-life band The Dramatics meet backstage for a big show at the Fox Theater— The Supremes (or a lookalike group) are opening for them, or would be if the show weren’t canceled.

Avoiding the patrols, Larry and Fred duck into a nearby hot-sheet motel. The sight of the neon Algiers Motel sign makes the long-memoried viewer’s stomach turn over. The Algiers Motel incident—the New Yorker’s John Hersey did a book on it—is still officially unsolved.

As presented here, what happens is like a long home invasion. Will Poulter plays Krauss, the inept patrolman in charge, a fictional composite. Poulter has the serpentine eyebrows of Jack Nicholson—he could play the young Michael Keaton, too—and he brings a surprise to every scene. Playing a dedicated ethnic-hater, actors usually go big.

The fear on this callow fool’s face is barely concealed.

Detroit gets caught up in its ordeal of beating, mock executions and ultimate murder—at half the length, it would have had twice the power.

Bigelow proceeds the overnight ordeal with an unusually fun sequence.

Two visiting Ohio girls (Hannah Murray and Kaitlyn Deaver) tease the musicians over to the motel’s annex. Here, as in the beginning, we see the headiness of life during a civil insurrection, seen from what seems like a safe place, a swimming pool with beerdrinkers enjoying themselves. Then, at an after party, some more drinking, some yakking about John Coltrane.

The fun ends when Carl (Jason Mitchell), who gets tired of the strangers in his room, plays a stupid practical joke. He’s trying to make a point about how white people don’t understand the ambient fear black people live in: “I’m just acting,” he smirks at the end. Yes, and you’ve been caught acting by the audience, even before you admitted it.

Liberal wishy-washiness is evident in this otherwise startlingly intense film. Bigelow insists there were good apples on the DPD. One rescues a bloodied escapee from the Algiers Motel. And there is a police detective, Tanchuck (Darren Goldstein), who has the spine to call Krauss “a racist fuck.” How likely is that, given the time and the place?

Bigelow is no political sophisticate.

Her emphasis on conflict over everything is what made Aliens the most gung-ho movie about the Marines since Raoul Walsh died. But this is one of her best films, and an ornament to this year’s cinema, as exciting a year as we’ve had in ages.

Detroit matches in intent Get Out, the Ferguson, Missouri, documentary Whose Streets? and Justin Chon’s drama Gook about the 1992 L.A. riots.

She balances her startling force with sensitivity and sensuality. It’s said you can never make an anti-war movie, that some of the thrill of battle will leak into even the most pacifistic film.

Give Bigelow credit—this certainly isn’t an anti-rebellion movie.

(1982) 35th anniversary screening of Amy Heckerling’s comedy, still the best and the brightest of the '80s teen movies, though it spawned a still-toxic layer of brat-pack movies. Based on Cameron Crowe's undercover report for Rolling Stone, it follows the social and sexual anxieties of a crowd at a suburban Los Angeles high school. Denizens include: then-USC Trojans football player Forest Whitaker (debuting), Jennifer Jason Leigh, and a neverbetter Sean Penn as the surfer Jeff Spicolli, brandishing the most perfect Southern California drawl in cinema.

Ray Walston is the teacher driven to exasperation by his pranks. Phoebe Cates is memorably sweet in a diving board-set fantasy scene, set to a tune by The Cars. The part where the seductive power of Led Zeppelin is explained is as pungent now as it was then. (Plays Aug 2 in various valley theaters. FathomEvents.com (RvB)

THREE ON A MATCH/ FIVE STAR FINAL

(1932/1931) Three girls who were fellow students at P.S. 62 go their separate ways: Mary (Joan Blondell) ends up in reform school; Bette Davis becomes a secretary, and Vivian (Ann Dvorak), the ritziest of the three, marries well but sickens of the rich life. She ditches her silkhatted husband (Warren William, not usually this boring) in favor of strong drink and weak men.

It's Dvorak's picture. Her throaty voice, her awkward but forceful acting has something juicy that smoother actors lack. Humphrey Bogart has a small part as the kind of stolid, staring gunman he'd later be mocking, right before punching them out. Did Bogart learn the toast "Here's looking at you" from this movie? BILLED WITH Five Star Final.

(1984) The hard to find videotaped version of the late Sam Shepard’s menacing comedy, sliced into tenths and semi-legal—if that.

This is a play that defends itself against the most unready actors, but here’s the definitive cast: Gary Sinise (who directed it on stage) and John Malkovich, proving himself the most interesting actor since Brando in this early key

role. Austin (Sinise) is a nervous, dweeby aspiring scriptwriter; his wayward brother Lee (Malkovich) is a burglar and a hustler, teasing and outwitting Austin, forcing his way into partnership on the script Austin is trying to write.

Sinise has since become a mighty character actor. Here, he’s the straight man to the mesmerizing Malkovich, with his flirty, finicky diction. The cracked, folksy voice is like a maximum security prison version of Gabby Hayes: “What kind of people kill each other the most? Family people.” Perhaps it has its resonance because it’s about the division between the way working class artists are raised and the way they end up. Shepard expressed that strife perfectly in creating these two brothers who are basically one person: the snakecollecting criminal kid fiendishly taunting the phony, smug Ivy League high-and-mighty writer.

YANKEE DOODLE DANDY/A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM

(1942/1935) So much better than it sounds from the title. Let its star sum the film up: “one song and dance man saluting another.”

It’s about show-business in the old style. In dull rural retirement, patriotic songsmith George M. Cohan (James Cagney) is lured out to rouse the nation he once stirred up with his tunes. In flashback we see his climb to the top, and the era in which he had almost a dozen shows playing on Broadway at the same time. Cagney, who described YDD as his favorite picture, thought that the staging of title tune was under-rehearsed. One could just as easily call it fresh and unpolished, seeing the stiff-legged Irish dance and the almost-recited lyrics to make sure the vaudeville crowd doesn’t miss a word. Maybe it’s a simple-minded song, but it’s like hearing it for the first time. BILLED WITH A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Warner Bros.’ dash for class meant hiring Max Reinhardt, whose stage spectacles made him one of the biggest names in the German theater. The production is quaint, hit and miss, but there are always worthy moments: the studio’s best clowns (Hugh Herbert and Joe E. Ross) as the theatrical bumpkins; the ever-peppy Dick Powell as Lysander, and the prettiest Hermia you’d ever see, a not-yet 20-year-old Olivia de Havilland. James Cagney is a brash, endearing Bottom, whose brio compliments everyone’s favorite Shakespeare play. (Plays Aug 5-7 in Palo Alto.) (RvB)

BOND GIRL Charlize Theron plays a super spy in ‘Atomic Blonde.’ Viewers v will have to decide if the film deserves its Bond comparisons.

‘Blonde’ Ambition WATCH EVERYONE CELEBRATE Atomic Blonde’s Lorraine Broughton (star and co-producer Charlize Theron) as the new Bond, and despair at how little attention people really pay to the Bond films. It’s not just all about assassinations and the beatdowns, yes? This vicious, contorted spy film is without the smoother qualities of a Bond flick, movies made for an audience that accepts the old movie euphemisms for sex and violence.

Stuntman turned director David Leith (John Wick) begins on a realistic note.

Lorraine is one big hematoma, soaking in a tub full of ice cubes like a football player.

It’s as much of a display of Theron’s bruised nude body, as the establishment of a motif of crystal, ice and clear booze coursing into rock glasses, over the kind of fist-sized ice cubes generally not seen in Europe, 1989. Smokers are shot to look like steam is coming out of their mouths. Except for a few fire-engine red scenes signifying a greater passion than Theron cares to match, everything looks like it was filmed in a walk-in refrigerator and scored with endless needle drops of ‘80s pop.

The frame is a debriefing at MI-6, where Lorraine’s narration starts to get unreliable, Usual Suspects style. Her auditors

are CIA beardo John Goodman and Toby Jones—the face of British unwellness—as her immediate superior. She’s survived a mess in East Berlin, where she went to investigate the assassination of a colleague.

Her contact is an out-of-bounds station head (James McAvoy in an ugly tank top, saying things like, “Berlin is Atomic Blonde a cruel mistress.”). At the bottom of it all is R; 115 Mins. a roster of agents that Valleywide both Western Europeans and the commies would, and do, kill to get. The love interest is Sofia Boutella as a lamblike French spy; she and Lorraine mix it up in a highly speculative way of how two ladies would get it on.

The much-noted staircase fight, seemingly shot in one long take, is a genuine technical feat. Eddie Marsan gives the film some humanity as a Stasi defector.

And there’s yet another fight scene at a renowned brutalist movie theater in East Berlin, the Kino International—it’s playing everyone’s favorite avant-garde jawbreaker, Tarkovsky’s Stalker. The theater is one of the few European locations we’re actually permitted to look at. —Richard von Busack

SF-based Le VICE detail ambitious new visual EP, ‘Boys and Girls’

ISUAL ALBUMS CAN be unforgiving. They generally take an exponential amount of time and effort to create compared with their audioonly counterparts. And with the exception of Prince’s Purple Rain and Beyonce’s Lemonade, few such efforts have succeeded in pulling in viewers beyond an artist’s core fanbase.

Even Endless, Frank Ocean’s masterful visual album that materialized from a series of

mysterious streams last summer, had fans downloading illegal rips of the album to separate it from the video component.

San Francisco hip-hop and pop outfit Le VICE aren’t concerned with all that.

According to producer and bassist Sean Stillinger, their upcoming five-track project Boys and Girls began taking shape as a visual album early on.

“There was a little songwriting stint we had where we wrote about 25 songs and there were these five that we thought were strongest and worked best together,” Stillinger says over the phone.

Currently in the mixing and colorcorrection stage, the album is almost done. Boys and Girls should be out by the end of 2017, according to Le VICE. The project itself is made up of live

performance footage in combination with an original narrative.

Founding member and front woman Alex Lee says it’s been a long time coming. “We’ve been working on the visual aspect for almost a year,” she says. “It’s partially a real-live performance we filmed, and then we made a story around that moment.”

All of the video production for Boys and Girls is being handled by Berkeley-based The Clock Factory.

The visuals aren’t the only thing that set this EP apart from the group’s last album, 2013’s The Payoff.

Stillinger says this time he and Lee put together every part of the music in tandem. ”The process is always evolving, but with The Payoff it was me doing the production with the band and Alex writing the melodies and lyrics,” Stillinger says. “But for the stuff we have now, me and Alex wrote the songs together on the guitar first.

Words, melody and everything were created together.”

This synergistic creative process is apparent when watching the trailer for Boys and Girls’ title track; all the pieces blend and work together seamlessly.

A synthesized organ melody sets the stage before Lee’s vocals come in.

The melodic thread of synths starts to fray and fan out before snapping back into their original form with Lee in the middle of it all.

Although she’s singing here, Lee’s vocals usually split the difference between rapping and singing, and she’s pretty good at both.

“Find You,” the second track from their last album, has Lee rapping over a backdrop of tightly picked guitar riffs, then shifting into double time before slowing everything down to sing the chorus. The bridge comes in about halfway through and sees Lee easing into a spoken-word delivery before the song ramps up to its climax.

Asked about what influenced them most when writing this new album, Lee answered Yeezus by Kanye West and Stillinger came back with Rumours from Fleetwood Mac. It makes sense that the two answers would be so disparate considering all of the genrebending going on in Le VICE’s music.

Though they are now based in San Francisco, the two founding members actually got their start back in Monterey when Stillinger was playing with bands in the area and Lee was putting out her first solo project.

Lee says Le VICE have always been influenced by the Bay Area’s diverse music scene. Their first EP, Neverland, even had a feature from the hyphy movement’s own Mistah F.A.B. “This is our home,” Lee says of the Bay Area. “I live in S.F. and Sean lives in Oakland. And even back then this was always the closest metropolitan area, this is where we got a lot of our inspiration.”

San Jose fans will likely get the chance to hear the upcoming project in full when the group comes to Art Boutiki this Saturday. The bill will be rounded out by veteran South Bay alt rockers Picture Atlantic and Oakland singer-songwriter Emily Brown.

I’ll do vodka; you do water. Last one to lose an eye wins!”

Cafe Stritch’s annual Rahsaanathon vibrates with positivity in fifth year

VERY YEAR THAT Cafe Stritch pays tribute to its patron saint, Rahsaan Roland Kirk (1935-1977), bright moments appear on multiple levels. Spacetime continuum-shattering vibes have already surfaced in this, the fifth year of Rahsaanathon, via the presence of Todd Barkan, proprietor of the legendary jazz club Keystone Korner in San Francisco.

Barkan toured with Kirk multiple times and showed up a month ago at Stritch, ratcheting up the anticipation for this year's festivities.

Kirk's influence is multidimensional.

He lost his sight at an early age, but he still played three saxophones at once, including a straight alto that gave Cafe Stritch its name. His music and positive, uplifting attitude left a long-term impact on thousands of musicians and fans. Each August at Stritch, Kirk’s old bandmate and friend Steve Turre shows up with a ferocious entourage of master musicians for a three-day set of Rahsaan’s best tunes.

On Sunday, Stritch will screen Adam Kahan’s documentary on Rahsaan, The Case of the Three Sided Dream.

So, as much as I can disseminate the history in linear language, allow me to spiral back to Keystone Korner, San Francisco’s North Beach jazz refuge of iniquity that Barkan orchestrated from 1972 to 1983. It was the kind of place where diamonds emerged from the roughness of life.

“It was the real deal as far as an

urban, gritty, smoke-filled, sweaty, hot jazz club,” said Steve Borkenhagen, who first opened his own jazz cafe, Eulipia, in 1977. The name came from one of Kirk’s most famous tunes.

Decades later, in 2013, Borkenhagen’s sons, Mike and Maxwell, would spawn Cafe Stritch in the same building. But the current venue is more musically, spiritually and theatrically inspired by Kirk’s legacy and life, deepening the connections. Borkenhagen the elder said that in 1977 he wasn't trying to copy or emulate Keystone Korner per se, but bright moments were definitely in the air.

“The grittiness and the small aspect of Keystone probably did have an effect on us in the sense of realizing that you didn't have to be a giant jazz club or in New York to have great players,” Borkenhagen said.

At Keystone Korner, Kirk was inseparable from the spirit of the place, performing and recording a now legendary live album, Bright Moments. The title track referred to those special convergences of pure bliss, when your favorite meal comes

to the table, or your main squeeze rolls in and it’s just the two of you, or any other scenario in which light dispels darkness.

Barkan even wrote the lyrics for the title track, “Bright Moments,” and the concept continues to play a role in his life—it’s in his outgoing voice message and on his business card.

Kirk’s outlook, to this day, remains a massive inspiration.

“Even though he could be very, very realistic in his portrayals of the struggles of everyday life, Rahsaan had an incredibly positive and positivist viewpoint and practice through his whole life,” Barkan said.

“His music was his torch and his fire and his light in the tunnel of life. He carried that light with him to the end of his days. ... Himself, and his pride, and his dignity of being all reflects itself in the song ‘Bright Moments.’”

Such are the vibes during the first weekend of August, when Kirk’s musical spirit is channeled at Cafe Stritch. This year it started early. A month ago, Barkan hit the Bay Area to celebrate the 45th anniversary of when he began operating Keystone Korner. In yet another instance of previous dimensions of time spiraling back to the forefront, Barkan jumped in with the band at Cafe Stritch and sang the lyrics for "Bright Moments." There he was, with Kathy Sloane’s photo of KIrk on the brick wall behind him, in a club directly inspired by the spirit of his old friend Rahsaan Roland Kirk.

Barkan said the experience at Stritch was wonderfully eerie, an uncanny but positive throwback. “I felt the spirituality and the energy of late '60s, early '70s San Francisco Keystone Korner—ionizers on the ceiling taking the pot smoke out of the air kind of vibration. ... It had that type of wonderfully constructive air.

“Being able to sing the lyrics of ‘Bright Moments’ in that club dedicated to Rahsaan was one of the joys of my life. I’ll never forget it and I’ll always treasure it for the rest of my days.”

UMPLINGS TAKE MANY forms in the culinary world.

From the Italian ravioli and Eastern European knish to the Middle Eastern samosa; just about every culture on earth has a variant. Even an ancient Roman cookbook includes a dumpling recipe. While no one culture can claim its invention, food historians believe the earliest dumplings date to early Chinese culture 1,800 years ago, during the Han dynasty.

This brings us to Dumpling Depot, one of the newest entrants to enter the dim sum dimension. The Sunnyvale eatery promises to deliver authentic Chinese dumplings, with more than 20 different house-made dumplings that range from pork, chicken, lamb and seafood to a nice selection of vegetarian options. The Depot also has the standard soups, noodle dishes and stir-fries one would expect at a Chinese restaurant.

We ordered a selection of dumplings based on our waiter’s recommendation, including their Shanghai Soup Dumplings (aka XLBs, $5.95 for 6), Pork Dumplings with Chives ($8.95/12) and Pot Stickers ($6.95/6). I also couldn’t resist ordering my two “go-to” Chinese dishes: Green Onion Pancakes ($5.95) and the Mongolian Beef ($9.95).

My dining partner, who had never had an XLB, made the rookie mistake of grabbing one and plopping it in his mouth. This is unwise, unless firstdegree tongue burns are your thing. The trick is to place the XLB on a soup spoon, bite a small hole, slurp the soup and then gobble it up. With that said, Dumpling Depot’s XLBs are on the small side, so I can easily understand the urge to down one. While all the dumplings were good, the clear winner was the Pork Dumplings with Chives. They were seasoned so well that it allowed a blend of pork, chive and gooey soft dumpling wrapper to melt in my mouth. I also couldn't resist dipping them into a combo of their soy sauce and black vinegar. A nuclear orange hot sauce is also available and delightful—but it is not for the faint of heart.

My test dishes were also terrific. The Mongolian beef was tender and the green onion pancakes had a nice touch of oil to them, crisp on the outside and tender in the middle.

ITTING ON A sleek wood finish, a specialty coffee in hand, I perused the nature-inspired artwork on the wall and remembered what it’s like to truly appreciate a morning cup of joe, when taste is king to our neurotic consumption to satisfy a caffeine fix.

Chromatic Coffee, located downtown San Jose on Second Street near Santa Clara Street, creates a tranquil ambiance that reinforces the company's philosophy: “Craftsmanship over ease and quality over convenience.”

The team of baristas and coffee entrepreneurs utilized their years of experience in cafes, roasteries and international trade to create their brand in 2012. Two months ago, they opened their second location in downtown.

While aiming to stay true to Silicon Valley’s agricultural roots as the “Valley of Heart’s Delight,” Chromatic offers an innovative twist of chemistry and water science. Chromatic makes sure to hit each of the four keys to great coffee: acidity, aroma, body and flavor.

I opted for a cup of The Holy Mountain ($2.99) seasonal blend, which features beans from Ethiopia, Colombia and El Salvador. The drink was tangy, with a clean aroma, and it left a crisp aftertaste. Chromatic partners maintain a direct relationship with their coffee farmers, in addition to partnering with fair-trade organizations.

“Our main demographic is all those that appreciate craft and specialty coffee, and that can be anyone,” says Aaron Coleman, Chromatic barista and art curator. Chromatic’s coffee requires an investment of love and care, she adds.

The pastries receive the same care and attention as the coffee. The gluten-free polenta cake ($4.99) offered a cross between cornbread and lemon cake filled with blackberry-lavender jam and topped with roasted almonds. The breaded treat was sweet and fruity. I also grabbed a healthconscious option, the vegan coconut almond chia pudding ($5.99). The taste, texture and aroma live up to the enticing name.

For coffee enthusiasts, prices will vary depending on the delivery system, such as devices like the Chemex and Immersion Drippers. Chromatic has clearly developed a fanbase—their multiple social media channels boast strong followings despite operating only in Santa Clara up until May—which would explain why the shop’s walls are also lined with wooden shelves offering a suite of Chromatic swag and gear needed to brew at home.
