Inside a coffeeshop in a well-heeled part of the South Bay, you were taking several napkins to wipe your face and clean your designer glasses where the rest of us would like to get creamer, milk, and sugar/ sweetener—gross! You didn’t purchase anything, but it would probably be alright if you patronized this business in the past. But, no, that wasn't enough for you. Before leaving you grabbed a huge stack of napkins that you discreetly tucked under your arm before slinking away. Judging by your designer top, shoes and aforementioned eyewear, I’m guessing you can well afford to purchase your own napkins. Either that, or make a purchase of some kind and ask if it’s OK to take that many napkins with you. And if it is permissible, leave a tip! The rest of us consumers are subsidizing your selfishness.

THE FLY

Bernies Are Back A panel this past weekend affirmed ERIC BAUMAN’s election as head of the California Democratic Party. But the brannigan doesn’t appear to be over quite yet. Bay Area Dem organizer KIMBERLY ELLIS, who lost by 57 votes, vowed to challenge the decision in court. Drama over party leadership has permeated every level of the organization, including in Santa Clara County’s Democratic Central Committee (DCC), which supported a recount for transparency’s sake. But South Bay Dems say they won’t let the infighting between Berniecrats and establishment wings of the party distract them from advancing their platform both nationally and here at home. “I’m not going to call it a distraction,” DCC campaign services director JEFFREY CARDENAS tells Fly. “But I would like to see the people who are worked up about allegations of voter fraud end up being the same people who show up to phone bank for these congressional districts we’re trying to win They back. We can walk and Did chew gum at the same What? time.” A newly chartered SEND TIPS TO club aims to do exactly FLY@ that by channeling METRONEWS. the frustrations and COM energies of progressives lured to the Democratic Party by Vermont Sen. BERNIE SANDERS’ presidential campaign. With just a couple of meetings under its belt, the Bayshore Progressive Democrats—one of two new clubs chartered by the DCC earlier this month—counts upward of 100 members. KACEY CARPENTER, a Bernie booster who co-founded the club with veteran activist MARGARET OKUZUMI, says he shares Ellis’ concerns about the party’s statewide elections. “It’s not so much the outcome,” he says. “I think trust in democracy is the most important thing. You need to have faith in the process.” Saying that, Carpenter doesn’t want the infighting to take away from the broader mission. “Our club hasn’t been waiting,” he says. “We’ve already been organizing. We’re leading it from the bottom up, not the top down, which we learned from Bernie.”

SVNEWS

Podcast Playbook AIDER & ABETTOR Public defenders Sajid Khan and Avi Singh set out to change the narrative on criminal justice in Santa Clara County with their podcast.

Public defenders’ podcast starts new convo on criminal justice BY TORI TRUSCHEIT

H

ENRY SIRES PARKED his green Oldsmobile in the East Foothills to smoke weed with friends on the morning of March 25, 2015. Little did he know, tensions were running high for local law enforcement. A day earlier, in San Jose, a suicidal man had ambushed and killed police officer Michael Johnson. But when a cop approached Sires’ car, he panicked, bumping a police cruiser as he tried to flee the scene. The officer shot at the car six times, injuring Sires’ left hand. When the charges came down, Sires was accused of felony assault on an officer with a deadly weapon.

San Jose public defender Avi Singh took his case, and twice the jury came back hung, leading the District Attorney’s Office to drop the charges. Singh rejoiced with Sires and his family, who the defense attorney had gotten to know well. “I’m going to keep believing that people are more than their police reports,” Singh says. “They could fall down again—be addicted to drugs, make bad choices—but it’s still worth believing in their cases and fighting for them.” Singh has worked in Santa Clara County’s Public Defender’s Office since 2009. It wasn’t until this January that he and his friend and colleague, Sajid Khan, started the Aider and Abettor podcast to shed light on their profession. They’ve released eight episodes of the podcast so far, each about an hour long, and though they keep details of their own cases confidential, the attorneys offer a

rare insiders’ take on high-profile crimes. Singh edits the recordings and adds splices of music—Khan listens to DMX and Tupac to fire himself up before trial—and tries to ensure that it’s a fun listen regardless of the audience, whether public defenders, Law and Order addicts or tech engineers on their Caltrain commutes. The goal is to counter default tough-on-crime positions. The attorneys want to “shift the narrative in terms of how our clients are perceived and how humanity looks at each other,” Khan says. “The absence of public defenders talking about the truth of what happens in the court process has created a vacuum,” says Raj Jayadev, founder of Silicon Valley De-Bug, a media and advocacy organization active on law enforcement issues. “As a result of that vacuum, what’s happened is the tough-on-crime, knee-jerk mentality, and prosecutors have been able to dictate how the public consumes these issues.” A side effect of the podcast, Singh says, has been building a new public

defender office. Singh, 33, is on the team at the main public defender’s office. Both have trim salt-and-pepper beards, though they don’t look alike otherwise. Judges still mix them up anyway, congratulating them on cases the other attorney won. Taking such a public stance is rare in the world of public defenders, who aren’t known for hosting flashy press conferences like prosecutors. This is partly because they don’t want to risk sharing information that would compromise their clients. In their most recent podcast, the attorneys explain why Lauren KirkCoehlo, who was convicted of a hate crime for vandalizing a mosque in Davis, shouldn’t serve time. In Brock Turner’s high-profile sexual assault case at Stanford, the pair argued that Brock Turner’s short sentence was sufficient. Neither stance was taken because Khan, who is Muslim, condones hate crimes or sexual assault. Khan sees a direct connection between his clients and the public outcry against Judge Aaron Persky in the Brock Turner case. He worries that because of the vitriol aimed at Persky, judges will be afraid to appear soft on crime, even subconsciously, and his clients will receive harsher sentences as a result. “Our clients are below the headlines, in the nondescript quiet courtrooms across our state,” Khan says. “No one’s covering their cases, and that’s where the injustices or the perpetuation of mass incarceration occur the most. But they often are intangibly influenced by the highprofile media cases.” Singh’s focus is practical when considering what kind of sentence someone is likely to receive. “Does this person get some shot at rehabilitation?” he says. “Does the public become safer?” They take pride in their roles, especially in the face of antiimmigrant sentiment that has swept across the nation over the last several years. “It’s cool that two IndianAmerican sons of immigrants are fighting these battles,” Khan says. “We’re talking about these constitutional principles, trying to breathe life into them, trying to make America beautiful.” Read a longer version of this story on SanJoseInside.com. The Aider & Abettor podcast can be found on iTunes.

narrative. “We have a very unique jury pool” in Santa Clara County, he says, which includes an influx of immigrants and tech workers. “Sometimes it’s essential to be able to bridge the gaps in the jury pool with our client population,” Singh adds, noting that the podcast can help with that. For example, in one episode, Singh and Khan explained how engineers on a jury might assume that a “San Jo 408” tattoo indicates gang membership, rather than simple San Jose pride. Capital cases can take six weeks, meaning juries often consist of retirees and salaried workers, rather than blue-collar potential jurists who can’t miss work but who might be more sympathetic to Singh and Khan’s clients. Michele Diederichs, an assistant public defender who has supervised both Khan and Singh, calls the podcast a “valuable addition” to the criminal justice conversation. “The thing we fear most as public defenders, and defense attorneys in general, is that a jury sees our clients as monsters,” she says. “These two have a gift for relaying the humanity of our clients, the struggles they go through, the adversity they face, and the pain they experience.” The podcast idea bubbled up on New Year’s Day, when Khan texted Singh with a resolution to make their lunchtime conversations into a public podcast. Singh, a podcast geek, had gotten Khan hooked on Serial, the hit nonfiction podcast about a Muslim teen wrongly convicted of murder. The more the pair recorded, the more the podcast felt like an important forum to talk about issues, such as the right to counsel, presumption of innocence and individual dignity. Those are big issues, but empathy is a big part of Singh and Khan’s work. “Now that I’m a dad, I see my younger clients as my boys,” Khan says. “These clients could be my sons, or vice versa.” Both Khan and Singh have two children under the age of 5. They’re also both first-generation kids of Indian immigrants, lovers of Warriors basketball and grew up playing high school football—Singh in the East Bay and Khan in Milpitas. Khan, 34, has been a public defender since 2008 and works capital cases in the county’s alternate

NOBODY SP

I

T’S NOT EASY to watch Hulk Hogan’s mighty heart break. Last summer, there he sat in a Florida courtroom, wearing a black bandanna of mourning, chewing on his biker mustache as he tried to rehabilitate his reputation in court.

The trouble began in 2012, when the celebrity gossip website Gawker published a cuck-video of Hogan having sex with his BFF’s wife, Ms. Heather Clem. The BFF—Todd Clem, a.k.a. shock-radio personality Bubba The Love Sponge—covertly ran the camera, and Hogan claimed in court that he knew nothing about the filming; Todd Clem took

the Fifth. The story gained extra piquancy because Hogan was the best man at Mr. The Love Sponge’s wedding. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his wife for his friends. When Gawker—accused of invasion of privacy and personality infringement, among other claims—refused to take down a

post of the sex video, even after receiving a cease-and-desist letter, Bollea v. Gawker opened up in the Pinellas County Courthouse in Fort Lauderdale. When the smoke cleared, Gawker and its subsidiaries were left to face the bad end of a remarkably generous judgment of $140.1 million aggregate. The website and its subsidiaries went bankrupt almost immediately, and Univision scooped up the remaining assets for $135 million. It seems strangely coincidental that the downfall of everyone’s favorite (and, at times, most hated) online tabloid coincided with the rise of a

different tangerine-colored figment of 1980s wrestling, Donald Trump. Beyond journalists, few seemed to realize Gawker’s death was a harbinger of a greater war against the media, financed by wealthy individuals. As “fake news” became a rallying cry at his speeches, Trump gained ground on Hillary Clinton. While this blustering strongman rose to political power, who really had the attention span to keep tabs on an old-time grappler’s sex tape lawsuit in a Florida courtroom? Unfortunately, Bollea v. Gawker was not just the usual random titillation. It was later discovered

11

Brian Knappenberger, director of Nobody Speak, said he encountered trouble conveying the importance of what happened in the Florida courtroom. He’s met people who thought it couldn’t have happened to a nicer website, and that Gawker had it coming. “Yeah, all the time,” Knappenberger said by phone. “I get it a lot, and it’s kind of bizarre. Or I hear that idea that Gawker actually courted the lawsuit. I don’t think they understand that this kind of lawsuit can be used against any outlet, even in a country that prides itself on freedom of expression.

“We’re living in a time when the rich are so much richer than they’ve ever been, and because of the vanishing of classified ad revenue, journalism is more vulnerable than ever.” To some, Hogan’s victory and the sinking of Gawker was a warning. As Nicholas Lemann, professor emeritus of the Columbia Journalism school, put it in The New Yorker, “Journalists and their lawyers ought to be arming themselves for a protracted war.” Hogan’s point during the Florida trial was that the leaked tape hurt him as a man. Hulk Hogan was simply a character, created by one

Terry Gene Bollea. His lawyers argued that when Hulk later went on Howard Stern to joke about the tape—to boast of both his marital and his martial prowess—that he was doing so in character. The real Bollea was not actually rocking a 10-inch schwanzstucker, as he had told Stern on the air. Instead, he was a quiet and humble guy. Bollea, not “the larger than life, AllAmerican professional wrestler” as Hogan testified, who ached for very expensive closure. When Hogan’s lawyers, in a

that Hulk Hogan had a secret partner funding his lawsuit. The money paid for the sordid case was, in fact, payback against Gawker. The secret donor to Hulk Hogan was Peter Thiel, the prominent Silicon Valley tech financier. The trial is the focus of a new Netflix documentary, Nobody Speak: Trials of the Free Press. The New York Times dismissed the documentary— “Almost nothing in Nobody Speak breaks new ground,” critic Ben Kenigsberg wrote—but it’s bizarre how little talk went on in the valley about a titan of tech’s actions in putting a media outlet to death.

calculated move, dropped the “infliction of emotional distress” claim, Gawker Media’s insurer, Nautilus, was no longer on the hook for damages. The protracted legal battle between Hogan and Gawker lasted several years, but it was only in May 2016 that first Forbes, and then the New York Times revealed Thiel had been paying for the wrestler’s expensive litigators.

‘I don’t think they understand that this kind of lawsuit can be used against any outlet, even in a country that prides itself on freedom of expression.’ Thiel, an early investor in Facebook and a founder of PayPal, is by no means the richest entrepreneur in the valley, but he’s done pretty well. Forbes estimates his net worth at $2.7 billion, making him No. 825 on the magazine’s real-time list of “The World's Billionaires” as of July. In a Valleywag editorial, Owen Thomas, the then-editor of Gawker’s tech blog, outed Thiel as gay. Thomas, gay himself, concluded the exposure with, “More power to him.” It’s this century’s way of saying, “Not that there’s anything wrong with that.” One could argue that this outing was a way of embarrassing Thiel. One could also point out that in a culture where the bro-ethos rules supreme, identifying Theil as gay was a way of reminding the lords of the valley that gay people are everywhere. One could compare and contrast the way the first openly gay Fortune 500 CEO, Tim Cook of Apple, handled a similar situation: After being accidentally outed by CNBC, Cook publicly

discussed his sexual orientation in an editorial in 2014. Gawker had a self-declared mandate to publish stories other outlets were scared to touch— for reasons of what’s left of good taste in our society, of lack of the usual vetting, or of just plain ridiculousness. “The stories journalists exchange among themselves,” is how co-founder Nick Denton explained Gawker’s mission in Nobody Speak. Frivolity was essential. The site’s genuine scoops, such as video of Toronto Mayor Rob Ford sucking on a crack pipe, dueled with the epochal “No-Talent Hack Cat Fired for Sucking,” a story about a pussycat understudy dropped from the Broadway production of Breakfast at Tiffany’s. The site did, however, do useful and funny work: Caity Weaver documenting the Paula Deen damage-control cruise, Tom Scocca’s essay bringing light to rape allegations against Bill Cosby, a series of stories on leaked Sony documents that revealed in-house racism at the studio, and Sam Biddle pinging the valley’s upper crust on Valleywag. And on and on. The payback to Gawker followed years of stories about Thiel and his cohorts. Gawker reported on Thiel’s Facebook partner, Sean Parker, throwing a redwood-trampling wedding that ended with a $2.5 million penalty Parker paid to the state of California. They also ran articles on the big fiscal losses earlier this decade at Thiel’s Clarium Capital. A developer of PayPal and one of the initial financiers of Facebook, Thiel has always been ahead of his time. He’s contradicted himself over the years, as a great mind will. He’s donated to the nonprofit Freedom of the Press Foundation, which has since denounced Thiel’s big-payback donation to Hogan’s lawyers. The foundation’s spokesman, Trevor Timm wrote, “Do you think that because Gawker’s demise is something you agree with that the same thing won’t happen to newspapers you like in the future?” Theil has a motto: “There is no middle ground. Either don’t throw punches or strike quickly and end it

BULLY GETS THE HORNS Peter Thiel funded Hulk Hogan’s lawsuit against Gawker after being outed as gay in 2007.

quickly.” Knappenberger had tried to get an on-camera interview with the financier “to see what his perspective was.” Alas, like many attempts by the press to get Thiel on the record (including this outlet), it went nowhere. “We tried a couple of times and got a call back from one of this people,” Knappenberger said. “He hasn’t been opaque about his participation in the Hogan suit.” Indeed, Thiel wrote a New York Times op-ed and said that what he did was “less about revenge and more about a specific type of deterrence.” Last year, at a Halloween appearance at the National Press Club, he described Gawker as a “singularly sociopathic bully.” He added, “These were not journalists.” Many a journalist has tried and

failed to get Thiel to expound on these thoughts. “I would have liked to hear from him, and the fact that he doesn’t want to join in in a public discussion doesn’t reflect well on him,” Knappenberger said. Personally, the director said he wouldn’t have run the column outing Thiel if he’d been Gawker’s editor. “That doesn’t mean anything, though,” he said. “The legal boundaries aren’t crossed when that happens.” Gawker’s Denton, who is also gay, maintained that Thiel’s sexual orientation was an open secret in the valley but hidden from the public to preserve financial opportunities. Nearly a decade later, Thiel stood at the Republican convention in Cleveland and announced he was “proud to be gay” to reassure the world that Trump

KIDS’ ZONE had nothing against homosexuals. Obviously, the Republican’s semibig tent is packed with people who pray their knees off for gay people’s conversion to heterosexuality. And those are the gentle ones. Thiel serves as an adviser to the president, who continues to call the media an enemy of the state. Trump sicced his crowds on the press as “the world’s most dishonest people” and slyly urged his followers to attack, in such winking language that he could deny it later. “We’re gonna have people sue you like you’ve never been sued before,” Trump bellowed from the podium. And his daily tweets against “fake news” continue. Threats calling for attacks and harassment against reporters continue. In the past few months a

Guardian reporter was body-slammed by a congressional candidate, while a reporter was arrested for simply trying to interview Secretary of Health and Human Services Tom Price. It may not be long before shooting the messenger is more than just an expression. Knappenberger was editing Nobody Speak for Sundance when Trump won the election. He doesn’t have much to say about that victory, a conversation killer if ever there was one. The director of We Are Legion: The Story of the Hacktivists and The Internet’s Own Boy: The Story of Aaron Swartz has carved out his own particular end of the documentary field. ROUGH CUT ‘Nobody Speak’ director Brian Knappenberger says he’s lost faith in ‘techno-utopia.’ optimism about what the internet could do. “Fifteen years ago, I was the kind of person who believed in techno-utopia. Five to six years later, I saw the downside of that. I’m fascinated at how our lives are shifting, and how much information is stored in insecure areas. It’s shaking tried and true notions of civil liberty, and I find that tension really interesting.” It sometimes seems that it is a double standard—that the people in charge of this valley want to know everything possible, and yet they want to stay hidden behind one-way glass. They see everything, but their privacy is paramount. “I’m worried about the average person,” Knappenberger said. “It’s a bizarre position. There’s so much we put online, with the mass NSA surveillance. They have access to so much of what we do. It’s a massive, massive lack of transparency, a huge

imbalance because they know what people are doing, and yet we don’t know what’s going on.” According to the director, numerous examples of what’s chronicled in Nobody Speak have occurred since his film debuted at Sundance. Knappenberger also gives a multi-sided account of the Sheldon Adelson defamation case in his movie, which ended with the casino billionaire taking over the Las Vegas Review Journal. “John Oliver and Time Warner get sued by John Murray, a coal billionaire,” Knappenberger said. “Then there’s Sarah Palin’s New York Times suit, alleging that she’d been defamed by connection to the Gabby Giffords shooting. And Idaho billionaire Frank VanderSloot tried to put Mother Jones magazine out of business.” VanderSloot once bankrolled an ad saying that gay marriage might lead

to animal-human marriages, and—in a reversal of Thiel’s big payback— VanderSloot was even alleged to have outed a gay reporter of Mother Jones. The left-wing, nonprofit investigative magazine summed up the legal battle, which it won after millions were spent on lawyers: “Legally, what we fought over was what, precisely, the terms ‘bashing’ and ‘outing’ meant. … But make no mistake: This was not a dispute over a few words. It was a push, by a super-rich businessman and donor, to wipe out news coverage that he disapproved of. Had he been successful, it would have been a chilling indicator that the 0.01 percent can control not only the financing of political campaigns, but also the media coverage of those campaigns.” There have always been men of wealth going after the press, as in the case of pressure by the robber

A Stanford associate, railroad tycoon Collis Huntington, who had gotten unpaidfor land from the government, asked Bierce to name his price to lay off. Bierce replied “My price is $130 million. If, when you are ready to pay, I happen to be out of town, you may hand it over to my friend, the treasurer of the United States.” It’s hard to find that kind of brio today in the media, and we’re entering uncharted territory about how the wealthy can snuff dissent. So what should journalists be doing? “They should be rethinking libel insurance and they should be looking into ways of protecting themselves,” Knappenberger said. “Lowell Bergman, the CBS journalist who was the subject of the film The Insider, teaches journalism grad school at Berkeley. One of his exercises is getting all the students in his class to sue each other for libel, making a mock play out of how it happens. In the meantime, they might want to end the practice of writing softball stories with the powerful in exchange for access. A rethinking of that kind of approach could help, and it proves it’s a good idea for journalists to ignore useless press conferences.”

An inside look at San Jose politics

THE DEPARTED Robert Grodt, 28, died on the front lines while fighting ISIS with a U.S.-backed rebel group in Syria.

South Bay Man Killed Fighting ISIS in Syria BY JENNIFER WADSWORTH In an interview nine days before his death on the front lines fighting ISIS, Robert Grodt discussed how most Americans know nothing about the Kurdish struggle for autonomy. “You don’t see Kurdistan on the globe anywhere,” the 28-year-old Mountain View native tells the videographer. “It doesn’t show up.” The only reason Grodt’s family knows about it, he continued, is because he enlisted in the YPG—a Kurdish initialism for the People’s Protection Units, a U.S.-backed force battling the Islamic State in Syria. On July 5, Grodt lost his life in a firefight on the outskirts of Raqqa. Within a week, stories about his death called attention to the cause that drew him halfway across the world. “If he wanted to teach us about all this stuff, I wish he could have gone about it another way,” one of his sisters, Stephanie Eason, tells

Metro. “But I know my brother did good in the world.” Grodt, who was born in Mountain View but spent most of his childhood with his five siblings in Simi Valley, came of age as an activist in the Bay Area. “Even back in 2009, he was talking about the YPG,” says Alysa Cisneros, who lived with Grodt in San Jose and worked with him on social justice campaigns in Santa Cruz at the time. “He was an idealist ... He always looked to that north star.” That conviction led Grodt in 2011 to hitchhike across the country to join the first Occupy Wall Street camp in Zuccotti Park as a volunteer medic. That’s where he met his partner, fellow protester Kaylee Dedrick. When cops peppersprayed her in the face, Grodt rushed to help her. Video of the incident went viral, turning her into a symbol of the movement.

The pair fell in love. The next year, they gave birth to Tegan, who became a symbol in her own right. Tabloids dubbed her the “First Occubaby.” Dedrick says, “He loved his daughter.” But when Grodt told her about going to Rojava, one of two Kurdish front lines in the war against ISIS, she says, there was no reasoning with him. Serving the Kurds, for Grodt, didn’t just mean picking up a rifle, Eason adds. He went to build, weld, teach and develop bonds with people. To honor Grodt’s legacy, his family says they will continue to share his story and advocate for the causes he died fighting for in Syria. “Even in his death, he’s teaching us about the struggle he believed in,” Eason says. A memorial service has been set for Aug. 5 in Simi Valley.

Seven people died from domestic violence last year in Santa Clara County, according to a new report from the district attorney’s office. Five of them were victims and two were perpetrators shot by police. All took place in San Jose. The number represents a decrease from the year prior, when 13 people died in domestic violence-related incidents. It also falls below the 22-year average of about a dozen a year for this county. Last year, local agencies referred 5,101 domestic violence cases to the DA—an uptick of 815 from the year prior. Of those, 55 percent resulted in criminal charges—a decrease from 63 percent the year prior. In 2017, the county is on pace to surpass the number of deaths last year. Local law enforcement has reported four domestic violence deaths in the past month alone. friends “It is a destructive crime that strikes within all our communities regardless of age, money, ethnicity, gender,” asstistant DA Cindy Hendrickson says. “It’s vital that we identify it before the coroner gets called. Delay can be deadly.”

San Jose Sharks Reporter Stabbed Police are still searching for a woman suspected of stabbing a Mercury News reporter at his Willow Glen home. The victim, identified by colleagues as San Jose Sharks beat reporter Paul Gackle, was stabbed multiple times. The Merc, which did not name Gackle, reported that he was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. San Jose police responded at 2:20am Friday to the 800 block of Redbird Drive—near Almaden Expressway and Curtner Avenue— on reports of a stabbing. According to ABC7 News, the victim rents a standalone unit behind a home. Neighbors said they heard a loud noise before the victim emerged from his home to find help. A neighbor dialed 9-1-1. Gackle has not returned a call for comment. —Jennifer Wadsworth

The Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football biennial Gold Cup soccer tournament is wrapping up with the championship match between the United States and Jamaica. It should be a close match, as the U.S. has shown an ability to advance far into the Gold Cup bracket in recent years—last winning in 2013—while the Jamaican national team, a.k.a. The Reggae Boyz, are entering their second straight CONCACAF final. Though they ultimately lost to Mexico in 2015, it’s worth noting they knocked out the U.S. that year during the semi-finals. (NV)

Bay Area O.G. Andre Nickatina returns to San Jose with more tales from the Fillmore. The guy has been doing it for longer than your favorite SoundCloud rapper has been alive, but don’t think his age has rusted his wit or his tongue. Even the passing of time won’t stop him from heating up the venue with his decadent baritone and knack for infectious hooks. Nickatina’s output has been relatively minimal this year, but considering he’s got 17 albums and countless other projects worth of material to pull from, the BackBar has nothing to worry about. (YK)

David Letterman complimented Norm Macdonald recently, calling the SNL alumnus one of the “funniest of the funny” on Macdonald’s webcast talk show. The Canadian standup veteran has been firing off wry observations since 1987—delivering his often-offbeat punchlines with a knowing smirk that can sometimes feel exclusionary. Perhaps that’s part of the reason he was booted from the Weekend Update desk and ultimately SNL in 1998 (though he claims he was canned for calling O.J. Simpson a “murderer” on air). Macdonald got the last laugh, returning to host SNL in 1999 after his starring role in the cult comedy Dirty Work. (NV)

Fri, 7pm, Free Los Gatos Coffee Roasting Co.

The jazz is coming back to Palo Alto as the Stanford Shopping Center hosts the 31st annual Summer Jazz Concert Series, produced by SFJAZZ. This Thursday, the Oakland-based horn ensemble Brass Magic takes the stage. Informed by a wide range of musical styles, including world jazz, pop, hip-hop and electronic, Brass Magic was formed by a core of musicians who first met while studying at The New School in New York. They are known for their lively originals and innovative covers—like their honking, syncopated rendition of Animal Collective’s spazzy “Peacebone.” (YK)

Ren Geisick has been singing since she was a child, but it wasn’t until adulthood that she fell in love with jazz. Geisick earned a degree in jazz vocal performance from Cal State-Long Beach, where she fine-tuned her talent and sound. The past couple years she has performed with Dulce Musica throughout the South Bay. Geisick was presented the DownBeat Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Jazz Vocalist, and soon after won the 2015 Jazz Search West competition. Geisick shares her new single, “Love Song #1,” this Friday, as she prepares her debut solo album, Don’t Know Why, produced by Grammy winner Jesse Harris. (PR)

Goapele was raised in a California community of South African exiles. Raised by politically active parents who instilled in the artist a revolutionary spirit from a young age, her name means “to move forward” in the Setswana language. These words are reflected in her progressive lyricism and in the neo-soul and trip-hop sounds that define her music. Self-love and social consciousness are at the core of her latest EP, Dreamseeker, wherein the singer-songwriter returns to her roots with soulful tracks like “Power”—a sensual single about reclaiming an individuality “as bright as the sun.” (CM)

A New Web YOUNG SPIDER Jason Reynolds, author of the new YA novel ‘Miles Morales: Spider-Man,’ will speak at Kepler’s.

Jason Reynolds talks creating an African-American Spider-Man BY RICHARD VON BUSACK

P

LEASE NOTE THE inside joke from Spider-Man: Homecoming, making up somewhat for the rotten Easter-egg Captain America tossed at us at the end of the film. What a big nerd-chuckle in the theater it was when Donald Glover showed up. He played Aaron Davis, a minor criminal Spider-Man did his worst to interrogate. Davis gives up the info Spider-Man was pathetically trying to scare him out of. He, Aaron, wants The Vulture

and his space-weapons off the streets. After all, Aaron’s nephew lives in the neighborhood. Chuckle, said the fanboys. They knew the nephew was a sly reference to artist Sara Pichelli and writer Brian Michael Bendis’ comic series Spider-Men, which finds Peter Parker and Miles Morales uniting as a multi-culti web-slinging duo. More chuckle fodder: Glover had even done the voice of Morales on a Disneyanimated show. After Peter Parker turned up dead—dead for a while, anyway—a radioactive spider chomped Morales, a 13-year-old Brooklyn boy of AfroHispanic descent. The new heir to the cowl and webshooters is now

the subject of a young-adult novel. Miles Morales: Spider-Man is by the distinguished Brooklyn writer Jason Reynolds, the National Book Award finalist behind Ghost and When I Was the Greatest, among other titles. Miles will be published Aug. 1, and Morales is coming to Kepler’s Books the following day for a discussion. Reynolds is recognized for penning books for young adults that address the hard subjects of race, prejudice and injustice in America—drawing upon his background as a person of color to inform his tales. Growing up black in a poor Washington D.C. neighborhood—in the midst of the crack and AIDS epidemics—Reynolds wasn’t a big reader. When he was young, there weren’t many African American heroes in literature for him to find, and it was rarer still to find young adult fiction with protagonists that looked like him.

In a recent interview with the School Library Journal, Reynolds said he felt it was important that this rebooted Spidey has darker skin under his spandex—and not only because it will give legions of young comic book fans of color someone to relate to. It also gives the Spider-Man series the chance to deal with themes that wouldn’t necessarily have made sense when Peter Parker was the man behind the mask. In Reynolds’ telling, issues of survivor’s guilt, the cycle of poverty and the allure of the streets are all explored. “This is the part of Miles’s story that matters most to me, what makes him real, because this is the story of so many of the potential teenage superheroes in our neighborhoods and schools,” Reynolds told School Library Journal. Morales is now the official Spider-Man in the Marvel Comics universe—Spider-Man without an asterisk, as Bendis put it. By keeping Morales urban, Marvel is doubling down on the best idea in Spider-Man: Homecoming, which is to pose SpiderMan as a municipal hero instead of an international Avenger. Morales will also be Spider-Man again in an as-yet untitled full-length animated movie due in December 2018, with Mahershala Ali of Moonlight voicing Aaron Davis and Shameik Moore performing the voice of Spider-Man. The original idea of a Spider-Man of color came because of Marvel’s belief that Obama was leading us into a post-racial America. Morales outlasted Obama, defying the nowfading moans of the kind of fans who lose a little bit of their childhood— nay, their souls—when a black Batman is hypothesized, or when Doctor Who turns into a girl. Such fans ought to be reminded that Spider-Man has been Japanese and Turkish already: check YouTube to see the awesome awesomeness of Japanese and Turkish Spidey. Would a sensible person care what race Our Hero was, as long as he stays half-spider?

So everybody dances, from the youngest student to the New Ballet Summer oldest student, and everyone’s pushing themselves.” Intensive Showcase Students will perform an abridged version of Paquita—a romantic ballet about a Spanish Jul 29, 3pm, $13.50 gypsy girl who falls for a French nobleman—in Hammer Theatre Center, San Jose addition to shorter, new works like Electric Sheep, choreographed by Rawson with the the fitting Silicon Valley theme of artificial intelligence in mind. World-famous ballet dancer José Manuel Carreño coached the dancers for Paquita, which Rawson described as “the technical highlight” of the show. The hour-long retelling of the original ballet will include a well known wedding scene in its historical 19th century choreography, during which the program’s highest level dancers will take center stage. Complementing this classical favorite is a series of contemporary pieces choreographed by the school for its summer pupils. One of them, a sevenminute piece titled Electric Sheep, is an abstract ballet inspired by an electronic score that Rawson’s brother, musician and Cola frontman Cliff Rawson, composed. “There’s a little melody in it that makes me think of reaching beyond,” Rawson says, making it the perfect score to kick off the showcase. All month, the dancers have reached beyond their comfort zones and the upcoming show marks the climax of this rigorous effort. Rawson emphasizes that while the showcase may not be as fully developed as past New Ballet productions like The Nutcracker or Swan Lake, it’s a chance for the community to appreciate the achievements of these young dancers. “This is a chance to see the students being students,” Rawson says. “No sets, no costumes—this is purely about dancing.” —Camille Miller

metroactive FILM

Black Widow DAMNED SPOT The impressive Florence Pugh plays a calculating killer in ‘Lady Macbeth.’

Excellent ‘Lady Macbeth’ delivers cold beauty, moody melodrama BY RICHARD VON BUSACK

T

HE FILM IS called Lady Macbeth, but it’s less like Shakespeare than The Postman Always Rings Twice. It’s based on Nikolai Leskov’s The Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District, first published in 1865 in a magazine edited by Dostoyevsky. The story of tyranny and murder was the source for Dmitri Shostakovich’s last opera. Transferred from the Russian hinterlands to a backward northeast corner of England, Lady Macbeth asks a familiar question from decades of

melodrama: are murderesses made or born? Debuting feature director William Oldroyd leaves that question open. The much abused, then much abusing, protagonist, Katherine (Florence Pugh, impressive), is transformed from a piece of living property to a chortling killer. Wearing a cobwebby veil on her head, she’s married, and her maid Anna (Naomi Ackie) fixes her up for the wedding night. A small gathering of tyrants attend the wedding. One is Katherine’s vile, rotten-toothed fatherin-law Boris (Christopher Fairbanks), a recently ennobled coal baron. The groom is Boris’ equally nasty son Alexander (Paul Hilton), who has the spoiling-for-a-fight look of a jaded old rock star. Alexander’s idea of seduction is ordering his bride to strip and face the wall. She stands exposed

while we hear the wet, flappingfish sound of him masturbating off camera. When an emergency takes the father and son out on business, the new bride is forbidden to go out and explore the woods. Margaret has been alone for some time when she encounters the new horse-groom Sebastian (the musician Cosmo Jarvis); the unwashed brute later breaks into Margaret’s room. Oldroyd’s sleek and speedy melodrama has a lot of beauty in it, and not in just the area’s wildness and waterfalls. In deliberately banal yet wanton performances, Pugh turns down the candlepower of her prettiness. It’s still visible. She’s impassive as she’s cruelly lashed into corsets, and when she’s seen sitting, bored, in a dark blue satin hoopskirt. Her elaborate braids match the oak carvings in a fireplace, and it’s as if she’s evolving into a piece of furniture. When the pig Alexander calls Katherine a pig for gratifying her appetites, we realize we’ve seen glimpses of a porcine satiation in her face after one of her nights with Sebastian. After Alexander the husband

damns Katherine as a whore, she fetches Sebastian out of hiding, hikes up her nightshirt and mounts him right in front of the impotent bully she married. Trysting out in the wet leaves, the adulteress wrings a promise out of Sebastian to stay with her “to the cross, to the prison, to the grave, to the sky.” The tooelaborate vows say it all: what’s here is not romance, it’s clean pure lust. When that lust is satisfied, what’s left is the matter of who will dominate whom…easy to figure, given that Katherine is the lady of the manor, and Sebastian is a stable-man who sleeps on the ground. We see Anna gathering mushrooms, as in The Beguiled; Lady Macbeth has the musk and tanginess that Coppola’s film didn’t deliver. And when we see Anna scrubbing her mistresses’ back as if it were a greasy floor, we’re in a darker melo than we were in My Cousin Rachel. Oldroyd deserves praise for some ingenious sailing with the prevailing winds. The British describe Jane Austen-mania as “Bonnet tradition films.” At a quick glance Lady Macbeth looks like such a film, but it’s colder, trickier and bloodier. Many of the cast are of African descent, a sentence I wouldn’t write except that, yeah, I noticed, and I doubt if anything should be read into it. It’s a similar case to Andrea Arnold’s Wuthering Heights with its black Healthcliff. The sons and daughters of slaves were present in the British life of the time. Colorblind casting fits a tale of plausible viciousness, matching the ruthless rich with the scheming poor. No matter what their color, oppressed people jockey for position, using everything from violence to gossip. A little kid who turns up in the third act could be accused of trying to use his cuteness for his personal advantage. Even the cat of the house looks manipulative and comfortless, sitting on the chair across from Katherine, staring up at her murderous keeper, a look of scorn on its face.

metroactive FILM CLASH OF THE WOLVES/ THE JAZZ SINGER

(1925/1927) Found 99 years ago by an American soldier named Lee Duncan in an abandoned German military kennel, the puppy Rin Tin Tin—named after a doll that French children sometimes gave our soldiers—was brought to Hollywood as a stunt dog. His popularity took off drastically. Talk was that he saved Warner Bros. by selling so many tickets; this four-legged superstar in even had a radio show. “Rinty” plays Lobo, a hybrid wolf/dog in the Sierra Nevadas driven into a desert borax-mining town by a wildfire; it’s an Androcles and the Lion story about a miner (Charles Farrell of 7th Heaven) who aids Lobo’s injured paw, with payoff later on. Not available on any streaming service. Dennis James is at the Stanford’s Wurlitzer. BILLED WITH The Jazz Singer. A cantor’s son (Al Jolson) longs to perform popular music, but his father considers it a scandal before the goyim; in blackface, on his knees, Jolson performs “Mammy,” an iconic and grotesque sight. It wasn’t the first sound film—numerous other productions and shorts had used some form of sound technology. And there were only about 100 theaters in the U.S. that could play the sound portions of this film. Yet here was the melodrama that put the stake into the heart of the silent cinema— Jolson’s six songs and scattering of dialogue electrified the audience and changed technology. (Plays Jul 29-31 in Palo Alto at the Stanford Theatre.) (RvB)

FOOTLIGHT PARADE/ PICTURE SNATCHER

(both 1933) San Jose-born Lloyd Bacon directed Footlight Parade, a fine introduction to the ridiculously entertaining, tantalizingly bizarre world of the Warner Bros. musical. James Cagney plays Chester Kent, a besieged creator of live musical prologues staged as curtain-raisers at movie theaters. If you've ever wondered what it must have been like to be choreographer Busby Berkeley, churning out about a dozen enormous production numbers a year during the Depression, Footlight Parade gives a clue. We see the pressure put on Kent, who is cheated by his partners, blackmailed by his ex-wife and pressed up against impossible deadlines while trying to create larger and larger extravaganzas. It's the production numbers we don't see that sound the most hallucinatory; some of his touring companies are doing musical numbers on the themes of the Russian Revolution, ghosts, bullfighters and the Swiss Navy. Meanwhile, Kent is gnawed by lesser problems: a defeatist dance instructor (whiny

Frank McHugh) and an idiotic censor (Hugh Herbert), foreshadowing the wrath of the Production Code to come in the next few years. Meanwhile, Cagney shows off his considerable talents as a song-and-dance man, and Joan Blondell is attractive and tough as a loyal partner who loves him. As for the numbers: "By a Waterfall" is staged in a 20,000-gallon tank and capped with a 70-foot-high wedding cake of fountains and chorus girls; "Sittin' on a Backyard Fence" is irresistible kitsch (kind of how you'd hope the musical Cats would be, with the backup singers having the verse “Meow! Meow!”) and, as always, the enthusiastic if labored tap dancing of Ruby Keeler. Keeler is tricked up in Chinese makeup, in the finale, "Shanghai Lil." It's one melancholy song, but Berkeley diffuses the number into a folk-art salute to FDR and the New Deal. The unauthorized sequel: Guy Maddin’s The Saddest Music in the World (2003). BILLED WITH Picture Snatcher Another Bacon film, shot in 15 days. Let Cagney describe it, in a quote from Cagney on Cagney: “Interesting title, which designated my role in the film. I played a former crook who ‘straightens out’ and takes up work as a picture snatcher. This was a man hired by the newspapers to steal photographs of people who are trying to keep those photographs out of the paper.” The fast direction meant that the actor’s fights weren’t rehearsed sufficiently; Cagney broke a tooth when Ralph Bellamy hit him, and co-star Alice White got a serious wallop over what was supposed to be Cagney’s pulled punch. (Plays Jul 27-28 in Palo Alto.) (RvB)

FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH

(1982) 35th anniversary screening of Amy Heckerling’s comedy, still the best and the brightest of the '80s teen movies, though it spawned a still-toxic layer of brat-pack movies. Based on Cameron Crowe's undercover report for Rolling Stone, it follows the social and sexual anxieties of a crowd at a suburban Los Angeles high school. Denizens include: then-USC Trojans football player Forest Whitaker (debuting), Jennifer Jason Leigh, and a neverbetter Sean Penn as the surfer Jeff Spicolli, brandishing the most perfect Southern California drawl in cinema. Ray Walston is the teacher driven to exasperation by his pranks. Phoebe Cates is memorably sweet in a diving board-set fantasy scene, set to a tune by The Cars. The part where the seductive power of Led Zeppelin is explained is as pungent now as it was then. (Plays Jul 30 and Aug 2 in various valley theaters. FathomEvents.com (RvB)

HIGH FOR THIS We’re freaking out, man! ‘Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets’ might make sense after several tokes... Maybe.

Stoney Baloney TO PARAPHRASE THE immortal Lou Reed, some hash would have helped that Valerian. In Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, writer and director Luc (The Fifth Element) Besson adapts an early 1970s French comic book series. He seems particularly faithful to the grotty sexual politics of the time: Major Valerian (Dane DeHaan, a jaded, grimmer Mark Hamill, with Keanu’s voice) always hits on his sergeant Laureline (model turned actress Cara Delevigne). He proposes marriage during the middle of the action and complains about her navigating the spaceship (women drivers, amiright?). Midway through, a new female character emerges, a shape-shifter named Bubble who morphs into every tart in history in a low-down cabaret, from Halle Berry’s Catwoman to Liza Minnelli’s Sally Bowles. Your kids may not have expected a pole dance in this movie. Bubble intervenes to save Laureline during a fight: “You can’t fight a lady!” No one apprised Besson of the existence of Amazons. It commences on the paradise planet of Mül, peopled with androgynous, elongated hippies who live in a nacreous Club Med of giant shells, hugging and pirouetting. These space Teletubbies worship a sacred lizardpossum that exudes pearls; each shiny orb is packed with awesome force. It’s like the rocket fuel that Nibbler used to poop out on Futurama. As if bidden by a viewer’s inner nasty

little boy uncomfortable with perfect happiness, the skies blow up. And then we’re in the cockpit where Valerian receives a “Help me, Obi Wan Kenobi” message from the planet: “Your cerebral activity is a little more intense than usual” diagnoses Alex, the ship’s Siri. Under orders from the Planetary Interpol, or whatever Valerian and the they’re called, he and City of a Thousand Laureline steal back Planets the pet pearl-pooper from a mall-world, and PG-13, 137 Min. haul it to the “city of a Valleywide thousand planets” where space’s different races live in blurry harmony. The city, Alpha, has a mysterious cancer in its midst, and Valerian must find out what the connection is while Laureline waits on deck; it’s clear the brasshatted military (represented by good guy Jason Flemyng and bad guy Clive Owen) are in on it. Adventures in the Clown Nebula continue, with critters ranging from a Huey, Louie and Dewey trio of greedy elephant-ducks, to a telepathic jellyfish that gives you messages when you stick your head up its ass, to a creature that’s a living stack of vanilla frosted doughnuts— there to stimulate the munchies the properly medicated viewer will experience. Watching this, your cerebral activity may not be as intense as usual. —Richard von Busack

Hang Ten SURF’S UP Slacktone headlines the second annual International Surf Classic at The Ritz this weekend.

Instrumental surf rockers Slacktone shoot the curl at The Ritz BY BILL KOPP

D

AVE WRONSKI spends a lot of time thinking about how to put the “surf” in the instrumental surf rock music he makes with his band, Slacktone—comparing what he does to what Ennio Morricone did with his iconic soundtrack to The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.

“Guys like him wanted to create imagery with music and sounds,” Wronski says. With Slacktone, Wronski takes that same framework and applies it to the world of surfing.

“The sound of Fender reverb, that really big and romantic guitar sound, kind of a mournful tone” is central to the vibe he is going for. Distinguished by its cranked vibrato, lightning-fast tremolo picking, exotic scales and, of course, waves of reverb, instrumental surf rock was originally pioneered by the likes of Dick Dale and his Del-Tones in the early ‘60s. Though the musical style’s heyday was short-lived, it remains an influential and inspiring movement in rock & roll history and continues to inform pop music to this day. Wronski, who leads the forwardlooking yet tradition-honoring Slacktone, recalls how he first fell in love with surf music in the 1960s. “The dad of the kid across the street had a Ventures record,” he says. “I really liked the sound of it. I had

always listened to a lot of different kinds of music, and my dad and uncle were big music enthusiasts, too.” Wronski’s father had a big record collection and, even as a first-grader, young Dave would make his own mixtapes on a reel-to-reel deck. “Then, when the British Invasion hit, I got the idea of bands in my head,” Wronski says. He learned to play guitar and has been playing ever since. “I made my living that way for a long time,” he says. By the early 1980s, Wronski had joined Jon and the Nightriders, a popular “second wave” instrumental surf band. There he first played with drummer Dusty Watson, who today is in Slacktone with Wronski and bassist Sam Bolle. After playing on some studio recordings, Jon and the Nightriders got a gig opening for Malibu’s notorious Surf Punks at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. Wronski knew how mercilessly Surf Punks fans treated opening acts—often spitting on them—but he was prepared. “I said to the other guys, ‘We’re gonna

have to take care of that.’” By that time he and Dusty were seasoned players with experience in punk bands as well. So they decided to alter their approach from the band’s traditional style. “We decided we would play real fast and hard,” Wronski says with a chuckle, “and just shove it down their throats.” The gig was a success, and soon the band took off on a tour. “We were the first instrumental surf band to go to Europe,” Wronski says. The band eventually cut some tracks—covers of surf standards—at famed Gold Star Studios with producer Shel Talmy, the man who first recorded the Who, the Kinks and David Bowie. But since Wronski wasn’t the leader of the band, he had little say in the material chosen to be recorded. Eventually Wronski decided, “Okay, screw it. No covers. And I want to do this the way it should be done, as a three-piece.” He and Watson formed Slacktone, and from that point forward played original music. Slacktone would turn out highly-charged songs true to the surf aesthetic—lots of twang and reverb, a solid, steady backbeat—but with a harder, modern sensibility. Wronski and Slacktone aim to take things a step beyond the original surf groups. “Those guys wanted to create imagery to match the sport of surfing,” he says. Slacktone’s music is designed to do that as well, but also to evoke the spirit of extreme sports like snowboarding, off-road motorcycling, competitive skateboarding and mountain biking. These days, the band often gets booked to play at extreme sporting events. For Slacktone, it’s not about long, showy jams; the songs are concise and built around razor-sharp hooks. “I listen to some pop songs,” Wronski says with a laugh, “and I think to myself, ‘get to the good part!’” His goal is to make sure that nobody who hears a Slacktone song ever says that. Slacktone shares the stage with Kilaueas, the Tomorrowmen, Fascinating Creatures of the Deep and Aloha Screwdriver at KFJC’s second annual International Surf Classic this Sunday.

DAN ZAE MAN ‘Dirtbag’ Dan says battle rap is alive and well in San Jose.

Bring the Battle Back JUST LAST MONTH, Joshua “Mad Illz” Carrasco— founder of the Grind Time rap battle league—decided to sell his once-dominant platform. This report came coupled with the news that Carrasco didn’t have much confidence in the art form and the industry it spawned. “Battle rap is dying,” he said.

Showpieces aside, the lineup is stacked with matchups made specifically to pit styles against one another. One headliner match will feature Los Angeles veteran The Saurus going up against fresh Hollister rapper Reverse Live. Martinez says pitting two emcees from opposite ends of the status spectrum is what will make the battle worth watching.

“Dirtbag” Dan Martinez begs to differ.

“Reverse Live is a rookie and The Saurus is the vet, so this is a shot for someone who hasn't had the opportunity yet, but has shown over and over that he’s ready for it,” Martinez Battle of the Zae explains. BOTZ 8 will also feature two international rappers—LondonJul 28-29, 2pm, $25 based Micky Worthless and Vocab BackBar SoFa, Bahamas who’s from, you guessed it, San Jose the Bahamas.

The veteran battle rapper, hip-hop artist and standup comedian is the founder of his own off-top tournament, Battle of the Zae, which returns for its eighth installment this weekend to prove how wrong Carrasco is. Martinez speaks passionately about BOTZ and the way he aims to move the format forward—by borrowing from professional wrestling. “No other league does an organized royal rumble, where you’ve got six people going against each other,” Martinez says, referring to the circular six-man bout—the “Caddy Royale”—which will serve as the centerpiece of this BOTZ. Martinez goes on to explain how the structure will shake things up and throw the contest wide open: “This way they can decide if they want to spend all their time going off on one person or if they want to try and take five people all at once,” he says. One rapper who will take part in the rumble is Detroit legend Marv Won, who once got to light Eminem up on the set of 8 Mile back in the day.

This BOTZ also holds the distinction of being held in honor of Cadalack Ron, another wellknown battler, who died last year. The one who comes out on top here will walk away with a cool $2,500. Though according to Martinez, most aren’t here for the money. “A lot of these guys are used to getting like five thousand to do one battle,” Martinez says. “They’re here for other reasons.” Many are coming through just to show love for the event, to the other veterans that will be in attendance or just to support the local scene. —Yousif Kassab

ADVICE GODDESS

By AMY ALKON

metroactive.com | sanjose.com | metrosiliconvalley.com | JULY 26-AUGUST 1, 2017

AdviceAmy@AOL.com

A guy friend of 20 years and I once fooled around years ago. Though he has a girlfriend, he keeps throwing sexual remarks into our conversations, sending inappropriate texts, and asking me to send naked photos. I wouldn’t be interested even if he were single, and I’ve been giving subtle hints, like “ha-ha… gotta go,” right after he says something provocative, but it isn’t working. How do I politely get him to stop without ruining a very long friendship?—Upset As a means of communication, hinting to a man is like having a heartfelt conversation with your salad. This isn’t to say men are dumb. They just aren’t emotional cryptographers. Social psychologist Judith A. Hall finds that women are generally far better at spotting and interpreting nonverbal messages (from, say, facial expressions and body language, including that female specialty, the pout). Women tend to use their own ability for decoding unspoken stuff as the standard for what they expect from men. So, for example, the longer a man takes to notice that his girlfriend is pouting (perhaps about what was initially some minor todo) the darker things get—with hate glares and maybe some cabinet-slamming… and then, the grand finale: “Hey, heartless! Time for a monthlong reunion with your first sex partner, a.k.a. your right hand!” There’s also a major sex difference in how males and females speak. A body of research finds that from childhood on, males tend to be direct: “Gimme my truck, butthead!” Females tend to be indirect, couching what they want in hints and polite and even apologetic language: “Um, sorry, but I think that’s my Barbie.” Psychologist Joyce Benenson points out that these conversational sex differences line right up with evolved sex differences in our, uh, job descriptions. Men evolved to be the warrior-protectors of the species.

Women’s mealy-mouthing, on the other hand, dovetails with a need to avoid physical confrontation, which could leave them unable to have children or to care for the ones they’ve already had. However, in women’s self-protectively not quite saying what they mean, they trade off being understood—especially by men. Making matters worse, research by evolutionary psychologists Martie Haselton and David Buss on the “sexual overperception bias” in men suggests that the male mind evolved to be a bit dense to a woman’s signals that she isn’t interested. Basically, men seem evolutionarily predisposed to make errors in judgment in whether to pursue or keep pursuing a woman— erring in whichever way would be least costly to their mating interests. In other words, in giving this guy “subtle hints,” you aren’t being polite; you’re being wildly ineffective. Yank off the marshmallow fluff and tell him: “I need you to kill all the sex talk. Immediately. And yes, this includes requests for naked selfies.” (Be prepared to need to repeat yourself.) If he really is a friend, he’ll continue being one. He might even become a better one—the sort you can call anytime, day or night, from the coldest place on the globe, and he’ll say, “I’ll be there with the sled dogs pronto,” not, “Text me a shot of your boobs before you die of hypothermia!”

I love how my boyfriend smells, but I hate his new cologne. The smell literally makes me queasy. Is it even my place to ask him to stop wearing it? How do I tell him I don’t like it without it being mean?—Plagued Try to focus on the positive: You find him extremely jumpable whenever he isn’t wearing a $185 bottle of what it would smell like if sewage and verbena had a baby. Unfortunately, it seems that his cologne and your immune system are poorly matched. Biologist August Hammerli and his colleagues find that a person’s fragrance preferences correlate with their particular set of infectious intruder-tracking genes. So, in not

liking your boyfriend’s cologne, it isn’t that you think he’s an idiot with bad taste; it’s that your … I dunno, greatgreat-grandma got it on with some hot peasant with the “verbena smells like dead, rotting chickens” gene. The science is your way in: “Sadly, your cologne does not play well with my genes...” Cushion the blow with something sweet, like, “I know you love it, and I wish I loved it, too.”

FREE WILL ASTROLOGY

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): You still have a wound

that never formed a proper scar. (We're speaking metaphorically here.) It's chronically irritated. Never quite right. Always stealing bits of your attention. Would you like to do something to reduce the distracting power of that annoying affliction? The next 25 days will be a favorable time to seek such a miracle. All the forces of nature and spirit will conspire in your behalf if you formulate a clear intention to get the healing you need and deserve.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): In his poem "The

Initiate," Charles Simic speaks of "someone who solved life's riddles in a voice of an ancient Sumerian queen." I hope you're not focused on seeking help and revelations from noble and grandiose sources like that, Gemini. If you are, you may miss the useful cues and clues that come your way via more modest informants. So please be alert for the blessings of the ordinary. As you work on solving your quandaries, give special attention to serendipitous interventions and accidental luck.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): For many years, the Tobe Zoological Park in China housed a "praying panther" named Ato. The large black feline periodically rose up on her hind legs and put her paws together as if petitioning a higher power for blessings. I suggest we make her your spirit ally in the coming weeks. I hope she'll inspire you to get your restless mind out of the way as you seek to quench your primal needs. With the praying panther as your muse, you should be able to summon previously untapped reserves of your animal intelligence and cultivate an instinctual knack for knowing where to find raw, pristine satisfaction. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Do you really have to be

the flashy king or charismatic queen of all you survey? Must all your subjects put on kneepads and prostrate themselves as they bask in your glory? Isn't it enough for you to simply be the master of your own emotions, and the boss of your own time, and the lord of your own destiny? I'm not trying to stifle your ambition or cramp your enthusiasm; I just want to make sure you don't dilute your willpower by trying to wield command over too wide a swath. The most important task, after all, is to manage your own life with panache and ingenuity. But I will concede this: The coming weeks will be a time when you can also probably get away with being extra worshiped and adored.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Dear Hard Worker: Our

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): If extraterrestrial beings

land their space ship on my street and say they want to meet the creatures who best represent our planet, I will volunteer you Libras. Right now, at least, you're nobler than the rest of us, and more sparkly, too. You're dealing smartly with your personal share of the world's suffering, and your day-to-day decisions are based more on love than fear. You're not taking things too personally or too seriously, and you seem better equipped than everyone else to laugh at the craziness that surrounds us. And even if aliens don't appear, I bet you will serve as an inspiring influence for more

human beings than you realize. Does being a role model sound boring? I hope not. if you regard it as an interesting gift, it will empower you to wield more clout than you're used to.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): During the four

years he worked on painting the Sistine Chapel, Michelangelo never took a bath. Was he too preoccupied with his masterpiece? Modern artist Pae White has a different relationship with obsession. To create her fabric art pieces, she has spent years collecting more than 3,500 scarves designed by her favorite scarf-maker. Then there's filmmaker James Cameron, who hired an expert in linguistics to create an entire new language from scratch for the aliens in his movie Avatar. In accordance with the astrological omens, Scorpio, I approve of you summoning this level of devotion— as long as it's not in service to a transitory desire, but rather to a labor of love that has the potential to change your life for the better for a long time.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): "The purpose of art is to lay bare the questions that have been hidden by the answers," wrote author James Baldwin. Even if you're not an artist, I encourage you to make that your purpose in the coming weeks. Definitive answers will at best be irrelevant and at worst useless. Vigorous doubt and inquiry, on the other hand, will be exciting and invigorating. They will mobilize you to rebel against any status quos that have been tempting you to settle for mediocrity. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): You're in a phase of your cycle when the most useful prophecies are more lyrical than logical. So here you go: three enigmatic predictions to help stir up the creative ingenuity you'll need to excel on your upcoming tests. 1. A darling but stale old hope must shrivel and wane so that a spiky, electric new hope can be born. 2. An openness to the potential value of a metaphorical death will be one of your sweetest assets. 3. The best way to cross a border is not to sneak across bearing secrets but to stride across in full glory with nothing to hide.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Aquarian novelist James Joyce had a pessimistic view about intimate connection. Here's what he said: "Love (understood as the desire of good for another) is in fact so unnatural a phenomenon that it can scarcely repeat itself, the soul being unable to become virgin again and not having energy enough to cast itself out again into the ocean of another's soul." My challenge to you, Aquarius—in accordance with the astrological omens—is to prove Joyce wrong. Figure out how to make your soul virgin again so it can cast itself out into the ocean of another's soul. The next eight weeks will be prime time to achieve that glorious feat. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Years after he had

begun his work as a poet, Rainer Maria Rilke confessed that he was still finding out what it took to do his job. "I am learning to see," he wrote. "I don't know why it is, but everything enters me more deeply and doesn't stop where it once used to." Given the current astrological omens, you have a similar opportunity, Pisces: to learn more about how to see. It won't happen like magic. You can't just sit back passively and wait for the universe to accomplish it for you. But if you decide you really would like to be more perceptive—if you resolve to receive and register more of the raw life data that's flowing towards you—you will expand and deepen your ability to see.

Homework: Make a prediction about where you'll be and what you'll be doing on January 1, 2020. Testify at Freewillastrology.com.

ARIES (March 21-April 19): Are you feeling as daring about romance as I suspect? If so, I've composed a provocative note for you to give to anyone you have good reason to believe will be glad to receive it. Feel free to copy it word-for-word or edit it to suit your needs. Here it is: "I want to be your open-hearted explorer. Want to be mine? We can be in foolishly cool drooling devotion to each other's mighty love power. We can be in elegant solid-gold allegiance to each other's genius. Wouldn't it be fun to see how much liberation we can whip up together? We can play off our mutual respect as we banish the fearful shticks in our bags of tricks. We can inspire each other to reach unexpected heights of brazen intelligence."

Gary Singh

Back to Montreal CLOSING TIME Leonard Cohen is buried at an unmarked grave in the Jewish section of Mont-Royal Cemetery.

A visit to Leonard Cohen’s grave in Canada stirs up old memories BY GARY SINGH

T

HE CANADIAN POET and songwriter Leonard Cohen, the romantic sharp-dressed articulator of darkness, is buried in an unmarked grave in his hometown of Montreal, Quebec.

After a career spanning more than half a century, in which his songs, poetry and travels took him to Greece, Cuba, Nashville and a Zen monastery, Leonard finally passed away last November at the age of 82.

He had just released his final album, You Want It Darker, in which he appears to have known he was dying. Leonard and his home turf of Quebec, la belle province, have a long history in my writings for this newspaper, so I had to visit his grave when returning to Montreal last week. The resulting sequence of events was mind-blowing. Leonard is buried alongside his family in the Jewish section at the bottom of Mont-Royal Cemetery, on the hill that gave Montreal its name. The cemetery, on its northwestern side, borders the Outremont neighborhood, a Francophone locale where stately gated mansions along Chemin de la Foret line the bottom

of the hill. Regal trees arch over the streets and wide grassy parking strips. It’s quite comfy. As I skulked into the cemetery, a few maintenance workers were standing there, just inside the gate. Before I said a word, they looked at me and said, “Cohen? He’s right over there.” They pointed a few gravestones over. They knew exactly who I was looking for, without me even asking. In other words, I didn’t have to knock, the gate was open, and the gatekeepers showed me the way. Talk about symbolism. After arriving at the gravesite, I made a pact with Leonard Cohen. I stood there, between the rocks and the flowers, and spoke to him: “Leonard, I will keep writing, you just show me how to pay the bills. Give me a sign. Anything.” Just after I left the cemetery, a warm rain started to fall, as if

SILICON SILICONALLEYS ALLEYS

Mother Nature had deliberately waited until my visit was over. With no umbrella, I then high-tailed it down Boulevard du Mont-Royal and caught a bus on Avenue du Parc back to my hotel. The entire sequence of events brought back memories of previous stories, as this was not the only instance of cosmic serendipity unfurling itself in Quebec. In 2003, I was in Quebec City, drinking in a bar called Jules et Jim, named after the film, and we wound up conversing with all sorts of colorful characters. The scene was basically the Leonard Cohen song “Closing Time,” so I later recalled this crazy night in a 2009 Silicon Alleys column, right as Leonard was going back on tour and performing at the Paramount Theatre in Oakland. Ever since he emerged from the Zen monastery, people hoped he’d someday tour again, and there he was, hitting the road at 75. At the time of the 2009 Oakland show, no one knew Leonard would eventually come to the HP Pavilion in San Jose—now the SAP Center— for what was initially supposed to be the last show of the tour. For that gig, I wrote a cover story for Metro, part of which was me walking around various Montreal locales related to Leonard or his songs. Fans from all over the world came to that gig, since no one knew the tour would get extended and everyone thought that, given Leonard’s age, they would never get to see him again. Israel, Finland, Japan, Russia, Australia, Brazil, Canada and countless other countries were represented in that audience, and many of those people were walking around the arena with a copy of Metro in their hands. At the show, I didn’t tell a soul that I was the one who wrote the story, but the person who ran Leonard’s fan club later emailed me and said he handed a copy to Leonard backstage. That was the closest I ever got to meeting the dude. Nevertheless, I can’t be anything but grateful for the mind-blowing, cyclical passages of interconnectedness that San Jose and Quebec have given me over the years. In that sense, the show must go on. Leonard may no longer be with us in physical form, but his flame still burns. He will give me a sign and I will find a way to pay the bills.
