The Voss DAVID VOSSBRINK, the city of San Jose’s longtime airport and City Hall communications director, ended his four-decade career as public spokesman last week, celebrating the occasion at a mock press conference complete with a microphone-festooned podium and a newsreel-style farewell video from co-workers. Friends and colleagues described the 65-year-old Vossbrink as smart, fair and calm in the face of crisis, an assessment local reporters—always a surly bunch—would actually agree with. NANCI KLEIN, the city’s assistant director of economic development, called Vossbrink “serenity walking” and thanked him for teaching her to “answer the question you want to speak to, not the question you were asked.” (Can’t wait for that next discussion.) Former San Jose Mayor RON GONZALES, who hired Vossbrink from a PR post at the city of Sunnyvale, reminisced about their “interesting times” together, from scandal to milestones. The ex-mayor also noted that Vossbrink often talked him into calling journalists even when he didn’t want to. “David was that blue angel on my shoulder.” Santa Clara County Assessor LARRY STONE said Vossbrink’s honesty makes him an anachronism in “an age of alternative facts,” and lauded him as “one of the most thoughtful and gifted writers” in the communications game.

Vossbrink told Fly he lived by four principles throughout his career: tell the truth, represent what you respect, always return phone calls and never become the story. His wife, AUDREY WONG, affirmed this ethos to scores of people gathered for the June 29 send-off party at Mosaic. “The David that you know is the David that I know,” she said.

Her husband’s wisdom, she added, reflects “the Vossbrink family values” of reading, asking questions and looking things up. Stanford law professor pens book on nation’s triumphant paradox

E ALL KNOW the story of the slim, constitutional lawyer with a Kenyan father. He strides confidently, smiles broadly and is perfectly willing to explain the profound divisions in this country that put Donald Trump in the White House.

This is not that story. Rather, I’m sitting outside an office at Stanford University, waiting to speak with a man who shares a similar path to Barack Obama, law fellow Mugambi Jouet. Much like the previous president, Jouet spent a good deal of

his youth in another country—Obama in Indonesia, Jouet in France—which provided a cultural immersion that deepened and broadened both men’s perspectives on America.

Bald and clean-shaven, Jouet wears a violet-and-white-checked shirt and indigo slacks.

His small, tidy office sits in the basement of the grand Robert Crown Law Library on the Stanford campus.

Jouet began working on his new book, Exceptional America: What Divides Americans From the World and From Each Other, well before Trump’s globestunning election win, which the professor admits he didn’t foresee. But Trump’s victory has amplified the book’s themes and timeliness beyond anything

imaginable had Hillary Clinton taken more than just the popular vote.

Jouett's book painstakingly attempts to answer a question on the minds of people from Pasadena to Pittsburgh to Paris: WTF is happening to America?

“Most people tend to think American exceptionalism means a faith in American superiority, the notion that the country is exceptional in the sense of ‘wonderful’ or ‘outstanding’ or ‘phenomenal,’” Jouet says. “But historically, American exceptionalism has mainly meant something else, which is that America is an exception objectively and descriptively, especially when compared to other Western democracies.”

Jouet’s book examines how the growing dark side of “American exceptionalism” has driven the polarization of U.S. politics, its effect on other parts of the globe and the changing meaning of the phrase.

“It was not before the Obama era that the term was redefined as a political weapon to impugn Obama’s patriotism,” Jouet says. “People began

the rise of a strengthened nativism, nationalism, anti-immigrant sentiment, distrust of institutions, lack of empathy for the poor, disdain for education and the rise of “alternative facts.”

“For example, today America is the only Western democracy to have the death penalty, and the only one to lack a universal health care system,” Jouet says. “These are not inherently good or bad things. It depends on how people think of the death penalty and universal health care.

“What I argue in my book is that the extraordinary polarization of modern America is a dimension of what American exceptionalism has historically meant.

“America is an exception because Americans are clashing over a broad range of issues that are either not controversial or are much less controversial in the modern Western world, such as whether people should have a basic right to modern health care, whether special interests should be allowed to spend unlimited money on political campaigns and on lobbying, whether climate change is a hoax or a scientific reality, whether women should have a right to abortion, whether contraception should be covered by people’s health insurance, whether creationism or evolution should be taught in public schools, whether people should have an unbridled right to bear arms, whether to have the death penalty, whether to have mass incarceration, whether it’s appropriate to introduce torture into Western civilization as a means of fighting terrorism.”

Europe has seen its own nationalist movements in the last year—from Brexit in the United Kingdom to Marine Le Pen’s near victory in the French presidential election—but Jouet notes that even the far-right parties in Western Europe aren’t fighting over a person’s right to health care.

Jouet’s book offers little solace to those uncomfortable with Trump’s vision of America’s return to greatness.

He does, however, offer one positive, albeit tinged in irony.

American social problems “partly have roots in admirable aspects of American society, such as its tradition of religious liberty and egalitarianism, as well as the country’s remarkable demographic diversity,” Jouet says. “But these positive aspects of American exceptionalism can manifest themselves in inspiring, contradictory and selfdestructive ways.”

talking about American exceptionalism at the same time as there was this debate, that still exists today, about the great divide within American society.

But people did not connect the two together as I did in my book, arguing that the great polarization of modern America is a dimension of American exceptionalism in that it’s very peculiar by international standards.”

During Mitt Romney’s run to unseat Obama in 2012, the challenger accused the president of not believing in American exceptionalism, of not considering it “the greatest nation in the world and a force for good.” GOP candidates Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich, as well as Dick Cheney, repeated the rhetoric in what took on the form of a coordinated line of attack.

Their goal, Jouet says, was to challenge Obama’s legitimacy not merely as president but as an American, someone who might even harbor jihadi sympathies. Trump, a vocal force behind the birther movement that dogged Obama, played off the same page in last year’s election by promising to “make America great again.”

That’s a very different take on the original meaning of American exceptionalism.

The term didn’t really come into use at all until American Communist Party leader Jay Lovestone began using it in the 1920s. He used it as an excuse to to explain to Soviet leader Josef Stalin why the “so-called universal laws of Marxism” weren’t taking hold in the United States.

“In fact,” Jouet said in a recent interview, “that did not sit well with Stalin, and this contributed to Lovestone being kicked out of the Communist Party.”

Academics went on to use the term to describe how U.S. history, culture and society make the country so different from other advanced nations—from the legal and political systems to economics, race relations and religious attitudes, Jouet says.

He traces Trump’s rise to the full flowering of Christian fundamentalism, anti-intellectualism, radical antigovernmentalism and racial resentment — themes that were not new but only recently became more prominent.

The more celebrated aspects of this nation’s exceptionalism, adopted by other democracies —freedom of religion, women’s rights and demographic diversity, social welfare—started to be dismantled in the U.S. around the Reagan years, Jouet says. The result is

Highbrow Hip-Hop Pop culture fuses with high art in bid to reinvigorate opera BY NICK VERONIN

A

LEXANDRA SESSLER wheels her electric piano into the guarded room. Security personnel at Santa Clara County Juvenile Hall are skeptical. She notices one of the guards shooting a funny look at her and collaborator Carlos Aguirre. They’ve come to talk to nearly two dozen of the detention facility’s most serious offenders.

About opera.

It’s far from the norm at the San Jose youth detention facility, where visitors usually deliver a scared-straight sermon about needing to shape up.

Aguirre and Sessler visit these young men with a different message. Their aim is to introduce new modes of expression—writing and operatic singing. They’ll do this

using insights into rap, a musical form many of the youth are already familiar with.

The Rap Opera Project is part of an initiative launched by Opera Cultura, a Latino-oriented opera company. Aguirre, a hip-hop emcee and beatboxer, holds down the rap end of the project. Sessler, a professional opera singer, plays the piano and demonstrates how operatic vocal technique can fill a theater without the aid of artificial amplification.

After the teens take part in a

creative writing exercise, Sessler sings their words while Aguirre drops a beat.The sheer volume of Sessler’s singing impresses the kids, and they’re delighted to hear their personal stories turned into a hiphopera on the spot.

By the end of the session, this group of at-risk youth is interested in an art form many consider to be stuffy, antiquated and reserved for big city bluebloods in black ties and gowns.

POOR FOLK The classic ‘La Boheme,’ performed here by Opera San Jose, tells the story of a couple who are ruined by poverty.

Parallel Tracks It’s no surprise that boom-bap beats mix well with an aria, or that innercity kids with records can relate to opera. It’s all musical expression.

From Mozart to Tupac, musicians have made sense of the human condition through their work. And it turns out the world’s most acclaimed rap music shares plenty in common with opera.

Take La Boheme.

“It’s about poverty and death,” says Larry Hancock, general director of Opera San Jose. “It’s about the fact that having no financial resources ruins your life.”

The characters in Giacomo Puccini’s 1896 opera—one of the most popular in the world—live hand-to-mouth in a rundown tenement in 1830s Paris. At one point, the male lead, Rodolfo, a writer, burns one of his manuscripts just to stay warm. Later, his love interest, Mimi, will die of consumption, a disease she might have avoided had she been higher born.

Contrast this with the harrowing tales outlined in rap songs, such as Nas’ 1999 track “New York State of Mind Pt. 2.” He recounts a day in the life in Queensbridge, North America’s largest public housing project: Broken glass in the hallway, bloodstained floors Neighbors, look at every bag you bring through your doors Lock the top lock, Momma shoulda cuffed me to the radiator.

Why not? It might’ve saved later from my block There are other parallels to be drawn.

“A play is all text and it is acting,” says Héctor Armienta, artistic director and general director of Opera Cultura—an Oakland-based company, which does the bulk of its work in the South Bay, due to the large Latino population here. “Then there is musical theater, which gives you big musical numbers, but the songs don’t necessarily connect. With opera, there’s a fourth character.

Going Down While these parallels exist, popular culture seems to be winning out over opera. Public attendance of “benchmark” arts activities—jazz concerts, opera and live theater— dropped by nearly 25 percent from 1982 to 2012, according to a report by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). While other art forms are adapting to new trends in media consumption, opera has lagged.

“Opera participation exclusively via media has the smallest audience of any performing art form studied,” according to the NEA. The 2015 report went on to find that opera “has the smallest participation rate for any performing art form attended live.”

It’d be easy to say opera is a relic that doesn’t interest younger generations as much as Netflix, video games or even live hip-hop shows.

But Hancock believes it’s more complicated than that.

One theory is that it’s getting more expensive to go to the opera, as it takes more and more money to pay musicians and singers at a competitive rate.

“The average opera-goer’s salary hasn’t kept up with ticket prices,” Hancock says.

Joseph Frank, a San Jose State University music professor and professional opera singer with more than 40 years experience, suspects the industry’s financial woes can be traced to a lack of public music education.

This, in turn, leads to a lack of understanding of the genre, impacting ticket sales, subscriptions and endowments.

“When push comes to shove, the first thing that goes out the door is

Back in the ’70s, when he was finishing up his degree in opera at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, Frank was part of an inner-city outreach program, which brought opera into underserved schools. Similar to The Rap Opera Project, Frank’s program was called “Who’s Afraid of Opera?”

Kids weren’t so much averse to the genre, he says, as they were unaware of it. Frank recalls observing the same thing Sessler saw in the teens at juvenile hall.

“I would start singing and their eyes would light up,” he says. “They don’t realize that all that sound can come from a single human voice.”

Aguirre agrees. He attributes any preconceived—and incorrect— notions about opera to ignorance.

“We don’t need to put it so far away—like opera is this thing that

no one can really do,” he says. “It’s more accessible than people think.”

Still, the demise of opera is a concern for opera professionals—and not just because it’s their livelihood.

“If it were to die on my watch, it would be a very disturbing thing to me,” says Hancock, of the prospect of Opera San Jose going under.

The People’s Opera “The days of black ties and tails” are largely in the past, Frank says, noting that the only place one is likely to encounter that kind of “stuffed shirt quality” are at opening nights of the San Francisco Opera or The Met. “It’s become much more relaxed.”

It’s not uncommon for opera patrons to show up in jeans and sneakers—especially in Silicon Valley.

It’s more important, Frank says, to remind people that composers have been creating operas for popular

audiences for centuries. “The Magic Flute was written for the common people,” he says.

Since Mozart’s time, opera has evolved with the zeitgeist and adopted new technologies. The practice of projecting supertitle translations of lyrics has been common since the 1980s, Frank says.

“That was introduced to dismiss the stigma of ‘Oh, they’re speaking another language and I don’t understand it.’”

For Hancock, the conventions and social etiquette surrounding opera have never been as important as the art itself. “Subject matter counts,” he says, explaining that “universal” themes are what draw people to all great art. Aguirre and Sessler can get with that.

Reflecting on The Rap Opera Project, Aguirre says his aim has never been to save opera in its current form. “I don’t think that

Of course, opera is famous for its death scenes. They can make a melodramatic Hollywood demise seem downright realistic by comparison. But it’s Hancock’s analysis of why these episodes touch us that seems apropos.

When an audience weeps for the death of an operatic character, they aren’t bemoaning the life lost, Hancock says. Rather, they’re empathizing with the pain of the characters who must carry on.

Hancock is unsure whether efforts like the Rap Opera Project—or even its wildly successful Broadway counterpart, Hamilton—will ultimately help reinvigorate foundering ticket sales or draw new blood to the genre.

But as with all great works of art, an uncertain ending is neither good nor bad.

“There’s no way to know if this is happy or not,“ he says. “It’s too soon.”

In other words, the fat lady has yet to sing.

Brown adds that he doesn’t want to limit the way he thinks about music. “Knowledge is power,” he says.

“Culture is a way to get that.”

‘Detritus’ collects the debris left behind by the artistic process

E

ARLIER THIS YEAR, Hillary Clinton commissioned a floral sculpture from the artist Libby Black—purple tulips in a vase made out of paper and hot glue. In what looks like a selfie, Clinton poses with the flowers behind her on a desk.

It’s the most melancholy work on display in Detritus, an exhibit at the San Jose Institute of Contemporary

Art. The show is dedicated to the artistic process and what’s left behind on the studio floor after the art is done.

In Clinton’s case, it’s not that the flowers have the appearance of a sad bouquet. It’s that they look like an inadequate consolation prize for what she, and a majority of the American electorate, recently lost. Their inverse, a ghostly white prototype, sits on a shelf in front of the photograph. Coupling Clinton’s image with the original model lends an emotional punch to something as innocuous as white paper and glue.

The bulk of the exhibit is cleverly, and beautifully, arranged—

and I mean this in the most nonpejorative way—garbage. There are colored pencil shavings, fabric threads and cracked eggshells stacked up in tall glass cylinders and mason jars. Emptied spray paint cans are lined up in the shape of an arrowhead. Busy blotting canvases are dotted and blurred with pinks, blues and grays like so many Jackson Pollocks.

The curators, Kevin B. Chen, Lisa Ellsworth and Lordy Rodriguez, have made a convincing case that there is no such thing as garbage. As artists themselves, they have designed a compelling, cohesive display of waste products. If you’re an artist who's curious about other people's processes, or simply curious about the practical building blocks that go into a sculpture or painting, Detritus yields a multitude of props and tools along with shelves and shelves

of minutiae all rendered dull or unusable through repeated use.

Most intriguing, though, are the failures and experiments. Jamil Hellu and Darrin Martin contributed two test prints from a video and photo series called “Subjects Unknown.”

There are two framed photographs of what could be two gay men. In both pictures, they sit close together.

In the first, they're at the bottom of a long stone stairway, and then, in the second, on grass in a park. The men are unidentifiable because their faces are smudged with black ink. But in the final series, the collaboration between Hellu and Martin (also life partners) reveals their faces to the viewer.

The series is an exploration of male portraiture as well as a compelling selfportrait of the couple themselves.

Tanja Geis affixed a black rubber glove and sock to the wall. The only information given is that they belong to a collagraph print series.

Out of context, they appear to be totemic items retrieved from some lost tribe of collage artists. Whitney Lynn shredded what must have been a great deal of money, only to turn it into a tattered globe that's sagging on top of a pedestal. But knowing its history adds to the meaning of the piece. Originally, it was on stage in Lynn’s performance piece Searching for Diogenes.

Searching for meaning at Detritus, though, is probably beside the point.

One artist contributed a tower of sketch notebooks. No sign indicated whether they were off limits to thumb through. In that sense, there’s a great deal of curation devoted to surfaces. Mostly the exhibit works as an introduction to not only the abstract idea of artists and their varied approaches to creation, but also to the working lives and oeuvres of over 100 artists themselves.

Detritus documents an artist’s mind in process, the thinking that shapes and devises a work of art, including the false starts. The space between inspiration and execution, what’s left on the final canvas, that, however, still remains a mystery.

Local Girl Goes Broadway SOMETHING OFTEN overlooked about The Book of Mormon—better known for its irreverence and controversy—is the musical’s sense of affirmation.

Perhaps no character embodies that spirit more than Nabulungi.

“She’s a young, inspired, innocent girl, the light of the play, the inspiration to all the people in her village,” says Myha’La Herrold, a Willow Glen native who assumes the role in her Broadway debut for the show’s return to the South Bay this month. “She’s this picture of pureness and hope.”

The 21-year-old Carnegie Mellon University theater major first saw the production in Pittsburgh, Penn., when Tony Award-winner and fellow Carnegie Mellon alumna Deneé Benton played the part. “I was in love,” Herrold says. “Nabulungi The Book of Mormon is sort of the quintessential ingénue, which was exciting for me because I had never seen an Jul 11-23, 7:30pm $48+ ingénue who looks like me, which I think shows San Jose Center for the that the world of theater is evolving.”

Performing Arts Not long after watching Benton’s performance, Herrold auditioned for the role, which led to her Broadway debut and brings her home for the musical’s local run.

Penned by South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, The Book of Mormon follows the misadventures of mismatched missionaries sent halfway around the world to spread the gospel. Though praised for its iconoclasm, the musical is classic Broadway through and through, Herrold says. “It’s one of those things where you hear a ‘Ding!’ and somebody bursts into song with jazz hands,” she says. “It’s a new, very satirical story about people who go off to change the world, and the world ends up changing them, but classical musical theater style-wise.”

While some of her cast-mates spent months learning the show, Herrold’s rehearsal has been a crash course. “The entire process has been a matter of weeks,” she says. “I learned the show in New York over about four days, then flew out to L.A. and trailed the girl who’s doing my character. It’s intense.”

But she says it helps that she’ll feel at home in Silicon Valley, where she kicked off her singing and acting career at the age of 6 with the Children’s Musical Theater of San Jose.

“I am so excited to come home, I cannot wait,” Herrold says.

Spider-Man: Homecoming starts off similar: Toomes (Michael Keaton) is the head of a team cleaning up after the cataclysm in The Avengers (2012) after a Chitauri armada emerged from a wormhole over Manhattan

While he toils in a bomb crater full of alien junk, in comes the

damn government, with the new “Department of Damage Control” taking him off the job.

Toomes is a sympathetic portrait of the Trump voter type, driven nuts by regulations. He becomes a flying supervillain with the aid of the technology he kept. A winged terror of turbo fans and razor sharp wings, it looks like an industrial accident waiting to happen. It’s fast and it’s quiet, and it can scoop Spider-Man up, like a mouse rapt by a hawk. Funny, Toomes stays a foreman, even after he turns criminal. He’s a small-time arms dealer. He’s not watching the world burn—this movie has a body count of one. Keaton brings in a melancholy power and dignity to this vision of a salt-of-the-earth man

unenthusiastically working himself up to murder.

Our 15-ish hero (Tom Holland) thought that he’d been tapped for the Avengers, but now it’s the familiar don’t call us, we’ll call you. Before he absented himself, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) gave Parker a hightech spider-suit Peter doesn’t quite understand. Misuse of this suit leaves Parker in the position of a kid who just ran his dad’s car into a tree.

His high-school life is modeled after Freaks and Geeks and The Big Bang Theory; Parker is a reject, befriended by Ned (Jacob Batalon, a live-action version of the kid from Up, giving us a masters class in the art of sidekicking). While trying to round up Toomes’ blasters that can carve buildings, Peter is crushed on by a ravishing classmate (Laura Harrier). Somehow his spider-senses fail to notice the rude but sharp bookworm Michelle (the one-named Zendaya). Even those allergic to whip-smartness may be delighted by

Michelle’s stances. On a D.C. field trip, she refuses to enter the Washington Monument because it was built by slaves. The guide shrugs—she’s right.

In director Jon Watts’ hands, SpiderMan: Homecoming is a true comedy.

There may be better Spider-Man movies, but there’s never been a funnier one, one that avoids the origin story and poor old Uncle Ben. Holland is a delight—an eager, likable stripling. For him, it’s not just the problems of trying to date while a giant metal vulture is menacing the city, but also a Harold Lloyd-worthy escape from the suburbs, hopping through golf-course sprinklers and caroming off garden sheds because there’s nothing to swing from. He finishes his night with a Nantucket sleigh-ride off the back of a van.

Caucasians who moaned about the racial changes in the casting got doubled-down on by Watts and the six credited writers. Here’s a polyglot, multicolored Queens, scored to the Ramones. Spider-Man still poses in a three-point footballer’s crouch in front of Old Glory, but this time she’s not on a Manhattan tower, but atop a bodega-lined block. Those who feel New York today is just the latest of the world’s bleached coral reefs may be cheered. If it’s more frictionless than the way it works in real life, surely this is how NYC is supposed to be.

The IMAX height-ordeals keep getting more harrowing: a rescue at the top of the Washington Monument is a stomach-plummeter; you can’t look, clenched with the old childhood feeling: how the hell is he going to get out of this one? The two other climaxes are a fantastic runaway-plane fight, and the rescue of a Staten Island ferryboat, split lengthwise by alien blasters.

The boat’s name is “Spirit of America”—too much? Maybe it’s only our shared symbols that are holding us together these days, and our hero binds the left and the right halves— excuse me, the port and starboard halves—of this ship of state. Fills you with simplistic political feelings worthy of Peggy Noonan, it does: bring us together again, Spider-Man!

It’s the -nth version of Bergman’s Wild Strawberries, complete with awards ceremony and dream sequences, but the star Sam Elliott gives a sterling example of reluctant fortitude. He’s Lee Hayden, a minor Western-movie actor in his residual years. Just as he turns 71, he learns he has a perhaps terminal case of pancreatic cancer. Over the course of a long weekend and its aftermath, he goes to meet his public while high on MDMA, courts a much younger lady Charlotte (the exotic Laura Prepon, of Orange is the New Black) and tries to mend fences with his bitter daughter (Krysten Ritter). Director Brett Haley (I’ll See You In My Dreams) hasn’t made the kind of movie you’ve never seen before. But Elliott does get more to do than just show off that dandy mustache, which accentuates the corners of that disarming cowpoke grin (as seen in The Big Lebowski); it gives him a chance to use that reassuring buttery voice for romantic comedy, as when he sweettalks Charlotte: “If you were twenty years older, I’d kiss you.” He’s pretty irresistible. Nick Offerman provides sturdy supporting work as Lee’s movie loving pal; Prepon’s readings of a pair of Edna St. Vincent Millay poems are surprisingly touching. (RvB)

Jul 6: The Music of Strangers: Yo-Yo Ma & The Silk Road Ensemble guest star Haruka Fujii, a percussionist from the group. Jul 7: a night of shorts: “Teen Press,” about a pair of Santa Barbara teachers organizing their students into an independent journalism team; “DeKalb Elementary” by Reed van Dyk is a knock-out short about a mentally impaired shooter (Bo Mitchell from Eastbound and Down) and the elementary school receptionist (Tarra Riggs, of The Help) who talks him out of his rampage. The acting is excellent— Mitchell has the true vacant gaze of those figures who haunt our nightmares, and Riggs underplays the reactions of a brave woman whose good Christian qualities help her in this lethal situation.

It’s based on a real-life 911 call taken in Atlanta. “Soar” is an award-winning short animated piece by Alyce Tzue, and “Nocturne in Black” concerns a heroic musician’s defiance to ISIS, who have banned all secular music. Revivals MAN ON THE FLYING TRAPEZE

(1935) One wonders if the Fieldsians are all gone, if the swag-bellied, big-nosed comedian with his rarified vocabulary and his hundred strategies would amuse viewers too young to get the references…

Would it be enough to say to younger viewers, “You like Bill Murray? Meet his master.” The movie answers the question of whether a man can be so funny that he can be funny just folding his socks. The film, featuring some pratfalls but no actual man on the flying trapeze, doesn’t feature W.C. Fields as he would be in five years. He isn’t yet the self-declared ‘Great Man’ with a top hat and a hydrangea-sized boutonniere in his lapel, that figment you still see on the walls of very old taverns and pool halls. This is Fields in an almost existentialist parody of the householder’s life, with director Clyde Bruckner giving his star negative space to rival Jim Jarmusch. The only thing good in Ambrose Wolfinger’s life is his daughter, the aptly named Hope (Mary Brian); he has a hulking, lazy stepson (Grady Sutton), a vinegar-blooded mother in law, and a scolding wife. “She’s pretty nice about some things, but other things she’s not so nice about,” is how Wolfinger understates the situation.

His rebellion consists of getting a drink on the side and cutting work to see the epochal wrestling match between Meshobbab and Tossoff (Tor Johnson); it’s commentary on L.A. as a hicktown in the early 1930s, when wrestling would be such a big deal that everything stopped for it.

To get the time off, Wolfinger tells a little lie about his mother in law dying from bootleg alcohol: “Oh well, I suppose death is inevitable,” his boss commiserates. But the lady is alive, sworn to temperance, and unappreciative of the wreaths and bouquets sent to honor her passing.

Fields here is a cornered, bemused, slow-speed version of Rodney Dangerfield, only with more minimal reactions: a favorite is a scene of him crunching on what sounds like a piece of toast made from fiberglass while listening straightfaced to a bizarre Gertrude Stein parody being read aloud from the newspaper. In a small part: Walter Brennan as the burglar who plunders Wolfinger’s barrel of “Jersey lightning.” (Plays Jul 5-6 in Palo Alto at the Stanford Theatre.) (RvB)

BABYFACE The car caper ‘Baby Driver’ plays like ‘La La Land’ meets ‘Bullet.’

The Getaway Ballet A MUSICAL MORE than a rubber-burner, Baby Driver is the La La Land of caper films, derivative and occasionally fun—take that as praise if you loved La La Land. Writer and director Edgar Wright, of the “Pub Trilogy” (Shawn of the Dead, Hot Fuzz!, End of the World) is clearly angling for the American market, with its views of ’50s diners, big old Cadillacs, open roads and nostalgia tunes. Compared to his earlier work, Baby Driver is twice the tropes and half the jokes.

Kevin Spacey is Doc, a criminal mastermind in Atlanta. His lucky charm is an eccentric wheelman who calls himself Baby (Ansel Elgort, made up with small but interesting Miles Teller-style scars on his kissable baby face). When Baby speaks—he doesn’t often—the voice is buttery like the shy Elvis, and the plush lips look like The King’s; he’s the kind of gentleman who calls the lady whose car he just jacked “ma’m.” He plugs his ears with headphones, to choreograph his getaways with music.

Having retired from crime, he’s courting Debora (Lily James) a gold hearted waitress. But just when Baby is trying to get out, the man pulls him back in.

And despite his insistence on clockwork precision, and new crews for every heist,

Doc keeps hiring a psycho called Bats (Jamie Foxx). The thug’s rage turns all the fun and games into something where people get hurt.

Jon Hamm, wearing Bogart’s haircut from High Sierra, gets his first really fine movie part as the gunman Buddy—he has a Honey Bunny and Pumpkin thing going on with his moll “Darling” Baby Driver (Eiza Gonzalez). “Hocus Pocus” by Focus and “Neat R, 113 Mins.

Wright’s rhythm and talent shows when he’s following Baby carrying a tray of coffees through downtown, a kind of dance. Spacey seems ready to burst into song as he patters out the details of a holdup. The writing goes rococo—a gun merchant called “The Butcher” (Paul Williams) promises “the best prices in Christendom.”

Baby Driver is an exercise in style and it goes mawkish at times. Maybe Breathless, too, could be dismissed as an exercise in style, but at least Godard doesn’t seem like something that’s sometimes malignly influenced by Guy Ritchie.

Starover Blue return to San Jose with homecoming show at Art Boutiki

S

TAROVER BLUE KNOW music isn’t going to get bottles popping in the club, and that’s fine with them. The dreamy synth pop band got started in San Jose back in 2007, when singer and guitarist Kendall Salley met keyboardist Dirk Molitz at SJSU. At the time, Kendall was studying opera and Dirk classical piano composition, both of which can be heard in the band’s sound.

“It’s not like fun party music,” Salley says over the phone. “You have

to be in the right mental space to want to get into that specific vibe with us. But making that difference with one person where you connect with them emotionally… if we can make one person feel something, then I think we’ve done our job.”

The band’s last release, 2016’s Spacegeist, is a darkly beautiful album that opens with “Lights of Tomorrow”—a meditative synth piece, which shows off Dirk’s classical training while setting the tone for the songs to come. The title track, one of the band’s strongest, is full of haunting melodies and cascading synth lines, and lands somewhere between Beach House and Julia Holter. In fact, Beach House is a somewhat consistent point of reference for the band, but at times

the album recalls Julee Cruise, the frequent David Lynch collaborator (and one of the first performers at the Bang Bang Bar), with Salley’s ethereal vocals floating over a wash of synths and guitars.

Salley describes the concept album as “sci-fi” and “dystopian” “A lot of focus on technology and people’s relationship with that and how it can really destroy things, and what that looks like for our future,” she adds, thinking back on the record.

“I think that’s obviously a product of living in Silicon Valley for so long,” Shortly after the album came out, Starover Blue found themselves on the receiving end of technology’s negative side. After calling San Jose home for almost a decade, Kendall and Dirk had to pick up stakes and move, cleaving the band in half as the rest of the original group stayed behind. Before leaving, the band posted a Dear John letter on their website, explaining the thought process.

“Why are we leaving San Jose?”

the post asked. “Any band member who lives in San Jose already knows the answer. The grotesque rent. The lack of mid-sized indie venues and opportunities to support mid-level nationally touring bands. The tech culture that ensures art and music are perpetual side-notes. We couldn’t break through it.”

Though they (rightly) pointed out the lack of available venues in San Jose in their breakup letter, the band still has an abiding love for Art Boutiki, the venue and comic shop run by indie publisher SLG. “Art Boutiki is one of my favorite venues of all time,” Kendall effuses.

The problem, she sees, isn’t so much with what venues we do have, but those we don’t. “We have these two friggin fantastic places—Café Stritch and Art Boutiki—but once you’ve played those clubs, there wasn’t like a mid-sized club above that as a local band to have a chance to open up for a nationally touring indie act coming through.”

Now located in Portland, the band has carried on in the notably more music-friendly city, picking up a new drummer and bassist in their adoptive home. Rather than getting another guitarist, the band opted to rearrange their songs to be played as a four piece and have since been writing with the new members in mind.

“We reduced,” Kendall says. “We essentially took the fifth member’s parts and incorporated them into our own.”

This new version of the band comes to Art Boutiki this Saturday to play their first San Jose show in months. They come down the coast on a short tour with synthpop group Headwaves, who are playing San Jose for their first time.

The Seattle band also places heavy emphasis on synths, but the music skews more towards MGMT and Foster the People than ambient soundscapes, favoring pop hooks and danceable choruses over atmospherics. San Jose up-andcomers Lafayette and Chilindrina round out the bill.

“Let Me Watch,” MF DOOM’s greatest bout of storytelling across his entire career succeeds because the events are fleshed out by Apani B breaking it off with him and telling her side of things. And Lauryn Hill doubled as the Fugees’ resident crooner while also proving she could rap circles around either of her groupmates.

Gavlyn L.A. rapper Gavlyn isn’t concerned with finding a place for a female emcee in today’s rap landscape. Despite a Jul 12, 9pm, $10 sound that recalls East Coast lady rappers, which rose to BackBar SoFa, prominence near the end of rap’s golden age in the late San Jose ’90s, she’s proven she won’t be boxed in by it.

The way Joey Bada$$ reconstructed the sound of an era in rap he didn’t live through with his breakout project 1999, Gavlyn adapts some of the tropes from hip-hop’s prime, while creating a niche that might not have existed without her.

Listening through Gavlyn’s catalog from the past five years reveals her trajectory as an artist.

Her 2013 single “Guilty Pleasure” is a perfect example of her early aesthetic, where songs double as time capsules.

Pressing play launches a haze of chopped up trumpets that seem to hang in the air above the verse and a boom-bap beat that runs deep underneath.

My boyfriend of three years cheated on me, and when I found out, he dumped me. I’m getting over it, but boy, it’s a slow process. Some days, I’m fine, and others, I feel super sad or really angry. Is there some way I can speed up my recovery so I can get on with my life?—Wasted Enough Time You wish him all the best, which is to say you hope a giant scorpion crawls out of the sand and bites his penis.

It’s understandable that you’re feeling overdue for a little emotional fumigation. But consider that there’s an upside to the downer emotions—and not just for the dry cleaner who’s about to buy Crete after getting the mascara stains out of all your clothes.

Though we tend to see our gloomier emotions, like sadness and anger, as “bad” and the “whoopee!” emotions, like joy and happiness, as “good,” evolutionary psychologist and psychiatrist Randolph Nesse explains that emotions are neither good nor bad; they’re “adaptive.” They’re basically office managers for our behavior, directing us to hop on opportunities and avoid threats through how good or crappy particular things make us feel. As Nesse puts it, “People repeat actions that made them feel happy in the past, and they avoid actions that made them sad.”

Nesse believes that sadness may, among other things, be evolution’s version of a timeout. Note that a term psych researchers use to describe sadness is “low mood” (though it would more helpfully be called “low-energy mood”).

Sadness, like depression, slows you down.

You repair to your couch to boohoo, lick your wounds, and seek comfort from the two men so many women turn to in times of despair:Ben & Jerry.

And yes, there’s value in this sort of ice cream-fueled Kleenexapalooza.

Being sad is telling you “don’t do that again!” while giving you the time and emotional space to figure out what exactly you’re supposed to not do.

Because your emotions have a job to do, you can’t just tell sadness and anger, “You’re no longer wanted here. Kindly show yourselves out.” They’ll go when you show them that they’re no longer needed, which you do by reprocessing your painful experience into something useful. Unfortunately, there are some challenges to this, because when you’re upset, your emotions and all the things you’re emotional about become a big tornado of stuff whirling around in your mind Wizard of Oz-style.

But what do we humans understand really well? Stories. And it turns out, studies on coping with breakups by communications researcher Jody Koenig Kellas find that creating a story about the relationship and the breakup seems to help people adjust better and faster. Essential elements in this seem to be relating your complete story in a “sequential” way (in order), having a narrative that hangs together and makes sense, and illustrating it with examples of things that happened and giving possible reasons for them.

The need to mentally organize what happened into a detailed and coherent story pushes you to reflect on and make sense of your experience in ways that less directed thinking does not.

What seems especially important for moving on is making meaning out of the situation, or turning the ordeal into a learning experience that gives you hope for living more wisely (and less painfully) in the future.

Kellas’ results dovetail with decades of research by psychologist James Pennebaker, who finds that “expressive writing” (similar to what Kellas recommends) speeds people’s recovery from emotional trauma.

But say you hate to write. Research by social psychologist Sonja Lyubomirsky finds that recording your story—say, with the voice memo app on your phone—also works. You could also just tell the story to a friend or a homeless guy at a bus stop.

(Give him a few bucks for lending an ear.)

Finally, consider the difference between healthy storytelling, used to find meaning in what you went through so you can move on, and unhealthy “rumination,” such as obsessively chewing and rechewing bits from your relationship without insight, solutions or relief. Psychologist Susan Nolen-Hoeksema finds that this builds “a case for hopelessness,” prolonging distress and recovery.

A powerful way to deconstruct a case for hopelessness is recognizing that you have some control over what happens to you. You get to this sense through accountability and admitting that you have some responsibility for your present situation—perhaps by ignoring red flags and letting wishful thinking run the show.

S WE TRAVERSE the landscape of 1440 Multiversity in Scott’s Valley, Scott Kriens of Juniper Networks talks about 800,000 pounds of Sierra granite boulders that his team gathered to build a creek bed. Along the way, he points out Indonesian teakwood chairs, custom hand-fabricated steel railings, and wooden ceiling beams airblasted with walnut shells.

Built on a 75-acre spread formerly occupied by the abandoned Bethany Christian College, 1440 is a new learning destination, a place where

numerous high-profile teachers are just now starting to book classes. People from all over the world show up to reevaluate their inner mechanisms.

Named after the exact number of minutes in a day, 1440 Multiversity is already open, but construction is still unfolding as Kriens takes me around the campus. We see yoga studios, redwood lodges, meeting and spa facilities, a lucrative organic kitchen and black limestone stairways. 1440 is a wellness center, an immersion learning destination, a cooking school, an integrative healing retreat, a hiking getaway, and a corporate meeting facility for groups who value contemplative traditions. The first shovel hit the ground summer 2014.

The entire campus, Kriens says, is the logical expansion of the work he and his wife started with the 1440

Foundation, an effort to support “compassionate communities leading generative lives” to better their relationships with themselves and others, or in other words, help people contribute to the world by creating more energy than they consume.

“Joanie and I started the foundation in 2010, not yet with any plan for all of this, but really around a belief that we still share, which is that there’s a whole world of growth and learning to be developed inside of ourselves,” he tells me. “In some ways it’s kinda the new frontier all over again.”

Some of the buildings on the campus retain elements of the abandoned Bethany campus, while other structures have been totally rebuilt. The administration building and check-in area, for example, was formerly a drab 1950s-era concrete structure. It’s been taken apart and repurposed as a craftsman style building to now look like a Rocky Mountain ski lodge. Elements of Canadian cedar, stone, slate and copper give the interior an earthy vibe. Some of the wooden beams

came from Melvin Belli’s old Nob Hill mansion in San Francisco.

Kriens solicited numerous collaborators in the process of constructing every single component, straight down to 40-million-year-old fossils engrained in the stone masonry work, all of which was done entirely by hand, piece after piece. As we continue to trip around the property, a minute doesn’t go by without him pointing out similar levels of detail at every single structure.

“To be consistent, that means building with a real staff also,” Kriens says.

In another mind-blowing scenario, a building now called the Sanctuary was the original main chapel at Bethany University. The front portion of the building, formerly the choir riser, is now a retail space filled with yoga supplies, books, jewelry and gifts. Kriens points to a table made from 1,200-year-old redwood, plus chic rubber flooring and hanging lamps made from repurposed PA system horns that the church used 50 years ago. The rest of the building, formerly the main church area, is now repurposed as a studio for yoga classes, meditation, movement therapy, trauma desensitization exercises and a variety of introspective healing practices. The property goes on and on.

A teaching kitchen will feature classes, alternative food instruction and 12 stations where students can work hand-to-hand with chefs. A hi-tech lecture hall already provides hi-quality audio and video recordings for every teacher who presents here.

The legendary Buddhist teacher Jack Kornfield recently taught a class of 300 people from 17 different countries.

The list of future faculty reads like an international who’s who of mindfulness, self-discovery, nutrition, growth psychology and healing arts disciplines.

“What we’re out to do is to create this learning destination that invites people to both rest and recharge, but also maybe integrate some things about ourselves,” Kriens says. “Not just the physical self or the intellectual self— that’s what we all got taught in school— but the emotional, relational self.”

From that integration, he adds, we become “a little bit more whole, and then take that out, and share it with those that matter most in our lives.”

HUCK AND LISA Webb want to bring the “Aloha Spirit” to Cupertino. Never an easy feat. But for those unfamiliar with the highly touted Hawaiian fastcasual dining chain, which got its start in Maui, Coconut’s Fish Cafe is one of those rare restaurants that receive rave reviews from tourists and islanders alike.

The interior décor of Coconut’s instantly welcomes guests with islandtheme bamboo accents, custom surf board tables and TVs showing island scenes while Hawaiian music plays gently in the background. The restaurant also strives to keep our oceans healthy, and Lisa assured me that all their fish are sustainably sourced, line-caught and flown in daily.

For starters, the Coconut Shrimp ($9.99) sounded like a winner.

All of us also decided to order up Coconut’s famous grilled Fish Tacos ($11.99), which Zagat has dubbed the “perfect taco.” A nice on-tap craft beer selection includes Maui Brewing Co. The Coconut Porter ($6.49) sounded enticing.

The shrimp came out fried hot and fresh, and the Thai chili-pineapple sauce served up a terrific blend of sweet and heat. The fish tacos come out only two to an order, but they’re stacked to the max with 17 ingredients in seven layers. A helpful employee suggested we eat them with a fork—or chopsticks—to dissect them and get a taste of all the fresh ingredients. It also helped to stop us from making a complete mess.

The first entree I tried was the combo Mahi Mahi and Ono (a.k.a.

Wahoo). It was firm, fresh and juicy, and combined well with the coconut milk coleslaw and fresh mango chunks. Once I’d picked the taco down to a manageable size, I went in for an all-encompassing chomp. As all the ingredients crossed my palate, my taste buds hula danced. It’s hard to believe something so delicious can be semi-healthy.

As for the porter, the brew was bold, smooth and had a toasted coconut finish that paired splendidly with the tacos and shrimp.

“Aloha” has two popular meanings: hello and goodbye. Authentic as the Moon

HE NOSE STARTS to run and the tongue begins to burn, but the senses demand more. More beans, more corn and more chile. These are the holy trinity, says Jo Lerma-Lopez, owner and chef of Luna Mexican Kitchen, the newest restaurant on The Alameda in San Jose.

Lerma-Lopez and her husband have put a lot of time into the 50-yearold building. The space is now equipped with two indoor seating rooms and an outdoor patio with heaters. As the owner and chef, Jo makes sure everything is authentic.

“We wanted real Mexican food, with everything made from scratch,” Lerma-Lopez says. “We are paying respect to the history of Mexican food.”

The restaurant emphasizes communal style dining, and the menu features parrilladas, or mixed grilled meats. The family entree is served in a giant, steaming pot to share with three different meat options: carnitas, steak fajita, or adobo chicken breast. Portions come in a quarter-pound ($16), half-pound ($26) or full pound ($39). This dish, along with several others, also has a vegetarian option.

Whether a guest enjoys a parrilla or a signature margarita, the idea is to encourage feasting together. “We are under one moon,” Lerma-Lopez says. “The more we are different, the more we are the same.”

That being said, the only spirit on hand is tequila. Shelves behind the bar are stacked with two levels of quality. So far, the Paloma ($13) has been a hit with its refreshing grapefruit juice. Guest are drawn to the beautiful, custom-made terracotta clay pots the beverages are served in.

We started with the bacon-wrapped camarones ($12), and the prawns were juicy, sweet and smokey. This was followed by the Queso Flamedo ($9.50), an appetizer served in a miniature hot cast-iron skillet. House-made corn tortillas are served with or within almost every dish. The corn undergoes nixtamalization, a process of soaking the kernels before they are hand-ground into masa. Although portions are a bit on the small side, each dish is hearty.

The appetizers, partnered with signature corn tortillas, came out sizzling hot. The top layer of the Queso Flameado is a mixture of cheeses, with chorizo simmering underneath. While it’s not too spicy, it could pose a challenge for those with sensitive palates.

The Mole Poblano Enchiladas ($14) had an enticing aroma of cinnamon and chocolate, and the side featured green cilantro rice and lightly salted pinto beans.
