Goodbye, Mr. Ed? On Wednesday the county Board of Education will, again, discuss Superintendent JON GUNDRY’s job security.

Lawsuits filed by his ex-employees will likely be top of mind. Last week, Fly picked through the lawsuit filed by former chief business officer MICAELA OCHOA. In sworn declarations, former staffers shared accounts of those annoying boss things, like racism, paranoia and harassment. We decided to take another look at Gundry’s own deposition, and it appears the head of the county Office of Education (COE), which oversees the South Bay’s 31 school districts, gave conflicting accounts about flouting the Public Records Act—under oath. Two years ago, Metro wrote some stories about secret consulting contracts the superintendent had signed, or was attempting to sign, without bothering to inform his publicly elected board. In one case, Gundry hired consultant MARK SKVARNA and didn’t think it was really necessary to require written documentation of work performed by Skvarna, who incurred $20,000 in travel expenses. Apparently, Gundry preferred to work with a guy who doesn’t write anything, whether it be email or text, even when communicating with the IRS, CalPERS and CalSTRS. But when Ochoa’s attorney, SONYA MEHTA, asked Gundry about documents that the COE failed to release, as well as how decisions were made, the superintendent said no one consulted attorneys about the nondisclosures. This not only contradicts the sworn account given by COE spokesman KEN BLACKSTONE, who says Gundry told him to speak with outside counsel PATTY WHITE, but also another sworn They declaration Gundry gave Did to the court months later, What? in April. The COE has no SEND TIPS TO comment on the case.

Water District rejects low-cost, easy solution to stop floods

W

hen the Anderson Dam overflows, the middle of Coyote Creek floods. Every single time, ever since the dam was built in 1950.

It’s happened three times in the past two decades alone. In 1997 and 1998, the water inundated homes and businesses south from Tully Road up to Montague Expressway. It also happened earlier this year, when the 67-year-old dam filled to the brink and unleashed a torrent of water that forced thousands of people to evacuate from those same places, including the largely low-income Rock Springs neighborhood.

In the wake of the most recent disaster, the Santa Clara Valley Water

District vowed to build levees around Rock Springs and other flood-prone areas. But permanent infrastructure— flood walls, retaining ponds, creek widening—would cost about a billion dollars and take up to a decade to build.

A short-term, low-tech solution has been identified: floating pumps that could help keep the Anderson Reservoir levels below the brim for give-or-take $3 million. However, the water district—Silicon Valley’s lead flood protection agency—has no official plans to install them, even though they might have protected Rock Springs from the most recent flood that left hundreds homeless and caused $100 million in damage.

“The water district continues to ignore proven scientific hydrologic solutions to the problem until they can get the dam rebuilt,” said Jeffrey Hare, an attorney who lives in the Naglee Park neighborhood, which flooded a day after Rock Springs. “That’s going to

take at least seven more years—if they can get the money.”

Records obtained from the state Department of Water Resources (DWR) show that the water district’s Steven Wu, a senior engineer, submitted a proposal in mid-February to install floating water pumps for that very purpose. It went so far as to include an estimate from a vendor, HercRentals, which spelled out the cost and schematics.

Also on Feb. 13, another water district employee emailed the city of San Jose to “lean forward” with emergency preparations because of the flooding forecast for Presidents Day weekend. But Wu conveyed none of that urgency to the state. He made no mention of the rains that were filling the reservoir faster than the district could empty it.

State officials raised some concerns about Wu’s proposal, but invited him to submit a formal plan with more details. The district never followed through.

When San Jose Inside reached water district spokesman Marty Grimes for comment, he responded with a written explanation from the agency’s interim

of San Jose four months ago and has left hundreds of people homeless.

Ferraro compared the district’s dismissal of the pump option to the DWR disregarding pleas to pave the Oroville Dam spillway. In 2005, environmental groups filed a complaint with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, calling the Oroville spillway unsafe. The government dismissed the request after running it by California water regulators, who said everything was fine. It took a catastrophe 12 years later to prove them wrong. In February, the valley below flooded, forcing the evacuation of 200,000 people.

By contrast, Anderson Reservoir—a deep gorge full of 30 billion gallons of water—overlooks a valley that’s home to 1.8 million people. “There is so much more at risk here than in Oroville,” Hare said.

Last week, the water district voted to expand flood protections another few miles up Coyote Creek to Rock Springs—the neighborhood that bore the brunt of the deluge when Anderson Dam overflowed in February. The district agreed to extend levees through Tully Road to defend the working-class community against the kind of flood that strikes about every 25 years, such as this past Presidents Day weekend.

But the district’s June 13 vote doesn’t amount to much.

The board allocated no money for the plan and proposed no short-term protections for San Jose’s most floodprone areas. The only related action at the meeting involved forming a task force to study the issue, although no clear goals have been determined. It’s possible that the yet-to-be-formed task force will study the over-pump option, but there’s no guarantee.

The real problem, in Ferraro’s view, is that the water district has an identity crisis. It compartmentalizes its functions—to supply the region with water and protect it from floods— instead of integrating them. Despite spending a great amount of time and resources coming up with a plan called “One Water,” he said, the district continues to classify the reservoir solely for water supply.

“The dam could and should be redesignated as a multipurpose reservoir, and redesigned to rapidly draw down the reservoir during winter months and reserve capacity to capture future storms,” Ferraro said.

The district hasn’t pursued the pumping option, she wrote, because the system wouldn’t be able to eject water fast enough during heavy rainfall to keep the reservoir below its restricted level: 67 percent full, a limit imposed by the state because the dam lies on the San Andreas Fault.

Hare balked at that explanation.

“That’s not the point,” he said.

“They’re missing the boat entirely.”

Hare believes the pumps offer a short-term fix until the long-term plan materializes. Seismic retrofitting will take four years to complete, although construction isn’t planned until 2020 and funding remains uncertain.

During heavy storms and rainfall, Anderson Reservoir fills far beyond its restricted capacity. Sometimes it overflows. And each time it does, the same areas along mid-Coyote Creek get flooded. Since the dam’s construction, the district has filed 13 flood reports— state-mandated documents that detail weather events, affected areas, damage estimates, injuries and deaths. The records show that in eight of those cases, when the dam didn’t fill and spill, the flooding impacted the west side of Santa Clara Valley and Alviso.

In the rest of those instances, however, Anderson Reservoir swelled to the brink with rainfall and flooded the central stretch of Coyote Creek, from Tully to Montague.

If the district could keep Anderson at or below 99 percent capacity, it then follows, there would be no overspill and no flooding in the middle portion of Coyote Creek.

“At least, that is what the hydrological studies show,” Hare said. “The way to keep this 99 percent level, here and in reservoirs all over the world, is to use ‘pump-over’ systems, either with powered pumps or siphon pipes.”

Pat Ferraro, who served for 23 years on the water district’s board of directors, not only agreed with Hare’s assessment—he also said there’s a local precedent.

“Since the siphon method was actually deployed successfully at Calero Dam in the late 1980s, it can certainly be deployed at Anderson Dam,” said Ferraro, who teaches water policy at Santa Clara University. “It’s pretty low-impact, very efficient in terms of moving the water over the dam.”

If the district used the pumps as a stopgap until it completes the years-long Anderson Dam upgrade, Ferraro added, it would almost certainly prevent the kind of flood that tore through the heart

T 11AM ON a Sunday morning, I slip into a row of seats in front of a podium with flower bouquets on each side. I’m here to listen to an aging white man talk about the afterlife. A woman in a fancy hat arranges a potluck lunch on a back table. Other attendees, mostly gray-haired, pass around a wicker basket and toss in $20 bills and personal checks.

We aren’t in church. This is godless Silicon Valley.

The Humanist Society has welcomed Ralph Merkle, a Livermore native, to explain cryonics—the process of freezing one’s own body in “liquid goo” like Austin Powers—to the weekly Sunday Forum. We all want to know about being reawoken, or reborn, in the future.

Merkle, who has a Ph.D. in electrical

engineering from Stanford and invented what’s called “public key cryptology” in the ’70s, makes his pitch to the audience: hand over $80,000 plus yearly dues to Alcor, and the Scottsdale, Arizona-based company will freeze your brain, encased in its skull, so that you and your memories can wait out the years until medical nanotechnology is advanced enough to both bring you back from a frozen state

as well as fix the ills that brought you to death in the first place.

“You get to make a decision if you want to join the experimental group or the control group,” Merkle says. “The outcome for the control group is known.” Alcor gained infamy in 2002, when the body of baseball legend Ted Williams was flown to the company’s Arizona headquarters, where his head was then severed, frozen and, according to some reports, mistreated.

The Humanist Society is an ideal audience for Merkle’s presentation, as its congregants aren’t held back by the tricky business of believing in a soul.

(the answer: nematodes), when Alcor freezes bodies (after one’s heart stops if a DNR, or Do Not Resuscitate, order is requested), whether a frozen brain is any good if the rest of the body deteriorates (“Toss it,” Merkle says.

“Replacement of everything will be feasible.”) and what happens if Alcor goes bankrupt.

“We take that very seriously,” the doctor says.

Lunch is served.

“Why would he want to preserve somebody like Adolf Trump?” asks Bob Wallace, 93, who ate salad and cubed cheese with his partner, Marge Ottenberg, 91, whom he met at a Humanist Society event.

“Obviously, the worst possible people are most likely to want to live

forever,” says Arthur Jackson, 86, a retired junior high school teacher.

Ottenberg seems more open to the idea of coming back from the dead than her golden-year counterparts.

“Whatever works,” she says.

Silicon Valley is the sort of place where people dream about nanorobots fixing our medical disorders. It’s the sort of place where hundreds of millions of dollars are spent chasing that dream.

The last five years have seen an investment boom in what’s called “life extension” research. Some of it is straight-up science, such as the Stanford lab researching blood transfusions in mice to cure Alzheimer’s. Scientists are

in a race against time to help as many people as possible, as fast as possible.

They’re battling a disease that saw an 89 percent increase in diagnoses between 2000 and 2014, and Alzheimer's or other dementia is currently the sixth leading cause of death. There are also nontraditional sources of cash flowing into biotech, which was once considered a risky investment.

But death, itself, is the biggest social ill Silicon Valley is trying to solve.

We can build apps to keep track of diabetics' blood glucose levels, to measure how soundly we're sleeping and access medical records in an instant, but none of this stops the body from wearing out. Alongside the scientists laying the medical foundation to get us to the nanorobots envisioned by

Merkle, techie utopians are looking at other ways to cheat death. A cluster of tech companies are attracting far more funding from Silicon Valley than academia, shifting the research landscape with infusions of cash.

Bryan Johnson, an entrepreneur who sold his online payment company to PayPal for $800 million, was the first investor in Craig Venter’s Human Longevity, Inc., which aims to create a database of a million human genome sequences, including people who are over 100 years old, by 2020. Oracle founder Larry Ellison, who once said “death makes me very angry,” and is one of the oldest of the life-extension investors at 70, has also invested in Human Longevity. Johnson infused

Such projects are examples of Silicon Valley’s extreme confidence in its own ability to improve the world.

In an email, Johnson describes his work in grandly optimistic terms.

“Humanity's greatest masterpieces have happened when anchored in hope and aspiration, not drowning in fear,” he says.

It takes some serious chutzpah to say you’ll extend the human lifespan, and for Johnson, he and his colleagues are venturing where no one has gone before.

“Building good technology is an act of exploration, and that it is very difficult for us to imagine the good that might come from any new technology,” Johnson says. “We proceed, as explorers, nonetheless.”

Johnson’s lofty goals are similar

in scale to other giant anti-aging investments in Silicon Valley. In 2013, Google created an anti-aging lab called Calico (for “California Life Company”), hiring top scientist Cynthia Kenyon, known for altering DNA in worms to make them live twice as long as they usually do. Calico is not your local university research lab; it has $1.5 billion in the bank and has remained close-lipped about its progress, like a Manhattan Project for life extension.

For Google co-founder Sergey Brin, 43, Calico may be another way to attack a more personal health concern: Brin carries a gene that increases his likelihood of contracting Parkinson’s disease and has already invested $50 million in genetic Parkinson’s research, conducted by his ex-wife’s company, 23andMe. Brin said in 2009 that he hoped that medicine could “catch up” to cure Parkinson’s before he’s old enough to develop it.

That hope is a common thread among health-obsessed tech investors like PayPal founder Peter Thiel, 49. A

libertarian and Trump adviser, Thiel is trying to avoid both death and taxes.

His foundation hired a medical director, Jason Camm, whose professional goals include increasing his clients’ “prospects for Optimal Health and significant Lifespan Extension.” Like Brin, who swims and drinks green tea to prevent Parkinson’s, Thiel has changed his daily habits to live longer. He’s aiming for 120, so he avoids refined sugar, follows the Paleo diet, drinks red wine, and takes human growth hormone, which he believes will keep bones strong and prevent arthritis.

Thiel has also expressed personal interest in a company called Ambrosia in Monterey, where Dr. Jesse Karmazin is conducting medical trials for a procedure called parabiosis, which gives older people blood plasma transfusions from people between 16 and 25.

Karmazin has enrolled more than 70 participants so far, each of whom pays $8,000 for the treatment. Much has been made of Thiel harvesting and receiving injections of young people's

blood, though Karmazin recently denied that Thiel was a client of his.

Karmazin doesn’t call himself utopian, but he does note that his work requires some faith. “There’s always uncertainty about whether it’s going to stand the test of time, whether it’ll work at all,” he says.

“That’s especially true in technology, and you have to believe in it.”

At the same time, the dystopians of Silicon Valley are preparing for the apocalypse. Reid Hoffman, CEO of LinkedIn, told the New Yorker that he guesses up to 50 percent of tech executives have property in New Zealand, the hot new hub for the end of the world. Steve Huffman, CEO of Reddit, bought multiple motorcycles so he can weave through highway traffic if there’s a natural disaster and he needs to escape. He also got laser eye surgery so he wouldn’t have to rely on glasses or contacts in a survival scenario.

Among the dystopians is Elon Musk, whose brand-new Neuralink company is investigating what Musk calls “neural lace,” a digital layer on top of the brain’s cortex that connects us to computers.

Such inventions could eventually lead us to what Google Director of Engineering Ray Kurzweil calls “technological singularity,” or the time when evermore-powerful artificial intelligence will surpass human intelligence, around 2045. Musk is nervous about that day, and part of the reason he wants to colonize Mars through his SpaceX plan is because humans need an escape route in case computers take over—or, perhaps, in case of environmental apocalypse. Musk recently quit two of President Donald Trump’s business advisory councils over Trump’s decision to leave the Paris climate accords, tweeting “Climate change is real.”

Tech companies as a bloc urged Trump not to leave the Paris agreements; Tim Cook of Apple called him after the announcement to try to get him to change his mind, and Mark Zuckerberg wrote on his Facebook page that leaving Paris would “put our children’s future at risk.”

Zuckerberg has been trying for years to knock down four houses to build a residential compound in Palo Alto, including a basement structure that sounds like a bunker, with “dark steel doors and windows” and a

DEMOLITION DERBY Sylvester Stallone used cryonics to come back to an absurd future in the cult classic ‘Demolition Man.’ “dark grey standing seam metal roof,” perfect for hiding the whole family if the world ends.

Whether climate change destroys California or regular old death arrives before investors have funded a cure, Musk, Zuckerberg and their elite peers have the resources to plan an escape.

The question is whether they’re interested in planning anyone else’s.

Tony Wyss-Coray, director of the Stanford Alzheimer’s Research Center, which is on the forefront of anti-aging research, has seen that conflict up close.

“I have been approached by billionaires from LA and Texas, and they already have their clinics in the Bahamas or wherever, where they inject themselves with stem cells,” he says.

But those billionaires weren’t interested in funding his lab or curing disease for anyone else.

“They’re interested in living,” Wyss-Coray says. “They realize quickly they can’t buy this directly from Stanford University.”

The line between science and someone’s obsession with mortality is blurry, especially with this much cash flowing.

“It’s hard to completely disassociate the influence of wealthy, rich people from what we do,” Wyss-Coray says. Until the recent influx of funding and attention, the anti-aging scientists he knew “were just a bunch of academic geeks” studying worms. He’s interested not in extending life as much as figuring out why certain people can live past 100 years old.

“The average person at 60 or 65 starts to suffer from a multitude of agerelated diseases—arthritis, heart disease, cognitive decline—that for some reason the centenarians seem to be able to escape from, and that’s what drives many of us in the field.”

But when Thiel is reading one’s research, things get more complicated.

Wyss-Coray’s studies on the benefits of parabiosis in mice, for example, form the basis of the Monterey trial that so fascinates Thiel. Wyss-Coray is quick to distance himself from Karmazin.

“He cites all our work on his website,” Wyss-Coray says.

The first two studies in the “Science” section of the Ambrosia website are from Stanford’s labs, and the first study Karmazin lists about plasma transfusions in mice is Wyss-Coray’s.

Many scientists consider clinical trials like Karmazin’s unethical and scientifically unsound, since they require participant payment for unproven treatments, and you can’t charge someone $8,000 for a placebo, so there’s no simultaneous control group. The Ambrosia trial passed an ethical review, but Karmazin acknowledges the criticism.

“Some people are opposed to it for ethical reasons,” he says. “That’s understandable, but I still think it’s worth doing, so I’m trying to treat people.”

Wyss-Coray is ambivalent about his research being exploited for profit. “You contribute a small piece to knowledge that frequently can be abused by somebody,” he says. “I feel somewhat guilty, but I hope at the same time, we can contribute to

maybe having an impact on some diseases, and that will be offset.”

Back under the fluorescent lights at the Humanist Society, Merkle explains that in addition to freezing themselves, people can use Alcor as a bank, putting money aside so that they don’t wake up poor in 100 years. Future poverty is a common enough concern that Merkle includes it in his presentation. Why would anyone want to live forever if it meant working three jobs to survive?

Indeed, people who are struggling to pay rent right now won’t be able to afford to freeze themselves, so anyone waking up from cryogenic sleep will be wealthy, and most of them will be white, just like the bros pioneering biotech startups and building underground bunkers. Indeed, about 75 percent of Alcor’s frozen customers are male, and Max More, its CEO, is a libertarian like Thiel. The men who have everything want to keep it all, indefinitely.

Income inequality makes life extension the ultimate oligarchical fantasy. A month before Gawker shut down last year, bankrupted by Thiel’s campaign against it, reporter J.K. Trotter mused, “It’s not hard to imagine a Thielist future in which members of the overclass literally purchase the blood of the young poor in order to lead longer, healthier lives than their lesser counterparts can afford.”

In Thiel’s libertarian universe, the luckiest people could live forever, feeding on the blood of Silicon Valley’s youthful underclass—hey there, San Jose renters!—and living on extragovernmental barges like the seasteads Thiel dreams about, without paying taxes to help anyone else. Floating cities might be helpful if flooding and erosion destroy the California coastline, as CalMatters’ Julie Cart reported could happen 70 years from now.

Taking the scenario a little further, birth would be unnecessary, since no death would mean no one would need to be replaced. That might make people with wombs a little less than necessary, as well, especially if those barges are populated with the new crop of alt-right dudes who sleep with men because they worship masculinity.

Thiel, who is gay, would probably find it preferable to get by without women; he considers date rape as “belated

15 whether a medically assisted longer life will be inaccessible to almost all of us.

That’s assuming, of course, that we even want a longer life, or to wake up after a cryogenic sleep. We may value our time on Earth, but not everyone thinks it’s worth it to stick around indefinitely.

If your Silicon Valley brain sees the world as a place of obstacles that can always be overcome, where every system can be disrupted for the better and your brain is the one that will unlock a better future, you might be more inclined to stay. That might also be true if you think the universe is a place to conquer, whether via spaceship to Mars a la Musk or through politics like Thiel.

But what might the future look like, for those who want to (and can afford to) stay?

Google’s Kurzweil envisions three medical stages before singularity, starting with our current push to slow aging. Stage two: building on genomic research, including personalized fixes for diseases like cancer. Kurzweil believes we’ll get to the medical nanotechnology that Merkle envisions by the 2030s, which would lead us to the last phase— nanorobots connecting us to “the cloud” in 2045. At that point, avatars of our brains could be loaded into another body. Then we’d live forever.

Bodily ailments would be curable and we’d access consciousness from the cloud, but we’d still lose our memories when our physical brains stopped working. A better (and still terrifying) option might be freezing our brains via cryonics and then bringing them back with nanorobots.

Kurzweil has signed himself up to be frozen, in case the 90 supplements he takes daily don’t keep him alive.

Wyss-Coray, of Stanford, has chosen not to go into the meat locker. “I can’t think of any way to connect that to what we’re doing,” he says. “I haven’t signed up for that myself.”

Neither have most other people.

Cryonics remains unproven, cost prohibitive and unusually creepy to the general population, an option for the rich and famous who would need several lifietimes to see their savings run dry. At this rate they’ll likely outlive us, so we might as well enjoy some refined sugar, pay our taxes and stop fearing the reaper.

regret” and once blamed women’s voting rights for the eventual demise of democracy. His worldview is the warped conservative version of feminist theorist Donna Haraway’s Cyborg Manifesto, in which she imagined the freedom in a “world without genesis, but maybe also a world without end.”

Back in 1984, the author predicted a future where we merged with machines, but warned against letting “racist, male-dominant capitalism” control technology, since hippie progressives are not cheerleading the convergence of humans and machines.

It might all sound far-fetched, but Thiel shares an anarcho-capitalist worldview with White House senior adviser Steve Bannon, among the most powerful people in America right now.

And the House passed a health care law that saves money on insurance by letting poor people die faster, moralizing that poor people don’t want to be healthy.

Californians may not agree with that law outright, but Silicon Valley’s bootstrappy cult of health is based on the nerds’ association between fitness and brainpower. They’re taking up kiteboarding, tracking steps on Fitbits and eating ketogenic diets during stressful times at startups. It’s not a big jump to life extension for the rich, who deserve to live longer after all that effort.

Are the ethics of life-extension technology any different from historical questions of who gets access to medicine? Maybe not.

Karmazin hadn’t yet considered the topic before our phone call. “I haven’t had this kind of conversation with anyone yet,” he says. But Karmazin compares his trial to the introduction of antibiotics. “Someone who didn’t have access to antibiotics when they were invented? Man, they’d probably be really upset. That’s reasonable.” He foresees similar problems with blood plasma as a cure for aging: “I think it’s going to be unevenly distributed.”

Wyss-Coray has serious concerns about that distribution.

“We have enough problems in the world already, and I definitely do not want a select group of people to live longer just because they can afford it,” he says.

In this country, the richest 1 percent in the U.S. live 15 years longer than the poorest 1 percent, meaning Wyss-Coray’s fear is already our reality. The question is how much worse things can get, and

San Jose Uses Grant to Finally Develop Big City Vision

BY CAMILLE MILLER San Jose’s “Capital of Silicon Valley” aspirations have spurred a series of development proposals with vast goals and distant endpoints. Now it’s up to a new chief architect to help the city live up to those plans.

Timothy Rood became San Jose’s first principal city designer on May 8, and he’s been tasked with redesigning development standards in the downtown and Diridon Station areas. The timing is no accident, as earlier this month the city and Google announced plans for an 8 million square foot office project that could create as many as 20,000 jobs.

Rood’s position was made possible by a $150,000 grant through the Knight Cities Challenge, which the city will match over the next 18 months.

“For the last two years, we’ve been talking about this issue with the Knight Foundation,” says Kim

Walesh, director of San Jose’s Office of Economic Development, adding that other cities like Los Angeles and New York City have had positions like the one San Jose just created.

Rood’s role will be to carry out existing plans like the Envision San Jose 2040 general plan and the Diridon Station area plan.

He’ll lead a team focused on defining land use, urban design and parking guidelines for the space surrounding the station, as well as the broader downtown.

Walesh says the Google announcement—occurring before the city and company have even started negotiations—increases the need for a city designer such as Rood.

While ambitions run high among city officials to claim ownership over the Capital of Silicon Valley title, tangible results remain elusive.

It will take at least a decade for the proposed Googleplex to build out, and the same goes for the creation of a planned BART and high-speed rail extensions into Diridon Station.

Much of downtown’s anticipated redesign also requires changes to the city’s building codes and zoning laws.

The grant and appointment is the most recent action in a string of efforts San Jose has made to create an urban “scene,” often to mixed results.

In the past, San Jose has spent millions of dollars on projects aimed at revitalizing the downtown area, only to see those projects go over budget or shutter within several years.

Prior to being hired into his new role, Rood was a principal of the Oakland-based firm Community Design + Architecture. He has worked on transit-oriented development in the Bay Area for 20 years.

$26,000 San Jose’s biggest lobbyists have routinely missed reporting deadlines. As a result, they racked up hefty fines. The San Jose Earthquakes ran up a $26,000 tab before paying it off last year.

Hopkins & Carley, the law firm that employs former Mayor Chuck Reed, owed $22,000. Tom Saggau and Dustin DeRollo let charges stack up to $4,000 before City Clerk Toni Taber sent them a past-due notice to pay up. Frustrated with the missed deadlines, the city began accepting email filings and registration, which along with email reminders, has dramatically improved compliance. This week, the City Council decided to require weekly updates on lobbyist meetings. Though the reporting requirements are more frequent, they’re also less strict. Taber says her office will only be able to monitor compliance through random spot checks.

The last time Tool released a record was in 2006. Maybe that’s why the tickets for their upcoming show at the Shark Tank are going for just $15. Though they have explicitly stated they won’t be putting out any new music this year, there’s still been a good amount of activity from the legendary band. Even if there’s no new release immediately forthcoming, they’ll likely play new songs in San Jose, as the band has been including some new material in recent sets. And with their, uh, “highly” trippy live shows, the SAP Center is set to look like one massive third eye. (MH)

In 2006, the Dukedom of Illyria became the elite boarding school setting of a contemporary teenage drama that catalyzed Channing Tatum’s evolution from male stripper to movie star. This year, playwright Max Gutmann reinvents the beloved Elizabethan era comedy by rearranging thousands of snippets from the original play and shifting savvy sea captain Antonio to center stage. Little does Sebastian’s friend (or lover?) know that in this rendition, his happy life is about to fall apart. Kidnapping, cross-dressing and flirtation convene in the world premiere of this madcap travesty production that runs until July 16. (CM)

As the host of The Daily Show, Trevor Noah is one of the most recognizable faces on late night television. The South African-born comedian takes a break from the small screen and returns to the big stage in Saratoga this Friday. During his set, Noah will undoubtedly draw upon his long journey from Johannesburg to New York. The child of an African mother and European father, Noah has faced many hurdles on account of the color of his face.

The show is also sure to cover current events, as Noah brings his multiethnic perspective and humor to the day’s headlines. (PR)

Judging by the heat wave we’re currently boiling through, it’s clear that summer has arrived— and that’s just fine with the guys from Katchafire. Hailing from Hamilton, New Zealand, the band has been pumping out sunny, roots-reggae anthems since their formation in 2000 as a Bob Marley tribute band. It’s been a minute since the band dropped a full-length (2010’s On The Road Again), they released the laid-back single “Burn It Down” last September. Katchafire will be joined by Monterey Bay reggae group One A-Chord, Bay Area toprankers Mango Kingz. (YK)

Even rap rock—spawned in the late-’90s—has been showing signs of life lately; there aren’t many bands bigger than Twenty One Pilots. It’s hard to say whether the duo who gave us the hip-hop infused smash album Blurryface owe anything to Crazy Town (you know, the “Butterfly” guys). But they’re coming to town, so... Chain wallets, cargo pants and Airwalks optional. (NV)

THE RAP OPERA PROJECT Sat, 7pm, $10 MACLA, San Jose Beat-boxer and rap artist Carlos Aguirre—a.k.a. emcee Infinite— has spent the past few months guiding local youths in writing exercises along with opera singer Alexandra Sessler as part of his Rap Opera Project. Together, Sessler and Aguirre aim to help the young writers improve while also teaching them about the history and culture of opera and rap respectively. The project culminates in a show at MACLA this weekend, where the young artists will put on a performance that features their work as they create a narrative of their experiences living in San Jose. From B.B. to John Lee, the best bluesmen only improve with age. Case in point: Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-inductee Elvin Bishop. His 1976 single “Fooled Around and Fell in Love” recently found younger audiences on the first Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack, and he proves he’s still got it on his 2014 LP Can’t Even Do Wrong Right, with its knee-slapping title track. Bad Grad HERE’S TO YOU The Palo Alto Players are currently staging a production of ‘The Graduate.’

Palo Alto Players provide a fresh, funny take on ‘The Graduate’

INCE ITS RELEASE as a novel in 1963, followed shortly after by the classic 1967 film starring Dustin Hoffman and Anne Bancroft, The Graduate has been an important cultural point of reference. Nearly a half century later, it has been baked into the radioactive background of American life.

Now it’s the Palo Alto Players’ turn to take a stab at the eminent comingof-age comedy.

The play opens on Benjamin Braddock sitting awkwardly on his bed. He’s wearing a wet suit his father

bought him and is dreading facing a sea of people downstairs—all there to celebrate his college graduation.

Benjamin almost is prepared to escape his house and avoid the party entirely when a family friend—Mrs. Robinson—finds her way into his room while looking for a place to rest. Before Benjamin can protest, Mrs. Robinson is undressing in a successful attempt to seduce him. That evening marks the beginning of an affair between them, one that will transform their respective families and eventually push all of the characters toward a dangerous and lifealtering conclusion.

All of the actors in this production are performing in tip-top shape.

Benjamin’s parents (portrayed by Raegena Raymond-Brunker and Shawn Bender) play the supportive, but equally smothering, old-school parents perfectly,

down to their fallacious singsongy optimism. The tricky role of Elaine Robinson, played by Michelle Skinner, manages the combination of naive and worldly with a great spacey touch. Her father, Mr. Robinson (played by Mark Novak) too portrays a friend of the family in a charmingly maudlin manner.

The hugely complex role of Mrs. Robinson is taken by Betsy Kruse Craig with a tempting—but very human—sex appeal. She’s can be both unflappable and fragile, but above all she is cool as a cucumber. The standout performance goes to Max Tachis as Benjamin. He artfully combines gawky with funny, slick with silly, in a way that slowly unveils the character’s maladjustments.

He’s a psychopathic stalker when it comes down to it, but Tachis plays it to a endearing and believable degree.

Talking about problems with the script is unavoidable. This is a not an easy story to convert from screen to stage. Playing more like a reader’s digest version than the actual story, The Graduate stage play leaves little room for depth, cutting between space and time, condensing plot points and progressions

into a series of hurried vignettes. These changes are understandable in some places, but others—like the infamous scene of seduction by Mrs. Robinson— are crammed to fit in between layers of exposition, sweeping all the tension and bite of the scene into a spinning wheel of action.

Luckily the cast rise to the challenges of the script, and often supersede its haphazardness, giving the pinwheel-like nature of the script some places to drop anchors. Although there isn’t much ensemble work, the cast practically functions as one in their ability to maintain a cohesive pace without neglecting character development.

And where the original film played off of novelty and awkward sexual humor to great effect, it comes from a sophisticated place—something that is retained in Palo Alto’s adaptation—even with all the glimpses of cheeky nudity.

Benjamin’s uptight, if not eventually disturbing, neurosis opens a door for all the characters to come into their dysfunctional own. From the bit part of a homeless character to Mrs. Robinson herself, all are equally fun and believable.

And where the original script falters in its composition, the Palo Alto Players production shines in its affectations. The set is spare and unadorned, consisting of four layers of wood-paneled walls—’60s-style— jutting out from the wings. The play takes place entirely in this setting, with hotel rooms and smoky bars being rolled in and out in a believable way.

In everything from succinct but timely musical cues to the moody, noirish light that bathes certain scenes and characters, Palo Alto Theater Company nails the feel of the characters and, moreover, the steamy danger and uncertainty that lurk at the heart of this comedy.

Everyone remembers the famous scenes of taboo and temptation, but The Graduate was always more than a sexy romp. It’s a story about pretense, identity, autonomy and, of course, sex.

In the context of Palo Alto Players’ adaptation, the witty, often ribald humor and cautionary themes about desire are more timely than ever.

GIRL TALK Comedian Andy Woodhull has built a comedy career, joking about his wife and two stepdaughters.

Keeping it Personal AFTER GRADUATING WITH a degree in geology and environmental science, comedian Andy Woodhull didn’t particularly enjoy working in a lab for a company that sold clay. He wanted to do stand-up, but didn’t realize the ladderclimbing that comes through open mics, then second-billed sets at comedy clubs.

“I used to think you were just being funny in a restaurant one day and show business would come and say, ‘You’re the next Jerry Seinfeld,’” he says.

In 2005, he discovered the scene in Chicago and eventually worked up the courage to quit his job and start touring in 2008. He basically hasn’t stopped doing it since, working about 45 weeks of the year. At first, he focused on writing riffs on Andy Woodhull topics like frozen pizza, aiming for Seinfeld-esque observations on the mundane. But then, he opened Jun 22-25, Various for fellow comedian Mike Birbiglia, who basically Times, $14+ advised him to cut the crap.

Rooster T. Feathers, Sunnyvale “After the show, he told me, ‘If you really want to be original, the only way is to talk about yourself.' And that really changed the way that I wrote jokes,” Woodhull says.

As documented on his most recent album, Stepparenting, he married a woman with two daughters—a situation that’s yielded some truly great bits. In one, he sets up by explaining how his wife got angry at him for having dishes from his prior relationship. Then he reminds the audience his dishes don’t “sort of look like my ex-girlfriend.”

Woodhull says his stepdaughters were impressed when he performed on the late-night shows of Jimmy Fallon and Conan O’Brien, but most of the time, their attitude is closer to how one of them responded to his suggestion for a white elephant Christmas party.

“I jokingly offered to sign one of my comedy albums and she said, ‘Andy, no one knows who you are,’ which really sums it up,” he says.

Although touring takes him away most weekends, he devotes the front of the week to his ladies, occasionally catching a flick at the dollar theater near his home in North Carolina. It’s an arrangement that’s more gratifying than his first post-grad gig. “My goal in comedy,” he says, “is to keep being funny for a living, and not have to wake up at 5:30 to go into a lab anymore.” —John Flynn

Flower Power VOODOO CHILD The ‘Monterey Pop’ documentary captured seminal moments in rock history and redefined the concert film genre.

After 50 years, ‘Monterey Pop’ doc gets remastered release

HOUGH YEARS BEFORE Woodstock, the Monterey Pop Festival was just as important— it’s just that the importance of a cultural event mathematically increases with its proximity to New York. Staged 50 years ago, this last weekend at the Monterey County Fairgrounds, the fest was preserved by the innovative documentary maker D.A. Pennebaker (Don’t Look Back) and a team including Richard Leacock and Albert Maysles (Gimme Shelter.)

Back in a 4k restoration, the film now has a preamble. Pennebaker (now age 92) describes how John Phillips of The Mamas and the Papas and Phillips’ manager Lou Adler created a charitable nonprofit to get everyone working for scale. This, in Pennebaker’s view, made Monterey a show among equals. The sound system was unusually good, too.

Newly built sound-synchronizing cameras conquered the way a live performance was customarily filmed—with the camera nailed down, front and center.

The collective camera here is male, cruising the pretty blondes in the audience. But in immediacy and effect, it’s revolutionary. The closeups from telescopic lenses get almost abstract: Otis Redding silhouetted and nimbused, lens flares from the

house lights diffusing his breath on a frosty night. (It was full June gloom on the coast; never forget that the fabled Summer of Love was rainy.)

Caught on the fly, the faces match the psychedelic lightshow patterns by the group Headlights.

The Jefferson Airplane covers Judy Henske’s “High Flying Bird” and survives a tech problem—Grace Slick’s vocals not being picked up by the mike as she sings backup vocals on “Today,” one of the sturdiest and prettiest love songs of its age. Flown in from London, The Who are disappointing.

They give up “My Generation” complete with guitar smash…the micdrop of 1967.

The best of The Who can be seen elsewhere in footage of the 1970 Leeds festival. The best of this film is Jimi Hendrix doing “Wild Thing.” Chomping gum, ludicrously handsome in a yellow pirate shirt and a Central Asian vest, Hendrix plays some free-rock—a few licks from “Strangers in the Night” of all things, with behind the back fingering and

oceans of feedback. Finally a kneeling guitar sacrifice, with goodbye kiss to the soon-to-be-martyred instrument.

It looks as fresh as the Who’s guitar smashing looks like shtick. (And it’s worth the destruction to see the reaction shots of the audience to Hendrix’s act, full of wild surprise and a bit of fear.) There’s nothing like that moment when you see a performer from 50 years ago and they look surprising today.

This tribute to the various schools of pop ends with something classical: a long Ravi Shankar raga. The cameras pick up the faces of some people tripping balls—the customary state for Westerners listening to Indian classical in those days—but the close-up sticks with Shankar as he frets the treacherous sitar, with its two dozen or so tuning pegs.

Shankar’s musicianship is received by the crowd as a primordial yet ultimate Telecaster solo; the oldest music displayed here manifesting itself as a culmination of the styles.

The mortality rate is chilling— Redding, Hendrix, Joplin, Keith Moon, Cass Elliot and Brian Jones, seen in passing. It’s troubling that Hendrix opens for sweet pop stars like The Mamas and Papas. The Mamas and the Papas aren’t that bad, even though they perform that dreaded song about California, used in the Lotto ads lately. They’re sweeter on “Got a Feeling” a dirge for dying love, iced with spine-tingling electric harpsichord. It plays over a montage of lovers, clinging, sauntering, or snuggled in sleeping bags. The last line of the song: “The joke’s on you.”

As it would prove to be. With its banners touting love and flowers, Monterey Pop shows the tribes before they went their separate ways. In 2017, the movie has the air of the Shire birthday party in those last moments before Gandalf arrives to discuss Mr. Baggins’ jewelry collection. All and sundry were about to take a long walk into Mordor. The next year, 1968, would bring assassinations, escalation, tin soldiers and Nixon coming … and so, on to the road of today.

NEVER SAY DIE/THE ROAD TO MOROCCO

(1939/1942 ) At the spa of Bad Gasswasser, Switzerland, a peevish hypochondriac named Kidley (Bob Hope)—heir to the Kidley's Beans fortune—is consulting a specialist about his stomach. The local doctor (Monty Woolley) goofs and switches the millionaire's medical record with a dog's.

Bad news: the rich man is diagnosed with a case of “acidus canus”: stomach acid so powerful it can dissolve bones.

According to the doctor, Kidley will literally digest himself from the inside out within one month. Bolstered with philosophical consolation from his manservant Jeepers (Ernest Cossart), Kidley involves himself in the case of another guest at the spa: an oil princess (Martha Raye) being forced into a marriage with a wastrel aristocrat named Prince Smirnoff (Alan Mowbray).

The man she really loves is a bus driver back home in Texas (perennial hayseed Andy Devine). Preston Sturges is one of three hands credited on the screenplay of this unjustly forgotten screwball comedy, derived from a 1912 farce. Never Say Die often seems more like Sturges in his prime than, say, some of Sturges' lesser movies out past Unfaithfully Yours. It was a flop, dumped after a one-week run in New York. Probably, it failed because of miscasting. Hope is obviously trying to do a Jack Benny part here. The difference between the two personas—Benny's pedantic fussiness vs. Hope's nervous wisecracking—may have been enough to drive off the few who showed up.

Still, Never Say Die deserves a new life.

The Universal Studios Germanic Village sets—where the famous monsters roamed—have, like parts of Europe, a lot of fake-European charm. Gale Sondergaard plays a comic version of one of her usual man-killers. Raye— here, an overripe version of Ginger Rogers—does some more restrained comic acting for a change. What a life she had—as turbulent as Judy Garland's; in fact, Garland stole one of Raye's six husbands. Born backstage in a Montana theater, Raye ended up in Sid and Marty Kroft living puppet shows such as H.R. Pufnstuf. While Hope is known for his USO work, Raye actually did combat nursing: wounded three times, she held an honorary rank as a lieutenant colonel in the Marines. BILLED WITH The Road to Morocco. Hope and Bing Crosby are shipwrecked in a vaguely Arab landscape and threatened like the infidel dogs they are. The journey includes flying

carpets, talking camels, Anthony Quinn in a burnoose making with the poetic insults and swishing around a scimitar, while Dorothy Lamour swans about in a harem outfit. Not exactly something that would please Edward Said, but somehow deathless. It’s certainly what Seth Rogen keeps trying to do, anyway. OH, HELLO ON BROADWAY

For one thing, it’s the exception to the rule that filmed theater doesn’t work.

This spinoff of characters created by Nick Kroll and John Mulaney is a weird and uproarious show staged last year. It ought to sweep Broadway clean of the residue of Neil Simon—it’s a savage parody of “Sunshine Boys” style kvetchfest with a pair of old-timers. The larger and tougher George (Mulaney) is an unpublishable novelist whose latest work is about the commuters on the Long Island Railroad, “Next Stop, Ronkonkoma”. His roommate of 40 years is Gil (Kroll), shorter, stranger and with a Hawaiian shirt-weiner sticking out of his half closed zipper. Gil’s secret is that he’s sexually attracted to raccoons, though they break his heart in the end. Airing their grievances, they recall how close they came to fame.

The pair seem to have hit their stride some years ago with a public access show titled “Too Much Tuna”; as they restage an episode, celebrity guest star Steve Martin comes in (and it’s actually one of the best interviews this diffident performer has done). The two are also staging a half-finished play, about, wait for it, a pair of feuding senior citizen roommates, interspersed with nap breaks and interruptions for screaming at the intern doing the lighting cues.

Kroll and Mulaney are tough, gifted actors, handling the mock-serious stuff with some show of teeth and gall. And the dialect is killer. It’s George Jessel, but with even shorter vowels—“utrage” for outrage, “ordition” meaning a place an actor goes to seek work, and “dialorgue” for what an actor recites when he gets to the ordition; Gil also puts the Yiddish “ch” sound on places it’s usually not heard, such as the garbanzo bean dip “chummus.” Here is a valuable demonstration of stagecraft—how to eat like you’re starring in a ’70s movie, how to cough so the audience knows you’re going to keel over in the next act, and how to have a one-sided phone call on stage by repeating the info (“You found her head, where?”). Learn also the importance of warming up some badly remembered nostalgia, for the seniors in the mezzanine: “I hate to be the first to say it, but New York has changed.” (Netflix) (RvB)

ATTACK OF THE ROBOTS Michael Bay assaults movie screens across the country with his latest ‘Transformers’ installment.

Nuts and Bolts LIKE A WEALTHY scrap merchant seeking a coat of arms, director Michael Bay hired Anthony Hopkins’ integrity to fluff up the class of Transformers: The Last Knight. As Sir Edmund Burton, an earl with historical connections to the medieval roots of this Transformers business, Hopkins keeps a level voice with lines like: “Without sacrifice, there can be no victory… without leaders, chaos reigns.”

The speediest way down the path to madness is to try to synopsize a Michael Bay movie. It begins in King Arthur’s day with a drunken Merlin—muttering dialogue that could be improved by any Renaissance Faire busker—unleashing a three-headed mega-Ghidrah to save Arthur’s skin. The Arthurian scenes look more lavish and exciting than the recent King Arthur movie, but then it’s off to our near future. It’s a dark time; we know this because we’re told as much. The Transformer robots are in hiding being besieged by soldiers, and Optimus Prime has floated off to find his home world.

Above the clashes, we almost hear something topical about immigrants (“One day, we’ll wake up and they’ll be in charge,” says a character of the ’bots). In the battered slums of Chicago, the plucky little girl Izabelle (Isabela Moner)—who will give the movie’s climactic fist pump

and shout of Yes!—looks like she’s going to be the movie’s heroine. But she’s off to a junkyard in the Dakotas where Mark Wahlberg is waiting—his Cade Yeager is protecting an odd lot of bots, including a burly soldier voiced by John Goodman.

Ever restless, Bay heads for Oxford where the hotty history professor Laura Haddock is insulting the memory of King Arthur.

Locations, locations, locations. Stonehenge, Transformers: The Havana, Namibia; at Last Knight one point John Turturro gets on the phone PG-13, 148 Mins. claiming that the Book of Valleywide Kells is printed on “goat scrotum” (parchment).

What was this script printed on?

It’s a pity this is so bewilderingly bad, with Bay’s reliably smelly sexual politics.

Giant robots are impressive when they punch their mammoth heads out of a 3-D IMAX screen; in close-up, these mega-goliaths look like the work of Boris Artzybasheff, who did for gears and bolts what the artist Arcimboldo did for zucchinis. But watching Bay, you never know where you are, you never know who’s shouting, you never know why every entity in the universe has to bump its chest or bitchslap something’s face.

A LITTLE HISTORY Calistoga, at the northernmost point of Napa Valley, is well-known for some of the world’s top wineries, but originally, it was all about mud.

Ten thousand years ago, the Wappo tribe migrated west and south from what is now Russia. They sought a place to live near water, with fertile ground and mountains to provide protection from harsh weather. Arriving in the territory that came to be named Calistoga, the Wappo found a land full of wild brush, with hot steam emerging from the ground due to geothermal springs. The Wappo soon discovered that the natural mineral springs and mud was therapeutic.

The mud itself evolved from a volcanic eruption three million years earlier, when lava exploded and a burst of red-hot ash created what is known today in Calistoga as the Petrified Forest. When mixed with geothermal mineral water, this ash, found throughout Calistoga to this day, creates a delightfully detoxifying mud.

“Be in the moment” counsels Robert Lane, Solage’s Deepak Chopra-trained Aqua Vibrations leader.

At 8 a.m. a small group of intrepid floatees enter the largest of three hot springs mineral pools for a unique 90-minute wellness experience now being offered at Solage, an Auberge Resort in beautiful Calistoga.

The gradual progression from seated to standing and chanting while chanting “gong fu” (in the moment…in the moment…in the moment) is an experience in and of itself, but there’s so much more coming. Instructed to swim across the pool to climb atop one of three comfy, body-length floats, each floatee is covered with white cotton towels in preparation to surrender minds and bodies. With the hot springs below, and the comfort of the warm, wet towels on top, the sensation almost replicates the feel of being in a womb or cocoon. At one with the universe, it becomes impossible to tell where the water ends and bodies begin.

The meditative state is genuine, snug and soothing and a reminder that we are but a speck in the universe.

As a breeze slightly sways the floats, Robert serenades the group into an even deeper state of relaxation with a symphony of sounds made by swirling and submerging quartz “singing bowls” into the water. The color of each bowl and its melody corresponds with various chakra colors, and is mesmerizing.

There are seven hot springs resorts and ten spas in Calistoga that offer traditional mud baths, hot springs or mineral pools.

The concept of detoxifying the body through the external use of volcanic ash mixed with geothermal-heated water is offered everywhere.

Indian Springs Resort, operating since 1861, is the town’s oldest hot springs resort. The property has retained its mission of providing respite, complete with quiet, palm-tree’d grounds, the sight and sound of hot geysers and a meditative Buddha pond. Its large outdoor mineral pool is the heart and soul of this lushly landscaped resort and is the best place to relax and rejuvenate pre- or post-spa treatments. The mud bath here is considered 100 percent authentic; volcanic ash is mixed with peat moss and geothermal water poured in six-foot stucco “bath” tubs. First, one sinks deep into the thick mud, followed by a shower and a soak in a mineral springs filled bathtub.

The Spa at Euro Spa & Inn offers a Far Infrared UV Sauna. Unlike the traditional sauna which uses convection heat as a warming element, Infrared UV Sauna uses radiant heat that absorbs directly into your body. The story chronicles the adventures of a huge bear that would come down from the mountains in search of food, surprising the local Justice of the Peace whose home he routinely raided. That elusive bear was never trapped. During this time Thomas Knight (namesake of Knights Valley) was leading the charge to raise the Bear Flag and pronounce California as an independent state.

We imagine that the Bear Flaggers were inspired by this local bear, and decided to celebrate the bear’s independent spirit on the California State Bear Flag.

Chris Hardwick combines diverse tastes for sprawling ID10T Fest

T’S HARD TO think of another celebrity as uniquely positioned to pull together an event like this weekend’s ID10T Music Festival + Comic Conival as Chris Hardwick.

The creator of the Nerdist media network has spent the last decade establishing himself as the preeminent pop-culture geek—as comfortable weighing in on philosophical debates

about comic books as he is serving as a guest judge on America’s Got Talent.

Through his many ventures in the entertainment world, the multihyphenate actor, comedian and talkshow host has interviewed big-name musicians and movie stars—chatting with the likes of Paul McCartney and Daniel Radcliffe on his podcast— penned articles for WIRED, and just last year caught his first big network TV break when he was tapped to host NBC’s The Wall game show. In the process he has compiled a mighty Rolodex that includes indie comedy heroes like Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein of Portlandia and Dan

Harmon, the creator of Community and Rick and Morty, as well as indie musicians, like the masters of deceptively simple music videos, OK Go. All that and he absolutely loves comic books, maker culture and the brave new world of high tech.

“I guess it was kind of a selfish expression of all the things that I want to see,” Hardwick says of the impetus to pull together a two-day festival featuring a totally stacked slate of standup comedy, live music, celebrity panels and a comic con-esque bazaar at the Shoreline Amphitheatre. “I was really just trying to pull my favorite elements of all the events that I go to all the time.”

Among the many performances and events planned for ID10T: a live recording of the Harmontown podcast; a panel discussion between Hardwick and Portlandia stars Armisen and Brownstein; a

discussion with the crew behind Mystery Science Theater 3000 led

by Wil Wheaton; a Mad Decentsponsored dance music tent; standup sets by Demetri Martin, Michael Che, Garfunkel & Oates and Nikki Glaser; plus live music from Weezer, TV On The Radio, OK Go and Animal Collective.

While the ID10T lineup may reflect Hardwick’s personal popcultural tastes, he says he hopes many will find the collection of events as exciting as he does.

Furthermore, he hopes those who come will discover that they have many more friends interested in the same diverse array of entertainers.

“As corny as it sounds, the festival is such a part of my soul that I really hope people like it,” Hardwick says— going on to say he wants attendees to feel connected with the festival and to each other. To say, in essence: “Hey! We all like this stuff.”

It wasn’t that long ago that it might have been difficult for a single person to say they had any depth of knowledge of all three worlds represented at ID10T. But now—because of the internet—it’s far more common to find people who are interested in a wide swath of the pop culture landscape.

“In a pre-internet era it was about access and time,” Hardwick observes.

“If you wanted to be just a music nerd, a lot of your time and energy was consumed with just tracking it down.” Of course, that’s all changed.

“The internet makes everything available to us,” he says. “It’s economized our pop culture consumption”—mainly by helping turn us all on to things we might not have otherwise encountered.

Hardwick says that this can be a bit sad. The hunt for the obscure has always been a part of the geeking out process. “But at the same time it’s allowed us to become fans of a lot of different things. I think that’s what the festival represents.”

San Jose’s Leer say goodbye.

Leer to Play Final Show THIS WEEK, THE beloved San Jose band Leer play their final show, not in San Jose, but six hours away in Pomona. Why? “A lot of people like us in the general Pomona-SoCal area, maybe more so than the Bay Area at times,” says Dan Vo, Leer’s guitarist and primary songwriter.

He’s not wrong. Though they’re certainly loved locally, the first time Leer left San Jose to play in Southern California, they made a huge impression.

“I remember just being amazed by the energy of that show,” says Carina Taylor, an illustrator/animator from Long Beach. “It was one of my first experiences with DIY. I didn’t even know at the time that Leer was from San Jose. I was just impressed by everyone who was at that show and was like, ‘Oh, this is why people care about music so much.’”

Matt Gomez, of Pomona-based emo-punk band Winter Break, remembers the show similarly. “I remember kind of a silence after they played. Everyone at the show had their jaw dropped, like ‘What did I just see?’”

San Jose bands have it rough, and few ever make it out of the South Bay to play for others, due to long drives, lack of local venues, and living in one of the most expensive housing markets in the country. But Leer proved the exception. Though they only released one full length, 2013’s Spring Break No Parents, Leer managed to rethink the tonal boundaries of screamo music by largely playing in major keys, and incorporating a slew of Japanese influences. They toured often and even released a split with Tokyo rockers PENS+, bringing them on their first ever American tour.

And listeners took note.

“I saw people on message boards and shit talking about them in like Texas, East Coast,” says Shannon Taylor, a San Jose musician known for her bands Bread Club and Jr. Adelberg. She describes Leer’s album release show as “one of the most amazing shows I’ve ever been to in my entire life.”

I have a close friend whose relationships always end badly. The new guy she’s dating has a reputation as a user. My friend’s very successful, and I believe he’s dating her for her business contacts. I need to be honest with her about this. How should I do that—considering she falls in love hard and fast?—Caring Amiga People will insist that they absolutely want you to be honest with them when they’re doing anything stupid—and then immediately reward you for it by exiling you from Western society to live and herd goats with a Bedouin family.

Yes, even well-intentioned honesty is often counterproductive. This might be hard for you to swallow, considering how warning your friend about this guy probably seems like warning her that she’s about to be hit by a bus. And sure, if that were the case, upon your “YO! WATCH OUT!” she’d whirl around and leap out of the way—not stand her ground and snap: “You dunno what you’re talking about. Buses love me!”

Though it’s hard to deny the existence of a 24-ton object hurtling toward us, seeing things accurately is not always the first order of the human perceptual system. In fact, evolutionary psychologist Martie Haselton explains that we seem to have evolved to make the least costly perceptual error in a situation—a subconscious calculation that sometimes leads to our overperceiving or under-perceiving risks or opportunities. For example, in the physical risk domain, we are

predisposed to over-perceive that stick in the rustling leaves as a snake because it’s far more costly to die from a snake bite than to “die” of embarrassment when our peeps mock us for jumping out of our skin at a sinister-looking twig.

In relationships, social psychologist Garth Fletcher and his colleagues find that it’s sometimes in our interest to err on the side of “positivity”—the rosy view—over “accuracy.” (Love is blind versus love gets Lasik!) Whether positivity or accuracy is active is contextdependent, meaning it’s determined by our situation. So, for example, when you’re in no rush to settle down, positivity vision prevails.

Unfortunately, your even hinting that this guy may have ulterior motives is likely to make your friend snarlingly defensive, which is to say she may end up throwing somebody out of her life, and it probably won’t be him. Of course, it’s possible that you’re wrong about the guy. Regardless, per the Fletcher team’s finding, your friend’s being able to see anything beyond how dreamypants he is may be driven by context—like when maintaining the rosy view would prove fatal to her achieving some essential goal.

I’m a single guy, and I just never know how to start conversations with girls. I have a sense of humor, but I’m bad at coming up with funny lines on the fly. I’ve thought of using a “line,” but if I were a girl, hearing one would just make me annoyed. Do you have any advice on good conversation starters?—Speechless There’s a reason the line from that chick flick is “You had me at hello” and not “You had me at ‘Those jugs yours?’”

Granted, it’s better if you can be funny when hitting on girls.

Evolutionary psychologist Geoffrey Miller believes “humor production ability” is a “hard-to-fake” sign of intelligence in a potential partner.

Research by Miller and others suggests he’s right about finding correlations between humor and “verbal creativity” and intelligence. But note “hard-to-fake.”

Trying to be funny when you aren’t all that funny is about as successful a tactic as trying to remove someone’s appendix when you aren’t really a doctor.

However, even if you aren’t naturally funny, what you can be is genuine. To do this, just say something—perhaps about something in the environment.

Ask about that book she’s carrying or whether she’s survived the vegan Reuben. Maybe comment on the attire of the two armed men running out of the place with a bag of money.

Just saying something is basically like opening a tiny door to see whether anything’s behind it. If a woman finds you attractive, she’ll pick up and respond—and probably not by announcing that if you were the last man on earth, she’d develop a sexual attraction to trees.

STACKS ON STACKS Recycle Bookstore has had several homes, but the one constant has always been the vast, eclectic selection of used books.

An ode to nomadic Recycle Bookstore on its unlikely 50th anniversary

OLDEN ANNIVERSARIES have been in the news these days, so allow me to shout from the mountaintop—or at least a street corner—about Recycle Bookstore on The Alameda.

With 3,800 square feet of used books on shelves, floors, carts and boxes, the place always seems to provide a diverse literary experience.

For the last 19 years, proprietor Eric Johnson has owned and operated the store, but when Joan and Pat Hayes first started the original business in

1967, they probably had no idea it would still exist 50 years later.

Initially opening on South First Street, Recycle then moved to a location on San Fernando, where it became known for a distinguished and legendary basement. Old-timers still talk about that basement. Following the San Fernando location, the store eventually settled on Santa Clara Street for about 20 years, in the building now occupied by 2nd Story Bakeshop and Hibiscus Studio. By 1998, the store had begun to stagnate. The stock wasn’t rotating like it used to and Joan Hayes began looking for a new buyer. Johnson took over the business in October of that year, but he couldn’t hammer out a reasonable lease with the new landlord, so he found a new location on The Alameda, where the store sits to this day. Both Hayes

and the city of San Jose backed the loan enabling Johnson to make it work.

“The city took a chance on me,” Johnson says. “I don’t know why, but they did. They really wanted to keep the bookstore in San Jose.”

For me personally, I spent years patronizing the Santa Clara Street location, beginning in my teens, when I’d take the bus downtown to hit up Twice Read Books, Recycle and the comic shops and record stores that dotted the gritty landscape. Recycle’s Santa Clara Street location was an amazing store. You’d see college students, professors, punks, drunks, scholars and everyone between. Like any great used bookstore, browsing became an adventurous expedition akin to enlightenment. One didn’t need a destination, a goal, or anything to achieve. The path, the browsing, the journey itself was the destination.

By the time Johnson came along and relocated the store, I was just happy the place wasn’t closing.

job has required regularly clearing out parts of entire sections and divesting specific subsections that no longer sell. He always pays attention to what customers are looking for and then adapts. By listening to what readers are asking about, by focusing on what customers are actually buying, the store remains fresh. Recycle’s online presence is also substantial, increasing from 15 percent of the business many years ago to about 35 percent nowadays.

The results are noticeable. If one prowls around the store on a regular or even semi-regular basis, parts of the stock always seem to evolve, almost like an organism ejecting unnecessary ingredients and rejuvenating itself to survive.

There could be a slew of antiquarian travel books showing up one month, or there might be an entire cart of sheet music lurking in the corner.

Piles and piles of recently acquired European history books might sit on the floor for several weeks, while an enlarged Buddhism section could appear a few months later.

“It keeps the store a vibrant, moving, dynamic place where people are always going to see something different,” Johnson says. “And that’s always going to be the draw. Because once you start to get static, you’re not going to last very long.”

Being a used bookstore with a low overhead, Recycle was never supposed to function as a full-blown cultural hub like Kepler’s, Printers Inc., or City Lights. It’s a more simple business model that attracts everyone from the upper crust to the dirges of local literati.

“What I’m probably most proud of is the fact that we really don’t even think about demographics,” Johnson says. “I see all of San Jose come into this store. You get the suits coming in, you get the young kids, the hipsters, old people, all ethnicities. When I think of representing San Jose, I’m really happy that everybody is comfortable in that store, no matter what your demographic is. And that’s pretty darn cool.”

New research finds high-salt diets have unexpected health benefits

T’S ONE THING to know salt makes food taste better. It's another to understand that every single bite of food, from oatmeal to steak, is a culinary opportunity to be optimized with the right amount of salt. There isn't really any other food or flavor enhancer about which one could say that.

This isn't to say that salt must always be added, because some food contains its own. But in the absence of salt, food would be relatively

bland. Salt doesn't as much change or add flavor as make food taste more like itself. A tomato tastes more vivid. Corn is not only sweeter but also more complex. Meat tastes richer and juicier.

When all one can taste is salt, on the other hand, something is wrong. Too much salt can obscure the flavor of the food. In the case of ingredients that are, in one way or another, inadequate, salt helps pick up the slack.

Restaurant and processed foods are usually salted to the hilt, but all too often, home-cooked meals end up under-salted. This is not just a rookie move. Experienced cooks are guilty of this. I've been scolded for it myself, in fact, more times than I should admit in public.

As with most primary flavors, like acid, umami, sour or bitter, I'm usually looking to layer my salts in various forms, using the likes of capers, cheese, anchovies, soy or fish sauce, to name a few. These add a wealth of flavors in addition to that salty sodium.

I’m fortunate to not have high blood pressure, so my thoughts on salt are all about flavor, taste and culinary success. For those with healthy blood pressure, evidence is mounting that there is no correlation between sodium intake and cardiovascular disease or stroke.

This case has been pretty solid since about 2011, and support for it keeps growing. Nonetheless, organizations like the American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association are still pushing for lower salt intake across the entire population.

Meanwhile, some recent studies have presented compelling evidence that other fundamental assumptions about salt are wrong as well. A team of cosmonauts, kept in isolation

For those with healthy blood pressure, evidence is mounting that there is no correlation between sodium intake and cardiovascular disease or stroke It was expected that more dietary salt would compel the cosmonauts to drink more water, in order to dilute the extra salt and stabilize their salt levels. Instead the crew drank less water and without the extra water, their blood sodium levels remained steady.

The researchers, based in the U.S., Germany and Russia, eventually realized that the cosmonauts were diluting the extra sodium by producing their own water by burning fat. The process is identical to what a camel does in the absence of drinking water; ts hump is full of fat, which breaks down to water when the animal is dehydrated. The cosmonaut study was followed up by a mouse study that found mice on a high-salt diet had to eat 25 percent more to maintain their weight.

While this study didn’t investigate whether we eat too much salt, evidence continues to grow that people without high blood pressure don’t need to watch their salt intake, and can season as they wish.

Paradise in a Bowl

HIDDEN OASIS welcomes guests with views of giant lakes, a forest of green, red and orange leaves. Up above, colorful butterflies hover. As the angels sing, a light shines down on the golden fish lying behind the glass. Poke Paradise clearly has higher aspirations than simply slinging bowls of protein and veggies.

“The relaxing views of lakes and forest is somewhere to get away and just enjoy poke,” owner Kim Tran says. “I wanted to bring a healthy option to the area, and I am a poke lover. I was going out to eat poke all the time, but something was always missing.”

With prices starting at $11 a bowl, the two-month-old restaurant on Saratoga Avenue in San Jose has a commitment to fresh food and a fresh environment. Everything is raw, just the way it should be.

There are four proteins to choose from with three scoops included in every order. Octopus, yellowtail, tuna and salmon are protein options and, like most poke spots, there is an additional spicy or house sauce mixed with tuna and salmon.

The restaurant not only has all the essential toppings like masago, seaweed salad and green onions, but also complements bowls with crunchy pork skin, or chicharrones. The pork skins are salty and crunchy, adding a savory garnish.

Custom drinks ($5) include Coconut Eruption, Strawberry Bubbling and Watermelon Bubbling. The latter two contain fresh chunks of fruit to give the beverage more texture and a tantalizing taste. On this visit the restaurant served complimentary samples, which we happily consumed in addition to ordering the delicious coconut drink. Dry ice is used to give the drink a magical, misty eruption. Served with a straw leaning casually inside the threaded fruit, the coconut water was sweet, refreshing and savory—and perhaps addicting. Tran jokes that she flies all the way to Hawaii to cut them down and bring them back herself.

It was quite a bit for one person to finish, especially when paired with a bowl of poke. It dawned on me I would have little chance of winning the Poke Paradise challenge, where the restaurant serves a bowl 10 times larger than the standard size.

Joey Chestnut, the longtime national hot-dog-eating champion and San Jose native who is currently ranked No. 1 by the Major League of Eating, is the only person to win the bowl challenge thus far, taking home $100, a free T-shirt and a free $60 poke bowl.
