Last week, a judge ruled that a lawsuit could continue to trial against the superintendent and the Santa Clara County Office of Education (SCCOE), which oversees 31 school districts in the South Bay. MICAELA OCHOA, the former chief business officer for the SCCOE, accuses Gundry of wrongful termination and retaliating against her and others after they refused to help him break the law. In one instance, Ochoa says, Gundry tried to get staff to misreport his moving expenses to the IRS so he could avoid paying taxes. On another occasion, Ochoa informed the superintendent that he and his communications director, KEN BLACKSTONE, were not complying with the Public Records Act by hiding consulting contracts requested by Metro.

In that instance, Gundry was found to be signing secret deals just a dollar under the $100,000 threshold that requires him to They inform the elected Did board of trustees. It What? gets worse. MARIBEL MEDINA, formerly the SCCOE’s top attorney, also filed a lawsuit against the SCCOE and the superintendent after being fired by Gundry in 2015. In her deposition, Medina said that the superintendent told her to answer him by saying, “Si, señor.” In response, Medina reportedly accused of him of treating her like a Mexican day laborer instead of an attorney. The SCCOE board will have to decide if it wants to settle the lawsuits or go to trial, but trustees could be closing in on another big decision. The board has been evaluating Gundry’s job performance in closed session since midJanuary. Blackstone has already received his walking papers. His last day is June 30.

Exclusive: Milpitas City Manager Made More Suspicious Expenses

BY JENNIFER WADSWORTH MILPITAS CITY manager Tom Williams remains on paid leave as auditors investigate allegations that he spent public money on personal legal fees. But records obtained by Metro indicate that the $37,000 he charged to taxpayers this past April wasn’t the first time he misused city funds or signed off on questionable expenses.

A review of hundreds of pages of contracts found that Williams once hired a private eye to spy on a firefighter he suspected of faking an injury. But the $13,500 bill to hire investigator Ed Piggins was all for naught. The firefighter—veteran city employee Melvin Vaughn—suffered from legitimate back problems that required surgery. Vaughn sued the city, which shelled out $122,000 to settle the case in 2013.

Another expense that’s raised eyebrows at City Hall is a $10,000-a-month contract with Forest

Consulting, a lobbying firm run by Rich De La Rosa. The contract, which cost the city at least $80,000 from 2015 to last year, described consulting services in unusually vague terms: “government affairs, analysis, strategic planning services and public communications.”

Several sources who spoke to Metro called the deal highly suspicious. Cities may hire lobbyists to advocate for local interests at the federal and state level, but it’s unclear why De La Rosa’s firm was needed if his responsibilities were strictly local. De La Rosa didn’t respond to a request for comment.

Neither did Williams’ attorney, Claire Cochran, or the city’s outsourced legal counsel, Chris Diaz, who first alleged Williams had broken the law.

What makes the legal expenses more problematic is that all of the charges stemmed from Williams’ own personal conflicts.

On April 7, 2015, the city manager

hired a Danville-based law firm—Gagen, McCoy, McMahon & Koss—to deal with a personnel complaint filed against him by the city’s former planning director, Steve McHarris. The contract—signed off by Williams’ secretary, Rachelle Currie—fell a dollar below Williams’ contract signing authority: $19,999.

It’s unclear if Williams reimbursed the city for the money he charged to defend himself against the McHarris complaint, which accused the city manager of hostility at work and unethical conduct with developers. Records also show that a month later, in May 2015, the City Council upped Williams’ contract authority to $100,000. When Williams hired Ad Astra Law Group for $37,000 this year to send a cease-and-desist letter to Mayor Rich Tran and sue the city, Metro and the Milpitas Post, the council had no idea.

It wasn’t until Metro published that letter with the name of the law firm that auditors realized Ad Astra was hired to deal with Williams’ private legal conflicts.

The city’s attorney warned Williams that the charge—even if it was reimbursed— constituted a violation of city policy and could lead to felony charges. The District Attorney's Office has confirmed it is monitoring the situation.

Rep. Khanna Pushes Law that Would Tax Cheap Employers A Silicon Valley lawmaker wants to tax corporations that pay workers so little that they rely on public subsidies to scrape by. The bill introduced by Rep. Ro Khanna would make large companies foot the bill for the cost of food stamps and housing vouchers their employees need to make ends meet.

Khanna cites a 2015 study by the University of California, Berkeley, Labor Center, which calculated the high cost of low wages. Researchers

found that low-wage workers in the U.S. cost the taxpayers about $153 billion a year in government help.

By paying the legal minimum and keeping people on part-time schedules, McDonald’s and its ilk force workers to rely on public assistance.

In Silicon Valley the minimum wage is higher and on track to $15 an hour. But the cost of living is so high that even six-figure salary earners struggle to get by.

After three-plus decades of miscues, San Jose has a chance to transform itself—will it seize the moment?

AS SAN JOSE’S moment arrived? Two years ago, Mountain View rebuffed Google’s bid to massively expand its headquarters. A few months later, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to take up San Jose’s long-shot bid to scuttle Major League Baseball’s federal antitrust exemption and allow the Oakland A’s to relocate to land across from SAP Center.

The 2015 rejections created a match made in commercial real estate heaven for both spurned suitors, who are now negotiating a deal to bring Google to downtown San Jose.

Instead of snagging a moneysucking professional sports franchise, San Jose redeployed the assembled parcels for a corporate citizen that could transform the city. Google can afford to buy the land, finance its own building, contribute badly needed tax revenue and create high-wage employment. Northern California’s largest city provides Google a way to escape traffic nightmares and a housing crisis as it

rockets to a trillion dollar valuation.

Meanwhile, the company’s parent, Alphabet Inc., is dabbling in a host of futuristic “moonshot” ventures that include robotics, driverless cars and flying vehicles.

destination and Sunnyvale turned into a residential hot spot for million dollar-plus homes.

Optimists knew the wave would head south and San Jose would be caught up in the swell. The peninsula became too expensive, crowded and wary of hypergrowth, and San Francisco’s boom has become an angry mess of gentrification-sparked class warfare and culture shifts.

San Jose’s downtown, at the same time, is coming into its own, with an expanding roster of millennialfriendly coffee shops, craft cocktail bars and microbreweries. The ugly tan ’80s-era buildings that dominate the flat-topped skyline have been dressed up with LED mood lighting and murals. Even pedestrian crosswalks are being turned into painted art pieces in a desperate bid to add some color.

In downtown’s shadow, across the meek Guadalupe River, lies a district dominated by auto body shops and other light industrial uses, agricultural era galvanized roofs, neighborhood markets, working class bars, a sausage factory sign and weed-lined parking lots with circular skid marks.

That all can change.

Mountain View used to be a dump, literally. The Google campus and Shoreline Amphitheatre are built on landfill. Its now-trendy downtown used to be filled with low-budget restaurants and dated retail.

Google’s arrival will help San Jose’s jobs-housing imbalance, a phenomenon that has left the city with some of the valley’s worst parks, schools and roads and a hollowedout police force.

For years, San Jose has provided housing for lucrative job growth in other cities, which captured tax revenues and upgraded amenities for their residents while San Jose lagged. Neighboring Santa Clara last year brushed off a nearly unanimous chorus of critics and plowed ahead with plans to build the 9 million-square-foot CityPlace Santa Clara adjacent to Levi’s stadium, which will create 24,760 jobs while only adding 1,360 residential units.

San Jose grew by nearly 10,000 residents in the past

year—the biggest jump in Northern California. It can easily accommodate a campus of 20,000, which will represent less than 5 percent of the city’s jobs. Other cities are looking to go the opposite way and cool down job growth to preserve their communities. “We’re looking to increase the rate of housing growth, but decrease the rate of job growth,” Palo Alto Mayor Patrick Burt said last year.

With a robust transit infrastructure, Googlers can commute in from San Francisco, the South Valley or the Peninsula on an electrified Caltrain, and Fresno may soon be a 50-minute high-speed rail ride away.

Google made a smart decision— maybe the only decision it could make. San Jose is a behemoth, with land, housing, urban culture, rail lines and an international airport.

It has a major city’s infrastructure and can support the ambitions of an expanding global technology leader.

Apple and Facebook now hold major conferences here instead of in San Francisco, and the cool factor seems to be taking hold.

Hopefully Google will see fit to plan a true urban campus that embraces the downtown and the community around it rather than one that seals its employees in a hermetic bubble with free food and ridiculous perks. Companies historically perform better in urban environments, and Google may benefit from a socially connected workforce as it tackles a transforming world.

We can debate the essential unfairness about displacing familyowned small businesses to make way for one of the world’s richest corporations. However, if the city can see fit to incentivize development, it can sprinkle a little love the other way—and it should, in the form of relocation assistance.

A smart agreement will avoid giving away the store with tax breaks, but it shouldn’t load the deal with labor carve-outs and red tape, things that drive up building costs and delay realization. San Jose should move fast to make this happen. Conditions can change quickly, and decades from now we don’t want to be talking about the one that got away.

Waiting to Exile?

Proposed Googleplex has San Jose officials seeing dollar signs while residents, local businesses suspect the end is nigh

DGAR SALCEDO, the 56-year-old owner of Ed’s Scientific Auto Body, has faced the prospect of displacement three times since he took over his dad’s business.

In the early 1990s, the colossal arena that later became the SAP Center

gobbled up several of his neighbors— mechanics, welders, mom-and-pop service shops—in one of the remaining industrial wards of downtown San Jose. Years later, the regional transit authority claimed swaths of South Autumn and Montgomery streets to make way for a new light rail line.

So when investors recently began quietly snapping up parcels near Salcedo’s car repair shop two blocks east of Diridon train station, Salcedo

felt a familiar unease. Then a man in a suit came calling, asking landlords and commercial tenants in the vicinity if they’d consider relocating.

“I told him, ‘No, no, no,’” Salcedo says, motioning as though waving the suit away. “I’ve told them before and told them again.”

But the second-generation business owner may not have a choice this time. Last week, the city announced the company behind the recent flurry of land buys: Google.

“I like that San Jose is growing,” Salcedo says. “It’s going to be changing—I know that. But I’m worried about what that means for my business and the people who work for me. I don’t know if we can survive a move.”

Easy Does It Google would radically change the

landscape of downtown San Jose. The Mountain View-headquartered search giant, which plans to enter into formal negotiations with the city this month, says it wants to build up to 8 million square feet of office and research space on 245 acres near the Diridon Caltrain station. If and when Google gets built out, which is expected to take about a decade, that would just about double the size of downtown’s office volume.

All told, the project will accommodate up to 20,000 employees and thousands of new homes on land the city had long reserved for a new ballpark and the Oakland A’s.

The proposed development is a major coup for Mayor Sam Liccardo, who breathlessly welcomes the prospect of the tech giant settling into the heart the nation’s 10th largest city. Business boosters and city leaders have mused how the self-

“This gives us an opportunity to reimagine how Silicon Valley should build,” Liccardo says. “We’ve emerged from several decades of tilt-up campuses built in a suburban environment in a sea of parking, and what Google is looking to create is consistent with our city’s vision for how you build dense and vibrant villages.”

Scott Knies, president of San Jose’s Downtown Association, says he has high hopes that Google will be a good neighbor by supporting existing businesses. Unlike Apple’s so-called spaceship in Cupertino, which is structurally isolated from the city around it, Google says it wants to keep its presence in San Jose accessible to the public. It has apparently also prompted the city to revisit the discussion about raising allowable building heights, which are partially constrained by federal limits because of the nearby airport.

But there’s some leeway that Knies and city officials say could open up

potentially millions more square feet to future development..

“The west side of downtown is really this Wild West of opportunity to develop a spectacular neighborhood on the doorstep of this big transit center,” Knies says.

“It is forward-thinking in every manner, in its architecture and affordability, its environmental impact, with the creek that goes right through the middle of it. Then you’ve got the ability to have these public spaces. From an urbanist point of view, that is exactly what we need in downtown.”

It’s an ambitious outlook, but one that eludes the reality on the ground. Namely, that people already live and work in the shadow of the planned development.

Patty’s Inn, Kearney Pattern Works and Foundry, C&C Architectural Glass and a host of light-industrial momand-pop establishments now face the prospect of being uprooted. Poor House Bistro, a New Orleans-themed blues venue and restaurant that owner Jay Meduri converted from his parents’

more lucrative business like fancy coffee shops and high-end boutiques.

“Gentrification involves revitalization that doesn't serve the old population. It's when the changes push people out or destroy what made a community work. ” The result, Ford adds, is that people begin to feel like strangers in their own neighborhoods.

Despite Silicon Valley’s liberal bent, policies that could help low-income residents have been considerably weaker than the influx of private capital that consumes entire neighborhoods. Like the rest of the region, San Jose has fallen woefully short of its goals for affordable housing production—just 13 percent of its projected need, according to regional planning agencies. The city banned no-cause residential evictions only this past April and lowered the rent control cap from 8 to 5 percent in 2016.

Yet even then, state policies limit the effectiveness of local displacement controls by limiting them to old housing stock. In 2011, the state Legislature also shut down redevelopment agencies, which used to generate a steady stream of affordable housing funds. Meanwhile, no such antidisplacement measures exist for local businesses at all, which are at high risk of having to move or shut down entirely.

Denizens of the Diridon area also take issue with how they found out about Google’s arrival. Rocio Salcedo—who runs Diamond Auto Detail next door to her brother Ed’s auto body shop—says she didn’t hear about Google’s intentions until she read about it in the newspaper.

“I’m an immigrant, I’m a business owner who pays taxes and contributes to this community,” she says. “The city should acknowledge that we’re here.”

Several city officials who spoke with Metro dismissed the notion that Google would squeeze people out. The city will negotiate the sale of 16 publicly owned parcels, according to the city, including sweeping surface parking lots and a training complex for firefighters.

Other than that, the mayor assures, no rent-controlled apartments are at risk and no businesses lease the city-owned land in question.

house, is another cultural landmark that lies in the path of new development.

“Google will kick us out of here,” Salcedo says. “It’s a matter of time.”

Residential tenants share those concerns. They worry that the project will drive up housing costs in a region that already claims the dubious distinction of being one of the nation’s most expensive places to live. As San Jose becomes a destination for bigger, richer corporations, the displacement of longtime inhabitants and longstanding businesses continues to outpace any attempts at protecting or creating economical housing in the city. Seeing how the affordability crisis transfigured San Francisco and now Oakland, it’s understandable why people are getting defensive about Google’s planned move.

Of course, problems that plague San Jose and the rest of the region are far more abstruse than a Google complex. But the company’s economic clout should prompt serious discussion about how the city can mediate private interests and the public good, Councilman Don Rocha suggests.

“This is a great win for San Jose,” he says. “We’ve been pushing for signature projects for office and corporate development, and this might be our opportunity to finally get one. But while this strong economy is a blessing, it can also be a bit of a curse.”

Researchers who study gentrification in the Bay Area say one of the problems with the relentless pace of urban development is that it makes cities too dependent on the private sector. State policies that limit property tax revenue have forced local governments into prioritizing jobs over housing, as corporations generate more revenue for infrastructure and vital city services. The result is privately funded neighborhood revitalization— gentrification by another name— which is inherently less egalitarian than public investment.

“The neighborhoods are improved in terms of physical development and infrastructure, but the old residents are often pushed out by rising rents, and the character of the neighborhoods change,” Stanford University law professor Rich Ford says. “Small business that serve the average person—laundromats and corner stores—are replaced with

“As far as I know, the only revered occupant who’s being displaced by Google’s arrival is the dancing pig on the Stephen’s Meat sign,” Liccardo tells Metro, referring to the iconic midcentury marquee across from Patty’s Inn on Montgomery Street. “And we will find affordable housing for it.”

The Salcedos and others who rent from warehouse owners in the area apparently have fewer resources at their disposal than the cartoon pig. Public agencies are only legally obligated to compensate people displaced from government-owned property. Tenants of private property owners, however, might receive zero help.

Deeper the Roots Google’s proposition is undoubtedly a boon for developers who stand to profit and public agencies that stand to rake in more revenue. Nanci Klein, San Jose’s deputy director of economic development, says that by locating a massive employment center close to the most trafficked public transit hub west of the Mississippi, Google

can help the region meets its goals of reducing traffic congestion.

Another selling point: the proposed Googleplex could also help San Jose bring its employmenthousing ratio in line with neighboring cities.

For years, the city of a million has remained the single largest bedroom community in the United States, with far fewer jobs than working residents.

“That San Jose has less than one job per employed resident while our surrounding communities have three or more jobs for every employed resident is incredibly detrimental to us,” Klein says. “The balance is just so starkly different because we’re building housing for all those other cities. This is a chance to tip the scale. Our residents are very hungry to be able to work closer to where they live.”

Google’s grand but incipient vision for downtown seems to complement San Jose’s Diridon Station Area Plan, which the city adopted in 2014. The downtown specific blueprint calls for significant infill that overlaps

with two planned “urban villages”— essentially clusters of housing near jobs and linked by public transit. The Association of Bay Area Governments and the Metropolitan Transportation Commission—well-funded regional planning agencies—require cities to adopt “smart growth” plans, also called urban infill, as a way to prevent more suburban sprawl. But the strategies largely fail to account for displacement.

After years of gradually translating that vision into reality, the area around Diridon station is shaping into an upscale urban hamlet. A 2015 report by the University of California, Berkeley’s Urban Displacement Project called the Diridon area one of the most susceptible in the Bay Area to displacement.

Development in the 1980s pushed out low-income families and galvanized the neighborhood for today’s explosive growth, according to the report’s authors, Karen Chapple and Miriam Zuk. When the Diridon Station Area plan was announced three years ago, activists renewed the call for affordable housing, which the city funds by charging developers two

separate fees to make sure that 15 percent of all new housing remains affordable to low-wage earners.

Before the city adopted the lofty plan, Councilman Rocha and others pushed for anti-displacement strategies.

“I am mindful that while high-tech clusters and impressive architecture may be necessary components for a great city, they are not the only components,” Rocha wrote in a 2014 memo urging his colleagues to at least give some teeth to the affordable housing component. “An iconic station building will need janitors to clean the floors. Knowledge workers will need teachers to educate their kids. An entertainment zone needs waiters and a stadium needs ushers.

The stations and stadiums, the prestigious tech companies—all will rely, at least in part, on the labor of people who do unglamorous work for modest pay and spend a good portion of their income on just getting by. I believe there should be some consideration in our plan for them.”

The recommendations Rocha made were ultimately adopted, but he believes more policy tools could and should be available. Last year, the second-term councilman pushed for a commercial linkage fee, which would have accrued more money for belowmarket-rate housing. Mayor Liccardo rejected the proposal and the council declined to even study the possibility.

“To not even act at all was, in my view, a major, major failure,” Rocha says.

“These are examples of opportunities lost that could have been available to us as we work with Google.”

Professor Ford says cities grappling with displacement can protect businesses with deep roots in the community by securing long-term leases or partnering with nonprofits to keep their costs down. Knies, the downtown association chief, says that bigger tech companies can do their part by subcontracting with local businesses.

“We’re in a position to make Google compensate the public for their impact,” says Sandy Perry, head of the grassroots Affordable Housing Network of Silicon Valley. “We need to make sure that they buy into their end of the social contract.”

Liccardo says he’ll make sure Google pays its fair share.

“We’re not cutting them any deals,” the mayor says.

The terrific ‘Toxic Avenger’ has good, dirty fun with cult film

AN JOSE STAGE Company’s newest summer musical is a campy, crude and surreal romance set in the concrete swamps of The Garden State.

Written by Joe DiPietro, The Toxic Avenger, is a musical adapted from the 1984 film of the same name.

Originally released to a quiet response, the production’s clever writing and obsessive fans helped propel this bloody B-movie into cult classic status, spawning a litany of adaptations.

Now taken on by San Jose Stage Company, The Toxic Avenger opens to

a spare stage, punctuated by barrels overflowing with radioactive green waste behind a large screen filled with a pixelated image of a trash heap—all the comfortable trappings of a toxic dump.

The set shares the stage with a live band.

The players sit to the side of the screen, which flashes images from the blighted town Tromaville, New Jersey.

Enter Melvin, a victimized nerd who is in love with the town’s librarian Sarah—who just so happens to be blind.

When Melvin isn't anxiously trying to capture Sarah’s attention, he’s being beaten up by the town bullies. In an effort to fully win Sarah’s heart, Melvin steals the town records to find who owns the town’s awful dump.

Turns out it’s the equally awful mayor, who bribes Melvin before setting her goons on him. They try to kill him by dropping him into green slime—but

instead of liquefying, he transforms into the bulbous, green Toxic Avenger (Sarah affectionately calls him Toxie), eager still to win the librarian’s heart and to stop the evil in his town before it’s too late.

The musical is as charming as it is crass; its themes are caustically brought to life by the ensemble cast’s extraordinary performance. Will Springhorn Jr. as Melvin—and later as Toxie—is silly but endearing, and really comes into his own with the toxic transformation.

Sarah, played by Courtney Hatcher, plays equal parts sweet and sexy, with a killer voice to boot.

Branden Noel Thomas and Joshua Marx (listed in the playbook as Black Man and White Man respectively) deserve big credit for keeping consistent humor in their constantly changing duos, from bullies to scientists.

However the standout performance goes to Stage Company regular Allison F. Rich who plays a hysterical nun, the devious town mayor and Melvin/ Toxie’s hilariously caustic mother with impressive skill. At one point, playing two characters simultaneously, Rich

even sings a duet with herself. Working together in slapstick harmony, the cast keeps the audience on its toes.

What the Stage Company lacks in budget, it truly makes for in imagination. Instead of the movie’s large ensemble of meatheads that square off against Sarah and The Toxic Avenger, the Stage Company distills the story down to a small number of characters all played by the five-person cast, who kick and kvetch their way through a New Jersey state of mind. This structure could easily over-stretch the small cast, but it’s no obstacle for these actors.

If the music has a Bon Jovi-esque feel, then your spidey senses aren’t far off. Informed mostly by blues-rock, the soundtrack is a bit one-note but ultimately is saved by samba and noir diversions, as well as utilizing ’80’s rock hits for mashup-like songs. That and the live band—complete with saxophone—really brings home the New Jersey-ness of the show.

This musical adaptation is arguably quite different from the original story, cutting out the focus on fitness and the gym to explore Toxie and Sarah’s romantic relationship. Ludicrous blood and gore are minimized and a good number of villainous characters with a range of complexities are replaced with the mayor and her moronic goons.

These changes are negligible, however, in the face of the cast’s incredibly tight and hilarious performance.

And while the original story takes place in the ’80s—as reinforced by the tropey character types—the Stage’s adaptation throws in some jokes about the contemporary political climate.

The script even throws shade on Silicon Valley. Often these jokes don’t land on the same footing as the rest of the show, but a quick pace keeps these nonsequiturs from sticking out too much.

Beyond all other factors, what sells The Toxic Avenger is its comedic self-awareness and bawdy fun.

Add San Jose Stage Company’s characteristic imagination, and a witty, in-step cast, and you have a recipe for one of the most unique productions of the summer.

Documenting the Decay “Nothing gold can stay,” writes America’s quintessential modern poet. Nearly a quarter of the way through the 20th century, Robert Frost reflected on the inevitable tendency of time to override and replace former worlds with the new.

Several decades later, Gabriel Ibarra embarked on a photographic journey in the Bay Area, preserving landscapes and structures that have and continue to diminish in the exponentially hastening pace of life within the high-tech bubble of Silicon Valley.

His photo exhibit at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Library—titled “Three Decades of Photography”—comprises more than 60 images documenting various sites in San Jose, Santa Clara, Milpitas, Sunnyvale, Agnews and Bodie, a famous ghost town east of the Sierra Nevadas.

Three Decades of One photo features a plum orchard at Butcher’s Corner, Photography Sunnyvale’s last remaining working orchard. Taken earlier this year, the bright specks of yellow and white Thru Jul 31, Free flowers in bloom represent the suburb’s final claim on MLK Library, Santa Clara Valley’s nickname—The Valley of Heart’s San Jose Delight. While Ibarra enjoys revisiting the property to capture its beauty during different seasons, the daunting phrase, “last one,” is written in the photo’s caption. Plans to build 138 residential units on the land were approved by the city last winter.

Born at the tail end of the orchard era in 1956, the Bay Area native witnessed firsthand the drastic effects of urbanization in the South Bay. His ongoing photographic project strives to record what is still left of the world he was raised in—a world becoming increasingly unfamiliar today.

“Anywhere in the USA, any town, wherever you go, it’s the same thing,” Ibarra says. “You go to the same supermarkets. You go to a Target here and a Walmart there. We’re losing touch with our identity of uniqueness.”

Ibarra captures rundown buildings and storefronts in various stages of erasure. Whether it be the frozen clock sign of an auto repair shop or the still-glowing neon lights of a recently closed bowling alley, each photo represents a piece of local history bound to vanish from the landscape.

Through what he calls “Architectural Historical Photography,” Ibarra hopes to raise awareness about local properties on the brink. “People have to reframe what they do in their free time,” he says, noting the dangers of a generation so obsessed with social media updates that they become blind to their immediate community.—Camille Miller

Universal reboots ‘The Mummy’ but fails to unearth anything new

UPULA DUPLEX! The double-pupiled syndrome supposedly afflicting a Song dynasty Mandarin named Liu Chung is at last on screen. It’s a syndrome never seen in real life, unless the Ripley’s Believe it Or Not Wax Museum is counted as real life… as it should be, shouldn’t it? Sporting four golden pupils, Sofia Boutella’s revivified Princess Ahmanet gives Tom Cruise the “submit to me, big boy” stare in her title role as The Mummy.

If only they’d called this movie Zombie Princess Double-Eyeball, expectations would have been nicely lowered. The extremity of online complaints—worst Tom Cruise movie ever!—can be blamed on the would-be franchise building. The Mummy is a title to reckon with. This re-re-remake isn’t committed enough to be really bad; it’s filmed like too-polite Sam Raimi. Under Alex Kurtzman’s flavorless direction, almost every character is a pain: even the ornery good girl (Annabelle Wallis) seems to have fading hopes of her own importance to the plot.

The sacred ancient text The Mummy is based on is Tom Cruise Script A1: “The Menschification of Tom Cruise” in which our boy-man must learn to be nice to other people instead of just standing around grinning, amazed at his own naughty mischief.

Nick Morton (Cruise) and Chris Vail (Jake Johnson) are U.S. soldiers in Iraq, in business for themselves, doing a little archaeological looting.

After being shot at by some insurgents, Morton and Vail request an airstrike, and the drone’s bomb crater reveals a tomb. Inside is a MiddleKingdom princess who underwent what longtime Mummy fans know of as “The Nameless Death.” She was wrapped alive, tossed into a sarcophagus far from home in Mesopotamia and then soaked with mercury so she’d stay put. The bit about the mercury is odd, but it soon becomes clear: quicksilver crawls across the floor. This film is a fan of anything that crawls, camel spiders, scarab beetles, etc. Vail—killed early on—returns as a ghost to communicate his dread Egyptian mistress’ wishes to her intended Morton. This is business filched—unimproved—from An American Werewolf in London.

The military hauls this cursed mummy to a museum in London. There, Ahmanet gets out and goes on the town, sucking all the life out of passers-by. Trailing her is Dr. Henry

Jekyll (a not-bad Russell Crowe). As bearded, baleful and tweedy as Professor Quatermass, Jekyll is given to old Transylvanian proverbs, such as “The past… cannot remained buried forever.” The doctor, and his companion Hyde—copper-green of face, shiny like a fly’s abdomen—are heads of a secret organization that studies and captures monsters.

The lab abounds with teasers: a wolfman skull in a bell jar, a Black Lagoon creature’s paw in formaldehyde. Indeed, Universal Studios is planning a reboot of its famed “Monsters” series, rebranded as the “Dark Universe” franchise.

The 1990s Brendan Fraser movies are now the official Mummy of so many childhoods. Thus it’s probably a doomed effort to recall the 1932 Boris Karloff version, and far less to recall the 1960s Hammer remakes starring His Magnificence Christopher Lee. Back then Lee told interviewer John Brosnan that the original 1932 Mummy “certainly wasn’t a horror movie.” It was instead, a symbolist story with instances of outlandish terror, as when an explorer is driven mad by the sight of an ambulatory corpse: “He went out for a little walk!” Fiction writers of the 1800s created a few mummy’s curses in various prose works. The surprise discovery of Tutankhamen’s tomb in the 1920s, and the legends of the doom befalling the discoverers, gave a powerful charge to Karl Freund’s film.

There’s nothing similarly zeitgeisty in this version, despite the Iranian prologue. True, the dead princess seeking Morton is alluring in her diaphanous linens, in desert sunsetlit flashbacks. Boutelle is a grittier, smaller version of Claudia Cardinale.

But she never stays lovely enough to kindle some uncanny love. (She has one good line. Confronted with her act of parricide in ancient Egypt, Ahmanet excuses herself: “Those were different times.”) But Cruise doesn’t take the bait. Kurtzman prefers the kid fodder of zombies, rot and crazy double-irised eyeballs to romance.

And by the time of the final wirework fight, with Cruise and Boutelle throwing each other around the room, it’s all just another bent tent pole.

King Crimson ride the prog rock vanguard into Mountain Winery

A

FTER DECADES AS a successful touring musician and recording artist, Jakko Jakszyk is fronting the band he discovered in 1969, when he was 11 years old. The British guitarist and vocalist recalls the first time he heard King Crimson’s “21st Century Schizoid Man.”

“Even at that tender age, I could tell it was coming from a different place,” he says of the tune, sampled

by Kanye decades later. “All the other English underground music came out of the British blues boom and psychedelia; this came from somewhere else. It didn’t sound like

anyone else. It was riveting, it was scary, and it was virtuosic.”

Fast forward 44 years to 2013: Jakszyk has just joined the latest version of the groundbreaking progressive rock giants King Crimson.

Initially known among fans as “the seven-headed beast,” the lineup featured founder Robert Fripp plus six other stellar musicians, all of whom have been involved in Crimson-related lineups over the years. That configuration would change slightly in 2017 when (another) drummer was added—bringing the total to four percussionists. The “double quartet” kicked off its summer tour in Mexico City, with nearly two dozen concert dates including a June 15 performance at Saratoga’s Mountain Winery. “I’m assuming everyone thinks this might be the last hurrah,” Jakszyk says.

Longtime fans of the band’s musical twists and turns know that King Crimson has never rested on its reputation; most lineups have focused on new material, only occasionally digging into the group’s catalog to play older works. The band is mixing things up on this tour.

“We are embracing the music as a whole,” Jakszyk explains. “We are playing things that have not been played in decades, or that have never been played live, ever.” He goes on to mention some of the pieces that might be included in the set list, but cautions that it’s all left up to Fripp. “Every morning at about 11 o’clock we all get an email with that evening’s set list. And it’s different every day.”

And different is a hallmark of King Crimson. Over the course of its nearly half-century history, the band has trafficked in wildly varying musical styles. Anchored by guitarist Fripp— the sole constant among the group’s 13 studio albums and numerous tours—King Crimson helped create

progressive rock (1969’s In the Court of the Crimson King) and prog-metal (the landmark 1974 LP Red) while elsewhere exploring jazz (Lizard from 1970) and new wave (the band’s trilogy of early 1980s records). If there’s a constant in all of this, it’s an uncompromising commitment to musical innovation.

Still, “There’s a kind of harmonic approach,” Jakszyk believes, “something about the music which unifies it all. So there’s a continuity in that sense.”

Even within the often knotty arrangements of the band’s material, there remains room for improvisation.

With eight musicians onstage, allowing sonic space for each requires keen sensitivity. Jakszyk says that there is a “collective responsibility” among the band members to express themselves within the context of the music. “But there are no hard rules about that,” he says—smiling as he quotes loosely from former King Crimson drummer Bill Bruford: “King Crimson is the only band where you can regularly play in 15/8 and still stay in nice hotels.”

King Crimson doesn’t adhere to “industry standard” ideas about record releases; there hasn’t been a studio album of new music from the group since 2003. “We don’t live in that world any more,” explains Jakszyk, “where we’re signed to a record label, have to contractually produce an album by the end of November, and then tour it.” He allows that there is in fact plenty of new—and as yet unrecorded—King Crimson music.

“We’ve got 3 1/2 hours’ of repertoire, and of that I would say that there are 40 minutes of new material.”

Though he does not consider himself King Crimson’s leader, Robert Fripp is a famously demanding presence. He told The Telegraph’s Rob Hughes in 2014 that the group’s current lineup is the first in which he doesn’t “sense any animosity or resentment from at least one member in the band.” Jakszyk concurs. “I think [Fripp] ended up with a bunch of guys who enjoy being on the road,” he says. “And in my case, I’m absolutely amazed that I’m doing this at all.”

Tangled Up In Blues THE 36TH ANNUAL Fountain Blues Festival is just a week away. But for blues fanatics, there’s plenty more freeform jamming, harmonica solos and hard living to celebrate during “Blues Week,” which runs from this Sunday until the main event at Plaza de Cesar Chavez on June 24.

Bassist and producer Frank “Tebo” Thibeaux will be kicking everything off with a free show—Sun., June 18 at 2pm—at the San Pedro Square Market. He’ll be backed up by his band Tebo’s Howlin Wolf Revue, playing a combination of funky blues with a little zydeco thrown in for good measure.

Next up, vocalist and harpist John Németh will be celebrating the release of his new album Feelin’ Freaky with a release party at Poor House Bistro on Monday, June 19 at 7pm.

Those looking to get a taste of what’s to come at the festival proper can catch a sneak peek of Fountain Blues headliner and harmonica virtuoso Aki Kumar, who jams with his band at Poor House Bistro on Tuesday, June 20 at 5pm.

Blues lovers with a desire to learn how to play can get a crash course at Discovery Meadow on Wednesday at 8pm. June 21 is international Make Music Day and to celebrate, local musician and Fountain Blues Foundation board member Ned Craft will host a harmonica workshop. Kids are welcome.

Also on Wednesday, in Redwood City, British Blues Hall of Fame-inductee Matt Schofield and his band will be lighting up Club Fox with a good old-fashioned blues jam featuring Oakland blues and soul singer Terrie Odabi.

Chef Ramon will be hosting his annual Big Blues Week Jam at Poor House Bistro on Thursday starting at 6pm. It’s unclear which special guests Ramon has enlisted to play this year, but it’s safe to assume it’ll be a good time.

Jerry Miller, lead guitarist and founding member of Moby Grape, provides direct support to the festival with a Friday night pre-party at Poor House Bistro.

Right. Not exactly a first-date question: “So…did you get your boobs from your mom’s side of the family or from some doc’s Yelp review?”

Your aversion to counterfitties doesn’t come out of nowhere. Breast implants are a form of “strategic interference,” evolutionary psychologist David Buss’ term for when the mating strategies of one sex are derailed by the other.

Women, for example, evolved to seek “providers,” or men with high status and access to resources. A guy engages in strategic interference by impressing the ladies with his snazzy new Audi—one he pays for by subletting a “condo” that’s actually the backyard playhouse of the rotten 8-year-old next door.

A woman doesn’t need an Audi (or even a bus pass) to attract men. She just needs the features that men evolved to go all oglypants for—like youth, an hourglass bod, big eyes, full lips, and big bra puppies.

Men aren’t attracted to these features just becuz. Biological anthropologist Grazyna Jasienska finds that women with big

(natural!) boobs have higher levels of the hormone estradiol, a form of estrogen that increases a woman’s likelihood of conception. Women with both big boobs and a small waist have about 30 percent higher levels—which could mean they’d be about three times as likely to get pregnant as other women. So, big fake boobs are a form of mating forgery—like a box supposedly containing a high-def TV that actually contains a bunch of no-def bricks.

There are some telltale signs of Frankenboobs, like immunity from gravity. Women with big real boobs have bra straps that could double as seat belts and bra backs like those lumbar support belts worn by warehouse workers. However, an increasing number of women have more subtle implants (all the better to strategically interfere with you, my dear!). Though you might get the truth by teasing the subject of plastic surgery into conversation, you should accept the reality: You may not know till you get a woman horizontal.

This difference aligns with what evolutionary psychologist David Buss calls men’s and women’s conflicting “sexual strategies,” or how getting it on can leave a woman “with child” and a man with a little less semen. Accordingly, Buss finds that women are more likely to be “sexual deceivers” and dangle the possibility of sex to get a favor or special treatment from a man. Men, on

the other hand, are more likely to be “commitment deceivers.” In Buss’ lab, when the researchers asked 112 college dudes about whether they’d “exaggerated the depth of their feelings for a woman in order to have sex with her, 71 percent admitted to having done so, compared with only 39 percent of the women.”

Knowing the different ways men and women deceive and are prone to be deceived is the best way to avoid being a victim of that deception. Borrow a motto from Missouri, the Show Me State. And note that this “show me” thing takes time. Wait to have sex until you’ve been around a guy enough to see that he’s got something behind those flowery words—beyond how getting you into bed is preferable to staying home, dressing his penis in a tiny cape, and playing video games.

SiliGone Valley podcast documents region’s disappearing history

HRISTOPHER GARCIA is Silicon Valley’s hightech laureate of loss.

Everything from his youth is being destroyed by progress in the valley, so he decided to start talking to other people about their losses as well.

To a degree, Garcia is already a rogue historian of Silicon Valley’s vanishing past. By day he works as a curator at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View. On the side, he podcasts about wrestling

history and art history. But like many valley natives of his generation, Garcia began to realize that most of the memorable places and buildings from his youth have disappeared. So it was time for another podcast. One aptly titled SiliGone Valley.

For example, Garcia’s birthplace, the old Kaiser Hospital in Santa Clara, was demolished, and eventually supplanted with townhouses. The old Santa Clara City Library, where Garcia spent his youth in the children’s section, was likewise obliterated and replaced with a new library.

It doesn’t stop there. The site of Garcia’s first kiss? Gone. His first heartbreak? Gone.

He asks in his first-ever SiliGone Valley podcast: “How do we celebrate

Silicon Valley as anything more than where all of our apps come from?

And how do we make this place and its history mean something?”

The idea to start a new podcast came from a few different trajectories of influence. For one, Santana Row’s murdering of the Century Theaters brought back memories. On another front, Garcia says his mother also talks about how everything from her youth has been destroyed.

Garcia agreed to leak a few details as to what we’re going to hear during the first several podcasts, some of which will be online by the time you read this.

The Edge nightclub in Palo Alto, for example, was a rocking music venue.

Garcia has many memories there.

We’ll also hear interviews about the old Town and Country Village, where Santana Row now sits. The shopping center had long since deteriorated into a rundown scrappy relic, but many people have rocking stories, especially about the first Chuck E.

Relics Rekindled

For my non-native readers: You can’t tell the story of Silicon Valley without Pizza Time Theatre.

Frontier Village will be another topic. No matter what circle of people happen to be yakking about the creation and destruction of ideas, places and memories related to this valley, someone will eventually chime in about Frontier Village. This necessitates a podcast, Garcia says.

Following that lead, Lou’s Village, the legendary restaurant on San Carlos where Lucille Ball and countless others rolled in with their entourages for decades, will likewise get an episode.

Fifty years ago, Lou’s was at the forefront of old-school banquet-room social life, long before most restaurants thought about doing such things.

All of this is why I’m excited about Garcia’s podcast. He will cover the upmarket stuff and the lowbrow stuff.

You’ll hear about dive bars and luxury digs. Hotels and dumps. Punk rock and high tech. Exactly the mystical combination of opposing forces that has always defined and characterized Silicon Valley, at least from my perspective.

Thankfully, though, nostalgia wallowing is not the point here. Garcia is not trying to relive the past. Instead, he’s revisiting the past, knowing that Silicon Valley is a constantly changing place. He aims to celebrate the poignant slices of life that have been yanked away from us over time. ”I don’t want to be the guy screaming that everything was better yesterday,” Garcia says. ”What I’m hoping to do is get people’s reactions about what sites in Silicon Valley meant to them, and then get to the idea of what Silicon Valley means to people today. By getting people’s stories out of them, find out why they love certain things. Then we can really find the definition of what this place means.”

With a huge non-valley-native population, many people simply aren’t aware that anything ever happened here aside from the tech industry. What’s more, Garcia says, all of us can help. ”We are, right now, a location that has one definition, and that’s technology,” Garcia says. ”But there’s so much more here that gets subsumed into that one idea.”

Roaring to Go FINAL COUNTDOWN Once the city gives the go-ahead, Uproar Brewing Co. will become downtown San Jose’s newest beer bar and restaurant.

Uproar Brewing’s long-anticipated debut arrives in time for summer

UST A LITTLE ways out from Uproar Brewing Co.’s grand opening, the guys are getting a little annoyed with how often they have to turn away the local fire department. It’s not a fire code concern—the off duty firefighters are just looking for a cold one.

Uproar has been in the process of moving into the SoFA district downtown for a couple of years now, but the finish line is finally in sight.

Project manager Mike Cantere, who’s spent the past 14 months

cobbling the brewery together, understands the confusion.

“I mean, I spend an hour a day just sending people away,” Cantere says.

“They walk by, see the bar done and they just try to come in.”

It’s hard to blame the thirsty passersby. Everything is up and running, and from the sidewalk of South First Street it’s hard to miss the full bar and 15 taps that feature local craft beers. But the wheels of bureaucracy move at their own schedule, and the city has yet to give the brewery clearance to open.

That should change any day now, and brewmaster Jim Turturici has made sure Uproar will be ready. Every beer he’s selected to feature is made within a 50-mile radius. Once the city gives Uproar the go-ahead, those beers will be slowly replaced by the

brewing company’s own creations.

“A lot of it starting out is gonna be based on just covering a spectrum to appeal to a broad audience,” Turturici says. “And as we learn who’s drinking what, we’ll make some harder decisions.”

The menu will have beers that are always available, seasonal beers and unusual brews that the crew will invent as they experiment. Drinks, of course, are just one component of Uproar’s expected offerings.

Executive chef James Thornton has been devising a food menu that makes beer recommendations to pair with every dish. The menu will feature rack of lamb, cornish hen and goat cheese stuffed figs, to name a few dinner options. The lunch menu includes traditional pub grub like sliders and fries, but there’s also some unusual thin crust artisan pizzas, some of which will feature a “red beer sauce.”

“While [Turturici] is making a new brew he’s going to be giving me flavor profiles to work with, and we’re going

to be designing new dishes around those,” Thornton says.

The chef also notes that the kitchen will create the majority of food from scratch, with 40 percent of dishes also being made with beer or beer components.

Two types of bread will also be baked in house, both of which will contain grain used in the brewing process. A brunch menu will feature Belgian waffles made from the spent grain as well, topped with malt extract from the brewing process in lieu of maple syrup.

Uproar is in talks to incorporate a special menu featuring goods sold only at the upcoming farmers markets in the SoFA district.

But the beer will always be king, and Uproar will start out with a signature Saison while using the taproom to showcase the region’s talented craft brewers.

“We’re coming into a great community of breweries around here,” says Grant Kjos, Uproar’s taproom manager. “Any time that we’re gonna have free tap space, we want to be showcasing the other local stuff.”

Located in the building that formerly housed the ZERO1 Garage arts space, Uproar intends to blend into the fabric of the SoFA district, which continues to accumulate new food, drink and nightlife options.

“We just got in at the right time,” Cantere says. “Seems like everybody’s thirsty.”
