Bye, Old Friend
comments@metronews.com
A good friend introduced me to you nearly 25 years ago. At first you appeared like any other of your type, but what you had to say and how you said it stuck to me. When you left the gang and went on your own I grew closer. I admired your viewpoint and how you displayed it. I was sold completely. I followed you ever since, you've become part of my life. Only to wake up one recent morning to find you took yours. I was sad and confused, you seemed to be a normal guy, nice family, a career of careers. But then your wife said you had bouts of depression and took Ativan as a “solution.” She said the night you took your life you weren’t yourself, you were slurring. It wasn’t you. That makes sense. I’m sorry you had to go, but thank you for what you did for me and millions of others. Say Hello 2 Heaven for me, Mr. Cornell.

Johns and Does San Jose cops spent a few days undercover last month to bust on suspicion of buying and selling sex. The prostitution sting around Oak and South First streets resulted in criminal citations for 27 suspects—most of them “johns” and none suspected of human trafficking. SJPD then published their names, ages and cities of residence in addition to six women suspected of turning tricks. Like a growing number of police agencies throughout the country, SJPD is punishing sex workers and their so-called “johns” by outing them online. Critics of the shame game liken the practice to latter-day stocks, the medieval tool for public humiliation, and the internet to a public square. What makes the practice controversial to privacy advocates such as American Civil Liberties Union attorney LEE ROWLAND, however, is that the crime—an especially stigmatized one, at that—is merely alleged at this point. While law enforcement has a right to post mug shots and allegations along with the identities They of the suspects, Rowland Did cautions against the What? practice as a matter of SEND TIPS TO policy. Orange County FLY@ holds off on publishing METRONEWS. names of people busted COM for prostitution-related crimes until prosecutors secure a conviction. SJPD spokesman Sgt. ENRIQUE GARCIA tells Fly that the agency maintains the right to publish arrest information online as long as it doesn’t interfere with an ongoing investigation. “In this case, the department had received numerous complaints from the community regarding prostitution related activities in the area,” he says. Police have also fielded reports from that neighborhood about assaults, robberies and homicides— including one related to prostitution, Garcia said. San Jose PD publishes identifying details about people suspected of other nonviolent crimes, he adds, pointing to 11 press releases about people arrested on suspicion of sex crimes involving children and one about a San Jose officer arrested for allegedly pilfering weed.
Lost in the M8trix ACE IN THE HOLE Former Casino M8trix owner Eric Swallow and a potential buyer have accused state officials of breaking the law in forcing him to sell his stake in the card club.
Jilted Casino M8trix buyer cries foul over sale, state investigation BY JENNIFER WADSWORTH
W
HEN ERIC SWALLOW unveiled Casino M8trix, he billed it as a break from the past. San Jose’s history with its two card rooms had been marked by indictments, financial failures and regulatory battles. The real estate scion promised that the glittering tower forged from the bankrupt ruins of Garden City Casino would change the game. Measured in dollars, Casino M8trix has become a resounding success, raking in about $60 million a year in
gross revenue. But it quickly fell into the same patterns of conflict as its card club predecessor. In the five years since Swallow opened the seven-story gaming hall and a decade since he bought the California-issued gambling license, he has been the subject of a state-led probe into suspected corruption, while also dealing with a costly divorce and a bitter dispute with casino co-owners Peter and Jeanine Lunardi. The Lunardis testified against Swallow in a case brought by the state Attorney General’s Office, which accused all three M8trix owners of hiding profits to dodge taxes and avoid paying into a gambling addiction program. By now, Swallow says, he wants nothing more than to walk away from Casino M8trix. But his departure has been no less complicated than the issues that got him to this point.
On May 25, the California Gambling Control Commission approved the sale of Swallow’s M8trix shares—but not to the buyer he had in mind. Swallow preferred John Park, who already has five card clubs and vastly outbid the Lunardis with an offer to pay $55 million for half the business in 2015. But the state tapped the Lunardis and two other investors, Patrick and Jamie Tierney, to match that price and take over Swallow’s stake. Now Park is crying foul. The would-be M8trix partner is accusing regulators of playing favorites. He also says the transaction has been tainted by nefarious activity, including illegal hacking and paying for witness testimony. In a letter to the Gambling Control Commission, Park’s attorney accuses state Deputy Attorney General William Torngren of “irregular, improper and, at times, likely illegal attempts to influence the sale” to the Lunardis’ benefit. “[Torngren] has used the power of the state to conduct a concerted campaign to predetermine winners and losers among private parties
this wrongdoing, even though we had done nothing wrong, but they threw the kitchen sink at me and let them off easy. My partner wanted to keep his license, so he cut a deal, probably figuring, ‘I don’t have to outrun the bear, I just have to outrun you.’” Tracey Buck-Walsh, the attorney representing the Lunardis, dismisses the allegations raised by Swallow and Park. “Two arbitrations over the last two years have affirmed the Lunardis’ contractual right to purchase Mr. Swallow’s shares,” she says. “Mr. Swallow recently agreed and in early April signed the stock purchase agreement with the Lunardis and Tierneys, which is the agreement the commission approved last week. … A person who wanted to buy Mr. Swallow’s shares attempted to interfere with the Lunardis’ purchase and failed.” Former Attorney General Bill Lockyer came to Swallow’s defense, however. Had a prosecutor offered financial incentive for witness testimony and apparently lied to a judge about it, Lockyer says, he would demand a thorough investigation. The prominent politician—who as state Senate Pro Tem in 1998 co-authored the legislation that created the Gambling Control Commission and the Bureau of Gambling Control in the California Department of Justice—says he also takes issue with the way regulators seem to have strayed from their original mission. “The commission has become a rubber stamp,” Lockyer says, “and one that picks favorites in the market.” Gaming regulators have become too focused on technicalities, he adds, calling their findings against Swallow a lot of “self-righteous chest pounding.” “The state nitpicks in hypertechnical ways,” Lockyer says. “This is what happens in government when a bureaucracy has more of a ‘gotcha’ mentality instead of focusing on the big picture issues.” The M8trix deal raises fundamental issues of fairness, says Sean Kali-Rai, a former M8trix lobbyist. Plus, he adds, it doesn’t reflect well on the state’s new top cop: Attorney General Xavier Becerra. “If buying witness testimony and hacking emails is fair in the search for a conviction, we are all in a world of trouble greater than [President] Trump and Russia could ever pose,” Kali-Rai says. “The current and any new attorney general better tell Californians how they will protect our rights against this type of abuse, especially by his office.”

in a card room transaction,” Park’s attorney, Scott Garner, wrote in a May 24 letter obtained by San Jose Inside. The letter urged the commission to delay a decision on the sale until the allegations are investigated. Commissioners went ahead and approved the purchase the next day and the Attorney General’s Office denied Park’s claims, which echo accusations raised by Swallow in a lawsuit he filed last summer against the state. Park’s attorney says Torngren vigorously prosecuted Swallow and went easy on the Lunardis, while also trying to drive down the M8trix purchase price. Garner accuses Torngren of withholding back pay from a financially desperate witness—a former M8trix worker named Bryan Roberts—unless he testified in support of the state’s case. Garner also claims that the state prosecutor encouraged that same witness to illegally hack Swallow’s emails and servers. “In addition to effectively purchasing Mr. Roberts’ testimony, [Torngren] was, at a minimum, complicit in Mr. Roberts’ warrantless and illegal search of Mr. Swallow’s servers,” Garner wrote in his letter. Park also takes issue with the disparity in penalties between Swallow and the Lunardis. Though the 18month state probe failed to turn up evidence of tax evasion, it concluded that the casino had an illegal financial relationship with a gaming services company, and that Swallow gave false financial information to the city of San Jose. The Lunardis worked out a deal with the state, admitting to some of the charges in exchange for keeping the gambling license. The card room’s parent company, Garden City Casino, had to pay $1.5 million and the Lunardis personally got stuck with a $250,000 fine. Yet gaming commissioners, who govern the state’s Bureau of Gambling Control, demanded $13.8 million from Swallow, a record-breaking fine for the agency. By comparison, the highest fine ever leveled against a casino operator in Nevada—the nation’s preeminent gambling destination—came to $5.5 million, according to the state’s gaming commission. Records show that Torngren originally asked the commission to assess “the maximum possible fine,” as much as $18.8 million or 75 times what the Lunardis paid. “It was a money grab,” Swallow says. “My partners and I were accused of all

ilicon Valley is imbibing better than in times past, thanks to a host of new establishments and our region’s early adoption of the craft drink revolution. Every spring for the past three decades, Metro’s editorial team has treated the epicenter of global technology as its personal liquid theme park and faithfully reported the findings. It’s a tough way to make a living.
Local cocktail historians credit Cache Bouren with bringing the craft movement to town with Single Barrel in 2010, the speakeasy where patrons were admonished not to chew gum or speak loudly and forced to wait in line.Thankfully, Cache rebranded his bar as Haberdasher and toned down the attitude. Within a few years, Paper Plane, Orchard City Kitchen, The Table, Jack Rose and others followed, along with a host of places with ampersands in their names: Santana Row’s Roots & Rye, Los Gatos’ Oak & Rye and Redwood City’s Timber & Salt. Today, one is just a short Uber or Lyft ride away from a place that marinates its own cherries and has an elderflower cocktail on the menu. The area’s cocktail culture has even attracted the attention to such cultural arbiters as Vanity Fair, New York magazine and Business Insider, which zeroed in on the cougars and venture capitalists (and later, rumored escorts) at the valley’s first Los Angeles-style beautiful people scene at the Rosewood Sand Hill each Thursday night. The party survived the notoriety and the fancy cars remain, though the billionaire
you chatted with is probably just a portfolio manager at Merrill Lynch. Of even more note is the embrace of cocktail culture by the local culinary community. Alexander’s and the Plumed Horse established themselves as destinations in the mid aughts, and the famed Manresa jumped in with its own cocktail lounge six years ago. There’s an open seat most nights and it’s the insider’s way to experience a Michelin three-star restaurant for under $50. The latest entry into the high-end cocktail circuit is Los Gatos’ Catamount, which features a 35-foot long Bianco Carrara marble bar populated by various aromatics and fruits. Opened just last month by San Francisco restaurateur Ray Tang, it’s become a Hoover for established valley restaurant talent, including former Alexander’s manager Derek Schuette and Jason Seele, who developed Jack Rose’s cocktail program. A champion of the cocktail revival, Seele happily participates in the revival of a once-redundant craft. “Bartending was a profession that was looked upon with respect. When Prohibition came about, it ruined that. People either quit the industry or
they went to London or they went to Cuba. When Prohibition ended in 1932, no one came back, and it was like this big Dark Age.” (Except perhaps at Original Joe’s, and later Grill on the Alley, which kept martinis alive during this time.) Seele credits New York speakeasies Milk & Honey and Angel’s Share with launching the modern cocktail revolution, as well as Bay Area entrepreneurs who lobbied for the 2011 reform of an anachronistic state law that prohibited creating infusions, bitters and tinctures. Owner-chef Tang hopes people will come for the “entire experience,” not just the bar, though the same attention to detail that infuses the kitchen spills out into the lounge. “Some of the guys come in at 10 in the morning and start preparing their juices and infusions and syrups,” Tang says. Sliced fruits are dehydrated in $30,000 programmable Combi ovens. Clearly our drinking culture has entered a new era. There are still hazards like salted beer, baconinfused vodka and cinnamon whiskey, but it’s heartening to know there are now alternatives that are high in antioxidants as well. —Dan Pulcrano

E LIVE IN an age when people revel in their ignorance, even when good information has never been easier to access. Save the politics. We’re talking cocktails.
Not too long ago Haberdasher owner Cache Bouren—the progenitor of craft cocktails in Silicon Valley—sent along an instructional video on how to make a great Old Fashioned. I had a feeling something was up before the bartender filled the glass to the brim with Jim Beam. There’s an art to crafting a great cocktail and clearly some basic rules were being ignored, if not trampled upon, doused in kerosene and animal hair, and burned in effigy. Hoping to elevate our collective
knowledge, we reached out to Haberdasher, located in San Jose’s SoFA District, to explain the necessary tips to cocktail like a pro this summer. It starts, of course, with good spirits and fresh ingredients, but then there are a few other rules: measured pours, ice shaken only seven to 10 seconds to prevent a drink from becoming too watery, garnishing with ingredients that fit the profile of the drink. Bouren shared the secret recipe for a house special, the Tick Toki, as well as
instructions on how to make a classic daiquiri. (Put that effing blender away.)
Tick Toki • • • •
Toki Whisky — 1 ¼ oz. Cointreau — ¾ oz. Sage syrup — ¾ oz. Lemon juice — ½ oz.
Pour all ingredients before adding ice. Shake 7-10 seconds. Pour into a cold glass. Get a fresh sage leaf, smack it flat, and lay it flat over the drink. Voíla! Check out SanJose.com on June 8 for a video featuring Haberdasher owner Cache Bouren’s tips to drinking well this summer. HABERDASHER 43 W San Salvador St, San Jose. 408.792.7356. haberdashersj.com

Bitter Believe It BOTTLEROCK Ravi Takhar coordinates a daunting selection of craft beers at IBU Taproom & Bottle Shop
O
NE OF THE first things people notice when they look up IBU Taproom & Bottle Shop in Milpitas is that the six-month-old craft beer bar has no phone. Anyone interested in finding out what’s available on the 50 taps, or what’s featured in the rotating selection of 250-plus brands of cans and bottles, has two options: Facebook Messenger or get off their keister and inspect the library of beers in person.
“We started with a cellphone,” says Ravi Takhar, IBU’s beer coordinator. But then he trails off, shakes his head and smiles. He doesn’t need to finish. It’s obvious: He was wasting precious time talking about beer when he could be doing something like, say,
stocking and serving beer. Opened as an expansion to the neighboring 20-year-old Stuft Pizza franchise on Dempsey Road, IBU (an abbreviation for the measure of a beer’s bitterness) has deservedly received rave reviews by giving people a mind-blowing number
of options. “We’re big on options outside of IPA: sours, stouts,” Takhar says. “There’s always some new style that we have on tap.” Then there are the TVs. IBU and Stuft owner Ladi Musafar have made a combined commitment to put together more pixels per square foot than just about any bar and restaurant in the South Bay. In total, there are more than 30 screens to make sure guests can see the game from nearly any angle. Check out SanJose.com on June 8 for a video featuring IBU beer coordinator Ravi Takhar’s tips to drinking well this summer. UMMER IS COMING. That may not sound as ominous as winter, but here in breezy Northern California the number of wine options can sometimes leave nonsommeliers in a state of paralysis by analysis.
In steps Will Sundquist, wine director for Rootstock Wine Bar. A Los Gatos institution for six years running in Los Gatos, the celebrated wine bar and restaurant expanded operations a little less than a year ago to the bustling Vallco Shopping Mall in Cupertino. On a hot summer day, Sundquist recommends a rosé for the “perfect marriage of white and red” to avoid anything overly sweet. “I’m searching for the best producers in Napa and Sonoma,” he says, “and I’m also looking for some of our best producers in our backyard in the Santa Cruz Mountains.”
Rootstock has plenty of competition, as the public’s palate has elevated while prices for quality wine have dropped, but a top-flight wine club, comfortable outdoor seating and a selection of addictive flatbreads keeps ’em coming. In addition to extending the project reach upstream to Tully Road, the proposed modification to the project will change the target protection from 1%, or 100-year, level flood event, to protection from a flood event equivalent to the February 21, 2017 flood (approximately a 20 to 25 year event). The proposed modification also includes identifying short-term flood relief solutions, that are permittable and do not exacerbate flooding elsewhere.

BAR FLY
Couple of Nuts HIPPIE HOORAY Antonio’s Nut House has a sense of humor and beer to appreciate.
BarFly wages an epic pub crawl in search of VC funding BY TOMEK MACKOWIAK
I
WAITED FOR Mr. Harada in my lair located deep within the old New Almaden mine complex. The Quicksilver mines, as most people know it, arguably produced the region’s first outrageous fortunes (and superfund sites). The collection of San Jose mines was the most profitable outfit to come out of the Gold Rush. No other operation raked in more cash.
Some say there are intergalactic ley-lines that intersect the Bay Area, creating its unparalleled ability to generate economic boom after boom. Some say it’s the weather. Mr. Harada and I believe it’s the bars, especially the dives, that keep places like New York, Tokyo and Paris always trailing behind on those “top cities to …” lists. Mr. Harada lowered himself into my subterranean abode. I greeted him with a flaccid handshake and a pint of Fernet, as is customary in our secret fraternal organization. We decided that evening/morning/day— it really is hard to tell at the bottom of a mine shaft—that fortune favors the bold and it was time to suckle
the teat of the valley’s economic boom: Mr. Harada and I would create a hawt new app. Now we just needed a small cash injection for development, branding, marketing, a new office building, a few private residences in Woodside and, of course, a monument. We prepared rucksacks, scrambled out of the mine shaft and made our way to Diridon Station. Here we would begin our journey to mecca, or Palo Alto. We detrained with steadfast confidence and repeated the holy ABCs—“Always Be Closing!” The first stop on our map listed The Rosewood, but the name seemed pretentious and fabricated. It must have been a test. Who would consider such a place to speak seriously about the future? Bah! Mr. Harada suggested Antonio’s Nut House, and I agreed for reasons I won’t say—but trust that they were
more numerous than the fact that the bar was within walking distance.
Antonio’s Nut House We entered from a side door. A sign reading “Hippies Use Other Door” hinted at the kind of characters running the place. They obviously have an elevated sense of humor. A gorgeous facility where Stanford grads have adorned the ceiling with grotesque drawings on acoustic panels, Antonio’s is one part dive, one part taqueria. The place was covered in peanut shells and a dusty collection of bras hung above the end of the bar. Now we would only have to wait for the tech bros. Mr. Harada and I sat down at a table covered with a piece of faux alligator that may have been an unfinished cosplay project. We sipped pints of Ballast Point Sculpin, on tap, and scanned the bar for potential investors. A bookish gentleman swayed at a table next to us. His untucked floral-pattern shirt, frayed khaki shorts and sensibly padded sneakers marked him as a heavy hitter. I approached and introduced. “Hello, sir.” Before I could finish, the man expelled a burp that shattered my concentration. He was indeed a heavy hitter. I needed fresh air to regroup. Back outside, Mr. Harada and I agreed to move on. Two multicolored bicycles leaned against a nearby telephone pole. Fortune was smiling upon us. Mr. Harada and I picked the locks and were off, through the charming neighborhoods, and onto the city on the hill: Mountain View!
Mervyn’s Lounge After a pleasant ride, we realized that Mervyn’s is located in the back of a tea shop that faces the street. Patrons can also head down the alley to the back of the building and enter through the front door, which is the back door. The bar is small and intimate—a perfect place to venture and capitalize. We ordered bottles of beer since there are none on tap. The padded edge of the bar lets visitors rest their weary elbows, and a couple of extra worn-in spots exposed a
Fibbar MaGees Murphy Street is a place to relax, enjoy a drink, get noticed and get funded. So we thought. Fibbar MaGees, an Irish-themed bar built in the ’70s, was packed with techies, faces glowing from their phone screens. Mr. Harada and I ordered a couple of stouts and sat down at a table to survey the scene, but we quickly realized this was not the place. Rather than finding funders on the floor, we had, in fact, stumbled into a wasps’ nest of competition! We decided to move on before anyone stole our idea.
Murphy’s Law We found sanctuary across the street at Murphy’s Law, a bar’s bar and unpretentious place to seize the day. We found a handful of blue-collar fellows enjoying an after-work pint and struck up a hearty conversation about ’90s cinema. At one point, while trying to remember “Bronson Pinchot,” one of us may have attempted to look up the information on our phone. (Mr. Harada and I share a phone and there’s nothing weird about that.) We were politely asked by the barkeep to refrain from using technology to assist in the answer. We were, after all, there to enjoy each other’s company and not to search the internet for obscure facts. He received no argument from us. After a couple of frosty drafts, we shook hands with the men and petted a Yorkie on the way out. We mounted our bicycles with renewed vigor. Success would be just a short stroll down El Camino, and Mr. Harada and I reveled in the wind in our faces as the sun began to sink.
Halford As we approached Santa Clara’s Koreatown, Mr. Harada took the
lead and signaled me to pull over. An unhealthy stench was emanating from my rucksack. My heart sank into my wool socks. The app had gone bad over the course of the day and we hadn’t even presented it to anyone. Who would now invest in our balsamictarragon infused tako sashimi breaded cutlet served on a bed of gluten-free nasturtium pollen? No one, that’s who.
Now we just needed a small cash injection for development, branding, marketing, a new office building, a few private residences in Woodside and, of course, a monument. There we were, our world-saving, game-changing appetizer rotten in my rucksack, our stomachs gurgling for food, the street lights blinking, the roar of cars speeding down the street: the world is too much sometimes. And then we sighted a beacon of hope. The Halford, potentially named after the lead singer of Judas Priest, is a modern brewpub. A large, rotating selection of craft brews accompanies a California-influenced menu. Traditionalists may balk at the strip mall location, or the well-lit interior, and that’s fine. There are plenty of dim dives and old-world themed bars to satisfy these curmudgeons. Mr. Harada and I shared an order of shoestring fries that came paired with an excellent spicy orange sauce. The beer was nourishing. Our app failed to get funded, but it is the journey that matters. Especially if one catches all the happy hour deals.

layer of vinyl upholstery underneath. Dive bar archeologists live all their lives pining for such a discovery. The prices were Central Valley low, so we took advantage of the happy hour deals and stole glances to make sure no one was on to us. Back on the bikes, we ventured to Sunnyvale, where we were sure to have more success.

ROGER WATERS Wed, 8pm, $82+ SAP Center, San Jose
Roger Waters still has a fire in his belly after all these years. Thanks, Trump! Following up 2010’s The Wall Tour—which he hinted would be his swan song—is the Us + Them Tour. Waters will be performing material from a handful of Pink Floyd albums, including Dark Side of the Moon and Animals, along with solo material from his upcoming LP Is This the Life We Really Want. The show will purportedly make use of some pretty serious visuals; that should come as no surprise for anyone familiar with Pink Floyd’s ultra-ambitious 1980 The Wall Tour. (YK)

Laugh along as the memorable duo navigate the virulent waters of corruption, seduction and global warming. It’s an outlandish love story with an environmental kiss. (CM)

The Bay Area’s longest-running alt-rock extravaganza is back with BFD 2017, a festival whose lineup lives up to its famous acronym yet again. But before plodding through the sweaty crowds at Shoreline, head to The Ritz this Friday for an irresistibly affordable, intimate sneak peek at the festival to come. South Bay alternative veterans Strata headline the pre-party, with direct support from Picture Atlantic, who recently released their latest effort ASSOUF. Also on the bill: Oakland-based Indie electronica artist Birthday and longtime Live 105 DJ and program director Aaron Axelsen on the ones and twos. (CM)
Breaking out in 1993 with her chart-topping debut album Tuesday Night Music Club, Sheryl Crow was at the vanguard of the female alt-rock charge that hit modern rock radio in the early ’90s. Crow found success by charting a middle path through the Lilith Fair set—a bit more rock & roll than the folksy ballads of Jewel and Sarah McLachlan; a bit less bombastic than the blistering post-grunge angst of Alanis Morissette and Fiona Apple. Looking back, it all seems quite purposeful when you consider the opening lines of “All I Wanna Do”—“This ain’t no disco. It ain’t no country club, either.” (NV)

Fresh Prints ÓRALE, QUE FRESH! Fuchila Fresheners are so much more than a little green tree.
Fuchila Fresheners bring art and culture to the rear view mirror BY VICENTE SERNA
I
T ALL STARTED as a throwaway joke at a family party. “Wouldn’t it be funny if there was an air freshener company called fuchila?” Ruben Villa recalls quipping. His wife, Veronica, agreed. “Fuchila” is Spanish slang used when something is smelly or off-putting. The joke continued, even to the point where his family joked about silly designs and smells that the company could sell, but all the while Ruben saw it as something bigger.
“Yeah, we didn’t think he was serious at all,” Veronica says. After quitting his design job at Apple in 2014, Villa got serious and launched a Kickstarter for his company, Fuchila Fresheners, to raise $2,500. He created six original designs that he hoped would hit different age groups of the Latino market. He promised sponsors that if the money was raised he would get them the fresheners by Christmas Day that year. With his original designs of Selena, Frida Kahlo, Pancho Villa, Cantinflas, a sugar skull and the Mexican luchador Blue Demon, they soon surpassed their goal by $1,000, with more than 140 investors pitching in. “I was getting emails saying, ‘Oh my God, I can’t believe no one has
thought of this before, we love this,’” Ruben says. Come Christmas Day, with a rosescented Selena air freshener hanging from their rearview mirror, they drove to local investors’ homes to keep their promise and hand-deliver the fresheners. All of the fresheners that the Villas have designed are inspired from personal experiences growing up as Latinos. They gain inspiration from reminiscing about their Saturday mornings as kids waking up to loud old-school cumbias and having to clean the house. “I think about who are the people that I saw on TV, who are the people that made an impression on me,” Ruben says about finding inspiration for designs. “First, second and third generation Latinos are either struggling or really fighting to hold on to or maintain their cultura. If we could help out with that, then we’re really excited.” In 2015 they officially started
Fuchila Fresheners with a launch party at Chacho’s Restaurant in downtown San Jose. Chacho’s became one of their first vendors and today they have vendors in seven states within the United States as well as two vendors in Mexico. Fuchila Fresheners has been highlighted in many Latino publications like Mitú, Latino Buzzfeed, Latina Magazine, Flama and Comunidad del Valle. Villa says he eventually wants to sell modern twists on traditional Mexican candles and one day get his products in Target stores. Currently they are collaborating with local artists to create special editions. Abraham Ortega, a tattoo artist for Death Before Dishonor in San Jose, designed a trio of fresheners titled “The Three Ladies” which depict Latina women as a bandita, a hyna and a rucca. “From the very beginning we’ve had a great support system in the community,” says Veronica. “We’re very blessed to have that, whether it be a customer or a business owner. It’s not just a product, it’s more like the Fuchila familia. That’s what we say, ‘Thank you for being part of the Fuchila familia.’” Though the business has spread throughout the country and parts of Mexico, Fuchila Fresheners is still a small, family-run business. On top of everything they do, the two also go to local car shows to sell the fresheners and the Dia de Los Muertos celebrations held in November in San Jose and Oakland. The Villas agree that they want to give back to the community. They know firsthand what it is like to have to work hard for what they need, getting jobs early on in their teenage years to be able to afford things for school. They are currently planning on possibly creating a scholarship to help future designers pay for a computer or the Adobe Creative suite. “I’ve always said if I were to start a company, I would want people to feel like people are joining a family,” Ruben says.

WONDERFUL Gal Gadot takes on the titular role in DC’s latest, excellent comic book flick—finally giving Wonder Woman her due.
The original Amazon gets the film she deserves in ‘Wonder Woman’ BY RICHARD VON BUSACK
T
HERE IS NOTHING an audience likes better than the sight of a woman with a sword. A long, long overdue movie, given our taste for superheroics, Wonder Woman deserves to be a hit. All the things that go right here overwhelm the few that don’t.
The sexually bohemian psychologist William Moulton Marston’s comic book character emerged in 1941, rising in popularity as women took over previously maleheld roles during World War II. His modern-day Amazon was derived
from numerous legends of women warriors talked about throughout the ancient world. Female Spartans must have been a fearful idea to the ancients, given how women were kept behind closed doors in Greece and elsewhere. But the inspired script, credited to Allan Heinberg, has the seemingly immortal Diana, Princess of Themyscira (Gal Gadot) arriving among men during World War I. The Great War isn’t just a theme park background, with No Man’s Land as the right place for this woman. Wonder Woman’s plot mirrors the real-life experience of the soldiers. The combatants shipped in with the highest idealism about slaying War itself: thus “The War to End all Wars.” Through bitter experience in the trenches, however, the soldiers
realized it was just one more war, the worst yet and perhaps an endless one. Thus, the Thucydides tag murmured by the Kaiser’s Gen. Erich Ludendorff (Danny Huston, fragrantly evil): “Peace is an armistice in a war that is continuously going on.” The real-life Ludendorff quit the war in its last October; in this fictional version, with the armistice just days away, the German has a secret plan to strike and win. Many a child’s first sight of WWI in the history books was unforgettable: the terrifying rubber gas masks, with goggle eyes and blunt, protruding snouts. Director Patty Jenkins (Monster) returns to these images— one mask cracking and melting in the laboratory of the disfigured scientist known as “Dr. Poison” (Elena Anaya, as malignly attractive as Gale Sondergaard was decades ago). Voice rasping from some terrible mustard gas accident, she wears a historically authentic prosthetic along her jaw. In Captain Ahab’s term, Diana wants to strike through these and all

masks: she’s coming, sword in hand, for man’s ancient enemy Ares, the God of War. The innocence of this mission bemuses the military spy Steve Trevor—Chris Pine, a good man in a reaction shot as he watches Diana get to know her own Olympian strength. The romance with Steve perplexes Diana from her first Miranda moment of sizing up the first man she’s ever seen, but it’s physical too—it includes some witty double-entendre business about a wristwatch. Jenkins has a feeling for Greek myth come to life. Diana is awe-inspiring in leaping freeze-frame, and the film stages ancient-time flashbacks to look like animated neo-classical paintings. In closeups, Gadot deals out the kind of heart-punch unfelt since professional wrestler Ox Baker retired. She obviously believes in the role: there’s no irony in it. Maybe that’s helped by the fact that no one has to address her as Wonder Woman. It’s useless to disguise this noteworthy beauty with a pair of glasses and a frumpy ankle-length dress. Everyone’s favorite infiltration scene—the secret attendee at a villain’s conference knocking out a sucker and stealing their outfit—is done in admirable shorthand. Diana thoughtfully measures a woman up to check out her size, before we cut away. And there is a fairy tale quality when the stolen blue gown is shed later, floating in the air behind Diana as she escapes on horseback. The last third is sometimes a CG cartoon—default for the genre; if a villain never again asks the hero, “Is that all you’ve got?” that’d be nice. But this was worth every year of the time it took to get here, through decades of cringe-inducing development—the internet is littered with the false starts, do read and be disgusted. And why the pathetic display of hurt feelings by fanboys when Austin’s Alamo Drafthouse tried to have an all-female screening of Wonder Woman? It all only proves that the idea of a great woman warrior is just as threatening now as it was to Herodotus.

Distributed by the locally based Wolfe Video, Maura Anderson’s sharp, touching Heartland is everything an indie movie ought to be—except for the Reaganera title, which can’t be helped. Everything has turned out badly for young Lauren (Velinda Godfrey), a young lesbian artist working out of Oklahoma City’s one-street hipsterville. Her lover died of cancer, she lost her job and she’s been evicted from the house where the two of them lived. She has one good option, to move back into the house where she grew up, in Guthrie, Oklahoma, not too far from the city. Lauren’s brother Justin (Aaron Leddick), a wine-business executive from Napa, arrives with his petite red-headed girlfriend, Carrie (Laura Spencer), the odd-girl-out among all these rural types. Lauren and Carrie get close… closer than the brother would like, since he’s neglecting Carrie in favor of work launching an Oklahoma winery. These exist; scenes were shot at the Redbud Ridge Winery in the college town of Norman. The plausibility is heightened by Anderson’s thoughtful direction and the Oklahoma landscapes. This underrated state shows off its fine creeks and hills and skyscapes, and the living here is easy: the two girls ride in the bed of a pickup truck heading down the road, tipsy and kissing. They come to an even better understanding during Carrie’s first tornado alert (the Californian puts on a football helmet, in hopes of protection from falling timbers). Here’s to a director who knows that a love scene should tell a story about what the characters have been through, and not just be an erotic display for us. And here’s to a director who prefers a well-played, hopeful ending to a forced happy one. What keeps this on the smart side of farce, especially, is Beth Grant as Lauren’s mother, Crystal. This character actress has worked for Richard Kelly and the Coens (No Country for Old Men), and she’s very good at making her eyes go blank when something comes in front of them that she doesn’t want to see. For example: when she finds a pencil drawing her daughter made of herself lying next to her late lover. They used to say soldiers who’d had a really bad time of it possessed “the thousand-yard stare.” This genteel maternal blankness is the thousandyard stare of the Culture Wars.
(1948/1940) Cary Grant and Myrna Loy play Mr. and Mrs. James Blandings, "Two little fish in the deep, deep waters of Connecticut real estate." And since real estate oft surpasses sex as the most lively topic of conversation, this vintage comedy still holds up well. Grant is a Manhattan adman given to snap judgments; his wife (Loy) seems to have a bit of a past with the couple's best chum, a justly cynical lawyer (Melvyn Douglas). Blustering dad, infuriatingly sleek wife, precocious daughters—all are familiar from the TV sitcoms modeled on films like these, but director H.C. Potter doesn't make the slapstick overemphatic. The film glides along amusingly while dealing with a subject of real trauma: a chump in the hands of his contractors. Several scenes are still harrowing. And several gambits, such as the "fruit orchard in the backyard," are still in use by today's agents trying to unload their own termite-ridden shacks. The film is absolutely required viewing for anyone in the market for a first house, and is superior to the sort-of remake with Tom Hanks (The Money Pit). It’s more humane, too (as in a fine little bit of laconic humor by Harry Shannon as Tesander, the well digger). P.S.: The rejected ad jingle for Wham Hams, as chanted by a deadline-crazed Grant: "This little piggy went to market / as meek and as mild as a lamb /He smiled in his tracks / as they slipped him the ax / He knew he'd turn out to be Wham." BILLED WITH My Favorite Wife Irene Dunne plays an anthropologist stuck on a desert island after a shipwreck; her husband (Grant), convinced she's dead, remarries (to Gail Patrick). Only Dunne's timely reappearance helps keep the marriage unconsummated. Grant, being Grant, keeps many of the scenes afloat with his own inimitably urbane comedy. But this is a rehash of Grant and Irene Dunne's previous hit, Leo McCarey's The Awful Truth. The plot is the same, as well as the ending. Even the dog is clearly a second-rater compared to Asta. While director Garson Kanin would greatly improve in visual style in later years (with classics like Adam's Rib and Born Yesterday), here the awkwardness of rhythm and camera placement are notable compared to the work of a sharp operator like McCarey. (Plays June 9-11 in Palo Alto at the Stanford Theatre.) (RvB)
REVIEW
FAMILIAL RELATIONS Rachel Weisz seems to have been born for the titular role in ‘My Cousin Rachel.’
Kissing Cousins MADE SCALY BY the filigree of the lace of her long black veil, Rachel Weisz stars in a role so right for her that it’s seemingly named in her honor: the Daphne du Maurier adaptation, My Cousin Rachel. She’s no letdown to the actresses who previously assayed the role, Olivia de Havilland (1952) and Geraldine Chaplin (1983). At 47, Weisz shows almost no discernable signs of aging, unless it’s a subtle ripening into lushness. Her Rachel is a seductive older woman, who perhaps learned the old craft of poisoning from her time in Florence. In the middle of the 19th century, handsome Philip (Sam Claflin, Finnick in the Hunger Games) was raised by his cousin Ambrose on their sheep ranch on the Cornish coast. Ambrose has poor health and takes his winters in Italy—there, he encounters another cousin, Rachel, raised in that land. Ambrose marries her, and shortly expires… but not before sending letters in splattered ink, as if Ralph Steadman lettered them. Ambrose claims he’s been murdered by Rachel. When Philip goes to Italy to find out more about Ambrose’s demise, he learns the supposed cause of death was a brain tumor. Soon Rachel arrives in England to view her husband’s land, though Ambrose
never changed his will in her favor. At 25, Philip will own the manor, but he’s taken by the comely widow, and charmed by her sophistication. If only she weren’t so insistent on serving up peculiarly noxious herbal teas... Avoiding Masterpiece Theatre syndrome, Roger Michell (Venus, Notting Hill) uses handheld camera and quick editing; he also makes the farm life notably coarse— My Cousin Rachel on the gauche side of Thomas Hardy, with R; 106 Mins. obscenities shouted, Camera Cinemas and close-ups of sawing into meat at the table (at Christmas, the farmhands tear the roast goose apart with their hands). After being taken for a roll in the bluebells by Philip, Rachel mops herself with a handkerchief. It’s an idea to take material this moonlit and foggy into the realm of the realistic. But Claflin, playing the most foolish property owner since King Lear, can’t convince us of his blinding passion. My Cousin Rachel withholds an extremely important bit of information until the last minute. And the denouement isn’t set up in a way that can be believed. It’s rushed, it’s abject. —Richard von Busack

Return of the Mac DON’T STOP Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie get the band back together on new self-titled record.
Buckingham & McVie album reunites Fleetwood Mac, mostly BY RICHARD VON BUSACK
I
N SON OF the Morning Star we read that the elderly Sitting Bull enjoyed visits with old U.S. cavalry soldiers who came by to see him. With whom else could you have such a deep conversation about the Little Bighorn? This is the reason why, someday, you will be happy to hear Nickleback at the old folks’ home. Fleetwood Mac’s mega-monster hit Rumours (1977) was everywhere in its day. Those songs were in the air
of the times, like the smell of musky polyester. It’s a surprise—those LPs that one once would have gladly shot as skeet, end up as repositories of the angst of the age. “Rhiannon” isn’t quite Joni Mitchell, but it does sum up a certain kind of Me Decade woman, aeire-faerie, and a flame to all us dumb male moths. The blood hasn’t quite dried on “The Chain” charting the devastating circumstances of the Sausalito recording sessions of Rumours. Here was an incestuous ronde of affairs, set into spinning overdrive by the kind of A-1 nose-candy few sub-rock stars have ever snorted. (The band honored the album’s suggestive title, posing four in bed on the cover of the Rolling Stone.)
The 2017 perspective suggests singer and keyboardist Christine McVie contributed to all the really good songs on Rumours. The appealing sweet sorrow of her singing the lines “Have mercy, baby, on a poor girl like me” harks back to Fleetwood Mac’s origins as a blues band. Plus Christine plays the accordion sometimes. And plus, also, on video, she’s charming with her snappy answer to the stupid question: “How does it feel being a sex symbol?” “I dunno, ask Stevie Nicks.” Lindsey Buckingham/Christine McVie drops June 9, with two tracks released in advance. The duo has about a dozen summer tour dates, the nearest to us being two hours away at the Ironstone Winery in Murphys on Jul 21; they’re part of a musical calendar that includes Matchbox 20 and good ol’ Willie Nelson. But it’s clear the unkillable—and arguably local—band is back, just re-labeled Christine’s ex, John McVie turned up
in the studio for the new recording, and Mick Fleetwood is on drums. Only Stevie Nicks is MIA. There are no spring chickens here, obviously. The ungallant might say “Now, here we have a band with a couple of centuries of experience between them.” The new album marks something like five decades of south of San Francisco music. Buckingham and his off-again, on-again partner Stephanie “Stevie” Nicks met at Menlo Atherton High. In the late 1960s they played the county fairgrounds and the valley’s high school gyms as the Fritz Rabyne Memorial Band, popularly known as Fritz. The album Buckingham Nicks continued the work of these collaborators and lovers. Years later, when Buckingham was about to go full Brian Wilson in the studio for Tusk, he prepared by composing the songs on a then-state of the art home recording studio system. I would have liked to have thrown the duo a few questions, but I was weighed and found wanting by the publicists. I found solace for this within the book Tusk by Rob Trucks (33 1/3)—“Lindsey Buckingham screwed me,” complains Trucks, as he was given a broken promise of interviews concerning that landmark double album. Trucks had to make up the shortage with descriptions of his childhood and his toenail fungus (ain’t joking). Still, there’s useful info here; the interview by trumpeter Gretchen Heffler of the USC Spirit of Troy Marching Band, heard in the recording of my lifetime favorite Mactrack “Tusk.” Also, Jonathan Segel of Camper Van Beethoven recalls the process by which his band traced over and recorded every track on F-Mac’s allegedly unpopular album Tusk. Tusk, the double-album follow-up to Rumours, was hardly a financial stinkbomb. As Trucks points out, it earned well, just not by the standards of the book made by its hit predecessor. Show me the double album that doesn’t have a little fat on it, but Tusk is a serious musical stance: a band surveying the littered landscape after a crackup.

FREE WILL ASTROLOGY ARIES (March 21-April 19): If you chose me as your relationship guide, I'd counsel you and your closest ally to be generous with each other; to look for the best in each other and praise each other's beauty and strength. If you asked me to help foster your collaborative zeal, I'd encourage you to build a shrine in honor of your bond—an altar that would invoke the blessings of deities, nature spirits, and the ancestors. If you hired me to advise you on how to keep the fires burning and the juices flowing between you two, I'd urge you to never compare your relationship to any other, but rather celebrate the fact that it's unlike any other in the history of the planet. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): The Milky Way Galaxy
contains more than 100 billion stars. If they were shared equally, every person on Earth could have dominion over at least 14. I mention this because you're in a phase when it makes sense for you to claim your 14. Yes, I'm being playful, but I'm also quite serious. According to my analysis of the upcoming weeks, you will benefit from envisaging big, imaginative dreams about the riches that could be available to you in the future. How much money do you want? How much love can you express? How thoroughly at home in the world could you feel? How many warm rains would you like to dance beneath? How much creativity do you need to keep reinventing your life? Be extravagant as you fantasize.
GEMINI (May 21-June 20): "When I grow up, I'm
not sure what I want to be." Have you ever heard that thought bouncing around your mind, Gemini? Or how about this one: "Since I can't decide what I want to be, I'll just be everything." If you have been tempted to swear allegiance to either of those perspectives, I suggest it's time to update your relationship with them. A certain amount of ambivalence about commitment and receptivity to myriad possibilities will always be appropriate for you. But if you hope to fully claim your birthright, if you long to ripen into your authentic self, you'll have to become ever-more definitive and specific about what you want to be and do.
CANCER (June 21-July 22): As a Cancerian myself, I've had days when I've stayed in bed from morning to nightfall, confessing my fears to my imaginary friends and eating an entire cheesecake. As an astrologer, I've noticed that these blue patches seem more likely to occur during the weeks before my birthday each year. If you go through a similar blip any time soon, here's what I recommend: Don't feel guilty about it. Don't resist it. Instead, embrace it fully. If you feel lazy and depressed, get REALLY lazy and depressed. Literally hide under the covers with your headphones on and feel sorry for yourself for as many hours as it takes to exhaust the gloom and emerge renewed. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): In the early days of the Internet, "sticky" was a term applied to websites that were good at drawing readers back again and again. To possess this quality, a content provider had to have a knack for offering text and images that web surfers felt an instinctive yearning to bond with. I'm reanimating this term so I can use it to describe you. Even if you don't have a website, you now have a soulful adhesiveness that arouses people's urge to merge. Be discerning how you use this stuff. You may be stickier than you realize! VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Ancient Mayans used
chili and magnolia and vanilla to prepare exotic chocolate drinks from cacao beans. The beverage was sacred and prestigious to them. It was a centerpiece of cultural identity and an accessory in religious rituals. In some locales, people were rewarded for producing delectable chocolate with just the right kind and amount of froth. I suspect, Virgo, that you will soon be asked to do the equivalent of demonstrating your personal power by whipping up the best possible chocolate froth. And according to my reading of the astrological omens, the chances are good you'll succeed.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Do you have your visa for the wild side? Have you packed your bag of tricks? I hope you'll bring gifts to dispense, just in case you'll need to procure favors in the outlying areas where the rules are a bit loose. It might also be a good idea to take along a skeleton key and a snake-bite kit. You won't necessarily need them. But I suspect you'll be

offered magic cookies and secret shortcuts, and it would be a shame to have to turn them down simply because you're unprepared for the unexpected.
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): You're like a prince
or princess who has been turned into a frog by the spell of a fairy tale villain. This situation has gone on for a while. In the early going, you retained a vivid awareness that you had been transformed. But the memory of your origins has faded, and you're no longer working so diligently to find a way to change back into your royal form. Frankly, I'm concerned. This horoscope is meant to remind you of your mission. Don't give up! Don't lose hope! And take extra good care of your frog-self, please.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): People might have ideas about you that are at odds with how you understand yourself. For example, someone might imagine that you have been talking trash about them—even though you haven't been. Someone else may describe a memory they have about you, and you know it's a distorted version of what actually happened. Don't be surprised if you hear even more outlandish tales, too, like how you're stalking Taylor Swift or conspiring with the One World Government to force all citizens to eat kale every day. I'm here to advise you to firmly reject all of these skewed projections. For the immediate future, it's crucial to stand up for your right to define yourself—to be the final authority on what's true about you. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): "God doesn't
play dice with the universe," said Albert Einstein. In response, another Nobel Prize-winning physicist, Niels Bohr, said to Einstein, "Stop giving instructions to God." I urge you to be more like Bohr than Einstein in the coming weeks, Capricorn. As much as possible, avoid giving instructions to anyone, including God, and resist the temptation to offer advice. In fact, I recommend that you abstain from passing judgment, demanding perfection, and trying to compel the world to adapt itself to your definitions. Instead, love and accept everything and everyone exactly as they are right now.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Lysistrata is a
satire by ancient Greek playwright Aristophanes. It takes place during the war between Athens and Sparta. The heroine convinces a contingent of women to withhold sexual privileges from the soldiers until they stop fighting. "I will wear my most seductive dresses to inflame my husband's ardor," says one. "But I will never yield to his desires. I won't raise my legs towards the ceiling. I will not take up the position of the Lioness on a Cheese Grater." Regardless of your gender, Aquarius, your next assignment is twofold: 1. Don't be like the women in the play. Give your favors with discerning generosity. 2. Experiment with colorful approaches to pleasure like the Lioness with a Cheese Grater, the Butterfly Riding the Lizard, the Fox Romancing the River, and any others you can dream up.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Take your seasick pills. The waves will sometimes be higher than your boat. Although I don't think you'll capsize, the ride may be wobbly. And unless you have waterproof clothes, it's probably best to just get naked. You WILL get drenched. By the way, don't even fantasize about heading back to shore prematurely. You have good reasons to be sailing through the rough waters. There's a special "fish" out there that you need to catch. If you snag it, it will feed you for months—maybe longer. I’m a 35-year-old masculine gay man. I’ve had relationships with (masculine) gay men, but I’m often attracted to masculine straight men. I’m not looking to “turn” them, and I’m ready for a relationship, so I’m concerned that I’m so frequently attracted to men who won’t be interested in me. What is this about? Do I need therapy?—Worried Gay Guy

Like you, I happen to like men who look like their hobbies are chopping down trees and going to war with foreign powers. I am not attracted to femmy men in body glitter with My Little Pony haircuts. Luckily for me, the sort of people I am attracted to did not require me to come out to my parents (“Mom and Dad…II-I’m straight”), nor are my preferences considered reason for suspicion that I might be a self-loathing heterosexual. As for you, because of the ugly views and behaviors toward gays, sure, it’s possible that your being attracted to straight men is some sort of internalized version of those camps for “praying away the gay.” (If that seems to be a possibility, yes, you should look into that—perhaps with a therapist’s help.) But if you were really so self-loathing and in denial about being gay, wouldn’t you just be sneaking glances at all the manly men on your way to marrying a woman and buying a house with a lot of closet space? Your being a manly man who’s into boyfriends who wield power tools not intended for hairstyling might be
explained by research on “assortative mating.” This basically means “like mates with like”—reflecting how we seem motivated to choose mates who are similar to us on various levels, from age to looks to race to personality. In the gay world, psychologist J. Michael Bailey’s research finds that masculine gay men tend to prefer masculine partners (Conan the Barbarian versus Conan the Featherboa-tarian). Increased similarity between partners is associated with happier, longer-lasting relationships. This makes sense, considering that more similarity means more compatibility—from shared beliefs to shared interests and activities. So, it’s good news you’re eyeing the manlier men, even if many are ultimately “for display purposes only.” Of course, it is possible that you’re telling yourself you want a relationship but picking people totally unavailable for one. If that isn’t the case, why worry that your ideal relationship is basically a nature preserve for chest hair and testosterone?

I went through a crazy party girl period in my 20s. My boyfriend recently asked me how many men I’d slept with before him. I told him, and he freaked out at the number—despite his having his own wild past. Now I wish I hadn’t been honest. What should I have said instead?—Glum It’s usually best to keep mum if the number of men is something like “I’m not exactly sure because the census takers keep fainting from exhaustion while they’re tallying up my total.” There is a sexual double standard, though it doesn’t come from men wanting to keep women’s sex drives in park (which wouldn’t exactly serve their interest). What’s telling, however, are sex differences in jealousy—specifically, jealousy over infidelity. Evolutionary psychologist David Buss finds that men across cultures are most distressed by sexual infidelity—the sex acts themselves. Though women aren’t exactly “yeah, whatevs” about their partner’s doing the nudie tootie with another woman, women are substantially more distressed by his being emotionally gaga about someone else.
These differences in freakouts dovetail with men’s and women’s differing evolutionary concerns. Women evolved to worry that their partner would divert his investment of time, energy and resources in her and her children to a rival. Men, however, have a different worry. Because a man can never really be sure whether a child is his (“paternity uncertainty”), any sex act his partner has with another man could lead to his spending decades feeding and caring for some other dude’s genetic offspring. The thing is, having a crazy party girl period doesn’t mean you’re unethical. It’s possible that pointing that out to your boyfriend might help. If, in the future, another boyfriend asks for your sexual tally, be generally honest but avoid giving any specific number.

Room for More SUBSTITUTE MOTION ‘Urban Rooms’ might just salvage the city of San Jose’s misguided attempts at urbanism.
San Jose bureaucracy fumbles its way into an interesting scene BY GARY SINGH
A
MICROCOSM OF San Jose history can be summed up in the following sequence of events: In order to remove hookers and homeless people from a tiny park, the city destroys one end of the park with military precision and replaces it with a sun-baked slab of colorless concrete, devoid of foliage and shade, to create an eyesore that no one would possibly use even if they wanted to navigate the hick-town bureaucracy of bloated permits.
Once that idea predictably fails, the space sits empty for years on end. Then comes the next phase: An architect from a real city builds something on the slab of concrete, and then, after a few more years of meetings with public art bureaucrats, urban planners and construction companies, San Jose finally unveils a new project by having the mayor stand there and declare suburban sprawl out and urbanism in. The result? Well, it debuted last week with the opening of “Urban Rooms” by Teddy Cruz, a colorful activation of the concrete slab at the northern end of Parque de los Pobladores at First & William in the SoFA District. We get a small outdoor stage, plus overhead tarp shading and vivid chainlink cages, seemingly floating above the space. It looks like something discarded
from Chuck E. Cheese’s, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Fortunately, the project debuted at the SubZERO Festival, which proved a logical way to kick off the space. SubZERO took advantage of “Urban Rooms” by using the permanent stage both Friday and Saturday, filling up the whole intersection with beer, DJs, musicians and artists—exactly what it should be used for. The space was turned into a keen gathering spot, surrounded by food trucks and other activities for teens and adults alike, a perfect way to bookend a street festival. MACLA was raging, as were SJICA and the Museum of Quilts and Textiles. Of course, the protracted process of transforming the concrete into something unique will only succeed if it gets used on a regular basis—never a guarantee around here—and not just once every five months whenever someone gets the ambition to shell out for the asinine permit prices. And if the Roscoe P. Coltranes in the police department keep forcing everyone to pay for two officers to stand there
all day, seemingly whenever a group of any more than 20 wants to gather anywhere, then maybe this whole plan won’t succeed at all. I guess history will judge. From there, the SubZERO festivities proceeded up South First Street, in prime form, as always, with thousands of people attending. By now, SubZERO is one of the most anticipated weekends of the year. This time around, the festival showcased many of the same vendors, plus a few new ones. Which brings me to my only criticism.
The space was turned into a keen gathering spot This year, three-quarters of SubZERO, at least on the street, was the same stuff that transpires every single year. I walked up and down, thinking, with a sigh, “OK, there’s the steampunk booth, there’s the vintage clothing, there are the people using 25 audio mixers on a table to create disco music,” etc., etc. I began to miss the early years of the festival, when a predominance of random interactive nomadic weirdness awaited around every single corner— you know, stilts, contraptions, robotic gear, wandering cellists, floating orbs or LED bicycles. It felt more raw back in those days and much less contrived. This year, as with last year, the empty spaces were quite noticeable. I would like to see the organizers constantly evolve the festival rather than settling into the same formula. Otherwise, it becomes nothing more than a counterculture version of Tapestry in Talent, which is what nobody wants. None of which ruined the experience, though. In addition to “Urban Rooms,” evolutions of the physical landscape like Forager added awesome new dimensions to the environment. Friday bands were playing inside, while Saturday saw a lecture series. Both nights catered to an entirely different crowd than what unfolded outside on the street. That’s a good thing. I will still continue to hail the progenitors of culture, as the saying goes.

NSPIRATION IS A funny thing. Sometimes it comes from modest goals, as is the case for Lawrence Lemery, owner of 1621 Bistro—the newest gastropub in San Jose’s Northside.
“Our real inspiration is to offer good food to the neighborhood we grew up in,” he says. “We want to provide good food at an easygoing, affordable spot. Nothing fancy or pretentious, just good, hearty meals.” Those are words any foodie can get behind. 1621 Bistro, named simply after the address on North Capitol Avenue, takes pride in the fact that almost everything they serve is made in-house. For burgers, they use a combination of Wagyu beef and rib-eye steak trimmings, which are cut from their house-made prime rib. Lemery brought in Milohas empanada master Kyoo Choe as a baking partner, and he’s currently working on recipes for 1621’s own signature hamburger buns, sandwich breads and pastries. All they’re waiting on is the baking ovens to be installed. Once that’s done? “I think we will have the best burgers in the South Bay,” Lemery says. I arrived on a Saturday to check out their all-you-can-eat brunch buffet (weekends 10am–2pm, $15 each). The brunch, while not necessarily Hawaiian-themed, definitely skews in that direction, as one of 1621’s chefs is of Hawaiian descent and likes to serve up what he considers “comfort food.” The brunch consists of your staples (e.g., scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns) and then there’s island favorites that include Kahlua pork, malasadas, crab cakes, Portuguese sausage, and made-to-order loco moco over fried rice. There’s even a make-your-own benedict station, where customers can even order up a loco moco benedict or chicken and waffles. I found myself leaning towards the Hawaiian side of the menu. Of course, no brunch would be complete without a mimosa, and their bottomless guava mimosa ($12) helped cleanse my palate. The Kahlua pork was outstandingly juicy and had a light, smoky flavor unlike anything I’ve had on the mainland. My dining partner noted that the pork was a superb match with the crispy hash browns. The malasadas were fluffy balls of doughy goodness that melted in my mouth. However, the crown jewel was easily the loco moco—the poached egg combined with their tender, beefy hamburger meat and fried rice was an epic flavor adventure. With everything just a click away these days, interactions with passionate restaurateurs become increasingly infrequent. 1621 seems destined to be one of the area’s better eateries with an owner who cares as much as Lemery. I’ll definitely be back to try their burgers, prime rib and maybe just a nibble of their pastrami fries. —John Dyke 1621 BISTRO 1621 N Capitol Ave, San Jose. 408.929.5501
