Dogged Advice The real problem is that I hardly ever see you. But I do see your dog, an adorable German shepherd who looks to be about a year old. I see that he, or she, is chained up most of the day on a short leash, yelping for what I hope is just attention and not a lack of food or water. What puzzles me is that you have a large yard. Maybe you’re afraid your pooch will chew something up? Here’s how you fix that: spend time with the poor pup and teach her/him how to behave. You could also find a trainer, check out manuals at the local library or just watch a YouTube video.

THE FLY

Noracidivism Nov. 8, 2016, may very well be a day that lives in infamy, but not every election went sideways. See: NORA CAMPOS. For nearly two decades she remained on the periphery of power representing San Jose’s East Side. First she held a San Jose council seat for 10 years, before six more in the state Assembly. Arguably, her greatest feat in that time was avoiding criminal charges during the prosecution of GEORGE SHIRAKAWA JR. Her brother, XAVIER, who succeeded Nora to rep San Jose’s District 5 for four fruitless years, was so rattled during a grand jury hearing on Shirakawa’s crimes that he invoked the Fifth Amendment. In a desperate ploy to remain relevant as she termed out last year, Nora waged an ill-fated challenge to state Sen. JIM BEALL. Big Oil bankrolled the losing campaign. So with that history taken into account—oh, her husband, NEIL STRUTHERS, also got involved in an embarrassing 2016 brawl at the Fairmont— the demise of the Campos family political enterprise might be a They foregone conclusion. Not Did everyone got the memo What? however, and now comes a media report from SEND TIPS TO a newly whitewashed FLY@ METRONEWS. downtown building COM suggesting Nora is considering a run against D5 Councilwoman MAGDALENA CARRASCO. “A lot of people have approached me,” Nora told the Mercury News. “I’m concerned about the fact that our district is not getting the attention it deserves.” It’s not clear what Nora means by “attention.” Perhaps she was referencing the 2010 election, when a fraudulent political mailer linked to Shirakawa and Xavier stole victory from Carrasco by 20 votes. Carrasco may be hard to pin down on every issue, but there’s little doubt she’s brought some new energy to the seat. In just two and half years she helped pass pro-renter and anti-wage theft ordinances, secured funds for businesses affected by VTA construction delays and improved access to community centers. “She can go ahead and accuse me of everything she wants,” Carrasco said. “She should be ashamed, but she has no shame.”

Empty Win BEST CASE SCENARIO District Attorney Jeff Rosen, left, and prosecutor David Boyd got the guilty verdicts they wanted, but the body of Sierra LaMar (inset) remains missing.

Jury finds Morgan Hill man guilty of murder, kidnapping Sierra LaMar BY MICHAEL MOORE

A

T LEAST TWO courtrooms full of spectators—including the family of Sierra LaMar and dozens of volunteers who have been searching for the missing girl the last five years—let out an audible gasp of relief Tuesday when they heard the verdict. A jury of six men and six women found Antolin Garcia Torres guilty of the Morgan Hill teen’s murder.

The capital murder trial, which started in January, resulted in four guilty verdicts against Garcia Torres, 26. In addition to finding him guilty of murdering Sierra, who was 15 when she

disappeared in March 2012, the jury also convicted Garcia Torres on three counts of attempted kidnapping during the commission of a carjacking in relation to three incidents in the parking lots of two Safeway stores in Morgan Hill in 2009. All four counts are felonies, but the jury’s work is far from done. Jurors will also decide Garcia Torres’ fate in the trial’s penalty phase. The Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office is seeking the death penalty, and the jury will determine if Garcia Torres will be put to death or spend life in prison without the possibility of parole, prosecutor David Boyd said outside of the courtroom at the Hall of Justice in San Jose. Sierra’s family expressed mixed feelings of relief and lingering sadness after hearing the verdict. “We’re grateful for the jurors—we think they made the right decision,”

said Marlene LaMar, Sierra’s mother. “It gives us peace as a family, knowing it’s not going to happen to another child.” Steve LaMar, Sierra’s father, called the verdict “bittersweet.” “We don’t have Sierra, that’s the bitter part,” he said. “But justice is served today, for us (and) for Sierra. That gives us some form of relief, but it will never take away our grief. That will be with us forever.” The parents were flanked by a large group of family members, including daughter Danielle LaMar, and dedicated search volunteers. Sierra moved to Morgan Hill from Fremont with most of her family about six months before she disappeared. Her father still lives in Fremont, and Sierra continued to spend time with him after she moved. Authorities believe Garcia Torres kidnapped Sierra while she was walking to her school bus stop at Palm and Dougherty avenues in north Morgan Hill the morning of March 16, 2012. He killed her hours after abducting her and disposed of her remains in a discreet location that

Robert Eliason

still has not been located, Boyd said numerous times throughout the trial. Without a body or murder weapon, the DA’s case against Garcia Torres relied heavily on trace DNA evidence found in the defendant’s Volkswagen Jetta, and on Sierra’s belongings that were found off a road near her neighborhood in the days following her disappearance. Those belongings include her phone, found by itself in a field less than a mile from her home, and her bag containing personal items and the clothes she was wearing when she left home that day, according to authorities. Garcia Torres discarded these items shortly after he kidnapped Sierra, Boyd said. Garcia Torres’ defense team tried to convince the jury that Sierra ran away from home. They also attempted to sow doubt on the DA’s case by arguing the DNA evidence was not conclusive and was mishandled by detectives and county crime lab experts who processed it. Without Sierra’s body or a murder weapon, Boyd used his closing rebuttal last week to urge the jury to “reject the unreasonable, accept the reasonable” explanations for Sierra’s disappearance, fingerprints, DNA traces and other evidence that connects Antolin Garcia Torres to the crimes. “Sometimes, to support a weak argument, (people) use gimmickry to distract you from the facts,” he said, likely referring to statements made the previous day by defense attorney Al Lopez in the Hall of Justice courtroom. Lopez displayed a

“bucket of shame” to the jury during his closing argument to illustrate the reasons Garcia Torres is not guilty. Hundreds of volunteers over the last five years have scoured South County looking for a sign of Sierra’s whereabouts. Steve LaMar said these volunteers, who have come from across the Bay Area, are a “special group of people” who have become “lifelong friends.” More than 100 family members, volunteers, searchers, members of the media and court spectators attended the reading of the verdict Tuesday. The court had to open an additional courtroom with a closed circuit television broadcast of the verdict to accommodate the crowd. Garcia Torres’ defense attorneys declined to comment on the verdict as they left the courthouse. The trial ended last Thursday after 13 weeks of testimony. The jury deliberated for about a day and a half before notifying the judge on Monday that they had reached a unanimous verdict. Despite experiencing some relief from the verdict, a core group of searchers do not plan to stop looking for Sierra. Roger Nelson, a volunteer search coordinator, said his group received “scouting assignments” identifying possible search locations as recently as this weekend. They also plan to compare information from testimony during the trial with their previous search locations to identify possible search sites in the near future. They want to continue searching “to bring Sierra home to her family,” Nelson said. “The LaMars deserve justice.” He added, “We will not give up.”

FLARE FOR THE

AUTOCRATIC How the Silicon Valley internet company Cloudflare made racist online websites faster than the speed of reason BY KEN SCHWENKE PROPUBLICA

S

ince its launch in 2013, the neo-Nazi website The Daily Stormer has quickly become the go-to spot for racists on the internet. Women are whores, blacks are inferior and a shadowy Jewish cabal is organizing a genocide against white people. The site can count among its readers Dylann Roof, the white teenager who slaughtered nine African Americans in Charleston, South Carolina, in 2015, and James Jackson, who fatally stabbed an elderly black man with a sword in the streets of New York earlier this year. Traffic is up lately, too, at white supremacist sites like The Right Stuff, Iron March, American Renaissance and Stormfront, one of the oldest white nationalist sites on the internet.

The operations of such extreme sites are made possible, in part, by an otherwise very mainstream internet company—Cloudflare. Based in San Francisco, Cloudflare operates

more than 100 data centers spread across the world, serving as a sort of middleman for websites—speeding up delivery of a site’s content and protecting it from several kinds of attacks. Cloudflare says that some 10 percent of web requests flow through its network, and the company’s mainstream clients range from the FBI to the dating site OKCupid. The widespread use of Cloudflare’s services by racist groups is not an accident. Cloudflare has said it is not in the business of censoring websites and will not deny its services to even the most offensive purveyors of hate.

“A website is speech. It is not a bomb,” Cloudflare’s CEO Matthew Prince wrote in a 2013 blog post defending his company’s stance. “There is no imminent danger it creates and no provider has an affirmative obligation to monitor and make determinations about the theoretically harmful nature of speech a site may contain.” Cloudflare also has an added appeal to sites such as The Daily Stormer. It turns over to the hate sites the personal information of people who criticize their content. For instance, when a reader figures out that

11 THE LITTLE PRINCE MAY 10-16 2017 | metrosiliconvalley.com | sanjose.com | metroactive.com

Matthew Prince, CEO of Cloudflare, has defended his company’s work with racist websites by noting that speech ‘is not a bomb.’

TechCrunch via Flickr

Cloudflare is the internet company serving sites like The Daily Stormer, they sometimes write to the company to protest. Cloudflare, per its policy, then relays the name and email address of the person complaining to the hate site, often to the surprise and regret of those complaining. This has led to campaigns of harassment against those writing in to protest the offensive material. People have been threatened and harassed. A handful of people targeted by The Daily Stormer, after they or someone close to them complained to Cloudflare about the site’s content,

were contacted for comment. All but three declined to talk on the record, citing fear of further harassment or a desire to not relive it. Most said they had no idea their report would be passed on, although Cloudflare does state on the reporting form that they “will notify the site owner.” “I wasn’t aware that my information would be sent on. I suppose I, naively, had an expectation of privacy,” said Jennifer Dalton, who had complained that The Daily Stormer was asking its readers to harass Twitter users after the election.

Andrew Anglin, the owner of The Daily Stormer, has been candid about how he feels about people reporting his site for its content. “We need to make it clear to all of these people that there are consequences for messing with us,” Anglin wrote in one online post. “We are not a bunch of babies to be kicked around. We will take revenge. And we will do it now.” Asked about the company’s practice of sharing information on those who complain about racist sites, Cloudfare general counsel Doug Cramer defended the

company’s policies by saying it is “base constitutional law that people can face their accusers.” Kramer suggested that some of the people attacking Cloudflare’s customers had their own questionable motives. Hate sites such as The Daily Stormer have become a focus of intense interest since the racially divisive 2016 election — how popular they are, who supports them, how they are financed. Most of their operators supported Donald Trump and helped spread a variety of conspiracy theories aimed

12

11

at damaging Hillary Clinton. But they clearly have also become a renewed source of concern for law enforcement. In testimony Tuesday before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Chief Will D. Johnson, chair of the International Association of Chiefs of Police Human and Civil Rights Committee, highlighted the reach and threat of hate on the internet. “The internet provides extremists with an unprecedented ability to spread hate and recruit followers,” he said. “Individual racists and organized hate groups now have the power to reach a global audience of millions and to communicate among like-minded individuals easily, inexpensively, and anonymously. “Although hate speech is offensive and hurtful, the First Amendment usually protects such expression,” said Johnson, police chief in Arlington, Texas. “However, there is a growing trend to use the internet to intimidate and harass individuals on the basis of their race, religion, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, disability, or national origin.” A look at Cloudflare’s policies and operations sheds some light on how sites promoting incendiary speech and violent behavior can exist and even thrive. Jacob Sommer, a lawyer with extensive experience in internet privacy and security issues, said there is no legal requirement for a company like Cloudflare to regulate the sites on their service, though many internet service providers choose to. It comes down to a company’s sense of corporate responsibility, he said. For the most part, Sommer said, a lot of companies don’t want “this stuff ” on their networks. He said those companies resist having their networks become “a hive of hate speech.” Jonathan Vick, associate director for investigative technology and cyberhate response at the AntiDefamation League, agrees. He said many hosts want to get hate sites off their networks. “Even the most intransigent of them, when they’re given evidence of something really problematic, they do respond,” he said. 12 CLOUDFLARE

Feeling Froggy Silicon Valley loves to put on a progressive front. Facebook offers photo filters to support marriage equality or reproductive rights. Twitter created a Black Lives Matter emoji that pops up anytime someone hashtags the antipolice brutality movement. Yet these same platforms that broadcast liberal causes also enable neo-Nazis to rebrand themselves as the “alt-right.” In this piece, we look at how Cloudflare—a Bay Areabased network operator with a major data center in San Jose—serves up hate by not only hosting sites that champion misogyny and white supremacy, but by turning over the personal information of anyone who reports abuse. They certainly don’t have to. Google dropped popular YouTuber PewDiePie for making anti-Semitic remarks. Twitter banned Brietbart “tech editor” Milo Yiannopolous for goading a legion of racist trolls into harassing African-American SNL star Leslie Jones. Rather than quelling the kind of reactionary politics

that gave rise to President Donald Trump, a certain element in Silicon Valley fuels it. White nationalist Richard Spencer likes to tell reporters that the typical alt-right adherent is a tech-savvy IT guy in his 20s. Indeed, Andrew Angler, who runs a neo-Nazi website called The Daily Stormer, claims that most of his traffic comes from Santa Clara County—home to Apple and Intel, the very heart of Silicon Valley. Silicon Valley is rife with examples that prove their point. Leading up to Trump’s election, Oculus founder Palmer Luckey poured cash into a nonprofit that generated racist, sexist memes and disseminated them on sites like 4chan and Reddit. Former Reddit CEO Ellen Pao stepped down after weathering what she called “one of the largest trolling attacks in history” from Redditors who threatened to rape and kill her for cracking down on hate speech. The U.S. Constitution enshrines the right to even the vilest expression. Of course. But Silicon Valley so often goes beyond tolerance to complicity. —Jennifer Wadsworth

13 Anglin, its owner, had used the site to allegedly harass a woman in the town of Whitefish, Montana. After his complaint, Ernest wound up on the receiving end of about two dozen harassing emails or phone calls. “Fuck off and die,” read one email. “Go away and die,” read another. Those commenting on the site speculated on everything from Ernest’s hygiene to asking, suggestively, why it appeared in a Facebook post that Ernest had a child at his house.

‘I wasn’t aware that my information would be sent on. I suppose I, naively, had an expectation of privacy’ Ernest said the emails and phone calls he received were not traumatizing, but they were worrying. “His threats of harassment can turn into violence,” he said of Anglin. Anglin appears quite comfortable with his arrangement with Cloudflare. It doesn’t cost him much, either—just $200 a month, according to public posts on the site. “[A]ny complaints filed against the site go to Cloudflare, and Cloudflare then sends me an email telling me someone said I was doing something bad and that it is my responsibility to figure out if I am doing that,” he wrote in a 2015 post on his site. “Cloudflare does not regulate content, so it is meaningless.” Representatives from Rackspace and GoDaddy, two popular web hosts, said they try to regulate the

inception in 2009, much of it from some of the most prominent venture capital firms and tech companies in the country. The service is what’s known as a content delivery network, and offers protection from several cyber threats, including “denial of service” attacks, where hundreds of zombie computers make requests to a website at once, overwhelming it and bringing it down. Company officials have said Cloudflare’s core belief is in the free and open nature of the internet. But given its outsize role in protecting a range of websites, Cloudflare has found itself the target of critics. In 2015, the company came under fire from the hacker collective Anonymous for reportedly allowing Islamic State group propaganda sites on its network. At the time, Prince, the company’s CEO, dismissed the claim as “armchair analysis by kids,” and told Fox Business that the company would not knowingly accept money from a terrorist organization. Kramer, in an interview with ProPublica, reiterated that the company would not accept money from ISIS. But he said that was not for moral or ethical reasons. Rather, he said, Cloudflare did not have dealings with terrorists groups such as ISIS because there are significant and specific laws restricting them from doing so. In the end, Kramer said, seedy and objectionable sites made up a tiny fraction of the company’s clients. “We’ve got 6 million customers,” he said. “It’s easy to find these edge cases.” One of the people whose information had been shared with The Daily Stormer’s operators said his complaint had been posted on the site, but that he was “not interested in talking about my experience as it’s not something I want to revisit.” Someone else whose information was posted on the site said that while she did get a few odd emails, she wasn’t aware her information had been made public. She followed up to say she was going to abandon her email account now that she knew. “The entire situation makes me feel uneasy,” she said. Scott Ernest had complained about The Daily Stormer’s conduct after

ONE FOR THE KISSER Proud racist Richard Spencer went viral after being punched in the face during a January interview. kinds of sites on their services. For Rackspace, that means drawing the line at hosting white supremacist content or hate speech. For GoDaddy, that means not hosting the sort of abusive publication of personal information that Anglin frequently engages in. “There is certainly content that, while we respect freedom of speech, we don’t want to be associated with it,” said Arleen Hess, senior manager of GoDaddy’s digital crimes unit. Both companies also said they would not pass along contact information for people who complain about offensive content to the groups generating it. Amazon Web Services, one of the most popular web hosts and content delivery networks, would not say how they handle abuse complaints beyond pointing to an “acceptable use” policy that restricts objectionable, abusive

and harmful content. They also pointed to their abuse form, which says the company will keep your contact information private. According to Vick at the ADL, the fact that Cloudflare takes money from Anglin is different from if he’d just used their free service. “That’s a direct relationship,” he said. “That raises questions in my mind.” Some companies offering other services vital to success on the web have chosen not to do business with Anglin’s The Daily Stormer. Google, PayPal and Coinbase, for instance, have chosen to cut off his accounts rather than support his activities. Getting booted around from service to service can make it hard to run a hate site, but Cloudflare gives the sites a solid footing. And, by The Daily Stormer’s account, advice and assurances. In a post, the site’s architect, Andrew Auernheimer, said he had personal

relationships with people at Cloudflare, and they had assured him the company would work to protect the site in a variety of ways — including by not turning over data to European courts. Cloudflare has data centers in European countries such as Germany, which have strict hate speech and privacy laws. Company officials offered differing responses when asked about Auernheimer’s post. Kramer, Cloudflare’s general counsel, said he had no knowledge of employee conversations with Auernheimer. Later, in an email, the company said Auernheimer was a wellknown hacker, and that as a result at least one senior company official “has chatted with him on occasion and has spoken to him about Cloudflare’s position on not censoring the internet.” A former Cloudflare employee,

Ryan Lackey, said in an interview that while he doesn’t condone a lot of what Auernheimer does, he did on occasion give technical advice as a friend and helped some of the Stormer’s issues get resolved. “I am hardcore libertarian/ classical liberal about free speech — something like Daily Stormer has every right to publish, and it is better for everyone if all ideas are out on the internet to do battle in that sphere,” he said. Vick at the ADL agrees that Anglin has a right to publish, but said people have the right to hold to task the internet companies that enable him. “Andrew Anglin has the right to be out there and say what he wants to say. But the people who object to what he has to say have a right to object as well,” he said. “You should be able to respond to everybody in the chain.”

An inside look at San Jose politics

Spring Brings Wave of Police Shootings

MUM’S THE WORD Cannabis attorney Ben Rice advises anyone who isn’t

a citizen to avoid admitting they have ever used cannabis.

Cannabis Attorney: Noncitizens Should Play Coy on Pot BY TOM GOGOLA Federal efforts to ramp up deportations and crack down on cannabis could have profound implications on any noncitizens who grow or smoke—even for medical reasons. A case now making its way through court is illustrative of the dilemma. Cannabis attorney Omar Figueroa is defending an undocumented man faced with deportation and being separated from his family for growing cannabis in Northern California. To defend his client, Figueroa enlisted an immigration lawyer to write a letter to the prosecutor “explaining why a misdemeanor marijuana conviction, which may not have been a big deal in the Obama years, would be a nightmare these days,” Figueroa says via email. Over the past decade, noncitizens were encouraged out of the shadows

under President Obama’s so-called Dreamers’ initiative, while a societal shift toward cannabis acceptance coaxed legacy growers out of the shadows in California and elsewhere. Now anyone who is a noncitizen and cannabis user or grower can face permanent expulsion under new directives from President Donald Trump and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) that call on prosecutors to throw the book at them. Where Obama pushed for prosecutorial discretion in deference to a humane view of the immigrant experience in America—and not tearing apart families in the process—Trump has flipped the call for discretion to a bullhorn urging maximum punishment for the undocumented. It’s something that could even impact those in the country legally, says cannabis attorney Ben Rice.

“It would be really easy for any noncitizens to misunderstand Prop 64, which legalized recreational pot in California,” he says. “There’s very little value in it to them. It’s a trap in that way because few understand that the California law doesn’t protect them from federal prohibition.” Rice insists that noncitizens should not tell a border or immigration official that they have ever tried pot. “They don’t even have to be caught smoking, or using, or growing. All they need to do is admit. Just the admission can get them deported or excluded.” Cases do vary across the state, however. Rice points to a memo written more than five years ago by District Attorney Jeff Rosen, who instructed deputies to consider “collateral consequences” in pursuing charges.

San Jose police shot three people this past week, wounding two and killing another. The most recent shooting took place early morning Sunday, when officers returned fire at a gunman in a mobile home park off Tully Road. The latest incident marked the San Jose Police Department's fifth officerinvolved shooting in 2017—one of which was deadly. On May 3, a 16-year department Eddie Garcia veteran shot and killed a double homicide suspect in Willow Glen after a dramatic standoff. Mira Tatlic, 24, killed his ex-girlfriend’s parents—Naren and Raynah Prabhu— and held their 13-year-old son hostage before Officer Jacob Morris fired the fatal round. Tatlic was pronounced dead on the scene. No officers were hurt. Police Chief Eddie Garcia told San Jose Inside that SJPD believes Tatlic bought his weapon online without the proper paperwork. “We will track that gun to the ends of the earth,” Garcia said. On May 2, an officer shot a man involved in a family fight in San Jose’s eastern foothills. On April 21, police also shot a 28-year-old man who allegedly brandished two knives before turning one on himself. Before that, on March 17, cops shot a naked, caulk gun-wielding man after a miles-long car chase that left a wake of damaged vehicles. Garcia said the officers who fired their service weapons this past week were equipped with body cameras. He added that those recordings should show the use of firearms was justified. Nearly 400 people have died at the hands of American law enforcement to date in 2017, according to newsmining database Killed by Police. The number of police officers killed in the line of duty in 2017 stands at 43, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page. —Jennifer Wadsworth

THE LARAMIE PROJECT Wed, 8pm, Free Nitery Theater, Stanford

In 1998, Matthew Shepard, a gay college student from the University of Wyoming, was kidnapped, beaten and left for dead. The senseless hate crime served as the impetus for The Laramie Project—originally produced by Moisés Kaufman and the Tectonic Theater Project. The play synthesizes more than 200 interviews conducted in the university’s surrounding college town of Laramie. The play explores how the local community reacted to the murder and paints a picture intolerance as well as understanding in rural America. The capstone project of two soon-to-begraduating students, the production is free and open to the public. (NV)

When it comes to taking his stand-up to the next level, Canadian-born Samir Khullar— b.k.a. Sugar Sammy—has a winning strategy. Fluent in English, French, Punjabi and Hindi, Sammy has found success deploying his multilinguistic comedy for crowds in North America, Europe and Asia. Speaking four languages not only helps Khullar spread his brand of comedy; it informs his jokes as well, with many of his bits revolving around the politics of language and what it means to be a Canadian-Indian living in the province of Quebec, where laws sometimes require French to be used instead of English. (NV)

The Pear Theatre is once hosting its annual showcase of original short plays by local playwrights. The Pear Slices festival runs Thursday through Sunday to the end of May—with all eight plays performed each evening. This year, there’s a hardboiled detective noir sendup, Deuce Cooper: The Bloomfield Case, by Pear veteran Paul Braverman; Elyce Melmon probes the divide between an artist mother and her captain of the tech industry son in For Art’s Sake; and two sisters must deal with the death of their brother while sorting through his belongings in Leah Halper’s Meantime In Between Time. (NV)

Three Bad Jacks are bringing their greaser style back to San Jose. The rockabilly band recently caught some flak for their liberal use of pyrotechnics at a club in Phoenix, so The Caravan should be safe this time. Luckily the music is pretty great on its own. For the most part, Three Bad Jacks belt out a stock rockabilly sound that fans of the genre have come to expect. However, songs like “Noah and Jacob’s Song” prove the band can also deliver more folky music as well. The band will mostly play material from their most recent album Pictures and Memories from Home. (YK)

The recently reopened Hammer Theatre Center—now operated by San Jose State University’s College of Humanities and the Arts—will officially debut its brand new, state-of-the-art Meyer Constellation Sound System during this production of Felix Mendelssohn’s Elijah. The oratorio follows the life of its titular character, the biblical prophet Elijah, from his dialogues with God to his glorious ascent to heaven. This multimedia operatic staging will feature contributions from the university’s Opera Theatre program, the SJSU School of Music & Dance, SJSU Choir, and the Department of Digital Media Art. The ensemble will be led by the nationally acclaimed baritone Eugene Brancoveanu. (NV)

Eerie Airs CREATURE FEATURE Santa Cruz-based Creature Skateboards and crew will premier their latest document of destruction.

The Ritz to host screening party for ‘The Creature Video’ BY TAD MALONE

O

NE OF THE gnarliest skateboarding companies around is premiering its new video this week at The Ritz in San Jose. Known for its rough-around-theedges but equally well-rounded approach to terrain, Creature Skateboards is currently crossing the country showing off its new fulllength skate film, The Creature Video, including a special stop in San Jose. More than two years in the making, The Creature Video brings together the team’s (the ‘fiends,’ as they are affectionately known) wide variety of skills and styles in a mind-

blowing display of skating prowess. Featuring tried and true Creature team members, including transition master Darren Navarrette, criminally underrated Taylor Bingaman, and allaround miracle-maker David Gravette, The Creature Video also presents a platform for younger members of the squad to shine. Fresh faces like Argentinian street and bowl skater Milton Martinez and Norwegian newcomer Kevin Bækkel both awe in their respective parts. But much of the credit for the engrossing video is owed to the imagination of team leader and art director Lee Charron. What makes Creature Skateboards so compelling as a brand—or even more, a lifestyle—is hard to pin down. Combining a punk-rock antiestablishment ethos, with a more spontaneous approach to “big-air”

skating, Creature could be considered both hesh and not at all. For the uninitiated, “hesh” refers to an older skating style—if not a gang—of dirtier, wilder skaters who cut a purposeful contrast to the cleaner corporate types. “I don’t think we are flying such a rough flag anymore, but internally, Creature is always hesh,” Charron says, laughing. “Technically, I am sort of the Creature brand manager, art director, and film director. I sort of do all of it”, says Charron. Whereas most skate companies have different people for different roles, Charron sees the good and bad of his unique position. “I don’t have to run things by people, so it’s nice that it can kind of be my own vision,” Charon says, adding: “but that also means it’s a lot of work.” Charon has always been a jackof-all-trades. After he started doing illustration work for NHS board company, eventually becoming the art director for Santa Cruz Skateboards in the early 2000s, he was given the chance to help revive

the then-defunct Creature. Originally an offshoot of NHS, Creature was started in 1994 by legendary skater—and now equally legendary artist—Russ Pope. But like many skate teams, the original members quickly moved on to greener, gnarlier pastures, forcing Creature back onto the shelf. Then, in 2005, Lee Charron and friend/pro-skater Darren Navarrette set about bringing Creature Skateboards back to life. Now, more than a decade later, Creature has grown into one of the most recognizable and talented skateboarding companies— reinforcing the importance of rugged authenticity in skating as well as artfully navigating the transition into more mainstream exposure. “When we started, I just wanted to keep it real small and make something that was really honest,” Charron recalls. “Now here we are, 12 years later and the team’s gigantic, the board line is gigantic. It’s amazing, but it’s definitely not something we expected.” One could call it luck—which no doubt plays a role—but that would be a disservice to the sheer force of talent of the Creature Fiends and the imagination of Charron. Known for its unique mix of transition and big-gap skating, punctuated by a Death-metal meets Big Daddy Roth aesthetic, Creature Skateboards can count itself among the handful of skateboard brands that have carved out a niche in the already pigeonholed skateboard subculture. “We’re definitely not trying to be anybody else,” says Charon. “That’s something that sets us apart,” he continues, adding: “I see companies that have been around for awhile that are emulating whoever they can, when really I think it’s about being honest. Honesty appeals to people.” As brand manager, Charron wouldn’t give too much away about the new video. He did, however, suggest that besides a cameo from skate legend and longtime Santa Cruz rider Jason Jessee, it features “one of the craziest things I’ve ever seen.” The premier party will also feature DJs and drinking—natch.

metroactive FILM

Haunted House CURSED Helen Mirren stars as Sarah Winchester in the forthcoming film ‘Winchester,’ slated for release in 2018.

‘Winchester’ to provide a supernatural take on the San Jose landmark BY RICHARD VON BUSACK

T

HE RENOWNED Helen Mirren is playing one of the strangest denizens in the history of this valley, Sarah Winchester. Slated for a 2018 opening, Winchester stars Mirren and will feature scenes shot on the premises of San Jose’s Winchester Mystery House. Mirren, along with identical twin directors Michael and Peter Spierig (Predestination) were recently in town to do location photography— shooting in the actual rooms of the

strange, 160-room Victorian home, flying drones to get sky views and meeting with the press. Soon, the ensemble returns to the Spierigs’ native Australia to complete the film in Melbourne. There, they’ve built a replica version of the house. Nearby open fields will mimic the valley as it was in 1906. Winchester’s mansion, named Llanada Villa (“Flatland House”), is encroached by development today. Across the boulevard is a shiny, three-story office building with the word SPLUNK on it. Face the house in its front yard and see topiary, a magnificent Canary Island date palm and several fountains. The house is rich with beveled glass and fish-scale shingles. The conical “witch’s hat” sits atop

a corner of the pile. Inside this wooden nose cone, Winchester held her seances. It is, the tour guide claimed, a room the night-watch guards prefer to avoid. It’s quite dark in Winchester’s house. Inside, one crouches like a miner, climbing up the switchback half-steps that the poor woman had built to favor her arthritis. In the unfinished corridors, through which one scuttles like a rat in the walls, a gradual feeling arises that it might be healthier to be outside. In a meeting after the tour, Mirren and the Spierigs didn’t spoil the plot, but locals knew the background. In the Gilded Age, Winchester came from back east. She was in mourning for husband and her child. Her vast fortune came from that most effective killing machine, the Winchester rifle. A medium allegedly told the widow that continued construction on her mansion could baffle the Indian ghosts slain by her husband’s

weapons. For 36 years, night and day, the workmen never stopped. In this fictionalized version, a psychiatrist ( Jason Clarke) comes to visit. He begins to suspect there are some uninvited guests with them. “You’ll see why,” Mirren said at the small press conference, “but there’s a reason why she needs him in the house. She chooses him.” It’s not every day that you get to see the queen, is it? All eyes were on the actress, in silver and gray with silver hair. I wondered if she had any belief in the supernatural. “No,” Mirren said, firmly. “But I believe that human beings are infinitely driven by the power of their imaginations, above all else. And that power is endless.” Earlier, Mirren had said, “The whole question about Sarah is ‘Why?’ I don’t know if she was superstitious. All I could think of was that she had a feeling of guilt or empathy for the people who had died by this very thing that had made her very rich. The part of Sarah is an incredible gift, it’s like playing the queen. There is so much known about her, and yet at the center is a character of utter mystery. For an actress trying to get an understanding of what this person is, there is some research material.” The Spierigs cite Mary Jo Ignoffo’s Captive of the Labyrinth as inspiration. “But there’s nothing like coming to this house and feeling the personality of the person who created it. The charm of this house is that it has big open spaces, and yet it seems quite tiny inside. There’s a sense of claustrophobia for such a large place. I’m sure you experienced it today. In a minute, you’re down the rabbit hole. There’s different proportions, and colors. There’s a lot of light, but so much shadow.” The movie should have room not just for the speculation on Winchester’s motives, but also for some honor for the author of this massive building. “Building this house was her art,” Mirren argued. Sarah Winchester was a successful farmer. Some like to sneak her into the list of valley innovators, given her talent as a grower, and all the modern innovations she had in her building. Within the framework of a thriller genre as surefire as Winchester rifles, Winchester may be the first chance for the movies to commemorate this haunted, driven woman’s spirit.

THE FIFTH ELEMENT

OKLAHOMA CITY

(1997) Colorful chic rubbish, like Barbarella, but not as smart or kinky; it’s back for a 20th anniversary screening in anticipation of director Luc Besson’s upcoming Vegas-inspace type of thing, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. Here, the aliens work for someone called Mr. Shadow, and they look like groupers with acromegaly. They hang around in schools like groupers, too. They show up like landlords every 300 years, ready to take over the Earth. Only the mysterious Fifth Element (in addition to the ancient quartet of air, fire, water and earth) keeps them at bay. The revelation of the nature of this element is a mortal insult to the intelligence of any reasonably serious science fiction fan. Everyman hero Korben Dallas (Bruce Willis) is still unshaven even in the year 2300, while the missing element is embodied by an Aphrodite figure: a squeaking superhero goddess named Leeloo (Milla Jovovich), with an Orange Crush-colored shag and a plastic jumper that makes her look like Raggedy Ann 3000. Leeloo and Willis fight not just aliens but their fifth columnists as well, most notably the millionaire Zorg (Gary Oldman). The comic relief is provided by Ruby Rhod (Chris Tucker), a black intergalactic TV star with a rattling line of patter. Unfortunately, Rhod sticks around. He's there during the battle scenes, emitting five-octaves-abovemiddle-C screeches of panic. Despite the computer-generated towering future cityscape, the film gives zero sense of how tomorrow might work. If there are 20 billion people, they all seem to be living in the same building. (Plays May 14 and May 17 Valleywide; Fathom Events). (RvB)

ROMAN HOLIDAY/SABRINA

(1954/1953) Willowy Audrey Hepburn stars as a Ruritanian princess on the run in Roman Holiday; reporter Gregory Peck is on her trail. This trifle is energized by the location photography of Rome—a great novelty at the time and a feat to pull off during the middle of a heat wave. Henri Alekan, the great cinematographer, co-photographed. Sabrina. Audrey Hepburn plays the daughter of a chauffeur on a Long Island estate. She has nursed a crush on the family's younger playboy son (William Holden), but the responsible elder brother (Bogart) eventually turns her head. Billy Wilder's mix of the mordant and the playful was just about right here—it’s a bracing adult fairy tale. (May 12-14 in Palo Alto at the Stanford Theatre.) (RvB)

Shaming and sickening, but it must be seen. Barak Goodman’s documentary is about the domestic terrorist attack on April 19, 1995 at the Murrah building in Oklahoma City, with a death toll of 168, 19 of whom were children. Goodman insists that the road to the catastrophe began at Ruby Ridge, Idaho. There, a skirmish between an off the grid family of white supremacists and law enforcement officers inflamed fears that the Jews were about to take over. Enter Gulf War One vet Timothy McVeigh, a stripling who’d bounced out of Ranger school. The drifter was drawn to the next battle lines at the Mt. Carmel compound in Waco, between the ATF and an armed-tothe-teeth and polygamous cult leader calling himself David Koresh. Almost 100 of the Branch Davidian cult were immolated in a fire of their own making (though the lawmens’ tear gas cylinders triggered the fire). McVeigh felt that the only way he could dry his tears was with bloodstained hands. Channeling what he hoped was his inner Tom Cruise, he later told interviewers that they couldn’t handle the truth—that one man had planned the attack, which, in his view absolutely had to have a body count to make a difference. This was somewhat true: one man had the guts, at least, to threaten his two accomplices into helping him, over the several months it took him to assemble the ingredients. Good FBI work found the culprits, and McVeigh was caught driving a licenseless getaway vehicle with an illegal gun in his holster. It’s not this PBS documentary’s lead that bleeds; the toll of the great patriot’s bomb is taken at the end. There, the very composed Helena Garrett talks about the death of her young son, and why she didn’t confront McVeigh in the courtroom: “My story is more powerful than my fist.” The smoke from the explosion has never cleared. One a conspiracy theory starts, no one can squash it, but Goodman’s outline leaves little doubt that the Murrah bombing was the result of a chain of events amplified by hysterical overreaction and white-nationalist twaddle. A tidbit is that McVeigh’s credulousness led him to visit Area 51 in search of the saucermen. Thus, the childhood nickname “Noodle” fit not just the skinny physique but the intellectual capacity of this murderer, boggled by the childishly illustrated racist sci-fi he lapped up. Sadly, there’s a legion waiting to take his place, standing tall, with firm jaws and empty skulls. (Netflix) (RvB)

REVIEW

WHA? Yeah… ‘King Arthur: Legend of the Sword’ makes no sense.

Once and Future Stink THE FABLED ROUND Table is unveiled. One of the knights of Camelot guesses what this odd piece of furniture is: “Is it a wheel of cheese?” Verily, forsooth, my lord, and ripe ’tis. Director and co-writer Guy Ritchie, long-time auteur of head-butting cinema, loses the thees and thous in favor of a present-day vernacular—“Hands on the hilt, stupid!” the then no-name Arthur is ordered, as he prepares to grasp Excalibur. The rewriters added Moses to the story. After his father Uther (Eric Bana) is slain, baby Arthur drifts into ancient Londinium on an open boat on the Thames. In adulthood, played by Charlie Hunnam of Sons of Anarchy, Arthur is mistaken for just another whoreson bordello-protector. But his murderous uncle King Vortigern (Jude Law) must shed his nephew’s blood to satiate evil spirits (a moat dwelling threegirl octopus-eel monster) to claim the destructive power of the mages. Arthur and his street gang head into the forest with Kung Fu George, England’s only Asian, played by Tom Wu) as well as the most likeably laid back Goose Fat Bill (Aiden Gillen). We go straight from King Arthur to Robin Hood. And to lead the king to be through the Joseph Campbell

Memorial Parcourse, Astrid Bergès-Frisbey materializes as the pouty mage who turns out to be Guinevere. As a beastmaster with sacred snakes, she’s too powerful to be kissed. She’s more or less the only woman in this movie, and she keeps a good distance. King Arthur: Law plays it as straight Legend of as anyone could in this the Sword dim mixmaster of pixels, this degraded mashup PG-13, 126 Mins. of superhero and sorcery Valleywide movies cut like a trailer for itself, this nest of 200foot serpents and flying 3-D shrapnel. He shows moods and regrets. By contrast, Hunnam’s look of indomitability gets a workout—it rarely changes, whether vowing revenge or being attacked by giant bats. The joke, as it stands, is that he really doesn’t want to go through with it all. And you thought Zack Snyder’s Superman was a mope! The cockney-dickhead approach to Arthurian lore has never been tried before, and if there’s one takeaway, it’s this: when one tries to outrun a famous satire, in this case Monty Python and the Holy Grail, you end up being worse off than if you pretended to ignore it. —Richard Von Busack

Brazilian Blowout GIRL FROM IPANEMA Anat Cohen is actually from Tel Aviv. But lately, she’s been enchanted by the choro music of Rio.

Anat Cohen puts the clarinet in Copacabana at Cafe Stritch BY NICK VERONIN

A

CCLAIMED JAZZ clarinetist Anat Cohen has always connected with Brazilian music, though it took moving across an ocean for her to realize it.

“I heard it growing up in Israel,” she says, noting that she often encountered samba tunes with Hebrew lyrics in her native Tel Aviv. “I just didn’t know it was Brazilian music.” Raised in a musical family, her brothers and she spent their

formative years learning to play instruments. She took to woodwinds, learning the saxophone in addition to the clarinet—which she is known for the world over. Cohen has won numerous accolades for her playing. She’s been named “Clarinetist of the Year” by the Jazz Journalists Association nine times since 2007. Cohen didn’t hear Brazilian sambas with Portuguese lyrics until she moved to the U.S., where she attended the famed Berklee School of Music in Boston. She was enchanted by the rhythm of the language and the “chk-chka-chk-chka” beat.

Her affinity for the music of Brazil explains how she found her way to collaborating with Trio Brasileiro. Comprising three of Brazil’s most celebrated musicians—guitarist Douglas Lora, mandolinist Dudu Maia, and percussionist Alexandre Lora—the three-piece has garnered national attention since forming in 2011. Cohen plays with the trio at a San Jose Jazz-hosted show this Friday at Cafe Stritch. Since coming together to record a collaborative album in 2016, Cohen and Trio Brasileiro have forged a strong musical bond through the tradition of choro music, which originated in Rio de Janeiro. “That’s the music that pushed me to be a clarinet player,” Cohen muses about choro. The lively and energetic style is both complex and accessible, requiring dexterity and

an ability to improvise on the fly, as well as a playfulness and strong sense of rhythm—making it an attractive genre for such an accomplished jazz musician as Cohen. “I love the whole way the music moves around between musicians,” Cohen says of choro. “It can be very challenging, it can be very emotional. It can make you dance, it can make you cry.” All of these aspects of the Brazilian musical style are on full display in a live video Cohen recorded with Trio Brasileiro—a performance of “Choro Pesado.” In a way, the swinging track recalls the tune played by the house band at the Mos Eisley Cantina—only with a more tropical vibe and infused with Between the Buried and Meesque avant-garde metal sweeps. In addition to the intoxicating fluidity of the clarinet, guitar and mandolin, the percussion work of Alexandre Lora is particularly impressive. Playing the pandeiro—a little hand drum that to the untrained eye might look like a tambourine—he holds down the beat with aplomb. In his hands, Cohen says, the pandeiro is “a whole drumset.” Cohen says the music she makes with Trio Brasileiro is inspired as much by the sounds of Rio as it is by heavy metal, classical music and Pink Floyd. Asked whether the music she makes with Trio Brasileiro is inherently more diverse than other forms due to its trans-Atlantic amalgamation of sounds, she deflects. “All music is influenced by all music, I would say—especially in this day and age. People are traveling the world by pressing a button.” And that’s a wonderful thing in Cohen’s opinion. “Music is a beautiful mirror to people’s personalities,” she says, adding that she views music as a never-ending journey of self-discovery. “You think that you’re studying music, but you’re really studying yourself.”

AdviceAmy@AOL.com MAY 10-16, 2017 | metrosiliconvalley.com | sanjose.com | metroactive.com

I got in an argument with my boyfriend about the reason not to have sex outside our relationship. He said he wouldn’t do it because he wouldn’t want to hurt me. I said he shouldn’t want to be with anybody else, but he said that’s just not realistic for guys. Are men really just these unfeeling sex machines?—Dismayed Male sexuality is about as sentimental as an oar. In fact, if there’s one secret guys try to keep from women, it’s this: A man can really love a woman and still want to spend the afternoon wrecking the bed with her BFF, her well-preserved mom, and her sister. As awful as that probably sounds, men’s evolved lust for sexual variety isn’t something you and other women should take personally. Evolutionary psychologists David Buss and David Schmitt explain that genetically speaking, it’s generally in a man’s interest to pursue a “short-term sexual strategy”—pounce and bounce, coitus and, um, avoid us—with as many women as possible. This isn’t to say men evolved to be entirely without discernment. Because “beautiful” features (like pillowy lips and an hourglass bod) reflect health and fertility, if a man has a choice in casual sexmates, he’ll go for a hot

woman, but if he doesn’t, he’ll go for a woman with a pulse. However, Buss and Schmitt explain that there are times when it’s to a man’s advantage to pursue a “long-term sexual strategy,” or commitment to one woman. It’s a quality-over-quantity strategy to want a woman with “high mate value” (one who’s physically and psychologically desirable enough to hold out for a guy who’ll commit). Other factors include seeking the emotional, social, and cooperative benefits of a partnership and wanting to retire from the time-, energy-, and resource-suck of working the ladies on Match.com like a second job. In light of this, think about what your boyfriend’s really telling you by opting for “Honey, where do I sign away my sexual freedom?” This isn’t dismaying, degrading, or any of the other bummer D-words. In fact, it’s really romantic, considering that men evolved to be sexual foragers.

My boyfriend of five years has gotten super moody. He picks fights with me and even gets a little verbally abusive and condescending. I know he’s a good guy, and I want to help him sort through his stuff, but I’m finding myself flirting with other guys and fantasizing about cheating on him. I am not the kind of person who cheats, and I feel terribly guilty even having those thoughts.—Demeaned Ideally, “I’ve never felt this way before!” reflects something a little more romantic than longing to tunnel out of your relationship with a sharpened spoon. I wrote recently about a cocktail of personality traits that are associated with a susceptibility to infidelity in a person—basically those of a narcissistic, lazy con artist with all the empathy of a bent tack. That finding is from research by evolutionary psychologists Todd Shackelford and David Buss, who also studied the emotional circumstances in a relationship that might lead one of the partners to cheat or to want to (even if that person isn’t some ethically bankrupt, empathy-deficient turdpiece). They found that there are two personality characteristics someone can have that make a relationship particularly miserable. One is emotional

instability—marked by mood swings and a gloomy obsessiveness about things beyond one’s control. As Buss explains in “The Dangerous Passion,” when emotional instability is paired with quarrelsomeness (and all of the ugly condescension, sniping, and emotional neglect that goes with it), relationships become “cauldrons of conflict.” This, in turn, raises the odds that one’s partner will seek solace in the, um, back seat of another. Part of being in a relationship is taking out the trash when it starts to overflow—including the psychological trash spilling out of the dumpster that has become “you.” Talk compassionately with your boyfriend about the need for him to start figuring out and fixing whatever’s causing him to act out in toxic ways.

FREE WILL ASTROLOGY ARIES (March 21-April 19): The process by which Zoo Jeans are manufactured is unusual. First, workers wrap and secure sheets of denim around car tires or big rubber balls, and take their raw creations to the Kamine Zoo in Hitachi City, Japan. There the denim-swaddled objects are thrown into pits where tigers or lions live. As the beasts roughhouse with their toys, they rip holes in the cloth. Later, the material is retrieved and used to sew the jeans. Might this story prove inspirational for you in the coming weeks? I suspect it will. Here's one possibility: You could arrange for something wild to play a role in shaping an influence you will have an intimate connection with. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): "Kiss the flame and

it is yours," teased the poet Thomas Lux. What do you think he was hinting at? It's a metaphorical statement, of course. You wouldn't want to literally thrust your lips and tongue into a fire. But according to my reading of the astrological omens, you might benefit from exploring its meanings. Where to begin? May I suggest you visualize making out with the steady burn at the top of a candle? My sources tell me that doing so at this particular moment in your evolution will help kindle a new source of heat and light in your deep self—a fresh fount of glowing power that will burn sweet and strong like a miniature sun.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Your symbol of power

during the next three weeks is a key. Visualize it. What picture pops into your imagination? Is it a bejeweled golden key like what might be used to access an old treasure chest? Is it a rustic key for a garden gate or an oversized key for an ornate door? Is it a more modern thing that locks and unlocks car doors with radio waves? Whatever you choose, Gemini, I suggest you enshrine it in as an inspirational image in the back of your mind. Just assume that it will subtly inspire and empower you to find the metaphorical "door" that leads to the next chapter of your life story.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): You are free to reveal yourself in your full glory. For once in your life, you have cosmic clearance to ask for everything you want without apology. This is the LATER you have been saving yourself for. Here comes the reward for the hard work you've been doing that no one has completely appreciated. If the universe has any prohibitions or inhibitions to impose, I don't know what they are. If old karma has been preventing the influx of special dispensations and helpful X-factors, I suspect that old karma has at least temporarily been neutralized. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): "I don't want to be at the mercy of my emotions," said Irish writer Oscar Wilde. "I want to use them, to enjoy them, and to dominate them." In my opinion, that may be one of the most radical vows ever formulated. Is it even possible for us human beings to gracefully manage our unruly flow of feelings? What you do in the coming weeks could provide evidence that the answer to that question might be yes. According to my reading of the astrological omens, you are now in a position to learn more about this high art than ever before.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Africa's highest

mountain is Mount Kilimanjaro. Though it's near the equator, its peak is covered year-round with glaciers. In 2001, scientists predicted that global warming would melt them all by 2015. But that hasn't happened. The ice cap is still receding slowly. It could endure for a while, even though it will eventually disappear. Let's borrow this scenario as a metaphor for your use, Virgo. First, consider the possibility that a certain thaw in your personal sphere isn't unfolding as quickly as you anticipated. Second, ruminate on the likelihood that it will, however, ultimately come to pass. Third, adjust your plans accordingly.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Will sex be humdrum and predictable in the coming weeks? No! On the contrary. Your interest in wandering out to the frontiers of erotic play could rise quite high. You may be animated and experimental in your approach to intimate communion, whether it's with another person or with yourself. Need any suggestions? Check out the "butterflies-in-flight" position or the "spinning wheel of roses" maneuver. Try the "hum-and-chuckle kissing dare" or the

By ROB BREZSNY week of May 10

"churning radiance while riding the rain cloud" move. Or just invent your own variations and give them funny names that add to the adventure.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Right now the word "simplicity" is irrelevant. You've got silky profundities to play with, slippery complications to relish, and lyrical labyrinths to wander around in. I hope you use these opportunities to tap into more of your subterranean powers. From what I can discern, your deep dark intelligence is ready to provide you with a host of fresh clues about who you really are and where you need to go. P.S.: You can become better friends with the shadows without compromising your relationship to the light. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): You can bake

your shoes in the oven at 350 degrees for 40 minutes, but that won't turn them into loaves of bread. Know what I'm saying, Sagittarius? Just because a chicken has wings doesn't mean it can fly over the rainbow. Catch my drift? You'll never create a silk purse out of dental floss and dead leaves. That's why I offer you the following advice: In the next two weeks, do your best to avoid paper tigers, red herrings, fool's gold, fake news, Trojan horses, straw men, pink elephants, convincing pretenders, and invisible bridges. There'll be a reward if you do: close encounters with shockingly beautiful honesty and authenticity that will be among your most useful blessings of 2017.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Of all the signs

of the zodiac, you Capricorns are the least likely to believe in mythical utopias like Camelot or El Dorado or Shambhala. You tend to be uber-skeptical about the existence of legendary vanished riches like the last Russian czar's Fabergé eggs or King John's crown jewels. And yet if wonderlands and treasures like those really do exist, I'm betting that some may soon be discovered by Capricorn explorers. Are there unaccounted-for masterpieces by Georgia O'Keeffe buried in a basement somewhere? Is the score of a lost Mozart symphony tucked away in a seedy antique store? I predict that your tribe will specialize in unearthing forgotten valuables, homing in on secret miracles, and locating missing mother lodes.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): According to my lyrical analysis of the astrological omens, here are examples of the kinds of experiences you might encounter in the next 21 days: 1. interludes that reawaken memories of the first time you fell in love; 2. people who act like helpful, moon-drunk angels just in the nick of time; 3. healing music or provocative art that stirs a secret part of you—a sweet spot you had barely been aware of; 4. an urge arising in your curious heart to speak the words, "I invite lost and exiled beauty back into my life." PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Ex-baseball player Eric DuBose was pulled over by Florida cops who spotted him driving his car erratically. They required him to submit to a few tests, hoping to determine whether he had consumed too much alcohol. "Can you recite the alphabet?" they asked. "I'm from the great state of Alabama," DuBose replied, "and they have a different alphabet there." I suggest, Pisces, that you try similar gambits whenever you find yourself in odd interludes or tricky transitions during the coming days—which I suspect will happen more than usual. Answer the questions you want to answer rather than the ones you're asked, for example. Make jokes that change the subject. Use the powers of distraction and postponement. You'll need extra slack, so seize it! Homework: If you knew you were going to live to 100, what would you do differently in the next five years? Testify at Freewillastrology.com. Seeking Meaning SO IT BEGINS Sikh painter Sukhpreet Singh works on a portrait at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco.

Sikh Foundation International holds impressive 50th birthday party BY GARY SINGH

R

IPPLE EFFECTS WERE felt worldwide, as the Sikh Foundation International— headquartered in Palo Alto— celebrated its 50th anniversary last weekend in grand-scale fashion. A few hundred Sikhs from around the globe dropped serious cash for a gala that took over the Asian Art Museum on Friday, followed by a free two-day conference at Stanford's Li Ka Shing Center. Somehow, surrounded by Sikhs,

I managed to avoid talking about religion for the whole weekend and only one person tried to arrange a marriage for me. But first of all, let me introduce Narinder Singh Kapany, more commonly known around the globe as Dr. Kapany, the father of fiber optics. Kapany started the Sikh Foundation exactly 50 years ago in 1967, and he's been collecting Sikh art ever since. Over the decades, his collection has spawned several groundbreaking exhibits on several continents, including the current one at the Asian Art Museum. All of these exhibits have succeeded in foregrounding Sikh art in the contemporary museum-patroncollector nexus. On the academic front, Kapany has personally financed multiple endowments and chairs of

Sikh studies at higher institutions across the country. If not for him, none of this would be happening. Both the gala and the conference drew luminaries from a variety of backgrounds. At the conference, interfaith religious scholars, art collectors, medical technologists, and a beautifully esoteric oldschool European strain of Indophile museum curator types all showed up and held court. It was fantastic. For example, if I wanted to know which war-era descendant of which Punjabi maharajah sold a $60,000-dollar book of original Sikh-illustrated drawings of the high court to a strange collector in France, someone in the room probably had the answer. Art ruled the weekend. The festivities also celebrated the official release of a brand new volume, Sikh Art From the Kapany Collection, a gargantuan 320-page hardcover art book including numerous scholarly texts by internationally recognized art historians analyzing Kapany's collection.

Edited by Paul Michael Taylor, of the Smithsonian Institution's Asian Cultural History Program, and Sikh Foundation Executive Director Sonia Dhami, the book includes three main sections. The first section concentrates on the collectors and their vision, with biographical and profile information about the Kapanys and their history. The second section surveys the collection in terms of how it conveys Sikh history and ethos. The third and final section deals with stamps, coins and textiles from Kapany's collection, while also offering still more contemporary perspectives on how to preserve and exhibit the collection. Several of the authors included in Sikh Art gave presentations at the Stanford conference, which unfolded over two days. The Saturday afternoon session was titled, “Sikh Arts and Heritage— Expanding Horizons,” and it featured a star-studded lineup. I felt like a teenager at a rock show, in that I didn't want to leave until the last person was gone. One of India's most distinguished contemporary painters, Arpana Caur, presented a gorgeous PowerPoint slideshow of 40 years’ worth of her work, some of which featured brutal depictions of the horrors suffered during the 1947 Partition of India, albeit in abstract representations. Author Bhupinder Singh Bance, also known as Peter Bance, came from England to present on the strange life of the last Sikh maharajah, Duleep Singh, a character who ascended to the throne in Punjab at age 5 and remained there for eight years until the British conquered Punjab and forced him into exile by bringing him back to the United Kingdom and converting him to Christianity. Once in England, Duleep became an exotic party accessory in Queen Victoria's crowd before eventually reclaiming his Sikh faith and trying to return to Punjab. To make a long story short, he wound up dying in a Paris hotel room. Other speakers rounding out the Arts and Heritage afternoon included Dr. Jean-Marie Lafont of France, an author of many books over the last 40 years, mostly about Franco-Punjabi relations and Indo-French connections during the Sikh empire. Lafont gave a presentation about the 19th century Punjabi artist Imam Bakhsh and his illustrations for La Fontaine’s Fables. Among such scholarly giants of Punjab history and arts, I was blown away. Here’s to another 50 years!

Pints for Pups: Beer, No Bite

B

EER. ART. PUPPIES.

All of everyone’s favorite things come together Saturday at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds for the third annual Pints for Pups event, a fundraiser that aims “to help local pups find forever homes” throughout the Bay Area. Facebook group Southbay Beer Hounds, a network of 1,423 like-minded beer lovers who share their brewski experiences, and ceramic supply store Clay Planet are presenting the event, which plays the dual role of supporting local pet shelters and more than 40 local artists who will be selling one-of-a-kind mugs, chalices, growlers, paintings and other media. A percentage of proceeds from all drink, food and art purchases will benefit the Silicon Valley Pet Project, a nonprofit organization committed to saving local at-risk shelter pets, as well as the event’s new beneficiary, the Thulani Program, a nonprofit that rescues and adopts ill or older German shepherds in California. Last year, the event raised more than $7,000 in a day. “We’re hoping, of course, to surpass that [sum] this year,” says Deb Anderson, a passionate animal lover who co-founded Pints for Pups with husband Paul Anderson, the founder of Beer Hound networking, and Clay Planet owner Matt Hoogland. Their first attempt at the ambitious triad of craft drinks, local art and charity took place in March 2015, when 400 people showed up for the cause. Since then, the event outgrew its original venue at San Jose’s Strike Brewery, where last year’s event drew in 700 people and some complaints about a lack of space. Elbow room will not be an issue this year at the county fairgrounds. The larger venue will allow for a carnival-style benefit that will also feature food trucks, donation drawings, a kissing booth, and live performances by Bug Horn Rex and Sound Decisions. Beer will be served from eight local breweries, including Strike, Hermitage, Firestone Walker and Santa Clara Valley Brewing. Also joining this year’s event is Sarah’s Vineyard, Satori and Venus Spirits to serve wine and cocktails. Both the Pet Project and Thulani will be present, allowing attendees to interact with adoptable puppies. “It’s really a privilege to be able to help such worthy groups by assembling other great folks—wonderful, local, eccentric artists, brewers and winemakers,” Paul Anderson says. Festivities will commence Saturday, May 13, from 1pm-8pm, with last call at 7pm. Admission can be purchased on Eventbrite for $10, and drink tickets will be sold at the event for $5 each. —Camille Miller

The Effing Taqueria

W

HAT’S IN A NAME? That which we call a taco by any other name would taste just as delicious. Similar to judging a book by its cover, a restaurant should not be reviewed solely by the sign above the door. But when La Chingada Taqueria (roughly translated: “The Fucking Taqueria”) first popped on my radar, I couldn’t help but wonder about the back story.

After schmoozing with La Ching’s owner, Leo Aceves, for a few minutes, I finally popped the question: what’s up with the name? “Oh, well that’s the name of the town in Mexico,” he said, referring with a wry smile to the small town in his home state of Veracruz. Now that I had that mystery solved, I turned my attention to answering my favorite question: what’s for lunch? Chingada has a broad menu that serves up everything from breakfast, to the ubiquitous tacos and burritos, along with a nice selection of seafood to round things out. I went with their standard street tacos ($2.20 each) to sample the various meats, and some Crazy Fried ($4.75), which is their version of Carne Asada Fries but with any choice of meat. The selection of meats included the more exotic Lengua (tongue), Cabeza (head) and notorious Buche (pork stomach). While all were good, I particularly enjoyed the Lengua for its extremely beefy taste and tenderness. Their Buche might have been the least gamey I’ve had and was extremely tender. The Crazy Fried was also equally delicious. Just when I thought my visit was complete, I saw another customer order something that made my eyes pop and my mouth drool—and I knew another visit would be in order. The Piña Loca (Crazy Pineapple) is a heavenly dish conceived by a devilish mind. It consists of shrimp, octopus and pineapple cooked in a red hot Diabla sauce and blanketed in a sheet of melty Jack cheese—all served in a cored-out pineapple half-shell. The sweet heat made my eyes tear and sinuses clear, but I couldn’t stop engulfing it. The blend of spices, pineapple and seafood was a symphony to the senses and a dish worthy of being their signature item. All jokes aside, La Chingada is a great little joint in Berryessa, which is a neighborhood desperate for more good eats. With a versatile menu, affable ownership and terrific chow, they could be a cornerstone for years to come. —John Dyke LA CHINGADA TAQUERIA 3281 Sierra Rd, San Jose. 669.284.3935
