Good Catch On a recent afternoon, gravity and flip-flops failed me in a VERY public place.

Unfortunately, after my ungraceful fall I found that I could not get up—yes, like that one commercial. I want to thank the three semianonymous helpers who came to my rescue. I know that one of the two women was named Megan, but I’m drawing a blank on the gentleman's name who also escorted me to my vehicle.

That’s Rich Milpitas Mayor RICH TRAN—social worker, political noob and aspiring internet star— caused a minor stir, yet again, by showing up at last week’s NAACP gala. Apparently, the mayor showed up at the black-tie event in such casual attire that people thought he had crashed the party. “The worst-dressed people were wearing a dark suit,” quipped one sartorial critic. Tran settled in at a table reserved for folks from the Santa Clara Valley Water District, apparently because board director BARBARA KEEGAN’s seat was empty; she was home recovering from a recent car collision. When servers began collecting meal tickets, however, the mayor reportedly skedaddled without a word. “He thinks he gets everything for free because he’s the mayor,” a party guest groused.

Tran dismissed the remarks as ill-informed gossip. For one thing, he said, his outfit was on point: black patent leather shoes, a dress shirt, a V-neck sweater and gray slacks. “Slim fit,” he said of the pants. “Go ahead and put that in.” Far from crashing the chichi shindig, Tran said, he was dutifully making his rounds to multiple events that evening. Tran says his brief appearance was cleared ahead of time with the president of the San Jose-Silicon They Valley NAACP, the Rev. Did JETHROE MOORE. It What? seems the mayor’s antics—in just four SEND TIPS TO months—have put him FLY@ under the microscope.

In January, he ran afoul of open meeting laws by violating the Brown Act. More recently, he’s drawn the ire of City Manager TOM WILLIAMS after disparaging his job performance and suggesting that he’s too old to stick around at City Hall much longer.

Fly has learned that the city manager lodged an official complaint against the mayor. When asked for comment, Tran said: “Can’t really comment on anything about that at all.”

San Jose renters win historic vote; implementation uncertain

UNICE HERNANDEZ has spent the past two years rallying lowincome renters in a campaign to bolster tenant protections and stem the tide of displacement in San Jose. With her colleagues at the nonprofit Sacred Heart Community Service, the 32-year-old organizer urged residents to share their personal stories at protests and public hearings, putting a face on what advocates call an epidemic of evictions.

Those efforts culminated in a historic win last week when the City Council voted to outlaw no-cause evictions. San

Jose—one of the few major California cities to let landlords oust tenants without telling them why—will now require landlords to cite one of a dozen approved reasons before refusing to renew a lease. Those causes include nonpayment, property damage or crime. But until the so-called “just cause” ordinance takes effect, the measure designed to protect renters puts them at greater risk of retaliation.

“We are keeping an eye out and warning tenants, especially the ones who spoke out,” Hernandez says.

“We’re handing out fliers with a hotline number that people can call for help if they need it.”

On May 9, the council will vote on whether to roll out the ban on nocause evictions immediately or after three months. Applying it right away would require a supermajority, which is unlikely from a council that narrowly banned no-cause evictions in the first place. The city’s decision in 2016 to

lower the cap on yearly rent hikes from 8 percent to 5 percent prompted similar fallout, Hernandez says. With a few months before the new policy was enacted, landlords took advantage of the delay to raise rents to the legal limit.

Others simply evicted tenants so they could charge the next ones market rates.

“That’s one of the lessons we learned from last year,” Hernandez says. “We can approve a new policy, but people aren’t safe until it’s active.”

Also delayed until final council approval are new requirements under the Ellis Act, a 1985 state law that allows landlords to clear a rent-controlled building if they move in or tear it down.

San Jose will soon follow the lead of San Francisco by requiring landlords to cover some of the moving costs for tenants displaced by Ellis Act evictions.

The policy changes have split San Jose’s elected leaders along ideological lines, with supporters calling housing a basic human need and opponents framing the issue in terms of property rights and public safety. It also signaled how Mayor Sam Liccardo, who opposed the new

Councilman Johnny Khamis, a landlord who voted against the new policy, notes that it does nothing to fix an affordability crisis caused by an intractable shortage of housing. Council members Chappie Jones, Dev Davis and Lan Diep joined his opposing vote.

Freshmen council members Sergio Jimenez and Sylvia Arenas drafted the winning ordinance, which called for stricter eviction controls than those prescribed by the city’s housing staff. Vice Mayor Magdalena Carrasco, who was appointed by Liccardo and considered the swing vote going into the April 18 meeting, backed the newcomers’ proposal along with council members Don Rocha, Raul Peralez and Tam Nguyen. “The new composition of the council was really put to the test by this vote,” Nguyen told Metro. “It shows how when it comes down to a very important and difficult situation like this, people come back to their principles.”

As someone who once owned a home and now rents a shared space in the district he represents, Nguyen says he sees both sides of the discussion. But tenants made a more convincing case, he adds, while landlords presented little in the way of solutions.

“I understand that landlords want to get a fair return on investment,” says Nguyen. “I can live with that. But I thought they should have come up with a better story. For me, I thought the vote was a show of people standing firm on their core values and their constituents.”

Despite fears of retaliation while the policy is in limbo, activists cite the reforms as proof that renters have come into their own as a political force in Silicon Valley. San Jose’s just cause vote came on the heels of another win for tenants in nearby Mountain View, where a voter-approved rent control measure survived a legal challenge from the California Apartment Association.

“What we’re seeing, I think, is a growing awareness that rent control is the most realistic, effective tool that we have to deal with in this housing crisis,” says Daniel DeBolt, one of the chief organizers behind the rent control campaign in Mountain View.

“Business as usual isn’t going to cut it.”

The wave of renter rights campaigns sweeping the Bay Area has galvanized a

longstanding push for statewide reforms to bolster rent control by expanding the pool of eligible housing. A bill introduced by Assembly members Richard Bloom (D-Santa Monica), David Chiu (D-San Francisco) and Rob Bonta (D-Oakland) aims to overturn a state law called the Costa-Hawkins Rental Housing Act, which undermines local rent regulations by allowing landlords to reset vacant rent-controlled units to market rate. It also exempts all singlefamily homes, condos and apartments built after 1995 from rent caps, although San Jose set 1979 as the cutoff.

Former San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed, an attorney specializing in real estate law, says the debate over rent control misses the point entirely. Economists largely view rent control and other price controls as ineffective, or a way to push costs to other people. To fix the affordability crisis, Reed says, Californians must building more housing. But incentivizing new development would require sweeping reforms that have failed time and again for decades.

“The market is already totally distorted in San Jose because we haven’t built sufficient housing to meet the demand created by jobs for the past 40 years,” Reed says. “San Jose has made a huge effort to create jobs, but is much less successful at getting housing. I don’t think there should be rent control at all.”

Price controls are hardly the only distortion at play, according to UC Berkeley Professor Emeritus Richard Walker, an outspoken critic of market fundamentalism. Income inequality, speculation, tax havens and tax cuts all drive the affordability crisis, he notes. He cites Proposition 13 as a case in point. The 1978 law keeps property taxes far lower than the rest of the country and discourages local governments from investing in housing because it generates less in taxes.

Even proponents of rent control concede that it’s merely a stopgap.

But absent a statewide fix, local governments have no choice but to act, tenant advocates say. In a memo issued before the just cause vote last week, Councilman Rocha presented rent caps and eviction protections as one part of a whole suite of possible solutions.

“I agree that rent control isn’t a full solution,” DeBolt says, “but it does protect people from needless rent increases and evictions.”

BY JENNIFER WADSWORTH The morning after Donald Trump’s presidential election victory, scores of students at Downtown College Prep’s campus in San Jose got up from their desks in the middle of class and walked out in protest. Thousands of young people throughout the nation did the same, leaving their campuses to march against a leader who vowed to ramp up deportations.

For the students of Downtown College Prep, however, that protest continued beyond Nov. 9. They formed a Social Justice Club and surveyed fellow students to find out how they could effectively resist policies by a president who has promised to put immigrant communities in the crosshairs.

Students at the East Side San Jose high school will lead a workshop later this week to educate immi-

grant families about their rights.

The bilingual class on Thursday evening will review paths to legalizing undocumented residents, basic rights to remember when contacted by federal immigration agents and how noncitizens can pursue a college education.

“Because most of our students are immigrants or children of immigrants, they were terrified of Donald Trump being elected and his anti-immigrant politics being put into place,” said Cesar Juarez Ruiz, a social studies teacher at Downtown College Prep. “The students said, ‘We have to do something. Let’s educate the community.’”

An immigration lawyer will be on hand during the workshop, but the event is student-led and will run from 6 to 7:30pm Thursday

at Independence High School.

Students will also use the event to promote the upcoming May Day march, which is organized by a broad coalition of community groups and expected to draw its biggest turnout in years. The international May 1 holiday celebrates workers and immigrants. In 2006, the march drew about 100,000 to the South Bay. “If we had just walked out the first day after we received news and if we hadn’t done anything after that, we wouldn’t get people’s attention and we really wouldn’t be helping the community,” said Isai Gallegos, a 16-year-old Downtown College Prep student. “But by continuing our agenda of doing things, we’re trying to actually make something happen and express how we feel and make a difference.”

Silicon Valley prides itself on innovating products and culture, but the tech industry’s growth in the Bay Area perpetuates suburban sprawl and drawn-out commutes.

That’s according to a new study by SPUR, a local nonprofit that studies urban planning. The report, titled “Rethinking the Urban Campus,” found that barely 20 percent of the region’s tech companies lie within a half-mile of public transit. As a result, more than 86 percent of people in Santa Clara County—the most populous and job-rich part of the Bay Area—drive solo to work. “Recent growth is not reshaping the region,” the authors write. “It is reinforcing existing patterns … where most jobs are in auto-dependent places away from rail.” From the 1950s on, low-rise office parks replaced fruit orchards and pastures, turning Santa Clara Valley into the interminable sprawl of the present. Despite policy efforts to cluster jobs near transit hubs, recent development largely takes the same shape of a 20th century corporate campus or cloistered office park surrounded by expansive parking lots. Apple in Cupertino, Facebook in Menlo Park and Google in Mountain View all lie more than three miles from the closest train station.

Although in just the 10th year of a 30 year program (tax collection started mid-2006), VTA has achieved significant results toward meeting Measure A goals including: • Extending BART to the Santa Clara County cities of Milpitas, San Jose and Santa Clara extension to Berryessa currently trending ahead of schedule and under budget, with opening projected for late 2017.

• Extending and improving light rail service - new line from Mountain View to Alum Rock is being established to connect with Caltrain and the new Milpitas BART Station to integrate VTA’s BART to Silicon Valley Berryessa Extension.

Several integral projects, including Mountain View Double-Track and Santa Clara Pocket Tracks, have been completed.

• Increase Caltrain service and electrify the system from Palo Alto to Gilroy - VTA has partnered with Caltrain on implementation from Palo Alto to the Tamien Station. Environmental process has been completed and contracts awarded for design and construction and for purchase of electric trains.

RUNCH IS A rite of passage in Silicon Valley. It begins with the primordial days of adulthood, when Sunday Fundays made our 20s a blur and beat us down at our desks on Monday.

In time it began to mellow, and brunch was no longer bottomless but restricted to a mimosa or two.

Eventually, brunch evolves into an actual breakfast, where it’s more about getting the family together for a good bite to eat than standing on the curb of Bill’s. No matter what stage of brunch we’re at in life, the least we can ask is that the food, service and suds are on point.

The Breakfast Club 1432 W San Carlos St #80, San Jose 408.564.7150 The Breakfast Club may be the South Bay brunch scene’s new kid on the block, but they’re making people take notice with none-too-flashy but exceptionally damn good food—and an inspired drink menu aptly labeled “Bubbles and Marys.” The Chicken Fried Steak might be the GOAT and their Red Velvet Pancakes are not to be missed.

Although they do have a kids’ menu, the décor and ambiance is better suited for the Funday Sunday set.

Executive Chef Jim Stump’s newly renovated and expanded restaurant is perhaps the first place that pops to my mind when considering brunch locations. The posh eatery has a terrific menu that ranges from traditional Steak and Eggs to the nontraditional, like their Lemon Ricotta Pancakes, Roasted Bone Marrow and Pulled Pork Chilaquiles. The open communal seating arrangement fits well with Bottomless Mimosas, which is probably why 20- and 30-somethings flock to The Table.

Bill’s Café Multiple locations Saying nothing of their quest for total South Bay breakfast domination, Bill’s Café is still the gold standard when it comes to a classic diner-style brunch. Their seven locations are all extremely popular for good reason.

BASE CAMP Everest Cuisine’s lunch buffet offers a quality introduction to Nepalese fare.

F

USION MIGHT SEEM like a fairly modern culinary concept, but the mixing of different cuisines has been going on since time immemorial. Nowhere is this more evident than in the humble, little landlocked country of Nepal, whose neighbors have rubbed off to create an exotic cuisine that mixes Chinese (dumplings and stir-fry) and Indian (curries and spices). “Nepalese fare” only turns up a few local search results, but Everest Cuisine could have a hand in changing that.

Located in a commercial-residential area of Mountain View in the shadow of the search giant—or as my 6-year-old eloquently put it, “So this is where Google lives”—Everest quietly serves up unique dishes and a few standard Indian favorites. The best way to sample out a new cuisine is to try as much as possible, so we went with the lunchtime buffet ($10.99) over the à la carte dinner menu. Everest’s buffet has a small but quality selection that has something for everyone, including quite a bit of vegetarian-friendly choices.

I was a bit disappointed that they only had two Nepalese dishes to try, as the rest consisted mostly of Indian-style dishes. But they did have a nice selection of chutneys that featured mango and, my personal favorite, tamarind.

The Nepalese portion of the buffet consisted of a traditional yellow dal (lentils) and a vegetarian biryani. Both were quite good, as the creamy lentils melted in my mouth with a unique blend of spices that I can’t say I’ve had before. The biryani also was fluffy, and spiced very well.

On the Indian side of the menu, the highlights had to be Paneer Makhani (butter cheese), Andhra Goat Curry and the Tandoori Chicken. The Paneer Makhani sauce was rich, buttery and full of flavor. I could’ve just eaten a huge bowl of just this and been satisfied. The goat curry was equally flavorful and chock full of tender, flavorful goat that was cooked perfectly. It also had a nice kick to it, making me start to sweat. Luckily I had the forethought to order their delightful Mango Lassi ($2.99) to help quell the heat. The drink was thick and refreshing, and it had a terrific mango flavor without being overly sweet.

The Tandoori Chicken was cooked so that the meat fell right off the bone.

Although I would’ve enjoyed delving more into Nepalese fare with more options on the buffet, it was still a nice introduction. As far as Indian buffets go, Everest has a high-quality selection at an excellent price point, with the added advantage of maybe trying something new along the way.

Last summer, as the music blogosphere was taking a deep dive into Simpsonswave—penning think pieces on the YouTube-spawned micro-genre’s visual aesthetics, gauzy sonic textures and potential for conjuring bittersweet, spacey nostalgia—a group of Arizona metalheads were plotting a revolt.

Phoenix-based Okilly Dokilly have a decidedly less chill take on The Simpsons, even if they draw their primary inspiration from one the show’s most tranquil characters.

The quintet craft super-heavy, Ned Flanders-informed numbers which they call “Nedal.” Replete with biblical violence, odes to getting drunk on wine and a detailed rundown of “Donut Hell,” it’s as brutal as the Old Testament. (NV)

This Central California-born singer, songwriter and producer has been making waves on the country music scene with his fun-loving stomper “Dirt on My Boots”—a tribute to putting in a hard day’s work in the field and clocking in some overtime with a big night out. “Might have a little dirt on my boots,” Pardi croons on the debut single from his sophomore LP, California Sunrise, released last summer. “But I’m takin’ you uptown tonight.” He’s been on the big-time country circuit for a few years, opening for the likes of Alan Jackson and Dierks Bentley before striking out on headlining tours of his own. Featuring food, drink, visual art and, of course, plays, City Lights Theater’s first festival of new works will showcase four fulllength plays and a collection of shorts by local playwrights— including City Lights star Max Tachis as well as Leslie Martinson, associate artistic director of TheatreWorks Silicon Valley.

Spanning a variety of genres, from romantic comedy to family drama, each production will be followed by an audience discussion with the cast and writer. It’s just the latest signal of growth from the SoFA District black box theater, which recently installed a cutting-edge projection mapping system for its production of Frankenstein. (NV)

Comprising a burlesque performer from Hollywood and a master of illusion from London, the “Tea for Two Variety Revue” is an amalgam of titillation, circus sideshow, comedy and magic. The revue features the Los Angeles-based go-go Amy—producer of “The Pretty Things Peepshow”—and Tom Balmont, a comedian and magician from across the pond known for his own one-man show, “The Man with the Mechanical Heart.” Together, they specialize in sword swallowing, fire eating, a stunt known as the “blade box of doom,” and commanding a mindreading dog. The trio will perform various works by the German baroque master, all arranged for cello, upright bass and mandolin. The three released Bach Trios earlier this month on Nonesuch Records. (NV)

Internationally recognized for his charisma in relation to canines, dog behavioralist Cesar Millan is the star of the NatGeo Wild TV show Cesar 911 and the former host of Dog Whisperer—a program now broadcast all over the globe in syndication. His philosophy centers around the role humans have in projecting confidence and assuming a leadership position over their dogs. Abstract Memories INCOMPLETE RECALL Like a family’s pre-digital photo albums, the scenes captured in ‘Abstracts From Life’ are blurry and nostalgic.

New NUMU exhibit rounds up Bay Area figurative artists

I

S IT TOO soon to feel nostalgic for the 20th century? Abstracts From Life: Bay Area Figurative Past and Present at New Museum Los Gatos (NUMU) doesn’t think so. The exhibit seamlessly joins the past and the present together. But it’s easy to mistake the old for the new, and vice versa.

After a couple of turns through the galleries, “Little Edie” Beale’s famous Grey Gardens quotation makes perfect sense, “It’s very

difficult to keep the line between the past and the present.”

She’s referring to nostalgia—the mysterious feeling that floods your mind with memories, the poignant ones thought lost or temporarily missing, that suddenly return to overlap and interfere with your day-to-day emotions. The era of Bay Area figurative art’s heyday, 1950-1965, informs the tone of NUMU’s exhibit.

The actual date an artist created the painting, though, is less important than the similarly shimmering palettes and human-centered narratives.

The stories on these canvases impact you the way a family’s pre-digital photo albums do. The memories are blurred out, like the faces themselves, but you can still

recognize your mother in a miniskirt, or your brother’s boyhood profile.

It’s the lingering influence of abstract expressionism that renders the figures anonymous, allusive or more universal with the messy medium of paint. These snapshots in time capture a particular moment, even if the details are fuzzy and hazed over in our preoccupied brains.

That moment is a caesura, when the world pauses and takes a breath.

That’s why these associations can occur, because the paintings live there, in an uncomplicated, or, at least, less complicated past.

Technology is gloriously and radiantly absent. Alienation might still exist but it’s happening outside, without a gadget pressed against the head. Abstracts From Life announces the arrival of summer, long days filled with sunny pleasures.

Mitchell Johnson’s The Man with Umbrellas features a beach scene, with

a Speedo-clad man returning to his towel after a swim. His back is to the viewer, as are three brightly colored umbrellas tilted to angle against the sun. We don’t know who he’s with or the expression on his face. All we know is what we see and what we remember of being at the beach ourselves. The sunshine on our back, the water drying on the skin, the sand beneath our feet.

Jennifer Pochinski’s The Wonderful Race takes a bird’s-eye view of swimmers in a race. They’re all wearing orange caps and spreading their arms out in the dark blue and green water. They are grouped together like a human school of fish or frogs, limbs like fins scrambling inside the motion of the waves.

Pochinski’s vision is ecstatic. She represents the body moving in unison with others. The race is wonderful because they all have the same taste of the sea in their mouths, the ocean current pulling them all forward with the same goal in mind: buoyancy.

Both Johnson’s and Pochinski’s works are dated from 2016. The shades of green in Promenade Under the Trees #90 also give it the appearance of a recent accomplishment. The colors are shiny, almost wet. But James Weeks painted it in 1975. Born in Oakland in 1922, he was a “first-generation” Bay Area figurative artist. The father, mother and son in Promenade also have their backs to us, like the figures

by Johnson and Pochinski. Are they contentedly holding hands or is this the moment before they had an argument?

Not seeing their faces excites the imagination. The lack of individual features unites the most arresting work in Abstracts From Life. In a nod to Mad Men, that TV show also steeped in nostalgia, each painting is like a slide from a carousel that lights up its designated place on the wall. The life you project upon them is as peculiar and strange as the one normally held dormant in your mind. When you visit NUMU, prepare for the return of memories, those once forgotten as well as those much longed for.

And there’s certainly no reason to pay the “asshole tax.” If you don’t like your boss, you quit, knowing that 10 other companies will be lining up to hire you. So the pressure on companies to get these relationships right is enormous.

Larry Page can’t have a real relationship with more than a handful of people any more than you can. But the relationships you have with the handful of people who report directly to you will have an enormous impact on the results your team achieves. The ripple effect will go a long way toward creating—or destroying—a positive culture. Relationships may not scale, but culture does.

What is the proper nature of this relationship? Managerial capitalism is a relatively new phenomenon, so this human bond was not described by ancient philosophers. Even though almost everybody today has a boss at some point, the nature of this connection has gotten short shrift in philosophy, literature, movies, and all the other ways we explore the relationships that govern our lives. Hollywood does the Armenian genocide in ‘The Promise’

T

HE TV REPORTERS attending last Friday’s opening of The Promise were claiming that this was the first movie made about the Armenian genocide; the statement was later corrected as the first Hollywood movie about it. It’s neither the first good movie nor the first bad movie about it, as one notes below.

Watching The Promise—it played at Cinequest—a person who knew nothing about the Armenian holocaust could learn about the murder of anywhere from 1-2 million

people under the cover of World War I. These civilians were wiped out by the Turkish soldiers of the Ottoman Empire, in ways which anticipated the grander-scale liquidations to come in Nazi Germany and Stalin’s USSR. For mass appeal, director and cowriter Peter George (Hotel Rwanda) frames this real-life tragedy as a love triangle between a hard-drinking reporter Yankee reporter Chris Myers (Christian Bale, as remote as Mount Ararat itself), his lover and illustrator Ana (Charlotte Le Bon)—Parisienne but “still true-blue Armenian”—and, lastly, Mikhael Boghosian (Oscar Isaacs). He’s a Turkish-born Armenian from a family of apothecaries who comes to Constantinople to be a medical student: the proceeds paid for by the dowry of his pale fiancé (Angela Sarafyan).

Chris leaves to report on the

initial massacres, and gets away a hairsbreadth in front of mounted Turkish troops—a potential for action that didn’t really pay off visually. In the meantime, a church service seems to hallow the forbidden love of Ana and the affianced Mikhael; it also gives George a chance to cross cut to a massacre, a la the christening/gang purge in The Godfather. Trying to get an avuncular friend out of the military prison, Mikhael himself is jailed and sent off to work as a slave laborer on a railway of death in the Taurus Mountains.

The tale sprawls like the Ottoman Empire itself. The locations—rugged parts of Spain and Portugal— are attractively shot by Javier Aguirresarobe (Vicky Cristina Barcelona), the film’s highlight being a ride on a hell-train, fiery red in the darkness and the rain, packed with Armenian prisoners; Mikhael, escaping his captors, clings to the back. Also reasonably thrilling is the climax, a guerrilla war at the mountain called Musa Dagh.

The script here is more than problematic, uneasy with levity (“Absinthe makes the heart grow fonder,” says Myers, telling a joke already centuries old in 1915). It’s ready for mawkishness. Says a prisoner: “I was a clown in the circus, and I made children laugh.” Jerry Lewis’s The Day the Clown Cried is avenged! Sinister Germans sing “Deutschland Uber Alles” to remind us that the sultan was in bed with the kaiser.

As an example of UNICEF moviemaking, The Promise is scarcely middling. During the rescue of a group of orphans, there’s not a memorable face among the kids. George doesn’t want to be overtly sentimental even while dealing with this too-lean to be David Lean material.

Turkey’s denial of the massacre has hindered the telling of this story.

Franz Werfel’s best-selling novel about Musa Dagh was in and out of development for decades, finally adapted into an obscure movie in the 1980s. Compare The Promise with Atom Egoyan’s cagey and learned Ararat (2002), a meta-film speculating about the morality—let alone the usefulness—of turning a holocaust into an entertainment.

Like The Promise, Ararat was booked at Armenian neighborhoods of our state—it was probably the first and the last Egoyan movie to play Fresno.

At the time, a colleague of Armenian descent told me that Ararat summed up for her the nested, contradictory qualities of an Armenian folktale in stories that often begin, “Once upon a time, there was and was not. …”

We get our share of castigation as Americans in The Promise—“How wonderful it must be to go back to your American home and report,” Chris is told. It’s fit for Americans to enjoy our own luck. Thanks to the viciousness of the sultan, the U.S. were the heirs to a remarkable nation of businessmen, artists, writers and directors…and Kim Kardashian, too, but that’s the way it goes. On the other hand, considering our refusal to aid Syrian refugees, it may be early to bask in self-congratulation.

Will Calhoun helps celebrate jazz greats, revamped Hammer

R

HYTHM IS A deceptively complex pursuit. It’s easy enough to clap along to the band, but when it comes to holding down a solid groove, even musicians proficient on stringed instruments, keyboards or horns can find that they are all thumbs.

And so, while guitarists and singers claim the spotlight—in

music videos and on stage—with rip-roaring solos and powerhouse vocal performances, fans would do well to consider the drummer.

Sitting aloof, hidden behind the kit, he is in many ways the true leader of the band.

Case in point: Will Calhoun, former drummer for Living Colour.

Just as John Bonham formed the bedrock upon which Jimmy Page erected his massive riffs in Led Zeppelin, Calhoun created an unshakable foundation with his ostensibly simple four-on-thefloor beats on tracks like “Cult of Personality,” the group’s biggest hit.

Still, it may surprise fans of Living Colour to learn that while Calhoun was walloping the skins in that funk metal powerhouse, he was also studying the work of one of jazz’s greatest percussionists, Elvin Jones.

Nearly 30 years on from the release of “Cult of Personality,” Calhoun is now leading his own band—in title and in rhythm—and paying tribute to the drummer who provided so much inspiration for him. On Celebrating Elvin Jones, released last summer, Calhoun collects covers of works by Jones, as well as compositions by Wilbur Little and John Coltrane (Jones was a member of the famed John Coltrane Quartet), and weaves them together with some of his own tunes.

Calhoun describes Jones as combination of a “boxer and a ballerina,” capable of whirlwind force

and delicate precision, noting that seeing Jones opened up his eyes to what a drummer could be. Calhoun will perform songs from Celebrating Elvin Jones at the Hammer Theatre Center this Sunday at 5pm as part of San Jose Jazz’s commemoration of International Jazz Day. The event will serve not only to showcase the talent of Calhoun and his predecessors, but it also marks the unveiling of the latest technological upgrade to the Hammer Theatre.

For a little more than a year, the Hammer Theatre Center has been undergoing a slow and steady modernization. Since San Jose State University’s College of Humanities and the Arts took over the former home of the San Jose Rep in the fall of 2015, the building has been brought up to code, the lighting system has been updated, and most recently, the second of two brand new sound systems—the Constellation Acoustic System.

Designed to enhance the experience of both performers and audiences alike, the Constellation system will function like a “virtual concert shell” for orchestras, operatic performances and concerts, according to Anthony Sutton, technical production manager for the Hammer Theatre.

Via a series of microphones hung meticulously above the stage, the system collects the sound of performers, funnels it through an algorithm and returns the sound through an array of finely tuned speakers.

Also performing on Sunday: local jazz group Howard Wiley and Extra Nappy, the SJSU Jazz Orchestra and Tiffany Austin, as well as young players in the SJZ High School All Stars and SJZ Progressions Ensemble.

In addition to live performances, the Hammer Theatre will also screen the 2009 documentary 1959: The Year That Changed Jazz, which examines four seminal jazz records released in 1959—Miles Davis' Kind of Blue, Dave Brubeck's Time Out, Charles Mingus' Ah Um, and Ornette Coleman's The Shape of Jazz to Come.

FUSION FEW Minneapolis jazz trio The Bad Plus play Art Boutiki this weekend.

Bad Bad Plus Good SOMEWHERE AROUND the one-minute mark of The Bad Plus’ cover of The Yeah Yeah Yeah’s “Maps,” it seems abundantly clear that the Minneapolis-based jazz trio has little intention of taking this thing anywhere near the distinct melody of Karen O & Co.’s breakout single.

Glancing at the playback ticker, it’s noteworthy that the unique take on the track clocks in at pretty much the same length as the original, but that appears to be where all similarities end. Then something interesting happens.

Recalling the audacity of the indie pop gem—released in 2003, back when System of a Down and Audioslave were still top alternative rock radio contenders—The Bad Plus’ rendition suddenly seems to be less high-brow winking and more of a straight-up tribute to a song that broke the mold in so many ways.

In the tune’s iconic video, we see it all: Nick Zinner’s layering of minimalist guitar loops; Brian Case’s drumming, which melds splashy post-bop percussion with thundering, bare-bones thwacking; and, of course, Karen O’s single Michael Jackson glove and single, bitter tear.

In a way, “Maps” is jazz already. And so, by the time The Bad Plus wrap things up—in a cacophony of clattering cymbals and snares, and with a few desperate stabs of piano, gesturing wildly at the song’s melody—it all makes sense. This “Maps” holds up in its own way, as a kind of exploded approximation, which allows the intent listener to discern the shape of the original in the hazy smoke and glistening shrapnel.

Fans of The Bad Plus will know that “Maps,” which appears on the group’s latest album, is followed by a string of covers. It’s Hard, released last summer, also takes on Peter Gabriel, Tears For Fears and Johnny Cash, among other pop artists. Given that It’s Hard is the group’s latest effort, and that they’ve been known to cover bands like Nirvana, one can assume they might break out “Maps” when they come to The Art Boutiki on Sunday. Then again, as a jazz trio with 12 full-length releases to their name, it’s anybody’s guess what they’ll actually play.

The upcoming show may also be the last chance for local fans to catch the trio’s original lineup. Earlier this month, The Bad Plus announced that pianist Ethan Iverson will be leaving the group after 17 years. —Nick Veronin

I’m a woman in my 30s. I love parties and talking to people, and thank God, because I attend networking events for work. My boyfriend, on the other hand, is an introvert, hates talking to strangers, and loathes “shindigs.” How do we balance my longing to go to parties with his desire to stay home?—Party Girl Taking an introvert to a party can be a challenge. On the other hand, if it’s a Fourth of July party, you know where to find him: hiding in the bathtub with the dogs.

I actually have personal experience in this area. Like you, I’m an extrovert— which is to say, a party host’s worry isn’t that I won’t have anyone to talk to; it’s that I’ll tackle three people and waterboard them with sangria till they tell me their life story. Also like you, I have a boyfriend who’s an introvert. For him, attending a party is like being shoved into an open grave teeming with live cockroaches—though, compassionately, it also includes an open bar.

This isn’t to say introverts are dysfunctional. They’re not. They’re differently functional. Brain imaging research by cognitive scientist Debra L. Johnson and her colleagues found that in introverts, sensory input from experience led to more blood flow in the brain (amounting to more stimulation). The path it took was

longer and twistier than in extroverts and had a different destination: frontal areas we use for inward thinking like planning, remembering, and problemsolving. So, introverts live it up, too; they just do it on the inside.

Extroverts’ brain scans revealed a more direct path for stimuli—with blood flowing straight to rear areas of the brain used for sensory processing, like listening and touching. They also have less overall blood flow— translating (in combination with a different neurochemical response) to a need for more social hoo-ha to feel “fed.”

Sometimes, you’ll really want your boyfriend there with you at a party—for support, because you enjoy his company, or maybe just to show him off (kind of like a Louis Vuitton handbag with a penis). But understanding that “shindigs” give his brain a beating, consider whether you could sometimes take a friend. When he accompanies you, maybe set a time limit and be understanding if he and the dog retreat to the den.

I grabbed my boyfriend’s phone to look something up, and I found a Google search for local massage places that offer “happy endings.” He says that he and his friends were just goofing off. Am I an idiot to believe him?—Disturbed His “goofing off ” is reminiscent of the “but I was just curious!” web searches that juries hear about—stuff like “Does arsenic have a flavor?” “How much antifreeze does it take to kill a 226.5pound man?” and “Who’s got the lowest prices on shovels and tarps?”

Sure, it’s POSSIBLE that your boyfriend is telling the truth—that he and his buddies were searching out massage parlors RIGHT NEARBY! just for a giggle. To determine how likely it actually is, consider that people don’t behave randomly. We’re each driven by a varying combo of personality traits—habitual patterns of thinking, emotion, and behavior that are relatively consistent over time and across situations. For example, an introvert will not suddenly become a party animal (unless we’re talking the taxidermied kind that’s stuck into the “fall leaves” centerpiece).

Research by evolutionary psychologists David Buss and Todd Shackelford found three personality traits that are strong “predictors of susceptibility to infidelity.” One is narcissism—being self-absorbed, admiration-seeking, empathy-deficient, and prone to scheming userhoood.

Being low on “conscientiousness” is another—reflected in being disorganized, unreliable, and lazy, and lacking self-control. Last, there’s “psychoticism,” which, despite its Bates Motel-like moniker, reflects a con artistlike exploitativeness, impulsivity, and lack of inhibition—not necessarily exhibiting those things while going all stabby on some lady enjoying a shower.

Consider whether your boyfriend's “just Googling for kicks!” claim is odd and uncharacteristic or whether it’s part of a pattern reflecting one or more of the lovely cocktail of traits above.

In addition to The Gong Show, Barris can also be blamed for The Newlywed Game and The Dating Game,

going back to the ’60s, helping to invent what’s now called reality TV decades before the term surfaced.

Barris used game-show entertainment to embarrass his entire industry, illuminating the crass idiocy of American pop culture in the process. In that sense, he was the greatest genius in television history.

In the late ’80s, Barris sold his empire to Sony, making enough to live happily ever after, so he wrote a biography claiming he was secretly a CIA hitman. The story was made into a film with the same name, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind.

My connection to Barris dates to January 2003, when he came to San

Francisco on a book tour, appearing at the Park Branch Library on Page Street. A jampacked capacity crowd filled the room, including one dude who’d won The Gong Show a quartercentury earlier and even brought the trophy with him for Barris to sign.

At the time, I was regularly hanging out with the remains of the San Francisco Cacophony Society, an intentionally disorganized network of individuals united in the pursuit of experiences beyond the pale of mainstream society through subversion, pranks or any meaningless crap involving silly costumes. Collectively, about 10 of us decided to prank the Chuck Barris event by dressing up with paper bags over our heads and wearing bad ’70s suits, ala the Unknown Comic, a regular from The Gong Show.

But there was more. That morning, we spent $50 to rent a

gong from Lemmon Percussion, which was then located at Willow and Bird in San Jose. A designated driver and I loaded the gong into his car and drove to San Francisco, where we secretly met the other Cacophonists upstairs at Hobson’s Choice, a rum bar on Haight Street, around the corner from the Park Branch Library. After getting solidly drunk, we situated ourselves out in front of the library, put the paper bags over our heads, and then quietly carried the gong into the event, setting it up behind the audience, just as Barris began to talk. Upon our entry, everyone in the crowd turned around to look at at us, wondering what on earth we were up to. Even Barris, from the podium, asked us what was going on.

But we just stood there, quiet and motionless next to the gong.

The plan from the beginning was to stand behind the crowd and not hit the gong. In this way, as the event unfolded, the entire audience would sit there, expecting us to hit the gong and ruin Chuck’s talk, waiting in anticipation of when it might happen, and then we wouldn’t do it. The prank was on the audience, not Chuck Barris per se. And it worked like a charm.

Throughout the event, people in the crowd kept nervously turning their heads around to see when we were going to hit the gong.

And we never did. The prank came across as classy and simple, a subtle masterpiece if I should say so myself. Afterward, Barris even stood next to us for a photo, while we still had the bags on our heads.

In pure Cacophony fashion, no one remembers who took the photo or what happened to it.

The next morning, back in San Jose and completely hungover, we returned the gong to Lemmon Percussion. I didn’t have the ambition to explain how we’d used it.

I’m recounting this idiotic adventure not only to celebrate the life of Chuck Barris, but to encourage every reader to attend the monthly Go! Go! Gong Show! at Cafe Stritch, hosted by San Jose living legend Mighty Mike McGee.
