Then a nurse wheeled me to the X-ray room. "OK. You're here for the X-ray on your right foot?" I replied, "No, my left … the one with the swollen, shoeless foot attached." Oakland and Berkeley already passed measures to blacklist aspiring border wall contractors, while cities in other parts of the nation weigh similar measures. That’s to say nothing of the public backlash that would no doubt ensue, despite scores of border wall bidders being minority owned. Quanergy CEO LOUAY ELDADA, who was born in Lebanon, has yet to return Fly’s request for comment. But in an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle, he defended his proposal as applying “Silicon Valley innovation to achieve the positive security goals without the negative repercussions.”

Eldada told the Chron that he wants to use Quanergy’s signature laser sensor technology, known as lidar, or “light detection and ranging,” to monitor the southern border. The “smart fencing” would detect and analyze movement and transmit live visualizations to border agents. Eldada’s is one of many high-tech plans put forward by companies to bolster or replace a physical barrier. Mountain View’s Future Fibre Technologies, which specializes in fiber-optic security sensors, is also vying to work on Trump’s pet project. U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials, however, advised that technology alone would be insufficient.

Water district, San Jose mayor pledge to cooperate on flood response

N ITS FIRST public meeting dedicated to the $100 million flood that ravaged parts of San Jose, the Santa Clara Valley Water District struck a combative tone.

Rather than acknowledge that its engineers provided inaccurate data about how much water Coyote Creek could handle before flooding, the district on March 29 accused city officials of misinterpreting or discounting that information. John Varela, board chair for the district— which hired Sam Singer’s crisis management agency for $25,000 shortly after the flood—said the city had plenty of warning but failed to order evacuations until long

after Anderson Dam overflowed, bombarding the creek and flooding homes and businesses on Feb. 21 and 22.

On this, both sides seem to agree.

San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo spoke at last week’s hearing and accepted blame for failing to provide timely warnings to residents—14,000 of whom were ordered to evacuate their homes after water was already at their door.

Hundreds more received no warning at all. However, the official response from the district, the South Bay’s lead floodcontrol agency, has taken a hard line.

“The district and the National Weather Service provided useful and valid information, data and forecasts leading up to the flood,” according to an 80-page presentation at the hearing.

“Numerous indicators showed the potential for flooding on Coyote Creek.”

While the water district has an obligation to monitor conditions for flood risk, the city’s role is to warn the

public about imminent threats. In a letter sent to the press, district board Chair Varela asked: “Why did the city not act on predictions, maps, data, forecasts and other information … that flooding was imminent?”

Liccardo, who had posed his own questions in a sharply worded letter to the district after a city hearing, said on Wednesday that he had already accepted responsibility for the city’s botched response and wants to focus on how to prevent similar devastation in the future.

“I took responsibility early on in this effort, because I hoped that would create the space needed for folks to come to the table and problem solve without pointing fingers and casting blame,” he said. “It appears my efforts fell short.”

The city relies on the water district’s expertise, the mayor added. If the data is unreliable, the city might need to hire its own hydrologists. “That shouldn’t happen,” Liccardo added.

Unless both agencies work together to fix their respective shortcomings, the mayor continued, then “we are absolutely doomed to repeat this debacle.” He implored the district to join the city’s recovery efforts.

“I hope you reach one conclusion at this meeting: start cutting checks,” said Heyne, a resident of the Naglee Park neighborhood. “Refund all the money you collected under the guise of flood control and creek maintenance. I count three line items dedicated to the water district on my property tax bill. Any other decision will confirm the common knowledge in this county—that you are a corrupt, incompetent, cowardly agency with no regard for the lives your mismanagement has affected.”

Some city officials were irked by the timing, which interrupted the city’s weekly Rules and Open Government Committee session and forced the mayor to arrive nearly an hour after the district started its meeting.

Jeffrey Hare said he tried calling the water district’s emergency operations center before the flood hit, but he got a pre-recorded message. He also slammed Assistant City Manager David Sykes, San Jose’s point man as the flooding began, for failing to issue evacuation orders in time. “Now, Mr. Sykes,” he said, “I could interpret your charts apparently more accurately than your staff did.”

The city and district should focus on four things, Hare concluded.

The two agencies should update flood-detection technology, improve communication, ensure that sandbags are delivered and “fix the damn dam.”

Robert Aguirre, an advocate for the homeless, called out water district and city officials for failing to address how their emergency response will account for all the people who live on the riverbanks. When the flood struck, many homeless people were left stranded.

“There was no mention of the houseless individuals living along the creek, the first people that were affected,” he said.

The district’s presentation—available online—said the next steps are to come up with a joint emergency plan and prepare for the next storm season. Local leaders will also lobby for state and federal funding to bolster permanent flood protections, such as floodwalls and levees. The district will hold more public hearings in the three communities most affected by the flood. The first takes place 6pm April 6 at the Santa Clara County Service Building (1555 Berger Drive. in San Jose). The other hearings are set for April 12 at the Franklin McKinley School District office (645 Wool Creek Road) and April 17 at Roosevelt Community Center (901 E. Santa Clara St).

Tony Estremera, a water district board member for the East Side of San Jose, said he wants to see people back in their homes, too. “We share the same constituents,” he said. “These folks are not aliens to us. … Let’s resolve whatever these conflicts are and move on.”

Lawsuits from residents who were displaced, sickened and lost property seem to be a key factor in the disharmony between the city and the district. But for the first time, the district’s defensive posture seemed to slack when board director Linda LeZotte offered a rare criticism of her own agency. The district has taken “no ownership” of the problem, she said.

“I think we need to take some responsibility for the information we provided,” LeZotte said. “If we don’t take ownership of that, we’re not going to fix this.” Later, she added: “I hope we’re learning that we need to change, whether we’re saying it in public or not.”

Norma Camacho, the district’s interim chief executive, conceded that the district needs to provide data that is useful and in context. The district will explore the idea of installing gauges that are visible to the public and easy for lay people to read, she said.

Board member Barbara Keegan agreed, but she also noted that the district and city’s failure to communicate should receive scrutiny.

“In some ways, I think the solution is more low-tech,” Keegan said. “It’s the improved communications, it’s having triggers for certain activities to take place and having boots on the ground, whether it’s our boots or your boots.”

One issue that the city and district have yet to figure out is who is responsible for keeping clearing vegetation, which affects the flooding threshold. The water agency maintains that it’s responsible for dredging all engineered channels. But much of Coyote Creek, including the parts that flooded, are natural channels with sensitive habitats. Vegetative growth and sediment buildup affect water flow.

The few dozen residents who showed up to the early-afternoon meeting—held when many people were at work—had sharp words for both the city and the district. Several people expressed anger about the district holding the meeting at a time when flood victims couldn’t attend.

UFI MYSTICS DON’T normally make good spooks.

As such, Noor Inayat Khan was perhaps the worst possible candidate to spy for Britain in World War II. Her dad was a Sufi musician from India, a personal friend of Mahatma Gandhi and also the one who first introduced Sufism to the West. Her mom was an American from New Mexico. Noor was born in Moscow but grew up in Paris, where she wrote Buddhist fables for children in both English and French.

A descendant of Indian royalty and deeply spiritual person, she refused to kill anyone or even tell a lie. None of which generally bodes well for a career in espionage.

Noor was only 13 when her father died, with the family continuing to live near Paris until the Nazis invaded and occupied the country. In 1940, the family fled to England. As a bona fide pacifist and Sufi, Noor could not initially support such an idea as joining the war, but a deep concern for the evils of fascism led her to enlist on behalf of the United Kingdom.

Since she was fluent in French, Noor was eventually recruited by the Allied Special Operations Executive (S.O.E.)

to become the first female radio operator dispatched to Nazi-occupied Paris. Her multilingual abilities and her talent for relaying codes proved a winning combination—at first.

Ultimately, Noor’s story did not end happily. After spying behind enemy lines with major success for several months, she was betrayed by a friend, tortured and shot in Dachau on Sept. 13, 1944. As a result, she was posthumously awarded the George Cross in England and the Croix de Guerre in France, the highest civilian honors in each country.

Others have already written books and made documentaries about Noor, but Vinita Belani of Los Altos felt the story was perfect for EnActe Arts, the international theater company she founded to bring South Asian stories to universal audiences. SoundWaves: The Passion of Noor Inayat Khan, runs this weekend at De Anza College and is filled with colorful narratives, music, dance and other visuals, bringing Noor’s life to the forefront yet again.

“This is a story that I feel can inspire people,” Belani says.

“Humanity is humanity. And when you see something wrong, you need to address it. And take it upon yourselves to redress it. And so somewhere there is the idea that a woman like this is a universal hero.

But she comes from the South Asian canon and we can tell her story.”

Playwright Joe Martin, a professor of theater at Johns Hopkins University and author of several books on Sufism and various wisdom traditions, wrote the script.

Several years ago, Martin was already researching the history of Sufism’s expansion into the West, so he naturally became acquainted with Noor’s father, Hazrat Inayat Khan. But he was not familiar with the explicit details of Noor’s short espionage life. Her courage and willingness to give up everything, her Sufi ideal of self-sacrifice, compelled him to write a play, the original version of which premiered in 2013.

“From a historical perspective, it seemed important to me that a woman of Indian extraction—and Sufism, which derives from Islam— that such a person would make a

The EnActe production of SoundWaves is a multimedia tapestry including projected images of Noor’s family, the Gestapo and the concentration camps. Randy Armstrong composed the music and Maria Basile, of sjDANCEco,

choreographed the dance. The first part of the play explores the environment in which Noor grew up, as well as her philosophy, her family life and pacifist upbringing, setting her up as a person living in a warm, secure family, all of whom were musicians. She played the harp, and her siblings played piano. Each attended the music conservatory, in addition to pursuing regular degrees.

The second half of the play explores the harsh reality of what happened to Noor when she took the grave decision to join the war.

BY BENJAMIN SIEPAK Santa Clara County’s much-maligned election system is about to go under the microscope.

Last week, the state’s Joint Committee on Legislative Audit unanimously approved Assemblyman Evan Low’s request to dig into the county Registrar of Voters (ROV). Low cited administrative mistakes and errors in the ROV that date back to June 2010.

“We need to ensure all voters have access to an open and accessible electoral process that is free from barriers,” Low said in a March 17 letter.

In his request, the South Bay assemblyman stated that the goal of the audit—expected to last five months—would be to assess mistakes in previous ballots to determine if the errors were isolated or part of a broader systemic failure. Low, whose district includes Campbell and other parts of West Valley, posed six questions in

his request. He wants to know how effective communication has been when informing voters of mistakes, as well as what measures are being taken to prevent similar errors from occurring.

“An independent comprehensive audit of Santa Clara County will safeguard voters’ constitutional right to vote and ensure these voters are not disenfranchised due to administrative errors or practices that are not in compliance with current law,” Low said.

Low also sent a letter on March 17 to County Supervisor Dave Cortese, in which the assemblyman noted six election mishaps by the ROV. The county ROV is implementing a new voting process in accordance with the California Voters Choice Act (SB 450), which would allow people to vote at any polling place as well as give the county the option to move to all-mail balloting. Both options would be a fundamental shift in the

way local elections are conducted.

“Given that Santa Clara County is one of the counties that will be permitted to implement this new way of conducting elections in 2018, it is imperative that voters have confidence in elections conducted by the Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters,” Low wrote in his letter to the audit committee.

ROV spokeswoman Anita Torres said that 70 percent of county voters already mail in their ballots, but the goal is to implement a new system by 2020—not next year.

In November 2014, Registrar of Voters Shannon Bushey told San Jose Inside that the county would take a closer look at new technology to speed up vote tallying by 2017.

In other words, answers about the ROV’s operations should arrive this fall, but the county’s sluggish electoral process will continue for at least three more years.

Despite a booming economy and highwage jobs, the Bay Area has taken a toll on all but its most affluent denizens. Nearly half of millennials (anyone between the ages of 18 and 39) may leave the nine-county region. That’s according to a new poll by the business-backed Bay Area Council, which found that grinding traffic and soaring housing costs have rendered the region prohibitively expensive to the young and working class. The survey found that 46 percent of millennials and 40 percent of the region’s residents overall consider fleeing—a considerable increase from last year. Of the thousand residents polled, 55 percent said that they worry about the overall cost of living, 41 percent cited traffic as their biggest concern and 39 percent cited housing. It’s clear that younger adults feel the most pain, however. Nearly two-thirds of millennial respondents ranked cost of living as one of the main problems facing the Bay Area.

Trump OKs FEMA Aid for San Jose President Trump approved federal disaster aid to Santa Clara County and other parts of California affected by the February floods, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced Sunday.

Trump had already signed off on Gov. Jerry Brown’s request for funding to help counties affected by the January storms. This week’s decision will free up additional funding to 42 California counties where severe rainfall, floods and mudslides devastated homes, businesses and roadways last month.

San Jose was caught off guard by flooding Feb. 21 to 22, as water spilled over Anderson Dam and washed out neighborhoods along Coyote Creek. Local officials estimate that the flood caused at least $100 million in damage. —Jennifer Wadsworth

by Irish playwright and actor Donal O’Kelly. The Stage produces the world premier of The Memory Stick, which examines the 1916 Easter Rising— which saw Irish republicans fighting for independence from the British— and contrasts the rebellion with similar insurgent efforts made by American Indians. The story is told through the eyes of two main characters: Bridget, a young Chicagoan of Irish heritage, and a fellow American of Sioux ancestry who meet on an Army base in Kandahar, Afghanistan. Commercial Art DIGITAL DAVE For the second time, David Hockney picks up an iPad, with mixed results.

The new David Hockney exhibit: experiment or Apple ad?

IKE THE “SHOT on iPhone" ad campaign that resurfaces every few months on roadside billboards, the iPad drawings of David Hockney’s The Yosemite Suite make a similar argument. They advertise the singularity of the Apple product in lieu of the works themselves.

Instead of leaving the means of production vague, i.e., a mobile

device, the iPad is credited as an equal partner in Hockney’s creative process.

This isn’t necessarily suspect but it does raise the question: is The Yosemite Suite a not-very-well-disguised commercial for an Apple product?

This is the British-born, L.A.-based artist’s second collection of iPad prints to make their way to the Bay Area. The first, The Arrival of Spring in Woldgate, East Yorkshire in 2011, travelled to San Francisco’s de Young Museum in 2013-2014. Hockney drew those images in the countryside near his childhood home. They show the specific details of someone familiar with the place, someone who has walked those paths and lanes on hundreds of different days.

In an expanse of green flora about to blot out the sky, he draws an equestrian-crossing sign outlined in red; a many-limbed tree riotously blooming in all directions; and a crumbling stone wall on a curving, rose-colored road cluttered with unidentifiable, fanciful detritus.

Hockney is in complete command of his hands and his palette. He’s transforming East Yorkshire with his imagination, but the drawings are still identifiably in Woldgate, East Yorkshire. The artist makes a less convincing case with The Yosemite Suite now on view at Pace Gallery Palo Alto.

Most of the gallery is filled with smaller, framed prints (37" x 28" retailing for $20,000 each). With few exceptions, the drawings of trees, mountains, or trees and mountains, are vividly colored yet onedimensional in their effect. You can admire the daring magenta redwoods

as they edge upwards from an orange earth in Untitled No. 4, but this is a fantasy landscape. Hockney is drawing a heightened version of Yosemite, one that resembles the place in outline only. The loving details from The Arrival of Spring have mostly gone missing. In comparison, some of the Yosemite prints look like sketches, ideas in process or not fully formed. The standard book of postcards for sale reinforces the commercial imperative: the digital files of these drawings are standing by for reproduction, to hang in the air as innocuously as Muzak in corporate office lobbies and condominium kitchens.

This sunniness, usually such a refreshing aspect of Hockney’s work, acts as a narrative flattener here. The lone story he wishes to tell comes adorned with an unwritten tagline: “Isn’t Yosemite a gorgeous place to visit?” With this one question in mind, there’s nothing to disagree about, and even less to contemplate.

When visitors actually do show up outside the famous stone facade of the Grand Yosemite Hotel (formerly the Ahwahnee) in Untitled No. 1, the work feels livelier, that the artist is drawing a less generic place, even if it’s from the removed distance of a luxury hotel.

This isn’t a Yosemite populated with insects or snakes, scat or bears.

With the four large-scale prints (92-3/4" x 69-3/4" for $125,000 each), Hockney achieves something more elusive. The sense of scale, where art can meet the monumentality of nature, stands corrected. October 5, 2011 was particularly productive for him. He drew Yosemite I, II and III on that moodier day (or at least the title is attributed to that day). In I and II, Hockney jars the landscape with clouds, adding in a sense of mysticism.

He hazes over a copse of trees in III with a fine, gray mist. Something of the man himself makes it onto these canvases. The landscapes flicker with an undeniable emotional weather, where the wilderness can still keep, as the late art critic John Berger once put it, “the uniqueness of the single place where it is.”

As lifelike as it appears—with light glinting at the corner of its left eye and casting a shadow against the beige concrete column behind it, this oversized rodent is only a painting.

It’s part of a series of “interactive murals,” which the Redwood City Improvement Association has commissioned. Titled “Flora from Fauna,” the squirrel—along with other chrysanthemum-clutching critters, like deer, eagles, a fox and a great blue heron—were created by San Francisco-based fine artist and scientific illustrator Jane Kim, and are meant to engage pedestrians and get Flora from Fauna people to think about the wildlife that surrounds them.

Permanent “It’s meant to be a little surprising,” Kim says. “It’s Downtown supposed to be like: ‘Wait a minute, what’s this great Redwood City blue heron doing here?’”

Whether Kim’s work causes passersby to do a double take, she says residents of Redwood City ought not to be too surprised to see the animals she chose to paint—or the chrysanthemums. All of the creatures depicted in her series can be found in or nearby Redwood City, even if they aren’t likely to be hanging out downtown.

In this way, the fauna are all “residents” in a sense, she explains. And as for the flora, that has a local angle as well. In addition being known for its meteorological motto, “Climate Best by Government Test,” Redwood City was once known as the “Chrysanthemum Capital of the World,” as it was home to one of the largest chrysanthemum nurseries anywhere.

Kim, who runs her own studio—Ink Dwell—aims to inspire people to love the Earth and its wide diversity of life. This is not her first time working on a project that merged taxonomy and public art. She worked with the Cornell Lab of Ornithology on the massive “Wall of Birds”—featuring 270 life-sized birds painted on a world map. She is also responsible for a series of six bighorn sheep murals, which can be seen on walls along Highway 395 in California. Future Schlock LOST IN TRANSLATION Even setting aside gripes about Hollywood whitewashing, ‘Ghost in the Shell’ just isn’t that interesting.

Live-action ‘Ghost in the Shell’ is one shell of a movie

I

N THE HORRIFYING, dystopic future year of 2017, Scarlett Johansson has her face sawed off— “scanned” is the parlance.

Her kissable visage is used as a model for a digital avatar, roaming around Neo-SortaKinda-Tokyo killing her fellow avatars with a blaster.

She’s a federal cop called Major (Johannsen)—with human brain in a synthetic body—on the trail of terrorists assassinating execs from the robot-making Hanka corporation.

The investigation involves some cyber eavesdropping, rousting yakuza nightclubs, and penetrating a “lawless

zone” where the rebels live, scrawling their Unabomber-like manifestos.

Studying the live-action version of the distinguished 1995 anime film Ghost in the Shell, one broods over psychological questions. How much humanity can Johannsen have after all the movies where she’s been animated into a cartwheeling, hair-whirling, ass-kicking electronic phantom? Does ScarJo have any “glitches”—any unsanctioned memories—of her time sashaying around Tokyo in Lost in Translation?

She’s gone full android. Never go full android. Hushed and expressionless, she goes on missions in a Barbie-doll body sans nips and pudenda, as shiny as a factory-new Kia. (To break up that cream-cheese colored plastic glow, little blue blazes of lightning crackle over her frame, indicating a cloaking device).

ScarJo is supposed to be Japaneseoid: not Japanese but not notJapanese. Occidents will happen, even in movies with a lot of Shanghai money in them. One gets some comfort in seeing that the way you turn a European actor Japanese is exactly the way it was done 50 years ago in You Only Live Twice, when Sean Connery was brilliantly disguised as an Asian to outwit SPECTRE. Operating room, check; tapered eyebrows, check; and a shaggy haircut, in this case a kind of black horsehair version of a 1950s pixie cut.

Major is given support by the maternal scientist Dr. Ouelet (Juliette Binoche) as well as from a control, the paternal if ever-sinister Beat Takeshi—here with his own funny haircut, a cross between Larry Fine and Dick Tracy villain Flattop.

Since physical augmentation is the next killer ap, colossal holograms haunt the skyscrapers (as do lazy, sky-swimming koi). The oddest advertisement of them all is a pair of disembodied 70-foot-tall artificial legs

running laps in place in the air.

This looks like a fun city— Pepperland: Year 2500. There is a moment of a cop proudly showing off the scar where he got his new cyber-liver (“Now it’s closing time every night!”). Otherwise, Ghost in the Shell does without humor, except in one moment. Major’s partner Batou, played by Danish dreamboat Pilou Asbaek, shoots a thug and the man keels forward dead, face-planting into a jumbo bowl of ramen. That was as funny as it got. Director Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman) sets a tone of dead seriousness, as if a group of fanbois gripped him by the portal holes in the back of his neck.

As for the speculation of what cybernetic bits would change a person out of homo sapiens into some other category… you’d have to digest at least three years’ worth of Wired magazine to equal such thumb-suckage. The other question considered here is duty versus escape, the answer being, of course, “choose duty.”

ScarJo breaks a lot of real and synthetic bones, but the movie doesn’t break any new ground.

Ghost in the Shell wouldn’t exist without the original RoboCop— it’s a haunted, abject copy of the Verhoeven movie. The easy compare and contrast, given the holographic chimeras all over the place, is with Blade Runner. Alex Garland’s Ex Machina, now on Amazon Prime, took the most interesting parts of Blade Runner—the Turing-testing sequence—and wreaked them into a full length movie.

Nothing here is as good as Alicia Vikander showing up in a frumpy sweater and droopy stockings, a wistful machine trying to dress up like a human being. Since there was no equivalent in Ex Machina to Harrison Ford running around shooting androids, Ex Machina wasn’t the same kind of hit Blade Runner was. Ghost in the Shell isn’t interesting but there is a lot of blasting—that may send it over.

The days when the fest had a South Bay extension at the Palo Alto Square are gone, but the programming is still good enough to draw film fans up from the South Bay. The opener is the Sundance hit Patti Cake$, about a would-be rapper’s escape from New Jersey. The fest features a screening of Vertigo (1959) with commentary by the eminent film critic David Thomson; the Kronos Quartet have a live performance accompanying “The Green Fog,” a San Francisco tone poem by Guy Maddin and Evan Johnson. Melvin Van Peebles’ 1967 The Story of a Three-Day Pass, in which a black US soldier discovers Paris, receives a 50th anniversary screening. The Asian Dub Foundation performs a live score to George Lucas’s early movie THX-1138.

Local debuts include The Unknown Girl

by Belgium’s Dardennes Brothers and Yourself and Yours by Korea’s leading light of reprobate cinema, Hong Sangsoo. The Lost City of Z is James Gray’s uncharacteristic adaptation of David Grann’s novel of jungle adventure. Amir Bar-Lev’s Long Strange Trip salutes the Grateful Dead with previously unseen footage, but it’s hard to imagine that the music there could be better than I Called Him Morgan, the knockout Swedish documentary about Lee Morgan, the young, ill-fated trumpeter killed because of a bad snowstorm and a scorned common-law wife. Revivals THE SEVENTH VICTIM/THE LEOPARD MAN

(Both 1943). A private-school girl (Kim Hunter, debuting) seeks her missing older sister Jacqueline (Jean Brooks) who has vanished with little trace. She’s aided by a friendly if exasperating poet (Erford Gage, later killed in WW II), Jacqueline’s lover, a lawyer (Hugh Beaumont, later of Leave it to Beaver); and smooth, snide psychiatrist Dr. Louis Judd (Tom Conway) narrow the search to a nest of Greenwich Village satanists, called “the Palladists.” DeWitt Bodeen, the co-screenwriter, later claimed he had visited an actual society of satanists in the Upper West Side: “…they were casting their spells while they knitted and crocheted…a bunch of tea-drinking old ladies and gentlemen, sitting there muttering imprecations against Hitler.” (John Brosnan, The Horror People.) Scenes that pave the way for Psycho and Rosemary’s

(1959) The grandfather of the James Bond adventures, with evertraveling hero, gentlemanly villain and untrustworthy woman—and smashing set pieces scored to ominous music (Bernard Herrmann, here, at his best). When Madison Avenue ad man Roger O. Thornhill (Cary Grant) stands up at the wrong moment at the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan, he's mistaken for one Irving Kaplan, an American superagent; from this point on he's pursued across the continent by agents of the omniscient spymaster Van Damm (James Mason at his silkiest). Those sniffing around the subtext of Hitch can find some meat in the Taming of the Squire sequences, in which Thornhill gets treated by coolest of Hitchcock blondes Eva Marie Saint, like a trick who won't leave. Much elemental excitement here: the biplane sequence, still a model of suspense filmmaking, a surprise assassination, and a finale along the gigantic heads at Mt. Rushmore.

BIG EYES ‘Boss Baby’ delivers high brow hijinx for mom and dad, and plenty of bare-bottom jokes for the kids.

Cookies Are for Closers STRANGELY, HAVING human characters in a full-length animated 3D cartoon makes the ambience more cartoonish.

Zootopia turned the animals human, whereas The Boss Baby takes place in cartoonland. It’s vibrantly colorful, delightfully odd and seriously under the influence of Looney Tunes: Chuck Jones’ Walter Mitty pastiche “From A to ZZZ” (1954) and Bob Clampett’s “Baby Bottleneck” (1946) ought to open for this.

The daydreaming 7 ½ year old Timothy is an only child in a suburban paradise.

Timothy’s happiness is shattered by the arrival of a new baby brother who is a sort of goblin: an executive from Baby Corp., a suit-clad, attache case-holding hardcharger. Voiced by Alec Baldwin, this adult in baby disguise is there to keep an eye on a potentially calamitous development involving rivals. He’s prepared to tolerate Timothy as long as the boy minds his own business and lets him get all the parental attention. Parental love is a zero-sum game.

“We can share…” Timothy says. The baby cuts him off: “You obviously never went to business school.”

How Trump is this? The golden potty in the Boss Baby’s office rang a bell, but I’m

not feeling the parallels. Bald execs who act like vicious, bawling crybabies preceded the reign of Trump and will presumably survive him. It seems more Baldwin than Trump here: “Cookies are for closers!” the diapered tyrant snarls, making this the only family movie this year to have a reference to David Mamet.

Director Tom McGrath (Madagascar) seems liberated as never before to run with the various modes of this animation, from The Boss Baby breakneck kiddie-car chases to a snickering face PG, 98 Mins. in a mushroom cloud.

Valleywide The color is wild, with fauvist dream sequences of the Congolese jungle; flat, fun-house ultra-violet nightmares and a finale in Vegas. McGrath never seemed this macabre before. Only during a fraying third act (complete with missile countdown and catwalk fight) does the invention run thin. Baldwin’s amusing weaselry and manipulation stays fresh; meanwhile, the jumbo, Christmasornament-sized eyes and exposed butts lull the kids.

Baby occur in this thrifty but elegant Val Lewton production that never stints the strange detail, as in the quote carved in stone over the City Morgue: “He Calleth All His Children

By Their Name”). The menace is palpable. It could be described as creaky or campy by those preferring popups to the stately creation of terror. This devilish movie does get Christian-proofed, with an intoning of the Lord’s Prayer at a moment of crisis. But the vision of the malignancy of a cult is early and detailed. The aura of doom goes beyond the decor of Jacqueline’s bare room—a hangman’s noose and a chair are its only furniture. And there’s authenticity to Brooks’ iconic performance in the title role, dressed in Cleopatra wig and midnight-black fur coat. “Dipsomania is such a sordid business,” says Dr. Judd. This haunting actress, a sort of female version of the fascinating young Peter Lorre, wasn’t 50 when she died of a ruined liver at the Kaiser Hospital in Richmond. BILLED WITH The Leopard Man The skidding variety star Kiki (Brooks) and her press agent Jerry (Dennis O'Keefe) come to a small New Mexico town.

To give Kiki's nightclub act a push, they rent a black panther as a prop.

It escapes and terrorizes the town— but the simplest explanation for the night of terror isn’t the proper one.

Sin Fronteras PROGRESSIVE PUNKS Zeta are liberal in their political leanings and in their incorporation of multiple genres.

S

AN JOSE HAS a long and proud history of DIY. From the Chemical Free Zone and Channel One in the late ’90s and early 2000s, to the numerous houses that have doubled as makeshift venues, youth culture here has largely taken place outside of official channels, supported by community members working thanklessly to keep the scene alive.

But in recent years, primarily due to rising rents, more and more people involved in the community have left,

threatening the continued existence of music here. As the times have rapidly changed, the crucial work of sustaining a live youth music culture here has largely relied on one person: Stephanie Chang.

For half a decade now, Chang and her booking partner Gilberto Torres have almost singlehandedly kept San Jose on the map for internationally touring punk, noise, art and LGBTQ bands. That is no small feat. With a dearth of available venues willing to host all-ages shows, Chang and Torres have to get creative in their efforts to keep touring musicians coming to the city of 1 million, renting out community centers, taquerias, quinceanera halls, even the disconnected back room of a porno shop—anywhere willing to play host for the night.

“We pretty much book at any space that can accommodate an allages show,” Chang says.

Along the way Kitty Castle (a largely empty shipping warehouse in industrial Santa Clara) was the one consistent venue run by the two. But after the Ghost Ship tragedy in early December, Kitty Castle got caught up in a nationwide crackdown on DIY venues and live/work spaces.

Undeterred by that setback, Chang and Torres have continued to find local businesses willing to host shows. April 5 marks one of their most exciting post-Kitty Castle shows. Hosted by Playback Studios, a practice space on South 10th Street, the show is one of the few chances for Americans to see the exciting Venezuelan punk collective Zeta.

Zeta describe themselves as “avant experimental punk,” a descriptor that nicely captures the band’s exploratory style, which finds them bounding from mathy sections of technical riffing to spaced-out dub and blistering hardcore.

Their migratory musical style reflects

their political views, which are globalist and egalitarian in spirit. Like Fugazi, Refused and Bomb the Music Industry before them, Zeta mix styles to create new sonic avenues and expand the boundaries of punk music. But the similarities go deeper than that.

Arguably the most important thing about all of those bands is the example they set by living their lives as a visible alternative to the mainstream, surviving as musicians without agents, without managers, sponsors, or major labels. Zeta are now in their second decade carrying the torch for these principles in Venezuela.

The Puerto la Cruz band come to San Jose after playing SXSW a few weeks back, and are currently touring on their new EP Slingshot, the group’s 13th release in as many years. For a band that has always been exploratory, Slingshot represents yet another unexpected path for the group. The EP features New York artist Chris Pyrate (primarily known as a comic illustrator) as a guest member. On it Zeta pulls back on punk, acting as backing band for Pyrate’s introspective rap verses and spoken word interludes. The record sounds a bit like a dubby version of Things Fall Apart era Roots, and at four tracks it ends just when the listener is starting to get into the headspace it creates. Short though it is, Slingshot is another fierce statement on the fluidity of genres and borders from a group who has made that statement their guiding principle.

Opening the show is VWLS, whose members have long been a part of San Jose’s underground scene. The three piece oscillate (somewhat wildly) between chaotic hardcore and molasses-slow sludge, and feature members of The Pillowfights, The Albert Square, Dukes Up, and Great Hart, among many others.

“A lot of bands from other countries or touring from out of state want to play in San Jose because we’ve had good shows here before,” Chang says, before something that sums up her whole project: “It builds community.”

BE THE CHANGE The Catalyst Quartet seek to diversify the repertoire and ranks of professional players.

A Classical Catalyst THERE’S NO QUESTION that the Catalyst Quartet love playing music.

Why else would they have taken the time to rearrange Bach’s infamous Goldberg Variations for violins, viola and cello?

But the string quartet never play music just for the sake of playing, according to Catalyst co-founder Karlos Rodriguez. “You will never have an experience with the Catalyst Quartet that isn’t about something larger than the music being presented,” he says. “Our programming is about having a larger narrative and telling a story.”

Such is the case with their current program, which they bring to San Jose this week. “Hemispheres: South America” is a collection of compositions by Latin American composers who, according to Rodriguez, are underrepresented in the contemporary classical world.

Rodriguez and the rest of Catalyst aim to change that.

“We are interested and concerned with invigorating the string quartet repertoire,” he says.

The internationally acclaimed quartet will perform pieces by Heitor VillaLobos, Diego Vegas, Astor Piazzolla and Alberto Ginastera. According to Rodriguez, there is a unifying theme that runs through all of these pieces.

Namely, the “visceral and gestural” nature of contemporary classical music from South America. Compared with the placid tones of someone like Morton Feldman or Philip Glass, these Latin composers infuse their music with more movement.

“The rhythms come from a much more physical place and a much more earthly place,” he says. “You can feel it in the body.”

In addition to working to bring a broader spectrum of international composers into American concert halls, the Catalyst are attempting to increase diversity in their field.

That’s where the Sphinx Performance Academy comes in. The academy seeks to nurture talented young African American and Latino string players, with the hope that more people of color will find their way into the ranks of professional symphony players. —Nick Veronin

I’m a woman in my 30s. I was married for five years, but now, thank God, I’m divorced and about two years into a wonderful new relationship. Disturbingly, I occasionally call my boyfriend by my awful ex-husband’s name. He laughs it off, but it really freaks me out. Should I see a neurologist? Is my memory going? Or—gulp—do I miss my ex on some subconscious level?—Disturbed Right about now, you’ve got to be recognizing the unexpected benefits of those gas station attendant shirts with the guy’s name sewn onto them.

As with dead bodies carelessly submerged after mob hits, it’s unsettling to have your ex’s name bobbing up when you love somebody new. Naturally, you suspect the worst, that you’re subconsciously pining for the ex. But—good news!— the likely reason for your name swapperoos is something you should find comfortingly boring. According to research by cognitive scientists Samantha Deffler and David C. Rubin, we’re prone to grab the wrong name out of memory when both names are in the same category—for example, men you’ve been seriously involved with or, in the pet domain, gerbils you’ve dressed in tiny sexy outfits.

You might also keep in mind that your ex’s name was the default for “man in my life” for more than twice as long as

the new guy’s. Other memory research suggests that especially when you’re tired, stressed, or multi-tasking, it’s easy to go a little, uh, cognitively imprecise.

You send your mindslave off into your brain—back to the “My Guy” category— and the lazy little peasant just grabs the name he spent five years grabbing.

So, you might think of this as a mental workforce issue. The Department of Emotions isn’t even involved.

However, research by cognitive psychologist Robert Bjork suggests that you can train your memory to do better through “spaced retrieval,” which is correcting yourself just postflub by asking and answering “Who is the man in my life?” and then letting a few minutes pass and doing it again.

But considering that you have a partner who just laughs at your errors, your time would probably be better spent appreciating what you have: an easy going sweetheart of a guy and no readily apparent need for a neurologist.

I’m extremely insecure about my looks, though objectively, I know I’m pretty.

One oft-overlooked beauty secret is to avoid constantly giving a guy the idea that you might actually be ugly.

One way women chip away at rivals is by trashtalking another woman’s looks to a man—suggesting he really could do better. That’s what you’re doing, but to yourself. It’s the relationship version of “Ewww, you’re not really gonna eat that, are you?” (And you’re the fricasseed crickets.)

The fact that your need for reassurance seems bottomless suggests it’s not your exterior but your interior that’s in need of work.

LAST Festival, Paseo challenge help Hammer Theatre reinvention

WO SIMULTANEOUS matrices of creative endeavor take over Hammer Theatre and Paseo de San Antonio this weekend, both of which will be open to the public and completely free of charge. The fourth incarnation of the LAST Festival (Life, Art, Science, Tech) will unfold inside the theater, beginning with a reception Friday evening and continuing with media art installations and provocative panel discussions all Saturday.

LAST Festival founder Piero Scaruffi—also an author, scientist and cultural historian—organized the panel sessions, while SJSU art professor and former ZERO1 Executive Director Joel Slayton curated the art installations.

At the same time, Hammer Theatre and environs will host the final weekend of Paseo Public Prototyping Challenge, in which several student teams from San Jose State University (SJSU) invent—a.k.a. “prototype”—solutions to social and environmental challenges through student-focused, multidisciplinary collaboration and technological innovation. That is, students design projects to make San Jose a more interesting place and then compete for prizes. You'll see demonstrations, workshops and presentations, outside

and inside Hammer Theatre.

For the LAST Festival, about 16 artists’ installations comprise the exhibit, offering a fresh look at how the convergence of art, science and technology instigate new forms of social interactions. Many of the artists are students or student-aged multidisciplinary characters near the beginning of their careers. The exhibit is not one of those lofty academic artspeak-a-thons that compare and contrast Foucault's elaboration of the panopticon with the bottom-up strategy of genetic algorithms, or something similar. Instead, the whole thing is refreshingly downmarket. The artists are measuring stuff, making stuff, sharing their experiences and supplying components of critique and reflection as a compliment to the Paseo Prototype Challenge’s giddy optimism.

“What's interesting to me is that it's low budget, emerging artists,” Slayton says. “Most of them are at the first stage of their career. They represent a kind of millennial thinking. All of them

have grown up in technoculture in a way that is really unique. So, having a chance to see how they’re interpreting and perceiving and interacting with the world, I think, is really refreshing.

There’s a kind of maker rawness to what these artists are doing, that you don’t see in a more refined exhibition.”

The challenge grew out of several ideas to activate Paseo de San Antonio. In addition to the city, SJSU and the Tech Museum, several other partners are involved, including Intel, Microsoft and Autodesk. The SJSU art department’s Craig Hobbs is at the helm, along with faculty from art, engineering, computer science and other disciplines. Student teams from every possible field of study are competing. In fact, so many people are involved with this adventure that it's hard to keep track of everything, but expect some intriguing civic innovation projects like solarpowered sidewalks, cold storage technology for fruit and vegetable pop-up vendors, or skateboard trucks that power lights for visibility. Yowza.

At both the Paseo Public Prototyping Challenge and the LAST Festival, attendees get to witness young and new interpretations of the world. College-age artists are discussing aspects of cognition, the environment, social interaction and the role data gathering plays in society. Would-be entrepreneurs are conspiring on ways to make San Jose a more interesting place. When we look at the world through a fresh pair of eyes, it just reinforms us. That’s a good thing.

All of this is a perfect example of how the Hammer Theatre project is evolving. Students and civic projects.

Artists and scientists. Musicians and garage tinkerers. Exactly the type of collaborative congregation that San Jose should be celebrating.

In Slayton’s case, he’s retiring from SJSU after running the CADRE Lab in the art building for 20 years and then executively directing ZERO1 for another eight years. So curating the artists for the LAST Festival was a logical last call.

The evolution of the Hammer Theatre provided a perfect situation.

SJ Crawfish joins the crowded sea of Cajun-Vietnamese restaurants

REAK IT IN half and suck the head. That’s the motto for eating crawfish. There’s no better way to do it. For the uninitiated, crawfish are tiny lobster-like crustaceans found in muddy waters. When boiled with potatoes, Andouille sausage, corn, lots of butter and Cajun spices, they become a finger-food delicacy, best for social occasions.

San Jose has experienced a wave of new crawfish and Cajun restaurants over the last decade. And while new restaurant growth has slowed, the

cuisine still remains a favorite among young and old alike. SJ Crawfish is one of the latest to offer a crawfish boil menu.

Set in the same plaza on North Capitol Avenue as newly opened neighbor Pho Tick Tock, SJ Crawfish offers a spacious dining room suitable for large parties, which makes sense considering how crawfish are best enjoyed. The crawfish here are served in double plastic bags weighed out for portion size. The Combo #1 ($36.99) contains one pound of crawfish, a pound of shrimp, another pound of mussels, two corn on the cobs, two potatoes and six pieces of sausage.

We ordered our combo with Cajun seasoning at original-mild spice level.

Among the other flavor choices were tamarind, pineapple, and SJ Style, which is all the above. Spice levels range from mild to very spicy with an

option for increased habañero pepper.

The crawfish meat was sweet and the seasoning was flavorful with a strong kick. Err on the conservative side with spice level selection, as the lowest level is still plenty hot. The combo provided more protein than an all-crawfish bag, thanks to the heavier shrimp, and the corn and sausage pieces soak up all the flavor, making for an interesting bite.

Like most Cajun-Vietnamese joints, SJ Crawfish serves their food in plastic bags by the pound, on top of a table covered with butcher paper, paper plates and plastic utensils. All of our membranethin plastic bibs, which come with a generic red lobster picture, broke at the straps. But this wasn’t our first crawfish rodeo: we came prepared in clothes we didn’t mind dirtying. Using plastic gloves to tear off the crawfish exoskeletons, we dipped the hard-earned tail meat into small plastic containers of salt, pepper and lime juice. It’s a combination I prefer to clarified butter.

All this salty and spicy protein needs a starch for balance, and the garlic rice ($5.95) is a nice compliment. Roughly chopped

garlic hunks were fried to add a fragrant aroma to the white rice.

The sauce of the seafood masked any shortcomings in the rice.

I can never resist Asian-style chicken wings, as I am constantly on the hunt for the perfect wing. The SJ fried chicken wings with tamarind sauce ($9.95) caught my eye, because they’re not the usual soy or salt and pepper version.

They ended up being my favorite part of the meal: tangy and crispy as expected with just enough tamarind.

The crawfish meat was sweet and the seasoning was flavorful with a strong kick Out of curiosity, I tried the steamed obtuse horn snail in coconut ($11.95).

Snails are common in Vietnamese cuisine and I’ve had them before as appetizers, but the coconut broth was a first. The snails’ shells are horn shaped and spiral, making it difficult to remove the meat with a pick. The chef clips the end of each snail so meat can be sucked out. The snails don’t have much flavor— except for the rare and unfortunate gritty ones tasting of mud—and the coconut broth was just too sweet for me.

For anyone unfamiliar with the Cajun-Vietnamese food craze, a place like SJ Crawfish may seem unique.

It’s actually very standard, even down to the sea blue walls and plastic fish and netting hung around the store.

There’s often a sea theme that’s been interpreted in an over-the-top manner.

The secret sauce that determines such a restaurant’s staying power is literally the sauce in the crawfish. SJ Crawfish is enjoyable and has potential to outlive its competitors.

THE LAYERS Purple Onion has a versatile, healthy menu.

I Want Some Purple Stuff

HE ADAGE THAT breakfast is the most important meal of the day might ring true in some respects, but many restaurants undermine this maxim with carb-overloaded, pre-diabetic plates that leave diners in a food coma.

Then comes Purple Onion Cafe to rescue breakfast with its light and healthy fare. Hardly a newcomer to the game, the Willow Glen coffeeshop is the local chain’s third location, with the other two being in Los Gatos. Housed in the historic Garden Theater in the heart of downtown Willow Glen, Purple Onion’s new spot has a small yet wellcurated menu featuring egg-white omelets, breakfast sandwiches, burritos and even some simple granola and yogurt. They also serve up a nice selection of sandwiches, soups and salads at any time. But what’s a cafe without some eye-opening coffee? Purple Onion has this covered with a terrific little coffee bar featuring world-renowned Illy coffee.

We decided to order up a Spinach Quiche ($8.95) and Lox Plate ($8.95), and for the beverages we procured a double Vanilla Latte ($2.75 plus 75 cents a shot) and a double Mocha ($3.25 + 75 cents a shot).

The smoked salmon came out with a pre-sliced French baguette, cream cheese, red onions, capers, cucumbers and a delightful sun-dried tomato cream cheese to make custom petite sandwiches. The salmon was lightly smoked and fork tender, but the highlight was the cream cheese that had a subtle sweetness and featured delicious little chunks of tomato. The quiche was equally amazing, as the eggs were cooked so delicately they almost had a buttery, cream-like consistency.

The Vanilla Latte started off a touch too sweet but had a nice, strong finish thanks to the double-shot of espresso. Meanwhile, the double Mocha was smooth from beginning to end, as an earthy chocolate flavor married well to the coffee without being too sweet.

Even though we were trying to keep it light, I couldn’t resist getting a house-made Nutella Twist ($2.75), which is a puff pastry filled with everyone’s favorite milk chocolate and hazelnut spread. The twist was light, airy and had a nice helping of Nutella to make my taste buds sing.

A change of pace from the typical greasy spoon breakfast joint, Purple Onion provides a fresh, healthy and delicious menu that features worldclass coffee and tasty pastries.
