Walk This Way I saw you walking slowly toward the elderly woman, your face hidden under a hood and behind sunglasses.

She was walking down the street, hunched over, taking her time to avoid palm tree debris on the sidewalk after the big storms. You started to slow down as you approached her and I’m sure the woman held her breath just like I did. But then you crouched down and moved the tree branches off of the sidewalk so the woman wouldn’t have to step off the curb and risk falling.

She took little pitter-patter steps and continued on her way, and it reminded me that good Samaritans wear hoods, too.

Record Skips The term “fake news” gets thrown around frequently these days, but the Santa Clara Weekly might want to slow its roll in claiming moral high ground. This month, Fly reported on Weekly publisher MILES BARBER’s lawsuit against blogger ROBERT HAUGH, who’s been critical of his former employer. A day after the story was published, Weekly editor ANGIE TOLLIVER emailed a demand for correction, noting that Haugh was fired instead of departing voluntarily. Having been accused last year of “hipster racism”—whatever that means—by Weekly reporter CAROLYN SCHUK, Fly elected to pose some questions to Tolliver and ask why Haugh was sacked. Tolliver replied by email: “You know I legally can’t disclose the reason for an employee’s termination.” Fly informed Tolliver it did not know this, as state law doesn’t forbid former employers from disclosing the reasons for a termination, though there’s civil liability exposure for maligning a person’s employment prospects. Fly also asked how the Weekly felt about its City Hall reporter, Schuk, routinely reporting on a nonprofit arts foundation she created without mentioning this little detail to readers. MELISSA MCKENZIE, a fellow Weekly staffer and board member for the They nonprofit, also neglected Did to disclose this conflict to readers. Elected officials who have given cash to the nonprofit, according to its website, include: Santa Clara Mayor LISA GILLMOR’s real estate company; council members TERESA O’NEILL and PAT KOLSTAD; City Clerk ROD DIRIDON JR.; U.S. Rep. RO KHANNA; and former Santa Clara Mayor JAMIE MATTHEWS. Other donors include the 49ers, who were noted as “outstandingly generous sponsors,” and developers who have major contracts in front of the City Council, such as the Related Companies’ $6.5 billion retail project. Tolliver then said her comments were “off the record,” which again is not how journalism works.

Common practice requires both sides to agree to speaking terms before a conversation. As for whether Weekly reporters are diligent to doff their reporter caps before shaking down sources for money, Tolliver told Fly that this never happens “on the clock” and she doesn’t think it affects their reporting. Schuk refused to meet to review her nonprofit’s financials.

A

S A SINGLE MOM with a full-time job, the last thing Valentina Renales has time for is a bureaucratic paper chase.

But for the past year, the 38-year-old mother of three has gone through dozens of emails, countless phone calls, three caseworkers and two managers in a battle to keep her child care subsidy—her path out of poverty.

“I’m scared I’ll lose this,” Renales says, visibly exhausted at the end of a recent weekday. “It allows me to work, to put aside money for college, to expose my children to early education, to purchase a car, to better myself as a person. Without child care,

none of this would be possible.”

Unsubsidized day care, however, would cost something on the order of $4,000 a month for her 5-year-old, Savanna, and toddler, Ava. “That’s way more than I bring home each month,” says Renales, who makes $16 an hour as a classroom aide at Rocketship Education, a chain of publicly funded, privately run charter schools.

Her concerns have been falling on deaf ears. The Community Child Care Council of Santa Clara County—known as 4Cs, or the 4C Council—lost Renales’ case file and fell behind on paperwork. She found out that the publicly funded nonprofit overstated her income by $5,800 a year, understated her family size and apparently miscalculated her subsidy.

The agency, which relies on roughly $45 million a year in public funding, has also fallen several thousands of dollars behind on payments to her children’s daycare, Action Day Primary.

“We’re going on a year without this

being resolved,” Renales says. “That’s why people are refusing to work with 4Cs—they aren’t getting paid.

Thousands of families depend on this agency, and it’s failing them.”

Employees at 4Cs say that at least 100 cases went missing at one point, prompting a manager to order staff to stop what they were doing and go on a “scavenger hunt” until they found them.

Another source said 4Cs is so backlogged that, in addition to the missing files, there are more than 1,000 unassigned cases. Several more employees say they hope the heightened attention from regulators will force the nonprofit to correct course. Last week, a handful of attachés from the California Department of Education (CDE)— the nonprofit’s primary funder— walked into the 4Cs north San Jose headquarters to begin an in-depth audit.

“They better get to the bottom of this,” Renales says. “These are people’s lives we’re talking about.”

The 4C Council is responsible for subsidizing child care for more than 5,500 children in Silicon Valley. Since last fall, Metro has reported about the rampant dysfunction, crippling staff turnover, shuttered daycare centers

to a dozen and the per-person caseload went from about 20 to more than 100.

“Management has lost the vision of the mission of the agency,” Gonzalez says. “They’re no longer there for the community.”

Under Villaseñor’s leadership, day care centers have closed and families that depend on subsidies fear losing them because 4Cs misses deadlines. Day care centers that depend on 4Cs to reimburse them have gone months without getting paid. A growing number of those facilities refuse to work with 4Cs clients because of the agency’s track record.

Contractors have operated with little oversight, leading to a lawsuit filed earlier this year against 4Cs for allegedly failing to prevent two girls from being sexually assaulted by an employee at one home daycare. Despite a waiting list tens of thousands of names long, 4Cs struggles to meet enrollment targets.

Confidence in the organization was also shaken by changes in leadership.

Sofia Mendoza, a revered community leader, was deeply involved with 4Cs, serving for years on its board of directors before her death in 2015. Ben Menor, her successor as chair of the board, has earned less respect because of his 2008 no contest plea to charges that were later dismissed in an embezzlement scandal at another nonprofit.

Other problems have only come to light because of a protracted battle between employees who voted to unionize. In February, Metro reported on a retiree’s pension being withheld. Right after that story and seven months after her last day on the job, the retiree, Gloria Pena, got her first check in the mail.

Meanwhile, four sources familiar with the situation say the nonprofit’s attorneys have admitted at the negotiating table that both pension accounts run afoul of federal law.

According to union reps, Villaseñor also excluded an entire category of staffers from receiving pensions, misclassifying teachers and their aides as temps even if they worked at 4Cs for several years.

Employees and union reps have begged state lawmakers and education officials to investigate, and say they welcome the CDE’s audit.

“Maybe they’re finally listening to us,” says Kristy Sermersheim, interim chief elected officer of the SEIU Local 521 and lead negotiator for the 4Cs workers.

“We’re all frustrated that there’s been no accountability for an organization that has a shaky relationship with the truth.”

and missing retirement payments at the 45-year-old agency. New details, however, indicate that the future of 4Cs—the South Bay’s single largest taxpayer-funded nonprofit—grows increasingly uncertain.

An internal memo stamped Feb. 3, 2016, and mistakenly disclosed to Metro by the CDE, noted that the South Bay nonprofit had incurred operating losses in four of the prior six years.

The weakening financial condition prompted alarm in Sacramento.

“If the contractor continues this overall trend, there is a greater possibility that the contractor will soon be unable to continue as a going concern,” CDE audit manager J.R. Waltz wrote. The term “going concern” is an accounting term used to flag insolvent entities. Metro asked to see similar memos going back to 2010, but CDE spokesman Robert Oakes denied the request.

According to state education code, CDE has three options for dealing with a contractor in such dismal financial straits: continue the contracts with 4Cs as is, impose stricter conditions or not renew them at all. The state has until early April to decide, which may explain the timing of the audit—although it’s unclear what prompted the probe.

Oakes went incommunicado, as did 4Cs Executive Director Alfredo Villaseñor.

But in a notice sent to employees, Villaseñor dismissed claims that the organization is in poor financial health.

“Today, I was contacted by a local reporter who alleges that she has in her possession a copy of an internal audit memo form (sic) the California Department of Education that alleges that our organization ‘is headed toward insolvency,’” he wrote Friday.

“Recognizing the political environment our organization is currently in, I am writing to directly address these issues with you. I want to be clear in stating that our organization has been in existence for 45 years, and has always been financially responsible.”

He ended the missive by urging staffers to stay focused on the important work of helping the county’s most vulnerable residents.

“On that mission, we will never quiver,” he wrote. Presumably he meant “quaver” or “waver.”

But Yaxin Gonzalez, a 4Cs case manager, says the agency has strayed from its mission to help struggling families, prompting an exodus of institutional knowledge. The number of case managers fell from more than 30

T’S NO STRETCH to say the South Bay foodie scene has gone a bit insane. The public now demands food ondemand, to exact gluten per-particle specifications, with assurances that the animals were given free range of motion before meeting a tender demise pre-tenderization. We also want our food to follow us, which has given rise to a small army of food trucks crisscrossing the South Bay like some nomadic tribe of culinary barbarians. These chef-trepreneurs vary in style and allegiances, as some prefer to keep it simple while others savage tradition and fuse together disparate ingredients like Young Frankenstein. Regardless, these cooks on wheels demand respect, as food trucks are no longer relegated to greasy spoon hankerings; they’re diverse, daring and definitively codified in our culinary DNA. To celebrate these wayward food warriors, as well as honor the nation’s annual basketball meltdown, March Madness, which returns to Silicon Valley this week after a four-year hiatus, we present our foodie version of Bracketology. While it was impossible to sample every one of the 300 or so food trucks—not food carts—floating around the valley, Metro consulted with the operators of Moveable Feast (www.mvblfeast.com), the South Bay’s preeminent food truck promoters and curators, to help compile 16 contenders to battle it out for food truck supremacy. A diverse cast of cuisines were sampled and the results are admittedly subjective, so save the bias BS. Without further ado, let the Munch Madness begin.

PADDY WAGON SLIDERS Mac Daddy: $9 Chili Bang Bang Tots: $9 This jailhouse-inspired food truck is packed with some of the guiltiest pleasures to be found on four wheels: hamburger sliders, but with a twist. Their Mac Daddy ($9)— served with two sliders and a heaping pile of signature tater tots—gets the ultimate beauty treatment. These lookers are layered with shredded lettuce, a quarter-pound beef patty, a smear of thousand island dressing and a golden cheddar cheese crisp that will have customers drifting into a post-meal slumber. Their Chili Bang Bang Tots ($9) also provide a slight twist on chili cheese fries, swapping fries for crispy golden blocks. Let’s just say we wouldn’t mind doing some time in solitary with these dishes.

What may look like an average food truck is more like a restaurant with outdoor patio seating. The fully stocked salsa bar helps make Spartan a popular weekend after-party destination. The carne asada crispy tacos, served as a trio for $7, are mini mountains loaded with steak on a small fried tortilla and doused with a tasty balance of sour cream, avocado, melted mozzarella cheese and topped with pico de gallo. The yellow-orange signature sauce adds a spicy kick, but it’s nothing an ice cold mandarin Jarritos can’t overcome.

This not-so-ordinary taco truck slathers chipotle sriracha and mango sauce on its offering to give sweet undertones and a teasing hint of spice that creeps on the tastebuds. Massive appetites paired with moderate budgets will make the Knockout Burrito a worthy adversary. Just don’t be surprised when awaking from a food coma.

Juicy pork belly overflows out of two large toasted baked bao buns to make for a messy delight. Chairman’s signature sandwich ($7.25) intertwines the savory sour taste of pickled daikon with tender pork belly, adding levels of taste with a mouth-watering aroma that seeps through the packaging the moment it’s served. The bun is more pleasing to the mouth than they eyes, as it lacks the wow factor at first glance— but the first bite erases all doubt. The pork belly is marinated to balance the buns, which have a dainty crisp outside while keeping a moist and soft interior. It’s a bit of relief to walk away without feeling too heavy.

Put it this way: If Wingstop had received more love and attention as a child it would have grown up to be West Wing.

This food truck, run by co-owners J.P. Victoria and Ralph, provides an elevated, refined and adventurous take on the classic chicken wing—bone in or out.

The Adobo Glaze wings (5-piece, bone in) served with mac salad and rice ($10) is a shoulder-shaker that leaves no regrets. The fried chicken is smothered in a tangy, sweet garlic soy glaze that not only justifies but outright demands the fingers be licked. Because this is an audacious mission, we also ordered the Hot Honey tenders (3 piece for $6.50). Their blend of traditional hot sauce mixed with honey and a touch of habañero and ghost pepper packed a glorious punch.

METRO ON METRO Favoritism in name only goes so far, as Metro Balderas’ al pastor tacos deserve praise.

Long before mobile gourmet dining was a twinkle in some hipster’s eye, there were taco trucks. The oft-white loncheras remain ubiquitous throughout the South Bay, camped outside office parks and construction sites and serving up greasy Mexican grub to roustabouts and techies alike. Thankfully, the food truck impresarios behind Moveable Feast and Off the Grid tend to include at least one taquero per event. Tacos de Los Altos stands among the best of them, although the prices are a little higher than what one might expect to pay at a flea market food truck. We especially loved the quesadilla suiza al pastor ($8), basically a quesadilla with pork and crema, which was served hot off the grill with char marks on a giant tortilla. Because we’re a sucker for fried bread, we also ordered a side of sopes, which came generously heaped with lengua, beans, lettuce, tomato, crema and cheese for just $3.50.

METRO BALDERAS Tacos (Chicken, Carne Asada and Al Pastor): $2 each Mexican Coca-Cola: $2.50 Metro Balderas might just be the most authentic Mexican food truck to make the tourney. While it’s not part of the Moveable Feast network, the tacos have legit street cred. Located at San Carlos Street and Lincoln Avenue in San Jose, the truck draws nearby workers and residents into a parking lot that shares space with a payday lending company.

The cashier spoke only Spanish and accepts only cash, which required a quick trip to an

3 GEEKS Philly Cheesesteak: $10.49 Smothered in cheese, caramelized onions, grilled peppers and thinly-sliced, well-seasoned beef, it’s no surprise that 3 Geeks’ Philly cheesesteak ($10.49) makes for a simple, filling food truck feast. Served on a warm 8-inch bun, they aren’t trying to reinvent the wheel. But good luck getting your mouth around this sandwich, which was big enough to send us to the couch for the rest of the day while still having leftovers for a second lunch. The price point is definitely reasonable, as the sandwich is large enough to split for two.

and fair-haired newbs. Fairycakes is guaranteed to satisfy the wildest of sweet dreams. This white truck of treats is booming with flavors, which to name a few include lemon cheesecake, tiramisu, churro and Boston cream pie. Each cupcake ($3) is served warm and gooey like it was made to order.

Professional packaging makes these little devils look even sweeter than they taste. Whether indulging in the Triple Chocolate or sweetening things up with the bananas Foster, Fairycakes makes for an exceptional on-the-run dessert.

Bring a couple of friends (or not) and get a sixth cupcake free when buying five. The capper: free cups of milk.

CAPELO’S BBQ Grilled Chicken BBQ Plate: $13 Napkins should be at the ready when Capelo’s BBQ comes to a hood near you. Our Southern cravings were smothered into submission by a plate of tender white-meat chicken served in an intimidating portion. Even for those with limited appetites, it’s futile to resist the succulent bird and the way it strips apart with tender resignation. The accompanying pasta, Fairycakes immersed in melted cheese and spices, makes for one of the richest, creamiest mac and cheeses found on wheels. Taking a brief a break from the tangy sauces, we broke through the crunchy surface of the corn muffin to find a soft, warm, pillowy interior. Any guilt to be found in the massive meal was quickly dismissed as Capelo’s signs note that the truck serves organic meat and gluten-free sauces.

We went with chicken, carne asada and an al pastor taco, the latter at the recommendation of a woman who kindly offered to buy lunch if we couldn’t locate an ATM. Along with a bottle of real Coca Cola (see Mexico) the tab came to $8.50 The chicken was juicy and had just enough kick with the delicious salsa, while the carne asada was lean and chewy the way a true street taco should be. But it was the al pastor that shut it down. Crunchy, thick-cut slices of pork had us begging we’d paid more heed to our fellow customer.

Hoops Insanity at SAP Center For the first time since 2013, “The Big Dance” returns to Silicon Valley. SAP Center in San Jose will play host to the NCAA men’s basketball tournament’s West regional round, otherwise known as the Sweet 16 and Elite 8. The lone team to advance from the four schools playing at SAP—Arizona, Gonzaga, Xavier and West Virginia—will earn a coveted spot in the Final Four.

On Wednesday, SAP will host a regional open practice event that is free to the public. It will give fans an inside look at each of the four teams competing on Thursday. Game tickets are not required for admission to the open practices, and doors open at 11am. Each team will practice for 50 minutes, one after another as the first team starts at noon and the final team begins at 3pm.

Throughout the week, alumni associations will be hosting parties across the valley. Expect activity to fill the streets of downtown San Jose with fans repping their respective teams and chanting fight songs all the way to the arena.

Thursday’s first game will tip off at 4:39pm, when the top-seeded team in the West, the No. 1 Gonzaga Bulldogs, face their toughest tourney test yet in the up-tempo West Virginia Mountaineers, who were seeded fourth. The Zags have been a popular pick to win the national championship, but the length and athleticism of WVU’s front-court pose a tough matchup that’s been highly anticipated since the brackets were first revealed.

Immediately following the first game, the No. 2 Arizona Wildcats will take on the lowest remaining seed in the tournament, No.11 Xavier Musketeers. The game is set to tipoff at 7:09pm but is subject to change depending on what happens in the first game. Arizona is close enough to consider this a home game, but experts have suggested the game could be an upset as Xavier looks to continue its Cinderella run.

Winners of Thursday’s games will face off Saturday at SAP and compete for a coveted spot in the Final Four, which will be held in Phoenix.

Saturday’s game time is still to be determined.

Just reaching the Sweet 16 is a goal for many of the tournament’s lower seeds, but San Jose plays hosts to squads that have high expectations the rest of the way. The three other regional sites for this week include Kansas City, Memphis and New York City. —Benjamin Siepak

ADAPTING HISTORY Fri, 9:30pm, $7 Montalvo Arts Center, Saratoga American history collides with the beats, spoken-word poetry and multiple personalities of musician, rapper and performance artist Dahlak.

In collaboration with Montalvo Arts Center’s Educational Department, this one-man show presents a musical narrative aimed at challenging onedimensional portrayals of the black experience in America. Weaving together the sounds of blues, jazz, R&B and hip-hop, Dahlak explores adaptation in its many forms. Literally wearing multiple hats over the course of the show, the Def Poetry Jam alumnus demonstrates how code switching is not just a curious social phenomenon, but in fact a complex survival mechanism. Oakland-based doom band Catapult The Dead prefer to take their time developing their songs. Case in point: they took a page out of Sleep’s playbook by eschewing track listings and presenting All Is Sorrow as a single 37-minute track. For more than half an hour, their album’s title track sprawls through eerie synth patches, haunting piano plunks and plenty of chugging, palm-muted guitar riffs and guttural growling—natch. (NV)

HERE’S AN IMMEDIATE sense of liberation, from logic and rationality, from meaning itself in a room full of abstract art. You can project nothing, something or everything at the busy, complicated canvases lining the walls.

The subject matter of Oliver Lee Jackson’s paintings — colorful colliding lines and shapes — appears to be floating and drifting toward the

canvas edges as if earth's gravity was about to escape. The exhibit Oliver Lee Jackson: Composed, Works from 1984 to 2016 also contains three sculptures, but their heaviness doesn’t hold the same ocular allure as the painted works.

As you enter the gallery, Painting (12.19.84), 1984, an oil pastel, dominates the space. It acts against some similarly styled paintings as a patriarchal figure from which the smaller versions have sprung. A great mass of ochre, with smudges of green, turns restlessly in the center of the canvas. Demented black lines form spectral figures on top of this and other clouds of turbulent color. It could be a danse macabre or a Carnival parade in New Orleans. It’s also worth

mentioning how much white space Jackson leaves visible. The vibrant colors breathe it in like oxygen: it brings them to life and un-muddies them.

In the gallery opposite, a different kind of abstraction is taking place.

Where Jackson’s work is all old (if experimental) media—ink and oil and pigments—Sonic Futures means to entertain its audience with new media’s breathlessness. Start with Jeepneys by Anna Luisa Petrisko. It’s a 3 minute video installation that plays like a music video from 2057. The editing flashes in front of the eye like blasts of lightning.

The future is posited as a place where attention spans no longer exist. You’ll be able to comprehend the content if multitasker is your middle name.

This 150-second video pairs mobile creativity with romance. When the anonymous tapping fingers type in,

Tucked away in the Project Room at the back end of Sonic Futures is Tamara Staples: Side Effects May Include. It’s only one ordinary room, but one that packs an emotional wallop. Staples’ sister Sherilyn committed suicide in 2012. When she asked her brother-in-law to send her the contents of her medicine cabinet, there were 114 medications.

The room Staples has created is a terrible wonderland made entirely of pills. Pills in an intricate design that pattern a dress. Pills forming a motif on the wallpaper. Pills covering a quilt, the curtains. Pills on every available surface of Sherilyn’s last, psychic bedroom. Staples turns the addiction inside out.

For all the fast, immediate attractions of audio and video, it’s Staples’ small room that’s most affecting.

She’s transformed a tragic inquiry about the nation’s polypharmacy epidemic, and her grief, into a haunting epitaph for her sister.

Little Ms. Firecracker WHEN WICKED PREVIEWED in San Francisco a decade or so ago, Kristin Chenoweth had just created the role of Galinda. Later to become the goody-two-shoes known as Glinda the Good, Galinda was the unconsciously mean sorority-sister type at a lady’s school in the turbulent land of Oz. Her showstopper was a reminder about the importance of being popular: “When someone needs a makeover / I simply have to take over.” The petite (4-foot 11-inch) Oklahoman counterbalanced Idina Menzel’s own theaterfilling voice. Generally men prefer the Wicked Witch type to the Glinda type. Chenoweth changed their minds.

Kristin Chenoweth Last fall, I was at a laundromat waiting forever for a sleeping bag to dry, and thus sort of forced to watch a Mar 25 daytime talk show. The hostess was grilling Chenoweth on 8pm, $50+ the details of her love life. I doubt if even Dolly Parton—to Bing Concert think about someone else from the country who pretty Hall, Stanford much everyone loves and admires—could have handled the rude interrogation with such ease. Straight but not narrow, a devout Christian while publicly supporting the cause of gay people, Chenoweth has been a sprightly presence on TV. She’s livened up Two and a Half Men, usually by strutting through the set in a swimsuit. That’s diverting, but it’s as a singer of aptly chosen material that she dazzles.

At Stanford Live’s Bing Fling! Chenoweth will sing to the accompaniment of pianist Michael Orland. Some of the material she’ll be performing is previewed on her album, prettily titled The Art of Elegance.

It’s a fresh approach to songs that, in some way, one would rather not see touched because of the way they so frequently get manhandled.

“Someone to Watch Over Me,” given too much masochism, can sound like “Someone to Walk Over Me.” Chenoweth handled it with freshness and opera-trained sustaining, in the crooning, pleading passages. Her rendition of “They Can’t Take That Away From Me” is slightly breathy, but Chenoweth finds the bounce in the song, and the arrangement includes electric guitar with a bit of dry blues to it.

It’s her cover of “A House is Not a Home” that nails it. The Bacharach/David song was written as the title for a little-seen Shelly Winters movie of the same name. Chenoweth approaches the song like someone understanding it for the first time, and it’s a joy to hear. —Richard von Busack

Crank Comedy MOOD SWINGS Woody Harrelson humanizes his character in ‘Wilson,’ which graphic novelist Daniel Clowes recently adapted for the screen.

N THE FIRST seven panels of his graphic novel Wilson, Daniel Clowes succinctly establishes the eponymous hero’s character. Wilson first exclaims to no one in particular, “I love people!” When a woman walks by, he engages her in conversation. As she begins to complain about her life, he interrupts her: “For the love of Christ, don’t you ever shut up?”

WIlson’s weak-kneed optimism doesn’t last an entire page. His misanthropy is barely tempered by the pale yellow and blue backgrounds that highlight his pot belly and receding hairline.

Words like “insufferable” and “crank”

come to mind after an initial reading.

As the drawn landscape changes from cheerful pastels to cheerless monotones, you continue turning the pages to find out what Wilson’s fate will be. He is engaging inside his cartoon world, but some kind of evolution had to take place in order to translate that abrasiveness into a feature length film. After adapting some of his previous works into screenplays (Ghost World and Art School Confidential), Clowes talked about the differences between the two mediums during a recent interview.

“The thing about a comic is it's very forgiving of a grim tone,” the Oaklandbased Clowes explains. “It's a comic, and you filter through that lens. You can be as brutal and grim as possible and it doesn't wear down on you. It has a lightness about it.” On a screen, he continues, “If that's an actual human being, with pores and ear hairs close-up,

that becomes awful and tragic in a way that, when it's just a circle with two dots, it's very different.”

The casting of Woody Harrelson as Wilson also changes the equation.

Clowes hadn’t thought of Harrelson as a Wilson at all: “He didn't even pop into my head. When they suggested him, all of a sudden I realized how that was going to make this character acceptable in a certain way. It's going to make him not unbearable, because he would bring his history of Woody Harrelson-ness to this, and you can't 100 percent hate him.”

Clowes is right. Beneath the caustic asides, Harrelson deploys a fine blend of goodness. He makes Wilson’s sense of isolation the bad thing, not Wilson himself.

The engine that drives the graphic novel is Wilson’s lack of a social life or belonging to a family or community.

He wants to change that soul-killing feeling but doesn’t know how. For much of the book, we aren’t reading Wilson’s thoughts. He’s speaking out loud to no one in particular, or, as is often the case, to anyone who passes by. Wilson has no sense of personal or conversational boundaries.

“Normally he'd be a character who's all thought balloons, or captions, but that didn't seem right,” Clowes says, reflecting on his approach to drawing Wilson. “I didn't want him to feel introspective, even though he is in a way. I wanted him to be all external. It only worked if it all comes out, and he's talking at the world. The only formal comparison I could think of is a soliloquy in a play.”

That had to be modified for the film.

In the screenplay, Clowes initially tried to have Wilson talking to himself and his dog. However, he notes, “that made him seem schizophrenic. It just made him seem mentally ill, and that undercuts the whole story, so I had to devise ways for him to always be speaking with other people. It also gave the opportunity to have all these new characters, and all these great actors have their little two minutes of speaking time.” Margo Martindale, Judy Greer and Mary Lynn Rajskub all make memorable cameos.

Wilson is not strictly autobiographical, but Clowes acknowledges that he feels “like a Wilson much of the time. I spend so much time just working in my studio, drawing, and talking to myself, talking to my dog. I feel very much trapped in that kind of world that he would be in. The minute I'm done with something I feel worthless. I just feel like, ‘Oh, what am I doing? I have no purpose in life.’”

Members of the Clowes Fan Club can rest easy though. After signing my copy of Wilson, the artist says he’ll be spending the afternoon working on the screenplay for Patience, his sci-fi magnum opus from last year. He may feel like Wilson between projects but, unlike the character he created, Clowes has found his calling.

“Drawing comics became a way I could feel at peace with myself, feel like I could process life through that filter, and it became part of me,” he says. “It was like learning a language.

When everything is in chaos, that's when I feel comfortable, when I'm in that room and in that space.”

T. C. Boyle’s early and hilarious novel adapted for potential miniseries by Terry Zwigoff (Ghost World, Crumb), making his first directing effort in more than a decade. 1983:Three desperate fools are hired on to tend a large marijuana patch in the Emerald Triangle: “It’s growing plants. How hard can it be?” says Phil (Joel David Moore) to his hapless former bartender pal Felix (Adam Rose). Long timers will watch Zwigoff’s recreation of San Francisco’s Mission District through a mist of nostalgic tears, with name-checks of Survival Research Labs,The Chatterbox, that strange Mission loiterer known as “Red Man”, and pork-nostril burrito joints in the era before they had engineers wielding electronic devices at every table.

Fans of Zwigoff’s Bad Santa will also be entranced by the details of deadbeat life: the mountainous dishwasher Gesh (Will Sasso)--the third of these stooges-helping himself to used sandwiches from the bus tray, or a hopeless 24th Street bar, where we glimpse a snarling Chihuahua attacking the green tennis ball on the drag end of an old day-drinker’s walker.

The hulking Sasso is a demigod of wrath (he already played Curly in the Farrelly Brothers’ Three Stooges); romance is provided by Natale Morales as a punk-era femme fatale called “Aorta.” Only the pilot is on line so far, but this is a story that demands to be continued. (Amazon Prime.) (RvB)

Revivals THE BROTHERS

(1947) David MacDonald's story of clan warfare on the Isle of Skye exhibits splendid locations, stimulating acting and a weirdly plausible story. The trouble arrives in 1900 in the form of Mary (Patricia Roc), an orphan from the city who had been hired out to work in the croft of the Macraes. They include the one-eyed old man Hector (Finlay Currie, the dourest Scot ever to wear a tam-o'-shanter) and his two sons, the homely John (Duncan Macrae) and the handsome, slightly soft-headed Fergus (Maxwell Reed). The family does a little whiskey smuggling. Mary quickly turns into to a bare-shouldered, bare-footed wild girl. She wrings a whimpering confession of love from John, but she seeks more ready, physical attention from the son of the Macraes' bitter rival.

Macdonald follows the island's rituals of dealing with strife to avoid blood feud: a ritual cursing session on the beach, followed by an exhausting contest of physical strength. The supporting cast includes Will Fyffe, a Scots music-hall legend, in his final film role as a hard-

sousing fisherman with an accordion.

Trying to bring true lovers together, he sets up the final tragedy by a heartfelt retelling of the legend of the selkie. As a 1947 film, The Brothers has its subtext about the postwar woman being urged to relinquish her powers: one episode of a Freudian maiming makes that clear.

The film echoes Michael Powell's love of nature and of women, brought together in a long-lensed nude swimming scene.

The Brothers is a movie that would enchant Guy Maddin, that student of the madness of the remotest, wildest land. Director MacDonald includes a few missteps: a burlesque bridebartering scene, a reaction shot from a shaggy highland calf, and a payoff that needed a huge barnacle goose, not the bitty seagull that flies in for the kill. These stumbles are redeemed by other evidence of care and taste: the soft dissolve from the hub of a spinning wheel to Mary's face and her late-night assignation with the black silhouette of a lover on a hill. Cedric Thorpe Davie's fine and full-throated soundtrack (orchestrated by Muir Mathieson, who conducted Vertigo) seems like the most turbulent music Bernard Herrmann never composed. CLUNY BROWN/ HEAVEN CAN WAIT

(1943/1946) British plumbing is no joke, but Ernst Lubitsch's swan song is a comedy on this topic. The film is a metaphor for changing times—a joke on those to whom class mobility was as distressing as a backed-up sink. The heroine (Jennifer Jones) is a warm-hearted orphan whose secret superpower is the ability to fix unenthusiastic English drains.

Through trifling circumstances, Cluny is forced into an engagement with a damp and disapproving pharmacist.

Richard Haydn—who had a graceful scene in Ball of Fire, cueing up “Sweet Genevieve”—plays the one drip Cluny can't fix; his reading of the line "I could relish a crumpet," is dialect comedy at its richest. Fortunately, the girl is rescued by an emigrant professor (Charles Boyer) who is working on a text on "Morality vs. Expediency"—Lubitsch's life-long theme. BILLED WITH Heaven Can Wait.

Lubitsch takes on the 1890s, a favorite era at 20th Century Fox during the worst years of WWII, in this handsome Technicolor comedy. His Excellency— Satan himself (Laird Cregar) pauses to hear the story of the love-life of a newly dead Manhattan man about town (Don Ameche). He loved his wife (Gene Tierney) after his own fashion. Having flirted with adultery—and maybe gone further, he expects damnation, but…

HAUNTED COUTURE In ‘Personal Shopper,’ Kristen Stewart plays a young woman dealing with an oppressive boss and a menacing specter.

Turn of the Screw VERY SEXY AND very scary, Personal Shopper is Oliver Assayas’ follow-up to Clouds of Sils Maria, the film that proved a sharp and sensitive director could find a virtue in Kristen Stewart’s air of neutrality.

Assayas makes a display of this actress’s humid eyes, firmly set mouth and smooth physique, but the ghost story isn’t all about her vulnerability—it follows a few sidebars about the parapsychological activities of Victor Hugo, for instance, to get us ready for the point when Assayas starts playing the xylophone on the viewer’s spinal cord.

Maureen Cartwright (Stewart) is a personal shopper for a very mean and extremely wealthy Parisienne. She carries on a frayed relationship via Skype with her boyfriend, who is working a long-term assignment in Muscat, Oman.

Maureen has an avocation—she’s a medium and spends a night searching for ghosts in an empty house. It’s the house where her twin brother, Lewis, died; her heart, like his, may be a time bomb ready to stop without warning. He’d always promised to send a message back to the world of the living. The film doesn’t cheat:

a ghost of swirling, smokelike ectoplasm reveals itself to Maureen early in the film.

Later, she gets texts from some mysterious, omniscient being. It knows her every move, telling Maureen, “I want you, and I will have you.”

There are three sound people Personal Shopper credited here, and you’ll see why. The R 105 Mins. soundscape goes Camera Cinemas beyond the eclectic mix of the score, including Marlene Dietrich’s “Das Hobbellied,” a song superficially about carpentry, but really about death as the great leveler of the world’s classes.

As in David Lynch, the disturbing sound is more chilling than the disturbing image.

The thump of a ghost answering questions has a wetness and echo to it, like the sound of rolling thunder diminishing. The dull, irritating buzz of a cellphone carrying threatening anonymous messages— perhaps from the hereafter—gives brand new punch to the old “the calls are coming from inside the house!” gimmick.

New Coke ENJOY Cliff Rawson revives Cola with avalanches of resonant sustain on new shoegazing EP.

On ‘Great Taste,’ SJ indie rockers Cola catch big psych wave

F

OR THOSE WHO only know local indie rock outfit Cola by their initial offering of songs—a small collection of ramshackle, Velvet Underground-tinged numbers released online—the band’s debut EP, Great Taste, is likely to sound like an entirely different project.

But then, those who are surprised

by Great Taste’s wall of swirling guitars, rumbling drums and long-

decaying squalls of psychedelic feedback probably didn’t spend their adolescence trading mixtapes with Cliff Rawson—or follow him to the Berklee School of Music in Boston, where he studied jazz guitar and jazz composition, or on to his days in punk and post hardcore bands in New York City.

In truth, as much as Cola’s frontman and principal songwriter was influenced by the bare-bones and bone-dry arrangements of The Velvets and The Stones, he also spent his formative years mesmerized by the fuzzy, sonic storms of shoegaze giants My Bloody Valentine, the angular assault of post punk pioneers Fugazi and the spiraling guitar lines

of so many emo and math rock noodlers. So, while Cola’s last set served as an homage to his heroes from New York’s bad old days, Rawson says Great Taste is much more within his wheelhouse.

“It certainly draws on the styles I’ve worked with in the past in other bands,” he says.

Great Taste’s six tracks—two of which are ambient compositions by noise guitar maestro Matt Davis—fly by. The EP’s brief running time is a bit disorienting, considering how dense each song feels. On that score credit goes to the pop songwriting prowess of Rawson and his coconspirator, lead guitarist Aaron Anaya, who contributes plenty of tasty licks to the EP. Then again, Rawson says the album wouldn’t be what it is if it weren’t for the space where he tracked it: a towering hall of wood and concrete in downtown San Jose, which he prefers not to name.

While he and Anaya bonded over their mutual appreciation of resonant reverb, he says the acoustic properties of the room where Great Taste was recorded sealed the deal.

When the drums and full force of the band first hit, about 30 seconds into EP-opener “Seven Flowers,” the room is palpable— and understanding the scale of the space where Rawson and Co. recorded only enhances the listening experience. It’s like hearing “When The Levee Breaks” for the first time after learning that Bonzo tracked his iconic drum part at the bottom of a massive stairwell of the centuries-old Headley Grange in Hampshire, England.

“When you hit a snare drum, it’s just fucking Valhalla!” he exclaims.

“That sound is kind of what dictated the direction into the more shoegazey style.” That, and having the freedom to experiment with sounds, which came with access to the space and his own recording gear. “It was just a huge luxury,” he says.

Rawson’s years of training and hardscrabble experience also paid dividends on the EP. He played drums on Great Taste—the first time he’s been behind a kit on tape in years.

“Song ideas would come to fruition without some of the hiccups that would come up when I was working with electronic drums or no drums or other drummers,” he says.

He also reckons he has hit a sweet spot between the analytical training he received at Berklee and the practical, journeyman’s know-how he picked up playing in rock bands.

“You get an education, but that can paralyze you,” he says, recalling how mathematical music felt when he first left school. “It takes a long time playing in bands and not making any money—you have to pay your dues.”

Cola celebrates Great Taste this Friday at a joint record release show with fellow San Jose indie rockers Mother’s Worry at The Ritz. The EP will be available on a collectible cassette, a CD with handmade art and as a digital download.

Fleck has performed with The Dave Matthews Band, Dolly Parton and Garth Brooks, and played on records by Sting, Phish and The Grateful Dead. He is also responsible for “The Imposter,” a Bela Fleck and concerto for banjo and orchestra, which he recorded with Abigail Washburn the Nashville Symphony.

But of the many talented musicians he’s shared the stage with, Fleck says no collaboration has been more satisfying than playing alongside his wife, Abigail Washburn. Her sophisticated, old-timey vocals and banjo chops beautifully compliment Fleck’s playing.

Fleck says working with his wife is much like collaborating with any musician in the sense that it takes time to find the groove. However, aside from the obvious chemistry they share, Fleck says working with Washburn is great because it keeps the family together on tour.

“When we finish something and we both really like it, then get to share it on stage and recordings—that’s an awesome feeling,” Fleck says.

Fleck’s interest in the banjo was initially kindled by the twangy compositions of Earl Scruggs and Lester Flatt, which he encountered while watching the iconic CBS sitcom The Beverly Hillbillies. “I never had the nerve to think I could actually play a banjo, but my grandfather got one for me and I fell headlong into its embrace,” Fleck says.

Fleck and Washburn are currently finishing up their second album together, which is slated for a fall release, and fans should expect to hear music from the forthcoming release when the pair play in Palo Alto on Thursday.

In addition to the as-yet-untitled album, Fleck recently began writing his third concerto, a project that will be commissioned by Louisiana Philharmonic to coincide with the tricentennial of New Orleans. He expects to write for banjo and quartet to go with it and possibly incorporate solo partitas, percussion ensemble and a wind ensemble. —Benjamin Siepak

Feeling my wife wasn’t reciprocating, I started fantasizing about being in a relationship with my co-worker, who also feels unappreciated by her spouse.

Confessing your crush to your married co-worker is like arranging a transfer to her—of your 26-pound tumor: “His name is Fred. He enjoys fine wine, banned preservatives, and cigarette smoke. I hope you’re very happy together!”

Your desire to tell isn’t noble or wonderful. In fact, it’s pretty much the psychological cousin of an intense need to pee. To get why that is, it helps to understand, as evolutionary psychologists John Tooby and Leda Cosmides explain, that the emotions driving our behavior today motivate us to behave in ways that would have given our ancestors the best shot at surviving, mating and passing on their genes. Unfortunately, solutions for recurring challenges in the ancestral environment aren’t always a perfect fit for the modern office environment.

Consider basic biological needs like food, water and sex. When we feel the urge to satisfy these—like when we’re hungry or hungry for a co-worker— our emotions kick into gear, pushing us into a motivated state of tension.

That’s an uncomfortable state to be in, so we look for the quickest, easiest way out—like “To hell with my job and my marriage!”—which conflates a powerful, evolved urge with a wise modern course of action.

Understanding this need to reduce emotional tension should help you realize that what’s driving your obsession is more mechanical than magical. But there’s another problem.

Our motivational system comes up a little short in the brakes department.

We have a “GO!” system to push us to do things, but we lack a comparable “STOP, YOU IDIOT!” system.

This makes inhibiting a feeling (and whatever course of action it’s pushing you toward) terribly hard and

uncomfortable work. And as social psychologists Daniel Wegner and James J. Gross have independently pointed out, doing this on a continuing basis can have damaging effects on your physical health.

Trying to quash some recurring thought also tends to backfire, making you think the unwanted thought more than if you hadn’t tried to stop. For example, in Wegner’s research, subjects told, “Try not to think of a white bear,” failed every time. Wegner suspects the mind sweeps around to see that we aren’t thinking of the thing—which means we’re thinking of the thing in the process. (Argh, huh?)

Considering all of this, when you’re looking to keep yourself from doing something, it helps to take the approach Aikido practitioners use. When a powerful blow is coming at them, instead of meeting it head on and taking the full force of it, they divert it—push it off in another direction.

Following this principle, your goal shouldn’t be stopping yourself from telling your co-worker but redirecting the energy you’ve been putting into your crush into your marriage.

Tell your wife you love her and discuss what might be missing in your marriage—for each of you. However, don’t do this by accusing her of failing to appreciate you (which will lead to defensiveness, not inspiration to change).

Instead, lead by example. Explain the ways you show your love for her (helping her connect the clean living room to the loving motivation behind it), and then tell her what would make you feel loved.

In case loving feelings have given way to hard feelings, there’s good news from a relatively new area of psychology called “embodied cognition,” or the finding that taking action leads to corresponding feelings.

So, it’s possible that acting loving can resuscitate the love you once felt.

Poet, translator Sholeh Wolpe gives epic Persian allegory new life

HOLEH WOLPE uses poetry to unite east and west. A few years ago, the Iranian-American poet and translator came to San Jose State University and gave a talk on Attar, the legendary Sufi mystic writer from whom Rumi acquired his entire shtick.

Attar's epic allegorical poem, The Conference of the Birds, had only been translated in a scholarly fashion, so Wolpe decided to translate a few passages into poetic English for her

presentation at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Main Library. The experience moved her so much that she later wound up pursuing and getting a contract to translate the entire book, which just came out from W.W. Norton. Wolpe returned to San Jose State last week as part of her book launch enterprise. Once again, San Jose serves as the backdrop for a mystical convergence of East and West.

The Conference of the Birds is a grand allegory about the journey of the soul and the annihilation of the ego. The story recounts a perilous journey undertaken by the world's birds, the mystics, led by another bird, the Hoopoe, who can be understood as a sage or messenger guiding the other birds toward the truth. The

journey unfolds in a series of cheeky yet profound lessons, given by the Hoopoe to the birds, followed by deceptively simple parables illustrating those lessons. The parables are funny and brash on the surface, but multiple layers of meaning emerge in almost every stanza. The path articulated is an interior voyage, with the birds learning to look for the essence within, rather than be “bamboozled by externals.”

In the end, the birds realize that they are part of the Great Beloved, not separate from it. The reader need not be religious, but whatever one's path, Attar says, if you remain still, you will dry up in your own puddle.

Regarding the translation, Wolpe realized that previous English translations were not exactly simple to follow, so she pored over different versions before using the one she felt was most accurate. She also assiduously consulted scholarly analyses, all to

ensure that she was providing a simple yet poetic translation rather than a verbose work of scholarship. The intense beauty and poetic nature of Attar's Persian is thus reimagined in contemporary English.

“The Persian language is a very flowery language,” Wolpe says. “It's beautiful, it’s very melodic and it’s very flowery. Translating it carelessly would result in a very flowery cliched work in English. That it why it is very important for the translator to be recreating the work in a fresh language. ... And that’s what I did, I used my poetic voice to make sure that the language itself is fresh.”

As a result, the book is easy to read, yet mind-blowing in its profundity. Any imaginative reader will immediately apply the parables to his or her own predicaments or even to national events. For example, the stories of the “self-satisfied bird,” driven by isolationist arrogance and devoid of wisdom, will clearly remind of egomaniacal politicians with inferiority complexes and their violent “me-first” advisers.

Another refreshing aspect of Wolpe’s translation is that all gender references are removed from the story, so we get “the Beloved” or “the Ocean” as opposed to any specific god or goddess verbiage. The Persian language does not contain “he” or “she” pronouns, but since previous translators were men, they translated everything as male or “he.” Not so with Wolpe’s translation.

Wolpe explains: “I didn't want to turn around and make everything ‘she,’ to say, ‘Oh, I’m a female translator.’ What I did, I took it out completely. I respected the Persian language and I said, ‘Well, God, the Beloved, the Almighty, there is no gender there.’ So I just used different names for the Beloved.”

Wolpe’s pursuits don't stop with Attar. She also recently helped translate Walt Whitman’s Song of Myself into Persian, soon to be released in Iran, now that the book finally passed the censor’s approval. In this columnist’s view, both of those geniuses—Attar and Whitman—provide insight into how we can improve the world by improving ourselves first.

“They’re both mystic poets,” Wolpe notes. “Whitman says, ‘I contain multitude.’ So you can see immediately, wow, that’s what Attar has been saying, in a different way.”

Then comes a place like Jack Holder’s Restaurant and Bar. Owned and operated by Jack and Anne Holder, owners of the local Holder’s Country Inn chain, the venture is their first full-fledged restaurant since opening the original breakfast spot 50 years ago.

Located off of Cambrian Avenue in San Jose, Jack Holder’s is a sleek and chic take on the classic mom-and-pop shop. A stylish marble top bar lines the back of the restaurant while dark wood-framed booth and tables—adorned with outlets and USB ports—fill the room. Geometric lights hang from the ceiling, adding to the contemporary aesthetic.

Jack Holder’s offers up some “Sunrise Cocktails” that range from a Classic Mimosa to micheladas. I opted for the Classic Mimosa ($8) while my friend took on the Brazilian Mimosa ($9)—a bubblier and tarter take on the standard.

Don’t be mistaken with the appearance of the place, they still dish out the same cozy and warm vibes that Holder’s Country Inn has been serving for generations. The menu is packed with many of the same classics from the Country Inn that generations have come to know and love. My friend and I ordered the Chorizo Scramble with a side of Blueberry Pancakes ($14) and the Bacon and Eggs combo with a side of Swedish Crepes ($12).

You could practically smell the aroma of the spicy chorizo whisking its way from the kitchen to our table. The jalapeño and pico de gallo added a vibrant tone and a crisp crunch to the eggs.

The scramble, served with a side of salsa and whopping portion of hash browns, packed a spicy kick.

The Blueberry Pancakes are sprinkled with powdered sugar and blueberries. The super fluffy and sweet cakes drove home the homestyle vibes, while the Swedish crepes served with a side of lingonberry butter provided a rich and fragrant contrast. Though the sweetness was borderline overbearing, the mimosas kept us cool.

The Holder family looks to add to their rich history in San Jose by taking it into the next generation. The restaurant provides a hip ambiance that is also well-suited for lunch and dinner—especially with 14 beers on tap.

OCATED IN THE thick of downtown Los Altos, Turn, a new addition to the dining scene, combines American comfort food with a farm-to-table and foodie twist on staples like burgers, pizza and steak. And then there are the cocktails.

Owned by lifelong Los Altos residents Jim and Julie Otis, who previously worked in the restaurant industry and technology marketing, respectively, opening Turn has been a longtime goal for the couple.

Their new venture hopes to be a welcoming eatery—and late night destination, by Los Altos’ standards—for locals to enjoy a meal or drink.

We began with drinks at Turn’s impressive bar, which takes up a majority of the central space inside the restaurant. I opted for the Member Berry Mule ($13), a unique take on the popular Moscow version.

Made with vodka elderberry, hibiscus, Rooibos tea, fresh lime juice, pink peppercorn and ginger beer, the drink was refreshing without being overly sweet or fruity. In addition to its extensive menu of handcrafted cocktails, Turn rotates craft beers and has nearly 35 different wines by the glass. Happy hour runs 3-5pm every weekday with drafts, select wines and specialty cocktails for only $5. Five huge flat-screen TVs allow patrons to enjoy the game from the bar or even while seated at a table.

For entrees, we opted for the lamb chops ($24), which came with a generous portion of mashed potatoes and green beans, and the eggplant parmesan ($19), a layered tower of eggplant discs breaded in panko crumbs and covered in spinach, basil and marinara sauce. While the lamb chops and green beans were seasoned and cooked expertly, the mashed potatoes underwhelmed. The eggplant parmesan was full of flavor and presented beautifully, but a thick layer of mozzarella cheese on top took away from some of that flavor potential. For good measure, we ordered the mushroom, ricotta and spinach pizza ($15) recommended by our server. The pie was packed with flavor and topped with a generous amount of mushrooms and spinach, all on a well-baked and chewy crust that wasn’t overly doughy.

For those looking to stay on the healthy side, Turn also has a decent salad menu, including a classic Caesar ($11) that comes tossed in housemade dressing, and a spinach and roasted corn salad ($9) that’s decorated with halved cherry tomatoes and slivered almonds, all mixed in a light and tangy vinaigrette. The simpler spinach salad stood out for its fresh and full-flavored toppings, and it balanced out our main dishes nicely.
