Breaking the ICE Rumors of federal deportation raids sweeping through San Jose last week had residents on edge, as city officials went scurrying on fruitless fact-finding missions. The rumors turned out to be just that, wasting precious city resources in the face of damaging storms. In an effort to get some clarity on what PRESIDENT TRUMP’s plan is for the 10th biggest city in the nation, San Jose Police Chief EDDIE GARCIA told Fly that he reached out to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials and they’ll meet Wednesday in their new Morgan Hill headquarters. Garcia said he’ll not only ask whether San Jose’s immigrant communities will be targeted, but also plans to tell ICE that the city has no intention of joining the 287(g) program being aggressively shopped They to local departments.

Garcia, who joined Mayor SAM LICCARDO in reassuring residents the city won’t assist in deportation efforts, added that SJPD is short-staffed but that’s not the point. “Even if I had 10,000 officers, we wouldn't be a part of the 287(g) program,” he said. While that may seem clear, direction from the highest levels of government remains disturbingly opaque. Earlier this month in Washington, D.C., San Jose’s top cop attended the Major Cities Chiefs conference, where he took part in a group discussion with Gen. JOHN F. KELLY, the new secretary of Homeland Security. Garcia said that even the secretary couldn’t provide a clear definition of what constitutes a “sanctuary city,” before telling the chiefs he doesn't want them “doing things that don't make sense for the community.”

Ironically, ICE’s new headquarters in Morgan Hill don’t make sense of that community, as the city noted that the facility is not permitted for detentions.

San Jose’s push to shed suburban rep faces substantial transit hurdles

N SOUTH SAN JOSE, on the same land where Alan Shugart led IBM’s development of the disk drive, nearly 3,000 densely packed apartments and condos sit next to a light rail station at Highway 85.

Less than 18 months ago, Urban Land, a magazine for the Urban Land Institute, glowingly touted the Cottle Transit Village as a model for future efforts to urbanize the intensely suburban, haphazardly developed postwar neighborhoods found in much of San Jose. Cottle Transit Village “is an ideal urban village that just needed to be completed,” Edward Storm,

board chair of Hunter Properties, told the magazine. “We knew that by completing this village we’d provide ridership for public transit, support for job retention, and then taxes and commercial support would follow.”

Today, however, planners acknowledge Cottle Transit Village is not living up to its name.

“We don’t really talk about it as an urban village, even though it’s shown as one on our maps,” says Michael Brilliot, San Jose’s division manager of citywide planning.

On the city’s long-term planning maps, Cottle Transit Village is one of 70 color-coded splotches designated as “urban villages,” and one of the first to be built out and occupied. But as city planners work to develop more urban villages, the development may be most valuable to future decisions if it’s seen as a lesson in unmet potential.

While Cottle has the requisite housing density, a nice park and some of the walkability of an urban village, Brilliot says, it lacks the vibrant commercial, office and entertainment spaces that might make it an exciting urban destination. Big box retailers like Target and Lowe’s dominate the space.

Restaurants are more of the Panera Bread variety; there’s even—shudder—an Applebee’s to come. With no nightlife and no developed office space, Cottle Transit Village neither thrives as a transit hub nor as a village worth celebrating.

Despite thousands of new homes in the area, light rail ridership from the Cottle station is actually down about 5 percent from two years ago, according to the Valley Transportation Authority (VTA). Ron Golem, VTA’s deputy director of real estate and joint development, acknowledges that riders face some baked-in obstacles. The biggest one: Highway 85.

An elevated walkway drops riders in between the north and southbound lanes of the freeway, making for a significantly longer trek than the quarter-mile planners consider ideal.

Connect Forward BART service arrives in North San Jose this fall, and VTA is preparing to hike fares and change schedules to closely integrate what is today the least efficient local transit system in the nation, according to farebox recovery rates, in which tickets cover a paltry 12 percent of the cost. Not too far down the tracks, regional transit officials hope, high-speed rail will connect the Bay Area to San Francisco, Southern California and stations in between.

Despite these efforts, turning trafficchoked San Jose, the nation’s 10th largest city, into a walkable, bikeable and mass transit-oriented landscape is a monumental challenge, according to urban development experts.

“No question, it’s incredibly ambitious,” says Yonn Dierwechter, a professor of urban studies at the University of Washington-Tacoma.

“But if it’s not going to happen in your area, it probably isn’t going to happen anywhere.”

San Jose residents, who for decades have reliably voted for transit funding, are increasingly unhappy with the extended commutes and a lacking sense of community, according to a city survey released last year. Both are issues that “new urbanism” seeks to address, but it’s not clear if disappointed residents fully understand their suburban homes

contribute to the city’s choked roadways and low morale.

“For such a thing to work, it takes a lot of alignment, and it has to be done unflinchingly,” says Dan Trudeau, a professor of urban design at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota. It requires sustained adherence to zoning and design codes and the backing of major employers, utilities and the media, he adds. “People need to be aware that the system is broken, and then you’ll see the willingness to be led.”

Voters got on board in November, when they approved Measure B, a $6.3 billion countywide transportation plan.

While the impact of Measure B is still to come, parts of San Jose are starting to show a little hard-won but tenuous urban zest, such as the South of First Area, The Alameda and North San Jose.

Mayor Sam Liccardo has aggressively pursued more high-rise housing downtown within walking distance of transit hubs, restaurants, art galleries, retail, nightlife and essential services. The city has incentivized both commercial and residential development through breaks on taxes and fees related to new construction and tenant improvements in high-rise buildings. The City Council has gone along with Liccardo in saying the pump must be primed.

Kirk Vartan, co-chair of the Stevens Creek Advisory Group, a city-sanctioned committee created by Councilman Chappie Jones, gives credit to those trying to tackle the gridlock, noting that urban villages are a huge part of the equation. But, Vartan says, in planning for the massive overhaul of the Tri-Village area—the area around Santana Row, Winchester Boulevard and Stevens Creek Boulevard—the process has fallen frustratingly short.

“The reality is we’ve spent our time creating capacity studies for the area and talking about streetscape improvements,” Vartan said. “It’s window dressing as opposed to creating a vision of what we want the area to look like. What is the character or the feel, what are we trying to create and achieve over the next 20 or 25 years?’’

Vartan suggests San Jose should contract with a world-class consultant up front—as Santa Clara has done—to help neighborhoods create a vision, rather than getting the public involved only after developers have made their plans and environmental studies have been conducted. This would help avoid the extended delays and millions spent on redesign and litigation.

“Whenever pedestrians or bicycles have to cross an onramp to get to the station, it’s always a little bit of a hazard situation,” Golem says. “We need to think about how to enhance people’s feeling that it’s safe.”

VTA officials also accuse Cottle developers of ineffectively marketing the station—which developers deny—but transit planners prefer to talk about River Oaks on the opposite side of town.

The newer, more successful mixed-use development sits on North First Street.

Here, Golem says, developers successfully pitched light rail access to potential tenants. Residents don’t face the same access issues, and ridership has grown 20 percent in two years.

City planners admit that their efforts to turn San Jose, a sprawling, profoundly suburban landscape into a vibrant, interconnected system of urban villages that make a car optional, rather than a necessity, will require a couple of decades to complete. But there remain questions on how soon the essential pieces will fall into place.

ROM GEORGE LUCAS’ pioneering special effects studio, Industrial Light & Magic, to Steve Jobs’ wild personal gamble, Pixar, the Bay Area has long been home to powerhouses in movie and TV production. But for all the incredible work done in the region, Los Angeles has remained the film capital of the world—while Silicon Valley has served only as a consultancy outpost for the big Hollywood studios.

That is poised to change as more filmmakers adopt virtual reality and augmented reality technologies to tell stories, according to Halfdan Hussey, CEO and co-founder of Cinequest, which this year is expanding its mission statement and rebranding itself as the Cinequest Film & VR Festival.

The 27th annual festival has long been a champion of cutting-edge cinematic advancements. In past years, the festival has showcased digital film technology, online movie distribution and new formats like the Barco Escape three-screen theater projection format. Now Hussey says it is time to bring VR into the fold.

“This is Silicon Valley,” he says. “It’s the epicenter of VR. I feel like we must be a VR festival.”

Also, Hussey adds, the timing is right.

With a number of local companies building VR technologies—from specialized omnidirectional cameras to software that helps stitch together VR video into a cohesive whole—there is a growing amount of quality VR content originating right here in Santa Clara County.

“It’s really a fantastic time for us to get into the VR space,” Hussey says, noting that the technology is still young, but that enough quality work now exists that he and his team felt that both consumers and filmmakers would be interested in learning more about the nascent format. “Now you’re seeing movies and VR experiences that really run the gamut.”

Short horror films and brief documentary clips are among the best

productions in the virtual reality space thus far, Hussey says. “You can get so much empathy in VR,” he explains of the format’s potential in documentary filmmaking. “It’s one thing to talk about people who are in a little town in Africa and see pictures, but to actually feel like you’re there with them is something else entirely.” And of course, the power of a well-executed thriller is made ever more intense if the viewer feels that he or she is in mortal danger.

For those interested in seeing what is currently being done in the VR space, there’s the Virtual Reality Canteen + Gallery, where the curious can view titles like Alter Ego, Fantastic Beasts and Burlap. There is also a slate of Virtual Reality Cinema Programs.

The technology behind animated

virtual reality films appear to have a significant advantage at this stage in the VR race for supremacy.

Asteroids! is part of the VR Cinema Program 1. It’s the second film from Baobab Studios, which was co-founded by writer/director Eric Darnell (Antz, Madagascar). This three-minute animated short is set inside a spaceship with primary colored aliens, robots and control panels. As you watch the aliens move about their capsule, you do feel like a passenger strapped in for the ride.

Very little happens though, and while the aliens speak, they don’t speak in English and aren’t subtitled.

In a cartoon like this, it’s not clear what the advantage of working in VR is at this point in time. In an email, a

publicist from Baobab Studios wrote this response to that question: “VR allows you to draw the viewer into the movie on more of an emotional level, creating empathy and even compassion for the characters.” If there isn’t much of a story to tell, this statement is cause for debate. In this regard, VR Cinema Program 5 offers something more emotionally stirring than a videogame template.

Collisions is a five-minute short about an indigenous tribe in the Australian desert. VR provides a disorienting effect in films like this one.

Don one of the headsets and you’re suddenly transported to another hemisphere. The camera opens up the field of space and moves toward the people standing on the reddened

earth. Visually, you’re walking with the cinematographer but your actual body is sitting still. For gamers and other viewers who regularly immerse themselves in VR, the adjustment to the new reality may be easier. For those new to the medium, the transition can be dizzying.

Hussey acknowledges there is a long way to go—in part because so few have been trained in using virtual reality technology and because those who are well versed are inventing a brand new set of storytelling conventions as they go. What are the cues that tell a viewer to turn around, look up or look down? Can a romantic comedy work as a VR experience; if so, how? And how do you ensure the sound is realistic

enough that it doesn’t take the viewer out of the experience?

These are all questions that speakers will attempt to answer in a series of workshops— including seminars on “Cinematic VR” and “Sound Design.”

Hussey believes that the tipping point for VR adoption is about a year away: “They're starting to get enough headsets out there, but will audiences have enough quality experience that they're really going to be happy in VR?” His answer as of today is a definite maybe: “We certainly have an abundance at Cinequest, but

that has to grow say 10-fold for the consumer to be able to have enough to see and experience in their homes to really make this industry fly.”

(1926) Leo von Harden (John Gilbert), a young Austrian soldier from before the First World War, has a fatal attraction for a married woman rejoicing in the name Felicitas von Rhaden (Greta Garbo).

Caught in flagrante by the lady’s husband, Leo fights a duel and kills the husband…the upshot is that he’s stationed in Africa for five years until the scandal clears. Watching the bereaved lady, adjusting her widow’s veil in the mirror for maximum prettiness, tells us she’ll be disinclined to pass the years in solitude. Quite old-fashioned, this

movie, but it was the first teaming of Gilbert and Garbo, which became a fatal attraction in its own right. And when director Clarence Brown rounds up the couple in a clinch, the nine decades since this was made cease to exist. In an interview with historian Kenneth Brownlow, Brown said, “Tempo is one of the most elusive things, but when you get it right there’s nothing better.” Brown takes his time with the lovers meeting (“Who…are…you?”

“Does it matter?”), lingering as they share the flare of a matchstick. When the smoke clears they’re lolling on a day bed, exalted by William Daniels’ photography. As for the mystery of his female star—so impertinent yet so remote—Brown

A True Maverick: Jane Lynch DEADPAN MA’AM Jane Lynch had already made a career out of a hilarious, dryas-toast delivery before she was picked up by ‘Glee’ and Judd Apatow.

A

S A LESBIAN ICON and as a sturdy supporting player in the Christopher Guest mob, Jane Lynch was a favorite, even before she found fame on six seasons of TV’s Glee, as the meanie cheerleading coach at William McKinley High.

Gal pals, stern nurses, and martinets, Lynch excels at them all. The lanky Illinois-raised actress was made for sensible-shoes parts. Physically somewhere between Cloris Leachman and Eve Arden, Lynch excels as angular WASPs—with a stinger—in several of Guest’s comedies. She is essential to the most thrilling comic ensemble since Preston Sturges died.

In 2003’s A Mighty Wind, Lynch shone as the white-witchcraft member The New Main Street Singers. This was Guest’s cruelly accurate recall of The Great Folk Music Scare of the early 1960s. It spared not a single kernel of the corn-on-the-cob musical celebrations of the working class by people who were, plainly, not of it.

Among this cast of musicians getting a last curtain call was Lynch’s ex-smut star Laurie Bohner, a Midwestern runaway from a town peopled with “pure, unadulterated white trash.” She’d been born again as a member of a sub-Wiccan cult worshipping “the awesome and vibratory power of color…We don’t ride around on broomsticks or wear pointy hats.” Inevitably, in the next shot, Laurie is wearing Hogwarts headgear.

“Well, we don’t ride broomsticks.”

In Guests’ 2000 Best of Show, Lynch was the poodle trainer with a fancy for the head poodle in charge: Sherri Ann Cabot (Jennifer Coolidge, who was the avatar of the expression

“MILF” in her performance in American Pie). Coolidge’s character was based on the voluptuous starlet Anna Nicole Smith, whose May/Jurassic Era marriage to a nonagenarian zillionaire was cause for much chortling at the time. Named (again, with the suggestions of former porn star-ism) “Christy Cummings,” Lynch puts the make on her female employer.

Lynch is still collaborating with her old gang. Last year she and Harry Shearer recorded “Too Many Notes” as a holiday single. The tune is about the excessive la-la-la (“It’s like a vocal exercisssseeeahiiiisssee”) of melisma-chewing R&B stars—something that makes you want to spend Christmas in Saudi Arabia.

Coming to Cinequest to receive the Maverick Spirit Award, Lynch is escorting her new comedy Writer’s Block, directed by Flight of the Conchords’ vet Troy Miller. In it Lynch is a songwriter hamstrung by the thought that she’s outdated. Lynch has little fear of that; with her chops, she’ll never go out of style. —Richard von Busack

OVERACHIEVEMENT BLUES ‘The Valley’ explores the very real problem of young adults who feel suffocated by academic expectations.

Under Pressure

T

HE TYPICAL first-time Silicon Valley director is a young person just out of the filmmaking program at De Anza, San Jose State University or Stanford. Saila Kariat, the woman behind The Valley is different. After a career in electrical engineering, and a second career in the home construction business, Kariat went back to school to learn to make movies.

She describes the plot of her feature film, debuting at this year’s Cinequest.

“It’s about an Indian-American entrepreneur with two daughters and a stay-at-home wife. A successful guy.

Externally, everything’s all right for him. And then his daughter, a firstyear college student, commits suicide.

First, he absorbs it, and then he finds out what happened. He talks to her to her fellow students, he learns a lot about himself and his values.

“Thematically it’s about the pressure that kids are undergoing, especially if they’re the children of immigrants, which often exacerbates the situation.

In the valley, there’s a lot of pressure for success, for titles and fancy cars, and this creates a lot of anxiety for the kids.

“I saw Madeline Levine at a reading from her book The Price of Privilege.

She’s had a therapy practice in Marin for 20 years. The first thing that she said was that it used to be easy to spot

the children with severe depression— they’d look disheveled. They weren’t taking care of their hygiene. Now she’s getting severe depression patients who are very polished on the outside, very composed.”

Kariat grew up in three different places, the U.S., Canada and India— she has a spot of Canadian accent left. She worked at the IBM Watson research center and a startup before going into the spec home building business. Her aim in changing jobs was to spend more time with her two daughters.

Kariat says that The Valley stems from “my experiences and my observations of people around me.” She’s had personal contact with the kind of despair that leads to breakdowns; her brother suffered from mental health issues.

“It’s a stigma in every culture, but it’s particularly bad in Asian cultures. A lot of kids hide it and that makes it worse.”

Beth Toni Kruvant (Heart of Stone) observes the situation of some 50,000 to 60,000 refugees who have sought safety in the south Tel Aviv district of Hatikva; new arrivals congregate in the neighborhood’s Levinsky Park. Mostly Christians from Eritrea, they cross the Sinai escaping lifetime conscription in their nation’s army. The new arrivals are referred to as “infiltrators” by bigots; a mob screaming “back to Africa” carries out a sort of Kristallnacht of broken windows on the Africans’ internet cafes and shops. The trouble is egged on by reactionary Knesset MPs such as Miri Regev, who refers to the refugees as “a cancer in our body”— one other old parliamentary rumbler is also seen here describing them as granny-rapers. In one case, deportation fed three asylum seekers straight to ISIS, who executed them. Interviewees include the activist Mutasim Ali, who was interned by the Israeli government, sympathizers who march in the snow in Jerusalem, and old neighborhood people who have mixed feelings about the new arrivals. January 1983: at a public school in communist Czechoslovakia, in an affluent suburb of Bratislava, we’re shown before and afters of a classroom session where the kids are being asked what their parents do for a living.

Director Jan Hrebejk flashes to the aftermath, where administrators meet with parents. All present having the air of the mice in the story who gather to decide who will bell the cat. In corduroy and dung-colored pleather coats, these angry parents discuss causes leading to the removal of the teacher Mrs. Drazdechova (Zuzanna Maurery), a politically connected widow who extorts favors from her students and their parents. After Cinequest, Kariat may be doing her own distribution. She’s been accepted to the Los Angeles Women’s International Film Festival in late March. “I hope it’ll give the movie a good bump,” she says, adding that she plans to sell to the Asian and Middle Eastern markets. Theatrical exposure in the age of downloads draws attention to a film, but 65 percent of the money comes from video on demand, and that percentage is even higher when you’re dealing with an independent film.

She says her decision to get a film degree is something she would have done when she was young—“if it had been approved-of back then. The Valley is the culmination of a lifelong dream. And I hope it does some good.” —Richard von Busack

At SJSU, she learned scriptwriting and the fundamentals of filmmaking under Scott Sublett. She was already a serious film fan before she went back to school, mentioning Sidney Lumet, Mike Nichols and Satyajit Ray as favorites. I never encounter enough filmmakers who love Ray, the Bengali master responsible for such inarguably feminist films as Devi and The Big City. One of the things Kariat seeks in a film is a balance of talk and action.

Casablanca exemplifies that balance, in her view: “They can just stare at each other, or they can talk, and it’s fascinating either way.”

The three-week long shoot in spring 2015 took place in various valley cities and on the peninsula coast. Locations included a quick three hour set up at Saratoga’s The Plumed Horse. Kariat’s secret as a novice director was working hard on the casting. “Not to beat my own drum, but this movie stands or falls because of the actors. If you can’t find the right actors, it’ll all look like a soap opera,” she said.

She used a casting agent in India, who brought her a pair of Pakistani actors, Alyy Khan (A Mighty Heart) and Samina Peerzada, the actress playing the housekeeper. She then sought out a Los Angeles agency that casts Indian

BAD DOCTOR In ‘The Assignment,’ Sigourney Weaver plays a surgeon who performs a forced sex-change operation in an act of revenge.

H

IT MAN FRANKIE Kitchen (Michelle Rodriguez) undergoes the ultimate femme-dom experience: he’s captured and involuntarily sex-changed by a vengeance-seeking mad doctor (Sigourney Weaver, excellent). Now a good-looking gunwoman with a pair of .45 automatics, she seeks payback against a gangster (Anthony LaPaglia) who set her up. The Assignment’s director, the eminent Walter Hill of (48 Hours, and much more), shot it for what his producer termed a “responsible price”—“it became more responsible as the shoot went on.” The wet streets of Vancouver pose as the low-rent parts of San Francisco.

Hill knows how to make a thugs-vs.-trigger man film like few directors alive, as evidenced by his last movie, Bullet to the Head. But the controversial part of this fun winter’s tale should be obvious.

“The movie’s been attacked by quite a lot of people who haven’t seen it,” Hill says when reached by phone. “It’s a very lurid film. I was trying to do something like the episodes I did for TV’s Tales from the Crypt… I mean, a nasty little

story. It has nothing to do with the transgendered. There are people who have a mental predisposition to change their sex. Frank Kitchen certainly does not have a predisposition—nor is he altered inside his head. He stays a guy with a guy’s attitude.”

Hill breaks this movie up into comic book frames—recalling the original framing concept he used in his seminal The Warriors (1979), and which Ang Lee used in The Hulk

(2003). “When people say ‘comic book movie’ they usually mean something stupid,” Hills says. “But it’s an unusually liberating kind of genre— you can tell stories in shorthand and cut to the chase. It’s a genre in which not everybody has to be nice.”

The Assignment features the best performance any director has got from Michelle Rodriguez. “One of the first things Sigourney said after she saw it was to exclaim how good Michelle was.

I believed in Michelle from the moment I saw her. You can’t do a movie that’s about a human body without confronting the material and being exhibitionistic. It took a lot of courage.

She’s a brave girl, a brave actor. “ In Hill’s cult classic, The Warriors, a cohort of nine from a Coney Island gang must traverse New York—from the Bronx to their home turf in Brooklyn’s Coney Island— during an epically long night. The phantasmagorical thugs they encounter, including the horrifying Baseball Furies, put this opus right on the edge of science fiction. Yet The Warriors is based on a very early history of war,

Xenophon’s Anabasis. The style of this wild and rousing film anticipates every superhero movie to be made in the following years. It’s the first movie really made in Gotham City. The Warriors’ vistas of greasy iron and neon scribbles of graffiti were captured in New York City during some very unpacified times.

The shoot wasn’t too troubled, however.

“We had resistance from real gangs, especially in Brooklyn,” Hill says.

“They could never get an idea this was a movie. At times, they threw rocks. Up on the elevated subway tracks, they’d urinate down at the actors. The police were great with us—they did the best they could.”

Talk of remaking The Warriors has gone on for years. “I did my version,” Hill said, without resentment.

“Nobody wants to make a period movie out of it. It was a slightly futuristic fantasy. The movie has hung on so well with the hip-hop crowd, they talk about tying it into the more modern music scene.

At the time, it was a very big deal that one gang member had a gun. Jesus, nowadays The Warriors they have submachine guns, it’s sad to say.”

Now in his mid-70s, Hill has a chance to consider his career. He doesn’t mind being called a “neonoir” director. “I prefer action director. ‘Action director’ used to be demeaning. As opposed to a dramatic director, the action guys were on the back porch. But I liked the company you kept. I don’t work much anymore. I’m an old guy, but I like to keep my hand in. I did studio films, and tried to make a second or third movie that was kind of smaller… personal. Some of those never found an audience. I don’t rewatch them.

Once I’m done with them, I’m done.

As Truffaut said, films are never finished, they’re always abandoned.

ONE IN A BILLION India is home to an estimated 1.3 billion people. ‘India In A Day’ presents a slice of life on the subcontinent.

ALK ABOUT A cast of thousands. The crowdsourced India in a Day, which debuts at this year’s Cinequest, presents a massive group portrait of India. The project, which Google hatched with executive producer Ridley Scott and his Scott Free Productions, features cobbled-together footage collected by amateurs with cellphones and handheld cameras.

Canadian director Richie Mehta and his editing team cut and wove the footage down to a manageable 86 minutes. Still, the film is sprawling in scope—providing a mosaic view of some of the billion-plus lives in India, and fifteen of the languages spoken on the subcontinent.

Phoned from London where he was travelling, Mehta (Amal, Siddhartha, both of which screened at previous Cinequest film fests), described how he’d been called up by Scott Free. “It sounded like a dream project for me, since I was experienced in South Asian material,” Mehta says. “They asked me if it interested me. At least I

didn’t tell them that I wanted to do it so badly, I’d do it for free.”

The footage was all taken during one day—Oct. 10, 2015—from midnight to midnight. “That was pretty much the only rule,” Mehta says. “It was a very basic guideline— you discuss evolving India. If you needed more time to explore the topic, we’d try to pass on some

inspiration. We’d say, ‘try to shoot something that regularly occurs in your day. Tell us about what you love or fear.’”

Submissions came from all parts of India, from the hills to the Nicobar Islands. Only one remote state on the Burmese border didn’t submit. Two videographers submitted “giant epics,” according to Mehta.

One person submitted 15 hours of footage—the story of a farming family. “It could have been a feature documentary,” Mehta says. “Another group of filmmakers studied a rickshaw driver: four cameras and six hours of films. At the other extreme, one person sent a film that was 5 seconds long, of a man riding a horse in downtown Kolkata.”

Mehta’s team, along with his editor, Beverly Mills, delved through all of the material. “The staff rated it every week, and then re-evaluated their rating system,” Mehta says. “We wanted to make sure that before disqualifying something for technical reasons—for poor sound or images—that (there wasn’t)

something worthwhile there, as opposed to content that was technically perfect and didn’t say anything.

Everything that I wanted to really, really get into this film made it. The farming family I mentioned were very special. WASHED OUT Floods forced emergency evacuations throughout the South Bay.

San Jose Floods Prompt Emergency Rescues, Evacuations After days of storms dumped record rainfall throughout Northern California, the Anderson Reservoir filled to the brim Monday and sent water roaring down the concrete spillway and into Coyote Creek. The rising waters prompted daring rescues and forced residents, homeless people and office buildings to evacuate in parts of the South Bay. San Jose declared a “local emergency” Tuesday as Coyote Creek surged and flooded entire neighborhoods, stretches of freeway, homeless camps and Happy Hollow Zoo. More than 100 people who live around Senter Road and Phelan Avenue had to leave their homes after the muddy waters submerged their cars and rose halfway up their front doors. Rescue boats went from house to house in the Nordale community, picking up people who were trapped in their homes. By late Tuesday, Coyote Creek had begun to flood houses throughout downtown along William and Santa Clara streets.

San Jose police also evacuated the South San Jose offices of more than 300 county employefromes for CalWORKS and In-Home Support Services after the space took on.

Overflow from the Guadalupe River temporarily flooded a parking garage Monday night at San Jose’s airport.

San Jose, home to one of the nation’s largest populations of unsheltered homeless people, dispatched rescue teams on boats and a helicopter to creekside homeless camps overwhelmed by the swollen waterways. Firefighters rescued several homeless people stranded along Coyote Creek near the Los Lagos Golf Course on Tuesday morning, as dozens of other people climbed trees and scrambled up the riverbanks to escape the rushing waters.

Outreach workers have been visiting homeless encampments throughout San Jose to spread word about the floods and where people can find emergency shelter—at James Lick High School, 57 N. White Road. San Jose is also running temporary evacuation shelters at the Roosevelt, Shirakawa and Mayfair community centers.

The Santa Clara County Office of Supportive Housing declared an inclement weather episode, which means an additional 292 shelters beds will be made available through Saturday morning. The American Red Cross put out a call for volunteers who want to help relocate people throughout the city. The nonprofit’s South Bay office is located at 2731 N. First St., San Jose. GOOD NEWS? A new report reaffirms past analysis showing that race does play a role in how police respond during traffic stops.

SJPD Finds Silver Lining in Report on Racial Disparities Black drivers in San Jose are about one-and-a-half times more likely than whites to be pulled over by police for a traffic stop, nine times as likely to get a field interview and twice as likely to get a criminal citation, according to a new report from the University of Texas-El Paso’s Center for Law and Human Behavior.

The study, conducted for the San Jose Police Department, confirmed prior analysis showing that racial minorities are more likely to get stopped, searched and cited than their white counterparts.

Looking at more than 83,000 reports from 2013 to 2016, researchers found that police ordered black motorists to sit on a street curb at three times the rate of whites.

Latinos were more than three times as likely as white drivers to get a field interview and, like black motorists, more than twice as likely to get cited. Despite that, black and Latino drivers, like Asians, were less likely than white people to be caught carrying contraband.

Still, the Police Department said Friday that the analysis showed fewer racial disparities than expected. Black pedestrians, for example, were stopped less often than whites, according to the report, and black and white pedestrians saw a similar rate of arrest.

“The good news is SJPD is not a department in crisis,” Chief Eddie Garcia said in a prepared statement.

FRESH KICKS The San Jose-born graffiti artist Samuel Rodriguez has designed a new shoe for Puma.

Street Art to Street Wear WHEN HE WAS just 12 years old, Samuel Rodriguez would routinely lace up his leather Puma Clyde basketball shoes at the stroke of midnight and leave his home on the East Side of San Jose to venture out plastering freeway bridges, buses and walls with his self-taught graffiti skills.

“I was in a bubble,” Rodriguez says. “Taking the bus, all I saw was tagging and everything revolved around that.”

Today, you can find 36-year-old Rodriguez working professionally on his craft in his friend’s back-house-turned-studio in San Jose. The minimalistic cement wall rooms are decked with his Aztec-inspired prints and portraits of ethnic faces veiled with graffiti.

His family has been in San Jose since it was part of Mexico. Rodriguez says he’s inspired by the diverse culture within his hometown. “A lot of times it’s not art that influences your art,” Rodriguez says. “It’s other people, what you’ve learned that day, fashion … sometimes you don’t know that, but stuff starts emerging on your page.”

In 2014, Rodriguez illustrated a limited-edition shoebox for an exclusive release of all metallic gold Puma Clydes, which were inspired and named after New York Knicks point guard Walt Frazier (1967-77). Rodriguez created a modern and galactic homage to Frazier—the first athlete paid to wear a basketball sneaker.

This year, Rodriguez has gotten the chance to design the very same shoes he wore as a young boy. With a detailed sketching of the Puma Clyde set, the Latino-inspired sneakers are set to be released May 5.

Rodriguez studied his craft at De Anza College and the California College of Arts. After graduating he worked for a design firm and took time to design bikes with a close friend before he dived back into the art world by taking a trip to showcase work in Japan in 2011.

Over the past few years Rodriguez has created art for Samsung, LinkedIn and Google. Last year, Rodriguez partnered with Under Armour to design apparel to go along with Stephen Curry’s shoes, the Curry 3.

Rodriguez has a passion for giving back to the San Jose community that raised him. Raoul Peck’s tremendous documentary I Am Not Your Negro shows great intelligence and relevance. Rather than a rehash of the 1960s struggle, it’s a demonstration that the struggle never ended. The subject is James Baldwin, and an unfinished manuscript. Baldwin never got further than 30 pages into his study of three lives in the civil rights movement. All three of the leaders were under the age of 40 when they were martyred: Martin Luther King Jr., Medgar Evers and Malcolm X. Peck’s smooth time shifts contrast 1960s beatings on the protest line to the uprisings in Ferguson, Missouri. Black martyrs are juxtaposed with photos of dead kids killed by incompetent or malicious cops. A few facts turn up missing, probably because of the muscular brevity of Peck’s film. A small excerpt from Baldwin’s 1,800page FBI file includes rumors of Baldwin’s homosexuality. If you knew nothing about Baldwin, you might assume this was a slur by J. Edgar Hoover’s secret police force, instead of the truth: Baldwin published a gay themed novel very early, in 1956. Still, this movie is an education based on the experiences of a man who learned the hard way. As Baldwin said, speaking to whites on the behalf of black people everywhere: “I know more about you than you know about me.” (Valleywide.) (RvB)

Saroo Brierley’s true story of a childhood nightmare resolved with the sturdy help of Google Earth— and there is truth to the comment that the film is sort of a commercial for the search engine. Garth Davis directs this story of a rural Indian boy (played in youth by Sunny Pawar) who fell asleep as a stowaway on a train. The boy ended up a thousand miles away in Kolkata. He was a nonBengali speaker in a city already full of street kids, and the name of the town he lived in drew a blank with the local authorities. Adopted by a couple from coastal Tasmania, Saroo grew up in affluence…still plagued by the thought of the family he left behind. Davis, primarily an Australian television director, seems to keep a loose hand on the actors, giving them room. As the adult Saroo, the steadily rising Dev Patel holds the screen with ease. Commonly a pair of icebergs in the movies, Rooney Mara (as Brierley’s girlfriend in Melbourne) and Nicole Kidman (the adoptive mom) are unusually warm and touching. Kidman is at first the

perfect kind of mom, who always knows how to say the right thing, but in one scene she reveals her own past and a William Blake-like vision she had when she was a child, and the performance is complete: it’s like a trap door opening to reveal the mysteriousness of motherhood. Greig Fraser’s landscapes of Brierley’s two worlds are extremely handsome. One feels the remarkable story has been tarted up a little—there was enough Dickens in it already, before the scenes of how the boy Saroo narrowly evades being pimped out. Still, it’s an impressive tale that’ll get the mothers in the audience right in the brisket.

THE FOUNDER

Director John Lee Hancock has gone from Davy Crockett (in his The Alamo) to a greasier kind of pioneer. The Founder is the offagain, off-again-again story of Ray Kroc. He was the burger baron who franchised McDonald’s from the original owners, a pair of idealistic restaurateurs from San Bernardino.

The McDonalds are played by John Carroll Lynch and Nick Offerton, the latter who naturally has the most authentic 1950s face and style in this period piece. Exuding gall and desperation, Michael Keaton plays Kroc with a Midwestern honk to his voice and a never-ending line of patter. Watching him get a series of doors slammed in his face, and seeing him taking solace with a hip flask, it’s like Beetlejuice died and went to hell. Keaton’s helmet-like forehead and barely repressed snarl suggests a deeper conception of Kroc’s climb than the movie allows.

We’re supposed to grudgingly admire the nerve of the blinkered man, with his devotion to homilies.

A squandered Laura Dern is Kroc’s first wife, left alone all night while her husband works his territory. An actor can be so much better than their role that all their effort only serves to reveal the thinness of the script. It’s a symphony of false notes, with very little atmosphere of the times. The Founder sells itself on Kroc’s patter about how America needed golden arches—the wishy-washy conception of this business giant makes it look as if McDonald’s corporate headquarters had approved every scene in the script. Given the tepid material, it’s odd how choice the Carter Burwell/ Penguin Café Orchestra soundtrack is. Despite the music, those who have a bit of PTSD about the time they spent toiling at McDonald’s may not be sold on the ingenuity and persistence of this credit-grabbing hustler. (Camera Cinemas.) NOT KIDDING AROUND ‘The Lego Batman Movie’ isn’t just for kids.

There are plenty of in-gags for the grown-ups, too.

Batman’s Big Day Out THERE’S BOUND TO be someone— mom?—who prefers a Batman movie in which our hero learns the importance of family life and sharing. How can such a sharing, caring Dark Knight resonate with the adolescent, who prefers brooding, hiding in solitude and watching everyone from a point of concealment?

Fortunately, the makers of The Lego Batman Movie realize they are dealing with a figure who is a kaleidoscope of personas—a Batman for all seasons.

This version of the Caped Crusader has had his head turned by success. He does victory laps in the Batmobile, and fires a T-shirt cannon of souvenir Batshirts at the orphanage. During a quick visit there, he acquires an adopted son, Dick Grayson (Michael Cera), in an absence of mind.

This dizzying animated film still honors the Gothic premise of the pop culture legend. Returning from a mission, Batman stops to talk to a picture hanging on the wall: “Hi Mom. Hi Dad, I saved the city again today.” Batman withholds his feelings, refusing to acknowledge his 78-year-old relationship with the Joker (Zach Galifianakis), cutting the villain to the quick. On advice of his therapist and girlfriend Harley Quinn, The Joker withdraws… to the Phantom Zone, where the most fearsome villains are kept on ice.

The premise of a dimension stocked with everyone from Godzilla to Voldemort has been done before in the South Park Imaginationland episodes.

Still, this Batman movie gives the Joker some scare-power, with a sneering face threatening Gotham City from the clouded skies. The hurried ending is loaded with geek fodder: blink and you’ll miss The Lego ’60s chimera Egghead Batman Movie dressed in a white tux and egging the Bat-Signal.

PG; 106 Min. Five scriptwriters furnish Valleywide the gags; the new superachieving commissioner Barbara Gordon is a graduate of “Harvard for Cops,” exasperated butler Alfred (Ralph Fiennes!) is seen reading a book called “Setting Limits for the Out of Control Child.”

Robot Chicken vet Chris McKay makes a movie that’s like watching a really bright kid playing with the snap-together toys while talking to himself. The Joker, shooting a gun, goes “Piu! Piu!” like a boy playing pistol with his finger. You can laugh at your mixed feelings about Batman and still be a little moved when Robin is asked, “Are you ready to follow Batman and learn a few life lessons along the way?” —Richard von Busack

NorCal weather inspires moody new double album by Moon Duo

OR SANAE YAMADA— keyboardist and one half of psychedelic rockers Moon Duo— the most surreal aspect of relocating from the Bay Area to Portland a few years back was the difference in seasons.

Portland’s were pronounced, but she had barely noticed the cyclical shifts in San Francisco

Over time, her memories of Northern California became more difficult to place in time, because

there weren’t weather clues attached to them.

This realization, in part, inspired the group’s most ambitious project to date: a two-album exploration of the hidden energies in our universe.

It’s kind of about weather, but it’s also about the unseen spiritual energies that guide our world. The album is divided into the dark (Occult Architecture Vol. 1, released this month) and light (Occult Architecture Vol. 2, slated for release later this year).

“It wasn’t like we sat down and were like, ‘Let’s make a record about the seasons,’ but removing myself from the context of the seasons gave me totally different qualities to my

memories,” Yamada says. “It was more the binary aspects of things that we were talking about—the existence of opposites that contrast each other, at the same time define each other, and make up this whole.”

In a way, the concept of the record isn’t different than anything the group’s done on their previous three LPs. Examining the occult, the spirituality of the natural world, and even the weather (the album Circles was partially inspired by the sunniness of Colorado, where they recorded it) has always been a part of how the duo make music. What is different is the size and scope of the project—the two albums were made back to back to give them the feel of a single project. Going into it, they didn’t know if it would even work.

“It’s a very daunting concept to take on,” Yamada says. “I don’t by any means think that we covered it. We just opened a few doors, I guess. I think that the investigation

of the cycles and the patterns and structures that make up our reality, matter and consciousness and all of those have been an enduring fascination for both of us.”

The first record, which is supposed represent darkness, doesn’t sound how one might imagine. It features fast-driving, precise playing; a heavy dose of new wave synth, offset by Ripley Johnson’s fuzzed-out guitar.

Johnson’s vocals also feel different this time around. He sounds as if he’s in a trance—his delivery squashed, almost expressionless.

Yamada explains that she and Johnson weren’t looking to make a dark album—at least not in the sense of something evil or sorrowful.

The word that stuck out for them when they made the album was “claustrophobic.” In dialing in her synths, Yamada says she sought out “a lot of growling sounds and gurgling sounds, little sharp stabbing textures.”

She was thinking about a cave space, she says, like liquid bubbling up from the ground. The vocals were recorded normally, but were mixed in a way that gave them a compressed sound.

The forthcoming second installment of Occult Architecture has no such effect applied to the vocals.

The most important thing was for it to sound expansive and summer-y.

And Yamada worked on a different sound palette on Vol. 2. “I tried to make more sugary sounds, like granular floating textures,” she says.

“Like dust in the air.”

Ambition aside, the most remarkable thing about this pair of records may be the way they have expanded the group’s sound beyond the confines of the psych rock genre they are most often associated with.

“We definitely get labeled psychedelic, which I actually don’t mind so much, in that the term itself, is a pretty expansive term,” Yamada says. “I think a lot of things could fit under the heading. But I think in its current iteration, there’s definitely a fairly identifiable sound that goes along with it that we don’t necessarily fit that well.”

GARAGE PROG Drawing comparisons to The White Stripes and Foxy Shazam, North By North are hard to pin down.

Windy City Wailers THERE’S JUST SOMETHING about the horn line that comes in at about the 32-second mark of “All That Glitters”— the lead-off track from North By North’s excellent sophomore album, Last Days Of Magic—that screams The Blues Brothers.

But maybe that’s just a symptom of some sort of rock-writer confirmation bias, owing to the fact that this self-described “ghost punk” trio hail from Chicago.

According to Kendra Blank—keyboardist, touring drummer and one half of the core duo that comprises North By North—she has never heard her band and the 1980 John Belushi- and Dan Aykroyd-starring film mentioned in the same breath before. Blank does admit that she and Nate Girard, the band’s principal songwriter, do draw influence from other gritty Midwestern heroes, like The White Stripes and The Black Keys. And she says on their most recent tour, North By North were readily compared to the late, great nouveau-glam champions Foxy Shazam.

But no Jake and Elwood. The only thing Blank would offer in this regard, was a quip: “We play both kinds of rock: blues and glam.”

North By North do have a knack for merging the grandiose, climbing guitar lines of Brian May with the Rust Belt stomp of Jack and Meg White.

But there is third element to the band’s sound: prog. On “Dastardly,” Girard sounds like The Dear Hunter’s Casey Crescenzo with his voice funneled through a microphone that’s seen better days; a whistled lead loops around a loping beat, before a somber string section closes the song. And on “Kerosene Dream” a spooky, ghost-surf guitar riff gives way to delirium tremens organ, and the oom-pah-pah bounce of carnival-barker bass.

It’s an apt parallel when it comes to the volume of songs Blank and Girard have written. Just as Crescenzo has produced seven full-length records in 10 years with his Dear Hunter vehicle, North By North put out two double-LPs in the span of two years—Something Wicked in 2014 and Last Days Of Magic late last year—and the pair are already eyeing 2018 for another full-length.

It’s clear that Blank and Girard love what they do—both in the music itself, and as evidenced by their rigorous touring schedule. Not long after wrapping a 12-week trek, the pair are on the third week of a 15-week stint.

That said, it is normal that he’s driven to look. Men evolved to have their eyeballs all up in every hot woman’s business because the features considered beautiful in a woman correlate with health and fertility.

Ancestral men who passed on their genes (and mating psychology)— the men whose male descendants are walking the planet today—are those who went for the fertile young hotties, not the 70-year-old ladies with a lot of personality.

Not surprisingly, brain imaging studies by evolutionary psychologist Steven Platek and his colleagues find that when men see pictures of curvalicious women—those with an hourglass bod, a fertility indicator— there’s “activation” in (most notably) the nucleus accumbens. This is part of the brain’s reward circuitry and, as they put it, “the seat of addictive behavior.” Regarding their findings, Platek told me, “We think that this is why men quite literally find it challenging to look away from a highly attractive female body.”

No, not “impossible” to look away.

“Challenging.” Like it may sometimes

be for you to keep from stabbing your boyfriend in the thigh with a fork when he rubbernecks at a passing pair of Wonderbreasts. However, feeling disturbed by his girl-gawking isn’t a sign you’re emotionally defective. Consider that emotions aren’t there just to jazz up your day. Psychiatrist and evolutionary psychologist Randolph Nesse explains that emotions have a job to do—to motivate us to “respond adaptively” to threats and opportunities. For example, that rotten feeling you get in response to your boyfriend’s ogling is basically an alarm going off alerting you that a man’s commitment isn’t there or is waning.

Wanting to feel better pushes you to remedy the situation.

If your insecurity is tripping you up, it’s in how you seem to be secondguessing the emotions yelling at you, “Do something! HELLO?! Are you in a coma?” The thing is, you don’t have to feel assertive to be assertive. You just have to (gulp!) stand up for yourself as an assertive person would.

Again, the problem isn’t that your boyfriend’s looking; it’s that he’s looking (and commenting) while you’re standing right there, feelings and all. Be honest with him: This doesn’t just “bug” you; it hurts your feelings. It makes you feel disrespected.

And it needs to stop. Now.

For two years, I’ve been in the best relationship of my life, after years of really bad ones. I’m thinking that maybe the key to a happy relationship is having two people who think they aren’t good enough for each other. Not that we feel that in a pathetic way. We each just feel really grateful and lucky to be with the other person, and it makes a difference in how we treat each other.

Thoughts?—Happy At Last Sometimes the thing we tell ourselves is love is really “the thing I got into because I was scared I’d die alone— surrounded by empty single-serving zinfandel bottles—and get discovered 10 years later, mummified, on my couch.”

What seems key this time around— in how happy you two are—is the gratitude you feel. Gratitude for your partner comes out of noticing the sweet, thoughtful things they do, like taking

out the trash without needing to be “asked” at gunpoint.

However, what you’re grateful for isn’t so much the garbage relocation as what it shows—what social psychologist Kaska Kubacka describes as your partner’s “responsiveness to (your) needs.” This, in turn, tells you that your happiness is important to them, which tells you that they value you and the relationship. Awww.

Maitri confronts domestic violence, celebrates progress in community

HIS SATURDAY, MAITRI celebrates 26 years operating as a free, confidential nonprofit organization that helps South Asian families deal with domestic violence, emotional abuse, human trafficking and other forms of family conflict.

Unaffiliated with any cultural, social or religious organization, Maitri provides advice, legal help, transportation and even, in some cases, transitional housing for those who feel threatened in their own homes and in their closest relationships.

In a way, Maitri functions as a liaison between local South Asian women in need and the mainstream American support system that may initially seem too distant for these women to approach.

Just over a quarter-century ago, Maitri began when a handful of women started meeting in their respective houses. The renowned novelist Chitra Divakaruni was one of the co-founders. Several women from the original era still participate, either as board members, trustees or just on the periphery.

Maitri’s primary fundraising gala takes place each year, the 2017 incarnation of which unfolds Saturday, Feb. 25 at the Crowne Plaza Palo Alto. The event usually raises serious coin, with numerous Silicon Valley entrepreneurs, C-level executives and other high rollers

from the Bay Area's South Asian community all supporting the cause. Last year’s gala, to celebrate Maitri’s 25th anniversary, raised more than $600,000.

To be clear, when Maitri uses terms like “domestic violence,” the cases are not limited to partner-on-partner abuse. So much more is contained, including elderly abuse or even the destructive effect that parent-onparent emotional abuse has on the children who grow up watching it every day. What’s more, cultural dynamics particular to the South Asian community, like emotional abuse from extended families, further complicate things because traditional American support systems often aren't familiar with such cases.

“It’s just as important as education, it’s just as important as medicine, it’s just as important as technology,” says Reni Narayen, a Maitri trustee and gala co-chair. “Part of the problem is that we have to educate people, because so many in our community don’t believe the magnitude of the problem. They think it’s just some

rare thing you see in movies.”

When it comes to solving problems, Maitri is not a female-only operation. More and more men are becoming involved, realizing that women alone cannot rectify a few thousand years’ worth of violent patriarchal customs. Men have to be equal partners in the solution.

S. Suresh, one of Maitri's newest board members, says he was blown away by the dedication of the volunteers. He began contributing in numerous ways, everything from writing blogs to driving trucks.

“From a positive, surprised perspective, I find everybody whom I have interacted with, the employees, the staff members, the board of governors, and the trustees, they are all completely committed to the cause,” Suresh says.

“None of the staff members do it because they think of it as a job. Their commitment is remarkable.”

The Maitri gala event is usually a glorious and jubilant evening.

Hundreds of people show up to celebrate Maitri's successes, rather than dwell on the sadness of the subject matter. Food, music, dance and overall familial camaraderie carry on into the night.

Maitri board member Vinita Belani, who founded EnActe Arts after retiring from the tech industry, will orchestrate the entertainment, which includes Kathak dance, live music and DJ, plus visual performance narratives all inspired by the Mughal era of Indian history, when Hindu and Muslim cultures merged to forever influence food, dress, architecture, city planning and design.

“The reason we picked Kathak is because it’s the ultimate example of the melding of Hindu and Muslim cultures,” Belani says.

Suresh says Maitri has reached an inflection point. People in the South Asian community are becoming more open to talk about the issues, which wasn’t the case 10 years ago. More people are coming on board to help mainstream the issues and Matiri just has to figure out how to expand its operation for the long haul.

“Scaling is the problem right now,” Suresh says. “The problems exist, the numbers are huge, and we used to ignore it. Now, we are a little more open to talk about it, and we are no longer ashamed. It is good for the people who are impacted. But that means that Maitri has to scale up.”

Vina Enoteca marries traditional Italian with inspiring tweaks

IVEN THAT IT once served as home of the Stanford family winery, it’s fitting that Italian restaurant and bar Vina Enoteca opened its doors last fall at the historic Stanford Barn in Palo Alto.

The restaurant’s modern décor and lighting, in contrast with the rustic brick-laden walls and exposed beams of the interior architecture, serves as a metaphor for Vina Enoteca’s overarching mission to provide high-quality, handcrafted Italian foods and wines, delivered with a modern twist and aimed to serve the South Bay’s diverse palates.

Proprietor Rocco Scordella, who also owns the casual, Italian brunch spot Tootsies across the courtyard at the Stanford Barn, opened Vina Enoteca to share his unique take on Italian cuisine, which was inspired by his own upbringing in Northeast Italy. Scordella’s culinary training began at the age of 13 in Bologna and it has taken him across Europe and the East Coast, before leading him to Palo Alto. His commitment to authenticity is made clear by the restaurant’s simple but vital focus on freshly made pasta, pizza dough and bread, each one playing a significant role in Vina Enoteca’s dishes.

Vina Enoteca has a “master mixologist” on staff, so I started off with the Strafumati ($13) off the restaurant’s house cocktail menu, which came highly recommended

by our server. Made with plantation pineapple rum, lemongrass, curacao, mint and crushed ice, the drink is refreshingly tasty and oh-so-strong.

The wine selection also offer an impressive array of reasonably priced Italian wines, as the restaurant’s name (“Wine Shop”) would suggest.

Next came the seasonal insalata d’inverno, a beautifully-plated mix of both roasted and raw winter vegetables and mixed greens ($16), carefully drizzled in a light but flavorful charred Meyer lemon vinaigrette. With hearty pieces of beet, butternut squash, potato, Brussel sprouts, roasted fennel and sliced radish, the salad included a light sprinkling of toasted quinoa that gave it the perfect amount of crunch to compliment the density of the vegetables. Freshly baked bread and dipping olive oil was also brought to the tableside, which paired nicely with the salad and sopped up the pasta sauces later in our meal.

For main courses, we decided to stick with the pizza and pasta

dishes that have brought Vina Enoteca a devoted following.

Where gluten is concerned, Vina Enoteca not only delivers, but excels beyond expectations. We went for the funghi pizza ($18), an alternate take on a classic Italian staple. With wild mushrooms, San Marzano tomatoes, mozzarella and Montasio cheeses and coarsely cut, raw radicchio and red onion on top, the flavors of the cooked and raw ingredients made for an exciting array of flavors and textures in each bite. The foundation of the dish, the crust, was perfectly baked, airy and soft, but not at all doughy.

Just as we were making progress on the pizza (and considering ordering another) the pastas arrived and sealed the deal on what was already an incredible dining experience. Opting for two pasta classics, we went with the spaghetti gamberi e cozze ($22) and the tortelli cacao e pepe ($27)—both offered slight but significant changes to classic flavors.

The spaghetti dish was expertly seasoned with parsley, garlic, Middle Eastern aleppo pepper, breadcrumb-encrusted mussels and juicy rock shrimp in a butter sauce.

The tortelli dish included carefully handmade leek and potato ravioli arranged neatly amongst dollops of pecorino and black pepper sformato and wild arugula pesto, all sitting in a creamy butter sauce that coated each ravioli. The sformato, an Italian cheese, egg and vegetable custard, was rich and flavorful and complimented each bite of potato and leek-stuffed pasta. The arugula pesto was incredibly fresh and earthy, unlike any other pesto I have tried, and balanced out the rich, cheesy flavor of the sformato.

Vina Enoteca offers a rare home for both guests who crave simple, true Italian food, and adventure seekers on a quest for skillfully crafted dishes and an equally impressive bar menu. It’s sure to become a mainstay in the Bay Area’s ever-diversifying restaurant scene.

The trend made its way up to the Bay Area from Southern California and for now, Pekoe is one of the few places offering split cup in San Jose. The cup is simply made of two 12-oz. sections with a gap in between and joint at the rim. The height is slightly taller than a standard cup to make up for the volume lost from the gap. This cup should have come around sooner to spare me from the gluttonous moments in my youth, when I came home with two full-size boba drinks, having been unable to decide between two flavors and ordering one drink with no ice to save for the next day.

On a recent Sunday afternoon, Pekoe’s long line seemed a little offputting. Then I heard the line is supposedly much longer on other days.

The cashier counter is right at the door and the rest of the dining room is used as an elegant waiting area. The white pleather seating and backlit tables are reminiscent of a downtown nightclub. There is no space for the line to wrap around inside the store, though.

Even with two options, I found myself indecisive between which two drinks to choose. I sense a five-way split cup in my future. Each flavor is $2.59 for a total of $5.18 for a split cup order compared with $4 for all other drinks. A split cup offers 24 ounces total, which is about the same as a regular-size cup.

Pekoe provides two menus of set combinations in addition to a “create-your-own” section. The Signature Drinks don’t change while the daily specials alternate.

With drink names like Angela, Foxy Brown and Thai Me Up, the menu surely matches the nightclub décor. For those who like the classics, the standard options for tea (Jasmine, Earl Grey, Ceylon, and Assam) are available in addition to special flavors (Red Guava, Blood Orange and White Peach) and unique add-ins (Mango Star, White Pearls and Golden Jelly). I decided on the Pekoe Special which is a milk tea option and the Manly Melons, which is a fruit tea with aloe vera.
