With a funding of $44M, 4Cs can definitely defend itself using the millions of taxpayer dollars. That said, government agencies MUST stop the flow of cash to 4Cs until matters of big concern, such as mismanagement, misappropriation of funds and hostile work environment are resolved. Fresh to Fight A freshman congressman for all of a month, Rep. RO KHANNA has wasted little time in scolding his new colleagues—on both sides of the aisle. In a series of tweets lamenting Sen. BERNIE SANDERS’ failed amendment to allow cheaper prescriptions to be imported from Canada, Khanna also took square aim at 13 fellow Democrats who voted against it. A little more than a week later he grilled GRACE-MARIE TURNER, president of the Galen Institute, in a House Budget Committee meeting after she refused to disclose her organization’s financial ties while testifying against the Affordable Care Act (a.k.a. Obamacare). After eight terms of MIKE HONDA, who was well liked but more a trusted vote than a thought leader, Silicon Valley and East Bay constituents might just be in for some spirited leadership out of District 17. Despite not having the standing Honda held as a member of the powerful They House Committee on Did Appropriations, as well What? as having a crappier office—Khanna drew the SEND TIPS TO 44th pick out of a lottery FLY@ METRONEWS. for 50 offices given to COM new House members— the new congressman is apparently working on a bipartisan bill to create term limits for the House and the Senate. Meanwhile, he has criticized President DONALD TRUMP’s economic initiatives, which, Khanna says, will only serve to “help the elite.” But the nuance in how he intends to challenge Trump on executive orders—such as the toxic antiimmigration directive signed at the end of last week—is admittedly a challenge.

“Trump’s whole insight is the truth doesn't matter as much as perception in a soundbite culture,” Khanna told Fly. For this reason, Khanna explained, he has decided to avoid fights over Trump’s tax returns, familial conflicts of interest and other disputes that make for good press but little policy. “While we need to be loud, I think the Democrats win when we focus on economics,” Khanna said. “When we make it about policies, the American people are with us.”

Immigration-Ed NO RECESS President Trump’s executive orders on immigration have sparked protests across the country.

Parents press San Jose Unified, city’s largest school district, on plans to protect undocumented students

ARIA TOVAR volunteered more than 500 hours at Washington Elementary last year. That’s almost 12 hours a week. “I do it with a lot of love,” she said in Spanish. Her son has autism and needs her “in all aspects,” she said, which is why she’s at the school so frequently. But Washington’s tight-knit community also functions as a support system for parents, many of whom are undocumented.

Tovar and other parents worry that President Donald Trump’s executive orders will lead Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to show up at schools with deportation orders. “If I arrive one morning to volunteer,” she said, “I don’t want to be separated from my children.”

East Side Union and Gilroy Unified school districts released strong statements of support for immigrant families—with explicit provisions about keeping ICE off of campuses—but San Jose Unified’s proposed statement is far shorter and more general. With roughly 30,900 enrolled students, SJUSD is the largest school district in the county. Its statement makes no mention of deportations. Instead, it vaguely commits to helping students feel “valued, respected, and safe.” At an SJUSD board meeting Jan. 26, parents

and children packed the room to express their frustration.

“The resolution as it’s written has no value,” said Brett Bymaster, a parent at Washington and a pastor at The River Church in Willow Glen.

“We won’t accept that.”

Tom Torlakson, the state superintendent of public instruction, released guidelines for districts in crafting resolutions of support, written by lawyers from the American Civil Liberties Union and National Immigration Law Center. Many districts in the South Bay adopted the guidelines’ strong language. Morgan Hill’s resolution, for example, states explicitly that ICE’s presence would disrupt the learning environment, that ICE agents will not be allowed at schools, and that the superintendent will protect data about student and family identities. In December, Oakland Unified School District committed to remain a “sanctuary” for undocumented students and families, detailing what staff should do if ICE seeks anyone’s personal information.

Foley unexpectedly limited public comment on the issue to 20 speakers and reduced individual speaking time to one minute instead of the usual two. When the board president closed comments, a silver-haired woman called out, “How can you say you’re listening to us?” to cheers from the crowd. Foley interrupted, “You’re out of order.”

Vazquez, one of the parent speakers, struggled to convey her thoughts in the shortened time.

“You’re up there speaking and the clock’s counting down and there are so many things you wanted to say, but how can you explain all the sadness and the stress you’ve been feeling?”

Foley took issue with the parents’ demands. “There is an adversarial nature here in that we had to be told to keep children safe,” she said to the audience.

“That is our number one priority.”

Peter Allen, a spokesman for SJUSD, said the district would not comply with anything “short of a warrant” and does not keep any information on students’ immigration status. “That way we can’t be compelled by the federal government or anyone else.”

But parents are seeking policy specifics from the board, not just vocal reassurance. “I’m an immigrant mother, and beyond that, I love my immigrant family,” Marcelo said. “I think the district has the responsibility and obligation to respond to us.”

Castellanos pushed the rest of the board to include language ensuring that “ICE will not be let onto campus at all, period.” Joined

by Superintendent Nancy Albarrán, who also speaks Spanish, Castellanos met with Washington parents for several hours earlier in January, but Albarrán was not in attendance at last week’s board meeting.

Daniel Morales, a grandfather who attended the board meeting because his community is “half undocumented,” recalled INS raids on the East Side of San Jose in the 1960s. “The parents were very frightened, just like this,” he said. “It opens up a lot of scars.”

The SJUSD board will convene again Feb. 9 to discuss changes to the resolution. A vote on revision is scheduled for March 2.

San Jose Unified’s language is far less specific than the state model.

“All of us as parents and as Latinos are worried,” said Monica Vazquez, a parent of two Washington Elementary students who spoke at the Jan. 26 board meeting.

Miguel Luna fears for his grandchildren’s safety. “We don’t know how safe they’ll be in the classrooms at school,” he said.

Parents have asked for teacher training on how to respond if ICE agents ask for student information, which the San Jose Teachers’ Association said they’ll support.

Pam Foley, president of the SJUSD board, resisted adding stronger language to the San Jose Unified resolution because “there are already laws keeping ICE off campus.” She’s technically correct. Right now, ICE can’t enter school campuses because of an Obama administration executive order deeming them “sensitive locations,” along with churches and community centers. But just hours before San Jose Unified debated the resolution, ICE agents appeared at San Francisco’s Good Samaritan family center seeking information from staff. The visit stoked fears of more raids to come.

Days later, even green card holders— legal permanent residents who’d been vetted through proper channels and live in the United States—were being detained at airports because of the Trump administration’s executive order banning immigrants from seven predominantly Muslim countries.

Parents say they have valid reasons to fear that Obama’s protection order for schools is in peril.

Although 53 percent of San Jose Unified students are Latino, only one of the five voting members of the school board, Teresa Castellanos, is Latina and a Spanish speaker. Board members did not appear to be using the bulky translation headsets that many parents wore at the Jan. 26 meeting, even though the majority of parents who spoke to the board did so only in Spanish. Multiple board members expressed sympathy.

“It makes my heart really sad.

I cannot express that enough,” said Kimberly Meek, representing Almaden Valley. But the majority of the board seemed unaware of the contrast between San Jose’s resolution and those of neighboring districts.

BY JENNIFER WADSWORTH The Oakland Raiders’ hoped-for move to Sin City hit a major snag this week with billionaire casino magnate Sheldon Adelson walking away from the deal, prompting Goldman Sachs to follow suit. The Raiders and the NFL planned to pool $500 million with $750 million from Nevada taxpayers. However, without Adelson and the investment bank picking up the rest of the tab, it’s unclear how the Silver & Black plan to fund their $2 billion Las Vegas dream home.

News of the deal falling apart has also reignited a conversation about luring the Raiders an hour’s drive south to a Silicon Valley stadium built for two.

The city of Santa Clara’s $1.2 billion Levi’s Stadium, home to the San Francisco 49ers, was built with an extra locker room in case another team decided to sublet the space, according to Mayor Lisa Gillmor. But it’s too soon to say whether the city will pitch

owner Mark Davis on getting his team to share digs with Jed York’s Niners.

“There has to be willingness from the Raiders and the 49ers to work together,” Gillmor said. “But the structure is there and the space is set up for two teams.”

Gillmor said she doubts that Santa Clara’s fraught relationship with the Niners would complicate plans to accommodate a new team. The 49ers recently sued the city after Gillmor and other City Council members accused the club of withholding stadium financial records.

If anything, Gillmor said, the city is better prepared to hammer out a contract that benefits both the public and the Raiders. The mayor added that it’s up to the 49ers to bring up the possibility of sharing Levi’s with Davis, who was reportedly uninterested in calling Santa Clara home a few years ago—the last time the offer was discussed.

“The ball’s in the 49ers’ court, as far as approval rights for a second team goes,” Gillmor said. “We haven’t discussed that yet, but they seem to be doing well financially right now.

We’ll definitely have to revisit that contract discussion.”

Councilwoman Teresa O’Neill said Santa Clara has a stronger selling point than Vegas or San Antonio, Texas— another location considered by the Raiders—due to the Bay Area’s larger media market and high average income.

In the event that Davis hunkers down—temporarily or otherwise—at Levi’s Stadium, the venue would need a bit of a makeover.

“Right now, it’s the house the Yorks built,” O’Neill said. “Maybe part of the presentation to Davis could be showing him how quickly they could obfuscate the impact of the 49ers branding.”

The 49ers did not immediately respond for comment.

Prompted by an inmate’s fatal beating and outrage over police shootings, Santa Clara County has adopted a plan to outfit sheriff ’s deputies and jail officers with body cameras.

In a unanimous vote last week, the Board of Supervisors approved a five-year, $4 million contract with Taser International to outfit 1,142 officers with cameras.

Supervisor Joe Simitian first proposed body cameras at the end of 2014, a year marked by the police shooting that killed Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, and launched the Black Lives Matter movement. A year later, the death of San Jose inmate Michael Tyree at the hands of three jail deputies prompted Simitian to expand the body camera proposal to include correctional officers.

“We can watch with anguish what's happened in other communities around the country, shake our heads, and then move on, or, we can accept the responsibility to do something,” Simitian said in a statement after the Jan. 24 vote.

“These certainly aren't problems that are going to solve themselves. The technology is available, and I think we ought to be using it.”

The county’s body-cam policy brings it in line with other major law enforcement agencies. San Jose began rolling out body cameras in 2016— eight years behind Campbell, the first South Bay city to adopt the technology.

Civil rights advocates raised concerns about how the cameras would be deployed, arguing that the technology is only as useful as the policy guiding its use. The Electronic Frontier Foundation expressed concerns that the cameras could become another tool for the government to spy on civilians.

Simitian agreed that body cameras are no panacea, but one part of a larger plan to increase transparency.

OW’S THAT RESOLUTION working out? The beginning of a new year means we once again start caring about improving our health for at least a month—and hopefully even longer. But most recommendations we hear either require less of something we like, or more of something we don’t. A bad habit can be hard to break, just as a healthy habit hard to make. So, we scoured for tips to well-being that might survive beyond January; don’t worry, they don’t require monk-like levels of self denial or bingeeating broccoli while sprinting on a treadmill.

With any luck, 2017 will be the year we focus on a more complete vision of health—especially given the impending/potential repeal of Obamacare, which could take health care away from millions of Americans. In order to

get a more holistic view of what can be done, we asked local doctors from varying disciplines for their best health advice. What follows are their top-five tips.

Oil Up Cannabidiol, or CBD, is usually administered through oral capsules or sprays, but there are also tongue drops and balms. It can be purchased at health food stores and apothecaries.

“It is one of the most promising ingredients I’ve found in all my years doing medicine,” says Aimée Gould Shunney, a practicing

naturopathic doctor at Santa Cruz Integrative Medicine, of cannabidiol. “Because it is hempderived, it is not psychoactive, does not get you high, and you don’t need a prescription to get it.”

Shunney says CBD modulates the stress response by acting on the limbic system, which is the part of the brain that manages emotional life, and that it is particularly effective at helping with sleep and anxiety issues. “Helping to manage stress is particularly important, because doctors often don’t have enough time to create stress resilience with their patients,” she says. “Stress will always be there, so

the question is how to treat more than the symptoms and create better stress resilience.” She continues, “It has really been a game-changer. It’s been very well-received, and is safe, fast and reliable.”

Although nothing is for everyone, Shunney reports that the vast majority of people experience positive outcomes. “It balances them on a foundational level,” she says.

Perhaps best of all, not only is it not addictive but unlike many other medications, Shunney adds, patients often report needing less and less CBD over time. Many people are able to partially or completely wean off of their other, more serious and

addictive medications like opiates for pain and benzodiazepines for anxiety. CBD has minimal side effects, and the worst one is apparently feeling too sleepy.

“It is one of the most amazing additions to my practice in the last 16 years,” says Shunney, who adds that the treatment holds tremendous promise for the future.

Roll With the Seasons From the Ayurvedic perspective, health is not just about the absence of disease; it is a holistic state of equilibrium between multiple facets of the body and mind. Manish

Chandra, an Ayurvedic practitioner, asserts that one way to find your own equilibrium heading into the new year is to know yourself and your own particular dosha, or constitution, and to follow a diet and lifestyle based on that.

“It is unique to each person,” Chandra says. “One size does not fit all.” (One can find his or her own dosha by taking a quiz online.)

Although different lifestyles and diets work for different people, Chandra says, one thing that too many of us engage in is an Ayurvedic concept known as prajnaparadha.

“It translates to ‘crimes against wisdom,’” explains Chandra, using

the example that immunity is compromised in winter because we don’t follow seasonal routines.

“Animals know to follow the patterns of the natural world, but many humans don’t, and that’s often why we get sick.”

For this reason, Chandra says it is important to not only know oneself, but also to know the season. “Not all foods and lifestyles are appropriate for all seasons,” he says. “Winter is not the time to be doing cold and raw foods. Instead, it is a time to be eating more warm and grounding foods.”

He says that sipping warm water is a good way to provide heat to the

body during cold weather, and that it also helps to cleanse the intestinal lining. “Turmeric and ginger are also particularly helpful in the winter because they are antibacterial and antiviral,” Chandra adds. He also recommends taking advantage of nature giving us long, dark nights during the winter to sleep and rest more, and become more spiritually introverted. “It is a time to go inward, to contemplate and reflect, and it’s a great opportunity to get to know oneself better.”

Fermented Foods The most important health recommendation that nutrition consultant and MS/RD Jocelyn Dubin makes for the new year is all about bacteria. And she recommends more of it, not less. After all, a major factor that determines our overall health is the relative amount of good and bad bacteria that call our bodies home.

“We are more bacteria than

human,” Dubin says. “The bacteria cells actually outnumber our human cells.”

And what’s a good way to culture the kind of healthy bacteria that leads to a healthy human? “Eat fermented foods,” Dubin says.

“We lose healthy bacteria every day, so they must be replenished.

It is important to create a diverse army in our gut; our gut health determines overall health.”

Kimchi and sauerkraut are some of the best examples of fermented foods loaded with healthy bacteria, while some yogurts are also beneficial, as long as they have live and active cultures.

The best bacteria for us, Dubin says, are naturally cultured at normal human body temperatures.

This is why she also recommends her clients eat foods like cold miso—such as in salad dressings and dipping sauces—and refrigerated pickles. Healthy bacteria start to

Rethink, Recharge

MICROBE DOSE As a registered dietitian and nutrition consultant at Nourish, Jocelyn Dubin says that fermented foods like sauerkraut, kimchi, miso, pickles, and some yogurts help to replenish good bacteria.

As easy as it is to get emotionally lost in the whirlwind of everyday life and the increasingly negative news cycle, it’s important to regularly assess one’s internal mental state, and be mindful if mental or physical red flags start to pop up.

Dr. Kirsten Carraway, a licensed clinical psychologist, recommends conceptualizing mental and emotional health as if they were on the opposite side of a balance scale.

“Take stock of the factors in your life that recharge you (coping strategies), as well as the factors that deplete you (stressors),” she writes in an email.

“Regularly assess whether these two sides of the scale are in balance, as the balance changes often with life circumstances.

“If you are experiencing symptoms (e.g., anxiety, depression, pain, illness, physical symptoms, sleep disturbance, fatigue, etc.), your stressors are likely outweighing your coping strategies,” Carraway adds.

What to do if this is the case?

“Make choices in your life about how to achieve a better balance by enhancing coping strategies and by reducing what stressors you can, thereby adjusting factors on both sides of the balance,” she says.

Not only does the balance scale visualization make intuitive sense, it also empowers by allowing one to attack her or his emotional health from two different sides. It’s important to be cognizant of the stressors in life, but changing or removing them often ranges from difficult to impossible. However, we can all do more to “recharge” ourselves and add more fulfilling behaviors, activities and coping strategies into the mix.

Move It The word “exercise” often conjures up images of gyms, stationary bikes and elliptical machines, but the key is simply movement, which can take on various forms and doesn’t have to feel like hell.

“Exercise is key, and is a gain for both mental and physical fitness,” says Dr. Mary Patz, an internal medicine specialist of Palo Alto Medical Foundation. “Everyone has a capacity for some form of exercise no matter their age and functional status.”

Not only do exercise and movement help with physical conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol, they also have far-reaching impacts on the mind-body connection and mental health as well. “More and more behavioral health specialists discuss exercise as part of treatment for both anxiety and depression,” Patz says, noting that one of the best recommendations for people to

stave off dementia is aerobic exercise.

“Frequent exercise can be an outlet for more social interaction as well.”

Activities like going to the gym and attending exercise classes can often lead to increased socialization, which is in and of itself a healthy behavior.

“Also important is moderation, with regard to diet and alcohol,” says Patz, who laments the number of people she sees who don’t even make an effort to curb their intake.

“One in 10 Americans is a functional alcoholic—but in moderation, this can be a safe and perhaps beneficial enjoyment for most people.”

Patz also stresses moderation in diet, due to the number of food addictions and eating disorders she encounters. “I am concerned about progressive food restriction and fads, especially among younger women where ‘healthy’ eating seems, at extreme, more a cover for eating disorder behavior,” she says.

“Most people are able to eat most things—what we lack is the ability to achieve moderation.”

Deploying actors, overhead projectors and a live orchestra, the Chicago-based puppetry ensemble Manual Cinema use shadow and music to tell compelling stories.

‘Justice for All?’ exhibition asks just how far we’ve come

HEN SAN JOSE artist Judy Shintani helped to dismantle an aging barrack where her father and many more JapaneseAmerican citizens were housed during World War II, she knew the pieces of wood she collected were special.

There was a weighty significance to the reclaimed lumber and so Shintani kept the scraps—biding her time as she searched for the appropriate project. She recently put the old timber to use, arranging it in the form of an American flag, surrounded by a fence of barbed wire. It’s title, Pledge

Allegiance, references the patriotic mantra her father and his imprisoned neighbors were required to recite every day during their internment.

As the 75th anniversary of Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s civil rights-usurping Executive Order 9066 approaches—and in the wake of President Donald Trump’s freeze on Muslim immigrants—the piece speaks loudly to many.

“I decided to make a flag because they used to have to say the pledge of allegiance every day,” Shintani says, “and here they are pledging to a country that is keeping them imprisoned as American citizens.”

Pledge Allegiance will be featured as one of several works at the De Anza College Euphrat Museum of Art’s newest exhibition, “Justice for All?” The show aims to provide a multicultural and poetic examination

of injustice, protest and identity across generations.

The exhibit—a collaboration with Silicon Valley Reads—draws inspiration from books, including Unfair: The New Science of Criminal Injustice by Adam Benforado and Writing My Wrongs by Shaka Senghor.

The show will feature works by various Bay Area artists in a variety of media and will touch upon a number of social justice causes—from the antiTrump movement to police brutality to the legacy of Japanese internment camps and more.

Joining Shintani, artists Joseph Delapp, Samuel Rodriguez and Jamil Hellu will be contributing to the gallery. Many of the pieces come in the form of collaborations with De Anza art students.

Drawing from the Silicon Valley Reads book list, Diana Argabrite, the exhibit’s curator and museum director, searched for pieces that meditated on the theme of injustice—whether in the United States or elsewhere in the world.

and social injustices of the past and the present through a diverse set of works, including painting, photography and sculpture.

“We need to face injustice and look at the consequences,” Argabrite says.

“It is so important to come from a place of empathy in both our personal actions and institutional system.”

Inequality and anguish are embodied in each piece. And although the theme was decided prior to Trump’s election, Argabrite says there couldn’t have been a more perfect time for this exhibition to open.

De Anza art and sculpture students got the chance to work with Joseph DeLappe—a San Jose State University alumnus and current professor of games and tactical media at Abertay University in Scotland—on his sculpture titled Liberty Weeps.

The sculpture is assembled from multiple cardboard sheets—all stacked in such a way as to depict Lady Liberty crying into her hands. The modern and simplistic piece draws the viewer’s attention not solely because of its size, but also because of its twist on a wellknown monument.

DeLappe says that the meaning behind his sculpture has changed since its debut in 2015. “It’s a piece that interrupts your thoughts on the Statue of Liberty,” he explains. “It has taken on more resonance as politics have deteriorated in our country.”

DeLappe says that this sculpture has resonated with people— especially recently. He sees the piece as a way to get his audience talking about issues that go ignored.

Shintani says Pledge Allegiance also serves to remind people of the injustices that too often go unnoticed. She says her father spent most of his teenage life in an internment camp, and to this day he never really talks about it.

Shintani views the sculpture as a way of encapsulating the discrimination of the time as well as offering a path forward. “My work is an alternative to the textbook. It goes beyond the textbooks,” she says. “It’s a way of having a more personal and community experience. It’s more powerful.”

The curation of “Virgin Landscape: Representations of Women and the American West” highlights women both in front of and behind the camera lens.

The exhibit’s title—“Virgin Landscape”—is accounted for in one of the cerebral thesis statements that tenuously link the idea of “virgin lands with the rise of women in the American West.” That particular connection between pure and unspoiled land and the photographs themselves remains somewhat elusive (you can almost make it out if you wrinkle your brow and squint a little), but it doesn’t detract from the overall impact of the images themselves.

“Virgin Landscape” is divided into four sections that are more fluid than distinctly held within their appointed categories.

The first, “Nudes and Landscapes,” playfully juxtaposes the naked human form next to images from the natural world. Edward Weston asked his model to pose with her arms circling under her left kneecap. On the wall to her right hangs Pepper, a bell pepper whose flesh has also formed and settled into sinuous curves. They are visual cousins, if not twins. Weston manipulates nature—in the female form—to imitate the natural form of a fully grown and ripened pepper.

Virgin Landscape Thru Mar 19 de Saisset Museum, Santa Clara

The photographs on display under the heading “Migration and Agricultural Labor” all date back to the late 1930s and belong entirely to Dorothea Lange, best known for the iconic Dust Bowl portrait of the pensive Migrant Mother.

Lange’s portraits capture an extraordinarily layered depth of emotion. The human details are so specific and informative. In Singing hymns before opening of meeting of Mother’s Club at Arvin Farm Security Administration (FSA) camp for migrants, California, 1938, three women hold hymnals in their hands, but only one stares directly at Lange’s lens. She cradles a sleeping baby in her right arm.

All three are gaunt, nearly expressionless. In this austere setting, it’s hard to believe they’re about to open their mouths to sing in praise of anything.

Judy Dater and Anne Noggle are given their due in the “Gender Identity” category, but for entirely different reasons. Dater’s famous Ms. Clingfree, 1982, retains its satirical pop as a witty, colorful takedown of “woman as housekeeper.” Like many of the other photographers here, Noggle represents a world that’s exclusively female. In other words, it’s virgin territory for male viewers who willfully ignore it, and let it go unseen. —Jeffrey Edalatpour

Shaky Foundation NO WORDS After a home-invasion attack, an Iranian couple struggle to find answers in Oscar-nominated “The Salesman.”

Truth is hard to come by in engrossing Iranian film ‘The Salesman’

I

N THE SALESMAN, we have a look at how Iranian artists are standing on crumbling ground. It was a winner at Cannes, for best actor and script, and now it’s national news because of the Trump administration’s ban on Iranians entering our nation.

Academy Award winning director Asghar Farhadi (A Separation) has said he’s not attending the Oscars this year, even if the ban is lifted. On the bright side, there’s no publicity man for your film like the president of the United States.

It’s an indication of the way Iranian films are made—immersive, circumspect, slippery—that they start with circumstances so familiar to their core audience that they don’t need much explanation. The Salesman begins with an apartment shaking itself to pieces. An earthquake? A man-made quake, caused by some careless bulldozer excavation next door, made worse by chronic jerrybuilding in the capital city.

The clumsy construction leaves the home of Emad (Shahab Hosseini) and his wife, Rana (Taraneh Alidoosti), with cracked windows, gas leaks and crumbling plaster. An American film would begin with a search for financial restitution. In this part of Tehran, no one expects

much justice. The couple transplants to a new, leaky apartment in a worse neighborhood, setting the stage for a more serious invasion of their home.

Emad is a film and drama teacher, starring in and staging a little-theater production of Death of a Salesman, with Rana in the role of Linda Loman. There are the usual difficulties—because of the censors, the actress playing the bad girl Miss Francis has lines about leaving a hotel room halfclad, while wearing a chador and a stout raincoat. Later, in a crowded classroom of unconvinced boys, Emad teaches the primordial film of the Iranian New Wave, 1969’s The Cow. The story leaves the combative students baffled at the Kaf ka-like metamorphosis: “How does a man turn into a cow?” “Gradually,” Emad replies.

When Rana is in her new home later, she’s attacked and beaten in

the shower by an intruder. The extent of the attack is up to us to gauge. Rana denies she was raped— the viewer suspects she is in denial.

The couple don’t call the police, because the cops are going to regard Rana as a loose woman who got what was coming to her. Moreover, the previous occupant of their new flat was a prostitute, kicked out by the landlord, leaving all her stuff behind. Pathetically, the crayon drawings her child scrawled are still on the walls. There is evidence, however. In his haste, the assailant left behind his truck, his keys, his cellphone and a wad of money to pay for what he did.

Farhadi’s style is direct and unadorned, and wise about city life. (The Salesman proves the urban proverb that living next to prostitutes is fine—it’s their clients you need to worry about.)

It takes a lot of skill not to turn this into a rape-revenge movie.

Farhadi almost approaches that abysmal genre. Instead this firstrate director fascinates us with the way a “cultural” couple—to use the flattering word their new neighbors use—handles a mysterious attack, in a land where the husband is traditionally supposed to be more shamed by such an attack than the wife.

Alidoosti brilliantly evokes the trauma she suffered, and she shows a moral backbone no one in the film can match. The reveal of a highly pathetic culprit makes this the smartest kind of movie on the subject, up with Polanski’s Death and the Maiden. But the casting… not to spoil, but Farhadi went a little far in his presentation of the culprit as an all-too-vulnerable human. There are certain crimes it takes some muscle and good health to carry out. Let’s put it like this: Sherlock Holmes wouldn’t buy the explanation. Otherwise, Farhadi’s melodrama-free drama impresses with the bewildering hunt for truth amid chronic falseness and religious hypocrisy.

Revolution Rap RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE On ‘Run The Jewels 3,’ El-P and Killer Mike give us all the rap album we truly need.

Run The Jewels mix uproarious punch lines, incisive political critique

HEN KILLER MIKE and El-P banded together to form Run The Jewels back in 2013, both members had been making music for well over a decade.

Still, neither had found mainstream success.

But thanks to uproariously playful, yet unabashedly political, wordplay and razor sharp production, Run the Jewels’ third album—Run The Jewels 3—is No.

1 on Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, despite the record’s surprise Christmas Eve release and lack of a major radio single.

As a solo artist, Killer Mike has never been shy about talking politics, but Run the Jewels didn’t come out the gate as an explicitly political group. RTJ’s first record is mostly a celebration of friendship and love of the game—full of hilarious and innovative braggadocio. On it, the two rappers call out everyone from Kanye West to Kreayshawn, celebrate their team-up as a Christmas miracle, and give Prince Paul a whole song to riff on being a clueless sleaze (“How about I come over tonight and pick you up on my brand new Segway?”).

But as RTJ has grown, so has their willingness to speak openly— and poigniantly—on political issues. During the 2016 primaries, Killer Mike threw his weight wholeheartedly behind Bernie Sanders, speaking with him at rallies (calling him, in one speech, “the only candidate for black voters”), and working tirelessly to bring Sanders’s policies to as many new voters as possible. In an interview with the senator in Mike’s barbershop in Atlanta, the rapper says “In every black barbershop, there’s two black guys and an honorary white guy…It’s gonna be Martin, Malcolm, Bernie.”

Now on their supposed final album (we’ll see about that), the group is more openly political than ever. The theme of the record is simple: revolt, fight back, do not give in. Nowhere is this more apparent than on the album closer, the double-banger “A Report to the Shareholders / Kill Your

Masters.” The song opens with the declaration that when we choose the lesser of two evils, “the devil still gon’ win,” and ends with a promise: “until it’s over, I remain hostile.” Mike raps about breaking down in tears at the Democratic Convention listening to the mothers of Trayvon Martin and Sandra Bland speak about police violence. And in its final moments, the track features a surprise guest verse from Rage Against the Machine’s Zack de la Rocha, who returns after his much celebrated verse and hook on “Close Your Eyes” from Run the Jewels 2.

As always, El-P’s beats remain his own. He is increasingly becoming a genre unto himself, filling his tracks with dissonant Moogs, spy movie bongos, and unexpected, Ennio Morricone-meets-Dick Dale guitar lines. Rather than construct his beats around samples like most modern hip-hop, El composes the majority of his songs around original melodies, using samples more for texture and emphasis, like the sampled sax hits on “Legend Has It” (which were nicked from British prog rock group Gentle Giant), or those dirty-as-hell guitar snaps on album standout “Talk to Me.” And at a time when politicians are doing everything they can to divide us, Run the Jewels are a multiethnic crew enjoying every second of their friendship, which is one of the most infectious things about them. In a brief clip on track “Stay Gold,” Killer Mike can be heard telling his son to say hi to “Uncle El.” Later in the same track, El-P says “Me and Mike, we just think alike and can’t stop high-fiving.” The shared love of what they do comes through on every track they’ve ever released as a group, and RTJ3 is no exception.

Though it may irk progressives when they hear Trump voters say it, there’s definitely something about someone being able to say exactly what you’re thinking. Like when Killer Mike describes the devil so perfectly: “He wore a bad toupee and a spray tan.” Preach!

The group’s early music definitely hews closely to these founding principles. Their last EP, Four Songs, comprises four King-inspired, doowop-infused rock tracks that owe as much to mid-’90s pop punk as they do to mid-’50s Sun Records. But according to Get Married frontman Jaake Margo, there was always another influence swirling around beneath the pompadour grease—glam metal.

“His favorite thing in the world is guitar harmonies, or, as he calls them, ‘guitarmonies,’” Margo says of the band’s lead guitarist and co-founder, Randy Moore. As Margo tells it, Moore’s favorite group growing up was Kiss. “I was never into that.”

These days, though, Margo can abide Moore’s love of dueling guitar leads. And it shows on Get Married’s new EP, Into The Cosmos. Moore shreds on every track—from opener “Dream Boy” to closer “New Neighbor”—infusing the band’s already propulsive sound with an extra, these-go-to-11 kick.

“It gives us the Weezer guitar solos, as opposed to me just playing the blues scales again and again,” Margo says of Moore’s high-flying guitar flourishes. “We’re like Joe Strummer and Mick Jones,” he adds, explaining why the combination of punk and glam works. “We’re the team that makes the crazy shit happen.”

Released late last year, the band will celebrate Into The Cosmos with an official hometown release show at Art Boutiki this Friday. The EP is the band’s second release through Wiretap Records. The band signed with the L.A.-based label over the summer, and Margo says the relationship has already paid dividends.

“We made some really cool connections, which otherwise I wouldn’t have had any idea about,” Margo says, explaining that Wiretap helped the band book several key dates on their most recent nationwide tour.

All of this—plus a strong new lineup—has Margo optimistic about what the future holds for Get Married. “I’m really excited,” he says. “Really cool stuff keeps happening to us. We hope it keeps happening.” —Nick Veronin

I'm a 61-year-old guy who's been married four times. I love the security and acceptance of marriage, but after several years, either my wife du jour or I will get bored, and we’ll agree to move on. Clearly, I like being a husband, but I do a poor job of remaining one. Can I change that? —Chairman Of The Bored So, you just want the security of marriage with all the excitement of dating somebody new—which is kind of like wanting a latex hood and ball gag that are also a comfy old pair of slippers.

Though, no, you can’t have it all, you might manage to have a good bit of it all—the security and the excitement— by bringing in the neurochemistry of the chase when you’re in the cuddlywuddly long-term attachment stage.

This probably sounds complicated, but it’s basically the brain version of how your freezer can serve as both an ice cube manufacturing area and a makeshift morgue for Squeaky the hamster, until you can give him a proper burial.

It turns out that the goo-goo-eyed “Granny and I are still so in luvvv!” and the bug-eyed “Wowee, that’s new and exciting!” can have some brain parts and neurochemicals in common.

Social psychologist Arthur Aron and his colleagues did a brain imaging study of couples who were still passionately in love after being married for 10 to 29 years.

Surprisingly, the results looked a lot like their previous results on couples who’d just fallen madly in love, with intense activity in regions of the brain “associated with reward and motivation.”

The neurotransmitter dopamine is a central player in this reward circuitry.

Though dopamine is still widely known by its outdated nickname, the “pleasure chemical,” current research by neuroscientist Kent Berridge suggests that it doesn’t actually give you a buzz (as opioids in the brain do).

It instead motivates you to do things that might—like eating cake, smoking a doob, and making moves on that girl with the hypno-hooters.

Dopamine-secreting neurons are especially on the alert for what researchers call “novel rewards”—any yummy, sexy, feel-good stuff you haven’t tried before. Neuroscientist Wolfram Schultz finds that “unpredictable rewards” may be even three or four times as exciting to us as those we’re used to.

The problem is, when there’s nothing new on the horizon, there’s no reason for your dopamine to get out of bed. In other words, there’s a neurochemical explanation for why your marriages often go dullsville. But, there’s also good news: Aron and his colleagues note that “if partners experience excitement” from, say, “novel and challenging activities” that they do together, “this shared experience can reignite relationship passion by associating the excitement with the relationship.”

Obviously, these should be unanticipated good experiences—like alternating who plans date night and surprising each other with the week’s event—not having your spouse find you in bed with the cleaning lady.

You might also try to delight your spouse with small, unexpected gestures every day. Ultimately, you should find bringing in surprise much more fun than simply hoping the relationship won’t die—kind of like a paramedic just staring down at a heart attack victim: “Not lookin’ good, dude! Hope you didn’t have any big weekend plans!”

However, especially when our ego is involved, we’re prone to believe the best about people, because of what psychologists call “optimism bias.” This is a form of selecto-vision that leads us to

overestimate that things will turn out wonderfully for us and underestimate the likelihood of our experiencing bad stuff, like being in a flaming car wreck or a flaming car wreck of a relationship. In short, we believe that bad things happen to other people. For example, that cheater we’re in love with is only cheating because the other dude’s such a fuckbuckle, not because she has the ethics of a dust mite.

German alchemist Hennig Brand collected 1,500 gallons of urine from beer-drinkers, then cooked and re-cooked it till it achieved the "consistency of honey." Why? LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): In the documentary movie Catfish, the directors, Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, present a metaphor drawn from the fishing industry. Manhunt in Santa Cruz Mountains recalls beloved travel book

EMORIES COME FROM the strangest places. The recent image of a bank robber fleeing into the Santa Cruz Mountains and the subsequent police manhunt drove me to remember when I first became interested in exploring that same terrain.

As a little kid in the mid-1970s, one of the first travel books I flipped through was a mammoth hardback coffee-table tome called Back Roads of California by Earl Hollander.

Everyone’s parents seemed to own the book, featuring Hollander’s relaxed, genteel pen-and-ink drawings of various locales from the mountain side roads of California, “beyond the subdivisions” as one page quipped.

Hollander drew the scenes and supplied the accompanying anecdotes by hand on every page.

In the pre-Internet era, his Zenlike approach taught me to search outside mainstream paths for inspiration. This was decades before GPS and long before Bay Area Backroads appeared on television.

Naturally, I fixated on the section about the Santa Cruz Mountains.

In retrospect, this was probably the first time I ever learned about the

Almaden Quicksilver Mines, Summit Road, Mountain Charlie Road or the back way over Mount Hamilton to Highway 5. I was way too young to drive, but I worshipped that book. I perused it over and over.

As a kid, I was already fascinated with maps, and one page in the book showed how to depart from Blossom Hill Road—just down the street from where I grew up—and then proceed down Almaden Expressway, to McKean Road, to Uvas, and then into the cold green shadows of the Santa Cruz Mountains. This was back when people still occasionally referred to Almaden Expressway at County Road G8. Hollander’s rustic sketches only made the book more intriguing. I learned that I could explore, travel or embark on a mysterious journey without having to venture great distances. I could be a travel writer in my own backyard.

I always wondered who those kids were. Now I wonder if they’re still alive, or if they ever learned that Hollander immortalized them in his book. In any event, they, like Hollander, inspired me. In grade school, I often felt like I already knew what the teachers were trying to explain, so I grew bored.

I wanted to travel and augment my imagination. As I grew older and began to drive, I developed an intrinsic desire to navigate the ignored streets of my native turf, whether that was the mountains or the awful subdivisions. Again, it felt natural, just like drawing or playing music. I spent a lot of gas money driving around the Santa Cruz Mountains just to find out where the roads went.

By the time I became an adult—if I even qualify, that is—the phrase “off the beaten path” was ingrained in me. It was not some alternative way of traveling. For me, it became a metaphor for many ways in which this column emerges.

In that sense, the original book, Back Roads of California, instilled enough of a traveler’s mentality to eventually generate several columns. For instance, on another page, Hollander wrote about first discovering the history of the notorious Mountain Charlie, as well as the road named after him. This was before the legendary chapter no. 1850 of E Clampus Vitus, a.k.a.

“The Clampers,” were able to erect plaques at various celebrated points of historical interest related to Mountain Charlie. Hollander’s book was the first place I read about this stuff, so, decades later, when infiltrating the Clampers for several columns in this space, I knew what they were talking about. We were kindred spirits.

Those were just a few columns among many that I can trace back to that book. I’m grateful to be an explorer that found a way to write about my experiences. Writing kept me off the criminal path. I don’t need to hold up a Bank of America.

I rob the bank of ideas instead.

UMBLE BEGINNINGS ARE a staple in the food industry, and Tacolicious is a fine example of this allAmerican dream. Getting its start in 2009 as a simple taco stand in San Francisco’s Ferry Plaza Farmers Market, the business, seven years later, now has three locations up north and two restaurants in the South Bay.

When entering the swank new spot at Santana Row, it’s clear this isn’t your typical taqueria, but more of a boutique for “fancy” tacos and other atypical Mexican cuisine. That’s not to say the food is inauthentic. A desire exists to be more like a trendy Mexico City eatery with creative fare.

Tacolicious also has an impressive cocktail selection that boasts more than 120 different tequilas, but seeing as how we were at lunch I decided to stick with a Santa Clara Valley Brewing’s Electric Tower IPA ($7) on tap.

Hoppy, mild and refreshing, it made for an excellent accompaniment to tacos. Speaking of tacos, we ordered the Ten Taco Platter ($39.95), which got us one of every kind, including the Taco of the Week ($1/up-charge).

Fortunately I brought a friend who can keep up with my mass consumption, as the tacos are humongous. I’d wager two or three would put an average appetite to sleep.

One of the first things I noticed is the tortilla itself: thick and chewy with great corn flavor. While not made in-house, they’re delivered daily from the acclaimed Mexicatessen La Palma in San Francisco's Mission District. As for the taco fillings, most were good to very good, but there were a few standouts. The Chicken Mole, in particular, was outstanding; rich, chocolatey and complex—as tasty as any legit Oaxacan restaurant.

The housemade Chorizo was spicy and rich, the Guajillo-braised Brisket had a deep chili flavor and the Baja-style Pacific Cod practically melts in one’s mouth. Special mention should be made of the three brightly colored salsas (habañero, chipotle and avocado-tomatillo) that accompany the tacos. Each one had a distinct flavor and paired well.

The words fancy and Mexican food don’t always go together, but Tacolicious bonds them like kindred spirits.
