Celebrity COO Dysfunction at the Santa Clara Valley Water District prompted departures of upper managers in recent years, most notably in CEO BEAU GOLDIE’s forced retirement. That was after Goldie’s conflicts of interest led ethics chief LEEANN PELHAM to resign, but before the district’s chief administrative officer, JESUS NAVA, left last fall amidst allegations of general creepiness.

After months of searching for Nava’s successor, the district has found a high profile replacement. SUSAN STANTON boasts a 30-year record of public service and a claim to fame as a champion of transgender acceptance. Her decision in 2007 to pursue sex reassignment surgery cost her a city manager job in Largo, Florida, and turned her into something of a celebrity. Details of her dramatic coming-out can be found on her extensive Wikipedia page, which cites 57 references and gives the impression that Stanton has put considerable effort into curating her public profile. These days, Stanton’s name is linked more to public-sector management than the equal rights movement. After helping the Florida town of Lake Worth steer clear of bankruptcy during the Great Recession, she moved on to the Monterey County city of Greenfield, where she bumped up the Standard & Poor’s bond rating from “BB” to a respectable “A-minus.” The water district offered Stanton a $232,502 annual salary to assume the role of chief operating officer of administrative services, which would put her in charge of the district’s $102 million budget and 180 subordinates. The board of directors votes on her hire next week.

Topgolf entertainment complex plans in Alviso drive lawsuits

H

ISTORY SEEMS TO play in a maddening loop for residents of Alviso, the bayside neighborhood that persistently calls for better city services, concessions from developers and enforcement of local laws to little avail. So, they litigate.

When Coyote Creek spilled its banks into Alviso in 1983, victims teamed up with the Federal Emergency Management Agency to sue the city of San Jose, which annexed the town in 1968 in a controversial vote. When unpermitted trucking, cement and other industrial operations kicked up asbestos and flouted zoning laws in the early 1990s, residents sued the companies into

compliance. When the city eschewed an environmental review for a large-scale trucking and manufacturing facility right next to George Mayne Elementary School in 2014, residents sued and settled for close to $1.2 million.

Last week, the pattern repeated itself, stirring longstanding tensions between pro-development forces and residents who worry that their concerns continue to fall on deaf ears. Frustrated by the city approving a golf-themed entertainment complex without an environmental review, local activists once again took their grievance to court.

“It really brings down the morale of the community when time and time again we get that same attitude from the city,” says Mark Espinoza, 42, a native Alvisan and lead plaintiff in the lawsuit. “It’s a slap in the face.”

The complaint, filed in Santa Clara County Superior Court under the aegis of a grassroots group called Organizacion de la Comunidad de Alviso, claims the

Topgolf at Terra project will inundate the quiet neighborhood with traffic and noise. It also accuses the city of skirting the Alviso master plan, a document designed in 1998 to protect the small-town character of the shoreline community. A second lawsuit filed a day later by the Santa Clara Valley Audubon also raises environmental concerns, saying the development would infringe on burrowing owl habitat.

“If you put a project like this into this type of environment, it changes forever,” says Shani Kleinhaus, an environmental advocate for the Audubon Society.

“It changes the landscape from one of beauty, harmony and nature near the Guadalupe River and the bay.”

Topgolf has become a wildly popular franchise for its Dave & Busters-style driving range games. The facilities—about 20 nationwide— include a bar, an on-site restaurant and a multi-level structure with dozens of “hitting bays,” where players swing at microchipped golf balls on a course dotted with large, round netted targets.

The proposal for the 36-acre site off of North First Street includes 110,000 square feet of commercial and retail space, a 200-room hotel and 72,000

“That would destroy Alviso,” says Santos, who sat on the task force that hammered out the Alviso master plan. “Anybody who suggests residential doesn’t have the good of the community at heart.”

Yet Espinoza believes Santos is motivated by self-interest—the family owns property adjacent to the Topgolf site and would financially benefit from the development. And Santos, for his part, questions Espinoza’s motivation and the validity of Organizacion de la Comunidad de Alviso, the group he revived a few years ago to challenge Trammell Crow.

“I used to trust this guy,” Santos says, “but I think now that I might have been naive.”

Bob Gross, who has bought and restored historic properties in the waterfront enclave for decades, says San Jose should reject any development in Alviso that doesn’t uphold the spirit of the master plan. City officials would also do well to consider the fraught relationship it has with Alviso, he adds, and take extra care to honor the interests of the community.

“A decision has to be made wisely,” Gross says. “Not financially, not selfishly. San Jose is too hungry for development. They don’t seem to care what kind it is.”

Mark Wolfe, the attorney representing plaintiffs in the Topgolf lawsuit, considers the city’s fasttracking industrial development in Alviso an unintended consequence of Prop. 13, which starved local governments of property tax revenue.

“We live in the era of the fiscalization of land use,” says Wolfe, who also worked with Espinoza on the Trammell Crow case. “It’s hard for cities to say no to development.”

Espinoza says he has no qualms about new development as long as it’s shaped by the will of the people who have to live with it. If the City Council required an environmental review in the first place, he says, there would have been more chances to demand concessions that temper the impact.

“When we think something is bad for us, they don’t even want to talk about it,” he says. “If they want to build it, they’re going to build it.

They’re not going to listen to us.”

square feet of indoor and outdoor recreation use surrounded by 170-foothigh netting. Terra Hospitality, the developer and landowner, shelled out $32 million for the property and invested $100 million into the project.

“They want to stay open until 2am playing music and serving alcohol,” Espinoza says. “To me, that sounds like a nightclub pretending to be a golf course.”

San Jose’s City Council approved the project in a 9-2 vote last month, despite vocal protests from Espinoza’s group and the Audubon Society. According to City Attorney Rick Doyle, the Planning Department decides what level of environmental review under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) is needed for each project.

For Topgolf, the determination was that a full-scope Environmental Impact Report was unnecessary.

Councilman Lan Diep, who represents District 4, which covers Berryessa, Alviso and parts of north San Jose, was sworn in weeks after the council voted on Topgolf. While CEQA lawsuits are notoriously used to stall development, he said, he doesn’t begrudge residents for taking legal action.

“I’m a lawyer, so litigation doesn’t faze me,” says Diep, who started his career as a public interest attorney helping victims of the Gulf Coast oil spill. “I have great affection for Alviso. It reminds me of New Orleans, where I lived. I know there is this narrative of Alviso being ignored, and there’s some truth to it.”

At the same time, the councilman adds, development is transforming all of Silicon Valley, and Alviso can’t be an island unto itself. Richard Santos, a Santa Clara Valley Water District director and impassioned development supporter whose family has owned land in Alviso for the better part of a century, says Topgolf is the best anyone could hope for for that swath of land.

“It provides jobs,” he says. “It’s walking distance for our community.

It has open spaces. It doesn’t block our school or views. They’ll put in streets and sidewalks because of this.

So it’s a blessing to get this.”

Santos says he supported Espinoza when he filed the lawsuit in 2014 against Trammell Crow, the company that built the 36-acre warehouse and trucking facility across from the elementary school. But this time, the two men fail to see eye to eye, and Santos fears that losing Topgolf would

BY JENNIFER WADSWORTH Rich Tran ignited a mini-media firestorm last month by cribbing President Barack Obama’s historic 2008 election night speech in his first public remarks as mayor of Milpitas. Rather than apologize, Tran told Metro he was proud of his plagiarism and expected a video of his Obama’s speech to go viral “because I’m a millennial.”

In defending himself to a Milpitas Post reporter, he also repurposed some lyrics by Jay Z, one can assume, because he’s a millennial.

But in a call Tuesday, Tran took a much more cautious approach, asking to go off the record before answering a question about the video series he’s launching to sum up each council meeting for constituents.

“Let’s see,” Tran said, sounding uncharacteristically guarded. “I need to be careful about words here.”

Chris Diaz, has urged that kind of caution when it comes to Tran’s written communications, after the new mayor committed several violations of the Brown Act in early January. Tran broke open-meeting laws by sending emails to the entire City Council, as state law requires almost all public business to be done in open session meetings so a majority is not formed behind closed doors.

One of the emails Tran sent included a link to a local news articles with a request for further discussion. At least one other council member, Vice Mayor Marsha Grilli, responded using the “reply all” function, which ostensibly makes her just as guilty of taking part in an online meeting beyond the public scope.

Brown Act violations happen in virtually every public agency, but similar serial communications

have drawn stern warnings from prosecutors in other jurisdictions.

“I take full responsibility,” said Tran, who has since gone through Brown Act training along with his other newly elected colleagues. “I didn’t know it was a violation at the time and there’s been no trend or continuation of wrongdoing.”

None of the emails involved policy discussions, he added, calling the blunder a lesson learned.

“I’m not hiding anything,” Tran said. “My residents know who they elected, and they know that I’m going to learn along the way.”

If anything, Tran insisted, he’s an open book. That’s part of why he’s also producing a documentary about himself.

“It’s about Obama’s legacy and how he inspired the youngest mayor in Silicon Valley to run for office,” Tran said. “I want it to go viral.”

San Jose Mayor Skipping Trump Inauguration San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo will join a notable list of elected officials and celebrities Friday, when he skips Donald Trump’s Inauguration Day ceremony.

In an interview conducted last week—excerpts of which which will be published online at SanJoseInside. com—the mayor noted that he had unexpectedly received an invitation from the inaugural committee for the next president of the United States.

“We originally had plans to stay there for the week and my candidate (Hillary Clinton) didn't win, so I decided to shorten the trip and come back a little earlier,” said Liccardo, who traveled to Washington, D.C., this week to attend a national conference for mayors.

The invite was a surprise considering Trump criticized San Jose’s top elected official and police after violence erupted at his June campaign rally here. The swap of President Sam Liccardo Obama for Trump is one that many people, including Liccardo, are still coming to terms with.

“It's no secret that I'm a big Obama fan,” Liccardo said. “I felt a sense of personal loss, honestly, watching the farewell address. Certainly we'll miss his inspiring words, but even more, I know, I will miss the standard of leadership that he offered for those of us who aspire to lead in any community.

Someone who is incredibly ethical, someone who focuses on how we can lift people up and try to keep our eye on on how we can move forward rather than constantly fighting over whatever happened in the past.”

OOKBOOKS CROWD the lower tier of the bookcase. Above it, colored bowls and greeting cards line the top shelf, along with a solitary, empty Mason jar. There’s a handwritten note in black ink taped to the side of the vessel. A small heart punctuates the phrase, “Self-loathing jar.”

Sitting at a long kitchen table made of blond wood and galvanized steel, author Ayelet Waldman waits for the electric kettle to boil as she completes an online purchase in preparation for the Jan. 21 Women’s March on Washington. She makes two cups of tea—one for herself and one for her husband, Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Michael Chabon, who is sitting in the living room of their Berkeley home, diligently setting up the new flatscreen TV they’ve just purchased as a surprise for their four children.

Chabon can hear every word his wife says as she begins to explain the new drug regimen she’s on to help stabilize her moods.

Waldman occasionally stops, listening to see if she can discern her husband’s thoughts from the tense silence punctuating the breaks in conversation. Before trying this new treatment—the latest in a litany of pharmaceuticals and therapy sessions—she’d sampled “a shit-ton of drugs.” Waldman has been prescribed selective serotonin

reuptake inhibitors, like Prozac and Lexapro; mood stabilizers, like Lamictal and Topamax; amphetamines, like Adderall; and benzodiazepines, including Xanax and Valium. Some of these worked for a time, she says. Others didn’t. All had side effects.

So she dropped acid.

“This morning I took LSD,” Waldman writes in the opening line of her new book, A Really Good Day, the latest in a long line of fiction and nonfiction works. What at first scans

GOOD TRIP Microdosing on LSD helped author Ayelet Waldman find the peace that therapy and FDA-approved drugs could not provide. as a run-of-the-mill scene of upper middle class ennui feels much less ordinary in Waldman’s world.

The Jar It’s important to note: Waldman didn’t take an acid trip in Muir Woods in the naive hope of opening up a third eye and chasing away all personal demons in one fell swoop. Nor did she score on Haight Street after chasing down a dreadheaded shaman. And she certainly

doesn’t recommend taking the drug recreationally. The DEA still classifies lysergic acid diethylamide, or LSD, as a Schedule I drug—meaning that since it was banned in California in 1966, the agency recognizes no medical applications for the substance and has determined that it has a high potential for abuse.

In her warm, brightly lit kitchen, Waldman says she received her LSD in the mail from a trusted but anonymous source, and only took “microdoses” of the drug, all while

adhering to a strict 30-day, doctorsupervised regimen.

As she details in her book— subtitled How Microdosing Made a Mega Difference in My Mood, My Marriage, and My Life—a microdose is “a subtherapeutic dose of a drug administered at a quantity low enough to elicit no adverse side effects yet high enough for a measurable cellular response.” It’s approximately one-tenth of a regular dose.

Waldman found her way to this alternative treatment by way of the

self-loathing jar—and only after nothing else seemed to work.

“That’s my biggest problem,” she says, referring to the jar, which her daughter made for her. “When I make a comment that evinces self-loathing, I have to pay the jar.

It goes to my two younger kids and they can spend it however they want. They did it just because they wanted money.”

that. Waldman has a propensity to put herself down—hard. And her gloom and mood manifested in other ways as well. In her book, she roots around in her own psyche in order to contend with the problem, a detective in search of her better self: “I found myself in a state of seemingly perpetual irritability.

I seethed, I turned that fury on the people around me, and then I collapsed in shame at my outbursts.”

The “vicissitudes of her moods” are closely scrutinized throughout the length of her narrative.

Waldman is a keen chronicler of her own struggles and failings, which seem beyond her control to adjust or modulate without the help of “hundreds of hours in the offices of psychiatrists and psychologists” and a heavy scoop of prescription drugs.

One diagnosis of bipolar disorder was countermanded by a new doctor to PMDD, or premenstrual dysphoric disorder, “a severe,

sometimes disabling extension of premenstrual syndrome (PMS).”

Seeking alternatives, she came upon the work of a Stanford psychologist with decades of experience researching the therapeutic potential of psychedelics.

The Decision Waldman does not suggest that LSD is the ultimate panacea we’ve all been looking for—some version of, say, Aldous Huxley’s soma—but her book does cite evidence for the psychedelic drug’s potential to help suffering minds. If, that is, the drug is taken under a controlled set of circumstances like the one she chronicles: a 30 day protocol designed by Dr. James Fadiman, author of The Psychedelic Explorer's Guide: Safe, Therapeutic, and Sacred Journeys.

It was Fadiman’s collected reports from microdosers, and his

conclusions from their anecdotal accounts, which convinced Waldman to try the drug. The title of her book is borrowed from his summation of the people “who experimented with regular microdosing of LSD and psilocybin.” He concluded: “What many people are reporting is, at the end of the day, they say, ‘That was a really good day.’”

Waldman writes with a certain amount of longing about obtaining the same peace of mind Fadiman’s subjects found. “A really good day. Predictably, regularly, unexceptionally. That is all I ever wanted.” Taking her at her word, it’s rather heartbreaking that something so basic has been well beyond her reach.

Dropping acid was not easy an easy choice for Waldman.

Her decision to write about her experiences, warts and all, may have been even more difficult—as evinced by the sidelong glances she

sometimes gives to the TV room, where Chabon continues to occupy himself with the new flatscreen.

As a Harvard Law School graduate, she was initially reluctant to even consider taking an illegal substance: “For many years,” she writes, “I taught a seminar called The Legal and Social Implication of the War on Drugs at the UC Berkeley School of Law, and was a consultant to the Drug Policy Alliance, an organization dedicated to the reform of U.S. drug laws.”

Openly discussing her decision would also mean considerations would need to be made for her roles as a mother, respected author and public figure.

“I didn't necessarily know that I would have the courage to publish the book or that my family would allow me to,” she says. “I make a rule not to publish things about my

family unless they pre-vet it.”

In her prologue , Waldman weighs—with a great deal of carefully won irony—her former career as a federal public defender against her decision to take LSD. Her scrupulous approach to the substance in question, at times, sounds like a brief for the federal courts, as well as the court of public opinion.

The book’s strength, however, its verve, derives from Waldman’s forthright account of her personal struggles: “My emotional pain is the very reason I started down this path.”

In person, as on the page, whatever preconceptions the reader may have of Waldman’s occasionally embattled public persona, it’s impossible not to sympathize with her intimate accounting of her years with incurable pain.

A Really Good Day isn’t a pamphlet for Burning Man neophytes. It’s the story of one woman’s search for relief from physical and psychological pain.

She proffers countless anecdotes and details about her suffering and the ensuing damage that undermined the stability of her marriage and family life.

Over the course of a 30-day microdosing regimen, Waldman certainly found her share of really good days. She also experienced a phenomenon that creatives everywhere crave: flow. She wrote her new book during and after the microdosing experience.

“That is the effect that I am absolutely sure was—that I think I can fairly confidently credit to [the LSD],” she says. “That focus was very similar to stimulant drugs like Adderall or Ritalin, but without that irritability, without the crash. I had a prescription for [Adderall], but very quickly, within a couple of days, decided I didn't want to take them because they made me feel so crappy.”

Waldman wonders several times in the book if she’s actually ingesting the drug at all, if her intention to become less irritable, to have better days, is simply imagined: “It’s been over a week now, and either this experiment is working or the placebo effect is a mighty force.” But there appears to be science to support Waldman’s personal experiences.

On the fifth day of her protocol, Waldman reached out to a psychopharmacologist as well as a

psychiatric researcher to find out how the microdoses of LSD might be helping her flow. The former talked about a gene known as brain-derived neurotrophic factor, BDNF; the latter about glutamate.

“Psychedelics,” she writes, “enhance neuroplasticity, the ability of the brain to grow and change, by increasing the level of BDNF in the brain and by increasing glutamate activity.”

The Flow Instead of falling into the kind of “hellish introspective nightmare” that Hunter S. Thompson references in one particularly uproarious chapter in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Waldman found, through her microdosing, the peace of mind she feels she needs to live a happy, healthy life. And instead of the relief that comes to so many wigged-out psychonauts after the walls stop breathing, now that her term of microdosing has ended, she fears what the future holds for her mental state.

Her writing now is “more of an effort. Focus is hard to come by. You have to really drag yourself to your desk. Some days are great. Some days are amazing. Some days are not.”

How LSD Saved One Woman's Marriage is just one recent book review headline in The New York Times, suggesting that Waldman had won the decades’ long war with herself after just the 30-day protocol. “Saved,” however, denotes past tense, meaning problem solved. Unfortunately for Waldman, her years of psychological pain did not simply evaporate at the drop of a microdose.

And now that her brief journey has concluded, she has concerns.

“I have a real feeling of loss for sure,” Waldman says. “I think my whole family does.” In this moment, she looks away from the kitchen table, toward the living room. A pronounced hush glares back.

There’s an underlying feeling of melancholy as Waldman discusses her current state of mind without legal access to the microdoses: “If it were legal somewhere, I would probably move my family there because the difference was so astonishing,” she says. “The amount

The Hope From the opening pages of A Really Good Day, Waldman develops a cogent argument for the legalization of further clinical studies into LSD’s effects on the brain—but never for the legalization of the drug for recreational use. Waldman confirms this idea explicitly: “I'm just not interested in recreational drug use.

The drug use that I have engaged in has been very consciously and purposely therapeutic rather than recreational.”

Although her children spent the

money from the “Self-loathing jar,” they must have made it out of concern and care for their mother. When she offers their testimony in the book, that during the protocol they’re noticing a lighter, more playful, less stressed-out mom, we trust their account.

It’s reason enough to believe that, despite Waldman’s legitimate doubts and fears about microdosing, the risk was worth it for her and her family. Even if the relief was only temporary, that glimpse of hopefulness, that her moods could stabilize and change, appears to be sustaining her.

Ron Campbell looks back on a lifetime of cartooning

ALEID GALLERY’s newest show will be a unique and inimitable trip down an animated memory lane.

With work by legendary animator and artist Ron Campbell, the “Cartoon Pop Art Show” will feature more than fifty original pieces of art inspired by the countless cartoons Campbell had a hand in animating—most notably The Beatles’ classic film Yellow Submarine.

Born in 1937 in Seymour, Australia, Campbell’s love of animation began at an early age. After going to the Saturday afternoon movies as a kid

and being awestruck by the children’s animated reel between features, Campbell assumed the process was some kind of magic—until he asked his grandmother.

“I thought there was a real cat and real mouse being projected somehow from the back of the screen,” he recalls. “And my grandmother said, ‘No, no, Ron, they are actually just drawings.’”

To a 7-year-old Campbell, this was something of an epiphany.

“Drawings? You mean if I do a whole bunch of drawings they can come alive?” he says. “And I sort of became obsessed with that notion for most of my childhood.”

Campbell knew, even at that early age, that making drawings come to life was what he wanted to do—going so far as to make his own paper

animation contraption akin to a rudimentary zoetrope.

Where others lost interest, Campbell continued drawing into adulthood, working through a degree at Melbourne’s Swinburne institute, graduating just in time to meet the sudden demand for animation in Australia’s emerging television industry.

After connecting with Australian animators, and eventually Yellow Submarine producer Al Brodax, Campbell’s work was known enough that he landed positions with HannaBarbera and other noted American production companies. He moved to the States and the rest is history.

Over the course of his 50 year career, Campbell worked on countless shows and features— Beetle Bailey, Scooby Doo, The Jetsons, Sesame Street, Rugrats, Rocket Power, and Ed, Edd, n Eddy—to name a few—and subsequently has had a direct or indirect hand in informing the childhood aesthetic of three generations of viewers.

Regarded in the industry as a master animator and storyboarder, to the public Campbell is best known for his animation work for The Beatles, first with The Cartoon Beatles television program in 1965 then the hugely successful, genre-defining 1968 animated film Yellow Submarine.

His work has resulted in considerable recognition and numerous accolades. Individual episodes of shows Big Blue Marble and The Smurfs earned him and his production company, Ron Campbell Films Inc., a Peabody Award and Emmy for best children’s show of the year, respectively.

Partly inspired by the famed animator Chuck Jones’ paintings of Looney Tunes and Tom and Jerry, upon retirement Campbell decided to try his hand at recreating his old cartoons.

Working primarily in pen, pencil and watercolor, Campbell’s paintings in the “Cartoon Pop Art Show” are vibrant living memories. Not reproductions nor animated cells, Campbell’s art is a connection to the past through a living hand. He also paints with the express purpose of recreating how cartoons would look on a screen, giving his work an extradimensional sense.

And while Campbell is arguably one of the most famous living animators, he’s quick to downplay his role in the grand scheme of things. “When I look back, I feel lucky to have had so many friends who were so talented,” he says.

“I fear sometimes that I am taking too much credit when there were so many people involved in these cartoons.”

Nevertheless, Ron Campbell is one of the last of his generation of animators and cartoon artists and understands the special sense of memory his work generates in the viewer. A special feature of show will be Campbell in person creating his drawings.

“You can’t compare my paintings to Botticelli, I’ll tell you that,” Campbell says with a laugh. “But I think what’s important is that I am providing a nostalgic connection to people’s childhoods.”

Loco Parentis NEW WAVE NAIVETE It’s the best of times and it’s the worst of times in Mike Mills’ best film yet, ‘20th Century Women.’

Potent nostalgia, choice needle drops carry ‘20th Century Women’

T

HERE IS WEIGHT in the charming 20th Century Women— seriousness that keeps it from blowing away like a load of Styrofoam peanuts in the wind. That weight comes from the realization of how remote the seemingly near past actually is.

Mike Mills’ third and best film (after Beginners and Thumbsucker) is also the closest to his models in the French New Wave. This fictionalized memoir recalls Louis Malle, the least radical of that assemblage of 1960s French filmmakers, and the one who

turned out to have the warmest and longest view of all of them. Mills’ Beginners was a memorial to a father who came out of the closet in his 70s. 20th Century Women honors Mills’ mother as a woman whose life was bounded by the last century.

The title isn’t too lofty: the film commemorates the time’s ideals, fascinations and naivete.

Spanning 1978-79, the story centers on Dorothea (Annette Bening). She owns an old, shambling, stuffed-with-ferns house in Santa Barbara. The place is being rebuilt by a gentle hippie handyman William (Billy Crudup). Her son, Jamie (Lucas Jade Zumann), has an easy time in school. While he’s occasionally bullied—the target of homophobic

slurs, due to his interests in art and the Talking Heads—his life can be symbolized by the long, lazy slaloms he carves on his skateboard down the live-oak-covered hills.

Boy children in single-mother homes used to be fretted over— without a paternal model, surely they’d turn gay? What one loves about 20th Century Women is that the movie takes the opposite pole, insisting that a young man can learn a lot from hanging around women.

Jamie has a sleepover pal Julie (Elle Fanning) who isn’t interested in him sexually. She gives him lessons to make him cool, and advice like, “Guys aren’t supposed to think about what they look like.”

Jamie is also friendly with the twenty-something lodger, Abbie.

She’s played by the delightfully gawky Greta Gerwig, in brick-red hennaed hair. Gerwig here is not going to cure anybody’s Greta Gerwig crush. In this telling, Abbie is the patient zero of punk rock in

Santa Barbara, a student in NYC who had to come back West with her LPs after a medical crisis. Punk and a little bit of psychedelics bring a new wave of possibilities, opening a small window of liberation before Santa Barbara-area man Ronald Reagan arrives to slam it all shut.

The movie earns its needle drops: Talking Heads, DEVO, the Buzzcocks and The Clash. Inadvertently, Mills ends up commemorating the death of Bowie—who passed after filming wrapped— through the use of “DJ,” a Berlin-era track that didn’t get overplayed when the musician died last year.

Mills, a rock video director turned feature filmmaker, is far less precious than he’s been in previous work.

You’ll remember his Oscar-winning Beginners (2011): that was the one where the dog talked and Melanie Laurent didn’t. Mills still has an eye on pets: one sidebar in 20th Century Women is about a pair of pet zebra finches, birds that are said to die of broken hearts if their mates perish.

(I’ve heard that said about them, but my finches have always been more pragmatic—they muddle through tragedy, just like the rest of us.) Mostly the film is sweet on the past, in this transition from hippie twilight to the kind-of-sort-of dancing at punk rock clubs. And the film is stitched with shots of a VW beetle sailing down coastal highways, leaving streaks behind it, like the blur on the figures in a disintegrating VHS tape.

It’s a bit of special effects indicating that the passengers in the car are stoned and on their way to fun.

Dorothea is a role that gives Bening a chance to display brittleness and authority, some grain and some rind.

The film breaks the frame so much that there’s barely a frame to remind us of the air of that time. Godardwise, it quotes from texts as different as “Our Bodies, Ourselves”, Judy Blume’s novels and President Jimmy Carter’s malaise speech. It may not be the movie about the cusp of the ’70s and the ’80s, but it gets so much so right that it’s immersive: a bittersweet reminder of a lost world.

Easy Skankin’ DOUBLE SHOT Latin influences and a DIY approach have helped Cafe Con Tequila find success.

LEVEN YEARS AGO, the ska scene in the Lincoln Heights neighborhood of East Los Angeles was nonexistent.

And so, when drummer Francisco Rodriguez and guitarist Luis Fematt formed Cafe Con Tequila, they had few expectations. They just wanted to pay homage to the sounds of their youth.

“We all grew up listening to bands like No Doubt and Sublime, but

there weren’t any bands in our area that played ska or reggae,” Rodriguez explains. “And that’s pretty much how it started—with an idea to start something, bring new music to our area and hope that people liked it.”

Their plan worked—and then some.

According to Rodriguez, his band not only found success with their formula, they helped rekindle interest in a sound that had largely faded in popularity after its late-’90s heyday.

“I guess you can say we inspired people to start their own projects, and many of the bands that started after us have been successful,” Rodriguez says, noting the halfdozen or so ska bands that grew out of Lincoln Heights alone in the

decade following the launch of Cafe Con Tequila. “But nobody took it to the next level like we did, and it worked out for us: We’ve gotten so many opportunities to play big shows and events over the years because we were leading it all.”

He says Cafe Con Tequila’s Latin flair and DIY approach were integral components to their rise.

Rodriguez and Fematt first resolved to emulate their SoCal ska-punk idols in 2005, while in their high school’s band class. Blending a wide variety of musical genres—from reggae to metal to punk—with Latin rhythms, the pair began crafting a distinct sound, which would ultimately form the foundation of Cafe Con Tequila.

The trademark staccato rhythms of ska and reggae merge with vocalist Gilbert Ascenscio’s fluid English and Spanish vocals, which further contrast with the frenetic and fastpaced chorus of brass instruments

that weave in and out of Cafe Con Tequila’s tracks.

Cafe Con Tequila return to their DIY roots this weekend, when they play a house show—their first in five years—on San Jose’s East Side.

Local ska bands Bangalore and Fulminante open.

The nine-piece lineup, consisting of drummer John Vallejo, bassist Angel Rodriguez, trombonist Josie Quintanilla, saxophonist Juan Lopes, trumpet players Crystal Campos and Victor Venegas, plus Rodriguez, Fematt and Ascencio, will perform a range of songs from their decade-long career, including standouts like “Buskando” and “Conejo” from their eponymous 2014 release.

Drummer Rodriguez explains that the band took the chance to play the one-off house show because they’ve never played in San Jose before. “We thought we should give the house show a shot since it’ll be a great opportunity to play somewhere new and share our music with a different crowd,” he says, adding that the band hopes their San Jose show will be the first of many more performances in the coming year. With only one full-length release in their discography, the band anticipates recording a new album in the next few months, and are aiming for a release date in late 2017.

“We really want to take our time, but a new album is in the works,” Rodriguez says. “We have the music, the ideas, all our stuff written down, so it’s just a matter of getting the time to get it all together.”

Getting things together may seem like a challenge for a band with nine members, but Cafe Con Tequila has boiled the songwriting process down to three key members— vocalist Ascencio, lead guitarist Fernatt and drummer Rodriguez— who work on the “writing and rhythm” for each song before the rest of the group gives their input.

“Everyone has the opportunity to bring new ideas to the table and put their own touches on the music,” Rodriguez says. “That’s worked for us since we started, but I try to keep the process open to changes and new ideas.”

Ageless Aggression OSTENSIBLY A NOISE rock band, No Age write surprisingly melodic songs that incorporate enough dissonance and non-traditional rock drumming to avoid falling comfortably into any real category. Punk? Not really. Noise? At times. Rock? Sure—there are guitar and drums, after all. But really, No Age is a band mostly defined by what they are not. And that’s a lot of things.

Which is not to say that the L.A. duo don’t have contemporaries. They share the droney vocals and ’verbed-out psychedelia of Eat Skull; the love of repetition and experimentation of Deerhunter. If anything, No Age are a product of the deep uncertainty of rock music in the mid-2000s—a time that seems to have permanently fried the circuits of all major rock radio and label output.

No Age No Age’s debut for SubPop, 2008’s Nouns, was quickly Jan 24 celebrated by music journalists for its mix of energy, 8:30pm, $15 melody, and noise. 2010’s follow-up, Everything in The Catalyst, Between, can be seen as something of a mission statement Santa Cruz from the band that exists between most genres and contains some of their best songs to date (notably the excellent closer “Chem Trails”).

And with their last release being 2013’s An Object it’s been a little while since we’ve heard from guitarist Randy Randall and drummer-vocalist Dean Allen Spunt. That album saw an increase in tension, and a decrease in catharsis, leading Pitchfork to describe the album as brimming with “potential rock songs denied everything they need to actually rock.”

If An Object is at all dynamic, it is so through sheer addition and subtraction: the skeletal songs add parts over parts until everything becomes awash in buzzy guitars. And though An Object’s lack of clear choruses and moments of atonal “soloing” only draws further comparison to New Zealand’s psychedelia-loving Eat Skull, it is still very much a No Age album.

All of this makes now an interesting time to see the band. The most recent interview with either member found guitarist Randall waxing rhapsodic on family, with births and deaths happening in the lives of both members.

No Age has always been a live band, and Randall recently collaborated with the legendary avant gardist Glenn Branca, which is sure to have only further stirred the pot of creative influences. On tour between albums, with no definite plan for a new record anytime soon, now is just as mercurial a time as when the band began. No Age, indeed. —Mike Huguenor

Two of my girlfriends just got divorced. Both recently admitted to me that they knew they shouldn’t have gotten married at the time but did anyway. Just this weekend, another friend—married for only a year and fighting bitterly with her husband—also said she knew she was making a mistake before her wedding. Can you explain why anyone would go through with something as serious and binding as marriage if they have reservations?—Confused Consider that in most areas of life, when you’re making a colossal mistake, nobody is all, “Hey, how about a coronation-style party, a Caribbean cruise, and a brand new-blender?”

But it isn’t just the allure of the star treatment and wedding swag that leads somebody to shove their doubts aside and proceed down the aisle. Other influences include parental pressure, having lots of married or marrying friends, being sick of dating, and feeling really bad about guests with nonrefundable airline tickets.

There’s also the notion that “marriage takes work”—meaning you can just put in a little emotional elbow grease and you’ll stop hating your spouse for being cheap, bad in bed and chewing like a squirrel.

However, it also helps to look at how we make decisions—and how much of our reasoning would more accurately be called “emotioning.” We have a powerful aversion to loss and to admitting we were wrong, and this can cause us to succumb to the “sunk-cost effect.” Sunk costs are investments we’ve already made—of time, money or effort. The sunk-cost effect is decision researcher Hal Arkes’ term for our tendency to—irrationally, ego-servingly— keep throwing time, money or effort into something based on what we’ve already put in. Of course, our original investment

is gone. The rational approach would be to decide whether to keep investing on things likely to pay off in the future.

A way to avoid that trap is through what psychologists call “prefactual thinking”—thinking out the possible outcomes before you commit to some risky course of action. Basically, you play the role of a pessimistic accountant and imagine all the ways your plan could drag you straight down the crapper.

But don’t just imagine all the awful things that could happen. Write out a list—a detailed list. So, for example, if you sense you could be making a mistake by getting married, don’t go all shortcutty, like “get divorced!” Parse out the ittybitties, like “figure out how the hell to find a decent divorce lawyer”; “get lost on the way to the lawyer’s office and stand on the side of the road weeping”; and “start working as the indentured servant of a bunch of sorority girls to pay the lawyer’s retainer.” Yeah, that kind of detail.

Making potential losses concrete like this helps you weigh current costs against the future ones. This, in turn, could help you admit that you and your not-entirelybeloved might have a real shot at happily ever after—if only the one of you in the big white dress would bolt out the fire exit instead of walking down the aisle.

I don’t want to ghost them if they start getting attached, but saying from the get-go that I just want something casual seems rude and a bit presumptuous.—Conflicted Not everybody likes to spoon after sex. You like to slip out of the house without being noticed.

It isn’t presumptuous to explain “from the get-go” that you aren’t ready for anything serious; it’s the right thing to do. Lay that out in your online profile (or at least in your first conversation) so women are clear that you’re an aspiring sexfriend, not an aspiring boyfriend. Consider, however, that research by anthropologist John Marshall Townsend finds that even women who are sure that casual sex is

all they’re looking for can get clingy afterward—to their great surprise.

Townsend explains that women’s emotions evolved to “act as an alarm system that urges women to test and evaluate investment and remedy deficiencies even when they try to be indifferent to investment.”

Ghosting—just disappearing on somebody you’re dating, with no explanation—is dignity-shredding. If a woman does end up wanting more than you can give, you need to do the adult thing and tell her you’re ending it.

Lawless arts space WORKS/San Jose celebrates 40th anniversary

HIS YEAR MARKS the 40th anniversary for WORKS/San Jose gallery, an allvolunteer alternative arts space. Entrenched in the eastern side of the San Jose McEnery Convention Center, the gallery celebrates a long, twisted history of continuous relocation woes after moving through six downtown locations in four decades.

A microcosm of San Jose’s urban redevelopment saga, the WORKS story is a unique testament to how the alternative arts can survive

endless cycles of creation and destruction at the hands of greedy real estate operatives and the city planners that love them. It isn't quite David versus Goliath, but it’s close.

In 1977, an adventurous group of artists and San Jose State University professors were dismayed at the more mainstream direction of the San Jose Museum of Art, so they wanted to create a community-based art gallery, a place for cutting-edge visual art, dance, performance, avant-garde books, music and whatever else came along. Most important, they wanted the venue to be democratic, with no centralized leadership, a true community-based experimental arts space. No such venue in San Jose existed at the time.

Soon enough, the group discovered an abandoned building at Vine and Auzerais, transforming the structure

into San Jose’s first alternative arts gallery and debuting in October 1977. In the punk spirit of the era, the artists did it themselves. In a statement with ripple effects to this day, Tony May, one of the original protagonists, would later famously recall: “We just thought San Jose would be less embarrassing if it had an art gallery.”

Of the Vine and Auzerais location, another original protagonist, Jim Thomas, would later write: “The place was a wreck.

Yet a bunch of energetic artists, all ersatz carpenters and house painters and too naive to realize what the hell they were getting into, still had the power to transform it.”

Unfortunately, the space only lasted eight years. San Jose politicians wanted a convention center more than they wanted an art gallery, so the city eventually slaughtered the entire residential neighborhood around Vine and Auzerais in order to create what’s now two lanes of Almaden

Boulevard. The intersection of Vine and Auzerais is long gone.

As a result, WORKS moved into the rundown Leticia Building at 66 S. First St. for the last half of the ’80s. Their rent was $400.

At the time, much of downtown was still a war zone of boarded-up storefronts and nefarious activity. As light rail construction tore up the neighborhood, putting retailers out of business left and right, WORKS thrived with punk shows, edgy visual art, performances and other hijinks. It was a fantastic urban space.

Mark Pauline, of Survival Research Laboratories, even showed up one year to present a lecture and video documentation. Unfortunately, 66 S. First St. was an unreinforced masonry structure, legally uninhabitable after the Loma Prieta earthquake, so the artists were once again forced to relocate.

Enter Japantown. A corrugated metal warehouse at southeast corner of Sixth and Jackson became WORKS’ new home for the next six years.

Several legendary troublemakers showed up to do gigs here, including world-renowned body-modification maestro Fakir Musafar. Unfortunately, San Jose history began to repeat itself and the building was demolished in favor of lifeless, uniform housing.

However, WORKS was not deterred. In 1997, the gallery moved into the Sperry Flour Building at 30 N. Third St., where it thrived more than ever, that is, until the real estate operatives again came calling. In the early 2000s, WORKS again found itself without a home.

After a brief, disastrous stint on South First Street, WORKS opened its current location at 365 S. Market just a few years ago, bringing everything full circle in cosmic fashion. Now it sits exactly on the opposite side of the Convention Center from the original defunct location at Vine and Auzerais.

As a result, much of what has transpired in downtown San Jose— when it comes to arts spaces battling the dark forces of gentrification over the last several decades—can be traced back to the pioneering avantgarde spirit embodied by the original WORKS protagonists. San Jose is much less embarrassing thanks to what they invented. Look for official 40th anniversary celebrations to unfold at WORKS later this year.

Other than the obvious spherical reference, the only logical consideration would be Morgan Hill’s newest restaurant, House of Meatball (HOM), which just so happens to be right next door to the beloved Morgan Hill Bowl.

As the name suggests, HOM’s specialty is seasoned balls of carnivorous delight—these tasty treats actually get their origins from the Middle East, despite what most Italians will claim. HOM prides itself on serving up free-range chicken, pasture-raised beef and organic veggies, as well as making most of their dishes and ingredients in-house.

The menu is straightforward and features either a Build-Your-Own Meatball option ($6.99), or the “Fixed Ballers” preset combos ($9.99).

HOM falls into the fast-casual dining genre, so the first stop will be the counter. I decided to forgo any thinking on my visit and just went with their Traditional Italian Tomato with Creamy Polenta and a side of housemade bread ($3.99).

The bread is served up warm and steamy, with a side of rich cheese sauce. It was so dense yet pillowy that you could’ve made a meal from the bread alone. The polenta was soft, creamy and had a nice hint of aged parmesan to boost the flavor. It also comes with three ample pork meatballs that were tender, juicy and had a hint of spicy pepper.

The red sauce really helped raise the dish with a clean tomato flavor that wasn’t overly seasoned with herbs. HOM’s dishes appear to be small in stature, but what they lack in size they more than make up for in substance and quality.

I was pretty full at this point, so I decided to end the meal with a walnut brownie sundae ($4.99)—and I’m glad I did. The brownie comes out piping hot, topped with a giant scoop of velvety vanilla ice cream and drizzled with some caramel. The brownie had a deep chocolate flavor that wasn’t overly sweet, and the molten gooey center mixed with the ice cream was heavenly. It was a decadent finish to a great meal.

HOM has two more locations in the works (San Jose and Campbell) that are set to open up sometime later this year. “I like to stay low-key,” says El Culichi VIP’s owner, Jorge, who refused to provide his full name. “I want it to be all about the food.”

Though there are numerous seafood restaurants in Silicon Valley, El Culichi VIP is probably the only one that serves ceviche, carne asada tacos and Sinaloa-style sushi rolls. The rolls can consist of a combination of shrimp, crab, beef, bacon or chicken topped with cheese or avocado.

The idea of adding additional ingredients to the Japanese original appeared due to the weather conditions in Mexico.

“What happened was that in Sinaloa, Japanese-style Sushi was introduced and quickly became a craze,” Jorge says. “It’s very hot over there, so a lot of the time seafood would go bad, and so they said, ‘What are we going to do? Cook everything.’”

The house specialty is the Guamuchilito ($13.50), a fried sushi roll that features crab, cream cheese and avocado on the inside and is topped with tampico paste and avocado. The most expensive dish, Parrillada de Mariscos, is listed at $45.99 but serves four people. The platter includes shrimp, octopus and abalone in red salsa on a bed of Caribbean rice with prawns and fish filet.

Though the restaurant has a family friendly vibe, it also has a lively environment that should do well with the happy hour and late-night crowd. Perdidos de Sinaloa performed on the restaurant’s opening day, and since then Alto Rango and Banda La Unica have played live music for shows running Friday through Monday.

Though the brand may be well known, El Culichi VIP is not a part of a chain, according to its owner. “This is Culichi VIP, the others are Culichi Town—they are two different things,” Jorge says. “We carry the same gastronomy, since we both originate from Sinaloa, we have the same concept, but they are very strong in LA, we want to be strong here in the Bay Area.
