The week before Christmas is always hectic, and this year was no different. What to buy, where to buy, which route to take, getting gas to get there in the first place.

The pumps at the station were having problems, so people were driving in and backing out in chaos. The barrel in the back of my truck blocked my view, so I didn't see the red GMC station wagon behind me and thumped it with my bumper. I rushed over, anguished and apologetic, and I pointed out a scrape on the other car’s fender.

The lady inspected the side of her vehicle and said, “Oh, no. I did that before. I don't see any damage at all.” She looked at me and smiled.

“Merry Christmas, and God bless you.” I returned the heartfelt salutation and we hugged before filling up our tanks amidst the turmoil of cars. Thank you, gentle lady.

Back in Action A brief mention in a local paper this past week made it sound like one of the South Bay’s leading LGBT organizations is on its last leg. The 32-year-old Bay Area Municipal Elections Committee—called BAYMEC for short—endorsed no candidates and hosted no fundraising gala in 2016, Bay Area Reporter columnist MATTHEW S. BAJKO wrote. BAYMEC President JAMES GONZALES hadn’t even returned his calls all year, Bajko added. On BAYMEC’s website, the most recent endorsements listed are from 2014 and the most recent press release from 2015.

“We were kind of a little muted this year,” Gonzales says, adding that the group lost some momentum after landmark successes like same-sex marriage legalization. Unfortunately, BAYMEC also lost more than half its board members.

Santa Clara County Public Defender MOLLY O’NEAL, state legislative aide TIM OROZCO, county employees TONY FILICE and JEFFREY CARDENAS, transgender activist MARK HAJDUK and MITCHELL NELSON, former aide to BAYMEC founder and county Supervisor KEN YEAGER, have all left. Another board member, Hajduk’s brother STAN HAJDUK, died this past fall. “But we weren’t completely dormant,” Gonzales says. San Jose’s District 2 council race prompted BAYMEC to speak out against STEVE BROWN, who publicly stated that religious freedom should allow businesses to turn away customers suspected of being gay. Brown lost to Councilman SERGIO JIMENEZ, which BAYMEC considers an important victory in 2016. After a relatively inactive year, however, BAYMEC plans to rally the troops for battle and fill every board vacancy in 2017. “We’re getting ready for the unknown,” Gonzales says. “We’re doing a lot of recruitment now.”

SoFA Rising CUSH CLUB Residents of San Jose’s SoFA District will pay top dollar to live in chic new high-rises, but local artists and entrepreneurs worry they’ll soon be priced out.

Can SoFA District’s resurgent arts scene survive influx of luxury condos?

T THE FAR end of downtown San Jose’s SoFA district, where South First Street meets Market, a new experiment in luxury housing is underway.

“Live Artfully,” advises the marketing website for a brand new seven-story, 232-unit apartment building known as The Pierce. After scrolling through images of young, multiethnic hypothetical tenants posing with aviator sunglasses, toy dogs or guitars, the sticker shock sets in: $2,615 to $4,485 a month, though that includes art and amenities.

“We’ve got a quarterly rotating art installation,” says Jeff Smith, senior vice

president of residential for developer Sares Regis Group of Northern California. “We’ve got this incredible pool and club room, a screening room, a rooftop deck, a bike shop.”

If all goes according to plan with The Pierce and three other large market rate apartment projects planned for SoFA, a total of nearly 900 new high-end homes could be coming to the roughly eight-block area. Also on the horizon are earlier-stage proposals, like a massive set of twin towers on the old Valley Title site and the redevelopment of the former Emile's restaurant. It’s an appealing prospect for the recent crop of hospitality businesses that have opened nearby, like SoFA Market, the Continental, Tac-Oh! and several others in the works.

Where exactly that leaves the art galleries, nonprofits, nightclubs, design firms and small businesses that have lent the area its cultural currency through distinctive murals and frequent events, however, is unclear.

“We do see that our neighborhood is

at risk of not truly being an arts district if people are priced out,” says Anjee Helstrup-Alvarez, executive director of Movimiento de Arte y Cultura Latino Americana, or MACLA. “It’s looking at how can you hustle?”

MACLA, the San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles, and the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art have all managed to buy their otherwise prohibitively expensive buildings, though those transactions required years of drawn-out financial and political gymnastics. In the meantime, the downtown arts district saw the end of the experimental Zero1 Garage, and the city-owned building that houses contemporary gallery Anno Domini is also slated to go up for sale, according to records for the successor to the city’s now-defunct redevelopment agency.

During recent weeks, anxiety about how to contend with rising costs of both housing and studio space has also been compounded by the Ghost Ship warehouse fire in Oakland, which killed three dozen people at an arts collective—an event that some point to as a horrific reminder of how artists throughout the Bay Area find themselves increasingly pushed to the fringe. In

Creative Class On the ground floor of a historic building smack in the middle of a growing corridor of reclaimed wood-heavy restaurants and bars, the 2-year-old SoFA Market is finally almost full. By next year, all 11 spaces will be occupied by food and drink purveyors selling poke bowls, Vietnamese sandwiches, gelato bars and other novel fare. In neighboring storefronts, Minneapolis transplant Uproar Brewing is set to take over Zero1’s former space, and a group of past and present tech workers are planning to open a food and beer business accelerator called Forager in the old South First billiards hall.

All of their models depend on disposable income, which, according to SoFA Market manager Nate LeBlanc, doesn’t necessarily come from performing musicians or artists exhibiting work in nearby galleries.

The district’s new tenants want white-collar creatives who might move into apartments planned for the neighborhood.

“We’re more for an architect who has $15 for a bowl of ramen,” says LeBlanc, a native of San Jose who also counts himself among devotees to the local DJ and contemporary art scenes.

Down the street, Neale of the Core Companies is banking on a similarly affluent segment of the creative class— or at least techies who can appreciate quality offline design. His firm has two big projects in the works: the four-story, 105-unit Sparq on a former Enterprise Rent-a-Car parking lot, and the 24-story, 300-unit Gateway Tower proposed to take over the end of the block extending from Heroes Martial Arts through Poly Cleaners II dry cleaning.

“The workforce of Silicon Valley— there’s a lot of creativity,” Neale says.

“We’re looking for people who want to self-select to live in that environment.”

He expects units to go for prices on par with The Pierce and to include features designed to appeal to the loft crowd, like exposed utility lines. Construction could begin on Sparq as soon as this spring, Neale says, while Gateway Tower just secured initial permits this month and is currently being shopped for financing with a tentative goal to break ground in early 2018. The city’s ceremonial ribbon-cutting scissors may be broken out again for another project on San Carlos Street, where developer Swenson and partner Amcal want to construct a 260-unit apartment complex in place of a boarded up former McDonald’s and the TechShop building next door.

In a slight twist on the model being employed by competitors nearby, Swenson is aiming to attract San Jose State students before they get their first gigs in Silicon Valley. Building plans for The Graduate call for three-and four-bedroom units, where individual rooms will be rented for an estimated $1,000 apiece, penciling out to $3,000 to 4,000 per apartment.

Swenson sees a chance to replicate off-campus housing that has proved popular on the north side of downtown, says senior development director Josh Burroughs. Still, there would be no restrictions barring others from renting in the building, which is currently targeted to begin leasing before the 2019 school year.

“From the city’s perspective, this is just a market-rate apartment project,” Burroughs says. “Personal preference if you want to live with 1,000 students.”

Landlords and new businesses aren’t the only ones excited about more people moving to SoFA, bolstering crowds that thin out after downtown office workers leave for the day. Art galleries and nonprofit groups, too, are open about the fact that they need more foot traffic to make up for Silicon Valley’s notorious dearth of arts benefactors.

Throughout his campaign for the 17th Congressional District seat held for eight terms by Mike Honda, Khanna touted his tech industry savvy and vowed to bolster the region’s national influence. It works to Khanna’s advantage that he shares some of President-elect Donald Trump’s allies and policy ideas. Like Trump, Khanna has garnered support from libertarian billionaire Peter Thiel and a number of other Big Tech donors. Like Trump, Khanna opposed the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal. And like Trump, he wants to give corporations a tax break for repatriating offshore earnings.

South Bay Resists Trump Trump’s vows to crackdown on undocumented immigrants have already prompted local governments to take action. Santa Clara County, San Jose and even Morgan Hill have all passed resolutions promising to protect families from being torn apart by deportations. Last month, the

county agreed to pay for legal services for immigrants at risk. That level of protection will require more funding in the coming year. If Trump makes good on his threats, it may also prompt California’s lawyers and lawmakers to come up with new ways to make it harder for federal immigration agents to carry out Trump’s bidding.

Contenders Emerge for 2018 San Jose’s next mayoral election takes place in 2018, which means potential candidates will start to come out of the woodwork over the next several months. Downtown Councilman Raul Peralez will emerge as a top contender to succeed Mayor Sam Liccardo, who will no doubt run for re-election. Five other council spots will be on the 2018 ballot, including in District 9 with Don Rocha terming out. Rocha will likely set his sights to the regional level and start campaigning to succeed county Supervisor Ken Yeager, who terms out in ’18.

what kind of financial support may be available won’t be clear until an initial pilot with 10-15 cities next year, says Jessica Cusick, a consultant on the program with the California Arts Council. To date, San Jose art groups have occasionally benefited from large federal grants, like a $200,000 National Endowment for the Arts award that MACLA and the city secured in 2013.

Adding to uncertainty about government support is President-elect Donald Trump’s promise to slash federal social programs that support state and local efforts to bolster both the arts and affordable housing. On the latter front, private developers such as Core have previously built affordable housing designed for artists, like the Art Ark on South Fifth Street. Now, however, these developers say it’s not feasible to build in SoFA or elsewhere in San Jose due to a lack of government funding. That leaves people like Helstrup-Alvarez in a bind.

She highlights one MACLA employee who recently quit after moving to Los Banos in search of affordable housing and quickly burned out from the 160mile round trip commute.

While some Bay Area cities have stricter policies requiring developer set-asides for the arts or affordable housing units, that’s not the case with projects underway in SoFA. Neale suggests redirecting existing fees for parks or other services to the arts if that’s what locals want, while champions of the arts have suggested more aggressive efforts to strike while the neighborhood is hot.

“I feel really optimistic because there are lots of small organizations popping up all the time,” Goldstein says. “The real issue is, are we going to be able to sustain it?”

Newcomers like The Pierce offer one potential path forward in the form of a more collaborative approach to planning. The project’s design team, led by longtime SoFA tenant Steinberg Architects, scaled back its size to better blend in with the scale of existing buildings—a give and take that gives arts advocates like Goldstein hope of replicating the model to help ease the shock of rapid growth.

Guitar Heroine With face-melting riffs and catchy songwriting, Yvette Young leads her her band, Covet, into uncharted waters

ER FINGERS FLY up and down the guitar frets. Both hands strike at chords, hammering on and pulling off, hitting notes high and low, occasionally triggering a shimmering harmonic and allowing it to ring. Leaning in close, the careful observer notices that the pinkie finger on her left hand flares out from the rest of her fingers at an unnatural angle. And then in comes the arpeggio—or, more precisely, the chimeric, cluster bomb of notes.

The euphoric, sweeping sound demands attention—not only from the listener, but from the band as well. And as such, it serves as a reminder that her guitar work is not whirling about in a vacuum. She is, in fact, surrounded by a band. Her bass player can’t contain contain the sheer joy that the instantaneous eruption inspires within him, and he smiles broadly. Later, after the band has finished playing, he’ll comment that the riff gets him “every time.”

This is Covet. Led by the 25-yearold Yvette Young, the South Bay instrumental rock trio rehearses in a Saratoga garage, preparing for a forthcoming nationwide tour. The song they’ve just run through is “Hydra,” from their debut EP, Currents, released in late 2015.

It’s a fitting name for a record of sweeping guitar, bass and drums.

Like the ocean, or a mighty river, the music is complex and multifaceted.

Even as it shimmers on the surface,

the driving bass and rock-solid drumming of Young’s bandmates and collaborators David Adamiak and Keith Grimshaw course powerfully along. Still waters run deep indeed. And even when the music is ostensibly violent and turbid, there is an undeniable beauty in its thrashing—a flood of sound.

Like an expert crew, Covet navigates these treacherous waters with aplomb, building dynamic, infectious, challenging compositions that rise and

fall like the tides. Grimshaw’s spare and purposeful drumming serves as a foundation. Adamiak lays down a plush, low-frequency carpet atop Grimshaw’s solid rhythmic slab, which at times merges with Young’s rhythmic guitar work, but is not so thick as to prevent her most ascendent melodic strands from taking flight.

Their work has not gone unnoticed.

In the three years they’ve been playing together, Young’s band has amassed 13,000 likes on Facebook, culled 1,400

“supporters” on the streaming music site Bandcamp (a large figure for the platform) and are currently being courted by three separate record labels.

Polyphia—another instrumental outfit currently signed to Equal Vision Records, is taking Covet on a nationwide tour kicking off Feb. 18.

Despite all this, Young is nervous about what the future holds—not because of a dearth of prospects, clearly—but rather because she never counted on finding herself

here, fronting a band on the verge of breaking big.

Shipping Out “For me, it’s scary,” Young says, speaking to the prospect of giving herself over entirely to the life of a professional musician. Five years ago, as she was nearing the end her undergraduate term at UCLA, she flirted with the idea of playing in

bands. She even took a year off to pursue the dream in Los Angeles.

But ultimately, she says, her heart pulled her back to the Bay Area.

That’s when she recorded her debut solo effort, the Acoustics EP. Tracked in a friend’s Oakland garage and released without much fanfare, the five-song collection was never meant to be more than a passion project. Instead, it blew up. She sold out of physical releases four times over. And that was before she started playing with Adamiak and Grimshaw.

“I thought I would just be working a teaching job,” Young says of the life she envisioned. Currently, Young is balancing her band and a part time job as an art instructor. She loves her gig and she says her boss loves her too—there’s been talk of bringing her on full time. But, as it now stands, Young’s boss is looking to hire a replacement for her while Covet is on tour, and while she’s optimistic that the job will still be there when she returns, there are no guarantees.

“I have this chance to be stable, but I’m giving it all up and pushing it all aside to do the touring thing,” she says, giving voice to her deepest doubts.

But it may be that Young is selling herself short. After all, this is the same young woman who once took second place at the San Jose International Piano Competition with a broken finger.

Rough Seas When Young was just 13, she broke her left pinkie finger—hence the awkward angle of her little digit. The way Young remembers it, she fell while walking down some stairs, and while attempt to catch herself, she snared her finger on the handrail.

In spite of the injury, Young continued rehearsing for the 2002 SJIPC. She went on to nearly win that contest—tying for second place, hobbled as she was.

Of course, wherever there is an athlete working through an injury, there’s also a coach—either tacitly allowing the

decision, or actively encouraging it. In Young’s case, it was her parents who pushed her to go forward with the competition. It’s something she can joke about now, though at the time, she wasn’t happy about it.

“It made me hate music,” Young says of her adolescent years, studying piano and violin at the Los Gatos-based Gingis Academy of Music. “I only did it for them. I won them competitions.”

It is said that time heals all wounds.

Of course, that isn’t true. In Young’s case, her finger never quite went back to normal. She says sometimes it gets stuck in weird positions when she is playing her guitar.

But at least she doesn’t hate music anymore. These days she says she really enjoys playing piano and violin. “I’m so grateful that they made me do it,” she says, referring to her parents. She’s even come around on her pinkie, and now views the injury from a positive vantage.

“It extends my reach, just a little bit,” she says with a laugh, alluding to the fact that she can stretch her

hands a bit further up and down the neck of her guitar.

And, as Young has demonstrated on multiple occasions over the course of her life, the episode at the piano competition is not simply an example of her parents attempting to live through their child. It also speaks to Young’s own determination and grit— and an innate love for music.

Learning the Ropes Young reconnected with that estranged love after she moved away to college—this time on her own terms. She began tinkering on the acoustic guitar and, with little formal training on that instrument, taught herself to play, developing the complex and impressive fingerpicking and finger-tapping technique she now deploys in Covet. And she did all this while earning a double major in fine art and arts education—

TAP IT IN Playing the guitar like a piano, Yvette Young can play chords, basslines and melody simultaneously. completing her dual degree in just two years and one quarter, by taking 20 units nearly every quarter and attending summer session.

“I didn’t intentionally develop a technique or anything,” she says of her chops. “I just did what felt comfortable.” Apparently, what felt “comfortable” for Young, was to let her picking hand wander up from its common position near the bridge of the guitar, to assist in tapping out notes on the neck of the guitar, playing the instrument like a piano.

In some ways it makes sense that someone who started out playing music on piano would gravitate toward finger-tapping on the guitar.

The piano, after all, allows an individual to plonk out polyphonic arrangements—to play chords, bass lines and melodies simultaneously.

“It’s like a language,” Young says of music, drawing a parallel between the way many people must translate words, phrases and sentences spoken in a second language back into their native tongue before achieving complete comprehension. “In order to figure out what I want to play on

guitar, I have to think of it in terms of piano first.”

Here one suspects that Young— an inherently humble person— may be attempting to deflect the suggestion that her style is in any way extraordinary. She insists that her approach to the guitar was born out of necessity, and even goes so far as to suggest it may be due to personal awkwardness and a lack of friends.

“I didn’t really have a bass player or any other band,” she says, recalling her college years. Back then, Young says, she wasn’t interested in attending parties and preferred to keep to herself in her room. This, combined with her ability to hear polyphonic arrangements in her head, led her to tapping, she explains.

“I said, ‘OK, if I tap this, I could pick this other part and I could use these other strings to fill out the sound.’”

Simple, right?

Hardly. Some of rock & roll’s bestknown guitar heroes—Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Eddie Van Halen, Slash—only occasionally employ this advanced technique. Young’s entire sound is built around it. And that’s not even to mention that Adamiak, Covet’s bassist and a talented

musician in his own right, says he can’t hear polyphony in his head.

“She is a very gifted person,” says Nataly Gingis, Young’s piano instructor from the ages of 4 to 16. The cofounder of the Los Gatos academy Young attended speaks highly of her former pupil’s abilities on the piano and violin. And while she hasn’t been in as close contact with Young in recent years, Gingis says she’s heard good things about Covet. “As far as I understand, her guitar technique is pretty advanced.”

Other musicians agree. Brent Walsh, guitarist of the Bay Area progemo outfit I The Mighty, has long appreciated Young’s work and counts himself a Covet fan.

“She got really good, really fast,” he says of Young’s playing. Walsh has known Young since before she even began playing and says the discipline she learned on the piano has definitely played a role in her rapid development. “She’s one of the most driven people I’ve ever met.”

Plus, Walsh adds, Young is a rock star when it comes to social media.

“She’s always been really engaged,” he says, noting that she is great about responding to her fans and giving them sneak peeks into her process.

Mainstream radio play doesn’t matter, appearances on late night shows and record sales don’t matter as much for a band like Covet, Walsh says. For indie groups, he explains, it’s about slowly building a fan base and keeping them engaged, so they’ll come to shows, buy merch and continue to show support.

“I think they can expect the typical indie rock band process,” he says of Covet. “Keep putting out music and keep touring and if it’s genuine and it’s good, they’ll keep climbing.”

Boys’ Club If Young seeks to downplay compliments concerning her guitar chops, it may be more than a function of modesty. As a female in a male-dominated field, she says, fawning praise can quickly take a condescending or creepy turn.

She explains that sometimes fans approach her after shows to tell her how impressed they were with her abilities. Often these people offer genuine praise, but sometimes there

is a not-so-subtle subtext: that she is an amazing guitar player… for a girl.

And then there is the outright sexism—the suggestion, which she sees online more than hears in person—that the only reason she has found success is because of her gender and appearance. That she’s a novelty act and little more.

In an effort to head off haters at the pass, she and her bandmates have sought to take their physical appearance off the table altogether.

“I don’t want to rock the girl-guitarist angle,” Young says, quickly adding that she would never judge any woman who decided to do so. It’s just not her personal style. And so, in music videos, like the one Covet just completed for their forthcoming single, “Aries,” Young, Adamiak and Grimshaw wear costumes.

“Just to completely take that problem out of the equation, I’d rather it just be about my instrument. I just want to be a guitarist, a musician, a person.”

Anchors Aweigh For someone who has had their doubts about pursuing the life of a rock star, Young certainly doesn’t act like it in the “Aries” video. In the clip, she and her band completely destroy a room—which they built specifically for the shoot in Young’s parents’ garage. She laughs as she excitedly explains the concept. The video, she says, should come out around the time she and her band hit the road with Polyphia in February.

The fact that her parents have the garage—and were willing to sign off on her crazy music video concept— is not lost on Young. As a touring musician, it’s unlikely that she’ll be able to afford a home of her own in Saratoga anytime soon, if ever. She says that now, at 25, she feels the pressure to find a place of her own and to fully support herself.

But at the moment, her resolve is strong—as it was when she was powering her way through college and playing through the physical and mental pain of that piano recital at age 13. And so, she is committed to ride her current wave of good fortune, allowing it to take her where it may.

“Everything in my life is pushing me to do this,” she says. “It’s not the ‘smartest’ move, but my gut—and my heart—tells me this is the right move.”

Byrne’s NEUROSOCIETY asks difficult questions, doesn’t follow through

ESPITE THE FRESHLY painted walls, the building looked like it was suffering from suburban abandonment, the parking lot emptied of travelers.

But the big white letters along the tar black roofline spelled out exactly what a visitor was looking for—The Institute Presents: NEUROSOCIETY.

Just below this signage, a large black circle contained a logo: the reversed out profile of a head, the neck stopping and starting again only to end as a dot. The back of the skull remained undrawn and wide open, the white

outline suggesting a question mark—a shadow self also asking a question. This was merely the introduction, though, a subtle nudge to the psyche, suggesting that upon stepping through the front door one would be participating in a series of inquiries about the self.

NEUROSOCIETY is the brainchild of the musician David Byrne (Talking Heads) and Mala Gaonkar, a Harvard graduate whose diversified career portfolio includes work at nonprofits and at an investment firm.

Inside the lobby, there’s a handout that’s meant to explain the origin of their partnership and the experience at hand: An Amateur’s Guide to Neurosociety. Byrne and Gaonkar traveled the world—to places like Copenhagen, Barcelona, New York— in search of scientific laboratories conducting research on topics that interested them, such as cognitive

psychology, sociology and, of course, neuroscience. They participated in experiments that enlightened them about perception, specifically the way the mind tells and invents stories.

NEUROSOCIETY is their enthusiastic effort to share a similar set of experiments with the general public.

However, there’s a singular difference between the experiences of Byrne and Gaonkar and that of their ticket buyers in Menlo Park. They write, “We began to see the work of both science and our brains as a kind of theater.” Despite us visitors being told that Byrne and Gaonkar’s partner labs will be collecting and analyzing our anonymous data from the experiments they’ve devised, NEUROSOCIETY is essentially an immersive theatrical experience. The feeling evoked is similar to that of the now defunct Disneyland ride Adventure Thru Inner Space. It’s science-lite: informative in a remedial way, brightly colored yet vaguely threatening—like an unexamined, lingering dream.

The “ride,” such as it is, begins with a

group of 10 people gathered together.

Everyone stands tentatively, milling about, checking in with the receptionists who, in their mint green lab coats, match each other and the walls.

Once the second hand makes its lazy way past the hour of our scheduled appointment, someone lifts the dark curtain in the corner and steps out from backstage to greet us. Our hostess and performer is pleased to see our slightly puzzled, but game, faces. We don paper booties, placing them around the soles of our dirty shoes, and enter the first room. The stage is brightly lit like we’re on the set of a reality TV show. Are our movements and facial expressions being recorded?

There must be cameras somewhere, but that’s just a paranoid thought in this shrine to the blinking flat screens of streaming and new media.

Our cheerful thought-leader asks us a series of questions that require us to publicly contend with our moral compasses. Except we don’t truly interact or engage with the other people in the room. We don’t discuss our answers or reveal our tendencies or prejudices. We are as anonymous as the moon, and just as removed. What might have felt risky—disagreeing with a stranger in a controlled environment— is simply left for private conjecture.

In each successive experiment, we are led about from place to place, adjusting our bodies to fill in the unfamiliar spaces, adjusting our eyes to different shades of light and darkness. But we are siloed by the way the experiments are designed. The Amateur’s Guide asks one question that we’re meant to answer by the end, “What kind of mini-society will you build or imagine in an hour?” The atmosphere at The Institute is safe, but there’s a lingering sense of a missed opportunity for us to build that mini-society. Nothing’s at stake for the participants because the data is not accessible for us to debate or deplore. Our responses disappear into a computer only to return as passive statistics on graphs. Our restlessness and volatility have to vanish when the final switch turns off and we’re ushered politely out of those mint green doors.

Do The Da Da NEARLY 100 YEARS after the French writer André Breton published his Manifesto of Surrealism in 1924, “The Conjured Life: The Legacy of Surrealism” successfully rehabilitates the movement’s significance and enduring influence. Expanding on an exhibit that closed earlier this year at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, the exhibit polishes up the tarnished image of Surrealists by omitting the most famous, endlessly reproduced hits like Dalí’s melting clocks and Magritte’s bowlers hats.

By juxtaposing the old with the new, the careful, coherent curation at Stanford’s Cantor Arts Center confers a recherché quality on works that might otherwise be gathering a coating of dust. Cindy Sherman is represented by Untitled #188 1989, a lurid photograph of a blow-up doll with splayed legs, surely receiving cunnilingus by a faceless monster. Her The Conjured Life twisted body lies on a riotous bed of bric-a-brac, colorful found objects—all sharp-edged and metallic.

Thru Apr 3, Free Sherman’s photograph hangs in a separate part of the gallery Cantor Arts from the Balthus painting Two Young Girls, 1949. Essentially, Center, Stanford she’s turned his work upside down, recomposing his seated naked girl in her unnatural posture—her left knee bent up, her hips turned toward the viewer to reveal the top of her mons pubis, her bare breasts, strangely nippleless, also on display. For Sherman, it isn’t enough that the second girl in the painting, though clothed, stares out of a window and away from Balthus’ uncomfortably intimate scene. Her photograph distills his image down to the ne plus ultra version of a pornographic still, but as told from the woman’s point of view. Her subject is literally reduced and transformed into an object, a plastic one at that, by the male gaze.

The short-lived American photographer Francesca Woodman was a more recessive artist than Sherman. Three of her black and white images capture thrilling, haunted effects of phantom figures. In an empty house, an outstretched arm waves a white cloth in the center of a doorway. A blurredout human form crawls on its hands and knees through a hole in a heavy tombstone. A woman in a print dress, her face hidden behind a detached fireplace facade, escapes from or retreats into a dilapidated chimney. She photographs what’s most vital and central to the Surrealist cause: making art out of what normally remains unspoken and unintelligible, our dream life.

The Conjured Life doesn’t completely ignore the contributions of the movement’s stars. There’s Joan Miró, Paul Delvaux and Man Ray. In person, René Magritte’s The Wonders of Nature, is much more affecting than when viewed on a screen. —Jeffrey Edalatpour

Isabelle Huppert shines as an aging intellectual in ‘Things To Come’

A

N ACUTE PORTRAIT of a woman of a certain age, Things To Come towers over Isabelle Huppert’s much-vaunted performance in Elle. Huppert plays Nathalie, an aging philosophy teacher who needs all the consolation her discipline can provide.

Her neurotic mother (Edith Scob, of the horror classic Yeux Sans Visage) is prone to suicide threats and anxiety attacks. Nathalie’s husband, Heinz (Andre Marcon), is a stout and humorless old pedant, who is secretly seeing someone on the side. And

Nathalie’s reputation as a scholar isn’t enough to save her from the bottom-line obsessed executives at her publishing house.

Though she’s renowned in her field, her textbooks aren’t selling. Fellow snobs, who love the blank white covers of French paperbacks with the stark titles on them, will cringe along with Nathalie at the redesign of her books—the money-men at the publishing house want to see abstract, colorful patterns. The result looks like a quart of rainbow sherbet has been melted on the cover. The marketeers provide the film’s title: “The future seems compromised…” they worry, contemplating Nathalie’s sales figures.

There are small consolations in the older woman’s plight: She learns fondness for the overfed cat her mother left her to care for. It’s a

warmer, cattier cat than the highly symbolic feline in Elle, the one who gave the cold eye-of-god look as her owner was raped.

A particularly handsome and talented former student, Fabien (Roman Kolinka), helps get Nathalie out of her shell. He’s involved in the political fight against the French government’s cutting of benefits.

Fabien has joined a commune of international students at an alpine farmhouse, where he proposes to edit a revolutionary journal.

Action is obviously not Nathalie’s strong point. She’d been political once, traveling to the USSR to see the workers paradise for herself. At this stage she’s nothing but a consummate teacher. When her students strike against the social welfare cuts, she keeps out of it—if the government raises the retirement age to 67, it doesn’t bother her: “I love my job.”

Her obsession is to arm her students with self-criticism and the ability to think, to try usher them into a future she won’t live to see.

Huppert’s flexibility is a marvel.

She sets the pace of this movie as few actresses could. “After 40, a woman is fit for the trash,” she tells Fabien, talking herself out of an attraction to the young anarchist. Everything about Huppert contradicts that self-deprecation. Nathalie is neither so rigid that she can’t be loved, nor so soft that anyone can leave a mark on her. Standing, listening, speaking: here is the authority, the wit that sums up the plight of the serious intellectual who has run out of ways to monetize her intelligence.

Director Mia Hansen-Love’s study is the opposite of a womangetting-her-groove-back drama.

There’s an air of nostalgia in the soft Kodachome-ish colors Denis Lenoir (Still Alice) brings to bear. Huppert’s paisley blouses and bluejeans recall the ’60s, as does the talk of the stirred-up students.

Even the most amiable divorce leaves some blood on the floor. That said, Heinz becomes an incidental character—we don’t see his reasons for straying, beyond Latin male ego.

The late Carrie Fisher commented that the trouble with men is that they always require a woman to agree with them, but a woman as logical as Nathalie could be a bit chilly. He remains what he seems at first: a highly educated fool.

Early on in the film, Nathalie and her family take a trip to a summer house in Brittany, not far from the seaside monument where the writer and adventurer Chateaubriand is buried. Near that grave is a plaque telling the visitor to be silent and listen to the sounds of the wind and the waves; Things to Come is a similarly quiet, with little music: some Schubert, some Woody Guthrie, and that lullaby that provided another first-rate French film with its title, “I’ve Loved You So Long.” The movie cherishes the importance of the thinkers who puzzled out the rights of all humans to freedom and dignity.

Things to Come has a philosopher’s precision and a poet’s sensitivity.

DIY DOWNER In the aftermath of the Ghost Ship fire, DIY venues are being demonized.

Kitty Castle shut down, other DIY venues in peril after Oakland fire

N A RECENT Saturday night during a relatively tame event, one of San Jose’s longrunning DIY venues, Kitty Castle, was permanently shut down by the police.

“Before this month, I had talked to the cops at least three other times,” says Stephanie Chang, who launched the venue in 2012, and has been running it out of an industrial park space in San Jose’s Monticello neighborhood ever since. As anyone who has experience running a DIY

venue can attest, this is fairly standard.

However, in the wake of the Ghost Ship tragedy in Oakland—where 36 people died in a sudden fire that ravaged an under-the-radar living space and venue—similar spaces around the Bay Area and the nation are under increased pressure from local authorities.

“How their attitude has changed, from my perspective having experienced it, seems like it’s because of specific directives,” Chang says. “I really feel like with Ghost Ship, the response has been really stern.”

More than anyone, she would know. For years, Chang has been one of the few people reliably bringing young musicians from all

over the globe to San Jose, booking bands at virtually any spot in the city that is open to hosting events.

A few of the most noteworthy national and international bands Chang booked include Rixe (France), Sem Hastro (Brazil), G.L.O.S.S. (Olympia, Washington) and Crime Watch (New York).

Kitty Castle came into the world in 2012 when a band that Chang knew from Oakland was having trouble finding somewhere to book in San Jose.

“At the time I just thought I’d go for it,” she says. “I called every single space or venue or person that I had ever attended an all-ages show at growing up in San Jose, and every single space that still had a number either said, ‘We don’t do shows anymore,’ or they said, ‘We don’t do that kind of show anymore,’ meaning punk or harder, faster music.”

the space that became Kitty Castle: an unassuming warehouse located in the no-man’s land between North San Jose and Santa Clara.

Chang, who attributes her career as a booker to an informational zine she read on how to organize shows on the DIY level, operated the space safely and without incident for years, hosting occasional shows and offering an alcohol- and drug-free nightlife alternative to youth and adults alike.

But then, after the Oakland fire, the hammer came down—fast.

“They tried to frame it as: ‘The thing that happened in Oakland, we don’t want anything like that to happen here,’” she says. “Even though we’re configured vastly differently from Ghost Ship.”

This turn is deeply unfortunate for the already precarious community that relies on spaces like Kitty Castle to make up for San Jose’s lack of proper venues for live music. Despite being the 10th largest city in the U.S., San Jose suffers from a dearth of live venues, and few of them are willing to host all-ages shows.

“Essentially the only reason Kitty Castle existed was because there was such a lack of spaces that say yes to shows,” she says.

Then things took a strange turn.

Four days after being shut down, Kitty Castle found itself subject to an alt-right (read: neo-Nazi) inquisition of DIY spaces on the controversial message board 4chan. A thread on the “politically incorrect” board, dated Dec. 14, listed the venue under the headline “Flop Houses Already Shut Down.” The post misrepresented facts with the intent of demonizing the small community.

“The Oakland warehouse fire occurred in a radical leftist commune rife with HIV, drugs, and alternative lifestyle degeneracy,” the thread opens, continuing, “These communes are known as ‘DIY spaces’ to the bums, anarchists, and drug addicts who populate them.”

The reality is far from that.

“The specific hazards and dangers of Ghost Ship were really unique,” Chang says calmly over the phone.

After years of putting in hard work to benefit her community in San Jose, she is well aware of the truth of the scene she circulates in. “Not every single DIY space is a Ghost Ship replica, but that’s being ignored.”

GO TIME Shane Luevano and Mario Sanchez decided to start their Watsonville jazz-punk outfit Aurora Beam while playing Pokémon Go.

Pokémon Punk Rock THE PAIR OF musicians behind Watsonville-based instrumental “jazznoise” duo Aurora Beam first bonded over their favorite records back in senior year of high school. Drummer Shane Luevano and guitarist Mario Sanchez swapped playlists while working in a video production class they were both taking.

Both are fans of other heavy, mathy instrumental rock groups, like The Fall of Troy. But it wasn’t their common musical interests that ultimately launched Aurora Beam. They decided to form a band while out playing the biggest smartphone game of 2016.

“We kinda started jamming because we were going hunting on Pokémon Go over the summer,” Luevano says over the phone, pitching his voice in a manner suggesting a matter-of-fact shrug, as if to suggest: Hey. There’s not much to do in Watsonville anyway. So we formed this band. Whatev.

Indeed. When asked about living in Watsonville, Luevano offers: “It’s pretty sleepy.”

Aurora Beam’s music, however, is anything but a snooze. It leaps and stutters, zigs and zags with frenetic energy. On Aurora Beam’s recently released EP, 3D on Ice, one clearly hears The Fall of Troy influence—as well as hints of Hella, Tera Melos and At The Drive In. Fiery sonic explosions, give way to wiggling, barely executed electric spasms—like a Charizard going head-to-head with a Pikachu.

For his part, Luevano views his drumming in a similar vein as an epic Pokémon battle. “I love the whole use of my body—the physical nature of it,” he says. And as far as the influences they pour into their music, Luevano says that he and Sanchez try not to limit themselves. “We try to have a little bit of everything—the heavy parts, the jazzy parts.”

My girlfriend found a certain little blue pill in my jeans pocket, and her feelings were hurt. I explained that I’m as into her as ever; I just need a little extra help because I’m getting older. However, she’s taking this personally.

How do I reassure her?—Rhymes With Niagara Back in seventh grade, erections were easy to get—especially when you were standing in front of the class giving your oral report on Harriet Tubman.

A penis is generally at its peppiest when a man’s in his teens and 20s (before genes and/or years of bad living narrow the arteries from superhighways to singlefile footpaths). That’s because erections are blood flow-powered—ultimately, anyway. They start in the brain in response to a thought or something from the environment—like being touched or seeing the hot neighbor bending over in yoga pants. Nitric oxide gets released and starts a chemical reaction that relaxes smooth muscle in the penis, allowing blood vessels to dilate: “Open up! Party time!” Then, sex researcher Dr. Robert Kolodny explains, “an increased amount of blood flows into the penis, where it is trapped in three spongy cylinders that run the length of the organ. The resulting fluid pressure is what causes the penis to increase in size … and to become rigid.”

There’s an elastic fibrous membrane—the tunica albuginea— that keeps the blood in the penis. And

this thing being leaky, kind of like a submarine hatch with a bad seal, is just one of the things (along with narrowed arteries, anxiety, endocrine problems, smoking, and diabetes, among others) that can cause a penis to stay floppy or get wilty.

Using a pharmaceutical erection helper is basically like calling in a plumber when the shower pressure isn’t what it used to be. It doesn’t make a man the least bit more attracted to a woman or more into sex than he’d otherwise be.

It just relaxes the smooth muscle and increases blood flow, making the, um, cadet more likely to report for duty.

Explain all of this to your girlfriend.

Then tell her how beautiful and sexy you find her, and tell her again. And keep telling her with regularity. Men don’t quite understand how much this means to a woman. When a woman believes her man finds her attractive, it helps her feel loved and secure. That reassurance—combined with being clued in on the mechanics of the manpart—should help your girlfriend understand that there’s no reason to take your pill popping personally.

In “senior dating,” how, and how soon, do you suggest I disclose my ED? I’m 77, and this woman I’m seeing is 60ish.—Man Of Yore When I was 13, I could read a book from across the room. These days, it’s sometimes hard to make out the words on those ginormous highway signs unless I let my Leader Dog take the wheel.

Lucky for me, nobody snickers that I’m less of a woman because I have less-thanperfect eyesight. And it’s pretty stupid that we attach that baggage to the aging penis.

We don’t expect a 1939 Studebaker to drive like a 2016 BMW. (And hey…where’s the backup camera on this thing?!)

To say you aren’t alone is something of an understatement. In reviewing survey data from men 75 or older, UCLA urology professor Christopher Saigal found that 77.5 percent reported experiencing some degree of erectile dysfunction—the inability to “get and keep an erection adequate for satisfactory intercourse.” And 47.5 percent have a complete inability to achieve liftoff. (P.S. This isn’t exactly a secret to women who date 70-something men.)

Unfortunately, the reality for aging penises goes poorly with the ridiculous belief many people have that intercourse is the only “real” sex. However, sex therapist Dr. Marty Klein observes that ultimately, “what most people say they want from sex is some combination of pleasure and closeness.” You can give that to a woman— even if, at 77, everything on you is stiff but the one part you’d like to be.

That’s what you need to convey. But don’t sit there in the bright lights of the diner and be all, “Let’s talk about my penis…” Wait till there’s a makeout moment, and after you kiss a bit, pause the action. In telling her, consider that you set the tone for whether your situation is some shameful thing or “just one of those things.” Humor tends to express the latter pretty well—like “I have a pet name for my penis. It’s Rip Van Winkle, because he’s been out cold since the Bush administration.”

T. VESUVIUS BLACK Ash might be coming to 11th and Santa Clara streets in downtown San Jose. On Jan. 26, the San Jose Woman’s Club, in partnership with South Bay Vegan Drinks, will stage a rip-roaring fundraiser for the Rancho Compasión animal sanctuary.

Unfolding at the club’s historic building at 75 S. 11th St., the event will feature a menu of food and drinks prepared by renowned vegan chef Miyoko Schinner, along with a silent

auction to bid on food, dinner, local gifts and theater packages. The menu will feature Miyoko’s award-winning cheeses (including her Mt. Vesuvius Black Ash) and several other dishes.

Everything will be 100 percent vegan.

In case you're wondering, the San Jose Woman's Club is not a bunch of geriatrics wearing knitted shawls.

The group participates in many facets of San Jose life, including scholarship programs, computer camps and short film events. Now they’ve hooked up with South Bay Vegan Drinks, a monthly meetup group.

“The San Jose Woman’s Club is a very diverse organization,” says Lisa Buchanan, the club’s president. “We were looking to partner and increase that diversity and support organizations

outside our traditional antiques and cards and that sort of thing.”

Enter Schinner, a pioneer of artisan vegan cheese, and one whose story is way beyond the scope of this column. Among other pursuits, her company, Miyoko’s Kitchen, provides artisanal products made from numerous whole foods and plantbased ingredients. Her creativity has resulted in tremendous accolades. For example, Mt. Vesuvius Black Ash was the first vegan cheese product to win a Sofi Award, sort of like the Oscars of specialty food. It is says that Miyoko “broke the mold” of dairy cheeses.

Of course, technically, California state law won’t allow her to call a product “cheese” if there are no dairy ingredients, so you might hear phrases like “cultured nut product” bouncing around these conversations. Which is fine. Soy milk manufacturers went through the same ridiculous ordeal. They weren’t allowed to call it “milk” at first.

What’s more, everybody involved here focuses on the compassionate aspects of their craft. Miyoko also co-founded Rancho Compasión, a bucolic sanctuary in the West Marin County countryside, a nonprofit providing a home for previously neglected, exploited, or abused farm animals. A perfect companion effort to a vegan cheese business, Rancho Compasión launched in 2015, and all the funds raised by the gala hoedown at the San Jose Woman’s Club will flow directly to the ranch.

The San Jose Woman’s Club operates out of a Spanish Revival building originally constructed for the club in 1929. By 1946 the mortgage was paid in full. A legendary artifice of historical significance—San Jose landmark No. 32, to be exact—the building is a true diamond in the rough compared with the rest of the immediate neighborhood. If you harbor even a passing interest in architecture, or if you’re clued in to the mostly male history of benevolent societies and fraternal organizations around the turn of the 20th century, the Woman’s Club provides an intriguing alternative. The building’s architecture, interior design, landscape, accoutrements and overall furnishings could easily be the subject of a full feature story.

And speaking of fraternal organizations, let us not forget South Bay Vegan Drinks, the other main sponsor of the fundraiser. A while back, a group of vegans began to meet at the Normandy House Lounge in Santa Clara. It was just a monthly meetup, a networking event to provide a place where vegans could find each other, a safehouse of sorts. Then it grew into something formidable.

“It was a way for vegans to find each other, get to know each other, because usually it’s pretty lonely and people tease us,” says Clyde Lerner, the group’s director. “We have people that have been vegans for years but they’d never met any other vegans.”

At the dinner, at least 150 are expected. In addition to Miyoko’s Cheese platter, expect an Italian menu including Mushroom Lasagna and Chocolate Espresso Cake.

Danbi brings experience, delectable Korean fare to Japantown

ANBI IS KOREAN for “sweet rain,” particularly one that comes after a drought.

It’s also the name of Jim and Sunny Lee Turner’s new restaurant. Open for less than a month, the Turners used to own Omogari in San Jose’s Japantown.

After retiring for the second time, Turner said that his wife, Sunny, who had spent her life in the restaurant business, convinced him to start again

with Danbi. If the Turners had a creative drought after leaving Omogari behind, Danbi lives up to its refreshing name.

The bright white menu is divided into familiar and easy to read categories, accompanied by color photographs of the dishes. For “Starters and Shared Plates,” the usual suspects make the lineup: fried rice, potstickers, rice cakes, noodle and tofu salads, and, most irresistibly, pancakes. Of the three choices— Kimchi, Vegetable, Seafood we decided on the Vegetable Pancake ($13.95) stuffed with zucchini, carrots and green onions.

The cook called in sick that day and Sunny was running the kitchen by herself, so it took longer than usual for the pancake to arrive. It was crisp,

warm and comforting on a cold day, and completely worth the wait. While running the front of the house and waiting on tables, Jim kindly explained the situation. His wife creates marvels behind the scenes and he serves them with an endless supply of consideration.

The next course forced a debate between “Korean Grill & BBQ” and “Korean Fried Chicken.” On two nearby tables, diners greedily shared large platters of golden fried chicken.

Even after ordering the Beef Short Ribs ($15.95), there was a temporary pang of regret lingering at our table.

Had we made the right choice? Those feelings quickly disappeared after digging into the sizzling platter of ribs.

Charred expertly, they were tender and tangy from the house sauce marinade. One after another, we ate them down to the bone.

Instead of opting for one of the more familiar “Soft Tofu Soups,” we perused the nine options for “Signature Korean Soups” and settled

on the Spicy Seafood Kalgooksoo ($12.95). The waitress explained that the broth was going to be thicker than a tofu soup and it would include noodles. After I ladled the steaming red broth into a bowl and tasted it, something about the meal came into focus. The soup contained clear and profound flavors: tomato, lemon, garlic, black pepper. Udon noodles are often too thick and rubbery, but these ones were superb. With the addition of squid, two whole shrimp and clams in the shell, this was a Korean bouillabaisse that the French along the Côte d'Azur would envy.

Charred expertly, the ribs were tender and tangy from the house sauce marinade Despite using a variety of disparate ingredients, Sunny consistently constructed harmonious plates.

Nowhere was this more evident than in the Spicy Pork Hot Stone Pot ($13.95) from the “Stone Pot Rice Bowls” section. The spiciness of the pork was balanced against the unexpected sweetness of a vegetable like bok choy. The egg on top, which I often forego, was superbly cooked and added a creaminess to the crunchy rice at the bottom of the bowl.

Of course, six silver bowls of banchan preceded the meal: zucchini, bean sprouts, fish cakes, seaweed, potatoes and cabbage kimchi. But the main courses were the stars. If I lived in the same neighborhood as Danbi, my Sunday night go-to would include a bowl of Sunny’s sublime soup. And her BBQ. And another one of those elusive, highly sought after pancakes.
