An amazing read. No, really, people … solutions.

I don’t know where on God’s green Earth you got the idea that it would be anything less than insulting to explain the “hot/crazy” matrix on a first date. But let my hellfire fury of female scorn be a lesson.

For anyone who hasn’t heard of said matrix, it’s explained on a men’s rights-ish YouTube channel by a bro with a Sharpie, whiteboard and head full of pseudoscience.

The brofessor measures a woman’s date-ability based on the clichéd 1-10 hotness scale and a “crazy” rating that starts at four. Why a four? Because “there is no such thing as a woman who’s not at least a ‘four’ crazy.” By showing me this drivel, you explained, you were trying to communicate how “beautifully illogical” I am. Mhmm. Pretty sure that video told us more about you as a person than anyone else’s crazy-hotness. But you know what? Re-Recount Councilwoman SYLVIA ARENAS was sworn in to San Jose’s District 8 seat this past weekend, but the vote tallying isn’t over yet. Her opponent, JIMMY NGUYEN, wants to pay out of pocket for another, more detailed recount. The latest reckoning began this morning, according to the Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters Office (ROV), and it could cost Nguyen up to $8,000 a day. State law requires the person requesting a recount to pay up front before each day of the tally. Nguyen, who lost by 87 votes, will have the option of stopping the recount at any time. Among several other factors, the cost depends on how many elections workers he wants on the job. On day one, Nguyen shelled out $1,600, according to ROV They spokeswoman Did ANITA TORRES. On Tuesday, Arenas and Nguyen each brought two volunteers to keep an eye on things. The most expensive option, Torres says, would last about 80 hours, or 10 days, and rack up a $32,918 tab for Nguyen. County recounts are triggered when two candidates finish within a half-percentage point of each other and involve a manual tally of ballots that were already machine-counted. This is the first year the county has conducted the automatic recounts, which are not required under state law. The Board of Supervisors voted to roll out a pilot program that triggers the recounts in close races. June’s primary election resulted in the first such automatic recount when then-San Jose Councilman MANH NGUYEN finished behind LAN DIEP and challenged the results.

The District 4 incumbent opted to pay out of pocket for another crack at the tally, but still finished behind Diep, who assumes his post on the council next month.

Far and Away BETTER TO GIVE While Silicon Valley philanthropists have stepped up charitable giving, a tiny fraction of it goes to local nonprofits that serve local needs.

New report finds local philanthropy overlooks Silicon Valley needs

EFORE KATHY KWAN lavished a $225,000 gift on the San Francisco AIDS Foundation, she took a tour of one of the nonprofit’s clinics. What the Silicon Valley philanthropist saw inside—homeless, drugaddled, disease-ravaged clients, a panorama of human suffering—made her want to run out the door.

“The only thing that saved me from turning away was that the director of the foundation used to sit next to me in grad school,” says Kwan, who, a decade ago, formed a multimillion dollar charitable foundation with her husband, Alan Eustace, Google’s former vice president of knowledge. “One of the challenges for

a philanthropist who’s just starting out is that it can be really hard to empathize.

You’re meeting a population of people and you’re in a low-income environment that you may never have encountered.

It’s a culture shock.”

Not a lot of philanthropists talk about philanthropy, let alone with such candor. But Kwan speaks openly about how her foray into the world of charitable giving has forced her to grapple with her own biases.

“We live in such geographic pockets from block to block that we often don’t realize how much need there is in our own community,” says the Menlo Park resident. “There’s a discomfort in acknowledging that we have all these problems close to homel.”

A new report calls it the empathy gap.

While Silicon Valley’s affluence and charitable giving have exploded, the region’s income inequality rivals that of the poorest nations, and its philanthropy is directed just about everywhere else

in the world but here. The study, titled “The Giving Code” and published last month by consulting group Open Impact, found that only 7 percent of all giving by private foundations in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties goes to local nonprofits. That’s $94 million out of $1.2 billion. Only 3 percent went to local nonprofits that are also dedicated to addressing local needs. Part of the disconnect may stem from the fact that many Silicon Valley philanthropists aren’t from the Bay Area and lack connections to local issues. They also tend to support causes they’re familiar with: schools, hospitals, conservation.

“There’s a learning curve,” Kwan says. “I’m like a lot of philanthropists in that we were really fortunate to come into some wealth. But you don’t really realize that you’ll have to give away these large sums of money, which usually starts out as a tax event, and you don’t really know where to start.”

The authors of “The Giving Code,” Alexa Cortes Culwell and Heather McLeod Grant, explain the shift in philanthropy—from local to global— as a reflection of corporate values. The “giving code” referenced in the study’s title refers to an unspoken ethic that

Foundation, which is based in Mountain View and manages elite accounts such as the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, has grown to one of the largest philanthropic funds in the nation by mastering the aspirational vernacular preferred by Kwan and high-profile donors. The foundation, with $7 billion in assets, now successfully competes with global wealth management firms, Culwell and Grant report.

The relatively recent shift to “social investment” renders philanthropy yet another tool to diminish taxes and manage wealth. Yet the new philanthropists tend to eschew discussions about how to reform a system that perpetuates inequities that afforded them enormous wealth in the first place. For nonprofits helping clients with subsistence-level needs, it can be hard to view the world through anything but a lens of social justice.

“The Giving Code” puts into numbers what South Bay nonprofits have known for years. Skyrocketing housing costs have heightened demand for services, but funding for charities that provide them has been on the decline. All too often, that means turning people away.

Shelters for runaways, domestic violence victims and the homeless run out of room. Food pantries run out of food.

“This is your worst nightmare as a nonprofit,” says Kathy Jackson, CEO of Second Harvest Food Bank, which feeds 253,000 people a month in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties. Culwell and Grant call this the prosperity paradox— one that won’t be cracked without rewriting the so-called giving code.

In 2015, the 150 biggest publicly traded Bay Area tech companies generated $833 billion in sales. The number of socalled “unicorns”—companies valued at $1 billion or more—grew from three in 2011 to 21 this year. According to Joint Venture Silicon Valley, the region is now home to 76,000 millionaires and billionaires. Yet most of the giving to nonprofits that serve local needs come from low-income or middle-class donors—many of whom relied on the charity themselves. Sixty-five percent of donations to Second Harvest come in the form of small gifts from local individuals, Jackson says.

But what reforms would make it so that we don’t have to relegate sustenance, medical care and other basic human needs to charity?

“If we only knew,” Jackson replies.

“I would love to be out of a job if that means the need is met.”

Critics of the new charitable world order call it philanthro-capitalism. The Economist coined the term in 2006 to describe an emerging idea that “social investors” set out to “do well by doing good.” It was in the spirit of philanthro-capitalism that Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, vowed last year to donate 99 percent of their shares in the social media company—worth $45 billion— to charity during their lifetime. In an open letter to their newborn child, they announced the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, a limited liability corporation dedicated to “advancing human potential and promoting equality” through “philanthropic, public advocacy and other activities for the public good.”

News of their foray into philanthropy was met with adulation. Nearly drowned out by the applause were critics who pointed out that the purported charity had more to do with cash management and laying fertile ground for future business opportunities. Jesse Eisinger, an investigative reporter for the nonprofit ProPublica, described the formation of a limited liability company as simply a way to move money “from one pocket to the other.”

“The Giving Code,” for its part, describes philanthro-capitalism more diplomatically than Eisinger and never actually uses the term. Because Silicon Valley philanthropists view social change in terms of investment, they tend to speak a different language than community-based organizations that focus on human services, such as feeding the hungry and housing the homeless.

“Theirs is a language of finance, of metrics, of power, of capitalism, of winners and losers,” Culwell and Grant write. “And it is starkly different from the more personal and emotional language that nonprofit leaders use to convey both the impact of their work and the vital human needs that drive it.”

“The Giving Code” puts into words what Kwan says she has felt all along.

“When you talk about social justice, you’re implying that there’s a wrong being done in society that we need to fix,” Kwan says. “I like to think in terms of opportunity. I come in saying, ‘Let’s create opportunities for people who don’t have as much.’ I want to figure out how to create excitement about a cause and build it up from there.”

Judge Persky Cleared in Stanford Swimmer’s Rape Case

BY JENNIFER WADSWORTH The Santa Clara County judge who sentenced ex-Stanford swimmer Brock Turner to six months in jail for sexually assaulting a passed-out woman by a trash bin has been cleared of misconduct.

Judge Aaron Persky’s sentencing in the Turner case fell within the “parameters set by law,” according to a report released Monday by the California Commission on Judicial Performance. The panel also determined that Persky displayed no pattern of bias in four other cases cited by his detractors.

The ruling concludes a months-long review of thousands of complaints about Persky. Critics accused him of displaying socioeconomic, racial and gender bias by granting Turner anything less than prison time.

The findings didn’t sit well with Persky’s critics, who vowed to forge

ahead with their campaign to have him recalled from the bench.

“We strongly disagree with the commission’s conclusion on judicial bias and we believe that Judge Persky has in fact demonstrated a clear pattern of bias in cases of sex crimes and violence against women,” said Michele Dauber, a Stanford University law professor and head of the campaign to oust Perksy.

In March, a jury convicted Turner of three felony charges: assault with intent to rape and two counts of sexually penetrating an intoxicated person with his fingers. Under California law, each of those violations comes with a maximum penalty of up to six years in prison.

Persky hewed more to the probation officer’s recommendation, sentencing then-20-year-old Turner to six months in jail, three years’ probation and a

lifetime of treatment and supervision as a registered sex offender.

In handing down the sentence, Persky acknowledged the difficulty of the decision and the pain expressed by the victim, named Emily Doe in court records. The judge said he understood that the victim’s life has been devastated by the assault. In addition, he added, the investigation, court proceedings and media attention “in a way, sort of poisoned the lives of the people that have been affected by the defendant’s actions.

“Is state prison for this defendant an antidote to that poison?” Persky asked in court. “Is incarceration in state prison the right answer for the poisoning of [Emily Doe’s] life? And trying to balance the factors in the Rules of Court, I conclude that it is not, and that justice would best be served, ultimately, with a grant of probation.”

San Jose Holds Forum on Police, Public Trust San Jose will launch an 18-month project next month that aims to improve the relationship between local police and minorities.

The campaign, spearheaded

by Independent Police Auditor Walter Katz, begins with a Jan. 21 forum where people can share their thoughts about how to build trust between the public and the officers sworn to protect them.

Data shows that the San Jose Police Department disproportionately detains black and Latino people. The statistics released last year found that white people were less likely to be detained despite being more likely to carry drugs (16 percent) compared to AfricanAmericans (14 Walter Katz percent) and Latinos (12 percent).

Those inequities persist in Santa Clara County’s prosecution rates, too.

The District Attorney’s Office released a report in the fall highlighting disparities.

Mayor Sam Liccardo and District 5 Councilwoman Magdalena Carrasco will co-host the event. The Silicon Valley Community Foundation and the San Francisco 49ers donated money to organize it. Featured speakers include Katz, San Jose police Chief Eddie Garcia and UC Berkeley sociologist and professor emeritus Harry Edwards.

The half-day forum will include a panel about policing vulnerable communities and the public’s expectations for police transparency and accountability. Breakout sessions will follow, so members of the audience can jump into the conversation and pitch solutions.

The hope, according to organizers, is that event conversations will translate to policy solutions. Refreshments will be provided and there is no cost to attend. —Jennifer Wadsworth

HAT A YEAR. It’d be easy to wallow and drip tears into an IPA, wail a sad song into a shot of whiskey, lament those we’ve lost and wring our hands in dread of what's to come. Or we could drink a warm glass of shut-the-hell-up and put on a happy face—especially when there’s so much to look forward to in 2017.

Silicon Valley continues to be the engine to national and global economies, and the region’s nightlife and restaurant scene is ascending.

Local music venues are better than they’ve been in years, and South

Bay artists have become increasingly defiant in maintaining their roots and keeping their work local.

Over the last year, we’ve also seen a number of great new eateries and watering holes open their doors. Local foodie and restaurateur Jim Stump, founder of The Table in Willow Glen and The Vesper in Campbell, recently unfurled his excellent FORTHRIGHT OYSTER BAR in Campbell. Their Sunday happy hour provides a delicious—and affordable—brunch date. San Jose sports and fight fans scored a win this winter when a new game rolled into downtown: ROOKIES SPORTS LODGE owner Mike Hobson opened a second location at the corner of South First and San Fernando streets. There isn’t a seat in the house that doesn’t offer a direct

line of sight to at least one of their three dozen big screens.

A group of investors, beer enthusiasts and music lovers have big plans for the former home of South First Billiards. The founders of FORAGER TASTING ROOM & EATERY envision a futuristic taproom, where patrons can order beer by the ounce and pay with their smartphones.

The space is also designed to serve as a brick and mortar laboratory for culinary upstarts who want to expand beyond the confines of their food trucks but aren’t quite ready. Forager currently hosts regular live concerts and doubles as a local art gallery.

For those who want a taste of David Kinch’s world-famous fare—without the Manresa price tag—the Michelin starred chef’s casual dining experience, THE

BYWATER, features tasty New Orleansinspired fare in downtown Los Gatos.

As far as Michelin stars go, San Jose finally earned one of its own this year with ADEGA. And just wait until SOCIAL POLICY gets its liquor license. The new coffee and nosh spot—the brainchild of the creators of Bellano Coffee in Santa Clara and B2 at San Pedro Square—is already seeing big lines for their boozefree weekend brunch menu (thanks in no small part to Executive Chef Marshall Reid). The former home of Blackbird Tavern boasts a massive patio and industrial chic interior.

The coming year also promises plenty of great art, thanks to multiple grass-roots endeavors. For the past two years, the EXHIBITION DISTRICT has combated San Jose’s

beige sprawl by working with local businesses and property owners to pay artists for large-scale murals all over downtown. In 2017, the ExD is poised to go bigger than ever with a $40,000 grant from the Knight Foundation. Partnering with Marlo Custodio of NEEBA MEDIA and with some help from Drew Clark and his performance art cooperative, THE COMMONs, they’ve “reactivated” the former Ross Dress For Less in on South First Street, turning it into a temporary space for artists to paint, perform and sell their creations.

Speaking of the Knight Foundation, the Knight Ridder logo finally came down from atop the business tower at 50 W. San Fernando St. earlier this year. Its four-letter replacement—KQED—is a

sign of public radio’s commitment to Silicon Valley and an indication that high quality-news still has a place in the post-truth era. You, dear Metro reader, already knew that, of course.

Though it’s no surprise to those who’ve been paying attention, Silicon Valley will have no shortage of great theater and performing art in 2017. In November, San Jose State resurrected the HAMMER THEATRE CENTER, taking control of the former home base of the San Jose Rep. Under the direction of the university, Hammer has already staged Corridos the Remix, a simulcast screening of National Theatre Live’s production of Hamlet, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, and two additional productions. And we can’t forget to mention the great

array of stage companies—from the big organizations like THEATREWORKS SILICON VALLEY and BROADWAY SAN JOSE, to the myriad black box outfits, like SAN JOSE STAGE, CITY LIGHTS, THE PEAR and PALO ALTO PLAYERS. And then there’s the music. So much music!

THE RITZ, which first opened in April of 2015, is turning into the club we all hoped it would. This winter, founder COREY O’BRIEN told Metro that he was “finally happy” with the bookings he and his team were securing for the SoFA venue.

He’s not alone. On Dec. 1, the globetrotting EDM and dancehall superstar DIPLO rocked the house, and the coming year’s schedule of shows feature acts that previously would have played Oakland or San

Francisco—including HIGH ON FIRE and CHICANO BATMAN. City National Civic is also branching out beyond classic rock acts, bringing RUN THE JEWELS to downtown San Jose on Feb. 2, and the biggest name in R&B, THE WEEKND, is keeping the promise he made at SAP Center when he played there last December. “I’ve never been here before,” Abel Tesfaye told the screaming throng last year. “But you guys are showing so much love. I don’t think I’m gonna skip this city ever… ever.” The Weeknd returns to the Shark Tank on April 28.

So, yeah, let’s raise a toast to the New Year and all the amazing memories to come. Here’s to you, Silicon Valley.

Make no mistake: Lil Debbie packs a whole lot of attitude into her tight little frame. ‘The New School Ballet production is as imaginative as it is captivating’

‘San Jose Nutcracker’ localizes classic holiday ballet

HE NEW BALLET School endeavors to put a South Bay spin on the world’s most popular ballet, with delightful results in The San Jose Nutcracker.

In a collaborative effort between History San Jose, Casa De Fruta and other local organizations, Dalia Rawson’s fledgling ballet company has produced a rendition of The Nutcracker imbued with a uniquely

San Jose flavor that succeeds in fusing the memorable with the familiar.

As a preamble, Elizabeth Hutter, the school’s primary coordinator, reads the familiar, reframing the plot with the sights and vibes of historic San Jose (referred to by its pre-Silicon Valley moniker: “The Valley of Heart’s Delight”). The curtain rises and a giant projection flashes the year 1905 and a number of colored renderings of downtown—including the famed electric light tower as its centerpiece.

At once it’s off into the lively family home of Clara (played by Mesa Burdick), a young and precocious girl who is being visited by her Uncle Nikola (played by Francisco Preciado)

sheer endurance—and Rachel Winter, the Diamondback Rattlesnake, for her contortionist’s flexibility and air of mystical poise.

And all of this occurs in a wonderfully realized world. The aesthetic organization of the show, through setting and lighting, is spare yet bold—colored with a kind of beautiful Yuletide psychedelia. It really breathes a believability and familiarity into the different worlds Clara encounters.

with characteristic grandiosity. He gives Clara a wooden nutcracker, which sparks her imagination— sending her into a dream world of bountiful orchards, giant mice, animated snowflakes and prancing sugar plum fairies.

This show is as imaginative as it is captivating. The New Ballet School’s loose and lively transformation hits all the traditional Nutcracker marks and still finds room to get playful.

The performers, who range in age from toddler to teacher, work beautifully in lockstep, showcasing the abilities of The New Ballet School’s students as well as blurring the lines between instructor and student.

Although all of the performers were on cue and thrived in both solo and corps, the standout performances belong to Mesa Burdick as Clara—for her physical sense of wonder and

Ultimately, this show’s captivating success comes down to the meticulous and inspired vision of The New Ballet School’s executive director and choreographer, Dalia Rawson. The routines were intricate, graceful— oftentimes unfurling into each other in remarkably fluid transition. It’s amazing, when you consider that these are mostly schoolchildren. Under her direction, the performers were emotive, skilled, and expressive—yet never nervous. Combining a stage confidence with an underlying sense of discipline speaks to Rawson’s leadership and stage experience.

The “Valley of Heart’s Delight” version of “The Nutcracker” is a fun and highly finessed production, and reflects the high level of skill and professionalism of the New Ballet School, still less than a year old. Expect exciting things from the organization in the future.

DALÍ’S A CROWD A crowded gallery layout, gaudy frames add up to a poorly executed Dalí exhibit in Monterey.

Surrealistic Melee THE PICASSO museum to end all Picasso museums is the one located in the Hôtel Salé in Paris. Someday soon when Picasso himself rises from the dead to inspect the state of his oeuvre, he’ll make a beeline to the Musée Picasso on the rue de Thorigny. The artist will find his paintings and sculptures displayed in thoughtfully curated rooms filled with light. As a spectator, he’ll be able to take in each work of art within a contemplative space. Like the other visitors there, the undead Picasso will stand, arms akimbo, as he recalls his Blue Period or any number of self-portraits.

But on that eerie night when Salvador Dalí revivifies his own heartbeat, paying a visit to Dalí17 would surely cause his erect and infamous mustache to suffer from a severe and persistent droop. To the uninitiated, Dalí17 is not a museum. Rather, it’s a private collection Dalí17 of lithographs and etchings on congested display in the building that formerly housed the Monterey History 5 Custom and Maritime Museum. Aesthetically—and, since the House Plaza artist trucked in the murky corners of his unconscious life, Monterey perhaps appropriately—it’s a nightmare.

From the entrance hall, what catches the eye at first is Dalí17’s approach to the use of space. The walls themselves are painted in a heavy shade of gray, reminiscent of the color that rises from a factory smokestack. Upon this off-putting facade, there’s a terrible uniformity in the placement, size and style of the frames. Rows and rows of lithographs are stacked on top of and next to each other with barely centimeters to spare. The phrase “less is more” is left for burning.

Almost without exception, each lithograph is surrounded by a white mounting board, the kind frequently suggested at unimaginative frame shops. As for the frames themselves, they make a single statement repeated endlessly, and it’s one told in rococo filigrees of bronze and gold. To say they detract from the works themselves is an understatement.

The curators of Dalí17 didn’t have enough confidence in the original lithographs to allow the works to speak for themselves, or they were overconfident in their framing tastes. In either case, Dalí’s work suffers as the eye strains to compete with the busy walls and the brashness of every frame. Many of the galleries are arranged by Dalí’s literary influences.

It is fascinating to learn that they range from Cervantes’ Don Quixote to Isidore-Lucien Ducasse’s Les Chants de Maldoror. This discovery, though, inspires a trip to the library, rather than encouraging a visitor to stay and gaze and linger. —Jeffrey Edalatpour

ROY MAXSON IS a 53-year-old Pittsburgh garbageman. In his earlier years, he was a Negro League player on the Homestead Grays. He’d hit seven homers off Satchel Paige himself. Roberto Clemente is starting to make a name for himself on the Bucks. But the desegregation of Major League Baseball is no consolation to the protagonist of August Wilson’s Fences—directed with surpassing power and precision by the man playing Troy, Denzel Washington.

This particularly acute study of a man whose life slips out of his hands isn’t a one-thing-after-another melodrama. Wilson’s script shows Maxson on a series of Friday nights, when the man is exulting, full of payday bluster and a little gin. “You got more stories than the devil got sinners,” says his best pal, Bono (Stephen Henderson).

For a tragedy, Fences is often at least as much fun as The Honeymooners TV show. Troy is exuberant. He’s rising. It’s not so bad for him. Troy has a house, a backyard, a union card. He has a wife of 18 years, Rose (Viola Davis, brilliant) whom he loves, in his own fashion.

A man who is denied respect in the public sphere, he demands familial respect at the cost of everything else.

He describes penetrating Rose as “blasting a hole in forever.” It’s sex and

love as annihilation; it’s not affection Troy seeks, it’s oblivion.

Washington won a Tony in 2010 for reviving the role of Troy, which James Earl Jones originated in 1987.

But it’s thoroughly adapted from its Broadway source material. It’s not a bludgeoning, oversized performance.

When he goes big, hollering like Tarzan, or chasing his flustered wife around the porch, it’s in contrast to the intimate, homicidal hiss of Troy laying into his son, Cory (Jovan Adepo), harassing him like a drill sergeant. Troy crushes his son’s dreams, as a way of “learning” him, toughening him up. Satisfyingly, this doesn’t “make a man out of him”; when Cory finally becomes a man, at the end of the movie, the marks of the spirit-crushing still show.

Maybe the production design softens the edges. Fences is set about 1955, with a coda in the early 1960s.

We’re looking into what is now the long past, and it’s gilded and misty.

orchestral, more Max Steiner than R&B. Neighborhood kids play stickball in the streets, and the PPG tower is half-visible on the cloudy horizon.

The skyscraper looks exactly as it was designed to look, like a Gothic castle.

In the distance, you can hear the sirens announcing the changing of the shifts at the factories. In Charlotte Bruus Christensen’s cinematography, the weathered bricks in the Maxsons’ backyard are welcoming, with soft, varied hues and textures, creamy pinks and carmines. It’s not what you’d expect from a ghetto—it’s charming.

But when your inner landscape never changes, what do surroundings matter? Troy’s damage is already done, and it’s irreversible. Washington has been doing dutiful, strong-silent sullenhero work lately. His Oscar-winning Flight was a respectable drunkalogue but not very interesting. He takes up Fences fresh off his role as the stolid ringleader of the Magnificent Seven—as dust-proof and bulletproof as a 60-ish movie star could be. His Troy Maxon breaks away from this commercial work. It’s the performance of the year, and maybe the performance of Washington’s career.

As a play, Fences has its downside— Gabriel (Mykelti Williamson), Troy’s brother, is a holy fool character. He keeps wandering in, raving about heaven’s gates. Gabriel is a benign counterpoint to Troy’s own celestial fantasies of besting the devil and wrestling death; it is a fanciful, repetitive performance.

Three brilliant acts are followed by a very conciliatory coda, with the assurance of heaven. Maxson is a character of prime importance in the American theater, up there with Stanley Kowalski and Willy Loman. You can tell that these are Wilson’s influences. (Troy even yells for his wife like Stanley yells for his Stella). The model for the selftaught Wilson’s ending is probably the closing of Uncle Vanya, promising peace to the misbegotten, the dispossessed. It’s hard to swap this promise of mercy in the sky for the last we see of Troy: ruined but defiant, shouldered bat, game face on, waiting for the pitch.

Lee Pardini Trio returns to San Jose to play free show at Café Stritch

OCALS WATCHING Jimmy Kimmel Live last month might have noticed a familiar face.

On Nov. 14, sitting behind the keyboards for L.A.-based folkrock group Dawes, was San Jose native Lee Pardini.

“It’s been an incredible experience for sure,” Pardini says of his new day job. Starting in January, the group will be embarking on a full U.S. tour with their newest member, the 31-year-old Pardini. The band’s last record, We’re All Gonna Die, was

included in Rolling Stone’s 50 Best Albums of 2016.

But before Pardini hits the road with Dawes next year, he comes back to San Jose for a one-off gig at Café Stritch with his long-running jazz group, the Lee Pardini Trio. Consisting of Pardini on keys, Joe Costantini on bass and Kevin Higuchi on drums, all three are originally from San Jose and represent some of the most active gigging musicians the city has produced.

Since moving to L.A. at the start of 2010, Pardini has played on Leno, CBS This Morning, and most recently on Kimmel. Higuchi lent a hand on Jeff Rosenstock’s November release, Worry., which received an 8.0 from Pitchfork, landed at No.

2 on Billboard’s Alternative New Artist chart and was USA Today’s No. 1 Album of the Year. Constantini, for his part, has put in time with San Jose jazz mainstay Wally Schnalle’s group, Idiot Fish, and gigged with many other veteran Bay Area musicians.

The trio is the result of three serious music heads coming together, all of whom are interested in keeping jazz music on the edge. When asked about his influences, Pardini cites fusion legends Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea, classic songwriters like Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn, as well as contemporary avant garde musicians like Kneebody, Dawn of Midi and Radiohead.

“Kevin and I were hanging out the other day, and half the time we’re hanging out we’re playing DJ, just going back and forth like ‘have you heard this, have you heard that?’”

Pardini says.

All three bandmates used to live

in the same house in San Jose’s Japantown. “It was a really creative time,” Pardini says. “We would get up in the morning, we’d jam, we’d go do whatever gigs we had to do, and then come back, play a gig downtown somewhere. It was a really nice time.”

But the increased cost of living, and the closure of many crucial music venues downtown (notably both The Voodoo Lounge, and the SoFA Lounge), caused all three musicians to seek more reliable work elsewhere: Pardini left for L.A., Higuchi went further south to San Diego, and Costantini moved north to Oakland.

Stritch, at least, is one of the few reliable venues in the city of 1 million people.

“I was incredibly excited to hear that the Café Eulipia [became] Café Stritch,” Pardini says. “It’s become a really coveted jazz venue. I know a lot of players down here in L.A. that when they book shows up the coast, Café Stritch is one of the main places they play.”

Though San Jose has clearly struggled to offer support to its musicians, it has at least always been supportive of jazz as a genre. Pardini cites the childhood influence of his second piano teacher as opening him up to the classically American music style.

“I didn’t know much about jazz, so he kind of took the reins and really got me into it, showing me records, and different ways of thinking about playing,” Pardini says. “He was definitely an important figure for me as a piano player. We would work on writing original music—he was the first person to encourage me doing that. I think that education from him has carried all the way through until now for sure.”

And though the building where he once took lessons is now gone, the influence, experience, and dedication have stuck with him over the years.

“Kevin and I, we do music.

And that’s what we do,” he says, confidently. “After five or six years, coming back and playing together again, we’ve only gotten better. Our focus has only grown as we’ve grown.

It’s gonna be a nice night of music.”

MUMS THE WORD After a successful solo show, Will Sprott of The Mumlers got the band back together.

The Mumlers Reunite BACK IN AUGUST, Seattle-based band La Luz headlined The Ritz, but they weren’t the main attraction. That’s not to throw shade at the indie rock quartet, who play an infectious brand of lo-fi surf-psych. It’s just hard to compete with Will Sprott in this town.

The lanky and soft-spoken Sprott, who was providing direct support to La Luz that night, clearly boasted the larger draw. It’s little wonder folks were excited to see him play. As the former frontman for The Mumlers, he was the face of one of the best bands to come out of San Jose in the past decade— right up there with Dredg and The Limousines.

“What can I say?” Sprott says. “San Jose has always been really, really good to The Mumlers. It feels good that people still care and are interested. We appreciate it.”

It’s likely that many were drawn to The Ritz that night with the hope that Sprott would reunite The Mumlers. And though he didn’t bring out the entire ensemble, he did call up some of his old crew for a few Mumlers numbers. The gathered crowd responded with loud, ecstatic cheers.

Sprott says that the enthusiasm of the audience—along with the urging of The Ritz’s owner, Corey O’Brien—led him to reach out to the original Mumlers lineup to see if they might come together for a reunion show.

The answer was yes.

The Mumlers are playing their first show together in years this week at The Ritz. “This original line up hasn’t played together for a really long time, reaching back to something like 2008,” Sprott says. “We’re all really excited.”

Speaking from his newly adopted home of Los Angeles late last week, Sprott was still unsure exactly what he and the rest of the band would play, noting that he had only just begun rehearsing some of the Mumlers material and making sure he still remembers the words. He says fans can expect the band to play material from both Mumlers full-lengths— Thickets and Stitches and Don’t Throw Me Away.

“It’s been nice to go back and revisit those old friends,” he says, referring to the Mumlers songs he hasn’t played in so long.—Nick Veronin

I’d like to lose weight in that area. However, my boyfriend LOVES my butt and told me there’s research that says girls with bigger butts are smarter and healthier. Is that true? That can’t be true.—Tushy Galore Welcome to the science-inspired catcall: “Woooo, girl…you look like a nuclear physicist in them hot pants!”

Yes, there seems to be a cognitive edge in being a woman with a big caboose— provided you have a low “waist-to-hip ratio.” That’s professor-speak for women who have small waists relative to their hips—an “hourglass figure” like yours, as opposed to a body that’s more No. 2 pencil-esque or beerguttylicious.

Epidemiologist William Lassek and anthropologist Steven Gaulin find that being voluptuous in the way you are is associated with both being a bit smarter and having smarter children. To understand why starts with understanding “parent-offspring conflict,” evolutionary biologist Robert Trivers’ term for how it’s in each child’s genetic interest to suck as much in the way of resources out of their parent as they can.

Which is to say a fetus is a little hog.

It hoovers up its share of nutrients and then may go after some of its mother’s share, too. “Hey, Ma, enjoy the gestational diabetes!”

Lassek and Gaulin note that this competition for resources is especially rough on teen mommies, whose own brains are still developing. Both the teen mother-to-be and her child are prone to having their cognitive development “impaired”—irreversibly diminished from what it could be—when she’s forced to compete for a limited supply of nutrients with the fast-growing fetusmonster.

However, Lassek and Gaulin find that women with bodies like yours seem to be cushioned against this cognitive impairment, apparently because the butt and hip area serves as a supplemental food storage locker for the developing fetus. There’s a special kind of fat that gets deposited in this area—gluteofemoral fat.

This booty fat is different from and healthier than belly fat. It’s loaded with omega-3 fatty acids— especially DHA, docosahexaenoic acid—which we can only get from things we ingest, like seafood, walnuts, cooked spinach, and krill oil supplements. DHA is essential for day-to-day cognitive functioning

in all people. And, Gaulin emphasized to me, it’s “the most important brain building resource” for little fetus people.

He and Lassek controlled for things like parents’ income and education and the number of dollars spent per student and found mothers’ higher DHA to be the strongest predictor of kids scoring significantly higher on tests in math, reading, and science.

You’re packing more DHA than a woman who carries her fat Santastyle, but any woman can increase her DHA through diet, especially by eating fish. As for your desire to shave off some of Mount Buttmore, bad news: Gluteofemoral fat is extremely resistant to weight loss.

But to lose weight overall, while feeding your brain and protecting it from cognitive decline, consider this from Lassek and Gaulin’s book, “Why Women Need Fat”: “The single dietary factor most strongly related to women’s weight gain was the amount of omega-6 linoleic acid in their diet.”

A major source of omega-6 is factory Frankenstein oils—polyunsaturated, heat-processed seed oils like soybean, sunflower, corn, and canola. (Extra-virgin olive oil is healthy—an omega-3 source.)

And, surprise! Eating fish cooked in these omega-6-packed Franken-oils makes us “unlikely to retain the valuable omega-3 present in the fish.”

So, it seems you owe your back end an apology. Maybe you were swayed in what you find attractive by the cadaverishly thin women that faint on the catwalk. Consider that you may be confusing body weight and booty shape in how self-conscious you feel about your behindquarters.

Now, whether men prefer heavier or slimmer women varies by culture.

However, the late evolutionary psychologist Devendra Singh found that men across cultures overwhelmingly are hotter for the smarter-baby-producing hourglass bod that you have.

Instead of longing for a body type that men don’t find as sexy, maybe resolve to start appreciating what you have.

Meet San Jose’s first bohemian rock star, A.D.M. Cooper

N 1909, EAST SAN JOSE was a separate town from San Jose proper. What's now the intersection of 21st and San Antonio was the intersection of Jones and Franklin, just a few blocks east of Coyote Creek. At this corner, the Egyptian-style studio of San Jose's most famous painter, Astley D.M. Cooper, came to life. Born in St. Louis in 1856, Cooper arrived in East San Jose in 1886, and then spent the rest of his life here, before dying in 1924 at the age of 68.

Throughout nearly four decades in San Jose, Cooper blossomed into the young town's bon vivant and possibly its first-ever bohemian rock-star artist, working with a variety of subjects. His heroic portrayals of indigenous peoples, frontier life and the diminishing buffalo population cemented his reputation as a formidable painter of the American West. As an illustrator, his years drawing for Frank Leslie's Newspaper earned him a reputation from coast to coast.

Cooper's large-scale works, sometimes 12 feet in length, traveled to expositions and department stores across the country, drawing hundreds of thousands of casual viewers to his work. In addition to Old West scenes, he painted allegorical and mythological imagery plus many good old-fashioned nudes. In the latter case, local saloons throughout

Northern California displayed Cooper's more risque paintings. Legend has it he paid off his bar tabs with paintings of topless women.

Nothing cemented such epic status more than the ambitious Egyptian-style studio Cooper commissioned in 1909 at Franklin Street and Jones Avenue, an entirely separate building from the house in which he lived a few blocks over. Architect Frederic Thompson designed the building, taking inspiration from other structures he created for the 1901 Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York.

It was in Buffalo, on the exposition midway, where an Egyptian-style building, Cleopatra's Temple, featured several Cooper paintings along with intentionally ludicrous freakshow-style testimonials outside on a placard. Such fun-house aesthetics were common on the exposition midways of the day, resulting in tremendous fanfare for Cooper’s paintings. Cooper’s San Jose studio, realized by Thompson as a scaled-down replica of an authentic

Egyptian temple, was unlike anything the young town of San Jose had ever seen. This was 18 years before the Rosicrucians showed up and built their complex at Park & Naglee.

Cooper was a natural-born showman, an avant-garde aesthete far ahead of the locals, so when he first opened his exotic studio to the public, the media ate it up. On Nov. 7, 1909, the San Jose Herald articulated the scene: “A tall brazier burning pitch in the yard lighted the way for the guests approaching the portals of the temple.” Regarding the accoutrements inside, “Ra, Apis and other divinities of an ancient civilization, surrounded by hieroglyphics and mystic symbols used in Egyptian architecture, looked down from the walls upon a brilliant gathering.”

The press didn't stop there. In May of 1911, San Jose Magazine debuted a column called Beauty Spots of San Jose, the “first in a series of articles dealing with odd and interesting places,” with the author gushing over Cooper's Egyptian temple-style studio: “Simple in architecture, yet grand in its suggestiveness is this studio of one of America's foremost artists, with its broad veranda and its porticos, each bearing a tale or secret of its own, each vie-ing with its neighbor to catch the eye of the many who are constantly visiting this home of art.” Continuing, the author declared that one entire day was not long enough to drink in the joys of Cooper's genius and that listening to Cooper talk about each detail of every single painting on display was an education none could afford to miss, especially, “how instinctively he portrays sunshine and shadow upon the canvas; the expressions and colorings, all blended together to form a likeness of which nature herself might be justly proud.”

By the time Cooper married Charlotte George in 1919, a woman 26 years his junior, he’d forged a substantive path as San Jose’s most famous artist.

Today, anyone drawing on a barroom wall in Silicon Valley probably owes a debt to Astley D.M. Cooper. Likewise, any politician who thinks real estate is more important than the arts in San Jose should be booted out of town, just like in the Old West.

iTalico’s owners have already made their mark on California Avenue with Terun, a beloved gourmet pizzeria just down the street. The new restaurant’s design makes great use of the space, giving it an intimate yet luxe feel. Dinner service is very popular and the staff has proven that experience matters by keeping calm during the chaos of the first few months.

The menu offers a variety of mix and match charcuterie and fromage. From the small plates menu, we could not pass up the Polipo ($13) octopus carpaccio out of sheer curiosity—how can octopus be so thinly sliced and done carpaccio style, which is usually raw? We were extremely pleased when the appetizer arrived with cooked octopus that were compressed together like a sausage then thinly sliced. The drizzle of lemony sauce gave it just the right amount of dressing, but really the dish won with the soft texture of each disc of octopus.

All the pasta dishes sounded wonderful, but we went with ravioli upon the waitress’s recommendation. Other frontrunners were sweet potato gnocchi ($19), a simple Bucatini ($17) and the more exotic Conchiglie al Forno ($20).

Stuffed with pork, beef, and ricotta, the five ravioli ($18) pockets were laid across a streak of tomato, butter and parmigiana sauce. The pasta was supple and cooked al dente and had a fitting proportion of meat filling.

I rarely have ossobuco because it is pricy and hearty. But of the ones I’ve tried, I have loved them all and iTalico’s version is no exception. For $29, the portion is quite large with two slow-braised, crosscut veal shanks drenched in a thick, savory stew. Words can’t describe how soft the pieces of meat were and the richness of the sauce. All this sat atop creamy polenta cooked just right. It was a dish definitely worth its price and great for sharing.

For dessert, the trifle ($10) provided the perfect balance of sweet crème and fresh wild berries over moist sponge cake. It was served in a cocktail glass and dusted with cocoa powder.

I suspect the staff has experience from Terun and the potential to iron out any kinks in the coming months. If the ossobuco and ravioli were any indication, the kitchen has already found its comfort zone. —Ngoc Ngo ITALICO 341 California Ave, Palo Alto. 650.473.9616

MADE MY WAY like a moth toward the glowing streets of downtown San Jose. My senses, flapping and undulating against the lights, assured me that I had reached the edge of the sun, but really I was just bumping up against a dusty light bulb. Such is a moth’s life. We are creatures of the night and, thus, enamored by the light.

But 2016 was a year for darkness, as beacons of hope seemed to extinguish just when we needed them most.

Even we moths had a hard time navigating the dimness.

I walked Santa Clara Street, sharing the paseo with the well-heeled and the shoeless, past the secret fishing hole, the events pavilion, under the Caltrain tracks, and up the steps to Mission Creek Brewing Co. taproom.

It’s an open-air affair, but still quite pleasant on a South Bay December night. The elevated destination has a patio feel. It’s a casual atmosphere that plays well with the scenery. Patrons of Mission Creek, which is connected to a Whole Foods, can relax with an exceptional brew while watching trains pull in and out of Diridon, fans pouring in and out of SAP Center, and cars driving up and down The Alameda.

Mr. Harada, my dear friend and fellow man of terrible housekeeping (M.O.T.H.), assured me he would be present whilst I sipped and reflected. I took a seat at the bar and shook his hand, as Mr. Harada was operating the taps on this day. He recommended a pint of the Punchlist Pale, an excellent choice. Next up, a flight of four: The Lord of Dankness IPA, Plant 51 Porter, Sorta Session IPA and the Bine Life Double IPA, and not necessarily in that order.

Mr. Harada and I had a fine time. We always have a fine time, even if the tides of life are not in synch with our expectations, wants or needs. It’s been like this for more than a decade and a half. Time is an unforgiving wave best surfed with friends.

The upstairs patio of Mission Creek Brewing Co. is a venue ripe for reflection. Take a hike up the stairs and down memory lane. Like De Niro’s character Michael "Mike" Vronsky says in The Deer Hunter, “this, is this.” We are who we are, like it or not.
