Luxury Tenement One South Market, the blue Mid Century Modern-style 23-story apartment tower in the heart of San Jose, was the city’s first high-rise to go up after the Great Recession. Elected officials gave developer KT Properties of Cupertino a $750K tax break on the building, which architects called “a feel-good fusion of luxury and sustainability.” But the glitz is all a façade, according to several residents who moved in right after the place opened last year.

HOLLY WALLACE, the former marketing director for San Jose Jazz, called it “a high-priced ghetto high rise.” Wallace paid $2,230 a month for her ninth-floor studio before breaking her lease to move to Los Angeles. “I’ve lived in a lot of places and this place is just a nightmare,” she said. In her resignation letter to the jazz company, she noted that her living situation had become too unbearable. “The problems were endless,” she tells Fly. Where to start? Social media reviews echo those same gripes, which may stem from a rush to fill the place as quickly as possible. Essex Property Trust, the company that manages the property, declined to discuss the complaints with Fly. “We have a policy to not comment on tenant issues,” Essex spokeswoman EMILY WIESNER said in a quick, curt phone call. “That’s confidential.”

Management seems to have improved, Haney says, but he’s about to relocate to another downtown apartment anyway.

Transgender community honors the fallen, confronts internal ‘elitism’

AN JOSE’S TRANSGENDER community gathered to mourn their dead on Sunday. At a somber ceremony inside the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors chamber, elected officials and community members gathered for the national Trans Day of Remembrance.

Per tradition, readers in black placed long-stem red roses on a podium draped with the trans flag, then read the names of 99 of this year’s victims as their faces flashed on screens above. One reader broke down and had to let organizer Aejaie Franciscus finish reading for her.

resident with a pink-orange bob, came to the memorial because one of her friends was egged last week.

“It’s scary to be ourselves, but visibility is important,” she said.

“When everyone knows we’re people, too, it’ll be harder to just murder us and leave us in the streets.”

2016 marked the deadliest year on record for trans people, even before President-elect Donald Trump and his anti-LGBTQ coalition started prepping to move into the White House. As of Nov. 10, 23 trans people had been killed in the United States—most of them trans women of color—out of almost 300 murders across the globe.

County Supervisor Dave Cortese called the deaths “a worldwide holocaust.”

Nori Herras, a longtime activist and out trans woman, called Nov. 20 “one of the few days of the year that you’ll see a gathering of trans women

in public, because many of them don’t feel safe leaving the house.”

Santa Clara County has modeled itself as a beacon of inclusivity, and this year it became one of just three counties in the country to create an Office of LGBTQ Affairs. In March, the county became the first in the nation to raise the pink and blue transgender pride flag.

“Our county is responsive to the needs of our community,” said Maribel Martinez, who identifies as queer.

She heads the new county office, a cosponsor of the memorial with the Billy DeFrank Center, an LGBTQ nonprofit in San Jose founded in 1981.

But even in Silicon Valley, which has a more “conservative” LGBTQ population than, say, San Francisco, many trans people still live in fear.

“As a trans person of color, I do not feel safe enough outside of work to be out,” said Frank Peña, a youth outreach worker at the LGBTQ Youth Space in downtown San Jose. He added that the election has resulted in a drop in attendance at the Youth Space. “Our numbers are down. People are staying home.”

Community Split?

Advocates estimate that Santa Clara County is home to about 3,500 trans people, who are notoriously “hard to find,” according to Herras, who for 13 years did outreach for the Billy DeFrank Center. Much of work included talking to “the girls”—trans women—in bars and clubs. Herras left her position last year and the DeFrank Center lost its only trans employee.

All but a few of the trans people killed by violence this year were people of color, but both organizers of this year’s event and all but a few of the speakers were white. For the past 11 years, Herras, who is multiracial, had organized the event. “It was for the community,” she said. “It was for us primarily, to mourn our brethren.”

This year, the event moved to the towering county building because organizers wanted a bigger, “more central” venue and to “raise visibility,” according to Martinez. Haney acknowledged that the building, which is across from SJPD headquarters and on the same block as the Department of Corrections, could have been “a bit” intimidating for a group of people with a history of negative interactions with the police, but not enough to forgo a larger venue.

The majority of speaking time went to elected officials, such as county Supervisors Ken Yeager—the first openly gay man to be elected in the county—and Cortese, as well as the latter’s wife, Pattie, who serves on the East Side Union school board. In a stark contrast to San Francisco’s Trans Day of Remembrance, the event did not included Spanish translation and no outreach was conducted to Spanish

speakers in San Jose, despite this region’s larger Latino population.

Before she left the DeFrank Center last year, Herras ran the Trans Powerment group, a support group for Spanish- and English-speaking trans women. She had been an HIV tester, given out condoms at malls and run the seniors group, all the while mentoring her “kids,” newly out trans women who needed a mentor.

But in September 2015, Herras said, the DeFrank Center board changed a policy that stopped drop-ins, instead requiring people to make appointments to see her. In December, she left the center over what she called “white elitism” among the board.

Gabrielle Antolovich, the lesbian president of the DeFrank Center, insists that she and the DeFrank Center board support trans women of color. “I’ve been extremely inclusive and asked for them to come” to the support group, Antolovich said. “We make sure we greet them. I’ve gone out of my way to do that.”

After the election, the DeFrank Center held a group conversation that was attended by 60 people. On Facebook, the center’s top two action items were to donate to the center and attend Gay Bingo, as well as calling on supporters to wear safety pins.

The Youth Space, by comparison, organized a Nov. 19 workshop for trans youth and adults who want to legally change their names before Inauguration Day. More than 30 people attended from as far away as Hollister, seeking legal counsel to begin the process of matching their ID with their new gender and the name they wish to be called.

“Young people are really good at organizing,” Peña said with a laugh.

The process can be prohibitively expensive—up to $500 for the legal name change, new identification and copies of the paperwork. Many trans people, who struggle to find work because of their gender presentation, do not have that kind of cash on hand.

Alexia Nuñez, 38, attended both the Youth Space workshop and the Trans Day of Remembrance. She read from the list of names of the dead “in hopes of honoring those who chose to live their lives on their own terms,” she said. Nuñez identifies as trans as a way of showing that she doesn’t “live in the shadows.”

Peña was equally steadfast. “We might be in survival mode, but we’re not going back,” he said.

For all the flag raisings and speeches of well-intentioned allies, trans people in Silicon Valley are struggling. Trans women often have a harder time getting hired because of lingering stigma. If the Affordable Care Act is repealed, as President-elect Trump campaigned to do, many trans people will lose access to health care and hormones, since they are more likely to be uninsured than the rest of the country. One Voice: On-Campus Sexual Assaults Put in Spotlight

BY TAYLOR JONES Sharon Stone nearly choked up Friday while reading the words of Emily Doe, a young woman who was unconscious when she was raped at a party on the Stanford University campus nearly two years ago.

Stone, an award-winning actress and activist, read the heart-wrenching letter at One Voice, an event organized by District Attorney Jeff Rosen and held on the Santa Clara University campus. The goal of the day was to combat sexual assaults on college campuses, and to create an environment that encourages victims to speak out and gives them the benefit of the doubt.

“It has been some months since I was sitting in court, listening to Emily Doe address her attacker face to face,” Rosen said, noting the sentencing hearing for Stanford

swimmer Brock Turner, who spent just three months in jail for raping Doe. “Her words have echoed from that courtroom in Palo Alto to across the world. It brought us to talk, listen and learn how to combat campus sexual assault.”

Other speakers included Congresswoman Jackie Speier, who criticized how poorly sexual assault victims are often treated. Speier noted examples of incidents on college campuses where she tried to help victims, and in some cases the schools involved were more concerned with protecting the rapists than the victims.

“There are women and men across this country every single day that endure the same fate as Emily Doe,” Speier said. “I have talked to many of these people. All the studies that

have been done clearly illustrate that 95 percent of those who come forward and report being sexually assaulted are telling the truth.”

Doe’s letter was published by The Washington Post, Buzzfeed and many other outlets, helping to raise national attention to how victims of sexual assault are treated by their rapists, the media and, in most cases, universities that went into damage control.

The average number of sexual assaults that are reported hovers between 15.8 and 35 percent, according to the Maryland Coalition Against Sexual Assault.

The organization also suggests that women and men who have been sexually assaulted usually don’t come forward due to a fear of reprisal or being re-victimized by the criminal justice system.

7 Recounts Expected for County Election After trading the lead several times with her opponent, Sylvia Arenas finished 88 votes ahead of Jimmy Nguyen in San Jose’s District 8 City Council race.

The results are close enough to prompt a manual automatic recount of the 34,220 votes, which will start next Tuesday. But it’s safe to call a victory for Arenas, who will succeed Vice Mayor Rose Herrera.

The Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters (ROV) requires a second count when the margin between two Sylvia Arenas candidates falls within 0.5 percent. Six races in addition to the one in D8 required a recount this year, according to ROV spokeswoman Anita Torres.

One of those contests heading for a recount is the one between Santa Clara’s elected police Chief Michael Sellers and Sgt. Pat Nikolai, who trails the incumbent by 68 votes.

Sellers has 31 years of experience in the city’s police department, but his rank-and-file officers would rather see him replaced. Just before the election, Santa Clara’s police union gave Sellers a vote of no confidence.

The Santa Clara Police Officers’ Association charged Sellers with a lack of honesty and accountability in responding to concerns about whether taxpayer money was improperly spent on policing Levi’s Stadium.

Recounts may also be required for city councils in Gilroy (between Paul Kloecker and Tom Fischer), Los Altos (Roger Spreen and Garo Kiremidjian) and Monte Sereno (Rowena Turner and Lon Allan), as well as for Gilroy Unified School District (BC Doyle and Paul Nadeau) and a bond measure in San Jose Unified.

Lithography—the art of printmaking with oil and water over metal or stone—was invented in the late 1700s to duplicate scripts and mass-produce advertising. But the practice quickly spun off into its own art form. San Jose’s School of Visual Philosophy, an art studio in San Jose’s eccentric Delmas Park neighborhood, offers lithography classes for $350 per pupil. No experience is required for the course, which introduces students to stone as well as aluminum plate lithography. The art school, which was founded in 2013 by husband-and-wife duo Yori and Dana Seeger, also offers workshops in woodworking, letterpress and sculpting with bronze, cement, paper and clay, among other media.

Balancing a strong sense for pop songwriting and technical musicianship, they craft tracks that are catchy, slickly produced and still full of surprising turns. Since returning from a North American sojourn in support of their excellent Play Pretend EP, A Yawn Worth Yelling have been mostly laying low—playing a few shows here and there. Based on the hit 2003 British comedy, which itself was based on a true story, Calendar Girls follows a group of senior Yorkshire women who, after the death of one member’s husband, from leukemia, find an unconventional and exhibitionist way to raise money for cancer research—printing and selling nude calendars of themselves.

Dark Impressions CATCH A FIRE Centuries before photography, printmakers documented the world with reproducible etchings.

Exhibit of Dutch Prints showcases Rembrandt’s darker side

A

T THE BEGINNING of the year, the river that runs through the town freezes over. People skate across the ice or push their friends in toboggans.

The January sky is dotted with black birds in flight.

Barren limbed trees bend in the wind. One woman with a high starched collar warms her hands in a muff.

She alone stares directly into the eyes of the artist Jan van de Velde II, the

most arresting character in his series of prints The Twelve Months 1616.

You’ll find her In a small dimly lit upstairs gallery at the Cantor Arts Center. The exhibition The Wonder of Everyday LIfe: Dutch Golden Age Prints is an intimate celebration of 17th century Dutch artistry. Rembrandt van Rijn is the star player here. Of course you’ll find at least one self-portrait amongst the room full of black and white etchings.

But Self-Portrait with Saskia 1636 suffers against the memory of his oil paintings.

In this starker medium, his religiousthemed prints compel the eye. Two in particular—The Flight into Egypt 1651 and The Star of the Kings: A Night Piece c.

1651—are so black that it looks like ink has accidentally saturated the paper, swallowing up the original image. To

encourage close engagement with the prints, the curators smartly provided several handheld magnifying glasses throughout the gallery. With the glass in hand, secret worlds emerge from inside all that darkness. The unseen narrative reveals itself like a sacred mystery.

Viewers can marvel at the skill with which Rembrandt evokes the feeling of deep night on such a small framed square or rectangle. In comparison, Jan de Baen’s approach in The Burning of the Town Hall in Amsterdam 1652 feels contemporary in its reportorial depiction of a building on fire. After this year’s election season, de Baen’s print is ominously prescient. If it’s not a literal rendering of a government house burning down, it certainly works as a sad and moving allegory of one.

In the midst of these colorless portraits, landscapes and biblical scenes, Johannes Teyler’s A Bird of Paradise and a Lizard 1680-1690 is a brightly hued stand out. In the 1680s, Teyler developed, and patented, a

method to print etchings in color.

The anatomical correctness of his bird and lizard may be questionable, as are their open-mouthed gleeful expressions, but it’s hard to ignore the bird’s rich red breast and the green lizard’s pink tongue. It’s a primitive but delightful precursor to the work of John James Audubon.

But it’s the details of Rembrandt’s portraiture and the bucolic village settings by van de Velde that most emphatically reference the “everyday life” of the show’s title. The Portrait of Jan Uytenbogaert, Preacher of the Remonstrants 1635 is actually two portraits of the preacher placed side by side. Without a magnifying glass, they appear to be the same. With it, there are subtle changes in the shading of the face and clothing. It was typical of artists like Rembrandt to produce a series of “states” that collectors could buy to see the evolution of a particular work. In this case, Uytenbogaert’s status and personality are that much more alive with the slight refinements to his fur-trimmed coat, the ruff around his neck and the shape of his right hand at rest on an open book.

In March, van de Velde’s woman returns to the same position on the print as she did in January, with her upright posture and quizzical gaze. He etches her face like a mask. Her eyes, like black pinpoints, are fixed upon the artist sketching her into a harvest scene.

She isn’t drawn with great complexity but she means something to him.

As the months go by, he shows us an agrarian way of life with groups of people at work and at play. There are sheep, bonfires and carriages. Picnics in fields in summer and autumn. And when December arrives, the river has once again frozen over. This time the woman has her back to us, to the unseen viewer. She’s on the ice holding hands with a man. Is that van de Velde with her or did she find someone else to skate next to her in the cold? In these small but arresting prints, he and the other artists make everyday life in the 17th century look achingly familiar.

THE ARTIST Dashiell Manley paints the front page of yesterday’s newspaper as a blurry, baffling mess. In other words, he reveals a collection of faded headlines for what they are. In the exhibit New to the Cantor: Dashiell Manley, this “front page” series of watercolor pencils on canvas convey, at once, a literal and a figurative sense of a newspaper’s psychic and physical decay. This institutional rot was made manifestly clear during this year’s rancorous New to the Cantor: political season.

Dashiell Manley On 8-foot-tall canvases, Manley, who has an MFA from UCLA and a BFA from the California Institute Thru Apr 24, Free of the Arts, incorporates a day of those headlines into Cantor Arts Center, this series of paintings. The New York Times, Thursday Stanford October 2 2014, national edition Southern California (front page) 2016 contains washes of plum, violet and black. The words themselves are randomly handwritten, horizontally and vertically, and mostly illegible, as intended. The overall effect evokes a Japanese watercolor made in the aftermath of a tsunami. The muted palettes are the same. The tendency toward chaos and muddied abstraction is not.

Manley again attempts to distort the meaning of media in the second of three series in the show: Various sources (quiet satires). On large white backgrounds, he reproduces cartoon images from newspapers on uneven pop-colored grids. He’s adapted some of Basquiat’s lines and squiggles but without his dynamism or intent. Unlike the text-based paintings, Manley doesn’t make the cartoons his own. They sit statically on the canvas neither speaking to each other or the viewer. If they’re simply jokes turned upside down, they remain woefully unexplained.

In a departure from the media focussed work, the Elegy for whatever paintings are lovely experiments in impasto. (a haystack lit from the back) 2016 is not unlike a densely arranged collage. The association with the word haystack may be a stretch, but if you squint and turn your head at the right angle, the colors of sky and field merge and emerge from all those heavy stacks of oil. Manley has even made one in jet black (untitled elegy) 2016. The elegy series is the newest, so it could be an elegy for the news industrial complex. But it also reminded me of the darkest Rembrandt etchings across the hall. Some day Manley might reveal the story hiding underneath all that black. —Jeffrey Edalatpour

Hero Worship SELLING THE WAR All that glitters is not gold in Ang Lee’s dazzling new film, ‘Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk.’

Ang Lee’s excellent ‘Billy Lynn’ explores one soldier’s inner war

B

EN FOUNTAIN’S novel, Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, is a bitter book, but these are bitter times. Given the way it blunts the sharper observations of a bright novel, its adapter—Ang Lee (Life of Pi)—keeps the salt of the earth salty. On the whole, it’s a worthwhile film, often sage, sometimes sweet, and you’d have to be half-way drunk to consider it a dumb flag-waver, though that’s how it looks in the previews.

Private Billy Lynn (Joe Alwyn) was caught on camera trying to rescue a man in his platoon from Iraqi rebels.

The snippet went big on CNN, and Lynn was awarded the Silver Star. He and about a half-dozen of his fellow soldiers are escorted by the sardonic Sergeant Dime (Garrett Hedlund of Sons of Anarchy, never better). They’re making a dog and pony tour to rally people around the war, during the election year 2004. One last stop, before the return to Iraq, is an appearance with Destiny’s Child, at the halftime show at a Thanksgiving Dallas Cowboys game. Beyonce and company’s hit about ghetto warriors, “Soldier,” is going to be repurposed for patriotic ends.

As they mentally prepare for the coming bombardment of PTSD-

aggravating fireworks and bright lights, Lynn and his soldiers drink and meet with the fans. Alone for a second, the boyish, good-hearted Lynn falls for a Cowboy’s cheerleader (Mackenzie Leigh) blushing attractively like the good Christian she is over her sudden desire for this stranger. Meanwhile, Lynn’s sister (a miscast Kristen Stewart) is trying to get Billy out of the Army by hooking him up with a group that helps soldiers go AWOL. Travelling with their entourage is Chris Tucker, as a Hollywood producer trying to get a deal made to adapt the story of Billy and the troops.

Part of this film is about how a war nobody wants to think about is rendered into movies no one wants to watch. But Ang Lee has a limited taste for the comic—notice what little zest Steve Martin brings to the role of the Cowboys’ owner, a waxy, wealthy creep. Martin goes inward with it, robbing the role of size.

Except for the very funny Arturo

Castro of Broad City, who brings a bright twistiness to one of Lynn’s fellow soldiers, all the humor is due to Hedlund’s dry-ice sarcasm. When pushed, Dime expertly threatens a fracking-business yokel (Tim Blake Nelson of O Brother Where Art Thou) in a moment that’s the closest to the anger and the anguish of the novel.

Lee is an immaculate stagesetter—the 1970s period details in his The Ice Storm seem to be right even a block and a half away from the camera. Oddly, Lee doesn’t find a visual equivalent to the Hunter Thompson-worthy description of cheesy ersatz luxury at the soon-tobe-demolished Texas Stadium. Lee shoots Billy Lynn very conservatively with slow pans, and direct to the camera dialogue. (Press in the Bay Area didn’t see Billy Lynn in the 120 frames per second version of Lee’s film; the high frame rate may have given more surreal depth of field to the war scenes, maybe more power to startle.)

The novel treated the war as something a young man wanted to put out of his mind, as far as he could, and as forcibly as possible. But war movies are traditionally shaped like monster movies—both genres wait until the end to show you the beast. Vin Diesel brings all his fleshy warmth to the part of the sacrificial soldier Shroom, with his Zen-like command of life; the worst day in Billy Lynn’s life comes in a flashback during the finale, to cap the movie.

Some war memoirs record the feelings of soldiers coming back— describing the smugness of soft civilians, the desire to punch those smiling faces, leering as they beg for bloody details. Billy Lynn captures these harassing, smarmy faces in a montage. It’s inarguably an antiwar movie. But Lynn’s character sometimes comes across as an author’s glove puppet in the book.

The British actor Alwyn is very appealing, and he’ll go places. But Lynn is an all-things-to-all-people conception of a soldier—he can’t quite give this movie a center.

Twice the obscenity, half the laughs. Back with most of the living cast of the 2003 original, including the thickwit Thurman Merman (Brett Kelly), now grown and working as “a full-time sandwich consultant” at a Subway-like chain store. Christina Hendricks of Mad Men is the drunk’s no-strings sex partner; sadly, there’s no sign of the naughty but nice Lauren Graham. This time the drunken reprobate Willie Soke (Billy Bob Thornton) is lured to snowy Chicago for a million-dollar burglary, only to find that his foul and much-hated mother (Kathy Bates) is the mastermind. There are chuckles—Bates is into the profanity up to the neck, and she seems to be having a good time, especially in twoshots with her dejected son. But the fun evaporates fast, and one wants to blame the changing era as much as Mark Waters’ sketchy, irresolute direction— when everyone from Deadpool to the president-elect has been busted saying the same horrible things that the Bad Santa mutters, things seem a little dated.

Thornton, with Van Gogh-gauntness, gets some hideo-comic haunted stares at the women; Tony Cox’s still-spry deviant dwarf pops his eyes at the face-level ass of a plump and teasing security guard (Jenny Zigrino, the lewd best friend in 50 Shades of Black). Mildly funny, but really a victory lap that poops out half way down the track. (RvB)

part is Hughes reciting an Al Jolson routine from memory while spinning a decrepit aircraft in the skies around London, as both Frank and a uniformed British airman (Steve Coogan) try to swallow their mutual terror. The last third of Rules Don’t Apply is all over the map, as Frank and Hughes go on business trips that might as well be vacations.

Jumping from location to location, the movie gets bewildering. Collins’ delightful impertinence, which could be compared to Audrey Hepburn, keeps you on her side. And it’s an an odd sunset performance for Beatty, who shows us Hughes’ last stage, a bedridden wraith with the kind of face you’d only see in a James Ensor painting. When a person makes a movie about the early 1960s, it’s an advantage if he was really there.

Beatty was: the scenery and the dialogue is almost totally anachronism free. Rules Don’t Apply shows how the luxury and the tackiness co-existed in Hollywood, with one of the most expensive hotel rooms in LA making a place for aluminum tv trays and Swanson’s frozen dinners. (RvB)

Every critic has a blind spot, and mine is rape-revenge movies. It’s too easy

to get manipulated, to be roused by the desire to see a rapist’s brains bashed out. They’ve been pulling the lever since, what, Birth of a Nation?

It’s a lose-lose situation for the viewer who doesn’t yearn to let their inner ape out of the cage. (We know there’s violence right under the civilized skin.

It’s not news.) With the exceptions of so few films that it’s hardly worth naming them, rape revenge films having it both ways: you show the violence and then you deplore it under the name of realism. Aside from RoboCop and Total Recall, Paul Verhoeven’s long career has depended on two things. One is attractive bad girls; the other is a superb resistance to common sense. His much-praised Elle is an example, right from the first: a cat’s indifferent face watches the violation of her mistress. It’s a mirror to the audience: watching it, we too have the glassy eyes of the jaded puss. The rapist, dressed in the black burglar suit Diabolique wore in that 1960s movie, bashes Michelle (Isabelle Huppert—one wants to say, “Inevitably, Isabelle Huppert”) and runs away. The French woman doesn’t report the assault, for reasons we learn later, not that they make a hell

of a lot of sense when we do learn them. None of the friends she shocks with the news at a fancy restaurant says something like “maybe you’d want to stop him from raping anyone else.” Actually, Michelle has her own plans, and when the rapist keeps sending her obscene texts, she’s not sure if she wants to beat his head in or have him come back for seconds.

It’s not that you fear for her. Michelle is an icicle, and the list of potential suspects is long: there’s lots of people in her life who’d like to see her in pain.

She’s exhausted with her slacker son and condescending to the common girlfriend that he impregnated. She’s

Warren Beatty’s comeback film is a sometimes bizarre, sometimes winning film about multi-hyphenate billionaire Howard Hughes (Beatty) in 1959 and 1964, in his last days of lucidity before his eccentricities were turning to mania, and before his mania became out and out senility. With maybe the exception of The Loved One (1965), Rules Don’t Apply is the first I can think of to compare and contrast two different elements of Hollywood. It’s about the LA basin’s status as a refuge for old-time religion—later to turn into the spectacle of the mega-church—which juxtaposed with the whorish amorality and fleshy temptations of the movie business. Frank (Alden Ehrenreich, the kindly cowpoke in Hail Caesar) a good church-going Methodist driver in Hughes’s employ.

His new passenger is a beauty queen from Virginia named Marla Mabrey (Lily Collins, the film’s standout). While Marla is a self-respecting Baptist, she harbors a hidden desire to go a little wild. The aged reclusive Hughes (whom neither has got a chance to meet) acts as a kind of bad fairy to complicate things between the religious couple. Beatty’s Hughes is a shadow-dweller, fearless only in the cockpit of a plane; the movie’s funniest

pissed off at her former husband, who is carrying on with a young girl.

She’s a bully at the office where she works, designing extremely graphic video games (“When the player guts an orc, I want him to feel the warm blood on his hands,” Michelle tells her employees.) Yes, Huppert is gifted at this part, just like Joan Crawford was gifted at playing this neurotic witchy kind of role in an earlier era. If Huppert wasn’t skilled at playing such correct, discreet-viciousness-of-thebourgeois characters, Elle wouldn’t have got as far as it did. It can go a lot farther—if it were up to me, it’d go far away. (RvB)

Unplugged BETTER TOGETHER After the dissolution of their previous bands, Paul Kimball and John Blatchford found potency in a stripped-down sound.

Former members of Careless Hearts, The Mumlers form Wax Moon

F

or singer-songwriters Paul Kimball and John Blatchford—the voices behind indie-folk group Wax Moon—making music together has always been about capturing the moment.

From their tendency to play smaller, more intimate shows to their desire to explore the experiential qualities of acoustic sound, their dedication to the craft of live performance is evident in the way they harmonize with each other and their audience.

“We really built Wax Moon around the idea of harmonies and vocals once we discovered that we have a natural blend between our voices,” explains Kimball, the group’s primary songwriter. “Both our sounds have a timbre together that is pleasing, and we discovered that organically and thought, ‘Wow, that’s a good place to start. Not everybody has that.’”

Indeed, not all musicians have as deep roots in the Bay Area’s indie rock scene as Kimball and Blatchford, whose former involvement with local acts like Careless Hearts and The Mumlers placed them in the same musical circles. It wasn’t until their individual musical ventures fizzled out that they joined together as a duo, taking on a predominantly acoustic sound from their previous “bar rock” acts. With Kimball falling into the songwriting

role and Blatchford focusing on harmonies and melodies, the group recorded its first EP, Ready or Not, last winter and just released a second EP, titled Cool Blue Heat, this month.

“I’d say our new EP is more of a companion than a departure from the last record,” Blatchford says.

“We didn’t try to separate the ideas behind the songs; they’ve just been flowing. Instead, we’re trying to capture them as they come.”

Wax Moon is currently gearing up for a house show and record release party in Saratoga, further speaking to their intimate and up-close musical stylings. Playing for a crowd of close friends and fans, Wax Moon will perform songs from their newest release like “Dreams Run Dry,” a somber and poignant number with hints of Americana and folk, and “My Future Crime,” which combines a bluesy guitar rhythm with the soothing confluence of Kimball and Blatchford’s vocals. The band’s preferred performance spaces—house shows, cafes, and even galleries—allow

the pair to experiment with sound and feed off of the audience’s vibe.

“In terms of performing, we’re continuing to experiment, seeing what works and what doesn’t, and we may ultimately decide that the concept of a stripped-down live performance feels right for us, or we might expand things and go in a different direction,” Kimball says. “But right now, we are still supporting the idea that we started out with, which is that live performances are meant to be momentary conjurings of what we put down in recording.”

Pushing each other’s creative limits has also been central to Wax Moon’s success. Both bandmates had to expand into roles they previously never played—becoming equal halves of a cohesive sound. For Blatchford, who had never sung lead in a band before, many of the conceptual ideas about performing front and center had to be worked out individually, from choosing certain textures to incorporate into the music to simplifying chord progressions and harmonies.

“Now that I’ve decided what kinds of sounds fit the band, I’m able to focus on them deeply,” he says. “I hope to expand my musicianship and what I’ve already learned further.”

Though they’ve only played together for a little over a year, Blatchford and Kimball’s vision for their sound—and each other’s musicianship—is clear.

Their ability to creatively push each other’s musical limits has expanded their audience to include types of people they never connected with before, which feels both exciting and refreshing for a duo that’s only just begun their musical journey together.

“It’s been really nice seeing the way people respond to our music, which is very emotionally open and accessible in a way that a lot of the music I’ve played before hasn’t been,” Kimball says. “I really want to keep pushing that, seeing if we can bring more people into the tent of, not just our own stuff, but of appreciating live music in general. I feel like we can help build an audience, not just for ourselves, but for live music as a whole, because we’re looking at things in a different way.”

Eat, drink and get merry on the dance floor this Wednesday and Friday at the 11th annual Give Thanks electronic dance music festival. This year’s party will feature some of the biggest names ever to rock the Give Thanks stage.

Wednesday night’s lineup is headed by Australian electro house and dubstep duo Knife Party, while Friday’s bill is topped

by British trance veteran Oakenfold.

Initially formed as a side project, Knife Party eventually became the fulltime venture of producers Rob Swire and Gareth McGrillen, who first began playing music together in the drum and bass trio Pendulum.

The Knife Party moniker—taken from a Deftones song of the same name— hints at the group’s preferred sonic palate. Swire and McGrillen straddle the line between EDM party starters and heavy metal shredders with rapidfire distorted synths and heavy drops. Recently, the pair collaborated with pioneering guitarist and Rage Against The Machine co-founder Tom Morello on “Battle Sirens”—a stomping, electric guitar-infused one-off single.

If day one of Give Thanks looks to a pair of EDM upstarts, the second day of the festival looks back to rave royalty. Oakenfold began his career in the late 1970s, spinning soul records in bars around London.

Over time he migrated from simply playing music on two turntables, to remixing the music of popular hip-hop, dance and alternative rock artists.

From there he began producing his own music and in 2002 released his debut studio album, Bunkka. To date, the record has moved over a million units and is recognized for pioneering the melding of trance textures with pop songwriting conventions. —Nick Veronin

At least, that’s the way the older couple next to you are likely to see it when he orders his meal first, and that is embarrassing. Sadly, it doesn’t help that feminist academics have deemed customs like women ordering first “benevolent sexism”—casting women as weak and in need of protection and coddling by men (aka patriarchal cockroaches).

Males, throughout human history and throughout the animal kingdom, did evolve to be the protectors and defenders of women. This makes biological sense, considering that women provide a cozy B&B for the developing fetus, plus liquid refreshment and child care after the kid is born. And even a relatively wimpy man is likely to have more muscle mass, upperbody strength, and aggression-energizing testosterone than most women.

A number of modern behavioral protocols come out of these sex differences. For example, there’s how the man’s the one to walk closest to the curb, open the car door, and act as a human shield against a gun-toting mugger— despite how, these days, even the itsybitsiest woman can make quick work of

an attacker with her sparkly “My Little Pony”-emblazoned Smith & Wesson.

The reality is that the psychology driving these customs, which evolved over millions of years, doesn’t just change all “presto gloriasteinemo!” because women now have ways to defend themselves. That’s probably why you feel embarrassed about others’ eyes on you. Evolutionary psychologist Daniel Sznycer, who researches shame, explains that shame is not just a feeling. It seems to be an information management program that evolved to help us protect our reputation. That feel-bad that rises up in us is a signal that we’d better do something pronto to stop our slide down the social totem pole.

As for how to tell your boyfriend, keep in mind that you can school a guy in social customs but you can’t school him in being “a big sweetheart.” Use a compliment as your launchpad—about wonderful things he does for you—and then throw in a “I know you didn’t realize this, but…” This way, it’s not so much a criticism as a pointer on how to make you happier.

And the truth is, if you’re like a lot of women, you might find it sexy when the physical differences between men and women are emphasized in small symbolic ways like this.

I’m a divorced woman in my 40s, and I just started dating again. I’m seriously tired of it already, after just two dates with two really disappointing guys. Annual Tech Awards inspire yet again in troublesome times

T’S SAFE TO assume that hundreds of people left the 16th annual Tech Awards motivated to use technology for the greater global good. In these dark times, the event was a rocksolid reminder that hope is not an illusion.

As such, the Tech Awards gala tends to be one of the more uplifting events of Silicon Valley, highlighting and supporting individuals who work in various international humanitarian projects. People who understand

the global picture. People doing their part to fight world poverty, improve the global environment, empower the underprivileged and make the planet healthier. Laureates receive unrestricted prizes—usually $50,000—for their work in health projects, world hunger, sustainable energy, economic development, education and more.

This year, the event was somewhat different in that only alumni laureates took the stage, with seven previous award-winners talking about progress they’ve made since first being honored. To cite one example, Source International founder and director Flaviano Bianchini was one of the rock stars of the night. After becoming a

laureate in 2014, Bianchini returned to discuss his work fighting human rights abuses suffered by Central and South American villages at the hands of corrupt mining companies.

The companies were polluting soil and water with no accountability whatsoever, resulting in diseases and miscarriages. None of the villagers living near the drilling sites had the tools to prove the amounts of contaminants present, so Source International developed a suite of scientifically validated testing technologies enabling the communities to examine their water, air, and soil for a variety of chemical contaminants, and it trained the villagers how to use the resulting data to go after the mining company.

At the gala last week, Bianchini spoke to how Source International is now involved in 21 cities in 11 countries on five continents.

In other cases, Angaza CEO Lesley Marincola updated the crowd with

details on her company’s project to enable 250,000 people in subSaharan Africa with pay-as-you-go solar power, while Ronni Goldfarb of Equal Access International talked about her company’s endeavors at bringing interactive multimedia broadcasts to underprivileged parts of Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

Historically speaking, the first Tech Awards gala took place in 2001, but it was almost cancelled due to the attacks of September 11. Thankfully, the organizers carried on and made it happen. From there, the event only grew and grew. As of now, almost 300 laureates have received more than $5 million in awards over the last 15 years to collectively improve the lives of more than 2 billion people around the world.

The gala event itself is an inspiring evening to witness.

One gets to sit in the same room with many of the donors, upperechelon technologists, physicians, engineers and social entrepreneurs actually using their wealth to support projects for the global good—projects that really do bring disparate people together rather than raise slimy advertising money from losers spreading fake news.

In addition to the laureates, Tim Ritchie, president and CEO of the Tech Museum, also revealed how the museum is now pivoting to include a year-round program that permanently develops a cadre of young Silicon Valley innovators who wish to likewise focus on technology for greater humane causes. Aptly titled The Tech for Global Good, the program, among other things, will involve exhibits and events at the museum, where anyone, year-round, can drop by and see inspiring work being done by the next generation of globally minded humanitarians, inventors, engineers and scientists. In other words, instead of just a privileged few hundred people getting to attend a gala once a year, now everyone can visit the museum and see what’s going on with these and other related projects, as well as future efforts.

This, in turn, will undoubtedly inspire a whole new pipeline of younger people who want to use technology for the betterment of global society. It’s a great idea.

As always, the Tech Awards provide uplifting vibes amid otherwise darker times. There is hope.

YSTERS: AN aphrodisiac so divine that people risk their lives eating them raw. Jim Stump knows the key to our hearts when it comes to these slippery bivalves. At his latest restaurant, Forthright Oyster Bar and Kitchen, the veteran chef and restaurateur, who also owns The Table in Willow Glen, understands that as much as diners enjoy a tasty half-dozen oysters, they especially enjoy it for happy hour prices every day.

On a recent Sunday escapade to the new eatery in Campbell, happy hour ran a lengthy 2-6pm. The oyster on sale was the Hammersley from Washington for $1.50 each.

They were small, briny and juicy, served with a shallot mignonette and lemon wedges. The six oysters were a satisfying way to whet our appetite for the meal to come.

For cautious eaters, Forthright offers plenty of cooked oyster options such as the fried oyster tacos, buttered roasted oysters, and two versions of oysters Rockefeller. We opted for the original style ($10) made with herbed butter and pernod (anise-flavored liqueur) on top of panko bread crumbs. The oysters were cooked flawlessly, but the panko crumbs had flavor only where the herbed butter

mixture had soaked into it, leaving patches of bland bread crumbs.

The simple menu of small plates, soups and entrees allows for sampling and sharing along with an extensive beer and cocktail selection. The bartender can be seen mixing drinks alongside the chefs cooking in the open kitchen behind the bar, which extends the length of the room. The environment is open and vibrant, lending itself to the staff ’s easy maneuvering to service each guest.

We sat at a window-side table and received excellent service, each dish being served as it was ready, starting with cold items. The Peruvian ceviche ($6) immediately won presentation points for its symmetrical plating of a line of albacore tuna cubes marinated in tiger’s milk dressing and sprinkled with sweet potato and corn. This was a refreshing rendition of the classic Peruvian-style ceviche with all the proper elements. Served at the same time was the tako kimchi poki ($6), which showcased the chef ’s

expert handling of octopus. With an affordable price and delicious taste, this dish is a must-order appetizer.

It wouldn’t be a Jim Stump restaurant if there wasn’t a signature burger. At Forthright, the new version is called The Only Burger That Belongs On The Table (Chris’ Version 1.0). Pairing this juicy burger ($16) with the ultra-crispy Old Bay Fries ($5) was a winning combination.

In many ways, Forthright is a deserving sister restaurant to The Table, but there are key differences.

The genius of Forthright is in the simplicity of its menu. It doesn’t have too many items and has just enough variety of surf and turf, hot and cold, small and large. Diners can easily create a meal of complimentary dishes. For example, the crab cake ($16) would go well with something like the Scotch Egg ($9), which was larger than expected.

In many ways, Forthright is a deserving sister restaurant to The Table, but there are key differences.

This restaurant is in West Campbell with plenty of parking. There are no lines yet and the flexibility of the menu and layout make it a great place to stop off for a dozen oysters at the bar or stay for a full meal. Forthright should be a refreshing change of pace for anyone who has circled the block at Willow Glen only to wait in line at The Table. It has many of the same beloved elements with a menu that leans towards the sea.

L FORNAIO at the Westin Hotel, formerly the historic Hotel Sainte Claire, has been a fixture in downtown San Jose for decades. Its luxurious interior and authentic Italian menu can easily be seen as a one-of-a-kind premium establishment.

In fact, there are actually 23 locations of the Il Fornaio restaurant brand nationwide. The most recent location, in Santa Clara, has just opened its doors in a recent ribboncutting ceremony, making it the fifth restaurant in the Bay Area with others in Palo Alto, Burlingame and San Francisco.

The brand new building was unveiled to a crowd of eager eaters, including Santa Clara Mayor Lisa Gillmor. Hor d’oeuvres and cocktails were served at the bar, where there is a large standing table for communal dining. The bar features a collection of craft beers and signature cocktails like the Rye Smash made with Bulleit Rye Bourbon, Sicilian Sunset made with Casa Noble Tequila, and Rosso Delizioso made with Caliche rum ($12 each). On the opposite wall across the dining room is a floor-to-ceiling wall of Italian and Californian wines which had won a Wine Spectator award. It requires a rolling library ladder to reach the wines and makes an eye-catching focal point in the room. The six options of thin crust Neapolitan style pizzas ($17-21) are baked in a large oven that serves as the hearth of the kitchen and is one of the first things patrons see from the entrance.

For the first time in the company’s 30-year history, a female chef will head one of its restaurants. Chef Leslie Pineda will help bring the brand’s authentic Italian menu to life using fresh ingredients and traditional techniques. The antipasti selection features warm and cold appetizers such as the carpaccio of thinly sliced Certified Piedmontese beef ($15), raised without hormones, steroids or antibiotics. Other highlights on the menu include the Cristina pizza ($21) topped with fresh mozzarella, prosciutto, and drizzled with white truffle oil. The tagliatelle Bolognese ($14 for small, $19 for large) is made with pasta imported from Italy in a tomato and meat sauce. Free range rotisserie chicken in the Insalata di Pollo del Girarrosto dish ($17) can be seen rotating slowly next to the oven in the kitchen.

Santa Clara Square has been a much-anticipated project in the community, opening doors for retailers like Whole Foods and Sur La Table.
