A Facebook alert causes my phone to vibrate. It’s a message from someone who looks familiar but I’m not sure how. I check it despite my better judgment. “Your guitar playing and singing suck. Trust me, I’ve seen guitar players and singers. You should quit and save yourself the embarrassment.” Fair enough. Everyone is entitled to an opinion. Why escalate the hostility? I respond, “You’re right. I’m quitting tomorrow.” Then I click on the icon to get a better picture of this guy and realize it’s someone I went to high school with—not a friend, enemy or even an acquaintance, just someone who shared a couple of classes with me. That was over 15 years ago! I dig around his Facebook page and it’s desolate: a few selfies and links on political views with the only “like” and comments coming from himself. A few days later I come to find out that he’s harassed other classmates who, like me, had very little to no interaction with him. My phone vibrates again. It’s another message asking if I seriously thought I could make it as a singer/ songwriter, and again insisting I quit. I tell him, “Yes. I quit singing and now I quit Facebook.” Blocked.

3 More Weeks Santa Clara voters are under siege. Each week a new accusation of campaign impropriety crops up. Former Mayor PATRICIA MAHAN, again running for a council seat, was called out for failing to register as a lobbyist. Two weeks ago, nonprofit Stand Up for Santa Clara accused the San Francisco 49ers of using shadow group BluePAC to spend tens of thousands of “dark money” against candidates who have criticized the team. Now attorney JOHN MINARIK has filed six complaints with the state’s political watchdog, the Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC).

Mlnarik accused candidates DEBI DAVIS, KATHY WATANABE, TERESA O’NEILL and TINO SILVA of failing to report payments for voter info, campaign websites and advice from JUDE BARRY, a political consultant for Related Companies, which is building the $6.5 billion retail They project City Place next to Did Levi’s Stadium. Barry is What? cozy with current Mayor LISA GILLMOR, who has SEND TIPS TO also been critical of the FLY@ 49ers and endorsed the METRONEWS. COM candidates referred to the FPPC. Mlnarik says he deployed his own law firm’s resources to investigate the candidates without any outside compensation (see 49ers), which is kind of ironic considering his 2014 council campaign was investigated by the FPPC for unfairly using his law firm’s resources. The FPPC said there was “insufficient evidence” to substantiate that complaint. Barry called Mlnarik’s accusations “bullshit,” adding that he is not working on any of the campaigns “in any way shape or form,” but there is no doubt whose side he’s on. (Hint: It’s not the 49ers’.) As it turns out, the real consultant to Davis, Silva and Watanabe is actually GABE FOO, who tells Fly he has held off on billing them because they’re running “grassroots” campaigns. Mlnarik says he also filed complaints against the city’s police union and Stand Up for Santa Clara, but those two couldn’t be confirmed by the FPPC. Santa Clara voters—and, really, all of us— would be wise to remember: three more weeks, three more weeks, three more weeks.

Battle of the Bags FOREVER MORE Zanker Recycling composts wastes for the South Bay, and non-recyclable plastic bag debris is pervasive.

Competing plastic bag propositions complicate progressive agenda

VEN WITH THE windows up, the sour stench of rotting food invades Michael Gross’ car. He drives slowly, slaloming towering piles of trash and mountains of food and household waste. We’re inside Zanker Recycling’s anaerobic digester in north San Jose, a aircraft hangarsized building that takes all the food scraps from San Jose’s restaurants and grocery stores, removes overlooked recyclables and trash, and composts what remains.

“If you start looking at what’s really in this,” he says, “it’s plastics.”

A dozen laminated Tesla press passes peek out from the damp, hellish mound. There’s a nest of styrofoam clamshells. Soggy plastic bags dominate: sandwich bags, black trash-can liners and a rainbow of slime-streaked takeout sacks. About 40 percent of the material that enters this anaerobic digester can’t be composted.

Gross drives past large chambers filled with varying stages of compost decay to our destination, where finished product is mixed with yard trimmings. Even these piles, which have been screened several times over, are laced with shreds of plastic.

“It’s just plastic bags, plastic bags, plastic bags,” Gross says. “And they’re not going to break down, they’re not going to go anywhere.”

These bags never go away completely, and removing them costs Zanker upwards of $655,000 annually. The city of San Jose pegged the figure even higher, estimating plastic bags cost recycling plants $1 million a year in jammed and broken machinery. San Francisco passed the nation’s first plastic bag ban in 2007, San Jose followed in 2012 and more than 150 California jurisdictions now have a bag ban.

Nevertheless, Bay Area residents continue to use 3.8 billion plastic bags each year, of which more than a million end up in the San Francisco Bay. Ocean currents then carry them to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, an area one-anda-half times the size of Texas choked with floating trash, most of it plastic.

To the relief of Gross, other recyclers and environmentalists, one of two propositions on the November ballot could make plastic bags in California a thing of the past. The other appears to have less noble intentions.

ensure store owners use the money as intended, and an APBA-commissioned report estimates that revenue from bag fees—at $0.10 per paper bag and $1 per reusable bag—could be between $189 and $442 million annually, depending on how much shoppers reuse bags. “[SB 270] was a big special-interest giveaway to the members of the California Grocers Association,” Berrier claims.

Along with the APBA, the No on 67, Yes on 65 campaign is supported by the California Republican Party, Libertarian Party of California, Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association, and a few manufacturing and labor organizations.

Heylen denies that Prop. 67 is about profit, as bags usually cost stores $0.08 to $0.15 each. Only retailers large enough to buy in bulk would see profits off 10-cent bag fees, he adds.

Supporters of Prop. 67 say the APBA put forward Prop. 65 to turn grocers against the bag ban. If both propositions pass, Prop. 65 would divert bag fee revenues into a trust fund for drought mitigation, habitat restoration, recycling, clean drinking water, parks, beach cleanup and litter removal.

The California Grocers Association has not taken an official position on Prop. 65, but Heylen characterized it as meddling by out-of-state companies.

There’s a lot at stake for the plastics industry: California represents between 10 and 14 percent of the country’s 100 billion-bag plastics market. Hilex Poly Co. LLC, a plastic bag manufacturer, has given 44 percent of the $6.1 million raised by the campaign to defeat the bag ban and support Prop. 65.

If both propositions pass and the bag ban receives more votes, grocers will get to keep bag fee revenues, as outlined in SB 270. But if both pass and Prop. 65 has a wider margin of victory, the ban likely would go into effect with bag fees diverted to the wildlife conservation fund.

California’s Legislative Analyst Office noted that if both props pass but 65 receives more votes, courts could interpret a vaguely worded clause as overruling the state’s bag ban. Berrier denies this would happen, saying it would simply nullify the part of Prop.

67 that allows grocers to keep bag fees.

Even if Prop. 65 doesn’t conceal dark intentions, it still upsets Zanker's sustainability director.

“We already had 150 communities in the state of California that had plastic bag bans,” Gross says. “It’s really the will of the citizens here.”

Proposition 67 calls for a referendum on a statewide bag ban passed in 2014, while Prop. 65 would redirect revenue from reusable bag sales to environmental purposes. Both were put on the ballot by the American Progressive Bag Alliance (APBA), a group whose name conjures images of canvas-tote-wielding environmentalists but in actuality is a plastic manufacturers association that has spent more than $6.1 million— raised from five bag companies, only one of which is in California—to put both propositions on the ballot.

Known as the Plastic Bag Ban Veto Referendum, Prop. 67 calls for a referendum on Senate Bill 270, a law that created a statewide ban on the kind of single-use plastic bags once prevalent in pharmacies, grocery stores and corner markets. The bill also set a minimum 10-cent fee for recycled paper or reusable plastic bags, and allocates $2 million for jobs making and recycling reusable plastic bags. The bag ban would become state law with a majority of “yes” votes in November, while a majority “no” vote would leave California cities and counties to regulate the matter.

“The end goal of [Prop. 67] is to move consumers to reusable bags,” says Dave Heylen, vice president of communications for the California Grocers Association.

While paper bags actually have a larger carbon footprint, plastic bags’ harm to the environment, especially waterways, is well documented. For this reason, Heylen explains, the California Grocers Association lobbied to pass SB 270 because they believe it will protect the environment and provide consistency for business owners and customers.

The Yes on 67 campaign has raised more than $3.5 million, and Gov. Jerry Brown and numerous elected officials have endorsed it. As of 2014, nearly 60 percent of voters supported the ban.

Heylen contends that these strong numbers spurred the APBA to put Prop. 65 on the ballot in an attempt to confuse voters and help out-of-state plastics companies “manipulate the system so they can get what they want.”

Jon Berrier, a spokesman for the APBA, disputes this characterization, arguing that Prop. 65 will prevent grocers from padding their wallets with millions in bag fees. SB 270 allows stores to keep proceeds from bag sales, as long as this money covers the cost of bags and customer outreach to comply with the legislation. But SB 270 doesn’t include oversight mechanisms to

There’s also a sense that many of the reforms proposed in the wake of an inmate’s fatal beating last year— allegedly by three jail guards—have yet to translate to reality. But the primary goal, inmates say, is to draw attention to county’s continued use of isolation, despite litigation calling the practice inhumane and unconstitutional.

The Sheriff ’s Office, which oversees the county’s custody division, did not respond to a request for comment.

In November 2015, the nonprofit Prison Law Office sued the county Sheriff ’s Office on behalf of two inmates—Brandon Bracamonte and Brian Chavez—who say they spent seven months without human contact in the Third West Max unit at San Jose’s Main Jail. The plaintiffs said the lack of human contact induced anxiety, depression and thoughts of dying alone in their cells.

Nearly a year later, the county is negotiating a settlement with the advocacy nonprofit to improve conditions at its two jails. While litigation over solitary confinement at Pelican Bay State Prison has pressured California prisons to ease up on the practice, local jails have been slower to enact those reforms.

When San Jose Inside toured the Main Jail this past spring, Sheriff Laurie Smith showed that the cells of This West Max had been emptied out. But inmates who called San Jose Inside this week say the county continues to isolate people in other parts of the jail.

Larry Lucero, 50, said his high-risk classification has kept him in solitary for four-and-a-half years. “They isolate me by removing any form of social oxygen,” he said.

Inmates plan to end the strike at midnight on Oct. 30.

Santa Clara County inmates on Monday joined a nationwide hunger strike to protest solitary confinement and what they see as a gap between policy and practice.

The dissent that kicked off this week at Elmwood Correctional Facility and San Jose’s Main Jail is part of what media reports are calling one of the largest inmate uprisings in American history. An estimated 24,000 inmates in a dozen states have taken part in the collective action, which was timed to begin on the 45th anniversary of the Attica prison uprising.

Inmates at the Main Jail told San Jose Inside that they began refusing meals to highlight what they call a misguided classification system that denies them adequate treatment, education and other resources that could prepare them for eventual

A judge last week dropped three of four charges in a lawsuit filed by Donald Trump supporters against the city of San Jose. The lawsuit accuses San Jose police of failing to protect people who were chased and assaulted by protesters on their way out of a June campaign rally in downtown.

Mayor Sam Liccardo and police Chief Eddie Garcia have denied the allegations. The lawsuit also suggests that the mayor’s party affiliation— he’s a registered Democrat and Hillary Clinton supporter—affected the city’s response.

The city asked the judge to dismiss the case, which was filed on behalf of 14 plaintiffs by attorney and Republican National Committee official Harmeet Dhillon. U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh let the claim of negligence stand and set a date for a jury trial in 2018. She also gave Dhillon another month to amend her complaint.

For more than a year, Trump’s campaign for the presidency has been dogged by violent outbreaks.

HE BLUES IS a beguiling art form.

Tangled up in this country’s legacy of slavery and oppression it is first and foremost a folk tradition. It requires no formal training to play and can be sung without instrumental accompaniment. And yet, its simplicity often obscures its power and scope.

Though it is most certainly a uniquely American art form, it is also a universal language. It lies at the root of rock & roll and African highlife music. It informed the psychedelic guitar work of Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi, as well as the off-top lyrical freestyling of hip-hop.

And though he didn’t realize it until much later in his life, the music that first grew out of the muggy American South has always been with Aki Kumar—even when he was a child, listening to Bollywood tunes in his native India.

Kumar has come a long way since those days—geographically and otherwise. He now lives in San Jose with his wife, Rachel. The couple own a home together in Cambrian Park and spend their days like many couples do, with one exception: while she goes off to work at her job in the tech sector, Kumar stays home, or else heads off to meet up with his band. At night, after Rachel comes home from work, Kumar goes club-hopping.

He’s no deadbeat. It’s not the drink or women he’s interested in. His vice is the blues.

Kumar regularly hosts jam sessions at a variety of bars around Silicon Valley; he also plays harmonica and

sings at the helm of his very own band. They’ve recently garnered accolades from local and national media outlets on the heels of the 2016 release Aki Goes to Bollywood— an innovative melding of blues and contemporary Indian pop.

Kumar was profiled by the San Francisco Chronicle in late September, in advance of his appearance at the annual Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival in Golden Gate Park, and he even grabbed the attention of “The World,” a syndicated Public Radio International program that airs on local NPR affiliate KQED. And for good reason.

Whether viewed through the prism of blues, world music or straightforward pop songwriting, Aki Goes to Bollywood is excellent. It is at once familiar and novel, traditional and experimental, lightheartedly fun and deeply soulful. And by some accounts it never should have worked out so well.

Sitting on a weather-beaten couch next to a old upright piano, we look out upon a long, straight drag of Union Avenue, not far from Good Samaritan Hospital and Leigh High School. Kumar is running late, delayed at a nearby restaurant where he and the rest of his band often enjoy spicy, tangy, slow-cooked meats. It’s not barbeque, as one might expect. These bluesmen enjoy the Indian cuisine prepared at the nearby Rangoli restaurant.

Striding up to the porch, Kumar is dressed in all black, his eyes hidden behind wayfarer sunglasses, his hair slicked to the side. A simple gold chain hangs around his neck, encircling the collar of his

shirt—a bit of flash in an otherwise understated outfit.

He greets us—the sound engineer and me—and we enter the house.

Crossing the threshold into what once served as a living room, we are surrounded by guitars, amplifiers and keyboards. In one corner there is a drum kit; next to that, another upright piano. In the kitchen, in the space where a dinner table ought to be, there is a grand piano. An already narrow hallway has been further constricted by stacks of vintage amps and speaker cabinets.

Squeezing past these dusty rock & roll relics, we come to the garage, which is dominated not by a car or boxes of junk but a large soundboard. On the living room side, a hole has been punched

through the wall and a Plexiglass window installed.

“This place is the epicenter for all blues coming out of Northern California,” Kumar says, eyeing the myriad album covers tacked to the walls. It’s called Greaseland Studios.

It was here that Kumar recorded Aki Goes to Bollywood with the help of Greaseland proprietor Christoffer “Kid” Andersen, a respected blues guitarist and producer, and Jim Pugh, the founder of Little Village Foundation, a nonprofit that works with undiscovered blues musicians to bring their work to a wider audience. Little Village produced Aki Goes to Bollywood.

The contemporary American songbook brims with odes to both coming and going. R&B divas have long belted out ballads excoriating

two-timing lovers, and one wellknown San Francisco band helps close out bars all over the country with a little ditty about catching a midnight train bound for anywhere.

It makes sense, considering that all pop music has its roots in the blues. Way before Biggie Smalls, L.L. Cool J, or even Led Zeppelin penned odes to heading to California, blues players were well acquainted with their suitcases. Still, as common as this pop music trope is to American ears, in the hands of Kumar and his band, it is transformed into something entirely new and exotic.

scale. “I’m going back to India, where pretty women are,” he moans, pausing mid-verse to puff on his harmonica. The instrument’s reedy buzz is, as always, reminiscent of a steam engine’s lonesome whistle— only now, instead of picturing a chugging locomotive cutting through the American South, the listener is transported to the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway in West Bengal.

“It’s an interesting amalgamation of the two ideas,” says Pugh, keyboardist in Kumar’s band. “But it’s not a forced amalgamation.”

Originally from Chicago, Pugh moved to Oakland in his youth and now runs Little Village out of Solvang, Calif. He originally was turned on to Kumar after hearing his more traditional Chicago blues style tunes, which prior to Bollywood

had already begun earning the him a reputation as a rising star in the blues world.

After the initial success of Kumar’s debut album, Don’t Hold Back, Pugh asked him if he had an idea of where he would go with this next record.

Kumar shared his idea for combining Bollywood tunes with the blues.

Pugh thought it was perfect.

After all, Bollywood music— first popularized in Bollywood films before becoming a standalone musical genre—was heavily influenced by Western music, including rock & roll, and reaching back further, blues and jazz.

“Bollywood is already a fusion music,” Kumar says. “It fuses Indian traditional music with Western trends.”

BACK PAIN?

IMMORTAL TECHNIQUE Aki Kumar demonstrates how he uses his harmonica’s mic to beef up the sound of the instrument.

These days that means much of Bollywood music is a combination of Indian modes and electronic dance music. But that’s never been Kumar’s style.

A Life of Music As a child, Kumar grew up idolizing many of his country’s musical stars, like Mohammad Rafi, Kishore Kumar, R.D. Burman and S.D. Burman. “My mom would always sing the Bollywood songs at home,” he says. “Those songs are just part of my musical DNA if you want to call it that.”

It wasn’t until after he moved from India to San Jose that he discovered the blues.

Kumar studied computer science at San Jose State University and landed a

job at Adobe shortly after graduating in the early 2000s. Though he had a passion for his work, he soon found himself drawn to many of the local blues bars and clubs in Silicon Valley—like JJ’s Blues in San Jose and The Mojo Lounge in Fremont.

It wasn’t long before he recalled the cheap harmonica he had as a child, connecting the memory of making simple chords with the mastery demonstrated by the harmonica players he was seeing on stage. Kumar had found his way into the blues.

“It’s so simple, but it can really hit you hard,” Kumar says of the harmonica. “It’s so emotional.”

While still at Adobe, Kumar sought out David Barrett, a highly respected

blues harmonica player who gives lessons at The School of the Blues in San Jose. By day Kumar worked in a cubicle, by night he was attending blues jams and sharpening the skills Barrett taught him.

Eventually things got serious, and Kumar joined up with Tip of the Top. The quartet started gigging across the Bay Area and by 2013, Kumar was ready to make the leap.

When it became apparent that his department at Adobe would be phased out, he saw the writing on the wall as an opportunity rather than an obstacle. He consulted with his wife, Rachel, his college sweetheart, and when his gig at Adobe ended, he walked away from corporate life for good.

While Kumar says he has had his doubts—about whether he was any good, whether he was having a midlife crisis, whether pursuing the blues would end up ruining his marriage— he now is unequivocal. “I definitely miss the paycheck,” he says. But the rest? He waves his hand, as if brushing the dust off the top of his harmonica case. It was the right call.

Rachel has also come around, Kumar says. “She’s watched this whole transition take place,” he says, from the open-mic nights and joining a band to his decision to leave high tech. “I think she is definitely more on board now. She sees that everything I’m doing is quite genuine—it’s not just some pipe dream.”

Kumar is grateful for Rachel’s belief in him. “Without her support I’d be forced to move into a much smaller place and live like a hobo,” he jokes, adding that leaving Adobe wasn’t as hard as one might presume. After all, he had been moving toward a career in blues for seven years before he took the plunge. “In many ways, the career change was inevitable.”

His biggest doubts were still to come.

Future Sound Kumar now helps pay the bills with money he earns as a working musician and recording artist.

He hosts regular blues jams at a number of Bay Area clubs and has a sponsorship deal with Seydel harmonicas.

In addition to the favorable press, Kumar has received ringing endorsements from some of the region’s

top blues players, including Rick Estrin, Mark Hummel and his harmonica teacher, Barrett. Even Dan Aykroyd— a.k.a. Elwood Blues—has signed off on Kumar’s work. The actor, comedian and blues enthusiast raved about Kumar’s playing, calling it “really hot stuff” on his weekly syndicated radio show and podcast, “Elwood’s BluesMobile.”

Kumar recently played one of his biggest shows ever at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival in Golden Gate Park. “It was amazing,” he says.

However, it was never guaranteed that his music would be so well received. In fact, Kumar, Andersen and Pugh have all been pleasantly surprised with the reaction of fans.

“I was worried that it wouldn’t work musically,” Kumar says, “that the fusion would fall flat on its face and the musical product would be dilute—neither Bollywood nor blues. I was also worried that I’d upset purists and fans on both sides.”

That’s not what happened.

Andersen recalls one of the first times he and Pugh performed the Bollywood material with Kumar: “The place blew up,” Andersen says, noting that old-school, died-in-thewool blues fans seem to be eating up Kumar’s latest effort—even though he is singing in Hindi and putting a decidedly non-traditional twist on a genre full of staunch traditionalists.

Speculating as to why his new record has been attracting so much positive attention, Kumar suspects that the album’s novelty likely has something to do with it. “I don’t think there’s been a project like this before,” he says. “It definitely grabs attention.”

But Andersen believes there is another reason Kumar has found success—and it has nothing to do with any shtick; it’s Kumar’s authenticity that makes his music so potent.

“He sings and plays that shit like he’s from there,” Anderson says, referring to Kumar’s ability to channel the power, emotion and genuine feel of Chicago blues and delta blues. It doesn’t matter what language Kumar is singing in, he adds, or whether he is being supported by a steel guitar or sitar.

“I love this,” Andersen says, remembering the feeling he had the first time he played the material from Aki Goes to Bollywood. “I don’t know what it is. I don’t know who is going to dig it. But I love it.”

What was supposed to be a joyous celebration of a 10-year wedding anniversary quickly devolves into an uproarious farce in Neil Simon’s successful Broadway production.

There’s a failed suicide attempt, a wife gone missing, a car wreck, neck cramps and back spasms as four couples work to keep up appearances, keep the police away and get to the bottom of what actually is going on over the course of one ridiculous evening.

Directed by Robert Casillas and produced by George Doltz, the Santa Clara Players are kick of their staging of Rumors this Friday with a champagne reception. The play runs through Nov. 12. (JT)

The Palo Alto Philharmonic orchestra looks to the East for the second performance of its 2016-17 season. Music Director Thomas Shoebotham and Assistant Conductor Lee Actor present three works by a trio of “Russian Masters”—Stravinski’s “Fireworks,” Tchaikovsky’s “Francesca da Rimini” and Prokofiev’s “Symphony #5.” Besides making for a night of iconic music, the program serves to remind us that while relations between Russia and the U.S. are particularly chilly of late, both countries have a love of great works and a proud tradition of striving for greatness in the arts. Serious ‘Attitude’ OH THE IRONY Kyle Pellet has found commercial success with his art, which casts a suspicious eye toward consumerist culture.

SJ artist Kyle Pellet wants to change the art-viewing experience

HEN ASKED ABOUT his upcoming show, “New Attitudes,” San Jose artist Kyle Pellet is cagey.

“I want it to be a surprise,” he says of his forthcoming exhibition at Empire Seven Studios. But when pushed for a little more detail, he gives a hint: “It’s going to be a dream-like experience.”

Dream-like states have long been a theme in Pellet’s work. Strange, half-formed and brightly colored characters traverse anonymous

mallscapes, parking lots and waiting rooms—roaming like zombies in a suburban, consumerist fugue—always moving but rarely interacting. Many of his paintings recall the work of Keith Haring, if Haring had been from San Jose instead of New York, and had whiled away his days at Oakridge Mall instead of the subway.

“I think that’s just my past, how I navigate the past maybe,” Pellet says contemplating the preponderance of malls in his work. “Somehow I just latched onto that language, or those feelings. Most of what I want to communicate can be communicated through these strange spaces and textures. Suburban San Jose in like 1992 or whatever.”

For a 2013 exhibit at Empire Seven, Pellet created over 60 individual

paintings, all made according to the same eight-step process. This use of repetition gave the entire show a sense of totality, with images and themes recurring like reflections—or refractions—of one another. The series was aimed to explore “memory, energy, and the construction and destruction of relationships.”

There is the sense that Pellet has something entirely different in mind with “New Attitudes.”

“I guess I’ve been bored with art shows,” he says. “Some art shows move me, or some art pieces move me, but I’m tired of the same format.

I feel like we should be exploring different avenues or different models of how to display art. Especially since on Instagram or whatever we could just look at really cool stuff all day.”

So what does that mean for this forthcoming exhibit? Well, curation and collaboration will be central to “New Attitudes.” Pellet has selected a number of other San Jose artists whose work will contribute elements to the

show’s whole. According to Pellet, there was one phrase that he kept returning to while he conceptualized the project: “Ambient Theater Production.”

“This is me pretending that I’m in a band,” Pellet explains. “I told a few people that I wanted to make something like Dr. Dre’s The Chronic, like an art exploration that is analogous to that.”

Though he doesn’t play music himself, musicians have long used Pellet’s art for merchandise and album designs, including ex-San Jose rapper Antwon, locals The Albert Square and Epitaph records’ Joyce Manor, who just used their second Pellet design for the recent 2/15/09 Demo 7”. The latter was released as a supplement to the band’s new record, which was recently selected as SPIN’s “Album of the Week.”

His currency among musicians makes Pellet one of a select few San Jose artists to be reaching an audience outside of Silicon Valley, getting into the hands of a wide swath of young people who are interested in current cultural movements. It also means Pellet is currently San Jose’s version of an artist who inspired him at a young age: Raymond Pettibon.

“That art is still so strange,” Pellet says of Pettibon, who is known largely for designing album covers for Black Flag and Sonic Youth, including the former’s iconic logo. “I can’t imagine what he was thinking when he decided to do this stuff. It makes no goddamned sense. It’s wonderful.”

Along with Pettibon, Pellet lists a number of other punk musicians and artists as influences. Pushead (a.k.a.

Bryan Schroeder), The Damned, The Misfits and The X-Ray Spex are all namechecked, along with hip-hop gamechangers Dr. Dre and Kanye West.

If that makes for a strange looking list, it is appropriately reflective of Pellet’s strange, rebellious images.

“Ever since I was a kid I’ve always been resentful and distrustful of dumb rules,” he says.

“New Attitudes” might mark a directional shift in Pellet’s work, but you can still leave your dumb rules at the door.

John Garcia died over the weekend.

A Life of Blues The longtime blues musician and South Bay native John Garcia has died.

The Grammy-nominated guitarist—who performed with the likes of John Lee Hooker, B.B. King, Paul Simon and Bonnie Raitt passed away over the weekend in Gilroy, where he was born.

Garcia’s loyal following knew him as much for his guitar finesse as his humble humor. He approached the blues with an innovative touch, crafting surprising riffs that often coaxed a smile out of listeners, who may have wondered why no one John Garcia else had thought up such a lick before.

Celebration of Life He’s been on Metro’s map for quite some time. Music writer Sammy Cohen dubbed him “Gilroy John” Garcia in a 1985 piece that credited him as a key figure in keeping the South Bay’s blues tradition alive. In recent years, he recorded with John Lee Hooker’s daughter, Zakiya Hooker and his son, John Lee Hooker Jr.

And Brad Kava of the Gilroy Dispatch once wrote of Garcia: “This guy plays the guitar like a classic Porsche. Beautiful and melodic one minute, then leaning into the curves at 210 miles per hour the next.”

John Garcia received Grammy nominations for his blues guitar work on John Lee Hooker Jr.’s 2004 album, Blues with a Vengeance and his 2008 effort, All Odds Against Me. He taught guitar to many local musicians over the past three decades as a music instructor at Gavilan College, South Valley Music Conservatory and the Morgan Hill Adult Community School. He also served on the faculty at the School of the Blues in San Jose and the Gilroy Music Academy.

Lamenting Garcia’s passing on Facebook, local blues harmonica player Andy Just identified the late Garcia as one of his favorite guitarists. “He could literally play anything and everything,” Just wrote. “I especially admired and enjoyed his take on blues-jazz style of guitar playing. I'm just so fortunate that John was part of my life.”

Garcia is survived by son Aaron Django Garcia, who resides in Lodi. In keeping with his wishes, no funeral services will be held on Garcia’s behalf. However, there will be a “John Garcia Celebration of Life” concert at Poorhouse Bistro on Oct. 30. The event will feature Wally Schnalle on drums and Steve Smith on bass. The pair were longtime bandmates of Garcia’s. —Brad Kava

EFORE HE RALLIED Groot, Gamora, Rocket Racoon and Peter Quill, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn was an independent filmmaker working at the bare-bones level—as per the streety, funny Super. Gunn, attending this year’s San Jose International Short Film Festival, is having an award named after him.

Raised in St. Louis, Gunn had his first breakthrough working with the famed low-budget auteur, New Jersey’s Lloyd Kaufman. Gunn

said he learned about every aspect of filmmaking, from scripting, to choreographing sex scenes, to designing the poster, when working on Tromeo and Juliet (1996) which recently screened at MoMA. “I was pretty young and this was not the most comfortable thing for this Missouri boy to be doing,” Gunn says. “When filming began, my first day on the set of a featurelength film was spent directing the actors. This is a lot different from the theoretical or artistic education you get in film school, and I’m incredibly grateful for it.”

It was Gunn’s 2011 film Super— about a pair of inept would-be vigilantes, played by Rainn Wilson and a very funny and charming Ellen Page—that catapulted him to the A-list.

“I had spent 15 years making movies by then, had had three No. 1 films,” Gunn says. “That was about getting my hands dirty, and pressing forward, no matter what.

We did fifty-two setups a day with one camera on that film (Super). On Guardians, we do about twenty-seven setups with two cameras. It was harrowing. I’m glad I did it, but at the time I wasn’t so sure.”

Gunn observed that the state of indie filmmaking is different from when he started out, and he doesn’t find hope in that.

“Independent filmmaking wasn’t just a hobby 15 years ago,” he says.

“You could make a living doing it.

There were a lot of theatrical and secondary outlets that aren’t available today for independent films. So it’s almost impossible today for an independent movie to make money.

“I don’t know where the filmmakers of future big studio films are going to come from, if people have no way of honing their craft in low budget films. Fortunately, on the

creative side, TV has taken up a lot of the innovations that film used to.”

One telling line in Guardians is uttered right before the invasion starts and the shooting begins: “Think of them as paper people.”

Is that the essence of space fantasy, then, making the Stormtrooper types strictly cannon fodder so that the violence never stings?

Gunn observed, “I think the essence of space fantasy is plugging directly into our imaginations in a way no other genre can. The ‘paper people’ line has more to do with Drax’s warped sense of reality.

People get upset about the gore and the violence in R-rated films. When violence is what death is—horrible and ugly—it’s a bit more honest than the countless impact-withoutblood deaths in PG-13 films. It’s something I’m trying to treat a bit differently in the future, especially in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.”

Of the shorts previewed for the SJISFF, two stood out. Jake Honig’s Black Swell is quickly punchlined, yet it has texture. The suicidal Fennimore (Richard Kind, of TV’s Gotham) is getting ready to eat his snub-nosed revolver. Before he can settle down to die, he has to confront a neighbor whose music is on too loud. Honig keeps a tight hand on this, and Kind’s Fennimore is convincingly desperate.

In the Lausanne, Switzerland-set Jewish Blind Date, director and writer Anaelle Morf satirizes masquerade and self-delusion. As a method to punish her mother for getting divorced, Miriam, neé Mary Lou (Estelle Parnault) has gone ultraconservative: she’s attending a Jewish meet and greet to get a husband.

Christian (Axel Fernandez), the buddy of guy who is supposed to be wife-shopping, takes his Jewish friend’s place, and brazens his way through the shared meal. He finds this blushing, cutely gawky lady is actually his idea of a mate. This short romance feeds on the essence of screwball: a story of lovers possessed with rigid ideas, learning to discard them as the unnecessary burden they are.

GIRL POWER ‘Feminism Inshallah: A History of Arab Feminism’ is one of many films with a feminist bent at the UNAFF.

News of the World THE MANDARINS OF China grew their fingernails long to show that they didn’t have to do any physical labor, which may have started the tradition that descends down the road to the nail parlors nearest you. Dianne Griffin’s Painted Nails, one of the many invaluable documentaries during the annual United Nations Association Film Festival, profiles two nail store owners in San Francisco’s Mission District.

Meet Vietnamese émigré Van Hoang: “Feel free to interview me. I will open right up and tell you all I know,” Van says. It’s a living, working seven days a week, but it’s not the sort of profession Van wants to pass on to her young daughter. Exposure to toxic chemicals comes with the job— formaldehyde and toluene among them, banned in the EU—and the miscarriages and other health risks they carry led San Francisco to try to stamp them out. Hoang herself goes to Washington to testify about the chemicals and the damage they do.

Travelling from location to location in the South Bay, this 10-day fest is proudly feminist. Sara Nesson’s Poster Girl tells of Robynn Murray, a volunteer who joined the Army and ended up on the cover of the Army Times. Eventual PTSD from her service prompts her to return to Iraq in the hopes of seeking closure. Apache 8 is the story of the

Apache fire women who fight the blazes in the Arizona hills. Janine di Giovanni is a war correspondent—profiled in Robert Rippberger’s UNAFF 2016: 7 Days in Syria; she Compass for practices a dangerous a Better World profession that killed a colleague of hers.

Oct 20-30 Feminism Inshallah: A Various Locations, History of Arab Feminism Silicon Valley is Feriel Ben Mahmoud’s look at the traditions that fundamentalists are trying to suppress.

Nefertiti’s Daughter by Racha Najdi and Mark Nickolas traces Cairo political graffiti back to the gang of women artists perpetrating it.

The festival has the most serious theme imaginable—the state of a suffering world—and yet there’s hope and a light touch to some of the subjects. Jen Senko’s The Brainwashing of My Dad tells of how Fox News changed one formerly loyal Democrat to another quivering fulminator, rattled by special bulletins and tantalized by skinny blonde newsreaders.

Senko rewinds the clock to show how FOX News was unleashed—the undying revenge of Nixon himself. And a revival of Michael Moore’s Where to Invade Next wraps up this year’s fest.

Tate (The Help) Taylor’s adaptation of Paula Hawkins’ best-seller transplants the action from England to the Hudson River outskirts of New York. As per Hawkins’ Gone Girl, the plot arrives with twists, withheld info, different narrators and flashbacks.

At times, parsing it is like trying to comb out boiled pasta. Rachel (Emily Blunt) is the kind of alkie who pours a fifth of raw vodka in her water bottle so she can drink during her rail commute to NYC. She’s captivated by one particular house on the route, which seems to her a vision of the perfect life: a luxe twostory place with a view of the river, and a handsome couple cavorting on the deck as if they were on the cover of the J. Crew catalog. Imagine her shock when she sees the lady of the house, Megan (Haley Bennett) in the arms of another man. Turns out that Rachel is already connected with Megan, unbeknownst to her: this amoral young blonde Megan is nannying at Rachel’s former house, working for Rachel’s ex-husband Tom (Justin Theroux) and his new wife Anna (Rebecca Ferguson). When Megan the nanny turns up murdered, it’s possible that Rachel could have done the deed during an alcoholic fugue. There are some actresses who have the spark of self-destruction in them. The perfectly chiseled and sensible Blunt isn’t one of them, even though she’s filmed in tight closeups without makeup. (It might have been on-the-nose casting, but it seems as if Rachel could have been Amy Schumer’s first dramatic part.) Director Taylor works in what you could call a muted luridness; the talented cinematographer Charlotte Bruus Christensen has a pallet of granite greys and aquas, so that nothing looks warm enough to be too pretty, even Central Park. At its smartest, the movie cracks down on the much-flaunted idea that simply moving to the suburbs and having a baby will calm a woman down. As in all the better melodramas, there’s a sense here of believable emotional truth and fears underneath the incredible plot. (Valleywide). (RvB)

Max Ophuls’ historical drama focuses on another player in the hunting lodge tragedy: Franz Ferdinand (John Lodge, the burly Russian noble from von Stroheim’s The Scarlet Empress) is suddenly propelled to heir apparent, separated from the woman he loves (Edwige Feuillere) and sent on the long road to a dusty town in the Balkans. THE THIRD MAN/ ACT OF VIOLENCE

(1949/1948) In Vienna after the war, bombed by the Allies and patrolled by the police of four nations, a hapless American paperback writer (Joseph Cotten) is invited to join an old pal from school for some unspecified business. When he arrives, the friend turns out to be dead and buried, but that doesn’t keep the dead man’s acquaintances from seeking him out.

One of the crown jewels of film noir, this tale of betrayal and corruption— shot on location—is one surprise after another. Carol Reed’s brilliant thriller never goes where you think it will: the hero is bad with his fists; the lady he tries to help (Alida Valli) is worse for the American friend’s acquaintance, and we haven’t seen the last of Harry Lime (Orson Welles), the vision of fascinating fascism and well-spoken greed. BILLED WITH Act of Violence. A veteran and former POW (Van Heflin) is settling down to marriage (with the young Janet Leigh); he’s ready to gobble up the sweets of post-war life in a small southern California town. But he has unfinished business with an old comrade at arms: the angriest man in film noir, Robert Ryan limping inexorably toward him to refresh Heflin's selective memory. Also along as a bad girl: Mary Astor is the hardluck prostitute who keeps talking about “kicks.” In one of her memoirs, Astor happily describes getting a thrift shop outfit that she distressed with cigarette burns and spilled booze to wear for the part. “You look like a two-dollar whore!” exclaimed an MGM exec passing by, and Astor knew she had the look just right. J

OOWAN KIM WANTS to pioneer a new kind of American art music.

He derides concert hall compositions as either reheated European classics or cultural appropriation pieces, like “Tibetan yak herding songs,” which he compares to wildflowers ripped from their native field and put into an expensive vase.

After emigrating from South Korea at the age of 20 to attend the

Berklee School of Music, Kim began combining orchestral techniques with hip-hop, a genre he hadn’t heard up until that point.

“I’m almost like a future-generation American, because they will recognize hip-hop as much as jazz,” he says, predicting that one day most will view early hip-hop artists as “great forefathers of American culture. And they’re going to create this kind of shit that I’m doing right now. So I’m creating a prototype of new American culture.”

Kim’s vision of hip-hop’s future isn’t limited to music. True to the multi-pronged roots of the cultural movement, he’ll be showcasing graffiti artists and breakdancers at his Future of Hip-Hop Summit at Art Boutiki. The

event foreshadows his desire to host events in concert halls where patrons walk among the three simultaneously performed arts—an exhibition akin to the underground parties in the early years of hip-hop. Kim plans nothing short of cultural revolution.

“I’m going to fucking destroy all the symphonies” he says. “I’m going to destroy all the operas with this new idea. So this is basically the Uber of the symphony orchestra.”

Among his commissions, Kim has composed reimaginings of “C.R.E.A.M.” and “California Soul” with his Ensemble Mik Nawooj (EMN) which includes a cellist, wind instrumentalists and a soprano opera singer, along with two emcees capable of rapping at whatever tempo tickles Kim’s fancy.

The songs aren’t so much covers as they are deconstructions, where Kim twists the original sound and message of well-known source material into something new. For example, on the

Wu-Tang classic that champions an allconsuming chase of paper, rhymesayers Do D.A.T. and Sandman spit bars decrying the callousness of capitalism.

He melds “compatible” features of the rarely combined genres into a fusion that isn’t classical or hip-hop, but instead the first steps toward a style he thinks will be the next wave of music to come out of conservatories. He believes that we are now in a moment similar to the early days of jazz—when the genre leapt from “jungle music” to being recognized as America’s most significant gift to the world.

“Jazz has Ph.D. programs now,” he says, anticipating that the same will soon be common for hip-hop. “We’re just giving a slight nudge. I saw it in advance. Not even 20 years in advance, I’m seeing it like five years in advance.”

Among the other panelists, there’s Ernest Doty, a former street graffiti artist who began getting commissions for murals after he was busted for vandalism and his name landed in New Mexico papers. Also, Oaklandbased dance groups TURF Inc. and the all-female Mix’d Ingrdnts will showcase their breakdancing nouveau styles.

All the artists are united by the usage of sampling. Doty blends psychedelia with cultural critique, such as his depiction of a teeth-baring great white shark wearing a business suit. And Jenay Anolin from Mix’d Ingrdnts started as a ballet dancer who became attracted to the “larger canvas” allowed by hip-hop.

“There is this hip-hop aesthetic,” Kim says. “You take something out of context and you put it into your own context and it becomes new art. It used to be not as respected, but now it’s undeniable how powerful that is.

It’s so powerful. So that’s hip-hop. For me, it’s a way of thinking.”

Kim started on this idea as a way to stand out from his contemporaries and make works that felt true to his identity and his adopted country. But after reflecting on the “poisonous division” that has characterized America during this election, he sees his fusion of African American and European music as a way toward a more enlightened future.

AIN’T NO GRAVE Supersuckers frontman Eddie Spaghetti is recovering from throat cancer and out on the road.

Country Punks Die Hard WITH A WELL deserved reputation as one of the hardest working bands in rock & roll, the Supersuckers have been on the road for nearly three decades now, blazing a path across stages around the world.

That all came to an abrupt halt in June of last year, when singer and bassist Eddie Spaghetti was diagnosed with stage 3 throat cancer. The unwelcome news forced the band to cancel a European tour. Meanwhile, Spaghetti was faced with an uncertain future, both personally and professionally.

“It was just all these unknowns before I knew exactly where the cancer started and what kind of cancer it was,” he says. “That was the scariest time of course, because you don’t know and your mind races—‘Is it in my brain, is it in my ass, where’s this cancer starting?’”

When the news was ultimately shared with the public, there was an outpouring of support from fans and friends, with a “Fly The Middle Finger at Cancer” campaign that raised funds for the eventual surgery and radiation treatments that he would undergo. The amount of emotional encouragement and financial aid was a bit humbling for the singer, who was used to providing for himself and his family on his own.

“The silver lining to all this was the support I got from strangers and people I know alike,” he says. “It fortifies your faith in humanity a little bit, which is something everybody could use.”

Though the healing process was an arduous one, Spaghetti—who is now cancer-free—likes to highlight the positive aspects that the forced break brought into his life, both on and off the stage. “I got to spend more time with my family and that’s something that I really appreciate now,” said Spaghetti.

He also thinks that his voice may have improved as a result of the ordeal. “I had never taken that much time off from singing or talking,” he says. “I feel like my range is a little bit better, and I’m able to belt it out just like I used to.”

The Supersuckers are currently flaunting their renewed spirit and showcasing songs from their latest album, Holdin’ The Bag, a countrytinged collection that was recorded just before the cancer diagnosis.

Spaghetti says he is glad to be back on the road and appreciates all the support from his fans. “It’s super cool to see people coming out to the shows, we’ve been doing this a long time and it’s nice to see that people still care.”—Sean McCourt

F CALIFORNIA VOTES to legalize small amounts of cannabis for the 21-and-over crowd via Proposition 64, it would dramatically alter the regulatory landscape. The initiative would allow adults to possess up to an ounce of cannabis, up to four grams of concentrates and grow up to six plants at home.

Existing rules about zoning, taxes and licensing would stay in place, and in San Jose that means the 16 already licensed collectives will remain the only legal operators. In the meantime, San Jose has continued to tweak to its own rules.

This week the City Council agreed to sanction weed delivery for licensed collectives. It also approved a proposal to allow more than one cultivation site that collectives can share. Instead of grows being limited to Santa Clara County or neighboring jurisdictions, the city will now allow them to be located anywhere in the state.

When San Jose enacted its pot laws in 2014, the state was still more than a year away from passing its own licensing requirements for medical dispensaries. Once Gov. Jerry Brown approved California’s licensing scheme in October 2015, the city began to look at how it could streamline local rules with the statewide program.

“Our program has continued to evolve as things evolved at the state level,” says Michelle McGurk, assistant to the city manager. “We very much needed a state regulatory framework. The reason we’re now comfortable expanding cultivation sites elsewhere in the state is because the state is going to be licensing these now.”

The question of whether to allow deliveries in San Jose came up earlier this year when Eaze, a company calling itself the “Uber of pot,” announced that a citywide poll showed overwhelming support for doorto-door service. Currently, more than 30 weed delivery services advertise in San Jose—all of them illegal. Most collectives resisted Eaze, as the company was seen as threat to skim profits.

Under the proposal approved at Tuesday’s council meeting, only the 16 permitted collectives would be allowed to deliver marijuana. Deliveries would be limited to the hours of 8am to midnight and drivers must undergo background checks through the San Jose Police Department. Delivery cars will need cameras and GPS systems to ensure the product gets from point A to B. Though Gov. Brown approved the state-licensing framework a year ago, it won’t go into effect until Jan. 1, 2018. To prepare for the rollout and the possible legalization of adult-use this Election Day, the city is building up a dedicated division of marijuana control. —Jennifer Wadsworth

Punk rock fanzine returns to its grimy downtown roots

F PEOPLE IN this city can wax nostalgic about canneries and orchards, I have the right to fondly recall the grand old days of a punk rock magazine called Eat Poop. Now, just so you'll read further, let me explain a few things. I’m probably giving way too much credit by calling it a “magazine,” when in reality Eat Poop was a fanzine.

But it was one that featured artwork, poetry, music reviews and everything that zines tend to do.

Back in the early ’90s, as the original SoFA District era raged with punk, metal, college-radio rock, cheap beer and way too many stoner bands, a thunderous punk scenester named Nathan Nothin’ regularly cranked out issues of Eat Poop from his place near Fifth and St. James. To my knowledge, it was the only San Jose zine ever to successfully solicit a poem from Charles Bukowski.

In 1993, Eat Poop sponsored a huge punk rock marathon at the WORKS gallery, then located at Sixth and Jackson in Japantown. Billed as the Poopoopalooza Festival, the all-day show hosted 14 bands and hundreds of people, way beyond the venue’s capacity. I don’t think any of us were sober. People massed in the streets,

drank in public and a riot definitely seemed to be brewing. Before the show was allowed to conclude, someone called the cops and broke the whole thing up. Luckily, the fiasco did get a mention in the glorious Japantown history tome by Curt Fukuda and Ralph Pearce, without any reference to Eat Poop, of course.

To put everything in context, downtown San Jose was a much different place back then. The Caravan Lounge still had red vinyl booths against the wall opposite the bar. I treat you with these memories because a grand scale Eat Poop reunion will unfold at that very bar this Saturday, featuring two early-’90s bands that were inseparable from the Eat Poop nexus: Bombs for Whitey and the Byproducts.

Bombs for Whitey were a driving ’70s-style punk band in the vein of the Dead Boys. In fact, they even covered the tune “Sonic Reducer.” I can’t even

calculate how many times I saw them at Marsugi’s, then located in the brick building at First and San Salvador.

Even when no bands were playing, I’d slither in during an off night, maybe a Tuesday, and their singer, Paul Nevins, would buy me Guinnesses all night long. We’d be the only ones there and Nevins probably bought me $100 worth of drinks in a short few years.

The Byproducts were more of a joke band. One of them worked in the porn store on South First Street, L’Amour Shoppe, and lived upstairs in the Dinuba Embassy, or just Dinuba for short. A grimy dump that catered to the dregs of downtown’s rock and punk population, Dinuba threw some of the best parties in San Jose music history.

Bands would play on the roof of the place while a few hundred folks hung around the homemade bar, hallways or various rooms and drank themselves silly. The zine was part of the same crowd, making Dinuba seem like the campus extension of Eat Poop.

In other words, decades before wannabe-urban real estate goofs began giving our buildings names like One South or 27 North, the Dinuba Embassy was Eat Poop South.

The Byproducts were so ridiculous that they once wrote a song about one of the employees of the porno store. Aptly, it was called “Porno Guy.” The person targeted in the song can still be spotted around the streets of downtown, on occasion. I’ll be nice and refrain from blowing his cover.

Opening up the reunion this Saturday at the Caravan will be another refugee from that scene, Frank Bella. Twenty-five years ago, Bella was the poet laureate of South First Street, organizing riotous booze-fueled live mic sessions at Marsugi’s under the banner of a “Purgatory Tour.” Poets, musicians and often people who were neither one jumped on stage and participated. Bella occasionally drew the cover artwork for Eat Poop.

Now the entire shootin’ match will unfold yet again for one last gettogether. Fifty-year-olds in mohawks are always welcome.

ORTH VS SOUTH isn’t a question most people ask when they’re in the mood for Indian cuisine. In fact, most diners probably don’t know the difference.

The Cliff Notes version is Northern cuisine is what most Americans would equate to “typical” Indian food featuring naan, yogurt and cream sauces, and it is primarily carnivorous in nature. Southern Indian food is usually vegetarian, uses coconut, dal (lentils) and has rice-based dishes. The latter is what Amaravathi, Sunnyvale’s newest Indian restaurant, brings to the table.

Interior décor is almost nonexistent except for brightly colored walls painted in the colors of the Indian flag, and it’s furnished with sturdy wooden chairs and tables. The menu is a bit hard to navigate for an outsider, as there aren’t many pictures and no real English interpretations to help. Despite my preliminary research, I found myself resorting to Google multiple times to help me determine what to order.

Unfortunately, our server, while friendly, wasn’t much help, as there was a bit of a language barrier. After a few minutes of discussion we settled on our orders and away we went on a culinary journey.

We started out our meal with the doughnut-like Andhra Garelu ($5), a dal fritter that is typically served for breakfast. Fried crisp, they are served with Amaravathi’s signature chutneys: peanut, ginger, coconut and tomato.

Each chutney was more delightful than the last—fresh, clean and bright, they enhance without overwhelming. The next course was the Chilli Paneer ($8), which was comprised of fried chunks of cheese in a chilli-tomato sauce and topped with fresh red onions and cilantro. By far, this was the hit of the meal, as the decadently sweet and spicy sauce married well to the cheese and freshness of the onions and cilantro. I would come here just for this dish alone.

Amaravathi’s specializes in dosas (huge pancake-like crêpes made with fermented rice and black dal) that are undercoated with a filling of choice. I chose the Guntur Chili Dosa ($6.50), which comes brushed with a spicy red chili mix and the aforementioned chutneys. Dosas are meant to be eaten manually, so put away the cutlery and dunk it into any of the amazing chutneys. While the chili mix wasn’t eye-popping hot, it did start to make me sweat after a few bites. Luckily I had the forethought to order their delightful Mango Lassi ($3) to help quell the heat.

Olla Cocina pays respect to traditional Mexican fare with touch of flair

LLA COCINA’s inviting patio on San Pedro Square catches the eye, but it’s the interior decor—a pleasing mix of bright white tiles and vibrant pops of color—that offers a hint of discoveries to come. Vintage Mexican movie posters wallpaper one of the dining rooms, and overall the restaurant possesses an airy, open atmosphere.

The decor and menu effectively signal Olla’s intention to serve traditional Mexican dishes with a twist

on seasonal ingredients. Chef Adnan Ornelas is a native of Michoacán in Mexico, and he honed his craft most recently as sous chef at The Farmer’s Union, the neighboring restaurant operated by the same owners. After tasting several items on his menu, it’s clear Ornelas is ready to run his own kitchen. He delivers a fresh take on what can be overly familiar dishes.

Starters include Guacamole with chips ($8) and Street Corn ($5), but on a sunny afternoon the Roasted Chiles ($7) with sea salt and lemon sounded promising. The server delivered a generous bowl of glistening shishito peppers. Even without a squeeze of lemon wedge across their charred skins, they were very good; with a taste of citrus they were suddenly addictive.

The giant plate of Nachos ($12) was tasty and hearty but not at all light on the waistline. It combined dollops of crema, a melted cheese sauce and crumbled cotija as well.

To accompany the salt and spice of the starters, the Aguas Frescas ($4) sounded just as refreshing as the Sangria Singani ($9) and Margarita de la Olla ($10). The strawberrybanana tasted as sweet as a smoothie but without the added dairy. Our waiter quickly replaced the first glass of nearly clear tamarindo with a muddier version, and an apology— the bartender hadn’t stirred up the mixture. The second glass was an excellent complement to the appetizer and entrees to come.

Of the three main dishes, the Tostada de Pollo ($14) was exceptional. The chicken was braised in a chipotle sauce and then balanced on the plate with a black bean purée, cotija cheese, avocado, pico de gallo, chipotle crema and finely chopped cilantro. The red, white and green

The Baja Fish Tacos ($14) were made from a batch of breaded red snapper. The fry, served on a bed of citrus coleslaw and guacamole, wasn’t at all greasy. All of the taco choices (short rib, pork belly and duck carnitas) come with a salsa roja.

In this case, it didn’t add much to the dish. The tacos would have benefitted from a green tomatillo sauce, but they were still delicious on their own.

For a more unique dish, our server suggested the Pasilla Relleno ($14).

Instead of the usual green, this was a red pepper stuffed with stewed, ground lamb in a tomato sauce. The taste was remarkably similar to a Middle Eastern tagine. The meat was rich and smoky, served with a piquant cilantro rice. It felt like the odd dish out but would make sense on a cold fall night. On this occasion, however, the flavors just weren't meant to sit next to a platter full of nachos.

Olla Cocina puts a refined twist on the cuisine found at any number of taquerias, with flavor combinations that should offer a few surprises.

My husband of a year is very tight with cash. It’s always save, save, save. I recently traded in my car, and I needed $1,000 more for the new one, but he never offered to give it to me. My parents ended up paying it. I make my own money, but not a lot, and I’m wondering what kind of financial arrangement makes sense in a marriage.—Confused Your husband comes into the living room, and there you are—sitting on the floor with a Starbucks cup and a cardboard sign that says, “Anything helps. God bless.”

Like a lot of women, you may assume that whatever subtle emotional cues you can read, men can also read. However, research by social psychologist Judith A. Hall finds that women are far better than men at spotting and decoding nonverbal signals in facial expressions and body language. Women’s having evolved greater aptitude for this makes sense, as newborn infants generally aren’t in the habit of expressing their needs with, “Hey, mom-lady, would you grab me a pack of smokes and a beer?”

So, yes, if you want something from your husband, you do have to put that out there in spoken-word form. But beyond that, you two need to sit down and hammer out a fiscal policy for your relationship—where the lines get drawn on yours/mine/ours and what if one of us has a financial crisis and needs an alternative to, oh, stealing a mule to get to work every day?

In coming up with this policy, it’s important to go beyond the cold dollars-and-cents view and discuss each other’s attitudes surrounding money, especially any issues and fears. Then, when there’s a conflict, each of you can maybe start with a little compassion for the other’s point of view.

It also might help to understand that our views about money are influenced by genetics and what behavioral ecologists call our “life history strategy”—a term that relates to whether our upbringing was stable and “safe” or risky and unpredictable.

Child development researcher Jay Belsky and his colleagues find that a stable childhood environment tends to lead to a more future-oriented approach (saving, for example), whereas, say, growing up ducking gunfire or just having divorced parents and getting moved around a lot tends to lead to a more now-oriented approach (spendorama!).

Whatever your past, going off into the sunset being chased by creditors can be a marriage killer. Family studies researcher Jeffrey Dew finds that married couples with a bunch of “consumer debt” (owing on credit cards, loans for consumer goods, and past-due bills) fight more about everything— from sex to chores to in-laws. And research by sociologist Carolyn Vogler, among others, finds that couples who pool their money (like their money got married, too!) tend to be happier.

I would guess that the spirit in this is important—going all in financially—“us against the world!” instead of, “If you lose your job and can’t pay your share of the rent, don’t worry, baby. I’ll help you pitch your tent on the front lawn.”

Pot is legal where I live, and it helps ease my knee pain from years of running.

I’ve noticed that it also makes me feel more sensual. I want to share the marijuana experience with my boyfriend when we make love, but he says pot (even the “energizing” strains) makes him “inert” and “obsessively analytic.”
