I saw you hiking eastward on the Sunset Trail in Big Basin State Park. I was hiking west.

You were blasting Chinese pop music on a pink Bluetooth speaker. The guy you were with had a huge box of hard boiled eggs, and you were toweling off your sweat with a handful of tissues. Tissues and Bluetooth speakers are outdoor accessories I don't see much when hiking. I said, “Hi,” as I passed, but no one in your group said anything in reply.

As I continued west on the Sunset Trail, every so often I would see a handful of white tissues discarded by the side of the trail. The tissues looked barely used and were not weathered like they had been there for ages. A mile or two further west, I found a big pile of shining white, crumpled tissues, and also a pile of freshly peeled eggshells. I knew it was you. Learn some respect for the environment, shit-for-brains. If you have the strength to carry a box of eggs and a pack of tissues with you on a hike, you can handle eggshells and used tissues.

Water Cool-it Ever since former CEO BEAU GOLDIE slid into retirement in January, the Santa Clara Valley Water District has mostly flowed under the radar. But the legendary ’Spigot—responsible for 1.9 million people’s drinking water—never really runs dry on juicy stories. Last Friday, interim CEO NORMA CAMACHO canned the district’s chief administrative officer, JESUS NAVA. This was no small decision.

Nava oversaw HR, union negotiations, finance, security, aspects of water utility and watersheds, and the public agency’s internship program. That last task became a frequent water cooler topic, as Nava apparently had a reputation as a “skirt chaser,” according to multiple sources at the District. In one peculiar action, he reportedly had a window installed in the cubicle next to his office to better keep an eye on employee comings and goings. Despite rumblings of harassment complaints, none apparently resulted in any discipline.

Complex ballot initiatives require voters to do their homework

HANKS TO the state’s longstanding tradition of direct democracy, every California voter becomes a lawmaker at the ballot box. But this year more than ever, citizen legislators of the electorate better do their homework. Seventeen state initiatives have made their way onto the fall ballot, including some of the most complex laws ever put to a popular vote. Study up now or get lost on Election Day. andProp. 51: School bonds

Originally pitched by the state lawmakers as a way to help local schools, Prop. 51 would authorize $9

billion in bond debt to modernize K-12 and community college campuses.

But the proposal bankrolled by the construction industry has drawn fierce criticism from public school advocates.

Opponents of the measure say it would bolster a status quo—a schoolbond industrial complex that enriches developers on the taxpayer dime.

Prop. 52: Medi-Cal funding Should it pass, Prop. 52—arguably one of the most complicated initiatives on the ballot—would protect the state’s ability to fund Medi-Cal. California has long failed to put up enough money to trigger the max amount of federal matching funds indigent health care. Prop. 52 would require a two-thirds vote of the Legislature to spend hospital fees on anything but they’re intended purpose: health care for people who can’t otherwise afford it.

Prop. 53: Revenue bonds This initiative would require statewide voter approval for government construction funded by more than $2 billion in revenue bonds. Wealthy Central Valley farmer Dean “Dino” Cortopassi penned it as a way to reign in state debt by making it harder for bureaucrats to run up a tab on pet projects. Opponents—including Gov. Jerry Brown, whose proposed bullet train and Delta tunnels comprise two of the biggest public works projects in state history—say it would prevent muchneeded infrastructure from getting built.

Prop. 54: Public review Two influential Republicans—former state Senator Sam Blakeslee and Palo Alto-based GOP donor Charles Munger Jr.—penned Prop. 54 to prevent lawmakers from making last-minute changes to bills headed for the governor’s desk. The initiative would force the Legislature to post bills online for public review at least three days before a final vote. The measure would also expand access to live video of legislative action

Four years after a similar measure was rejected, voters will have yet another chance to raise the tax on tobacco. This time, the tax would amount to $2 a pack and apply to both traditional smokes and their newfangled electronic counterparts.

Jerry Brown’s broader effort to undo some of the tough-oncrime laws he helped usher in decades ago, Prop. 57 would qualify more nonviolent prisoners for early release based on credits for good behavior and taking classes during incarceration. It would also prevent juvenile offenders from getting shunted right away to an adult court hearing.

This would give county education offices far greater freedom to teach bilingual students in English and in their native tongue.

One of the most talked-about measures on the fall ballot, this initiative would legalize marijuana and hemp under state law. Though it would remain illegal by federal standards, marijuana would become taxable by state and local governments and sellable to anyone over the age of 21.

Prop. 65: Carry-out bags

As an advisory measure, this proposition asks voters whether they want state policymakers to work toward repealing the U.S. Supreme Court’s controversial Citizens United decision on money in politics. Overturning the decision would require the radical step of amending the U.S. Constitution. Because there’s such a high bar for revoking Citizens United, state legislators took to the ballot to ask for the blessing of California’s electorate.

The plastic bag lobby is backing this measure, which would require fees charged for paper or reusable bags to fund environmental programs. Under the existing law banning single-use plastic bags, retailers can pocket those fees.

Prop. 58: Bilingual education

Prop. 60: Condoms in porn Adult film performers would have no choice but to use condoms in explicit sex scenes under the proposed initiative.

Prop. 61: Drug Prices Big Pharma dropped tens of millions of dollars into a campaign opposing this measure, which would ban state agencies from paying more than the

SJ May Allow Legal Funds for Candidates

FANCY PANTS Movie tickets and candy bars aren’t taxed as a luxury, but somehow tampons still qualify as extra special.

Fight Continues on Absurd Tampon Tax BY JENNIFER WADSWORTH In California, the tampon tax still lives, but a class-action lawsuit filed out of Santa Clara County will continue to fight it to the end.

Gov. Jerry Brown vetoed a bill last week that would have exempted tampons, pads and other menstrual products from sales tax. “Tax breaks,” he mansplained, “are the same as new spending” and should be decided in budget deliberations.

Rather than waiting on lawmakers, two women have taken the battle to court. In August, Nicolle DiSimone and Stacy Sobo sued the state Board of Equalization (BOE) over the tax, which they claim violates their constitutional right to equal treatment under the law.

“Honestly, Brown’s veto makes for a much more interesting case,” their attorney, Devon Lyon, tells San Jose Inside.

The past year has seen state after state knock the tax off feminine hygiene supplies by reclassifying them as medical essentials. As the

stigma around menstruation begins to fade, the campaign to end the so-called tampon tax has gone viral.

For the first time ever, the leader of the free world had something to say about the apparent inequity.

“I have no idea why states would tax these as luxury items,” President Obama told a lifestyle blogger in a YouTube interview earlier this year. “I suspect it’s because men were making the laws when those taxes were passed.”

California, like most states, applies sales tax to menstrual items because they’re considered “luxury” goods, not necessities like medicine and food. Rogaine and Viagra, on the other hand? Those are tax-free.

So are movie tickets and candy bars, oddly enough.

Feminine hygiene items have been subject to sales tax in California since 1933, according to BOE spokesman Jonathan Mendick. Tampons and their ilk aren’t singled out, he says.

The $20 million collected from

taxing them gets pooled with all other sales tax revenue.

Assembly Bill 1561 would have lifted the tax from tampons, sanitary napkins, menstrual cups and period sponges through 2022.

Assemblywoman Cristina Garcia (D-Bell Gardens), who co-sponsored the bill with a Republican, called the governor’s veto “an easy cop-out.”

But Lyon—who calls the tax “a vestige of an antiquated patriarchal era when women were somehow considered unequal to men”—says she’s eager to argue her case in court. In her lawsuit, she notes that California prisons and jails recognize the necessity of providing female inmates with sanitary items. She points to a 1989 Illinois Supreme Court ruling that deemed period products a clinical need.

The late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia even gets a nod from Lyon, who cites his opinion in a 1993 case that likens a tax on yarmulkes to a tax on Jews.

Litigation over the outcome of San Jose’s District 4 council race has prompted the city to consider allowing candidates and elected officials to raise money for their legal defense.

Approving the rule change would certainly benefit Councilmanelect Lan Diep, who was sued by Councilman Manh Nguyen, the incumbent he beat by a 12-vote margin back in June. But Nguyen hopes the Lan Diep council will revise the language of the proposal to allow accounts not only for legal defense but litigation in general.

“It’s very expensive to pay for legal fees and court costs,” he said.

Two recounts affirmed Diep’s victory, but Nguyen questioned the integrity of the tally. He sued Diep personally, alleging that illegal votes were cast. “I’m not doing this for my interests,” Nguyen said. “Win or lose, it doesn’t matter. But you’ve got to do it right.”

Last week, Diep held an informal press conference outside of City Hall to call attention to San Jose’s rules preventing him from collecting money to defend himself in court.

“That means my options are either to represent myself or incur debt to answer Manh Nguyen’s lawsuit,” he wrote on Facebook after the event. “I feel this is unfair and wrong.”

San Jose banned officeholder accounts in 2007 due to concerns that they could be used as a way to buy political influence. The council will vote next week on whether to revoke that ban. Diep said he hopes the city will also allow him to put leftover campaign contributions toward his legal defense. —Jennifer Wadsworth

This can happen even when the information is of monumental historical significance. The single most titanic deed of the 1960s—the first human landing on the Moon, followed by the safe retrieval of the voyagers—was counterpointed later by forgetfulness, budget cuts and political squawking.

In preparation for the Apollo missions, NASA carried out a littleremembered series of Moon-mapping missions from 1966-67. Over the course of these satellite expeditions, the space agency captured some of the first images of Earth from The Moon— snapping the very first “Earthrise” photo, and recording the pockmarked lunar surface in high resolution.

The images were then considered top secret and locked away, only to be upstaged by footage from the manned lunar landing. The glorious 35mm and 16mm images taken during the course of the Apollo missions weren’t developed until 1989. The footage was woven into the documentary For All Mankind. That’s when we at last saw something of what the astronauts saw,

in crisp color instead of fuzzy black and white, touched with cathode flares.

So what happened to those first images of the lonely, uninhabited moon? The New Museum Los Gatos, a.k.a. NUMU, will tell that story at their new exhibit, “McMoons: How a Band of Scientists Saved Lunar Image History.”

The show, opening Sept. 23, details the restoration work of a group stationed at a former McDonald’s on the NASA Ames campus in Mountain View.

Working out of their “McMoon” facility, the crowdfunded Lunar Orbiter Image Recovery Project aims to retrieve and restore the original images taken 50 years ago. These restored and digitized images— together comprising a mosaic of many smaller snaps pulled from myriad spools of magnetic tape— show a closeup portrait of Earth’s original satellite.

For one, there’s the historic preservation element, Long says, noting an increasingly popular exhibition topic at museums all over the world. Apparently, the tapes containing these images were going to be tossed until an employee stepped up to preserve them for two decades.

And, of course, there’s the space program. “How do you lose interest in the space program?” Long asks. “It’s like losing interest in The Beatles.”

LOIRP is based at NASA Ames at Moffett Field, the Silicon Valley airfield dominated by the lacey steel skeleton of the landmark Hangar One. After a few wrong turns, you can find 596 Edquiba Road. There stands the abandoned McDonald’s, shorn of its golden arches.

Inside is a kludged-together lab where the self-declared “technoarchaeologists” of LOIRP do their work. The building is a typical Mickey D’s, with a slanted roofs, freezer vaults, and dung-brown glazed brick flooring.

The walk-in freezers are full of stacks and stacks of heavy tapes. Various and

sundry equipment sits on metal shelves still labeled for chipotle and tartar sauce.

A pirate flag hangs in the front window. The Jolly Roger is explained

by LOIRP’s Mackenzie “Casey” Harper and Marco Colleluori; Dennis Wingo, their leader, was out on business in Paris, where I’d phoned him a few days previously. Mackenzie says carefully: “The pirate flag is about not the things we weren’t allowed to do, but it’s about things that haven’t been overtly approved.”

When not recovering a definitive portrait of the Moon as it was a half a century ago, Wingo’s Skycorp became the first private company to command an interplanetary spaceship. Marco, who Mackenzie called “our propulsion person,” had figured out a way, with the help of volunteers around the world, to revive and reroute the moribund satellite IC3 so that it could study the tail of a comet.

From August 1966 to August 1967, five satellites prosaically named “Lunar Orbiter 1-5” were launched from

Florida, with the mission of mapping the Moon’s surface from close range.

NASA carried out the quintet of Lunar Orbiter missions to scout for landing spots, and to check on the levels of solar radiation their astronauts would be facing. After about a month’s worth of orbits, the satellites were deliberately crash-landed on the lunar surface so that they wouldn’t present a navigation problem to future human travelers.

The satellites consisted of four hexagonal panels, stop-sign shaped, surrounding a central telescopic muzzle. A radar dish stuck out on an arm protruding straight from the side.

A 35mm camera snapped pictures from a distance of about 30 to 930 miles up, developed the photos on board, and then synthesized them in radio signals. Meanwhile, continuous signals were sent back to one of three tracking stations in Spain, Australia and the Mojave Desert in California. Each listening station was 120 degrees from the others, to make sure that the craft never broke contact with Earth.

The original data was loaded onto vast spinning magnetic tapes, familiar to anyone who’s ever seen a vintage

evil-computer movie.

These images ended up as “framelets”—narrow strips about two feet long and one inch wide. When printed out and assembled back in the labs of 1966 and 1967, each framelet was labeled, with handwritten notes marking the mission it came from, which Earth station the signal was beamed to and what small sector of the Moon it illuminated. The prints were then laid together in strips like a bamboo mat.

Casey describes what LOIRP has been doing for years: “After digitizing the tapes, which was no small feat—it involves what I’d assumed was black magic—we had to process the framelets. We’d give them their own file name, color corrections, exposure correction, and edit out any imperfections, without compromising the images.”

After the original project ended in 1967, the tapes were classified for years.

Then they were declared surplus. There were a thousand or so of these tapes, in reels that weighed about five pounds

each. Archivist Nancy Evans, co-founder of the NASA Planetary Data System, and Caltech’s Mark Nelson began acquiring old FR-900 tape drives in an early attempt to digitize the analog data.

Evans kept the tapes in a barn in Sun Valley, California. In 2007, when Evans decided to clean house, Dennis Wingo and his associate Kevin Cowing brought the tapes and the dusty, busted FR-900 tape drives to NASA Ames.

Wingo is the author of Moonrush, a 2004 book about plans to colonize the Moon, both as a way to feed the Earth’s hunger for mineral resources, and as a pit stop on the way to exploration of the inner solar system.

“When I was a student at University of Alabama at Huntsville, I only had access to microfilm images of the Moon,” Wingo says, speaking via phone from Paris. “I’d heard about the tapes in the 1990s.”

The first question, he notes, was getting the 40-year-old Ampex tape drives to work. “Imagine trying to get an Apple IIc functional,” he says, “and that machine is only 30 years old.” Wingo sought help from Ampex, some 20 miles away in Redwood City. Ampex has no industrial structure on the premises, but retired engineers helped him get the aged machines on line.

“Second,” Wingo continues, “NASA wanted to know if we could get workable images from these tapes.

I knew from my research that the dynamic range of these tapes was four times what the film record was. [The Jet Propulsion Laboratory at Caltech] wrote to NASA, saying there’s no way we could do this project for less than $6 million. But we did it.”

Casey Harper was a child when she first saw the McMoon project in 2008.

Her mother worked nearby at NASA Ames. “There was me, and my two brothers Chris and Travis,” Harper recalls.

“My mom didn’t want us to be sitting at home all summer long. We became free labor here. Travis worked here about five years, and I came back when I was older.”

“I was there at the very beginning; it was over the summer and Dennis needed a building,” Casey says. “The advantage of this McDonald’s was the ventilators over the grill, which could be used to vent the building when they were doing soldering or drying off the machinery. I wasn’t here when they were actually doing the initial processing. I was just

cleaning the machine, spraying down the parts. I like old machines, and for me this was like being a beginning engineer—we had brilliant people here who were willing to teach.”

In an item praising LOIRP in the Congressional Record, Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren (D-San Jose) paid a compliment to the crowdfunded project’s “vision and inspiration.”

If you wanted to send astronauts to Mars, you’d want to have an accurate model of meteor strikes.” The idea is to determine, through study of the Moon, how much you’d need to armor a spacecraft against the strikes. Over the course of their 25 years making music and touring, this Toronto-based rock outfit have released 11 LPs and been nominated for a Juno—the Canadian version of the Grammy—nine times. They are currently on tour celebrating the 20th anniversary of their one Juno-winning record, the Beatlesinfluenced One Chord Over Another. Though less known in the U.S., Sloan were voted one of the top five Canadian bands of all time in a Canadian Broadcasting Corporation poll. On their current tour they have been performing One Chord in its entirety, then playing a second set of hits and deeper cuts. (NV)

It’s hard not to feel good while listening to Brasstracks. The Brooklyn duo mixes EDM with blaring trumpets to produce a funky, futuristic and familiar sound. Imagine how J. Dilla would sound if his sampling palate had been limited to Earth Wind and Fire, Tower of Power and P. Funk and you’re getting close. Trumpet player Ivan Jackson and drummer Connor Rayne have been garnering buzz online with their dancefloorready beats. Released last month, their Good Love EP features the lead single “Say You Won’t,” which starts off like the opening to a daytime TV show before building into a swaggering anthem. (JT)

Winner of four Tony Awards in 2010, this musical tells the story of a white DJ in the ’50s who chooses to play black artists on the local radio station, while an up-andcoming singer hopes to land her first big break. Memphis features music and lyrics by Bon Jovi’s David Bryan with a book and lyrics by acclaimed playwright Joe DiPietro—known for several offbroadway credits, including I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change and The Toxic Avenger. What began as a small art show for friends and family in a Naglee Park backyard has blossomed into a weeklong festival. Anne & Mark’s Art Party kicks off its 2016 celebration of art, music, live performance and all things creative this weekend. Though they hail from the U.K., indie-soul outfit The Heavy have ties to San Jose. The Blank Club hosted one of the band’s very first headlining shows on the West Coast. What's more, the group’s drummer, Chris Ellul is married to Jen Chambers, a Morgan Hill native. Ellul and Chambers met at that 2010 Blank show, and the band now swings through San Jose whenever possible. Back in 2010, they were touring behind their debut, The House That Dirt Built, which featured the hit “How You Like Me Now?” The group released their fourth full-length in April, Hurt & the Merciless. Broadway San Jose’s ‘Phantom’ a magnificent masquerade

UE THE SYNTHS, smoke machines and the magic chandelier. Broadway San Jose opens its 2016-17 season with the newest touring production of The Phantom of the Opera. Scaled for the Center for Performing Arts, it still incorporates all the beloved features of the hugely popular Andrew Lloyd Webber musical.

As this Phantom opens, the stage is covered by a giant smoky scrim, behind which an auction of old theater props is taking place. The auctioneer is selling off various items … when he comes to Lot 666, an old, rusted chandelier. As he explains

its connection to the strange events surrounding the phantom of the opera, the chandelier flickers to life, illuminated by the “new” electricity.

The hulking candelabra quakes and sparks fly, as the stage below rolls back through time to the same theater two decades earlier.

Cut to the performing company as it busily rehearses for an opera based on the life of Hannibal: before the cast can finish rehearsal, a pulley system collapses onto the stage, sending the dancers, singers and crew into chaos. Carlotta, the resident soprano and prima donna, played with charm and moxie by Jacquelynne Fontaine, storms off the stage, while the theater owners rush to calm the storm.

The choreographer, Madam Giry, played with perfect moody insinuation by Anne Kanengeiser, steps in and suggests Christine—the orphan child of a former chorus girl—for the lead part.

Later, Christine confides to her dancer friend that she learned to sing from an invisible spirit, the “Angel of Music.”

Played by Kaitlyn Davis, Christine is coy and sweet, but well-grounded. She’s also soon visited by theater patron and not-so-secret admirer, Raoul, Vicomte de Chagny, played by Storm Linenberger with perfect austere tension. Christine tries to explain her supernatural skills, but the Vicomte just laughs. Then we meet the titular Phantom, who appears first in Christine’s mirror, before revealing himself and his spooky underground lair.

Played by Chris Mann, The Phantom is portrayed with an immaculate mixture of anger, passion, self-hatred and toxic grandiosity. Mann’s vocal performance synchronizes beautifully with the character’s irrational personality.

After entrancing Christine, The Phantom explains that he has chosen her to sing his music and perform in his productions. Soon the company receives letters from The Phantom, who threatens terrible tragedy if Christine is not cast as the lead in its

upcoming production. They try to ignore the notes, but when the lead soprano’s voice becomes toad-like, the theater director knows he has a problem. Christine escapes to the roof with Raoul, where she tells him about her trip to The Phantom’s lair.

This only enrages the Vicomte—and The Phantom, who overhears their conversation—even more.

What follows is a dreamlike love triangle, a cursed theater company, and the self-loathing of a tortured genius, who brings it all tumbling down, in one of the most epic and well-known theater stories of the 20th century.

Broadway San Jose pulls it all off to marvelous and daring effect. Every aspect of the show seems meticulously thought out—from beautiful, ornate costumes detailed down to the button, to the never-ending complex song and dance sequences that play without a hitch. The time and effort devoted to innovating upon an already best-selling production is visible in every scene.

Most impressive is the set, which is practically a character itself. By incorporating a turret-like mechanical system, revolving and unfolding between scenes world. The experience of watching this mechanism enhances the pace and dreamlike nature of the story, presenting starkly different worlds fluidly and continuously.

The lighting in this production is also noteworthy. Although a little dark at the beginning of the first act, the lighting is so precise and nuanced it gives life to the stage and colors the tone of even the briefest scenes.

With this high level of production it’s hard to find flaws or inconsistencies. To fit the plot into a reasonable frame and time, some aspects of the story were elided and some character development was lacking, but these are negligible weaknesses in the face of such a spellbinding performance. The audience comes away with a sense of how a larger-than-life musical can be adapted into a normal-sized theater without losing any of its original excitement or vigor.

Most recently, Robinson has been stretching his acting muscles big time, taking on the indie dramedy, Morris From America, which premiered at Sundance, and going head to head with everybody’s favorite junkie hacker, Elliot Alderson.

“It was dope!” Robinson says of playing Ray, a villain on the second season of the hit USA Show, Mr. Robot. “It was intense. And it whet my appetite to do some more dramatic stuff.”

While Robinson says he will never give up on comedy—proving his dedication to the craft with a string of stand-up shows at The Improv in San Jose this week—he says he has been watching TV differently than he used to.

When it comes to his favorite comedy cartoons, like Family Guy and American Dad, he says he is often thinking of how the gags were born. “What jokes were pitched that didn’t make it?” he wonders. “It’s an interesting way to watch.”

And, when it comes to the dramas in his queue, Robinson says he’s trying to figure out how to transcend the boundary between performance and real life.

LIVER STONE’S overemphatic style can be alienating, particularly when he’s overexplaining things that don’t need explaining, while glossing over the more interesting details. Whether it was fair or not, W. had juice. Snowden is more of a generic hero’s struggle that ends upbeat, with the title whistleblower (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) receiving hugs and applause.

Edward Snowden was an employee of the CIA and the NSA (one good anti-joke here: it stands for “No Such

Agency”). At these organizations, and later as a private contractor serving them, Snowden discovered that the government’s data collection program was far more universal than the Obama administration claimed.

Snowden finally went public with documents explaining how the massive surveillance program worked, with the help of selected journalists Laura Poitras (Melissa Leo), Glenn Greenwald (Zachary Quinto) and the Guardian’s Ewen MacAskill (Tom Wilkinson), to whom Snowden gave a long briefing session in a Hong Kong hotel room.

In flashback, we follow Snowden as a young man. He was a high school dropout who fancied Star Wars, Joseph Campbell and Ayn Rand.

Snowden tried to train for the Special Forces but broke his leg in boot camp.

“There are other ways to serve your

country,” a doctor tells him, and with that Snowden goes to Langley.

Meanwhile, he meets Lindsay (Shailene Woodley) a left-winger who is against the Iraq War. The deep feelings people had for or against that war are reduced to the minor complications in a rom-com; when he kisses this free-spirited girl, Snowden jokes about the taste of liberalness on her lips. Over the course of assignments in posts as far apart as Geneva, Tokyo and Hawaii, Snowden absorbs a punishing workload, which batters his relationship. Snowden may be most interesting when it demonstrates how cyber-workaholism can make even Oahu seem like purgatory.

Lindsay is on the edge of manic pixiedom (on a first date, she makes Snowden pose for wacky photographs); she also teaches a stripper-pole dancing class that gives Snowden a flash of skin. Woodley is glammed up for the role and hardmuscled. She’s forcing herself to fit this part. Lindsay never wants to let Snowden go. You’ve rarely seen so much clinging in a movie.

In a small part as Forester, an inhouse whistleblower who damaged his own CIA career, Nicolas Cage seems to match Stone’s thunderous intentions as a director. It’s a pleasure to watch Cage give meaning to every line. When he makes his murmur of welcome to Snowden, the new man on the CIA campus—“You’ve come to the right little whorehouse”—we see the kind of juice and salt Snowden could have had.

Stone has a talented, highly abstract cinematographer in Anthony Dod Mantle—a collaborator with Danny Boyle and Lars Von Trier.

Mantle brings out the hot scribbles of color in the Hong Kong skyline, the cold glow of blue-white glass booths that the analysts inhabit when they’re gathering data. Thousands of glowing electronic filaments, in an animation of the world wide web, resolve themselves into a shape, becoming the iris of a massive eye.

When Snowden finally comes out into daylight, he becomes a black silhouette on a white-out screen, which dwindles into nothingness.

Gordon-Levitt is juxtaposed against taller actors so that we’ll always feel protective of our driven young hero.

One inspired moment has Snowden ambushed by a cinema-screen sized Skyping—we weren’t aware that there was such a big screen in the room. It’s a call from Snowden’s saturnine boss and mentor Corbin (Rhys Ifans). The mammoth talking head looms, dwarfing Snowden.

Corbin tries to make a deep intrusion into Snowden’s personal life look like a favor that the older man is doing to calm a troubled employee’s mind. The scene is unbelievable, but it has style.

Stone explains Snowden with ease: he turned whistleblower because The Man went after the woman he loved.

The problem, as in Citizenfour, is that Snowden is telling a story that isn’t finished yet. While Snowden likely deserves to be pardoned, there’s a certain fishiness to his story—some part of it we haven’t got yet. And you’d have to be less credulous than Oliver Stone to discern that lack.

GUNSMOKE Chris Pratt exacerbates an already bad remake of ‘The Magnificent Seven.’

‘Magnificent’ Maligned OVERSIZED WITHOUT being bighearted, The Magnificent Seven has an acceptably interesting gun battle finale.

But it removes the element of desperation from the story of the hired defenders of a small Western frontier town. In the latest iteration of this story, they’re reduced to a band of fun-loving, wise-cracking mercenaries, just here to have a good time.

The hamlet of Rose Creek is ravaged by the Sacramento land baron Bogue (Peter Sarsgaard, thwarted, glum and just plain weird). Chisholm (Denzel Washington) a warrant officer—read: bounty hunter—is recruited by a frontier lady Emma (Haley Bennett) to round up a gang of gunmen.

The warriors include Byung-Hun Lee in the James Coburn part as a knifeman, and the First Nation actor Martin Sensmeier as a Comanche with the Dashiell Hammett name “Red Harvest.” (A plus: either Sensmeier or his stunt double really knew how to ride a pony.) Stinking up the movie thoroughly is Chris Pratt as the Texas gunman Josh Faraday. Cut out Pratt’s merry reactions to violence or put-downs, and the movie would have been half an hour long. Ethan Hawke is the dashing slicker “Goodnight Robicheaux” an ex-Civil War sharpshooter with bad nerves, but the standout is Vincent D’Onofrio, who looks like Orson Welles in Chimes at Midnight. He

plays a mad mountain man with a cracked, whinnying voice. This burly madman makes insane biblical utterances—shooting people while chanting Psalm 23—and carries out feats of strength, such as tackling The Magnificent a horse, in the spirit of Seven Mongo’s famous horsepunch in Blazing Saddles.

This seems like a simple Valleywide movie to make—create a thirst for justice and then slake it. But none of the villain Bogue’s crimes against The Wild West are as severe as the photography. Color correction dyes the fields an irritating limegreen, or else a deep spurious gold around the sandstone promontories of Arizona.

The talkative script keeps reiterating what we’re seeing: “Dang it, I’m good!” Pratt says, feeling good about himself once again. “I sense we are bonding,” we hear, as the seven men bond, masticating cheroots and cigars they don’t seem to want to smoke.

Washington has a good hat and a better squint, but he’s a bulletproof, dustproof Western hero at an age when he might want to start crumbling like Jimmy Stewart and Randolph Scott. Elmer Bernstein’s inarguably magnificent theme song is insulted by the sloppy, weightless tone of this remake. —Richard von Busack

During this month-long retrospective—Thursdays through Sundays—the Stanford Theatre looks at films set in various fantasy versions of Vienna, back when it was the capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Even that description is too narrow.

Berlinese directors abound here, too. Dreams of Emperor Franz Joseph’s decadent realm had a special resonance for numerous filmmakers, hired by Hollywood studios, as many of them had come to California from east of Berlin.

Allegedly, RKO Pictures had a sign up in the studio reading, “It’s not enough to be Hungarian, you must also be a genius.” Such was the flood of Eastern European talent in Hollywood. The month-long festival begins with four silent films billed with related sound films—either remakes or matched pairs. On Sept. 22, the legendary theater organist Dennis James accompanies Ernst Lubitsch’s The Marriage Circle (1929) along with its sound remake, One Hour With You (1932). In the latter, the arch-rogue Maurice Chevalier is a Parisian physician who dallies with both his wife (Jeannette MacDonald) and his wife’s frenemy (Genevieve Tobin). “I ask you, what would you do?” Chevalier asks the camera, caught as he is between the duties of hospitality and the laws forbidding adultery. Sept.

23: Pandora’s Box by the stodgy G. W. Pabst presents an early and indelible femme fatale, the 23-year-old Kansas-born Louise Brooks. Her adventuress, Lulu, is presented as a cool, willing victim, whose path leads from sexual indelicacies to the arms of Jack the Ripper. In an era of actresses who were gesticulators, writhers

and breast beaters, Brooks was as brilliantly impassive as her fellow Kansan, Buster Keaton. No one can rhapsodize like pioneering German film critic Lotte Eisner: “Is this still a woman—a human being—at all? Is it not rather the flower of some poisonous plant?” Pressed into nigh-80-year-old celluloid, this long-stemmed flower still has enough aroma left to intoxicate a viewer. The co-bill is a Josef von Sternberg melodrama with Marlene Dietrich, The Devil is A Woman (1935), in which a Spanish senorita drags a raffish man (a young Cesar Romero) through it, Carmen-wise.

Dietrich claimed it was her favorite movie “because they made me so beautiful.” It was her last film with Von Sternberg, a magician at using smoke and shadow to make Dietrich a haunting imago of early sound films. Sept. 24: Queen Kelly (1929) Erich von Stroheim was a director fascinated with perversity and greed; this small, imaginary Germanic kingdom has gone for partying and drink even before daisy-fresh American girl Patricia Kelly (Gloria Swanson) is seduced into it. In real life, Swanson had the upper hand and fired von Stroheim (recut, ruined, and denounced by its director, the original version ended up with Patricia entombed in a brothel). Billed with Sunset Boulevard, a more familiar Swanson performance; she’s the maniac silent movie star who feels time has stood still for her. It’s a seriously grotesque comedy—a very het up and lively piece of film noir.

Repeated viewings make it seem a bit Puritanical and ungallant, a company town’s defense of its long-standing policy of making older actresses redundant. (What is William Holden moaning about?

Norma Desmond is only 19 years older than he is, and in terrific shape. They would have known how to tolerate a situation like this in Vienna.) Sept. 25: Both versions of The Merry Widow, 1925/1934— the operetta plot best known as the springboard for Duck Soup.

Jeannette MacDonald is the lacy and well-endowed (with money) widow pulling the strings in a faraway Central European country.

T’S NOT EASY being part of San Jose’s art community. So it’s heartening when a prolific, multi-faceted and successful artist not only embraces, but pays tribute to, the “capital of Silicon Valley,” its art community and its landmarks, as local musician Cellista does on her new album, Finding San José.

Cellista, a.k.a. Freya Seeburger, used her classical music background and unconventional artistic sensibilities to compose a stylistically

varied yet cohesive soundtrack that takes the listener on a journey through the city she calls home.

She says San Jose has become her creative foundation, and this album is an offering to its artists.

The process to complete the record took over a year. Funded by a Kickstarter campaign, Finding San José raked in more than its $5,000 goal in September of last year, joining other local crowdfunded successes including K.Flay and The Limousines.

But unlike the conventionally structured works of those acts, Finding San José is a cinematic work; live selections will be performed at a screening of the album’s accompanying “making-of ” documentary, Cellista, at Campbell’s

Diamond in the Rough Film Festival later this month.

Seeburger is adamant that Finding San José is an experience—best consumed alone, by candlelight, eyes wide open, mind firmly in the present and in one sitting. “I do want my audience to work just a little bit and be present in my process.” says Seeburger.

The album's anachronistic tendencies blend modern elements such as beat boxing, field recordings and the looping of classical piano, cello and violin. The resulting music is introspective and emotional.

Atmospheric flourishes such as crowd chatter, trains screeching to a halt and the crunching of leaves underfoot on “St James Park” recall fall afternoons strolling through the historic and often troubled park, while a contemplative and patient approach brings freshness to Seeburger’s brief instrumental take on the Pixies classic, “Where is My Mind.”

But Seeburger isn't the only artist

on display here. Most cuts feature significant contributions from a host of local collaborators, such as the beatboxing of Emcee Infinite, rapping by DEM ONE, or poetry of David Perez. Photographer Cromwell Schubarth and painter Tulio Flores are featured in the album's packaging, combining with the tracks into something close to a multimedia collage.

The album was recorded at a handful of Bay Area studios as well as in Gallery Anno Domini, a venue that serves as an anchor point for the downtown San José art community and a place Seeburger calls her “creative refuge and sanctuary. It’s been a safe place for me to go when I am doubting myself and my process or struggling.

Cherri and Brian have always opened up their doors for me there.”

The amount of confidence and optimism Seeburger has in the local art scene is inspiring. “San Jose has been a well-kept secret,” she says.

“I used to enjoy that people in surrounding areas thought it was devoid of culture. It made me feel like I was in the know. I think in the past couple years there’s been a kind of artistic renaissance, especially in the downtown. Or rather, more people are owning up to the fact that San Jose has the best visual arts scene in the Bay Area.”

In an interesting feedback loop of sorts, Seeburger will be hosting two listening parties for her new album at Trials Pub on Sept. 21. The album happens to feature a track called “A Conversation at Trials,” where narrators recount a conversation about persistence in the pursuit of artistic success. Now the fruit of her creative effort—a success in itself—will be listened to and discussed at that very venue.

After experiencing Seeburger’s love letter to San Jose, perhaps you will be emotionally informed of a city you live in but haven’t paid enough attention to, or maybe it will deepen your appreciation for it, especially the next time you’re fighting traffic to get to an art event in San Francisco.

Renaissance Woman IN THE EVER expanding pantheon of country music, there are several performers that could genuinely be called living legends. Dolly Parton is one such individual. She has transcended the confines of her genre, making her presence known across the entertainment spectrum. For more than 50 years now, the beloved icon has touched fans through music, acting, writing, producing and beyond.

For many of her followers, though, Parton’s music remains the largest jewel in her multi-pronged crown. She recently returned to singing, songwriting and performing. Her latest album, Pure & Simple, was released just last month, and though she turned 70 earlier this year, Parton doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. She is currently in the midst of a 60-date U.S. tour in support of the record.

Fans can expect to hear some of her new tunes plus a selection of her biggest hits when she plays at Shoreline Amphitheatre this weekend. Parton is promising to include some rarer tracks and deep cuts in the set as well.

I’m a 35-year-old woman, and my boyfriend of a year is 43. Sadly, my friends and family don’t like him. They think he’s “not good enough” for me. Their argument: He doesn’t have a full-time job with benefits (like me), plus he smokes pot to relax; therefore, he is lazy and will live off me and my retirement money. (Sorry, but enjoying retirement alone isn’t my idea of a “secure future.”) He has a parttime job he likes, makes enough to pay his bills in a (small) house he owns, and saves for things he wants. He is loving, has my back to an unreasonable degree, and says he’s pretty sure he used up all his luck getting me. Unfortunately, all minds are made up; there’s no explaining what a deeply good man he is. I feel awkward bringing him to gatherings or even mentioning him. The worst, though, is my nagging question: Could they be right? —Torn There are people who chase their dreams, and there are those—like your boyfriend—who just chillax on the couch, smoking a doob, waiting for their dreams to be in the neighborhood and maybe knock on the door.

He does sound like a good man— which doesn’t necessarily mean he’s a good man to make a life with (which is why everybody’s campaigning for you to ditch him). Maybe you’re thinking, “Okay, so he’s kind of a laid-back dude. It’s 2016; can’t the woman be the breadwinner?” Well, yes, but his lack of drive is likely to be a problem—at least eventually.

Evolutionary developmental psychologist Bruce J. Ellis explains that there’s this notion by some social scientists called the “structural powerlessness hypothesis”—that women only go for powerful men because they themselves lack power. This, Ellis writes, is “directly contradicted” by research—on feminist leaders, for example—that finds that “high-power women (want) superpowerful men.” They aren’t all, “Well, I make plenty of money; I think I’ll marry Hot Julio, the pool boy.”

As for why this is, Ellis explains (as I often do) that ancestral women who went for mover-and-shaker men were more likely to have children who survived and passed on their genes.

“Over evolutionary time,” he writes, “evaluative mechanisms” were built into female psychology to push women “to detect and prefer males” with a “willingness and ability” to provide for them and their children.

A guy doesn’t necessarily have to be rich for you to get your “man with mate value!” box checked. What seems to matter is potential—that he is ambitious and has a reasonable shot at achieving what he’s going after.

Now, maybe you went for your sweet

underachiever as a reaction to jerks in your recent past—or because it’s supposedly “shallow” to want a partner to be, say, at least a certain height or making some kind of mark in business.

But, using the height example, if you really aren’t attracted to shorter guys, getting involved with one is basically benevolent cruelty. Sooner or later, your libido’s going to be all, “Okay, so you got drunk and went home with the garden gnome. But enough is enough.”

It is possible that you and Laid-Back Larry could live happily ever after. But ask yourself some questions: Where do you see yourself in five years? Could you count on him to put down the bong and go make money if you got sick? Will your friends and family come to accept him, or will you end up unhappily isolated? And finally, do you want kids? If so, consider that you can downscale your lifestyle but you can’t downscale your kid from needing dental care or hand him makeshift forceps to take the toy truck out of his nose.

Sure, this guy would probably be the ideal stay-at-home dad. But consider— in line with what Ellis explains—that a number of studies find that women married to a Mr. Mom often end up resenting and losing respect for him, and those marriages are more likely to end in divorce.

You probably need some time to figure all of this out. Because people read the words in letters (instead of yelling over them), maybe write one to your family to ask them to be kind to him at family functions—for your sake.

And finally, try not to be so dramatic about your options. You’re 35. The fertility train might be leaving the station pretty soon, but it’s not like this guy is your last chance before “Marriage is between a woman and her cat!” and “P.S. Snowball and I are registered at Bloomingdale’s and Petco.”

CBD Saves the Day

T

HE FIRST TIME I smoked pot was in Eric Schroeder’s garage in Fullerton, 1969. The high was different than now. Much more visceral.

Fast forward 10 years. Sonoma State. Consuming the occasional edible.

Getting a little uncomfortable. Forgetting I had graduated and attended another two years. I’m free to go? Fast forward 10 or 20 years. Pot definitely changed. Consuming pot had become an ordeal. Who the hell kidnapped the jovial Panama Red? This was knife-wielding-son-of-Chucky-with-spookysoundtrack pot. Paranoia. So I joined a country club and started drinking beer.

In 2008, my breathing faltered, and my words were getting choked off, like in the movies where someone is being strangled. Ak, lek argghh. You’re cho-choking me. Fortunately, I got an early diagnosis: adductor spasmodic dysphonia (AdSD). Huh? No known cure, but I could get Botox injections in my vocal cords or surgery to cut and reattach them. No thanks.

By 2009, my voice was gone. Friends and clients could no longer understand me. Soon, both were all gone. The dark years began. I ended up living in my mother’s basement.

I never gave up. While researching AdSD, an incident in 2011 never left my memory. A friend somehow persuaded me to smoke pot. I dutifully took a few hits and waited for Leatherface to start chasing me. But no. Something different was happening. I was a little high, but no paranoia. It was “puppies, rainbows and ice cream” pot. And my voice was perfect. I could talk normally!

In my head, I sounded like James Earl Jones. “Luke, this is CNN.” Wow! I tried to reproduce what happened. No luck. The old paranoia was back.

Why did pot make my voice normal one time but not others? The North Bay Bohemian (sister paper to Metro) provided the big clue I needed.

I heard former editor Gabe Meline on The Drive with Steve Jaxon talking about CBD. Gabe explained that there were other things besides THC in some strains of pot, and those other things, such as CBD, had amazing medicinal properties. I knew immediately that CBD was the key.

I began to avidly research CBD. I did volunteer work with Martin Lee of Project CBD. I began interacting with cannabis researchers around the world, learning about cannabinoids, terpenoids. More important, Martin introduced me to producers of CBD products. Eventually, I found the right ones. My voice normalized. Among its multiple properties, CBD is anti-spasmodic. That was all I needed.

My voice isn’t completely normal, but I can function. My life is back.

Synthesizer-er AUDIO OUTSIDER Don Buchla had a reputation as a contrarian troublemaker keen on pushing buttons beyond just his music.

Electronica trailblazer Don Buchla leaves a legacy of sound

ON BUCHLA, the legendary modular synthesizer pioneer, passed away last week at the age of 79.

Anyone currently playing a synthesizer, tweaking electronics for sound generation or making any sort of modern-day electronic keyboard music has Buchla to thank, at least partly.

While Bob Moog was the first one to officially release a modular

synthesizer as a commercial product, Buchla was probably the first one to envision modules with the intention of assembling them together into a live performance instrument.

As an engineer and a musician, Buchla was a daring, ornery innovator with a keen sense of what avant-garde musicians, composers and performers might want. His modular electronic music systems forever changed the way sound is created and controlled.

He also built the PA rig used on Ken Kesey’s Merry Prankster bus.

I never knew Buchla personally, but we were at the same party or dinner table a few times in the ’90s. My music professor at San Jose State, Allen Strange, wrote

the first electronic music textbook and knew Buchla for decades. They were both members of the Electric Weasel Ensemble during the ’70s.

The first music class I ever took at SJSU featured Allen showing us how an old Buchla system worked, using patch cords to connect oscillators, ring modulators, filters and other devices. That Buchla machine was a behemoth of an instrument, seemingly always in states of disrepair, yet it was a great intro to the guts of how commercial synthesizers worked.

As a lowly undergrad, this felt like receiving holy transmissions.

The lineage of sound and noise and musical outlaw invention was being passed down, via Buchla and Allen, straight to us. The rest of the students were barely technologically literate enough to use a word processor, so those of us patching oscillators to bandpass filters using banana plugs and creating sonic rackets that shook

the doors of the studio soon became the outcasts of the whole building.

On another front, this was right as Buchla was releasing his original Lightning and Thunder alternative MIDI controllers—again, ideas way ahead of their time. This was also right at the beginning of the era when dance music people first began to culturally appropriate the term “electronic music” and co-opt it into something entirely different. But that’s a different story.

Above all else, in those classes, Allen emphasized that Buchla was a contrarian troublemaker who went against the grain, a radical innovator who wasn’t cut from the same cloth as “those East Coast guys.” He didn’t build circuits just to put knobs and keyboards on them. He was interested in non-Western tunings and musical performance interfaces that didn’t yet exist. Right now, in 2016, we’re probably only a few years away from augmented reality-based musical interfaces. Once that finally happens, those technologies might likewise be traced back to ideas Buchla innovated. Possibly.

My most hysterical memory of Buchla occurred in 1992, when the SJSU music department hosted the International Computer Music Conference. I rotated between sound crew, stagehand and various gofer duties. We put on two concerts a day in Morris Dailey Auditorium and almost a week’s worth of tech for 100 different compositions that required different microphone arrangements, computer equipment configurations, homemade electronics, cabling, adapters and other scenarios for 16 hours a day. It probably took a year off my life.

One performance piece featured Buchla along with a few friends, and for some ridiculous reason they needed a 5-pin DIN extension cable 20 feet long. We didn’t have one.

Don handed me a 20-dollar bill and asked me, the student stagehand, to go to a store and find the right cable. I acted happy to oblige and scurried down to the Radio Shack on First Street—just north of where Billy Berk’s is now—but they didn’t have the cable. I was out of luck.

So I went back to the gig, mission unaccomplished, and returned the 20 bucks. Ever since then, my memories of that Radio Shack are inseparable from Don Buchla.

Now, both are no longer with us, yet both were institutions that left a serious mark on downtown San Jose.

OUR PAIRS OF chopsticks hungrily snatch and tear at sublimely cooked and seasoned meats that are peeling off of a scorching aluminum pan. Smoke, the smell of seared flesh and teeth eagerly gnawing away are all that remain of the skirmish. Without hesitation the next batch of meats are thrown atop of the grill, and the anticipation kicks in once again.

The above scene plays out time and again at Q-Pot, the newest Korean BBQ (KBBQ) and hot pot restaurant to hit San Jose’s East Side. It’s rare for a Korean restaurant to offer up both KBBQ and hot pot, but Q-Pot is an exception. Their all-you-can-eat (AYCE) KBBQ for lunch ($15.99) and dinner ($24.99 Mon-Thu 5pm; Fri. 3pm; and Sat-Sun all day) come with a slight upcharge ($3) for the hot pot. An assortment of banchan (Korean side dishes) is delivered to each table and range from the typical kimchi to some kind of sweet mashed potato dish that was addictive. Their nifty tablet ordering system is sleek and efficient.

With a straightforward interface one can order up the entire oeuvre of meats, soups, drinks and even hail someone to bring out a new grilling surface.

My one qualm about Q-Pot’s menu is that if one person wants hot pot—then everyone gets hot pot. I really wanted to sample their soup, but my cohorts were salivating for a meat-fueled frenzy. After some finagling, we were able to get the manager to relent on this rule. On that note, I ordered the Thai tom yum with thin-sliced beef, shiitake mushrooms, fried tofu and udon noodles. The broth was sweet, spicy and sour, and there were plenty of goodies in it to satisfy any soup lover. I had to stop myself halfway through so I wouldn’t be too full.

The lunchtime AYCE has a paired-down menu compared to the dinner, which has more “Korean-style meats” (e.g. beef tongue, beef belly, baby octopus). That said, the lunch menu still had plenty of tender morsels to choose from, including marinated pork bellies, pork cheeks, brisket, spicy shrimp and rib-eye steaks. While the pork bellies are always at the top of everyone’s list, we all agreed that the spicy pork bulgogi was the clear winner. If cooked correctly the (not-so) spicy marinade created an irresistibly crispy char.

Q-Pot’s grill-it-yourself KBBQ offers up a primal experience of sitting around a fire and cooking meat with friends, but in a hip and modern atmosphere. The only caveman-like grunts come from the delight of seeing the next round of meats brought forth.
