It was late afternoon behind the elementary school, most kids long gone, but a few of us working parents were still trickling in for pickup from after-school care. You had parked on the wrong side of the road, which would normally indicate some sort of desperation ... but no. You strolled out to your truck, backpacked kid in tow. Wrong-side parking happens to be a pet peeve of mine, but I didn’t say anything because I’m just not that person. The guy in the VW you almost crashed into when you pulled away, however, was definitely that kind of person. Every delicate ear on the playground heard what he—and I, since I'm being honest—thought of your parking job and general disregard for traffic rules.

Loud vs Proud STEVE BROWN is a special guy. How else to explain taking a position against LGBTQ antidiscrimination, then playing the race card and showing up uninvited at a press conference to shout down elected officials who are part of the LGBTQ community. Last week, Metro published a non-endorsement in the San Jose City Council race between labor-backed Democrat SERGIO JIMENEZ and Brown, a fundamentally misguided Republican.

METRONEWS. Brown argued that COM customers should simply take their business elsewhere, and that will serve those pesky business owners! We disagreed.

After seeing Metro’s story (Hey, thanks for reading!), Assemblyman EVAN LOW and county Supervisor KEN YEAGER, both openly gay, joined other electeds and civil rights activists to denounce Brown, who expressed a similar position in a campaign questionnaire this spring. Trying to play it both ways, Brown stormed the press conference and shouted down the speakers before the cameras turned their attention on the screwball in the back.

Wearing a tight fitting gray suit and purple tie, Brown argued that he understands discrimination better than anyone else at the press conference because he is black, before pivoting to suggest that laws respecting LGBTQ customers would actually discriminate against people of faith. San Jose Councilman ASH KALRA, who is terming out of the district Brown hopes to represent, told him to “learn how to be an adult,” while BAYMEC President JAMES GONZALES said Brown had “plenty of opportunities” to set the record straight before “he went bananas.” So who is Steve Brown? The council wannabe’s voting record suggests even he doesn’t know, as he has changed political parties three times in the last two years, according to the Registrar of Voters. Brown obviously has issues, but at least they’re out in the open now. Vote for Sergio Jimenez.

Strike 4 LEFT IN A LURCH Rochelle Kent, a 28-year-old mother of four had to scramble to find a new child care center after low enrollment rates forced the 4Cs Council to close hers last fall.

Nonprofit 4Cs Council accused of mismanagement and failing low-income children, families

HEN THE DAYCARE center for Rochelle Kent’s two youngest children shuttered on very short notice last fall, it took the single mom four months to find a replacement.

The 28-year-old mother of four enlisted help from her grandmother, siblings and other relatives to watch baby Ezio and his 2-year-old sister, Ayza, so she could work overtime at a public storage company.

“It was really hard to juggle everything,” says Kent, who had to coordinate her oft-unpredictable schedule with the availability of whoever volunteered to help babysit.

The Orchard Early Learning Center’s 2015 closure—in the thick of a school year, right before Thanksgiving—left 33 low-income families in the lurch. Kent collected more than 100 signatures for a petition to save the publicly subsidized preschool, to no avail. The doors closed two weeks after parents first heard it was at risk. On the last day, teachers had the toddlers stamp their chubby pinkand-yellow-painted handprints on a piece of posterboard, which they taped to the classroom door as a parting gift.

“They loved their teachers,” Kent says. “They were inseparable.”

The Community Child Care Council of Santa Clara County, the parent nonprofit commonly referred to as the 4Cs Council, blamed low enrollment.

But the people who work for the organization say the closure is not an isolated misstep, but a symptom of widespread dysfunction at the largest taxpayer-funded nonprofit in the South Bay. Other signs of trouble: canceled grant agreements, bitter labor disputes, a longstanding failure to meet enrollment targets in a slew of programs and an eviction that shuttered yet another daycare site in the past year.

“We’re trying to change all that,” says Mario Del Castillo, a case manager with two decades at the 4Cs Council under his belt. “Lack of staffing overburdens the people who work here, which affects their performance and leads them to get disciplined. And if people can’t meet their performance targets, then the agency can’t meet its performance targets.”

Such problems should raise the alarm at any organization, he says, but especially one the size of the 4Cs

him because he agreed to pay about $50,000 in restitution.

Court records indicate, however, that even his court-ordered payback may have come from someone else’s pocket.

In 2014, one of his former colleagues—a local dentist named Antonio Abiog— sued Menor for borrowing $48,500 without any intention of reimbursing him. By the end of July 2015, Abiog won by default because Menor was a no-show. With interest, the judgment amounted to $72,816. That doesn’t sit well with the 4Cs Council employees.

“Our budget comes from taxpayers to help so many vulnerable people,” says Thuy Vu, a team manager at the nonprofit. “We deserve greater accountability.”

Villaseñor, the CEO of 4Cs, declined to be interviewed for this story and Menor did not return requests for comment.

The nonprofit’s attorney, James Hendricks Jr., wouldn’t offer much in the way of specifics either, except to say that the council refuses to negotiate with Local 521 in the press. Spokesman Dan Orloff referred questions about the agency’s finances to outside agencies.

Vu says management is no more forthcoming with the people who work there. “There’s very little transparency,” she says. “We’ve seen the audits, but we still want answers.”

Around the time Orchard Early Learning Center closed its doors over low enrollment, the 4Cs Council lost another 140 child care slots in San Jose’s East Side. Last fall, the Alum Rock Union Elementary School District evicted the nonprofit from a facility

Founded on a shoestring budget in 1971 to offer free child care to destitute families, the council achieved its tax-exempt status within a few years and became the county’s sole referral agency for government-paid child care. The nonprofit now subsidizes early education for 5,500 kids a year, according to its most recent tax records.

Such service is invaluable because of the long-term benefits of early childhood education, which research has shown to improve academic performance and earning potential later in life.

Economically, it’s especially invaluable in the South Bay, where the high cost of living means that even families well above the federal poverty line struggle to afford daycare.

Of the 4Cs Council’s $47 million budget in 2015, about $40 million came from the California Department of Education (CDE), $2 million from the federally funded Early Head Start program, $325,000 from Santa Clara County and $2.2 million from service fees. The biggest expenditure, a little more than $29 million last year, paid for service providers. Salaries and benefits cost about $6.5 million. Though the nonprofit is subject to routine audits, employees still question its financial stewardship.

Last summer, all but 20 of the nonprofit’s 150 employees unionized to fight what they call unfair labor practices and curb runaway attrition rates that have left a 20 percent staffing vacancy. Suspicions about the agency’s finances have become fodder in more than a year of contentious labor negotiations which—14 months and four attorneys later—have yet to result in any agreement. The man at the helm, 4Cs Council CEO Fred Villaseñor, declined to comment for this story.

“There’s no trust,” Del Castillo says while picketing outside the agency’s north San Jose headquarters.“Too much money goes to overhead, not enough to the front lines. We’ve seen too many mistakes, and children are the ones who suffer.”

It doesn’t help that the CEO’s righthand appointee has a few skeletons in his closet, employees say. Ben Menor, current president of the 4Cs Council board of trustees, was forced out as executive director of the Northside Community Center a decade ago after a city audit found that he misused $219,000 in public funds. He later pleaded no contest to felony grand theft and faced jail time until late 2008, when a judge exonerated

STRIKE OUT Employees of Santa Clara County’s sole child care referral agency, the 4Cs Council, went on strike to protest what they call unfair labor practices at the publicly funded nonprofit.

9 on Sinclair Avenue. The eviction came barely six months after the child care council signed a 10-year agreement to sublease space from the scandal-plagued Mexican American Community Services Agency (MACSA). MACSA apparently failed to notify the school district, which violated the contract and prompted the litigation to kick out both MACSA and the 4Cs Council.

Villaseñor told the school board in January that the ouster took him by surprise and forced him to pull the plug on a $500,000 lease agreement and $70,000 in facility renovations.

But the people who work for him cited the eviction as yet another sign that the agency needs to clean up its act.

“Someone clearly failed to do their due diligence,” says Dolores Bernal, a spokeswoman for SEIU 521. “Dozens of children were affected.”

Another lapse came by way of a smaller grant from the city of San Jose for senior health and wellness services.

Incidentally, those services took place at the Northside Community Center, ground zero for Menor’s public theft scandal years ago.

The city’s Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services Department

awarded a $35,000 grant to the council in 2013 and renewed $25,000 of it the following year. But in an email sent July 24, 2015, to 4Cs Council finance manager Gabriela Alvarez, the city threatened to end the agreement over performance and transparency problems. The city pointed to a lack of documentation to prove that the nonprofit was serving enough senior citizens. It also found inaccurate reporting that exaggerated by 18 percent the amount of work performed under the grant agreement.

Despite those warnings and several months to take corrective action, the council still fell short of the agreed-upon benchmarks. In an email sent Feb. 12, the city notified Alvarez that it would pull the remaining $5,000 of the grant and tentatively disqualify the nonprofit from future grant consideration. “They didn’t deliver,” says David DeLong, a program manager in the city’s parks division. “They came in with a proposal that was pretty rich with activities, but weren’t able to make good on their end of the deal.”

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, which funds the 4Cs Council’s Early Head Start programs, has pointed to similar

mismanagement over much larger multimillion-dollar grants in recent years. In compliance reviews going back to 2011, the federal agency reported a litany of violations. The nonprofit failed to enroll enough disabled children, failed to hire a licensed mental health worker, failed to screen children before a mandated deadline and failed to implement procedures to make sure it meets its contractual obligations. The most recent report in 2016 noted that those specific issues have since been resolved, but cited ongoing concerns about a lack of staffing and supervision.

While Metro has yet to obtain pastyear program reviews from the CDE, the nonprofit’s biggest funding source, other records indicate a years-long pattern of compliance issues. A former 4Cs Council computer specialist filed a wrongful termination lawsuit against Villaseñor in 2009, claiming that the state found “serious deficiency” in the nonprofit’s attendance and payment records. The suit claimed that the CDE threatened to defund the food program and mark Villaseñor unqualified and ineligible for similar grants in the future, unless he brought the house in order.

Next school year, the child care

council stands to lose hundreds of thousands of dollars in CDE funding—$377,959, to be exact—for a subsidized preschool program after falling 37 percent below enrollment targets. The nonprofit reported only 31,520 out of a contractually set 50,200 enrollment days in between 2015 and this year, according to the CDE. Orloff, the council’s spokesman, says the shortfall reflects “a reduction in the available market” after the state launched a new transitional kindergarten program. Under the new rules, children who turn five between Sept. 2 and Dec. 2 can enroll in public schools instead of the council’s daycare centers. “So, this year, 4Cs Council started its marketing earlier with increased training of staff responsible for enrollment sales and marketing,” Orloff says.

Despite the so-called market reduction, there remains a huge unmet need for child care. According to the Public Policy Institute of California, roughly half the children in the state come from families in or on the verge of poverty.

A 2016 report by the Right Start Commission—a group of lawmakers, academics and company executives— found that 70 percent of families with children aged six and younger cannot afford the average daycare costs of $10,000-plus-a-year per kid. Yet many working families who make too little to pay out of pocket make too much to qualify for public subsidies like those offered through the 4Cs Council.

A bill by Assemblyman Rich Gordon (D-Menlo Park) seeks to change that by authorizing a pilot program in Santa Clara County to allow local flexibility in setting eligibility criteria. Gov. Jerry Brown has until Sept. 30 to act on AB 2368, which was co-authored by Assemblyman Evan Low (D-Campbell) and state Sen. Jim Beall (D-San Jose).

Even if a family does qualify, however, with only 300,000 subsidized slots available in the whole state, demand far exceeds supply. As a result, reports show that a million children are relegated to unlicensed and unregulated daycare settings. All of which makes any cuts in local subsidies a huge loss, says Kent, who still relies on the 4Cs Council to watch her kids so she can keep her job and provide for her family.

“I don’t know everything going on behind the scenes,” she says. “I want to know I can trust them to take care of things.”

A

FTER TOURING AN exhibition put on by Yanfeng, the world’s largest auto interior company, I hailed an Uber driver who happened to be on his first day of work. Six fares in and loving it, he sparked up the customary chit-chat, asking what I’d been doing.

I stuttered. I didn’t want to deflate his excitement. I’d just seen the future, and it didn’t include him.

Yanfeng’s showroom prototype sported a soon-to-be omnipresent feature that will replace Uber, Lyft, taxis—basically any vehicle service that requires an actual driver. But, more cheerily, it’ll also reduce traffic, pollution and death, plus save trillions of dollars. The revolutionary feature?

A steering wheel that nestles into the dash during autonomous mode.

ever let automated driving overtake the manual method. Han Hendriks, a Yanfeng vice president with a crisp German accent, sighed and answered with the casual surety of a man easily in his four-thousandth rendition of hearing this question.

“Autonomous flying was introduced to the commercial airline market in the ’70s,” he says. “And without any exception, all the pilots said, ‘Never.

I will always fly my plane.’ Today, all pilots fly autopilot. No exceptions. All of them. It's human nature, apparently.”

To Hendriks, anyone opposed to autonomy is thinking about it wrong.

Bay Areans might love to wind through eucalyptus-lined mountain roads. But automated driving, at least the first wave, will take over navigation nobody wants to do—Highway 101-esque straightaways or traffic jams where the average American wastes somewhere between 38 to 81 hours every year.

“Sure you love driving in your [Porsche] 911 on Sunday,” Hendriks says.

“But do you love driving when you’re in a traffic jam every morning? Every evening? That’s a different driving. I love driving, but I hate traffic.”

Automated driving wouldn’t just let people nap, work or do whatever in traffic. It would also drastically improve safety and reduce commute times. Intercommunicating cars could “platoon” in columns too tightly packed for humans to ever sustain—an arrangement that’s denser and more aerodynamic. This could end gas-guzzling, stop-start jams and spawn a ripple effect of positives as its usage expands.

“First of all it’s safety because 95 percent of all accidents are human error,” Hendriks says. “The second one is cost, because all these accidents cost a fortune—hospitals, insurance, safety systems and so forth.”

The estimated savings are huge. In 2014, 32,675 people died in automobile accidents. Economically speaking, the Department of Transportation (DOT) computed the value of a human life at $9.2 million—so that’s a little over $300 billion. On top of that, the Center for Disease Control estimates these deaths represented a work and medical loss of $44 billion. On top of that, 2.3

million people were injured in cars in 2013. The DOT ranges injury costs from minor ($27,000) to unsurvivable ($9.2 million). It’s somewhat lazy math, but if we even that out at 100 grand per accident—we’re looking at around a quarter-trillion.

So before even factoring in costs of safety features, car repairs, lawsuits and insurance, that’s a conservative $674 billion and tens of thousands of lives saved, every year.

“We could prevent 95 percent of [lives lost],” says Amit Garg, an in-house venture capitalist for Samsung who spends much of his days thinking about the mobility revolution. He notes that it will “create huge amounts of opportunity” and “change the societal landscape.” It will also potentially dislocate the millions of people who drive people and things around for a living.

“I think it will be better for us as a society,” Garg says. “Some people will have to retrain jobs. There will be losers and winners.”

And for those in favor of a habitable planet, a report by the Intelligent Transportation Society of America claims these cars could chip away at 2 to 4 percent of oil usage and greenhouse gas emissions each year over the next decade. The real reductions will come as we replace gas tanks with batteries and cleaner technology. But with pioneers like Tesla, it’s not inconceivable that autonomous driving and sustainable power develop hand-in-hand.

And more immediate than the eventual demise of person or planet, automation offers an otherwise nonpurchasable commodity: time.

“The average commute globally is 40 minutes, one way,” Hendriks says.

“So now you can give people that two times per day. What is a driver going to do when he's in a vehicle with that time? And how is the interior going to support this new activity—this relaxing, working, eating, exercising?”

Yanfeng has cooked up some modest but sexy changes. In autonomous mode, the front two seats rotate 18 degrees to facilitate more natural conversations and recline to a relaxed, but not necessarily sleep-inducing angle. The plastic surfaces buzz when

touched, then kill the germs left behind in under three hours—a crucial feature for shared vehicles. Tucked into the side panels, LED lights glow in any pigment, pattern or brightness desired.

Next to a tablet embedded in the dash, there’s a spot for phones to sit and sync with the car. Between the shins of the front passengers, there’s a cubby for something purse-sized.

Like a collegiate lecture hall desk, a small table folds out of the huge central console towards the driver.

The inside of the console is lined with tracks for tambour dividers that can be rearranged to make larger compartments, which could fit a half-dozen books or smaller “secret” compartments to sock away valuables.

All of this sits above a blue-lit minifridge that can be pushed open to back seat passengers at the touch of a button.

Since “80 percent of car use is by one or two people,” Hendriks says, frontriding passengers will be able to fold down the back seats, then extend their chairs horizontally. There, they can gaze at the stars through the sunroof, watch a film on their ceiling or—ahem— engage in other activities for people with time and privacy (facilitated by adjustable window opacity).

Thirty corporations—including Google, Apple, Microsoft, Tesla, BMW, Mercedes, Ford, GM, Honda, Toyota, Volkswagen and Uber—are developing their own vehicles.

A report by the University of Michigan predicts autonomous functions will be standard on a majority of cars in the 2050s.

These automobiles could drop passengers off at their destination, then wait by circulating on less busy streets or parking themselves in tighter-packed lots. Way out in the future, the car might leave the lot, pick up remotely ordered groceries, nab the kids from a playdate and then snag the original passenger before driving home.

BUTTON PUSHERS Yanfeng has designed a state-of-the-art interior that follows the path of modern-day airplanes.

Stripped of a steering wheel, speedy engine, brake/gas pedals and most bulky safety features, these Pixar-esque vehicles could be ideal for ridesharing in low-speed, high-traffic metropolitan areas. Vehicles constantly circulating from one request to the next could be increasingly useful as roughly twothirds of humanity is projected to live in cities by the century’s midpoint.

Last month, MIT spinoff Nutonomy began piloting a small number of autonomous taxis on the streets of Singapore. This month in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Uber will test out 100 self-driving Volvo SUVs, though they will be supervised by human drivers.

“You might have parts of large cities where no human-driven vehicle would be allowed,” says Dorothy Glancy, a lawyer who has been studying the possibilities of automated vehicles for more than a decade. “You’d have a whole bunch of autonomous vehicles available to serve the people in those areas, and it might be considerably safer.”

These advances, however, come with grim news for the job market.

Hundreds of thousands of car mechanics and drivers will likely become unnecessary, along with 1.6 million American truckers. Daily, trucks transport 70 percent of all cargo in the United States, or $11.4 trillion

of freight. But since deregulation during the Carter administration, this bedrock profession has been transformed into a “sweatshop on wheels,” where drivers routinely work lonely, 10-plus hour days for wages that occasionally work out to less than minimum wage. At the end of 2015, the American Trucking Association reported a shortage of nearly 50,000 drivers, one that’s expected to grow to 175,000 by 2024.

The current landscape is far from perfect. Trucks only account for 1 percent of the cars on the road, but produce 28 percent of vehicle-based pollution. One in seven are empty, leading to increased congestion, and they kill approximately eight people a day in accidents.

To modernize and improve this shipping method, two Google alums—Anthony Levandowski and Lior Ron—founded Otto, a startup pioneering autonomous truckdriving. They seek to retrofit existing trucks with updated sensors, software and other modifications. And they recently completed a test-drive of their technology on a public highway. After further upgrades and research, their goal is to spread to “every corner of the U.S. highway system.” On Aug.18, Uber announced that it had acquired

Yet another usage could happen in last-mile situations at hospitals, universities and amusement parks, where automated shuttles could be used as rarely or frequently as necessary to facilitate disability requests.

But we’re not there, yet. The most advanced autopilot models— pioneered by Tesla, BMW and Mercedes Benz—don’t trust their cars enough. They allow for cruising on highways, either open or congested, and that’s about it.

Despite the limitations, it’s still a wild ride. Hendricks showed me a video of himself bombing down a European freeway at 130 mph in a BMW 7-Series with his hands off the wheel—well, most of the time.

“It’s a safety system where you have to touch the wheel every 15 seconds,” he says. “And that will go away over time because it's kind of silly. But you don’t need pedals. You don’t need your hands on the steering wheel.

The car drives itself. I actually closed my eyes for a minute, just to sense how that feels. It is unbelievable and you can buy that today.”

*** Since the 1939 World’s Fair, audiences have been dazzled by visions of automated highways. Self-driving cars have existed in prototype since the 1950s. But a promo video from General Motors depicted something closer to Disneyland’s Autopia than anything of modernity. GM’s Jetsonian vision of the future depicted a cheery family driving down a highway bifurcated by a guiding track. When they want to shift over to autopilot, they place a call to an operator in a control tower.

“It could stay in the lane and everything, but it assumed an infrastructure that didn't exist,” says Dr. Chris Kitts, director of the Robotic Systems Lab at Santa Clara University.

In 2004, the U.S. government got serious about developing this technology with the DARPA Grand Challenge—offering a million dollars to whoever created a vehicle that could drive itself through 150 miles of the Mojave Desert. Carnegie Mellon’s did the best—making it a little over seven miles before getting stuck on a rock. The prize money rolled over and doubled for the

2005 contest, but pride proved to be the primary incentive.

“The amazing thing is that the industries and universities that joined in on this probably spent 100 times the amount of money that was actually offered as the grand prize,” Kitts says.

“So it was this massive leveraging of investment in autonomous vehicles.”

The next year, Stanford and Carnegie Mellon faced off in a friendly rivalry.

Stanford, headed by Sebastian Thrun, a former professor at Carnegie Mellon, finished first. Stanley, their Red Bullsponsored Touareg, came outfitted with GPS, cameras and five mounted LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) units. LIDAR is so sensitive that, under the right conditions, it can detect single molecules. These combined technologies generated a 3-D map of the environment with the aid of six, intrunk Intel processors. All of this guided Stanley’s electric motor, which replaced the steering wheel. In 2007, Carnegie Mellon would get their revenge when they won the DARPA Urban Challenge.

“All of the individual technologies, sensing the road, sensing obstacles, being able to drive, all that stuff, already sort of existed,” Kitts says. “It was doing it at

the speeds that you drive at—to do it without having all the time in the world to think about the situation and process the data. That was the challenge.”

Thrun brought what he learned to Google, and the company’s cars have self-driven more than 1.5 million miles (almost) accident-free, mapping the planet as they did so.

In one incident that can be partially blamed on the autonomous vehicle, the car had sought to avoid roadside sandbags by merging into a lane in front of a VTA bus. The car—and the person sitting inside the car, but not driving—thought the bus would yield.

It didn’t. So the car nudged the side of the bus at a harmless two mph.

“It was no big deal,” Glancy says.

“But it does expose the fact that the algorithms that drive our driverless cars have certain predictions about how other cars will behave. So they reprogrammed the algorithm to presume that large vehicles such as heavy trucks and busses will not yield to the car in the curb lane of the road.”

The first wave of automated vehicles will have to share roads with unpredictable human drivers, and the results to date have been mixed. In July,

create a pretty realistic simulation. It would be able to detect oncoming storms, obstacles or other undrivable conditions; then stop or send the vehicle on alternate routes, creating the most efficient distribution of traffic possible.

Lawmakers would also have to alter tailgating laws, speed limits and licensing requirements as well as resolve who is legally liable if systems fail. Plus, car insurance must be reworked as California factors in the projected reliability of the driver into its rates, which isn’t as important if software does the bulk of the driving.

But just as all drivers aren’t equal, the various automation programs may not be equal either. So will the cars all run on the same, top-shelf software? Or will there be variation? And premium prices for safer technology?

According to Glancy, there will be the usual dance between standardization and competing operating systems. “It’s not at all clear that they will universalize the operations of an autonomous vehicle across makes and models,” she says.

“The trouble is that we don’t know enough about how these technologies work. We’re much better off with a bunch of different technologies out there competing with each other to figure out what the best one is.”

The final, scariest potential factor is data collection. With the internet, we’ve surrendered an astonishing amount of private information for the privilege of using the mandatory technology. And Uber’s God View already showed how dystopian our autonomously driven future could be.

Uber’s program views all cars on the road and all waiting passengers while also tracking who went where and for how long. When anonymous, it’s a nifty function. But to impress investors at one launch party, the hosts displayed the names of various customers. Using this information, one guest contacted entrepreneur Peter Sims with his exact location, updating as he cruised in an Uber through New York. Sims, understandably displeased, blasted Uber online and no longer uses the service.

regulations, California mandates that all data tracking must be made obvious to the consumer of the vehicle, a good step for privacy. But the agency also imposes burdensome monthly reports from manufacturers, requires that a licensed driver be in the vehicle at all times and only allows consumers to lease vehicles rather than buy them.

“I don't think anybody wants to be the first regulator to have permitted something very dangerous on the road,” Glancy says. “We can anticipate all kinds of potential problems. But we really need to get out there and try it and we’ll likely find things that we didn’t think of. You can be overly cautious about planning for all of the eventualities to the point where you strangle the innovation.”

On the other hand, other modern inventions, like social media, proliferated without the collective pause for consideration. And stretching back further, the auto industry never predicted they’d be major culprits in the destabilization of our climate.

“In many cases [of technological advancement], we put no thought into it, but we proceeded,” Kitts says.

“The fact that we’re even having the conversation, I think is powerful.”

A shift this extreme is understandably frightening, but it’s already begun under the cautious eyes of smart, qualified people. The revolution will be gradual until one day autonomous driving will make manual driving as antiquated as scrubbing clothes on a washboard.

“The average housewife used to spend four hours a day washing,” Hendriks says. “Then the washing machine came and she got four hours back. Then the dishwasher, and then the microwave. And they took off really quickly because the value was time.”

Driving is embedded in America’s DNA, much as the now-mechanized processes of manufacturing and farming once were. But during our shortened commutes, we will soon no longer have to mundanely tilt a wheel to stay between the lines. With those extra hours, we can do as little, or as much, as we want. Despite the concerns surrounding autonomous driving, this technology will soon be knit into our society. We have always adopted and adjusted to robots that save us money, make us safer and give us more time.

Apparently, it’s human nature.

Tesla passenger Joshua Brown died after a tractor-trailer crossed his lane while he was watching Harry Potter, according to the truck’s driver. Conversely, another Tesla user named Joshua (Neely) claims that autopilot helped him navigate to an emergency room when he had a heart attack while driving.

Dueling anecdotes aside, Tesla stresses that their technology remains in beta—meaning it is prone to failure and drivers must be ready to react at any time. But the temptation to let your attention stray in autonomous mode seems borderline irresistible, especially since the technology's whole appeal is to do just that.

As advanced as LIDAR and the other overlapping technologies are, there are still some scenarios—such as snowy country roads or skyscraper-lined “urban canyons”—where even the redundant means of mapping and navigating an environment fail and the car would turn control back over to a human driver.

“Imagine a scenario where the car says, ‘I don't know what to do. Wheel’s yours,’” Kitts says. “Right at the last second, you’re being told to take control and you haven’t been paying attention, and you haven’t driven in six months.

[Without] situational awareness, you completely lose the ability to really see something on the fly.”

Google’s Bubble Car has ceded control to sensors and software. Their solution to danger is pulling over to the side of the road—a response which wouldn’t have prevented Brown’s death, but might have been acceptable if surrounded exclusively by autonomous cars. Also, without the ability to take control of the vehicle at any time, drivers could be subject to hacks.

“It's one of the most difficult security challenges out there,” Glancy says, adding that anyone who demands proof of a secure system is missing the point. “It’s completely stupid because if they told you how it was secured, it wouldn’t be secure. But these systems have to be secure, not necessarily just for malicious people, but also kids playing around to see if they can cause havoc on the 101.”

Still, a larger network would be useful, especially when it comes to navigating spontaneous obstacles. One car on its own can only map so far, but band them together—kind of like how Bruce Wayne did with cellphones in The Dark Knight—and they could

Reeling in the years: remembering 12 years of Camera 12

FTER MORE THAN a decade of presenting indie flicks and summer blockbusters alike, San Jose’s Camera 12 theater complex has shut down for good. The closure is a terrible blow to Silicon Valley moviegoers—and especially those living in downtown San Jose.

The finale isn’t a complete surprise: Camera 12 had dwindling audiences and had been offering ultra-low-priced bargain matinees. Even in a state of shabbiness, with its graffiti-scratched plexiglass poster windows facing the light rail line, this theater was something

far more than just a mere building or a business. In some ways, Camera 12 was the center of downtown. Nightlife revelers passed it hopping between SoFA and San Pedro Square, and it was impossible to miss when passing from Plaza De Cesar Chavez to San Jose State.

No one ran the theater longer than the locally based, independent Camera Cinemas, which has been managing movie theaters in downtown San Jose since 1975. Longtime moviegoers have a thousand memories of the Camera 12 building. Mine go back to the surprisingly ill-fated multiplex’s opening in 1996. I was interviewing its then-manager, a type who could have been in any business from furniture to electronics. I was having a hell of a time trying to get him to talk about cinema. He seemed less interested in the movies than he was about the quality of the carpets.

The United Artists Pavilion, as it was named then, was a state-of-the-art theater complex at the time. However, it was doomed by low turnout and high rents, rumored to be at $1 million a year. The since-bankrupt United Artists theater chain reportedly wanted out of the deal six months after they opened. During the weekend of Jan. 15, 2000, the steel and glass showpiece closed without warning. The theater’s lights were left on to burn out in their sockets. Seeking to avoid a Monday morning restraining order, UA workmen looted the complex during the weekend. The sound equipment was ripped out with such haste the screens were left damaged.

In the bleak years after 9/11, the former UA Pavilion was a haunted edifice in a half-empty shopping center. Even before the terror attacks hurt local businesses, some sought to fix the problem of the theater with a bulldozer. As Genevieve Roja reported for Metro in December 2000, Redevelopment Agency head Susan Schick had argued for the demolition of the theater. It was, at that point, a four-

year-old building that cost taxpayers $4.6 million and caused the eviction of five small businesses to build.

“The theater is obsolete,” Schick said then. “It’s not a theater built to modern-day standards.” The plan was to level the complex and replace it with a mixed-use development as tall as the Fairmont Hotel across the street.

Pam Kelly, then-publicity person for the Camera Cinemas, knew well the risk of being a cinema exhibitor.

In 1999, she told me: “When the UA Pavilion was being planned, we warned the city that this might happen. They wouldn’t listen to us. They thought we were being crybabies.”

Ultimately, the Camera Cinemas swallowed a megaplex that was meant to engulf their own two small downtown theaters. They fixed up the Camera 12 with an expensive renovation, ripping out walls, replacing the seats and spending $30,000 to get the escalators up to code.

Now this whale of a theater will be empty again. One question about its demise concerns the fate of the Cinequest festival. After noting his regrets and sending his thanks to the Cameras’ James Zuur and Jack NyBlom, Cinequest co-founder Halfdan Hussey claims Cinequest is on track for Feb. 27, 2017, with exhibition sites and dates to be announced.

“Cinequest has been planning for this day, since we had received warnings for three years about the prospective closure,” Hussey says. “We have some great alternate venues that we’re negotiating. We’ll wait until we get our deals done, and probably announce with the lineup on January 26.”

Cinequest has been rebranded as a “Film and VR festival,” which suggests changing times in movie watching.

Statistically, there are more movie screens in America than ever before— some 40,000 nationwide. Yet there’s some weight to director Joe Dante’s words: “Cinema is a 20th century art form, and the 20th century is over.”

After several seasons of unnecessary sequels, prequels and reboots, one sees the need for exhibitors who can bring cinema into the 21st century, through special attention to worthwhile movies.

The Camera 12 may be out of business, but that special attention will continue: the Cameras will still be maintaining the very busy Camera 7 in Campbell, the Los Gatos Theater and the Camera 3 in downtown San Jose.

EQUINE ODYSSEY ‘Odysseo’ by Cavalia, which comes to San Jose for the first time this week, tells the story of humanity’s connection to horses.

Cirque Du Saddle FOR MILLENNIA, humans and horses have shared a special bond. A new production from the Quebec-based Cavalia aims to tell story of mankind’s long and complex relationship to these majestic creatures.

Odysseo, the touring program from the Canadian equestrian and acrobatic performance troupe, premiered in 2011 and this week comes to San Jose for the first time.

The $30 million production is bigger than its previous entertainment, with over 100 tour buses, 65 horses and 48 performers, including riders, acrobats and musicians.

Artistic director and creator Normand Latourelle says Odysseo is a show unlike any other.

“I think it’s the best show that people can witness, ever,” Latourelle says.

Latourelle, who helped Cirque Du Soleil get up and running in its early years, came up with the concept to combine high-flying acrobatics with equestrian performance, founding the company in 2003. The company’s first production, Cavalia: A Magical Encounter Between Human and Horse has been touring since then, playing to more than 40 million spectators.

It took Latourelle and his team eight years to create Odysseo. With the help of HD projections on a screen three times larger than a standard cinema screen, Odysseo manages to take viewers on a journey where human and horse travel together through lush forests and beautiful landscapes, all under what Latourelle says is the largest big-top tent in the world.

“We project images that are so high definition, you get a feeling that it’s for real,” Latourelle says.

The stars of the show are the horses, and like human stars, they sometimes like to improvise. Elise Verdoncq, a rider for Cavalia, works with up to 10 horses at a time, leading them with only her voice.

“Sometimes it happens, a horse wants to play and have fun,” she says, referring to the horses getting distracted. “There is no way to react, you just let the horse be a horse.” In the end she says, this playful interaction is what people enjoy the most. Every horse has their own name, and when Verdoncq feels they are ready to return to their position, she simply calls them back. This bond between her and the horses makes for some amazing performances. —Stacy Torres

Though ‘Sully’ has issues, Eastwood’s film touts worthy hero

IVING THE AUDIENCE what they want—a fantastic aerial disaster in which no one gets hurt—Clint Eastwood’s often-pretty-good Sully is highlighted by the self-effacing underacting of Tom Hanks as Chesley Sullenberger. This time, Eastwood is certainly lionizing a higher grade of person than American Sniper’s Chris Kyle.

Appropriately, Hanks plays the Diablo Valley-based pilot as a dream movie hero—soft-spoken, reluctant to accept praise. Nerveless, in the

cockpit, the fear only strikes him later when he’s alone, in the bath, or outrunning the anxiety in jogging sessions late at night.

Winging to Charlotte from LaGuardia, US Airways Flight 1549 encountered a flock of Canada geese.

The birds exploded both engines on the Airbus A320. Eastwood’s film suggests the real ordeal was to come: suspicious inquiry from the government agents who believed that Sullenberger could have brought the jet home to one of two nearby airports, instead of splashing down on the river.

The story of Sullenberger’s forced water landing in the Hudson on Jan. 15, 2009, is natural material for a movie. The silent, powerless jet gliding over the Manhattan skyscape is bad enough in ordinary screen; in IMAX it must be terrifying. Hanks handles the wheel with his fear

swallowed down, leaving a rugged Aaron Eckhart (as Flight 1549’s first officer, Jeff Skiles) to handle the reactions. Eckhart does the slow burns, the skepticism and utters the seeming sole joke in the movie—an aside about water temperature.

As in American Sniper, there’s a nervous wife at home; a squandered Laura Linney doing the very actingover-the-telephone that she recently satirized on Inside Amy Schumer. (There, Linney was the Oscar-nominated wife in the imaginary Canadian Sniper, shouting over the gunfire: “I can’t hear you over all that snipering!”)

So Anna Gunn (Breaking Bad) is left to represent the women in the audience. If the National Transportation Safety Board conducts itself like the jury members in the trial of Joan of Arc, Gunn’s wide, square face, suffused with emotions, shows us that even before the results come in, she knows—deep in her heart—that Sully did the right thing.

The indication of government ill-will has been criticized by the NTSB officials who don’t enjoy being presented as

villains. Perhaps they shouldn’t have taken it personally. Clint Eastwood has been in an unusual business for more than 50 years, and I suspect he thinks that air agencies operate in the same way the movie world does. Why else would the committees, in their beige meeting rooms, look so much like a film press junket, in which half the critics present aren’t convinced by the story they’re hearing? Sully’s complaints about computer simulations that leave out the humanity might as well be an old-time director complaining about CG characters. Being pestered

by Katie Couric and patronized by Dave Letterman, being buttered up or manhandled by odd fans, seeing yourself on all the Times Square video screens at once: these are a movie star’s problems.

Opening on the 15th anniversary weekend of 9/11, Sully is consoling counterprogramming. “We don’t get much good news here in New York … especially regarding airplanes,” says a minor character here, lest we forget.

And Sully is a particularly touching film when watched in Silicon Valley, where age discrimination is considered a smart business practice.

No one of a certain age forgets that Captain Sullivan was 57 when he saved the lives of some 150 passengers.

We all know what Eastwood thinks of Michael Moore. So it’s bemusing that Moore caught an angle on Sully’s post-Flight 1549 career that Eastwood neglects, in his documentary Capitalism: A Love Story.

Rather than merely being a hero who fought down a nasty, jesting-Pilate government agency, Sully asked the government to help airline pilots at a hearing. He testified against the weakening of minimum standards for pilot experience being demanded by the airline industry lobby. As Moore observed, the speech was underattended by lawmakers.

But the stand shows what kind of man Sullivan is: someone who saved lives not just because of his own calm-under-pressure, skill and amazing guts, but because of sterling technology and the strength of regulations.

Revivals JULIUS CAESAR/ ANIMAL CRACKERS

(1953/1932) If all this Shakespeare adaptation had going for it were Marlon Brando’s Marc Antony, it would still be worth revisiting. Director Joseph Mankiewicz (All About Eve) has a favorite character, Edmond O’Brien’s grim Casca, the reportorial nobleman disgusted by the “foolery”—the dog-and-pony show that Caesar and his disciple Antony put on with the thrice-offered crown. But the other actors have their due: James Mason as the frightened, bad-nerved Brutus, looking unusually slight among the co-conspirators, and John Gielgud as the shallower, slicker Cassius, who turns Brutus to assassination. Louis Calhern is very much the Chicago ward boss as Caesar; he is an easily flattered bruiser who has already begun to refer to himself in the third person, always an alarming sign in a politician.

Every high school student keelhauled through Julius Caesar can say by rote, “It’s a play about too much ambition.”

Instead, Shakespeare savages the idea of self-made royalty, lamenting the end of the Republic and the “serpent’s egg” of absolutism hatching. There’s a part of the viewer that must mourn that the conspirators didn’t ice Antony when they had the chance. First, Antony breaks a handshake deal with the senators, then he craftily works his own gambit to set the mob on fire. Brando has to make his “Friends! Romans!

In his clouded brow and half-smirk of triumph, we see a master politician at work. “As the people warm to him, he is thinking, ‘suckers,’” wrote critic Anthony Lane.

Maybe so, but we’re grudgingly on Brando’s side, because we’ve seen the look on his face and understand what he’s concealing from the crowd: “Are they buying it?” The subject here is of the peculiar ugliness of public life and the twofold choice available: those who overcome their disgust and get their hands bloody like Mason’s Brutus. Or those, like Brando’s Antony, who are shrewd enough to get their dirty work done for them. BILLED WITH Animal Crackers. A Long Island house party is host to a strange guest: Capt. Jeffrey T. Spaulding (Mr. Groucho Marx), the African explorer who, with courage and defiance, risked his life for science: “One night I shot an elephant in my pajamas. How he got into my pajamas, I’ll never know.” This hero and his young secretary, Horatio (Zeppo Marx), rest from these travels at the fancy estate of a plump and wealthy goose (Margaret Dumont). To earn their keep, they foil art thieves and dally with visiting riffraff: the pianist Emanuel Ravelli (Chico Marx) and his odd associate “The Professor” (Harpo Marx).

STILL GOT IT? Jerry Lewis proves he still has his wits about him in ‘Max Rose.’

Noah’s Dork DECADES AFTER HIS heyday, Jerry Lewis is still a dreadful and awesome figure overshadowing comedy. Lewis has a vast wavelength: sometimes he’s great, and when he’s bad, he’s even greater. Daniel Noah’s 2013 indie movie Max Rose—was it released or did it escape?—gives Lewis a well-deserved part. If the movie is tripe, Lewis fills a lot of ruminative closeups. It gives him a chance to dwell in a favorite realm, the world of hurt, betrayal and rancor. As his son, San Jose-raised actor Kevin Pollak stands up to verbal abuse by standing up to Lewis’s obscene wrath. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen him better.

The elderly Max Rose (Lewis) just buried his wife of 65 years—the funeral is shot from a POV of about 100 yards back, deliberately robbing Jerry of a big moment of self-castigating oration about his failures as a husband. In moments like this, Noah is determined to make this drama artistic, as if to cool down Lewis’ wetter qualities; the colors are brightened to the point of a neon city in a film noir.

At home, Max discovers a piece of inscribed jewelry given to his wife by an admirer some

60 years previously. After questioning the ghost of the wife (Claire Bloom) Max finally has a breakdown and is sent to assisted living. There, one of his cronies (Lee Weaver) conveniently has the missing bit of info that can connect this aggrieved widower to the man who Max Rose tried to steal his wife.

The lover is played by 83 min, unrated a sinister Dean Stockwell, Opening at the as if he were Clare Quilty Opera Plaza in San Francisco in Lolita. Max’s grown-up granddaughter Annie (Kerry Bishe) is loyal enough for 10 women, and her sentiment gives this film a large, sticky heart—what if, indeed, Max had been as bad a husband as he claimed he was when he was trying to upstage the corpse at a funeral? The way Annie, as well as Max’s other grandkids, respond is Lewis’ way of exculpating himself: he accuses himself of terrible wrongs and then gets a jury of children to find him innocent. In his 90s, he’s still in possession of not only his marbles, but everyone else’s; the movie is in this narrow sense a triumph for Lewis.

Eric Victorino to play first SJ solo show at C2SV festival

A

FTER FRONTING two critically acclaimed and commercially successful musical projects, one might assume South Bay native Eric Victorino would be comfortable on stage and confident in his own skin. But that’s not always the case.

In fact, right up until moment he went on stage for the first solo performance of his career, Victorino says he was terrified.

“It was scary up until the second

it started,” he says of his recent appearance at PopScene—the weekly indie dance music party hosted by Live 105’s program director and DJ, Aaron Axelsen.

Furthermore, he adds, he can only really point to one consistent lyrical theme on his forthcoming solo debut.

“It’s this feeling of doubt,” he says of the songs on the soon-to-be released Wake Up, I Miss You. “This is my first opportunity to be to really be blatant about the doubts that I have in myself and my place in the world, and maybe the doubts I have about certain people in my life.”

Victorino says that there are days when he has doubts about making music, and at times he can’t decide whether he wants to play with live

instruments or use a computer to program beats. “Music is such a weird thing for me,” he says. “But it’s something that I feel I need to keep doing.”

Yet Victorino is much more than a pensive and brooding artist wracked by doubt. He is also an explosive performer with the ability to control a room with his voice and his magnetic stage presence—and when he’s not second-guessing himself, he can be brimming with confidence.

“Right off the bat I felt really comfortable and felt like this is what I should be doing for this particular project,” he says of taking the stage at PopScene on Sept. 2.

“It was just me. It was the first time I’ve ever done that—been on stage by myself. And it was cool.”

For the very first time, Victorino explains, he had no one else to let down—no band member or musical collaborator—and that feeling, he says, has been freeing.

“For the first time in my life, I

don’t give a fuck if anybody likes this album,” the singer says of Wake Up, I Miss You. “I’ve never had that feeling before.”

Listening to Victorino’s new material, one gets the sense he is telling the truth. It’s clear that the songs on Wake Up are coming from a very personal place.

“Well at least I’ve had a woman,” he sings in a low, trembling, almostwhisper on “Prophecy.” “Well at least I’ve had someone. Well at least I’ve had a moment in the sun.”

If there is a theme that unifies the music itself on Wake Up it is simplicity. “Prophecy” plods along over a minimalist keyboard arpeggio and a spare kick and snare drum machine beat.

As he tells it, some of the songs on this record were laid down using his smartphone. At first, Victorino says, he intended that the clips would merely serve as demos, but now he says he likes the bare-bones feel of some of these takes so much he is sure some of them will end up making the final cut—even if it isn’t anywhere near as polished as much of what he did with Strata and The Limousines.

“I don’t care if this is looked at as a collection of demos,” he says, explaining that his choice to go with rawer takes is related to his decision to perform under his given name.

“I’ve never really realized what naming a project does, aside from the obvious—it’s kind of a marketing tool,” he says, cracking wise about a certain well-known New York death metal act: “As a listener, you have a good idea that ‘Cannibal Corpse’ is going to sound a certain kind of way.”

Ultimately, he says, performing and recording as Eric Victorino means he can be as true to himself as possible.

“It’s the one thing I won’t change,” he says of the words printed on his birth certificate. “I’m not going to get tired of my own name, I don’t think.

I hope not.”

Victorino opens for Shonen Knife at The Ritz during October’s C2SV music and technology festival.

Unterberger plans to trace Bowie’s development from his breakout late-’60s hit, “Space Oddity,” to his early-’80s dance track, “Let’s Dance.”

Unterberger has written books on artists like The Beatles, The Who and The Velvet Underground. His presentations often include rare video clips and trivia nuggets, like how “Space Oddity” partially owes its success to the BBC, which used the song as a musical motif for stories on the space race—an ironic choice considering Major Tom’s fate Unterberger will focus mostly on Bowie’s bouncing from a hippie singersongwriter; to the glam rock megastar Ziggy Stardust; to the druggy, Aryan, “plastic soul-playing” Thin White Duke; to an androgynous pop icon. Unterberger, who lives in San Francisco, says Bowie’s durability was in large part a product of his versatility.

“I think his biggest legacy will be his experimentation,” he says. “He did it with really memorable songs that you can hum. It’s amazing how many songs are widely known of his that people can sing along really easily, and from very different eras.”

Some of Bowie’s harsher critics dismissed his many characters as a gimmick—complaining that they never knew who Bowie really was. But Unterberger sees it differently. Bowie’s genre-hopping and chameleonic image eventually comprised a singular persona: a man that needed multiple masks to fully express himself. —John Flynn

HIS SUNDAY, the second annual Viva CalleSJ will successfully shut down six miles of San Jose streets, closing them off to automobile traffic for a free, open-streets adventure of the highest order. This is not a race, a protest or a riot.

The goal is to create a temporary autonomous zone where anyone can ride bicycles, walk, skate, scamper,

saunter, play music, do yoga, sell art, dance, or explore the urban fabric however they want.

Most creative or curious people understand that the least interesting way to experience San Jose is from a car, so Viva CalleSJ is a fantastic idea.

It’s an event that opens up the streets for everyone to trip around, at their own pace and leisure, and become one with the streets, experiencing pieces of San Jose or businesses they might never see otherwise. Viva CalleSJ brings normally disparate parts of the city together, helping to alleviate the soul-crushing alienation and apathetic sloth caused by decades of suburban sprawl, albeit for a few hours.

Several city departments, private sector groups, and philanthropic organizations all spent much time, effort and/or funds to pull the whole thing together. Angel Rios, director of the city’s Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services, says his department’s focus for the future is not limited to providing parks, community centers and trails. A larger issue prevails here, that of connecting people to people, and San Jose neighborhoods to other San Jose neighborhoods. Viva CalleSJ falls right into such a master plan.

“It’s an opportunity to take some time off, open up some streets and do something nontraditional, and remove some of the barriers that exist, that keep us from looking at our city,” Rios told me. “There’s a lot of barriers that keep our neighborhoods separate. What Viva CalleSJ does is

remove those barriers and lets people recreate on their terms, and have fun the way they want to have fun.”

In the process, people from different areas of the city, as well as different parts of the social and economic spectrums, can meet each other. In fact, during last year’s debut Viva CalleSJ, many attendees said things along these lines: “I’ve lived in San Jose for years and never even knew this neighborhood was here.” The isolation that suburban car-culture sprawl instills in people is profound. Viva CalleSJ breaks that spell just for a few glorious hours, resulting in thousands of citizens discovering their city in a brand new light. The word ‘recreate’ becomes ‘recreate.’ And that’s what life is all about.

But this is not an extremist political stunt forced down everyone’s throat by anti-automobile activists. Nor is it anything like a “road diet” that NIMBYs incessantly bicker about for months on end. Rather, it’s a community-centric event inspired by similar open streets initiatives in Guadalajara, Bogota and other cities around the world. The name combines the Spanish viva calles, which can mean either “the streets live,” or, “long live the streets,” or both. The interpretation is yours, like poetry. For some, there’s also a French aspect to the experience, at least if you know the word flâneur, basically, a romanticized wanderer of sorts, an artist-poet who simply strolls around, observing the populace from a detached perspective.

Viva CalleSJ offers a different route each year, and this year’s expedition is even better than last year’s: “From the West: Glen Meets Zen” will bring participants through Willow Glen, Burbank, downtown and behind the Shark Tank, on through to Japantown.

Or you can go the other direction.

There’s no beginning or end. You can start anywhere and go as far as you want. That’s the whole idea. As part of the process, some of San Jose’s most iconic neighborhoods and their business associations will each supply their own respective parties in the streets, involving barbecue, sushi, yoga, bike safety lessons or tours of neon signage along San Carlos. One can’t think of a better way to promote San Jose to its own residents, or even to non-locals, than Viva CalleSJ. “It’s about connecting people to people, and people to San Jose,” Rios said. “It’s as simple and organic as that.”

ERE IN AMERICA, the culinary boundaries between cultures tend to smear. As chefs mingle, borrow techniques and substitute ingredients, dishes get compromised for convenience, necessity and/or greater flavor, creating everything from spaghetti and meatballs to the Crunchwrap Supreme. These creations fuse together flavors into edible inventions that are the closest thing America has to a national cuisine.

Santa Clara’s appropriately named Blurr Kitchen serves a thoroughly criss-crossed variety of South East Asian food, exemplified by their chicken wings ($6). Served on a metal tray and doused in a habanero chili glaze, the poultry appendages get battered, then deep fried, giving them a crackly, pebbled crust—different from the blistered skin of wok-cooked varieties.

Contrary to the traditional little rice-paper wrapped logs, their summer rolls ($6) came sliced into six squat cylinders, a sushi-esque presentation that showcased the compartmentalized interior of bright pink shrimp, savory pork, rice noodles and fresh herbs like basil and cilantro. The light appetizer came with a frosting-thick peanut sauce enriched by hoisin.

I then ordered a Banh Mi ($7) with the traditional Vietnamese pork sausage, cha. The pliant slices of meat had hints of garlic and fish sauce and a texture that landed between ham and bologna. Served on a crisp baguette, the sandwich also had spicy aioli, cucumbers, jalapenos, onions and pickled strips of daikon and carrot.

The mingling of salty, savory, sweet, spicy, crunchy and soft added further evidence to my theory that the Banh Mi is the most complete sensory experience a sandwich can provide. Also on the tray, there was a bed of steak-cut fries that were crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside and dressed with fresh garlic.

Finally, the main courses came with vegetables and fried rice or buttery chow-mein noodles. Their eggplant had been slow-cooked in a sheet pan with a garlic and sweet sesame sauce. And their green beans were sauteed with garlic and oil until al-dente—which was all they needed.

The beef ($11) came in sweet, thin strips grilled with jalapeno rounds and garlic cloves. And their catfish ($12) was seasoned with thai chilis, soy sauce, garlic, black pepper and a pinch of sugar. AMES BOND often drank a martini known as The Vesper.

That knowledge alone can help you fit in with the hipster vibe at the Campbell bar named after the cocktail.

A hodgepodge of used chairs and furniture are squeezed into the layout of the ground floor. It’s a bit of a tight fit and they seem to have no problem finding occupants for these seats on a Friday night. Upstairs is an even more eclectic mix of brightly colored crushed velvet and floral patterned sofas.

These elements—along with paintings scattered about—made me feel as if I was in Gatsby’s library and his grandmother used it to store her old couches. At the end I left thinking that it’s weird, but it works.

The odd décor creates niches for a diverse range of patrons. From our seat on the top floor, we could watch bartenders mixing up magic in the form of $10 cocktails like the Setting Sun with jalapeno infused El Chorro tequila, pineapple and Angostura bitters. For non-alcoholic drinks, a category ignored by too many bars, Vesper offers two mocktails, colas, ginger beer and housemade sodas. I was impressed with the Josie mocktail ($5), which took just as much attention to make as a cocktail.

It had house made orgeat (almond based syrup), pineapple and lime juices, and a basil garnish. The taste was fruity and sour with the orgeat providing a white oily sheen from the almonds.

Expect nothing less than a tasty menu when the restaurateur is Jim Stump, of The Table fame. The deviled eggs ($4) with speck (a type of prosciutto) have a strong but nice mustard flavor in the creamy blended yolk. The three halves make a great appetizer. Served in a petite cast iron cocotte, the escargot ($9) in hot garlic herb butter paired with warm bread is a surprisingly exotic treat for an American bar. The tender mollusk mostly absorbed the flavor of the garlic herb butter and has a bit more bite than an oyster would.

For heartier fare, the summer menu ranged from three fancy grilled cheese sandwiches to a poke bowl. At least they stick to their eclectic theme with an equally assorted menu. Nola style barbecued shrimp ($15) with yellow grits featured three excellently executed and seasoned large prawns. The braised short ribs ($20) with cauliflower puree, pea tendrils and pickled purple cauliflower must have taken hours to cook. There were no bones and each generous portion of meat was fork tender and juicy.

I had misgivings about The Vesper upon entrance, but if the food and drinks all hit the right notes, hipster décor can attract any walk of life.
