Field Roast The South Bay Labor Council’s once formidable political machine has seen better days, with the implosion of the CAMPOS siblings, MIKE HONDA’s impending downfall and ASH KALRA’s distant second showing in the District 27 Assembly race. There’s always the next generation of political stars to groom. Competently managing the endorsement processes is another matter, however. Earlier this month, SBLC political director DAVID URHAUSEN sent an email to Palo Alto They City Council candidate Did DANIELLE MARTELL, What? inviting her to take part in SEND TIPS TO the SBLC’s endorsement FLY@ interviews on Aug. 11. The METRONEWS. email not only misspelled COM Martell’s name but also referred to her as a man.

It was a silly blunder for an organization that claims to be the “most sophisticated” political campaign operation in the South Bay. Martell, who last ran an aggressive and comically phallic council campaign in 2005, responded with corrections while also noting that the timing of the interviews seemed odd since the deadline to file for Palo Alto’s four open seats won’t fall until nearly a week later. Martell argued that holding off on the interviews would be the “fair thing to do,” as she is the only one of 11 expected candidates to file paperwork. Urhausen explained that the SBLC already knows the “serious candidates” expected to run—more or less admitting the interviews are a formality— before blaming the Palo Alto City Clerk’s office for providing a misspelled name. Fly spoke with the clerk’s office, which has known Martell for quite some time, and they said that Urhausen was provided the correct spelling. Unimpressed with the games being played, Martell politely called Urhausen out on his lie and CCed labor council CEO BEN FIELD. Proving that SBLC leadership works as well as trickle-down economics, Field replied to both Urhausen and Martell with a one-word response: “Nutty.” Martell forwarded the email to AFL-CIO’s national headquarters, asking: “Is this the image you wish for the AFL-CIO to project?”

NorCal timber conflicts boil over, environmentalists wait for relief

A

FTER AN ERA of relative quiet compared to the so-called timber wars of the 1980s and ’90s, conflict over logging in the forests of Northern California has returned.

A plan to log 100- to 150-year-old redwood trees across 320 acres of northwestern Sonoma County has generated fervent opposition from environmentalists and local residents over the past year. Clear-cutting of 5,760 fire-impacted acres in the Klamath National Forest kicked off in April, much of it on land previously designated as endangered species habitat.

The indigenous people of the area, the Karuk tribe, worked with local environmentalists to craft an alternative plan, but the Forest Service largely ignored it. The Karuk and the environmental groups have filed a lawsuit in an attempt to scuttle the logging. Last month, Karuk tribal members and local activists blocked the road leading to the logging in an effort to slow the logging operations pending a legal judgment that could come as soon as late August.

During the last period of conflict 30 years ago, regional environmentalists curtailed some logging operations by setting aside talismanic stands of old-growth redwood trees in parks and preserves, and by pointing out that forests provide important habitat to numerous species, many of them

endangered, including northern spotted owls, marbled murrelets and coho salmon.

California is home to some of the most prodigious forests on earth, but the state’s lumber production has steadily declined since the 1950s. A similar trend also occurred in other western states. But now logging companies are coming back to pick over what remains.

“Companies have come in and gotten up to a 16 percent return per year on their timberland, but the forests are only physically capable of yielding about 1 percent per year over the long run,” says Richard Wilson, the former California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire), which regulates timber harvests on the state’s private lands.

As a result, soil that once grew trees in the forest has washed into streams and chokes vital fish habitat.

Even so, timber remains a major industry in California, particularly in northern counties like Humboldt, Shasta, Siskiyou and Mendocino, which account for about half the state’s timber harvest. Roughly 20 percent of that harvest currently occurs on public lands.

In some cases, this logging involves cutting old trees that survived the liquidation logging of previous eras.

Most often, though, contemporary lumbering means harvesting from lands scarred by past operations, thus eliciting messy disputes.

During Wilson’s tenure at Cal Fire (1991-1999), he sought to address the problem of over-harvesting by requiring that timber companies file 100-year management plans for sustaining the volume of timber in their forests, called “sustained yield plans.”

But the industry has used its political clout to undermine these regulations, he says, so much so that a large proportion of the state’s remaining timberlands continue to be degraded by companies like Sierra Pacific Industries, California’s largest timber company, which owns 1.8 million acres and relies heavily on clear-cutting.

“We’ve got the rules,” Wilson says.

“It’s a question of enforcing them.”

These sorts of struggles are playing out across Northern California and will shape the long-term well-being of rural economies, the health of local ecosystems and the well-being of indigenous cultures.

Northern California’s forests make up the southern leg of the conifer-rich “Pacific temperate rainforest,” which extends from Prince William Sound in Alaska to California’s Central Coast.

These forests contain the largest mass of living and decaying material of any ecosystem in the world on a perunit basis, prompting many scientists and environmentalists to view their maintenance and restoration as crucial in the fight against global climate change.

Crown Jewel The Marble Mountains are among the ecological jewels of Northern California’s national forest system

and home to numerous old-growth conifer stands. In the 1990s, the U.S. Forest Service set aside many mature forest habitats as reserves for the benefit of old-growth-dependent species, such as the northern spotted owl, which is listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. In 2014, a series of wildfires known as the Westside Fire Complex burned across 183,000 acres of the broader region, most of it in the Klamath National Forest. In response, the Forest Service has designed timber sales that include more than 5,700 acres of clear-cuts, including firekilled and living trees, many of them occurring in the mature forest reserves or on steep slopes above streams federally designated to promote the long-term survival of coho salmon.

The Forest Service often auctions off fire-impacted lands to timber companies for “salvage logging.” The Westside Plan is the largest post-fire timber sale in the recent history of northwestern California.

Klamath National Forest supervisor Patricia Grantham says that the standing dead trees in the forest pose a major long-term fire hazard. By aggressively logging these areas of the forest, her agency is supplying logs to local mills and biomass power plants, contributing to the long-term health of the forest and protecting local residents’ safety.

“When fire returns to the area in the future, it will be smaller and less severe because of the actions we’re taking on the landscape today,” Grantham says.

But environmentalists and tribal members regard the Westside Plan as a giveaway to the timber industry of historic proportions.

“The Westside [Plan] is absolutely the worst project I’ve ever seen in Pacific Northwest national forests,” says Kimberly Baker, of the Arcatabased Environmental Protection Information Center (EPIC). She has been monitoring timber sales on national forests for the past 18 years.

The Karuk tribe, EPIC and three other environmental groups have filed suit in federal court to challenge the project. Logging began in April, and it is unclear how much of the land will remain intact when the judge reaches a verdict. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has also

expressed skepticism regarding the Forest Service’s proposal, noting that dead trees “greatly improve” the quality of habitat for spotted owls and other creatures as the forest naturally recovers over time.

According to Fish and Wildlife’s estimate, the Westside Plan could lead to the deaths of 103 northern spotted owls—at least 1 percent of the species’ entire population.

Many of the slopes where the logging is occurring are among the most unstable in the Klamath National Forest. They also happen to be right above several of the Klamath’s most important salmonbearing streams. By removing anchoring vegetation and carving a spider-web pattern of roads and log landings, the logging threatens to bury the streams with silt.

The Karuk tribe worked with environmental groups to develop an alternative plan that would rely on prescribed fires to regenerate the land over the long run. Logging would be confined to ridgelines, for the purpose of developing fuel breaks, such that some logs would still feed local mills. Much of the Klamath Forest is the Karuk’s aboriginal territory.

The Forest Service’s Grantham says she incorporated most of the Karuk’s input, but Karuk tribe natural resources adviser Craig Tucker says that simply isn’t true. “In reality, the Forest Service basically told us we can go pound sand,” he says, regarding the agency’s response to the Karuk management plan.

According to public records, the Forest Service has spent approximately $24 million developing the Westside logging plan and is auctioning most of the logs for a paltry $2.50 per truckload, thus generating only about $450,000 in revenue for the agency.

“The Karuk tribe’s been here for at least 10,000 years,” Tucker says. “The Forest Service has been here for about a hundred. Yet they don’t listen.”

Wilson, the former Cal Fire chief, says that battles between environmentalists and timber companies will continue until the law limits harvesting practices to sustainable levels that balance the needs of local residents and other species.

“Most of the public doesn’t realize we still have a long way to go to get to sustainability,” he says.

Poll: Silicon Valley Voters Prefer Clinton in Landslide

BY MELISSA HARTMAN With the November presidential election approaching, Silicon Valley’s most likely voters are overwhelmingly in favor of electing Hillary Clinton, according to a new poll.

Late last month, the Silicon Valley Leadership Group (SVLG) conducted a poll of 1,200 people expected to vote and tossed in a question about who they were likely to support for president. The poll concluded July 28, the same day the Democratic National Convention ended.

Clinton, the Democratic nominee, secured 58 percent of the votes, while Republican nominee Donald Trump secured just 21 percent. Fifteen percent voted neither or other, and 6 percent voted no opinion. Eightyone percent of Democrats said they supported Clinton, a paltry 5 percent for Trump, 9 percent for neither or other and 4 percent for no opinion.

Trump failed to secure 46 percent of his own party members in the Silicon Valley poll, with 18 percent selecting Clinton, 22 percent selecting neither or other and 6 percent selecting no opinion.

Silicon Valley’s independents are also on Clinton’s side, according to the poll, which had a reported a margin of error of 2.8 percent. Fifty-two percent said they were going with Clinton to 21 percent for Trump; 17 percent polled for neither or other and 10 percent had no opinion.

Opposition to Trump and his extremist policies have been welldocumented in the South Bay. On June 2, a Trump rally at the San Jose Convention Center turned violent as protesters clashed with Trump supporters.

David Packard, co-founder of Hewlett Packard, created the SVLG, which counts

many of the region’s top employers and tech companies amongst its members.

The organization, led by CEO Carl Guardino, works with government officials on policy issues such as immigration reform, transportation, economic initiatives and public health.

SVLG’s 2015 policy priorities focused on clean energy, which aligns with some of Clinton’s top platforms. Clinton has promised on her website to defend, implement and extend smart pollution and efficiency standards. Meanwhile, Trump has vowed to revitalize mines and drilling on federal lands.

The day after the poll concluded, SVLG applauded Clinton’s Initiative on Technology & Innovation, which focuses on “diversifying the STEM pipeline, increasing fundamental research funding, improving national digital infrastructure and strengthening cyber security.”

No End in Sight For County Courts Strike Santa Clara County court clerks demanding higher pay continued their strike into day five on Tuesday, forcing South Bay courthouses to suspend all but essential services.

Hundreds of clerks camped outside the Hall of Justice on Hedding Street in San Jose hoisting signs that read, “Shame on the judges for allowing this to happen,” and “No raise in eight years, no justice.”

The walkout marks the court’s first strike in 14 years, according to workers, who say they’ve gone eight years without a raise. Union reps estimated that about three-quarters of the 383 members took part in the protest, which kicked off on Aug. 3 after negotiators reached an impasse.

“We’re sorry that we’re hurting the public,” said 36-year court clerk Ingrid Stewart, president of the Superior Court Professional Employees Association. “But we’re dealing with a 30 to 50 percent vacancy rate, cuts to service and money being spent on new buildings instead of the people who keep the courts in operation.”

Stewart added that the courts gambled with public money by building a $208 million Family Justice Center in downtown San Jose instead of investing in workers who struggle to afford living in Silicon Valley. To drive the point home, union lobbyists set up a craps table outside the courthouse Monday morning.

In 2015, the union declined a 4.5 percent wage raise spread out over two years. This summer, the offer ticked up to a 5 percent pay increase for 88 percent of workers with at least six years in the court’s employ.

Last week, employees turned that down, too, because they want to see raises extended to future years to account for increases in cost of living.

Stewart said employees want a second-year raise of 3 percent. “We’re on our fifth day out here,” she said.

Let’s Go Crazy Augmented reality game’s unprecedented popularity creates a gotta-catch-’em-all-22

BY JENNIFER WADSWORTH BATTLE TESTED Gilroy resident Chris Perguidi says he was attacked by two strangers while playing Pokémon Go in downtown San Jose.

T

HROUGH THE LOOKING glass of his smartphone, Chris Perguidi spied an imaginary monster.

He pointed his phone at the purple and googly-eyed Tangela, a vine-tangled critter that lurked just beyond his reach in the digital realm of Pokémon Go.

The 31-year-old Gilroy-based comic book artist had taken the bus from

South County to San Jose to bring his girlfriend lunch, as usual, and hunt for Pokémon along the way. As he turned the corner from South First to San Carlos, he says, a sun-weathered man and bottle-blonde woman across the street began shouting at him to stop recording them.

“I’m not,” he recalls telling them that late afternoon July 27. “I’m playing Pokémon Go. It’s a video game.”

Perguidi kept walking toward the Tech Shop, hoping to dispel their

anger by minding his own business.

But the couple followed, he says. The woman, still yelling, jaywalked to his side of the street and hurled a water bottle at his head.

Angry, yet still trying to defuse the situation, Perguidi says he turned to leave. But the man—a head-shaven, tatted-up, ropy-armed roustabout— grabbed his shoulder, spun him around and swiped at him with a knife.

Perguidi, a trained boxer and wrestler, says the adrenaline triggered his fighter’s

instinct. He slapped the blade out of the bald man’s hand as the woman scratched, bit and pummeled his back. The bald man, furtively re-armed with a knife, cocked a closed fist in what looked like a punch that swung in a leftward arc just as Perguidi tucked his chin.

Dangerous Game For all the horror stories this past month, however, it would be unfair to call Pokémon Go—the wildly popular offshoot of the 21-yearold anime franchise—a death trap.

Perguidi, who plans to keep playing despite his near-death scrape, will be the first to say as much. Marika Krause, spokeswoman for San Jose’s Tech Museum of Innovation, says she was thrilled to find out that people flocked to a space just outside the downtown institution to stalk pretend “pocket monsters,” or Pokémon. In her view, the game arrived at an auspicious time.

“By using augmented reality, the game makes it look like Pokémon are right in front of you,” Tech Museum spokeswoman Marika Krause says.

“That’s exciting for us because we’re working on bringing an augmented reality exhibit in the coming year or so. It gets people acquainted with the technology, which is great because our whole mission is about technology as a way to better humanity.”

San Jose has played host to augmented-reality gamers before.

A few years before Pokémon Go, the game’s developer, Niantic Labs, launched a massively multiplayer smartphone game called Ingress, whose virtual adventures required players to get off the couch and hoof it to local landmarks. In 2013, Ingress players flocked to the Martin Luther King Jr. Library and City Hall to wage battle in an overlapping alternate reality.

“The Pokémon Go players aren’t the first to encounter augmented reality at City Hall, but I’m glad we’re hip enough to attract our fair share of Squirtles, Venemoths and Rhydons,” Mayor Sam

Liccardo says, referring to turtle, moth and rhinoceros Pokémon, respectively.

Like Ingress, Pokémon Go uses geolocation to track players as they move about on a cyber-scavenger hunt for imaginary creatures to catch and train for battle. Google Maps transforms physical locations into a virtual playing field, with “PokéStops” allowing users to buy in-game goodies such as crittercatching red-and-white orbs called Poké Balls or duke it out with other players at Pokémon Gyms.

Also like Ingress, Pokémon Go uses phone cameras to superimpose game elements over a real-world backdrop. Prompts on the map turn public parks, museums, churches, cemeteries, sidewalks and university campuses into terrestrial hunting grounds for digital prey, which range in rarity. The sparrow-like Pidgey and purple rodent Rattata seem to appear around every corner while the reptilian Dratini is considered a prized conquest.

Time and topography matter, too.

Aquatic Pokémon like Horsea and Goldeen linger by bodies of water, including the Guadalupe River. Ghostly Pokémon, like Gastly and Gengar, emerge after nightfall at downtown San Jose’s César Chavez Park, to name one of many local haunts. When I installed the app Sunday, I found a Bulbasaur, a mini dinosaur with a bulbous poison plant affixed to its back, creeping around my bedroom. After a few clumsy attempts to catch it with my Poké Ball, he became the first (and probably last) addition to my collection, called a Pokédex.

This fictional domain has clashed with reality in a host of bizarre, amusing and occasionally horrifying ways. The sudden appearance of people roaming around with their phones held before them like a digital dowsing rod initially drew puzzled or derisive looks. Shortly after the game launched the first week of July, groups of people began exploring places they would never otherwise go and often at odd hours.

Before playing, a warning screen cautions users against playing the game in dangerous areas.

“At first we worried about people’s safety,” says Stacey Hendler-Ross, spokeswoman for the Santa Clara County Valley Transportation Authority (VTA). “We didn’t want people falling off platforms or wandering onto the train tracks.”

Perguidi’s face, which had been sliced into what looked like a second mouth. Had he kept his head up, he says, the blade would have slashed his throat. The knife tore through his American flag tank top and sternum.

Police came, the attackers bolted and an ambulance rushed Perguidi to the hospital, where a doctor sutured his chin gash with 15 stitches.

Perguidi says he wasn’t engrossed to distraction by the game. But the attack became the latest cautionary tale about the physical dangers of the latest fad keeping people glued to their phones.

POKÉ PATRONS Sarah Dragovich, spokeswoman for the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art, has had several Pokémon sightings at the SoFA gallery.

The San Jose Police Department, which already grapples with cellphonewielding motorists and pedestrians enthralled by their tiny pocket computers, began offering Pokémon Go-related safety presentations at local grade schools. It also circulated a U.S. Department of Justice flier that warned of the app’s potential to intensify problems of distracted driving and walking, or children getting lost.

“Technological change also provides criminals with new ways to commit traditional crimes,” the notice cautioned. “[Namely] kidnapping, assault, sexual assault and armed robbery.”

This past weekend, someone fatally shot a 20-year-old college student from San Mateo who was playing the game at a park in San Francisco.

Preceding weeks saw more than a few players stumble upon dead bodies in their quest for new pocket-monsters.

Two brothers in Washington found a .32 Magnum handgun. Ne’er-dowells have dropped digital Pokémon lures to isolate players and rob them.

A budding Pokémon trainer in New York state inspired the no-duh hashtag #DontPokemonAndDrive when he ploughed his brother’s car into a tree in pursuit of a plesiosaurlike Lapras.

“Trying to catch a Pokémon while behind the wheel is a major distraction and increases your risk of causing a crash,” the American Automobile Association warned in a press release that would have seemed laughably

Art Walk Exploring the lush, labyrinthine grounds of the Rosicrucian Museum has become an after-work ritual for Julie Scott, the museum’s executive director of 16 years. After Pokémon Go’s debut last month, she noticed an influx of visitors enjoying the Rose Garden property guided by their smartphones.

“At first we were like, ‘Wait, what is going on?’” Scott says. “It was very noticeable because it looked like a parade of people walking around in search of something. But they were engaging with each other, and were all so congenial, coming through at all times of day and in the evening.

We were so intrigued.”

last week, she says, a girl who must have been about seven years old and knew everything about Pokémon, brought her dad to the park.

“He says, ‘We had no idea you had this labyrinth here,’” Scott says. “We see a lot of that. People come here for a rare Pokémon, but fall in love with the place.”

For businesses or public spaces that depend on walk-in visitors, the sudden surge in foot traffic of gamers trying to fulfill the Pokémon trainer’s edict to “catch ‘em all” has been a welcome trend. Santa Clara County’s animal shelter invited people to snatch up Pokémon during a recent push to adopt flesh-and-blood animals. South Bay libraries, which have a longstanding history of programmatically reflecting community interests, have hosted Pokémon-themed craft times, reading challenges and contests.

“We lucked out,” says Allison Lew, a librarian for the Santa Clara County Library District. “Every one of our libraries has a PokéStop.

We’re really celebrating that, not only to lure people in but also that we saw so many folks enjoying our libraries. It’s a neat thing that the community is enjoying, and we’re enjoying it with them.”

inconceivable before Pokémon Go. California Attorney General Kamala Harris issued her own reminder to stay alert. “If possible, only go to a PokéStop with a friend or partner,” she wrote.

Collaborative apps have for some time influenced the human landscape, but, as evidenced by Pokémon Go, they’re increasingly inserting themselves into the physical world.

Waze, an app that alerts drivers to speed traps and traffic jams, reroutes cars to disrupt formerly quiet neighborhoods. Airbnb turns homes into waystations for travelers, bringing tourists into residential enclaves.

PokéStops have similarly drawn stampedes of players to not only notable landmarks, but also random and, occasionally, inappropriate places. Niantic somehow marked the Holocaust museum in Washington, D.C., as a PokéStop, which drew hordes of players to a memorial for victims of Nazi genocide. On July 29, a New Jersey man filed a lawsuit in California federal court against Niantic and Nintendo for leading strangers to trespass by making his yard a hotspot for mythical mini monsters. San Jose’s Oak Hill Memorial Park and other cemeteries have had to shoo away players for invading what families of those buried there consider a sacred space.

Once VTA addressed safety concerns along light rail and bus stops, the agency’s marketing team incorporated the game into its “Car-free is carefree” summer campaign. The agency posted blogs about Pokémon sightings and created in-game lures to attract Pokémon to certain stations. “We realized that this could actually help build ridership,” Hendler-Ross says.

“We want people playing the game to ride the train or take the bus. And while they’re at it, we want to make sure that they’re safe.”

San Jose’s Institute for Contemporary Art (ICA), a small gallery at the southern edge of the SoFA art district, welcomes Pokémon Go players. “The game provides several unexpected and fun surprise encounters, and offers an opportunity for folks to meander into new community spaces,” ICA curator Patricia Cariño says. “I’m interested in seeing how this technology could be leveraged by art spaces to provide a different level of interaction with art and the spaces themselves.”

The ICA’s three PokéStops, placed there without a heads-up from Niantic, has led to sightings of Mankey and Golduck. Thankfully, Cariño says, many visitors who came for the hunt lingered to enjoy the summer exhibitions exploring paper as art.

“We’ve had a very pleasant experience with the game,” adds Sarah Dragovich, spokeswoman for the modern art nonprofit. “There are actually quite a few Pokémon in our gallery, and we’ve

Jigglypuff, a round cotton candy-pink Pokémon that disarms prey with its big blue eyes, has taken a liking to an installment by artist Weston Teruya.

The saucer-eyed Kirby doppelganger often materializes on Teruya’s recycled paper sculpture of a gate called “Extracting Gold in New York City.”

“People walk right up to the gate and grab it,” says Dragovich, who snapped a screenshot of herself posing by a Rattata, another gallery regular.

“It looks like it’s made of steel, but it’s actually made out of paper that the artist found in the trash. So we’ll see people kind of stop in surprise and interact and enjoy the art.”

At last week’s First Friday art walk in downtown San Jose, the ICA paid a buck to set a digital lure for highpoint Pokémon to attract people to a collaborative performance involving an artist, a poet and a robot.

Public Pirates Not a week from its July 6 launch, Pokémon Go garnered more active daily users than Twitter and more than $1.6 million a day of in-app purchases in the United States alone. A month out, the game surpassed $200 million in global revenue. Nintendo, which claims a 33 percent stake in the franchise and had been grappling with declining game sales, saw its stock double in value since the app stormed into the mobile marketplace. Conceived by Stanford University student Ivan Lee in 2011, and cultivated by Niantic Labs into a $3.7 billion phenomenon, Pokémon Go stands to become the most popular video game ever.

By overlaying the physical world with a vast digital dimension, Pokémon Go has added a new class of drifters, pulled into a psychogeographical thrall not by inborn curiosity but by competitive incentive. The game’s design pushes users to notice landmarks they might otherwise drive right past, all to re-up on supplies or battle other trainers.

But the enticing digital interface that encourages people to venture outside and explore their surroundings

Niantic somehow marked the Holocaust museum in Washington, D.C., as a PokéStop, which drew hordes of players to a memorial for victims of Nazi genocide of the marketplace. The public park, the community church, the sprawling college campus, and the open square are all commodified with Pokémon Go’s in-game virtual item economy, which supports a very real, corporate one.”

There’s also an element of erasure in the Pokémon Go universe, which remaps reality based on an abstracted fantasy with no regard for the subjective limitations of the here and now. The imagined world ignores cultural context, which is perhaps why Niantic rendered hallowed ground such as New York City’s 9/11 memorial and Arlington National Cemetery into PokéStops.

At pediatric hospitals, administrators have implored people to resist gaming around sick kids who may want to play but can’t go outside to catch Pokémon. The California Hospital Association urges members to ask Niantic Labs to remove clinical facilities as in-game destinations.

“While the game encourages positive activities such as walking and family togetherness,” the association wrote in an advisory last month, “hospitals are not the place

highlights some very real inequities of race, class and gender. Not everyone gets to move around as safely as others.

While virtual reality has raised concerns about the way it leaves one’s body vulnerable while immersing the mind in a digital fiction, augmented reality actually draws those bodies outside where the dangers range from traffic to theft and violence from other people.

“The premise of Pokémon Go asks me to put my life in danger if I choose to play it as it is intended and with enthusiasm,” Omari Akil wrote in an article titled “Pokémon Go Could be a Death Sentence for a Black Man,” which has since gone viral. “Let’s just go ahead and add Pokémon Go to the extremely long list of things white people can do without fear of being killed.”

A black man exploring places he would otherwise not go, holding his phone ahead of him the way the game requires, could arouse suspicion in residential neighborhoods or provoke police violence, he wrote. A similar problem arises for women, whose mere presence in public spaces exposes them to harassment and abuse.

“One guy followed me for several feet, and as he looked over my shoulder to check if I was looking at Pokémon, I tabbed over to my email and pretended to be looking at that so he would go away,” writer Maddy Myers wrote for Mary Sue, a website that covers the intersection of feminism and geek culture. “He did, but not before making my heart-rate skyrocket so that he would go away. … Pokémon Go has been reminding all of us, instantly, who does and doesn’t feel safe going outside.”

Pokémon Go’s reliance on users’ personal information has aroused suspicion from civil rights groups, which point out that Niantic CEO John Hanke is beset by privacy scandals dating back to his tenure at Google Maps.

Meanwhile, the game raises questions about the ethics of converting public spaces into private profit centers. Video games have existed for more than four decades, but augmented-reality iterations take things a step further.

“By overlaying a game interface onto real-world sites and landmarks, it collapses the distinction between the physical and the virtual,” Alexander Ross, a video game commentator, wrote in a column for Jacobin quarterly.

Sango takes plenty of inspiration from these sounds, while also incorporating his hip-hop sensibilities. Mixing in boom-bap drum loops with the humid pulse of Rio de Janeiro nightlife, he conjures up feverish, sub-equatorial beats hot enough to burn off the dreary clouds so commonly hanging over his Pacific Northwest home. Stirling received praise and gained fans after appearing on America’s Got Talent in 2010 where she was dubbed the “hip-hop violinist.” Her self-titled debut album, composed of 12 original songs, has sold over 300,000 copies in the U.S. and topped the Billboard Dance and Electronic Albums charts.

The Festival Of Globe is bringing some of today’s biggest hip-hop stars, including Fetty Wap and Rick Ross, to the SAP Center for a benefit concert to fight sex crimes.

The San Francisco Shakespeare Festival proves year after year that high-quality theater doesn’t need to be expensive. Currently celebrating its 33rd year, the festival brings SFSF’s company of talented actors to downtown Redwood City where they’ll be performing one of the Bard’s deeper cuts, The Winter’s Tale, a play some historians classify as a comedy but others identify as a romance. In the play, a series of uproarious events are set into motion when King Leontes wrongly accuses his wife, Queen Hermione, of infidelity with his longtime friend King Polixenes. This classic story runs for three weekends in August and is free of charge. (ST)

Jeff Beck and Buddy Guy are easily two of the most influential blues guitarists in the world. Beck emerged from The Yardbirds, which also produced guitar legends Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page. He’s been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice—once as a member of The Yardbirds and once as a solo artist.

As for Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton has been quoted as saying “Buddy Guy is by far and without a doubt the best guitar player alive.” The Chicago blues singer and guitar player has influenced many greats, including Jimi Hendrix and Keith Richards. (ST)

For The Record FREEDOM FIGHTER Ever since her family friend, Adnan Syed, was convicted of murder, author Rabia Chaudry has been working to prove his innocence.

New book, ‘Adnan’s Story’ aims to tell what ‘Serial’ podcast didn’t

ABIA CHAUDRY was at home when the news broke. On June 30, more than 15 years after he was convicted for murdering his high school girlfriend, Judge Martin Welch vacated Adnan Syed’s conviction and granted a new trial.

“It was really tremendous,” Chaudry says, recalling that day in an interview with Metro. “I had a bit of an emotional meltdown.”

That’s because Chaudry has spent the last decade and a half working to exonerate Syed, a family friend,

whom she says was wrongly accused in the death of Hae Min Lee. Chaudry opens her new book, Adnan’s Story: The Search for Truth and Justice After Serial, with a letter to the reader recalling that fateful day and her unwavering commitment to proving Syed’s innocence.

In 2000 Syed was found guilty of Lee’s murder. At the time, the developing case dominated local news in Syed and Lee’s hometown of Baltimore before fading out of the spotlight. The crime, and subsequent investigation, were catapulted into the national spotlight in 2014 when reporter Sarah Koenig made it the focus of her popular podcast, Serial. She will speak about her new book and the experience of being thrust into the limelight at Kepler’s Books next Tuesday,

Koenig was turned on to the story after Chaudry reached out to her.

Chaudry’s hope was that through her reporting, new evidence would arise and shed light on Syed’s innocence.

Although the podcast gained international interest and returned a key witness to the case, it still left out a lot of information, according to Chaudry, who says that Koenig did not pay adequate attention to Lee’s autopsy.

She also claims prosecutors were wrong about cell phone tower data that was used to link Syed to Lee’s killing.

Chaudry was also disappointed at the lack of in-depth reporting Koenig did when it came down to lead detectives Gregory MacGillivray and William Ritz who, Chaudry says, have a history of flawed criminal investigations, which include the mishandling evidence in order to make their theory better fit a case.

“Koenig was very forgiving to the detectives on the case,” she says.

After receiving Syed’s blessing, Chaudry went ahead and started

writing Adnan’s Story. The way Chaudry sees it, her account is more accurate, because “he wasn’t being edited as he was in the podcast,” she says.

Chaudry had no intention to write a book until she realized that if she didn’t do it, someone else would. And sure enough, someone else did. Asia McClain, perhaps Syed’s best alibi—who states she was with him at the library at the time he was allegedly committing the crime—has also released a book.

Chaudry was very supportive and praised McClain for sticking to her story, even after she was, according to Chaudry, misled and attacked by Maryland state prosecutors.

As Chaudry tells it: In 2010, former prosecutor Kevin Urick convinced McClain to stay out of Syed’s appeal because, according to him, all the evidence pointed to Syed as the killer and anything she said would not hold up in court. Urick also allegedly told McClain that the affidavit she wrote confirming she was with Syed at the time of the murder, was forced upon her by Syed’s family.

McClain adamantly denied this claim, saying she never told Urick this and reaffirming she was with Syed.

After 16 years of advocating for Syed, Chaudry still firmly believes he is innocent. All the evidence so publically scrutinized by Koenig, along with the new trial, point to the same answer in Chaudry’s mind: everyone who knew Syed says he was a genuinely nice guy.

“There is not a single act of violence attributed to him,” she says.

However, according to Chaudry, Syed does not want to be judged by his character. Instead, Chaudry says, he wants the evidence to prevail. Jay Wilds, the state’s key witness against Syed, has modified his account of the events surrounding the murder numerous times. And, in another potential game-changer for Syed, new evidence has come to light suggesting that the cell phone tracking information, used by the state to place Syed’s during the time of the murder, is unreliable.

JUST AS THE typewriter replaced the hand-written word, and the word processor sent its mechanical predecessor the way of the dodo, new technology is changing the way visual artists create.

This year marks the fourth annual Mobile Digital Art & Creativity Summit (mDAC). Held at the Palo Alto Art Center, the event, which begins Friday night with an opening party and exhibition, mDAC showcases the emergent field of artwork created entirely on tablets and touchscreen handsets.

Aug, 12-14Free$299 The Mobile Digital Painting Exhibition showcases the work of Palo Alto Art over 70 artists selected from more than 800 submissions, which Center were judged by a panel consisting of the digital artist Jaime Sanjuan and the self-described “creative being,” Ivy Newport.

Each winner received a certificate confirming that they were among the top 100 submissions. In a separate category for Mobile Photo Art, a category that blends the idea of photography with digital manipulation, approximately 30 winners were chosen from over 500 entries. These galleries highlight the limits to which digital creativity can be extended, transforming RGB screen images into CMYK framed prints.

In addition to a free gallery show, a paid two-day summit is included for those who are interested. The paid summit runs from Saturday to Sunday and includes workshops and classes. Chief Google Doodler Matthew Cruickshank will give the keynote speech on Saturday to kick off the proceedings. Following his remarks, a panel discussion will reckon with the impact digital art is having in the realm of fine art. The panel will address issues like iPhoneography, iPad/ mobile painting, art education and app development.

The underlying theme at this year’s mDAC Summit recognizes a recent shift in tech culture: the movement out of the Information Age and into the Experience Age. In other words, you can do more with your hoard of devices besides letting texts, apps and games run your life (looking at you, Pokémon Go-ers).

There’s something aspirational in thinking that provocative, lasting works of art will be produced by the phone in your pocket. Perhaps the disappearance of paint, charcoal and clay—the dirtying of an artist’s hands—is inevitable, like the loss of typewriters for novelists. Stephen Frears’ biopic of a showbusiness legend who deserves her place next to The Shaggs and Ed Wood. Meryl Streep, always better as a comedienne than a tragedian, both sentimentalizes and honors

this deluded woman’s life. Jenkins was an opera singer whose reach truly exceeded her grasp. We open at the Verdi Club in Manhattan in 1944, where the well-off Ms. Jenkins, is entertaining the culture vultures in Manhattan. Her husband St. Clair Bayfield (Hugh Grant), a former actor, massacres a little Hamlet as an entr’acte before his wife and patroness Florence Foster Jenkins

(Streep) assumes the stage. The hefty lady is the center of a playlet about the winged Angel of Inspiration visiting Stephen Foster, to bestow “Oh, Susanna!” upon him. (Happily, this was a real thing—Jenkins’ custom of wearing angel wings on stage came from this kind of recital.) Jenkins is a patron of the conductor Toscanini (Christian McKay) who’d rather look the other way when Florence tries to get practice as a mezzo-soprano. She hires an accompanist, Cosme McMoon (Simon Helberg of The Big Bang Theory, the movie’s real standout); he little realizes he will be playing for a singer who is so cataclysmically off-key. Jenkins’ career soars, greased with the help of her own money. She trades small practice rooms for the largest stages in New York, and her rise is contrasted with McMoon’s terror of being found out. The explosively funny Helberg recalls Eddie Bracken and Gene Wilder. The handsome digitized recreations of midtown NYC are charming. Passages of effective farce emerge—Grant hiding his mistress from an unscheduled visit from his wife, while McMoon, half-dressed and walloped by his first hangover, tries to endure the surprise. But FFJ also contains the kind of farce that doesn’t snap—some labored business of St. Clair trying to hide all the newspapers containing a scathing review of Florence’s singing.

The film suggests that only disease could explain this remarkably strange career. That seems too easy. And the serious turn of Nicholas Martin’s script is, ultimately, payback for the

funny parts. Despite this, and the French-made pastiche of Jenkins’ life, Margaret, released earlier this year, the glorious enigma of Jenkins stands, defiant, ready to be cracked by a defter movie. (Camera 12) (RvB)

A gross parody of Toy Story; one loser drives around with a “Pixar” bumper sticker on the back of his beater car. In a supermarket, a pack of hot dogs can’t wait to get between the vertical lips of the waiting buns, who are virginally saving themselves for the day when they’re purchased. What these happy, pious products don’t know is what actually happens to food when it arrives in a kitchen. Tipped off by a wised-up jar of mustard, Frank the hot dog (Seth Rogen) escapes after a grisly shopping cart crash. He tries to find his lost bun Brenda (Kristen Wiig) amidst the ethnic stereotypes of the international section: these include a lesbian-curious taco (Salma Hayek), and a spitting angry Arab lavash and his frenemy, a put-upon Jewish bagel. The message that religion keeps us blind and sexually trapped is worthy, if not all that fresh. And it’s scantily-villained. A rapacious bottle of douche called, appropriately “Douche” (Nick Kroll) preys on the products around him. But he’s not in on the master-plot, not actively trying to oppose Frank’s efforts to dispel the religious mystification which has kept the groceries doomed to be bought and devoured. Sausage Party is a roundly obscene version of the kind of animated-produce cartoons of the olden days, exemplified by the

In Suicide Squad, a group of supervillains is harnessed by a covert government organization to fight superhuman threats. David Ayer, the talented director of the WWII film Fury, has to mix styles and flavors. As voiced by Arleen Sorkin on Batman: The Animated Series, Harley was a beguiling Brooklyn ditz in a fine toxic Krazy Kat and Ignatz romance.

Who could love The Joker more than himself? In buttfloss rollerskate shorts and a kinderslut outfit complete with bubblegum and pigtails, Robbie wobbles between daft child and supposedly irresistible femme fatale.

The promotional pictures of Jared Leto’s Joker were worth the thousands of words by outraged fans; the steel teeth look like a sixth-grader’s braces.

What’s surprising is that there is some good acting in this rote supermelodrama; the military liaison Rick Flag (the Keith Carradine-like Joel Kinnaman) has an attractive mildness to go with the macho certainty. Similarly authentic is the fire-cholo El Diablo (Jay Hernandez). (Valleywide) (RvB)

JASON BOURNE

Bereft of humor or sex, the Bourne series gives audiences a choice of brands. If James Bond is Fodor’s, Bourne (Matt Damon) is Lonely Planet. The promotional posters for Jason Bourne swipe a vintage Bond tagline from the Timothy Dalton days: “You know his name.” The joke is, Bourne doesn’t seem to know his own name, having given up his identity for this codename. Few movies will cut from “the Greek/Albanian border” to “Reykjavik, Iceland,” and that’s the thrill of espionage movies right there—they give the sense of a globe girdled with spies. The surveillance never stops, with closed-circuit cameras measuring facial metrics worldwide. In such situations, you can always tell the computer operator: “enhance.” The crazily realistic editing makes the finale a cubist fantasy of destruction. Bourne uses a Dodge Charger to mop up the traffic while pursuing a target. Sadly, it’s not as beautifully legible as in the trailers.

We hear a CIA agent claiming “We’re still trying to put together a narrative to explain what happened.” Good luck with that. (Valleywide) (RvB)

Spectral Surf RIDING THE WAVE Seattle surf rock band La Luz bring their latest album—‘Weirdo Shrine,’ recorded with Ty Segall— to The Ritz on Saturday.

After near death experience, La Luz channel dark, beachy vibes

N A NIGHT drive in 2013, Seattle-based surf-rock group La Luz was driving home from a show when their van spun out on some black ice. The van smashed into a divider on the highway. They were safe but rattled. After calling AAA, the four-piece were sitting in the van awaiting a tow when a semi spun out on the same patch of ice and smashed into their waiting vehicle.

There’s a photo of the mangled van on the band’s Tumblr page. It’s a testament to the lengths touring musicians go to live the life that calls to them— risking life and limb for something that many dismiss as a pastime of youth. Music is serious business.

After surviving the crash, La Luz recorded with famed San Francisco psych-rocker Ty Segall. The resulting record, Weirdo Shrine, is a collection steeped in creeping darkness—think Ventures-by-way-of-Sleater-Kinney.

The logic of trauma works through echoes, repeating itself over time in often strange and unexpected rumblings. On many of the tracks, death can be heard, just hanging in the background, nodding along and

waiting for the right moment to enter the frame. Even the album’s cover, a psyched-out image of a cat’s cradle against a black background, seems to evoke the fragility and transience of life. “No damn cat, no damn cradle,” says Newt.

La Luz embrace the whole ’60s surf and psych vibe quite openly on Weirdo Shrine. The music video for “You Disappear” features the group playing on a fake French program (the “Ethnic Cultural Hour”) evoking both the ’60s Yeh-Yeh girl movement, with their patterned pants and blouses, and ’80s VHS experimentation. Analog film duplicates of the girls spin into infinity as green-screened psychedelic shapes twirl behind them. The whole thing feels a bit like a collaboration between Francoise Hardy and Robert Ashley, or New York’s gonzo public access programs like TV Party.

La Luz are one of many signees to Sub Pop’s subsidiary label, Hardly Art, which has been making a case for itself as the next Kill Rock Stars, ever since the onetime label of Elliott Smith moved primarily into releasing comedy albums. With bands like Shannon and the Clams, Chastity Belt, Colleen Green, and the Julie Ruin (Kathleen Hanna’s current group), the label has been on a run of strong releases, and Weirdo Shrine is no exception.

Segall’s decidedly lo-fi production style gives the album a sense of coming from some alternate past, one where the ’60s happened not in lush technicolor, but in the stark and murderous black and white of Fritz Lang’s M. The group’s upcoming tour includes a stop at The Ritz. Joining the band is one of San Jose’s proudest indie rock sons—Will Sprott, formerly front man for local weirdo pop group the Mumlers.

After spending some time in the East Bay, Sprott relocated to the comparatively cheaper Seattle a few years back, where he linked up with the girls in La Luz for a number of creative collaborations.

Sprott’s appearance at the Ritz marks one of the first times the musician has come back to his hometown for a show since embarking on a solo career. The Mumlers were one of the few bands from San Jose in recent years to garner a serious buzz and command a hefty fan base.

Since moving out of the Bay Area, the singer and songwriter released his first solo record, last year’s Vortex Numbers, which found Sprott combining elements of surf rock and country crooning with his earnest and conversational lyrical style. And if the cover art looks reminiscent of La Luz’s Damp Face EP (recently re-released by Hardly Art) there’s a reason for that: it was designed by their singer and primary songwriter, Shana Cleveland.

This South Bay-bred singer possesses a timeless voice. Cooing over brushed drums, jazzy horns and a plodding stand-up bass, her voice flows like molasses and lands on the ear with a velvet touch. On her debut album, Siren Songs, she channels those mythical singing temptresses, putting a fresh twist on classic sounds and drawing the listener in like a doomed sailor.

Though rooted in jazz, she’s branched into the modern realm as well, slowing Rhianna’s “Umbrella” into a dusty ballad and collaborating with electrodisco DJ Captain Supernova.

T’S BURIED DEEP in the heart of every boom-bap beat; it’s churning hot at the center of every rip-roaring rock & roll riff; and it’s slyly creeping in the smoky shadows of every soulful R&B jam. As we argued last week, jazz, and the music from which it sprang— the blues—are the purest American art forms. And they are both rolling into town this weekend with the 27th annual San Jose Jazz Summer Fest.

With so many amazing acts to check out in such little time, it’s unlikely you’ll be able to … um …

catch ’em all. Make the most of your time with this guide of festival picks.

DakhaBrakha Sun, 3pm, California Theatre Stage

Clad in the traditional fur hats of Ukraine, DakhaBrakha seeks to elevate the international recognition of their homeland by blending their folk stylings with nearly every other genre on the planet. On “Karpatsky Rap,” they deploy a twangy mouth harp, a huffing accordion and a dreamy cello riff before Nina Harenetska unleashes a nasty flow in her native tongue. On the other end of the spectrum, they deploy animalistic yips and howls on “Vensa,” and on “Baby,” they lay an infectious pop chorus in the middle of tribal drums and looping chants. They blend the global and the intensely local into a stunning, singular sound.

Aki Kumar Sat, 9pm, Blues Stage

Born in Mumbai, Aki Kumar came to the United States at the age of 18 to study software engineering at San Jose State and maybe play a little harmonica on the side. Three years ago, he quit his day job and began pursuing music fulltime after becoming a regular at blues spots like The Smoking Pig in Fremont.

Following an impressive debut, Kumar crafted a uniquely American record by combining blues with Indian music, two genres dominated by rabid purists.

On Aki Goes to Bollywood—especially on “Eena Meena Deeka”—he zips and bounces through the peppy track like a Hindi-speaking Louis Prima.

John Blues Boyd Sat, 9pm, Blues Stage

Boyd released his fittingly titled debut album, The Real Deal, at the ripe age of 71.

Born in Mississippi, he started working in the cotton fields at the age of 7, then moved onto hot tar roofing, which he did for 35 years. He sang his whole life,

Grammy-winner Aaron Lington ranks among the most important artists in the area. He has played and composed for The San Francisco Symphony, Bo Diddley and the Pacific Mambo Orchestra. He’s been frequently recognized by the readers and critics of Downbeat magazine while also earning “Jazz Educator of the Year” in 2011 from California Music Educators Association for his work at San Jose State and with the San Jose High School All-Stars.

The baritone saxophonist will lead his sextet in a rousing tribute to the essential cuts of Ray Charles, a followup to their spectacular medley in 2013 honoring Stevie Wonder.

John L. Worley Jr. Sun, 3pm, Silicon Valley Stage

A world-class talent, Worley chose to remain a local artist and educate the next generation of performers.

He is a Stanford faculty member, a featured recording artist on over 70 works and a collaborator with artists ranging from Ella Fitzgerald to the Asian American Orchestra. He plays both the trumpet and the flugelhorn with warmth and panache. The past few years, he’s taken a special interest in resurrecting the brilliance of Miles Davis, putting his own stamp on the divine creations of one of jazz’s iconic

Before Chicago and New York, there was New Orleans—the birthplace of jazz music. But unlike the cooler, smokier stylings of those northern cities, the bayou brand of the genre lolls along with a bouncy, brassy vibe, perfectly suited for the parades that march up and down Bourbon Street. Baker leads his band generously, deferring often to his talented accompanying artists before taking his turn and unleashing whimsically executed notes on his cornet, or a bluesy refrain in his soulful voice, or digging into the trove of other instruments he can play, including the trombone, alto sax, guitar, banjo, bass, tuba and drums.

After mastering straight-ahead jazz, MdCL took his compositional sensibilities and applied them on the ones and twos. He honed his skills as a DJ on London’s broken beat scene—a genre that prizes intricate, hiccupping percussion. Now, equal parts jazz, neo-soul and electro, he’s on the speed dial for major artists like Lauryn Hill and Jill Scott. He recently released his 11th studio album, Church, a kickstarter-funded project that returns to his sonic roots, but repackages it in electronic psychedelia. A dizzyingly talented artist, he creates live samples by playing his drum machine and keyboard during his sets, spawning an original mix at each show.

This precocious 23-year-old makes whatever will come after hip-hop. A multi-talented artist, Masego raps, sings, produces and plays saxophone, keyboard and marimba. He combines the raw performing skills of a first-chair phenom, the intricate beatmaking of Flying Lotus and the joyful blend of hard-spitting and tender crooning of fellow youngin’ D.R.A.M. On “Send Yo’ Rita,” he starts out riding a swaying dancehall beat, then staccato raps through erratic snares and bulbous,

Adrian Younge possesses a diverse range of skills—he teaches entertainment law, he scored the blaxploitation send-up Black Dynamite and produced “Untitled 06” with Ali Shaheed Muhammad for Kendrick Lamar. A specialist in the jazzier, funkier side of hip-hop, he produced Twelve Reasons To Die II, a throwback project for Ghostface Killah.

His most recent solo project Something about April II, leans heavily on samples from the early ’70s era of funk. His hip-hop influences and prowess on a multitude of keyboards imbue the soul-drenched project with a caramelsmooth, timeless listenability.

Freddie Joachim Sat, Midnight, Cafe Stritch Stage

This Filipino-born DJ started practicing his craft in the mid-’90s, but has found a way to keep his turntable skills modern.

He specializes in the dusty, soul-sampled boom-bap of yore that’s cut with electro influences and a jazzy sway.

He builds his beats slowly, meditating on meandering horn or piano riffs that give way infectious beat breaks.

Boasting a well-rounded repertoire, he excels equally at producing beats for Joey Bada$$, remixing the hits of others like his subdued drum n’ bass rendition of Razor-N-Tape’s “Outta Sight” and crafting his own tracks, like the loopy and organic “On and On.”

Aireene Espiritu Sat, 9pm, Blues Stage

After immigrating to America as a 10-year-old, Espiritu began distilling the folk music of her adopted nation into a distinct brand of her own. The singer-songwriter plays an evergreen brand of old-timey tunes, strumming melodies on her ukelele or guitar backed by stomping and swaying rhythms. Mixing the vibe of a rural front porch and a gospel church choirstand, she weaves yarns that celebrate the struggle and joy of the dustier regions of America.

She travels the country living out of her Toyota Prius, a rather fitting situation for a modern practitioner of humble tradition.

This actually might make some sense.

After all, conflict is bad, right? Well, not exactly. It turns out that there’s good conflict and there’s bad conflict.

Bad conflict involves the stuff of “ugly arguments”—sneering, mocking, and getting up on moral high ground, just so you can shoulder-check the other person off the edge. Good conflict, on the other hand, involves getting (and giving) healthy pushback—which means being what Nassim Taleb calls “antifragile.”

In Antifragile: Things That Gain From Disorder, risk researcher Taleb, a former derivatives trader, explains that antifragile is “the exact opposite of fragile”—but it goes beyond “resilience or robustness.”

Antifragile describes the way living things are improved by stressors—becoming better, stronger, and more able to cope with difficult, unpredictable stuff that comes their way.

Beyond how being challenged improves you as a person, marriage researcher John Gottman finds that the happiest, most stable relationships are those in which husbands accept “influence” from wives, making wives “far

less likely” to go ugly in disagreements.

This starts with what Gottman calls “deep friendship”—love between two equals with mutual respect, not one person who can’t believe his luck at finding another who, intellectually and emotionally, is basically a zygote with boobs.

Of course, this woman’s silent partner thing may just be a feature of her being 21. Increasingly, 21 is the new, oh, 8-and-a-half. Kids are, as Taleb might say, raised “fragile”—helicopter-parented to encounter as few stressors as possible and then bubble-wrapped off to college for more of the same. Universities, formerly centers of free speech and free inquiry, now have speech codes so nobody gets hurt feelz and have “trigger warnings” about course material.

Still, even these kids have to grow up sometime—which is to say, your girlfriend could begin to have opinions and get a little miffy that you have a heartfelt interest in, um, never, ever hearing them.

Your welcoming opinions and influence from a partner—this woman or a more challenging (but still loving and goodnatured) woman—starts with having humility, which those frail of ego tend to see as a sign of weakness. The truth is, it takes a strong person to admit that he may be wrong and maybe doesn’t know everything in the known universe.

My new boyfriend is sweet, successful, and handsome, and he rocks my world in bed. The problem? I’m 5‘8”, and he’s 5’6”. I’m embarrassed to admit this, but I’m just not that attracted to him when he’s standing up.—Shallow Women like things that are tiny and cute, so it’s been kind of a trend to go around with a little dog poking out of your purse.

Sadly, dressing your itsy-bitsy boyfriend in a sailor shirt and sunglasses and tossing him in your handbag has yet to catch on.

Okay, 5’6” isn’t exactly itsy-bitsy—but it might as well be to you. Your preference for taller men—which biological anthropologist Boguslaw Pawlowski finds 89 percent of women have—didn’t come out of nowhere. Tallness in a man suggests an ability to protect a woman and is associated with social status and access

to resources. It also suggests good genes, because ancestors who weren’t starving to death and riddled with parasites would have had the metabolic resources to put toward growing tall.

People say looks shouldn’t matter— which doesn’t for a moment change the fact that they do. Clearly, shortness is a deal breaker for you. This doesn’t make you “shallow.” It makes you somebody who should stop dating short guys— ideally before you blurt out your true feelings in bed: “Grow, Bradley!…I mean, ‘Oh...Bradley!’”

POT BY NUMBERS Analysis of a new federal report shows how much people use pot in certain cities.

HERE DO PEOPLE like to smoke pot the most? Thanks to government statistics, we have an answer.

In a new report based on data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, the number crunchers at the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration have disaggregated the marijuana-use data, providing a means of getting down to pot-smoking frequency at the local level.

Researchers found that 7.73 percent of Americans age 12 and older reported using marijuana at least once a month. Similar reports based on the data have allowed us to determine the top 10 marijuana-using states, but this time around researchers divided each state into a number of “sub-state” areas. The sub-state regions include some that have high marijuana-use levels but no cities to speak of. They don’t make the list, but places like these deserve honorable mention: Alaska’s North Coast (14.93 percent), Northern California (13.97 percent), southeastern Maine (13.29 percent) and northern New Hampshire (12.40 percent).

The top pot-smoking cities are burning at a rate near twice the national average: SAN FRANCISCO, 15.46 PERCENT A half-century ago, the city was a hotbed of hippies. Now, it’s a high-tech haven, but they still like to burn in Babylon by the Bay. DENVER, 14.84 PERCENT The Mile-High City certainly lives up to its reputation as it basks in the glow of legalized weed and enjoys the benefits of marijuana tourism.

BURLINGTON, VT., 13.87 PERCENT With the highest percentage of tokers east of the Mississippi, this sleepy progressive town has something going for it other than Bernie Sanders.

PORTLAND, ORE., 13.32 PERCENT The City of Roses is developing a reputation as a city that has a real yen for another kind of flower.

BOSTON, 13.12 PERCENT Bostonians are toking up like they’ve already legalized cannabis, but that won’t happen until November.

PROVIDENCE, 12.77 PERCENT Rhode Islanders like their pot. In fact, usage rates are even higher outside Providence proper.

ANCHORAGE, 12.37 PERCENT The Alaska Supreme Court legalized possession in 1979, but prohibitionists managed to undo that a few years later. Cafe Stritch’s annual Rahsaanathon celebration leaves indelible mark

T

HE FOURTH ANNUAL tribute to the late Rahsaan Roland Kirk ignited and united Cafe Stritch last week. Adepts from across the country flew in for the revelry, and Rahsaan’s music once again captured the few hundred combined patrons and freeloading journalists who were lucky enough to witness the masterful repertoire of jazz instrumentation, bluesy overtones and extended techniques for wind and brass.

Forget everything you learned about circular breathing and multiphonics.

These cats were off the charts.

In one sense, though, the ripple effects of Rahsaan’s genius flowered before the gigs even started. Adam Kahan’s documentary, The Case of the Three Sided Dream, screened at Camera 3 and then spilled kittycorner across the parking lot to the upstairs mezzanine of Cafe Stritch for a panel session, both of which deconstructed Rahsaan’s legacy and reinvented history all over again.

The film included a color version of Rahsaan’s notorious 1971 performance on The Ed Sullivan Show with a blistering entourage of geniuses, including Charles Mingus and Archie Shepp. The group was fighting to introduce

more adventurous flavors of jazz to mainstream audiences, since they didn’t really have a place on television. After negotiating with Sullivan’s boys, someone agreed to perform a “safe” number, a blasé dinner-schmaltz reduction of “My Cherie Amour,” a tune Rahsaan had already recorded. In a now famous episode, the band dismissed the agreement and instead slaughtered the viewers with Mingus’ “Haitian Fight Song.” Due to apparently unrelated circumstances, that was the last-ever episode of The Ed Sullivan Show.

The dude on piano for that 1971 gig, Sonelius Smith, played on Sunday at Stritch, in the grand finale, after the three main Rahsaanathon gigs concluded. Smith also showed up to the screening and participated in the panel session. It’s quite a rare occurrence in downtown San Jose to encounter someone who performed on The Ed Sullivan Show. The Gong

Show, maybe. But not Ed Sullivan.

At the panel, Rahsaan’s widow, Dorthaan Kirk, suggested that Rahsaan erred in 1971 by breaking the agreement and playing the more avant-garde music on TV. It didn’t help his cause, she said. He should have just agreed to play what the organizers wanted. Instead, he burned the very bridge he was trying to build. That suggestion sparked a spirited debate on what would have happened if Rahsaan had acquiesced. Would he have been successful at getting jazz, or “black classical music” as he called it, into the mainstream entertainment industry? We’ll never know.

When the primary Rahsaanathon gigs exploded over the next three nights, the legends in the bands showed they have improved with age. Led by a front line of trombonist Steve Turre and two of the wildest horn players anywhere, James Carter and Charles McNeal, the deft ensemble also included Marcus Shelby, Matt Clark and Darrell Green. The octogenarian poet Betty Neals once again reprised her original spoken word component to “Theme for the Eulipions,” as well as words for Rahsaan’s tune, “The Inflated Tear.” Vocalist Terrie Odabi likewise provided a booming set of pipes, adding a bluesy piece to the jazz package.

In fact, the word “jazz” barely even captures the spirit or the music of Rahsaan, because a dude like him simply can’t be captured. He was all over the map, from dixieland to the avant-garde, from traditional to extreme noise terror. A true original, Rahsaan felt equally at home jamming with howling dogs or a talking calculator as he did with saxophones, a trap set or a standup bass player. As a result, sheet metal, conch shells, whistles and piano string manipulation all made their way into a set spanning the entire dynamic range, elegiac and contemplative for one tune, vibrant and rocking for the next. And the band held the intimate crowd’s attention throughout the night.

Pieces of every tune stuck in my head over the weekend. The normal term for such a phenomenon is ‘earworm,’ but in this case they were ‘Rahsaan worms.’ At the end of each night, I felt like a teenager at a punk rock show. I didn’t want to leave until the last person was gone.

Upon his return, Rasuli, 32, worked up a menu with his cousin, and an unassuming red food truck parked next to the Tech Shop in the heart of downtown San Jose was born. Agha’s Gyro Express has been in business since 2014, serving Mediterranean and Middle Eastern fast food Monday through Saturday from 11am to 6pm. The brief but delicious menu has only four items: chicken gyro, lamb gyro, chicken over rice, and lamb over rice. Simplicity, Rasuli believes, is the key to a successful food truck.

“I like to say I took McDonald’s out of business,” he teases, nodding to the shuttered chain bordering the lot where he parks the food truck.

Rasuli believes people are gravitating away from fast food and toward options like his truck, as good food is no longer about bang for the buck (although his portions are generous and priced quite low; gyros are $7 and meat and rice plates are $8). Dishes are made to order, making the food fresher and the process more transparent.

Many Yelpers compare Agha’s Gyro Express to the renowned Halal Guys, which recently set up shop at The Plant. Their brick-and-mortar NYC shops were some of my favorite spots for last-call dinners the past two years. But this isn’t an exaggeration: Agha’s blows Halal Guys out of the water.

Agha’s lamb comes in insanely tender and well-seasoned bites, sprinkled over a bed of long-grain rice. The rice is perhaps a tad greasy, but that helps prevent it from turning into a gooey starch ball. The plate comes with a side salad, dressed in a creamy dill sauce. The whole ensemble is topped with the white sauce characteristic of gyro joints, and red chili sauce is available at shaded tables under a blue pop-up tent. A cooler of bottled water and sodas sits at the ready, and they do offer baklava ($2) for dessert.

People rave about the Halal Guy’s white sauce, but I found it a little too creamy and heavy, its flavor dominating the food. Agha’s is light, almost tart and refreshing. UMMER HAS BEEN a time of reflection and spiritual awakening for Mr. Harada and myself. We enjoyed outings to the desert and visited many watering holes around Joshua Tree (or Josh Tree, as we call it, since we’re pretty tight now). I also took a pilgrimage to the San Jose Civic last month to watch the sacred master perform his teachings. I even got to meet the D’Ali Yankovic. It was joyful, like watching my first child being born, only more meaningful and less gross.

Mr. Harada had an awakening of his own. Any time he does something with a scoach more than minimal vigor, he finds a new calling. This time: billiards. When I paged him 143 as a signal to meet, I had a pretty good idea that the place would have a pool table. Sure enough, when I answered the car phone installed on tricycle basket, he gave me a place: The Place.

I wheeled down South First Street to the iconic San Jose bar and thought back to the days of yore, when laces were fat, skateboard wheels were meager in girth and a band named after a Mexican rice and cinnamon drink ruled the scene. This horrible era was the ’90s.

I marveled at how the area hadn’t changed in the past two and a half decades. Even the most inventive gentrifiers can’t spoil what’s known as “Martha’s Garden.” Kevin’s Place, or “The Place” as many know it, shines like a dagger where Second and First streets converge.

The “martini” logo that hangs above the door was once used by a skateboard brand whose followers annoyed decent people from California to the Baltic coast (as far as I can vouch for). With a tear in my eye, I opened that sacred door to find Mr. Harada already knocking balls around with his stick.

Kevin’s Place calls itself the “longest bar in town,” and it truly is a shotgun shack that serves tasty drinks at affordable prices. Like the neighborhood, not much has changed. Or maybe it has. But if so, not by much. It’s still a tavern with acoustic tile above the pool table to keep noise down. Walls are covered with automotive imagery and nostalgia like an O.J.-signed napkin.
