Outing Media Proud-gay-tech billionaire PETER THIEL has done a lot of fascinating things. He co-founded Paypal, tried to create start-up countries out of floating shipping containers, blamed women’s suffrage for hampering American capitalism and hopes to harness young blood to live forever. He also supports DONALD TRUMP, so he’s a real sweetheart. Another person Thiel supports is congressional candidate RO KHANNA, who’s once again providing a fierce challenge to Rep. MIKE HONDA’s nap schedule. Khanna lauded Thiel declaring he’s a proud gay man at the RNC Convention, which teed up Honda’s go-to line about his opponent being backed by right-wing elite. That’s already been debunked—both Khanna and Honda have wealthy conservative donors—but Thiel also made headlines by recently admitting that he’s funded lawsuits against online tabloid Gawker with the goal of bankrupting the company. Back in 2007, Thiel wasn’t pounding podiums about being gay, but Gawker’s muckraking tech blog Valleywag They more or less outed him Did to a national audience.

Gawker and Valleywag have since written about SEND TIPS TO the sexual orientation FLY@ METRONEWS. of Silicon Valley’s elite, COM exposed entitled tech bros, published dick pics and sex tapes of celebrities, and broken or brought more attention to some of the biggest stories in recent years: ROB FORD’s crack habit; BILL COSBY’s drugging of women and HILLARY CLINTON’s email scandal, to name a few. But in Thiel’s mind, Gawker is a “singularly terrible bully,” which is why he’s funding HULK HOGAN’s sex tape lawsuit against the company, amongst others. Khanna has said he doesn’t always agree with Thiel on the issues, such as women (are they really an issue?) or social security, so, being an occasional muckraker, Fly wanted to know how Khanna feels about Thiel’s foray into the field of litigation finance against the media. While he doesn’t agree with Thiel’s lawsuits against Gawker, noting he supports a “robust press,” Khanna would request respect for “privacy and dignity.”

What’s In a Name?

Local education officials launch new effort to respect name, identity

AVID VARGAS acquired his new name at an indigenous ceremony 15 years ago. An old teacher visiting from Mexico rechristened him by some calculus involving the Aztec and Gregorian calendars as well as his favorite animal and color. Ever since, people have known him as Texomazatl, which translates to Blue Deer.

“I have considered making it my primary name because of how

common my actual name is and to feel more close to who I am,” says Vargas, a lifelong dancer who founded the San Jose-based Tezkatlipoka Aztec Dance and Drum school in 1988. “The historical reality for a lot of Mexican and Central American people is their Spanish names and last names are a reflection of the Spanish conquest.”

Since his renaming, Vargas has become known as Texomazatl— pronounced Te-sho-ma-zal—among traditional dance circles. At work, however, he still goes by David. Although his birth name is fairly common, it also tells a story. His mom named him after King David, the giant-slayer from the Old Testament. Unsurprisingly, his Aztec name is often mispronounced. But so, too, is his birth name.

“If they mispronounce my name, I just smile and tell them my name,” Vargas says. “When people call me Dave or Davey I tell them to either call me David [English pronunciation] or David [Spanish pronunciation] but don’t call me Dave or Davey, and I laugh and they laugh with me.”

Vargas is part of a growing movement in the United States to embrace traditional or unusual names. Though he adopted his Aztec moniker as an adult, a national campaign launched by the Santa Clara County Office of Education (SCCOE) called “My Name, My Identity” encourages children to feel a sense of pride about their name and patiently correct people who mispronounce it.

As a father, Vargas wanted to honor his heritage by giving both of his sons a Mayan first name and an Aztec middle name. “They are both adults

now,” he says, “but when they were younger they got made fun of by their classmates for their unique names.”

Even though he attended a bilingual school, his eldest son, Balam Vargas, was teased about his unusual identifier. “He was called ‘bin Laden’ by his classmates,” his father says. “His classmates did not realize where his name came from or the importance in how it defined Balam’s identity.”

Mispronouncing a person’s name invalidates their identity and can even lead to anxiety and resentment, says Yee Wan, who oversees English-asa-second-language programs for the SCCOE and helped launch the “My Name, My Identity” campaign this year.

For generations, ethnic minorities have grown used to having their names butchered by teachers, friends, coworkers and anyone outside of their immediate family. It may not seem like a big deal, Wan says, but that subtle inconsideration can have profound psychological effects. Children whose names are mispronounced tend to grow up feeling less important, sociologists Rita Kohli and Daniel G. Solorzano found in a study on the impact of racial microaggressions published in 2012 by Santa Clara University.

San Jose State student Kavin Mistry has only had one teacher in his life pronounce his name the right way, his fifth grade teacher. His first name, Kavin (Ka-veen), is of Indian descent; it means poet and creative.

His mother chose his name after realizing its meaning.

Mistry says that his name was mispronounced so often he just began to respond to the pronunciation, “cave-in,” because he didn’t feel correcting his teachers was worth the effort anymore and he got accustomed to it.

“It got frustrating after a while, but I understood why people had trouble saying it correctly,” Mistry says. “My second year of high school I just stopped correcting the teacher, because I knew they were not going to get it right.”

Names tell a unique story about a person’s culture and who they are, says Wan, who experienced microaggressions over her Chinese name as a first generation immigrant who moved to the United States as a 17-year-old college student. Her first

name, Yee, means friendship and her surname, Wan, means warmth.

In America, people call her Yee Wan. In China, she’s called Wan Yee. The name-flipping has caused a lot of confusion among her American friends and coworkers. Often, people around her would call her something else entirely. For years, Wan says, she was too timid to correct them.

“When I first came here as an international student my teacher had given me the name ‘Winnie,’” Wan says.

Though her teacher nicknamed her for convenience and no ill will, being called Winnie brought some sense of cultural erasure. It made Wan feel that her name and identity were unimportant. “I love her dearly, she’s very kind, helpful and supportive,” Wan says, “so I didn’t feel comfortable correcting her.”

Wan hopes that the “My Name, My Identity” initiative will educate teachers and community members about the importance of a person’s name. Particularly for people named after a family member, a saint or a positive personality trait. Or for people who choose to rename themselves.

The campaign asks people to take a pledge to respect a student’s name and identity. It’s a message that Wan expects to resonate in the South Bay, which claims one of the most culturally and ethnically diverse populations in the country.

“The first step to make a student feel welcomed is by showing interest in their name so they feel welcomed and connected,” she says.

By promoting self-advocacy and personal pride, the campaign also aims to prevent bullying by teaching respect, building a more inclusive community and making students feel more engaged in school. Evergreen School District recently wove that message into its back-to-school campaign. The district will give students name tags and buttons so students and staff can wear their personal identifiers as a badge of honor and a conversation prompt.

To date, nearly 1,883 people around the world have taken the “My Name, My Identity” pledge, in addition to more than 370 school districts and 760 cities.

“It’s about taking action,” Wan says.

“We have such a diverse community and this is something we should be really proud of.”

SJSU Icons Announce Return of ‘Speed City’ BY MELISSA HARTMAN Speed City will rise again, but not before San Jose State University raises $5 million to create a new track and field facility.

School officials, San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo, and SJSU and Olympic track legends all graced a makeshift stage Monday to announce the restoration of the men’s track program that put San Jose on the sports map.

Olympic medalists and SJSU alums Tommy Smith and John Carlos, immortalized by the on-campus statue that recreated their black power salute at the 1968 Olympics, both offered praise for the decision to restore the men’s track program and its legacy.

“The people who have tilled the soil to cultivate and plant the seeds are important,” Smith said. “Now we are moving and opening the gate to get into the field and cultivate more so. Once the money is raised, that will move the education along. Sports are education.”

SJSU plans to reinstate the men’s track and field team by October 2018,

slightly more than 50 years after Smith and Carlos—gold and bronze medal winners in the 200 meters, respectively—made their controversial civil rights stand on the treatment of African Americans at home.

Together, they stood on the medal podium steps in Mexico City and raised black-gloved fists as the U.S. national anthem played. Sports commentator Brent Musberger dismissed the two men as “blackskinned storm troopers” and many conservatives were appalled by an Olympic stage being used for a political protest.

On Monday, Smith stressed that Carlos and he were both students who were frustrated with putting in long hours as student-athletes, held up as celebrities on the track while still being viewed as inferior off of it. The statue represents not just their stand, Smith said, but also the struggle for equality as a society.

“We may have been the ones to

put the foot on the steps, but when we walked off we carried you with us,” Smith said.

SJSU’s new men’s team, which will join a still existing women’s track program, expects to begin competing in the spring of 2019, which will also coincide with another 50-year anniversary. The SJSU men’s track and field team garnered the nickname Speed City for its consistently stellar athletes, who won the 1969 NCAA outdoor track championships. Due to a reallocation of funding, SJSU discontinued the program in 1988.

Athletic director Gene Bleymaier said the goal of $5 million would go toward not only the men’s track and field facility, but also the women’s program, students and the surrounding community. The new facility will be named in honor of Bud Winter, the legendary coach who recruited and trained 91 student-athletes to top-10 international rankings. He also sent 27 athletes to the Olympics.

SJ Councilman Refuses to Concede Defeat Two months since June’s primary election and hours ahead of a vote to confirm results that put the challenger ahead by a remarkably slim margin, San Jose’s District 4 City Council incumbent refused to concede the race.

“What we have is a de facto tie,” Councilman Manh Nguyen declared in a last-minute memo, which hinted at legal action while imploring his colleagues to hold off on certifying the outcome at Tuesday’s council meeting.

Hours later, however, the second recount ended with his opponent Lan Diep holding a 12-vote lead.

Coincidentally, that’s a vote less than the margin by which Nguyen beat Diep last year. The pair first squared off for the seat in a 2015 special election to complete the Manh Nguyen term for Kansen Chu after his election to the state Assembly.

When Santa Clara County’s Registrar of Voters (ROV) certified the D4 results in July, Diep finished 28 votes ahead Nguyen out of 17,000 ballots cast. That the margin between contenders fell below half a percentage point triggered an automatic recount—a new rule enacted earlier this year.

The mandated recount dropped Diep’s lead to a dozen votes. But Nguyen still refused to concede, so he agreed to foot the $2,500-a-day bill for a second recount.

Tuesday marked the 11th day, which cost Nguyen $27,500. He’s about to pay a lot more if he goes through with his promise to litigate the outcome over alleged blunders by the ROV. Diep, for his part, remained hopeful.

Unless a lawsuit proves otherwise, he remains the councilman-elect.

How a new generation of jazz musicians are winning younger fans and breathing new life into the original American art form BY NICK VERONIN

R

ISING ABOVE THE din of boisterous, drinkfueled conversation and clinking glassware, a saxophone’s squawk snakes through the crowd.

Parting the cigarette smoke haze and ambling over sticky tabletops, a wandering double bass, a splashy trap kit and a peppery piano plod on. It’s the kind of place where a private eye might have met a dame desperately in need of help, or a venue for a gang of beats to stage a poetry slam. But this is not a page out of a dimestore novel or a scene from decades past. It happens right now—every weekend and most weeknights, anyway—in downtown San Jose.

“That’s one of my favorite things about playing at Café Stritch,” says Howard Wiley, a Bay Area-based saxophonist and drummer. The SoFA restaurant, bar and live music venue reminds him of some of his favorite jazz recordings. “You hear people talking. You hear people ordering drinks. You hear people engage in the music.”

What’s more, Wiley says: “I come across younger people.”

It’s not that he’s an ageist. Wiley just gets excited when he sees fresh

young faces taking an interest in jazz.

And lately, jazz lovers have plenty to be excited about.

about the state of the genre.

Brendan Rawson, executive director of San Jose Jazz, also gets excited about introducing younger audiences to jazz, which, he admits, has a way of alienating people who might otherwise be interested in the genre as a whole.

“Jazz, for a lot of folks, can be a loaded term,” he says. “It’s either that vapid, ‘smooth jazz’ sort of stuff, or it’s: ‘That’s that weird shit; why can’t they just play the right note?’ kind of thing.”

Rawson is referring to the tendency among those who are

unfamiliar with jazz to lump it into one of two categories—the sterile Muzak of elevators, doctor’s office lobbies and shopping malls, or the impenetrable free jazz appreciated largely by overzealous intellectuals.

But even in its most awkward phases of growth—whether it’s corporate radio suits pushing the mind-numbing, electric sax-driven “quiet storm” format, or ivory tower academics insisting upon mashing at their ivory keys in a most discordant manner—the true spirit of jazz is

always laying in wait, ready to make yet another triumphant return. And both Wiley and Rawson say they can see the jazz world in the midst of just such a revival.

Riders On The Storm “It seems like the early ’90s are back again,” Wiley says, name-checking A Tribe Called Quest, DJ Premier and the late J. Dilla, noting their proclivity for diving deep into record store bargain bins and excavating

amazing jazz samples. “I think we’re back where people are looking for and needing creative music, but also something that’s soulful and—I hate the word ‘accessible’—but something that’s relatable.”

“The hip-hop generation has come of age,” Rawson says, observing that the most recent crop of jazz players did not develop their chops in a vacuum.

“They are combing the music they grew up on and the popular culture

In Chicago, the production collective THEMpeople and emcee Chance The Rapper are drawing upon the jazzy sounds of generations past and repackaging them for their mostly young audience.

Los Angeles is home to the bass virtuoso and producer Thundercat, who recently teamed with Flying Lotus on his electronic ode to the end of life, You’re Dead. SoCal is also the headquarters of Kamasi Washington, who delivered a number of rip-roaring saxophone solos on Kendrick Lamar’s critically acclaimed To Pimp a Butterfly— an album whose liner notes read like a cheat sheet on emergent jazz talent.

Over on the East Coast, Ghostface Killah—who made a name for himself in the legendary, jazz- and kung fu flick-sampling Wu Tang Clan— recently teamed up with Toronto post-boppers BADBADNOTGOOD for the Sour Soul LP. Perhaps the most obvious example of the jazz-hip-hop connection is The Tonight Show—that bastion of mainstream American pop culture, broadcast into millions of living rooms all across the country five nights a week. It’s easy to forget that The Roots

were a forward-thinking jazz and hip-hop fusion group long before they became Jimmy Fallon’s house band.

A number of the aforementioned artists have come to San Jose in recent years to perform at the San Jose Jazz Summer Fest. Just last year, SJZ hosted two performances by Kamasi Washington—one at the historic California Theatre and one on the festival’s main stage—as well as a DJ set by Ali Shaeed Muhammad of A Tribe Called Quest at the Continental Bar, Lounge and Patio.

In yet another sign that younger, mainstream audiences are developing an appetite for jazz, Rawson points to the success Washington has seen since swinging through San Jose last summer. “I could never afford him now,” Rawson says with a laugh, noting that the saxophonist was well received at this year’s Coachella.

Jazz Never Left If there is indeed a rising cohort of jazz musicians attracting younger listeners to the genre, it only makes sense, Rawson says: “Jazz is very comfortable reinventing itself. It’s sort of baked into the character of jazz. You’re always going to

Patron Saint In 1957, right around the time Elvis Presley, was launching his career with the iconic film, Jailhouse Rock, Rahsaan Roland Kirk was embarking on his own professional musical odyssey.

The blind multi-instrumentalist would eventually become known for his progressive style, boundary-pushing performances—which involved playing three specially modified saxophones simultaneously—and his cosmic philosophies that at times recall the Afrofuturism of Sun Ra. Effortlessly hip and fully committed to his art, Kirk is the patron saint of Café Stritch. Though an honorific for a man who passed away nearly 40 years ago, it is a title that Maxwell

Borkenhagen, artistic director of Café Stritch, takes quite seriously.

“For me, in general it’s about trying to redefine jazz for my generation,” Borkenhagen says.

Like Wiley and Rawson, Borkenhagen is all too familiar with the misconceptions held by so many uninitiated. “There is this tragic association among young people who really don’t know about jazz,” he says, referring to those who conflate the sprawling world of jazz with one or two self-indulgent, niche subgenres. “For me, there is a line connecting blues, jazz, rock & roll and punk. They’ve all been really rebellious forms. Rahsaan, in a way, is a perfect example of that. He wanted nothing to do with the mainstream.”

Borkenhagen grew up surrounded by jazz and the music of Kirk, whom his parents first lionized when they named their former restaurant “Eulipia”—a Kirk-coined word, taken San Jose Jazz from his song, Summer Fest “Theme for the Eulipions,” Check out next an ode to week’s issue for a rundown of hot artists and all Summer Fest acts. creative types.

And so, Café Stritch stands as an ode, not only to creativity and artistic integrity, but also to the rebellious through-line that runs from the earliest days of New Orleans brass up to the furious drumming of East Bay native Thomas Pridgen—who has performed with acts as diverse as psychedelic post-punks The Mars Volta, thrash metal revivalists Trash Talk and Wiley’s own rotating crew of Café Stritch regulars, Extra Nappy.

“Rahsaan was so true to his genuine creative impulses and he didn’t take shit from people,” Borkenhagen says, adding that jazz music depends on a particular vibe.

“I’ve observed time and time again where people might come in thinking jazz is lame or whatever, but then they experience the vibe. And that vibe—when you allow great musicians to do what they do—it’s going to make some converts. They’ll at least make the association that jazz is hip. People don’t necessarily remember that these days.”

have artists in the genre that are experimenting and crossing over.”

Furthermore, Wiley observes, it is completely logical that the world of hip-hop would look to jazz, as Kendrick Lamar did on To Pimp A Butterfly. “There’s no way we could have any of the pop music that we like, any of the hip-hop music that we like without having jazz,” Wiley says. The way he sees it, just about every serious musician has necessarily drawn inspiration from the great jazz players and singers. “Every generation of rapper comes up talking about jazz. Every generation of soul singer talks about jazz.”

And after all, jazz’s ultimate return to cool might just be fated. After all, the “cool cats” of the jazz world are responsible for codifying the colloquial definition of “cool” in the first place.

“There’s always that resurgence,” Wiley says of the rolling jazz revival waves, perpetually lurking on the horizon. “There’s always the search for something truly nurturing and real.

It’s always here, it’s always brewing.”

There was a time when jazz was the popular music of the day. Jazz provided the soundtrack to the Roaring Twenties and followed Americans into basement speakeasies.

Big band jazz gave way to funk, soul and R&B, while self-taught bluesmen of the rural south—guitarists like Leadbelly and Muddy Waters— inspired kids to pick up guitars and hack together a little something we now call rock & roll.

As a 20 year-old, Turre played alongside Rahsaan Roland Kirk. Inspired by Rahsaan’s multi-instrument, mediumdefying creativity, Turre took the spirit of the icon and applied it to an unconventional instrument: conch shells. Known in pop culture mostly for their ability to rally barbarians, Turre uses the conch to blow ghostly solos, his delicate notes floating out of the calcified fractals in a buzzy wail.

Gathered during his travels through the Caribbean and Great Barrier Reef of Australia, he cuts the openings to hit a precise pitch. While playing, he modulates the notes by inserting his hand into their swirled openings and seamlessly switches between the limited-register shells, popping high notes out of the smaller ones and weaving bass melodies with the larger ones. More conventionally, the ponytailed savant plays the trombone and has accompanied legends like Carlos Santana and Ray Charles.

VER THE COURSE of his career, Rahsaan Roland Kirk was not always appreciated. Nonetheless, he inspired many stillactive jazz musicians.

Running the gamut from a trombonist and conch shell player to a pianist and composer to a Bill-Clintonapproved saxophonist, the following artists either played with Rahsaan or deeply studied his works, making them the closest replicators of that singular man’s sound. This week they come together at Café Stritch’s annual Rahsaanathon to honor the legendary jazzman.

Rahsaan attracted the attention of musical king-maker Ed Sullivan with his rendition of “My Cherie Amour,” a swaying love ballad that he rendered distinctly by switching between his three saxophones. But when Rahsaan appeared on Sullivan’s final show accompanied by pianist Smith, bassist Charles Mingus and saxophonist Archie Shepp, they broke their promise to play the meandering ballad. In the green room before their five-minute slot, Rahsaan worked himself into a lather proclaiming, “We’re gonna burn it down! We’re gonna burn the place down!”

And burn it down they did.

The all-star ensemble unleashed Mingus’ spirit-quickening “Haitian Fight Song,” an already frenetic composition that got cranked up to eleven and stunned the iconic host and his studio audience who were expecting “classical jazz.”

An accomplished composer as well, he collaborated with Shamek Farrah on The World of the Children, where he slams, tickles and taps the ivory and ebony, flying through differing rhythms and melodies in an inspired display of range and prowess.

Claire Daly knew by the age of 12 that she wanted to play the saxophone for the rest of her life. But making a living proved to be a trickier. She played everywhere from jazz clubs to parades to rock concerts before deciding to lay down a record of her own. Wielding her huge baritone sax, she produced Swing Low in 1999, an exceptional debut as a leader. The release garnered the attention of perhaps the most famous saxophone player at the time, President Bill Clinton, who placed the record into his eponymous Arkansas Library as a CD significant to him while he was in Rahsaanathon office. Years later, to return Aug 3-7, $15-$50 the favor, she Various Times played at a Café Stritch, Democratic San Jose fundraiser. In that same year, she paid tribute to Rahsaan alongside an all-star cast of musicians including Dave Hofstra and Eli Yamin, and she enjoyed the icon’s stylings so much that she’s continued reimagining his works into the present.

More recently, in 2012 the North Coast Brewing Co. produced a record of hers in conjunction with the release of their Belgian style dark ale, Brother Thelonious, the name forming a cheeky tribute to the lauded composer-pianist Thelonious Monk and the monks that traditionally brew the high-potency ale.

James Carter With his combination of multi-instrument prowess, atypical sounds and pure joy, James Carter gets as close as possible to replicating the singular brilliance of Rahsaan. The virtuosic Carter has mastered the gauntlet of reed instruments, from sopranino to contrabass saxophones to contrabass and bass clarinets.

When he plays, he scampers up and down the sonic spectrum, biting his reed to hit scratchy, oddly hypnotizing notes, then huffing and slapping to create an almost percussive effect, before soaring to ear-piercing heights— occasionally heaving a sigh in comic contrast to his breakneck stylings. Nicknamed the “Jimi Hendrix of Jazz,” his solos are testament to the limitless potential of the human imagination.

The extraordinary life of jazz expert Dr. Herbert Wong will be celebrated along with the posthumous publication of his book, Jazz on My Mind: Liner Notes, Anecdotes and Conversations from the 1940s to 2000s. Internationally known for his jazz expertise, Wong started out as a DJ during WWII in the Armed Forces Radio Network. He went on to spin jazz at KJAZ for more than 35 years. Wong also founded the Berkeley Unified School District’s jazz program, Palo Alto Records and Blackhawk Records, where musicians including Stan Getz, Dizzy Gillespie and Elvin Jones recorded. San Francisco natives and ’80s rock sensations Huey Lewis and the News are returning to Mountain Winery after nearly four decades of success. The band has benefitted from prominent mentions and placement in several well-known films—some of which were clearly tongue-in-cheek. New Works shows in-development plays to live audiences

N THE THEATER world, audiences are mostly limited to showing approval through cheering and bursts of applause.

Theatergoers are rarely asked to participate in the artistic process themselves—especially not before a performance goes to production. But the New Works Festival was never meant to be an average theatergoing experience.

When the Palo Alto-based TheatreWorks launched the New Works Festival in 2002, the company’s artistic director, Robert Kelley, didn’t just want to bring unique performances

to the Peninsula, he wanted to build an entirely new community of highly invested theater fans. The idea was to give audiences a first look at a handful of innovative plays and musicals, allowing them to rate scripts and give feedback to playwrights and directors during the earliest stages of production.

“I felt we had lost our commitment to new works and that it was time to revisit, revive and replenish our love for them,” Kelley explains. “Not only did we rekindle the fire in the heart of TheatreWorks for new works, but we almost immediately began seeing the thrill that our audience took in discovering something entirely new for the first time in theatre.”

The 15th annual New Works Festival, which runs Aug. 12-21, features three musicals, two plays and a special performance by a group of young performers from Stanford University.

In addition to providing feedback on readings over the course of the fest, attendees will also take part in larger conversations on innovation in American theatre at the festival’s culminating event—a Meet the Artists Panel, where participants, both on- and off-stage, interact and share ideas.

The two-week event includes Archduke, a new drama exploring the assassination of Franz Ferdinand, the spark that ignited World War I, written

by Pulitzer Prize finalist Rajiv Joseph; I Enter the Valley, a romantic drama by rising playwright Dipika Guha based on the life of poet Pablo Neruda; The Four Immigrants, a musical that melds manga and comedy with a story of Japanese immigration at the turn of the century; Eddie The Marvelous, Who Will Save The World, a rock & roll musical about a boy who wants to save the world, but struggles with leaving his own house; Something Wicked This Way Comes, a chilling musical adaptation of the eponymous Ray Bradbury novel by Drama Desk nominees Neil Bartram and Brian Hill; and Gravity, a time traveling musical odyssey from

Stanford University artists about a modern physicist heading back to 1666 to meet Sir Isaac Newton.

“What makes New Works exciting is that it explores what’s being written right now by living authors, living in the same world we’re in,” says Giovanna Sardelli, the director of the New Works Festival and of Rajiv Joseph’s Archduke.

“It’s exciting to witness what stories they choose to tell, and as a director it’s important to always have pieces that are challenging and exciting.”

Sardelli’s role as festival director encompass both artist and audience satisfaction, from pairing directors who are “supportive but also challenging” with playwrights, to priming audiences to give feedback in a way that’s clear to artists. The New Works development process provides a unique opportunity for emerging artists; they receive two full weeks of workshop time—including two public presentations—after which they receive notes on how they might improve their productions.

“If you’ve written a joke and the audience at large laughs, you can feel pretty good that you’ve done your job well,” Sardelli says. “Conversely, if you think you’ve written something really funny and your audience leaves more confused than amused, you know you have work to do.”

In past years, the New Works Festival has featured a number of productions that have gone on to gain recognition around the world: Both Emma and Fly By Night got their start at New Works, in addition to the Tony-winning Broadway musical Memphis.

Organizers hope that the fest continues to grow in popularity, and builds a legacy of giving back to the theatre community through expanded productions across the nation. But above all, giving audiences the chance to observe, imagine and enjoy the experience of theatre reigns supreme.

“I want audiences to be moved, and provoked to think about the world in ways they otherwise wouldn’t have looked at,” Sardelli says with a warm smile. “I hope they feel challenged, inspired, and excited. And entertained— let’s make sure we’re doing that.”

Starting Aug. 4, a giant swingset will play music in the Plaza de Cesar Chavez.

The nationally touring art installation features 21 rainbow-colored seats that produce notes made by gentle instruments like pianos, harps and xylophones. As participants coordinate their swings, The Swings the set produces a fuller, more satisfying melody—a breezy song to fill San Jose’s central-most park.

Conceived by the Montreal-based public art organization Daily Tous les Jours, The Swings have made stops in Colorado, Detroit and Manhattan’s financial district. They conclude their tour in San Jose. The piece enlivens the park, which recently began hosting food trucks and adirondack chairs to entice regular visitors who use the park for purposes other than hitting kickflips.

The two-month exhibit will also add to the city’s burgeoning public art scene. Beyond more traditional works, such as murals and yarn-bombing, organizations like sponsor Zero1 have been pioneering a tech-inspired artistry. And the city has reflected this movement in their installation of pieces like the undulating blue lights, which shine down on Santa Clara Street from the underside of the Highway 87 overpass.

“San Jose is ideally located in so many ways to be that nexus for the technology world and the world of culture and art,” Handler says. “We feel as though we're riding the wave of a really strong flow of interest in cultural expression.”

Adobe and Applied Materials also joined the sponsorship team for the project.

And Handler notes that these corporations have long lobbied the city to bolster downtown’s artsiness. “We want to make multiple places in downtown San Jose that are actually fun to be in,” she says. “Being out in the open air with friends and family and colleagues and getting a little physical exercise and making music at the same time—what could be better?”—John Flynn

EREFT OF HUMOR or sex, the Bourne series gives audiences a choice of brands. If James Bond is Fodor’s, Bourne (Matt Damon) is Lonely Planet. But is it really fair to call this series grittier or more mature than 007?

The last Bourne introduced super-soldier pills: “chems,” they were called. This fifth movie based on the adventures of Robert Ludlum’s assassin, gives us a morose Damon in front of barely seen cities, identified with captions, such as “London, United

Kingdom.” It’s clipped into snippets of graffitied walls, trains, trams, stomped gearshift pedals and startled crowds.

As a former documentarian, director Paul Greengrass is a great believer in the swiftness with which violence occurs. He might agree with Mao’s principle: “The guerrilla must move through the people as a fish swims through the ocean.” Bourne saves himself by hiding in packs of city people. This saves him during the film’s best scene, an attempted hit on a CIA turncoat Nicky (Julia Stiles) during the middle of a night riot in Athens. Bourne plucks flaming Molotov cocktails from the hands of demonstrators and escapes, via motorcycle, down staircases.

tagline from the Timothy Dalton days, say: “You know his name.” The joke is, Bourne doesn’t seem to know his own name, having given up his identity for this codename. Many would conduct an investigation with stealth, but when Bourne wants to have a quiet chat with a reluctant former spook (Bill Camp), the man is hauled to a roof, after Bourne sets off a fire drill for most of North London. The milling crowds complicate the work for an implacable sniper, a hawknosed scowler referred to as “Asset” (Vincent Cassel).

Then it’s off to “Silicon Valley, USA.” We’re here to meet Aaron Kalloor (Riz Ahmed) the liquid-eyed and benign CEO of Deep Dream, some kind of search engine/social network with a billion users. Kalloor’s latest project is to be unveiled at Exocon in “Las Vegas, Nevada.” Unfortunately, the CEO has unfinished business with the CIA thug, Dewey (Tommy Lee Jones), who, in his insane desire

Dewey is continuing the creation of those CIA black-ops programs that sound like Napa wineries: “Treadstone,” “Blackthorn” and the new and most scary, “Ironhand”— wasn’t Ironhand a Get Smart villain?

Suffering under Dewey’s sexist patronization is CIA analyst Heather Lee, played by Alicia Vikander. Her rich brown hair is cruelly clamped back, and she has a pout that makes her look like a pint-sized and unhappy replica of the Statue of Liberty. She has grounds for glumness. Dewey keeps patting her on the back with his scaly hand.

Few movies will cut from “the Greek/Albanian border” to “Reykjavik, Iceland,” and that’s the thrill of espionage movies right there—they give the sense of a globe girdled with spies. The surveillance never stops, with closed-circuit cameras measuring facial metrics worldwide. In such situations, you can always tell the computer operator: “enhance.”

Of course, even the enhancement doesn’t always help. “Sir, The Asset has landed,” Dewey is informed. But where has he landed? Germany?

London? In the name of speed and percussion, Greengrass chops it up, even zooming to put some urgency into a moment of a person sitting and thinking. Editor and co-writer Christopher Rouse cuts a scene of Bourne getting into a Berlin taxi into three angles. It’s not like we saw this scene and said “Enhance.”

The crazily realistic editing makes the finale a cubist fantasy of destruction. Bourne uses a Dodge Charger to mop up the traffic on The Strip, in pursuit of The Asset. Sadly, it’s not as beautifully legible as in the trailers. We hear a CIA agent claiming “We’re still trying to put together a narrative to explain what happened.”

Revivals DUCK SOUP/A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM

(1933/1935) The title is a dead idiom— it meant “something that’s really easy.”

Duck Soup represents the acme of the Marx Brothers' art, in detonating cliches, in creative verbal assaults, in exposing the pompous, in exalting the hustling lowlife. It’s a satire on the business of war, with mustachioed profiteer Rufus T. Firefly (Groucho) assuming the leadership of the tiny nation of Fredonia, while seducing the wealthy aristo Margaret Dumont in a parody of the courtship in the popular operetta “The Merry Widow.” Meanwhile, intrepid agents provocateurs Chico and Harpo, hired by the nation of Sylvania, foment trouble. Raquel Torres, a sleek satinclad Latina, gives Groucho someone really leer-worthy to play against. As an antiwar film, it's peerless, because it doesn't give the nobility of war any room whatsoever. Witness Groucho exulting, "Look at them! They're fleeing like rats!" while machine-gunning his own troops in the back. BILLED WITH A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Feelings were mixed about most of Warner Brothers’ contract players taking on the film version of impresario Max Reinhart’s mega-production. Composer Erich Wolfgang Korngold, who shaped Mendelssohn’s music for it, supposedly summed it up: “Wunderbar! Terrific— tremendous—stupendous—but bad!”

It’s not bad. It has quaint charm. Some of the stars flicker a little—Mickey Rooney as Puck could have used a time out, and Dick Powell is a gusty Athenian, playing it with varsity pep. But it has a fine flamboyant Bottom (James Cagney) and a gorgeous and very young Hero (Olivia de Havilland). (Aug 3-5 at the Stanford Theatre.) (RvB)

Daniel is so short, and “Gasoline” because Theo tinkers so much with internal combustion engines that he reeks of petrol. On their trashpicking expeditions, that two find a twocylinder engine, which they build into a car. The boys build a makeshift wooden RV and run away into the countryside.

Gondry, best known for combinations of animation and live action, has walked away from the magic and puppetry into the realm of David Lynch’s The Straight Story. There’s a large audience for stories of road trips and tiny houses, but this episodic, chugging journey, with stops at a Korean massage parlor and temporary imprisonment by an evil dentist, doesn’t find the poetry it aims for. It’s a movie seemingly made only as a solace for aging children. (RvB)

PHANTOM BOY

Hospitalized with cancer, a young boy learns the art of astral projection, and leaves his pain-wracked body to team up with a NYPD detective (also laid up with injuries). The two try to capture a disfigured supervillain whose resemblance to Jigsaw in The Punisher lore will provide geeks with food for thought. (He’s more like a Picasso painting than a scarface, though.)

Directors Jean-Loup Felicioli and Alain Gagnol (A Cat in Paris) have taste and tenderness. This handsome traditionally animated cartoon is often touching, but the American dubbing seems rushed, lacking feeling. There ought to be a law that the head villain shouldn’t have the dey-dese-dose accent reserved for the henchmen. (RvB)

14-something year old Daniel (Ange Dargent) has a father—a gray, groaning man, absent even when he’s right there in the room. Daniel’s mom (a drabbed-down Audrey Tautou) works at seminars for some kind of vaguely theosophist spiritualists. She relaxes by collapsing and having crying jags.

At school, Daniel meets the suave yet quirky Theo (Theophile Maquette). The two rejects are given mean nicknames in the schoolyard: “Microbe” because

BAD GIRL In ‘Suicide Squad,’ Margot Robbie’s character Harley Quinn shows an imprudent amount of skin for a member of a CIA-backed paramilitary force.

Team-Building Exercise IN SUICIDE SQUAD, a group of supervillains is harnessed by a covert government organization to fight superhuman threats—to begin with, a pair of brother and sister Elder Gods trying to kick-start the apocalypse. David Ayer, the talented director of the WWII film Fury, has to mix styles and flavors. In an atmospherefree cocktail lounge, loud music is used to set the mood. Needle drops plague the beginning: “House of the Rising Sun” by The Animals for rainy exteriors of a super-ultra-supermax prison in the Louisiana swamps. Then comes “You Don’t Own Me” for our first view of the caged and dangerous Harley Quinn (the overexposed model Margot Robbie).

Killer Croc—Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, playing the man-reptile as Mike Tyson with leprosy—isn’t actually introduced with “Crocodile Rock,” but it’s a near thing.

Most uninteresting is the human-sized lead, Deadshot, the helmeted mercenary played

by Will Smith; as usual, the Smith character just wants to go home and be a daddy.

As voiced by Arleen Sorkin on Batman: The Animated Series, Harley was a beguiling Brooklyn ditz in a fine toxic Krazy Kat and Ignatz romance. Who could love The Joker more than himself ? In buttfloss rollerskate shorts, and a kinderslut outfit,

complete with bubblegum and pigtails, Robbie wobbles between daft child and supposedly irresistible femme fatale.

The promotional Suicide Squad pictures of Jared Leto’s Joker were worth the PG-13; 130 Mins. thousands of words by Valleywide outraged fans; the steel teeth look like a sixth-grader’s braces, and the fussy forehead tattoo reading “Damaged” in a copperplate script is about as redoubtable as a fancy Williamsburg beard. Suicide Squad isn’t the Joker’s movie any more than it is Batman’s tale. But Mr. J could have been the cold mad eye of this digital hurricane. As it stands, he’s a pesky performance artist with no jokes.

What’s surprising is that there is some good acting in this rote super-melodrama; the military liaison Rick Flag (the Keith Carradine-like Joel Kinnaman) has an attractive mildness to go with the macho certainty. Similarly authentic is the fire-cholo El Diablo (Jay Hernandez), in mourning from having immolated so many people. He brings the suicidal qualities to this movie: he’s grave and sad, but he still amuses himself by making a tiny dancer out of a flame in his hand, as a barroom trick. —Richard von Busack

Totally Warped WHAT THE WAKA? Yeah. We know it’s crazy. But Waka Flocka Flame is definitely playing this year’s Warped Tour.

Old-school ska, mucho metalcore, classic punk at Warped Tour

T

HE WARPED TOUR debuted in 1995, making the travelling alternative music festival as old as its average attendee. And while punk acts have teeter-tottered in mainstream popularity in the intervening decades, the festival is still going strong with a mix of legacy acts and newer bands.

Skanking to the Oldies This year’s main stage finds ’90s ska veterans Less Than Jake and Reel Big Fish high up on the bill,

in spots that might previously have been held by more contemporary groups. In fact, besides headliner Falling in Reverse, most of the bands on the main stage this year hail from the late ’90s and early 2000s—with Sum 41, New Found Glory, Yellowcard, and Four Year Strong rounding out the bill.

Metalcore Mania The mashed up genre of dissonant metal riffs and pop-punk choruses known as metalcore is a big part of Warped Tour these days. And much of the main two support stages’ acts fall into this category. Pioneers of the genre like Atreyu and Every Time I Die join a number of newer bands like Issues, Chelsea Grin, Oceans Ate Alaska, and the Japanese band Coldrain who are making their very first stop in the Bay Area.

Pop Punk Party Many of the remaining bands on the bill walk a line between punk looks and pop hooks. Bands like Sykes from the UK (a three piece of keys, guitar, and drums), whose poppy choruses are really only a step or two removed from R&B. Bands from a similar mold are Australia’s Tonight Alive—an unabashedly pop group on the list— The Maine (not from Maine), and The Summer Set, whose lyric “I’m a bit too pop for the punk / but I’m too punk for the pop kids” may be on-thenose but also seems to be the MO of many of this year’s bands.

The Classics Finally, there are the mainstays of pop-punk bands, like Teenage Bottlerocket, who play the Cyclops Stage this year, and Fat Wreck artist Masked Intruder. These two bands have been working the DIY and punk circuit for years and for many people represent the kind of ethos and drive found previously in the Less Than Jakes and New Found

Glorys of the festival. Also included is Walnut Creek’s The Story So Far. Just be sure not to take any selfies on stage around them. A video of that group’s singer dropkicking a girl from the stage for doing just that went viral earlier this year.

WTF?!

The Warped Tour has made some rather odd booking decisions in the past. Case in point, that time they brought former From G’s To Gents contestant, dadaist rapper and aspiring professional wrestler RiFF RAFF along for the ride. In the spirit of keeping Warped attendees on their toes, they’ve done it again. This year’s award for biggest WTF artist to Atlanta’s Waka Flocka Flame, whose “Hard in Da Paint” is one of the major early anthems of trap music.

OT HEARS ARE mellow, drunks can be mean. That's the common wisdom, and now, thanks to a group of researchers from the Netherlands, it has some scientific validation. In a just-published study in the journal Psychopharmacology, they found that—doh!—people on booze act out, while people on pot peacefully space out.

“The results in the present study support the hypothesis that acute alcohol intoxication increases feelings of aggression and that acute cannabis intoxication reduces feelings of aggression,” the researchers concluded.

The study itself sounds like fun. In a random, controlled trial, the researchers recruited 21 heavy pot smokers (at least three times a week), first time patient receives a free top shelf pre-roll 20 heavy drinkers (at least three drinks a day for men, two for women), and a control group of 20 who used neither substance heavily.

OPEN everyday from 9am-9pm They then had the drinkers drink until they were too drunk to legally drive (0.08 percent blood alcohol level) and the tokers vape up 300 micrograms of THC per kilogram of body weight, enough to get them nicely baked. The control group, being the control group, missed out on the intoxicants.

Then all three groups completed a number of tests designed to get people wound up. In one, subjects played a computer game in which the object was to win money by pressing buttons, but players’ efforts were undermined by an “adversary” that took money from them. The adversary was actually part of the computer program. San Jose’s soccer fandom grows during, after MLS All-Star Week

VER FIVE DAYS, the Major League Soccer All-Star game and accompanying festivities took over the San Jose landscape in a multitude of ways. In addition to the main event, other components included concerts, live TV broadcasts and local community service work, all of which provided potential insight into how the game and fan base continue to grow in San Jose.

During the match pitting the MLS All-stars against Arsenal, one of England’s most storied clubs, 20-year-old Chuba Akpom scored the winning goal for Arsenal in the final minutes. He was one of many younger players manager Arsene Wenger chose in order to test his club’s mettle. This made for intriguing comparisons to the MLS All-stars, which included a handful of European players who’d come to MLS after completing their prime years back home—folks like Andrea Pirlo, Kaka, Didier Drogba and David Villa. In Akpom’s case, he said it was like competing against all the legends he’d already played with on FIFA, but unlike a video game they all now shared the same field in reality.

Akpom joined Arsenal’s youth development program at age six and came up through their system before being loaned to various lower division clubs. Now he’s trying to battle his way into Arsenal’s starting lineup. This is exactly the type of excitement that should unfold once the Earthquakes build their new academy complex at Guadalupe Gardens, a project in partnership with the city and the Guadalupe Park Conservancy. Young kids might join the academy and, if they’re serious, theoretically rise up through the system and perhaps even land a spot on the professional team.

Such scenarios are part of how the game grows on a local level, and how residents can become more emotionally vested in the team and connect to the culture. More people then become interested in the club, its history and how it all relates to the local landscape.

community by building a miniature field at Ocala STEAM Academy. The pitch was part of the 20 for 20 MiniPitch Initiative, a commitment the partners made to build 20 mini-soccer fields in underserved communities across North America. Rather than kids resorting to play in the streets, where numerous problems can occur, each field provides children and local communities with an unstructured but safe environment, supporting the continued growth of the game.

This way, many kids can take it upon themselves to develop their own creativity and natural instincts for the game while meeting other players in the process. Everybody wins.

As part of these developments, Ocala STEAM Academy will also soon house San Jose’s chapter of Soccer for Success, a free nationwide afterschool program for underserved areas in which at-risk youth can receive coaching and mentoring. Kids, as well as their parents or guardians, learn about nutrition, teamwork, persistence and other life skills they might not have a chance to develop. This also helps to create more potential fans of the hometown club, of course.

Meanwhile, all last week, both San Pedro Square Market and Plaza de Cesar Chavez, two of San Jose’s most popular locales, transformed into mini-headquarters for the All-star Game events. In the park, Celebrity Soccer-Tennis matches took place, with notable appearances including Brandi Chastain and Landon Donovan. Members of Arsenal’s staff even ventured out from their rooms at the Fairmont to join. Donovan was in town to coach the MLS Homegrown team, which went on to lose 2-0 to Mexico’s U-20 team.

Plaza de Cesar Chavez also featured NBC’s Men in Blazers, aka Michael Davies and Roger Bennett, who broadcast live from the stage to a seated audience of 500-1,000 people. Of course, they just had to open the whole show with that nauseating Dionne Warwick song that even she doesn’t like, but quite a few athletes and personalities joined them on stage, including ’Quakes forward Chris Wondolowski and coach Dominic Kinnear. To conclude the show, the Men in Blazers then brought out Krazy George. All in all, numerous layers of San Jose soccer culture remained on display for the world to see.

UMANS HAVE LONG added toppings to their breads to make them tastier. Ancient Persian soldiers used their shields as a makeshift flattop to bake dates and cheese into flatbreads.

When tomatoes arrived from the New World, chefs in Naples created pizza and the rustic dish soon traveled from the city’s poorer districts to the royal dinner table. Italian immigrants brought their recipes to America, but pizza stayed in their enclaves until after World War II, when soldiers returned home raved about the bakers who had supplemented their rations.

Across from San Jose State University, Sammy G’s continues the tradition of Americans using decadent fusion to ramp up a traditional dish several notches. Their two most popular pizzas—the El Presidente and the Buffalo Mac—are pizzas in the same sense that Guy Fieri is a chef. In theory, they fit the mold, but in practice they forsake tradition for outlandish flavor.

The El Presidente ($12 for a 10-inch pizza) spun things in a Mexican direction. It came adorned with fall-apart carnitas, black beans and diced tomatoes. The most masterful touches were the fresh cilantro garnish, salsa verde drizzles and a splash of the lauded La Victoria orange sauce.

The only other Mexican Pizza I’ve ever tried came from Taco Bell, so there isn’t a ton to compare. But the predominant local cuisine fit nicely on Sammy G’s cracker crust that held up even under the considerable weight of the toppings.

The Buffalo Mac ($12) substitutes the conventional sprinkling of mozzarella for a couple handfuls of mac-n-cheese that sit below tender chunks of spicy buffalo chicken breast. It’s an above-average pie, but the sheer audacity to cast these actors in the lead roles deserves praise Among their appetizers, I tried the Tot-chos ($6), which possessed a recklessness towards calories typically found at the State Fair. The crisp taters got doused in a melty aged-cheddar cheese sauce, then sprinkled with sour cream and freshly cooked bacon bits.

On tap, they’ve got a solid selection of beers, and my Racer 5 IPA provided a crisp, citrusy contrast to the massive amount of fat I horked down. For the morning crowd, they’ve got breakfast pizzas, including the Huevos Rancheros Pizza ($11) that’s basically the El Presidente with an egg instead of carnitas.

Ludwig’s German Table in downtown San Jose is not Oktoberfest, but it’s the kind of restaurant and beer garden the city didn’t know it desperately needed. Operating out of Germania Hall a block over from St. James Park and longtime German haunt Teske’s, I joined a few friends for beers and brats and enjoyed the late summer camaraderie best experienced over cold ones.

The laugenbretzel mit senf (pretzel with mustard; $4) came out piping hot, easy to tear and soft enough to remind that fresh baked bread is a luxury. The small snack had just enough salt and a nice smear of spicy mustard to swirl across the plate.

We started with a couple mugs of Fruh Kolsch ($6.50 half-liter; $13 1L), and then we went with a couple more Fruh Kolsch. The beer goes down smooth in the way excellent German beer always does. This isn’t an exaggeration—no culture honors its beer more than the Germans.

Villages across the country brew their own provincial brand and typically have a specialized style of glass in which it’s best enjoyed.

The currywurst ($9) was a delicious mix of tomato sauce and spices that provided subtle heat. The meat was cooked just right and the sauce paired great with the side of pommes (French fries; $4.50 individually). Because I eat like the last night before fat camp, I also had no problem scooping up hunks of scrumptious potato salad ($4.50)—the menu offers it with mayo or vinegar; mayo, please—with the fries and a small dash of curry. I stand by the opinion that truly outstanding cuisine (i.e. Mexican food, Thanksgiving) should be enjoyed frenetic and indistinguishable like a Royal Rumble ring. The Dittmer’s bratwurst ($8) came with spicy mustard and sauerkraut; just enough for the missus with the potato salad and pretzel. The beer filler certainly didn't hurt.

Ludwig’s patio already rivals anything downtown San Jose has to offer, while the small interior, which includes a bar and dining area, are PUB DATE: suitable for an upscale date or dinner party. Service is attentive and good 00/00/15 spirited and the beers arrive tall and cold. Communal seating might be an issue later in the evening when they get busy, but that’s kind of the NUMBER: point:ISSUE good food, good beer and good company. —Josh Koehn
