Office Space State Sen. JIM BEALL trounced NORA CAMPOS in last week’s election, but the San Jose assemblywoman still has five more months to pilfer contributions raise funds for her campaign thanks to the state’s jungle primary system, where the top two vote-getters automatically advance. So where is Nora’s money going? Maybe to her. At the end of last year she reportedly loaned her campaign $35,000, which is a lot of money to cough up on a campaign almost certain to end in defeat. Fly sure would love to see copies of those checks.

Stanford rape case raises vital questions of justice, consent

A

JURY OF PEERS saw Brock Turner the rapist who sexually assaulted an incapacitated woman by a dumpster. A Santa Clara County judge, evidently, saw Brock Turner the Stanford University swimmer, a promising freshman athlete ensnared by scandal.

In the end, the 20-year-old was convicted as a predator but sentenced as a swimmer. Probation recommended a year in prison. State guidelines called for at least two—14 at most. Judge Aaron Persky gave him six months in jail, with a chance of getting out in three.

“A prison sentence would have a severe impact on him,” Persky reasoned in court earlier this month. “I think he will not be a danger to others.”

The leniency of the punishment— rare in an age of mass incarceration— and that it favored an athlete already privileged by affluence and whiteness sparked public protest. The victim’s searing courtroom account of the January 2015 assault fanned the flame into moral outrage.

“You don’t know me, but you’ve been inside me,” she began her 7,138word statement, “and that’s why we’re here today.”

Those thousands of words, which pulled millions of people into her pain with their vivid detail, went insanely viral. Those words flipped the narrative. In the court of public opinion, if not in Judge Persky’s

chambers, justice was not served.

As if to complete Turner’s rebranding from champion swimmer to rapist, police released two mugshots after his June 3 sentencing, one taken the morning of his initial arrest and the other during his recent booking. Newspapers and TV stations swapped school photos of a cleanscrubbed and smiling all-American athlete with the watery-eyed deerin-the-headlights mug shots of a perpetrator caught in the act.

The Stanford case has become emblematic of what feminists call rape culture, a tradition that blames victims and normalizes male sexual violence and entitlement. It’s a culture that judges women by their past and men by their future. Throughout the trial, Emily Doe defended her reputation while Turner talked up his potential, his Olympic aspirations and blamed what his dad glibly called “20 minutes of action” on campus drinking and promiscuity.

The public directed their anger not only toward Turner but Judge Persky, a former prosecutor appointed to the

Rather than focusing on a limiting term such as “rape culture,” Kreeger wants to explore the broader idea of non-consent and how it teaches people from a young age that their identity privileges them to other people’s bodies. “[W]e are taught that … white people can touch black and brown women’s hair without permission,” Kreeger and fellow Stanford scholar Lily Zheng wrote in The Stanford Political Journal. “[T]hat cisgender people can bluntly ask transgender, gender-variant and intersex people about their genitalia.”

In the absence of education about sex and consent, latent entitlement can morph into unwanted advances.

Accounts that surfaced after Turner’s sentencing shed light on his upbringing in an affluent Ohio suburb, where families expect academic and athletic excellence from their children but hesitate to tell them “no.”

At Stanford, there’s a century-old tradition called “Full Moon on the Quad” in which hundreds of freshmen engage in a liquored-up free-for-all make-out session. Last year, Turner’s swim team tied new guys up with rope and wouldn’t release them until they swapped spit with a stranger. None of this absolves Turner of guilt, Kreeger says, but it puts him in context of the cultures that may have emboldened his sense of sexual entitlement.

Systemic neglect of sexual assault victims has turned the Stanford rape case into a flashpoint that may portend a shift in public attitudes. The 23-yearold victim—known anonymously as Emily Doe—told a probation officer that she didn’t want her rapist to “rot away in prison,” but she hoped for a harsher punishment than a “soft timeout” in local jail.

The Santa Clara County Bar Association, however, publicly defended Judge Persky’s decision.

“Judges have a duty to apply the law to the facts and evidence before them, regardless of public opinion or political pressure,” the association declared.

Public Defender Molly O’Neal—a vocal feminist with a college-aged daughter—joined the nonprofit in Persky’s defense. The verdict that confirmed Turner’s guilt, she says, has already vindicated Emily Doe. Not many would agree. For now it seems the real vindication in this case came outside the courtroom, in Emily Doe’s eloquent words that voiced the plight of other survivors.

Expected to coast to perfunctory reelection this fall unless a challenger steps up, Persky now faces an unofficial petition for his recall that’s racked up more than a million signatures.

Lawmakers joined the call to oust him.

“Judicial rulings like Judge Persky’s … discourage the reporting of these devastating crimes by reinforcing the fear that justice will not be served,” reads a letter to the California Commission on Judicial Performance signed by 13 state Assembly members. “[T]hey demonstrate that there are two systems of justice: one for people of privilege such as elite athletes, and one for everyone else.”

Salient points. But the growing demand to right this wrong raises important questions that have been reverberating throughout the legal community and at Stanford, where the conversation about campus sexual assault has reached a fevered pitch.

Does justice equal punishment?

Should a judge lose his or her job over an unpopular ruling? Would a recall undermine the constitutional provision for judicial independence? How can victim advocates channel the intense interest in the Stanford case to teach people about consent? What about cases in which the victim is something other than a cisgender woman? What about cases with several more shades of gray?

At Turner’s alma mater, where the U.S. Department of Education tallied 26 reported rapes in 2014, a group of victims launched an online petition for the school to publish the names of students found guilty of sexual assault.

The campaign has drawn backlash, some from other victims. Erika Lynn Kreeger, a 23-year-old rape survivor and trans student at Stanford, has been trying to foster a more nuanced dialogue among peers about sexual crime, punishment and consent.

“I’m very deeply horrified by what Brock Turner did,” the earth science major tells Metro. “But I’ve been very disturbed by how people are talking about this in ways that absolve everyone else from blame. We’re further entrenching this idea that some of us are incapable of harm and others are scum of the earth who do these horrible things and need to be locked up. In reality, the vast majority of us live somewhere in between.”

Omar Mateen’s murderous rampage at Pulse nightclub left 49 dead, 53 wounded and the nation reeling in grief. President Obama called Sunday’s attack—the deadliest mass shooting in the nation’s history—both a terrorist strike and a hate crime against the gay community.

Outside of City Hall, people embraced under rainbow flags billowing in the wind. Local leaders spoke from a makeshift stage while people wrote their reflections about the tragedy on a banner.

“It’s just heartbreaking and devastating,” Nancy Palmer Jones, a minister of the First Unitarian Church in San Jose, told the gathering. “It

affects so many people, not just the LGBTQ community but also the Latino community because it was Latin night at Pulse, and the Muslim community because there’s likely to be backlash and blame which is not deserved.”

Mayor Sam Liccardo shared his thoughts on how to move forward.

“This is our opportunity to help lift our community and lift Orlando beyond the pain,” he said.

Santa Clara County Supervisor Ken Yeager, the region’s first openly gay elected official, expressed shock and dismay over the massacre.

“I know that all of us have been struggling for so many years, and I think of all the progress that we made,” he said. “I think that was a kick in the gut for all of us and, I think, has made us more determined to fight back—because we have to.”

FULL HOUSE Napa Valley’s floor is full, leaving new vineyards nowhere to go but up in the hills.

I

N THE WINTER OF 2015, a Hong Kong real estate conglomerate purchased the Calistoga Hills Resort, at the northern end of the Napa Valley, for nearly $80 million. Today, mature oaks and conifers cover the 88-acre property, which flanks the eastern slope of the Mayacamas Mountains. But soon, 8,000 trees will be cut, making way for 110 hotel rooms, 20 luxury homes, 13 estate lots and a restaurant. Room rates will reportedly start at $1,000 a night and the grounds will include amenities like a pool, spas, outdoor showers and individual plunge pools outside select guest rooms.

Following the sale, one of the most expensive in the nation based on the number of rooms planned, commercial broker James Escarzega told a Bay Area real estate journal that the project “will be a game changer for the luxury hotel market in Napa Valley.”

That may well be true, but it’s likely not the kind of game changer that many Napa lovers want to see.

While the Napa Valley conjures images of idyllic winery estates and luxurious lifestyles, all is not well in wine country. A growing number of residents decry the region’s proliferation of upscale hotels, the wineries that double as event centers and the strain these put on Napa Valley’s water resources.

During the current drought, the city of Calistoga—like others—has been under mandatory water rationing. “We’re told not to flush our toilets,” says Christina Aranguren, a vocal critic of the proposed resort. Meanwhile, guests will be under no such restrictions. “I want to know where the water will come from.”

Other new developments will further strain the region’s infrastructure. The 22-acre Silver Rose Resort, across town from the Calistoga Hills Resort, will feature an 84-room hotel and spa, 21 homes, a restaurant, a winery and a six-acre vineyard. Last year, Calistoga’s Indian Springs Resort underwent a $23 million expansion and added 75 new guest rooms to bring their total rooms to 115. Northeast of Napa, in the rugged hills near Atlas Peak, vineyard developers have proposed removing nearly 23,000 trees to develop 271 acres of vineyards on the 2,300-acre Walt Ranch, which occupies a sensitive

watershed above the city’s most pristine reservoir. A decision on the project is expected later this summer. Elsewhere in Napa Valley, about 40 new and modified winery projects, and about 30 new vineyards, await county approval.

“We’re in the middle of a business war,” says St. Helena resident Geoff Ellsworth, a member of Wine and Water Watch, a wine industry watchdog. “This big corporation is competing against that big corporation, and the collateral damage are the citizens and the flora and fauna.”

The frontlines of Napa’s battles are the hillsides that rise from its narrow

valley, which is maxed out with grapes.

The situation leaves new or expanding vineyards with only one place to go: up. While the hills are zoned for agriculture, critics says converting them to vineyards threatens both groundwater and the Napa River, the 55-mile waterway that runs the length of the valley and provides essential habitat to several imperiled species.

“It’s just been a death by a thousand cuts,” says Angwin’s Mike Hackett, an organizer behind a contested ballot initiative aimed at reining in hillside vineyard development. “The cumulative impacts of this have not

been felt until water became an issue.

Now everybody is concerned.”

Napa winegrowers are already subject to some of the toughest hillside and vineyard-conversion regulations in the state, but enforcement has been inconsistent and new projects keep emerging. The Napa River, notes San Francisco attorney Thomas Lippe, who successfully sued the county in 1999 over hillside vineyard development, “hasn’t improved. The valley’s groundwater resources are continuing to be stressed. And there’s a continuing loss of biodiversity.” As for county regulators and vineyard

developers, he adds, they “just don’t want to deal with it.”

until Prohibition. The family lived in a storybook Victorian home surrounded by a kitchen garden and vineyards that brush up against—but do not climb— steeply rising hills.

Alexander Eisele, Volker’s son and now the manager of the family’s vineyard and winery operations, remembers his father gazing at those hills and asking, “Why is it so beautiful here?” And then Eisele answered himself: “Because the land hasn’t been destroyed. It doesn’t have houses on it.” But Eisele knew that situation might not hold. Fearing that Napa’s fertile farmland might go the way of the prune orchards in Santa Clara County—now Silicon Valley—he threw himself into land conservation efforts that would extend the protections of the ag preserve above the Napa Valley floor.

Fifty years ago, when the preserve became law, cattle were Napa’s most valuable agricultural product. Grapes covered only about 12,000 acres. And while many farmers, developers and some winemakers originally considered the preserve overly restrictive, they eventually came to embrace it. Of

course, agriculture in the region has changed radically in the intervening years: today’s cattle operations are economic footnotes compared to the mighty grape. According to the Napa Valley Vintners trade group, the wine industry and related businesses in 2012 contributed more than $13 billion to the Napa County economy and provided 46,000 local jobs, making it the area’s largest industry by far (wine-related tourism brings in more than $1 billion). Today, vines sprawl over 45,000 acres of the valley, which contains approximately 475 wineries.

Napa’s ag preserve originally protected 26,000 acres; today, it’s close to 40,000. The preserve successfully confined residential and urban development to the cities, and it received further protection in 1990, when Eisele—fearing that developers could one day undo these limits— helped to pass an ordinance that requires two-thirds of county voters’ approval for any proposed land-use changes within the preserve. But in what some locals consider an end-run

around this law, called Measure J, the Napa County Board of Supervisors has in recent years made small but critical changes to its general plan, expanding the definition of agriculture and wineries. Now, land set aside for ag can host more marketing and sales activities, more food-and-wine dinners, more tours, business events, weddings and even jousting tournaments. The increase in commercial activity adds noise and traffic to rural areas, and it strains the integrity of the preserve.

“We’ve lost the idea of what the ag preserve was,” says Norma Tofanelli, a fourth-generation farmer and the no-nonsense president of the Napa County Farm Bureau. “It was about saving land. It has nothing to do with wineries. [But now] our general plan elevates many urban uses to the same level of agricultural uses. That puts tremendous pressure on ag land, and ultimately we will lose it.”

But for 40 years, the Environmental Protection Agency has classified the waterway as “impaired” by excessive levels of pathogens, sediment and oxygendepleting nutrients like nitrates and phosphates, which are discharged from wastewater treatment plants and run off of cattle ranches and vineyards. The nutrients have spurred excessive algal growth. The algae choke the river and reduce the level of dissolved oxygen, which is critical for salmon, steelhead trout and other species. While the river is cleaner than it once was, and some riparian habitat has been restored, the feds still consider its steelhead population threatened and its Chinook salmon endangered. As for the native coho salmon? Extinct since the 1960s.

In recent years, the state has limited three Napa Valley cities from discharging treated wastewater into the Napa River during periods of low base flow, a directive that has helped improve water quality to the point where the San Francisco Regional Water Quality Control Board in 2014 recommended lifting its “impaired” classification for nutrients. The board is also preparing its first-ever erosioncontrol rules for agriculture, with a draft environmental impact report expected this summer.

Chris Malan, Napa County’s most ardent environmentalist, has been working to improve the river for decades. In the early 2000s, she

donned a snorkel and mask to survey creeks in the Napa River watershed for steelhead. In her run this year for a seat on the Napa County Board of Supervisors she called for a moratorium on new wineries in Napa County. Her platform did not endear her to the wine industry and she failed to make it past the June 7 primary.

Malan welcomes the state’s new ag-related erosion-control rules, and she gives credit to winegrowers who have worked with the county and state to implement best-management practices on their property. But she strongly opposes delisting the river for nutrients because many of its tributaries are still often choked with algae—a point she made to the water board by presenting video footage of Tulocay Creek, a major tributary of the Napa River. “You couldn’t see the surface of the water,” Malan says. “It was covered with a green mat of algae for as far as you could see.”

Malan says nutrients from vineyards have gone unregulated and must be brought into compliance.

“We have to hit the pause button,” she says. “We’ve got to figure out how to get this right, because it’s just not okay to kill all the fish and have people drink polluted water.”

Arcata-based fisheries biologist Patrick Higgins, who has worked on steelhead and salmon restoration for 20 years, also opposes the water board’s recommendation to delist the river. The ongoing drought, he says, plus illegal water diversions

Water temperatures are rising and fish populations are trying to hang on, he says. “Steelhead trout now inhabit less than 20 percent of their former habitats in the Napa River basin because of flow diminishment,” he wrote in comments to the water board. Those fish, he said, “will go extinct if more decisive action is not taken.”

Shortly before he died from a stroke at the age of 77, Eisele shared a glass of wine with Mike Hackett. “We took care of the ag preserve, and now we need to take care of the ag watershed,” Eisele told his friend, referring to the valley hillsides and creeks that drain into the river. “There are more very wealthy people and corporations coming into the valley, and they are not interested in the environment.

They are only interested in the expansion of their vineyard properties, and the only place left [for them to go] is in the ag watershed. So watch out.

Trees are going to start coming down.”

Hackett remembers this talk with his conservation mentor as a call to action, the impetus for crafting a ballot measure called the Water, Forest and Oak Woodland Protection Initiative.

The initiative aims to protect the Napa River watershed by tightening restrictions on deforestation, which reduces a hillside’s ability to store groundwater. Without trees to impede it, rain sheets downhill, erodes stream banks, and dumps sediment into the river, degrading fish habitat.

Though supporters gathered more than 6,000 of the 3,900 signatures required to place it on the ballot in November, the county counsel’s office rejected the initiative on a technicality June 10, just four days after the registrar of voters qualified it for the ballot.

Attorneys with Shute, Mihaly & Weinberger, the law firm that drafted the initiative, plan to file suit on behalf of its proponents. The firm also drafted and defended appeals to Measure J up to the California Supreme Court.

“We believe that county counsel’s opinion is dead wrong, and that the county acted illegally,” says Robert

“Perl” Perlmutter, attorney with Shute, Mihaly & Weinberger. “In our experience, the county’s arguments are those that are typically made by special interest industry groups opposing land-use measures and that the courts have rejected.”

If the initiative is ultimately adopted, developers of new vineyards would be limited to removing no more than 10 percent of oaks from hillside parcels and prohibited from removing most timber within 150 feet of large streams or wetlands. (The state’s proposed erosion-control regulations, now under review, would create best management practices for existing vineyards, while the county’s oak woodland initiative would protect hillsides before they’re converted or re-planted to vines.)

History reveals not only the need for such protections, but for better enforcement and significant penalties as well. In 1989, heavy rains sent tons of silt from a new vineyard on Howell Mountain into the Bell Canyon reservoir, fouling the main drinkingwater source for St. Helena. In response, the county enacted a first-ever erosion control ordinance. But eight years later, the Pahlmeyer winery cleared a hillside without a permit. The incident didn’t cause similar erosion and might have gone unnoticed if the property hadn’t been visible from the hillside home of environmentalist Malan.

With the help of the Sierra Club and attorney Lippe, Malan successfully sued the county, Pahlmeyer and other wineries for failing to properly evaluate the environmental impact of vineyard projects. Now, all vineyard developments are subject to public review under the powerful California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA).

Still, proponents of the Water, Forest, and Oak Woodland Protection Initiative don’t believe that CEQA and county regulations will adequately protect the region’s fragile hillsides from projects like the Walt Ranch. Last April, Joy Eldredge, manager of the city of Napa’s Water Division, submitted a withering critique of the project to the county planning department. The project’s environmental impact report, she wrote, failed to demonstrate that it won’t adversely affect the Milliken Reservoir, the city’s highest-quality water source. As the recession recedes

and crowding on the valley floor sends vineyards uphill, she predicted, the quality of Napa’s drinking water would decline as its cost rose.

As evidence of what can go wrong, Eldredge points to the city’s other drinking water supply, the Lake Hennessey reservoir. Unchecked fertilizer runoff from upstream vineyards has increased Hennessey’s phosphate and sulfate levels, which have spurred algal growth. The nutrients have also quadrupled the utility’s cleanup costs, which include treating the water with algaecides and chlorine. Unfortunately, this process can also generate byproducts called trihalomethanes, which have been linked to an increased risk of miscarriage, bladder and rectal cancers.

“Caught between long-term trends of increasingly stringent drinking water quality standards on one hand, and increasing county vineyard development approvals on the other,” Eldredge wrote, “the city and its water customers end up bearing the burden of degraded water quality from vineyard development and the need to carry out costly

drinking water treatment upgrade projects. The county should prevent the shifting of vineyard development impacts onto the city and its public drinking water customers.”

So far, the cost of treating Lake Hennessey water has not been passed on to customers, but if Lake Milliken were to be tainted by vineyard runoff, Eldredge says, rates would rise to cover the cost of new treatment infrastructure.

The Walt Ranch project will, like other hillside vineyards, employ runoffand erosion-control systems: engineers will dig on-site retention ponds to hold stormwater, then pipe that flow to nearby creeks. But Lippe says those erosion control methods—which conform to a county ordinance—are fundamentally flawed. Yes, the ponds and pipes can control erosion on the vineyard property and those directly below it, but when that water shoots from a pipe under high pressure offsite, it undercuts streambanks, erodes streambeds and stirs up sediment.

The county, says Lippe, “simply hasn’t adjusted its runoff calculation models to account for how water behaves once

Walt Ranch developers Kathryn and Craig Hall—who moved to the area from Texas, where Craig Hall made his fortune in real estate and was once a part-owner of the Dallas Cowboys—defend the integrity of their project and their commitment to the environment. Their vineyards boast organic certification, and their St. Helena winery was California’s first to win LEED Gold certification.

According to its environmental impact report, the project’s erosion-control system will reduce the current flow of sediment off undeveloped land into Milliken Creek by 43 percent, and level spreaders and rock aprons will disperse and filter stormwater ejected from the ranch’s pipe outlets. “We have a good project,” says Mike Reynolds, president of Hall Wines. “We are following the directions of the scientists and the county.” The Halls also promise to remove less than 10 percent of the property’s trees—whether or not the initiative passes—and mitigate that loss by planting trees elsewhere on the ranch and permanently protecting 551 acres of woodlands.

To Stuart Smith, a vocal property rights defender who has owned SmithMadrone Vineyards & Winery, in the western hills above St. Helena, since 1971, the oak woodland initiative is a solution

in search of a problem. If passed, he says, it would force him and other growers to apply for costly permits when they expand or replant their vineyards. Napa Valley winegrowers already face plenty of regulation, he says. Any additional requirements will only serve to drive out small, family-owned wineries like his, leaving only big or corporate-backed wineries—the very operations that “gloom-and-doom environmentalists” rail against. “It’s already happening,” Smith says. “The billionaires are driving the millionaires out.” And if the initiative passes? “My chainsaws are going to be running,” he says. “I’m not going to let these yahoos do this to me.”

Ted Hall, the president and CEO of St. Helena-based Long Meadow Ranch, a winery and diversified farm with 2,500 acres in production in Napa and Humboldt Counties, calls the proposed initiative an anti-farming ruse cloaked in environmentalism. No science backs up the oak woodland initiative, Hall claims, and it could even result in the removal of more non-oak trees and more hillside home development when vineyard-planting and other ag uses become too costly and difficult.

Like many businesspeople, Hall (no relation to Kathryn and Craig Hall) prefers voluntary stewardship to top-down regulation. In 2002, he and a coalition of the wine industry,

Because he was a landowner, a winemaker and a member of the Farm Bureau, he moved in many different circles, making allies who helped him shape and promote important conservation legislation. But it’s not clear now who has the stature to protect Napa Valley’s remaining natural areas from the wine juggernaut.

Napa Vision 2050—a coalition of more than a dozen civic and environmental groups that advocates for responsible planning—is pushing hard against the status quo. Many of its members, plus scores of other volunteers, helped collect signatures for the oak woodland initiative. But the valley's wine trade groups have united in opposition to its protections, as has the Farm Bureau.

Whatever the outcome of the initiative, Napa Valley’s success as a winegrowing and tourism powerhouse has been, as the commercial broker quipped to the media, a game-changer.

Exactly how residents reckon with these changes will define the valley in the months and years ahead. It is a reckoning the prescient Volker Eisele saw coming. “That this could change rapidly, to this day, human beings have trouble believing,” he told an oral historian in 2008.

Harmful development, he said, “can happen more or less overnight if you allow it.”

the Napa County Farm Bureau, environmental groups, and state and local government initiated a program called Fish Friendly Farming certification, which teaches property owners in the Napa River watershed how to reduce bank erosion and flood damage, improve fish habitat and reduce sedimentation. While critics say the program, now called Napa Green, allows for certification after harmful grading and tree removal have already taken place, it does teach best practices in sediment control, and program leaders claim it has substantially reduced the flow of nutrients and sediment into the watershed.

According to Ted Hall, more than 40 percent of Napa Valley vineyards have been certified under the program.

Truly a local institution, San Jose Taiko is bringing an improvisational rhythmic performance to the San Jose Museum of Art. Part of the SJMA’s Third Thursday series, the show will complement a current exhibit by the Japanese artist Tabaimo, who has prepared a series of room-sized animated installations. Tabaimo is known for her surreal reflections on modern Japanese society. Clicking through R&B singer Rayven Justice’s impressive bank of YouTube videos, one thing is clear: dude knows how to stunt. And though this Oakland vocalist’s lyrical content isn’t as sweeping and philosophical as as Frank Ocean’s, or as fascinatingly dark as The Weeknd’s, his laser focus on staying lit in the club is paying dividends. The Vevo clips for “Slide Thru” and “Hit or Nah” have each racked up nearly 1.5 million views. It’s little wonder.

Justice has a disarming grin, inexhaustible swag and an ear for slumping, psychedelic-syrup beats that toe the line between hyphy and just plain high. (NV)

Avant-pop outfit Bent Knee seem to be cut from the same cloth as a number of bands reigniting the jazz genre these days. No genres or influences are off limits, as the disparate sounds of pop’s current offerings are melded into a surprising and visceral whole.

Singer Courtney Swain moves between pensive and jazzy vocal passages, to shrieking heights over an unexpected maelstrom of musical elements. Signed to long-running experimental label Cuneiform, the band is a modern day Rock in Opposition group to keep on your radar. Expect an intimate performance at Art Boutiki. (MH)

The Aggrolites have become the modern day Wrecking Crew of reggae, backing up artists like rocksteady legend Phyllis Dillon, Culture singer Joseph Hill and Rancid singer Tim Armstrong. They also have a notable career on their own. The band plays with a tight energy that unites a lot of early reggae styles while still sounding current. There’s a considerable amount of grit to their sound, which is probably why they call themselves “dirty reggae.” And if you have a youngster, there’s a chance that they probably saw the Aggrolites perform surrounded by bananas on Yo Gabba Gabba. Rage On Stage TURNT UP ’20S Based on Joseph Moncure March’s envelope-pushing narrative poem, ‘The Wild Party’ is for mature audiences only.

SJ Stage ends season with a raucous production of ‘The Wild Party’

HE SAN JOSE Stage Company’s newest production, The Wild Party, is a musical quite unlike anything you’ve ever seen, unless you’re a regular at old-timey burlesque parlors.

As the curtain goes up, soft, breezy jazz trickles in through the house speakers—setting the mood for the rest of this historically controversial story. The stage is nearly circular, a round opening of black and white marble floors in front of a bed, a bar and a bathtub.

This musical adaptation by

composer Andrew Lippa is based on Joseph Moncure March’s famously transgressive 1928 poem of the same name. Originally banned upon its publication, March’s poem gives The Wild Party’s musical adaptation its gritty, gin-soaked roots. It is said that the piece inspired William Burroughs (of Naked Lunch fame) to write.

The show opens on Queenie (played

by Allison F. Rich), a young and sultry girl who laments finding a man who can fulfill her desires. Enter Burrs (Noel Anthony), a brutish vaudeville clown (complete with the red nose) whose sexual appetite is equally insatiable.

At first they seem like the perfect match—yet Burrs soon reveals his true, and violent, nature. Seeing no escape, Queenie throws a party as a last resort. But as soon as the

festivities commence, Burrs is already openly flirting with another woman, leaving Queenie even more ashamed.

With the arrival of her old friend Kate (played by Courtney Hatcher) and her handsome date Mr. Black (Carmichael Blankenship), Queenie conspires to steal her friend's man in an attempt to get back at Burrs. Little does she know that Kate has similar designs. From there, the party rages on, attractions flare and the carefree hedonism turns into something much more sinister. Like all good stories set in the Roaring ’20s, The Wild Party ends with a murder, and in this case it’s especially satisfying.

The musical’s overall vibe might be described as a punchy blend of The Music Man and Who Framed Roger Rabbit, with some extra strip show raunch thrown in for good measure.

The tunes are arguably a supporting character in this multifaceted romp.

Jazz, swing, two-step, big band, ragtime, blues, scat—take your pick.

At least three separate genres appear together in each medley-like song.

And though most of the songs are

almost encyclopedic in their scope, they are organized radically—with multi-part harmonies eclipsing thick electric guitar riffs and interesting vocal experimentation. There isn’t much spoken dialogue here, leaving the songs to cover much of the plot points, particularly when introducing characters and their motives. And the songs don’t just play story catch-up, some almost blow the house out before falling on a pin drop. It’s a sign of an impressively tight organization and direction on all fronts.

Equally impressive is how the main characters seem to dissolve back into the fold of the ensemble and then jump out again with fluidity—and how each of the different singing styles and tones match the characters' respective personalities. Carmichael Blankenship as Mr. Black has possibly the most unique voice relative to the more bohemian, ragtime-y styles affected by a majority of the cast. It's deep and rich, and serves as an effective symbolic counterpoint to the understated but conniving Burrs.

Meanwhile, Noel Anthony as Burrs is creepy, demanding, yet understated in all his aggressive scheming—with eerily lucid vocals to match. Allison F. Rich really shines as the seductive but equally unnerving Queenie. She’s brassy and ferocious with a voice to match. There is considerable difficulty in her vocal performance, especially in the varied vocal styles—often occurring in the same song—yet she never falters.

Other notable performances include Theresa Anne Swain as the sardonic, one-line dropping lesbian friend, Dolores, and Mike Birr as the wolfish but hilarious Eddie.

If easily offended, The Wild Party might just leave you scandalized. It’s loud, unabashed and crass—almost bordering on the obscene. And that’s just the dialogue. Otherwise, it’s hard not to at least blush, if not be titillated by the innuendo-rich performances and compelling plot.

San Jose Stage Company’s rendition of The Wild Party has a refreshingly modern feel without losing the decadence of the Roaring ’20s. It is brash, frenetic, and downright hilarious.

GOOD FIT Royalty Hightower’s powerful portrayal of Toni brings gravity to ‘The Fits.’

Excellent cast, striking debut performance anchors ‘The Fits’

A

NNA ROSE HOLMER’S directorial debut, The Fits, feels a lot like Creed—a.k.a. Rocky VII—with all the nonsensical commercial movie parts stripped out. This avant garde, long-take, wide-screen view of a young girl training to be part of a dance team avoids the well-trodden path; it’s not “empowering” in the athletic shoe-commercial sense.

Toni is an undersized, 11-year-old girl who wants to join the “Lincoln Lionesses,” a local dance team. She’s played by the remarkable, young and richly named Royalty Hightower, while the Lionesses are portrayed by the Q-Kidz, a step group from Cincinnati’s West End. Little and silent, Hightower doesn’t weigh 90 pounds, and yet she has tremendous gravity. Almost all synopses of The Fits refer to Toni as a “tomboy,” but really she’s an athlete first and foremost: she wears a perpetual game face and keeps her hair tied back in two whiplike braids. Toni has to shake off the nickname “Guns” because of her biceps.

Toni is training hard from the

beginning; we first see her head bobbing into the frame as she counts her sit-ups and spars in the ring with her boxer brother. Yet Toni isn’t the hunted, monomaniacal machine we expect from all the urban sports movies we’ve seen.

Holmer gives Hightower’s Toni time to rest, uttering a theatrical sigh as she lays her head on the boxing ring’s rope.

This driven girl gets the encouragement every budding dancer needs—“You’re not the worst,” says her easygoing friend, Beezie (Alexis Neblett), who is even smaller than Toni. By degrees, the two girls start to be affected by a series of epileptic fits striking down the Lionesses one by one. It’s a mystery no one can solve: “It hasn’t happened to any of the boys,” Toni says. “Yeah, but we’re not them,” Bianca replies.

Given the situation in Flint, Michigan, we can believe the suggestions the movie makes, that it’s the tap water, or perhaps lead plumbing in the youth center. But

the crisis never gets louder than the muted, behind-closed-doors arguments at a community meeting, or a television newscaster’s reports.

Strangely, Toni begins to long for the experience of one of these epileptic attacks, perceiving it to be a mystery of adulthood. Out of the hospital and back with their fellow dancers, the girls describe what happened to them in very different ways. It’s personal to each one of them. And there’s a theory Bianca has about the epidemic of fits: “Maybe it’s a boyfriend disease.”

Cinematographer Paul Yee made the most of a short and inexpensive 20day shoot; he’s captured the radiance of the cast, as in a night scene where Toni and Beezie sneak in to try on the spangly dance uniforms in a dark storage room, their faces illuminated by cellphone glow, the reflection of the gold costumes making their skin gleam.

And there’s subtlety—tentativeness, really—in the free jazz soundtrack by Danny Bensi and Saunder Jurriaans.

One could think of The Fits as an all-ages movie, but only in the sense that The 400 Blows is about children.

Holmer leaves the viewers with questions about the malady striking these young dancers, but she avoids the typical finale of a dance movie— the big het-up competition with some nearby rival school. And she dispensed with the easy contrast of lithe bodies with rough home lives.

What makes a ghetto isn’t violence, but the constant possibility of trouble.

A frost of cold warning chills The Fits; a sense of danger that never explodes into urban melodrama.

The precariousness of Toni’s dreams is symbolized by one of her regular roosts, a skinny pedestrian bridge over six lanes of speeding cars. It’s Toni’s “top of the world”—as in the last shot in Mike Leigh’s High Hopes (1988) where the North Londoners climb to a roof to survey their bleak kingdom.

In one moment, Toni is in a park in late spring, looking up at the sky to see a few turkey vultures watching her.

When you show the vultures circling overhead a ghetto, you’ve been honest enough; you don’t need to show them landing and dining.

Now Playing ALICE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS

Kids who somehow have a good time at this soulless film are never going to get the same pleasure out of the Lewis Carroll original, expecting it to have the same relentless, badtelevision-Christmas-special plotting, and Transformers-like robots. If the digital color is more bright and modulated than it was five years ago in 3-D, so much of what’s done here is something used before: from the backdrops of waterfalls and pink Maxfield Parrish clouds, to the meshing and turning of mammoth gears in Time’s fortress. It’s all as flat as the repeating backgrounds from a Hanna-Barbera cartoon. In the wrong hands, prequels strip all the fascination out of tales of enchantment. They explain everything you wanted to suppose about. Every character here is diagnosed and instructed in good behavior. This movie takes the curiosities of Wonderland and turns them into a plasticized theme park. (Valleywide.) (RvB)

CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR

Playing the noblest American of them all, Chris Evans is easy to underrate. As in previous installments, Captain America: Civil War shows the WWII hero, frozen and revived for our complex times, as a touching and skeptical immortal. Our captain could also be seen as a symbol of the U.S. government's unilateral actions in foreign affairs. It's the most expensive, entertaining movie anyone’s made about blowback. The question of what to do with “unlimited power and no supervision” isn’t just The Avengers’ problem, it's America’s. (Valleywide.)

THE LOBSTER

An Ionesco-like absurdist parable.

Some smooth yet totalitarian government of a near-future insists on coupling up its citizens. The sad-sack David (Colin Farrell) walls up at a rainy, clinical hotel where the residents get only a short time to find a mate for life. If they don’t, they endure some sort of mysterious reverse Dr. Moreau surgery that will turn them into an animal of their pick. (David chooses a lobster.) Greece’s Yorgos (Dogtooth) Lanthimos assembled an impressive cast for this speculative fiction tale, with Rachel Weisz as the love object David meets too late, and John C. Reilly (with an Elmer Fudd accent) as another forlorn intern. It’ll be loved and hated, sometimes by the same people. But it’s distinctive.

THE NICE GUYS

Los Angeles most foul, in that city’s most woebegone and smoggy era, 1977.

A pair of searchers team up: a morose, portly professional arm-breaker named Jackson Healy (Russell Crowe) and a snazzy, half-drunk private eye named Holland March (Ryan Gosling, sending up his too-cool-for-the-world persona in Drive). The two investigate a chain of deaths linked by a vanished girl with ties to the porn racket. Much of the film’s heart is provided by Angourie Rice, who plays March’s sassy but sweet 13-year-old daughter, Holly. She’s more or less the girl in the picture, since other female characters just drop by.

Rice is genuinely lovable, but director and co-writer Shane Black (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Iron Man 3) works her effectiveness hard: she teeters on the verge of precociousness. The rest of the cast displays believable attitudes of breeziness and aggressiveness, from a glacial Kim Bassinger, to some giggling psycho villainy by Beau Knapp. Black’s joke shop approach to the detective movie—with verbal squirt-flowers and exploding cigar retorts—works on its slick level, as Deadpool did. The limitation of Black, is his disinterest in deep stuff; when you start to hunger for something crunchy, he offers you a novelty peanut brittle can with the spring-snake in it. Sour, yet bracing, The Nice Guys doesn’t add up to anything beyond its satire of the post-Nixon, paranoid detective stories—it’s like a bright high school kid’s satire of Cutter’s Way. (Valleywide.) X-MEN: APOCALYPSE

It’s an alternate version of 1983.

From an ancient pyramid a god-like destructive force arises—a blueskinned deity (Oscar Issacs) who requires his own host of four demons.

The angry god augments the powers of a quartet of mutants, including Magneto (Michael Fassbender) who had tried to make a new life for himself as a steelworker in Communist Poland. Meanwhile Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) and the Xavier school try to figure out a strategy to stop the apparently unstoppable. Favorite mutants come and go, including Wolverine, at this point still known as Weapon X (Hugh Jackman), Psylocke (Olivia Munn), the worm-like Caliban (Tomas Lemarquis) who refers to himself in the third person, the pious Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee) and the speedster Quicksilver (Evan Peters, the loosest and least mannered of the actors here) upstaging the mosh pit as he did in this film’s predecessor.

DITZY FISH Everybody’s favorite scatterbrained tang is back and searching for her long-lost parents in ‘Finding Dory.’

A Tang-y Tale AS ITS OPENING act, this Finding Nemo sequel features a Pixar short called “Piper.”

The film is about a baby sandpiper coping with incoming tide. It’s so small and perfect that it makes what follows look sprawling. Otherwise, Finding Dory is a better film than its predecessor, with more narrative sophistication.

It’s an aquatic Memento, as the memorychallenged blue tang Dory (Ellen Degeneres does the addled fish’s voice) retrieves forgotten images of her childhood.

She seeks her long-lost parents off the coast of Morro Bay with an ever-worried Nemo and Marlon (voiced by Albert Brooks) in pursuit. Brooks’ job is to give the movie some salt, and maybe his best line comes with his frustration at the dithering Dory in a tank full of identical fish, seeking her mom and dad: “She should just pick two!”

What makes Pixar great is the way it always casts shadows behind its polychrome colors, contrasting a child’s conflicted urges for safety and adventure. The reefs are a riot of tropically colored corals and anemones, but the ocean now is dirtier, lined with more scrap and wreckage, and Dory gets netted in a set of plastic six-pack rings.

In the contrast of Dory’s memory deficit

and her difficulties as a young fish, one sees the plight of a generation, bracketed between children with learning disorders Finding Dory and their elders whose memories are slipping away.

PG; 105 Mins.

The poignancy should be Valleywide even greater, but appealing as she is, Degeneres is more like a trusted brand than an actress.

There are mercifully few fish-puns in the script: the young Dory is called “Kelpcake” and a character exclaims “Holy carp!”

But new characters speed the tale up to a terrific action movie climax along a coastal highway, with the aid of too-cute otters and a deranged coot who carries the cast in a skybucket full of water.

Studies of the intelligence and ingenuity of octopuses are born out in Finding Dory’s most dynamic character, an shapeshifting cephalopod named Hank (Ed O’Neill) who just wants to retreat from the ocean—“I have bad memories of that place”—to a nice safe aquarium in Cleveland. A master of disguise and escape, Hank may make octopus sushi too sad to eat, in the same way that Bambi made venison tragic.

Stanford Jazz Festival returns to The Farm for 44th year

S STANFORD University’s academic year winds down and the frantic buzz of student life peters out, a new sound is poised to emerge on campus. Mellow guitar riffs, staccato drum rhythms and smooth melodies will soon weave through the tall palms of Palm Drive, and waft up and over Hoover Tower.

For the past 44 summers, the Stanford Jazz Festival has taken up residency at the university, establishing itself as one of the longest running and most diverse musical gatherings in the Bay Area.

Founded in 1972 by saxophonist and educator Jim Nadel, the festival’s roots trace back to a jam session between Nadel and a few friends at the Stanford Coffee House. Over the years, Nadel’s jam sessions continued to grow—drawing a steady stream of top-tier players from all over the world, and eventually spilling out of the university’s cafe and taking to stages all over campus.

For nearly half a century, the

festival has hosted a wide array of internationally acclaimed jazz musicians. And the event’s accompanying Jazz Camp has served as the training ground for many young musicians—some of whom have gone on to pursue careers as professional musicians. There are even some who will return this year to take the stage.

The 2016 Stanford Jazz Festival boasts 26 performances over a sevenweek period. The event also features an instrument “petting zoo” for children, and a number of lectures and discussions on jazz instrumentation and style—including a free master class taught by Cuban saxophonist and percussionist Yosvany Terry.

The festival kicks off June 18 with Dianne Reeves at Bing Concert Hall. The five-time Grammy awardwinning artist will be flanked by her dual jazz guitar accompanists, Romero Lubambo and Russell

Indian violinist Kala Ramnath takes center stage at Dinkelspiel Auditorium on June 25 with tenor saxophonist George Brooks for an “Indian Jazz Journey”—a night of South Asian jazz fusion between two equally artful and imaginative musicians. Ramnath funnels the essence of the Carnatic tradition through her violin, playing along with Brooks’ melodic, brassy accents and putting a delightful twist on this classical form of Indian music.

Ambrose & Friends is slated for an Aug. 2 performance at Dinkelspiel Auditorium. The group is led by trumpet player Ambrose Akinmusire, a Stanford Jazz Workshop faculty member and alumnus whose more recent credits include an appearance on Kendrick Lamar’s 2015 Grammywinning To Pimp a Butterfly. Playing alongside his band—keyboard player Fabian Almazan, bassist Linda Oh and drummer Obed Calvaire—expect a night of genre-blending, narrative instrumentation and spoken word.

FIFTY YEARS is a long time for any relationship. When a marriage hits the half-century mark, the celebration is called a “golden anniversary.”

But when a band makes it through five decades—of living on the road, continuing to release relevant material, keeping up a unified public image and maintaining healthy interpersonal relationships—it’s a small miracle.

As such, Jeff Hanna, singer, guitarist and co-founder of The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, doesn’t resist too forcefully when music writers call his L.A.bred, folk-rock group “legendary.”

“We’re happy to embrace that when anybody wants to tag us with that moniker,” Hanna says with a laugh. Speaking over the phone from his home in Tennessee, the 68-year-old Hanna figures his band may actually have earned the title. And, at any rate, he is “thrilled and proud” to have made it this far.

“It is a significant milestone for anything—especially in this business. The highways are littered with debris of bands that didn’t last.”

The Nitty Gritty Hanna started the group with singer-songwriter and Dirt Band guitarist Bruce Kunkel in 1966 in Long Beach. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band began as a very “primitive” Jun 22, 7:30pm, acoustic-only folk outfit, Hanna says, recalling how $40-$70 he and his fellow band mates bonded over the work The Mountain of Americana legends, like Earl Scruggs and Maybelle Winery, Saratoga Carter, as well as surfing. “We were a surfing jug band,” Hanna says. “All of us were surfers.”

And when he says “all of us,” Hanna has a lot of names in mind. Bernie Leadon, a founding member of The Eagles, played with Hanna for a time.

And Jackson Browne was even in the band for a couple of months.

The band would go through multiple style changes through the years— picking up more electric instruments, taking a run at commercial country radio and then settling into a more straightforward rock & roll sound.

However, many know them for their sprawling, generation-spanning 1971 record, May the Circle Be Unbroken, which found Hanna and his cohorts— most of them under the age of 25—playing with their heroes, including Scruggs, Carter, Doc Watson, Merle Travis and more.

The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band play The Mountain Winery in Saratoga next Wednesday. Those who can’t make it out to the show—which Hanna promises will include songs the band hasn’t played live in more than 30 years—may be able to catch an upcoming broadcast of the PBS special the group recorded late last year. “Check your local listings,” he says.—Nick Veronin

WHO's Trying to Make San Jose Safer?

In December of 2015, the San Jose City Council passed several amendments to its Medical Cannabis program. These amendments allow collectives to freely exchange cannabis (without any proof of the source) and allow for manufacturing of cannabis products at off-site locations. These amendments further allow for cannabis profiteering and decrease the City of San Jose’s control over an already unregulated industry. MediMarts, a true closed loop, vertically integrated collective, submitted the following letter to the City Council before that meeting.

MediMarts Response to the City BACKGROUND MediMarts has worked with the city for several years now and we have worked to ensure that our business model conforms to the Ordinance. MediMarts and the City both want to enable the seriously ill citizens of San Jose access to a natural alternative to addictive and harmful pharmaceuticals. The finish line is near and the City should not alter course and enable unlawful entities to continue to operate illegally in order to collect revenue from what will soon be determined to be an unlawful tax. Law abiding “collectives” or “cooperatives” are still exposed to potential federal criminal prosecution because federal law prohibits any involvement with marijuana due to its current classification as a schedule 1 controlled substance. Therefore, it is imperative that the City’s program ensure that it is not creating additional risks. If the City accepts the proposed amendments it would be endorsing felonious criminal activities and the City would need to answer to the citizens of San Jose after it reinvigorates the commercial marijuana trade.

We commend the City and staff for writing and enacting the lawful process and overall regulatory scheme in all of California for legally operating closed-loop “collectives” or “cooperatives.” As the Mayor himself says “Medical marijuana is a complicated and constantly evolving issue that warrants time for an extensive discussion” and as a stakeholder that is probably the only true lawful “collective” operating in the City today we hope the City will engage with us for a more thorough analysis of this issue.

Good policy decisions have brought the City this far and where we are now, any step backwards would be a disservice to the public. If the City is truly concerned with the “black market,” and not the money stream collected from bad actors holding themselves out to be good ones, the amendments must be rejected. Nobody wants to abandon vertical integration (closed-loop) and these proposed amendments do just that, the City needs to understand that responsible lawmaking requires the ability to be cognizant of the practical reality and the flexibility to re-examine the facts.

RECOMMENDATION 1) The purpose of this memorandum is to clarify what is permitted by current state law, including the well known California Attorney General’s Guidelines and the current Ordinance. Current state law only allow entities recognized by state law to operate a medical marijuana entity; for-profit and retail entities are illegal. First and foremost thing staff should recognize this

fact and the reality that corporations, for-profit or otherwise cannot be in the medical marijuana industry. As such, the City should disqualify any and all entities holding themselves out to be anything but a member-owned collective or cooperative. The attached letter from the Secretary of State clearly explains that only a human being that either has a qualified medial condition, or is a primary caregiver to a person with such a condition, is permitted to engage in any medical marijuana activity.

2) Staff and Council also need to understand that anytime marijuana changes hands, it is “diversion” unless those hands are the patient members of the same “collective” or “cooperative”. “Diversion” is the primary evil that the Medical Marijuana Program Act and the San Jose Municipal Code aim to prevent. We can all agree that keeping medicine in the hands of the ill, and the ill alone, is of the utmost importance. Allowing transactions of a controlled substance to occur outside of the closed-loop lawful entities is illegal no matter how you approach or look at the issue. Moreover, supports transactions involving the black market and/or unqualified individuals. Supporting or authorizing any such unlawful activity is essentially aiding and abetting drug trafficking of a controlled substance. (see the Memo from our lawyer, Steve Horner) 3) Staff and Council must also understand that the “black market” or “underground market” are created by the consumer and their demand for marijuana medical or otherwise at a fair and reasonable price. In order to prevent a “black market”, we have to lower the price of marijuana so the demand and need for a “underground market” dissipates or diminishes until it disappears all together. Increasing the price of marijuana by enacting exorbitant fees, taxes, licenses, etc only makes it harder for lawful “collectives” or “cooperatives” to do just that (lower prices) and compete with drug cartels.

4) The MBT issue (U.S. Constitutional constraints on a de facto sales tax in a federally illegal commodity) is currently on appeal in the Sixth District of California and we are confident that the court will reverse the lower courts findings. As a result, the MBT will cease to exist as it is today. We are not against contributing to governmental oversight and administration etc but it must done carefully and lawfully.

We are also questioning the state’s new Medical Marijuana Regulatory and Safety Act (MMRSA) and challenging it in the highest courts. This will most likely put a hold on any and all laws related to marijuana “sales” and “profit” in all states and local municipalities throughout the nation. So until such time and the Federal Supreme Court issues a finding regarding “federal supremacy” when a state law directly conflicts with federal law (CSA) which clearly does NOT allow for the “sale” or “profiteering” from the controlled substance marijuana for any reason whatsoever we simply ask that the City refer only to the state laws regarding marijuana medical or otherwise as they exist today.

Historic San Jose Woman’s Club gets 3-D modeling for makeover

N A NEIGHBORHOOD characterized by stray drunks with open cans of Old English, the San Jose Woman’s Club building is a true gem. A gorgeous Mission Revival-style building on South 11th Street, the club rents out spacious areas for numerous events, banquets and concerts, in addition to hosting the club’s regular activities.

Inside, one finds a wealth of original stylings dating back to the 1920s: antique furniture, original Albert Solon tile work, wrought iron fixtures, sliding doors, heating coils, railings, door hardware, custom glass pocket doors and a sprung wood dance floor.

When I arrive, Brian Miller, another true gem, is toiling away outside, taping paper targets all along the perimeter of the building in preparation for 3-D modeling. As founder of a company called Pointz Taken, Miller focuses on historic preservation of San Jose landmarks via laser scanning. He does this in such a way that he can then supply architects and engineers with

a realistic walk-through 3-D model of the structure, so that they, in turn, can explore retrofitting ideas without having to visit the building over and over again. Miller has already covered the Peralta Adobe and the Rosicrucian Museum, laser scanning them for the same purpose.

Now he’s tackling the San Jose Woman’s Club, a building in dire need of air conditioning and future renovations. An accurate 3-D walkthrough model of the inner and outer components of the property can provide levels of detail not visible to the naked eye, allowing preservation to begin much sooner, before visible damage occurs.

Companies can then determine potential repairs and replacements more easily, as well as predict which parts of the building are concealing issues like broken pipes. In general, 3-D laser scanning is starting to

revolutionize the construction business as well as the historic preservation community.

Before I can ask Miller to tell me what’s going on, he buries me with rapid-fire verbiage and over-the-top contagious enthusiasm for what looks to be a killer project. Miller’s thriving passion for his job is infectious, and what’s he up to here on South 11th Street is a true Silicon Valley endeavor: an intersection of engineering, art, design and technology, but with a sincere passion for local history, which most technologists don’t usually have.

In that sense he’s a hero. He’s not some fetishist showcasing technology for technology’s sake.

Even better, Miller is a local. For years he operated the city department in charge of San Jose’s convention and cultural facilities, before Team San Jose existed. That was quite some years ago. Miller is now retired, but he harbors a near-giddy love for San Jose. What’s more, he uses hi-tech machinery to noble ends.

Best of all, this project includes high schoolers who’ve volunteered to assist in the process.

As Miller and I continue to inspect the historic property, two girls from Notre Dame High School’s robotics club arrive to assist him with laserscanning the building. During the process, Miller and the students will capture the exterior of the building via several different laser scans and conduct a preliminary scan of the interior. Afterward, the girls will take the scans and the data back to school, where they will apparently develop the 3-D model themselves. FARO Technologies has even donated a FARO 120 laser scanner and software just for this project. Everyone is working on a volunteer basis.

“I just want to document historic San Jose as much as possible,” Miller says while setting up the FARO 120 in the parking lot, adding that it will take about eight minutes for each single 3-D scan. He anticipates about 20 scans to cover the entire perimeter of the building. Since Miller has two teenage girls himself, he’s enthusiastic to pass on his tech knowledge to students at Notre Dame, who appear to be digging the experience.

“The girls can now take this technology and figure out how it applies to history, and how it applies to them,” Miller tells me. “And that’s what’s beautiful about it.”

South County restaurant, bistro Sweet Sicily sticks to tradition

PEN JUST FOUR months, Sweet Sicily in GIlroy has already garnered a cult following for its authentic Italian fare.

“This is the closest you can get to homemade, the way I was brought up,” says Matteo Ferrigno, a regular at the Italian coffee bar and bistro.

Italian is spoken freely. Chefs are in and out of the kitchen. There’s a lot of commotion. The place is modeled after an Italian-style bar, where patrons make a quick stop to grab a breakfast or step up to the counter to knock back an espresso. While Sweet Sicily serves food, manager Giuseppe Campagna says with conviction, “This is a not a

restaurant, it’s more of a bistro.”

It’s true, there are no traditional wait staff, no tables with white linens and wine glasses. However, the quality makes most guests forget all of that.

I spoke with chef and owner Saverio D’Anna, and while our conversation was a blend of English, pantomime and what little Italian I could fudge from my knowledge of Spanish, it was a pleasant, warm-hearted exchange.

Coming to the U.S. in November 2015, D’Anna, along with his partner, Leonardo La Placa, knew they had their location when they arrived at the quaint unassuming storefront in Gilroy’s Hecker Pass Plaza. They had to hustle to open by February, but preparing for a grand opening was nothing new for either of these gentlemen. Both have either owned or participated in the openings of several establishments throughout

Europe. D’Anna is modest company, but neither he nor La Placa are without bragging rights.

Together, D’Anna and La Placa founded the Association for Sicilian Pastry Chefs and Cooks, serving as president and vice president of the organization. Each, however, has a unique history in the culinary world.

D’Anna, who has no formal training, owned and operated a family business, the Bar Albatros, in his hometown of Palermo, where he began apprenticing in his father’s kitchen at 22. He has been fortunate to learn among such influential figures as Italian culinary master Francesco Paolo Cascino; the father of modern pastry, Chef Paco Torreblanca; French gourmet chef and recently appointed head of the new Chocolate Academy in Dubai, Philippe Marand; and one of the most recognized Italian chefs in the world, Nino Graziano, holder of two Michelin stars.

As a four-time finalist in the Grand Prix of International Pastry and three-time finalist in World Chocolate Masters, D’Anna has also received high accolades.

La Placa is also a native of Palermo as well as a graduate of CAST Alimenti Cooking School of Brescia in the Lombardy region of Italy. He has worked in chocolate pastry shops in Russia and Armenia. La Placa’s culinary and pastry expertise led him to develop products for multinational corporations such as Belcolade, a Belgian chocolate manufacturer; Distillerie Camel-Pasticceria; and Stramondo, all international providers for bakeries, confectioners and chocolatiers. La Placa also owned several businesses in Palermo, including two gelato and pastry bars.

Together, D’Anna and La Placa won the Guinness World Record for the largest cassatta, an italian sponge cake, weighing more than 1¼ tons. They also nearly won a Guinness World Record for the largest profiterole mountain, a hollowed pastry filled with creme and typically covered with chocolate. The duo and their team fell short of making the new world record by a mere 20 centimeters.

Standing at the bar enjoying a quick caffé, Matteo Ferrigno says he likes the atmosphere. “I feel like we’re in Europe,” he says. “And they make 100 percent authentic Italian Sicilian food.”

Some of the ingredients D’Anna and La Placa use are imported, such as their ricotta, which arrives at SFO in refrigerated cargo straight from Italy. This ricotta finds its way chiefly into their cannoli.

Everything served here is made fresh daily. They do sell some Italian staples like lasagna ($12.50) and ravioli ($18), but also have hot, madeto-order pasta dishes like Carbonara ($12), or their signature Sweet Sicily ($14), which includes mushrooms, pork, onions and garlic in a white wine tomato cream sauce served over a bed of fettuccini. D’Anna says they change up their menu every few weeks to keep things exciting.

Together, the partners have brought a small piece of Italy to the South Valley, and as the business name suggests, the menu is classic Sicilian cuisine.

“New Italian cuisine is good for the eyes,” D’Anna says, “but classic Italian cuisine is good for the belly.”

Atop both kabob dishes sat an extra side I’ve seen only in Persian homes: a crispy golden square fried in the bottom of the rice pan. Yummy.

Although I was already stuffed, I ordered Mirza Ghasemi ($6.99), a warm, smoky concoction of eggplant, spices and egg, which was a good OPEN vegetarian choice. Dark, floral tea ($2.50/person) arrived in a charming MIC NIG THUR pot with tiny glasses and sugar cubes. In hot weather, their Persian . 6-10P HT M yogurt drink is a great choice ($1.99, $3.99 and $5).

An almost indescribable treat, Persian ice cream with Faloodeh ($5.99) is not to be missed. The ice cream, thick and golden, sat on a nest of what looked like, but was not, thin noodles or slivers of coconut. I usually dislike dishes flavored with rosewater, but this delicate, melt-in-your-mouth treat awed me.

The lighting on the clear dish cast lavender and green circles on the plate, making it beautiful in both taste and appearance.
