I didn’t think anyone listened to radio for music anymore. Just news, weather and right wing talk radio.

I’d just bought a half-pound of fresh goat cheese made by some of my favorite goat cheese artisans when you blindsided me. “Do you love goats?” you asked. “My spirit animal,” I cheerfully replied. “Then don’t pay people to kill them!” you snapped back, handing me a leaflet with the headshot of a goat named Kiwana, which the flier noted had narrowly escaped death.

You then joined a throng of protesters chanting about how “animals have hopes and dreams, too.” Listen, I love animals—especially goats, which I hope will someday surpass cats in viral Internet fame.

I’m not sure if you know, though, that no goats were harmed in the making of my goat cheese. In fact, it was churned up on a small farm run by two Peruvian brothers. They moved to California a few decades ago, bought some land and became cheese-making legends using only milk from their own goats. They never use antibiotics or hormones and when their herd of about 80 goats comes down with a bug, they hire an herbalist to treat them with oils and tinctures. Seriously. Also, I found it odd that right after calling me out for my purchase, without a peep ya’ll marched right past a vendor shilling a $250 rabbit fur bikini, which dangled from a white awning over a heap of animal pelts.

THE FLY ODD COUPLE Every year on 4/20, marijuana lovers commune under a heady haze to observe the most hallowed date on their calendar. But in San Jose, things will get weird when the city’s Chuck Reed straight-laced former mayor, CHUCK REED, stands beside cannabis club execs outside of City Hall. The alliance was recently formed to denounce Measure C, a voter initiative slated for the June ballot that would replace San Jose’s nascent pot laws. The measure’s main backer, attorney JAMES ANTHONY, thinks San Jose should have as many pot clubs as Denver, which counts upward of 400. “It’s an invitation to the federal government to come back in and shut down dispensaries,” Reed tells Fly. COM would make San Jose the “marijuana capital of California.” Several pot clubs actually agree, though, which is why they’re forming the unlikely alliance with Reed, who spent half his time as mayor trying to regulate collectives to near extinction. The city’s initial attempt to cap clubs died by referendum in 2011 but succeeded in 2014. The number of dispensaries has since dwindled from 80 to 16 sanctioned by the city.

To come up to code, the “sweet 16” poured millions of dollars to build up facilities and pay sky-high licensing fees. After all that work, some of the clubs that once slammed the ordinance as draconian have become invested in its framework. As Anthony argues, “they’ve become part of the establishment.”

The Waldos, originators of phrase ‘420,’ find missing link to story

O SOONER has Waldo Dave settled into the cafe’s corner table, his back to the windows that separate the indoor tables from the outdoor patio, when a loud thud! behind his left shoulder startles him. He whips around to see Waldo Steve’s face smooshed up against the glass. The two men—both in their early 60s, friends of more than 45 years—laugh as Waldo Steve peels his face away and heads inside, leaving behind a drizzly April morning and a contorted imprint.

He grabs a chair, sits down and pats an envelope that contains 167 pages of officially embossed U.S. Coast Guard records. “This was the ultimate goal,” he says of the highly anticipated mail, which arrived three weeks ago but took years of searching to obtain.

“This is what slams the door shut on everyone who says that our story is a bunch of bull,” Waldo Dave says.

As the story goes, in the fall of 1971, “five wise-cracking friends”—Steve, Dave, Mark, Larry and Jeff, who called themselves the Waldos after a wall they hung out on between classes at Marin County’s San Rafael High School—were given a hand-drawn map to a secret patch of cannabis in Point Reyes. The crop had been planted—and the map leading to it drawn—by a Coast Guard

reservist named Gary Newman.

Newman, brother-in-law of Bill McNulty, a friend of the Waldos who gave them the map, was said to have been paranoid about getting busted for planting the cannabis on federal property. The Waldos were determined to find the patch.

Week after week, they planned to meet at 4:20pm at a campus statue of Louis Pasteur. They’d get high, jump in Waldo Steve’s 1966 Chevy Impala, listen to its “killer” eight-track stereo and head to the Point Reyes coast in search of the treasure.

“It was always like cub scout field trips,” Waldo Steve says of the group’s safaris. “Except we were stoned.”

The Waldos never found the patch.

But “420 Louis”—and later, simply “420”—became their secret code for pot. Today, the Waldos’ three-digit code has become mainstream universal slang for all things cannabis. Every year, April 20 (4/20), is the date of 420 festivals, 420 races, 420 Olympics, 420 college

The list goes on.

The Waldos, who describe their high school selves as intelligent, fit guys who were “seekers” rather than “stupid, slacker stoners,” live throughout Marin and Sonoma and work in fields ranging from financial services to independent filmmaking to the wine industry. Waldo Steve and Waldo Dave, the “talking heads” of the group, agreed to meet me prior to annual worldwide pot holiday to share their story. It’s a busy time of year for them.

‘If I can remember correctly, it was a group of high school kids who would meet at 4:20 to smoke. My mom told me that.’

“By the way, the Huffington Post just called,” Waldo Steve tells Waldo Dave as he flips through a heavy duty binder that contains hundreds of references to 420 culture in newspaper and magazine articles, from the New York Times, the L.A. Times, National Geographic, Time, Esquire and dozens more, records of dissertations on the sociological aspects of 420 and documented proof of conversations, handwritten eyewitness accounts, references to the marijuana map and copies of letters from the early ’70s—all supporting the Waldos’ claims that they were the very first people to use the term 420.

“Actually, we’re the centerfold in this one,” Waldo Dave jokes, pointing to a cover of Playboy.

The two men enthusiastically

exchange inside jokes, noises, secret words, one-liners and impersonations.

Their banter is a glimpse into the wild, adventurous world of the Waldos—intertwined with the beauty and the freewheeling counterculture of Marin in the ’70s. A golden era, they call it.

The Waldos don’t know what became of the map that revealed the Point Reyes cannabis patch. But “everything else” is preserved in a high-security bank safety deposit vault in San Francisco’s Financial District.

One letter, written by Waldo Dave and sent to Waldo Steve after he had left Marin for college, read, My brother is Phil Lesh’s manager, and last weekend I had a job as a doorman backstage at a concert. I smoked out with David Crosby and Lesh … p.s. A little 420 enclosed for your weekend.

Another letter, from a friend who had also left Marin and was living in Israel, informs the Waldos that there’s “no 420 here.”

“It was an original little joke that turned into a worldwide phenomenon,” Waldo Dave says.

CANNABIS CULTURE It’s 4:20pm in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, and puffs of smoke drift from groups of young people gathered on “Hippie Hill,” known among potheads as the place to light up. A drum circle provides a fast-paced, background beat, and an older guy dances, hands clapping above his head.

Next to a grove of Eucalyptus trees, three friends pass a joint around.

When asked what 420 means to them, the one with long, dark dreadlocks proves that he’s adopted the Waldos’ secret code as his own.

“Usually means it’s time to smoke,” he says with a crooked smile.

Do they know where the term comes from?

“If I can remember correctly, it was a group of high school kids who would meet at 4:20 to smoke,” says another. “My mom told me that.”

Dave recalls: “In about 1995 or so we started seeing ‘420’ carved into benches and spray painted on signs, and we said, ‘Hey, what’s happening here? This is starting to evolve. We’ve gotta start looking into this thing, you know?’”

He said to himself: “I better get the story straight.”

A phone call to High Times magazine—“the definitive resource for all things marijuana”—resulted in the publication’s editor immediately flying to California to meet the Waldos and verify their claims. Following the original 1998 article in High Times, the origin story of 420 spread to other publications, one by one. “I think after the internet became big around 2000, then it started snowballing,” Waldo Dave says.

Ever since, the Waldos have fiercely defended their version of events, agreeing to meet journalists at their vault, get on camera and trek out to Point Reyes. Waldo Steve counts the number of times they’ve documented their story in the thousands.

“People keep trying to twist the story,” Waldo Steve says, noting the naysayers “come out of the woodwork” each year to attack and discredit the Waldos, or claim to have coined the term “420” themselves.

“There’s so many of ’em you can’t keep track of ’em,” Waldo Dave says. “It’s pretty hilarious. We’ve created a whole generation of 420-claimers now.”

“It’s such a fabled thing,” Waldo Steve adds. “People want to be part of a fable.”

“We’ve had people saying they thought our story was a fairytale,” says Waldo Dave, noting their recent search for the Point Reyes Coast Guardsman who gave them the map. “So we said, ‘Hey—we’ll go find this guy. We may not be able to find him, but we’re gonna try.’”

THE MISSING LINK The search for Gary Newman began six years ago. It was never easy.

There were false starts, dead-ends, unanswered phone calls, unanswered letters and “no show” meetings in San Jose, where the Waldos had leads that the Coast Guardsman could be living.

“I was getting worried,” Waldo Steve says. “I was thinking, ‘God, this guy could die, and I’ll never get his side of the story.’”

More searching led to piles and piles of databases, and more deadends. Finally, the Waldos received a reply from Gary’s friend, Carol, who said that Gary most likely didn’t have

a permanent residence.

“Somebody had to get into the streets,” Waldo Steve says. He hired private investigator Julie Jackson.

“He said he needed to find a guy that was basically homeless,” Jackson says. “It was like a needle in a haystack.”

Although she had little information to go on, Jackson was fascinated by the history of the Waldos. She informed the San Jose Police Department about what she was up to, in case she needed backup, and created a perimeter map of where Gary might be located. She also started reaching out to people who might know him.

“Usually I don’t take cases like that,” Jackson says. “But this one was too good to pass up.”

THE PHONE CALL Months after getting ahold of Gary’s friend but not hearing anything, Waldo Steve was traveling in a Texas “ghost town” near Big Bend National Park. “Big thunderstorms,” he says.

“Cracks of lightning.”

He and his brother were the only people in a little emptied-out Mexican restaurant and saloon. “And

between cracks of thunder,” Steve says, “I get a phone call.”

The woman on the line said, “This is Carol, I’m Gary’s caretaker.”

What seemed to be a hot trail led to months of more unreturned phone calls, unanswered letters and no-show meetings. And then, suddenly, everything changed. There was a date, a meeting spot and a time. And Gary showed up.

“Gary, we’ve been looking for you for so long!” Waldo Dave yelled when he first saw him.

The Coast Guardsman who had played such a large role in the Waldos’ story, it turned out, was homeless and living on the streets of San Jose.

They paid for Gary to stay in a San Jose hotel during the Super Bowl, in part so he could watch the game, and interviewed him to make sure that all records and accounts matched.

“Gary had no idea what he started,” Waldo Steve says. “I thought it’d be better for him to show us everything.”

He rounded up the Waldos, Gary, Carol, Jackson, Patrick McNulty (brother of the late Bill McNulty), and headed out to the Point Reyes Lighthouse, where Gary had been stationed. In a short video made by Waldo Dave, Gary talks passionately about his time there.

The official Coast Guard records the Waldos sent away for—and received three weeks before our interview— describe a decorated, life-saving Coast Guardsman. Finally meeting him after 45 years, the Waldos say, was like a reunion with a relative they never knew. And through the kindness and generosity of someone who Waldo Dave would only describe as “having a heart of gold,” Gary is no longer homeless.

“And now we’re like some big, happy family,” says Waldo Steve, who hopes that the official Coast Guard records and Newman’s own account will silence the 420 naysayers of the internet.

Waldo Dave seems less optimistic.

“I don’t think it’ll be finished,” he says.

“There’ll still be people saying, ‘Oh, that’s not true.’ But you know, they’re entitled to their own opinions; we have the facts.”

At some point, Waldo Steve says, he may take some of their documentation to a museum or auction house that offers forensics to get an approximate date of creation.

Or, Waldo Dave says, “I guess we could find that missing roach from 1971, underneath the seat.” He motions that he’s holding up a roach.

“This is proof !”

The line forms at the back, where customers pick a bowl size, regular ($9.50) or large ($10.95), and a base of sushi rice, brown rice, chips—sushi nachos, anyone?—mixed greens or a blend of any two. A server fills our order with half brown rice, half greens. We ask for the smallest, a regular here, which comes with three scoops of raw fish. From a spread of yellowtail, mashed-up spicy tuna, shrimp, Ahi tuna octopus and

Next come the trimmings: mildto-hot soy-based sauce, sriracha, spicy mayo, imitation crab, vivid orange Masago eggs, avocado, seaweed salad ($1.50 extra), wasabi, dried seaweed, sesame seeds and pickled ginger.

“However you want to mix it up,” Nguyen says, motioning toward the spread of fresh seafood. “Pick a base, pick a seafood, and pick the toppings.

While some poke places marinate their seafood overnight, Nguyen says the Poki Bowl way means fresh fish each morning. He also favors thicker

The kind of complex preparation once found in the back kitchens of Napa’s Michelin star restaurants can be viewed from the counter of a converted Wienerschnitzel just off a freeway ramp, next to a Subway with a battery-operated parking lot mannequin rocking a sign.

This style not only values freshness, but also combats the most rampant problems in the American food industry. The National Resources Defense Council estimates that we throw out roughly 40 percent of our total food—$165 billion worth of alimentation that could feed the hungry, but which instead sits in landfills belching methane. The NRDC also estimates that California’s produce-importing habits cost the planet 250,000 tons of global warming gases per year— equivalent to 40,000 additional vehicles on the road.

Beyond the flavor and ecological benefits, fresh, locally-sourced restaurants help the area’s small businesses create a self-sustaining economic ecosystem. The growing number of “Mediterranean Chipotles” may number the days of restaurants where food is slid through a tiny window or over an opaque counter to a person whose principal job is to take orders, make change and hand customers a bag of packaged food. Millennials seem content to order and manage the business transaction on a touchscreen tablet, which makes room for a preparer at the counter who could even be a culinary school graduate, able to answer questions about sourcing and ingredients.

If the popularity of productionforward establishments is indicative of a movement, the feared robotization of the food industry may instead just relate to payment, while on-view human artistry becomes the signature of a new fast food revolution.

Point-and-eat ordering has several advantages. The food’s ready right away, so customers only wait in one line and skip the tip-related anxieties that come with waitstaff. Picky eaters can tailor meals precisely to their liking, so they won’t be disappointed by accidental additions or omissions.

Adventurous diners gain a quick way to sample. While blind-ordering an unfamiliar dish can be daunting (and expensive), front-of-house meal prep encourages people to get exactly what they want and get it right.

“A lot of our customers wouldn’t touch our Greek-style eggplant,” says Yaniv Benaroya, owner of GottaEattaPita. “So we just quickly slice a sliver of pita, throw some eggplant in there and hand it over. Before they even make their decision, they get to put it in their mouth and go, ‘Oh that is awesome, I want that.’ You’re able to instantly give them a taste, and that speaks for everything.”

Chipotle and others trained customers, he adds, “so there’s nothing foreign when they walk in.

They know exactly what to do.”

Bringing the kitchen from the back of the house to the front is a relatively new concept in the States, but the diversity of Silicon Valley and its cuisine has flipped tradition of all forms. Benaroya, for example, grew up in Israel and watched vendors load their carts with hummus, babaganouj, couscous, roasted vegetables, olives, tabouli and other ready-to-go favorites that diners would custom-combine into a meal that was hot, healthy and tasty. When he saw the Chipotle model take off, he mimicked what he’d learned in his childhood. “[We’re] kind of like the street food in Israel,” he says. “You walk right up and they throw whatever you want inside that pita and off you go.

That’s the way it’s been done since the beginning of time.”

On Meridian Avenue just south of 280, the Flying Falafel recently painted its A-frame blue, in part because the red and yellow legacy architecture continued to attract requests for cheese dogs and soft drinks, neither of which the vegan establishment serves. The duo indulge their fans with classicrock covers, rewritten in a sort of steel-pedal pastiche, which recalls everything that's great about country and folk music. ERNIE KRIVDA Thu, 8:30pm, Free Cafe Stritch, San Jose Cleveland is one of America’s forgotten musical hotspots. From Bone Thugs to Pere Ubu, it has always proven fertile ground for an eclectic range of music.

Tenor saxophonist Ernie Krivda represents that eclecticism, embodying the restless creativity of the Sixth City. His resume is almost a who’s who of late 20th century jazz. He’s played with Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Quincy Jones (after a personal recommendation from Cannonball Adderley) and Big Band pop artist Jimmy Dorsey. Krivda’s most recent release, 2015’s Requiem for a Jazz Lady, is an introspective post-bop journey into the living history of Cleveland jazz. (MH)

Fortunately, the cello, vibraphone and drum trio have come up with their own compound adjective to describe the music they play: worldmetal. If you want to know what that sounds like, check out the excellent music video for their song “YDKWH.” Reminiscent of Oakland’s cello, violin and drums trio Judgement Day, the Portlandbased Human Ottoman make pure art music, which makes them a great fit for Anno Domini.

The trio all bring their own voice to the project, play to each other, and see what comes up in the middle. (MH)

Don’t answer. The point is Clint Black did that. While he may not have the name recognition of ’90s country icon Garth Brooks, trust—the guy is huge. Coming Home THE PRODUCER A museum curator is a lot like a music producer, SJMA’s new curator Lauren Schell Dickens says.

HE NATIONAL GALLERY of Art in Washington, D.C. is one of the largest museums in North America. With an impressive collection and the vast resources of the federal government behind it, working at the prestigious institution is likely on many an art professional’s short list of dream jobs. However, according to Lauren Dickens, it’s not for her.

“The National Gallery is an internationally renowned institution with almost unmatched scholarship,” says Dickens, who recently left her position as curatorial consultant at the National Gallery to take over as head curator of the San Jose Museum of Art. “But it's such a large institution, I very much felt like a cog in the wheel there.” She says that the real draw of working at a smaller institution like SJMA is her love of working closely with artists.

“Artists imagine the world in a different way and they don't work that well when they're bound to bureaucratic time tables,” Dickens says. “At SJMA, in terms of working

with artists, we have an agility in being responsive to timely topics.

Border Cantos (a collaboration between photographer Richard Misrach and experimental composer Guillermo Galindo) is one example up right now.

That controversial topic (the U.S.Mexico border) is something a place like the National Gallery can't touch.”

In addition to being drawn to the intimacy of SJMA, Dickens says she is looking forward to returning to the Northern Californian life she grew up with. “I am from the Bay Area,” she says. “And as everyone from the Bay Area knows, once you leave, the goal is always to get back.” When she and her family left the East Coast in early April it was snowing. Since arriving in the Golden State, she’s been enjoying the warm, sunny weather.

Of all the applicants for the position, Dickens says she thinks she was selected because of her commitment to working in the community. “I think

what appealed to the director and the search committee about my work is that I'm very interested in community building and working with local audiences who are near the institution,” she says. “Art can really be a way of bringing people together in dialog in interesting ways. At the National Gallery, their audience is the nation.”

Dickens describes the job of a curator as similar to that of a music producer—taking the original work of a given artist, or group of artists, and helping to shape it into something that is not just moving, but also cohesive and marketable. “I work with artists to organize exhibitions around themes,” she explains. “I work with artists to create new work for specific audiences.

I also write and interpret that work to help the audience's access.”

Dickens intends to begin her work at SJMA by learning about the local community. “I need to get to know the people who live here,” she says— “the people in the Bay Area, which communities are already invested in the museum and which are not. And why not?” She recognizes that the people of Silicon Valley come from a variety of backgrounds and cultures. Because of this diversity, Dickens also recognizes that the scope of her curation will be local and, by necessity, international.

“You have a lot of people who were born and raised here,” Dickens says, “but you also have more people who have come to California, to Silicon Valley, from other countries.

Those are the populations that I am interested in. This is the new maturity of California.”

Looking back at her time in D.C., Dickens mentions working with the performance art of Iona Rozeal Brown.

Brown is known for blurring the normally strict lines of cultural and racial identity. In “Battle of Yestermore,” the artist combines principles of Kabuki and Noh with hip-hop.

“She staged this fantastic performance in the public space of the museum,” Dickens says, recalling Brown’s show. “We had a live DJ, backdrops and seven or eight dancers.”

This is what a curator like Dickens can inspire: art that brings different communities together under one museum’s roof. Although Dickens isn’t sure when her first exhibit will appear inside the SJMA galleries, SJMA patrons have something to look forward to in the bright energy that fuels her curatorial vision.

Operatic ’Desire’ OPERA SAN JOSE’S newest production is a clever reimagining of the classic Tennessee Williams play, A Streetcar Named Desire.

The show opens with a bare set, sparsely populated by smoking, greasy men.

Enter Blanche DuBois, who, after losing her family home, has come to New Orleans to stay with her sister Stella Kowalski in a two-room flophouse.

Little does she know that Stella has become a slave to her crude and vicious husband, Stanley. As she settles A Streetcar into her new life she meets Mitch, one of Stanley’s Named Desire kinder, gentler friends. But the environment is toxic, the men manipulative and Blanche is quickly swept up Thru May 1, $50into the mess. By the end of it all, Stanley's vicious and $150 violent actions leave Blanche in a fugue, teetering on California Theatre, mental collapse, and Stella even more of a captive.

San Jose The show is cast remarkably well, and features familiar San Jose Opera faces. Each of the characters' personalities are reflected and complemented by their different voices. Stella, played by Stacey Kappan, has a gorgeous voice, crystal clear but understated. Stanley Kowalski, played by Matthew Hanscom is cruel, crude and controlling with a bassy, commanding voice to match.

Kirk Dougherty’s warm tenor fits adroitly with the sympathetic character of Mitch Mitchell. But perhaps the standout role is Ariana Strahl as Blanche. Her powerful but sharp voice is as delicate as it is glassshattering. It is a high compliment to say that within minutes you have forgotten Brando, Leigh, Hunter and Malden's iconic film portrayals.

While A Streetcar Named Desire has an operatic structure, it feels far more informal in nature. This organization of what is basically a four-person story, also allows the cast to flex more of their acting muscles—with rewarding results.

HE SLIGHTLY OFF-kilter quality of A Hologram for the King is explained in the credits; it’s international filmmaking that doesn’t have a definite style or a center. Having avoided the candied nostalgia and thumpingly nationalistic conclusions of Dave Eggers’ source bestseller, director Tom Tykwer transforms this story into a slightly abstract study of a middle-aged man’s inexorable slide into obsolescence.

Stories like these—of American businessmen getting blindsided by new and unsympathetic markets— used to be all the rage. Secondhand bookstores were packed with knockoffs of The Man in the Grey Flannel Suit and Death of a Salesman.

These tales, as tired as they may be, are greatly aided by the warmth and trustworthiness of Tom Hanks.

Tykwer pioneered hypertextual cinema with 1998’s Run Lola Run; here he keeps things straightforward, with few flashbacks or other gimmicks, with the exception of a cartoonish dream sequence in which Hanks’ character, Alan Clay, acts out the lyrics of the Talking Heads’ “Once in a Lifetime.” Indeed, Clay lost his beautiful wife and his beautiful

home. And he has no idea how he got there.

This slipping salesman was cleaned out by a rancorous divorce. Alan’s daughter Kitty had to drop out of college because of the financial blowback. Alan’s father (Tom Skerritt, in a horrendously written, one-scene part) likes to remind his son that Alan was the exec who engineered the Schwinn outsourcing and layoffs. In short, Alan was the man who helped China corner the international market in bicycles.

Appropriately, Clay is hoping to resurrect his career in Saudi Arabia, where he is tasked with staging a presentation meant for the king of that oil-rich nation. He secured this last-chance job by flexing a personal connection: at a party, he made one of the princes of Saudi Arabia laugh with a dumb joke.

Sleepless and anxiety-ridden, Alan flies to the desert kingdom.

He is quickly whisked away to an

economic development zone way out in the dunes, where he spends his days working in a black tent next to a Potemkin village of halfbuilt skyscrapers and empty streets.

Hologram’s central symbol is a good one, especially tangy here in Silicon Valley. All the technology, energy, sales acumen and crucifying worry is centered on summoning an illusion—a holographic telecom system.

The project seems doomed. The King will show up when he feels like it. Alan knows so little of the Saudi culture that he tries to send out to room service at the Jeddah Hyatt for a cold beer. He doesn’t realize that businesses in a Muslim country would be open on a Sunday, or that poor people in an iron-handed, U.S.backed regime might be particularly sensitive to jokes about the CIA. Clay’s driver and sidekick, Yousef, makes the movie. Played by Alexander Black, an actor certainly destined for bigger projects, he’s about as Arab as Hanks. But he has a close resemblance to John Belushi and is immediately funny in every reaction shot. Hanks has never been that kind of funny as an actor. He’s light-heartedly funny. He’s wistful.

One winces rather than laughs.

Hungover from illicit moonshine, or recovering from a burst of panic in the middle of the night, Hanks looks as beat as he did under the white lights in his neglected film Joe Versus the Volcano. Frequently, Hologram plays like a good Mad Men episode, with Don Draper feeling his age and swallowing his moral corrosion in the name of a job and his family.

The other standout is Sarita Choudhury, the doctor Clay consults about a newly discovered tumor.

Chowdhury was director Mira Nair’s discovery in 1991’s Mississippi Masala.

Unaltered by facelifts, Choudhury has grown from a gorgeous if uncertain actress into a figure of maturity and eye-catching glamour. Her presence adds some relief to the anxiety.

Choudhury makes this movie less about Eggers’ lamenting the way capital fled America without even a thank-you note, and more of a hotweather vacation far away.

Now Playing ELVIS & NIXON A smidgen of a movie about December 21, 1970, the day when Elvis Presley (Michael Shannon) presented himself at the White House for volunteer duties as a “Federal Agent at Large” in the drug war to a baffled Richard M. Nixon (Kevin Spacey). In director Liza Johnson’s version, Egil “Bud” Krogh (Colin Hanks) and Dwight Chapin (Evan Peters) help seal the deal with two Memphis Mafiosi—Jerry Schilling (Alex Pettyfer) and Sonny West (Johnny Knoxville). Johnson glues the oddly-matched pair together through backstory; both the King and the President coming from very poor backgrounds, both vets, both with obsessive love for their mamas. The similarity ends there-- Elvis was on a swoon of numerology, with his eyes on a mystic horizon. Nixon exudes his usual Nixonian crapulence and awkwardness, seething over old snubs, uttering flatulent pieties mixed with out and out obscenities. In this movie about two singular and lonely men redeeming each other, you’d need two well-matched actors. With all deserved respect to Shannon, he’s no one’s idea of Elvis—gaunt instead of well-fed, weird and covert instead of beguiling. Nixon is a wonderful part for any actor, be he John Cusack or Anthony Hopkins. Spacey has the rancor for it, God knows—and there’s a trick Spacey does of slowly revealing himself. You don’t see him move from behind his desk until half the film is over. Director Johnson includes details that are supposed to reveal more about the big day, but it all seems to be non-sequiturs— nothing much happens. (Camera 12).

SOLD Patricia McCormick’s popular youngadult novel is the source for this clumsy awareness-raiser, a primordial melodrama about enslavement of rural girls in Calcutta’s houses of prostitution. (For a far more insightful and wider treatment of this matter, see the documentary this fictionalization is based on, Born into Brothels). Young Lakshmi (Niyar Sakia) seems to be the star of a Nepalese version of Heidi; her drunken stepfather indentures her to Mumtaz (Sushmita Mukherjee), a stout and sinister madam. Forced to drink drugged mango juice, Lakshmi is obliged to take on customers until she’s spotted in her cage-like window

by an American photographer (Gillian Anderson) working for the Hope House charity. Berkeley-bred director Jeffrey D. Brown transitions from pretty mountainscapes to hot lights and saturated colors for the bordello life. To be fair, not every moment is a downer: there are moments of dancing and friendship between the inmates. But the movie never misses a trick otherwise, from the feather of hope Lakshmi clutches as a souvenir from her mountain days, to the tearwringing reason for her suffering: “All I wanted to do was buy a tin roof for mama.” (Camera 12). APRIL AND THE EXTRAORDINARY WORLD Good enough in itself, highly recommended for steampunks and containing a smorgasbord of lively elements, April and the Extraordinary World is missing a certain quality that comes from the completely successful jump from graphic novel to animated film. In this version of history, Louis Napoleon, known as Emperor Napoleon III, died in an explosion before he could provoke the disastrous Franco-Prussian war in 1870. Now, in 1941, his lookalike descendent, Napoleon V reigns over a world in which petrochemicals and electricity never really developed.

Everyone speaks French in this deforested and polluted world, and the population gets around by hot air balloon and bicycle-powered dirigibles. Coal has run out and the arboreal regions of Canada are proving to be an energy gold, as greedy developers rush to turn northern expanses of evergreen trees into sooty charcoal. A young scientist Avril (voiced by Marion Cotillard) and her talking cat Darwin (Phillippe Katerine) become involved with a conspiracy whose villains have connections to her parent’s experiments. Director Christian Desmares and Franck Ekinci have plot by the pound, and the fine cat is a dashing figure, central to the Bond-movie like finale. The source novel is by the ambitious French graphic novelist “Tard,i” who works in Herge’s ligne claire style, which meant to serve the writing unobtrusively; Tardi is the kind of ambitious artist who has adapted everything from the writer Celine to real-life WWI stories (and he’s so scrupulous about artistic freedom that he turned down the Legion of Honor). The material doesn’t quit, but in neither characterization nor in scripting does it escape a certain visual flatness that comes straight from an illustrative drawing style. (Camera 12). (RvB)

BEAR NECESSITIES Bill Murray, voice of the lovable bear Baloo in the new liveaction ‘Jungle Book’ movie, provides a place to rest in this sometimes hectic film.

Back to the ‘Jungle’ SOME CRITICS COMPLAINED that Rudyard Kipling wouldn’t have recognized Disney’s 1968 animated Jungle Book, the story of a feral boy’s adventures with animals. Jon Favreau’s remarkable computer-animated and live-action version has at least a sprig of Kipling’s verse in it. Raised by wolves, under the supervision of the black panther Bagheera (Ben Kingsley), Mowgli (newcomer Neel Sethi) is taught the wolf ’s code: “The strength of the pack is the wolf, and the strength of the wolf is the pack.”

Like the original, this version waits on the arrival of the bear Baloo (Bill Murray) and his corny but earworm-hatching song about the bare necessities of life. Baloo has a different take on the code: “That’s not a song. That’s propaganda.” This sometimes hectic film needed a place to rest, and the ever-leisurely, ever-slippery Murray provides it. Incomprehensibly, the serpent’s song, “Trust in Me,” is missing here. Surely, Scarlett Johansson had enough voice to murmur the tune.

Siouxsie and the Banshees’ drone- and harp-laden 1987 cover shows just how much fearfulness the number can have.

Favreau’s experience directing the CGI-heavy Iron Man seems to have paid dividends here, as the animation is of the highest order. Even recently, putting realistic talking animals on the same screen as human actors involved making

the motion of the muzzles match the dialogue. Here, the facial expressions of the beasts work in tandem with the excellent voice overs.

As the disfigured tiger Sher Khan, Idris Elba succeeds in acting a type we’ve The Jungle Book all encountered: a murderously shortPG; 105 Mins. tempered creature who considers himself Valleywide quite reasonable and patient. This jungle, a refuge of every animal around, has megafauna: a King Kongsized orangutan voiced by Christopher Walken. Who but Walken would have the wit to give the ape King Louie elements of the shadow-lurking Brando in Apocalypse Now, as well as the wildman singer Louis Prima?

Mowgli is a growing boy trying on roles, fascinated by the personalities and abilities of the animals he encounters, and terrified by the destructiveness of the adult human world. The film’s single best idea is showing how the humans live— raging, gesticulating, swaying, silhouetted in front of a monstrous crimson bonfire bursting with sparks. The bloom of the “red flower” seems to be Mowgli’s only weapon in a realm of fangs and claws, until he realizes how his craft and skills evens the odds.—Richard von Busack

Bigs Time THE THINKER San Jose rapper does his best Steve Jobs on the cover of his latest LP, ‘Think Bigs.’

Andrew Bigs balances privilege, perspective on latest record

N THE COVER of his latest album, Think Bigs, San Jose rapper Andrew Bigs wears wire-rimmed glasses and channels Steve Jobs in the iconic, if grammatically incorrect, “Think Different” Apple campaign. On the aptly titled release, Bigs distills his singular experience of growing up on the East Side, then attending private school for football at Archbishop Mitty.

“I grew up around poverty— gangbanging, people's families getting evicted,” he says. “And then I go to highschool with the children of CEOs and sports players. In high school, I had a homie that was homeless that stayed at my house sometimes. And then on the weekends, I'd go to a party at a fucking mansion. It was like ‘how do I exist within this?’”

Bigs—a shortening of his real name Bigelow—started out as an exclusively “conscious” rapper under the moniker “Society” in his “hard-headed” late teens. But as he aged, he took a broader stance, seeking to ground his insights in personal musings that were universally relatable.

“You don't want to be overly preachy,” Bigs says, explaining his shifting tastes. “But if the experience is authentic, people can connect whether they've lived it or not. Nobody wants to be told what to do or what to think.

Plus, young homies ain't going to listen to it if it don't bump.”

Bigs employs a coalition of producers to meld live instrumentation with the slowstomping pace of trap. The kick-off track, “Never Let You Down” rides a tinkly piano riff into a choirbacked hook about making enough dough for his parents to retire. But even though Bigs seeks to speak to everyone, he also understands that his race has given him benefits not offered to his childhood neighbors.

“White privilege is real,” he says. “I come from experiences that are hard.

Nonetheless, when I get into a car, they don't look at me the same as they look at my brother Malcolm (one of his

producers). I own that. You have to be humble, open to those conversations— recognize you just don't know what it’s like to be a person of color.”

Outside of music, Bigs works at DeBug, a media advocacy non-profit that gave him his first recording space. The emcee strives to highlight the stories of working-class people ignored in the tech-wealth narrative of Silicon Valley. He aids their “participatory defense” program which organizes the family members of an arrestee so that they can help lawyers beat the case of their loved one as a grassroots response to mass incarceration.

“Everything goes through the courts,” he says. “So it's a really traditional community organizing ethic applied to the courtroom. I spend a lot of time around this shit. I've seen mothers break down in meetings, people getting locked away for petty things. It shapes how I look at things.”

Bigs considers his music a part of De-Bug’s storytelling efforts and he shared his novel perspective with the country when he embarked on his first major tour, opening for Reef the Lost Cause. He traveled to Philadelphia and back, performing 17 shows in 30 days and earning a newfound confidence.

“It's a lot of hard work. A lot of people break,” he says. “It's tiring, physically and mentally, performing in and out every night. And it can just be a lot. This was a test, but I passed that shit with flying colors. I could have done another two months.”

He just returned from SXSW last month and hopes his communitybuilding and steady rap grind will deliver his hometown to national prominence. He is celebrating the release of Think Bigs with a show at De Anza College this Thursday.

“The dope part of San Jose hip-hop is that you can find all types of shit,” he says. “People with live bands, people doing super trap shit, turn-up shit, people on some gangsta stuff, people on some conscious stuff, boom-bap— all that co-exists. There's no stamp, where it's like 'Oh that's from San Jose,' but that in itself creates a style.

It opens a door to people creating whatever they want.”

And—fascinatingly—bad experiences may lead to more long-term happiness than good ones. By bad experiences, Dunn doesn’t mean screaming matches in the middle of the framing store. She’s talking about the kind you look back on and laugh about, like breaking down in some terrifying part of town, thanks to how your car is held together by duct tape, tree sap and hope.

This brings us to what Dunn reports is “our greatest source of happiness”— other people. And it’s here that you’ve got something over the more moneyed couples. They rarely experience the cooperative creativity and loving dedication that go into even the most mundane activities when you’re poor—like holding the antenna of your Salvation Army TV at a 47.8-degree angle for your boo: “Okay, honey—there! Don’t move! Only 18 more minutes till this episode is over!”

R. HARADA and I are rarely offended: mainly because we’re poor listeners but also because we’re lazy. Of course, this is not the case when it comes to the hallowed grounds where we sip, reflect, compose and sometimes repose. We take offense to so-called “happy hour” offers in the valley named after element No. 14.

Dollar-off domestic brews from 3-5pm—why bother scribbling that on a chalkboard? Jaeger shots for $2—it’s a digestif, unless your name is Kobayashi and you’ve just finished an eating contest. We object to half-priced menus that feature half-sized portions, “deals” on inappropriately flavored liqueurs (bananas have no business in a bottle), and various permutations of whatever swill won’t move off the shelf during evening hours. Alas, the happy days of happy hour have dissolved like morning alka seltzer.

Or, so we thought. One Tuesday ago, fate smiled upon us with a mighty grin.

Mr. Harada suggested an early in the week meeting to discuss our various interest and investments, and we decided on a quiet option close to my compound. I mounted my golden hoverboard and rolled luxuriously toward The Sherwood Inn on Almaden Expressway. I’m not sure how Mr. Harada arrived, because when I hovered into the bar, my eyes locked on a beauty so outrageous I lost track of time, space and my bank account.

My eyes filled with tears as I contemplated the gorgeous announcement: “Second drink is $0.25.” Any drink. You want top-shelf, great, that’ll be a quarter of a dollar for the next. How about massive appetizers for half off? Done.

I sighed into a fine Scotch and glazed over while Xavier Cugat’s “Brazil” played on the jukebox. Overwhelmed with the good times, I was startled by Mr. Harada when he appeared next to me without a sound. How long was he there? I’m not sure. Tuesday nights at The Sherwood Inn are that good.

The interior is old-school. It actually has a ceiling. There are no exposed portions of HVAC. It’s all flat, with a bit of popcorn. Somehow, I found it appealing. The happy hour made it hard to discern between dream and reality, and Roger, our bartender, looked like he had stepped off the set of Cocktail. He was attentive and cordial.

A fellow patron, one Harry Tuttle, assured us that the HVAC was in tip-top condition and verified that this is the best happy hour in town. Mr. Harada and I agreed. Somehow, after all obstacles, The Sherwood Inn is able to cater to those who need a little boost to settle into the week.—Tomek Mackowiak

San Jose State literary, art mosaic Reed Magazine celebrates No. 69

EED MAGAZINE, the literary journal of San Jose State University, will release its 69th annual issue next month with a gala hoedown spectacular at Books, Inc. in Mountain View.

However, that number of 69 is a bit misleading.

The journal can actually trace its bloodline all the way back to the school’s very beginnings in 1867, when the first issue of the Acorn was published by English Department

students of the California State Normal School, the institute that eventually became San Jose State University. As such, Reed is the oldest journal west of the Mississippi.

Professor Cathleen Miller teaches two semesters, fall and spring, in which students put the magazine together. They have to sift through hundreds of submissions, including poetry, fiction, artwork and whatever else gets included in the call for work.

Roughly speaking, they choose the content during the fall semester and then once spring arrives, the students start organizing the magazine, including the design, layout, production, sales and marketing. It’s a one-year amalgamation of learning

that essentially baptizes the students by fire and shows them how complex magazine production can be.

“We receive, over the internet, submissions from all over the world,” Miller says. “We have writers from South Africa, Afghanistan, Spain and France, and so on. In this last issue, we had a guy who published in The New Yorker, we’ve had people who published in Harper’s, and many others.”

The new issue, #69, features winners of the John Steinbeck Award for Fiction, the Edwin Markham Prize for Poetry, the Gabriele Rico Challenge for Nonfiction and the Mary Blair Award for Art, but Miller says the team strives to brand Reed as a Bay Area publication with a California aesthetic. Even though submissions come in from everywhere, many of which are included, the priority is to feature a foundation of locally-sourced stories and/or profiles of local artists. For

instance, the new issue will include profiles of legendary Chicano playwright Luis Valdez as well as David Perez, the former Santa Clara County Poet Laureate.

While the release party next month celebrates the current issue, a major milestone comes next year, as 2017 designates the 150th anniversary of the first issue in 1867.

The Reed team is already planning larger-scale hoedown spectaculars, both in San Jose and at the 2017 Association of Writers & Writing Programs (AWP) conference in Washington, D.C. Each event is going to be one hell of a party.

Since Reed features both established, active scribes as well as raw beginners, it’s worth a shot to submit your material even if you’re just starting out.

You never know what might happen.

For example, in my case, it never occurred to me until recently that I might have Reed to thank for helping launch my own writing career. When I was finishing up grad school at SJSU, I held down a miserable tech support job in the university controller’s office, a student assistant position for something like seven dollars an hour. It was uninspiring work: troubleshooting printers, domain name service problems and TCP/IP issues on Windows 95 machines in the university financial operations— accounts payable and receivable, payroll, purchasing, etc.—which were then located in the old Wahlquist Building. For an entire year, many mornings found me sitting there, on the clock, with nothing to do.

I began to write violent experimental fiction out of sheer boredom with my job. I harbored no expectations to ever write professionally, and I longed to leave San Jose forever, but I knew I had a way with words, so I completed a short story and submitted it to Reed, which they accepted for the spring 1998 issue. I remember festering in a lifelessly uniform cubicle, on the clock, doing nothing, when they sent me the acceptance email. I can’t say for sure, but it may have been the first thing I ever published. Although I didn’t know at the time, thanks to Reed, I entered a long tradition.

“We want people to really understand we have a literary scene that’s beyond just San Francisco,” Miller says. “There’s a lot of roots here in the South Bay as well.”
