Did my roommate’s girlfriend move in? I leave for a quick fast foot run and speed home to enjoy my spoils—after checking to make sure that my entire order of a double Jumbo Jack meal, sub curly fries and two tacos, made it in the bag. Once again, I encounter a fully occupied driveway. His and her cars alongside each other, like an old married couple settled comfortably on their sides of the bed. Parking in the East Side is a royal pain, so I’m screwed. Now, I have to circle a few-mile radius in the dark of night to find street parking. Halftime of the ’Dubs game is almost over and my food will be cold by the time I find a spot. In my frustration, I offered up a prayer that your driveway hog of a ladylove dumps you so I can park in front of my house again. #SorryNotSorry.

Forever Goldie BEAU GOLDIE’s long kiss goodbye just won’t end. The former CEO of the Santa Clara Valley Water District, which provides drinking water to 1.9 million people, retired under semi-duress in January (he received a six-figure severance check) after actions he took on multi-million dollar projects started getting increased scrutiny. A week after he called it a career, district employees were stunned to find him still coming in to work to kick it by the water cooler and talk shop—for three days straight. Execs told Goldie to knock it off and go home and everyone thought that was the end. But what about a retirement party?! The 31-year district employee is scheduled to have a swank send-off March 24 at Cinnabar Hills Golf Club, and he apparently still has district staffers organizing the shindig.

An invitation forwarded to Fly notes that attendees should send $60 to Goldie’s former admin, SYLVIA VAN DIEMEN, and mail it to the Water District’s address. If people have questions, they’re directed to call van Diemen while she’s working on the taxpayer’s dime. In a phone call, van Diemen insisted that Goldie paid for the invitations, stamps, envelopes and labels, They and district spokesman Did MARTY GRIMES What? suggested any public SEND TIPS TO funds being used were FLY@ de minimis. Holding METRONEWS. a party at a waterCOM guzzling golf course during a drought, however, is about as tone deaf as it gets for a former water district CEO. Grimes pointed out that Cinnabar has taken noteworthy steps to curb its water consumption by more than 30 percent, so yeah. Meanwhile, the district board was expected to appoint an interim CEO after press time Tuesday, with the top three choices being top execs: JIM FIEDLER, NORMA CAMACHO and JESUS NAVA, the last of whom is part of Beau’s informal party planning committee. Disruptive business models can make workers vulnerable to wage theft

A

NIS UZZAMAN penned the book on Silicon Valley success. In Startup Bible, the founding partner of San Jose-based Fenox Venture Capital preaches the gospel of prosperity-by-disruption to aspiring entrepreneurs in Japan. The volume touches on fundraising, patents and how to build a team, which he called any company’s “biggest asset.”

In what seemed a gesture of goodwill, he donated proceeds of the how-to guide

to help rebuild Japan a few years after the 2011 earthquake that triggered the worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl.

But to several of his former staffers, the donation looked more like a roundabout ploy for applause after stiffing them out of salaries. Last month, Fenox became the first venture capital firm in the Bay Area busted for wage theft. The U.S Department of Labor (DOL) ordered the firm to cough up $331,269 in back wages and damages to 56 unpaid workers.

From 2011 to 2014, investigators say, the company used free labor to prepare investment reports and recruit startups—the core functions of a VC firm. Under federal law, interns at a for-profit company must earn at least minimum wage if their work benefits the company.

The interns-in-name-only also spent hours translating Uzzaman’s book, which is either ironic or apt, given the region’s labor economics. “In Silicon Valley, exploitation is part of the business model,” says attorney Ruth Silver-Taube, who leads Santa Clara County’s Wage Theft Coalition.

Last year, Apple, Google, Intel and Adobe Systems reached a $415 million settlement in a federal class action lawsuit after a judge found that the companies conspired to suppress wages and stifle upward mobility with a moratorium on soliciting each other’s workers. The anti-poaching case shows that it takes sophisticated collusion to cheat well-paid software engineers. Pay theft, however, more often impacts immigrants, the working poor and the ever-expanding digital labor force. The nonprofit Economic Policy Institute found that two-thirds of the nation’s low-wage earners have fallen victim to the crime.

Constante Yanos, a 72-year-old machine operator who worked for Batinovich since the mid-1990s, got bumped down to a $16-an-hour independent contractor a few years ago. He said the lapse in pay, which amounts to about $3,200, prevented him from treating serious health issues. Meanwhile, the region’s dramatic shift from a manufacturing to service economy has made it difficult for Yanos to find work. “I feel ashamed to go apply now because of my age,” he says. He tried driving for Uber, he says, but his gas-guzzling SUV ate up too much of the profit.

Angel Rodriguez, 57, hoped the company would pull through for the sake of his cancer-sick wife and teenaged children. The unpaid wages set off a domino effect that cost him everything except his home in Los Banos. “I tried to keep it for my boys and my wife,” says Rodriguez, who took up farm work and recycling cans and bottles to get by.

In 2013, another Fremont company ran afoul of labor law by paying workers from India the equivalent of $1.21 an hour in rupees to install computer systems. The case resulted in $40,000 in back wages for eight employees and a surprisingly modest fine of $3,500. “It was appalling,” says DOL Assistant District Director Michael Eastwood, who works out of agency’s San Jose office.

Labor brokers can break the chain of responsibility, says Silver-Taube. As can the so-called “1099 economy,” which enables employers to misclassify de facto staffers as independent contractors. Uber became a high-profile example of the practice last year when the state Labor Commissioner ruled that the company’s control over drivers renders them employees. And, as evidenced by Fenox, work is sometimes presented under the guise of an internship to people eager to get their foot in the door.

In 2014, the Board of Supervisors passed an ordinance disqualifying wage theft violators from county contracts. This month, the Santa Clara Unified School District voted to require companies it works with to disclose wage judgments and prove that they made good on those payments. San Jose and Sunnyvale are considering similar measures.

“Local governments must close the enforcement gap,” Silver-Taube says.

“We are seeing some progress.”

the demand for service jobs and other blue-collar labor. The South Bay counts more wage theft complaints than any other region in the state and the highest average amount stolen from each worker. Still, it wasn’t until 2013 that Silicon Valley formed its wage theft coalition to lobby for stronger local laws.

The California Labor Commissioner’s San Jose office, which fields about 300 enforcement claims a month, awarded $8.4 million in back pay to 2,000 workers from 2012 to 2013.

Since the agency doesn’t readily track which companies pay up, however, two-thirds of those judgments remain uncollected. The region also falls under purview of the DOL Wage and Hour Division, whose 11-county Bay Area district has claimed $32.8 million for 16,980 workers since 2011. Nationally, the agency helps about 300,000 people a year recover $280 million in back pay.

That doesn’t include wages recovered by state attorneys general, state labor departments or the $460 million a year reclaimed by private attorneys.

Silver-Taube points to Fenox as an example of how the industry’s penchant for unconventional employment models opens the door for abuse. Some employers, she says, purposefully break the rules if a cost-benefit analysis weighs in favor of a violation. “We’ve always had misclassification,” she says. “But employers have found new ways to be greedy. It’s like old wine in new bottles.”

Victor Batinovich, owner of Fremont semiconductor manufacturer i2A Technologies, failed to pay 23 employees for six months over a 14-month stretch through last year. All the while, he sold goods made for free. Staffers say Batinovich led them on with predictions that the business would recover. Instead, he filed for bankruptcy and, in what seemed a last-ditch effort to skirt liability, demoted himself. U.S. District Court Judge William Alsup gave him two choices: pay up or go to jail. The last time the court threatened to incarcerate someone over a wage violation was in 1999. On March 1, the day Batinovich was ordered to surrender to the U.S. Marshals office, he brought in a cashier's check for $56,470.42. It was enough to avert arrest, but hardly covers the $200,000 the feds say he still owes.

“This company stood out because the failure to pay was so egregious and so longstanding,” says DOL attorney Rose Darling, who handled the case. “This sends a very clear

AN COULSON runs his bare fingers along the open gaps of the hive’s frames.

“Good beekeepers don’t need gloves,” he says. He pries one frame out of the hive and lifts it up to the light.

Coulson, the co-founder of the Santa Cruz Bee Guild, is showing me his beehives. There aren’t as many as I’d expect. A third of his bees died last year, he tells me. Empty hive boxes lay in the tall grass around his hillside home high in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

Not long ago, this would have alarmed local beekeepers—many on the coast rely on Coulson for advice when they suspect trouble at their own hives. But today, the news causes less of a stir. Beekeepers have been reporting alarming mass die-offs of their hives for more than a decade.

In that time, according to some estimates, the U.S. has lost a third of its honeybees, and no one knows why.

Ken McKenzie, president of the Santa Clara Valley Bee Guild, says

he lost 50 percent of his own bees this past year, which accounts for hundreds of thousands of bees spread across 26 hives set set up around Santa Clara County.

Local beekeepers, however, are undeterred. At the Santa Cruz and Santa Clara Valley bee guilds, swarms of beginning and veteran beekeepers fill the meetings, eager to share tips on how to support and care for their bees. Grassroots movements to save hives has provided a new hope. But even with the guilds’ help, keeping a beehive healthy nowadays requires an exceptional amount of skill, and luck.

Mystery Solved?

No one can say for certain why bees are struggling. Bees face many stresses—disease, mites, poor nutrition, and insecticides—and the die-offs probably have no single culprit. But a general theme has emerged among the theories: bees and modern agriculture simply don’t get along.

It’s not easy to be an insect on today’s farms. For instance, most conventional farmers protect their fields from pests with insecticides—chemicals that kill insects but not plants. Spray-on insecticides have a long history, but today many farmers prefer systemic insecticides, which plants absorb through their roots or seeds.

In many ways, systemic pesticides trump the spray-on ones, at least from an agricultural perspective.

Most notably, farmers are able to apply less of them to their fields, since the chemical compounds stay within the plants’ tissues. And they can’t blow away, a major benefit for neighborhoods that border farms.

Systemic pesticides should also spare pest-fighting bugs, for example, since these helpful critters don’t eat farmers’ fruits.

But with their benefits, systemic pesticides also bring new challenges.

With conventional insecticides, beekeepers kept their hives away when farmers sprayed. Now, compounds stick around in plants’

tissues—including in their pollen.

And when scientists look in some beehives, they find traces of pesticides.

No one is certain how systemic pesticides affect bees. But many beekeepers connect them to the sudden and widespread bee die-offs they began finding a decade ago.

Complicating the problem is the fact that not all regulators agree on how to handle the compounds.

In December of last year, for example, Canada banned the use of neonicotinoids, the systemic insecticide class most often blamed for the bee die-offs. In the U.S., though, the neonicotinoid review is ongoing. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reported in January that one subset of neonicotinoids may harm bees, and they plan to assess others in the near future. Many beekeepers wonder why progress is so slow.

But the case against neonicotinoids may be gaining momentum. Last

Still, Coulson doesn’t blame modern agriculture for the bees’ plight.

“None of this is the farmer’s or the beekeeper’s fault,” he says. “It’s just that it’s hard to make a living farming today.”

“Sometimes those herbicides mixed together can be more deadly than pesticides,” he says.

Why Bees Matter Plants flower for bees, not humans.

Bees see colors invisible to humans, such as ultraviolet—possible, in part, because they have five eyes. So flowers use bright pigments, particularly yellow and blue, to catch bees’ attention. To reward visiting bees, flowers ooze nectar, a sugary bee food and the key ingredient of honey.

“When I go through the pollen (collected by bees) and I see purple, yellow, red and blue, I know they have a diverse diet,” McKenzie says.

Flowers, like many organisms, have good reason to be sweet. Plants mate by sharing pollen, which sticks to the legs and bellies of bees that gather nectar. When bees depart for their next flower, the pollen tags along. And seeds too, like pollen, must be spread. So plants embed

To the Rescue Farms can’t survive without bees, but bees don’t need farms. And the new wave of beekeepers at local guilds often care little about farming—they just want to give their bees a fighting chance.

But beware, keeping a colony alive in the backyard is anything but easy. Bees that live miles from conventional farms, for example, still have plenty to worry about. Over the last few years, California’s long drought stifled many of the flowers that Bay Area bees visit. Even in Santa Clara Valley, one of the most diverse and flourishing ecosystems in the state, some hives struggled to find food and water.

Bees also suffer from their own pests. Within many hives, the tiny varroa mite—also ominously known as the Varroa destructor—burrows into apiaries, or birthing chambers.

“They literally suck the life out of

bees,” says Aldrich.

“They’re like a vampire with AIDS,” McKenzie notes. “We get malaria, typhoid and other diseases from mosquito bites; bees are getting viral and bacterial diseases from these piercing bites from varroa.”

Many beekeepers intend to raise colonies without chemicals, but end up forced to treat—or else lose— their bees.

And new pests like the varroa or tracheal mites pop up suddenly.

“Pests have always occurred from time to time,” Coulson says, “But nowadays they spread more quickly.”

Commercial beekeepers cart their hives from coast to coast to follow the blooms of major crops such as almonds, cranberries, or pears.

Meanwhile, pests tag along.

“It didn’t take long before varroa was attacking hives on both coasts, and everywhere in between,” Coulson says. “So many hives were dying, the mites almost ran out of places to go.”

Aldrich says bees will face a continued struggle “weathering the pests until scientists find better solutions.”

Coulson agrees that that the mite problem isn’t going away. “But bees will become tougher, and more hygienic,” he says. “And the mites will learn to be gentler.”

In other words, honeybees are resilient in the long run—they just need time to adapt.

While bees learn to live with the latest pest or disease, hobbyist beekeepers need some coaching in order to keep their colonies humming. Many seek advice from more experienced beekeepers through the Santa Cruz Bee Guild, or the Santa Clara Valley Bee Guild, which had more than 100 attendees at its monthly meeting (first Monday every month) this past week at Dwell Christian Church in San Jose. One of only two bee guilds in the county— the other is in GIlroy—the Santa Clara Valley guild has roughly 300 members, McKenzie says, and the draw isn’t solely expertise.

“We thought everyone came out for the speakers,” he says, “but really they’re here to hobnob with their friends.”

Flowers are savvy at attracting pollinator insects or animals to help them reproduce. But what happens when insects, like bees, aren’t there?

If flowers fail to mate, they produce no seeds. And without seeds, plants have little reason to fruit.

Farmers, then, must make sure their crops have plenty of opportunity to mingle. When bees spread pollen, they help orchards and fields yield fruit. At first glance, convincing bees to pollinate farms might seem easy—bees thrive near flowering fields. But a farm is only a bounty when in bloom. When a farm grows one crop, as many do today, the farm’s flowers all bloom at the same time. Bees may feast, briefly. But soon, the blooming crop turns to fruit, and for bees, the party ends. Before the next year’s flowers open, the bees’ honeycomb stores will run dry.

Farmers solved this problem many years ago. Rather than entice bees to stay, they now hire commercial beekeepers to truck in bees. Moving hives may be costly for farmers and stressful for bees, but mobile colonies make flowers fruit. And today, these bees-on-wheels visits help produce a third of the food we eat.

If not by name, you would recognize the band’s sound in a heartbeat. This symphonic metal band based out of Kitee, Finland, is best known for a quick string of American mainstream hits in the mid 2000s But Nightwish is a global metal powerhouse and the most successful Finnish band in history, with five No. 1 albums, 60 gold and platinum awards and more than 8 million records sold.

But this shouldn’t be a mystery.

Since its inception, Nightwish has dazzled audiences with a blend of fantasy storytelling, metal and classical music—all unified by the band’s beguiling, almost otherworldly female lead singer, Tarja Turunen. (TM)

It’s a given that the human population will be greatly reduced during the first wave of the apocalypse. My Babies Frankenstein is artist Dolores Zorreguieta’s solution to this problem of diminished reproductive capacity.

Her series of baby-shaped sculptures, made from recycled clear plastic bottles, eerily capture a newborn’s aching defenselessness. One ingenious touch: an electric light bulb illuminates the navel as an umbilical cord of wire snakes its way towards an outlet. The other artists in this group show (Frank Aguilar, Deborah Edmeades, Genevieve Quick) embrace the familiar tropes of science fiction and welcome a fantastic, if anxietyridden and uncertain, future. EGENDARY NEW YORKand London-based Pace Gallery has made its way to Menlo Park, and it hasn’t arrived quietly.

Located in a former TESLA dealership, “Living Digital Space and Future Parks” is a pop-up gallery—an appropriate term in this case, considering the impressive computer-visual art installation was outfitted in just eight weeks.

“It was crazy,” says Elizabeth Sullivan, the project’s director. The set-up began over the holidays and was further complicated by the city’s permitting process. All “fun stuff ”

for the 20-year art gallery veteran.

Pace has represented TeamLab for two years, starting with a similar installation at its flagship gallery in New York. According to Sullivan, while the Menlo Park exhibit is only temporary, it’s large enough that it could stand on its own in a permanent space.

“This is more of a museum type show for its size,” Sullivan says. "Pace has never done anything this big.” Along with the Menlo Park Space, Pace has opened a smaller, more conventional gallery in downtown Palo Alto.

With 20 installations spread throughout the 20,000-square-foot space, the exhibit is truly a sight to behold. Each mesmerizing piece interprets the natural world through high-tech multimedia.

It’s all the work of TeamLab, a Tokyobased collective known for its synthesis of technology and art. With more than 400 members, the group works in a truly collaborative atmosphere. “No one takes single ownership of any of the works,” Sullivan says.

“When people ask for headshots of the artists, they’re confused when I tell them there are no headshots,” the gallery’s publicist, Florie Hutchinson explains. “They are a singular entity.”

Indeed, there are no names attributed to any of the installations at Pace Gallery other than “TeamLab,” which provided everything for the exhibition—from soundscapes to the spatial organization of the show. This dedication to craft above individual recognition is only complemented by the smooth infusion of the show’s resolutely Japanese aesthetic.

Upon entry to the gallery one is confronted by the Light Sculpture of Flames, a suspended 8-foot square of more than 50,000 LED light. The sculpture reacts to viewers’ movements, changing in sound and concentration

of color depending upon where one stands. From there the viewer is led to a series of rooms, each with a different, but self-contained, organic atmosphere.

One room is nothing but colorful flowers, leaves and butterflies from floor to ceiling, gliding and fluttering around and responding to touch.

This attention to detail goes beyond the fastidious to the truly obsessive.

From randomized loops of huge and complicated computer visuals to biologically accurate depictions of a breathing, moving, natural world.

“The rock in the waterfall is based on a 3-D model, which they printed out, then put back into the visualization,” Hutchinson says, describing the lengths TeamLab went to in creating a rock for one of the gallery’s features. In other words, TeamLab designed a virtual rock, 3D-printed it for thermodynamic testing, and then put it back into the instillation. The result is a 20-foot tall, sparkling blue waterfall—serene and awe-inspiring in its kinetic detail.

Another impressive aspect of this astounding exhibition is that more than half the visual pieces—many spanning 20-foot tall walls—are interactive and coded to respond in different ways to different viewers.

This is best illustrated in the children’s section of the gallery, a separate building where kids and adults alike can draw fish and scan them into a real-time updated aquarium. They can also build virtual cities using interactive blocks and create entire visual stories by hitting different symbols on a scrolling wall-sized screen.

Each installation in “Digital Space and Future Parks” is a singular visual and emotional experience. Frankly, it’s difficult to do the installations justice in words alone. Every one of the 20 works, no matter the size, envelops the viewer in an intimate and strangely organic world.

Although a few of the installations were out of service during a recent visit, it was inconsequential to the visually overwhelming space. And while some of the demonstrations were a bit overwhelming to witness, there is an overall serenity to “Digital Space and Future Parks.”

FINAL BOW Silicon Valley Ballet is closing for good.

Curtain Call AFTER 30 YEARS of operation, the Silicon Valley Ballet has announced its shutdown.

“It’s so sad for us,” says Millicent Powers, executive director of the ballet, who last week, along with the organization’s board of directors, made the “very, very difficult decision” to hang up their proverbial dancing slippers and tutus.

Powers says that the ballet has been struggling for some time. “It’s no secret that the company has had problems over the years.” In fact, she explains, when she came on board in 2013—around the same time as SV Ballet’s Cuban-born artistic director, José Manuel Carreño—she viewed it as her mandate to right the ship.

“Not on my watch,” she says, recalling what she would tell herself about the future of the company. However, a “perfect storm of events” has conspired to sink the foundering company. Those events included an inability to secure long-term funding from more than a small handful of philanthropists and establish a sustaining endowment—vexing problems for such a high-caliber arts organization in as wealthy a community as Silicon Valley. “I’m very saddened that it falls to me to tell this story,” Powers says.

Established by former Artistic Director Dennis Nahat and Silicon Valley arts patrons Karen Loewenstern and Anita Del Grande in 1986, the company began its three-decade run as the San Jose Cleveland Ballet, a co-venture with the Cleveland Ballet. It relocated to San Jose in 2000 after the Cleveland Ballet folded. It was renamed Ballet San Jose and more recently was rebranded as Silicon Valley Ballet. The company has worked to serve the whole of the South Bay, offering dance classes in both San Jose and Palo Alto in both English and Spanish.

Dalia Rawson, managing director of the ballet and head of the organization’s school, will start a new school, bringing along many colleagues and assuming the liability to deliver services to families who had prepaid tuition prior to the closure. Students will be able to continue learning dance at Rawson’s new school, which will offer the same curriculum.

Still, Powers says, something will certainly be lost with the closure of SV Ballet.

“Humans need to get together and be in the same space,” she says, noting that SV Ballet was for everyone: from children to seniors, baristas to billionaires.

“That ability to have an institution in the community where everybody can participate—that’s kind of going away. … That’s what’s lost: it’s the human organism that makes this magical environment for all of us.”—Nick Veronin

Disney’s ‘Zootopia’ lampoons the human political world—with animals

REJUDICE IS THE theme of Disney’s marvelous animated comedy, Zootopia. The higher the concept, the more writers end up credited, but this much rewritten Zootopia doesn’t play that way. The sting and spice is visible in a clue in the title—it’s indeed a utopian fantasy of the lion laying down with the lamb, at least for political reasons.

(Jenny Slate of Obvious Child), voicing the dithering assistant mayor to Mayor Lionheart (J.K. Simmons of Whiplash), who wears an impeccably tailored suit while overseeing his city of animals—Zootopia. A ewe herself, Ms. Bellwether has a keen sense of when Lionheart is pandering to her genus.

Far out in the sticks, the appealing bunny, Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin), wants to grow up to be a police officer, instead of a carrot farmer like her hundreds of brothers and sisters. After a bruising stint in the police academy, she joins Zootopia’s police force. But thanks to the scorn of Chief Bogo (a Cape Buffalo voiced

by Idris Elba), Judy is busted down to meter maid duty—relegated to

roaming the streets of Zootopia, with its polychrome skyscrapers, which resemble a kid’s drawing of Las Vegas.

Hopps can’t get no respect, least of all from the ever-smiling, gently crooked fox she meets on her beat— Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman). He’s a slouchy character in shirttails and a semi-knotted tie. The fox carries out short-cons with the help of his fennec pal, who pretends to be a candy-seeking infant.

The plot starts to get thick and scary in the best Disney manner.

Predators—a 10 percent minority in this peaceable kingdom—are starting to vanish. Judy wants to investigate.

Nick has some clues, and the mystery starts leading the dynamic duo nearer to Zootopia’s most powerful players. When Judy gaffs up a press conference, the city panics at the thought of carnivores reverting to their “biological nature” by going wild and attacking prey animals—a

specieist explanation of the mystery, which—in the terms of this satire— his explanation is akin to a politician ascribing a racial basis to crime.

Zootopia isn’t about “sorority racism,” to use Chris Rock’s term.

It’s about deeper, dirtier stuff— the darkest suspicions and fears, lurking in the medulla. Savaged by a schoolyard bully fox when she was young, Judy still has a buried terror; her nose twitches sometimes in the presence of a predator, even if the law of tooth and claw has long since been superseded in Zootopia.

Judy and Nick get along so well that you’d think they’d been the heroes of a dozen previous cartoons.

They complement each other—the vulpine hustle and playfulness meets rabbity litheness, as well as that very considerable power of being underestimated because of looking cute.

The chases are whirlwind fast—in hot pursuit of a weasel (Alan Tudyk), Judy heads into the rodent town where even the six-story buildings are so small they can be tumbled like dominoes, and cars become roller skates. The fox and hare investigate a yoga retreat run by a hippie yak (Tommy Chong) with a halo of flies; they track down a Hispanic-accented jaguar (Jesse Corti, in what I’d hope is a tribute to the accent of the bored jaguar in Nick Park’s “Creature Comforts”). There’s reliable comic relief from a fey cheetah desk sergeant (Nate Torrence) who worships the town’s musical diva, Gazelle (voiced

by Shakira).

Zootopia is not all puns and movie parodies—though a bit about a mole Godfather finds some hilarity, despite the overworked material. It becomes most fascinating when it turns out to be about the political use of a crisis—perfect entertainment for this election year. It’s outwardly message-y, and for once that’s a good thing, since the film has so much weight in characterization, dialogue and feeling.

Zootopia has its meta-side: “Life isn’t a cartoon musical where you sing a song and all your insipid dreams come true.” It acknowledges problems that no bumper-sticker can patch over, and yet it leaves room for an exploration of a seriously charming world.

Family Secrets CINEQUEST CLOSES with The Daughter, director and writer Simon Stone’s variation on the themes in Ibsen’s The Wild Duck. The title is deceptive. Even if Stone includes Ibsen’s wounded duck, the movie is not about ducks, it’s about chickens—the kind that come home to roost.

To his credit, Simon isn’t merely reiterating the plot of the play. In a New South Wales company town, in the blue-misted mountains, a centuryold family lumber mill is closing.

The patriarch of the place is Henry (Geoffrey Rush), about to marry his much younger fiancée, who used to be his housekeeper. Henry’s dissolute and angry son, Christian (Paul Schneider), has just returned from many years in America: he’s been two months on the wagon and is hoping to change his life.

Christian’s old college friend Oliver (Ewen Leslie) is among the newly laidoff in the lumber town. Aside from the job stress, this easygoing man’s life is peaceful—he’s happily married to Charlotte (Miranda Otto), and his pink-haired daughter, Hedwig (Odessa Young), the delight of his life, is doing well in school.

The stage is well set and the cast

is ready, but the focus on Christian as a clumsy Hamlet keeps this increasingly melodramatic film from coalescing. Rush’s sturdy supporting acting—you can see the man holding back his skills to let the other actors shine— The Daughter can’t counterbalance Christian’s tendency to NR; 96 Mins. blow up. Sometimes the California sound cuts for a groaning Theatre, cello soundtrack when San Jose Christian is having a tirade, suggesting that Stone wanted a little step back from some oversized acting.

There are impressive actors at work here. Sam Neill is Walter, the grandad who lives near Oliver’s trailer. Neill puts more tensile strength into the role of the “grandad who has a small menagerie of wounded animals that he nurses back to health” role than you could imagine possible. He’s the drama’s moral center, too. When the scandal breaks, he cautions even tempers: “Everyone’s got a story like this … It’s as old as the hills.”

The cautions go unheard. The Daughter is ultimately theatrical, despite this novel look at a lovely and underexposed corner of Australia.—Richard von Busack

This (unfortunately) unpreviewed anime is tremendously ambitious— something like Alan Moore’s League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, only more so. In 1878, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s own Dr. John Watson and his zombie assistant, “Friday,” are recruited by the arch-intelligencer Mycroft Holmes to investigate a conspiracy that bids to shake the British Empire to its core. In this alternative history, in which Thomas Edison and Dr. Frankenstein exist side by side, Watson meets reallife adventurers—like Frederick Burnaby, a soldier as travelled and lucky as Col. Harry Flashman and far better behaved. He also encounters fictional creatures: Hadaly, the “Future Eve” of writer Auguste Villiers de l’Isle-Adam, the decadent novelist who coined the term “android.” It’s based on the novel by the ill-fated writer ‘Project Itoh’, who died of cancer before his 35th birthday. BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO SNUFF Director Mitchell Altieri and the North Bay’s Butcher Brothers (The Hamiltons, Cinequest ’06) collaborate on this violent yet amiable satire of the forbidden genre of snuff films. This urban legend was inflamed by a terrible recut grindhouse film titled Snuff (1976) which boasted it was shot “In South America…where life is CHEAP!" City living had gotten so ratty by the mid-1970s that people were willing to fall for the idea that actors were being killed on camera for our amusement.

No such luck.) The slick Dresden (Richard Kern) and his gullible brother Domenic (Luke Edwards) are running out of money and hope in Los Angeles, and may have to go back to Minnesota. They hear of a horror movie contest and decide to trick some unfortunate actress into believing that she’s fallen into the hands of maniacs. “Don’t say anything about this being a snuff film,” Dresden advises. “We’re calling it an experimental film, at this point.” Jennifer (the terrific Bree Williamson) gets cast as the victim, and that was the two fools’ biggest mistake…soon, it’s a Ransom of Red Chief situation in which even the safe word (it’s “Mockingjay”) can’t save them.

Male fantasy stuff at times, but the fiery-eyed Williamson is well worth watching and gorehounds will appreciate the witty procedural gags. (Plays Mar 11, 12pm at Camera 12.) (RvB)

THE TALK Chicago’s Joe Otting directed this 8 minute look into parental hell making its world premiere at Cinequest. A too-frank father (John Hoogenakker, from TV’s Empire) has taken his daughter out for a slice of pie and disabuse her of the notion that there’s a Santa, a Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, or any such thing as marital happiness.

(Tapping her on the forehead, Dad says, “Pull your head out of your ass.”) The twist, when it comes, is the little girl’s topper to her father’s confession; young Isabella CrosettiCamp (she was in Joy) nails it, roots the story and sells it. Her sad reaction shots give this exercise in comic cruelty its keenness, making it seem as good as a short on Saturday Night Live. (March 11, 4:30pm, at Camera 12.) (RvB)

THE ADDERALL DIARIES James Franco is never not working.

A quick scan of his IMDB page shows that 2016 will bring the release of fourteen film and television projects. This does not include three in various stages of production for 2017, and one more lined up for 2018. This begs the question: does Franco sleep?

Regardless, in The Adderal Diaries he stars in this adaptation of the memoir by Stephen Elliott.

On paper this sounds like a good match: Elliott founded the online literary magazine The Rumpus and has reserves of energy to write and direct films as well. The dark territory here is in their wheelhouse: addiction and the endemic unhappiness found in every damaged family. (Plays Mar 12, 7pm at California Theatre.) (JE)

Longing to find the brother from whom he was separated at birth, this prole discovers that the sibling in question is a legendary assassin for MI-6. Fartbarf With a name like Fartbarf, it’s pretty apparent what you’re gonna get.

Except not. Rather than being a group of greasy-faced adolescents who ran out of good ideas for what to name their band, Fartbarf is a trio of Cro-Magnon mask-wearing analog modular synth enthusiasts who sound a lot like a drunker (a much, much drunker) Tobacco—with live drumming and an obsession for chiptune flourishes.

T’S DOUBTFUL that any of us ’80s babies realized it at the time, but we soaked up a lot more than words like “shoryuken” and meme-worthy phrases, like “all your base are belong to us,” while we sat cross-legged on the floor, frantically tapping our plastic Nintendo and Sega controllers.

It would seem that our tiny, developing brains—hyped up on sugar-laden cereal—were absorbing the soundtracks to our favorite video game titles. And now, fully

grown men and women all over the country are picking up guitars, keyboards, drum kits, and, in some cases, Game Boys, to pay homage to these iconic melodies from the Reagan and Bush I years.

The Rockage 5.0 festival, slated to take place March 11-13 at venues all over San Jose, corrals a cohort of musical groups that specialize in either reproducing the music of Zelda, Mega Man, Super Mario Bros. and the like—or else take cues from those crunchy, 8-bit synth sounds.

There are 17 bands performing over the course of three days at The Ritz, Café Stritch, SoFA Market, AFK Gamer Lounge and the lobby of Metro’s downtown headquarters. That’s a

Here are five bands you’ll definitely want to check out at Rockage 5.0.

Bit Brigade This quartet is so serious about replicating the experience of their favorite video game titles that they’re actually a quintet. Which is to say, that in addition to drums, bass and two guitarists, Bit Brigade also have a full time game-player in their lineup.

Noah McCarthy blasts through levels of Metroid and Mega-Man while the band “meticulously replicates every musical cue, cutscene and boss battle in perfect synchronization.”

Given their traditional rock instrumentation—guitar, bass and drums—and their tendency to lapse into spacy, feedback-and-delay squalls, it would at first seem that Hawk Jones, like Cola, are outliers in a festival stacked to the brim with bands who take so much inspiration from the world of early console game soundtracks. But when you consider the Tera Melosesque angularity of their rhythms and guitar lines, it makes sense. The limitations of 8- and 16-bit chips is precisely what gave the music that crystalline feel. These local boys simply replicate that pingponging sharpness with strings, membranophones and the chips inside their effects pedals.

IT’S A TRIP Tropical bass duo Dengue Dengue Dengue! hail from Lima, Peru, but their rhythms are positively cosmic.

Fever Beats “IF WE COULD make people smell and taste the show, we would,” says Rafael Pereira, one half of Lima, Peru-based tropical bass duo, Dengue Dengue Dengue!

He’s referring to his and his partner, Felipe Salmon’s, dance parties, where the rhythms and instruments of divergent musical traditions intersect in exciting ways. Cumbia’s joyful, tropical rhythms, the surf rock-informed Peruvian genre—“chicha”—and the wild, click-clack of indigenous Amazonian drumming are all sealed together by the subsonic thud of Western bass music.

As it is, Pereira and Salmon haven’t figured out how to tickle the olfactory senses of their listeners with sound, but they do use their backgrounds in graphic design to heighten the experience of each Dengue Dengue Dengue! show. Using audio-visual mapping, they craft complex laser light compositions, which are inspired by aliens, space ships and the humid, leafy jungle for which their native land is known.

After scoring some favorable press from the likes of Vice’s electronic music channel, Thump, Dengue Dengue Dengue! are embarking on a world tour to promote their forthcoming LP, Siete Raices, tentatively set for an April release. Their first trip to the U.S. will take them to 12 venues in 20 days and will include a Sonido Clashproduced set at The Continental Bar on March 10.

In press photographs and on stage, the pair always wear masks, which resemble something a shaman might don in preparation for an ayahuasca-fueled ritual. The neon, geometric face coverings enhance the trancelike effect their music can have. Pereira and Salmon often hand out masks to the crowd, inviting their fans into the fold of their psychedelic tribal dance party.

In a way, Dengue Dengue Dengue! are 21st-century shamen, guiding their audience on a spiritual journey through light and sound. Pereira explains that he and Salmon like to begin their performances with a beat that is easy to dance to. However, once things start heating up, he says, they like to get “weird”— breaking with traditional rhythm structures and challenging the audience.

“We push the limits of what we are doing,” Pereira says, explaining that the duo keep a close eye on the crowd, pulling back when things get too outthere and pushing forward when people seem at ease again. The ultimate goal, he says, is to allow the audience to get lost in the music—the same way one might become enveloped within a psychedelic experience: “You can be dancing for an hour, and you won’t notice.”—Anna Bagirov

If humans could change to become cold-blooded, would it be advantageous to us?

(Assuming we changed instantly.)—Zayne Johnson to take a while. If somehow we were to manage it on the expedited schedule you propose, though, here are a few practical effects the switch might occasion: • Life would go by at a different pace.

Because ectothermic creatures rely on external temperatures for energy, we’d have to spend some time lolling in the sun each morning before we were really able to get going—like drinking coffee, but cheaper. Wintertime? You might want to set up a few heat lamps in your house, lest you run the risk of descending into a state of torpor.

• With torpor on the menu of metabolic options, though, space travel should be much easier for cold-blooded humans— kind of like the “cryosleep” you see in sci-fi (which, by the by, NASA-funded research really is exploring as a means of enabling long-distance missions—say, to Mars). A cold-blooded crew could survive at low temperatures for much longer than a warm-blooded one, allowing them to travel months, maybe years, on minimal resources.

• Combing the universe for other habitable locales might start to look like a pretty good idea. Back here on earth, land-dwelling ectotherms tend to do best in a temperature range of about 70 to 105 degrees Fahrenheit. So provided we wanted to lead reasonably active lives, ectothermic people would likely gravitate toward latitudes close to the equator, and presumably giving rise to byproducts of large-scale human migration: overcrowding, resource depletion, political destabilization.

Then again, there’s global warming to consider. If the world gets too hot, those warmer regions might not end up being so attractive to the cold-blooded version of us after all, or for that matter to any ectotherms. We don’t have to speculate alone on this topic: the coauthor of a 2009 paper described the outlook for tropical ectotherms as “catastrophic,” given the narrow range of temperatures in which they’re comfortable. We’re talking about everything from crocodiles all the way down to insects; you can’t take a swathe of creatures like that out of the food chain without some major repercussions.

So, if by some future miracle we’re able to render ourselves cold-blooded, we’ll already have foreclosed the possibility of living successfully that way on earth.

And assuming some of us haven’t already made the transition. I mean, try convincing me Vladimir Putin doesn’t have at least a little reptile in him.

I kid, of course, but before getting to your question I’ll just note some research showing how humans can, in fact, become a little colder-blooded in a hurry: through social exclusion. In one study, after some subjects were excluded from what they thought was a communal computer game—frozen out, you might say—their skin temperature measured 1.3 degrees Fahrenheit lower than subjects who’d gotten to play. Other experiments have likewise confirmed that temperature influences our interpersonal skills, such that when folks are warmer they’re more likely to engage in social behavior; simply raising the temperature of the room can improve relations within a group. Take the Donner party: when the going got cold, the cold ate each other.

These are minor, temporary fluctuations, of course, and you’re apparently thinking bigger and bolder, Zayne. OK, but first we should be clear on what we mean. “Cold-blooded” is layperson-speak and corresponds to several overlapping technical terms describing an animal’s metabolism, and how much variance in body temperature it can handle. The concept we’re really interested in here, though, is ectothermy.

Ectothermic animals—reptiles, amphibians, fish, and invertebrates, basically—don’t generate significant body heat; their external surroundings determine their internal temperature, which they can only regulate via seeking out sunlight, shade, etc.

Endotherms, by contrast—birds and mammals, including us—maintain consistent body temperature using their own metabolic heat, and can regulate it physiologically as needed (by shivering or sweating, for example).

The primary advantage endotherms have over ectotherms is the ability to thrive in a wider variety of climes, whereas ectotherms benefit from lower food consumption.

So humans becoming ectothermic— out of the question, right? Not so fast. That first fish crawling out of the primordial sea was cold-blooded, and we evolved from it—suggesting that creatures can change teams, thermoregulation-wise, but it’s likely

There are clues to where on the divorce spectrum someone falls, like whether she makes off hand remarks along the lines of “I wish him well, but we weren’t a good match” or “I wish I could leave him tied up in a clearing so something would eat him.”

There is something to be said for waiting periods, whether you’re mentally ill and shopping for an Uzi or hoping to live happily ever after with someone who might not be entirely recovered from her previous attempt. But the blanket “wait two years!” advice is silly and probably comes out of a misconstruing of some research finding. (there are important individual differences that can get lost, like that footnote about potential side effects: “Oh, by the way, 1 percent of the subjects ended up wearing all their teeth on a necklace.”)

Ideally, you’ll make a guy ache with longing—but more along the lines of “I wish she’d text me back” than “I wish she’d put down those binoculars and get out of my bushes.”

In other words, you might rethink “authenticity”—letting the true you (or rather, the truly impatient you) shine through. Consider acting like the more effective you, as you surely would for a job interview—rather than showing up in sweats and bragging that your character reference is actually your pot dealer and that “Mr. Bradley,” your “former employer,” is the neighbor’s Labradoodle.

Chances are you’ve been “blatantly pursuing” because, like many women, you confuse “equal” with “the same.”

However, there’s substantial evidence from evolutionary psychology research that women evolved to be the choosier sex and that men co-evolved to expect

this—and see female aloofness as a sign of value. So a more productive strategy for you would be what social psychologist Robert Cialdini calls “the scarcity principle.” Cialdini explains that the less available something is, the more we value and want it. Not because it’s better. Because FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) and the regret we’d feel if we let that happen jack us into a motivational state—a panic to get whatever’s in short supply.

But don’t take my word for it. For three weeks, try something new: flirting and waiting instead of chasing and pouncing. Ultimately, it’s best to start a relationship on the premise that actually allows it to start—coming off more like the appointment-only store with a single avant-garde dress than the kind with a big yellow sign in the window: “Everything in the store, $15, including the dog.”

San Jose Chamber Orchestra draws key influences for 25th anniversary

A

N OLD WISE GUY from the East once said, and I’m paraphrasing, nothing in the past is ever wasted or squandered.

It’s all just one big stew that prepares you for what’s currently unfolding. For example, don’t think your college life was thrown away like last week’s newspaper, just because you didn’t use your degree for anything. As you evolve, it will all come back into your life somehow.

With that in my mind, the San Jose Chamber Orchestra presents its official 25th anniversary concerts this Saturday and Sunday at Le Petit Trianon Theatre. The program features worldbeating premieres by retired and/or former San Jose State University School of Music faculty. For starters, Brent Heisinger will debut his new work, EKTA III, taken from the Hindi word for ‘unity’ and inspired by the African percussion teachings of another former SJSU professor, royal hartigan, who now teaches back east. This weekend, hartigan—who spells his name all lowercase—returns to play on the piece, along with bassist Wes Brown.

Also on the program is a new work by SJSU professor Pablo Furman.

Of course, the spacetime continuum-

shattering aspects of such a gig preclude me from any objective interpretation.

In the same way that Taoists and quantum physicists might understand reality, I, as the observer, cannot separate myself from that which I observe here.

Heisinger, hartigan and Furman were key influences during my decade of college, which seemed to begin right as the San Jose Chamber Orchestra did.

The first two years of music theory I took at SJSU found me in Heisinger’s classes. I can’t even fathom how many hours I spent in the Spartan Pub studying, in particular, Wagner’s use of leitmotifs in Tristan and Isolde, or Debussy’s impressionistic pointillism in Prelude to the Afternoon of a Fawn. Both of those masterpieces formed a launching pad into 20th century music, which I then embraced. In Furman’s case, my first semester of Sound Recording found me in a tiny upstairs studio with an old four-track recorder and quarter-inch tape, splicing the sounds of my voice into strange Dada-esque or William S.

Burroughs-style sonic cut-ups. Yes, this was my first assignment.

However, in royal’s case, he was my premier, half-western, half-eastern inspiration. His lifelong commitment was then, and is still, the mainstreaming of all the world’s musics, whether it’s Korean tunings, Balkan folk music or African percussion. He was the only SJSU prof ever to teach a semester of Indian ragas, one of the best classes I ever took. Instrumentally speaking, on a trap set, royal could play four different meters at once, all while reading the newspaper and talking about the 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates. He was also the only one who let us roll bowling balls down the aisle in the music building for a final project, with him, the teacher, as the sole bowling pin, standing at the end of the hallway. He embraced Dada. He was hip to Fluxus, Duchamp and John Cage.

He was receptive when someone rode a homemade motorized skateboard through the classroom, crashing into desks while that student’s compadres made a racket with synthesizers, all while the motor shorted out and filled the room with smoke, thus emptying the classroom. He was receptive if that student then hopelessly tried to justify it with French poststructuralist philosophy, as if he was some wannabeEurosnob grad student.

With relentless enthusiasm, he inspired hundreds of students with words of unity and freedom, both musically and politically, encouraging everyone to upset any apple cart they could find and become better at whatever they wanted to do in life.

The old wise guys from the East were right. None of those days were wasted, even though I usually was. As a result, in this column, I now get to cheerlead for some of my biggest influences in college, all of whom are still creating, composing and performing a quarter century later. Yes, they’re back together this weekend to celebrate 25 solid years of new music thanks to Barbara Day Turner and the San Jose Chamber Orchestra. By my interpretation, that orchestra is San Jose. Everything cycles back, everything returns to the forefront, and I am proud to tell all my readers about such a rocking gig.

T WAS A STORMY NIGHT, and Evil was a foot. It came in a Jimmy Choo sandal a size and a half too small. Evil’s toes hung off the front like refugees jockeying for position on a deflating raft. It seems a designer shoe, no matter the size, is tough to pass up if the price is right. Fake it till you make it, I guess. Such are the times.

We overheard Evil’s witless shopping narrative at one of the downtown’s polished new spots. Mr. Harada had no patience for such blatant consumerism, and he suggested we make our way to a place with fewer toe hangers hanging about. I took a quick inventory of the scene and agreed.

We decided on The Cats Restaurant and Tavern in Los Gatos. All was going splendidly until we realized the light rail only goes as far as Winchester and San Tomas. We caught an Uber for the last leg of the trip and pulled off of Hwy. 17 to find a full parking lot. This place has a Los Gatos address, but it exists outside the Town proper.

The Cats is a highway bar, and should be respected as such. It’s crammed with redwood and oak appointments. Decapitated large game hangs on the walls. Two western-saddle bar stools sit at the far corner of a busy bar and there’s usually a band on the small stage. The place rumbles into the night, as dancing is encouraged in the small pockets of space between the bar and tables.

Legend has it that The Cats was a speakeasy and brothel. Historical accuracy tends to be fuzzy in places that serve good beer and cocktails, but it does make for an enjoyable imagination exercises. It’s certainly easy to picture, as a lot of the regulars look like western outlaws and/or lumberjacks. (I call them outjacks.)

Mr. Harada and I enjoyed several drafts for what you’d expect to pay at a proper dive, all while listening to a live band perform respectable renditions of familiar tunes. The place also serves proper St. Louis-style BBQ, and the smell of hickory and applewood hangs like a friend’s arm around your shoulder.

HE FORMER HOME of a Wienerschnitzel, across the street from a Chevron in a sleepy San Jose strip mall, can’t be right for a vegan restaurant, right? Wrong. The bright yellow, steep-roofed eatery on the corner of Meridian and Branham now shelters The Flying Falafel, the first spinoff of the San Francisco favorite. In just its second month, the place combines great food with fun and a sense of mission.

Sitting outside on the cheerful red chairs wasn’t bad despite the noise of traffic. Beyond the parking lot, tall evergreens give the spot a camping vibe, and other customers are quick to recommend suggestions, such as The Frisbee (falafel and hummus in pita, $7), which I was told in no uncertain terms was “awesome.”

Flying’s owner, Assaf Pashut, handed us free tastes of hot pita, thicker than usual, dipped in hummus and sprinkled with parsley—yum! As he flipped falafel balls high in the air behind the sliding window, he told us his story. At UC-Berkeley, he protested animal cruelty and started selling kinder foods on campus, foods he grew up with. Nine years of farmers markets and a micro-restaurant in the City followed, before a customer alerted him to the Wienerschnitzel building becoming available. Pashut opened the 100 percent soy-free and vegan restaurant in January.

My friend and I started with an organic banana shake ($4.95), pleasantly horchata-like, and a large plate of veggies, hummus and falafel ($7.50). Our pitas contained plenty of goodies: cabbage, carrot, tomato, parsley, cucumbers and imported pickles, the latter providing a nice crunch. The falafels, sesame or spicy, were subtly flavored and freshmade. We also got dolmas (four for $3.95) of green salty leaves, loosely wrapped around soft rice.

The pitas were wonderful, a whole “Pocket” ($7) or a half “Snacker”($4.95) with falafels, veggies, sauce and a handful of thin-cut, fragrant fries— Lebanese style, I understand. You can get fresh hummus to go (8 oz. for $3.95), tabbouleh ($4.95) or one of the other gluten-free options.

I never miss dessert, so we had cinnamon baklava ($1.95), which was flaky on top and nicely sweet on the bottom.

The owner told us locals still come up, oblivious to the “Fresh-Baked Pita” banner, and ask for chili cheese dogs.
