Pretty sure I mentioned something about my place being only a few freeway exits north of yours, so the reimbursement seemed a bit excessive. Reflexively, I laughed it off. A few minutes into my drive home, however, that mean orange light on my fuel gauge prompted a change of heart. Sure, your offer covered about $190 more than the cost of the journey. You know what, though? I’ll take it. The rent is too damn high for me to care about a couple of C-notes turning this broke bitch into a happy hooker.

Where’s the Green?

DARCIE GREEN’s state Assembly campaign had a few stumbles to begin the year, mainly because her husband tried to gloss over his rap sheet involving violence against women.

Green subsequently lost support in her organization Democratic Activists for Women Now (DAWN), after blaming the media for “sensationalizing the issue of domestic violence.” When it comes to how much financial support she lost in her Assembly bid, that’s more difficult to ascertain. Green has still not filed campaign disclosure forms for the end of 2015, according to the Secretary of State’s website, which could be a violation of the law. Green’s camp insists it turned in its forms—by mail or fax, it won’t clarify; either method is highly unusual, as online is the easiest method—but for now there is no record. Green’s campaign treasurer, sister Desiree Green, made several accounting errors in handling Darcie’s 2014 run for county school board, and it appears funds for that campaign and Green’s Assembly bid may have been commingled, according to an amended filing. A trustee for the county board of education—she was president just last year—Green has apparently squandered early support from organizations like the Latino Caucus, which threw her $4,200 as far back as last June. Any contribution received above $2,000 requires a campaign disclosure form to be filed, says JAY WIERENGA, a spokesman for the state’s Fair Political Practices Commission, so it seems there is a pattern in Green’s flouting of transparency laws. It may not matter for long, though, as Green’s biggest foes, MADISON NGUYEN and ASH KALRA, both raised more than $300,000 last year, according to their readily available forms.

Other candidates CONG DO, VAN LE and even latecomer ANDRES QUINTERO could be passing by Green.

Homeless techie Simon Brook launches janitorial startup

S

IMON BROOKS rolled into Silicon Valley with his border collieblack lab mutts, Lexy and Chelsea, and his life savings tied up in a promising wordplay app. The British ex-pat and lifelong language buff had already released a Dictionary.com-powered word game called Gadzookery.

Buoyed by that success, he pawned his belongings in a weekend yard sale, gave the bank back the keys to his house outside Louisville, Kentucky, and headed west.

He arrived late 2013 in Mountain

View, where he slept in his dinged-up ’99 Lexus between 16-hour shifts at the Hacker Dojo, a 24-7 startup incubator that famously spawned Pinterest. Six months later—spring of 2014—the money dried up.

A Kickstarter to raise money for his Scrabble app spinoff failed to gain traction, despite a supportive tweet from the wildly successful Words with Friends creator Paul Bettner.

“At that point, you’re stuck,” says Brooks, whose restive bent lured him years ago from his native London.

“Once you get to that point—no access to showers, food and all the rest of it—it’s really hard to get out.”

Broke and famished, he kept his mind off the hunger by dividing his time between the dog park and the Dojo. Sleeping proved a pain, so he worked the long hours. Last summer, he finally got a break, but it had nothing to do with his word game.

“Here’s me thinking I’ll educate the world with this game I’m making and someone asks me if I could clean toilets,” says Brooks, 46, a wiry 5-foot10 with gray eyes and a thatch of sandy brown hair. “I was offended.”

But the offer from Dojo management spawned Squiffy Clean, Brooks’ fledgling janitorial startup that aims to “clean up the cleaning industry.” The $51 billion professional cleaning sector, he discovered, is rife low pay and workplace abuses.

“It’s horrible,” says Brooks, who launched Squiffy without a cent to his name by convincing his first customer to buy equipment by paying ahead for service. “I was shocked.”

Night shift janitors, he learned, are easy targets for abuse. ABM, the nation’s largest janitorial company, stands in dubious company. It’s among a group of only 15 American corporations to have been probed several times by the federal government for sexual harassment.

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has sued ABM three times since 2000 for botching sexual harassment complaints.

blue-collar jobs in a region known for its chasmic divide between rich and poor. “The tech thing is overstated,” says Geil, who ran a cleaning corporation, among others. “We need this other type of work, especially since the wealth gap is getting wider.”

One way to change the business paradigm, Geil says, is to give workingclass employees ownership in a company.

The higher wages, of course, will make service costs increase. But, Geil says, moneyed Silicon Valley firms have something of an ethical responsibility to hire contractors that treat their workers well. “People want to pay as little as possible in this industry,” Geil says. “The problem is they don’t understand the value. Or the human impact.”

Eduardo Torres, a 26-year-old father-to-be, found Squiffy by way of a Craigslist ad a few months back. Seven years in the cleaning industry, he says, he only ever found minimum wage jobs, so the $17-an-hour offer looked like a scam. “I applied anyway,” he says. “I got the job right away and began cleaning that night. The biggest thing for me was that he offered ownership. That’s what a company should do.”

While not a case of rags-to-riches, Brooks’ story—that of a homeless man who took it upon himself to create jobs—appealed to Torres.

“That means a lot—to see someone who wants to do something more with his life,” Torres says.

Four months ago, Brooks’ dogs died and he buried them under a sapling.

To cope with the grief, he devotes all his time to growing Squiffy—a portmanteau of “squeaky” and “spiffy”—into something he can scale up and out.

“I’m still going to make my app,” he says, turning to his desktop computer to pull up an old crowdfunding website for his tabled word game, which has since been pulled off the app store. “There’s so much more I want to do with my life.”

A “job,” he quips, stands for “just over broke,” shuffling from paycheck to paycheck without getting ahead. “I don’t want a job,” says Brooks, who now lives in a rickety RV on loan from a friend. “I want more than that. … I don’t need or want a private jet, but … I’d love to open an animal retirement home that’s open to the public.” A job of the paycheck-topaycheck variety, he says, won’t get him to even that modest dream.

Two of those cases included charges of rape. In all cases, the company settled and promised to bolster oversight.

A PBS documentary—Rape on the Night Shift, which uncovered the sexual abuse of women who clean shops and offices—convinced Brooks to dispatch his workers in teams.

“We go out in a group,” he says.

“Safety in numbers. We want to do better by our people.”

Rather than paying the industry standard of minimum wage, he says, Squiffy offers $17 an hour and encourages homeless job seekers to apply. Downtown Streets Team, a nonprofit that offers job placement and training for the homeless, has been in talks with Brooks as a potential partner.

Brooks has also promised to give his first 25 cleaners equity in the business.

Devashish Sarkar, who retired as CEO of BBC Worldwide to become an independent television producer in Palo Alto, featured Brooks in a soon-to-release documentary.

“I was struck by his being homeless in the very heart of Silicon Valley's vast affluence,” Sarkar says, “that he was making a business literally out of trash, as opposed to algorithms and big data, and that unlike the rest of the world who were dying to come to Silicon Valley, he was here because he was ‘trapped.’”

Silicon Valley, he points out, can pull people in and leave them stranded.

Nearly three-quarters of the region’s tech workers between the ages 25 and 44 are foreign-born, according to the 2016 Silicon Valley Index released this month.

About 37 percent have come to the United States specifically to find a job in the tech sector, per the report.

Brooks set his personal ambitions aside—“only for now,” he clarifies— to channel his somewhat frenetic entrepreneurial energy into a means to survive. Still just months into his blue-collar venture, he says the biggest challenge has been paying operating costs.

“Everything we get goes back to wages, rent and overhead,” he says, stationed at his desk in his new Palo Alto office. Before he branches out, Brooks wants to bring his contract cleaners onto company payroll. But he needs more cash first. Using a microfinance lending platform called Kiva Zip, Brooks is asking for a $10,000 loan, the bulk of it for working capital.

FINDING HOME HomeFirst staff are scouring the streets for vulnerable homeless people during the winter months.

El Niño Storms Spark ‘Shelter Crisis’ Policy in San Jose

BY RANDLE AUBREY San Jose made a bold move in December to help the city’s homeless population by implementing a “shelter crisis” policy. This allows for the suspension of certain health, safety and building code provisions in order to use publicly owned buildings as temporary warming shelters during extreme weather.

The decision was prompted primarily

by El Niño’s threat of heavy storms and potential floods along San Jose’s rivers and creeks, where homeless encampments tend to congregate.

It also comes as part of a broader initiative to provide greater support to the area’s 6,5000-plus homeless.

San Jose is home to one of the nation’s largest concentrations of homeless residents, with the problem making national headlines in 2014 during the shutdown of “The Jungle,” the city’s largest and oldest

homeless encampment. Since then, officials have moved forward on several radical solutions, including sanctioned homeless encampments.

Managed by local nonprofit HomeFirst, temporary warming shelters—located at the Bascom and Tully community centers, the Washington United Youth Center and the Biblioteca Latinoamericana Branch Library—are activated based upon National Weather Services alerts for extreme cold or rain, with updates communicated to local homeless populations primarily through direct outreach. The city has funded the program for 30 nights total, eight of which have already been used.

“We have a strong indication of where to find people during inclement weather and inform them of the local shelters available,” said

Rene Ramirez, director of services for HomeFirst. “We typically receive two to three days notice of an upcoming inclement weather episode, or extension of a called episode.”

HomeFirst operates a telephone hotline (408.510.7600) for shelter alerts, but, so far, word of mouth has been the most effective means of communication.

Warming centers’ primary purpose is to provide refuge from inclement weather, but other amenities are provided. “We provide a mat and blankets, hot and cold beverages, and snack-type food,” Ramirez said.

The city has also waived certain restrictions on religious facilities, allowing them to operate as warming centers as well. Seven local churches have opened their doors to the homeless so far, expanding the reach of the program considerably.

No Hate Crime Convictions in SJSU Trial A jury found three former San Jose State University students guilty of battery—but not hate crimes—in a high-profile bullying case of a black student. Joseph Bomgardner, Logan Beaschler and Colin Warren face up to six months in jail for clamping a bike lock around their roommate’s neck. All pleaded not guilty to the charges. Their sentencing date comes March 14.

The jury—comprising six men, six women and no African Americans— cleared 21-year-old Bomgardner of a misdemeanor hate crime, but deadlocked on whether the other two, both 20, were guilty of the charge. Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge Thang Nguyen Barrett declared a mistrial on those counts.

A fourth student, who was a minor at the time the harassment occurred, was adjudicated in juvenile court.

The three former students began pranking their freshman roommate, then-17-year-old Donald Williams Jr., almost as soon as the school year started in fall of 2013. According to police reports, Williams—who is black— became the only target. One of the roommates snuck up behind Williams and clasped a U-shaped bike lock around his neck. The next week, those three roommates tried the stunt again, but Williams dodged the attempt.

While the bike lock wasn’t used again, Williams said he continued to experience racial harassment. His roommates tacked up a Confederate flag in the common room, penned a racist slur on a dry erase board and wrote a snarky letter citing the “Beloved Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King Jr.” They reportedly called Williams “Three-Fifths” and “Fraction,” referring to how the Constitution counted black slaves for state representation in Congress.

The District Attorney’s Office will decide whether to seek a new trial on the hate crime charges.

The fest opens with an early rally in Palo Alto, where James Franco, one of the most famous actors to come from the Valley, discusses the craft of spinning a yarn at a “Storytelling Reimagined Conclave.” The author, actor, producer and director will speak with Susan Wojcicki, the CEO of YouTube—the streaming service that launched a revolution in immediatelymade and distributed content, forever changing the opportunities for filmmakers the world over.

Franco’s Epping is the perfect chrononaut; the actor has a trustworthy and wry face that seems to fit his early-1960s alter-ego, Jake Amberson. This is why Franco was able to carry off the part of James Dean. But Epping isn’t a history professor. He’s shocked by the racism that made this allegedly sunnier era so poisonous, for one.

It’s no spoiler to note that people in Stephen King novels need to be careful about what they wish for.

And, as Epping soon learns, his nation had bigger problems than even JFK was equipped to solve. Finally, he heeds what Templeton was trying to tell him: when you disturb the past, the past pushes back. This temporal meddling mutates America into a far more terrifying shape than he could have imagined.

Communism Interviews and re-enactments—shot in that cold, matter-of-fact style that defined Romanian New Wave— highlight Ilinca Calugareanu’s sentimental study of the effect bootleg VHS tapes had on Nicole Ceausescu’s tottering regime. In Communist Romania, there was one TV channel airing two hours of programming a night; when home video started sneaking in through the country’s western borders, it caused a sensation.

Chuck Norris vs. Communism provides us with a way of thinking good thoughts about some of the most craptastic ’80s cinema; a scene of an upside-down Norris geeking a live rat in Missing in Action is remembered fondly as a blow for individualism by people who packed Bucharest living rooms to see it. Most charming here is the mystique that still enshrines one Irina Nistor.

Ms. Nistor illegally dubbed some 3,000 videos into Romanian, and is remembered by aging fans as a kind of movie star in her own right. (Ms.

Ma Ma If after watching Zoolander 2, you miss the Penélope Cruz from Pedro Almodovar’s marvelous Volver (2006), Ma Ma may just satisfy that longing. The director Julio Medem—probably best known in the States for Sex and Lucia (2001)— returns with the story of Magda, a woman who finds out she has breast cancer. This is the second film in which Cruz has played a woman with breast cancer. The first was in Isabel Coixet’s somber Elegy (2008), where she played a supporting role as Ben Kingsley’s lover. The Spanish film, however, situates Magda at the center of the story. While firmly in the melodrama category, Cruz grounds the film with her natural warmth, humor and unfailing appeal. The Adderall Diaries James Franco is never not working. A quick scan of his IMDB page shows that 2016 will bring the release of fourteen film and television projects.

This does not include three in various stages of production for 2017, and one more lined up for 2018.

This begs the question: does Franco sleep? Regardless, in The Adderal Diaries he stars in this adaptation of the memoir by Stephen Elliott. On paper this sounds like a good match: Elliott founded the online literary magazine The Rumpus and has

reserves of energy to write and direct films as well. The dark territory here is in their wheelhouse: addiction and the endemic unhappiness found in every damaged family. (California Theatre, Saturday, March 12, 7pm) (JE)

Demimonde Attila Szász’s Demimonde (the 19th century French term for prostitute) starts with the dead body of Elza (Patricia Kovács) being found in a suitcase that has been fished out of the water. Where there’s a body there is a murderer and a motive.

The film trips back four days prior to slowly reveal the possible motives the personages inhabiting this beautifully shot pre-WWI world of Hungary could have had for murdering Elza. However, it would be wrong to characterize this films as a whodunit. Elza is introduced (well, introduced as a living body) seated at her dining table in the company of three men, one of whom is a writer and her secret lover, and the other two from whom she hopes to secure the financing for a film she plans to star in (one in which she unblushingly wants to take on the role of Joan the Maid). Her gifts for inspiring lust and manipulation are laid bare and set the stage for a sticky and psychologically rich chamber drama between herself (a former prostitute and currently very well kept woman), her faithful housekeeper Rózsi (Dorka Gryllus), and the newly hired Botticelli angellooking maid Kató (Laura Döbrösi).

Szász seems to derive inspiration from Alfred Hitchcock’s Rebecca.

He takes what in Hitchcock were hushed suggestions of violence and Sapphic tension between the deceased Rebecca and Mrs. Danvers (her likewise crushingly devoted housekeeper) and makes them wholly overt in Demimonde to great dramatic effect. (VF)

While the secret police raided living rooms to confiscate VHS players (as well they might, the machines were worth as much as an automobile), one wonders how much the authorities really cared about the illegalities. The film could have used some contextual words from, say, Slavoj Zizek about the difference between the permitted and the unpermitted-but-winked-at in a totalitarian society. STILL GOT IT ‘Since I can’t play spitfires anymore, I’m playing a spitfire grandma,’ says Maverick Spirit Award winner Rita Moreno

f there’s anyone who understands what’s lost when diversity is stymied, it’s Cinequest Maverick award winner Rita Moreno. She’s going strong in her 80s, even after a career of fighting off racial stereotyping—the studios even cast her as a Jivaro once. One of the few “EGOTs” (a winner of the Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony), Ms. Moreno lives in the East Bay to be close to her daughter.

Her new film at Cinequest is Remember Me. “Made right here in Berkeley,” she says via telephone from her home. Though Moreno hasn’t seen the film, she is confident it will

move audiences to laughter. “Utterly funny, funny as hell. Since I can’t play spitfires anymore, I’m playing a spitfire grandma, cranky and potty-mouthed.

She’s very opinionated and doesn’t

mince words, which has always been my true character anyway.”

Born in Puerto Rico, Moreno learned dancing from Rita Hayworth’s paternal uncle Taco Cansino.

Contracted to MGM, she was on hand for two of the best musicals made in Hollywood, both regularly revived— first, a small part in Singing In The Rain; second, and the larger, an Oscarwinning role in West Side Story.

Moreno didn’t know she was working on a pair of classics when she acted in them. “Singing in the Rain is one of my favorite movies ever—a brilliant spoof,” she says.

“But it just seemed like one more delicious MGM musical at the time.

West Side Story was all guts and blood and passion and tears. What was really funny about West Side Story is that, while I thought it was brilliant, I was convinced nobody was going to see it. They wanted five dollars a ticket for the roadshow engagement.

Five dollars! I couldn’t believe it.”

The actress even went so far as to tell her co-star George Chakiris that she thought it would fail. “Here’s a film musical, no spangles, no tap dancing, no pizazz in the costumes, and girls singing in a high operatic voices,” she recalls telling Chakiris. “I successfully managed to depress him.”

One of her favorite roles is The Ritz (1976), a role she’d originated on Broadway. Moreno suggests that the film’s director, Richard Lester, didn’t think the material was that funny, but even the YouTube clip of Moreno’s Googie is as hilarious now as it was 40 years back.

A spot of context: The Ritz is modeled on the Continental Baths, a gay bathhouse in the basement of NYC’s Ansonia Hotel, popularly but incorrectly supposed to have been closed by the AIDS epidemic. (The real culprit, as in the death of so many NYC attractions, was an overdose of bridge and tunnel people.) Many cabaret stars played there, but Bette Midler made her mark singing over the noise of a prop waterfall at the baths.

Moreno commented that there’s nothing funnier than actors trying to keep a straight face during a performance. Yet there’s something heavenly about a performer with plenty of exuberance and moxie failing totally on stage. Moreno’s

Googie massacres “Everything’s Coming Up Roses” from Gypsy, peeling down to a halter top and briefs, sending a high-heeled shoe flying and a wig slipping; she’s a star so dazzled by her own radiance that she’s blind to the wincing of her band.

Of the outrageously accented Googie Gomez, Moreno says, “I hiccupped and out she came. Dancers do two things when they get off stage.

One is light up a cigarette, which is insane. The other thing is to try to crack each other up. I used to do the Googie voice to recite Shakespeare: ‘Speak trippingly, I pray joo.’ I still do her for very specific fundraiser and HIV Aids benefits.”

One little mark of the quality Moreno’s dancing is that her striptease here is as uproarious as her number in Marlowe (1969) is dead serious exotic dancing. Moreno is the femme fatale who almost gets the detective killed. No James Garner fan should miss it—“a gorgeous hunk of man, he was just like you saw him in the movies,” Moreno recalls. In the movie she has her first meeting with Garner’s Philip Marlowe in a penthouse: the detective cracks, “Dolores. That name means ‘sorrow.’

Well, you picked a nice place to suffer.”

While looking forward to the Oscars—Moreno was all for Spotlight and Mad Max: Fury Road (“one of the most, imaginative movies ever seen, so creative and spectacular, and I love Charlize Thereon” )—she still sympathizes with the #Oscarsowhite boycott.

“I agree that it is too much of a white person’s club, and that it’s been a white person’s club for years and years,” she says. “I’m glad that’s had some light brought to it, because of what Will and Jada Pinkett Smith.

More power to the people who just decided to do something about it. It was inevitable, somebody was going to say something about it. I think Americans suffer from secret racism, and they’re less ashamed lately about their biases.”

But, Claire Carré’s haunting debut feature does not concern itself with what happens next. It is only interested in the now of existence and survival as its characters have an abortive relationship with time that makes it impossible for them to construct any sort of far-reaching plans. What little backstory there is we are able to slowly glean as the narrative deftly shifts between five different storylines. Embers presents a world nine years after the spread of a virus that has rendered the survivors unable to make any short term memories (though the range in extremity of this disease seems to have affected people differently, where some can hold onto memories for a day while others only for a few minutes). We are the sum of our experience on this planet and Embers boldly and intelligently takes on questions of identity, love and the meaning of existence without ever teetering over into what in the hands of a less capable filmmaker could be rendered maudlin. Despite

the tangle of bleakness Carré still finds beauty in individual moments and a belief in the possibility of the ineffable strength of human connection that lies outside time, memory and consciousness. (VF)

S HE LAY DYING in a rented room, Oscar Wilde supposedly quipped, “Either this wallpaper goes, or I do.” Eight years prior to this parting shot, a Pasadena woman named Charlotte Perkins Gilman wrote a story titled “The Yellow Wallpaper.” It has been likened to Poe, and it was praised by H. P. Lovecraft. The story has also been an inspiration to generations of feminist writers.

It’s a fantastically unusual tale for someone in 1892 to have written.

The style is fierce, confrontational and devoid of the labored, flowery language so common to most literary works of that era. It’s almost colloquial in its first-person description of a walled-in woman’s incipient madness. Gilman said she wrote it “not to drive people crazy, but to keep people from going crazy.”

Following a bout of postpartum depression, a Victorian woman is kept in a room by her physician husband. In the name of rest to cure her nerves, she is forbidden to read, write or walk in the house’s garden.

With very little to occupy her time, the entrapped lady’s attention falls to the wallpaper. In its vague

story,” he says. “It is horrifying, but what we’re focusing on is the process of how the character Eleanor gets to that point of insanity, and starts to see the ghosts in the wallpaper.”

Ahari and his crew are using a little CGI to manifest Eleanor’s demons, but the essence of the film is focused on her interior life. This version is set in the 1960s—“right before the Mad Men era.”

Spartan Studios has been participating in Cinequest for many years. “Spartan Studio usually starts getting different scripts for the summer, and they seek out a director who has a crew and a plan,” Ahari says. “I was lucky to be the person.”

Ahari had planned to tackle The Yellow Wallpaper later; he wanted more time to research it. But Spartan Studio coordinator Barnaby Dallas suggested to Ahari to do it at once. So he jumped right into it.

“After the script got picked, we had basically one month for preproduction: building the set, casting and so forth,” Ahari says. “We had eight days budgeted for shooting. …

We were shooting 12-14 hours every day.” Fortunately, the director says, his crew was great. “They were all very dedicated and wanted to make the film happen.”

Still, the Barco Escape project also made demands on Ahari’s time. The Secret of 40 is the first horror film ever made for the Barco Escape format, and editing a three-screen film can prove to be quite tricky. “We were lucky enough to go to L.A. and do a test screening at Barco,” he says.

“Everything has worked … so far. “ Indeed, it would seem things are working out for Ahari. Just one class short of earning his degree, he has already fielded an offer to direct a feature film. All that’s left for him to do is keep up. “It’s all happening so fast,” he says, “almost before I’m ready.”

patterns, she sees “no radiation, or alternation, or repetition, or symmetry.” Soon, she sees silhouettes beckoning to her.

Rising student filmmaker Kourosh Ahari has adapted scriptwriter Amy Robert’s version of The Yellow Wallpaper for SJSU’s Spartan Studios. He’ll be presenting a rough-cut screening of the film for Cinequest—on March 2 and 12 at the Hammer Theater, former home of the San Jose Rep. “The current version is a work in progress,” he says of the film, which is running somewhere between 70 and 80 minutes in its current, unfinished state. “We still need to get a few more shots.”

Since moving to the U.S. at age 19 to pursue filmmaking, Ahari has made quite a name for himself. He has worked on eight short films, claiming writing and directing credits on four of them and earning a nod from Cannes Film Festival for Malaise. The film, which he produced and directed, was selected for the Cannes “Short Film Corner” in 2015.

Now in his mid 20s, Ahari is as busy as ever—working to finish The Yellow Wallpaper, as well as The Secret of 40, a film to be screened in Cinequest’s Barco Escape showcase, demonstrating a new triple-screen format. “I wouldn’t be lying to you if I said I only got three hours sleep last night,” the director says.

Born in Iran, Ahari originally planned to major in animation at SJSU. However, there wasn’t room in the class. He considered waiting a year but switched to film instead. It wasn’t long before he was working on his first short film, which he screened at San Jose State’s annual moviefest.

Though Ahari had never thought of himself as a filmmaker, he turned out to be a natural. The Cannesaccepted Malaise, shot in 2014, was one of his very first shorts. “It was, of course, exciting,” he recalls. “It was something I did not expect for a short film—suddenly, I was in this world of filmmakers, and I went to Cannes to see how it is in real life.”

Ahari chose to adapt The Yellow Wallpaper, a book he’d read in an English class, because he was interested in exploring the inner workings of a mind on the brink. “Some people would read it as a gothic, as a horrifying

The subject is the border between the United States and Mexico. Misrach captures the vast desert expanses, the fences and the walls that divide the two countries. Galindo composes sonic landscapes on musical instruments that he’s constructed out of found objects left behind by migrants.

Through photography and music, both artists evocatively capture the atmosphere of what it means to live on the border, and the inherent dangers in trying to cross from one side to the other. The show runs through July 31. (JE)

In a way, it makes perfect sense that Israel Sanchez would combine the seemingly incompatible— sometimes mashing jaunty acoustic guitar riffs, with post-grunge distortion and heavy drumming; sometimes lurching into straight-up metal territory, complete with galloping palm muted strumming.

He’s from San Jose, after all. That much is clear from the jump of his video for “Wide Awake,” where Sanchez sports an “ESSJ” hat and a “Skate and Destroy” T-shirt, all of it black. With his gaged-out ears, a septum piercing and wellgroomed beard, Sanchez reps the quintessential SJ uniform, in which the aesthetics of gangsta rap, metal, skateboarding and punk collide— just like in his tunes. These are just a few examples from the 14 artists in Demarcate: Territorial Shift in Personal and Societal Mapping. Cartographic imagery is the shared and common denominator for the participants tackling such themes as urbanization, the natural environment and the location of our social, emotional and political identities. Civil Rights icon Ruby Bridges will receive Steinbeck Award at SJSU

OR THE FIRST time in the 20-year history of the Steinbeck Award at San Jose State University, the accolade will be given to a person John Steinbeck actually wrote about. When civil rights icon Ruby Bridges receives this year’s award in the Student Union on Feb. 24, the circle will complete itself.

In 1960, Steinbeck was almost done writing Travels With Charley and went out of his way to visit New Orleans,

where a 6-year-old African American girl was about to break the color line by attending an all-white elementary school. U.S. Marshals escorted her. It was national news.

When Steinbeck arrived at the event, he went incognito to observe angry white women the press had called “the cheerleaders.” The women were theatrically screaming violent racial obscenities just to get attention and applause from the other onlookers.

Steinbeck writes: “It had the same draw as a five-legged calf or a twoheaded foetus at a sideshow.” Since the women had obviously staged the affair, planning each vulgar outburst just for the media, he noted that their behavior “was the demented cruelty

of egocentric children, and somehow this made their insensate beastliness much more heartbreaking.”

The young African American girl, however, did not appear fazed. She ambled, even skipped, her way into the school, escorted by the marshals.

Since no one else would sit in class with her, a special teacher flew in from Boston and taught her, all alone, for the rest of the year. Steinbeck did not name Ruby in the book, but she later grew up knowing that the girl depicted was indeed her.

The Martha Heasley Cox Center for Steinbeck Studies sits on the fifth floor of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Main Library and helps sponsor the award, officially called the “In the Souls of the People” John Steinbeck Award, referencing a phrase from The Grapes of Wrath.

The award is given to any artist, activist or thinker whose work embodies the spirit of Steinbeck’s social engagement. Previous winners

include a substantial list of musicians, writers and raconteurs, with a rousing series of events to its credit over the last 20 years. In 1996, for example, the first Steinbeck Award was given to Bruce Springsteen, who was then touring behind his folk album, The Ghost of Tom Joad, so the timing was perfect. Thanks to Ted Cady of the SJSU Event Center, Springsteen showed up to play a special sold-out acoustic gig and receive the award. Consequently, Springsteen also came around in 2004 to present Sean Penn with the Steinbeck Award, which unfolded that year in San Francisco. Other musicians previously awarded include Joan Baez, Jackson Browne and John Mellencamp, but it doesn’t stop there. Folks like Studs Terkel and Rachel Maddow have also graciously taken time out of their schedules to stop by San Jose and receive accolades. Likewise, filmmakers Ken Burns and Michael Moore both recently received the award.

“Both of them spoke with the film students before they got their awards,” the center’s director, Nick Taylor says. “And that was really useful for everybody in the film program.

Michael Moore was actually wearing his San Jose State hat that we gave him on talk shows for the next month.”

However, there is a something unique about the center’s decision to honor Bridges with a Steinbeck Award, according to Taylor. She isn’t just an example of a hero Steinbeck might have written about. He did write about her.

“There have been a few people awarded that have a connection to Steinbeck, personally,” Taylor says.

“But what’s cool with Ruby Bridges is that she’s the first person who actually appeared in Steinbeck’s writing.”

For Taylor, the passage about the young Bridges skipping carefree through the gates of segregation was the highlight of Travels With Charley, one of the acclaimed author’s final books.

“For me, that’s the heart of that book,” Taylor says. “Everybody finds a different ‘heart’ of Travels With Charley, but that’s the theme that always sticks with me. I think it was really meaningful to Steinbeck as well. He was almost done with his trip, but he went out of his way to go there.”

CULTURE CLASH At Club Lido in downtown San Jose, Vietnamese and Mexican subcultures coexist.

‘Wild’ Harmony A HOMEMADE COMIC book, dilapidated and covered with dime-store sequins, appears on a pedestal at Empire 7 Studios. It opens up with graffiti-style lettering that quotes a 2007 Metro story by Dan Pulcrano: “To the eye, San Jose embodies a bastion of suburban banality, with a low profile downtown of ’80s highrises surrounded by ‘70s subdivisions and ’90s condos.”

But underneath that banality, a seedy and unapologetically garish crossover of Mexican and Vietnamese subcultures thrive in a dumpy two-story paradise. A new exhibit by Angelica Muro and Juan Luna-Avin documents the scene. “Club Lido: Wild Eyes & Occasional Dreams” is proactive in its gaudiness and authentic in its depiction of marginalized San Jose heroes. On the wall opposite the comic book, huge mixed-media illustrations showcase the same colorful characters, each image depicting a realistic figure from Club Lido Club Lido: Wild Eyes & against a solid and pseudo neon-colored background.

Occasional Dreams The colors are straight outta the children’s section at Michaels: vivid lime green, bright yellow, pink and Thru Mar 4, Free lavender. There’s even a lit neon ring attached to the Empire Seven Studios, wall, right in the middle of it all, perhaps an allusion to San Jose a circus ring, which is not dissimilar to Club Lido.

To be more precise, Lido is actually two microcosms. On the street level, a dive Mexican bar blasts low-fi Banda music for cheap dancing chic-sters and barflies. (At Lido a lot of overlap exists between those two categories.) At the same time, upstairs, a Vietnamese dance club attracts karaoke slick-suiters and transgender patrons with nowhere else to go in suburban wasteland America. It’s a masterpiece of a business plan, well deserving of its own art show. And in the show, people are dutifully illustrated. There’s a punk rocker, a Banda drunk, some nonbinary folks and a few Vietnamese karaoke mavens in bad thrift store attire discarded from a ’50s issue of Good Housekeeping.

None of this is fiction. Club Lido is a real place, of course, making the exhibit a purebred San Jose documentary of tacky genius. No other city could possibly have produced such a beautifully fucked-up conglomeration of marginalized outcasts. With such a huge percentage of Spanish- and Vietnamese-speaking people in San Jose, it’s odd that the two diaspora rarely come together. Lido has always been that place and now, thanks to Empire 7 Studios, the drawings are on the wall.—Gary Singh

metroactive FILM BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO SNUFF Director Mitchell Altieri and the North Bay’s Butcher Brothers (The Hamiltons, Cinequest ’06) collaborate on this violent yet amiable satire of the forbidden genre of snuff films. This urban legend was inflamed by a terrible recut grindhouse film titled Snuff (1976) which boasted it was shot “In South America…where life is CHEAP!" City living had gotten so ratty by the mid-1970s that people were willing to fall for the idea that actors were being killed on camera for our amusement. No such luck.)

The slick Dresden (Richard Kern) and his gullible brother Domenic (Luke Edwards) are running out of money and hope in Los Angeles, and may have to go back to Minnesota. They hear of a horror movie contest and decide to trick some unfortunate actress into believing that she’s fallen into the hands of maniacs.

“Don’t say anything about this being a snuff film,” Dresden advises. “We’re calling it an experimental film, at this point.” Jennifer (the terrific Bree Williamson) gets cast as the victim, and that was the two fools’ biggest mistake…soon, it’s a Ransom of Red Chief situation in which even the safe word (it’s “Mockingjay”) can’t save them. Male fantasy stuff at times, but the fiery-eyed Williamson is well worth watching and gorehounds will appreciate the witty procedural gags. BROTHER Every film festival needs at least one good revenge picture and Belgian director's Geoffrey Enthoven's Brother handsomely fits the bill.

Mark (Koen De Bouw) harbors a decades old hatred for his deceased brother Michel, who once upon a time whisked way the love of Mark's life. He gets the perfect chance to enact his loathsome revenge when the wealthy Grace (Alison Doody), a former flame of his brother, mistakes Mark for Michel and he decides to cheat her out of her fortune.

But it turns out that revenge is never simple as Grace has secret machinations of her own. (VF)

COLONIA Helmed by Florian Gallenberger (who won an Oscar for Best Short Film, Live Action at the 2001 Academy Awards), Colonia is a harrowing work

of historical fiction. It takes place primarily on the grounds of Colonia Dignidad, which during the rule of Pinochet served as both a cult and prison camp run by the vile and maniacal cult leader Peter Schäfer (Michael Nyqvist). Daniel (the never not interesting to watch Daniel Brühl) is thrown into the camp after being pegged as a political dissenter.

His girlfriend, Lena (Emma Watson), enters the camp willingly in order to help him escape, which turns out the be an all but impossible feat. (VF)

EYE IN THE SKY Despite the fact that Helen Mirren is the protagonist of Eye in the Sky, two of her supporting actors will be a welcome sight. The late Alan Rickman appears in one of his final performances. And if that weren’t enough of a draw, Jeremy Northam returns to the big screen after spending some time in television purgatory. You’ll fondly remember him as Gwyneth Paltrow’s rugged and charming Mr. Knightley in Emma (1996). The eye in the sky refers, in this case, to a drone. Mirren, dressed in chic military fatigues, plays a colonel targeting terrorists in Kenya.

Rest assured: complications occur.

FEBRUARY Actor Osgood Perkins (most recognizable for his role as one of Elle Woods' Harvard classmates in Legally Blonde) makes a stunning directorial debut with February.

Winter, isolation, a rural boarding school, the devil, and adolescent women make for a potent combination in this horror film which stars Mad Men alum Kiernan Shipka and Emma Roberts. Kat (Shipka), along with another student Rose (Lucy Boynton), is forced to spend her winter break at the boarding school after her parents mysteriously fail to pick her up. At the same time, Joan (Roberts) makes her way across the country toward the school. As the plot screws tighten and the dread mounts the collision of these storylines becomes inevitable. (VF)

GIRL SHY The California Theatre is a venue worthy of hosting a screening of one of the great silent comedies of the 1920s. Girl Shy stars Harold Lloyd (a contemporary and equal of Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin) as a terribly shy young man who is simultaneously fascinated by and terrified of women. After a few false starts he falls in love with the girl

PLAY IT AGAIN Christopher Walken and Amber Heard play a dysfunctional dad and daughter in this indie comedy. of his dreams who is, as the logic of Hollywood scenarists necessitates, is set to marry another man. The last act finds Lloyd hurrying to stop the wedding in a stunning, frenzied chase sequence through crowded streets. Organist virtuoso Dennis James will be on-hand at the screening to accompany the film on the mighty Wurlitzer. (VF)

I LOVE YOU BOTH A unique definition of an “it’s complicated”: Blonde, blasé Crystal (co-writer Kristin Archibald) and her gay piano teaching twin brother Donny (co-writer/director Doug Archibald) are in their twenties and still live together. That’s when the stable sibling relationship is troubled by the bisexual Andy (Lucas Neff) who isn’t clear on which twin he prefers. Doug Archibald’s film makes the unlikely situation plausible and diverting. I Love You Both doesn’t peter out into weird erotica or into soap. It’s fleshed by incidental details: the matter of fact observation of Crystal’s lassitude—she seems to be wearing pajamas for half the movie-- and regular interjections from Crystal and Donny’s slightly gaga Midwestern mom. (Gifting her son with a thrift-shop bow tie, she says, “Put that tie on—it’ll show the universe you’re ready for success.”)

It’s an example of the kind of romantic comedy we need, a comedy with more possibilities and less inevitabilities. (Mar 4, 7pm and Mar 8, 2:15pm Camera 12; Hammer, Mar 6, 9:15pm.) (RvB)

MY GOLDEN DAYS Three Memories from my Youth is the literal and more accurate translation of Arnaud Desplechin’s latest film. Proust’s madeleine immediately comes to mind. As this is a French film, the dawning of sexuality and the loss of virginity are two of the movie’s main ingredients.

Mathieu Amalric stars as Paul, the adult wistfully remembering his adolescent self. The flashbacks include a mother on the verge of a breakdown and a trip to the former USSR. This is Amalric’s third collaboration with Desplechin.

In preparation you may want to watch A Christmas Tale from 2008, which masterfully showcases a dysfunctional family falling apart at the holidays. (California Theatre, Thursday, March 3, 7:30pm) (JE)

ONE MORE TIME In The Rum Diary (2011), Amber Heard played a bombshell of the 1940s film noir variety with the sultry combination of smolder and danger.

Johnny Depp, her co-star at the time, must have thought so too; he married her last year. As Christopher Walken’s misfit daughter, Heard turns the heat down low and is unrecognizable as a confused and ordinary girl. If your on-screen father is Walken, the role must have held an inherent and obvious appeal: you know your character is going to arrive with some major baggage and kookiness. Set in the Hamptons, this East Coast film shares the loose feeling of a Henry Jaglom project

where everyone seems like an odd but dear old friend. (California Theatre, Monday, March 7, 7:30pm) (JE)

THE PHOENIX INCIDENT While The Phoenix Incident is director Keith Arem's feature film debut he has dozens of video game credits to his name (he is responsible for many of the Call of Duty installments), and thus brings a strong sense of world-building and sci-fi to The Phoenix Incident.

The film details the true story of multiple missing persons cases that were reported in 1997 in Phoenix, Arizona following the unexplained appearance of strange lights in the sky. Found footage, UFOs, and the potential of government conspiracy are made use of in this genre cocktail of horror, sci-fi, and documentary. (VF)

SUNSET SONG It is inarguably thrilling to exist in a world in which Terence Davies is making films (The Deep Blue Sea, The Long Day Closes, and Distant Voices, Still Lives are but a few of his masterpieces). Sunset Song (the title itself evocative of the sort of quiet and gorgeous filmmaking that Davies has hewed to throughout his career) is Davies's adaption of Lewis Grassic Gibbon's highly regarded 1932 novel. It is set on a farm in Scotland in the 1900s and follows heroine Chris Guthrie's (Agyness Deyn) troubles with family and love.

Catchy psychedelia of SoCal trio James Supercave is studied, effortless and totally danceable

OAQUIN PASTOR is happy to report that he is able to stomach movies these days. It wasn’t always so easy for the singer, guitarist and lead songwriter for SoCal avant-pop trio James Supercave.

“When you spend a lot of time thinking about something from a critical point of view, you just sort of

end up ruining the innocent enjoyment one can have when watching something without that critical framework or backstory or anything,” Pastor says, explaining that, for him, studying to be an actor at UCLA completely ruined the moviegoing experience for a time.

“If there is a dirty word in this band, It’s ‘actor,’” Pastor says with a laugh.

Thankfully, the days of overanalyzing French New Wave films and German Expressionist cinema are behind him.

These days he can just sit back and enjoy a romcom or mindless action flick like the rest of us. Then again,

unlike most of us, it’s unlikely that Pastor has forgotten all his schooling.

It’s likely that a certain base coat of acting and filmmaking fundamentals inform his viewing experience.

It’s an apt metaphor for his band.

While the sweetly psychedelic hooks and melodies of James Supercave’s latest album, Better Strange, most certainly have a fun-loving, groovy feel, there is something undeniably studied about the music.

And that makes sense. After all, Pastor, who grew up in Santa Cruz, and band co-founder Patrick Logothetti (keys and synthesizers), who grew up in San Jose, met each other in the UCLA theater department. While studying there, they learned a thing or two about what makes a compelling performance—information that Pastor admits must have some sort of impact on the music of James Supercave, a

band with a name that sounds like something an superhuman speleologist might call himself.

“When you’re on stage, in front of people, obviously, the audience is faced in one direction, and that’s a new space,” he says. “That’s not normal life.

There’s a character to engage in; there is a presence to take on. My favorite moments in acting are the moments where you lose sight of yourself because you are so absorbed in the moments that are going on.”

Also, while James Supercave is the name of this current project, Pastor, Logothetti and guitarist Andres Viallalobos have been playing together under a variety of monikers for about five years.

“We’re all songwriters,” Pastor says, attempting to deflect all the credit for the excellent Better Strange. Though he will allow that a majority of the record is his writing, he insists that every member of the band brings riffs and concepts to the table and that each potential peice gets considered. “There is kind of an ethos of ‘May the best part win,’” he says.

And that, in essence, is pop songwriting in a nutshell: collect a set of melodies, hooks and beats, sort the wheat from the chaff and then combine the remaining parts in a compelling way. It seems simple enough, and yet it’s not. The pop world’s top stars have an army of producers working at their back, sweating over each minute detail as they scientifically engineer chord progressions and vocal lines, which are often run by focus groups in an effort to determine their potential as the next big summer hit.

If anything makes James Supercave worth a listen, it’s that they manage to concoct those powerful earworms that everyone in the corporate music biz is chasing. And if anything makes James Supercave deserving of respect, it’s that they do this as a trio, on their own terms.

For Pastor, pop isn’t like acting.

“Pop is not a dirty word in this band,” he says. “Not in the least.” And yet, he adds, “We’re not trying to do anything too bubblegummy, either.

Our personal relationship with pop is we like stuff that makes us dance and feel good.”

Beginning Feb. 28 and running through March 8, Winter Fest will host 25 concerts at a variety of venues around downtown San Jose, including intimate clubs, like Cafe Stritch, and larger spaces, such as the historic Trianon Theatre.

SJ Jazz Winter Fest The festival kicks off Thursday, Feb. 25, with a performance from Kadhja Bonet at The Feb 28-Mar 8, San Continental Bar, Lounge and Patio in San Jose’s burgeoning SoFA arts district. The multiJose instrumentalist and songwriter is currently touring behind her debut EP, The Visitor, released sanjosejazz.org this past September. The five-song set of all-original material was described by NPR Music as “a cinematic and folky kind of psychedelic soul music impossible to pin down.”

Following Bonet’s performance, the John Scofield Joe Lovano Quartet take the stage Feb. 27 at the Oshman Family JCC in Palo Alto. A bona fide jazz supergroup, Lovano is a Grammy Award-winning saxophonist and composer, while guitarist and composer Joe Lovano has also won Grammys and was nominated for two awards this past year.

Scofield has collaborated with jazz legends, including Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock, and made a name for himself by melding traditional jazz with funk-flavored electronics. Lovano is one of the best known saxophonists working in jazz. He has garnered praise for his improvisational talents and his progressive approach to his instrument.

One of the leading jazz violinists of her cohort, Regina Carter is slated to perform at the Trianon Theatre on Sunday, Feb. 28. The jazz legend will be playing music from her 2014 release, Southern Comfort, which draws connections between two of her earlier albums—I’ll Be Seeing You: A Sentimental Journey (a collection of her mother’s favorite jazz standards) and Reverse Thread, which was inspired by traditional African music re-imagined and rearranged for the violin.

I’m in my first serious relationship. It started off super hot and sexual. Now, a year in, it’s lovey-dovey and cuddly. Not that my boyfriend and I don’t have sex. We do, and it’s still good. But we no longer sext or send cute selfies, and the butterflies feeling is gone. Is it all downhill from here?—Worried Once you’ve been together for a while, you may still have vivid fantasies running through your head during sex, like the one where you get to the dry cleaner’s before closing time.

The Declaration of Independence proclaimed that we have a right to “the pursuit of Happiness,” but it doesn’t get into actually having it, which, as you’ve discovered, can be a bit of a bore. This makes biological sense, considering that there are stages in attraction and bonding and a cocktail of biochemicals behind each. Dopamine, a neurochemical that researchers associate with wanting, “novelty-seeking,” and focused attention, is a star player when you’re in chase mode (aka “infatuation” or “attraction”).

However, evolution is no fool, and it realized that we couldn’t spend all of our time chasing each other around whatever passed for the kitchen table back when “the man cave” was an actual cave. So bonding hormones—oxytocin and vasopressin—eventually take charge.

And that’s why, a year into a relationship, you may be doing “unnatural acts” in the bedroom, but they probably involve things like dusting the mini-blinds.

Going from hot sexts to ho-humming along is a result of “hedonic adaptation.”

“Hedonic” comes from a Greek word for pleasure, and hedonic adaptation describes how we quickly acclimate to changes in our circumstances—positive or negative—

to the point where they no longer give us the boost (or kick in the teeth) that they first did. Research by social psychologist Philip Brickman and his colleagues suggests that we each have a happiness “set point,” and we keep getting pulled back to it. A fascinating example of this is their finding that people who won big in the lottery were (of course) stoked at first, but ultimately, they ended up being no happier than victims of crippling accidents.

Happiness researcher Sonja Lyubomirsky finds that people in relationships can resist hedonic adaptation, but it takes “ongoing effort” to bring in variety. She’s talking about varied experiences and, especially, varied surprising experiences. Surprise, Lyubomirsky explains in The Myths of Happiness, delivers “strong emotional reactions.” Remember strong emotional reactions?

The good news is that, even now, you can bring surprise into your relationship; you just need to stage it. Try to inject it into every day, and maybe take turns planning a weekly secret date night—secret from the person who isn’t the planner—so at least one of you is surprised. You might also take turns planning separate sextracurricular activities, on the same model. Without this extra effort, sex may still be fun, but the only way it’s likely to be surprising is if one of you tries to sneak out the window afterward.

When I was in my youth, a lot of women I knew fell for bad boys. I’m now a man in my 60s, entering retirement. Amazingly, I’m finding that even women my age prefer bad boys. What’s this about?—Nice Guy Since older women often end up dating much-older men, this leads to the question, what’s the profile of the elderly bad boy? Cheating at bingo? Swearing on the golf course?

Some older women—just like the younger ones—go for bad boys because they don’t think much of themselves and feel most comfortable with someone who seems to share their view. But even older women who aren’t emotional shipwrecks can be drawn to the aging delinquent. It turns out that a bad boy’s unreliability has a neurological upside. Neuroscientist Wolfram Schultz finds that unpredictable

“rewards” seem to be the most satisfying for the brain—maybe even giving us three or four times the buzz of the experiences that we see coming.

So, as a nice guy, the thing to be is exciting and unpredictable—without the downside of the deviousness, thieving, and unreliability. Use the element of surprise—even by hiding small presents (tiny chocolate bars) or funny notes around her house (as opposed to a bag of unmarked bills). Ultimately, even thrillseeking women prefer a man who says, “Quick, grab your suitcase. I’m taking you to Paris,” and not “Quick, duck down. The cops are here.”

Earthquakes’ clash with Cosmos recalls memories of Pelé

N HISTORICAL showdown will yet again unfold this weekend in the form of a preseason matchup at Avaya Stadium, where the San Jose Earthquakes take on the current incarnation of the New York Cosmos. The clubs have not faced each other in 32 years.

The Cosmos play in the current incarnation of the North American Soccer League (NASL), technically a “division-two status” league, but that

designation is misleading and often used in a dismissive manner. The Quakes play in Major League Soccer (MLS), officially the nation’s firstdivision status league, which wouldn’t normally pit them against the Cosmos in regular league play, but since there’s so much history between the two clubs they agreed to face off for the first time since 1984. Back in those days, the original NASL was the primary league in the U.S., but it was going through its final throes, circling the drain toward complete financial collapse.

The history between the two clubs is unique. In the ’70s, the Cosmos brought soccer legend Pelé to San Jose, twice, resulting in unprecedented fanfare.

Beginning in 1975, in attempts to

further Americanize the terminology and mimic the Super Bowl format, the NASL began to call its championship game The Soccer Bowl.

San Jose was awarded the first Soccer Bowl, which took place Aug. 24, 1975.

Three days later, Pelé and the Cosmos played a post-season friendly match against the Earthquakes. In front of 19,338 people at Spartan Stadium—at that time a few thousand over the stadium's official capacity—the Quakes defeated Pelé and company 3-2. This was long before the upper deck existed at Spartan, and fans sat on the dirt hill behind the north goal or even hung from the trees to get a glimpse of soccer’s GOAT (greatest of all time).

One year later, in August 1976, Pelé and the Cosmos came back to town during the regular season and the Quakes triumphed yet again, this time by a 2-1 margin in front of 23,048 fans at Spartan Stadium. At the time, it was the largest attendance

for any sporting event in San Jose history. The team even installed extra grandstands just for Pelé’s appearance.

Spartan Stadium in those days was a tiny, narrow place with barely any room between the sidelines and the barriers. After extra grandstands were added to the sidelines, players taking throw-ins were practically in the grandstands. For opposing squads, it was liking playing in a cage, with fans on top of players. People who were kids at the time still talk about those games, as Pelé was the biggest sports figure to ever appear here.

The Cosmos, of course, went on to win numerous championships and became the subject of many books and documentaries. With record executives and entertainment industry moguls bankrolling the team and fielding squad after squad of international personalities, egoists and millionaire players, plus regularly touring to the corners of the earth for exhibition matches, the Cosmos were the firstever global rockstar club, the first-ever world-recognized brand in any team sport. They were the Real Madrid of their day. In fact, the Cosmos built the entire stage that current clubs like Real Madrid walk upon.

At the same time, however, the Quakes were the polar opposite. There were the anti-Cosmos, a people's’ club that connected with the local populace on a street level. As the Cosmos partied with Mick Jagger and Henry Kissinger, the Quakes went to the movies and watched Slap Shot.

By 1984, after heady days of too much expansion and clubs trying to hire their own versions of Pelé with no extra revenue, the NASL went broke. The U.S. was not awarded the 1986 World Cup, so Steve Ross bailed from the Cosmos. League attendance plummeted and only nine teams remained. In fact, the very last game the Quakes ever played, in that league, was a 1-0 road victory against the Cosmos in front of 7,581—the smallestever crowd for a Cosmos match at Giants Stadium. Oh, how the mighty had fallen. This weekend, the history continues at Avaya Stadium.

Work hard or play hard, Lazy Dog offers a familiar retreat

ILICON VALLEY is home to many a workaholic, but we all need a vacation once in a while. Lazy Dog, a Cupertino restaurant inspired by ski lodges along the slopes of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, brings a dose of vacation to the bustling corporate area a few streets down from the Apple campus.

Meant to provide the warm and comfortable environment of a winter getaway, or perhaps a summer by the lake, the restaurant’s signature tower gives it a unique exterior. There is also an outdoor seating area to take advantage of the early spring weather.

The wait on a Friday night was about 30 minutes, which is surprising for a chain restaurant in a mostly vacant strip mall still under development.

After being seated at a booth under the high wooden beam ceiling, service ran smoothly beginning with a strawberry citrus soda. It was a refreshing mix: large

cuts of strawberry and lemon, with mint leaves and and a strawberry puree in a pipette.

From the extensive menu, we ordered wok-fried breaded calamari strips ($11.25) in a sweet soy plum sauce, sautéed with bell peppers and served over brown rice. The portion size was that of an entrée and very filling. The calamari itself was on the chewy side, but the sauce was a nice complement.

Caramelized Brussels sprouts ($6.95) are always a must-have for me. At Lazy Dog, the roasted cruciferous veggies are tossed with lemon, garlic, butter, capers and topped with romano cheese, creating a well-balanced flavor profile.

Though each sprout was large and the portion size was decent, they were slightly overcooked and lost some of their crunch. Saying that, I’d

still order the dish again.

The Hawaiian sticky ribs ($17.75) don’t appear any stickier than other baby back ribs and are tossed in a tangy sweet house made Hawaiian BBQ sauce. The tender ribs, which fall off the bone nicely, come with a mound of French fries drizzled with an orange umami sauce, sprinkled with sesame seeds, and an Asian slaw on the side. I felt indifferent toward the umami sauce and slaw, but I thoroughly enjoyed the ribs in the BBQ sauce.

Lastly, our Asian ahi tuna burger ($12.95) came out with a generous portion of medium-rare seared Ahi Tuna. The hunk of fish was layered with the same Asian slaw and wasabi dressing on a brioche-style bun. The combination of flavors was quite nice and the portion size was very filling. On the side was a cold pickled cucumber salad that also paired well with the flavors of the dish.

The atmosphere is loud and the décor is vibrant.

While the food here may not be life-altering, Lazy Dog is a fun place for families and large groups. In the same manner as other popular chains, like BJ’s or Yard House, it offers a variety of food in larger portions and a diverse drink menu with beers on tap. The atmosphere is loud and the décor is vibrant, which makes sense for families with young children—toddler tantrums go easily unnoticed, even if they all threw a fit at the same time.

Our server was very professional in her hand-off to another waitress at the end of her shift, causing no hiccups in our experience. Lazy Dog will provide a nice, casual fit for the run-run-run culture of the Valley.

The simple menu wastes no space—each item novelly crafted and most christened with a fun name. The “We Got the Beets” ($9) salad centered on red, orange and yellow renditions of the namesake bulbs that were sweet, earthy and par-boiled so they gave just a bit of resistance in each bite. The chilly roots came flanked by a smear of tart goat cheese mousse, oval ciabatta crisps and micro greens drizzled in a tangy truffle vinaigrette.

Their “Black Sheep” sandwich ($11) sits on a buttery onion bun. They smush the grass-fed ground lamb into a thin patty, coat it with cumin, then grill it until the edges get crispy. They cut the pleasant gaminess with the goat cheese mousse and a sweet, roasted bell pepper and golden raisin chutney.

Another option is the “Potbelly” sandwich ($13), which makes the most of thickly marbled pig belly. The pork slab is dappled with pockets of dense meat and rich fat, giving each bite a new consistency that alternates between the leanness of a chop and the unapologetic gluttony of bacon. The tasty cut was anointed with plum sauce, avocado puree and a crisp and tangy Napa cabbage slaw.

The family-owned lunch spot radiates warmth, and the wait staff moves quickly when you order from the counter—the cashier lightly roasted me on my thick glasses when I squinted to read the monitors displaying their menu, before handing me a physical copy.

Other options include: the “Kale and Farro” salad ($10) with feta, blood orange, winter squash and white balsamic orange and mint vinaigrette; or the “Moo N’ Blue” sandwich ($11), a skirt steak dressed up with blue cheese, grilled onions and mixed kale.

They also serve simple breakfast favorites such as biscuits and sausage gravy ($5), egg sandwich ($5) or Greek yogurt ($4). A sweet tooth can be satisfied by their fresh-baked cookies ($2): golden-brown chocolate chip or soft oatmeal raisin.
