Furry Kerfuffle The furry convention descended upon my workplace over the weekend like a stampede scene from Jumanji. Someone overturned the trash can for dramatic effect while regaling his furry friends with a story about fisting a cow. A tiger then asked me where they could find alcohol after 2am.

They were so angry when I wasn’t able to help that I thought they might actually maul me. Trash and fluids everywhere. I can’t tell what’s vomit and what’s just food that got thrown. Winnie the Pooh tried to steal the fence outside my storefront.

So many foxes running up and down the stairs that the building was shaking.

Rumors vs. Reality DARCIE GREEN’s state Assembly campaign sent an email blast to supporters last week noting it is in a “fight,” which is an interesting choice of words considering her husband’s violent past. But not everyone, among them the San Jose Mercury News, seems keen on acknowledging this and other ugly truths. In a recent post to its political blog, the newspaper completely ignored RICK ALEXANDER GREEN’s domestic violence convictions and instead focused on a rumor that state Senator JIM BEALL (D-San Jose) tried to get Darcie fired from her government affairs job with Kaiser Permanente. She’s currently taking an unpaid leave of absence to campaign full time. Reporter RAMONA GIWARGIS writes in her post that the rumor is just that, and it’s only coming from Darcie’s people. Beall flatly denied the accusations. But in Metro’s recent reporting on Darcie’s husband, it came to light that the couple actually got married a month prior in Nevada. The publicity stunt worked like a charm, as the Merc’s SAL PIZARRO led off a column recounting how it “slowly dawned on Green what was happening.”

Rather than admit it was hoodwinked by the Greens, like most everyone else, the daily paper remains suspended in denial.

Rick, however, appears to be addressing some of his past mistakes. On Monday, he spoke at a MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. Stop the Violence rally, before singing love songs in Spanish.

Monk in the Middle HOLY LAND Residents of a quiet hillside neighborhood have led a campaign to drive out a Buddhist monk.

Bizarre land-use fight pits neighbors against Buddhist cleric, followers

HE BUDDHIST MONK— quiet, diminutive Master Thich Duc Huy—settled into San Jose’s Evergreen hillside amid a cluster of fruit trees and rows of white lion statues in August 2011. He moved into one portable and set up a temple in another, adorning the sloped lot just beyond the city proper with flags, shrines and tented canopies for religious assemblies.

“It seemed peaceful,” says Kimberlee Lu, the soft-spoken treasurer of Master Huy’s Canh Thai Temple. “But everything changed.”

Neighbors, who initially welcomed the newcomer, went on the offensive once the temple began drawing crowds to the 1.8-acre site. Scores of cars and tour buses began to arrive on weekends and holidays for temple services. The monk’s drumming and chanting, neighbors said, would echo across the cloistered hilltop community. Cafeteria-style vegetarian meals would draw upward of 100 people, with their attendant traffic, chatter and litter.

It wasn’t long before Santa Clara County, which requires permits for public assemblies, began fielding complaints of a rogue monk in the east unincorporated hills. It took years of warnings, fines and ultimately a court injunction to stop the gatherings and clear the site of illegal structures.

Now, the land lies empty except for a smattering of debris, a white statue, a tire, an office chair and a few potted palms. Master Huy’s application to

build a two-story, 7,000-square-foot temple won approval from the county Planning Commission last August.

But his temple’s record of violations prompted neighbors to appeal that decision, prolonging a bizarre and contentious land-use battle that pits a secluded corner of San Jose against a hermetic holy man and his flock.

Opponents accuse Master Huy of witchcraft, adultery and even violence.

They say the temple’s history of breaking the law and the monk’s alleged personal scandals should disqualify the project from county approval. “This monk has done sexual escapades that would make Jimmy Swaggart blush,” says Mark Cao, one of the temple’s fiercest critics.

Temple members, on the other hand, say they’ve been harassed and intimidated for mostly inadvertent violations of local zoning laws while their leader’s reputation has been smeared. During one community meeting, police had to escort out a couple detractors. Another time, Lu says, a neighbor floored his Toyota Tundra back and forth by the property during a noise test to skew the results.

Lu, who volunteered as treasurer soon after the temple’s founding, dismisses the allegations as character assassination. “Master Huy is very humble,” she says, visibly frustrated. “We are here to help the community.”

Like Lu, Master Huy has tried to shrug off the rumors. As far as the court order and county fines, however, Lu says the whole ordeal has been a learning experience. “When we bought this piece of land, we did not know that there were so many regulations,” she admits.

Some of those rumors have worked their way into public meetings. In what must have been one of the more unusual Planning Commission hearings, commissioner Kathy Schmidt asked Lu about a row of “magic mirrors with incantations written on them to conjure evil spirits” facing a neighbor’s home. Lu said the mirrors were meant to scare predatory birds away from kittens, chickens and the temple garden.

“So you’re trying to protect your vegetable garden?” Schmidt asked.

“And the kittens,” Lu replied, eliciting chuckles from the dais.

County Planning and Development director Kirk Girard shakes his head when asked about the supposedly magic mirrors and other hearsay. “I have to look at this project, at any project, with blinders on,” he says.

He gives the temple’s critics credit for documenting the violations and making their case in a thorough appeal. But the rest, from a bureaucratic view, is a non-issue. “The neighbors thought that this record of past violations ... was a character reference,” Girard explains. “But it’s not our job to make a character judgment.”

Reid Lerner, the temple’s architect, says the opposition has been petty, xenophobic and anti-religious.

When Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory hired him 20 years ago to design a $10 billion nuclear fusion facility, he says, the community’s pushback was firm but rational.

“Not so in this case,” he says of the Canh Thai Temple. “In my 40 years as an architect, I have never seen this level of anger over a project, and I don’t see it as being warranted.”

The appeal comes before the county Board of Supervisors on Feb. 9. Girard’s staff has recommended upholding the Planning Commission’s decision.

A do-over cost the nonprofit several thousand dollars. “I have been scared for my safety,” Lu says, wringing her hands. “We have been bullied.”

Temple members tried to avoid this, she says. They held an introductory meeting with the community upon Master Huy’s arrival to establish rapport. At first, people would wave at the monk, who would respond with a dimpled smile or a thumbs-up. But in a matter of months, tensions erupted into physical confrontations. “They put us under constant surveillance,” Lu says. “Always taking pictures, taking notes, calling police.”

The dispute took a personal turn in early 2013. Some neighbors said they found a letter in their mailboxes penned in Vietnamese by a woman who claimed to be the monk’s estranged wife. The letter’s author, Lan-Anh Tran, said the man they knew as Master Huy married her under his legal name, Tuan Van Nguyen. Two years after the nuptials, she continued, the monk lost his job at another temple—possibly because someone learned of his forbidden marriage.

In 2008, Master Huy went on to found the Canh Thai Temple. Around this time, the letter alleged, he began dating a young widow after providing funeral services for her husband. “By the end of 2009 when [Master Huy] already obtained his green card and wanted to divorce me, he informed me he had fallen in love with another,” she wrote, according to a translation of her letter. “I was very disappointed and angry.”

The day after Christmas in 2009, Tran said she went “to pick a jealousy fight” with the monk, who allegedly choked her. Hoping to expose her husband as a hypocrite in violation of his purported asceticism, she asked the monk’s landlord to walk her through his home. “I took the landlord to [Master Huy’s] room to witness: half-eaten meat pizza, an open bottle of Heineken, and a container of pornographic DVD’s,” she wrote. “I also retrieved intimate pictures of [the monk and his mistress] from his camera and later distributed them to the followers … so they would know the hidden face of this lustful Master Thich Duc Huy.” Records confirm that the San Jose Police Department dispatched officers to that address that night. “The suspect choked the victim’s throat with one hand and covered her mouth with the other to prevent her from screaming,” according to police. The District Attorney filed but dropped a charge

Water District CEO Resigns under Pressure

BY JOSH KOEHN A statement released by the Santa Clara Valley Water District last week put a positive spin on CEO Beau Goldie “retiring/resigning,” but let’s cut to the chase: He got canned.

The 31-year district employee, the last seven of which had him at the helm of the nearly $400 million public agency in charge of water for 1.9 million people, got too comfortable. It was as if the rules didn’t apply to him—or his buddies within the district, or their husband’s companies—and he played fast and loose with taxpayer dollars. In the end, it cost him his job.

Goldie’s decision to go peacefully is a bit of a surprise. There was word he was refusing to sign a release in which both sides would agree not to sue one another. A bitter divorce would

have been entertaining, perhaps, but fruitless for all parties.

A CEO should be many things, but they shouldn’t be too proud to admit mistakes, especially when those mistakes involve taxpayer dollars.

Goldie was far more concerned with protecting himself and his long-term colleagues than shepherding public funds in a transparent, responsible manner. He also used the district’s attorneys to block requests for public information. Multiple times Goldie and district counsel Stan Yamamoto have teamed up to prevent the release of documents that suggest or explicitly state the CEO violated district rules. The latter includes a written opinion from late 2014 by attorney Leslie Orta.

The district has also refused to release

information related to a “firewall” agreement for Melanie Richardson, a district administrator who happens to be married to an owner of RMC Water and Environment, a company that bids for and wins big-dollar consulting contracts with the district.

It turns out, there is no “firewall” agreement, according to sources in the district. A leaked internal document from 2011 (available online) states Richardson has had a conflict of interest in the district’s dealings with RMC, despite Goldie’s insistence for months that everything was done perfectly.

Goldie insisted on fast-tracking contracts to RMC because of the drought and apparently got another approved before being pushed out the door. We’ll follow up on that.

BY THE NUMBERS San Jose lives to work rather than the other way around. That’s the takeaway from a survey of 3,000 gainfully employed adults by British Airways, which begins service to San Jose in May. San Jose workers take just 13 days off a year compared to 14 days enjoyed by their counterparts in Los Angeles and 17 in New York City. Part of the reasons cited stem from workload, which appears a tad more burdensome for folks in the purported capital of Silicon Valley. Half of San Jose’s respondents said they had too much to do to even think about using up their vacation days. Only 40 percent said as much in L.A. and the Big Apple. Of those San Jose workaholics who did take time off, roughly half admitted they still contact coworkers on vacation compared to 39 percent of San Franciscans. The airline released the survey results to promote round-trip package deals to London, Barcelona, Edinburgh, Dublin, Madrid, Paris and Rome. But one reason San Jose has no life, collectively speaking, may have something to do with the region’s cost of living. When it takes a six-figure income to afford even a modest abode, vacation seems like wishful thinking.

San Jose Ethics Commission Drops Charges San Jose’s Ethics Commission voted 3-2 last week to toss out charges against 20 candidates who unwittingly broke local election laws.

Virtually the entire City Council— including Mayor Sam Liccardo—came under investigation for failing to report late campaign donations. The issue arose last year when commissioners fined Councilman Manh Nguyen $10,000 for missing campaign filings.

Vestiges of downtown San Jose’s retail past spring back to life

R

eading about Sufi mystics in the crumbling relics of Delhi, India, triggered me to think of Park Avenue in San Jose. To be more specific, while ingesting City of Djinns

by William Dalrymple, which is about his years in Delhi, certain passages hit close to home.

In the prologue, for example, he confesses that the ruins of Delhi are what fascinated him. No matter how

often planners colluded to create new colonies of gleaming concrete, crumbling towers, old mosques, abandoned ruins or ancient tombs would suddenly appear, intruding on the city blocks, the golf courses and the roundabouts. Even though much of the old city from centuries or even decades ago had been destroyed by violence, with many people forced away after Partition, old buildings— just like spirits—often came out of nowhere, even after they were pushed out for shiny new constructions.

The physical and the temporal aspects of Delhi always seemed to merge. Despite the repeated

destruction of the city, pieces of it always seemed to reincarnate.

Such has always been my attitude around here, especially when the urban blight exploration junkie typed out his greatest hits from Auzerais, Stockton Avenue or along that hideous stretch of Camden near Highway 17. This time, however, the old ghosts, the djinns, emerged on a weird stretch of Park Avenue heading eastward from Race Street through an old mile of forgotten San Jose. When I ingest cosmic passages like those of Dalrymple, they immediately manifest themselves as San Jose passages, whether it’s through time or geography.

Venturing east from that intersection, any explorer would set his sights on Pueblo Viejo Imports. This miraculous place used to be downtown a decade ago, but, for whatever reason, it luckily escaped the city’s endless crusade to convince the comfortable classes to

move back downtown in search of inner-city recolonization. At that time, the Redevelopment Agency told me, new furniture places downtown— Black Sea Gallery (now Ross Dress for Less) and the original Pueblo Viejo Imports (now Original Gravity)—were “bellwether tenants,” designed to kickstart retail in the neighborhood.

Predictably, that never happened and both eventually left. Now, Pueblo Viejo sits right next to another indie diamond, Bigsby House, featuring Japanese shampoo inspired by the tea ceremony. One block over, there’s an abandoned building where the Vedanta folks used to give Sanskrit lessons. How’s that for serendipity?

Just like in Dalrymple’s City of Djinns, pieces of old San Jose continue to resurface in various places, if one looks hard enough. The djinns, as well as the businesses, are like spirits, which is why this particular stretch of Park Avenue is so awesome. For the non-adepts, it’s half a mile south of the area of Recycle Books and Art Boutiki, both of which are also refugees from downtown for the same reasons.

Walking this stretch—and one must explore it on foot to get a proper perspective—is like experiencing five different pieces of five different eras of San Jose history, all gloriously cobbled together. It’s akin to summoning the Ancients if one temporarily escapes the homogenous high-rise developments not too far away.

The rest of the street, as it leads toward downtown, presents a beautifully incongruous hodgepodge of retail and residential that could only have emerged in organic fashion.

No bureaucratic cabal of real estate creeps could have devised an area more interesting. It is here that odd retail sits between random Craftsman bungalows. Scattershot Victorians intersperse with a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training grounds and a preschool.

Odd apartments sit above a corner market while other blocks feature more indie retail and still more Craftsman bungalows. There always seems to be a side parking lot leading to something else.

Finally, the entire street would be incomplete without Leather Masters, a San Jose institution for more than 20 years, and the Eritrean Community Center. Let us hope that the djinns of old San Jose continue to resurface. The urban blight exploration junkie will be looking for them, wherever he roams.

THE MYTH OF SUPER TRAFFICKING With no evidence of a Big Game-related spike, the crackdown on trafďŹ cked humans more often than not targets consenting adults BY JOHN FLYNN

Sex trafficking, Durham’s alleged crime, has become a major focus of Bay Area law enforcement agencies in recent months. They’ve been especially fretful leading up to Super Bowl 50 at Levi’s Stadium in February.

trafficking are connected by widespread predictions that hordes of cash-flush chauvinists will swarm into town for the costumed war play, then ravish tens of thousands of women and children— brought here against their will—to quell their surging testosterone.

Plus the market is thin, McNeill said. Road-tripping bros blow their life savings to pack themselves 10 to a room. Many can’t afford paid sex, much less a private space for the deed.

And other potential customers are often family men with the whole brood in tow.

“What are they going to say? ‘Oh, um pardon me, Mabel, could you take the kids while I go to see a whore?’ It’s ridiculous,” McNeill said. “Trade shows.

That’s where we make our money.

There are expense accounts, so the company is taking care of their food and their lodging. They can take their own money and pay for girls. So it’s not sporting events. It’s trade shows.”

Big Game, Big Money The Super Bowl sex rumor helped spawn a moral panic surrounding human trafficking that has become a cottage industry for local law enforcement agencies. Truthout, an investigative nonprofit, estimates that the top 50 anti-trafficking organizations share $686 million annually. In 2014, the California Legislature appropriated $5 million to begin developing “multidisciplinary protocols” to combat human trafficking and following that, annual funding of $14 million will keep the programs going.

These anti-trafficking efforts respond to some truly shocking— though highly questionable— estimates of a worldwide epidemic: 14.2 million people in global labor trafficking, 4.5 million in global sex trafficking, $150 billion in annual profits, up to 60,000 people being brought into the U.S. yearly, and up to 300,000 U.S. children “vulnerable” to sexual exploitation.

And yet, even the most optimistic outlets estimate that a few more than 3,000 trafficking survivors are rescued annually, nationwide.

Citing the disparity between spending and results, sex workers believe that they have become targets of a War-on-Drugs-like crusade, one which operates under the moral banner of trafficking-prevention to fund politically fashionable law enforcement activities at the expense of marginalized communities.

ast Bay rapper Joshua “Five Hunnet” Durham had a busy August. He forced an underage runaway girl into paid sex with him and others, according to law enforcement, keeping her addled with a drug cocktail of weed, cocaine and meth. He advertised her services on social media next to boasts about opening for hip-hop mega-couple Meek Mill and Nicki Minaj, a show that would be stopped after a pepper spray fight between fans.

The problem is it just isn’t true.

Maggie McNeill, an “unretired call girl” and nationally published writer, has been debunking this myth ever since its first rumblings at the 2004 Athens Olympics. At the 2006 World Cup in Germany, human rights organizations estimated that 40,000 prostitutes would flock to the event.

By the 2010 Super Bowl in Miami, the number stayed the same, except it was no longer voluntary prostitutes, but captive women and children.

“It morphed,” McNeill said. “It became a more and more interesting lie. Because force, fraud and coercion are more interesting than voluntary prostitution. Voluntary prostitution, that’s old hat. It’s known. Nobody cares about that.”

The hysteria has led to short-term prevention efforts. During the 2012 Super Bowl, host city Indianapolis passed harsher sex laws, trained 3,400 people to recognize the signs of human trafficking and distributed 40,000 bars of soap branded with the trafficking hotline number to all area hotels.

Authorities made 68 commercial sex arrests; two qualified as human trafficking cases. During the 2015 Super Bowl, Phoenix law enforcement identified 71 adult prostitutes, arrested 27 sex-solicitors and found nine underage sex workers who may or may not have been trafficked.

This patterns holds. A soon-to-bereleased Stanford case study of the last five Super Bowl cities confirms that there is no significant statistical basis for the claim that sex trafficking, or the demand for paid sex, increases around marquee sporting events.

The Super Bowl sex trafficking sirens seem to fly in the face of conventional prostitution economics.

Most sex workers build a cache of reliable clients that provide most of their income through steady yearround visits. For the myth to be true, traffickers would have to travel from event to event, board their captives in hotels at inflated rates, advertise to attract dozens of new-in-town customers, then charge less than the local prostitutes to undercut the competition. All while law enforcement is on its most alert status.

“It’s just not a viable business model,” McNeill said. “From an economic standpoint, the whole trafficking myth is bogus. It doesn’t make sense.”

16 THE MYTH OF SUPER TRAFFICKING “Cha-ching. It’s money. It’s all about more money, more manpower,” McNeill said. “And that’s what it’s all about. This big issue is a boondoggle.”

Maxine Doogan, an active sex worker for 25 years and head of San Francisco’s Erotic Service Provider’s Union, has testified multiple times in front of the state legislature. She suggests that anti-trafficking forces may not be as idealistic as they make themselves out to be. Illinois’ Cook County Sheriff Thomas Dart, in one notable example, bullied Mastercard and Visa into blocking all transactions—even ones for clearly legal and constitutionally-protected activities—with classified ad site Backpage.com, one of the most visited adult pleasure procurement destinations.

The paradox: Backpage, which contracts with Metro and other alternative weeklies for inbound links, voluntarily helps law enforcement track down potential exploiters by turning over any information connected to listings for minors.

Shuttering the site could lead to fewer prosecutions and more abuse as the sex trade is pushed even further underground. Doogan is concerned that such short-sighted political careerbuilding might carry over to Silicon Valley.

“You’re going to see these legislators who are using the trafficking discourse as a means to promote their own star,” Doogan said. “So they can turn around to their communities and tell them that they’re doing something when really, they’re not.”

Still, champions of the crackdown list the Bay Area and Silicon Valley as among America’s highest risk areas for human trafficking, especially labor trafficking, which is three times more prevalent than sex trafficking worldwide. Our region’s ethnic diversity and proximity to ports means that victims can be moved around without attracting suspicion, especially since most victims are smuggled in from other countries.

“What we’ve seen in the majority of those cases, is that the victims know their traffickers—family members, a friend, neighbors—from their home country, and are brought here under the pretense that they’re going to have a job, make good money, and so on,” said Perla Flores of Community Solutions,

a service provider to human trafficking survivors in Santa Clara and San Benito counties. “But once they arrive, it’s a completely different situation. The smugglers keep their passport and put them into a situation where they’re being exploited for their labor and they don’t have the freedom to leave.”

Those in the grip of labor trafficking blend in. They clean homes in middleclass Los Gatos neighborhoods. They serve tapas in Saratoga. They paint nails and sell ice cream and fruit at roadside stands for 12 hours a day.

Doogan says some busted prostitutes falsely claim to be trafficking survivors to beat their charges and gain access to the services.

“For someone selling fruit by the side of the road, they’re seemingly by themselves,” said Sharan Dhanoa, the coordinator of the South Bay Coalition to End Human Trafficking (SBCEHT). “So when you’re talking force, fraud or coercion, very seldom do you find it to be physical force that people can see. It’s very hard for people to see that person as a victim, especially if it’s an adult man. It’s just a lot harder to see those red flags.”

Without grizzled thugs, chained ankles or barred windows recognizable from films, signs of human trafficking are difficult to decipher. Red flags are everywhere and nowhere. They may be as vague as “avoids eye contact,” or as obvious as “shows signs of physical and/or sexual abuse.” Most, however, are either difficult to spot or dismissable as someone having a bad day.

“People just don’t believe it’s happening here,” said Ruth SilverTaube, a law professor at Santa Clara University and SBCEHT partner.

“That’s why it’s harder to detect.

But it’s happening right in our neighborhood. People think it’s barbed wire. It isn’t. Usually it’s just a workplace and you have to look for the red flags. It’s hidden in plain view basically. And it’s an epidemic.”

Well, maybe. Since 2006, Santa Clara County has filed 69 cases of human trafficking but only prosecuted one labor trafficking case, according to a study released last year.

This could be due to the layers of marginalization piled on victims. Most are undocumented workers, who might not know English, American customs or anyone in this country apart from their traffickers. They could distrust the police or Americans in general, given the rise of antiimmigrant sentiment in the US. But human trafficking doesn’t happen just to foreigners. In Silicon Valley, at least, most sex trafficking victims come from America, according to the the county’s Office of Women’s Policy. And as with labor, a majority of survivors report facing multiple hardships like poverty, limited education and past abuse before being trafficked. Once ensnared, threats, drugs and emotional manipulation keep them submissive.

Traffickers come in various forms.

Movies like Taken portray the rare guerrilla exploiters, who operate in an underworld of forced sex with sociopathic venture capitalists, but the more common type is the Romeo exploiter, who opens a tender relationship with the victim before the coerced sex work begins.

Still, there is no catch-all profile of traffickers or victims. Survivor and activist Minh Dang was a straight-A student, orchestra member and soccer star in Los Altos and Mountain View who had been sold for sex by her parents starting at the age of 10, continuing until she broke free from them during her second year at UC Berkeley.

The Gameplan Local authorities are still working to develop effective awareness strategies ahead of Super Bowl 50. Santa Clara County funded and published a 12-minute movie detailing these red flags, but the finished product reeks of amateurish iMovie editing and plods along far too slowly for the modern attention span. It has been viewed less than 900 times under

On Dec. 1, county Supervisor Cindy Chavez led a press conference announcing the plastering of human trafficking awareness signs on all 350 VTA vehicles. The predominant poster depicts a young, light brown-skinned teen with an American flag bandana blindfolding him. Next to hotline numbers read the phrase: “Don’t Be Blind: If you see or suspect human trafficking, say something.”

See what? Say what? And how fast can law enforcement provide a meaningful and effective response?

Press conferences and statements like Chavez’s, such as her claim in the Mercury News that "the scourge of KXPDQ WUḊFNLQJ LV VWLOO SUHYDOHQW throughout our county,” illustrate Doogan’s t star-building observation.

Noble motivations aside, these awareness efforts raise an elected official’s profile, boost overtime for local law enforcement and fund public agencies’ marketing departments.

Still, these measures are considered necessary because trafficking victims cannot identify themselves. So in an effort to do something, anything, about this concealed crime, California shifted its focus to the sex trafficking of minors and passed Proposition 35 in November 2012. Earning 81.6 percent of the vote, it is the most widely supported piece of legislation in state history.

as sex offenders and funnelled any funds received from raised fines into law enforcement and victim services. Most important, prosecutors no longer had to prove force, fraud or coercion for survivors under 18 because they’re too young to consent to any form of sex.

Following this, anti-trafficking efforts jumped. According to SBCEHT partner Silver-Taube, the Bay Area now boasts 39 organizations and 140 people dedicated to providing almost anything a survivor could need. And since 2012, the SBCEHT—founded in 2003—reports to have helped 121 of 185 self-identified survivors of human trafficking. During the last five years, the San Jose Police Department has received more than $1.3 million for its human trafficking task force, but apparently won’t receive any future funding.

Santa Clara County wanted to go even further, after filing just eight human trafficking cases in 2013. The next year the county founded the Human Trafficking Task Force and the specialized team filed 10 cases that year. In 2015, the number increased to 12. For 2016, the budget for the fourperson department is $743,000.

“We’re looking at these people who work in the commercial sex industry first as victims,” said Paola Estanislao, a member of the task force.

“Many of these people did not choose this lifestyle. There is a tremendous amount of empathy from police officers. They don’t want to see these

victims hurt any further. They want them to understand that they deserve better than this, and to help break them out of the cycle.”

Indecent Proposal?

As anti-trafficking agencies patrol websites linked to prostitution, they sweep up voluntary prostitutes in their nets. In 2013 and 2014 the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office arrested five prostitutes total. In 2015, they arrested 31, a more than six-fold increase in half the time. Maxine Doogan fumes over the increased arrests brought on by anti-trafficking efforts.

“A prostitution arrest is a pink slip,” she said. “It forces people to migrate to another area to find work. Anytime you’re a worker in the underground economy and you come into a new area, you are at high risk for a violent act—rape, theft, sexual assault. That’s where you start to see the force, fraud and coercion start to happen. Because of the criminalization, you can easily have a volunteer situation and turn it into something that’s involuntary and you don’t have any recourse, any access to equal protection under the law.”

Compounding this, sex workers are not allowed to legally congregate to pool resources and check up on one another. Plus, under California code, anyone who receives any money resulting from the labor of a sex worker can be considered a pimp, a felony charge punishable for

up to six years in state prison.

“My son, who I was helping through school, would be qualified as a pimp,” said the pimp-free Doogan, who arranges meetings with clients online.

“People that we are living with, and who are benefitting from our earnings in that we contribute our fair share of rent are pimps. Our landlord is a pimp. Our dry cleaner is a pimp. Everybody is a pimp.”

Police probably don’t use this technicality often, but this criminalization can also lead to fraud.

Doogan said some busted prostitutes will falsely claim to be trafficking survivors to beat their charges and gain access to the services. “[Anti-trafficking organizations] are all profiting from the criminalization of prostitution,” she said. “If the police weren’t out arresting people for prostitution and trafficking them into their bogus services, their ass would be out of a job.”

Doogan’s insinuation of deception outrages law enforcement and activists alike.

“That trying to serve survivors of exploitation is a ruse to stop prostitution doesn’t make sense to me,” Dhanoa said. “If anything, we’re encouraging law enforcement to take a victim-centered approach. Prop.

don’t want to be thought of as victims or perpetrators. They want to make money and have that choice respected.

Or at least those active on social media feel that way. There might be a quieter faction of sex workers who aren’t as thrilled with their profession and don’t want to talk about it.

In any case, Dhanoa and Doogan have never met, and neither seems willing to admit the other side might have a point. But there might be a compromise that would serve both sides: decriminalization.

“What decriminalization does is bring sex work out into the open,” said Jerald Mosley, a retired deputy attorney general for California who spoke at a recent hearing. “Now [law enforcement has] to figure out where to go to find underage prostitution or trafficking. But if it’s open and the sex workers are decriminalized, there’s no reason for them to hide. It’s not as difficult for law enforcement to interview folks and to investigate.”

Decriminalization seems a ways off, considering that San Francisco, a mecca of open-mindedness, failed to pass a measure in 2008. But if jaywalkers, speeders and suburban drug abusers escape the jaws of law, maybe prostitutes spotted during trafficking stings can get off with a finger-wag and a few questions about seeing anything suspicious.

Sex workers could be brought into the anti-trafficking crusade—no one knows more about the sex industry, and nobody else stands to profit from the elimination of the supposed bargain prices of sex trafficking. They might be able to fill the data gaps, leading to more efficient prosecution.

Instead, this ideological wall has alienated a potentially valuable ally.

“They don’t care about me. None of those people ever come to me,” Doogan said. “The prostitute nation is alive and well in the Bay Area. We’re very visible. And they don’t have the respect to call me up, and say, ‘I want to save trafficking victims.’ Great. Go save trafficking victims, but you don’t need to do it on my back, and on the back of everyone in my community.”

If Silicon Valley is truly a hotbed for human trafficking, sex workers could help illuminate the dark corners where real offenders hide. But if we ask them for assistance, we’d better ask nicely, then compensate them for their valuable time.

OPPING ON THE bandwagon is the most effective way to manufacture camaraderie. It provides all of the benefits minus any effort or years of dedication. Not to say that Mr. Harada and I are perpetual wagoneers, but we heard a rumble through our many sources that Star Wars is kind of a big deal right now. The movie-themed bar 7 Stars Bar & Grill seemed ripe for a visit.

Mr. Harada and I are men of the world, which makes us generally difficult to deal with. As such, we don’t necessarily have available “dates” on stand-by. So, Mr. Harada invited Brenda, his landlord, and I invited Suzanne, my state-appointed attorney. We took the 23 bus from downtown to Bascom, and walked the short block to 7 Stars, where we met our dates.

The space is not unlike the cantina in Episode Four of the film franchise. There are plenty of tall tables where you can lob off a guy’s arm if he starts to act up.

There’s a sectioned-off pool table area. It has semi-private booths where guests can shoot weird, green

ant-eater guys looking to collect a bounty. Although the place lacked a swinging band, it did feature a digital jukebox, which I assume was set to stun as it blasted young country.

We settled into a comfortable corner that felt like the Millennium Falcon’s living room. I spotted a promotional sign for a popular beer that featured a Harley Davidson, which Mr. Harada quickly dubbed the Miller Light Falcon—an astute observation that made us laugh, and I patted Mr. Harada’s shoulder to show my appreciation while still exhibiting male dominance. Our dates politely ignored us.

7 Stars has several delicious signature cocktails, such as: The Lightsaber, a mix of vodka and Rock Star; Blue Milk, an homage to Luke’s Aunt Beru, which contains lots of chocolate, milk and high-octane booze; and the Root Beer float, an age-old mix of root beer, vodka and

vanilla vodka that’s dropped into a glass of cola. Being a Thursday night, we kept it business—Bulleit Rye for Mr. Harada and Brenda, while I enjoyed a few pints of the last true batch of Lagunitas IPA. Suzanne settled for an ice water. I assumed this was because of the nature of how our relationship started.

Although brighter than I prefer, and with a few more televisions that I can usually stand, 7 Stars is a strong option to get away from the downtown crowds. There’s plenty of parking in the back, and enough activities to comfortably pass the time, such as karaoke, foosball, and Monday night trivia with test tube and jello shots. Its vast displays of memorabilia obviously suggest the spot was created by an enthusiastic group. Mr. Harada and I usually visit places that are established or designed as an endpoint to the night. These places are rigid, unchanging, like Stonehenge. 7 Stars feels like a living space.

The night was moving in a positive direction when Brenda and Suzanne excused themselves to “freshen up.” After an hour of waiting, and 30 minutes of searching, it became clear our dates were called away by urgent matters.

We settled into a plate of six chicken wings, which were the six best chicken wings I’ve ever had. The kitchen staff deserved seven stars. Other options include traditional fried pub fare and an array of burgers.

The lavatory, to my horror, was a vandalized scene. A once-beautiful wall-to-wall painting depicting the Imperial fleet had been defaced with scratches and markers. Every star destroyer—I think there were more than 20—had a big “X” through it.

I assume it was the handiwork of some rebel punk scum.

As we exited to the back parking lot, we came across a beauty to rival our long lost dates—the most stellar artifact of human creation: the Delorean. It stood out like a unicorn parked amongst slugs, in all its stainless steel glory. For a moment, it all made sense.

OJA KITCHEN embodies the food truck dream. In 2011, Alan Tsai and three friends bought a high-tech set of wheels for meals. Their Korean-Japanese fusion coaxes complex ďŹ&#x201A;avors from superb ingredients. After catching the eye of the Food Networkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Guy Fieri, they established stationery joints in Berkeley and San Francisco. Recently, they debuted their third location in north San Jose.

Koja blends Asian, Mexican and American sensibilities into a futuristic cuisine straight from the San Fransokyo of Big Hero 6. The sandwich â&#x20AC;&#x153;bunsâ&#x20AC;? are a culinary innovationâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;steamed rice cakes painted with garlic butter and crisped on the ďŹ&#x201A;attop grill. The crackly, then tender pucks epitomize Tsaiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ability to mingle strange and familiar into high-quality fast food.

When I went, Koja had sold out of the famed Korean short ribs that Fieri described as â&#x20AC;&#x153;out of bounds.â&#x20AC;? I went with their BBQ beef ($7.50). The thin strips of tangy, salty sweetness balanced harmoniously with sesame vinaigrette lettuce and a juicy slice of caramelized pineapple. The Ahi Tuna bowl ($9.95) provides a bed of warm rice sitting below chilly cubes of soft sashimi, sweet, supple seaweed and bitter spring greens coated in a soy-ginger dressing. The chicken taco ($2.95) featured savory meat boosted by wasabi mayo, vibrant cilantro and fried shallots. The braised pork taco ($3.55) had rich cuts braised in miso coconut topped with garlic aioli and a sprinkling of bright orange masago. The fall-apart pork also headlines the Umami Fries ($6.35)â&#x20AC;&#x201D; thick waffle-cuts with the skin intact.

They also offer hot-fried wings ($7.95) coated in medium Korean BBQ or spicy habanero â&#x20AC;&#x153;DMZâ&#x20AC;? sauce. And their strawberry mango mint lemonade ($2.75) is a tad sweet but still tasty.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s worth noting, I have never seen a more crowded standing-roomonly restaurant. The line snaked through the interior, at least 50 deep, never dipping below 30 for my entire meal. Like the food, the interior is abstractâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;hollow red cubes reminiscent of paper lanterns wrap around steampunk light ďŹ xtures with visible ďŹ laments.

Koja Kitchen serves top-notch chow at a boggling speed and price.

Fieriâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s spot-on with his â&#x20AC;&#x153;out-of-boundsâ&#x20AC;? label. For their first production of 2016, TheatreWorks is starting things off with the Northern California premiere of Hershey Felder as Irving Berlin.

Living up to the promise of the title, Hershey Felder (multi-hyphen talent extraordinaire, serving as actor, writer and co-set designer) does, in fact, play the role of Irving Berlin in this musical production. The show tells Berlin's story from his origins in the former Russian empire to his life in New York and features many of his best-known and loved numbers, such as “White Christmas,” “There's No Business Like Show Business,” and “Puttin' on the Ritz.” (VF)

In this 1985 game, a much-hyped matchup between legendary quarterbacks Dan Marino and Joe Montana ended in an absolute drubbing. Montana broke a Super Bowl record by throwing for 331 yards en route to a lopsided 38-10 victory over the Dolphins. The game lives on for quirky, off-the-field minutiae, like Ronald Reagan’s coin-flip via satellite and Apple’s disastrous “Lemmings” ad that depicted mass human suicide to promote software. This exhibit will document the game and surrounding hoopla, while also examining the challenges Stanford faced in hosting the festivities. Speakers include 49ers historian Dave Newhouse. (JF)

TIGERS BE STILL City Lights, San Jose Thu, 8pm, $17-$32 The always engaging City Lights Theater Company presents the South Bay premiere of Tigers Be Still, Kim Rosenstock's “comedy about depression.” The plot focuses on a woman who earns her degree, moves back in with her quirky family and tries to find a way out of a major rut. Plus, there's the matter of catching an escaped tiger from the local zoo. In honor of the two cutest characters in the show—a pair of chihuahuas—City Lights is partnering with the Silicon Valley Pet Project to post an adoption wall at the theater, advertising pets in need of homes. Rembrandt painted himself throughout his life, capturing the ineffable emotions that build in our eyes as we age. Pablo Picasso traced his artistic evolution from his chilly blue period to the interlocking planes of cubism. Then Kim Kardashian fashioned a New York Times Bestseller out of smolders and cleavage. The selfie reflects those primal moments when we must establish that we do indeed exist. This exhibit traces the evolution of this universal style as it examines history, psychology and culture by showcasing works by Bay Area artists like Nina Katchadourian, Erin Feller and Hung Liu. Kirkpatrick will be fronting a jazz quartet at Café Stritch this Thursday, jazz doesn’t seem to be the young musician’s only interest. The trumpeter not only gigs with the likes of jazz great Wynton Marsalis, he was also producing pop music under a pseudonym until early last year.

Given the contrast between his pop producing and his more sophisticated throwback trumpet style, it’ll be interesting to see where Kirkpatrick ends up. (SL)

The amorphous, jazzy hip-hop instrumentalists, Whirl’d, have been steadily rising within the local scene, moving from word-of-mouth gigs to feature performances at major events like C2SV and the 2015 San Jose Summer Jazz Festival.

Their meandering, other-sideof-the-pillow grooves speak for themselves. However, they recently began collaborating with Minneapolis emcee, Tony the Scribe. Tony wrangles with wriggly world issues and delves deep into his split psyche as he weaves his energetic flow in and out of Whirl’d’s slinky beats. (JF)

The work of Franz Schubert, Max Bruch, and Paul Hindemith spans two centuries and is representative of the evolution of the Romantic movement in music.

Bruch is the only one of the three whose time of creation falls squarely within the heyday of the Romantic period, as Schubert also caught the tail-end of the Classical era, and Hindemith started composing a few decades into the 20th century. Emotional expression reigns supreme in the compositions of all three. Tatsuya Shimono will conduct with multiaward winning Ju-Young Baek as the violin soloist. (VF)

The Adicts have been bopping around since the ’70s, initially coming out of Suffolk, England with short, poppy, Ramonesesque punk jams. They caught the Clockwork Orange aesthetic on the upswing and have stuck with it since, dressing in white jumpsuits and bowler hats onstage, with frontman Keith Warren often donning white Joker-esque makeup. Though they’ve expanded their musical palette over the last 40 years and dozen or so records—the most recent of which came out in 2012—they always manage to sound like they’re having a blast. (SL)

Jeff Chang co-founded the indie hip-hop label now known as Quannum projects, interviewed Barack Obama in 2007 for the cover of Vibe magazine and now serves as the executive director of the Institute for Diversity in the Arts at Stanford University.

His new book, Who We Be, draws from the past and present of pop culture to examine the idea of progress in the post-Civil Rights era—a time marked by both racial strife and multiculturalism.

He will be interviewed for a timely discussion of identity by Adam Mansbach, an award-winning author, who is perhaps best known for his vulgar take on Goodnight Moon—Go the Fuck To Sleep. (JF)

‘The Gold Rush’ highlights California’s promise and failings

S

ITTING AT THE edge of the American frontier, California has long been viewed as a land of milk and honey. The Spanish sought mythical cities in the region, but settled for the “saved” souls and forced labor of Native Americans.

The 49ers risked life and limb, crossing the Great Plains and braving the journey around Cape Horn in pursuit of gold.

Most recently, techno-utopians have flocked to Silicon Valley and packed themselves into rented garages,

hoping to write some code worthy of a repartee-laden biopic.

But California’s promise has always been undercut by a far less glamorous reality. For each Golden State success story, there are dozens of tales of failure and aborted attempts at reinvention. In their new exhibit, “The Gold Rush,” the de Saisset Museum hopes to capture this duality.

“This is not a linear historical exhibition,” says curator Chris Sicat. “The artists are presenting timeless issues of the Gold Rush—hope, aspiration, greed, violence and racism. If we’ve learned anything from the original Gold Rush, it’s that few did well. So let us not forget that is still happening today.”

The Gold Rush created California as we know it. Two years after the precious

metal’s 1948 discovery at Sutter’s Mill, more than 300,000 mostly American and Chinese non-natives filled the state.

This influx of population and wealth fast-tracked California to statehood. And by the end of the rush, some $2 billion in today’s dollars would be plucked from the Earth.

But compared to the value of the natural resources and new markets, which sprung up in the wake of the rush, that’s a paltry sum. Levi Strauss, the era’s most famous entrepreneur, now has his name on the $1.3 billion stadium hosting the golden anniversary of the Super Bowl. Though the exhibit radiates amber tones, Sicat eschews works that glamourize the metal itself.

“I didn’t want to seek gold. The gold is California,” he says. “It’s not an object. It’s a place. So you could say water is gold. California water is very important. Or maybe the dirt in California is the real gold.”

But the state’s wealth produced some seamy side effects. As the precious metal became rarer, economic troubles

led to anti-immigrant sentiment and exploitative labor practices. Named after an immigrant labor slur, Coolie

by Jonathan Fung is an installation of eight antique sewing machines stitching swaths of red silk. The red represents bloodshed exemplified by events like the Chinese Massacre of 1871 when a mob of 500 white men lynched 19 immigrants in Los Angeles’ Chinatown The work also speaks to spiritual bloodshed. Callous capitalists recorded astronomical profits while keeping their laborers in squalor. The haunting hum of sewing machines scores the piece and the number eight—symbolic for infinity— prompts the realization that the clothes I’m wearing right now are made under the same conditions.

Elsewhere in the exhibit, Glenn Kaino’s striking The Bridge depicts a suspended string of muscled arms.

The cast appendage belongs to San Jose State alumni Tommie Smith, the black, fist-raising champion of the 200 meter dash in the 1968 Olympics. Kaino considers the image’s meaning that still persists in the ongoing struggle for racial equality, but manifests in new ways— like when Black Lives Matter activist Deray Mckesson sends a fist emoji as a solidarity symbol to select Twitter users.

In the same room, Sicat has placed Not Yet Titled by Alma Allen. Leaning delicately against the ceiling, the work abstracts our state’s outline in a loping 12-foot arc that thickens and flattens like poured water.

Allen’s choice of heavy bronze gives the piece its rigid form, but strengthens gravity’s toppling tug. It’s an accurate state portrait. California’s documented history stretches back only a few hundred years. The dirt and water that made the state so valuable have become more scarce. Despite our young state’s promising beginning, its lasting legacy teeters between becoming a pioneering constant of plenty or a cautionary footnote about greed.

“The moment we see something precarious, the mind gets tickled,” Sicat says. “You’re like, ‘Is it going to fall?’ And I hope we look at ourselves in that way: Are we going to fall? Or are we going to rise to the occasion?”

SPIRAL OUT Mountain View-based Arrow Development was instrumental in pushing roller coaster technology forward.

Head over Heels IT’S EASY TO think you know nothing about Arrow Development.

Aside from a smattering of articles across niche websites, and an out-ofprint book, there isn’t much out there on the amusement design and construction firm, which was based in Mountain View and effectively ceased to exist in 2002. However, anyone who’s ridden Disneyland’s iconic Matterhorn, the Demon at Great America or even the Mini Putt Putts at Happy Hollow, has directly experienced a piece of what the Bay Area company produced over its 50-odd years.

Indirectly, Arrow Development’s legacy reverberates in practically every contemporary amusement park. To name just one: tubular steel roller coaster track, developed for The Matterhorn by Arrow, is now the standard on thrill rides around the world. In fact, opening day The Legacy of Arrow at Disneyland wouldn’t have been the same without Development Arrow, which constructed Autopia, Dumbo the Flying Elephant, Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride and several more.

On a recent, drizzly day, documentarian Kris Rowberry $10-$20 Montgomery Theater, and another of his producers, Robert Ingel, are shooting San Jose B-roll at Happy Hollow in San Jose for their forthcoming documentary, The Legacy of Arrow Development. These theme park obsessives watch as children trace circles in their mini puttputt cars; Rowberry observes that each car is actually two repurposed Ford bumpers, originally welded together in the ’50s by Arrow Construction for the now-defunct Alum Rock Park.

Rowberry, a producer on the film, says he and his team originally set out to to document Arrow Development by simply exploring many of the rides it produced. But as the filmmakers interviewed the people surrounding the company, they began to see the human narrative behind the construction.

“A lot of people said Arrow rides are magical,” says director and editor Nicholas Laschkewitsch. “A lot of them got really emotional about the connections people were able to make with these rides.”

And until now, those riders might not even have known who was responsible.

It’s no exaggeration to say that in many ways, Arrow is responsible for the amusement park industry today, from the boring (product chain management) to the exciting (the roller coasters, duh). The filmmakers have set out to document how four guys from Sunnyvale set all this into motion, in an era before “innovation” was tossed around like cheap popcorn.—Stephen Layton

Neurosis, despair and claymation in Charlie Kaufman’s latest film, ‘Anomalisa’

STRAIGHT-UP Kickstarter-funded anomaly, Anomalisa by Charlie Kaufman (with co-director Duke Johnson) is touching but transitory. It’s a tragic stop-motion animated tale with resemblances to Lost In Translation.

In Cincinnati in 2005, Michael (voiced by David Thewlis) comes to the Hotel Fregoli to address a convention. He’s the author of the

best-selling customer-service text How May You Help Them? This expert in the technology of smiling and selfeffacement is, in a word, miserable— “I think I have a psychological problem,” he confesses to a woman whom he dropped hard 10 years previously for no reason.

The lady in question is Bella Amoroso, and with a name like that, we can expect romance. It doesn’t happen like that—Michael has been married and had a son since the last time he and Bella met. After one last encounter with this love of his life, he returns to his room to view a moment of movie ecstasy on television—the finale of My

Man Godfrey (1936) with a gaga Carole Lombard, dancing in happiness. After he has an anxiety attack that wakes up some of the guests, Michael goes drinking in the hotel bar with two female fans—a big and bawdy blonde named Emily and her shy pal Lisa, voiced by a very endearing Jennifer Jason Leigh.

Voicing this frail stop-motion creature was probably harder work than being QT’s punching bag in The Hateful Eight. Lisa puts herself down for being stupid and ugly. Everything she does, she does gingerly.

That they’ll end up together is plain—Michael needs her, and Lisa is longing to be needed. She has one more attractive quality: her salient feature is that she sounds different than anyone else. (All voices in the film that aren’t performed by Leigh and Thewlis are done by Michael Noonan). The many characters in Anomalisa are all similar,

with unconcealed seams across the bridges of their noses—the fissures make all them all look like they’re wearing wire-rimmed spectacles. Their jaws and cheeks are segmented, too, in a mask of grey-white skin. A clue: the Hotel Fregoli is named after a psychiatric term— “Fregoli Delusion”—the belief that every person you encounter is just one figure, masked under different faces.

There has been some fretting on the Internet about why a movie lacking in cartoony squash and stretch was done in the animated format. (Kaufman had written this story as a play, and then was approached about adapting the play into stop motion.) Animation usually equals exaggeration, but the lively art can be used as a way of removing nuance and facial expression, leaving the viewer with more questions to ponder.

Is Michael’s neurosis self-delusion? Is he just one more prowling married man exaggerating his melancholy, in hopes of attracting girls? Are his terrors and nightmares merely reflections of his guilt for straying from his wife?

Perhaps more important is this question: do you really want to find out? There are passages in Anomalisa as adroit as the best of Kaufman’s daydreamy scripts, such as Adaptation, and Being John Malkovich. The delicacy of touch and focus is visible throughout. Odd that one of the most tender lovemaking scenes of the year involved puppets—seen in their anatomically correct, awkward coupling a decent distance away from the bed. The eroticism of the scene is cast with pathetic human sadness.

We’re watching a couple borrowing happiness against later sorrow.

But as per Lost in Translation, this is a story that might be more keen to a celebrity than a film audience: people who encounter a taxi driver’s probing questions, or a bell boy’s persistence, or having personal space encroached upon during a commute on a plane.

Michael’s problems as an Englishman in a too aggressively friendly, too insanely cheerful America are, in essence, a famous person’s complaints about the price of fame. It’s the old story of flinching through all the unwanted attention, like raw oysters shivering under the lemon juice.

NOW PLAYING 13 HOURS In 2012, four American personnel were killed in the Libyan city of Benghazi—two first at a gated compound where the U.S. ambassador Christopher Stevens (played by Matt Letscher) was temporarily staying, two others later at a secret CIA compound.

The firefight has been understood by conservatives as evidence of a massive policy failure by the Obama administration. It’s also been seen as an opportunity for Republicans seeking to make some hay out of a disaster. You are guaranteed to know less about the debacle after you see Thirteen Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi then you did when you went in. Director Michael Bay aims to drive the thought out of your head though massive firepower and chest-bumping. The group of soldiers, Navy SEALS and contractual hires by the CIA are masked with beards and mirrored sunglasses; the one gentle and sensitive face we can read belongs to a buffed up John Krasinski (you know, Jim Halpert The Office). Bay is the opposite of a director like Paul Greengrass, who can see through the chaos and give you an idea of targets and trajectories. Bay likes stuff up front and the visuals are, thus, shallow. The love of impact is so strong in Bay’s films that it goes into the smallest moments: a boot thumping into the asphalt, a metal lighter tossed slo-mo to splash into a pool of gasoline (would a poverty-stricken Libyan throws away a metal cigarette lighter?) and the exchanges of studly dialogue: “I hate to piss on your party, ladies…” and “They’re all bad guys until they’re not.” This is the kind of film in which a solemn memorial service shares space with video footage of a Doritos-eating dog. IP MAN 3 Hong Kong, 1959: the respected wing chun teacher Ip Man (Donnie Yen) has settled down with a wife and a son. A tattooed foreign devil (Mike Tyson, speaking demotic Cantonese and demonstrating a still lethal punch) seeks to seize the school where Ip Man’s son is studying. The object is a land-grab that both the British colonial police and the local thugs are abetting. Further trouble comes from a rival teacher (Zhang Jin) who seeks to be recognized

as the grandmaster of wing chun.

Meanwhile Ip’s wife Cheung (Lynn Hung) develops cancer. Her illness is not a subplot, it is the plot: clearly director Wilson Yip wanted to make a movie, not just a kung fu movie. Paced slower than the ’90s HK actioners, it honors the good old days of Hong Kong mayhem with a guest appearance by portly Kent Cheung, as usual a cop. Fight scenes take place everywhere from a boatyard and an elevator, where Ip Man has to protect Cheung from a Thai boxer assailant. Yen is one of the most understated performers in martial arts cinema. He radiates serene bravery, an attractive pose that doesn’t change when he has to hold about 100 armed and dangerous fighters, or when he gets into a punch-out with the still very intimidating Tyson. With Danny Chan as Bruce Lee. (Opens Friday at the Camera 3) (RvB)

“WORLD OF TOMORROW” Fremont-born Don Hertzfeldt’s Oscar-nominated short animated film looks like nothing you’ve seen, but there are roots in the 1959 Oscar-winning animated short “Moonbird” by John and Faith Hubley. There, the independent animators used the recorded voices of their young sons as the script for a midnight adventure. (The 2D style of the Hubleys’ animation— flat, with ever-changing abstract backgrounds—also leads to what Hertzfeldt is doing in his first digital film.) Emily (the voice comes from Hertzfeldt’s 4-year-old niece) receives a visit from her cloned future self (voiced by Julia Pott), who has returned from the end of the world to have a brief chat with the young babbling “Emily Prime”: in effect, her grandmother. Comedy is essential to the story of their lives: the tale of a brain-dead clone who becomes a poignant museum exhibit in a Damien Hirst-like vitrine; the problems with discount time travel, and quotation from the poetry of lunarian robots. There’s some desperation and anguish in this story, as this member of the last generation on earth is trying to make herself remembered by a child too young to understand the greater picture. (A question puzzles watchers of sci-fi: why do futurians always have upper-class British accents?) Deservedly likened to Chris Marker’s “La Jetee,” this unusually imaginative, poignant and artistically silly short may prove to be a minor masterpiece of science fiction film.

IN YOUR FACE In ‘Son of Saul,’ the camera keeps a tight focus on one man’s struggle to survive Auschwitz.

The Son ONE OF THE 10 best films of last year—and one of the finest films ever made about the Holocaust—is Son of Saul, the 2015 Grand Prize winner at Cannes by the debuting Laszlo Nemes. It’s impressive in many ways, but the film’s successful blend of the closely focused with a leafy, transcendental finish is maybe the most startling. Shooting in 35mm film, Nemes takes a monochrome subject and gives it vivid, lurid color, as the expressionist green of stricken faces is sometimes encrimsoned by the constant fires.

“Bela Tarr was my school,” Nemes has said. The great Tarr’s seriousness, spaciousness and focus on the greatest calamity of the 20th century are reflected in this distillation of 36 hours at Auschwitz.

Geza Roehrig plays Saul, a “sonderkommando”—a Jewish trustee in the death camp, who is given the grisly task of greasing the wheels of the death machinery. During his shift, scrubbing bodily fluids off gas chamber floor, Saul discovers something doubly remarkable: a boy who is still alive despite the Zyklon-B … a boy who is apparently his own son. While the boy dies, something in this shut down man comes alive.

Using favors and pleading, he claims the body in hopes of burying it with the

traditional Jewish prayer, the kaddish, to be performed by a rabbi.

“Apparently” is the right word to describe the kinship, since there’s some doubt among Saul’s fellow inmates about the identity of the boy. And there’s a counterpoint. The war is already lost, and the Nazis are accelerating the process of killing, intensifying the violence and fury of the camp.

Son of Saul’s model might be the Dardennes Son of Saul Brothers’ film The Son, which followed a subject R; 107 Mins. from a distance of about Camera 3 three feet, as he carries out a mysterious, perhaps lethal errand. The superb Roehrig may have the thousand-yard stare of a traumatized man, but what he sees is in very close focus—we’re in his own personal bubble, and the carnage around him is all out of focus. He’s beyond shock.

He’s slumped, trying not to be a looker or a listener (people not minding their own business get shot faster). Seeing the Shoah through his experience reveals more of the camp than you can imagine. Saul’s seizure of his own humanity through this insistence of a proper burial is a grand act of defiance. —Richard von Busack

ALKING TO guitarist Ricky Dover, Jr., is a study in contrasts.

On the phone from Nashville where he and the rest of his blues-glam trio, The Tip, call home, he’s all Southern gentleman. On stage, the Knoxville native is an axemangling fool. With a shaggy mane and mirror shades, he’s the epitome of rock excess— louche, lithe and leather-clad.

And the same goes for each of the 11 songs on The Tip’s self-titled album.

“This music is about the fun of playing live,” he says. “We recorded pretty much all live. No overdubs, no click tracks.”

Before Dover even met the Carl brothers—Benny (lead vocals/ harmonica/rhythm guitar) and Dixie (drums)—he was jamming with fishing buddies in a cover band. “We just wanted to play what we liked, no pop-country shit, no Luke Bryan, none of that.”

One time, backstage at popular Nashville club The 5 Spot, Dover saw a sartorially accomplished guy setting up amps. “I was standing there and

we just saw each other and I was like ‘Hey man, cool hair.’ It was an instant connection from that point on,” he says with a laugh.

Judging by the group’s G&Rinspired fashion sense, The Tip might have stepped off Los Angeles’ Sunset Strip circa 1989. But far from glam metal, the band’s swaggering sound toggles between high-octane rock and grimy blues. A third of the songs on The Tip feature Benny blowing a mean Hohner—a bold return for the oft-overlooked instrument.

Besides the fact that the band’s home base can be “kind of clique-y music-wise,” Dover says the real challenge is that it’s crawling with an intimidating level of talent. “On an average night in Nashville you’ll find someone downtown just killing it,” he says. “So having such high caliber musicians on every street corner can be discouraging. But at the same time it inspires musicians to stand out

more.” Or at least it inspires the latest crop of rockers. “There’s a lot of new bands we like to play with now, like Hotel War and Feedback Revival and Blackfoot Gypsies.”

Though The Tip certainly aren’t inventing a new sound, they still play their scuzzed-up pool bar stomp like they’re just discovering it for the very first time. Conviction like that can’t be faked, and that level of passion is infectious, even in the most bone-basic riffs, like the three descending power chords of the first single, “Welcome To The Night.”

Literally half the songs on the record—including “Welcome”—“Outta Control,” “Ride Tonight,” “Favorite Sin” “Double Fistin’” and “More, More, More,” are paeans to partying.

While the songs come off as no-nonsense, stripped-down rock & roll, there is some theory underlying the riffage.

The mostly self-taught Dover acquired the bulk of his guitar chops in bands in Nashville and during a stint in Atlanta.

However, he rounded out his education at Middle Tennessee State, which has a music program popular with locals.

“It really helped when I learned the Nashville Numbers system,” he says, referring to a methodology for writing music based upon basic chord progressions. “We learned whole songs by shouting out numbers like: ‘1, 4, 5 … ready? Go!’” he says.

“Honestly, knowing the language helped in songwriting, because you learn what makes a good song.”

The technique is great for musicians who like playing fast and loose, as changes to songs can be made quickly and improvised on the fly. That’s perfect for The Tip—a band that is currently doing everything themselves.

They don’t have a record deal and are self-funding their current tour, but they don’t mind.

“Right now we just want to get out there and play,” Dover says. He takes the view that if the group keeps rocking hard enough, success will follow. “We give 150 percent every night—that’s the first thing you have to show people.”

Fearsome Threesome SIM CASTRO, leader of San Jose band The Albert Square, says in some ways his group's new album, I (Assume I) Know What I'm Doing, is “a record about fear.”

Over the course of its 13 tracks, Castro ponders, among other things, “fear of growing up and not having your shit together; fear of being perceived as not having your shit together; fear of being perceived that you DO have your shit together when, in fact, you can’t tell which end is up; fear of mortality; the fear of being alone; the fear of wasting your youth; and, probably most of all, just being paralyzed by the fear of making poor life decisions.”

The trick to facing those fears, he says, “seems to be acknowledging them and learning how to move forward, accepting the good along with the bad, and making better choices or more informed choices the next time around.”

As the frontman, singer and guitarist of The Albert Square, Castro has been the one constant in the group, which has seen several personnel changes since its inception in 2007. The current lineup includes Castro’s longtime collaborator Spencer Taplin on drums and James Baker on bass.

and was recorded by Jack Shirley at The Atomic Garden in East Palo Alto. The songs, with their sometimes frantic drums and often The Albert Square fuzzed-out guitars, are Jan. 22, 7pm reminiscent 1010 Ruff Dr., San of Neutral Jose Milk Hotel.

Some are slow burning (“One Seventh of the Week”); some verge into more straightforward indie-pop territory, such as “Galesburg, IL.” Track nine, the exhilarating “Agnes (I Assume I Know What I'm Doing)” is a catchy, Pixies-esque standout that was previously released on an EP and is referenced in the album's title.

Castro finds the San Jose music scene, including punk band Hard Girls and the socially conscious community involved with the Think and Die Thinking festival, inspiring. “I strive to just keep up with my peers and all the amazing things they do,” he says.

To smooth out an inconsistency like this, we typically grab for whichever explanation helps us feel good about ourselves—which is maybe why you describe yourself as “happily married” to a man who acts like the clitoris is a rare exotic bird.

Give the guy some time. He’s (understandably!) slow to do a cannonball into a new relationship, but you say he is “loving” and seems “excited” to be with you. So, sure, he may be on the fence, but he doesn’t seem to be on the run. Until his answer to “What are we doing here?” is no longer “Not sure yet,” you might ask him to drop the likes of “lady friend” and just use your name.
