Last summer, Vietnamese media mogul MANH NGUYEN trounced TIM OROZCO in a special election to fill the District 4 seat, which covers Berryessa. It was an unusual race, as Nguyen was accused of having multiple wives and living out of the district, while Orozco had to answer questions about multiple drunk driving convictions. Due to term cycles, Nguyen already has to defend his seat this year and the two could square off again, although no challengers have yet to announce their candidacy. Since moving into City Hall, however, Nguyen’s office has set the benchmark for odd behavior on the 18th floor. He has had at least six people leave the office in less than six months, in part because the councilman prefers to hire only parttime workers. Nguyen apparently does this not only to test new employees’ abilities, but They also because he wants Did to ensure staff has What? time to volunteer on SEND TIPS TO his campaign. Staff volunteering for campaigns is nothing new, but sources say there’s been pressure on some employees to take leaves of absence to work full time to get Nguyen re-elected. The councilman’s closest advisers, JONATHAN PADILLA and BRYAN DO, say that’s not true, but they’re both currently volunteering at the moment. Padilla will return to the office next month, but Do—reportedly a constant presence on the 18th floor last year—has never been employed by the councilman’s office or campaign. And yet, somehow, he’s also never made an appearance on Nguyen’s calendar.

It would have been a routine traffic stop settled with a few-hundred dollar ticket, but the driver’s prior offenses— missed court dates, unpaid fines and a DUI conviction four years prior—resulted in a misdemeanor charge of driving on a suspended license.

Monzon, who announced his marriage to county education trustee and state Assembly candidate Darcie Green weeks later, has been ordered back to court Feb. 8 for an arraignment.

If convicted, he could end up in jail or sentenced to weekend work while his wife campaigns for the 27th Assembly District seat.

Last week, Metro uncovered disturbing details about Monzon’s multiple domestic violence convictions and extensive history of battering women, despite recent efforts by him and his wife to portray him as a feminist. The 35-year-old personal trainer has spoken at political forums and sought public attention, projecting a persona that omits mention of his violent past.

On Dec. 11, Green posted a picture of Monzon to announce that he would take her surname.

“Today my husband changed HIS last name to Green,” she wrote in a Facebook post peppered the hashtags “#WhatGenderRoles,”“#FeministFriday” and “#ThisIsWhatAFeministLooksLike.”

In the past week, however, Metro has reviewed newly available court records with more troubling details about Monzon’s past. By the latest count, he has eight criminal cases to his name, one of which has been expunged. Three are for minor offenses and the rest involve violence against women. At least three of his former partners have filed restraining orders against him, some multiple times and one as recently as 2013. Of his five children by three women, he has partial custody of two. Another son, who’s 11, asked not to see him. His first two children, who grew up without his parenting or financial support, wanted to reconnect but were removed from his custody in September by social workers.

Since Metro’s report, Green has gone on the offensive, calling reports about her husband’s battering of women a “sexist” attack by “male dominated media” on her public policy work. She acknowledged Monzon’s misconduct

campaign events without a license.

On Tuesday, Green called her husband an example of how people can break cycles of violence and atone for past mistakes. “Rick is addressing his legal issues, including the suspended driver's license,” she said. “For many people in my district, and particularly for Latino males, the financial and societal consequences of one interaction with the justice system can quickly spiral into a cycle of negative interactions with the law that many find difficult to break.”

But Monzon has had far more than one run-in with the law, and the nature of his crimes coupled with Green’s reputation as an outspoken feminist puts her in an unprecedented situation in local politics. Metro reached out to other candidates in the 27th Assembly District race but they declined to comment.

It seems unlikely that Green, who served as the 2015 president of Democratic Activists for Women Now (DAWN), planned to address her husband’s record, or that she even knew the extent of his abuse before the news reports surfaced.

Several people close to the candidate said their shotgun marriage in Nevada—a month before a staged engagement proposal on a San Jose Summer Jazz Fest stage in August— raised a red flag, as has Monzon’s ubiquitous presence on the campaign trail, which has made it hard for friends to find a private moment with Green.

In a message sent to members last week, DAWN’s board of directors called Metro’s article about Monzon’s crimes against women an assault on Green’s reputation by “sensationalizing the issue of domestic violence.”

Not everyone in DAWN’s leadership signed off on the rebuttal, however.

Barbara Keegan, a Santa Clara Valley Water District trustee, resigned from DAWN’s board last week. Though she gave no reason in her email, sources say it was because the board’s response downplayed the issue of domestic violence.

Other members of DAWN say they will not renew their membership because of how the organization handled the issue. A substantial number of unsubscription requests followed the email DAWN sent out last week, according to one of the group’s trustees.

“All of us are on the same page trying to watch out for [Green] as best we can,” a close friend says. “But [Monzon] won’t let us get too close to her anymore.”

but, despite an open criminal case and an ex-girlfriend’s active restraining order, called it a thing of the past.

A case file made available last Friday provides an account of the early morning of Jan. 14, 2006, in which a woman who identified herself as Monzon’s wife and mother of two of his daughters woke to the sound of her cell phone vibrating. She walked out of the bedroom of her mother’s house, where she was staying to get away from her husband, and saw Monzon sticking his head through a bashed-in hole in the front door.

“You better open this door right now!” Monzon yelled at her, according to the woman. “Either you are gonna die or I’m gonna die!”

The woman told him that she couldn’t find the key, and then ran into the bedroom where her daughter was asleep on the bed. Monzon punched through a glass window of an adjacent bedroom, police said. The baby girl began bawling. The woman’s mother arrived just as Monzon approached the front of the home again.

“Get the fuck out of here!” she reportedly yelled at him. “I’m sorry,” Monzon replied, according to police.

“You know how I am when I’m drunk!”

Monzon was arrested for violating a restraining order, which required him to stay at least 300 feet away. By then, he had racked up several protective orders and domestic violence convictions dating back to his first marriage in high school.

According to police, he would whip his first wife with belts and a gray printer cable until her skin split and welted.

Early in their relationship, according to court records, he learned to hide his abuse by helping her apply makeup if she got a black eye. He began relegating his blows to her arms, legs, back and back of her head. “Cuz I don’t want anyone else to see anything,” he admitted during a police interrogation in 1999. “She’s my wife, you know.”

In the years since, Monzon has gone through multiple batterer intervention programs. This time, he says, he’s a changed man.

“I know that I’ve had a lot of issues with anger and being controlling,” Monzon conceded in an interview last week. “I feel horrible. But I’m 100 percent better now.”

And yet, Monzon continues to run afoul of the law. Since her own car got totaled in a collision last year, Green has shared a vehicle with her husband, who had been driving around to work and

DUI Charge for Sheriff Deputy A Santa Clara County sheriff’s deputy was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving after waving a gun around in a Jack In the Box drive-through, authorities said.

Police arrested Benjamin Lee at 2:40am Sunday at the fast food joint on El Camino Real in Santa Clara. Lee, Benjamin Lee 33, was booked on charges of driving under the influence and brandishing a weapon, according to police.

Off duty at the time of his arrest, he was placed on paid leave. The incident is the latest scandal involving the Sheriff’s Office, which has come under scrutiny after an inmate’s beating death, the subsequent arrest of three jail guards on suspicion of murder and racist texts exchanged by staff. —Jennifer Wadsworth

$5K Reward Offered to Catch Art Box Vandal

BY JENNIFER WADSWORTH To catch the culprit responsible for defacing San Jose’s art-adorned utility boxes, the city will offer a cash reward for information leading to the perpetrator’s arrest.

For the past couple months, someone has painted an ugly gray primer over at least seven utility box murals painted as part of the San Jose Art Box Project.

On Tuesday, the City Council agreed to offer $5,000 to the tipster who helps police find the vandal (or vandals) responsible.

“The perpetrator’s vandalism has robbed local communities of the unique work of numerous volunteer artists and disrupted the character and spirit of the areas

they were located in,” Councilman Pierluigi Oliverio wrote in a memo to his colleagues. “These art boxes provided cultural and social distinction to the communities they were located in, and were created and coordinated by the efforts of civic-minded volunteers.”

Some passersby have reported seeing the perpetrator, but assumed the person was preparing the art box for a new mural. According to the Mercury News, the latest target was a box near the corner of Hamilton and Pine avenues. The serial vandal slathered primer over a painted homage to the region’s agricultural roots.

worse than run-of-the-mill tagging.

“It’s vandalism to make the streets more bland,” Ben Sutton wrote for the art blog Hyperallergic.

“Let’s call it ‘blandalism.’”

The art box project, launched in 2011 by activist Tina Morrill, relies not on city funding but private donations. Artists participated largely for the exposure and to beautify the community. About 80 art boxes are scattered throughout San Jose, according to the project’s Google Maps page.

Earthquakes Try to Settle NFLSoccer Lawsuit A youth soccer league ousted from its fields by the NFL may have found a new place to play and resolution to a lawsuit over the displacement.

For the past two weeks, the Santa Clara Youth Soccer League has been fighting the city of Santa Clara and the NFL in court after the latter took over public fields to build a media village for Super Bowl 50 at Levi’s Stadium.

The lawsuit contends that the city inappropriately handed over the fields, leaving some 1,500 youth athletes without a home.

Earlier this week, however, with a judge poised to issue a ruling on the case, the San Jose Earthquakes offered to share two fields at Avaya Stadium with the youth league. The soccer club said it would keep the cost at a minimum.

Mike McGee’s Studio Bongiorno pulls poetry out of raw truth

HE STORIES and poetry of Mike McGee are like laughing yoga therapy for the terminally awkward. Several years ago, after he’d already won slam poetry contests on national and international stages, he released In Search of Midnight.

Inside this tome we get graveyard shifts at suburban super-drugstores, love poems, humility, childhood, travel and much more.

It’s a loud, boisterous celebration of life that pours out of the pages.

McGee journeys around the continent on a regular basis, and upon resurfacing in his native San Jose a year ago he wound up gigging in Santa Clara. What would possibly cause such a poetic crime to happen? Well, right across from Mission Cemetery one finds Studio Bongiorno, a monumental establishment catering to anyone outside the establishment.

It’s a place preordained for poetry and storytelling. There’s artwork, incense, skulls, broken sculpture, seats from Candlestick Park, a coffin, prosthetic limbs, canopies, nuts, bolts, tools and lots of artspeak emerging on

a daily basis. It feels like a theater prop shop gone gloriously awry.

Studio Bongiorno is where McGee launched the Burning Tale monthly storytelling series one year ago. The next installment erupts Saturday, Jan. 23 from 6-11pm. Anyone with a tale to tell can show up and force-cram his or her soul into the ears of the audience. That’s one of Mike’s lines, by the way. Mike functions as the host, the bent emcee, so to speak, occasionally offering his own stories or poems in between the other participants. Weather permitting, the show takes place outside on the patio.

Poetry is welcome, but the emphasis is on the story as a form.

“I tell people all the time—I can ask anyone I know—to do a poem, but nine times out of 10, they’ll say, ‘I’m not a poet, I don’t have any poetry,’” McGee says. “But I can ask anyone to just get up and tell a story, or an anecdote, and nine times out of 10, they have one.

Tell us about that time you almost married a dog in Vegas.”

In the course of putting on events, McGee says, he discovered that everyone digs storytelling, but it’s not just a matter of hearing a story. People love being told a story. As host and performer, McGee loves how people silence themselves when their favorite storyteller in the group begins to launch another wicked tale. But the story has to be true. That’s why Burning Tale can be so much fun.

“The only prerequisite for my stories, for Burning Tale, is that they have to be true, or at least as true as they can possibly be,” McGee says.

“And you should be the star of the story. Or you should at least be a character in the story.”

It gets better. A few months back, McGee introduced a workshop component to the experience. Interested parties with stage fright or those who aren’t used to speaking in front of an audience can learn how to express themselves. The featured storyteller or poet at the Burning Tale event usually leads the workshop. This time around, the workshop takes place the following day, on the afternoon of Jan. 24.

Plenty of spaces throughout the valley could host a storytelling event, but Studio Bongiorno really seems a perfect fit, not only because the graveyard sits nearby. The venue presents an eclectic, vanguard and beautifully gloomy environment in which to perform. It’s not just a “space” or a “gallery.” It’s an environment. The props, décor and morbid accoutrements seem like part of the audience—a traditional campfire storytelling session taken to the next level.

San Jose endlessly banters about music scenes and art scenes, so it’s about time to emphasize a writing scene. McGee and Studio Bongiorno go together like pen and page, like sound and fury.

“I would like writers to really discover that Studio Bongiorno is a good place to come on a Saturday or a Sunday,” he says. “It’s a quiet, inspiring, peaceful, weird, occult-y kind of spot for people to come, sip tea, and write their asses off.”

A day on San Quentin’s death row

W

e’re at the end of the tour, and nobody has the key to get into the lethal-injection chamber. That seems a little ironic in the moment. It has been a long day at San Quentin State Prison for reporters and corrections staff alike. The four-hour media tour of the death row facilities has gone on for six, and along the way, all day, there have been skeleton-type keys opening big metal-and-concrete doors, numerous ID checks, sign-ins and sign-outs at the three facilities that house the nation’s largest population of the condemned.

Broken System San Quentin is a place of many contrasts, and one of the more starkly poignant examples I encounter on the Dec. 27 tour is the difference between accessing the death row facilities and the lethal injection chamber. It provides a handy metaphor for the status of capital punishment in California.

Gaining access to the condemned men in their cells requires reporters to pass through a set of security gates, sally ports and various other clearances, ID checks and metal detectors. It takes a while, just as it takes a while—25 years, on average—from the time an inmate is convicted to when he is executed, leading to a broken capital punishment system that, in 2014, U.S. District Judge Cormac Carney said was effectively a “life sentence with the remote possibility of death,” as he declared the California capital punishment regime cruel and unusual because of delays.

That ruling was vacated by the U.S Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in San Francisco in November on technical grounds—even as it did not rule on the constitutional issue Carney raised. Another hurdle, another gate to pass through before anyone’s executed here.

A proposed 2016 ballot initiative would recognize the costly and interminable delays that characterize the system and end capital punishment outright. A similar ballot measure, Proposition 34, was beaten back by death-penalty advocates in 2012 by 52 to 48 percent.

And yet to gain access to the lethal injection chamber, guards just open an innocuous-looking door that faces out to the pleasant San Quentin grounds, steps away from the employee canteen and just a few yards from the highly fortified main entrance—and you’re in, just like that. A pro-death penalty referendum also scheduled for 2016 seeks to expedite the appeals process to get the executions flowing again.

Meanwhile, 724 men (and counting) sit on death row at San Quentin. There are between 12 and 16 whose last appeals have been exhausted, says Robinson, but there’s no time frame for the resumption of executions. “The if is the question.”

Attitude Adjustment The Adjustment Center, a 102-cell facility built in 1960, is the solitary-confinement tier of San Quentin and most restrictive housing in the prison—and possibly the state.

“A/C” is home to the worst of the worst offenders, not all of them condemned, though about 80 percent are. It’s a selfcontained prison within a prison, and the guards aren’t even allowed out once they check in for their shifts. It’s the deepest hole to be found in San Quentin.

This is the first stop on the tour, and it’s immediately apparent that we’re going to need more of those green anti-stab jackets; there just aren’t enough for all the reporters

and cameramen, so some from other tiers are collected and made available as we squeeze into an A/C hallway and jostle our way forward to the gate.

The reporters can’t all go on the tier at once, so we proceed in shifts through a metal gate, having already passed through two other gates, and that’s not including the first three gates we passed through at the tour’s outset. Anyone who isn’t already wearing eyeglasses has to wear a face protection mask to guard against any bodily excretions flung our way by inmates; we all wear the protective gear until we check out of the prison with our invisible “Get Out of Jail Free” wrist-stamps, as Robinson calls them.

No media person has seen the inside of one of these solitary-confinement cells in more than a decade. A few of the cells are empty, doors swung open, and the officers let me step up to the entrance and enter a foot or so into the cells, keeping a watchful look or, one might say, glare. There’s an austere and off-putting peaceful feel that belies the daily dangers and stresses on both guards and prisoners alike; a creepy, treacherous monasticism prevails on this insular tier. But that can change in an instant.

These men here are forever in a routinized and highly choreographed shuffle from one cage to another, and some are “indefinitely in leg restraints” as they are transported from cage to cage, Robinson says.

Two adjoining cells give a sense of the kind of privileges one can earn, whether an inmate is on death row or serving out a lighter sentence elsewhere in San Quentin, whose population hovers around 3,700.

There are two kinds of prisoners that transcend the Level 1 to Level 4 classification system (the A/C is Level 4), Robinson explains. There’s Grade A and Grade B. Grade A follows the rules; Grade B doesn’t.

One cell has a TV and walls filled with thong-wearing Latina pinups, while the next one over is absent any visible personalized touches beyond rolled-up white socks and a manila folder or two. According to online prisoner resources, death row inmates went on hunger strike here in 2013 in order, among other things, to get the same privileges the state affords the non-condemned. Robinson says that the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) gives equal access to earned privileges, regardless of one’s classification. But nobody in San Quentin is streaming Netflix.

The TVs are hooked into antennas and reception is limited to network television.

Inmates can also listen to the radio. They spend all of their time in these cells except for three-and-a-half hours of yard time, three days a week.

And now here we are, about 20 members of the media and a handful of San Quentin prison officials, including warden Ronald Davis, milling around outside the door to the never-used lethal injection chamber.

Waiting.

Lt. Samuel Robinson is the chief public information officer at San Quentin and has been our lead guide for the tour. Robinson says he worked on death row for 10 years before moving into his public-affairs role, and throughout the day he is greeted by inmates, a couple fist-bumping him as we make our way to and through the three areas that house the condemned: the Adjustment Center, the North Segregation Unit and the East Block, whose 520 beds house the majority of death row inmates at San Quentin.

“They live in a world,” Robinson tells reporters that morning, as he searches for the words, “an alternate world, the era when they left the streets ... it freezes them in limbo.”

While we wait for the missing key to arrive, Robinson talks about how he was the corrections officer who handed off the last three condemned inmates to the team of officers charged with putting them to death.

Robinson’s last words to the inmates were always the same. “I wished them good luck.”

He defers on the question of his personal feelings about capital punishment. As a state worker, Robinson’s not going there. He wished them good luck, that’s all.

And so it was that on Dec. 13, 2005, Crips co-founder Stanley “Tookie” Williams (who had been nominated five times for a Nobel Peace Prize and once for a Nobel Prize in literature) was executed. Triple-murderer Clarence Ray Allen was next; his luck, and his appeals, ran out on Jan. 17, 2006.

A month later, Robinson gave Michael Morales the same send-off. Two hours before he was scheduled to be put to death on Feb. 21 at 7:30pm by lethal injection, longtime Santa Clara County judge Jeremy Fogel, a federal judge since 1998, halted the execution after court-appointed physicians refused to inject Morales with intravenous barbiturates.

It will be 10 years in February since Morales lucked out, and 10 years since anybody has been executed at San Quentin.

SOLITARY MEN Some inmates in San Quentin’s Adjustment Center are confined to their tiny cells 24 hours a day.

This morning, there’s only one inmate in his cell willing to talk to reporters, and it’s Sunset Strip killer Douglas Clark. Described by Robinson as a “prolific serial killer,” Clark was associated with Carol Bundy and, rumor has it, with her relative, Ted. Clark says he has been in solitary confinement for 33 years and that “this is actually the best facility that they have.” Nobody visits him, he says, but he makes the best of his time.

Reporters press their mics against the vent of his closed-front cell door and shout questions at the inmate, who shouts right back. He wears a straw hat and gives great quotage to the line of media waiting their turn. “You’re a reporter’s dream,” one reporter tells him.

Tale of Two Cells

San Quentin is really two prisons; its general population is among the least violent in the California prison system, even as it houses the most violent offenders in the state.

It’s a prison that benefits mightily from a generally empathic Bay Area demographic with a volunteer cadre of 4,000 people who provide all kinds of programming, and Davis says the programs are what keep the violence in check.

And while San Quentin is famous for its Shakespeare productions and other reform-minded efforts at

rehabilitation, little of that is available to the condemned. About a hundred of the condemned have access to hobby and craft programs, but that’s about it as far as programming goes, Robinson says.

There are no restorative justice programs for the condemned, either, no opportunities for inmates to meet with survivors of their mayhem, Davis says, because of security issues around inmate-civilian contact, a key aspect of restorative justice.

The contrast between general population and the condemned plays out in the functioning and upkeep of death row itself. Prison labor built the new $850,000 lethal injection chamber, and prisoners are also at work on a project to retrofit cells in San Quentin’s Donner building to expand death row capacity by 97 beds.

That unit will open this month or next, Robinson says.

As we stand in the A/C, Robinson tells me about another inmate here whose penchant for violence ended the careers of four corrections officers.

We’ll meet him soon enough.

We leave the tier and wait in another sally port before gaining access to the A/C yard, which consists of a couple dozen single-man “walkalone” cages with sinks and toilets, and one larger yard for inmates who have mingling privileges. There’s only one inmate in there this day, one of about 10 men in the cold rows of cages— pacing, talking among themselves,

doing pull-ups, mostly in white shorts and sneakers, though a couple wear prison-issued sweats. It’s a little chilly.

The protocol is a little unclear, so I set off into the wilderness of cages and approach a very large and shirtless Latino man.

I tell him it’s a media tour of death row and that I want to interview him—but I’ve apparently gone a little off the reservation, as an officer tells me to get back with the rest of the reporters, who have gathered around another cage.

“They’re censoring you!” the man shouts as I rejoin the group— then subsequently passes on the opportunity to sign a required consent form to talk with reporters. A little while later, Robinson tells me that was the very inmate who ended those corrections officers’ careers. He seemed so friendly for a second there.

Reporters are gathered around the cage that houses Robert Galvan, a seriously bad man. “I deserve to be here,” Galvan says as he talks about life on the Adjustment Center tiers, where there is “absolutely zero privacy.”

The book on Galvan is that he had so many assault with a deadly weapon charges, including one for assaulting a corrections officer, that prosecutors stopped pursuing them after stringing together three consecutive life terms.

His capital crime occurred while he was already locked up: Galvan killed his cellmate.

The pro-death penalty referendum on the docks for 2016 seeks to end the practice of housing the condemned in one-man cells, to save money.

California spends almost $200 million a year in costs associated with its stalled capital punishment regime.

I ask Galvan what it feels like to be on death row in a state that almost never executes anyone. “It’s like being left on a shelf,” he says. “I feel like that’s torture.”

There are more than 500 men here, and they shout down from the upper tiers, “They got us in restraints like we are animals!” “We want to come out of the handcuffs!”

American ags hang from sky-high rafters in both wings of East Block, and guards walk the gangway as reporters are set loose on the tier to ďŹ nd inmates to interview.

I walk down the tier and stop in front of the one inmate I had hoped to encounter today, Jarvis Jay Masters, the Buddhist author of 2009’s That Bird Has My Wings. It’s a heavy story about Masters’ upbringing and his path to death row, with harrowingfunny stories about the violence of life among the condemned and Masters’ journey to a monklike and meditative existence on death row.

Masters had just recently ended a 27-day hunger strike prompted, he says, by a chronic absence of capital crime lawyers at the prison. He ended up weakened and ill and on an IV at Marin General Hospital, and only ended the hunger strike when the warden came to see him. “Guys are dying and nobody is up

here saying, ‘You are a human being,’ Masters says. “Nobody says, ‘Tell me your story.’ The lawyers don’t even know their clients’ names, their stories, their suffering. It felt like there was a purpose behind the hunger strike. It helped me to understand suffering.�

Masters is at work on his third book (he also published Finding Freedom, a collection of prison writings, in 1997).

This one is going to be called Out of Bounds, a ďŹ ctionalized retelling of his early 1970s childhood, he says, that will explore the abuse and molestation he experienced as a youth. “Out of Boundsâ€? is the single most prevalent stenciled signage on the walls of San Quentin. The signs inform inmates that they’ve entered a restricted area.

Masters, a native of Long Beach, shuffled in and out of foster care homes as a child, which led him to a life of violent crime as a young man.

He spent 21 years in the Adjustment Center, and turned to Buddhism and meditation to help survive the intense psychological strain of long-term solitary conďŹ nement. He has a dedicated support network on the outside that includes renowned Buddhist author Pema ChĂśdrĂśn, and a legal team at work to get his conviction overturned.

Some inmates, Masters says, have come to a kind of peace on death row; they’ve outgrown their criminality, but it can leave them in an awful and hopeless limbo. “Some people have made the transition,� he says, “but there are more suicides than executions here.�

Masters’ Buddhist practice and meditation have kept him grounded in the face of a death sentence handed down after he was implicated in the 1985 murder of prison sergeant Howell BurchďŹ eld. There are all kinds of ways to torture yourself on death row, which include dwelling on “the contradictions in your life,â€?

Masters says, “the callings that you will think about for the rest of your life.â€? Whether an inmate is innocent or guilty, “death row means you are in a lot of trouble, and you sit with that—my writing, that is how and where I found my greatest reection of that fact.â€?

Masters, 52, was sent to San Quentin in the early 1980s to serve a 10-year armed robbery sentence and then joined a prison gang. A few years

into his term, he was implicated in the death of Burchfield and charged with sharpening a piece of bed frame into a shank, which was then fashioned into a spear, using rolled-up paper.

Two other inmates were given life sentences without parole for their roles in the murder; Masters got the death penalty.

I ask him about his writing process, and Masters enthusiastically pulls out a white five-gallon bucket from the back of his cell. That’s his writing chair.

A large board propped on his rack serves as his desk. Then he shows me his pen.

When he was in the Adjustment Center, Masters’ writing implement consisted of a floppy pen tube sans its plastic outer shell. He’s been in the East Block since 2007 and takes apart the pen and shows me how it used to be. He gets a regular pen here.

Masters laughs as he shows me the other key piece of his writing kit, a tan crocheted hat. “Don’t tell anyone, but I need my writing hat. I can’t write without it.”

Masters’ many supporters are adamant that he is innocent of the capital charge that landed him on death row, and with a positive ruling from the California State Supreme Court he may find himself in a whole new situation by February.

In the meantime, there’s a lot of oldfashioned Buddhism non-attachment that has to be brought to bear on the outcome. On Nov. 15, the court heard oral arguments from his defense team and from prosecutors.

“The case is still alive,” Masters says.

The clock is ticking on the court’s 90day window to issue a ruling. He could be looking at a new trial, or more of the same.

“Life changes one way or the other,” Masters says. “One thing I have to do is be in the center; that’s where my practice is. Being in the cell, it is so small and you get pulled—it is scary.

You feel you are being pulled one way and then you are pulled the other way—the fear of wanting to stay in, the fear to get out—and so it is just so powerful to stay in the center.”

says, was given around the time Scott Peterson was in the news as international anti-celebrity du jour.

Interest was high. Peterson was universally reviled for killing his eight-months-pregnant wife and saying he was on a fishing trip in San Francisco Bay. The TV cameras haven’t been in here since his conviction, but San Francisco KALW radio reporter and author Nancy Mullane was given access to death row for a series of reports she produced between 2012 and 2014, and which culminated in the book Life After Murder, which wasn’t about death row, but rather five inmates who Mullane believed deserved a chance at parole.

When the book came out, Mullane was invited on The Today Show, cohosted by Matt Lauer. The interview was a revolting exercise in the media’s anti-celebrity obsession, and it’s clear from the segment that Mullane never would have been invited on the show had she not inadvertently captured Peterson in some photos she took on the North Seg rooftop yard. She didn’t even know it was Peterson she was shooting, but one of the photos captured him smiling and shirtless, playing basketball.

We are up on the North Seg rooftop yard and, wouldn’t you know, there’s Peterson with his back turned to reporters. He and another man, an African American of less anti-celebrity stature, stand that way the whole time reporters interview other inmates. The condemned of North Seg are granted tier time to mingle with inmates, and they can spend several hours a day, from 7:30am to 1pm, in the rooftop yard, with its stunning views of San Francisco.

There’s sheet metal fencing around the yard, which the warden says is there mostly to protect the privacy of inmates from binocular-wielding gawkers— another of the many contrasts within San Quentin: Where there’s no privacy among and within the condemned, there’s an effort to shield them from the eyes of a prying public.

This anti-celebrity dynamic is in the air all day long, and we the media play into it. There is a peculiar thrill being so close to the condemned, especially when some of them are so totally irredeemable. But the anti-celebrity

Serial killers occupy a peculiar social strata in the American imagination, as do upstanding citizens who who commit shockingly heinous crimes like Peterson—it’s the last thing you’d expect of them. So Peterson turned his back, but Steven Livaditis availed himself to reporters on the rooftop yard. Livaditis killed three people during a 1986 jewelry store robbery in Beverly Hills and almost immediately admitted to his crime. He’s been in the North Seg unit for almost 30 years.

His death row days consist of reading the Bible and trying to “live the life of a good Christian,” he says. “I have tried to make amends with the families.”

Does God want him here? “Good question.”

Quiet Time The tour is a big production for the prison, and there are many moving parts—both at San Quentin and around the politics of capital punishment. Beyond the expansion of its death-row facilities, in October the prison marked the first anniversary of its court-mandated and first-in-the-nation Psychiatric Inpatient Program (PIP).

The 40-bed facility was built at a cost of $620,000 to address the stark reality that numerous men have been driven completely insane during their decades of limbo on death row.

Our prison guides show us the inside of the group therapy rooms that comprise part of the treatment, and once again, wherever the condemned of San Quentin go, whatever their

mental health status, they are held in cages. Each of the small holding cells has a steel stool.

This unit feels peaceful in much the same way the Adjustment Center has an eerie sense of calm. One inmate stands at a big window looking out with his hands behind his back. The rooms are larger here, and there’s a dictionary and a board game or two on a shelf.

The state is getting its death house in order for whatever might come next. It was recently announced that a new single-drug execution protocol—a lethal dose of barbiturate—will be administered to the condemned, amid a national focus on lethal injections that have gone awry because of multi-drug cocktails, and questions about the medical ethics of killing the condemned.

Enter the Sepulchral The key has arrived and the guards open the door, and just like that, we’re in there, the state’s new, untested lethal injection facility. It’s a bare, two-room chamber, save for 12 chairs and a gurney containing numerous black straps. A big clear window separates the chairs from the gurney. This is the only part of the tour where cameras are banned, as though we’re going to steal a soul by taking a photo of the deathbed.

Again, I find myself taken by how a facility associated with such violence can have such a strangely peaceful and sepulchral elegance to it, this clean, austere chamber of death, deliverer of the haunted and broken and malevolent.

At South Winchester BBQ in San Jose, owner Eric Ingram continues the legacy his family began at Trail Dust BBQ in Morgan Hill. Every morning, pitmaster Brent Neault oversees the dry rubbing and oak wood smoking of each premium cut of meat. This multi-hour process imprints a distinctive pink ring, a flavor-laden lipstick stain from the smoker’s long kiss. The most popular items of the daily batch of beef, pork and chicken start disappearing around 7pm.

They serve two-meat ($19), three-meat ($23) and four-meat ($27) combo meals that come with a side of homely beans, potent garlic bread and a lightly dressed minced coleslaw that surpasses the usual mayosoaked variety. I split the four-meat and a half-rack of ribs ($19) with a friend and left with a serious case of the itis.

The tri-tip and brisket both boast thick pink ridges and succulent flavor well worth the extra seconds of molar-gnashing. The pulled pork offers rich, fall-apart strands that smack of carnitas. The chicken breast is tender, massive and benefits greatly from a dunk in their signature “hogwash,” a spicy, vinegar molasses dressing. But the St. Louis-style ribs are the magnum opus of this establishment. The hours of smoking cultivate a thin mahogany crust around the pliant pork. The meat comes loose with a gentle tug and satisfies primal bone-cleaning urges without hassle.

Inside, there’s a marble bar, sheet metal ordering/pick-up windows and a long central table for communal dining. They offer a rotating cast of 10 on-tap beers bought directly from top-notch California breweries like Societe, Hess and Fieldwork. If none of those tickle your fancy, their fridge is stocked with ritzy brews from around the world.

In 1933, kidnappers snagged Brooke Hart, the oldest son of Alexander Hart, a prominent businessman in San Jose. The captors, apparently unaware of the way a kidnapping works, killed Hart with a cinder block then dumped him into the San Francisco Bay. After a few futile ransom requests, police tracked down the killers amid much fanfare. Inflamed by the senseless violence, Governor James Rolph withheld the protection of the National Guard. A mob of thousands broke into the jail and hung the captors in St. James Park, the last confirmed lynching in California. Swift Justice details this harrowing chapter of local history. (JF)

Tauheed Epps enjoyed moderate success as Tity Boi—half of Playaz Circle. The rap duo’s biggest hit was “Duffle Bag Boy,” the Lil Wayne-assisted ode to profiting greatly from the slanging of illegal wares. In 2012, he changed his name to 2 Chainz and howled his new moniker before each of his scene-stealing verses on “F*ckin’ Problems,” “Beez in the Trap,” and the G.O.O.D. music magnum opus, “Mercy.” He won B.E.T.’s Rookie of the Year and has only continued rising within the hip-hop hierarchy.

He packs his inspired bars with undeniable charisma as his flow zig-zags around outlandish boasts, extravagant descriptions and rags-to-riches posturing. (JF)

Like an indie-rock fairy tale, Surfer Blood enjoyed instant critical darling status. The West Palm Beach, Fla., band’s debut, Astro Coast, is chock-full of tunes just begging to soundtrack the post-meet cute montage in Noah Baumbach’s next rom-com-dram; and don’t even try to listen to the group’s 2013’s follow-up, Pythons, unless you’re prepared to have one of its many earworms stuck in your head for days. With shimmering guitars, echoes of the Pixies and a shambolic vibe, Surfer Blood’s latest, 1000 Palms, proves they would have been as sensational in 1966 as now. (AL)

Author Dennis McNally’s painstaking chronicle of the Grateful Dead’s every move in the mid-’80s—the fruits of which became A Long Strange Trip—provided many valuable insights into the Dead cosmos, but that’s not the only reason to attend this Harker Speaker Series event. McNally is a trenchant observer of America’s counterculture movements (Desolate Angel, his 1979 history of the Beats, landed him the Grateful Dead gig in the first place). His latest, On Highway 61: Music, Race, and The Evolution of Cultural Freedom, delves even further into the socio-political forces that shape so much of what we call pop culture. (AL)

John Williams is a national treasure. The composer’s hallowed score helped make Star Wars an international sensation by adding a properly epic sonic atmosphere to the galactic saga. Audiences have been treated to some of his new work with The Force Awakens, but another example of his unparalleled prowess is Steven Spielberg’s Raiders of the Lost Ark. The jaunty compositions highlight the adventures of the swashbuckling archaeologist, Indiana Jones, as he traverses foreign lands and boobytrapped shrines. Symphony Silicon Valley will be performing the score alongside a live screening of the film to fully display the majestic power of one of Williams’ finest works. (JF)

She has collaborated with major artists like Timbaland, Jennifer Lopez and Chris Brown. Martin Luther King Jr. has been mythologized like few historical figures. His fervor and dedication acted as the central engine for the civil rights movement. His efforts helped to diminish the racial inequality rooted in American slavery. He has his own holiday now, but many forget the radical, real King agitated the establishment as much as modern Black Lives Matter protestors. This fictional account of King’s last day puts him in conversation with a feisty, young maid in his hotel room. They confront King’s humanity, impact and lasting legacy on our nation, fusing theatricality with spirituality to reveal the man behind the myth. (JF)

One of the greatest plays of the last century, Arthur Miller’s masterpiece meditation on the American dream follows Willy Loman in his unfulfilled quest to make sense of a frustrated career.

Blurring the line between fantasy and reality, and between past and present, Loman strives to find some meager success in his fading days as he laments the mediocre achievements of his children. The play has run internationally, been revived six times on Broadway and won Tony, Drama Desk and Pulitzer awards. It is the ultimate American tragedy: an average men fails to achieve his extraordinary dream. (JF)

Currently celebrating the 30th anniversary of The Final Countdown with its original lineup, this band was grinding it out before and well after the hit-packed 1986 chart-topper, so there’ll be no shortage of nostalgia buttons pushed tonight. Few bands not from the U.S. or U.K. delivered the guilty-pleasure goods back then like these Stockholm natives.

No matter how distracting Joey Tempest’s incessant mugging, Final Countdown’s fourth single “Cherokee” showed sensitivity to Native Americans, and fist-pumper “Rock The Night” is still the best pop-metal anthem of all time. (AL)

The Scream AHHGG! The work of Jim Phillips, who created the world-famous ‘Screaming Hand’ for Santa Cruz Skateboards, will be honored at Empire Seven Studios.

ITH ITS TOOTHY, agape mouth; wildly undulating, midscream tongue; and desperate, clawing fingers, everything about Jim Phillips Sr.’s Screaming Hand demands attention. The cool electric blue of its skin, contrasting with the red drops of blood, jagged bone and flailing sinew, are easily recognizable as one of Santa Cruz Skateboards’ longtime logos.

Created by Phillips in 1985, it is arguably one of the most iconic pieces of graphic art of the last 30 years—and certainly makes the short list for the most famous pieces of skateboarding art, ever. Now, after three decades of inspiring skaters and artists alike, the Screaming Hand and its legacy are on a 30th anniversary world tour, and will be making a two-week stop at San Jose’s Empire Seven Studios.

Born in San Jose and raised all over the South Bay, Phillips had been toying with variations of the hand since the late ’50s. The final image of the Screaming Hand came into being after Phillips was commissioned to design something for the speed wheels department of Santa

Cruz Skateboards and he thought of his old standby doodle.

“I thought how artists through the ages have used the hand to convey feelings and express emotions—so I knew I was onto something,” he says, “but mostly I liked the raw and blunt statement it was making of unbridled angst.”

Rawness is at the heart of Jim Phillips’ work. His art is a panoply of comic book boldness, irreverence and surreal mindscapes. Even though Ed “Big Daddy” Roth, Robert Crumb and newspaper comic art were big influences on his early work, he says it was Salvador Dali and Walt Disney who really tied his style together.

The rise of skateboarding, and more specifically the idea of the skateboard as a canvas, allowed Phillips’ bold but crude aesthetic to shine through.

“It just turned out that skateboarders have embraced art more than any other sport or activity,”

Phillips says. Whereas surfing had an innate natural majesty, skateboarders had to build their own beauty out of the concrete landscape. “They didn’t have a wave, just unglamorous dirty bricks and asphalt. So they painted the bricks and asphalt and they painted their boards. That’s all they had, their art, their music and their skateboards.”

Phillips’ art is so famous that it has suffered the ultimate compliment: being stolen—most notably in an incident with fashion designer Jeremy Klein. “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery," says Phillips of the controversy.

The enduring legacy of the Screaming Hand and Jim Phillips is worldwide.

Artists from around the globe who have contributed their version of the Screaming Hand includes Andy Jenkins, Judi Oyama, Benny Gold, Thomas Campbell and veteran skate artist Sean Cliver. This list also includes many legendary pro-skaters turned artists like Steve Caballero, Natas Kaupas, Jason Jessee, Steve Olson and Mark Gonzalez.

These re-imaginings, on display at the Empire Seven show, take many forms, including polished woodcuts, screenprints ceramic sculptures, spray paint on panel, and pen and paper. The show ranges from nearly abstract deconstructions to surreal and expressionistic tributes. The Screaming Hand 30th anniversary exhibit is the brainchild of Bob Denike, president of NHS, Santa Cruz Skateboards’ parent company.

“He did an amazing job coordinating all the many elements it takes to present the work of 50 artists to 25 cities of the world”, says Phillips.

These days, Phillips is 71 years old and easing out of the art grind. But his bold, expressive style has become something of a family business. Both his son and grandson have taken up the mantle.

“Jimbo is making a good name at Santa Cruz for his awesome graphics as well,” Phillips says, referring to his son. “And my grandson Colby, who is 14, has already been taking commissions.”

What does he tell them about a career in art and design? “Just do what you like to do and hope for the best.” Phillips says. “Then, whatever happens, at least you are doing what you like to do.”

Red Horse: Drawings of the Battle of the Little Bighorn Jan 16-May 9, Free Cantor Arts Center, Stanford

If you weren’t a Native American, the argument probably holds weight.

On the other hand, the new exhibit “Red Horse: Drawings of the Battle of the Little Bighorn” at the Cantor Arts Center proposes an entirely different perspective. Red Horse was a ledger artist and a Minneconjou Lakota Sioux warrior who fought against Custer and the 7th Cavalry at the Battle of the Little Bighorn in June 1876.

There are 12 drawings on display. Most of them depict soldiers on horseback with various lengths of Abraham Lincoln-esque facial hair.

One drawing even gives each white soldier a stovepipe hat along with his chinstrap beard. At first glance, they bring to mind Asian scroll prints with brightly drawn, multicolored horses without the background information of a field or a sky; or even the work of a young, aspiring artist with a head full of cowboys and Indians and a new box of colored pencils.

In context, however, these drawings take on much greater significance.

These are not idle doodles of a bored grade schooler in social studies class; rather they are a soldier’s tabulations of carnage.

The Native Americans are also moving across the field—everyone is in motion. Few of the paintings depict the conflict itself: Red Horse simply and effectively draws what he sees, and some of what he sees is teepees, a dozen bloody soldiers (some of them decapitated), headdresses. In some ways, his art is as impartial as an illustrator in a modern courtroom.

Regardless, if the exhibit doesn’t make as much of a cultural impact as the Custer biography, at least Little Bighorn is represented in some small way by the Sioux themselves.—Jeffrey Edalatpour

Strong performances anchor ‘Lamb’— a film about misguided romance

I

’M GOING TO describe the premise of a movie, and if your first reaction to that description is: “there is no way in hell that I will watch this,” I understand. Every viewer has a deal breaker, a film about a subject they wouldn’t watch; it might be cruelty to animals, home invasions or blood of any sort.

Ross Partridge’s risky film, Lamb, is about an 11-year-old girl who goes

travelling with a 47-year-old male stranger into the countryside of Colorado. This subject would make a Jezebel essayist out of many a viewer.

The actors play it as a desperate love—lovers on the lam(b), as in film noir. If Tommie (the remarkable Oona Laurence) is the lamb of the title, does this make 47-year-old male (writer, director and star, Ross Partridge) a smiling wolf ? In fact, it’s the other way around—this kidnapper is named David Lamb.

Bonnie Nadzam’s source novel has a hard-boiled, city edge—Tommie is described as “a freckled pig,” a plump little reject; David Lamb as the kind of

older 50-ish slob anyone would avoid.

The difference between the source and the film is as severe a change of tone as I’ve seen since Steven Shainberg’s Secretary and the far more tough Mary Gaitskill story from which it was derived.

David Lamb’s bitter old father has just died of alcoholism. After the funeral, Lamb is trying to go back to his job, but his boss recognizes Lamb as a man on the verge of a breakdown.

(As the boss, Joel Murray gives us a measure of Lamb’s normalness when he’s not under strain. It’s superior character acting. Give this underpraised sibling of Bill Murray an inexpensive suit and a cup of coffee to hold and you’ve almost got a movie right there.)

Lamb encounters Tommie where she’s hanging around the parking lot of a Family Dollar store with some fellow school-skippers; one of her friends dares her to bum a cigarette from the lone

man. Lamb decides to teach Tommie a lesson about talking to strangers and lures her into his car.

Taking the girl back to her home, Lamb tells Tommie he’s thinking of a trip to the cabin out on his father’s land.

Without telling her mother, Tommie slips away with this stranger. The older man is as much of a gent as a kidnapper can be—he gives his illegal travelling companion privacy and a way to get back home. But the two are forced to delude people they meet, which causes a wedge. And then Lamb is tracked down to his father’s cabin by Linny (Jess Weixler), a lady from work with whom Lamb had a no-strings affair.

Partridge’s approach is lush and strangely sweet. It transfers the book’s Chicago to sad exurban Denver— the camera keeps returning to a commercial strip of fast food outlets and bus benches. It resolves itself in pastures underneath the Rockies, with mile-long trains in the distance.

Both the photographer Nathan M. Miller and the startlingly poised acting by the young Laurence balance the looming threat of physicality with ridiculous romantic delusions.

What goes on here is as warped and fraught as the encounter between Sybil and Seymour in J.D. Salinger’s “A Perfect Day for Bananafish” or the arrival of Magwitch into Pip’s life in Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations. But these unequal partners consider their vacation a torrential romance—the delusion of a cracked, middle-aged man meeting the feverish imagination of an 11-year-old girl. Tommie is too young to naturally assume that adult males are only interested in one thing.

The dynamics of the film are like Lolita—there’s even a scene where Tommie gets a fever, like Dolores Haze—but the friendship of this abject man and this neglected girl has a threat that keeps you hooked.

Partridge’s Lamb is so committed that you almost believe there’s a mitigating side to his psychotic idea to haul a city girl out to see the beauty of the prairie. The movie is a kind of feat for Partridge as director, but it’s Laurence who consistently surprises the viewer with an understanding that goes far beyond her years.

Florida death-metallers Traitors keep it groovy on ‘Night Terrors’

HEN A BAND names it latest record Night Terrors, it sounds— well—metal. But for Traitors vocalist Tyler Shelton it’s not about that.

His girlfriend suffers from the sleep disorder nyctophobia and considers herself lucky when she gets an hour or two of quality sleep at night.

As such, the topic is close to the singer’s heart. And so, at the urging of

Traitors’ drummer, Stephen Arango, Shelton decided to make it the EP’s running theme. “I wanted some fantasy elements, but also be about this very real thing,” he says from the back of a van somewhere on a Connecticut highway.

“It has that trippy feeling of just too much coffee on two hours of sleep.”

The Sarasota, Fla., quintet plays a particularly punishing brand of metal—walking a bloody, rusted garrote wire between the subgenres of slam and deathcore. However, unlike many slam bands—who downtune their guitars and vocals into a chaotic, chromatic and absurdly guttural sludge—Traitors’ brutal brew really

pops. Instead of note-filled solos that come off like stop gaps, guitarists Alan de la Torre and Mikey Ingram conjure creepy, atmospheric textures.

“The idea was to just have something simple, heavy and crushing,” Shelton says. “It’s definitely groovier [than previous album, The Hate Campaign], and lyrically, I’m trying to enunciate as clearly as I can. Before they were more for the studio and I didn’t want to have to pull out studio vocals [for live shows] that just weren’t loud enough or powerful enough, but still belt it without losing my breath.”

Pagan mythology and conspiracy theories are well-worn death-metal topics, but Shelton’s lyrics read more like transcripts of discussions with a shrink. “A lot of times the guys in my band are like, ‘Cool lyrics. Everything OK with you?’” he says with a laugh.

On “Disappoint” and “Malignant,”

where Shelton explores internalizing other people’s problems and frets over whether he is being a people-pleaser. “‘Dead Nerves’ ties in with ‘Perfect Enemy’ where I start to basically lash out at people because of my anxieties.”

Night Terrors’ final track, “Burnout,” features guest vocals from Trevor Strnad of Black Dahlia Murder.

Everyone in the band is a fan of Strnad’s project, but on the whole they don’t limit themselves to metal.

“Folk, surfer music, jazz. We’ll listen to everything except country,” Shelton says. Maybe avoiding the trap of only listening to their own genre has helped Traitors carve out a niche within slam.

It’s a niche that not all have embraced with open arms, if Facebook comments are an indicator. One poster writes “You guys should try using the other 3/4 of your guitar.”

Another says, “I think a verse snuck in there.” The heavy metal-oriented blog, MetalSucks, calls Traitors’ cover of Pantera’s “5 Minutes Alone,” released as a single last summer, “the worst thing ever.” Shelton pays no mind.

“I love it, dude,” he says. “I embrace it.

I don’t like to call the people who troll me ‘haters.’ I see them as people that are just bored and trying to be funny. It’s really easy to make fun of our music but they’re still talking about it.”

The Florida boys are currently trekking through New England in the middle of winter—a decision that is testing their abilities in colder climes, but Shelton says everything is just fine. “There aren’t any good tour packages right now so we thought it was the perfect time to do this.” They will cop to hating the weather though.

“It’s cold, but I have an excuse for not working out.” The main concern now is taking care of the vocal chords. “The sets have been kicking my ass. I just drink a ton of water.”

Traitors is a safe outlet for Shelton’s demons, but by exorcising them he hopes to help others. “I’ve got people who tell me that I’ve saved them and that means so much to hear something like that. I want to inspire people. I want to have all these crazy, weird-ass ranges but it’s all got a point to it.”

difference in tactics: making it attractive for him to stick around, as opposed to leaving a note on his pillow, “Put a ring on it!”—along with the severed, bleeding head of My Little Pony.

This isn’t to say you should keep your mouth shut about what you want. But consider the difference in controllingness in making a statement versus giving an ultimatum. A statement tells him what you have to do: “I feel bad that you don’t seem to want to marry me, and I can’t continue in this much longer.” An ultimatum, on the other hand, tells him what he has to do: “Marry me or nothing, bucko!”

Also, consider that with “marry me or nothing,” you’re very distinctly putting “nothing” on the table. And maybe at a certain point, this is a trade-off you’re willing to make. But, again, stating it in those terms is probably a bad idea.

(Their saying “I’m sorry you’re hurt” is just a sneaky way out, not an expression of care and concern.)

Consider whether the “I’m perfect; you’re oversensitive” model will work for you long term. If not, tell him what you need and see whether he can or will give it to you. If you don’t see a change, the best way to teach him may be by example: “I’m sorry, but the number you have called has been disconnected.”

I can’t blame you for seeking a second opinion on this one, RR. A quick Google search for “digestive enzymes” yields reams of websites with names like Life Force and Soul Healing, all vigorously encouraging the reader to ingest extra helpings of these enzymes—whether they are found naturally, in fruits and vegetables, or synthetically, via the growing supplement market. Keep clicking and pretty soon you’re reading about vaccinations, autism, colloidal silver, precious bodily fluids, etc.

In such a context, trend pieces about celebrities who’ve bought into enzymes start to look authoritative, but legit medical literature is sparse at best. This is because, as far as I can gather, the alleged science in play here is so crackpot that doctors and dietitians have been disinclined to waste time refuting it.

That’s not to say there isn’t a good question here concerning the value of raw foods. In this regard we have plenty of research to fall back on, not to mention 200,000 years of lived experience, the cooking of food being a reasonably significant development in the evolution of the human species. Is it better to eat your vegetables raw or cooked? Depends on both the vegetable and the cooking method. As to the former: • You’ll get more vitamin C out of a raw tomato, but cooking increases your intake of the far rarer antioxidant lycopene, released as heat breaks down cell walls.

Indeed, according to a 2008 study in the British Journal of Nutrition, subjects on a raw-food diet had lower than average levels of lycopene in their blood.

• Cooking carrots increases the amount of beta-carotene, an antioxidant and an important source of vitamin A. Antioxidants in general have been shown to be more available to human eaters when the food they’re in is cooked; see also zucchini and broccoli.

• This stuff is tricky, though. Cooking broccoli at high heat, for example, damages an enzyme that releases a compound called sulforaphane, a potential anticarcinogen, but leaving it undercooked allows a rogue protein to render the sulforaphane inactive.

• Cooking food also, yes, breaks down

its cellulose—that is, dietary fiber— making it easier to both chew and digest.

And, as I say, how you cook it matters too. You won’t be shocked to hear that a broad consensus abjures frying, which introduces into the equation free radicals—cell-damaging agents linked to a number of diseases, including cancer, when their levels in the body grow disproportionate; it’s antioxidants that keep them in check. Beyond that, research has complicated the commonly held belief that steaming vegetables is better than boiling them. Again: it depends on the veggie. A 2008 paper in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry reported that carrots, for instance, retain slightly more carotenoids when boiled than they do steamed. In some cases you might best ditch the old ways altogether: in a 2007 study, microwave cooking led to greater retention of vitamin C in broccoli than either steaming or boiling did.

As for the overall implications of a raw diet on a person’s health, this is where the research to date gets limited, but here’s a few things we know so far: • A 2005 study of 17 raw-food “leaders”—the movement’s evangelists, in other words, mostly also vegan— found that subjects “met or exceeded recommended intakes of vegetables, fruits, and fats and did not meet recommendations for calcium-rich foods, protein-rich foods, and grains.” (Why the grains deficit? Likely because if you’re determined not to cook them, making grains human-digestion-compliant involves a bunch of soaking and sprouting—a significant hassle.)

• Long-term raw, vegetarian diets have been linked to low body weight and BMI, but also to low bone mass.

Finally, a 2008 observational study tracked participants’ sense of their quality of life, anxiety, stress, etc, following a period of weeks spent at a Florida raw-foods institute. Researchers surveyed the attendees at check-in, then again three months later, and wouldn’t you know: responses broadly expressed feelings of a higher quality of life, with lower stress, and little displeasure among those who decided to keep on the diet after their stay. Great news, of course. But I suspect it had something to do with the Florida vacation as well.
